Abstract
AIM To investigate the application of the T2-weighted (T2)-fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) mismatch sign and machine learning-based multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) radiomics in predicting 1p/19q non-co-deletion of lower-grade gliomas (LGGs). MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and forty-six patients, who had pathologically confirmed isocitrate dehydrogenase (IDH) mutant LGGs were assigned randomly to the training cohort (n=102) and the testing cohort (n=44) at a ratio of 7:3. The T2-FLAIR mismatch sign and conventional MRI features were evaluated. Radiomics features extracted from T1-weighted imaging (T1WI), T2-weighted imaging (T2WI), FLAIR, apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), and contrast-enhanced T1WI images (CE-T1WI). The models that displayed the best performance of each sequence were selected, and their predicted values as well as the T2-FLAIR mismatch sign data were collected to establish a final stacking model. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analyses and area under the curve (AUC) values were applied to evaluate and compare the performance of the models. RESULTS The T2-FLAIR mismatch sign was more common in the IDH mutant 1p/19q non-co-deleted group (p<0.05) and the area under the curve (AUC) value was 0.692 with sensitivity 0.397, specificity 0.987, and accuracy 0.712, respectively. The stacking model showed a favourable performance with an AUC of 0.925 and accuracy of 0.882 in the training cohort and an AUC of 0.886 and accuracy of 0.864 in the testing cohort. CONCLUSION The stacking model based on multiparametric MRI can serve as a supplementary tool for pathological diagnosis, offering valuable guidance for clinical practice.

[Identification of key genes in Wilms tumor based on high-throughput RNA sequencing and their impacts on prognosis and immune responses]. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify the key genes differentially expressed in Wilms tumor and analyze their potential impacts on prognosis and immune responses of the patients. METHODS High-throughput RNA sequencing was used to identify the differentially expressed mRNAs in clinical samples of Wilms tumor and paired normal tissues, and their biological functions were analyzed using GO, KEGG and GSEA enrichment analyses. The hub genes were identified using STRING database, based on which a prognostic model was constructed using LASSO regression. The mutations of the key hub genes were analyzed and their impacts on immunotherapy efficacy was predicted using the cBioPortal platform. RT-qPCR was used to verify the differential expressions of the key hub genes in Wilms tumor. RESULTS Of the 1612 differentially expressed genes identified in Wilms tumor, 1030 were up-regulated and 582 were down-regulated, involving mainly cell cycle processes and immune responses. Ten hub genes were identified, among which 4 genes (TP53, MED1, CCNB1 and EGF) were closely related to the survival of children with Wilms tumor. A 3-gene prognostic signature was constructed through LASSO regression analysis, and the patients stratified into with high- and low-risk groups based on this signature had significantly different survival outcomes (HR=1.814, log-rank P=0.002). The AUCs of the 3-, 5- and 7-year survival ROC curves of this model were all greater than 0.7. The overall mutations in the key hub genes or the individual mutations in TP53/CCNB1 were strongly correlated with a lower survival rates, and a high TP53 expression was correlated with a poor immunotherapy efficacy. RT-qPCR confirmed that the key hub genes had significant differential expressions in Wilms tumor tissues and cells. CONCLUSION TP53 gene plays an important role in the Wilms tumor and may potentially serve as a new immunotherapeutic biomarker as well as a therapeutic target.

