Abstract
BACKGROUND Cochineal red is an organic compound widely used in food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and other fields due to its excellent safety profile. Poisoning caused by eating foods containing cochineal red is rare, and repeated atrial arrhythmia due to cochineal red poisoning is even rarer. CASE SUMMARY An 88-year-old Asian female patient was admitted to hospital due to a disturbance of consciousness. Twelve hours prior to presentation, the patient consumed 12 eggs containing cochineal red over a period of 2 h. At presentation, the patient was in a coma and had a score of 6 on the Glasgow Coma Scale (E2 + VT + M4). The patient's skin and mucous membranes were pink. Electrocardiography (ECG) revealed rapid atrial fibrillation without any signs of ischemia. We prescribed cedilan and fluid replacement for arrhythmia correction. Shortly after admission, the atrial fibrillation corrected to a normal sinus rhythm. On the day 2 of admission, the patient had a sudden atrial flutter accompanied by hemodynamic instability and rapidly declining arterial oxygen saturation between 85% and 90%. The sinus rhythm returned to normal after two electrical cardioversions. Six days after admission, the skin color of the patient returned to normal, and the ECG results were normal. The patient was transferred out of the intensive care unit and eventually discharged after 12 d in hospital. At the 2-mo follow-up visit, the patient was in good health with no recurrence of arrhythmia. CONCLUSION Although cochineal red is a safe, natural food additive, excessive consumption or occupational exposure can induce cardiac arrhythmias.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is necessary for clinicians to be aware of a rare but possible acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) complication caused by multiple wasp stings. Severe ARDS has a high mortality rate but no specific pharmacotherapies have been identified to date. This case study presents the first case of severe ARDS caused by multiple wasp stings, treated successfully with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). It also emphasizes the effectiveness of early ECMO treatment for severe ARDS with persistent hypoxemia.
CASE SUMMARY A 24-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency department after being stung by more than 10 wasps within a 30-min period, with clinical symptoms of multiple rashes, dizziness, chest tightness, nausea, and vomiting. On the 2nd day of admission, the patient developed progressive dyspnea. The patient was diagnosed with ARDS based on clinical manifestations and lung computed tomography (CT) scan. Because of the progressive dyspnea, the intensive care unit physician performed endotracheal intubation and continued to provide ventilator support, but the patient’s respiratory distress worsened, as indicated by the ratio of arterial partial pressure of oxygen to fraction of inspired oxygen. Veno-venous ECMO was initiated for 6 d. On day 7 of admission, ECMO was stopped. On the 11th day of admission, CT scan of the lungs revealed significant reduction of ground-glass opacities and consolidations. After about 2 wk, the patient recovered completely from ARDS and was discharged to home. At the 2-mo follow-up, the patient was in good health with no recurrence of dyspnea nor chest tightness.
CONCLUSION ARDS complication caused by multiple wasp stings may be fatal when mechanical ventilation becomes dangerous due to persistent hypoxemia and despite optimization of ARDS management. We propose that the early implementation of ECMO is a relatively effective treatment, although the evidence is relatively limited.

Abstract
The study aimed to investigate the effects of dietary distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) levels on growth performance, carcass characteristic, serum biochemical indexes, meat physical and chemical quality, nutrient utilization, and standardized ileal digestibility of amino acids (SIDAA) in Pekin ducks aged 11 to 42 d based on the evaluation of its SIDAA. A total of 560 eleven-day-old Cherry Valley ducks were randomly allotted to 5 treatments with 7 replicate pens per treatment and 16 ducks per pen based on the average body weight. Six isonitrogenous and isocaloric experimental diets were formulated on a digestible amino acid basis to produce diets containing 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20% DDGS, respectively. With increasing of dietary DDGS levels, a linear and quadratic reduction (P < 0.05) was observed in the body weight (BW) at d 42, average day gain (ADG) and average day feed intake (ADFI) from d 11 to 42, breast meat yield, the moisture and protein content in the breast meat, and dietary DM and EE utilization. Moreover, a linear and quadratic increase (P < 0.05) was observed in the b* value of the breast meat and serum total cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations. Compared with the control group, the group with 10% inclusion of DDGS exhibited no adverse effect on growth performance, carcass characteristics, serum biochemical indexes, meat physical and chemical quality, nutrient utilization, and the SIDAA of the diets (P > 0.05). These results suggested that 10% of corn DDGS can function as an alternative ingredient to corn and soybean meal, and the optimal levels of DDGS in the diets of ducks aged from 11 to 42 d depends more on its quality.

Abstract
It has been shown that enzyme-treated plant protein can increase performance and promote intestinal health, and save dietary protein. However, our understanding of the effects of enzyme-treated soy protein on performance and intestine function in laying hens, and its rational use, remains limited. The experiment was conducted to study the effect of enzyme-treated soy protein (ETSP) in different nutrient density diets on performance, egg quality, digestive enzyme activity and mRNA expression of amino acid transporters of laying hens. A total of 1 200 Lohmann laying hens (52 wk of age) was randomly divided into a 3 × 2 factorial design that included three nutrient levels: [positive control (PC), metabolisable energy (ME): 2 680 kcal/kg, CP: 15.5%; negative control 1 (NC1), ME: 2 630 kcal/kg, CP: 15%; negative control 2 (NC2), ME:2 580 kcal/kg, CP: 14.5%] and 2 ETSP levels (0 and 0.5%) for 12 weeks. Each treatment had 10 replicates with 20 birds. With the decrease of dietary nutrition density, egg production rate (P = 0.07) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) (P = 0.06) were reduced. Yolk colour was decreased, and yolk index was increased. Supplemented ETSP improved FCR (P = 0.05) and qualified egg rate (P < 0.05). The mass loss rate of egg was decreased after storage for 30 days (P < 0.05). An interaction between nutrient density and ETSP was observed on albumen height and Haugh unit (P < 0.05), and the effects were most noticeable in hens fed 0.5% ETSP in NC2 group. An increase in the activity of trypsin in duodenum (P < 0.05) and the relative expressions of jejunum peptide transporter 1 (PepT1) (P < 0.05) and B0 system neutral amino acid transport carrier (B0AT) mRNA (P < 0.01) was observed during ETSP supplementation. The nutrient density and ETSP supplementation had no significant effect on microbiota in the cecal contents. Overall, the results in this study indicated that the ME decreased 100 kcal/kg and CP decreased 1% in diet of laying hens had a decreasing trend on production performance, no effects on enzyme activity, amino acid transporter mRNA, and gut microbiota, whereas 0.5% ETSP can increase activity of trypsin, PepT1 and B0AT mRNA relative expressions, and improve FCR, qualified egg rate.

