Lower socioeconomic status associated with higher tuberculosis rate in South Korea. BMC Pulm Med 2023; 23:418. Abstract
BACKGROUND Tuberculosis is an infectious disease influenced by social factors rather than a simple infectious disease. In this study, we investigated the relationship between tuberculosis rates and socioeconomic status. METHODS This study was conducted using data of the 49,483 participants of the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) VI-VIII (2013-2021). The relationships between tuberculosis rates and the quartiles of monthly household income and education level were examined using a multivariate logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The KNHANES data revealed that the prevalence of tuberculosis as substantially related to monthly household income (odds ratio [OR], 6.0; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.1-32.0 for lowest vs. highest incomes) and education level (OR, 3.8; 95% CI, 1.2-12.0 for 10-12 years vs. ≥13 years; OR, 4.1; 95% CI, 1.2-14.8 for ≤ 6 years vs. ≥13 years). Furthermore, current tuberculosis treatment was significantly related to monthly household income and education level. CONCLUSION There were substantial correlations between tuberculosis rates and socioeconomic status in South Korea.

Abstract
The East Sea (Japan Sea), a small marginal sea in the northwestern Pacific, is ventilated deeply down to the bottom and sensitive to changing surface conditions. Addressing the response of this marginal sea to the hydrological cycle and atmospheric forcing would be helpful for better understanding present and future environmental changes in oceans at the global and regional scales. Here, we present an analysis of observations revealing a slowdown of the long-term deepening in water boundaries associated with changes of water formation rate. Our results indicate that bottom (central) water formation has been enhanced (reduced) with more (less) oxygen supply to the bottom (central) layer since the 2000s. This paper presents a new projection that allows a three-layered deep structure, which retains bottom water, at least until 2040, contrasting previous results. This projection considers recent increase of slope convections mainly due to the salt supply via air-sea freshwater exchange and sea ice formation and decrease of open-ocean convections evidenced by reduced mixed layer depth in the northern East Sea, resulting in more bottom water and less central water formations. Such vigorous changes in water formation and ventilation provide certain implications on future climate changes.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a navigation program for patients with thyroid cancer. The navigation program was developed following an analysis of the unmet needs of patients who underwent surgery for thyroid cancer. Ninety-nine patients in the control group received usual care, and 95 in the navigation group were managed with a navigation program during the perioperative period. The effectiveness of the navigation program was assessed by administering a questionnaire to both groups. Overall satisfaction scores were significantly higher in the navigation than in the control group (p = .025), as were satisfaction scores on the continuity of information (p < .001), the continuity of management (p = .002), the continuity of relationships with healthcare providers (p<.001), and patient empowerment (p < .001). The newly developed navigation program for patients with thyroid cancer was effective in raising satisfaction levels and in actively managing the disease during the perioperative period.

Abstract
PURPOSE Differing lifestyle, nutritional, and genetic factors may lead to a differing stiffness index (SI) determined by quantitative ultrasound in elderly men and women. The purpose of this study was to determine SI and the gender-specific factors associated with low SI in a Korean elderly cohort. METHODS This was a cross-sectional descriptive study identifying the gender-specific factors related to SI in 252 men and women aged 65 years and greater from local senior centers in Seoul, Korea between January and February 2009. RESULTS The mean SI of elderly men was significantly higher than that of the women's. A multiple regression analysis reveals that age, nutritional status, and physical activity were predictive factors of lower SI in men, whereas age, alcohol consumption, educational level, and genetic polymorphism were predictive factors for elderly women. CONCLUSIONS Low SI was common in both elderly men and women. We found gender differences in factors linked to low SI. In multiple regression analysis, nutritional status and physical activity were more important factors in men, whereas alcohol consumption, educational level, and genetic polymorphism were significant factors predicting low SI in women. Gender-specific modifiable risk factors associated with low SI should be considered when developing osteoporosis prevention programs for the elderly.

