Rare earth elements induced electronic engineering in Rh cluster toward efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

The unique electronic and crystal structures of rare earth metals (RE) offer promising opportunities for enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) properties of materials. In this work, a series of RE (Sm, Nd, Pr and Ho)-doped Rh@NSPC (NSPC stands for N, S co-doped porous carbon nanosheets) with sizes less than 2 nm are prepared, utilizing a simple, rapid and solvent-free joule-heat pyrolysis method for the first time. The optimized Sm-Rh@NSPC achieves HER performance. The high-catalytic performance and stability of Sm-Rh@NSPC are attributed to the synergistic electronic interactions between Sm and Rh clusters, leading to an increase in the electron cloud density of Rh, which promotes the adsorption of H+, the dissociation of Rh-H bonds and the release of H2. Notably, the overpotential of the Sm-Rh@NSPC catalyst is a mere 18.1 mV at current density of 10 mAcm-2, with a Tafel slope of only 15.2 mV dec-1. Furthermore, it exhibits stable operation in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte at 10 mA cm-2 for more than 100 h. This study provides new insights into the synthesis of composite RE hybrid cluster nanocatalysts and their RE-enhanced electrocatalytic performance. It also introduces fresh perspectives for the development of efficient electrocatalysts.

Molybdenum, tungsten doped cobalt phosphides as efficient catalysts for coproduction of hydrogen and formate by glycerol electrolysis

H2 and formate are important energy carriers in fuel-cells and feedstocks in chemical industry. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) coupling with electro-oxidative cleavage of thermodynamically favorable polyols is a promising way to coproduce H2 and formate via electrochemical means, highly active catalysts for HER and electrooxidative cleavage of polycols are the key to achieve such a goal. Herein, molybdenum (Mo), tungsten (W) doped cobalt phosphides (Co2P) deposited onto nickel foam (NF) substrate, denoted as Mo-Co2P/NF and W-Co2P/NF, respectively, were investigated as catalytic electrodes for HER and electrochemical glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) to yield H2 and formate. The W-Co2P/NF electrode exhibited low overpotential (η) of 113 mV to attain a current density (J) of -100 mA cm-2 for HER, while the Mo-Co2P/NF electrode demonstrated high GOR efficiency for selective production of formate. In situ Raman and infrared spectroscopic characterizations revealed that the evolved CoO2 from Co2P is the genuine catalytic sites for GOR. The asymmetric electrolyzer based on W-Co2P/NF cathode and Mo-Co2P/NF anode delivered a J = 100 mA cm-2 at 1.8 V voltage for glycerol electrolysis, which led to 18.2 % reduced electricity consumption relative to water electrolysis. This work highlights the potential of heteroelement doped phosphide in catalytic performances for HER and GOR, and opens up new avenue to coproduce more widespread commodity chemicals via gentle and sustainable electrocatalytic means.

Effect of Stanozolol and/or Cannabis Abuse on Hypertrophic Mechanism and Oxidative Stress of Male Albino Rat Cardiac Tissue in Relation to Exercise: A Sport Abuse Practice

Adolescents commonly co-abuse many drugs including anabolic androgenic steroids either they are athletes or non-athletes. Stanozolol is the major anabolic used in recent years and was reported grouped with cannabis. The current study aimed at evaluating the biochemical and histopathological changes related to the hypertrophic effects of stanozolol and/or cannabis whether in condition of exercise practice or sedentary conditions. Adult male Wistar albino rats received either stanozolol (5 mg/kg, s.c), cannabis (10 mg/kg, i.p.), and a combination of both once daily for two months. Swimming exercise protocol was applied as a training model. Relative heart weight, oxidative stress biomarkers, cardiac tissue fibrotic markers were evaluated. Left ventricular morphometric analysis and collagen quantification was done. The combined treatment exhibited serious detrimental effects on the heart tissues. It increased heart tissue fibrotic markers (Masson's trichrome stain (p < 0.001), cardiac COL3 (p < 0.0001), and VEGF-A (p < 0.05)), lowered heart glutathione levels (p < 0.05) and dramatically elevated oxidative stress (increased malondialdehyde (p < 0.0001) and 8-OHDG (p < 0.0001)). Training was not ameliorating for the observed effects. Misuse of cannabis and stanozolol resulted in more hypertrophic consequences of the heart than either drug alone, which were at least largely assigned to oxidative stress, heart tissue fibrotic indicators, histological alterations, and morphometric changes.

Complementary information concerning the suspected interindividual transmission of GW1516, a substance prohibited in sport, through intimate contact: a case report

PURPOSE

Inadvertent and/or unknowing exposure to drugs and drug residues has been frequently debated in situations of so-called adverse analytical finding (AAF) in the context of sports drug testing programs. Transfer of drug residues via unprotected intercourse is a conceivable scenario but scientific data and authentic case reports are scarce. Herein, investigations into two AAFs with the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor delta (PPARδ) agonist GW1516 are reported and discussed.

METHODS

To probe for a contamination scenario involving sexual intercourse, two assays were used to determine semenogelin in human urine, with one employing an immunochromatographic lateral flow approach and another based on liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Further, drug-residue testing using patients' ejaculate was conducted by utilizing liquid chromatography in conjunction with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer, followed by re-analysis of suspect samples (i.e., samples indicating the presence of relevant compounds) using high resolution/high mass accuracy mass spectrometry.

RESULTS

In one case, but not the other, the possibility of intimate contact as the source of the AAF was confirmed after a thorough investigation of potential contamination scenarios. Subsequent research revealed analytical evidence for the presence of seminal fluid in one of the female athlete's doping control urine samples, and the analysis of clinical ejaculate specimens provided first data on an authentic concentration level of GW1516 and its metabolites in human seminal fluid.

CONCLUSIONS

The combined facts substantiate the possibility of an AAF caused by unprotected sexual intercourse and the plausibility of the case-related arguments.

Surface topography, structural, optical and dc electrical behaviors of pristine and Co-doped ZnS thin films

The prime goal of the present research is to synthesize pristine zinc sulfide (PZS) and cobalt (Co)-doped zinc sulfide (CDZS) thin films with different doping concentrations (DC) via chemical bath deposition (CBD) method. The effect of Co-doping on the surface topography, structural, optical and dc-electrical behaviors of PZS thin films has been ascertained. Scanning electron microscopy images exhibited nearly sphere-shaped agglomerates of grains dispersed throughout the surface with cracks in PZS thin film whereas cracks were absent in CDZS. Atomic force microscopy image displayed smooth surface of CDZS thin film with evenly dispersed small grains. The hexagonal wurtzite structure of PZS and CDZS thin films with varied X-ray diffraction (XRD) parameters was confirmed via XRD analysis. Optical investigation revealed that the optical direct band gap energy increased with decreasing DC from 12 % to 4 %. Alteration of other optical parameters namely absorption coefficient, extinction coefficient, refractive index, real and imaginary parts of dielectric constant, etc. with DC was also discussed. Direct current electrical investigation revealed that the current-voltage characteristics are linear for all thin films signifying that the electrical conduction in CDZS is ohmic in nature.