Abstract
Hibernation is a widespread metabolic strategy among mammals for surviving periods of food scarcity. During hibernation, animals naturally alternate between metabolically depressed torpor bouts and energetically expensive arousals without ill effects. As a result, hibernators are promising models for investigating mechanisms that buffer against cellular stress, including telomere protection and restoration. In non-hibernators, telomeres, the protective structural ends of chromosomes, shorten with age and metabolic stress. In temperate hibernators, however, telomere shortening and elongation can occur in response to changing environmental conditions and associated metabolic state. We investigate telomere dynamics in a tropical hibernating primate, the fat-tailed dwarf lemur (Cheirogaleus medius). In captivity, these lemurs can hibernate when maintained under cold temperatures (11-15 °C) with limited food provisioning. We study telomere dynamics in eight fat-tailed dwarf lemurs at the Duke Lemur Center, USA, from samples collected before, during, and after the hibernation season and assayed via qPCR. Contrary to our predictions, we found that telomeres were maintained or even lengthened during hibernation, but shortened immediately thereafter. During hibernation, telomere lengthening was negatively correlated with time in euthermia. Although preliminary in scope, our findings suggest that there may be a preemptive, compensatory mechanism to maintain telomere integrity in dwarf lemurs during hibernation. Nevertheless, telomere shortening immediately afterward may broadly result in similar outcomes across seasons. Future studies could profitably investigate the mechanisms that offset telomere shortening within and outside of the hibernation season and whether those mechanisms are modulated by energy surplus or crises.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether 'fast,' unilateral, brachial plexus, 3D magnetic resonance neurography (MRN) acquisitions with deep learning reconstruction (DLR) provide similar image quality to longer, 'standard' scans without DLR. MATERIALS AND METHODS An IRB-approved prospective cohort of 30 subjects (13F; mean age = 50.3 ± 17.8y) underwent clinical brachial plexus 3.0 T MRN with 3D oblique-coronal STIR-T2-weighted-FSE. 'Standard' and 'fast' scans (time reduction = 23-48%, mean = 33%) were reconstructed without and with DLR. Evaluation of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and edge sharpness was performed for 4 image stacks: 'standard non-DLR,' 'standard DLR,' 'fast non-DLR,' and 'fast DLR.' Three raters qualitatively evaluated 'standard non-DLR' and 'fast DLR' for i) bulk motion (4-point scale), ii) nerve conspicuity of proximal and distal suprascapular and axillary nerves (5-point scale), and iii) nerve signal intensity, size, architecture, and presence of a mass (binary). ANOVA or Wilcoxon signed rank test compared differences. Gwet's agreement coefficient (AC2) assessed inter-rater agreement. RESULTS Quantitative SNR and edge sharpness were superior for DLR versus non-DLR (SNR by + 4.57 to + 6.56 [p < 0.001] for 'standard' and + 4.26 to + 4.37 [p < 0.001] for 'fast;' sharpness by + 0.23 to + 0.52/pixel for 'standard' [p < 0.018] and + 0.21 to + 0.25/pixel for 'fast' [p < 0.003]) and similar between 'standard non-DLR' and 'fast DLR' (SNR: p = 0.436-1, sharpness: p = 0.067-1). Qualitatively, 'standard non-DLR' and 'fast DLR' had similar motion artifact, as well as nerve conspicuity, signal intensity, size and morphology, with high inter-rater agreement (AC2: 'standard' = 0.70-0.98, 'fast DLR' = 0.69-0.97). CONCLUSION DLR applied to faster, 3D MRN acquisitions provides similar image quality to standard scans. A faster, DL-enabled protocol may replace currently optimized non-DL protocols.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is the preferred approach for selective reduction in complex monochorionic (MC) multiple pregnancies owing to the ease of operation and minimal invasiveness. To optimize the RFA technique and reduce the risk of adverse pregnancy outcome resulting from the heat-sink effect of RFA therapy, we used an innovative RFA method, in which an electrode needle was expanded incrementally and stepwise. This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety profile of this novel multistep incremental expansion RFA method for selective fetal reduction in MC twin and triplet pregnancies. METHODS This was a single-center retrospective cohort study of all MC multiple pregnancies undergoing RFA between March 2016 and October 2022 at our center. The multistep RFA technique involved the use of an expandable needle, which was gradually expanded during the RFA procedure until cessation of umbilical cord blood flow was achieved. The needle used for the single-step RFA method was fully extended from the start of treatment. RESULTS In total, 132 MC multiple pregnancies underwent selective reduction using RFA, including 50 cases undergoing multistep RFA and 82 cases undergoing single-step RFA. The overall survival rates were not significantly different between the multistep and single-step RFA groups (81.1% vs 72.3%; P = 0.234). Similarly, the rates of preterm prelabor rupture of the membranes within 2 weeks after RFA, procedure-related complications, spontaneous preterm delivery and pathological findings on cranial ultrasound, as well as gestational age at delivery and birth weight, did not differ between the two groups. However, there was a trend towards a prolonged procedure-to-delivery interval following multistep RFA compared with single-step RFA (median, 109 vs 99 days; P = 0.377). Moreover, the fetal loss rate within 2 weeks after RFA in the multistep RFA group was significantly lower than that in the single-step RFA group (10.0% vs 24.4%; P = 0.041). The median ablation time was shorter (5.3 vs 7.8 min; P < 0.001) and the median ablation energy was lower (10.2 vs 18.0 kJ; P < 0.001) in multistep compared with single-step RFA. There were no significant differences in neonatal outcomes following multistep vs single-step RFA. CONCLUSIONS Overall survival rates were similar between the two RFA methods. However, the multistep RFA technique was associated with a lower risk of fetal loss within 2 weeks after RFA. The multistep RFA technique required significantly less ablation energy and a shorter ablation time compared with single-step RFA in selective fetal reduction of MC twin and triplet pregnancies. Additionally, there was a trend towards a prolonged procedure-to-delivery interval with the multistep RFA technique. © 2023 The Authors. Abstract
Surgical site infections (SSIs) are a common type of healthcare-associated infection. We performed a literature review to demonstrate the incidence of SSIs in mainland China based on studies since 2010. We included 231 eligible studies with ≥30 postoperative patients, comprising 14 providing overall SSI data regardless of surgical sites and 217 reporting SSIs for a specific site. We found that the overall SSI incidence was 2.91% (median; interquartile range: 1.05%, 4.57%) or 3.18% (pooled; 95% confidence interval: 1.85%, 4.51%) and the SSI incidence varied remarkably according to the surgical site between the lowest (median, 1.00%; pooled, 1.69%) in thyroid surgeries and the highest (median, 14.89%; pooled, 12.54%) in colorectal procedures. We uncovered that Enterobacterales and staphylococci were the most common types of micro-organisms associated with SSIs after various abdominal surgeries and cardiac or neurological procedures, respectively. We identified two, nine, and five studies addressing the impact of SSIs on mortality, the length of stay (LOS) in hospital, and additional healthcare-related economic burden, respectively, all of which demonstrated increased mortality, prolonged LOS, and elevated medical costs associated with SSIs among affected patients. Our findings illustrate that SSIs remain a relatively common, serious threat to patient safety in China, requiring more action. To tackle SSIs, we propose to establish a nationwide network for SSI surveillance using unified criteria with the aid of informatic techniques and to tailor and implement countermeasures based on local data and observation. We highlight that the impact of SSIs in China warrants further study.

Abstract
AIMS SIRT1 deficiency has been associated with diabetes, and a variant of the SIRT1 gene has been found to be involved in human autoimmune diabetes; however, it is unclear whether this genetic variation exists in Han Chinese with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and whether it contributes to development of T1D. Therefore, we aimed to explore the association of the SIRT1 gene single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs10997866 and rs3818292 in a Han Chinese population with T1D. METHODS This study recruited 2653 unrelated Han Chinese individuals, of whom 1289 had T1D and 1364 were healthy controls. Allelic and genotypic distributions of SIRT1 polymorphisms (rs10997866 and rs3818292) were determined by MassARRAY. Basic characteristics, genotype and allele frequencies of selected SNPs were compared between the T1D patients and healthy controls. Further genotype-phenotype association analysis of the SNPs was performed on the T1D patients divided into three groups according to genotype. Statistical analyses included the chi-square test, Mann‒Whitney U test, Kruskal‒Wallis H test and logistic regression. RESULTS The allelic (G vs. A) and genotypic (GA vs. AA) distributions of SIRT1 rs10997866 were significantly different in T1D patients and healthy controls (P = 0.039, P = 0.027), and rs10997866 was associated with T1D susceptibility under dominant, overdominant and additive models (P = 0.026, P = 0.030 and P = 0.027, respectively). Moreover, genotype-phenotype association analysis showed the GG genotype of rs10997866 and the GG genotype of rs3818292 to be associated with higher titers of IA-2A (P = 0.013 and P = 0.038, respectively). CONCLUSION SIRT1 rs10997866 is significantly associated with T1D susceptibility, with the minor allele G conferring a higher risk of T1D. Moreover, SIRT1 gene rs10997866 and rs3818292 correlate with the titer of IA-2A in Han Chinese individuals with T1D.

Abstract
Recurrent drought can induce stress memory in plants to induce tolerance to subsequent stress, such as high temperature or drought. Drought priming (DP) is an effective approach to improve tolerance to various stresses; however, the potential mechanism of DP-induced stress memory has not been fully resoved. We examined DP-regulated subsequent drought tolerance or thermotolerance associated with changes in physiological responses, GABA and NO metabolism, heat shock factor (HSF) and dehydrin (DHN) pathways in perennial creeping bentgrass. Plants can recover after two cycle of DP, and DP-treated plants had significantly higher tolerance to subsequent drought or heat stress, with higher leaf RWC, Chl content, photochemical efficiency, and cell membrane stability. DP significantly alleviated oxidative damage through enhancing total antioxidant capacity in response to subsequent drought or heat stress. Endogenous GABA was significantly increased by DP through activating glutamic acid decarboxylase activity and inhibiting GABA transaminase activity. DP also enhanced accumulation of NO, depending on NOS activity, under subsequent drought or heat stress. Transcript levels of multiple transcription factors, heat shock proteins, and DHNs in the HSF and DHN pathways were up-regulated by DP under drought or heat stress, but there were differences between DP-regulated heat tolerance and drought tolerance in these pathways. The findings indicate that under recurrent moderate drought, DP improves subsequent tolerance to drought or heat stress in relation to GABA-regulated pathways, providing new insight into understanding of the role of stress memory in plant adaptation to complex environmental stresses.

