Abstract
Photoemission orbital tomography (POT) from photoelectron momentum maps (PMMs) is a powerful technique that visualizes the shape of the molecular orbitals (MOs) of molecular films. For further utilization of POT, a simple and low-cost method of POT is highly required. Here, we propose a new POT method based on the PhaseLift algorithm (PhaseLift POT). This method utilizes a lifting procedure to convert the PMM, which is a second-order polynomial of MO coefficients, into a first-order polynomial of the lifted MO coefficients and further relaxes the equality constraint for a given PMM. We also established a method to improve the accuracy of phase retrieval from the noisy PMM data by using sparsity for MO coefficients (sparse PhaseLift POT). These methods make it possible to reconstruct the three-dimensional MOs, including phases of the wave function, directly from a single experimental PMM. This method can also precisely determine the adsorption-induced molecular deformations with an accuracy of 0.05 [Å]. Furthermore, the robust sparse PhaseLift POT is robust against unavoidable noise in the experimental PMMs due to the relaxation of the matching condition for a given PMM. Therefore, this will be an innovative tool for POT, especially for analyzing the dynamics of the molecules during the chemical reaction and excitation processes.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Although pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA) is an established surgical treatment for chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH), a part of patients after PEA show residual pulmonary hypertension, leading to limited exercise capacity. Recently, several studies have indicated that balloon pulmonary angioplasty (BPA) improves hemodynamics, exercise capacity and prognosis in inoperable CTEPH patients. However, the effects of BPA in patients with residual pulmonary hypertension after PEA remain to be elucidated.
Aim
In the present study, we investigated comprehensive efficacy of BPA on hemodynamics, exercise capacity and right ventricular function in those with residual pulmonary hypertension after PEA.
Methods
From October 2010 to February 2019, 227 patients with CTEPH underwent PEA in our institution. Right heart catheterization after PEA (median follow up period from PEA to right heart catheterization 39 [10.5, 90] months) showed that 55 patients showed residual PH (mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP)≥25mmHg), and 38 of them referred to BPA (mean age 57 years old, male 8 (21%)) due to residual symptoms. In 29 out of 38 patients (76%) who completed BPA and underwent follow-up right heart catheterization, we examined hemodynamics, exercise capacity and right ventricular function before and after BPA. Follow-up examination was performed 3 months after last BPA session.
Results
In this study population (N=29), PEA significantly improved mPAP (47±7 to 38±10 mmHg), pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR, 14.6±4.6 to 9.2±4.6 WU) and right ventricular ejection fraction measured by magnetic resonance imaging (26.6±11.3 to 38.4±6.8%) (Figure). Median period from PEA to first BPA procedure was 42 [13.5, 94] months. Total session number during study period was 160 sessions, and mean session number of BPA was 5.5±1.5 per patient. Follow-up study revealed that BPA additionally improved mPAP (38±10 to 27±8 mmHg) and PVR (9.2±4.6 to 5.1±2.2 WU) (Figure). Similarly, 6-minute walk distance (393±125 to 452±125 m) and peak VO2 (16.4±3.8 to 18.1±4.6 ml/min/kg, p<0.05) were increased, and WHO functional class also significantly improved by BPA (I/II/III/IV, 0/21/8/ 0 to 1/27/1/0, p<0.01). In addition, right ventricular ejection fraction (38.4±6.8 to 44.2±7.1%) was increased after BPA (Figure). There were no procedure-related deaths and major lung injuries requiring oral intubation during study period. 3-year survival in patients after BPA was 100% (median follow-up period after last BPA session, 32 [18, 46] months).
Conclusion
In CTEPH patients with residual pulmonary hypertension after PEA, additional BPA significantly improved hemodynamics, right ventricular function, exercise capacity and residual symptoms without severe complications, leading to good prognosis. These results suggest that combination therapy of PEA and BPA could be an effective therapeutic option for post PEA patients with residual symptoms and exercise limitation.

Abstract
AIMS To develop a rapid and simple genus-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method for detecting and identifying isolates of the genus Azospirillum which is well-recognized as plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium. METHODS AND RESULTS Nine pairs of PCR primers were designed based on the Azospirillum 16S rRNA, ipdC, nifA and nifH genes to assess their genus specificity by testing against 12 Azospirillum (from seven species) and 15 non-Azospirillum reference strains, as compared with the fAZO/rAZO pair reported by Baudoin et al. (J Appl Microbiol, 108, 2010, 25). Among the primer pairs assessed, the Az16S-A pair designed on the 16S rRNA gene sequence showed the highest genus specificity: it successfully yielded a single amplicon of the expected size in all the 12 Azospirillum strains and for a close relative, Rhodocista centenaria. The PCR with the Az16S-A primers generated a detectable amount of the amplicon from ≥10³ CFU ml⁻¹ of Azospirillum cell suspensions even in the presence of contaminants and accurately discriminated Azospirillum and non-Azospirillum species in both 35 Azospirillum-like and 70 unknown isolates from plant roots and rhizosphere soils. CONCLUSIONS We developed a rapid and simple PCR method for detecting and identifying Azospirillum isolates within populations of rhizosphere bacteria. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY The method developed would serve as a useful tool for isolating a variety of indigenous Azospirillum bacteria from agricultural samples.

