Abstract
Grain mixes varying in proportions of wheat grain, barley grain, canola meal and corn grain were fed to grazing dairy cows in early lactation to determine the contribution of canola meal and corn grain to milk yield, body weight (BW), body condition score (BCS), eating behavior and blood serum metabolite concentrations. The experiment used 80 multiparous, seasonally calving Holstein-Friesian dairy cows during the first 100 d of lactation, the treatment period, and over the subsequent carryover period of 100 d, during which all cows were fed a common diet. Cows were divided into 4 cohorts (blocks) based on calving date and within each cohort, 5 cows were randomly allocated to each of the 4 treatments. Dietary treatments included disc milled grain mixes comprising (on a dry matter (DM) basis) 1) a control treatment of wheat (25%) and barley (75%); 2) wheat (25%), barley (50%) and canola meal (25%); 3) wheat (25%), barley (50%) and corn (25%), and 4) wheat (25%), barley (25%), canola meal (25%), and corn (25%). Treatment diets were introduced at 19 d in milk (DIM) ± 4.7 d which included a 7-d adaptation period and were applied up until 100 DIM. Each grain mix was fed at 9 kg DM/cow per d, offered twice daily, in equal proportions in the parlor at milking times. In addition to the grain mix, all cows grazed perennial ryegrass pasture at a daily allowance of approximately 35 kg DM/cow per d (measured to ground level). Results were analyzed in terms of corn and canola presence or absence in the diet. Including canola meal in grain mixes increased grain intake and pasture intake by 0.6 and 2.1 kg DM/cow per d, respectively, resulting in an increased milk yield of 2.6 kg/cow per d during the first 100 d of lactation. Including canola meal also increased yields of milk fat and protein, and concentrations of milk fat, as well as increasing mean BW and BCS over the 100 d. The inclusion of canola meal in the grain mixes also resulted in greater blood serum β-hydroxybutyrate and urea concentrations, compared with feeding grain mixes that did not contain canola meal. The inclusion of corn grain provided no milk production benefits and did not change BW, BCS or any feeding behavior variables. There were no carryover effects on milk production from either canola meal or corn grain after the treatment period. In summary, the results demonstrate that the provision of canola meal in grain mixes can improve milk production and increase mean BCS. Further, there are no benefits to milk yield when a proportion of barley is substituted for corn, in a wheat and barley grain mix fed to grazing dairy cows in early lactation. However, these results are dependent on the level of inclusion and the feeding system employed.

Abstract
Dry matter intake (DMI) is a primary determinant of milk production in grazing dairy cows and an ability to measure the DMI of individual cows would allow herd managers to formulate supplementary rations that consider the amount of nutrients ingested from grass. The 2 related aims of this experiment were to define the mean number of swallowed boli and mass of the swallowed boli in Holstein-Friesian dairy cattle offered a variety of forages commonly fed in the dairy industry of southeastern Australia, and to evaluate 2 indirect methods for counting the number of swallows. Twelve ruminally-fistulated, lactating Holstein-Friesian cows were randomly assigned to 3 replicated 4 × 4 Latin square designs and offered 4 forages: fresh chicory (FC), fresh perennial ryegrass (RP), alfalfa hay (AH), and perennial ryegrass silage (RS). The experiment was conducted over 28 d with each of 4 periods consisting of 7 d with 3 d of measurement. Forage diets were offered to individual cows following the partial evacuation of the rumen. The first 20 min after forage was offered constituted the measurement period, during which all swallowed boli were manually captured by samplers who placed their hand through the ruminal fistula and over the cardia entrance of the rumen of each cow. Concurrently, microphones and video cameras were used for the indirect measurement of swallows. The average swallowed bolus mass overall was 17.4 g dry matter (DM) per bolus with the lowest mass observed in cows offered FC (8.9 g DM/bolus), followed by RP (14.9 g DM/bolus), compared with cows offered AH (23.6 g DM/bolus) and RS (22.3 g DM/bolus). The swallowing rate was greater in cows offered FC (78 swallows/20 min) than in cows offered RP, AH, and RS (62.3 swallows/20 min). The audio recording method showed greater concordance (Lin's concordance correlation coefficient = 0.90) with the physical capturing of the boli through the rumen, than the video recording method did (Lin's concordance correlation coefficient = 0.54). It is concluded that the mass of the swallowed boli is related to forage type and that using a microphone attached to the cow's forehead can provide an accurate measure of the number of swallows when verified against the actual number of swallows counted by manual interception of the boli at the rumen cardia.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the safety and accuracy of three dry needling locations in the piriformis muscle using human donors. DESIGN Observational dissection study of embalmed human donors. METHODS A licensed physical therapist of 17 years clinical experience and 5 years teaching dry needling placed three needles in a medial, midpoint, and lateral location of 14 piriformis muscles of seven embalmed human donors. Block dissection allowed for observation of tissues the needles traversed and recording of the structures that the needles pierced. RESULTS The lateral needle pierced piriformis in 3/14 trials, and contacted sciatic nerve in 0/14 trials. The medial needle pierced both piriformis and sciatic nerve in 11/14 trials. The midpoint needle pierced the piriformis in 11/14 trials, and contacted sciatic nerve in 3/14 trials. Fisher's Exact test (p < 0.001) found a nonrandom association between dry needle placement, and dry needle contact. CONCLUSIONS When dry needling the piriformis, a lateral approach can avoid the sciatic nerve, but cannot accurately pierce the piriformis tendon. Furthermore, while a midpoint and medial approach finds the piriformis muscle with the same accuracy, the midpoint location avoided the sciatic nerve more often.

Abstract
In pasture-based dairy systems, feeding a complex concentrate mix in the parlor during milking that contains cereal grains and protein supplements has been shown to have milk production advantages over feeding straight cereal grain. This experiment had the aim of testing whether further milk production advantages could be elicited by adjusting the composition of the concentrate mix in an attempt to match the expected nutrient intake from pasture during late spring. The experiment used 96 lactating dairy cows, grazing perennial ryegrass pasture offered at a target allowance of 30 kg of dry matter/cow per day (to ground level) during late spring (mid October to November) in southeastern Australia. Cows were allocated into 3 replicates of 4 treatment groups, with 24 cows in each treatment. Each treatment group was offered 1 of 4 dietary treatments in the parlor at milking: control consisting of crushed wheat and barley grains; formulated grain mix (FGM) consisting of crushed wheat, barley, and corn grains and canola meal; designer grain mix 1 (DGM1) consisting of the same ingredients as the FGM grain mix but formulated using the CPM Dairy nutrition model to take into account the expected nutrient intake from pasture; and designer grain mix 2 (DGM2) consisting of the same ingredients as DGM1 but with canola meal replaced by urea and a fat supplement (Megalac, Volac Wilmar, Gresik, Indonesia). Concentrate mixes were offered at 8.0 kg of dry matter/cow per day, except for DGM2 cows, which were offered 7.5 kg of dry matter/cow per day. The experiment ran for a total of 28 d; after a 14-d adaptation period, nutrient intake, milk production, and body weight were measured over a 14-d measurement period. Milk yield (kg) of cows fed the FGM diet was greater than that of the control cows but was not different from that of the DGM1 and DGM2 cows. However, milk fat and protein yields (kg) were greater for cows fed the FGM diet than for all other diets. There was no difference in estimated daily pasture or total dry matter intakes between the 4 treatment groups, despite cows fed the DGM2 treatment consuming less of the concentrate mix (average 6.5 kg of dry matter/cow per day when offered 7.5 kg of dry matter/cow per day). This research has demonstrated the potential for using a nutrition model to take into account the expected nutrient intake from pasture to formulate a concentrate mix (DGM1) to achieve similar milk yields, but also highlighted the need for near real-time analyses of the pasture to be grazed so as to also capture benefits in terms of milk fat and protein yield.

