Impact of organic matter molecular weight on hexavalent chromium enrichment in green microalgae

In lightly polluted water containing heavy metals, organic matter, and green microalgae, the molecular weight of organic matter may influence both the growth of green microalgae and the concentration of heavy metals. This study elucidates the effects and mechanisms by which different molecular weight fractions of fulvic acid (FA), a model dissolved organic matter component, facilitate the bioaccumulation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in a typical green alga, Chlorella vulgaris. Findings show that the addition of FA fractions with molecular weights greater than 10 kDa significantly enhances the enrichment of total chromium and Cr(VI) in algal cells, reaching 21.58%-31.09 % and 16.17 %-22.63 %, respectively. Conversely, the efficiency of chromium enrichment in algal cells was found to decrease with decreasing molecular weight of FA. FA molecular weight within the range of 0.22 µm-30 kDa facilitated chromium enrichment primarily through the algal organic matter (AOM) pathway, with minor contributions from the algal cell proliferation and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) pathways. However, with decreasing FA molecular weight, the AOM and EPS pathways become less prominent, whereas the algal cell proliferation pathway becomes dominant. These findings provide new insights into the mechanism of chromium enrichment in green algae enhanced by medium molecular weight FA.

Novel adaptive activated sludge process leverages flow fluctuations for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in rural sewage treatment

The fluctuating characteristics of rural sewage flow pose a significant challenge for wastewater treatment plants, leading to poor effluent quality. This study establishes a novel adaptive activated sludge (AAS) process specifically designed to address this challenge. By dynamically adjusting to fluctuating water flow in situ, the AAS maintains system stability and promotes efficient pollutant removal. The core strategy of AAS leverages the inherent dissolved oxygen (DO) variations caused by flow fluctuations to establish an alternating anoxic-aerobic environment within the system. This alternating operation mode fosters the growth of aerobic denitrifiers, enabling the simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) process. Over a 284-day operational period, the AAS achieved consistently high removal efficiencies, reaching 94 % for COD and 62.8 % for TN. Metagenomics sequencing revealed HN-AD bacteria as the dominant population, with the characteristic nap gene exhibiting a high relative abundance of 0.008 %, 0.010 %, 0.014 %, and 0.015 % in the anaerobic, anoxic, dynamic, and oxic zones, respectively. Overall, the AAS process demonstrates efficient pollutant removal and low-carbon treatment of rural sewage by transforming the disadvantage of flow fluctuation into an advantage for robust DO regulation. Thus, AAS offers a promising model for SND in rural sewage treatment.

Evolution of water quality in rainwater harvesting systems during long-term storage in non-rainy seasons

The development of rainwater utilization strategies has relied on rainwater harvesting (RWH) systems for centuries to alleviate the pressure on water resources. However, there are still significant knowledge gaps regarding the changes in water quality in RWH systems during long-term storage in non-rainy seasons. This study evaluated the water quality processes in RWH systems through static rainwater storage experiments for approximately 60 days. The results revealed that nutrients in rainwater accumulated in sediment during storage. Disturbance and redox conditions at the rainwater-sediment interface contribute to the release of sedimentary facies materials. The rainwater showed distinct DO stratification, with the biochemical reactions of sedimentary facies being the primary factor driving oxygen consumption. ORP and turbidity showed positive correlations with COD (r = 0.582; 0.572), TOC (r = 0.678; 0.681), TN (r = 0.452; 0.439), and NH4+-N (r = 0.502; 0.553) (P < 0.05). The regulation of water quality and extension of the usage cycle were identified as critical factors influenced by DO. In addition, bacteria share similar ecological niche preferences. These findings provide scientific evidence for the high-quality reuse of rainwater in decentralized RWH systems during long-term storage in non-rainy seasons.

Nitrogen removal efficiency and mechanisms of an improved anaerobic-anoxic-oxic system for decentralized sewage treatment

The unstable operation and poor effluent quality often associated with decentralized sewage treatment systems due to fluctuating water flows have garnered significant attention. In this study, a novel integrated process combining anoxic denitrification and simultaneous nitrification and denitrification was developed to address these challenges. The improved anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic system achieved average effluent concentrations of 20.83 mg/L and 4.63 mg/L for chemical oxygen demand and NH4+-N, with average removal rates of 91 % and 68 %, respectively. Moreover, the aerobic zone demonstrated an impressive efficiency of 40.8 % for simultaneous nitrification and denitrification. The key bacteria groups driving the system's performance were heterotrophic and aerobic nitrifying bacteria, which dominated the microbial populations. Overall, the system optimizes the traditional anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic process, providing an effective solution for fluctuating wastewater flows. It establishes a successful coexistence model for multiple microbial populations, highlighting its applicability for superior nitrogen removal performance, and reference for optimizing rural sewage treatment. A novel carbon emission evaluation model for anaerobic-anoxic-oxic urban sewage treatment

The proposal of the dual carbon goal and the blue economy in China has sparked a keen interest in carbon emissions reduction from sewage treatment. Carbon accounting in urban sewage plants serves as the foundation for carbon emission reduction in sewage treatment. This paper re-evaluated carbon accounting in the operational processes for urban sewage treatment plants to develop a novel carbon emission evaluation model for anaerobic-anoxic-oxic treatment plants. The results show that the carbon emissions generated by non-carbon dioxide gases far exceed the carbon emissions from carbon dioxide alone. Moreover, the recycling of sewage leads to carbon emissions reduction that offsets the carbon emissions generated during the operation of the sewage plant. Also, the carbon emissions generated by sewage treatment plants are lower than those generated by untreated sewage. The findings and insights provided in this paper provide valuable references for carbon accounting and the implementation of low-carbon practices in urban sewage treatment plants.

Biochar facilitates methanogens evolution by enhancing extracellular electron transfer to boost anaerobic digestion of swine manure under ammonia stress

This study explored the mechanisms by which biochar mitigates ammonia inhibition in anaerobic digestion (AD) of swine manure. Findings show 2-8 g/L exogenous ammonia dosages gradually inhibited AD, leading to decreases in the efficiencies of hydrolysis, acidogenesis and methanogenesis by 3.4-70.8%, 6.0-82.0%, and 4.9-93.8%, respectively. However, biochar addition mitigated this inhibition and facilitated methane production. Biochar enhanced microbial activities related to electron transport and extracellular electron transfer. Moreover, biochar primarily enriched Methanosarcina, which, consequently, upregulated the genes encoding formylmethanofuran dehydrogenase and methenyltetrahydromethanopterin cyclohydrolase for the CO2-reducing methanogenesis pathway by 26.9-40.8%. It is believed that biochar mediated direct interspecies electron transfer between syntrophic partners, thereby enhancing methane production under ammonia stress. Interestingly, biochar removal did not significantly impact the AD performance of the acclimated microbial community. This indicated the pivotal role of biochar in triggering methanogen evolution to mitigate ammonia stress rather than the indispensable function after the enrichment of ammonia-resistance methanogen.

First flush stormwater pollution in urban catchments: A review of its characterization and quantification towards optimization of control measures

Identification, quantification, and control of First-Flush (FF) are considered extremely crucial in urban stormwater management. This paper reviews the methods for FF phenomenon identification, characteristics of pollutants flushes, technologies for FF pollution control, and the relationships among these factors. It further discusses FF quantification methods and optimization of control measures, aiming to reveal directions for future studies on FF management. Results showed that statistical analyses and Runoff Pollutographs Applying Curve (RPAC) fitting modelling of wash-off processes are the most applicable FF identification methods currently available. Furthermore, deep insights into the pollutant mass flushing of roof runoff may be a critical approach to characterizing FF stormwater. Finally, a novel strategy for FF control is established comprising multi-stage objectives, coupling LID/BMPs optimization schemes and Information Feedback (IF) mechanisms, aiming towards its application for the management of urban stormwater at the watershed scale.