Abstract
Two trials were designed to investigate the impacts of egg storage time and maternal dietary vitamin E (VE) supplementation on the growth performance and antioxidant capacity of progeny chicks. In total 512 Ross 308 broiler breeder hens (71-wk-old) were assigned to 2 dietary VE treatments (6 and 100 mg/kg) for 14 wk. Progeny chicks used in trials 1 and 2 were originated from eggs laid at week 10 (stored 0 d) and week 8 (stored 14 d), and week 14 (stored 0 d) and week 12 (stored 14 d), respectively. The 4 groups in trial 1 consisted of 2 levels of maternal VE (6 and 100 mg/kg) and 2 egg storage time (0 and 14 d). The 8 groups in trial 2 consisted of 2 levels of maternal VE (6 and 100 mg/kg), 2 egg storage time (0 and 14 d) and progeny sex (male and female). In trial 1, egg storage decreased the body weight, the liver total superoxide dismutase and total antioxidant capacity of 21-day-old offspring (P < 0.05), and the body weight gain and feed intake from 8 to 21 d and 1 to 21 d (P < 0.05); and increased the serum and liver malonaldehyde (MDA) of 7-day-old offspring and the ratio of feed: gain (F/G) from 1 to 7 d (P < 0.05). Maternal VE (100 vs. 6 mg/kg) decreased the F/G from 1 to 7 d and increased the serum total superoxide dismutase of 21-day-old offspring (P < 0.05). In trial 2, egg storage decreased the body weight of 42-day-old offspring, and the body weight gain and feed intake from 22 to 42 d and 1 to 42 d (P < 0.05); and increased the serum and liver MDA of 21- and 42-day-old offspring (P < 0.05). Maternal VE (100 vs. 6 mg/kg) reduced the serum MDA of 7-day-old offspring (P < 0.05). Interactively, maternal VE (100 vs. 6 mg/kg) reduced the serum MDA of offspring originated from stored eggs (P < 0.05), but not for that of offspring originated from unstored eggs in the two trials. It can be concluded that egg storage (14 vs. 0 d) decreased the growth performance and antioxidant capacity of offspring, while maternal dietary VE (100 vs. 6 mg/kg) supplementation could partly alleviate the reduction of antioxidant capacity (except for growth performance) of offspring induced by egg storage for the early phase post-hatch.

Abstract
In recent years, neohesperidin (NH), as a class of natural flavonoids, has received more and more attention in nutrition research. However, the research on the application of neohesperidin in the laying hens is rarely reported. This study was conducted to determine the effects that different concentrations of dietary NH have on the production performance, egg quality, serum biochemistry and intestinal morphology of laying hens. A total of 240 Lohmann commercial laying hens (66 wk old) were divided into 4 groups, with each group's diet containing a different concentration of NH (0, 100 mg/kg, 200 mg/kg, and 400 mg/kg). Significant associations were found between NH consumption and both higher egg production (P = 0.050) and lower FCR (P = 0.028) after 12 wk NH feed. At 12 wk, eggs produced by hens consuming a 200 mg/kg NH diet had significantly thicker eggshells (P = 0.059) than those produced by hens consuming a 400 mg/kg diet. Dietary NH addition improved albumen height and Haugh unit after 15 d of storage (P < 0.01). However, no significant associations between NH consumption and these factors were identified after 12 wk. Dietary NH addition had no significant effects apparent of gel properties at 12 wk. In addition, NH can effectively reduce the content of total cholesterol (TC) (P = 0.042) and Groups treated with 100 mg/kg NH supplementation showed significantly increased T-AOC concentrations compared to control (P = 0.013) in serum. Hens fed an NH-supplemented diet exhibited a longer villus height and a higher villus/crypt ratio in the ileum (P < 0.01) as compared to controls, as well as lower crypt depth in the duodenum, jejunum and ileum. These results indicate that, as compared to a control diet, an NH-supplemented diet results in higher egg production and quality, as well as improvement in egg gel properties, serum biochemistry and intestinal morphology.

Abstract
This study investigated whether dietary resistant potato starch (RPS) inclusion could ameliorate the negative impact of a low nonphytate phosphorus (nPP) diet on growth performance, feather growth, feather follicles (FF) development, and carcass traits by improving nutrient utilization and cecal microbiome fermentation capacity in Pekin ducks. The experiment was performed with a 2 × 2 randomized block design with 2 levels of RPS (0 or 12%) and 2 levels of nPP (low or normal, low: 0.22% at 1–14 d and 0.18% at 15–35 d of age; normal: 0.40% at 1–14 d and 0.35% at 15–35 d of age) for a total of 4 treatments, each with 8 replicate pens per treatment of 12 birds per pen. As regards growth performance and carcass traits, RPS inclusion markedly increased (P < 0.05) BW of 14 and 35 d, BWG and FI of 1–14 d, 15–35 d, and 1–35 d as well as abdominal fat and breast meat percentage of 35 d in ducks fed low nPP diets; moreover, RSP inclusion significantly reduced (P < 0.05) mortality in ducks fed low nPP diets. As regards feather growth and follicles development of 35 d, RPS inclusion significantly increased (P < 0.05) the fourth primary feather length, absolute feather weight, and the density of primary FF in the back skin in ducks fed low nPP diets. In regard to nutrition utilization, RPS supplementation significantly increased (P < 0.05) the availability of DM, CP, and energy, as well as dietary AME at 35 d of age in ducks fed low nPP diets. However, RPS supplementation had no effect (P > 0.05) on the concentration of cecal short-chain fatty acids and the activities of cecal phytase and cellulase in ducks fed low nPP diets. These results indicate that RPS can improve nutrient availability to ameliorate the negative effects on performance and feather development caused by a low nPP diet in Pekin ducks.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of low-protein diets with low digestibility of feed ingredients on intestinal damage and to explore whether the protease supplementation can alleviate the damage in Pekin ducks. A total of 576 Pekin ducklings (6 replicate pens, 16 ducks/pen) were randomly assigned to 6 dietary treatments (3 × 2 factorial arrangement) in a randomized complete block design. Factors were CP levels (13.5%, 15.5%, and 17.5%) and protease (0 or 20,000U/kg). Compared with the diets containing 17.5% CP, low-protein diets (13.5% CP) showed suppressed (P < 0.05) growth performance and feed intake (FI); reduced (P < 0.05) serum-free arginine, isoleucine, leucine, methionine, phenylalanine, valine, and proline as well as the cecal acetate and propionate concentration; increased (P < 0.05) plasma and ileal mucosal tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) concentration; and downregulated (P < 0.05) mRNA expression of TNF-α, nuclear transcription factor-κb, interferon gamma, and Occludin in ileal mucosa. Irrespective of the dietary CP levels, protease supplementation significantly increased (P < 0.05) the serum-free glutamic acid concentration while decreasing (P < 0.05) the plasma endotoxin, IL-6, and the cecal isovalerate concentration. A significant interactive effect was observed between low-protein diets and protease supplementation (P < 0.05) on serum-free arginine concentration, the ratio of ileal villus height to crypt depth, and the IL-6 concentration in ileal mucosa. These results indicated that low-protein diets could damage intestinal integrity to induce systemic inflammation response and at last to suppress growth performance. Protease supplementation could partly attenuate the negative effects on gut health caused by low-protein diets in Pekin ducks.