Abstract
Context
The Australian dairy industry is characterised by pasture-based feeding systems, where grazed pasture is commonly supplemented with cereal grain to increase milk production of dairy cows. Perennial ryegrass (PRG; Lolium perenne L.) is the most commonly used pasture species, with a wide range of cultivars available. However, the nutritive characteristics and the degradation of nutrients in individual PRG cultivars grown in different environments in Australia are unknown, and significant variation between cultivars may impact on supplementary nutrient requirements.
Aims
The objective of this experiment was to quantify the extent of ruminal degradation of nutrients in three contrasting PRG cultivars (Bealey NEA2, Trojan NEA2 and Victorian SE) harvested during early spring and summer from Gippsland, northern Victoria and south-west Victoria in Victoria, Australia.
Methods
Degradation parameters were determined by in situ incubation in the rumens of non-lactating, rumen-fistulated Holstein–Friesian cows for 72 h using a nylon bag technique.
Key results
During both seasons, Bealey NEA2 had the greatest effective degradability of crude protein and neutral detergent fibre compared with Trojan NEA2 and Victorian SE. Cultivars harvested during early spring had greater effective degradability of crude protein and neutral detergent fibre, and a greater amount of rumen degradable protein compared with cultivars harvested during summer. Cultivars harvested from Gippsland had greater crude protein and neutral detergent fibre effective degradability, as well as a greater amount of rumen degradable protein, whereas cultivars harvested from northern Victoria had a greater amount of undegraded dietary protein.
Conclusions
These results demonstrate that the ruminal degradation of PRG cultivars declines with increasing maturity, and that there are differences between cultivars and regions; however, differences between seasons are of a greater magnitude and are more important to consider when formulating optimal supplementary grain rations.
Implications
This research has positive implications for farmers who will be able to understand the degradation of nutrients in PRG, and the amounts of rumen degradable protein and undegraded dietary protein available from pasture during each season. Farmers will be able to use this information to formulate supplementary grain rations that complement the nutrients from pasture and optimise milk production.

Abstract
Wheat is the most common concentrate fed to grazing dairy cows in Australia, but no studies have examined the effects of wheat proportion in a pasture-based diet on milk production and methane emissions. In this 47-d experiment, 32 Holstein dairy cows were offered 1 of 4 diets during d 1 to 36. Cows in each of the dietary treatment groups were individually offered no wheat (W0) or wheat at 3 kg of dry matter (DM)/d (W3), 6 kg of DM/d (W6), or 9 kg of DM/d (W9). The remainder of the diet was 2.2 kg of DM of concentrate mix and freshly harvested perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) such that all individual cows were offered a total diet of approximately 20.2 kg of DM/d. From d 37 to 47 the diets of cows receiving treatments W0 and W3 remained unchanged, but cows in treatments W6 and W9 received the W3 diet. Individual cow feed intakes, milk yields, milk compositions, and methane emissions were measured for d 31 to 35 (period 1) and d 45 to 47 (period 2). During period 1, the mean intakes of cows offered the W0, W3, W6, and W9 diets were 19.2, 20.4, 20.2, and 19.8 kg of DM/d. Diet caused differences in energy-corrected milk, and means for W0, W3, W6, and W9 were 29.5, 32.4, 33.0, and 32.9 kg/d, respectively. Milk fat percentage differed with respective means of 3.93, 3.94, 3.69, and 3.17. Diets also caused differences in methane emissions, with means for W0, W3, W6, and W9 of 440, 431, 414, and 319 g/d. During period 1, the cows fed the W9 diet produced less methane and had lower methane yields (g/kg of DMI) and intensities (g/kg of energy-corrected milk) than cows fed the W3 diet. However, in period 2 when the wheat intake of cows in the W9 treatment was reduced to the same level as in the W3 treatment, their methane emissions, yields, and intensities were similar to those offered the W3 treatment, yet protozoa numbers in ruminal fluid were still much lower than those in cows offered the W3 treatment. Our research shows that for diets based on perennial ryegrass and crushed wheat, only the diet containing more than 30% crushed wheat resulted in substantially depressed milk fat concentration and reduced methane emissions, methane yield, and methane intensity. Thus, although feeding a diet with a high proportion of wheat can cause substantial methane mitigation, it can come at the cost of depression in milk fat concentration.

Abstract
Diets that contain high proportions of either wheat or supplementary fat have been individually reported to reduce enteric methane production. The objective of this research was to determine the effect of dietary fat supplementation on methane emissions and milk yield from cows fed diets containing either corn or wheat grains. It was hypothesized that cows fed a diet containing wheat would produce less methane and have lower methane yield (methane per kg of dry matter intake; MY) than cows fed a diet containing corn and that methane mitigation from fat supplementation would occur irrespective of the type of grain in the basal diet. The experiment involved 32 Holstein-Friesian dairy cows allocated to 1 of 4 treatment groups (n = 8) and individually fed different diets restricted to approximately 90% of their mean ad libitum intake measured during a covariate period. All animals were offered 11.5 kg of dry matter/d of alfalfa hay, 1.8 kg of dry matter/d of solvent-extracted canola meal, and 1 of 4 dietary supplements. Dietary supplements were 8 kg of dry matter/d of either corn or wheat, or these same treatments with the addition of 0.8 kg of canola oil. In this 5-wk experiment, d 1 to 7 served as the covariate period, d 8 to 14 as the transition period, d 15 to 28 as the adaptation period, and d 29 to 35 as the experimental period. Cows were fed their full treatment diets from d 15 to 35 during which time milk production and feed intake were measured daily. During d 29 to 35, methane production was measured for individual cows daily using the sulfur hexafluoride tracer method. The resulting averages for milk production and feed intake were analyzed by analysis of covariance with factorial grain by fat as treatment structure, animal as the unit within blocks, and the corresponding milk production or feed intake covariate averages as principal covariate. Data on milk fatty acids, ruminal fluid data on pH, ammonia, volatile fatty acids, protozoa, and methane were analyzed by ANOVA using the same treatment and blocking structures excluding the principal covariate. Cows fed a diet containing wheat had greater MY than cows fed a diet containing corn. Irrespective of the type of grain in the diet, increasing the fat concentration from 2 to 6% dry matter reduced MY. It is concluded that the grain component in the basal diet does not affect the mitigating effects of dietary fat supplements on MY.

Abstract
There has been little research that has quantified methane (CH4) yields when dairy cows consume diets containing wheat grain. Furthermore, although rumen-fistulated animals have been used in many experiments concerned with measuring CH4 emissions, no research has examined the effect of rumen fistulation on in vivo CH4 emissions and yield. This experiment examined the effects of including either wheat or corn grain in the diet and the effects of rumen fistulation on yields of milk and milk components, CH4 emissions, yields, and intensities. Eight rumen-fistulated and six non-fistulated Holstein dairy cows in late lactation were offered a wheat-based diet (WHT) and a corn-based diet (CRN) in a crossover design. For the WHT diet, cows were offered daily, 22.4 kg DM containing 45.5% lucerne hay, 8.9% canola meal, 0.5% mineral mix, 0.5% molasses powder and 44.6% rolled wheat. The CRN diet was similar to the WHT diet except that rolled corn replaced the wheat. There was no difference between the WHT and CRN diets on mean milk yields (27.8 vs 27.9 kg/day), but the WHT diet substantially reduced milk fat concentration (2.76 vs 4.23%) and milk fat yield (0.77 vs 1.18 kg/day). Methane emissions (218 vs 424 g/day), CH4 yield (11.1 vs 19.5 g/kg dry matter intake) and CH4 intensity (7.6 vs 15.7 g/kg milk) were all reduced ~45% by the WHT diet compared with the CRN diet. Rumen fistulation did not affect dry matter intake, milk production, milk composition or CH4 emissions, but decreased CH4 yield and intensity. Including wheat in the diet of dairy cows has the potential to be an effective strategy to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, rumen fistulation was associated with a small reduction in CH4 yield and intensity, and this should be considered when using rumen-fistulated cows in research concerned with CH4 emissions.