Abstract
Metabolic diseases and cardiovascular disease (CVD), the incidence of which is currently increasing in Korea, can be managed well with dietary education and modification. However, it has yet to be established whether nurses have sufficient knowledge to impart appropriate nutritional counseling to patients with these diseases. Our study involved 506 nurses working at Asan Medical Center, Samsung Medical Center, and Seoul National University Hospital between March and May, 2006. The questionnaire was comprised of 42 diet-related questions pertaining to diabetes, obesity, and CVD. Nurses' correct-response rate for overall nutritional knowledge was worse than reported in Western countries (58.4%), and particularly so with regard to obesity and CVD. Although many nurses were aware of the therapeutic aspects of nutrients in relation to CVD, most of them had limited knowledge about low-cholesterol diets and sources of water-soluble fiber, fatty acids and the specific food items that prevent CVD. Our results suggest that there is an urgent need to update the contents of nutrition education for nurses to reflect the current changes in the Korean diet and the increasing incidence of metabolic diseases and CVD.

Abstract
Nerve growth factor (NGF) can augment transmitter release in sensory neurons by acutely sensitizing sensory neurons and by increasing the expression of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) over time. The current study examined the intracellular signaling pathways that mediate these two temporally distinct effects of NGF to augment CGRP release from sensory neurons. Growing sensory neurons in 30 or 100 ng/mL of NGF for 7 days increases CGRP content and this increase augments the amount of CGRP that is released by high extracellular potassium. Overexpressing a dominant negative Ras, Ras(17N) or treatment with a farnesyltransferase inhibitor attenuates the NGF-induced increase in CGRP content. Conversely, overexpressing a constitutively active Ras augments the NGF-induced increase in content of CGRP. Inhibiting mitogen activated protein kinase (MEK) activity also blocks the ability of NGF to increase CGRP expression. In contrast to the ability of chronic NGF to increase peptide content, acute exposure of sensory neurons to 100 ng/mL NGF augments capsaicin-evoked release of CGRP without affecting the content of CGRP. This sensitizing action of NGF is not affected by inhibiting Ras, MEK, or PI3 kinases. In contrast, the NGF-induced increase in capsaicin-evoked release of CGRP is blocked by the protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor, BIM and the Src family kinases inhibitor, PP2. These data demonstrate that different signaling pathways mediate the alterations in expression of CGRP by chronic NGF and the acute actions of the neurotrophin to augment capsaicin-evoked release of CGRP in the absence of a change in the content of the peptide.

Abstract
The zinc-finger protein A20 has crucial physiological functions as a dual inhibitor of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activation and apoptosis in tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor 1 signaling pathway. Although the molecular basis for the anti-NF-κB function of A20 has been well elucidated, the anti-apoptotic function of A20 is largely unknown. Here, we report a novel mechanism underlying the anti-apoptotic function of A20: A20 blocks TNF-induced apoptosis through suppression of c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) by targeting apoptosis signal-regulating kinase1 (ASK1). First, the ectopic expression of A20 drastically inhibits TNF-induced JNK activation and apoptosis in multiple cell types including those deficient of NF-κB activation. Unexpectedly, the blunting effect of A20 on TNF-induced JNK activation is not mediated by affecting the TNFR1 signaling complex formation. Instead, A20 interacts with ASK1, an important MAPKK kinase in the JNK signaling cascade. More importantly, overexpression of wild-type A20, but not of mutant A20 (ZnF4; C624A, C627A), promotes degradation of the ASK1 through the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Taken together, the results from this study reveal a novel anti-apoptotic mechanism of A20 in TNF signaling pathway: A20 binds to ASK1 and mediates ASK1 degradation, leading to suppression of JNK activation and eventually blockage of apoptosis.