Abstract
Multi-finger structure was proposed to improve flexibility of the CMOS LSI-based multi-chip retinal stimulator. A dual-finger retinal stimulator was fabricated and its functionality was demonstrated in retinal stimulation experiments on rabbit's retina, We also proposed an idea of pulsed-powering operation scheme for the multi-chip flexible retinal stimulator. We compared the pulsed-powering scheme with conventional one in a simulation, and show that the pulsed-powering can be an alternative operation scheme for the neural stimulator that provides an improved safety to the biological tissue.

Abstract
Several animal studies have demonstrated the beneficial effects of hypertonic saline (HSS) on cerebral blood flow, intracranial pressure and brain water content. This study aimed to investigate, using magnetic resonance imaging, whether a small volume of HSS is superior to dextran in vasodilatation of cerebral vessels and reduction of cerebrospinal fluids in dogs. HSS induced a significant expansion of the cross-section of the superior sagittal sinus in the axial transverse section of the pituitary and a decrease in cerebrospinal fluid area in the axial transverse section of the epencephalon more than dextran 40 did (p<0.001, respectively). However, the relative plasma volume in the dog which received dextran 40 was significantly higher after t=30min than in the HSS group (p<0.001). Therefore, it is suggested that HSS might be superior to colloid solutions in improving cerebral circulation, whereas dextran 40 is superior to HSS in enhancing systemic circulation in dogs.

Abstract
The synthesis and evaluation of novel azetidine lincosamides 1 are described. Eleven new (3-trans-alkyl)azetidine-2-carboxylic acids were synthesized via alkylation of N-TBS-4-oxo-azetidine-2-carboxylic acid and subsequent elaboration then coupled to 7-chloro-1-methylthio-lincosamine. The resulting lincosamides differ from the drug clindamycin in both the size of the ring and the position/structure of the alkyl side-chain. SAR within the series was explored with attention to alkyl variants in positions 1 and 3 of the azetidine ring.

Abstract
Avoparcin, a glycopeptide antimicrobial agent related to vancomycin, has been used extensively as a growth promoter in animal feeds for more than 2 decades, and evidence has shown that such use contributed to the development of vancomycin-resistant enterococci. A cluster that includes three genes, vanH, vanA, and vanX, is required for high-level resistance to glycopeptides. In the vancomycin producer Amycolatopsis orientalis C329.2, homologs of these genes are present, suggesting an origin for the cluster. We found substantial bacterial DNA contamination in animal-feed-grade avoparcin. Furthermore, nucleotide sequences related to the cluster vanHAX are present in this DNA, suggesting that the prolonged use of avoparcin in agriculture led to the uptake of glycopeptide resistance genes by animal commensal bacteria, which were subsequently transferred to humans.

[How much can off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting be performed for complete revascularization using only in situ arterial conduits?]. KYOBU GEKA. Abstract
With the rapid advance of percutaneous catheter intervention, the direction taken by surgeons is not only to make coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) less invasive but also to obtain better long-term results by using more arterial conduits. However, off-pump CABG (OPCAB) with only in situ arterial conduits such as the left and right internal thoracic arteries (ITAs) and the right gastroepiploic artery (RGEA) is technically demanding for the surgeon. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility and safety of this technique. From January 2002 to December 2002, 57 patients underwent isolated CABG without cardiopulmonary bypass, excluding minimally invasive direct coronary artery bypass (MIDCAB) cases. There were 44 men and 13 women with a mean age of 64.1 years. Most of the patients (95%) underwent postoperative angiography within 1 month after surgery. The mean number of anastomoses was 3.8 +/- 1.4 (range 2-8). One patient suffered from mediastinitis and another from stroke. All patients were discharged from the hospital. Fifty patients (88%) received only in situ grafts for complete revascularization. Forty-one patients received bilateral ITAs and 27 received bilateral ITAs and RGEA. The mean number of anastomoses using bilateral ITAs and RGEA was 4.5 +/- 1.2 (range 3-8). The patency rate was 98%. Complete arterial revascularization with only in situ arterial conduits was associated with minimal operative risk and a high early graft patency rate, even in the off-pump situation. These results indicate that complete revascularization can be achieved in OPCAB with the exclusive use of in situ arterial conduits in patients with diffuse coronary arterial disease.