Abstract
Milk production responses were measured in grazing cows offered mixed rations with or without canola meal. Experiments were conducted in spring (Experiment 1; early lactation) and autumn (Experiment 2; late lactation). The experiments used 140 (Experiment 1) or 96 (Experiment 2) Holstein-Friesian multiparous dairy cows that had calved in late winter/early spring. Each experiment lasted 28 days including a 14-day adjustment period and a 14-day measurement period during which intake and milk production was measured. In each experiment, there were two dietary treatments: PMR: cows grazed a restricted pasture allowance (10–15 kg DM/cow per day, measured to ground level) supplemented with a PMR comprising wheat grain (60%, DM basis), lucerne hay (21%) and maize grain (19%); and PMR+C: cows were fed the same as the PMR cows, but some wheat grain in the PMR was replaced with solvent-extracted canola meal so that it comprised wheat grain (39%, DM basis), lucerne hay (21%), maize grain (19%) and canola meal (21%). The two treatments were randomly allocated to half the cows in each experiment. Cows were then further allocated into 10 groups of 7 cows (Experiment 1) or 8 groups of 6 cows (Experiment 2). Two groups of cows were assigned to receive a different amount of each ration: 8, 10, 12, 14 or 16 kg DM total supplement/cow per day for Experiment 1 and 6, 8, 10 or 12 kg DM total supplement/cow per day for Experiment 2. In Experiment 1, yields of energy corrected milk (ECM), milk fat, and milk protein were greater for PMR+C cows than PMR cows when 12 kg/cow per day of supplement or more was offered. Milk protein concentration was greater in PMR+C cows than PMR cows but only when 16 kg DM supplement/cow per day was offered. These changes in milk yield and composition were associated with increases in the intakes of pasture, supplement and total DM intake in the PMR+C cows compared with the PMR cows. In Experiment 2 there were no differences in milk yield or composition between PMR and PMR+C cows at any amount of supplement offered, nor were there any differences in intakes of pasture, supplement or total DM intake. It is concluded that replacing some of the wheat in a well-formulated PMR with canola meal can stimulate DMI and increase per-cow production of ECM when high amounts of supplement are fed in early lactation, but not late lactation.

Abstract
The effects of a major dietary change on ruminal fluid pH, volatile fatty acid (VFA), lactate and ammonia concentrations, dry matter intake (DMI) and milk yield were measured in 32 dairy cows in late lactation. All cows were initially fed 100% lucerne hay cubes and were then gradually introduced to a diet with wheat comprising 40% of total dry matter (DM) and lucerne hay cubes, the remainder. Wheat was gradually substituted for lucerne via one of four strategies, (1) in six small increments (each 6.7% of total DM) over 6 days; (2) in six small increments (each 6.7% of total DM) over 11 days; (3) in three large increments (each 13.3% of total DM) over 6 days; or (4) in three large increments (each 13.3% of total DM) over 11 days. The introduction of wheat in six small increments resulted in a lower daily minimum ruminal fluid pH (pH 5.95) when compared with using three large increments (pH 6.05). Despite this difference none of the treatments exhibited a ruminal fluid pH that would have compromised ruminal function, nor were there differences in DMI (19.7 kg DM/cow.day) or milk yield (16.0 kg/cow.day). Additionally, there were no differences between ruminal fluid VFA, lactate or ammonia concentrations. It is speculated that the properties of the lucerne cubes, including a high buffering capacity, helped the ruminal contents resist the pronounced declines in pH often seen with the fermentation of large amounts of wheat. Under the conditions of this experiment the wheat adaptation strategies used did not lead to any critical differences in rumen parameters. These results suggest that changes to rumen function are driven not only by the characteristics of the concentrate being introduced but also by those of the forage.

Abstract
The effects of different wheat adaptation strategies on ruminal fluid pH, dry matter intake (DMI) and energy-corrected milk (ECM) were measured in 28 late-lactation dairy cows. Cows were fed either perennial ryegrass (PRG) hay or alfalfa hay and had no previous wheat adaptation. Wheat was gradually substituted for forage in 3 even increments, over 6 or 11 d, until wheat made up 40% of DMI (∼8 kg of dry matter/cow per day). We found no differences in DMI between adaptation strategies (6 or 11 d) within forage type; however, cows fed alfalfa hay consumed more overall and produced more ECM. The rate of ruminal pH decline after feeding, as well as the decrease in mean, minimum, and maximum ruminal pH with every additional kilogram of wheat was greater for cows fed alfalfa hay. Cows fed alfalfa hay and on the 6-d adaptation strategy had the lowest mean and minimum ruminal fluid pH on 3 consecutive days and were the only treatment group to record pH values below 6.0. Despite ruminal pH declining to levels typically considered low, no other measured parameters indicated compromised fermentation or acidosis. Rather, cows fed alfalfa hay and adapted to wheat over 6 d had greater ECM yields than cows on the 11-d strategy. This was due to the 6-d adaptation strategy increasing the metabolizable energy intake in a shorter period than the 11-d strategy, as substituting wheat for alfalfa hay caused a substantial increase in the metabolizable energy concentration of the diet. We found no difference in ECM between adaptation strategies when PRG hay was fed, as there was no difference in metabolizable energy intake. The higher metabolizable energy concentration and lower intake of the PRG hay meant the increase in metabolizable energy intake with the substitution of wheat was less pronounced for cows consuming PRG hay compared with alfalfa hay. Neither forage type nor adaptation strategy affected time spent ruminating. The higher intakes likely contributed to the lower ruminal pH values from the alfalfa hay treatments. However, both forages allowed the rumen contents to resist the large declines in ruminal pH typically seen during rapid grain adaptation. Depending on the choice of base forage, rapid grain introduction may not result in poor adaptation. In situations where high-energy grains are substituted for a low-energy, high-fiber basal forage, rapid introduction could prove beneficial over gradual strategies.

Abstract
Short-term studies have shown that feeding dairy cows diets containing a high proportion (>40%) of wheat may result in reduced milk fat concentration and reduced CH4 emissions (g of CH4/cow per d), but no long-term studies have been done on these responses. This study compared the milk production and CH4 responses when 24 dairy cows were fed diets containing high proportions of either wheat or corn over 16 wk. Cows were assigned to 2 groups and offered a diet (CRN) containing 10.0 kg of dry matter/d of crushed corn grain, 1.8 kg of dry matter/d of canola meal, 0.2 kg of dry matter/d of minerals, and 11.0 kg of dry matter/d of chopped alfalfa hay or a similar diet (WHT) in which wheat replaced the corn. Dry matter intake and milk yields of individual cows were measured daily. Methane emissions from individual cows were measured using controlled climate respiration chambers over 2 consecutive days during each of wk 4, 10, and 16. Milk composition was measured on the 2 d when cows were in chambers during wk 4, 10, and 16. Over the 16-wk experimental period, total dry matter intake remained relatively constant and similar for the 2 dietary treatment groups. At wk 4, CH4 emission, CH4 yield (g of CH4/kg of dry matter intake), milk fat yield, and milk fat concentration were substantially less in cows fed the WHT diet compared with the same metrics in cows fed the CRN diet; but these differences were not apparent at wk 10 and 16. The responses over time in these metrics were not similar in all cows. In 4 cows fed the WHT diet, CH4 yield, milk fat concentration, and milk fat yield remained relatively constant from wk 4 to 16, whereas for 5 fed the WHT diet, their CH4 emissions, milk fat yields, and milk fat concentrations almost doubled between wk 4 and 16. In the short term (4 wk), the inclusion of approximately 45% wheat instead of corn in the diet of cows resulted in reductions of 39% in CH4 yield, 35% in milk fat concentration, and 40% in milk fat yield. However, these reductions did not persist to wk 10 or beyond. Our data indicate that cows do not all respond in the same way with some "adaptive" cows showing a marked increase in CH4 yield, milk fat concentration, and milk fat yield after wk 4, whereas in other "nonadaptive" cows, these metrics were persistently inhibited to 16 wk. This research shows that short-term studies on dietary interventions to mitigate enteric CH4 emissions may not always predict the long-term effects of such interventions.

Abstract
Grape marc consists of the skins, seeds and stems remaining after grapes have been pressed to make wine. Interest in grape marc for use as a dietary feed additive for ruminants has grown after recent research showed that inclusion of grape marc in the diet of dairy cows reduced their enteric methane (CH4) emissions. In the present research, in vitro fermentations were conducted on 20 diverse grape marcs to evaluate their potential as ruminant feed supplements and, in particular, mitigants of enteric CH4 emissions. The grape marcs, which were sourced from vineyards in south-eastern Australia, contained a range of red and white grape varieties with different proportions of skins, seeds and stalks, and had diverse chemical compositions. For each grape marc, four replicate samples, each of 1 g DM, were incubated in vitro with ruminal fluid. The volumes of total gas and CH4 produced after 48 h of incubation were determined. Total gas production ranged from 21.8 to 146.9 mL and CH4 production from 6.8 to 30.3 mL. White grape marcs produced more (P < 0.05) total gas (81.8 mL) than did red grape marcs (61.0 mL), but had a lower (P < 0.05) percentage of CH4 (25.3% and 30.3% of total gas). Grape marcs with a higher proportion of seeds produced less (P < 0.05) total gas than did the types composed of either skin or stalks; however, the seed types produced the greatest (P < 0.05) percentage of CH4 (49.8% of total gas). It is concluded that grape marcs differ greatly in their potential as mitigants of enteric CH4 emissions for ruminal production systems.