Enhanced nutrient removal in agro-industrial wastes-amended hybrid floating treatment wetlands treating real sewage: Laboratory microcosms to field-scale studies

The use of natural agro-industrial materials as suspended fillers (SFs) in floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) to enhance nutrient removal performance has recently been gaining significant attention. However, the knowledge concerning the nutrient removal performance enhancement by different SFs (alone and in mixtures) and the major removal pathways is so far inadequate. The current research, for the first time, carried out a critical analysis using five different natural agro-industrial materials (biochar, zeolite, alum sludge, woodchip, flexible solid packing) as SFs in various FTWs of 20 L microcosm tanks, 450 L outdoor mesocosms, and a field-scale urban pond treating real wastewater over 180 d. The findings demonstrated that the incorporation of SFs in FTWs enhanced the removal performance of total nitrogen (TN) by 20-57% and total phosphorus (TP) by 23-63%. SFs further enhanced macrophyte growth and biomass production, leading to considerable increases in nutrient standing stocks. Although all the hybrid FTWs showed acceptable treatment performances, FTWs set up with mixtures of all five SFs significantly enhanced biofilm formation and enriched the abundances of the microbial community related to nitrification and denitrification processes, supporting the detected excellent N retention. N mass balance assessment demonstrated that nitrification-denitrification was the major N removal pathway in reinforced FTWs, and the high removal efficiency of TP was attributable to the incorporation of SFs into the FTWs. Nutrient removal efficiencies ranked in the following order among the various trials: microcosm scale (TN: 99.3% and TP: 98.4%) > mesocosm scale (TN: 84.0% and TP: 95.0%) > field scale (TN: -15.0-73.7% and TP: -31.5-77.1%). These findings demonstrate that hybrid FTWs could be easily scaled up for the removal of pollutants from eutrophic freshwater systems over the medium term in an environmentally-friendly way in regions with similar environmental conditions. Moreover, it demonstrates hybrid FTW as a novel way of disposing of significant quantities of wastes, showing a win-win means with a huge potential for large-scale application.

An updated review of the efficacy of buffer zones in warm/temperate and cold climates: Insights into processes and drivers of nutrient retention

The transport of excess nutrients into freshwater systems constitutes a serious risk to both water quality and aquatic health. Vegetated buffer zones (VBZs) next to waterways are increasingly used in many parts of the world to successfully intercept and eliminate pollutants and other materials in overland flow, especially in warm or temperate regions. The major processes for the retention of pollutants in VBZ are microbial degradation, infiltration, deposition, filtration, adsorption, degradation, assimilation, etc. The effectiveness of the VBZ relies on several environmental factors, including BZ width, runoff intensity, slope, soil texture, temperature, vegetation type, etc. Among the reported factors, cold weather possesses the most detrimental impact on many of the processes that VBZ are designed to carry out. The freezing temperatures result in ice formation, interrupting biological activity, infiltration and sorption, etc. In the last twenty years, burgeoning research has been carried out on the reduction of diffuse nutrient pollution losses from agricultural lands using VBZ. Nonetheless, a dearth of studies has dealt with the problems and concerns in cold climates, representing an important knowledge gap in this area. In addition, the effectiveness of VBZ in terms of nutrient removal abilities varies from -136% to 100%, a range that reveals the incertitude surrounding the role of VBZ in cold regions. Moreover, frozen soils and plants may release nutrients after undergoing several freeze-thaw cycles followed by runoff events in spring snowmelt. This review suggests that the management and design of VBZ in cold climates needs close examination, and these systems might not frequently serve as a good management approach to decrease nutrient movement.

New conceptualization and quantification method of first-flush in urban catchments: A modelling study

A major challenge for runoff pollution control lies in the quantification and identification of the first-flush. At present, there is a lack of reasonable theoretical methods to guide engineering practices. To remedy this deficiency, a novel method of cumulative pollutant mass vs. cumulative runoff volume (M(V)) curve simulation is proposed in this study. Subsequently, the first-flush phenomenon was redefined based on the M(V) curve simulation and demonstrate that the first-flush exists until the derivative of the simulated M(V) curve is equal to 1 (F_t' = 1). Consequently, a mathematical model for first-flush quantification was developed. The Root-Mean-Square-Deviation (RMSD) and Pearson's Correlation Coefficient (PCC), as objective functions, were used to evaluate the performance of the model and the Elementary-Effect (EE) method was used to analyze the sensitivity of the parameters. The results indicated the satisfactory accuracy of the M(V) curve simulation and first-flush quantitative mathematical model. The NSE values exceeding 0.8 and 0.938, respectively, were obtained by analyzing 19 rainfall-runoff data for Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, China. The wash-off coefficient "r" was demonstrably the most sensitive factor influencing the model performance. Therefore, interactions between "r" and the other model parameters should be focused on to highlight the overall sensitivities. Overall, this study posits a novel paradigm shift from the traditional dimensionless definition criterion to redefine and quantify first-flush, which has significant implications for urban water environment management.

Acceptable risk assessment and management of environmental pollution emergency events base on distance model

Existing environmental management regulations and assessment methods can help understand and relieve pollution problems greatly affecting the natural world. However, what is lacking is awareness and targeted recommendations for environmental pollution emergency events (EPEEs). Here we analyzed a total of 2164 EPEEs in China from 2000 to 2021 in terms of annual variations, spatial distributions, phases of regional development, and pollution sources. The findings showed that regional economies can have significant impacts on the occurrence of EPEEs. Regarding the four causes of pollution, the contribution from industrial sources was above 80 %, especially water pollution events, for which it accounted for 84 %. The probability of pollution events specifically relates to regional GDP and it was highest in those provinces with the highest GDP rankings, albeit there were marked differences in the industrial structure. In order to better manage EPEEs, an Environment-Emergency Distance Model (EEDM) is proposed. This model uses the Multidimensional psychological distance to quantitatively evaluate the acceptable public risk level after the occurrence of EPEEs. This method provides a basis for pollution prevention and remediation by visualizing the risk acceptable for the public and provides guidance for sustainable environmental development.

Vegetated urban streams have sufficient purification ability but high internal nutrient loadings: Microbial communities and nutrient release dynamics

The release of nutrients back into the water column due to macrophyte litter decay could offset the benefits of nutrient removal by hydrophytes within urban streams. However, the influence of this internal nutrient cycling on the overlying water quality and bacterial community structure is still an open question. Hence, litter decomposition trials using six hydrophytes, Typha latifolia (TL), Phragmites australis (PAU), Hydrilla verticillata (HV), Oenanthe javanica (OJ), Myriophyllum aquaticum (MA), and Potamogeton crispus (PC), were performed using the litterbag approach to mimic a 150-day plant litter decay in sediment-water systems. Field assessment using simple in/out mass balances and uptake by plant species was carried out to show the potential for phytoremediation and its mechanisms. Results from two years of monitoring (2020-2021) indicated mean total nitrogen (TN) retention efficiencies of 7.2-60.14 % and 9.5-55.6 % for total phosphorus (TP) in the studied vegetated urban streams. Nutrient retention efficiencies showed temporal variations, which depended on seasonal temperature. Mass balance analysis indicated that macrophyte assimilation, sediment adsorption, and microbial transformation accounted for 10.31-41.74 %, 0.84-3.00 %, and 6.92-48.24 % removal of the inlet TN loading, respectively. Hydrophyte detritus decay induced alterations in physicochemical parameters while significantly increasing the N and P levels in the overlying water and sediment. Decay rates varied among macrophytes in the order of HV (0.00436 g day^-1) > MA (0.00284 g day^-1) > PC (0.00251 g day^-1) > OJ (0.00135 g day^-1) > TL (0.00095 g day^-1) > PAU (0.00057 g day^-1). 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis showed an increase in microbial species richness and diversity in the early phase of litter decay. The abundances of denitrification (nirS and nirK) and nitrification (AOA and AOB) genes also increased in the early stage and then decreased during the decay process. Results of this study conducted in seven urban streams in northern China demonstrate the direct effects of hydrophytes in encouraging nutrient transformation and stream self-purification. Results also demonstrate that macrophyte detritus decay could drive not only the nutrient conversions but also the microbial community structure and activities in sediment-water systems. Consequently, to manage internal sources and conversions of nutrients, hydrophytic detritus (e.g., floating/submerged macrophytes) must be suppressed and harvested.