Abstract
For the purpose of establishing a new adoptive immunotherapy for bile duct carcinoma (BDC), we have directed our attention to superantigens (SAgs), the most potent known activators of T lymphocytes. In our previous study, staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA) was conjugated chemically with MUSE11 mAb, which recognizes the MUC1 cancer-associated antigen, and shown to enhance the specific cytotoxic activity of T-LAK cells against MUC1-expressing BDC cells (TFK-1) in vitro and in vivo. However, it is probable that SEA might cause side-effects because of nonspecific binding to class II positive cells. In order to overcome these, we generated mutated SEA (mSEA) by changing Asp at position 227 of native SEA to Ala, which has reduced affinity to MHC class II molecules, but retains the potential for T cell activation. When mSEA-D227A was administered to rabbits to examine effects on blood pressure, 500 times more mSEA-D227A was tolerated than native SEA. This prompted us to construct a mSEA-D227A-conjugated mAb, reactive with MUC1. It augmented the antitumor activity of T-LAK cells significantly, and furthermore, mSEA-D227A could be conjugated to two bispecific antibodies, BsAb (anti-MUC1 x anti-CD3) and BsAb (anti-MUC1 x anti-CD28), which in combination had greater enhancing effects than mSEA-D227A-conjugated anti-MUC1 mAb, and combination of unconjugated BsAbs. These findings indicate a utility of mSEA-D227A-conjugated antibodies for targeted cancer immunotherapy.

Abstract
The Ross procedure, which includes removal of the malformed aortic valve and replacement of a pulmonary autograft in the aortic position, has increased the number of available treatment options. Recently, dilatation of the autograft pulmonary root after the Ross procedure has been reported as a complication. We report a patient with bicuspid aortic valve malformations and aortic annulus dilatation, who had a saccular-form, true-type, aneurysm in the pulmonary autograft seven months after the Ross procedure. These changes have not been described so far as complication. Pathologically, marked mucoid degeneration was noted in the tunica media of the aneurysm, as well as in the original aortic root. These findings may suggest similar pathological characteristics between the aorta and pulmonary arteries. Hence, the surgical risks accompanying vascular characteristics in patients with congenital aortic valve malformations should be considered.

Abstract
Extract of Gymnema sylvestre R. Br leaves (GE) was orally administered once a day to rats fed a high fat diet or normal fat diet for 3 weeks to investigate its influence on lipid metabolism. As a result, GE did not influence body weight gain or feed intake in both diet groups during the experimental period. The apparent fat digestibility was significantly decreased by GE in both diet groups for the last 2 weeks of the experimental period, though not the apparent protein digestibility. In addition, the excretion of neutral sterols and acid steroids into feces was increased by GE in both diet groups. Furthermore, GE decreased the total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in serum. On the other hand, blood lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT) activity was increased by GE. Moreover, it was suggested that GE influenced cecal fermentation and that propionic acid and acetic acid contents in cecum were significantly increased by GE. Consequently, it was suggested that GE improved serum cholesterol and triglyceride levels through influence over a wide range of lipid metabolism in rats.

Abstract
Extract of Gymnema sylvestre leaves was administered to rats receiving either a high fat diet or normal fat diet for 10 weeks to investigate its influence on plasma and liver lipids and on visceral fat accumulation. In addition, its effect was compared with those of chitosan and the influence of combined use of these two substances was also evaluated. Within the high fat diet groups, the extract suppressed body weight gain and accumulation of liver lipids to the same extent as chitosan and the combined use. In addition, intraperitoneal fat and fat drop vacuoles on the epithelium of renal tubules, noted in the high fat diet group, were scattered by administration of the extract with the same results as for chitosan and combined use. Within the normal fat diet groups, plasma triglyceride levels decreased by administration of the extract, with similar results as chitosan and combined use. Concerning plasma total cholesterol, there was no decreasing effects with the extract, as found with chitosan and combined use. However, the effect of chitosan on plasma total cholesterol tended to be enhanced when used in combination with the extract. In addition, long-term administration of the extract did not show any influence on hematological and blood chemical parameters.