Rational Design of Cost-Effective Metal-Doped ZrO2 for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

The design of cost-effective electrocatalysts is an open challenging for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to the "stable-or-active" dilemma. Zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), a versatile and low-cost material that can be stable under OER operating conditions, exhibits inherently poor OER activity from experimental observations. Herein, we doped a series of metal elements to regulate the ZrO2 catalytic activity in OER via spin-polarized density functional theory calculations with van der Waals interactions. Microkinetic modeling as a function of the OER activity descriptor (GO*-GHO*) displays that 16 metal dopants enable to enhance OER activities over a thermodynamically stable ZrO2 surface, among which Fe and Rh (in the form of single-atom dopant) reach the volcano peak (i.e. the optimal activity of OER under the potential of interest), indicating excellent OER performance. Free energy diagram calculations, density of states, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations further showed that Fe and Rh are the effective dopants for ZrO2, leading to low OER overpotential, high conductivity, and good stability. Considering cost-effectiveness, single-atom Fe doped ZrO2 emerged as the most promising catalyst for OER. This finding offers a valuable perspective and reference for experimental researchers to design cost-effective catalysts for the industrial-scale OER production.

An original situation of drug transfer where the anti-doping rule violation was suspended by the sport authorities

The presence of ostarine, a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) in an athlete's sample constitutes one of the most frequent anti-doping rules violation. It is possible to challenge this violation but it is the athlete who has to demonstrate he / she is innocent. The conditions to evidence no fault or negligence are mostly based on 2 points: 1. the athlete or his/her legal representative must present verified circumstances of contamination and the source of contamination must be identified; and 2. there must be verified claims by the athlete about the fact that he / she did not knowingly take the prohibited substance, i.e. that the violation was not intentional. During a 2-weeks period, a male athlete tested two times positive for ostarine in urine (<0.1 ng/ml) and he challenged these results. His hair and nail tests returned negative (LOQ at 0.5 pg/mg). He admitted using two neoprene hamstring sleeves of another athlete who confessed abusing ostarine. This was confirmed in his hair (190 pg/mg), his fingernail clippings (780 pg/mg) and his toenail clippings (45 pg/mg). To document the presence of ostarine in the hamstring sleeves and therefore possible drug transfer, the hamstring sleeves were analysed. Ostarine was identified in 12 different selected pieces (about 1 g) of the sleeves at concentrations ranging from 3 to 142 pg/g. Sport authorities (USADA) agreed that the most likely source of contamination was the hamstring sleeves, thus confirming the scenario of drug transfer and gave the athlete a no fault.

Adsorption of Zn atoms by monolayer WS2 doped with different atoms X (X = O, Se, N, P, F, Cl): first principles study

CONTEXT

The effect of X (X = O, Se, N, P, F, Cl) doping on the adsorption of Zn atoms by WS2 was investigated based on first principles. The electronic structure and optical properties of the adsorbed system after atomic doping were calculated. It is found that the Zn atom adsorbed on the W top (Tw) site has the most stable structure. When an S atom is replaced with an X atom based on the adsorption system, where the adsorption energy decreases after doping of O, P, F, and Cl atoms compared to the undoped system, it means that each system is more stable after doping of these atoms; charge transfer shows that the adsorption system after P-atom doping the system around the Zn atom loses electrons while S-atom gains electrons, which indicates that P-atom doping is favorable for the adsorption of Zn by WS2, N, P-atom is introduced as p-type doping and F, Cl-atom is introduced undoped by n-type doping, and the band gap of the doped system is less than that of the undoped one. With the introduction of different dopant atoms, certain impurity energy levels are introduced into the adsorption system. The prohibited bandwidth around the Fermi energy level reduces the density of states, causing the doped system's density of states to shift to lower energies, among which the shifts of N, P, F, and Cl are more pronounced. The P-doped adsorption system shows a new peak near the energy of - 11 eV. In addition, the study of optical properties showed that the peak reflections of both doped and non-doped systems adsorbing Zn atoms appeared in the ultraviolet region; the absorbance coefficient of the doped system is moved in the lower energy direction and red-shifted after atom doping; in addition, the absorption coefficients and reflectance of the P, Se doped systems are enhanced in the wavelength range of 200-300 nm compared with that before doping, the dielectric function and CBM and VBM positions were also calculated further indicating the potential of Se-doped systems in improving photocatalytic efficiency.

METHODS

In this paper, the structure optimization of X (X = O, Se, N, P, F, Cl) doping on WS2 adsorbed Zn atom model is performed based on the CASTEP module in Materials-Studio software under the first principles using GGA and PBE generalized function. The corresponding binding energies, bond lengths, bond angles, charge densities, energy band structures, densities of states, and optical properties were also analyzed. The Monkhorst-Pack particular K-point sampling method is used in the calculations; the K-point grid is 6 × 6 × 1, and the cutoff energy for the plane wave expansion is 500 eV. After geometric optimization, the iterative accuracy converges to a value of less than 1 × 10-5 eV/atom for the total energy of each atom and less than 0.03 eV/Å for all atomic forces. The thickness of the vacuum layer was set to 20 Å to avoid the effect of interlayer interaction forces. In this paper, 27 atoms were used to form a 3 × 3 × 1 supercellular tungsten disulfide system consisting of 18 S atoms and 9 W atoms.

Effect of compressive strain on electronic and optical properties of Cr-doped monolayer WS2

CONTEXT

The electronic properties and optical properties of Cr-doped monolayer WS2 under uniaxial compressive deformation have been investigated based on density functional theory. In terms of electronic structure properties, both intrinsic and doped system bandgaps decrease with the increase of compression deformation, and the values of the bandgap under the same compression deformation after Cr doping are reduced compared with the corresponding intrinsic states. When the compressive deformation reaches 10%, both the intrinsic and doped system band gaps are close to zero. New electronic states and impurity energy levels appear in the WS2 system when doped with Cr atoms. For the optical properties, the calculation and analysis of the dielectric function under each deformation regime of monolayer WS2 show that the compression deformation affects the dielectric function, and when the compression deformation is 10%, the un-doped and Cr-doped regimes show a decrease in ε1(ω) compared to the compression deformation of 8%. For each deformation system, the peak reflections occur in the ultraviolet region. Near the position where the second peak of the absorption spectrum appears, it can be seen that the ability of each system to absorb light gradually decreases with the increase of the amount of deformation and appears to be red-shifted to varying degrees.