Abstract
Holstein–Friesian dairy cows managed in pasture-based systems are capable of lactating for considerably longer than the traditional 300 days. However, the partitioning of dietary nutrients in the second 300 days of an extended lactation has been shown to be different from that in the first 300 days. The partitioning of dietary nitrogen (N) was investigated using two groups of eight Holstein cows in four experimental periods of 6 days, at 110, 270, 450 and 560 days in milk (DIM). During each period, cows were housed in individual stalls where N intake and output were measured. Cows in a control group received a forage-based diet ad libitum, whereas cows in a second group received 5 kg DM of cereal grain and the basal forage diet ad libitum. N intake was positively related to outputs of milk N, urinary N and faecal N, and negatively to N-use efficiency (NUE). DIM was positively related to output of urinary N and negatively related to NUE and outputs of milk N and faecal N. The partitioning of N in the second year of an extended lactation was different from that in the first year, meaning that the partitioning of N reported for cows up to 300 DIM cannot be used to accurately predict the partitioning of N in cows beyond 300 DIM. Adding grain to the diet increased total nitrogen intake but decreased NUE. However, it is plausible for the addition of cereal grain to the diet of dairy cows to increase NUE, but only when the concentration of dietary crude protein decreases and any increase in dry-matter intake is small, such that total nitrogen intake is decreased.

Abstract
There is a need to develop simple, accurate methods for predicting methane emissions, yields and intensities of dairy cows. Several studies have focussed on the relationship between the concentrations of trans-10 plus trans-11 C18:1 fatty acids in milk fat and methane yield. The aim of the present study was to perform a meta-analysis to quantify relationships between the concentrations of various trans isomers of C18:1 in milk fat and methane emissions (g/day), methane yield (g/kg dry-matter intake) and methane intensity (g/kg energy-corrected milk yield). Data were from seven experiments encompassing 23 different diets and 220 observations of milk fatty acid concentrations and methane emissions. Univariate linear mixed-effects regression models were fitted to the data with the linear term as a fixed effect and with experiment and observation within experiment as random effects. Concentrations of trans-9, trans-10, trans-11 and trans-10 plus trans-11 isomers of C18:1 were poorly related to methane emissions, yields and intensities, with the best relationships being between trans-10 C18:1 and methane emissions (R2 = 0.356), trans-10 C18:1 and methane yield (R2 = 0.265) and trans-10 plus trans-11 C18:1 and methane intensity (R2 = 0.124). The data indicated that the relationships between trans-10 C18:1 and methane metrics were not linear, but were biphasic and better described by an exponential model. However, even exponential models poorly fitted the data. It is concluded that the concentrations of trans isomers of C18:1 have limited potential to accurately predict methane emissions, yields or intensities of dairy cows.

Abstract
The methods for estimating methane emissions from cattle as used in the Australian national inventory are based on older data that have now been superseded by a large amount of more recent data. Recent data suggested that the current inventory emissions estimates can be improved. To address this issue, a total of 1034 individual animal records of daily methane production (MP) was used to reassess the relationship between MP and each of dry matter intake (DMI) and gross energy intake (GEI). Data were restricted to trials conducted in the past 10 years using open-circuit respiration chambers, with cattle fed forage-based diets (forage >70%). Results from diets considered to inhibit methanogenesis were omitted from the dataset. Records were obtained from dairy cattle fed temperate forages (220 records), beef cattle fed temperate forages (680 records) and beef cattle fed tropical forages (133 records). Relationships were very similar for all three production categories and single relationships for MP on a DMI or GEI basis were proposed for national inventory purposes. These relationships were MP (g/day) = 20.7 (±0.28) × DMI (kg/day) (R2 = 0.92, P < 0.001) and MP (MJ/day) = 0.063 (±0.008) × GEI (MJ/day) (R2 = 0.93, P < 0.001). If the revised MP (g/day) approach is used to calculate Australia’s national inventory, it will reduce estimates of emissions of forage-fed cattle by 24%. Assuming a global warming potential of 25 for methane, this represents a 12.6 Mt CO2-e reduction in calculated annual emissions from Australian cattle.

Abstract
A widely used method for the in vitro measurement of fermentation parameters, total gas and methane (CH4) production (mL/g) from feed samples employs AnkomRF Technology with vented bottles, initially flushed with carbon dioxide (CO2). The volumes of gas accumulated between ventings, and the volumes vented, are calculated from the headspace pressure data. By using these data, it is possible to infer mathematically the quantity of CH4 produced, given just a single measurement of the CH4 mixing ratio measured in the headspace at the termination of fermentation. However, this calculation requires an additional assumption. Two possibilities for this are considered. We present mathematical formulae arising from each, and describe their sensitivity to violations of their respective assumptions. Also considered is a formula based on using N2 instead of CO2 as the flushing gas. It appears that, in practice, all three formulae are suitable for estimating CH4 production, with errors less than 3%.

Abstract
Forage brassica and chicory crops provide an alternative to perennial grass pastures as a forage supply for grazing dairy cows during summer, but there is little information about their effects on milk production and methane (CH4) emissions. Thirty-two Holstein–Friesian cows were fed for 10 days on a diet of lucerne cubes (750 g/kg DM) and grain (250 g/kg DM) (CON) or diets in which forage brassica (410 g/kg DM, FBR) or reproductive-stage chicory (410 g/kg DM, RCH) were offered with lucerne cubes (340 g/kg DM) and grain (250 g/kg DM). Cows offered the FBR diet produced more energy-corrected milk (25.4 kg/day) than did cows offered the CON diet (22.7 kg/day, P = 0.001), even though DM intake was not different for cows between the two groups (20.6 kg/day on average). In contrast, cows offered the RCH diet produced less energy-corrected milk (19.3 kg/day) than did cows in the other two groups (P = 0.001), reflecting the lower DM intake by cows offered the RCH diet (17.7 kg/day, P < 0.01). Methane yield (g CH4/kg DMI) was lower (P < 0.01) on the CON (21.0) and FBR (20.5) diets than on the RCH diet (26.1). Methane intensity (g/kg energy-corrected milk) was different (P < 0.01) for all diets, with CON (19.4) being intermediate, FBR (17.3) lowest and RCH (23.8) the greatest. Diet type was associated with differences in the proportions of only a small number of specific milk fatty acids, and differences in proportions of specific fatty acids were not related to CH4 emissions.

Abstract
Late-lactation Holstein cows (n=144) that were offered 15kg dry matter (DM)/cow per day of perennial ryegrass to graze were randomized into 24 groups of 6. Each group contained a fistulated cow and groups were allocated to 1 of 3 feeding strategies: (1) control (10 groups): cows were fed crushed wheat grain twice daily in the milking parlor and ryegrass silage at pasture; (2) partial mixed ration (PMR; 10 groups): PMR that was isoenergetic to the control diet and fed twice daily on a feed pad; (3) PMR+canola (4 groups): a proportion of wheat in the PMR was replaced with canola meal to produce more estimated metabolizable protein than other groups. Supplements were fed to the control and PMR cows at 8, 10, 12, 14, or 16kg of DM/d, and to the PMR+canola cows at 14 or 16kg of DM/d. The PMR-fed cows had a lower incidence of ruminal acidosis compared with controls, and ruminal acidosis increased linearly and quadratically with supplement fed. Yield of milk fat was highest in the PMR+canola cows fed 14 or 16kg of total supplement DM/d, followed by the PMR-fed cows, and was lowest in controls fed at these amounts; a similar trend was observed for milk fat percentage. Milk protein yield was higher in the PMR+canola cows fed 14 or 16kg of total supplement DM/d. Milk yield and milk protein percentage were not affected by feeding strategy. Milk, energy-corrected milk, and milk protein yields increased linearly with supplement fed, whereas milk fat percentage decreased. Ruminal butyrate and d-lactate concentrations, acetate-to-propionate ratio, (acetate + butyrate)/propionate, and pH increased in PMR-fed cows compared with controls for all supplement amounts, whereas propionate and valerate concentrations decreased. Ruminal acetate, butyrate, and ammonia concentrations, acetate-to-propionate ratio, (acetate + butyrate)/propionate, and pH linearly decreased with amounts of supplement fed. Ruminal propionate concentration linearly increased and valerate concentration linearly and quadratically increased with supplement feeding amount. The Bacteroidetes and Firmicutes were the dominant bacterial phyla identified. The Prevotellaceae, Ruminococcaceae, and Lachnospiraceae were the dominant bacterial families, regardless of feeding group, and were influenced by feeding strategy, supplement feeding amount, or both. The Veillonellaceae family decreased in relative abundance in PMR-fed cows compared with controls, and the Streptococcaeae and Lactobacillaceae families were present in only minor relative abundances, regardless of feeding group. Despite large among- and within-group variation in bacterial community composition, distinct bacterial communities occurred among feeding strategies, supplement amounts, and sample times and were associated with ruminal fermentation measures. Control cows fed 16kg of DM of total supplement per day had the most distinct ruminal bacterial community composition. Bacterial community composition was most significantly associated with supplement feeding amount and ammonia, butyrate, valerate, and propionate concentrations. Feeding supplements in a PMR reduced the incidence of ruminal acidosis and altered ruminal bacterial communities, regardless of supplement feeding amount, but did not result in increased milk measures compared with isoenergetic control diets component-fed to late-lactation cows.