The methanol soluble portion of black cumin oil, which is prepared by compression of seeds of Nigella sativa L., showed inhibitory effects on arachidonic acid (AA)-induced platelet aggregation and blood coagulation. By bioactive assay of AA-induced platelet aggregation, the methanol soluble part was purified to isolate a new compound 2-(2-methoxypropyl)-5-methyl-1,4-benzenediol (1) and two known compounds, thymol (2), carvacrol (3), having very strong inhibitory activity. Further, we then examined the isolated compounds (1-3) and eight related compounds by the screening test for AA-induced platelet aggregation. Compounds possessing aromatic hydroxyl and acetoxyl group had more potent activity than aspirin, which is well known as a remedy for thrombosis.

Construction of a diabody (small recombinant bispecific antibody) using a refolding system. PROTEIN ENGINEERING 2000; 13:583-8. Abstract
Diabodies are the recombinant bispecific antibodies (BsAbs), constructed from heterogeneous single-chain antibodies. Usually, diabodies have been prepared from bacterial periplasmic fraction using a co-expression vector (i.e. genes encoding two chains were tandemly located under the same promoter). Some diabodies, however, cannot be expressed as a soluble material owing to inclusion body formation, which limits the utilization of diabodies in various fields. Here we report an improved method for the construction of diabodies using a refolding system. As a model, a bispecific diabody binding to adenocarcinoma-associated antigen MUC1 and to CD3 on T cells was studied. One chain consisted of a VH specific for MUC1 linked to a VL specific for CD3 with a short polypeptide linker (GGGGS). The second was composed of a VL specific for MUC1 linked to a VH specific for CD3. The two hetero scFvs were independently obtained from intracellular insoluble fractions of Escherichia coli, purified, mixed stoichiometrically (at an equivalent molar ratio of 1:1) and refolded. The refolded two hetero scFv has a hetero-dimeric structure, with complete specificity for both target cells [i.e. MUC1 positive cells and CD3 positive lymphokine-activated killer cells with a T cell phenotype (T-LAK)]. Evaluation of the in vitro efficacy of T-LAK with the diabody by growth inhibition assay of cancer cells demonstrated maximum growth inhibition of cancer cells to reach approximately 98% at an effector:target ratio (E:T ratio) of 10, almost identical with that with anti-MUC1xanti-CD3 chemically synthesized BsAbs (c-BsAbs). This is the first report of the construction of a diabody using a refolding system.

Abstract
The most predominant co-stimulation pathway, which is critical for T cell activation and proliferation, is the CD28-B7 pathway. The anti-CD28 monoclonal antibody (mAb) also provides a co-stimulatory signal to T cells. In order to construct a functional Fv fragment (complex of VH and VL domains) of anti-CD28 antibody using a bacterial expression system, cDNA encoding the variable regions of immunoglobulin from 15E8 hybridoma cells was cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. The Fv fragment was obtained as a soluble protein from the periplasmic fraction and showed a binding pattern similar to parental IgG. The Fv fragment induced proliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells in the presence of anti-CD3 or anti-CD2 mAb and enhanced anti-tumor activity of anti-MUC1x(anti)-CD3 bispecific antibody when tested with lymphokine-activated killer cells with T cell phenotype. Thus, the anti-CD28 Fv fragment will be promising not only for the study of co-stimulation, but also for cancer immunotherapy.

Functional construction of the anti-mucin core protein (MUC1) antibody MUSE11 variable regions in a bacterial expression system. J Biochem 2000; 127:673-9. Abstract
A bacterial expression system for the variable region fragments (Fvs) of the anti-MUC1 tumor antigen antibody MUSE11 has been constructed. The Fv fragment showed binding specificity toward TFK-1 cells, with slightly reduced affinity compared to its parent IgG. The single-chain Fv fragment was arranged in two orders, VH-linker-VL and VL-linker-VH. However, linking the regions with a flexible peptide linker (GGGGS)(3) or with a shorter linker (GGGGS) led to a dramatic decrease in the biological activity toward the target antigen in both arrangements, suggesting that the MUSE11 antibody loses its activity when the domains are linked with polypeptide linkers. These results indicate that the variable region domains of the anti-MUC1 antibody MUSE11 have specificity only in the Fv form, and that linking the domains strongly reduces the association with its target antigen. Gel filtration analysis indicates that the scFv has a dimeric structure, suggesting that the inactivation of MUSE11 scFv is due to unfavorable intermolecular associations of the scFv chains. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a significant reduction in affinity caused by linking the variable domains in both arrangements, i.e., VH-VL and VL-VH.