METHODS

This study follows the initial principles of the density functional theory framework and is based on the CASTEP module of Materials-Studio software GGA and PBE generalizations are used to perform computations such as geometry optimization of the model. We have calculated the energy band structure of monolayer WS2 with intrinsic and compressive deformations of 2% and 4% using PBE and HSE06, respectively. The band gap values calculated using PBE are 1.802 eV, 1.663 eV, and 1.353 eV, respectively, and the band gap values calculated with HSE06 are 2.267 eV, 2.034 eV, 1.751 eV. The results show that the bandgap values calculated by HSE06 are significantly higher than those calculated by PBE, but the bandgap variations calculated by the two methods have the same trend, and the shape characteristics of the energy band structure are also the same. However, it is worth noting that the computation time required for the HSE06 calculation is much longer than that of the PBE, which is far beyond the capability of our computer hardware, and the purpose of this paper is to investigate the change rule of the effect of deformation on the bandgap value, so to save the computational resources, the next calculations are all calculated using the PBE. The Monkhorst-Pack special K-point sampling method is used in the calculations. The cutoff energy for the plane wave expansion is 400 eV, and the K-point grid is assumed to be 5 × 5 × 1. Following geometric optimization, the iterative precision converges to a value of less than 0.03 eV/Å for all atomic forces and at least 1 × 10-5 eV/atom for the total energy of each atom. The vacuum layer's thickness was selected at 20 Å to mitigate the impact of the interlayer contact force.

Improved Conductivity and in Situ Formed Heterojunction via Zinc Doping in CuBi2O4 for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

As a photocathode with a band gap of about 1.8 eV, copper bismuthate (CuBi2O4) is a promising material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. However, weak charge transfer capability and severe carrier recombination suppress the PEC performance of CuBi2O4. In this paper, the conductivity and carriers transport of CuBi2O4 are improved via introducing Zn2+ into the synthesis precursor of CuBi2O4, driving a beneficial 110 mV positive shift of onset potential in photocurrent. Detailed investigations demonstrate that the introduction of an appropriate amount of zinc leads to in situ segregation of ZnO which serves as an electron transport channel on the surface of CuBi2O4, forming heterojunctions. The synergistic effect of heterojunctions and doping simultaneously promotes the charge transfer and the carrier concentration. OCP experiment proves that ZnO/Zn-CuBi2O4 possesses better charge separation; the Mott-Schottky curve shows that the doping of Zn significantly enhances the carrier concentration; carrier lifetime calculated from time-resolved photoluminescence confirms faster extraction of carriers.

LC-MS/MS measurement of endogenous steroid hormones and phase II metabolites in blood volumetric absorptive microsampling (VAMS) for doping control purposes

BACKGROUND

Volumetric Absorptive Microsampling (VAMS) is emerging as a valuable technique in the collection of dried biological specimens, offering a potential alternative to traditional sampling methods. The objective of this study was to assess the suitability of 30 μL VAMS for the measurement of endogenous steroid hormones.

METHODS

A novel LC-MS/MS method was developed for the quantification of 18 analytes in VAMS samples, including main endogenous free steroids and phase II metabolites of androgens. The method underwent validation in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) requirements. Subsequently, it was applied to authentic VAMS samples obtained from 20 healthy volunteers to assess the stability of target analytes under varying storage conditions.

RESULTS

The validation protocol assessed method's selectivity, matrix effect, extraction recovery, quantitative performance, carry-over and robustness. The analysis of authentic samples demonstrated the satisfactory stability of monitored steroids in VAMS stored at room temperature, 4 °C, -20 °C and -80 °C for up to 100 days and subjected to up to 3 freezing-thawing cycles.

CONCLUSIONS

The validated LC-MS/MS method demonstrated its suitability for the measurement of steroids in dried blood VAMS. The observed stability of steroidal compounds suggests promising prospects for future applications of VAMS, both in anti-doping contexts and clinical research.

Body fluid contamination in the context of an adverse analytical finding in doping: About a case involving ostarine

Ostarine, also known as MK-2866 or enobosarm, is a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM). It has anabolic properties and as such is widely used in doping, accounting in 2021 for 25 % of the adverse analytical findings (AAF) among the class S1.2 "Other anabolic agents" of products banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, to which it belongs. But in some cases, it can be responsible for an AAF following contamination. We report the case of an athlete who contaminated herself by exchanging body fluids while kissing her boyfriend, who took 25 mg per day of MK-2866 for 9 days prior to the athlete's AAF (urinary concentration evaluated at 13 ng/mL) without her knowledge. Both subjects came to our lab for hair testing. The athlete's hair was black and slightly frizzy. Six segments of 2 cm then 7 × 3 cm (33 cm) were analysed and showed increasing concentrations, from 2 pg/mg on the first segment to 17.8 pg/mg on the last segment. The boyfriend's hair, light-brown, analyzed on 4 × 2 cm, also showed increasing values, from 65 to 143 pg/mg. These gradients of concentration in the hair's athlete and in her boyfriend were compatible with external contamination of the hair, confirmed by analysis of washing baths, pillowcases (150 pg on each), and the athlete's hairbrush (250 pg). Fingernails were also contaminated, with 21 pg/mg in the athlete and 1041 pg/mg in the boyfriend, with highly contaminated washing baths, and toenails were less contaminated, with 2 pg/mg in the athlete and 17.3 pg/mg in the boyfriend. Urine samples taken 35 days after the start of MK-2866 treatment showed a value of 3690 ng/mL in the boyfriend and 5.7 ng/mL in the athlete. After 6 days off, these concentrations were 3.3 ng/mL and 0.1 ng/mL, respectively. A controlled transfer study was carried out 12 days after discontinuation (urine concentrations returned to negative level). After administration of 17 mg (the 25 mg/mL vial having been controlled at 17 mg/mL), urine samples were taken from the boyfriend and the athlete (n = 10 for each) for more than 25 h after they had been living normally with each other (regular kissing in particular). The boyfriend's urine concentrations ranged from 681 ng/mL to 12822 ng/mL (Tmax = 8:30 hrs), and the athlete's from 0.3 ng/mL to 13 ng/mL with Tmax = 8:30 hrs, i.e. at 22:30 hrs, which corresponded exactly to the time of collection of the urine that showed AAF, with a similar concentration. The dose ingested by the athlete was estimated at 15 µg. These results demonstrate the transfer of ostarine via body fluids between two subjects, with a high risk of AAF in one athlete, as observed in our case.