Abstract
Grape marc (the skins, seeds, stalk, and stems remaining after grapes have been pressed to make wine) is currently a by-product used as a feed supplement by the dairy and beef industries. Grape marc contains condensed tannins and has high concentrations of crude fat; both these substances can reduce enteric methane (CH4) production when fed to ruminants. This experiment examined the effects of dietary supplementation with either dried, pelleted grape marc or ensiled grape marc on yield and composition of milk, enteric CH4 emissions, and ruminal microbiota in dairy cows. Thirty-two Holstein dairy cows in late lactation were offered 1 of 3 diets: a control (CON) diet; a diet containing dried, pelleted grape marc (DGM); and a diet containing ensiled grape marc (EGM). The diet offered to cows in the CON group contained 14.0kg of alfalfa hay dry matter (DM)/d and 4.3kg of concentrate mix DM/d. Diets offered to cows in the DGM and EGM groups contained 9.0kg of alfalfa hay DM/d, 4.3kg of concentrate mix DM/d, and 5.0kg of dried or ensiled grape marc DM/d, respectively. These diets were offered individually to cows for 18d. Individual cow feed intake and milk yield were measured daily and milk composition measured on 4d/wk. Individual cow CH4 emissions were measured by the SF6 tracer technique on 2d at the end of the experiment. Ruminal bacterial, archaeal, fungal, and protozoan communities were quantified on the last day of the experiment. Cows offered the CON, DGM, and EGM diets, ate 95, 98, and 96%, respectively, of the DM offered. The mean milk yield of cows fed the EGM diet was 12.8kg/cow per day and was less than that of cows fed either the CON diet (14.6kg/cow per day) or the DGM diet (15.4kg/cow per day). Feeding DGM and EGM diets was associated with decreased milk fat yields, lower concentrations of saturated fatty acids, and enhanced concentrations of mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids, in particular cis-9,trans-11 linoleic acid. The mean CH4 emissions were 470, 375, and 389g of CH4/cow per day for cows fed the CON, DGM, and EGM diets, respectively. Methane yields were 26.1, 20.2, and 21.5g of CH4/kg of DMI for cows fed the CON, DGM, and EGM diets, respectively. The ruminal bacterial and archaeal communities were altered by dietary supplementation with grape marc, but ruminal fungal and protozoan communities were not. Decreases of approximately 20% in CH4 emissions and CH4 yield indicate that feeding DGM and EGM could play a role in CH4 abatement.

Abstract
Methane (CH4) emissions from dairy cows are technically difficult and expensive to measure. Recently, some researchers have found correlations between the concentrations of specific fatty acids in milk fat and the CH4 emissions from cows that could obviate the need for direct measurement. In this research, data on individual cow CH4 emissions and concentration of caprylic acid (C8:0) and total C18 fatty acids in milk were collated from eight experiments involving 27 forage-based diets and 246 Holstein-Friesian dairy cows. Linear regressions between CH4 and both C8:0 and total C18 in milk were produced for published data and used to calculate 95% prediction regions for a new observation. The proportion of observed methane emissions from eight experiments that fell outside the 95% prediction region was 27.6% for the C8:0 model and 26.3% for the total C18 model. Neither model predicted CH4 emission well with Lin’s coefficient of concordance of less than 0.4 and the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient of approximately zero for both the C8:0 and total C18 models. In addition, general linear model analysis showed significant differences between experiments in their intercepts (P < 0.001) and slopes (P < 0.001). It is concluded that the relationships tested cannot be used to accurately predict CH4 emissions when cows are fed a wide range of diets.

Abstract
The objective of this experiment was to compare ruminal pH and whole-tract digestibility in cows consuming fresh cut herbage plus concentrates and silage or hay fed either separately or as a partial mixed ration (PMR). Fourteen rumen-fistulated Holstein-Friesian cows that had calved in late winter were housed in metabolism stalls for 9-day experiments in spring (97 days in milk (DIM)) and autumn (237 DIM). All cows were offered 8 kg dry matter (DM)/day of fresh cut perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) herbage, provided in two equal portions after each milking. Seven cows were assigned to each of two diets: (i) Control: 8.8 kg DM/cow.day milled wheat grain in two equal portions at milking, plus 3.2 kg DM/cow.day perennial ryegrass silage, with all cows receiving the silage portion of their diet after their grain but before their fresh herbage at the afternoon milking; and (ii) PMR: 12 kg DM/cow.day of a PMR containing similar ME as the Control supplements, but comprising maize grain, maize silage, wheat grain, lucerne hay (spring) and pasture silage (autumn). Intake and faecal output was measured on 5 days during each experiment, and ruminal pH was measured every 2 h for a 24-h period. Degradability of wheat and maize grain was measured using standard in sacco techniques. In both experiments, cows fed PMR had higher ruminal fluid pH than Control cows for at least part of the day. Apparent whole-tract digestibilities of DM, organic matter, nitrogen, neutral detergent fibre and starch were greater for Control than PMR cows in spring and not different in autumn (except starch). Ruminal pH was increased by feeding a maize-based PMR but this was not associated with increased whole-tract digestibility. We conclude that the ruminal pH in the Control cows was not low enough for long enough to compromise digestion, or that there was compensatory post-ruminal digestion.

Abstract
This study examined effects on milk yield and composition, milk fatty acid concentrations and methane (CH4) emissions when dairy cows were offered diets containing different amounts of algal meal. The algal meal contained 20% docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and cows were offered either 0, 125, 250, or 375 g/cow per d of algal meal corresponding to 0, 25, 50, or 75 g of DHA/cow per d. Thirty-two Holstein cows in mid lactation were allocated to 4 treatment groups, and cows in all groups were individually offered 5.9k g of dry matter (DM) per day of concentrates [683 g/kg of cracked wheat (Triticum aestivum), 250 g/kg of cold-pressed canola, 46 g/kg of granulated dried molasses, and 21 g/kg of mineral mix] and ad libitum alfalfa (Medicago sativa) hay. The algal meal supplement was added to the concentrate allowance and was fed during the morning and afternoon milking, whereas the alfalfa hay was fed individually in pens. Cows were gradually introduced to their diets over 7d and then fed their treatment diets for a further 16d. Dry matter intake and milk yield were measured daily, and milk composition was measured on a sample representative of the daily milk yield on Thursday of each week. For the last 2d of the experiment, cows were individually housed in respiration chambers to allow measurement of CH4 emissions. Dry matter intake, milk yield and milk composition were also measured while cows were in the respiration chambers. Cows ate all their offered concentrates, but measured intake of alfalfa decreased with increasing dose of DHA by 16.2, 16.4, 15.1, and 14.3 kg of DM/d, respectively. Milk yield (22.6, 23.5, 22.6, and 22.6 kg/cow per d) was not affected by DHA dose, but milk fat concentrations (49.7, 37.8, 37.0, and 38.3g/kg) and, consequently, milk fat yields (1.08, 0.90, 0.83, and 0.85 kg/d) decreased with addition of DHA. The feeding of algal meal high in DHA was associated with substantial increases in the concentrations of DHA (0.04, 0.36, 0.60, and 0.91 g/100g of milk fatty acids) and conjugated linoleic acid C18:2 cis-9,trans-11 (0.36, 1.09, 1.79, and 1.87 g/100g of milk fatty acids). Addition of DHA did not affect total emissions of CH4 (543, 563, 553, and 520 g/cow per d), nor emissions in terms of milk production (24.9, 22.1, 24.3, and 23.4 g of CH4/kg of milk), but emissions were increased with respect to total intake (22.6, 23.5, 24.5, and 24.4 g of CH4/kg of DM). These findings indicate that CH4 emissions were not reduced when dairy cows were fed a forage-based diet supplemented with DHA from algal meal.