Abstract
A total of 560 one-day-old Pekin ducks were randomly allocated to 7 treatments with 8 replicate cages of 10 ducks per cage. The treatments included a corn-rice bran-soybean meal-based diet with recommended nonphytate phosphorus (NPP) (0.40% for 1-14 D/0.35% for 15-35 D, positive control; PC), NPP-deficient diet (0.22% for 1-14 D/0.18% for 15-35 D, negative control; NC), and NC diets supplemented with different levels of phytase (500, 2,500, 5,000, 7,500, 10,000 FTU/kg). Compared with the PC diet, feeding the NC diet significantly decreased (P < 0.05) the bird growth performance, serum total protein, and albumin concentration as well as tibia bone mineralization and strength and increased (P < 0.05) serum calcium (Ca), urea content, and alkaline phosphatase activity throughout the experimental period. Phytase supplementation to NC diets at 5,000 to 10,000 FTU/kg restored (P < 0.05) growth performance, serum biochemical parameters, and tibia traits when compared with the levels of the PC. Moreover, the addition of phytase linearly increased (P < 0.05) dietary protein, Ca, and phosphorus (P) utilization as well as nitrogen output, and excreta iron, copper, manganese, and zinc concentration quadratically increased (P < 0.05) as well as P output. In conclusion, phytase at ≥5,000 FTU/kg was effective in ameliorating the negative effects of NC diets and reducing trace mineral supplementation in diet of Pekin ducks.

Abstract
Foot pad dermatitis (FPD) is a serious problem of the modern poultry industry, negatively affecting birds' welfare and health status, walking and feeding activity, growth performance, carcass quality, and economic performance of meat production. The gut microbiome in poultry with FPD has not been previously investigated. Therefore, we compared the cecal microbiomes of 8 breeding ducks with FPD to 8 control ducks (breeders with apparently healthy feet) by pyrosequencing the bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene. The results showed a significant β-diversity (P < 0.05) of cecal microbiota presented between healthy and FPD-affected breeder ducks. The plasma endotoxins, interleukin 1β (IL-1β), IL-17, IL-6, IL-10, and tumor necrosis factor-α concentration, and the abundance of class Clostridia in FPD-affected ducks was markedly higher (P < 0.05), however, the abundance of genus Prevotella, Lactobacillus, Lachnospiraceae UCG-008, and the Firmicutes to Bacteroidetes ratio in FPD-affected ducks was significantly lower (P < 0.05) when compared to healthy ducks. These findings suggest when duck breeders are affected with FPD, ducks show an increased inflammatory response and a difference of structure and composition of the cecal microbiome.

This study aimed to investigate to the effects of dietary CP levels and protease supplementation on growth performance, carcass traits, meat quality, nutrients utilization, and standardized ileal digestibility of amino acid in Pekin ducks fed a complex diet. A total of 960 14-day-old male ducks were weighed and randomly allotted to a 2 × 5 factorial arrangement of 10 treatments with 6 replicate pens per treatment and 16 ducks per pen fed to 49 D of age. Experimental factors included five dietary CP levels ranging from 13.5 to 17.5% and with or without protease (200 mg/kg) supplementation. Between day 28 to 34, the digestible and metabolizable trials were performed. Significant CP × protease interactions (P < 0.05) on breast meat yield, DM, energy and nitrogen utilization, as well as standardized ileal digestibility values of 7 amino acids were observed. Regardless of protease supplementation, ducks fed 13.5, 14.5, and 15.5% CP had a poorer (P < 0.05) growth performance and breast meat yield than ducks fed with 16.5 and 17.5% CP. Ducks fed 13.5% CP had a positive effect (P < 0.05) on meat quality, dietary DM, energy and nitrogen utilization as well as standardized ileal digestibility of amino acids. Protease supplementation increased (P < 0.05) DM and phosphorus retention and decreased (P < 0.05) shear force of breast meat, regardless of CP level; when CP = 14.5%, protease significantly increased (P < 0.05) breast muscle yield. The optimal CP requirement without or with protease supplementation for BWG and FI were 17.02 or 16.53% and 16.64 or 16.75%, respectively, based on linear broken-line regression.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that a high level of a vitamin premix would prevent the deleterious effects of rapeseed meal (RSM) when added to the diet of Pekin meat ducks. A total of 674 fifteen-day-old ducks were randomly allocated to 6 treatments with 7 cages of 16 ducks each. Three diets were formulated that contained 5, 10, or 20% RSM to compensate for reducing levels of soybean meal. Each RSM level diet was then supplemented with either a low level (low) or a high level (high) of a vitamin premix providing a total of 6 experimental diets. Ducks were fed one of the 6 experimental diets (N = 7 pens per diet) from days 15 to 35 at which time they were euthanized. Ducks were analyzed for antioxidant activity, liver biochemistry, thyroid hormone levels, and liver and thyroid histopathology. Addition of the high vitamin premixes to the 5 or 10% RSM diets improved BW (P < 0.05), BW gain (BWG; P < 0.05), and feed to gain ratio (F/G; P < 0.05) compared to the low vitamin premix; however, neither vitamin premix level had effects on production variables of ducks fed the 20% RSM diet. The high vitamin premix level also improved antioxidant capacity as evidenced by increased (P < 0.05) serum and liver superoxide dismutase activities over that of the low vitamin premix diets. Furthermore, the high level of vitamin premix prevented liver and thyroid pathologies in diets that contain RSM compared to diets with the low vitamin premix. These results suggested that high vitamin premix could prevent the negative effects of a 5 or 10% RSM diet in ducks by improving antioxidative capacities and alleviating liver and thyroid damage.