Abstract
Background This study was conducted to evaluate the factors affecting medication adherence in geriatric diabetic patients treated at private clinics and tertiary hospitals. We compared the factors affecting medication adherence between these two patient groups. Methods We included 108 diabetic patients older than 65 years treated at one tertiary hospital and 157 patients older than 65 years treated at two private clinics. We conducted an interview survey based on the Health Belief Model, and used a questionnaire that included the self-efficacy variable. For the medication adherence, Morisky's self-report was used. Results The medication adherence based on Morisky's self-report was significantly higher in tertiary hospital patients (61.1%) compared to private clinic patients (43.2%) (P < 0.01). The results showed that drug storage and self-efficacy were factors affecting adherence to medication in tertiary hospital patients (P < 0.05). The adherence was high in cases of proper drug storage (odds ratio [OR], 5.401) and in cases with high self-efficacy (OR, 13.114). In private clinic patients, financial level (P < 0.05), recognition of the seriousness of diabetes complications (P < 0.05) and self-efficacy (P < 0.01) were associated with medication adherence. The medication adherence was significantly lower in patients whose financial state were moderate than those with lower (OR, 0.410), and medication adherence was significantly higher in patients who had higher perceived severity (OR, 2.936) and in patients with higher self-efficacy (OR, 4.040). Conclusion Different strategies should be used to increase medication adherence in geriatric diabetic patients, depending on institutions whether they are treated.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The numbers of older hemodialysis patients (OHPs) are increasing very rapidly worldwide, but few studies have focused on the compliance of OHPs. This study compared the compliance with, and the knowledge of, dietary restriction regimens between OHPs and younger hemodialysis patients (YHPs). Mortality was also compared between these two groups. PATIENTS AND SETTING A total of 160 patients who were registered at the Asan Medical Center (Seoul, Korea) participated in the study, 64 of whom were classified as OHPs (age >or=65 years), and 96 as YHPs (age <65 years). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Data were collected between September 2003 and February 2004. General characteristics and dietary knowledge of potassium, phosphorus, and sodium and fluid restrictions were assessed by personal interview. Dietary compliance was determined by measuring serum levels of these nutrients and interdialytic weight gain. Subjective global assessments were used to evaluate nutritional status. Both OHPs and YHPs were followed until May 2007 for mortality analysis. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, Student's t test, chi(2) test, and Spearman correlation using the SPSS statistical package (SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL). RESULTS The OHPs had a lower appetite, lower physical activity, and lower educational level compared with the YHPs. Dietary compliance with phosphorus restriction and with sodium and fluid restriction was higher in the OHPs than in the YHPs (P < .01 and P < .05, respectively), whereas compliance with potassium restriction did not differ between groups. The knowledge scores concerning potassium (P < .05) and phosphorus (P < .01) restriction diets were lower in OHPs than in YHPs, whereas no differences were found for knowledge scores concerning sodium and fluid restriction diets. Mortality was higher in the OHPs than in the YHPs (P < .001). The OHPs with higher mortality had higher dietary compliance with sodium and fluid restriction (r = 0.248, P < .05), and lower nutritional status (r = -0.342, P < .05). CONCLUSIONS The OHPs were generally less knowledgeable and more compliant, and had a lower appetite and a higher mortality than the YHPs. Therefore, the current application of the same dietary education to both OHPs and YHPs may be problematic. Instead, developing age-specific strategies to increase dietary knowledge and nutritional intake is urgently needed to increase the survival rate of Korean hemodialysis patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Resveratrol is a naturally occurring polyphenol, which possesses chemotherapeutic potential through its ability to trigger apoptosis. The objective of this study was to investigate the major determinant for the apoptotic cell death induction by resveratrol in fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) derived from patients with RA. METHODS The effect of resveratrol on apoptotic cell death was quantified in a population of subG1 in RA FLS by flow cytometry. The underlying signalling mechanism for apoptotic death was examined by analysing mitochondrial membrane potential, activation of the caspase cascade and translocation of Bid. RESULTS We show that activation of caspase-8 is essential for triggering resveratrol-induced apoptotic signalling via the involvement of the mitochondrial pathway in RA FLS. Our findings also suggest that this enhanced apoptosis caused by resveratrol occurred in RA FLS irrespective of p53 status. Exposure to resveratrol caused extensive apoptotic cell death, along with a caspase-dependent (activation of caspase-9 and -3, poly ADPribose polymerase (PARP) cleavage and mitochondrial cytochrome c release) or caspase-independent [translocation of apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF) to the nucleus] signalling pathway. Analysis of upstream signalling events affected by resveratrol revealed that the activated caspase-8 triggered mitochondrial apoptotic events by inducing Bid cleavage without any alteration in the levels of Bax, Bcl-xL or Bcl2. The caspase-8 inhibitor or over-expression of crmA abrogated cell death induced by resveratrol and prevented processing of the downstream cascade. CONCLUSION The results suggest that resveratrol causes activation of caspase-8, which in turn results in modulation of mitochondrial apoptotic machinery to promote apoptosis of RA FLS.