Clinical study of tirofiban compared to low molecular weight heparin in the antithrombotic treatment of progressive pontine infarction. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the efficacy and safety of tirofiban and low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) in the treatment of patients undergoing acute progressive pontine infarction. PATIENTS AND METHODS Patients with acute progressive pontine infarction who were hospitalized in the Neurology Department from June 2021 to June 2023 were included in the study and randomly divided into two groups, namely the experimental group (tirofiban group) and the control group (LMWH group). All patients in both groups were required to receive conventional comprehensive treatment and dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin + clopidogrel at the beginning of admission. The National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score and Barthel Index (BI) were used to evaluate the neurological deficits on the first day of admission, the next day with stroke progression, and at discharge after treatment with tirofiban and LMWH, respectively in the two groups. The modified Rankin Scale was employed to assess prognosis on the 90th day after treatment. Clinical adverse events were followed up for 90 days, comparing the clinical efficacy and safety of the two treatment methods. RESULTS There was no statistical significance in NIHSS score and Barthel Index between the tirofiban group and the LMWH group on the first day of admission and the next day with stroke progression (p > 0.05). After stroke progression, tirofiban and LMWH were separately used for treatment in the two groups. We found that the NIHSS score of the tirofiban group was lower than that of the LMWH group, and the Barthel Index score was higher than that of the LMWH group at discharge (p < 0.05). After three months of follow-up, the mRS score of the tirofiban group was dramatically higher than that of the LMWH group (p < 0.05). No significant harmful or adverse reactions, such as bleeding events, were found in the two groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Tirofiban may be more effective and safer than LMWH in controlling the progression of acute pontine infarction, but further and large-sample studies are still needed to confirm this finding.

Abstract
Bacteria express lytic enzymes such as glycosidases, which have potentially self-destructive peptidoglycan (PG)-degrading activity and, therefore, require careful regulation in bacteria. The PG glycosidase EtgA is regulated by localization to the assembling type III secretion system (T3SS), generating a hole in the PG layer for the T3SS to reach the outer membrane. The EtgA localization was found to be mediated via EtgA interacting with the T3SS inner rod protein EscI. To gain structural insights into the EtgA recognition of EscI, we determined the 2.01 Å resolution structure of an EscI (51-87)-linker-EtgA fusion protein designed based on AlphaFold2 predictions. The structure revealed EscI residues 72-87 forming an α-helix interacting with the backside of EtgA, distant from the active site. EscI residues 56-71 also were found to interact with EtgA, with these residues stretching across the EtgA surface. The ability of the EscI to interact with EtgA was also probed using an EscI peptide. The EscI peptide comprising residues 66-87, slightly larger than the observed EscI α-helix, was shown to bind to EtgA using microscale thermophoresis and thermal shift differential scanning fluorimetry. The EscI peptide also had a two-fold activity-enhancing effect on EtgA, whereas the EscI-EtgA fusion protein enhanced activity over four-fold compared to EtgA. Our studies suggest that EtgA regulation by EscI could be trifold involving protein localization, protein activation, and protein stabilization components. Analysis of the sequence conservation of the EscI EtgA interface residues suggested a possible conservation of such regulation for related proteins from different bacteria.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to compare the effect of topical laryngeal lidocaine with intravenous lidocaine before endotracheal intubation on the incidence and severity of postoperative sore throat, hoarseness, and cough. PATIENTS AND METHODS This prospective randomized controlled study enrolled 144 patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy with endotracheal intubation. The patients were randomized to three groups and received 2% lidocaine by topical laryngeal spray (group T), intravenous 2% lidocaine (group I), and the equivalent volume of intravenous saline (group C) before intubation. The incidence and severity of sore throat, hoarseness, and cough reaction at 0.5, 1, 6, and 24 h after extubation were collected. RESULTS The incidence of sore throat was significantly lower in group T than in groups I and C (6.4% vs. 37.2% and 86.7%, p < 0.001), respectively at 0.5 h after extubation, and it was significantly lower in group I than that in group C (37.2% vs. 86.7%, p < 0.001). Both the incidence of hoarseness and cough were significantly lower in group T than in group I and in group C (14.9% vs. 97.7% and 97.8%, p < 0.001, and 19.1% vs. 72.0% and 93.3%, p < 0.001), respectively. The severity of sore throat, hoarseness and cough in group T was significantly lower than that in group I and that in group C (p < 0.05), and it was significantly lower in group I than in group C (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Both topical laryngeal lidocaine and intravenous lidocaine before intubation have positive effects on preventing sore throat. Topical laryngeal route was superior to intravenous route. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical outcome of the transalveolar approach with the small segmentation method for inclined maxillary sinus floor elevation. METHODS Sixty-one patients with an inclined maxillary sinus floor (tilt angle ≥ 10°) and insufficient residual bone height in the posterior maxilla were included and grouped according to the tilt angle of the sinus floor, with group A having patients with the tilt angle ≥ 10° and ≤ 30° and group B having patients with the tilt angle > 30°. After completing sinus membrane elevation and bone augmentation using bone substitute materials, the implants were inserted at the same appointment, and the restoration was completed after 5-6 months of osseointegration. The preoperative sinus floor level and sinus floor elevation achieved postoperatively were assessed and recorded. At pre- and post-operative timepoints, the sagittal plane of the cone beam computed tomography was used to evaluate the bone height changes at the peak, middle and valley points in the slope segment intended for implant implantation. RESULTS Osseointegration was evident in all 61 patients, and the final restoration was completed with functional loading. After assessing the normality and homogeneity of variance, two-sample t-test or nonparametric tests were employed to estimate the differences in the bone height changes. The degrees of freedom (df) for this analysis were 59. The elevation attained at the middle point in groups A and B were 6.71 ± 1.38 and 5.75 ± 1.56 mm, respectively, demonstrating a significant difference (p < 0.05). Furthermore, at the peak and valley points, group A exhibited bone height changes of 5.79 ± 1.74 and 6.06 ± 1.45 mm, respectively, compared to group B with changes measuring 4.63 ± 2.18 and 5.58 ± 2.39 mm, respectively, with no significant difference in the two groups (p ≥ 0.05). The prevalence of intraoperative sinus membrane perforation was assessed using the chi-square test. It was found that four cases in group A and five cases in group B experienced sinus membrane perforation, with no significant difference in the two groups (p ≥ 0.05, df = 1). CONCLUSION The transalveolar approach using the small segmentation method suggests a promising approach for elevating the inclined maxillary sinus floor.