Abstract
Lonicera confusa (LC) and Astragali Radix (AR) extracts have been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in human. To determine whether LC or/and AR extracts had similar functions to improve the egg production and egg quality, 1,440 (52-wk-old) Lohmann pink-shell hens were randomly distributed into 4 treatments with nine replicates of 40 hens. The hens were fed a basal diet (CON) or the basal diet supplemented with 0.1% LC extracts, 0.1% AR extracts, or 0.1% LC extracts plus 0.1% AR extracts (LC-AR) for 12 wk. The eggs were collected on week 6 and 12 for analysis, and the plasma and ovaries were collected at end of trial. Dietary treatment did not influence (P < 0.05) egg production, egg weight, and feed conversion ratio. However, LC-AR addition increased (P < 0.02) yolk color and sensory quality of hard-boiled eggs compared to other groups. The LC-AR supplementation increased (P = 0.02), and LC addition tended to increase (P = 0.08) Haugh unit of eggs on week 12 compared to CON. The LC-AR supplementation decreased (P < 0.001), and LC or AR individual addition tended to decrease (P < 0.10) plasma malondialdehyde concentration compared to CON. Conversely, LC supplementation increased (P = 0.02) total superoxide dismutase activity, and LC or/and AR supplementation increased the activities of manganese-containing superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) (P < 0.08) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) (P < 0.01) in plasma, and the mRNA abundance of MnSOD, GSH-Px1, and catalase in ovaries (P < 0.05) compared to CON. The LC or/and AR supplementation decreased the concentrations of interleukin (IL)-6 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in plasma (P < 0.05), and the mRNA abundance of IL-6 and TNF-α in ovaries (P < 0.04) compared to CON. These results suggested dietary inclusion of LC or/and AR improved the albumen quality, and a blend of LC and AR improved yolk color, which were associated with the enhancement of antioxidant capacity and the suppression of systemic inflammation in hens.

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine whether protein solubility (PS) of rapeseed meals (RSM) can affect standardized ileal amino acid digestibility (SIDAA) in meat ducks. A total of 1,168, 14-days-old ducks were randomly allotted to 23 treatments (6 cages per diet, 8 ducks per cage) and 1 nitrogen-free diet treatment (8 cages, 8 ducks per cage) based on body weight. The 23 experimental diets consisted of a corn–soybean meal basal diet, and 22 diets containing 15% RSM: 85% basal diet. Titanium dioxide (0.5%) was included in all diets as an indigestible marker. On day 18, all ducks were euthanized by carbon dioxide asphyxiation and digesta samples from the ileum. The contents of PS, ether extract (EE), glucosinolate, isothiocyanate, and oxazolidine were significantly different (P < 0.05) in the 22 RSM, with the CV being 52.62, 49.23, 86.84, 90.19, and 81.98%, respectively. The content of lysine (Lys) and methionine in the 22 RSM samples ranged from 1.03 to 2.71% (CV 24.19%) and from 0.33 to 0.65% (CV 15.17%), respectively. The SIDAA, except for leucine (Leu) and tyrosine, of the 22 RSM samples varied significantly (P < 0.05). A positive correlation was observed (P < 0.05) between PS and standardized ileal digestibility (SID) of Lys, isoleucine, valine, phenylalanine, histidine, serine, cysteine, and tyrosine. The R2 value of multiple linear regression equations for predicting the SID of amino acids (AA) was best for Lys (R2 = 0.958 using dry matter, crude protein, EE, crude fiber, acid detergent fiber, and PS) and least significant for Leu (R2 = 0.348 using crude fiber and ash) with intermediate values for other AA (R2 = 0.359–0.837, P < 0.05). These results suggest that PS varying from 15.06 to 98.08%, also varied considerably in the proximate nutrient content, AA composition, and antinutritional factor content, which was reflected in considerable differences in the duck's SID of AA in RSM. Therefore, PS value can partly reflect the quality of RSM.

Abstract
As the understanding of the pathways involved in such effect are quite limited, we investigated the gene pathways that modulate lipid metabolism in layers and the fatty acid profiles of the yolk of layers that were challenged with dietary vanadium (V) and supplemented with epigallo-catechin-3-gallate (EGCG). For this purpose, a total of 120 hens were divided into four groups which were fed the following experimental diets for a period of 8 weeks: control (basal diet), V10 (control + 10 mg/kg V), EGCG130 (V10 + 130 mg/kg EGCG), and EGCG217 (V10 + 217 mg/kg EGCG). Blood total cholesterol, triglyceride, glucose, and very low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol concentration were lower in V10, EGCG130, and EGCG217 groups compared to the control group, while total cholesterol and triglyceride content in blood were lower in the EGCG217 group than in V10 group (P < 0.05). Hens consumed V10 diet had the highest triglyceride content in liver among treatments, whereas EGCG130 and EGCG217 groups had lower values when compared to those observed in the control group (P < 0.01). Dietary inclusion of V increased yolk polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) and total unsaturated fatty acid (UFA) content compared to the control group (P < 0.05), whereas the addition of either 130 or 217 mg/kg EGCG in V containing diet resulted in similar yolk PUFA and UFA contents with those observed in the control group. Treatment with V alone upregulated the expression of hepatic fatty acid synthase (FAS) and sterol-regulator element-binding protein 1 (SREBP1), while EGCG downregulated FAS and SREBP1 expressions in contrast to V10 treatments (P < 0.01). Liver gene expression peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) was lower in the V10 than in the control group while EGCG inclusion groups upregulated their expression (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the data gathered in this study indicate that dietary V and EGCG alter the layers' lipid metabolism and fat deposition pattern in egg yolk, which might be associated with their modulatory effect on lipogenesis-related gene (FAS, SREBP1, and PPARγ) expression.