Evidence of ostarine excretion in oral fluid after a single controlled oral administration

The presence of ostarine, a selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) in an athlete's urine specimen constitutes one of the most frequent anti-doping rules violation as the drug is listed as a member of the S1.2 class "other anabolic agents" of the World Anti-doping Agency Prohibited List, forbidden in- and out-competition. It is possible to challenge this violation but it is at the charge of the athlete to prove innocence. The conditions to evidence no fault or negligence are mostly based on 2 points: 1. the athlete must present verified circumstances of contamination and the source of contamination must be identified; and 2. there must be verified claims by the athlete that the violation was not intentional. Some months before the Olympic games, a female athlete was suspended by a national anti-doping agency because of an adverse analytical finding for ostarine. She claimed that her violation was due to drug transfer when kissing her boyfriend, who did not inform her about his ostarine daily intake. To document this claim (excretion of ostarine in oral fluid in sufficient amounts), a male volunteer ingested 17.3 mg of ostarine (dose verified by 1H NMR). Oral fluid was collected over 8 h using the NeoSal™ collection device and was tested by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. Maximal ostarine concentration was 468 ng/mL at T + 15 min, which can also be partially attributed to mouth contamination. Ostarine was detectable during the whole period of test, with concentrations at 1-2 ng/mL after T + 4 h. These results support drug transfer during kissing and subsequent possible contamination of the partner.

Morphology design and electronic configuration of MoSe2 anchored on TiO2 nanospheres for high energy density sodium-ion half/full batteries

Molybdenum selenide (MoSe2) has shown potential sodium storage properties due to its large layer spacing (0.646 nm) and high theoretical capacity and narrow band gap. However, as the anode material of sodium ion batteries (SIBs), the MoSe2's performance is not ideal, especially due to the layer agglomeration and stacking caused by volume expansion and low intrinsic conductivity. Hence, morphology design and electronic configuration of MoSe2 is proposed via building MoSe2 nanosheets and auxiliary sulfur doping on the surface of the TiO2 hollow nanosphere (S-MoSe2@TiO2). The hierarchical shaped S-MoSe2@TiO2 effectively overcomes the shortcomings of high surface energy and weak interlayer van der Waals force of MoSe2. As anode for SIBs, S-MoSe2@TiO2 delivers enhanced cycling life and rate capability (308 mAh/g at 10 A/g after 1000 cycles) with the comparison of MoSe2@TiO2 or pure MoSe2 and TiO2. Such excellent sodium storage performance is due to the fast diffusion kinetics of Na+. When it is applied in sodium ion full batteries, the S-MoSe2@TiO2 anode based cell can reach a high energy density of 187.8 W h kg-1 at 148.3 W kg-1. The design of the new MoSe2-based hybrid provides a novel scheme for the preparation of advanced anode in SIBs.

Carbon quantum dots modified and Y3+ doped Ni3(NO3)2(OH)4 nanospheres with excellent battery-like supercapacitor performance

Supercapacitor is an important energy storage device widely used in the automobile industry, military production, and communication equipment because of its fast charge-discharge rate, and high power density. Herein, carbon quantum dots modified and Y3+ doped Ni3(NO3)2(OH)4 (NiY@CQDs) nanospheres are prepared by a solvothermal method and used as an electrode material. The electrochemical properties of NiY@CQDs were measured in a three-electrode system. An asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) cell was assembled with activated carbon (AC) as the anode and NiY@CQDs as the cathode. The electrochemical properties of the ASC device were measured in a two-electrode system. Experimental results show the shape of NiY@CQDs is petal-shaped and the introducing carbon quantum dots and doping Y3+ significantly increases the specific surface area, conductivity, and specific capacitance of Ni3(NO3)2(OH)4. The mass-specific capacitance of NiY@CQDs reaches up to 2944 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1. The asymmetric supercapacitor of NiY@CQDs//AC has a high energy density of 138.65 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 1500 W kg-1, displaying a wide range of application prospects in the energy storage area.

Perovskite Oxides Toward Oxygen Evolution Reaction: Intellectual Design Strategies, Properties and Perspectives

Developing electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices (e.g., water splitting, regenerative fuel cells and rechargeable metal-air batteries) driven by intermittent renewable energy sources holds a great potential to facilitate global energy transition and alleviate the associated environmental issues. However, the involved kinetically sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) severely limits the entire reaction efficiency, thus designing high-performance materials toward efficient OER is of prime significance to remove this obstacle. Among various materials, cost-effective perovskite oxides have drawn particular attention due to their desirable catalytic activity, excellent stability and large reserves. To date, substantial efforts have been dedicated with varying degrees of success to promoting OER on perovskite oxides, which have generated multiple reviews from various perspectives, e.g., electronic structure modulation and heteroatom doping and various applications. Nonetheless, the reviews that comprehensively and systematically focus on the latest intellectual design strategies of perovskite oxides toward efficient OER are quite limited. To bridge the gap, this review thus emphatically concentrates on this very topic with broader coverages, more comparative discussions and deeper insights into the synthetic modulation, doping, surface engineering, structure mutation and hybrids. More specifically, this review elucidates, in details, the underlying causality between the being-tuned physiochemical properties [e.g., electronic structure, metal-oxygen (M-O) bonding configuration, adsorption capacity of oxygenated species and electrical conductivity] of the intellectually designed perovskite oxides and the resulting OER performances, coupled with perspectives and potential challenges on future research. It is our sincere hope for this review to provide the scientific community with more insights for developing advanced perovskite oxides with high OER catalytic efficiency and further stimulate more exciting applications.