Abstract
The clinical characteristics, auxiliary examinations, skin and neuropathological features of 7 patients who had reticular cyanosis with peripheral neuropathy from the Department of Neurology, Huashan Hospital, Fudan University from January 2019 to December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. Among the 7 patients, 5 were female and 2 were male.The age of onset of peripheral neuropathy was (39.8±21.3) years and the disease duration of peripheral neuropathy was (2.7±2.3) years. Three patients had acute onset and 4 patients had chronic onset. All the patients had limb numbness, with limb weakness in 6 patients and pain in 5 cases. Neuroelectrophysiological examination revealed 1 case of mononeuropathy, 2 cases of polyneuropathy, 2 cases of peripheral neuropathy, and 2 cases of sensory neuron neuropathy. Skin biopsy was performed in 3 patients, which presented hyperplasia and expansion of blood vessels in the dermis with lymphocyte infiltration. Nerve biopsy was performed in 3 patients, indicating axonal damage. Reticular cyanosis with peripheral neuropathy characterizes with numbness and weakness of limbs, most of which were accompanied by pain. Electrophysiological changes are in various forms. The pathological changes are dominated by the damage of axonal.

Abstract
Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) are a group of highly heterogeneous systemic autoimmune diseases, of which clinically amyopathic dermatomyositis (CADM) is a distinct sub-type. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a life-threatening medical condition that can occur as a complication of connective tissue diseases. Herein, our report first suggests that PH can develop in CADM. A 48-year-old woman came to our hospital due to a 3 months history of facial edema and shortness of breath. Relevant examinations revealed Gottron's sign, normal creatinine kinase levels, elevated levels of mean pulmonary artery pressure, double-positive anti-MDA5 and anti-Ro52 antibodies, and typical pathological changes associated with myositis. The diagnosis of CADM combined with PH was considered. The patient responded well to the immunosuppression therapy and PH-related drug therapy. We provide further insights that patients with IIM need to undergo regular assessment of PH.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Palmitic acid (PA), the major saturated fatty acid in the blood, often induces the initiation and progression of diabetic kidney disease (DKD). However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. DACH1 is an important regulator of kidney functions. Herein, we investigated the roles of DACH1 in PA-induced kidney injury. METHODS Clinical data from the NHANES database were subjected to analyse the association between serum PA (sPA), blood glucose and kidney function. Molecular docking of PA was performed with DACH1. Immunohistochemistry, cell viability, annexin V/7-AAD double staining, TUNEL assay, immunofluorescent staining, autophagic flux analysis, qRT-PCR and western blot were performed. RESULTS Clinical data confirmed that sPA was increased significantly in the pathoglycemia individuals compared with controls and correlated negatively with renal function. Our findings suggested that PA could dock with DACH1. DACH1 enhances cell viability by inhibiting apoptosis and attenuating autophagy blockage induced by PA. Furthermore, the results demonstrated that DACH1 ameliorated inflammation and fibrosis through TLR4/MyD88/NF-κB and TGF-β/Smad signalling pathway in PA-treated renal tubular epithelial cell line (HK-2). CONCLUSIONS This study proved that sPA presents a risk factor for kidney injuries and DACH1 might serve as a protective target against renal function deterioration in diabetic patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii infections among patients with hematological diseases, so as to provide insights into improving the prognosis and quality of life among patients with hematological diseases. METHODS A total of 240 patients with hematological diseases (including 170 patients with hematological tumors and 70 patients with non-tumor hematological diseases) admitted to The Affiliated Hospital of Putian University during the period from January 1, 2021 through October 10, 2023 and 500 healthy volunteers in the hospital during the same period were enrolled. Subjects' demographics and serum samples were collected, and serum specific IgG and IgM antibodies against T. gondii were detected using the chemiluminescence assay, with any of a positive IgG or IgM antibody defined as a positive T. gondii infection. The seroprevalence of specific IgG and IgM antibodies against T. gondii was compared between patients with hematological diseases and healthy volunteers. RESULTS The mean age (F = 2.034, P > 0.05) and gender distribution (χ2 = 0.462, P > 0.05) were comparable among patients with hematological tumors, patients with non-tumor hematological diseases and healthy volunteers, and there was no significant difference in the proportion of history of cat or dog contacts between patients with hematological diseases and healthy volunteers (χ2 = 0, P > 0.05). The seroprevalence of anti-T. gondii antibody was significantly higher among patients with hematological diseases than among healthy volunteers (15.8% vs. 0.6%; χ2 = 71.902, P < 0.01), and there was a significant difference in the seroprevalence of anti-T. gondii antibody among patients with hematological tumors (18.2%), patients with non-tumor hematological diseases (10.0%) and healthy volunteers (χ2 = 78.327, P < 0.01). The seroprevalence of anti-T. gondii antibody was significantly higher among patients with hematological tumors and non-tumor hematological diseases than among healthy volunteers (both P values < 0.05), while no significant difference was seen in the seroprevalence of anti-T. gondii antibody between patients with hematological tumors and non-tumor hematological diseases (P > 0.05). In addition, the proportion of history of cat or dog contacts was significantly higher among patients with hematological diseases that were positive for serum anti-T. gondii anti-body than among those negative for serum anti-T. gondii antibody (21.1% vs. 5.4%; χ2 = 8.653, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS There is a high seroprevalene rate of T. gondii infections among hematological diseases, which is significantly greater than that among healthy volunteers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In the phase 3 KEYNOTE-040 study, pembrolizumab prolonged OS versus chemotherapy in previously treated recurrent or metastatic (R/M) HNSCC. We present a post hoc subgroup analysis by disease recurrence pattern: recurrent-only, recurrent and metastatic (recurrent-metastatic), and metastatic-only HNSCC. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients had HNSCC that progressed during or after platinum-containing treatment for R/M disease or had recurrence or progression within 3-6 months of previous platinum-containing definitive therapy for locally advanced disease. Patients were randomly assigned (1:1) to pembrolizumab 200 mg Q3W or investigator's choice of standards of care (SOC): methotrexate, docetaxel, or cetuximab. Outcomes included OS, PFS, ORR, and DOR. The data cutoff was May 15, 2017. RESULTS There were 125 patients (pembrolizumab, 53; SOC, 72) in the recurrent-only subgroup, 204 in the recurrent-metastatic subgroup (pembrolizumab, 108; SOC, 96), and 166 in the metastatic-only subgroup (pembrolizumab, 86; SOC, 80). The hazard ratio (95% CI) for death for pembrolizumab versus SOC was 0.83 (0.55-1.25) in the recurrent-only, 0.78 (0.58-1.06) in the recurrent-metastatic, and 0.74 (0.52-1.05) in the metastatic-only subgroups. PFS was similar between treatment arms in all subgroups. ORR was 22.6% for pembrolizumab versus 16.7% for SOC in the recurrent-only, 10.2% versus 6.3% in the recurrent-metastatic, and 15.1% versus 8.8% in the metastatic-only subgroups. DOR was numerically longer with pembrolizumab in all subgroups. CONCLUSION Pembrolizumab provided numerically longer OS and durable responses in all subgroups compared with SOC, suggesting that patients with previously treated R/M HNSCC benefit from pembrolizumab regardless of recurrence pattern.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate trends of influenza vaccine uptake before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in the USA and explore the associated factors. STUDY DESIGN This was a cross-sectional study. METHODS Using self-reported data from the National Health Interview Survey during 2014-2021 (response rates ranging from 50.7 to 70.1%), we estimated influenza vaccine uptake. Log-binomial regression models were used to test uptake changes with adjustment for and stratification by demographic and health factors. RESULTS We included 58,249 children (mean age: 8.7 years; male: 51.1%) and 205,034 adults (mean age: 47.6 years; male: 48.2%). The prevalence ratio (PR) of uptake change comparing the intra- (2020-2021) to the pre-COVID-19 period (2014-2019) was 0.72 among children, with a 10.7% reduction. Uptake changes were found across subgroups, with higher reduction among those aged 0-2 years, non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic ethnicity, from South and West regions, and with lower household income. For adults, uptake increased before and during COVID-19 (PR = 1.15, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.12-1.18) but a 2.3% reduction was found among healthcare personnel (PR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.90-0.997). CONCLUSIONS Influenza vaccination decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic among children and healthcare personnel. Structure inequality to influenza vaccination warrants measures to improve vaccine uptake among vulnerable groups.