Abstract
A 3-year experiment compared the effects of wild-type ryegrass endophyte and two novel endophytes on milk production in dairy cattle. On three 9.9-ha farmlets in West Gippsland, Victoria, pasture swards were established that were dominant in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) infected with either wild-type, AR1 or AR37 endophytes. Each farmlet was stocked with 25 spring-calving Holstein–Friesian cows, which rotationally grazed nine paddocks within their farmlet during three lactations over 3 years. The three endophytes are known to produce different alkaloids, with wild-type producing ergot alkaloids, lolitrems and peramine, AR1 producing peramine and AR37 producing epoxy-janthitrems. These alkaloids were present in fresh pasture as well as hay and silage made from that pasture. Grazed pasture comprised 53% of estimated annual DM intake. The proportion was least from December to March when the daily ration of 2 kg DM/cow.day cereal grain was increased to 6 kg/day and forage supplements were fed consisting of purchased lucerne (Medicago sativa) hay and pasture silage grown on the farmlets. There were no differences in pasture accumulation rates or nutritive characteristics of ryegrass pastures on the three farmlets and no differences in the production of milk, fat or protein by cows grazing pasture infected with the three endophytes. Ryegrass staggers was only observed in four cows consuming the wild-type-infected ryegrass in the first year when the highest concentrations of lolitrem B were recorded in pasture. Soil samples showed lower numbers of root aphids (Aploneura lentisci), mealybugs (Pseudococcidae) and pasture tunnel moths (Philobota spp.) beneath ryegrass infected with the AR37 endophyte compared with the other two endophytes. Numbers of redheaded (Adoryphorus couloni) and blackheaded (Aphodius tasmaniae) cockchafers did not differ between treatments. Under dairy management and supplementary feeding regimes common to south-eastern Australia, the novel endophytes AR1 and AR37 had no effect on the milk production compared with the wild-type endophyte, and did not cause ryegrass staggers.

Abstract
We examined the effects of monensin, provided by controlled-release capsules, on the enteric methane emissions and milk production of dairy cows receiving ryegrass pasture and grain. In a grazing experiment, 60 Holstein-Friesian cows were assigned randomly to 1 of 2 groups (control or monensin). Cows in the monensin group received 2 controlled-release capsules, with the second capsule administered 130 d after the first. Milk production was measured for 100 d following insertion of each capsule. The sulfur hexafluoride tracer gas technique was used to measure enteric methane emissions for 4 d starting on d 25 and 81 after insertion of the first capsule, and on d 83 after insertion of the second capsule. All cows grazed together as a single herd on a predominantly ryegrass sward and received 5 kg/d of grain (as-fed basis). In a second experiment, 7 pairs of lactating dairy cows (control and monensin) were used to determine the effects of monensin controlled-release capsules on methane emissions and dry matter intake. Methane emissions were measured on d 75 after capsule insertion by placing cows in respiration chambers for 3 d. Cows received fresh ryegrass pasture harvested daily and 5 kg/d of grain. The release rate of monensin from the capsules used in both experiments was 240 +/- 0.072 mg/d, determined over a 100-d period in ruminally cannulated cows. The monensin dose was calculated to be 12 to 14.5 mg/kg of dry matter intake. There was no effect of monensin on methane production in either the grazing experiment (g/d, g/kg of milk solids) or the chamber experiment (g/d, g/kg of dry matter intake). In the grazing study, there was no effect of monensin on milk yield, but monensin increased milk fat yield by 51.5 g/d and tended to increase milk protein yield by 18.5 g/d. Monensin controlled-release capsules improved the efficiency of milk production of grazing dairy cows by increasing the yield of milk solids. However, a higher dose rate of monensin may be needed to reduce methane emissions from cows grazing pasture.

Abstract
Milking regimes that can greatly shorten the milking duration of slow-milking cows to improve labour productivity can also result in less complete milking for some cows. There is also a common belief and limited experimental evidence that incomplete milking of subclinically infected cows can cause increased somatic cell count (SCC). To test for this possible detrimental effect of shorter milking regimes, ‘complete’ milking [to automatic cluster remover (ACR) setting of 300 mL/min] and ‘incomplete’ milking (to an ACR setting of 800 mL/min) were applied sequentially to 45 cows over 7 weeks. Incomplete milking resulted in an average of 0.3 L of extra milk being left in the udders, but there was no significant increase in quarter SCC in either infected or uninfected udder quarters. Change in SCC was not related to change in strip yield induced by incomplete milking treatment. In contrast, cow strip yield was positively related to SCC, or the number of infected quarters/cow, regardless of the applied ACR treatment. These apparently contradictory findings are reconciled by noting that infection causes both high strip yields (via uneven yielding quarters) and high SCC. It is concluded that, contrary to popular belief, high SCC, as an indicator of infection, causes high strip yield and that increasing strip yield does not increase cell count.

Abstract
Our study compared methane (CH4) emissions from lactating dairy cows measured using the sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer and open-circuit respiration chamber techniques. The study was conducted using 16 lactating Holstein-Friesian cows. In each chamber, the cow was fitted with the SF6 tracer apparatus to measure total CH4 emissions, including emissions from the rectum. Fresh ryegrass pasture was harvested daily and fed ad libitum to each cow with a supplement of 5 kg of grain/d. The CH4 emissions measured using the SF6 tracer technique were similar to those using the chamber technique: 331 vs. 322 g of CH4/d per cow. The accuracy of the SF6 tracer technique was indicated by considering the ratio of the CH4 emission measured using the SF6 tracer to the emission measured using the chamber for each cow on each day. The calculated ratio of 102.3% (SE = 1.51) was not different from 100%. A higher variability within cow between days was found for the SF6 tracer technique [coefficient of variation (CV) = 6.1%] than for the chamber technique (CV = 4.3%). The variability among cows was substantially higher than within cows, and was higher for the SF6 technique (CV = 19.6%) than for the chamber technique (CV = 17.8%). Our CH4 emission data were compared with whole-animal chamber studies conducted in Canada and Ireland. In the Canadian study the SF6 technique did not measure CH4 emissions from the rectum and emissions were 8% lower than those measured using the chamber, indicating that emissions from the rectum may be greater than previously measured (1%). The relationship between CH4 emission and dry matter intake was examined for our data and for that reported in the Canadian study. There was a difference in the slopes of the regressions derived from our data and that from Canada; 17.1 vs. 20.8 g of CH4/kg of dry matter intake. A difference between the 2 locations was expected based on the difference in diet composition for these 2 studies. The SF6 tracer technique is reasonably accurate for inventory purposes and for evaluating the effects of mitigation strategies on CH4 emissions.

Abstract
In this paper we use a statistical model to examine the relative precision of lactation milk yield and milk fat yield, under various production recording regimes with different metering and sampling precision, recording frequencies combined with empirical daily variations in milk yield and fat composition. The analysis shows that if traditional monthly production recording was performed with devices of International Committee for Animal Recording (ICAR) precision, the resultant coefficient of variation (CV) for lactation yields of milk and fat would be 2.22 and 4.81%, respectively. These values are determined primarily by measurement frequency coupled with the natural daily biological variations in animal milk yield and fat composition. Meter and sampler precision play a relatively minor role. For example, our model shows that if the devices had double the CV prescribed by ICAR, the milk and fat yield CV would increase by only 0.20 and 0.19%, respectively. These are minute losses of precision. If the ICAR precision standards for meters and samples were relaxed, it could encourage development of innovative metering and sampling technologies that could provide much more cost-effective and convenient ways for farmers to conduct production recording.