Abstract
Reperfusion therapy is one of the most effective treatments for acute myocardial infarction, but the effect on left ventricular free wall rupture remains to be determined. This study tried to clarify the risk factors and effect of reperfusion therapy on the risk of free wall rupture following acute myocardial infarction. 2,671 consecutive patients with acute myocardial infarction admitted to our hospital were examined. Incidence of free wall rupture showed no degenerative change(0 to 5.8%; mean 2.1%). The 1,269 consecutive patients from 1985 to 1995 were examined closely to evaluate risk factors and the effect of reperfusion therapy on the risk of free wall rupture. Fourteen patients who underwent emergent coronary artery bypass surgery were excluded. Free wall rupture was found in 25 patients (2.0%). Multivariate analysis confirmed that high age(> or = 70 years) and first acute myocardial infarction were independent risk factors of free wall rupture (odds ratio 3.62, p = 0.003; odds ratio 7.69, p = 0.046, respectively). The incidence of free wall rupture in the conservative therapy group(n = 799) was 2.1%, successful reperfusion group(n = 373) was 0.5%, and unsuccessful reperfusion group(n = 83) was 7.2% with significant statistical differences(p < 0.01). There was no statistical difference between the direct percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty group(n = 84, 3.6%) and the thrombolysis group(n = 372, 1.3%). Successful reperfusion was the only independent factor in the reperfusion therapy group that reduced the incidence of free wall rupture(odds ratio = 0.07, p = 0.001). We conclude that reperfusion of the infarct-related artery and more intensive management of unsuccessful reperfusion is important to prevent free wall rupture following acute myocardial infarction.

Abstract
Preoperative echocardiography provides good planning information for successful repair of mitral valve regurgitation, but identifying the prolapse of both the anterior and posterior leaflets is sometimes difficult. To clarify the cause of this problem, preoperative echocardiographic findings and intraoperative observations of the prolapse were analyzed in 124 patients with non-rheumatic pure mitral regurgitation. In 48 patients with final diagnoses of bileaflet prolapse, 16 (33%) were considered to have only single leaflet prolapse before the operation. Anterior leaflet prolapse was overlooked in 14, and prolapse of either of its commissural segments was the least detectable by echocardiography. Chordal rupture was seen more in the posterior leaflet than in the anterior leaflet. Movement of the anterior leaflet may be influenced by a prolapsed and hypermobile posterior leaflet and/or regurgitant jet flow caused by the posterior leaflet prolapse.

Abstract
To obtain the basic data on the route of infection of intestinal parasites as zoonosis, we examined the feces from 87 main-land raccoon dogs, all of which were kept in the Yokohama Kanazawa Zoo (Kanagawa) between 1994-1996, for detection of intestinal parasites and evaluated the detection rates. Intestinal parasites were detected from 72 of the 87 raccoon dogs (82.8%). Among the parasites, Ancylostoma spp., Trichuris vulpis, Ascaridoidea and Isospora spp. were most commonly detected. Of the 72 raccoon dogs with parasites, 43 (59.7%) had mixed infection of more than two species of parasites. Since Ancylostoma spp., Ascaridoidea and Isospora spp., which are important causes of human diseases, were detected at relatively high rates, it was suggested that the raccoon dog could be a source of human infection of intestinal parasites.

Abstract
We evaluated the effects of disopyramide in terms of the balance between myocardial oxygen supply and demand in patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). The myocardial oxygen supply was evaluated by measuring coronary flow velocity and the myocardial oxygen demand was assessed by the pressure-volume area (PVA). The time velocity integral of coronary flow did not change significantly (20 +/- 6 to 21 +/- 8 cm), but the peak left ventricular pressure and left ventricular external work decreased significantly (206 +/- 44 to 157 +/- 37 mmHg, P < 0.001; 1.09 +/- 0.33 to 0.80 +/- 0.23 J/beat, P < 0.001) after disopyramide administration. From theoretical analysis using these data, we concluded that disopyramide improves the myocardial oxygen supply-demand balance in patients with HOCM.

Abstract
Naturally-occurring toxoplasma infection has been observed for years in various kinds of wild animals. However, the infection situation has not been well characterized due to a lack of research. In present study, latex fixation tests were conducted for 109 main-land raccoon dogs (67 males and 42 females) all of which were kept in Kanazawa Zoo in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture between 1991-1994 to measure levels of toxoplasma antibodies. The test results indicated 20 positive samples out of the total 109, an 18.3% positive rate. This demonstrates that toxoplasma infection exists in the raccoon dog population in Kanagawa Prefecture, and that the raccoon dog could be a source of spread of toxoplasma infection. We believe there is significant reason to continue the investigation as a part of a prophylaxis for zoonotic diseases.