Abstract
PURPOSE A combined resting state functional connectivity MRI (fcMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) metric called structural and functional connectivity index (SFCI) was recently proposed for tracking disease status and progression in multiple sclerosis (MS). The metric combines fcMRI and transverse diffusivity (TD) along different functional pathways involved in principle symptomatic domains of MS. In a longitudinal study of patients with MS receiving the same MS therapy, initial worsening of transcallosal (TC) motor and frontoparietal (FP) cognitive networks, as measured by fcMRI and DTI over the first year was followed by stabilization in the second year of follow-up. In this study we have (i) probed relationships between individual and composite neurological measures of MS with SFCI and its individual components along TC motor and FP cognitive pathways and (ii) compared sensitivity of SFCI to treatment-induced longitudinal changes with each individual imaging measure. METHODS Twenty five patients with MS (15 female, age 42 ± 8 y) participated in this study and were scanned at 3 T whole body MRI scanner with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and resting-state functional connectivity MRI (fcMRI) scan protocol at baseline and 6, 12, 18 and 24 months after starting fingolimod. fcMRI and TD along TC and FP pathways were combined to form structural and functional connectivity index (SFCI) at each time point. Correlations between individual/combined neurological measures and individual imaging components/SFCI at baseline and were evaluated and compared. In addition, efficacies of individual and combined imaging metrics in tracking network integrity were compared. RESULTS Individual TD along the TC pathway was significantly inversely correlated with all individual/composite neurological scores. There were moderate correlations of TC and FP components of SFCI with most of the neurological scores, and the pathway-combined SFCI was significantly correlated with all neurological scores. Trend-level increases of both TC and FP fcMRI were observed during the second year of follow-up, both TC and FP TD increased significantly in the first year and then stabilized during the second year. A trend toward a decrease in combined imaging metrics along TC and FP were observed during the first year, followed by a trend toward an increase in these metrics during the second year, while a significant decrease in SFCI during the first year followed by a significant increase during the second year was observed. CONCLUSIONS SFCI was more effective in tracking network integrity/disease progression than individual pathway-specific components, which supports its use as an imaging marker for MS disease status and progression.

Abstract
Mastitis is the most common disease of dairy cows that incurs severe economic losses to the dairy industry. Currently, environmental mastitis pathogens are a major problem for most dairy farms. A current commercially available Escherichia coli vaccine does not prevent clinical mastitis and production losses, likely due to antibody accessibility and antigenic variation issues. Therefore, a novel vaccine that prevents clinical disease and production losses is critically needed. Recently a nutritional immunity approach, which restricts bacterial iron uptake by immunologically sequestering conserved iron-binding enterobactin (Ent), has been developed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the immunogenicity of the keyhole limpet hemocyanin-enterobactin (KLH-Ent) conjugate vaccine in dairy cows. Twelve pregnant Holstein dairy cows in their first through third lactations were randomized to the control or vaccine group, with 6 cows per group. The vaccine group received 3 subcutaneous vaccinations of KLH-Ent with adjuvants at drying off (D0), 20 (D21), and 40 (D42) days after drying off. The control group was injected with phosphate-buffered saline (pH 7.4) mixed with the same adjuvants at the same time points. Vaccination effects were assessed over the study period until the end of the first month of lactation. The KLH-Ent vaccine did not cause any systemic adverse reactions or reduction in milk production. Compared with the control group, the vaccine elicited significantly higher levels of serum Ent-specific IgG at calving (C0) and 30 d postcalving (C30), mainly its IgG2 fraction, which was significantly higher at D42, C0, C14, and C30 d, with no significant change in IgG1 levels. Milk Ent-specific IgG and IgG2 levels in the vaccine group were significantly higher on C30. Fecal microbial community structures were similar for both control and vaccine groups on the same day and shifted directionally along the sampling days. In conclusion, the KLH-Ent vaccine successfully triggered strong Ent-specific immune responses in dairy cows without significantly affecting the gut microbiota diversity and health. The results show that Ent conjugate vaccine is a promising nutritional immunity approach in control of E. coli mastitis in dairy cows.

Abstract
Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is continuously causing significant economic losses with massive poultry depopulations. Airborne transmission of HPAI was suspected, as initial bird mortalities were reported near air inlets of poultry houses. In addition, infected farms were distant, indicating that the viruses carried by dust particles might help the viruses travel for long distances in the environment. The objective of this study focused on simulating the airborne transmission of HPAI by using computational modeling to assess the risk of airborne and deposited avian influenza (AI) carried by poultry-litter dust particles. The Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) modeling was used in this study. Data from 168 infected cases in the Mid-Western area of U.S. were obtained from the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and Watt Poultry. The concentration simulation modeling was performed to estimate the airborne and deposited AI concentration carried by PM2.5 dust particles. Results showed that concentrations of airborne AI, deposited AI, and combined AI transmitted to other farms in a day were lower than the minimal infective dose for poultry. In most of the scenarios, the predicted probability of infection showed that Iowa-infected farms and turkey poultry houses had the highest infection probability. The findings may provide an understanding of the risk of airborne HPAI virus carried by dust particles and suggest the factors that influence long-distance airborne transmission.