Unlocking High-Current Performance in Silicon Anode: Synergistic Phosphorus Doping and Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Encapsulation to Enhance Lithium Diffusivity

The silicon (Si) offers enormous theoretical capacity as a lithium-ion battery (LIB) anode. However, the low charge mobility in Si particles hinders its application for high current loading. In this study, ball-milled phosphorus-doped Si nanoparticles encapsulated with nitrogen-doped carbon (P-Si@N-C) are employed as an anode for LIBs. P-doped Si nanoparticles are first obtained via ball-milling and calcination of Si with phosphoric acid. N-doped carbon encapsulation is then introduced via carbonization of the surfactant-assisted polymerization of pyrrole monomer on P-doped Si. While P dopant is required to support the stability at high current density, the encapsulation of Si particles with N-doped carbon is influential in enhancing the overall Li+ diffusivity of the Si anode. The combined approaches improve the anode's Li+ diffusivity up to tenfold compared to the untreated anode. It leads to exceptional anode stability at a high current, retaining 87 % of its initial capacity under a large current rate of 4000 mA g-1. The full-cell comprising P-Si@N-C anode and LiFePO4 cathode demonstrates 94 % capacity retention of its initial capacity after 100 cycles at 1 C. This study explores the effective strategies to improve Li+ diffusivity for high-rate Si-based anode.

Enhanced photocatalytic ammonia oxidation activity and nitrogen selectivity over Ag/AgCl/N-TiO2 photocatalyst

The removal of ammonia (NH3) emitted from agricultural and industrial activities is of great significance to protect human health and ecological environment. Photocatalytic NH3 oxidation to N2 under mild conditions is a promising strategy. However, developing visible light photocatalysts for NH3 oxidation is still in its infancy. Here, we fabricate N-TiO2 and Ag/AgCl/N-TiO2 photocatalysts by sol-gel and photodeposition methods, respectively. The introduction of N not only endows TiO2 with visible light response (absorption edge at 460 nm) but also results in the formation of heterophase junction (anatase and rutile). Thus, N-TiO2 shows 2.0 and 1.8 times higher than those over anatase TiO2 and commercial TiO2 for NH3 oxidation under full spectrum irradiation. Meanwhile, surface modification of Ag can simultaneously enhance visible light absorption (generating localized surface plasmon resonance effect) and charge separation efficiency. Therefore, the photocatalytic activity of Ag/AgCl/N-TiO2 is further improved. Furthermore, the presence of N and Ag also enhances the selectivity of N2 product owing to the change of reaction pathway. This work simultaneously regulates photocatalytic conversion efficiency and product selectivity, providing some guidance for developing highly efficient photocatalysts for NH3 elimination.

Chemical modification and doping of poly(p-phenylenes): A theoretical study

CONTEXT

Conjugated polymers (CPs) have been recognized as promising materials for the manufacture of electronic devices. However, further studies are still needed to enhance the electrical conductivity of these type of organic materials. The two main strategies for achieving this improvement are the doping process and chemical modification of the polymer chain. Therefore, in this article, we conduct a theoretical investigation, employing DFT calculations to evaluate the structural, energetic, and electronic properties of pristine and push-pull-derived poly(p-phenylene) oligomers (PPPs), as well as the analysis at the molecular level of the polymer doping process. As a primary conclusion, we determined that the PPP oligomer substituted with the push-pull group 4-EtN/CNPhNO2 exhibited the smallest HOMO-LUMO gap (Eg) among the studied oligomers. Moreover, we observed that the doping process, whether through electron removal or the introduction of the dopant anion ClO4-, led to a substantial reduction in the Eg of the PPP, indicating an enhancement in the polymer's electrical conductivity.

METHODS

DFT calculations were conducted using the PBE0 functional along with the Pople's split valence 6-31G(d,p) basis set, which includes polarization functions on all atoms (B97D/6-31G(d,p)).

Atomically dispersed silver atoms incorporated in spinel cobalt oxide (Co3O4) for boosting oxygen evolution reaction

Incorporating noble metal single atoms into lattice of spinel cobalt oxide (Co3O4) is an attractive way to fabricate oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts because of the high activity and economic benefit. The commonly used high valence noble metal dopants such as ruthenium, iridium and rhodium tend to supersede Co3+ at octahedral site of Co3O4 and result in great activity, the origins of admirable activity were also wildly investigated. However, bare explorations on doping noble metal single atom into tetrahedral site of Co3O4 to construct OER catalyst have been reported, corresponding catalytic activity and mechanism remain mystery. Here, a promising structure that tetrahedrally substituent Ag single atom embedded in Co3O4 nanoparticles on the surface of carbon nanotube (Ag-Co3O4/CNT) was presented, and its performance in OER was probed. The high angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) demonstrate the successful embeddedness of atomical Ag atom in Co3O4 lattice, the resultant electronic interaction is conducive to promote charge transfer for OER. Theoretical calculations further disclose that atomical Ag dopant prefers to replace tetrahedral Co2+ rather than octahedral Co3+. The substitution Ag acts as the active site through Ag-Co bridge and facilitates the desorption process, which improves the turnover frequency (TOF) and boosts the intrinsic activity of Ag-Co3O4/CNT. Benefiting from the essentials above, Ag-Co3O4/CNT displays remarkable activity (236 mV@10 mA cm-2) and robust stability for alkaline OER. This finding offers a potential direction for the design of noble metal single atom involved Co3O4 based OER electrocatalysts.

Development of novel paper-based supercapacitor electrode material by combining copper-cellulose fibers with polyaniline

Along with the developing of flexible electronics, there is a strong interest in high performance flexible energy storage materials. As natural carbohydrate polymer, cellulose fibers have potential applications in the area due to their biodegradability and flexibility. However, their conductive and electrochemical properties are impossible to meet the demands of practical applications. In this study, cellulose fibers were combined with polyaniline to develop novel paper-based supercapacitor electrode material. Cellulose fibers were firstly coordinated to Cu(II) and subsequently involved in polymerization of polyaniline. Not only the mass loading of polyaniline was significantly increased, but also an impressive area specific capacitance (2767 mF/cm2 at 1 mA/cm2) was achieved. The developed strategy is efficient, environmentally friendly, and has implications for the development of cellulosic paper-based advanced functional materials.

Androgenic steroid excess in women

Excessive use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) in sport occurs among professional athletes but increasingly also in amateurs. Prevalence of steroid use has been on the rise for a number of years. While the practice involves mostly men, it also occurs in women with an estimated prevalence of 1.6%. Since 2014, a 'steroid passport' has operated for sports people in competition that is based on longitudinal urinary and blood steroid levels, measured by liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Androgen excess stimulates muscle growth and improves muscle performance. However, their consumption carries numerous side effects, including myocardial hypertrophy; altered lipid metabolism and pro-thrombotic effects. The excess of AAS is associated with increased risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events. Data for their effects in women is lacking. Perturbations of the menstrual cycle are common in female athletes, with spaniomenorrhea and even amenorrhea. This can be a consequence of gonadotropin insufficiency due to negative caloric balance, but may also be due to endogenous or exogenous hyperandrogenism. The use of AAS is probably underestimated as a public health issue, particularly in women, and thus presents a prevention challenge for healthcare professionals.