A sediment diagenesis model on sediment oxygen demand in managing eutrophication on Taihu, China

Blue-green algae (CyanoHABs), photosynthetic bacteria that create a harmful aquatic environment, have been a trending issue on Taihu for over a decade. CyanoHABs adapt to varying climatic changes, which explains why the problem on Taihu still thrives. One major drive that keeps the algae is Sediment Oxygen Demand (SOD). In this paper, seasonal and spatial variations of SOD that contribute immensely to nutrient growth in Lake Taihu were done using the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC). The results were analyzed based on Nitrogenous SOD (NSOD) and Total SOD (TSOD). Summer results ranged from - 0.05754 to - 0.0826 (- 0.75658 to - 0.83902) (g/m²/day) and Winter values ranged from - 0.3022 to - 0.40171 (- 1.34486 to - 1.48856) (g/m²/day) indicate a gradual decrease in NSOD (TSOD) values respectively. Relatively higher values in summer are attributed to warmer surface water which sets up thermal stratification to increase the internal loading of nitrogen. Lower winter values are related to inverse stratification, where lower oxygen concentration decreases the SOD to trigger ammonium accumulation in the water column. NSOD (TSOD) values for Autumn results ranged from - 0.1039 to - 0.24786 (- 0.96251 to - 1.39454) (g/m²/day) and Spring values of - 0.43019 to - 0.35959 (- 1.48297 to - 0.54089) (g/m²/day). Transition seasons (i.e., Autumn and Spring) results are impacted by wind mixing that allows dissolved oxygen and nutrients in the whole water column. However, spring values depict a gradual increase in SOD value attributed to spring turnover and gradual stratification, which decrease nutrient concentration. In contrast, decreasing SOD values in autumn are related to mixing, but temperature decreases tend to increase nutrient concentrations. Carbonaceous sediment oxygen demand (CSOD), due to sulfide oxidation, presents high values from the difference between TSOD and NSOD. Based on the high values of CSOD, it is highly recommended that more research on eutrophic Taihu lakes would consider delving into CSOD.

A new paradigm of sewage collection in rural areas

Rural sewage collection networks play extremely important roles in rural sewage treatment, and the lack of a suitable collection model makes this task difficult. Hence, there is an urgent need to develop a new method to collect and deal with rural sewage. This paper establishes a rural sewage optimal collection model (RSOCM) with critical distance (d) and sewage quota per unit area (q_s) as the constraint factors. The implementation of critical distance for rural sewage collection pipeline networks was demonstrated for 38 rural areas in the Huicheng District, Huizhou City, Guangdong Province of China. The average critical distances of 22 m, 38 m, 29 m, 29 m, 41 m, and 55 m were demonstrated for Sandong Town, Ma'an Town, Luzhou Town, Ruhu Town, Hengli Town, and Shuikou Subdistrict, respectively. The q_s is used to create the best possible pipe network layout, determine the appropriate treatment method, and reduce construction costs. This model can be widely applied to sewage collection in rural areas of China, where the overall sewage collection system can implement different regional strategies to maximize rural pollution control and protect the environment.

Removal of pharmaceutical active compounds in wastewater by constructed wetlands: Performance and mechanisms

The occurrence of pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) in aquatic environments is a cause for concern due to potential adverse effects on human and ecosystem health. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are cost-efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment systems for the removal of these PhACs. The removal processes and mechanisms comprise a complex interplay of photodegradation, biodegradation, phytoremediation, and sorption. This review synthesized the current knowledge on CWs for the removal of 20 widely detected PhACs in wastewater. In addition, the major removal mechanisms and influencing factors are discussed, enabling comprehensive and critical understanding for optimizing the removal of PhACs in CWs. Consequently, potential strategies for intensifying CWs system performance for PhACs removal are discussed. Overall, the results of this review showed that CWs performance in the elimination of some pharmaceuticals was on a par with conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and, for others, it was above par. Furthermore, the findings indicated that system design, operational, and environmental factors played important but highly variable roles in the removal of pharmaceuticals. Nonetheless, although CWs were proven to be a more cost-efficient and sustainable technology for pharmaceuticals removal than other engineered treatment systems, there were still several research gaps to be addressed, mainly including the fate of a broad range of emerging contaminants in CWs, identification of specific functional microorganisms, transformation pathways of specific pharmaceuticals, assessment of transformation products and the ecotoxicity evaluation of CWs effluents.

Spontaneous FeIII/FeII redox cycling in single-atom catalysts: Conjugation effect and electron delocalization

The mechanism of spontaneous Fe^III/Fe^II redox cycling in iron-centered single-atom catalysts (I-SACs) is often overlooked. Consequently, pathways for continuous SO₄ ^·-/HO⋅ generation during peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation by I-SACs remain unclear. Herein, the evolution of the iron center and ligand in I-SACs was comprehensively investigated. I-SACs could be considered as a coordination complex created by iron and a heteroatom N-doped carbonaceous ligand. The ligand-field theory could well explain the electronic behavior of the complex, whereby electrons delocalized by the conjugation effect of the ligand were confirmed to be responsible for the Fe^III/Fe^II redox cycle. The possible pyridinic ligand in I-SACs was demonstrably weaker than the pyrrolic ligand in Fe^III reduction due to its shielding effect on delocalized π orbitals by local lone-pair electrons. The results of this study significantly advance our understanding of the mechanism of spontaneous Fe^III/Fe^II redox cycling and radical generation pathways in the I-SACs/PMS process.

Photochemical behavior of constructed wetlands-derived dissolved organic matter and its effects on Bisphenol A photodegradation in secondary treated wastewater

Free water surface flow (FWS) constructed wetlands (CWs) have been broadly applied for polishing secondary treated effluents. Dissolved organic matter derived from FWS CWs (WDOM) plays key roles in contaminants transformations. Conversely, photodegradation could shape the quantity and quality of WDOM, thereby affecting its roles in the photolysis of organic micropollutants (OMPs). Nevertheless, whether and how solar irradiation-induced photodegradation modify the properties of WDOM, and the effects of WDOM on the photodegradation of OMPs remain unclear. This study elucidates the photochemical behavior of two WDOM isolated from field-scale FWS CWs for effluent polishing under simulated sunlight irradiation using spectroscopic tools and high-resolution mass spectra. Furthermore, the roles of WDOM in the photodegradation of Bisphenol A (BPA), as a representative endocrine-disrupting compound (EDC), were comprehensively investigated. Solar irradiation was demonstrated to lower the molecular weight and aromaticity of WDOM, as well as weaken its light absorption. Ultrahigh-resolution mass spectra further confirmed that aromatic and unsaturated structures were susceptible to solar irradiation-induced photodegradation reactions. Subsequently, less aromatic and more saturated structures eventually formed under sunlight irradiation, consistent with the result from spectroscopic characterization. The reactive species produced from WDOM significantly enhanced the photodegradation of BPA with the k_obs noticeably increasing 4-fold compared with the k_obs for direct photolysis. Additionally, ³WDOM* was identified as the dominant reactive species leading to the photolysis of BPA in the presence of WDOM. These findings improve understanding of the phototransformation behavior of WDOM under sunlight irradiation and the roles that WDOM plays in the photochemical fate of coexisting OMPs in CWs treatment systems.

Enantioselectivity and mechanisms of chiral herbicide biodegradation in hydroponic systems

This study demonstrates the enantioselective removal dynamics and mechanisms of the chiral herbicide metolachlor in a hydroponic system of Phragmites australis. It presents the first work to elucidate plant-microbial driven enantioselective degradation processes of chiral chemicals. The results showed a degradation efficiency of up to 95.07 ± 2.81% in the hydroponic system driven by a notably high degradation rate constant of 0.086 d^-1. P. australis was demonstrated to rapidly increase the contribution of biodegradation pathways in the hydroponic system to 82.21 ± 4.81% within 4 d with an enantiomeric fraction (EF) drop to 0.26 ± 0.02 to favour the enantioselective degradation of S-Metolachlor (k_{S-Metolachlor} = 0.568 d^-1 and k_{R-Metolachlor} = 0.147 d^-1). Comparatively, the biodegradation pathways in the control constituted less than 25%, with an EF value of circa 0.5. However, the enantioselective biodegradation pathways exhibited complete reversal after about 4 d to favour R-Metolachlor. Plants promoted the degradation of R-Metolachlor, evidenced by an increase in EF to 0.59 ± 0.03. Nonetheless, metolachlor showed an inhibitory effect on plants reflected by the reduction of plant growth rate, chlorophyll content, and electron transport rate to -7.85 ± 1.52%, 1.33 ± 0.43 mg g^-1, 4.03 ± 1.33 μmol (m² s)^-1, respectively. However, rhizosphere microorganisms aided plants to catalyze excessive reactive oxygen species production by the antioxidant enzymes to protect plants from oxidative damage and restore their physiological activities. High-throughput analysis of microbial communities demonstrated the enrichment of Massilia (40.63%) and Pseudomonas (8.16%) in the initial stage to promote the rapid degradation of S-Metolachlor. By contrast, the proliferation of Brevundimonas (32.29%) and Pseudarthrobacter (11.03%) in the terminal stage was closely associated with the degradation of R-Metolachlor. Moreover, as symbiotic bacteria of plants, these bacteria aided plants protection from reactive oxygen damages and promoted the recovery of plant metabolic functions and photosynthesis. Overall, these results demonstrate biodegradation mediated by plant-microbe mechanisms as the main driver for the enantioselective degradation of metolachlor in hydroponic systems.