Abstract
Background Factors affecting the quality of life (QOL) may be different between young and old stroke patients. However, these issues have not yet been properly investigated. Methods We identified 170 young-onset stroke patients (onset between 15 and 45 years of age) who were admitted to the Asan Medical Center. Three hundred and forty follow-up period matched, old-onset stroke patients (onset >45 years of age) were chosen as a control group. A follow-up interview was performed 1~5 years after the onset of stroke in 96 young patients and 160 old patients. With the use of standardized questionnaire, we assessed physical disabilities, activity of daily living (Barthel Index Score, modified Rankin scale), the presence of depression (using DSM IV criteria and Beck Depression Inventory) and socio-economic/job status. The QOL was assessed using the Stroke Specific QOL developed by Williams et al. Results The QOL scores were significantly higher in young patients than in old ones. Univariate analysis showed that factors related to low QOL included unemployment, motor impairment, aphasia, dysarthria, dysaphagia and severe modified Rankin score in young patients while poor economic status, unemployment, supratentorial (vs. infratentorial) stroke, anterior (vs. posterior) circulation stroke, the presence of diabetes mellitus, motor impairment, aphasia, dysarthria, dysphagia, visual field defect, severe modified Rankin score, the presence of post-stroke seizures and depression were related to the low QOL in old patients. Cigarette smoking (in old patients) and alcohol drinking (in both young and old patients) were related to high QOL. Multiple regression analysis showed that modified Rankin score was the most important factor explaining low QOL in both groups, while other important factors included depression, visual field defect and anterior circulation stroke in old patients, and the motor dysfunction and dysarthria in young patients. Conclusions We conclude that aside from modified Rankin scale, factors affecting the quality of life are different between these two groups. Recognition of these differences may allow us to develop different strategies to improve the quality of life in stroke patients.

Abstract
Agmatine is a primary amine formed by the decarboxylation of L-arginine synthesized in mammalian brain. In this study, we investigated the neuroprotective effect of agmatine on ischemic and ischemia-like insults. Primary cortical neuronal cultures were subjected to oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD), a model of ischemia-like injury, and treated with agmatine before or at the start of OGD, or upon reperfusion. Neuronal death was reduced when agmatine was present during OGD, and this protection was associated with a reduction of nitric oxide (NO) and neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), but not inducible NOS (iNOS). Protection by agmatine was also studied at the in vivo level using a model of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in mice. Mice were subjected to 2 h MCAO. Agmatine was administered either 30 min before ischemia, at the start of MCAO, at the start of reperfusion, or 2 or 5 h into reperfusion. Agmatine markedly reduced infarct area in all treatment groups except when treatment was delayed 5 h. The number of nNOS immunopositive cells was correlated with neuroprotection. Interestingly, immunoreactivity for iNOS was reduced only when agmatine was administered before and at the onset of MCAO. Our study suggests that agmatine may be a novel therapeutic strategy to reduce cerebral ischemic injury, and may act by inhibiting the detrimental effects of nNOS.

Abstract
This study investigated the neuroprotective effects of dietary supplementation of fish oil on both brain infarction and the activities of antioxidant enzymes. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (4-weeks old) were divided into two groups and received either a regular diet (RD) or a fish-oil-supplemented diet (FOD) for 6 weeks prior to middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion. The infarction volume of the brain was calculated using image analysis after staining. Antioxidant enzymes were measured before ischemia (BI), after 2 h of ischemia (AI) and after 24 h (24hR), 48 h (48hR) and after 7 days (7dR) of reperfusion. The infarction volume of the brain was significantly smaller in the FOD group than in the RD group after 24 h of reperfusion (p<0.05). Before ischemia, the levels of lipid peroxide and the glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity were higher in the FOD group than in the RD group. During reperfusion, the catalase (CAT) activity in the FOD group remained at the preischemia level until after 48 h of reperfusion, while those in the RD group did not. The Mn-superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and GPx activity were higher in the FOD group than in the RD group only after 2 h of ischemia. In the fatty acid analysis, the ratio of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) were higher in the FOD group than in the RD group (p<0.05). Our results demonstrate that supplementing the diet with fish oil could decrease the cerebral infarction volume following ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) partly by working directly as an antioxidant and partly by modulating antioxidant enzyme activities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate the perceptions of epilepsy in Seoul, South Korea, a country where social stigma toward epilepsy is still pronounced. METHODS We randomly selected 1000 persons living in Seoul and performed telephone interviews regarding public awareness, knowledge, and attitudes toward epilepsy. RESULTS Among 1000 respondents, the 92% who had read or heard about epilepsy became the subjects of the study. Word of mouth was most often referenced as a source of knowledge (78%). Forty-seven percentage believed that epilepsy is inheritable, whereas 5% thought that epilepsy is a mental illness. Marriage of their children to an epileptic person, childbearing by women with epilepsy, and employing a person with epilepsy were opposed by more than 50% of respondents. The reasons for the negative attitudes were that epilepsy was hereditary and untreatable (P < 0.05, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed that there still remains negative attitudes regarding the marriage, childbearing, and employment of persons with epilepsy, which may stem from misconceptions about the cause and treatability of epilepsy, possibly due in part to the influence of herbal medicine, and South Korea's ethnic homogeneity. Public health education either through media or school health education is urgently needed to improve knowledge about, and attitudes toward epilepsy.