Removal of sulfonylurea herbicides with g-C3N4-based photocatalysts: A review

The accumulation of agricultural chemicals in the environment has become a global concern, of which sulfonylurea herbicides (SUHs) constitute a significant category. Solar-driven photocatalysis is favored for removing organic pollutants due to its high efficiency and environmental friendliness. Graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based materials with superior catalytic activities and physicochemical stabilities are promising photocatalysts. This review describes the g-C3N4-based materials and their uses in the photocatalytic degradation of SUHs or other organic pollutants with similar structures. First, the fundamentals of g-C3N4-based materials and photocatalytic SUHs degradation are discussed to provide an in-depth understanding of the mechanism for the photocatalytic activity. The ability of different g-C3N4-based materials to photocatalytically degrade SUH-like structures is then discussed and summarized based on different modification strategies (morphology modulation, elemental doping, defect engineering, and heterojunction formations). Meanwhile, the effects of different environmental factors on the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4-based materials are described. Finally, the major challenges and opportunities of g-C3N4-based materials for the photocatalytic degradation of SUHs are proposed. It is hoped that this review will show the feasibility of photocatalytic degradation of SUHs with g-C3N4-based materials.

Localized surface plasmon resonance sensing of Trenbolone acetate dopant using silver nanoparticles

In this work, localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) sensing as applicable in the detection of Trenbolone acetate dopant is demonstrated. We show that the LSPR of the Trenbolone acetate/silver nanoparticle (Tren Ac/AgNPs) complex is sensitive to changes in the adsorbent concentration. The results show an average redshift of + 18 nm in the LSPR peak with variations in intensity and broadening behavior of the LSPR band of the Tren Ac/AgNPs complex. AgNPs were synthesized using laser ablation in liquid (LAL) technique with water as the solvent. UV-Vis spectroscopy was used for absorbance measurements and particle size and morphology were monitored using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The aggregation behavior of the Tren Ac/AgNPs complex was monitored using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Molecular Electrostatic Potential (MEP) and the HOMO-LUMO orbitals of the optimized Trenbolone acetate structure were obtained using Density Function Theory (DFT). The molecule was optimized at the B3LYP level of theory using the 6-311 basis set carried out using the Gaussian 09 software package. The results showed that O2- is Trenbolone acetate's active site that would interact with Ag+ to form a complex that would influence the plasmon behavior. The results presented in this work demonstrate the feasibility of LSPR for anabolic androgenic steroid detection.

Chemical reactivity of graphene doped with 3d transition metals: nothing compares to a single vacancy

CONTEXT

Finding catalysts that do not rely on the use of expensive metals is one of the requirements to achieve sustainable production. The reactivity of graphene doped with 3d transition metals was studied. All dopants enhanced the reactivity of graphene and performed better than Stone-Wales defects and divacancies, but were inferior to monovacancies. For hydrogenation of doped-monovacancies, Sc, Ti, Cr, Co, and Ni induced more prominent reactivity on the carbon atoms. However, the metals were the most reactive center for V, Mn, and Fe-doped graphene. Cu and Zn turned the four neighboring carbon atoms into the preferred sites for hydrogenation. The addition of oxygen to doped graphene with Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, and Ni on a monovacancy revealed a more uniform pattern since the metal, preferred to react with oxygen. However, Sc induced a larger reactivity on the carbon atoms. The affinity of the 3d metal-doped graphene systems towards oxygen was inferior to that observed for single-vacancies. Therefore, vacancy engineering is the most favorable and least expensive method to enhance the reactivity of graphene.

METHODS

We applied Truhlar's M06-L method accompanied by the 6-31G* basis sets to perform periodic boundary conditions calculations as implemented in Gaussian 09. The ultrafine grid was employed and the unit cells were sampled employing 100 k-points. Results were visualized employing Gaussview 5.0.1.

High efficiency adsorption of uranium by magnesia-silica-fluoride co-doped hydroxyapatite

Hydroxyapatite has a high affinity to uranium, and element doping can effectively improve its adsorption performance. In this study, magnesia-silica-fluoride co-doped hydroxyapatite composite was prepared by hydrothermal method, and the effect of single-phase and multiphase doping on the structure and properties of the composites was investigated. The results showed that the specific surface area of Mg-Si-F-nHA composites increased by 63.01% after doping. Comparing with nHA, U(VI) adsorption capacity of Si-nHA, Mg-Si-nHA and Mg-Si-F-nHA composites increased by 13.01%, 17.39% and 22.03%, respectively. The adsorption capacity of Mg-Si-F-nHA composite reached 1286.76 mg/g. Adsorbent dosage and pH obviously affected U(VI) adsorption, and the experimental data can be fitted well by PSO and Sips models. The physicochemical characterization before and after adsorption suggested that complexation, ion exchange and precipitation participated in uranium adsorption. In conclusion, different elements doping can effectively improve the uranium adsorption properties of hydroxyapatite composites.

The Guidelines for the Design and Synthesis of Transition Metal Atom Doped Carbon Dots

Atoms doping is a practical approach to modulate the physicochemical properties of carbon dots (CDs) and thus has garnered increasing attention in recent years. Compared to non-metal atoms, transition metal atoms (TMAs) possess more unoccupied orbitals and larger atomic radii. TMAs doping can significantly alter the electronic structure of CDs and bestow them with new intrinsic characteristics. TMAs-doped CDs have exhibited widespread application potential as a new class of single-atom-based nanomaterials. However, challenges remain for the successful preparation and precise design of TMAs-doped CDs. The key to successfully preparing TMA-doped CDs lies in anchoring TMAs to the carbon precursors before the reaction. Herein, taking the formation mechanism of TMAs-doped CDs as a starting point, we systematically summarized the ligands employed for synthesizing TMAs-doped CDs and proposed the synthetic strategy involving multiple ligands. Additionally, we summarize the functional properties imparted to CDs by different TMA dopants to guide the design of TMA-doped CDs with different functional characteristics. Finally, we describe the bottlenecks TMAs-doped CDs face and provide an outlook on their future development.