Abstract
The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment is a dark matter detector centered on a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. This Letter reports results from LUX-ZEPLIN's first search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with an exposure of 60 live days using a fiducial mass of 5.5 t. A profile-likelihood ratio analysis shows the data to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis, setting new limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon, spin-dependent WIMP-neutron, and spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross sections for WIMP masses above 9 GeV/c^{2}. The most stringent limit is set for spin-independent scattering at 36 GeV/c^{2}, rejecting cross sections above 9.2×10^{-48} cm at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract
Objective: To identify and analyze 3D architecture of the mutational sites of susceptible genes in a pedigree with familial hypercholesterolemia-like phenotype (FHLP). Methods: This is a case series study. A pedigree with suspected familial hypercholesterolemia was surveyed. The proband admitted in Beijing Anzhen Hospital in April 2019. Whole-exome sequencing was performed to determine the mutational sites of susceptible genes in the proband. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) sequencing was used to verify the pathogenic variant on proband's relatives. The structural and functional changes of the proteins were analyzed and predicted by Discovery Studio 4.0 and PyMol 2.0. Results: The patients in the pedigree showed abnormal lipid profiles, especially elevated levels of total cholesterol(TC). The genetic screening detected the c.1330C>T SNP in the exon 8 of lipase C (LIPC) gene, this mutation leads to an amino acid substitution from arginine to cysteine at position 444 (Arg444Cys), in the proband and proband's father and brother. In this family, members with this mutation exhibited elevated TC, whereas lipid profile was normal from the proband's mother without this mutation. This finding indicated that LIPC: c.1330C>T mutation might be the mutational sites of susceptible genes. The analysis showed that Arg444Cys predominantly affected the ligand-binding property of the protein, but had a limited impact on catalytic function. Conclusion: LIPC: c.1330C>T is a new mutational site of susceptible genes in this FHLP pedigree.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the effect of exosomes secreted by lipopolysaccharides (LPS)-stimulated macrophages on hepatic stellate cell activation and migration and explore the underlying molecular mechanism. METHODS Human monocyte THP-1 cells were induced to differentiate into macrophages using propylene glycol methyl ether acetic acid (PMA, 100 ng/mL, 24 h) followed by stimulation with LPS, and the culture supernatant of macrophages was collected for extraction of the exosomes by ultracentrifugation. The expression of miR-155-5p in the exosomes was detected using qRT-PCR. A Transwell co-culture system was used to observe the effects of the macrophage-derived exosomes on LX2 cell (a hepatic stellate cell line) proliferation, migration, oxidative stress and the expression of fibrosis biomarkers, which were also observed in LX2 cells transfected with miR-155-5p-mimics or miR-155-5p-inhibitors. Western blotting was used to detect the expressions of SOCS1 and its downstream signal pathway proteins. RESULTS Treatment with the exosomes from LPS-stimulated macrophages significantly enhanced the proliferation and migration ability of LX2 cells and increased the levels of oxidative stress and expressions of the fibrosis markers such as type Ⅰ collagen (P < 0.05). The expression of miR-155-5p in the exosomes secreted by macrophages was significantly increased after LPS treatment (P < 0.01). LX2 cells overexpressing miR-155-5p also exhibited significantly enhanced proliferation and migration with increased oxidative stress levels and expression of type Ⅰ collagen (P < 0.05), and interference of miR-155-5p expression produced the opposite effects. Western blotting showed that miR-155-5p overexpression obviously inhibited SOCS1 expression and promoted p-Smad2/3, Smad2/3 and RhoA protein expressions in LX2 cells (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION LPS stimulation of the macrophages increases miR-155-5p expression in the exosomes to promote activation and migration and increase oxidative stress and collagen production in hepatic stellate cells.

Abstract
This research aims to explore the clinical characteristics and treatment of transplant ureteral strictures. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data from fifteen patients diagnosed with transplant ureteral stricture. Of the fifteen patients, five underwent regular ureteral stent or nephrostomy tube exchanges, while ten underwent open surgery. There were no significant differences in basic clinical characteristics between the two groups. The median follow-up time for regular ureteral stent or nephrostomy tube exchanges and open surgery group was 36.8 (11.8-56.0) months and 25.0 (4.5-31.2) months, respectively. Among patients who underwent regular exchanges, one required regular dialysis. Nine patients in the open surgery group had successful removal of the ureteral stent. Our findings suggest that regular ureteral stent or nephrostomy tube exchanges, as well as open surgery, are effective treatment options for transplant ureteral strictures.

Abstract
Black phosphorus (BP), an emerging two-dimensional material with unique optical, thermoelectric, and mechanical properties, has been proposed as bioactive material for tissue engineering. However, its toxic effects on physiological systems remain obscure. The present study investigated the cytotoxicity of BP to vascular endothelial cells. BP nanosheets (BPNSs) with a diameter of 230 nm were fabricated via a classical liquid-phase exfoliation method. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were used to determine the cytotoxicity induced by BPNSs (0.31-80 μg/mL). When the concentrations were over 2.5 μg/mL, BPNSs adversely affected the cytoskeleton and cell migration. Furthermore, BPNSs caused mitochondrial dysfunction and generated excessive intercellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) at tested concentrations after 24 h. BPNSs could influence the expression of apoptosis-related genes, including the P53 and BCL-2 family, resulting in the apoptosis of HUVECs. Therefore, the viability and function of HUVECs were adversely influenced by the concentration of BPNSs over 2.5 μg/mL. These findings provide significant information for the potential applications of BP in tissue engineering.

Abstract
Natural products are ligands and potential inhibitors of Alzheimer's disease (AD) tau. Dihydromyricetin (DHM) is a CNS active natural product. Despite having signature polyphenolic character, DHM is ostensibly hydrophobic owing to intermolecular hydrogen bonds that shield hydrophilic phenols. Our research shows DHM becomes ionized at near-neutral pH allowing formulation of salts with transformed solubility. The MicroED co-crystal structure with trolamine reveals DHM salts as metastable solids with unlocked hydrogen bonding and a thermodynamic bent to solubilize in water. All salt formulations show better inhibitory activity against AD tau than the non-salt form, with efficacies correlating to enhanced solubilities. These results underscore the role of structural chemistry in guiding selection of solubilizing agents for chemical formulation. We propose DHM salts are appropriate formulations for research as dietary supplements to promote healthy aging by combating protein misfolding. Additionally, DHM is a suitable lead for medicinal chemistry and possible development of CNS pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
The cytokinin two-component signal transduction system (TCS) is involved in many biological processes, including hormone signal transduction and plant growth regulation. Although cytokinin TCS has been well characterized in Arabidopsis thaliana, its role in tomato remains elusive. In this study, we characterized the diversity and function of response regulator (RR) genes, a critical component of TCS, in tomato. In total, we identified 31 RR genes in the tomato genome. These SlRR genes were classified into three subgroups (type-A, type-B and type-C). Various stress-responsive cis-elements were present in the tomato RR gene promoters. Their expression responses under pesticide treatment were evaluated by transcriptome analysis. Their expression under heat, cold, ABA, salinity and NaHCO3 treatments was further investigated by qRT-PCR and complemented with the available transcription data under these treatments. Specifically, SlRR13 expression was significantly upregulated under salinity, drought, cold and pesticide stress and was downregulated under ABA treatment. SlRR23 expression was induced under salt treatment, while the transcription level of SlRR1 was increased under cold and decreased under salt stress. We also found that GATA transcription factors played a significant role in the regulation of SlRR genes. Based on our results, tomato SlRR genes are involved in responses to abiotic stress in tomato and could be implemented in molecular breeding approaches to increase resistance of tomato to environmental stresses.