Abstract
To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of detection of angina-related coronary arteries in patients with unstable angina pectoris. Twenty patients with unstable angina pectoris underwent 123I-BMIPP scintigraphy at rest. A mean duration from last anginal attack to 123I-BMIPP scintigraphy was 408 +/- 3.2 days. Seventeen of 20 angina-related coronary territories were detected by reduced 123I-BMIPP uptake. The sensitivity and specificity for detection of angina-related coronary arteries were 85% and 95%, respectively. The decrease in myocardial uptake of 123I-BMIPP agreed with the decrease in regional wall motion by using ultrasonic echocardiography. 123I-BMIPP scintigraphy may be useful for detection of angina-related coronary artery in a routine clinical examination in patients with unstable angina pectoris.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to clarify the diagnostic value of identifying viable myocardium using 99mTc-Tetrofosmin scintigraphy. Twenty-one patients with chronic coronary artery disease were studied using 201Tl exercise myocardial scintigraphy with reinjection and 99mTc-Tetrofosmin exercise myocardial scintigraphy. All patients had a history of old myocardial infarction. For 99mTc-Tetrofosmin scintigraphy, 222 MBq of 99mTc-Tetrofosmin was injected during exercise, and exercise images were obtained 20 min thereafter. There hours later, 666 MBq of 99mTc-Tetrofosmin was injected at rest, and images were obtained 40 min and 220 min later. Myocardial viability in the 99mTc-Tetrofosmin scintigraphy was estimated as fill-in findings (FF) or over 50% of %RI uptake (%TF) in the rest image. Myocardial viability in the 201Tl scintigraphy was estimated as redistribution (RD), fill-in findings in the reinjection image (FR) or over 50% of %RI uptake in the reinjection image (% TL). Sixteen of the 21 patients (76%) who underwent 201Tl scintigraphy (RD 10, FR 3, %TL 3 cases) and 15 of the 21 patients (71%) who underwent 99mTc-Tetrofosmin scintigraphy (FF 11, %TF 4 cases) had viable myocardium in the infarcted area. A comparison between the 99mTc-Tetrofosmin rest images obtained 40 min after the injection and that of 220 min revealed no redistribution findings. The %RI uptake of the infarcted area in the resting 99mTc-Tetrofosmin image (47 +/- 16%) was slightly lower than that in the 201Tl reinjection image (52 +/- 16%). In conclusion, viable myocardium was as clearly identified by 99mTc-Tetrofosmin, as by 201Tl scintigraphy.

Abstract
We have often experienced false positive results of the stress Thallium-201 myocardial scintigraphy (TL) for the evaluation of artery bypass graft patency after coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG). The purpose of this study is to clarify the frequency and the clinical significance of this findings. Sixty-two patients undergoing coronary angiography (CAG) after CABG were studied. These patients had undergone at total of 156 bypasses (artery grafts 108, saphenous vein grafts 48, mean bypass grafts number 2.65/cases), and the mean period from CABG to TL was 41.6 +/- 34 days. The territories of stress induced ischemia were divided into 3 territories; left anterior descending (LAD), right coronary artery (RCA), and left circumflex (LCX) territories. Patency of the bypass grafts was estimated on the absence of transient perfusion defect (TPD) on TL images. The incidence of false positive results was higher in Dipyridamole TL (38%) than in Exercise TL (18%) and higher in LAD territories (38%) than in RCA (11%) and LCX (13%) territories. All false positive cases showed no evidence of chest pain and significant ST-T change during stress TL test. High incidence of false positive results of stress TL test was observed for the evaluation of artery bypass graft patency after CABG.