Abstract
This study was conducted to examine the effects of dietary garlic powder at the different levels on preneoplastic foci formation and glutathione (GSH)-dependent detoxifying enzyme activities in rat hepatocarcinogenesis. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed with garlic powder supplemented diets (0, 0.5, 2.0 or 5.0%) for 11 weeks, and induced hepatocarcinogenesis by diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and two-thirds partial hepatectomy in medium-term bioassay system. The 2.0 and 5.0% garlic powder diets suppressed the formation of placental GSH S-transferase positive (GST-P(+)) foci in number (49.7 and 63.1% of DEN-treated control group, respectively) and area (44.2 and 63.9% of DEN-treated control group, respectively). Total GSH content in 2.0% garlic powder diet group was 1.2 fold higher than that in DEN-treated control group. GSH S-transferase activity of 2.0% garlic powder diet group was lower than that in DEN-treated control group, and GSH peroxidase (GPx) activity was significantly increased by garlic powder diets (83 and 164% of DEN-treated control group, respectively). GSH reductase activity, however, did not show a noticeable difference among groups. Therefore, the suppression of GST-P(+) foci formation by garlic powder diets could be partly affected by the increase of total GSH content and GPx activity.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with (+)-catechin on cutaneous antioxidant enzymes and the skin damage caused by UVB irradiation. METHODS BALB/c mice were divided into three groups. Each group was fed a regular diet (RD) or a 2% catechin-supplemented diet for either 2 weeks (2CSD) or 4 weeks (4CSD) ad libitum prior to UVB irradiation. Skin was removed for the antioxidant enzyme assay, hematoxylin and eosin staining, and the TEM analysis before and at various time points after UVB (200 mJ/cm2) irradiation. RESULTS Before UVB irradiation, the superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities of the 2CSD and the 4CSD groups were found to be lower than those of the RD group, whereas the glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity of the 4CSD group was higher than those of the RD and the 2CSD groups (P<0.05). The SOD and CAT activities of the RD group decreased after UVB irradiation, while those of the 2CSD and the 4CSD groups increased immediately after irradiation and then decreased (P<0.05). Immediately after UVB irradiation, the GPx activities of the 4CSD and the 2CSD groups increased, but that of the RD group decreased. The GPx activity of all three groups showed a tendency to return to pre-UVB irradiation levels with time. Light microscopic findings of the RD group showed epidermal thinning and apoptotic cells at 24 h after UVB irradiation and mostly necrotic cells at 48 h, whereas only moderate thickening of the epidermis was observed in the 2CSD group at 48 h after irradiation. An electron microscopic examination produced similar findings. At 48 h after irradiation, nearly all epidermal cells seemed to be damaged in the RD group as compared to the 2CSD group. CONCLUSION These results demonstrate that dietary supplementation with (+)-catechin could protect epidermal cells against UVB-induced damage by modulating antioxidant enzyme activities.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of dietary garlic powder on diethylnitrosamine (DEN)- induced hepatocarcinogenesis and cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes in weaning male Sprague-Dawley rats by using the medium-term bioassay system of Ito et al. The rats were fed diets that contained 0, 0.5, 2.0 or 5.0% garlic powder for 8 weeks, beginning the diets with the intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of DEN. The areas of placental glutathione S-transferase (GST-P) positive foci, an effective marker for DEN-initiated lesions, were significantly decreased in the rats that were fed garlic powder diets; the numbers were significantly decreased only in the 2.0 and 5.0% garlic-powder diets. The p-Nitrophenol hydroxylase (PNPH) activities and protein levels of CYP 2E1 in the hepatic microsomes of the rats that were fed the 2.0 and 5.0% garlic powder diet were much lower than those of the basal-diet groups. Pentoxyresorufin O-dealkylase (PROD) activity and CYP 2B1 protein level were not influenced by the garlic-powder diets and carcinogen treatment. Therefore, the suppression of CYP 2E1 by garlic in the diet might influence the formation of preneoplastic foci during hepatocarcinogenesis in rats that are initiated with DEN.