Exploring the structural, electronic, and hydrogen storage properties of hexagonal boron nitride and carbon nanotubes: insights from single-walled to doped double-walled configurations

This study investigates the structural intricacies and properties of single-walled nanotubes (SWNT) and double-walled nanotubes (DWNT) composed of hexagonal boron nitride (BN) and carbon (C). Doping with various atoms including light elements (B, N, O) and heavy metals (Fe, Co, Cu) is taken into account. The optimized configurations of SWNT and DWNT, along with dopant positions, are explored, with a focus on DWNT-BN-C. The stability analysis, employing binding energies, affirms the favorable formation of nanotube structures, with DWNT-C emerging as the most stable compound. Quantum stability assessments reveal significant intramolecular charge transfer in specific configurations. Electronic properties, including charge distribution, electronegativity, and electrical conductivity, are examined, showcasing the impact of doping. Energy gap values highlight the diverse electronic characteristics of the nanotubes. PDOS analysis provides insights into the contribution of atoms to molecular orbitals. UV-Vis absorption spectra unravel the optical transitions, showcasing the influence of nanotube size, dopant type, and location. Hydrogen storage capabilities are explored, with suitable adsorption energies indicating favorable hydrogen adsorption. The desorption temperatures for hydrogen release vary across configurations, with notable enhancements in specific doped DWNT-C variants, suggesting potential applications in high-temperature hydrogen release. Overall, this comprehensive investigation provides valuable insights into the structural, electronic, optical, and hydrogen storage properties of BN and C nanotubes, laying the foundation for tailored applications in electronics and energy storage.

First-principles study of the effects of doping B, N, and O on the photoelectric properties of Cr adsorbed GaS

CONTEXT

To lessen the impact of the dangerous metal Cr, this paper applies the first principles to investigate the adsorption behavior and photoelectric properties of GaS on Cr. The effects of doped GaS on Cr adsorption behavior are investigated with four GaS systems, which are pure, boron (B)-doped, nitrogen (N)-doped, and oxygen (O)-doped, in order to maximize the characteristics of GaS for use in novel sectors, to obtain understanding of the impact of doping on the electronic structure and optical properties of GaS adsorption of Cr, as well as to promote the development of the material. Four GaS adsorbed Cr systems, pure, B-doped, N-doped, and O-doped, are optimized, and the optimized results show that the stable adsorption position of Cr on both pure and doped GaS is the top position of Ga atoms, whereas doped elements B, N, and O can promote the adsorption of Cr on GaS, and the order of the strength of this promotion is B > N > O.

METHOD

In this paper, molecular simulation calculations and analyses using the CASTEP module in the software Materials Studio are performed to simulate the structure optimization of GaS-adsorbed Cr materials doped with B, N, and O atoms by using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) plane-wave pseudopotential approach [1] and the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) generalized function [2]. From the convergence test, it is reasonable to set the K-point network to 4 × 4 × 1 and the truncation energy to 500 eV [3]. In this paper, a 3 × 3 × 1 supercell structure with 18 S atoms and 18 Ga atoms is selected. The convergence value of the iterative accuracy is 1.0e - 5 eV/atom, and all the atomic forces are less than 0.02 eV/Å. A vacuum layer of 16 Å is also set in the C direction to avoid interlayer interactions of GaS. First, we optimize the geometry of the model and then analyze the nature of the adsorption energy and electronic structure corresponding to the model.

Testing for clomiphene in keratinous matrices using LC-MS/MS in doping purpose: Is a single intake of clomiphene detectable in hair and nail clippings?

Clomiphene is a selective estrogen receptor modulator. It is indicated for the treatment of female infertility issues but in sport, it can be misused to stimulate endogenous testosterone secretion in men. Therefore, it has been prohibited at all times by the World Anti-doping Agency. The aim of this study was to get data to be able to interpret concentrations in athletes. A healthy volunteer (male, 62 years-old) ingested a single therapeutic dose of clomiphene (Clomid™, 50 mg). Strands of hair (blond, 4 cm) were collected one month after the ingestion. Body hair (beard, axillary, pubic and chest hair), and finger and toenails were collected over 4-5 months. A previous method was modified to identify and quantify clomiphene in keratinous matrices. 30 mg of specimen were sonicated and incubated in 1 mL of methanol, in presence of 200 pg of clomiphene-D5 (internal standard). After centrifugation and evaporation of the organic phase, the samples were analyzed using LC-MS/MS. Linearity was verified in hair and nail clippings between 1 and 500 pg/mg. The limits of detection and quantification were determined at 0.3 and 1 pg/mg respectively. The study demonstrated that clomiphene tested positive in all the analyzed specimens at 9 pg/mg in head hair, from 28 to 486 pg/mg (body hair) and from 4 to 57 pg/mg (nails). Clomiphene was identified for the first time in multiple keratinous matrices. This study demonstrated that a single oral therapeutic dose is detectable in keratinous matrices over a long period of time.

Hair and dietary supplements testing to identify contamination with roxadustat in an adverse analytical finding

Roxadustat is an oral inhibitor of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) prolyl hydroxylase, which increases endogenous erythropoiesis. WADA has included roxadustat and other HIF stabilizers on its list of prohibited substances. We describe here the case of an elite athlete (female, 31 years old, 168 cm and 53 kg) with an adverse analytical finding (AAF) with concentration of roxadustat in her urine at 0.289 ng/mL in the A sample and 0.529 ng/mL in the B sample (83% higher than A). A stability study was carried out, showing total stability of roxadustat at this concentration in urine exposed to light for 50 h, so photoisomerization degradation cannot explain the difference in concentration. Her urine had been completely negative in a control test carried out three days previously, while roxadustat had been shown to be present in urine for at least 20 days after administration of pharmacologically effective doses to an athlete. Hair concentration was 0.39 and 0.35 pg/mg in the segments corresponding to the presumed period of intake, with few adjacent segments also positive (0.29-0.33 pg/mg), likely explained by cosmetic treatments. Concentrations found in a patient treated with a pharmacologically active dose (between 100 and 120 mg 3 days a week) were more than 100 times higher (between 41 and 57 pg/mg). Numerous supplements and pharmaceuticals taken by the athlete were analyzed. Only collagen powder showed the presence of roxadustat, at a very low but highly variable concentration (100 pg/g-1000 pg/g). A female volunteer (58 years old, 169 cm and 65 kg), taking this powder at the same doses as the athlete (10 g of powder 5 times for 6 days) presented 7 roxadustat-positive urine samples (although lower than those observed in the athlete) out of 34 sampled over 7 days, the difference in powder sampling location, age, weight, height, pharmacokinetic parameters variability and level of sporting activity between the athlete and the volunteer probably explaining the difference in concentrations observed. All these results could be consistent with an AAF due to contamination by dietary supplements, which are becoming increasingly common due to the current exposome of athletes in our society.