Abstract
This study was to determine the effects of rapeseed oil on production performance, egg quality, and serum parameters in laying hens. A total of 1,080 hens (33-wk-old) were randomly divided into a 1 plus 4 × 2 factorial design including four different rapeseed oil sources [high erucic acid of Mianyang city (MH); high erucic acid of Deyang city (DH); low erucic acid of Mianyang (ML); low erucic acid of Deyang (DL)] at two levels (2% and 4%) for 12 wk. The egg production and egg weight were decreased (P < 0.05) during 9 to 12 wk and 1 to 12 wk, while the average daily feed intake (ADFI) and feed conversion ratio were decreased (P < 0.01) in all phases compared to the control group. Adding ML as oil source had higher (P < 0.05) egg weight compared to DH in all periods in spite of levels. Meanwhile, layers fed 4% rapeseed oil decreased (P < 0.01) egg production compared with 2% in all phases except 1 to 4 wk. Regardless of rapeseed oil sources, hens fed 4% oil decreased (P < 0.05) egg weight in contrast to 2% during the whole experiment except 5 to 8 wk. The ADFI was lower (P < 0.01) in 4% oil inclusion groups compared with 2% during overall phase. Rapeseed oil decreased the yolk color (P < 0.01) and yolk ratio (P = 0.02) and increased (P < 0.01) the albumen height and Haugh unit at 12 wk. Dietary rapeseed oil supplementation resulted in a decreased total triglyceride (TG; P < 0.01) and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P = 0.02). Regardless of rapeseed oil levels, layers fed MH had higher TG (P < 0.01), TC (P < 0.05), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (P < 0.05), alanine transaminase (P < 0.01) than those fed other sources. Taken together, the addition of rapeseed oil decreased laying performance, reduced TC and TG in the serum, and increased Haugh unit, with low erucic acid or 2% group showed more pronounced results among all treatments.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary energy concentration on growth performance, serum biochemical indices, and the mRNA expression of inflammatory cytokines in the liver of meat ducks challenged with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). A total of 600 1-d-old Cherry Valley meat ducks were randomly assigned to 10 treatments with six replicate cages of 10 birds/pen. A 5 × 2 factorial arrangement in a complete randomized design experiment was used to study the effect of five concentrations of dietary metabolizable energy (ME, 2,800, 2,900, 3,000, 3,100, and 3,200 kcal/kg) with or without a challenge with LPS in meat ducks. All experimental ducks were intraperitoneally injected with either 0.5 mg/kg body weight (BW) LPS or an equivalent amount of sterile saline at 15, 17, and 19 d of age. The results showed that LPS challenge significantly decreased (P < 0.05) BW (d 21), body weight gain (d 15-21) and average daily feed intake (ADFI; d 15-21), and markedly increased (P < 0.05) relative spleen weight, serum total protein concentration, and the mRNA expression of interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin 10, transforming growth factor β (TGF-β), and Avian Beta Defensin 10 (AVBD-10) in the liver of meat ducks. Ducks fed 3,200 kcal/kg ME diet had the lowest (P < 0.05) ADFI than those fed with the other diets. Additionally, there were significantly LPS by diet interactions on IL-6, interferon-γ, TGF-β, AVBD-10, and inducible nitric oxide synthase mRNA expression (P < 0.05), wherein a more pronounced liver inflammatory response was observed in birds fed high-energy diets (3,100 and 3,200 kcal/kg ME) than birds fed low-energy diet (2,800 and 2,900 kcal/kg ME). The results indicated that 3,100 and 3,200 kcal/kg ME of diets increased hepatic inflammatory markers induced by LPS challenge in ducks but did not influence performance responsiveness during this challenge.

Abstract
For human urine beryllium (Be), each sample (500 microl) was diluted (1+1) with Nash reagent (containing 0.2% (v/v) acetylacetone and 2.0 M ammonium acetate buffer at pH 6.0) and then a 20-microl volume of Triton X-100 (0.4%, v/v) aqueous solution was added. An aliquot (10 microl) of the diluted urine mixture was introduced into a graphite cuvette and was atomized according to a temperature program. The method detection limit (MDL, 3sigma) for Be was 0.37 microg/l in the undiluted urine sample and the calibration graph was linear up to 65.0 microg/l. Calibration graphs were prepared by the standard addition method. Accuracies of 98.6-102% were obtained when testing standard reference material (SRM 2670) freeze dried human urine samples. Precision (relative standard deviation, RSD) for urine Be was < or = 2.3% (withinrun, n = 5) and was < or = 3.0% (between-run, n = 3). For human urine and serum selenium (Se), samples (100 microl) were diluted with HNO3 (0.2%, v/v) to make a (1+1) dilution for urine analysis or a (1+4) dilution for serum analysis. An additional aliquot (10 microl) of Triton X-100 (0.1%, v/v) was added to each 200 microl of (1+1) diluted urine (or 20 microl of the Triton X-100 was added to each 500 microl of (1+4) diluted serum) sample. After the diluted sample mixture (10 microl) was introduced into a graphite cuvette, the corresponding chemical modifier (10 microl, containing Ni2+ + Pd + NH4NO3 in HNO3 (0.2%, v/v)) was added to it and the mixture was atomized. The MDL (3sigma) for Se in urine and in serum was 4.4 and 21.4 microg/l in undiluted sample, respectively, and the calibration graphs were linear up to 150 and 400 microg/l. Accuracies of urine Se were 98.9 - 99.4% by testing SRM 2670 (NIST) urine standards with RSD (between-run, n = 3) within 2.9%; and that of serum Se was 97.2% when testing a certified second-generation human serum (No. 29, #664) with RSD (between-run, n = 3) of 1.4%. The proposed method can be applied easily, directly, and accurately to the measurement of Be and Se in real samples (including six urine Se and four serum Se from patients of Blackfoot Disease in Taiwan).