Abstract
This paper proposes a new technique for measuring the gas flow velocity averaged along the finite length of a pipe as well as over its cross-sectional area. Unlike the conventional gas flowmeters, the proposed technique exploits the one-dimensional plane waves that propagate uniformly across the pipe cross-sectional area. When a fluid flows along the pipe, the plane waves are superposed with the flow field such that the positive-going and negative-going plane wave components undergo the change of their wave numbers. Such wave number variation due to the mean flow velocity has provided a major motivation for developing a new way of measuring the mean flow velocity in the pipe, which is referred to as the acoustic flowmeter. To examine the feasibility of the developed flow velocity measurement method, including its theoretical backgrounds, experimental setups are illustrated in this paper. Detailed experimental data for the flow velocity range of 2-27 m/s reveal the linearity of the proposed acoustic flowmeter and its salient environmental robustness for the different acoustic pressure patterns in the pipe and, furthermore, for different velocity profiles over the pipe cross-section area.

Abstract
Hydrogen peroxide is considered to be a dose- and time-dependent mediator in apoptotic and necrotic death. In this study, we examined the signaling of the E6 and E7 proteins with respect to apoptosis or necrosis after H2O2 injury using an in vitro model with overexpressed E6 or E7 genes. For this purpose, the E6 and E7 gene expressing astrocytes were exposed to 10 micromole and 200 micromole H2O2 solutions. Twenty- four hours after treatment with the lower dosage(10 micromole H2O2), control, E6-expressing cells suffered about 45% injury and LXSN-expressing cells decreased by 67% as assessed by LDH release. However, E7-expressing cells showed less injury, resulting in 20-30% of LDH release. Astrocytes expressing E6, E7, LXSN and mock-infected cells showed a typical apoptotic death pattern on the DNA gel after treatment with a low-dose of H2O2 (10 micromole), however they died from necrotic death after a high-dose (200 micromole) H2O2. Overexpression of HPV-E7 genes protected the cells from apoptotic death after a low-dose of H2O2 and from necrotic death after a high-dose of H2O2, while the overexpression of E6 genes from the necrotic death. E7 expressing astrocytes showed higher catalase activity and the levels of E2F protein surged more than 100-folds compared with the control astrocytes. We believe that the activity of E7 protein to protect astrocytes from H2O2 injury was at least partly due to increased catalase, a scavenger protein.

Abstract
Animal models for human chronic pain syndromes have been developed and widely used for pain research. One of these neuropathic pain models by Kim and Chung (1992) has many advantages for operation and pain elicitation. In this neuropathic model we have examined the c-fos protein, substance P, CGRP immunoreactivity in dorsal root ganglia and dorsal horn. 50 Sprague-Dawley rats were used for this study. L5 and L6 spinal nerves were ligated tightly to produce the neuropathic pain model. After 2, 4, 8, 16, and 24 hours and 1 week of surgery, rats were anesthetized and sacrificed by perfusion. After confirmation of the roots transected by the surgery, the L5 and L6 dorsal root ganglions and spinal cord were removed and processed for immunohistochemistry. All tissue sections were immunohistochemically stained for substance P, CGRP and c-fos using the peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) method. The number of immunostained substance P and CGRP dorsal root ganglion cells and c-fos immunoreactive dorsal horn cells were counted and analyzed statistically with Mann-Whitney U test. The results are as follows. The number of c-fos protein immunoreactive neurons in the superficial layer of dorsal horn were increased markedly 2 hours after operation, and gradually decreased to normal level 1 week after operation. The number of c-fos protein immunoreactive neurons in the deep layer of the dorsal horn gradually increased to a peak 24 hours after operation, then decreased to the normal level 1 week after operation. The number of substance P and CGRP immunoreactive L5 and L6 dorsal root ganglion neurons were decreased markedly 1 week after the pain model operation. In conclusion, after neuropathic pain model operation, c-fos proteins were immediately expressed in the superficial layer of spinal dorsal horn, thereafter c-fos proteins in the deep layer of spinal dorsal horn were expressed. CGRP and substance P immunoreactive neurons in DRG were decreased markedly 1 week after neuropathic pain model operation. These decrements do not coincide with the other chronic pain models, which show great increases in these pain transmitting substances. Therefore, the relationship between pain and c-fos, SP and CGRP should be investigated further.