Abstract
Discordant findings of inferior MIBG defect between SPECT and planar images were sometimes observed in the clinical studies. In this study, we compared inferior myocardial findings between planar and SPECT image of 123I-metaiodobenzyl-guanidine (MIBG) cardiac scintigraphy in 29 patients. All patients were estimated as normal in anterior accumulation of MIBG. The patients were divided into 3 groups according to the visual finding of inferior defect in the planar and SPECT image; normal group (normal inferior accumulation of MIBG both in the planar and SPECT image, N = 10), discordance group (inferior MIBG defect was only observed in the SPECT image, but was not observed in the planar image, N = 7), inferior defect group (inferior MIBG defect was observed both in the planar and SPECT image, N = 12). Inferior/anterior count ratio of SPECT and planar image were 0.96 +/- 0.11 vs. 0.97 +/- 0.05 in normal group, 0.59 +/- 0.21 vs. 0.99 +/- 0.13 in discordance group, 0.46 +/- 0.13 vs. 0.82 +/- 0.04 in inferior defect group. Liver/heart count ratio was significantly higher in the discordance group (2.07 +/- 0.49) than that in the normal (1.14 +/- 0.15) and inferior defect group (1.45 +/- 0.39). In phantom study, it has been reported that increased liver accumulation of MIBG causes artifactual inferior defect adjacent to the liver. These data indicate that increased liver/heart count ratio may cause artifactual inferior defect on MIBG SPECT image in the clinical studies. Planar image evaluation may be helpful to distinct the artifactual inferior defect on SPECT image.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to clarify whether dynamic SPECT (DECT) immediately after the injection of 123I-15-(p-iodophenyl)-3-methyl pentadecanoic acid (BMIPP) may represent myocardial perfusion imaging. Ten patients with unstable angina pectoris (UAP), 11 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and 6 patients with non-ischemic heart disease (NIHD) were studied using BMIPP myocardial scintigraphy with DECT. DECT acquisition was started 2 minutes after the injection of BMIPP, and DECT images were obtained every three minute for 15 minutes with 3-headed gamma camera SPECT system. Additionally, static SPECT images were acquired 30 minutes after the injection of BMIPP. These SPECT images of BMIPP were compared with thallium-201 myocardial perfusion images at rest. In UAP group, early DECT images showed almost the same findings as thallium-201 images in 8 of 10 patients, and SPECT images at 30 minutes after the injection showed reduced accumulation of BMIPP compared with thallium-201 images in all patients. In AMI group, early DECT images showed the same findings as thallium-201 perfusion images in 9 of 11 patients, and SPECT images at 30 minutes after the injection showed reduced accumulation of BMIPP compared with thallium-201 images in 5 of 11 patients. These results indicate that myocardial perfusion can be evaluated in the early image using DECT, in addition to myocardial fatty acid metabolism in the delayed image.

Abstract
We studied initial myocardial uptake and myocardial clearance of 123I-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) in patients with ischemic heart disease of left ventricular dysfunction and dilated cardiomyopathy. Eleven patients with ischemic heart disease of left ventricular dysfunction (IHD group), 6 patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM group) and 7 control cases (control group) were studied. Heart to mediastinum activity ratio (H/M) of early and delayed image was significantly lower in the IHD and DCM groups than in the control group. Although initial myocardial uptake of MIBG showed no significant difference among three groups, myocardial clearance of MIBG was significantly higher in the IHD (35 +/- 11%) and DCM (48 +/- 13%) groups than that in the control group (19 +/- 10%). H/M of delayed image was related to the left ventricular size, initial MIBG uptake and MIBG myocardial clearance. Negative correlation was observed between MIBG myocardial clearance and left ventricular ejection fraction in all cases. In conclusion, initial myocardial uptake of MIBG were not decreased in patients with IHD and DCM. Enhanced myocardial clearance of MIBG was observed not only in patients with DCM but also in patients with IHD.

Abstract
Between October, 1992 and March, 1993, the incidence of bite or scratch by the cat, was surveyed by questionnaire in 1,619 peoples who were veterinarians, veterinary technicians, students and the general population (male 652, female 967). The wound rate by cat: Veterinarians, veterinary technicians, students of veterinary college, students of veterinary technician school were significantly higher than the general population. Incidence of bite or scratch in the cat owner were significantly higher than the non cat owner, and the incidence of wounds in cat owners was more than 90%. Most injuries for veterinarians were of the occupational nature. Their injuries clearly differed from those of the other groups. In our survey 33 cases were suspected to have CSD; 19 of 102 veterinarians, 4 of 45 veterinary technicians, 2 of 517 students of veterinary college, 1 of 400 students of veterinary technicians, 7 of 555 in the general population. Of the seven cases suspected for CSD among the general population, four were proven to have cat-scratches, suggesting that injuries can be prevented by clipping the cat's nails at home. However, most of the injuries suffered by veterinarians are caused by bites, prevention poses a more serious problem. It is therefore important to educate people in all fields to fully understand sanitation and zoonosis including CSD, and teach them to handle their pets appropriately.

Abstract
A method for the fractionation of swine erythrocytes according to age using Percoll is described. Centrifugation of erythrocytes on discontinuous Percoll gradients yielded four fractions of erythrocytes. To ascertain that each fraction of erythrocytes represented a different age group, the activities of hexokinase (Hx), aldolase, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPD), pyruvate kinase (PK), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGD) were determined. These enzyme activities decreased successively from the top to the bottom fractions of the centrifuged column. Young erythrocytes obtained from the upper fractions of the centrifuged column exhibited a higher activity of each enzyme than that found in the heavier and older erythrocytes at the bottom fraction. This method is proposed as the most appropriate for use as an aid in distinguishing the presence of a young erythrocyte population.