Abstract
We describe four male members of a Chinese family, including the father and three sons, with hereditary cyclic neutropenia. These patients had all developed cyclic neutropenia in childhood with a cycle of around 21 d. Recurrent mucosa and skin infections with fever had occurred frequently, but gradually decreased in severity on reaching adulthood. Monocytosis was found during the neutrophil nadirs in all four patients. Mildly increased serum immunoglobulin (Ig)A and IgG levels, low levels of serum stem cell factor, as well as decreased sperm count and motility were demonstrated in the two elder sons. Chromosomal analysis showed a pericentric inversion of Y chromosome [46,X, inv(Y)(p11.2;q11.23)] in all of the men. These findings may suggest an association between cyclic neutropenia with oligospermia and inv(Y)(p11.2;q11.23) in this particular family.

Abstract
The transcriptional regulation of the Fas ligand (FasL) gene in Jurkat cells was investigated. We demonstrated that an Sp1 binding site, located between -280 and -275 bp relative to the translational start site (+1) of the FasL gene, was important for the transcription of the FasL gene by deletion and mutation analysis in Jurkat cells after phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) and ionomycin treatment. Nuclear extract of Jurkat cells formed complexes with the oligonucleotides bearing the Sp1 site within -280 to -275 of the FasL promoter. Apart from the constitutive complexes, a new complex was observed after PMA and ionomycin stimulation. Plasmid containing the Sp1 site sequence with site-directed mutation reduced the FasL promoter activity in driving the expression of reporter luciferase gene expression in transfected Jurkat cells after PMA and ionomycin stimulation. The binding of activated Jurkat cell nuclear extract to the mutated Sp1 binding site of the FasL promoter was ablated. In addition, the oligomer containing the Sp1 site of the FasL promoter could compete with oligomer with conserved Sp1 binding sequence in nuclear protein binding of activated Jurkat cells. The data presented in this study suggest that the transactivation of the FasL promoter via the Sp1 binding sequence (-280 to -275) involves the PMA- and ionomycin-induced expression of the FasL gene.

Abstract
gammaS-Crystallin from catfish eye lenses, formerly designated betas-crystallin in mammalian lenses, is structurally characterized in this study by cDNA cloning and sequencing. To facilitate sequence characterization of gammaS-crystallin with structural properties lying between beta- and gamma-crystallins, a cDNA mixture was constructed from the poly(A)+ mRNA isolated from catfish eye lenses, and amplification by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was carried out to obtain nucleotide segments encoding multiple gammaS-crystallin isoforms. Sequencing several positive clones revealed that at least two distinct isoforms exist in the gammaS-crystallin class of this teleostean fish, similar to the authentic gamma-crystallin family characterized previously in species of the piscine class. Comparison of protein sequences encoded by two representative catfish gammaS1 and gammaS2 cDNAs with the published sequences of beta-, gamma-, and gammaS-crystallins from shark, carp, bullfrog, bovine, and human lenses indicates that there is about 20-50% sequence homology between catfish gammaS-crystallins and various members of the related beta/gamma-crystallin superfamily from different evolutionary classes, with a higher sequence similarity being found between catfish gammaS- and mammalian gamma-crystallins than between catfish gammaS- and bovine or carp gammaS-crystallins. Phylogenetic trees constructed on the basis of the nucleotide and protein sequence divergence among various beta-, gamma-, and gammaS-crystallins corroborate the closer relatedness of catfish gammaS- to authentic gamma-crystallin than to bovine and carp gammaS-crystallins. The results suggest that evolution of catfish gammaS-crystallins follows a different path from that of bovine and carp gammaS-crystallins and may represent a more ancient offshoot from the ancestral gamma/gammaS coding gene than carp and bovine gammaS-crystallins.

Abstract
An isocratic high-performance liquid chromatographic method with ultraviolet detection was utilized for the investigation of the pharmacokinetics of naringenin and its glucuronide conjugate in rat plasma and brain tissue. Plasma and brain tissue were deproteinized by acetonitrile, then centrifuged for sample clean-up. The drugs were separated by a reversed-phase C18 column with a mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile-orthophosphoric acid solution (pH 2.5-2.8) (36:64, v/v). The detection limits of naringenin in rat plasma and brain tissue were 50 ng/ml and 0.4 microg/g, respectively. The glucuronide conjugate of naringenin was evaluated by the deconjugated enzyme beta-glucuronidase. The naringenin conjugation ratios in rat plasma and brain tissue were 0.86 and 0.22, respectively, 10 min after naringenin (20 mg/kg, i.v.) administration. The mean naringenin conjugation ratio in plasma was approximately four fold that in brain tissue.

Abstract
mcl-1, a bcl-2 family member, was originally identified as an early gene induced during differentiation of ML-1 myeloid leukemia cells. In the present study, we demonstrate that Mcl-1 is tightly regulated by the granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) signaling pathway. Upon deprivation of survival factor from TF-1 myeloid progenitor cells, Mcl-1 levels quickly dropped prior to visible detection of apoptosis of these cells. Upon restimulation of these deprived cells with GM-CSF, the mcl-1 mRNA was immediately induced and its protein product was accordingly resynthesized. Analysis with Ba/F3 cells expressing various truncation mutants of the GM-CSF receptor revealed that the membrane distal region between amino acids 573 and 755 of the receptor beta chain was required for mcl-1 induction. Transient-transfection assays with luciferase reporter genes driven by various regions of the mcl-1 promoter demonstrated that the upstream sequence between -197 and -69 is responsible for cytokine activation of the mcl-1 gene. Overexpression of mcl-1 delayed but did not completely prevent apoptosis of cells triggered by cytokine withdrawal. Its down regulation by antisense constructs overcame, at least partially, the survival activity of GM-CSF and induced the apoptosis of TF-1 cells. Taken together, these results suggest that mcl-1 is an immediate-early gene activated by the cytokine receptor signaling pathway and is one component of the GM-CSF viability response.