Integrated environmental influences quantification of pilot-scale constructed wetlands based on modified ecological footprint assessment

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely used for non-point source pollution control and water environmental quality improvement. Though it is effective in water quality improvement under most conditions, the overall impacts on the ecological environment in terms of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions is a growing concern. Besides, large area requirement has limited further applications of the technology in urban areas. A novel assessment tool of integrating grey water footprint into the ecological footprint framework is established for the assessment of pilot-scale CWs. Findings are compared with a natural riparian wetland adjacent to the researched CWs which were monitored simultaneously. Results demonstrated the CWs had relatively good water quality polishing performance, especially for nitrogen removal. Nonetheless, a large amount of CO₂ and some CH₄ and N₂O emissions were recorded. Meanwhile, a substantial amount of CO₂ was also sequestrated by wetland plants via photosynthesis. The strong reducing environment of the CWs inhibited CO₂ and N₂O generation to a great extent. Calculation of all gaseous emissions and sequestration in CO₂ equivalents demonstrated that CWs are an efficient carbon sink. By contrast, the natural wetland was a carbon source because of the high emission of CO₂ and N₂O under its weak reducing environment conditions and low gross primary production. The carbon footprints of the constructed and natural wetlands were -24.24 and 12.99 gha respectively. Modified ecological footprint values were determined by integrating the carbon footprint, water footprint and build-up lands footprint, and a value of -24.36 gha was obtained for the CWs and 12.99 gha for the natural wetlands. The results indicated that the CWs had substantial beneficial impacts on the ecological environment. On account of the multifunctional service values provided by the CWs, a typical paradigm for water pollution remediation and carbon sequestration was presented for ecological and environmental governance, especially for riparian areas.

Performance of various fillers in ecological floating beds planted with Myriophyllum aquaticum treating municipal wastewater

The performance of different suspended fillers (zeolite, drinking water treatment residual, biochar, woodchip and stereo-elastic packing) and their combinations in treating municipal wastewater in ecological floating beds (Eco-FBs) planted with Myriophyllum aquaticum was assessed. Six sets of enhanced Eco-FBs were developed to assess the individual and synergistic effects of combinations of the various fillers and microorganisms on nutrient elimination. The results demonstrated mean TN, NH₄-N, TP and COD purification efficiencies of 99.2 ± 11.2 %, 99.82 ± 16.4 %, 98.3 ± 14.3 %, and 96.1 ± 12.3 %, respectively in the Eco-FBs strengthened with all five fillers. The corresponding purification rates were 0.89 ± 0.14, 0.75 ± 0.12, 0.08 ± 0.016, and 7.05 ± 1.09 g m^-2 d^-1, which were 2-3 times higher than those of the conventional Eco-FB system. High-throughput sequencing showed that some genera related to nutrient transformation, including Proteobacteria (24.13-51.95 %), followed by Chloroflexi (5.64-25.01 %), Planctomycetes (8.48-14.43 %) and Acidobacteria (2.29-11.65 %), were abundantly enriched in the strengthened Eco-FBs. Enhancement of the Eco-FBs with various fillers significantly increased microbial species richness and diversity as demonstrated by Chao1, Shannon and Simpson's indexes, particularly when all the five fillers were combined. Therefore, introducing suspended fillers into Eco-FBs is an appropriate approach for improving nutrient elimination from municipal wastewater.

Assessment of plants radial oxygen loss for nutrients and organic matter removal in full-scale constructed wetlands treating municipal effluents

Bidirectional cross flow wetlands with different plant species were set to investigate seasonal variation in radial oxygen loss (ROL) and its effects on COD and NH₄⁺-N removal. Findings demonstrated a strong seasonal effect on the rate of ROL, with Arundo donax var.versicolor showing the highest ROL of 2.99 μmol·h^-1·g^-1. Additionally, ROL showed strong positive correlations with plant total biomass (P < 0.01), aboveground biomass (P < 0.01), height, maximum root length (P < 0.01), root porosity (P < 0.01), and removal efficiency of COD and NH₄⁺-N (P < 0.01). Furthermore, high-throughput sequencing analysis of substrate samples from three wetland units planted with Thalia dealbata, Canna indica and Arundo donax var. versicolor revealedProteobacteria as the predominant rhizospheric phylum. Relative abundance of Alpha- and Gamma-Proteobacteria were higher in the Arundo donax var.versicolor samples due to its higher oxygen transport capacity. These results demonstrate that root properties are important determinants for selecting appropriate plants for constructed wetland.

A novel multi-objective optimization framework for urban green-gray infrastructure implementation under impacts of climate change

Frequent urban flooding disasters can cause severe economic and property losses. Accordingly, the construction of sponge city has become critical to alleviating urban flooding. However, the functional and structural integration of Green Infrastructure (GI) and Gray Drainage Facility (GDF) is still a matter of concern. This study proposed a novel implementation framework for GI and GDF synchronization optimization (G-GSOIF) based on the SWMM and SUSTAIN models, and used data from Beilin District in Xi'an, China to verify the effects. The results show that the spatiotemporal integrated optimization design of GI and GDF proves to be effective in stormwater management. The total investment was reduced by 16.7% and economic benefit was increased by 15.4% based on disaster risk control, and the utilization rate of rainwater resources exceeded 40%. The Staged optimization model (SSOM) based on the SUSTAIN model established in the G-GSOIF was demonstrated to effectively cope with the impact of future climate change by adjusting and optimizing the design scheme dynamically in different simulation scenarios. Integrated LID (I-LID) measures are conducive for simulation of large catchment areas, and have the same implementation effect as distributed LID measures. The results of this study could support decision-making for urban stormwater management and sponge city construction.

Microbial community and carbon-nitrogen metabolism pathways in integrated vertical flow constructed wetlands treating wastewater containing antibiotics

This study demonstrates effects of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) on carbon-nitrogen transformation pathways and microbial community and metabolic function response mechanisms in constructed wetlands. Findings showed co-metabolism of SMX with organic pollutants resulted in high removal of 98.92 ± 0.25% at influent concentrations of 103.08 ± 13.70 μg/L (SMX) and 601.92 ± 22.69 mg/L (COD), and 2 d hydraulic retention. Microbial community, co-occurrence networks, and metabolic pathways analyses showed SMX promoted enrichment of COD and SMX co-metabolizing bacteria like Mycobacterium, Chryseobacterium and Comamonas. Relative abundances of co-metabolic pathways like Amino acid, carbohydrate, and Xenobiotics biodegradation and metabolism were elevated. SMX also increased relative abundances of the resistant heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification bacteria Paracoccus and Comamonas and functional genes nxrA, narI, norC and nosZ involved in simultaneous heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification. Consequently, denitrification rate increased by 1.30 mg/(L∙d). However, insufficient reaction substrate and accumulation of 15.29 ± 2.30 mg/L NO₃^--N exacerbate inhibitory effects of SMX on expression of some denitrification genes.

Stereoselective degradation pathway of amide chiral herbicides and its impacts on plant and bacterial communities in integrated vertical flow constructed wetlands

This study demonstrates the stereoselective degradation patterns and biodegradation mechanisms of metolachlor (MET) and napropamide (NAP) in integrated vertical flow constructed wetlands (IVCW). The higher interphase transferability of NAP resulted in higher degradation rates of 90.60 ± 4.09%. The enantiomeric fraction (EF) values of 0.38 ± 0.02 and 0.54 ± 0.03, respectively, recorded for the enantiomers S-MET and R-NAP, with higher herbicidal activities, demonstrated their highly selective biodegradation patterns. The antioxidant enzyme activities and fluorescence parameters of plants showed positive correlations with the degradation efficiency and enantioselectivity of MET and NAP. Adaptive regulations by plants promoted the proliferation of microbial genera like Enterobacter and unclassified_Burkholderiales, which could facilitate plant growth. Moreover, enrichment of the herbicide-degrading functional bacteria Terrimonas (5.10%), Comamonas (4.05%) Pseudoxanthomonas (4.49%) and Mycobacterium (1.42%) demonstrably promoted the preferential degradation of S-MET and R-NAP. Furthermore, the abundance of Ferruginibacter favored the use of R-NAP as carbon source to achieve co-removal of R-NAP and NO₃^--N.