Abstract
We described a forty-four-year-old female who was scratched by her cat, and developed lymphadenopathy. Cat scratch disease skin-test was positive. Cat scratch disease is well known, but there are not many reports in Japan. Reports of cat scratch disease will increase as the pathogen was recently detected. Attention must be drawn to zoonosis containing cat scratch disease.

Abstract
To clarify whether sanitary and hygienic conditions surrounding humans and pet animals have improved or not, we examined feces from dogs for intestinal parasites in Tochigi in 1979 and 1991. Intestinal parasites were detected from 109 of the 262 dogs (41.9%) in 1979 and 86 of the 260 dogs (32.8%) in 1991. Among the parasites. Ancylostoma caninum, Tirchuris vulpis and Toxocara canis were most commonly detected, and their detection rates were higher in 1979. On the contrary, Dipylidium caninum, Strongyloides stercoralis, Isospora spp., which are important causes of human diseases, were detected at higher rates in 1991. In the dogs of outdoor feeding, the detection rates of parasites were markedly decreased, but slightly increased in the dogs of indoor feeding in 1991. These results suggest that sanitary conditions surrounding pet animals have not been sufficiently improved, in spite of the fact that humans are in more contact with their pet animals.

Abstract
To obtain the basic data on the route of Giardia infection as zoonosis, of many regions in Japan, the feces from 2218 dogs were examined for detection of Giardia cysts. Giardia cysts were detected in 239 of the 2218 dogs (10.9%), which was the same as previous reports from America. None were found from the owners of 51 dogs in which Giardia cysts were detected. The detection rates of each facilities were, 68 of 366 (18.6%) from the breeder's kennels, 169 of 1811 (9.3%) in individual houses, 2 of 42 (4.9%) from research institutes. The detection rate of the breeder's kennels was higher than the other two facilities (p less than 0.05, p less than 0.001). The detection rates of Kanagawa and Shizuoka prefectures among 17 regions in Japan were higher than the others (p less than 0.001, p less than 0.05). Especially in Shizuoka, the rate of the individual houses was higher than from breeder's kennels. In kanagawa the rates of the individual houses and the breeders kennels were higher than the mean in Japan (p less than 0.001). Therefore one must instruct the breeders when teaching health education to included zoonosis, and that the detection rate of the age groups of less than 3 years old was high-221 of 1276 (17.3%). Since the detection rates of Giardia cysts in the dogs were low, the possibility that human infection acquired from dogs was low. However, some of patients with giardiasis we encountered had never been abroad, and it is not yet clear whether Giardia is strictly host specific or not, so attention should be paid to the possibility of cross-infection between man and animals.

Abstract
Pasteurella multocida is a gram-negative short rod-shaped bacteria, which is a part of the indigenous flora of the oral cavity of many animals other than man. The number of reports on cases of infections with this bacterium due to animal bites and/or scratches, bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, sepsis due to this organism and death caused by the bacteria have been increasing in recent years. We investigated P. multocida in the hair and oral cavity of 3 dogs and 29 cats according to the classification of Mutters et al.. We also studied the relationship between the carrier rate for Pasteurella in the oral cavity and kissing of pets in 24 pet owners (3 dogs and 11 cats). No P. multocida was isolated from the hair of neither dogs nor cats. One strain of P. multocida subsp. multocida and two strains of P. stomatis, were isolated from the oral cavity of dogs, and 35 strains of Pasteurella were isolated from the oral cavity of cats. Two strains of P. multocida subsp. multocida, whose biochemical properties were different, were detected in the oral cavity of one cat. In three cats, Pasteurella other than P. multocida subsp. multocida was isolated from the same oral cavity. No Pasteurella was detected in the oral cavity of 19 pet owners who had not kissed their cats, whereas P. stomatis was isolated from the oral cavity of one of 2 pet owners who had kissed their cats and in 2 of 3 pet owners who had kissed their dogs (the same bacteria was isolated from a dog that was being kept by some of these positive pet owners).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Abstract
To obtain the basic data on the route of Giardia infection as zoonosis, we examined feces from 354 dogs and 34 cats for Giardia cysts and trophozoites and evaluated the detection rates. In addition, the feces of owners of the dogs infected with Giardia were examined. Giardia cysts and trophozoites were detected in 58 of the 354 dogs (16.4%) and 3 of the 34 cats (8.8%). Of the 61 animals from which cysts and trophozoites were isolated, 59 were purchased from the breeders and the other two animals had been kept for examinations in the research institute. None of the owners of the dogs had this infection. This result suggests that the possibility of human infection from contact with infected dogs or cats seems to be very low. However, attention should be paid to the possibility of cross-infection between men and animals, because it is not yet clear whether Giardia is strictly host-specific or not.