Abstract
The presence of lipids in postprandial urine was assessed in 116 patients with a history of filariasis and 70 normal individuals using a biochemical autoanalyzer. Urinary triglycerides (TGs) ranging from 10 to 1955 mg/dl were detected in 13 individuals with a history of chyluria, including 3 with TG levels ranging from 233 to 1955 mg/dl and cholesterol levels of 6-35 mg/dl. Three patients who had a filarial history but without chyluria were also found to have urinary TGs (13-15 mg/dl) without detectable cholesterol. Neither TGs nor cholesterol were detected in the urine of normal individuals. Fluctuations in postprandial urine lipid contents were measured by time course determinations of urinary TG and cholesterol in 17 patients with filariasis and a history of chyluria, 16 patients with filariasis and hydrocele and 16 normal individuals. The level of urine lipid excretion was found to increase within 1-4 h postprandially, with urinary TG levels ranging between 7.8 and 1284 mg/h in eight patients and urinary cholesterol levels between 1.2 and 138 mg/h in seven patients with a history of chyluria. To evaluate the origin of the urine lipids in hematochyluria, fish oil containing 360 mg eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 240 mg docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was prescribed to a patient with hematochyluria. The excretion of EPA and DHA in urine was increased postprandially in the patient, similar to the elevation of urinary TG and cholesterol. The profile of fatty acids from urine samples showed it was of dietary origin. Our results suggest that postprandial urine lipids, especially TG, might be used as markers for the clinical evaluation of chyluria.

Abstract
From May to December 1993, a house-by-house survey was conducted on the changes in clinical manifestations of filariasis among 814 pre-control mf carriers in 88 villages of five towns/districts on Kinmen Islands. Four hundred and sixteen (51%) pre-control mf carriers were examined physically with history taking. The rates of disappearance, improvement, no change, aggravation, and new occurrence were 72% (229), 6% (26), 14% (59), 6% (24) and 2% (8), respectively. The rates of disappearance and improvement were higher for the acute than for the chronic manifestations. However, these rates were also high for hydrocele and chyluria. These findings indicate that the acute manifestations disappear or greatly improve after filariasis eradication by a low dose of DEC medicated salt for a period of 6 months. However, the chronic ones remain unchanged or even aggravated to become one of the more important public health problems.

Abstract
In order to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites among labourers from Thailand in Taiwan, the stool samples from 1364 Thai labourers were examined by the formalin-ether concentration method and 18.0% were found to be infected with one or more parasites. The infection rates of hookworm, Opisthorchis viverrini, Strongyloides stercoralis, Enterobius vermicularis, Ascaris lumbricoides, Hymenolepis nana, Capillaria philippinensis, Schistosoma japonicum, Echinostoma sp., Entamoeba coli, Giardia lamblia, and Entamoeba histolytica, were 7.6%, 7.0%, 3.2%, 0.5%, 0.3%, 0.1%, 0.1%, 0.1%, 0.1%, 0.4%, 0.2%, and 0.1% respectively. The prevalence was highest among the 21-25 age group (24.8%). Among the 245 infected persons, 91% were infected with one parasite, 8% with two parasites and 1% with three parasites. The finding that parasitic infections are prevalent among Thai labourers demonstrates the need for control measures in foreign labourers in Taiwan and further studies to determine the susceptibility of O. viverrini to the snail hosts of Clonorchis sinensis.

Abstract
We evaluated 61 patients with two screening tests for alpha-thalassemia traits on the basis of endonuclease gene mapping. Comparing these two methods--the osmotic fragility test of the red cell and modified hemoglobin H inclusion staining for the sensitivity--we found that the latter was much superior to the former with 100% sensitivity in detecting heterozygous alpha-1 thalassemia and it was also specific as a confirmatory test for thalassemia traits. Red cell indices are still the basic screening tool and can be used together with modified Hb H inclusion staining. The osmotic fragility test was not better than the red cell indices and was not confirmatory. Besides the MCV, RBC, and discrimination functions, we found that RBC distribution width-standard deviation (RDW-SD) was consistently low in heterozygous alpha-1 thalassemia but not in heterozygous alpha-2 thalassemia. None of the above tests was shown to be really helpful in screening in the latter situation. We conclude that the modified Hb H inclusion staining is superior to the osmotic fragility test in screening of alpha-1 thalassemia.

Abstract
We examined the iron status of 23 adult patients with hemoglobin H (Hb H) disease. None of them had received multiple blood transfusions or prolonged iron therapy. Studies included serum iron and ferritin concentrations, transferrin saturation, a desferrioxamine test, computed tomography (CT) scan of the liver, and liver biopsy. Iron overload was found in 17 patients (73.9%), especially in males and in patients with splenomegaly (92.9% and 100%, respectively). Four patients with excessive alcohol consumption had clinical manifestations of severe iron overload. Idiopathic hemochromatosis associated HLA antigens, i.e., HLA-A3, -B7, or -B14, were not found in any of the 15 patients tested. These findings indicate that iron overload is common in adult patients with Hb H disease; such patients should abstain from alcohol and be considered for treatment with an iron chelating agent before irreversible organ damage occurs.

Abstract
Two Chinese patients with hemoglobin (Hb) H disease without a history of blood transfusion developed iron overload at the age of 45 and 53 years, respectively. Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system types of these 2 patients were A19, A11, B13, B62 and A2, A24, BW55, respectively, which are not related to the common haplotypes for idiopathic hemochromatosis. Since severe iron loading is a rare clinical manifestation in untransfused patients with Hb H disease, the iron overload in both patients may be due to environmental or underlying genetic factors.

Abstract
Eighty-eight patients with Hemoglobin (Hb) H diagnosed in our hospital in the past decade were reviewed. Among them, 37 were males and 51 were females, and their age ranged from 10 to 77 years. In physical examination, 43.3% of them showed to have jaundice, 47% had splenomegaly, 14% had hepatomegaly and 19.3% had gall stone. Hb electrophoresis revealed the presence of Hb H (1.4-40%), Hb F (23/88, range: 0.5-7.5%) and decreased Hb A2 (mean = 1.23 +/- 1.2%). The study of iron status showed increased serum ferritin concentration (mean = 421.4 +/- 343.7 ug/dl) and transferrin saturation ratio (53.9% +/- 20.5%). Hemosiderosis was found in three out of four patients received liver biopsy. Although most patients did not receive blood transfusion frequently, iron overload was not uncommon in the patients with Hb H disease. Further study would be needed to explore the true relationship between iron overload and Hb H disease.