Abstract
A model for concordance in a binary measure that does not rely on the assumption of an underlying latent liability dichotomized about a threshold has been demonstrated for twin pairs [Hannah et al, 1983]. It is extended here to pedigrees of arbitrary structure by making an assumption that is, for small incidence rates, almost equivalent to postulating that relative risks are multiplicative. The model is applied to the workshop data to determine the extent to which the known structure of the simulated models can be recovered.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the distribution of drying times of umbilical cords of dairy calves and to determine if cord dryness is a reliable indicator of age. DESIGN An observational study was undertaken in a spring calving herd in Victoria, of the umbilical cords of 188 calves (82 Friesian bulls, 82 Friesian heifers, 24 crossbreds). PROCEDURE Umbilical cords were examined daily, visually and by palpation, until the cord to the junction of the skin on the abdomen of the calf was dry, shrivelled and inflexible. RESULTS Drying times ranged from 1 to 8 days. By the fifth day of life, the umbilical cords of 96.7% of all calves, 97.5% Friesian heifer calves, 87.5% of Friesian bull calves and 100% of cross-bred calves were dry. If cord dryness only was used to select calves for sale, 91.3% of all calves, 86.4% of Friesian bull calves and 100% of cross bred calves could have been sold before their fifth day of life. If calves were selected on age only, 3.3% of all calves, 2.5% of Friesian heifer calves and 12.5% of Friesian bull calves would have been sold before their umbilical cord was dry. CONCLUSION The dairy industry cannot rely on cord dryness alone as an indicator of age for selection of calves for sale and transportation. Cord dryness is a poor indicator of age.

Abstract
The effects of supplementing a basal diet of silage and hay with increasing amounts of harvested spring pasture, or with lupin and wheat, on the composition of milk and the consequent effects on cheese composition and yield were investigated in an indoor feeding study. Milk was collected from five groups of eight cows in mid lactation offered different diets and manufactured into Cheddar cheese on a pilot scale. Milk from cows given the lupin-wheat (LW) and the high pasture level (HP) diets produced low moisture cheese. Cheese produced with milk from cows given the control diet was high in moisture content compared with that made with milk from cows offered the LW diet. Cheese yields from the milk of cows offered the HP and LW diets were greater than from the milk of cows on the control diet, and were associated with the higher casein concentrations of these milks. Casein number was higher in milk from diets supplemented with pasture but was not an indicator of the functional properties of milk that affected cheese moisture. The proportion of beta-casein in milk from cows offered the HP diet was higher and that of gamma-casein lower than in milk from cows given the LW supplement, although cheese moisture content was similar with both diets. Milk from cows offered the HP diet had a greater inorganic P concentration than that from cows given the LW diet, although the dietary intake of P was higher for the LW diet. The significance of the effect of dietary P intake on the concentration of inorganic P in milk and hence its suitability for cheesemaking was apparent when dietary P intake was low, as shown in milk produced by cows offered the control diet.

Abstract
The effects of supplementing cows' diets with protein and energy on milk composition and the composition and yield of Cheddar cheese were investigated. This research addresses the problems of seasonal reduction in the capacity of cheese curds to expel moisture as observed in parts of south-eastern Australia. Milk was collected from cows offered a basal diet of silage and hay supplemented with different sources and levels of dietary protein and energy. The protein supplements were sunflower, canola, cottonseed meal and lupin, and the energy supplements were maize grain, oats, wheat and barely. This milk was used to manufacture Cheddar cheese on a pilot scale. Cheese moisture content was dependent on the source and level of dietary protein and energy. Milk from cows offered the lupin protein supplements and wheat energy supplements consistently produced cheese with a lower moisture content and moisture in fat-free matter. Milk from these supplemented diets had increased casein concentrations and higher proportions of alpha S2-casein than milk from the poor quality control diet. Cheese yield was directly related to the total casein concentration of milk, but was not influenced by differences in casein composition. Supplementing the cows' diets increased the inorganic P, Mg and Ca concentrations in milk. A low inorganic P concentration in milk from cows offered the control diet was caused by a low intake of dietary P. These findings showed that changes in the mineral and casein composition of milk, associated with diet, could influence the composition of Cheddar cheese.

Abstract
Applied dairy research is characterized by experiments for which financial and physical constraints permit only a small number of experimental units. With few units it is difficult to replicate treatments, and without replication experimental error cannot be estimated. The statistical analysis and interpretation of such experiments is problematic. However, if there have been several such experiments it may be possible to perform a combined analysis. Nine unreplicated experiments comparing effects of diet on the composition of cows' milk and on cheese characteristics were jointly analysed as an incomplete block design. This analysis method was contrasted with analyses of individual experiments. For cheese moisture, the key outcome measurement, the assessment of statistical significance concurred for the two methods in 13 out of 21 comparisons of treatments with the control. Sources of error variation allowed for under the two methods were delineated. The combined analysis paradigm provided stronger inference and a wider interpretation of results than could be achieved using analyses for individual experiments. Unequal replication of treatments and unequal concurrence of treatments within experiments over the series gave rise to a wide range of SED. The challenge of presenting results with unequal SED was addressed graphically using error bars. Attention to series design, in particular the apportioning of replication and treatment concurrence across the series of experiments, was shown to ameliorate presentation difficulties and, more importantly, to yield higher precision at no extra cost.

Abstract
The response of pastures based on Lolium perenne L. and
Trifolium subterraneum L. to single superphosphate was
assessed at Hamilton, Victoria, by measuring the growth of pastures during
winter, spring, and summer over 7 years from 1979 to 1987. The seasons were
defined by the pattern of pasture production, rather than by calendar months.
Winter was the period of constant growth rate following the autumn rain;
spring was the period of accelerating growth rate until growth rate changed
abruptly following the onset of dry summer weather. Pastures were grazed with
sheep at a low, medium, or high grazing pressure, corresponding generally to
stocking rates of 10, 14, or 18 sheep/ha. At each level of grazing
pressure, single superphosphate was applied at 5 rates from 1979 to 1982; the
highest rate, expressed as elemental phosphorus (P), was reduced from 100 to
40 kg/ha during this time. In addition there was an unfertilised
treatment. In 1984, fertiliser was applied at 6 rates from 4 to 40 kg
P/ha. No fertiliser was applied in the remaining years, including 1983.
Pasture production was measured from 1979 to 1982 and from 1985 to 1987.
Total pasture dry matter (DM) accumulation per year at the highest stocking
rate was less than the other treatments in 4 of the years. Averaged over all
years and fertiliser treatments, the annual net production was 10·1,
10·1, and 9·0 t DM/ha (P <
0·05) for plots grazed at low, medium, and high stocking rates,
respectively. The amount of fertiliser required to reach a given proportion of
maximum yield response did not vary between winter and spring in any year, but
the greater potential yield in spring (P < 0
·001) meant that as more fertiliser was applied, the disparity between
pasture grown in winter and pasture grown in spring increased. Differences in
this disparity between extreme levels of P ranged from 1·4 t DM/ha
in a drought to about 7 t DM/ha in a good season.
The implications for managing farms when pastures are fertilised at higher
rates than currently practised by district farmers are that systems of animal
production with a requirement for plentiful good quality pasture in spring,
such as ewes lambing in spring, should be used. The benefit of spring lambing
over autumn lambing was supported when the 2 systems were compared over 26
years using the GrassGro decision support system. Well fertilised pasture
systems will also allow more scope for conserving pasture as hay or silage,
and increase opportunities for diversification in the farming enterprise, such
as spring-growing crops.

Abstract
The response to phosphatic fertilizer of a pasture based on perennial ryegrass, subterranean clover and phalaris was assessed over 4 years. The pasture was established on a previously unfertilized area. Single superphosphate was applied at five rates. In addition there was an unfertilized treatment. The highest rate of fertilizer, expressed as elemental phosphorus (P), was reduced from 100 kg/ha in years 1 and 2 to 60 and 40 kg/ha in years 3 and 4 respectively. Each year total pasture drymatter (DM) production was measured during a 6-month growing season from early winter to late spring under four systems of defoliation: mown monthly (MI), mown every 2 months (M2), mown every 3 months (M3) or set stocked with 1 year old sheep (G). Grazed plots were stocked at 10, 14 or 18 sheep/ha in 3 of the years, and at 8.75, 12.25 or 15.75 sheep/ha during the remaining year. The production of mown pasture generally decreased with increasing frequency of cutting, and was always less than the production of grazed pasture. Mean values for MI, M2, M3 and G were 2.85, 4.35, 5.44 and 6.86 t DM/ha respectively. The absolute and marginal responses to fertilizer (kg DM/kgP) were always greater for the grazed treatments. This suggests that data from mowing trials seriously underestimate the fertilizer response of grazed systems. The amount of fertilizer required to reach a given proportion of potential yield response did not differ between the systems in the first 3 years, but in year 4, more fertilizer was required by the grazed system to reach a given proportion of potential yield (P < 0.01. Strategies for correcting the response curves of the mown treatments are considered.