Abstract
Protein tyrosine phosphorylation is regulated by protein tyrosine kinase and protein tyrosine phosphatase activities. These two counteracting proteins are implicated in cell growth and transformation. Using polymerase chain reaction with degenerate primers, we have identified a novel mouse protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP). This cDNA contains a single open reading frame of the predicted 926 amino acids. Those predicted amino acids showed significant identity with human megakaryocyte protein-tyrosine phosphatase by 91% in nucleotide sequences and 94% in amino acid sequences. We have identified that expression of this PTP is highly enriched in the testis in mouse and human and has been termed here as a 'testis-enriched phosphatase' (TEP). Northern analysis detected two mRNA species of 3.7 and 3.2kb for this PTP in mouse testis and the expression of TEP is regulated during development. The recombinant phosphatase domain possesses protein tyrosine phosphatase activity when expressed in Escherichia coli. Immunohistochemical analysis of the cellular localization of TEP on mouse testis sections showed that this PTP is specifically expressed in spermatocytes and spermatids within seminiferous tubules, suggesting an important role in spermatogenesis.

Abstract
To construct the PAC and cosmid contig map spanning the HOXA cluster on human chromosome 7, we used 9 DNA markers (D7S2243, D7S3010, HOXA1, EVX1, 750, pBH8, p60, p8.0, and HOXA11), among which the final 4 were generated in this study by shotgun cloning strategy. From the libraries, 5 PAC and 35 cosmid clones were screened and as a result, an overlapping continuous array of cosmid and PAC clones covering the genomic region (about 200 kb) spanning the entire cluster were constructed. The isolated cosmids contained several consecutive HOX genes of regional group, probably sharing the regulatory processes such as alternative splicing or polyadenylation, and thus could be used as useful materials for elucidating the molecular mechanism of HOX gene expression in the future.

Abstract
Succinic semialdehyde reductase (SSR) that catalyzes the reduction of succinic semialdehyde (SSA) to gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) has been identified as one of the NADPH-dependent aldehyde reductases. Reduction of SSA to GHB strongly supports the proposal that GHB biosynthesis may be an important step in the GABA shunt. It is pharmacologically significant in anesthesia, evoking the state of sleep, and an increase in brain dopamine level. Monoclonal antibodies against bovine brain succinic semialdehyde reductase were produced. Using the anti-succinic semialdehyde reductase antibodies, we investigated the distribution of brain succinic semialdehyde reductase in rat brain. The brain tissues were sectioned with a basis on the rat brain atlas of Paxinos and were stained by the immunoperoxidase staining method using monoclonal antibodies. In the section of the frontal lobe, immunoreactive cells were observed in the lateral septal area, the ventral pallidum, which belongs to the substantia innominata. We could observe immunoreactive cells in the reticular thalamic nucleus, which is closely related with 'sleeping', the basal nuclei of Meynert, which is associated with Alzheimer's disease, and hypothalamic nuclei. Immunoreactive cells were also shown in raphe nuclei or the reticular formation of the midbrain, cerebellum, and inferior olivary nuclei of the medulla oblongata. Succinic semialdehyde reductase-immunoreactive cells were distributed extensively in rat brain, especially immunoreactive cells were strongly observed in the areas associated with the limbic system and reticular formation.

Abstract
Peripheral nerve injury often induces sympathetic nerve fiber sprouting in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) and injured nerve. Presently, the underlying mechanism and functional significance of the sprouting are unknown. This study was performed to see whether the degree of the sprouting in the DRG was a function of the distance between the DRG and injury site. To this aim, we compared two groups of rats with respect to the sympathetic nerve fibers sprouting in the S1-3 DRG; one group was subjected to unilateral inferior and superior caudal trunk transections at the level between the S3 and S4 spinal nerves (S34 group) and the other group at the levels between the S1 and S2, between S2 and S3 and between S3 and S4 spinal nerves (S123 group). The transections in both groups equally eliminated the inputs from the tail to the S1-3 DRG, but the distance from the S1/S2 DRG to the injury site was different between the two groups. Immunohistochemical staining with tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) antibody of the S1-3 DRG removed from rats a week after the injury revealed that the degree of penetration of TH-positive fibers into the S1 and S2 DRG was much more extensive in the S123 group than in the S34 group, whereas that into the S3 DRG was not significantly different between the two groups. These results suggest that the extent of the sympathetic nerve fiber sprouting in the DRG following peripheral nerve injury is inversely related to the distance between the DRG and injury site.