Abstract
The inheritance of alpha-thalassemia is determined by restriction endonuclease mapping in the members of two Chinese families with history of Hb H disease. One family carries the South East Asia (SEA) deletion in alpha-thalassemia-1 determinant and the nondeletion mutation in alpha-thalassemia-2 determinant. The other family carries the SEA deletion in alpha-thalassemia-1 determinant and the leftward deletion in alpha-thalassemia-2 determinant. Direct analysis of the genetic defects by gene mapping technique is the most reliable method for detecting minor forms of alpha-thalassemia and provides valuable information for genetic conseling in affected families.

Abstract
In a gene mapping study on 217 newborn babies in Taiwan with alpha- and zeta-globin probes, we have observed 4 cases (1.84%) of alpha-thalassemia-2 heterozygotes (zeta zeta-alpha/zeta zeta alpha alpha) without increased levels of hemoglobin (Hb) Bart's in the cord blood. Eleven subjects (5.07%) were found to have the South East Asian alpha-thalassemia-1 haplotype (zeta zeta--SEA/zeta zeta alpha alpha) with increased Hb Bart's levels ranging from 2.2 to 9%. One case, with Hb Bart's level of 14% in the cord blood, was found to have the genotype of zeta zeta--SEA/zeta zeta alpha alpha T (0.46%). Four heterozygotes (1.84%) were found with the triple alpha gene anti-rightward arrangement (zeta zeta alpha alpha alpha 3.7/zeta zeta alpha alpha). Twenty-one heterozygotes (9.68%) were found to have the triple zeta-globin gene arrangement (zeta zeta zeta alpha alpha/zeta zeta alpha alpha). A new triple zeta-globin gene variant with a BamHI polymorphism was also observed in this study.

Abstract
In order to investigate the interzeta-globin gene hypervariable regions (IZHVR) in Chinese, DNA samples from 114 unrelated normal individuals were analyzed using the restriction endonuclease BglII and hybridized with a 32P-labeled zeta-globin probe. Four polymorphic fragments containing IZHVR with different frequencies were found: 11.3 kb, 0.24; 10.8 kb, 0.50; 10.4 kb, 0.05, and 10.0 kb, 0.21. Using these polymorphic fragments as linkage markers, we were able to trace the affected siblings in a three-generation Chinese family with a history of adult polycystic kidney disease.

Abstract
In order to study the prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in the adult population of Taiwan, we screened for the presence of HBV DNA in 205 blood samples from adult (20-59-year-old) volunteers. According to the serological markers of HBV, samples were divided into three groups: group I (173 subjects) was negative for both HBsAg and HBeAg; group II (14 subjects) was positive for both HBsAg and HBeAg; and group III consisted of 18 subjects who were HBsAg-positive but HBeAg-negative. Plasma HBV DNA was not detected in group I, but it was found in 85.7% and 11.8% of samples in group II and group III, respectively. A free-form HBV DNA was found in 14.3% of the leukocyte samples in group II. Furthermore, an integrated form of HBV DNA was detected in the leukocytes of two cases of group I who remained healthy based on clinical data. HBV DNA was also detected in the spermatozoa and liver cells of one of the cases.

Abstract
We have determined the molecular characteristics of alpha-thalassemia in 12 HbH subjects from Taiwan by restriction endonuclease mapping with alpha- and zeta-specific probes. We have found four types of defects in the alpha-thalassemia-2 genetic determinant: -alpha 3.7 type I; -alpha 4.2; alpha CS alpha; and alpha alpha T. All HbH subjects carried the --SEA genotype in the alpha-thalassemia-1 determinant. At least two different subtypes of --SEA genotype were observed in this study.

Abstract
An immunoalkaline phosphatase (IAP) technique was used to determine the class of cytoplasmic immunoglobulin presenting in the malignant plasma cells of patients with multiple myeloma. Using monoclonal antibodies against different human immunoglobulins (Igs) as the primary antibodies, and calf intestinal phosphatase as the enzymatic indicator. The presence of monoclonal immunoglobulin was demonstrated within the cytoplasm of malignant plasma cells. These results correlate well with the electrophoretic patterns of the Igs present in the serum samples of these patients. This IAP technique is suggested as a practical method for evaluating the immunophenotype of multiple myeloma.

Abstract
We have analysed seven polymorphic restriction sites of the human beta-globin gene cluster of six members of a Chinese family with a beta +-thalassemic sibling. The seven polymorphic sites analysed are the HincII site at the 5'-end of the epsilon-globin gene, the HindIII sites in the two gamma-globin genes, two HincII sites within and at the 3'-end of the psi beta 1 pseudogene, the AvaII site in the beta-globin gene and the BamHI site located at the 3' side of the beta-globin gene. The beta thal chromosome has been identified to have a haplotype of +----++ with respect to these seven polymorphic sites. This is also the most predominant haplotype associated with beta +-thalassemia in Mediterranean and Chinese populations (Chen et al., 1984; Orkin et al., 1982). Of the seven sites analysed in this family, four will be useful in prenatal diagnosis of beta-thalassemia in subsequent pregnancies in the family.

Abstract
A new human B-cell lymphoma-derived cell line, designated HBL-2, was established from peripheral blood of a 17-year-old male during terminal leukemic phase. HBL-2 cells were single cell suspensions when cultured in RPMI 1640 with 10% fetal calf serum promoting a doubling time of about 20 hours. Cell marker studies revealed Ia and surface immunoglobulin positive, cytoplasmic immunoglobulin and Epstein-Barr nuclear antigen negative. Chromosome analysis showed a male aneuploid karyotype with 14q+ and other abnormal markers. Under electron microscopy, the cells exhibited clear nucleoli, fine chromatin, and were in a primary differentiated state. The establishment of HBL-2 cell line provides a powerful tool in studying the oncogenesis of B-cell malignancy.