Abstract
Seventy-six years of wheat yield data from a long-term rotation experiment at Dooen in the Victorian Wimmera were analysed to describe the response of wheat yield to seasonal rainfall, crop sequence, and time. Wheat yields from 7 different 1- to 4-course rotations involving wheat, barley, oat, field pea, grass pasture and fallow were compared as a function of growing-season (May-November) rainfall. The field layout had no within-year replication, but each phase of each rotation was represented once in each year. An approximate quadratic response of wheat yield to both current year and previous year May-November rainfall was observed for each rotation. Previous year May-November rainfall boosted wheat yields grown on fallow, but decreased the yield of wheat grown on field pea or wheat stubble. Highest wheat yields followed fallow preceded by pasture, high yields followed fallow preceded by a cereal, moderate yields followed field pea, and low yields occurred for continuous wheat. Long-term trends in wheat yields adjusted for rainfall depended on crop sequence and fluctuated more in the non-fallow, 3-course rotations. Over the 76 years, average yield declined in all rotations except the continuous wheat, which was always low, but there was evidence that yield of all continuous cropped rotations had increased during the last 2 decades.

Abstract
Self-reported histories of hay fever and asthma were obtained from 3,808 pairs of adult twins 18 years and over registered with the Australian National Health Medical Research Council Twin Registry (1232 MZF, 567 MZM, 751 DZF, 352 DZM, 906 DZO). The prevalence of hay fever and asthma was 0.32 and 0.13, respectively, with little variation with zygosity, sex, and age. The associations between twin pairs for these two traits were analysed, under the assumption of constant prevalences, as a special case of a log-linear model for binary traits in pedigrees using the statistical package GLIM. The model assumption that there are no second- or higher-order interactions was tested in the 2 X 2 X 2 X 2 table of twin by disease outcomes without revealing strong evidence of departure, even in this large data set. The log-linear modelling showed that only three first-order interactions, namely 1) between hay fever in a twin pair, 2) asthma in a twin pair, and 3) hay fever and asthma in the same twin, were necessary to describe the data. The first two interaction terms were significantly larger in identical pairs; the third was independent of zygosity. Under this parsimonious model, there was a significant difference between identical and fraternal pairs in marginal correlation, both in asthma and hay fever, and in the cross-correlation between hay fever in one twin and asthma in the other. This suggests that genetic factors are implicated in both hay fever and asthma and that some of these genetic factors are common (at least among a subgroup of individuals) to both traits.

Abstract
Autoradiographic labelling using tritiated thymidine ([3H]TdR) was used to examine the pattern of development of gastric parietal cells in newborn pigs. Specific objectives were to establish sites in the gland where cells with a characteristic parietal cell morphology first appear, the extent of their migration or displacement, and the kinetics of any development and migration that occurs. Five newly-born littermate piglets were given a virtually continuous label of [3H]TdR over 24 hr, sacrificed at 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 days thereafter, and samples of the gastric mucosa taken. The percentage of labelled parietal cells as a function of position in the oxyntic gland was measured for each pig. A generalized log linear model was fitted to the data using the statistical package GLIM, confirming a significant trend for labelled cells to occupy higher sites in the oxyntic gland as the time since labelling of cells increased. Goodness of fit tests showed that the trend effect was highly unlikely to be due to the variability of cell distribution from animal to animal. The dynamics of the parietal cell population and the strengths of GLIM for analysing cell labelling data are discussed.

Abstract
In a 3-centre study involving 144 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a relationship between side effects from D-penicillamine and HLA antigens, allotypic markers of the IgG heavy chain (Gm) and allotypes of complement components Bf, C4A and C4B was sought. There was a significant association between proteinuria induced by D-penicillamine and the antigens DR3 and B8. However, the presence of DR2 seemed to protect against the development of proteinuria. Thrombocytopenia from D-penicillamine was significantly associated with HLA-A1 and DR4; 15 of 23 patients who possessed both antigens developed thrombocytopenia (p less than 0.001 uncorrected, approximate relative risk (RR) = 5.5). A null complement allele located at the C4B locus (C4BQO) was also associated with thrombocytopenia from D-penicillamine (p less than 0.005, RR = 17.3). Our study confirms the findings from other series which indicate that there is a genetic predisposition for the development of proteinuria from D-penicillamine in RA and suggests that this may also be the case in D-penicillamine induced thrombocytopenia.

Abstract
Analysis of atherogenic risk factors in 493 Maltese-born residents of Melbourne showed that after adjustment for the effects of age, fasting plasma insulin was the only factor with a highly significant (p = less than 0.001) association with electrocardiogram abnormalities suggestive of atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. Absence of peripheral arterial pulses was not correlated with abnormal electrocardiogram but was significantly associated with both age and smoking. Elevation of plasma insulin appears to be a significant risk factor for atherosclerotic heart disease.

Abstract
Twin concordance rates for a binary trait can provide information about causes of trait variation. However, if trait prevalence varies with age (or birth cohort) or between the sexes, trait concordance rates will be artificially inflated because of the matching within pairs of twins. Our previous paper showed how to minimize the effects of such confounding by using logistic regression to model trait prevalence as a function of age and sex and that the binary correlation coefficient was useful as a measure of concordance that can be adjusted for trait prevalence. This method is extended here to allow for nested analyses and is applied to the smoking habits of a sample of 3,807 pairs of adult twins. For monozygotic (MZ) twins, the correlation coefficients for the binary trait of "ever-smoking" (males: .50 +/- .04; females: .60 +/- .02) were significantly greater than for dizygotic (DZ) twins (males: .37 +/- .05; females: .31 +/- .04; unlike-sex pairs: .21 +/- .03). For "giving-up smoking," given that both twins were previously smokers, the correlations for MZ twins (males: .37 +/- .07; females: .29 +/- .05) were also greater than for DZ twins (males: .11 +/- .09; females: .26 +/- .08; unlike-sex pairs: .13 +/- .06), although the difference was not statistically significant for females. Current smokers who had been smoking for at least 10 years were arbitrarily defined as "committed-smokers." The binary trait of "committed-smoking" was more strongly correlated in MZ twins (males: .41 +/- .06; females: .41 +/- .04) than in DZ twins (males: .22 +/- .08; females: .18 +/- .05; unlike-sex pairs: .16 +/- .05). These observations suggest that as well as depending on socially determined environmental factors, smoking behavior is influenced by genetic factors and/or by environmental factors unique to the MZ twin environment, which are of particular importance as determinants of "committed-smoking." There is a need for further research to investigate the personal characteristics of "committed-smokers" and to seek intervention strategies that are more suited to the needs of individual smokers.

Abstract
The effect of ACTH administration on urinary kallikrein excretion and its relationship to changes in plasma and urine electrolytes, renin concentration and steroids was examined in normotensive and mildly hypertensive subjects. ACTH administration produced hypokalaemia, initial urinary sodium retention, a fall in active plasma renin concentration, a transient rise in plasma aldosterone concentration and sustained rises in plasma deoxycorticosterone concentration and urinary kallikrein activity. Changes in patients with mild hypertension were similar in pattern to normotensives, but urinary kallikrein concentrations were lower. The effects of ACTH on urinary kallikrein excretion appeared to be independent of aldosterone and correlated most closely with deoxycorticosterone concentrations.

Abstract
A flexible method based on maximum likelihood theory is introduced for the analysis of binary response data in twins. The method allows for explanatory variables such as age and sex, is free of the untestable distributional assumption of bivariate normality of liability, and makes more efficient use of the data available. The method is illustrated with preliminary data on drinking status in adult twins. Although there is some bias in the ascertainment of male dizygous twins, the results suggest that monozygous twins are more concordant than dizygous twins for drinking status.