New insights into the mechanisms underlying biochar-assisted sustained high-efficient co-digestion: Reducing thermodynamic constraints and enhancing extracellular electron transfer flux

To clarify the roles of biochar in the anaerobic co-digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) and food waste (FW), batch tests were conducted coupled with thermodynamics, extracellular electron transfer flux and microbial community analysis. Compared with the control group, biochar significantly facilitated the co-digestion at three periods, but its sustainable facilitation was mainly in the syntrophic methanogenesis of volatile fatty acids (VFAs). The thermodynamic analysis confirmed that biochar could alleviate limitations imposed by high hydrogen partial pressure during interspecies hydrogen transfer (IHT), the thermodynamic windows was expanded 137% and 92% in the syntrophic methanogenesis of acetate and propionate, respectively. Meanwhile, due to the redox capacity of biochar (4.85 and 0.35 μmol e^-/g biochar), the equivalent current of direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) flux for syntrophic methanogenesis of acetate and propionate obtained were 1.0 × 10^-4 A and 0.9 × 10^-4 A, which were 10⁸ times than that of IHT. It should be noticed that the functional microorganisms like Methanosarcina which could participate DIET were only enriched on the surface of biochar, the dominant Methanothermobacter in suspended sludge probably indicate IHT was still the main pathway for syntrophic methanogenesis. Nevertheless, the DIET triggered by the redox-active moieties on the surface of biochar and the enhanced IHT by alleviating thermodynamic restrictions, promoted the syntrophic methanogenesis synergistically.

Phytoremediation mechanisms and plant eco-physiological response to microorganic contaminants in integrated vertical-flow constructed wetlands

Vegetations play a vital role in the ecological function of constructed wetlands (CW), but the systemic phytoremediation mechanism of CW is still unclear. An integrated vertical-flow constructed wetland (IVCW) was established to elucidate the phytoremediation mechanisms and plants eco-physiological response to an emerging contaminant, sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Attenuation of SMX in IVCW with and without vegetation (Acorus calamus) are comparatively analyzed. The results showed significant enhancement of removal efficiencies of total nitrogen (via intensified denitrification) and SMX by up to 10% respectively with vegetation. A unique micro-rhizo environment was created by stimulating the denitrifiers, Clostridium_sensu_stricto, Ignavibacterium, Rhodanobacter, and Geobacter. Free-living plant growth-promoting bacteria, unclassified_Burkholderiales and unclassified_Betaproteobacteria, proliferated in the rhizosphere, protecting the growth mechanism of A. calamus and, consequently, promoting performance of the IVCW. Overall, A. calamus exhibited tolerance to SMX, maintaining its photosynthesis rate and stabilizing the plant cell structure by an effective antioxidant system. The growth and defense mechanisms of A. calamus appeared to positively correlate with the IVCW performance, whereby the photosynthetic rate and antioxidant enzymes activities peaked together with the maximum removal efficiency of TN (77.81%) and SMX (99.88%). The contribution of vegetation to ecotoxicity reduction in CW might be underrated as absorbed SMX could be phytodegraded into less toxic metabolites via specific enzymes.

Environmental risk assessment by using disability adjusted life year via constructing of a generalized linear model for morbidity estimation of waterborne pathogens

The Environmental burden of disease (EBD) quantitatively evaluates the health impacts of pathogens by using the disability-adjusted life year (DALY) method. The life loss due to morbidity is a general expression for the EBD outcome and, thus, morbidity analysis is indispensable. Considering the deficiency of previous morbidity analysis methods, the objective of this study was to construct a linear morbidity model by using a generalized linear model (GLM) as a template and introducing exposure dose, pathogen toxicity and human immunity as impact variables. Human experimental data were collected for model fitting, and the results indicated a good fit of the majority of the pathogen data. Consequently, two practical cases of water reuse in Xi'an Siyuan University (Case 1) and Lake Cui, Kunming (Case 2) were selected for model validation. Results for case 1 indicated the major EBD to be attributed to rotaviruses (5.57 × 10^-7 DALYs, 95% confidence interval (CI): 4.46 × 10^-7-1.72 × 10^-4 DALYs) and sprinkling irrigation (5.12 × 10^-7 DALYs, 95% CI: 1.95 × 10^-7-1.47 × 10¹ DALYs). Conversely, that for case 2 is mainly attributed to noroviruses (1.42 × 10^-7 DALYs, 95% CI: 7.51 × 10^-11-2.67 × 10^-4 DALYs) and road flushing (1.62 × 10^-7 DALYs, 95% CI: 1.16 × 10^-7-2.67 × 10^-4 DALYs). However, comparison with the suggested threshold of 10^-6 DALYs indicated the EBDs for both cases are acceptable and, thus, water reuse is confirmed to be safe. The methodology for morbidity modelling proposed in this research can effectively compensate for missing data in DALY calculation and, thereby, help to optimize the process for EBD evaluation.

Characterization and biogeochemical implications of dissolved organic matter in aquatic environments

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is viewed as one of the most chemically active organic substances on earth. It plays vital roles in the fate, bioavailability and toxicity of aquatic exogenous chemical species (e.g., heavy metals, organic pollutants, and nanomaterials). The characteristics of DOM such low concentrations, salt interference and complexity in aquatic environments and limitations of pretreatment for sample preparation and application of characterization techniques severely limit understanding of its nature and environmental roles. This review provides a characterization continuum of aquatic DOM, and demonstrate its biogeochemical implications, enabling in-depth insight into its nature and environmental roles. A synthesis of the effective DOM pretreatment strategies, comprising extraction and fractionation methods, and characterization techniques is presented. Additionally, the biogeochemical dynamics of aquatic DOM and its environmental implications are discussed. The findings indicate the collection of representative DOM samples from water as the first and critical step for characterizing its properties, dynamics, and environmental implications. However, various pretreatment procedures may alter DOM composition and structure, producing highly variable recoveries and even influencing its subsequent characterization. Therefore, complimentary use of various characterization techniques is highly recommended to obtain as much information on DOM as possible, as each characterization technique exhibits various advantages and limitations. Moreover, DOM could markedly change the physical and chemical properties of exogenous chemical species, influencing their transformation and mobility, and finally altering their potential bioavailability and toxicity. Several research gaps to be addressed include the impact of pretreatment on the composition and structure of aquatic DOM, molecular-level structural elucidation for DOM, and assessment of the effects of DOM dynamics on the fate, bioavailability and toxicity of exogenous chemical species.

Characterization of dissolved organic matter and carbon release from wetland plants for enhanced nitrogen removal in constructed wetlands for low C-N wastewater treatment

The effects of pretreatment methods on the structure of functional groups and denitrification promotion capacity of solid carbon sources derived from reeds and cattails were elucidated. Alkaline treatment improved the relative content of carbon in the plant tissues, as well as prolonged the high denitrification rate of 0.40 mg/(L·h) from 6 days up to circa 28 days. Moreover, alkaline-heated cattails (ALH-C) showed high denitrification promotion capacity, and increased the removal rate of TN, NO₃^--N and NH₄⁺-N in the CW by 24.41%, 31.80% and 8.80%, respectively. Furthermore, the quantity, quality and migration of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from ALH-C in CW analyzed via fluorescence excitation-emission matrix spectrophotometry showed mainly humic acid-like, tyrosine-like, and tryptophan-like components. These DOM components were highly bioavailable and had minimal effects on COD removal. These results provide insights into the preparation and environmental applications of plant carbon sources.

Towards the formulation of rural sewage discharge standards in China

In China, most rural areas lack specific sewage discharge standards. Even though China governments proposed a series of local standards, the most of the existing China's rural sewage discharge standards are still similar to urban discharge standards. This research analyses comprehensively the data of rural sewage discharge standards in the 31 provinces and cities in China in terms of grade and indicator, and forms a structural framework for the formulation and revised standards in rural areas of China. In the formulation, we use 2 components, end-use and environmental capacity, to reflect local characteristics of the grades and indicators, and also propose the methods of combining discharge standards with relevant water quality standards to save energy. And we also use the mathematical model to illustrate environmental capacity in different regions. The paper shows the great potential in guiding the design of discharge standards formulation and revision for rural wastewater treatment in China and other developing countries as well.