Abstract
Ultraviolet (UV) photofunctionalization has been demonstrated to synergistically improve the osteoblast response and reduce biofilm formation on titanium (Ti) surfaces. However, it remains obscure how photofunctionalization affects soft tissue integration and microbial adhesion on the transmucosal part of a dental implant. This study aimed to investigate the effect of UVC (100–280 nm) pretreatment on the response of human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) and Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. g.) to Ti-based implant surfaces. The smooth and anodized nano-engineered Ti-based surfaces were triggered by UVC irradiation, respectively. The results showed that both smooth and nano-surfaces acquired super hydrophilicity without structural alteration after UVC photofunctionalization. UVC-activated smooth surfaces enhanced the adhesion and proliferation of HGFs compared to the untreated smooth ones. Regarding the anodized nano-engineered surfaces, UVC pretreatment weakened the fibroblast attachment but had no adverse effects on proliferation and the related gene expression. Additionally, both Ti-based surfaces could effectively inhibit P. g. adhesion after UVC irradiation. Therefore, the UVC photofunctionalization could be more potentially favorable to synergistically improve the fibroblast response and inhibit P. g. adhesion on the smooth Ti-based surfaces.

Abstract
AIM To explore the value of B-flow (B-mode blood flow) imaging and its enhanced mode in perforator mapping. MATERIALS AND METHODS Before surgery, B-flow imaging, enhanced B-flow imaging, colour Doppler flow imaging (CDFI), and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) were used to detect the skin-perforating vessels and small vessels in the fat layer of the donor site. Taking the intra-operative results as the reference standard, the diagnostic consistency and efficiency of the four modes were compared. Statistical analysis was performed using the Friedman M-test, Cochran's Q-test, and the Z-test. RESULTS Thirty flaps were excised, with 34 skin-perforating vessels and 25 non-skin-perforating vessels, as confirmed during surgery. In order of the number of skin-perforating vessels detected, the results showed that enhanced B-flow imaging detected more vessels than B-flow imaging and CDFI (all p<0.05), CEUS detected more vessels than B-flow imaging and CDFI (all p<0.05), B-flow imaging detected more vessels than CDFI (p<0.05). All four modes had remarkable and satisfactory diagnostic consistency and effectiveness, but B-flow imaging was the best (sensitivity 100%, specificity 92%, Youden index 0.92). In order of the number of small vessels in the fat layer detected, the results showed that enhanced B-flow imaging detected more vessels than CEUS, B-flow imaging, and CDFI (all p<0.05). CEUS detected more vessels than B-flow imaging and CDFI (all p<0.05). CONCLUSION B-flow imaging is an alternative method for perforator mapping. Enhanced B-flow imaging can reveal the microcirculation of flaps.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Changes in the oral cavity can reflect other changes throughout the body. This study aimed to investigate the association of dental caries with muscle mass, muscle strength, and sarcopenia, and also to describe the microbial diversity, composition, and community structure of severe dental caries and sarcopenia. DESIGN Cross-sectional study based on a Chinese population aged from 50 to 85 years. SETTING Communities from Lanxi City, Zhejiang Province, China. PARTICIPANTS A total of 1,442 participants aged from 50 to 85 years from a general community (62.8% women; median age 61.0 [interquartile range: 55.0, 68.0]). MEASUREMENTS Dental caries was assessed by the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index. Sarcopenia was defined as the presence of both low muscle mass (assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scanning) and low muscle strength (assessed by handgrip strength). Multivariate logistic regression models were used to analyze the association of dental caries with muscle mass, muscle strength, and sarcopenia. Fecal samples underwent 16S rRNA profiling to evaluate the diversity and composition of the gut microbiota in patients with severe dental caries and/or sarcopenia. RESULTS In the fully adjusted logistic models, dental caries was positively associated with low muscle strength (DMFT ≥ 7: OR, 1.61; 95% CI, 1.25-2.06), and sarcopenia (DMFT ≥ 7: OR, 1.51; 95% CI, 1.01-2.26), but not low muscle mass. Severe dental caries was positively associated with higher alpha-diversity indices (richness, chao1, and ACE, all p < 0.05) and associated with beta-diversity based on Bray-Curtis distance (p = 0.006). The severe dental caries group and the sarcopenia group overlapped with 11 depleted and 13 enriched genera. CONCLUSION Dental caries was positively associated with low muscle strength and sarcopenia but not muscle mass, and this association was more pronounced in male individuals. Significant differences were observed in gut microbiota composition both in severe dental caries and sarcopenia, and there was an overlap of the genera features. Future longitudinal studies are needed to clarify causal relationships.

Abstract
Introduction Depression is a serious psychiatric disorder characterized by prolonged sadness, loss of interest or pleasure. The dominant alpha peak activity in resting-state EEG is suggested to be an intrinsic neural marker for diagnosis of mental disorders. Methods To investigate an association between alpha peak activity and depression severity, the present study recorded resting-state EEG (EGI 128 channels, off-line average reference, source reconstruction by a distributed inverse method with the sLORETA normalization, parcellation of 68 Desikan-Killiany regions) from 155 patients with depression (42 males, mean age 35 years) and acquired patients' scores of Self-Rating Depression Scales. We measured both the alpha peak amplitude that is more related to synchronous neural discharging and the alpha peak frequency that is more associated with brain metabolism. Results The results showed that over widely distributed brain regions, individual patients' alpha peak amplitudes were negatively correlated with their depressive scores, and individual patients' alpha peak frequencies were positively correlated with their depressive scores. Discussion These results reveal that alpha peak amplitude and frequency are associated with self-rating depressive score in different manners, and the finding suggests the potential of alpha peak activity in resting-state EEG acting as an important neural factor in evaluation of depression severity in supplement to diagnosis.