Abstract
Parpal and Maccoby demonstrated that responsive maternal play increases children's compliance. They suggested that positive mood induction might be one mechanism mediating this effect. Study 1 tested the hypothesis that a responsive maternal play procedure would indeed induce a positive mood. 32 4-year-olds and their mothers participated. Half of the mothers were trained in a responsive play technique prior to a laboratory play session; half of them were not trained. Postplay self-reports of mood indicated that responsive play increased positive mood but did not affect arousal levels. Study 2 tested the hypothesis that experimentally induced positive mood increases compliance in the types of tasks reported in the Parpal and Maccoby's research. 24 4-year-olds were randomly assigned to either a positive or negative mood induction and then tested for response to maternal compliance demands. Children induced into positive moods complied more and complied with shorter latencies than children induced into negative moods. The fact that maternal responsiveness induces a positive mood points to a mechanism that may be significant in both attachment and socialization beyond infancy.

Abstract
Attachment theory proposes that the quality of the mother-child tie predicts the quality of a child's other close relationships. The purpose of this study was to test whether security of attachment to mother is related to the quality of a preschooler's best friendships. 33 4-year-old and their best friends participated (mean age = 46 months). Attachment Q-set data were collected to score security of mother-child attachment. Security data were used to classify the friend pairs as secure-secure or secure-insecure. Best friend dyads were observed for a 1-hour free-play session. Each pair's behavior was described with the Dyadic Relationships Q-set, a measure designed to describe the behavior of a pair of children. Secure-secure pairs were more harmonious, less controlling, more responsive, and happier than secure-insecure pairs. The results are related to previous work on attachment and social competence.

Abstract
We report the purification of a CaATPase of high specific activity from Paramecium tetraurelia. The enzyme is preferentially released into solution upon deciliation of cells by a Ca2+ shock procedure. Purification by ion exchange and gel filtration chromatography yields major peptides of 68 and 53 kDa and a minor peptide of 58 kDa, as determined by electrophoresis on sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gels. These three peptides yield similar proteolytic peptide maps. Rabbit antisera to the purified enzyme inhibit enzyme activity and specifically label 68- and 53-kDa bands on nitrocellulose blots of the deciliation supernatant from which the enzyme is isolated. Concanavalin A-Sepharose precipitates about 60% of ATPase activity; only the 53-kDa band binds concanavalin A on nitrocellulose blots. The purified enzyme has a specific activity of 620 +/- 70 mumol/min/mg with ATP as substrate in the presence of Ca2+, which is required for enzyme activity. As substrates, ATP and GTP are strongly preferred to UTP and CTP. The Km for ATP in the presence of 3 mM Ca2+ is approximately 20 microM. Enzyme activity is strongly inhibited by the calmodulin antagonists trifluoperazine, fluphenazine, W7, and calmidazolium. However, calmodulin is not associated with the purified enzyme, based on the enzyme's inability to bind anti-calmodulin antibodies or to stimulate brain phosphodiesterase. The intracellular origin of this ATPase, its possible function, and its relationship to several other ATPases of Paramecium are discussed.

Abstract
The objective of this study is to explain spatial variations in cardiovascular mortality by sex. Recognizing the interdependence of the various dimensions of the 'ecological complex', it is maintained that spatial variations in cardiovascular mortality by sex and the sex differentials in cardiovascular mortality are the consequences of environmental, sustenance organization, health technology, and demographic factors. The test of the model is based on U.S. county level cardiovascular mortality data for ages 25-65 for the period 1970-1980. The most distinctive feature of the results is that environment has the greatest impact on sex differentials in cardiovascular mortality followed by sustenance organization. In this regard, socioeconomic status is shown to be the single most important variable in explaining cardiovascular mortality rates for both sexes in most community types. The effect of health technology is not significant, and increased availability of health manpower and facilities are often found in conjunction with higher rates of cardiovascular mortality for both sexes. The results of this study confirm the importance of programs directed toward altering the basic environment and sustenance organization structures of communities rather than other ecological components such as health technology.