Nutrient dynamics and retention in a vegetated drainage ditch receiving nutrient-rich sewage at low temperatures

Vegetated agricultural drainage ditches (VDs) are a relatively new best management practice for pesticide and nutrient mitigation that is receiving increasing global interest. However, VDs are seldom used during winter due to considerable deterioration of pollutants reduction efficiencies driven by low-temperature effects. Limited knowledge on the internal loading of nutrient in VDs due to vegetation decomposition calls for further evaluation. Here, we assessed plants growth characteristics and nutrient dynamics in a field-scale VD receiving nutrient-rich sewage and planted with the overwintering plants: Acorus gramineus, Myriophyllum aquaticum and Iris sibirica. Water purification performance showed average TN, NH₄-N, NO₃-N, TP and PO₄-P reduction efficiencies of 44, 46, 43, 52 and 46%, respectively, over the winter period. Maximum reduction rates of TN and TP were 5.31 and 0.34 g^-2 d^-1, respectively. Of the total nutrient removal by plants of 5.37 × 10³ kg N y^-1 and 0.65 × 10³ kg P y^-1 from the VD system, A. gramineus contributed 65.7% and 72.1%, respectively. Nonetheless, substantial amounts of N and P retained within the aboveground biomass were released into the water column as ditch plant shoots decayed to deteriorate the water quality. All three species, A. gramineus, M. aquaticum and I. sibirica demonstrated considerable nutrient accumulation during winter and facilitated nutrient retention in the VD system. Consequently, they can be considered effective overwintering species of choice in VDs for purifying nutrient-rich water and potentially appropriate for vulgarizing elsewhere, particularly throughout the winter season.

Effects of plants competition on critical bacteria selection and pollutants dynamics in a long-term polyculture constructed wetland

The effects of mix planting on the functions of plants, microorganisms, and their interactions were studied in a CW planted with Phragmites australis and Typha orientalis over six years. Findings show notable competition among plant species, with excessive overgrowth of the dominant species (P. australis) over T. orientalis. The excessive outcompeting by P. australis resulted in significantly higher plant density and biomass of 20.1 times and 11.2 times, respectively than that of T. orientalis. Interspecific competition appeared to considerably intensify plants contributions to nitrogen and phosphorus removal, which increased from circa 9% in the first year up to 42% in the sixth year. High-throughput pyrosequencing and network analyses demonstrated that the dominant species stands harbor diverse bacterial communities that could enhance the wetland performance through carbon degradation, nutrient cycling, and supporting plant growth. These results provide useful insights into the interactive effects of plants and bacteria in polyculture constructed wetlands.

Potential of invasive watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spp.) to remediate eutrophic waterbodies with organic and inorganic pollutants

Watermilfoil (Myriophyllum) is one of the world's most troublesome invasive aquatic weeds. Although current management practices may inhibit its expansion, it also impacts not only the quality of water but habitat deterioration. Therefore, the need for developing highly efficient and low-cost biotechnologies with resource recovery into the agriculture field as a complementary management strategy cannot be overstated. Here, we reviewe the scientific/grey literature to offer readers a precise and panoramic view of the invasive watermilfoil ecology, regional problems, impacts, ecosystem services, and management. In this regard, an in-depth review aimed to assess the potential for reducing non-point source inorganic and organic pollutants using invasive watermilfoil, with the sustainable approaches, while offering other services and mitigating ecological trade-offs is presented. Global distributions, growth, and current progress on the management and utilization of invasive watermilfoil biomass are summarized to develop the aim, which is to convey challenges during the implementation of large-scale weed use. In short, pollutant assimilation in plant and bacterial communities linked to this weed considerably contribute to the reduction and degradation of pollutants from both natural and artificial systems. Although several considerations in recycling and reusing biomass need to be considered, the potential reuse of the harvested material for livestock feed, compost and direct use in farming systems offer an additional strategy to achieve sustainable ecosystem restoration. Further research and development may focus on a more detailed economic modeling approach that integrates the costs (worker's wage, harvesting, transportation, and energy consumption), legal and regulatory barriers, health risks and ecosystem service benefits (biodiversity improvement, and pollutant removal) to holistically evaluate the economic, environmental, and societal value of reusing and recycling this waste material.

Integrating stereo-elastic packing into ecological floating bed for enhanced denitrification in landscape water

The effects of stereo-elastic packing, as additional bio-carriers, on nitrogen removal in enhanced ecological floating beds (EFBs) are evaluated. Enhanced EFBs with additional stereo-elastic packing was demonstrated to enhance maximum TN removal efficiency (65.8%) over that of EFBs with plant and ceramisite only (54.9%). Performance enhancement was attributable to a 40.6% increase in sediment N accretion and intensification of denitrification by biomass on other carriers in the presence of stereo-elastic packing. Nonetheless, nitrogen uptake by plants was inhibited slightly. Stereo-elastic packing intensified denitrification rates on plant roots and ceramisite by increasing the attached biomass and enhancing the biomass activity, albeit to different extents. The increase in denitrification rate on plant root by 25.7% was significantly higher than that of 4.6% on ceramisite via increased NO₂-N removal. Moreover, bacterial diversity on the carriers was significantly altered, and the enrichment of genera such as Aridibacter, Hyphomicrobium and Gemmobacter promoted denitrification processes.

Source-Associated Gastroenteritis Risk from Swimming Exposure to Aging Fecal Pathogens

Human contact with fecally contaminated waters often raises public health concern. The infection potential closely relates to the fecal source type and the aging persistence of waterborne pathogens. In this study, the health risk of contracting gastroenteritis from exposure to aging fecal contamination was predicted using source-associated markers. Microbial decay characteristics in typical summer seawater were incorporated into a pathogen dose estimation model for a constant fecal input. Results show that the median illness probability commensurate with the health benchmark of 36/1000 corresponded to the marker concentrations of ∼7.8, ∼6.6, ∼3.7, and ∼3.5 log₁₀ gene copies/100 mL for seagulls, cattle, raw sewage, and treated effluent, respectively. The error in risk estimates due to neglecting microbial decay was linearly correlated to the decay differences between markers and pathogens. Specifically, the health risk associated with nonhuman sources, which was primarily contributed by bacterial and parasitic pathogens, can be substantially overestimated, while that for virus-dominated human sources was insignificantly affected by the differential decay. Additionally, seagulls dominated the Enterococcus concentration in waters with a mixture of the above-mentioned sources, although they posed limited health risk. This study provides an approach to understanding the influence of fecal aging on health risk estimation.

Bioretention cell incorporating Fe-biochar and saturated zones for enhanced stormwater runoff treatment

Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) removal in conventional bioretention systems is highly variable. Therefore, five novel experimental columns with different media configurations and constituents, and incorporating a saturated zone were developed and assessed to optimize the removal of N, P and other nutrients. Three types of media composed of the conventional mixed sand and soil media (T₁), biochar-amended media (T₂), and iron-coated biochar (ICB)-amended media (T₃) were evaluated. Two of the experimental columns were designed with double-layer configurations, while the other three were of a single-layer structure. Removal efficiencies of nutrients in the experimental columns were evaluated and compared using simulated runoff. Also, the effect of media depth on the retention of P and denitrifying enzyme activity (DEA) in the bioretention columns were evaluated. The experimental column only filled with T₃ showed the best performance for COD, ammonia (NH₄⁺-N) and total phosphorus (TP) removal (94.6%, 98.3% and 93.70%, respectively), whereas columns filled with T₂ performed poorly for TP removal (57.36%). For the removal of nitrate (NO₃^--N) and total nitrogen (TN), the columns using a single-layer and only filled with either T₃ or T₂ exhibited the best performance (93% and 97% TN removal, respectively). Overall, this study demonstrates that our proposed single-layered bioretention cell only filled with T₃ and incorporating a saturated zone effectively improves the runoff quality, and can provide a new bioretention cell configuration for efficient stormwater treatment.

Development of a water cycle management approach to Sponge City construction in Xi'an, China

In recent years, climate change, population growth, and inefficient use of water have exacerbated the water resources scarcity problems around the world. Hence, this paper establishes a new approach of Sponge City construction (SCC) based on water cycle management (WCM) for the sustainable exploitation of groundwater, recycled wastewater and rainwater in the Xi'an Siyuan University. The University is located in an isolated area that is far away from the city center so that no centralized water supply system could be utilized. To mitigate water scarcity problems in the University, 39% of the annual rainfall is harvested and stored from impervious surfaces and grasslands by using the Curve Number (CN) method. This stored water is reused for non-potable purposes: 40% for toilet flushing and 60% as miscellaneous water. According to findings, the available rainwater of500-700 m³/d accounts for 16-23% of the non-potable water from April to December. Moreover, the utilization rate of water resources increases from 204% to 227%. With the minimum volume of large-scale rainwater harvesting cistern of 52,760 m³, the environment could be adequately watered while improving the expansion and development conditions on the campus. Furthermore, water scarcity problems could be mitigated through optimization of the water resources utilization system. This study demonstrates that this new approach of SCC based on WCM could alleviate water resources scarcity problems in Xi'an Siyuan University effectively. It is hoped that this study will provide a model and example of the new approach for future applications.