Abstract
Ricinus communis is an important oilseed crop worldwide and is also considered one of the best potential plants for salt-affected soil improvement in northeast China. However, little is known about photosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism in this plant, nor the distribution of carbohydrates in cotyledons and roots under salinity stress. In the present study, seedling growth, gas exchange parameters (PN , E, gs and Ci ), carbohydrate (fructose, sucrose, glucose, soluble sugar and starch) metabolism and related enzymes and genes were measured in Ricinus plants. Under salt stress, PN of cotyledons decreased significantly (P < 0.05), resulting in weak photosynthetic capacity. Furthermore, salt stress increased sucrose and glucose content in cotyledons, but decreased soluble sugar and starch content. However, sucrose increased and starch decreased in roots. This may be correlated with the increasing sugar metabolism under salinity, including notable changes in sugar-related enzyme activities (SPS, SuSy, α-amylase and β-amylase) and gene expression of RcINV, RcSUS, RcAmY, RcBAM and RcGBE1. The results suggest that salinity reduces photosynthesis of cotyledons, alters carbohydrate allocation between cotyledons and roots and also promotes starch utilization in cotyledons and starch biosynthesis in roots, leading to a functional imbalance between cotyledons and roots. Together, these findings provide insights into the crucial role of sugar metabolism in improving salt-tolerance of Ricinus during the early seedling growth stage.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of lidocaine plaster combined with gabapentin in the treatment of herpes zoster neuralgia (HZN). Methods: A total of 93 patients diagnosed with HZN from June 4, 2021 to January 5, 2022 in the Department of Pain Clinic of Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital were selected, and their gender was not limited. They were divided into 3 groups by random number table method: group A (n=32) prescribed gabapentin alone, group B (n=30) lidocaine plaster alone, and group C (n=31) lidocaine plaster combined with gabapentin. After excluding patients who did not meet the criteria, there were 28 cases in group A, 28 cases in group B, and 29 cases in group C. The visual analogue scale (VAS), the short-form McGill pain questionnaire (SF-MPQ) score, and drug dosage and adverse reaction in each group at pre-treatment (T0), post-treatment in one week (T1), in two weeks (T2), in four weeks (T4), and in 12 weeks (T12) were recorded and evaluated; Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score and Medical Outcomes Study short-form 36 (SF-36) score at T0, T4, and T12 were recorded. Adverse reactions and drug dosage in each group were documented. Repeated measures ANOVA was used to compare the curative effects of the three groups at different time points before and after treatment. Results: The ages of the three groups of patients were (67.8±10.0), (60.9±11.4) and (63.5±12.5) years old respectively (P=0.318), and the proportions of men were 46.4 % (13 cases), 35.7% (10 cases) and 44.8 % (13 cases), respectively (P=0.472). After treatment, the VAS scores and SF-MPQ scores of patients in the three groups were decreased at each time point compared with those before treatment (all P<0.05), the VAS and SF-MPQ scores of patients in group C at T12 time point were 1.2±0.4 and 5.2±2.4 respectively, which were lower than those of patients in groups A and B (both P<0.05). The dosages of gabapentin and lidocaine plaster in group C were lower than those in groups A and B at each time point after treatment (all P<0.05). The PSQI scores of patients in the three groups at T4 and T12 were lower than those before treatment (all P<0.05). The PSQI scores of patients in group C at T4 and T12 were 5.7±1.2 and 4.5±1.2, which were lower than those of patients in groups A and B. (all P<0.05), The SF-36 scores of patients in three groups at T4 and T12 were higher than those before treatment (all P<0.05), and the SF-36 scores of group C at T4 and T12 were 91.7±8.5, 93.1±6.3, which were higher than that of patients in groups A and B (both P<0.05). The incidence of adverse reactions in the three groups were 35.7% (9 cases), 10.7% (3 cases), and 13.8% (4 cases) respectively (P<0.05), the adverse reactions in groups B and C were less than those in group A (P<0.05), and there was no statistical difference between groups B and C (P>0.05). Conclusion: Lidocaine plaster combined with gabapentin has better analgesic effect in the treatment of HZN, with less incidence of adverse reactions, and can reduce the dosage of systemic drugs, improve patients' sleep and quality of life, and thus could provide a safe and effective method for the treatment of HZN.

Abstract
The dissolved carbon concentration, which is responsible for aquatic ecosystem productivity and water quality, is tightly coupled with hydrological processes. Excess dissolved carbon may exacerbate eutrophication and hypoxia in aquatic ecosystems and lead to deterioration of water quality. Storm events dominate the dynamics of dissolved carbon concentrations, and this nonlinear behavior exhibits significant time scale dependence. Here, we identified inter- and intra-event variability in the dissolved carbon concentration-discharge (C-Q) relationship in an agriculture-intensive catchment. The driving factors of C-Q hysteresis patterns for dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) and organic carbon (DOC) were quantified by redundancy analysis combined with hierarchical partitioning. At the inter-event scale, DIC exhibited mainly clockwise hysteresis, indicating an exhaustible, proximal source (e.g., groundwater). However, DOC hysteresis was generally counter-clockwise, indicating distal and plentiful sources (e.g., soil water) in the agricultural catchment. Hierarchical partitioning showed that total rainfall, peak discharge and flood intensity explained 28.38% of the total variation in C-Q hysteresis for DIC and 39.87% for DOC at the inter-event scale. At the intra-event scale, time series analysis of dissolved carbon concentration and discharge indicated the interconversion of supply limitation to transport limitation, which depends on the activation of the specific DIC or DOC source zones. These findings provide significant insights into understanding the dynamics of dissolved carbon during storm periods and are important for targeted watershed management practices aimed at reducing carbon loading to surface waters.

Abstract
Diarrhoeal disease continues to be a major health problem in many parts of the world, especially in developing countries, mainly due to the lack of access to sanitation, water, and hygienic living conditions. Identifying the determinants of diarrhoeal infections continues to be a challenge in developing countries. In this study, we ascertained the factors behind diarrhoea among inhabitants of informal settlements in the city of Durban, South Africa. Prevalence of diarrhoea in the study area varied between 7-year historical clinical records and data collected during the current study (primary data), with the primary data giving the highest monthly prevalence odds ratio (POR) up to 18.1 (±1.6)%. The main factors associated with diarrhoeal infections were open defaecation (POR = 1.8; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.9-3.12), use of shared sanitation (POR = 1.7; 95%; CI: 1.05-2.26), and exposure to faecal matter around the homes (POR = 1.69; 95% CI: 1.25-3.10). Several other factors were also determined to be associated with diarrhoeal infections, such as hygiene practices in the communities, the non-treatment of water before use, and the presence of solid waste and faecal materials around the households. This study shows that diarrhoeal disease infections in informal settlements could be multifactorial; therefore, a multifactorial approach is needed to reduce these infections. These could include improving education on hygiene practices within the home setting as well as in public places, such as the community ablution blocks.