Role of divalent metals Cu2+ and Zn2+ in Microcystis aeruginosa proliferation and production of toxic microcystins

Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺, two ubiquitous metals in water environments, can widely trigger algae blooms at favourable environmental conditions. This paper elucidates the roles of Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ in the proliferation of Microcystis aeruginosa (M. aeruginosa) and synthesis of Microcystins (MCs). Findings indicate significant influences of increasing Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ concentrations on cell proliferation at limited available phosphorus concentrations of less than 0.1 mg/L. By contrast, Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ notably affected MCs production at all the inoculated phosphorus concentrations. The critical concentrations of 1 μg/L and 5 μg/L for Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺, respectively, are determined to trigger rapid cell proliferation and MCs production. Furthermore, the impacts of Cu²⁺ and Zn²⁺ on nitrogen absorption and, subsequently, on amino acids (AAs) formation in cells, is likely key in MCs synthesis. The two AAs Alanine (Ala) and glutamic acid (Glu) demonstrate the most notable variations with the concentrations of Cu²⁺ & Zn²⁺.

Thermodynamic prediction and experimental investigation of short-term dynamic membrane formation in dynamic membrane bioreactors: Effects of sludge properties

In dynamic membrane bioreactors (DMBRs), a dynamic membrane (DM) forms on a support material to act as the separation membrane for solids and liquids. In this study, batch filtration tests were carried out in a DMBR using nylon mesh (25 μm) as support material to filtrate sludge suspensions of variable properties from three different sources to evaluate the effects on the short-term DM formation process (within 240 min). Furthermore, the extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory was applied to analyze the sludge adhesion and cohesion behaviors on the mesh surface to predict quantitative parameters of the short-term DM formation process (including initial formation and maturation stage). The filtration results showed that the order of the initial DM formation time (permeate turbidity <1 NTU as an indicator) was as follows: sludge with poor settleability and dewaterability < normal sludge < sludge with poor flocculability. Moreover, normal sludge (regarding settleability, dewaterability, flocculability, and extracellular polymeric substance) showed a more acceptable DM formation performance (short DM formation time, low permeate turbidity, and high permeate flux) than sludge with poor settleability, dewaterability and flocculability. The influence of sludge properties on the initial DM formation time corroborates the prediction of sludge adhesion behaviors by XDLVO theory. Additionally, the XDLVO calculation results showed that acid-based interaction, energy barrier, and secondary energy minimum were important determinants of the sludge adhesion and cohesion behaviors. Therefore, short-term DM formation process may be enhanced to achieve stable long-term DMBR operation through positive modification of the sludge properties.

Dynamic membrane bioreactor performance enhancement by powdered activated carbon addition: Evaluation of sludge morphological, aggregative and microbial properties

The effects of powdered activated carbon (PAC) addition on sludge morphological, aggregative and microbial properties in a dynamic membrane bioreactor (DMBR) were investigated to explore the enhancement mechanism of pollutants removal and filtration performance. Sludge properties were analyzed through various analytical measurements. The results showed that the improved sludge aggregation ability and the evolution of microbial communities affected sludge morphology in PAC-DMBR, as evidenced by the formation of large, regularly shaped and strengthened sludge flocs. The modifications of sludge characteristics promoted the formation process and filtration flux of the dynamic membrane (DM) layer. Additionally, PAC addition did not exert very significant influence on the propagation of eukaryotes (protists and metazoans) and microbial metabolic activity. High-throughput pyrosequencing results indicated that adding PAC improved the bacterial diversity in activated sludge, as PAC addition brought about additional microenvironment in the form of biological PAC (BPAC), which promoted the enrichment of Acinetobacter (13.9%), Comamonas (2.9%), Flavobacterium (0.31%) and Pseudomonas (0.62%), all contributing to sludge flocs formation and several (such as Acinetobacter) capable of biodegrading relatively complex organics. Therefore, PAC addition could favorably modify sludge properties from various aspects and thus enhance the DMBR performance.

Molecular characterization of long-term impacts of macrophytes harvest management in constructed wetlands

There is little understanding of constructed wetlands (CWs) microbial community patterns in response to harvest management. Therefore, long-term impacts of harvesting Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steudel annually in November on the activity and community structure of microorganisms critical to the treatment efficiency of CW are elucidated. Findings show exponential increases in P. australis density and biomass with continuous harvesting, up to three times over unharvested CW. High-throughput pyrosequencing analysis demonstrates that plants harvesting improves the microbial community diversity and richness significantly, and more particularly, the relative abundance of Flavobacterium, Paenisporosarcina, and Povalibacter, which are extensively associated with CW performance. Consequently, increased plants biomass resulted in enhanced plants nutrients uptake in harvested (56.5 g N/m², 5.5 g P/m²) than unharvested CWs (17.5 g N/m², 1.8 g P/m²), whereas improved rhizosphere microclimates significantly enhanced nutrients removals in harvested CW (TN 109.9 g/m² vs 67.4 g/m², TP 18.0 g/m² vs 13.0 g/m²).

Impacts of different biochar types on hydrogen production promotion during fermentative co-digestion of food wastes and dewatered sewage sludge

Pyrolysis and anaerobic digestion are two important strategies for waste management that may be combined for clean energy production. This article investigates the effects of 12 types of biochars derived from four feedstocks at three pyrolysis temperatures on H₂ production via fermentative co-digestion of food wastes and dewatered sewage sludge. The results show that feedstock type and pyrolysis temperature significantly influence biochar properties such as pH, specific surface area and ash contents. Despite the wide range of BET specific surface areas (1.2-511.3 m²/g) and ash contents (5.3-73.7(wt%)) of biochars produced, most biochars promoted the VFAs production process and altered the fermentative type from that of acetate type to butyrate type, which seemed to have a higher efficiency for H₂ production. Moreover, fitting of the results to the modified Gompertz model shows that biochar addition shortens the lag time by circa 18-62% and increases the maximum H₂ production rate by circa 18-110%. Furthermore, the biochar derived at higher pyrolysis temperatures enhances H₂ production dramatically over those derived at low temperatures. Principal components analysis demonstrated that the pH buffering capacity of biochar was critical to the promotion of fermentative H₂ production by mitigating the pH decrease caused by VFAs accumulation. Consequently, a sustainable integrated waste management strategy combining pyrolysis and anaerobic digestion is proposed for the efficient treatment of various bio-wastes.

Coagulation performance of cucurbit[8]uril for the removal of azo dyes: effect of solution chemistry and coagulant dose

Dye wastewater has attracted significant attention because of its wide pH range and high content of color. In this work, the coagulation performances of cucurbit[8]uril for the removal of color from acid red 1 (AR1), orange II (OII), and Congo red (CR) dye wastewaters were investigated. Experimental results showed that color removal rates of greater than 95% for AR1, OII and CR were achieved at pH 6.0, when the dosage of cucurbit[8]uril was 1.51, 3.01 and 0.38 mmol·L^-1, respectively. Under identical conditions, the color removal efficiencies of AR1 and CR were higher than OII, due to the larger molecular weights and more active hydroxyl and amino groups. Moreover, steady increases in AR1, OII and CR removal rates were recorded with increasing ionic strength. Such increases may be related to the reduction in thickness of the surface solvent membrane surrounding the dye colloids at high ionic strengths. Furthermore, Fourier transform infrared spectra demonstrated that no new bonds or functional groups were formed during coagulation, which indicates that the removal of AR1, OII and CR was primarily a physical process. The hydrogen bonds and inclusion complexes formed between cucurbit[8]uril and AR1, OII and CR contributed to the removal of color in coagulation predominantly.

On the risks from sediment and overlying water by replenishing urban landscape ponds with reclaimed wastewater

The extensive use of reclaimed wastewater (RW) as a source of urban landscape pond replenishment, stimulated by the lack of surface water (SW) resources, has raised public concern. Greater attention should be paid to pond sediments, which act as 'sinks' and 'sources' of contaminants to the overlying pond water. Three ponds replenished with RW (RW ponds) in three Chinese cities were chosen to investigate 22 indices of sediment quality in four categories: eutrophication, heavy metal, ecotoxicity and pathogens risk. RW ponds were compared with other ponds of similar characteristics in the same cities that were replenished with SW (SW ponds). Our results show a strong impact of RW to the eutrophication and pathogenic risks, which are represented by organic matter, water content, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and phosphorus fractions, and pathogens. In particular, total phosphorus concentrations in the RW pond sediments were, on average, 50% higher than those of SW ponds. Moreover, the content of phosphorus, extracted by bicarbonate/dithionite (normally represented by BD-P) and NaOH (NaOH-P), were 2.0- and 2.83-times higher in RW ponds, respectively. For pathogens, the concentrations of norovirus and rotavirus in RW pond sediments were, on average, 0.52 and 0.30- log times those of SW ponds. The duration of RW replenishment was proved to have a marked impact on the eutrophication and pathogens risks from sediments. The continued use of RW for replenishment increases the eutrophication risk, and the pathogens risk, especially by viral pathogens, becomes greater.

Development of an indicator for characterizing particle size distribution and quality of stormwater runoff

Stormwater particles washed from road-deposited sediments (RDS) are traditionally characterized as either turbidity or total suspended solids (TSS). Although these parameters are influenced by particle sizes, neither of them characterizes the particle size distribution (PSD), which is of great importance in pollutant entrainment and treatment performance. Therefore, the ratio of turbidity to TSS (Tur/TSS) is proposed and validated as a potential surrogate for the bulk PSD and quality of stormwater runoff. The results show an increasing trend of Tur/TSS with finer sizes of both RDS and stormwater runoff. Taking heavy metals (HMs, including Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, and Ni) as typical pollutants in stormwater runoff, the concentrations (mg/kg) were found to vary significantly during rainfall events and tended to increase significantly with Tur/TSS. Therefore, Tur/TSS is a valid parameter to characterize the PSD and quality of stormwater. The high negative correlations between Tur/TSS and rainfall intensity demonstrate that stormwater with higher Tur/TSS generates under low intensity and, thus, characterizes small volume, finer sizes, weak settleability, greater mobility, and bioavailability. Conversely, stormwater with lower Tur/TSS generates under high intensity and, thus, characterizes large volume, coarser sizes, good settleability, low mobility, and bioavailability. These results highlight the need to control stormwater with high Tur/TSS. Moreover, Tur/TSS can aid the selection of stormwater control measures with appropriate detention storage, pollution loading, and removal effectiveness of particles.

Growth characteristics and nutrient removal capability of eco-ditch plants in mesocosm sediment receiving primary domestic wastewater

Eco-ditches are being explored to maximize their capability of capturing pollutants and mitigate any harmful side effects in rivers. In this study, mesocosm plastic drum sediment and field experiments were set up to screen 18 plant species found in ditches and identify those with potential for high biomass production and nutrients removal. Terrestrial plants grown in the mesocosm system were shown to be able to acclimate to aquatic conditions and to survive in primary domestic sewage. About 73-95% increase in plant biomass was recorded. Removal efficiencies for total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and ammonium-nitrogen from the sewage of 72-99%, 64-99%, and 75-100%, respectively, were recorded. Furthermore, complete removal of the applied nitrate-nitrogen load was achieved in mesocosm systems. Findings also show that all species, but especially Acorus calamus, Canna indica, Canna lily, Cyperus alternifolius, Colocasia gigantea, Eichhornia crassipes, Iris sibirica, and Typha latifolia had the highest efficiencies for nitrogen and phosphorous removal. The N and P mass balance analysis demonstrated that plant uptake and sediment N and P accumulation accounted for 41-86% and 18-49% of the total influent TN and TP loads, respectively. In addition, the amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous uptake by these plant species were influenced significantly by biomass. The field-culture experiment further identified Canna indica followed by Cyperus alternifolius as the most promising for high biomass production and nutrients uptake. Therefore, these plants may be recommended for extensive use in treating highly eutrophicated rivers. Outcomes of this work can be useful for model design specifications in eco-ditch mitigation of sewage pollution.

Evaluation of ecotoxicological effects of benzophenone UV filters: Luminescent bacteria toxicity, genotoxicity and hormonal activity

The widespread use of organic ultraviolet (UV) filters in personal care products raises concerns about their potentially hazardous effects on human and ecosystem health. In this study, the toxicities of four commonly used benzophenones (BPs) UV filters including benzophenone (BP), 2-Hydroxybenzophenone (2HB), 2-Hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone (BP3), and 2-Hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone-5-sulfonicacid (BP4) in water were assayed in vitro using Vibrio fischeri, SOS/umu assay, and yeast estrogen screen (YES) assay, as well as in vivo using zebrafish larvae. The results showed that the luminescent bacteria toxicity, expressed as logEC₅₀, increased with the lipophilicity (logKow) of BPs UV filters. Especially, since 2HB, BP3 and BP4 had different substituent groups, namely -OH, -OCH₃ and -SO₃H, respectively, these substituent functional groups had a major contribution to the lipophilicity and acute toxicity of these BPs. Similar tendency was observed for the genotoxicity, expressed as the value of induction ratio=1.5. Moreover, all the target BPs UV filters showed estrogenic activity, but no significant influences of lipophilicity on the estrogenicity were observed, with BP3 having the weakest estrogenic efficiency in vitro. Although BP3 displayed no noticeable adverse effects in any in vitro assays, multiple hormonal activities were observed in zebrafish larvae including estrogenicity, anti-estrogenicity and anti-androgenicity by regulating the expression of target genes. The results indicated potential hazardous effects of BPs UV filters and the importance of the combination of toxicological evaluation methods including in vitro and in vivo assays.

Genetic characterization of fecal impacts of seagull migration on an urban scenery lake

A microbial source tracking scheme was devised to differentiate fecal impacts of seagulls from that of human activities on an urban scenery lake in southern China, which is a major wintering ground for the black-headed seagull. Fecal contamination of seagulls was characterized by quantifying a novel genetic marker targeting Catellicoccus marimamalium. Quantification of this marker was combined with those of Escherichia coli, human-associated Bacteroidales, thermophilic Campylobacter and Helicobacter. Findings of a year-round study indicate that C. marimamalium levels correlated strongly, both spatially and temporally, with seagull migration. A steady increase in C. marimammalium concentrations was recorded between October 2014 and March 2015, which peaked at about 5-log copies/100 mL in January. However, a background level of about 2.1-log copies/100 mL was noticeable from April through September when seagulls were absent, probably due to other host sources or secondary habitats for C. marimammalium. Seagull migration also caused an apparent elevation of E. coli concentrations (86% and 60%, respectively for qPCR and culture method; p < 0.001) as well as Campylobacter and Helicobacter (66% and 68%, respectively; p < 0.001). Nonetheless, in contrast to the declining levels of E. coli, Campylobacter and Helicobacter, the human-specific Bacteroidales marginally increased in the seagull-absent season, indicating a limited influence of human activities, compared with seagull migration, on the seasonal variations in microbial water quality of the lake. The elevated levels of FIB, Campylobacter and Helicobacter along with C. marimammalium may imply human health risk of the lake water due to seasonal seagull migration, which requires further investigation for risk assessment.

Long-term impact of primary domestic sewage on metal/loid accumulation in drainage ditch sediments, plants and water: Implications for phytoremediation and restoration

We evaluate the long-term performance of a vegetated drainage ditch (VDD) treating domestic sewage with respect to heavy metal/metalloid (HM/M) accumulation in sediments, plants and water. VDD sediment contained significantly higher macro and trace elements compared to an agricultural ditch (AD) sediment. However, concentrations of HM/Ms in VDD sediment were below the ranges considered toxic to plants. Most HM/Ms were efficiently removed in the VDD, whereby removal efficiencies varied between 11% for Al and 89% for K. Accumulation of HM/Ms varied among species and plant parts, although sequestration by plants represents only a small proportion (<1%) of the inflow load. Accumulation of Al, As, Cd, Pb, Cr, Fe and Ni in VDD plants were mostly distributed in the roots, indicating an exclusive strategy for metal tolerance. The opposite was found for Zn, Cu, K, Ca, P, K, Na, N and Mg, which were accumulated either in the stems or leaves. Overall, concentrations of metals in sediment showed significant positive correlations with those in ditch plants. None of the studied species were identified as metal hyper-accumulators (i.e. >10,000mgkg^-1 of Zn or Mn). Nevertheless, the high translocation factor (TF) values for Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Na, Mg, P, K and Ca in the ditch plants make them suitable for phytoextraction from water/soil, while the low TF values for Pb, Cd, As, Fe, Cr and Al make them suitable for their phytostabilization.