Application of a bar adsorptive microextraction based methodology for doping control of alkylamine stimulants in urine matrices

To comply with 'World Anti-Doping Agency' (WADA) guidelines, doping control laboratories must continuously adjust their analytical procedures. Therefore, sample preparation continues to play a critical step in modern analytical strategies, namely by replacing the tedious, time and solvent consuming commonly employed (e.g. liquid-liquid extraction). The present contribution proposes, for the first time in doping control, bar adsorptive microextraction (BAμE) as an alternative analytical technique for the qualitative determination of six alkyl amine stimulants (AAs; 1,3-dimethylbutylamine, 1,4-dimethylpentylamine, heptaminol, isometheptene, octodrine and tuaminoheptane) in urine matrices followed by derivatization prior to gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, operating in the selected ion monitoring mode acquisition (GC-MS(SIM)). After selecting the most selective coating phase, i.e., a mixed-mode reversed phase/strong anion exchange sorbent (P2), assays performed under optimized experimental conditions [microextraction - BAμE(P2), 1 h (1,000 rpm), pH 11, 10 % NaCl; back-extraction - methanol (150 μL), 30 min, under sonication], allowed remarkable recoveries ranging from 48.7 % (heptaminol, 200 ng/mL) to 83.1 % (1,4-dimethylpentylamine, 200 ng/mL). The validation assessment assays of the proposed methodology showed suitable limits of identification (5.0-35.0 ng/mL), appropriate linear dynamic ranges (5.0-200.0 ng/mL) and good determination coefficients (r2 > 0.9937), as well as excellent selectivity, robustness, accuracy and precision. To check whether the methodology is fit-for-purpose, four previously analysed proficiency urine samples were successfully tested, in which were unequivocally detected and identified some of the target AAs. The present methodology showed to be a remarkable alternative in comparison to other dedicated analytical approaches to screen AAs in urine matrices, since it is cost-effective, user- and eco-friendly, requiring low volume of urine sample (1 mL). The great potential of this analytical technology in doping control lies in a very effective microextraction combined with the minimization of potential interferents, presenting itself as an added value to be applied to other types of substances and complex matrices.

Mechanistic exploration of Co doping in optimizing the electrochemical performance of 2H-MoS2/N-doped carbon anode for potassium-ion battery

The 2H-MoS2/nitrogen-doped carbon (2H-MoS2/NC) composite is a promising anode material for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Various transition metal doping has been adopted to optimize the poor intrinsic electronic conductivity and lack of active sites in the intralayer of 2H-MoS2. However, its optimization mechanisms have not been well probed. In this paper, using Cobalt (Co) as an example, we aim to investigate the influence of transition metal doping on the electronic and mechanical properties and electrochemical performance of 2H-MoS2/NC via first-principles calculation. Co doping is found to be effective in improving the electronic conductivity and the areas of active sites on different positions (C surface, interface, and MoS2 surface) of 2H-MoS2/NC. The increased active sites can optimize K adsorption and diffusion capability/processes, where general smaller K adsorption energies and diffusion energy barriers are found after Co doping. This helps improve the rate performance. Especially, the pyridinic N (pyN), pyrrolic N (prN), and graphitic N (grN) are first unveiled to respectively work best in K kinetic adsorption, diffusion, and interfacial stability. These findings are instructive to experimental design of high rate 2H-MoS2/NC electrode materials. The roles of different N types provide new ideas for optimal design of other functional composite materials.

Applying a systems thinking lens to anti-doping: A systematic review identifying the contributory factors to doping in sport

The use of performance enhancing substances and methods (known as "doping") in sport is an intractable issue, with current anti-doping strategies predominantly focused on the personal responsibility and strict liability of individual athletes. This is despite an emerging understanding that athletes exist as part of a broader complex sports system that includes governance, policymakers, media, sponsors, clubs, team members, and athlete support staff, to name a few. As such, there is a need to examine the broader systemic factors that influence doping in sport. The aim of this systematic review was to identify and synthesise the factors contributing to doping and doping behaviours, attitudes, and beliefs and the extent to which this knowledge extends beyond the athlete to consider broader sports systems. The review followed PRISMA guidelines with risk of bias and study quality assessed by the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool, and identified contributory factors synthesised and mapped onto a systems thinking-based framework. Overall, the included studies were determined to be of high quality. Support personnel, the coach, and the coach-athlete relationship represent key influences on the athletes' decisions to dope. From the evidence presented, doping is an emergent property of sport systems and represents a complex systemic problem that will require whole-of-system interventions. The implications for this and the focus of future research are discussed.

Is health literacy of adolescent athletes' parents whose children belonged to sports clubs related to their children's intention to receive medications, vaccines, supplements, and energy drinks? A cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Adolescent athletes' values ​regarding health behaviors, including their attitudes toward doping, are largely derived from those of their parents. Therefore, clarifying the factors that affect parents' intentions regarding their children's medicine intake and nutrition can help elucidate the process of forming values ​​of healthy behaviors in young athletes.

METHODS

Between March 8 and March 9, 2021, an online questionnaire survey was conducted via an Internet research company; data from 2,000 residents in Japan were collected. Participants were male and female residents aged 30-59 years with children in elementary or high school and belonging to sports clubs. The survey items included respondent's and child's basic information, respondent's health literacy, and level of sports in which the respondent and child were (or are) engaged. Respondents were also asked if they would like their children to receive prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, herbal medicines, vaccines, supplements, or energy drinks. Logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze the relationship between respondents' basic information and health literacy and their intention to receive prescription and over-the-counter drugs, herbal medicines, vaccines, supplements, and energy drinks.

RESULTS

Higher parental health literacy was associated with higher children's willingness to receive prescription drugs (odds ratio [OR] = 1.025, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.016-1.035), over-the-counter drugs (OR = 1.012, 95% CI: 1.003-1.021), prescription herbal medicines (OR = 1.021, 95% CI: 1.021-1.030), over-the-counter herbal medicines (OR = 1.012, 95% CI: 1.003-1.021), and vaccines (OR = 1.025, 95% CI: 1.016-1.035). Conversely, the children's intention to receive energy drinks (OR = 0.990, 95% CI: 0.980-1.000) decreased significantly. As the child's athletic level increased, parents' willingness for their children to receive oral prescription medicines decreased (OR = 0.886, 95% CI: 0.791-0.992) and that to receive supplements (OR = 1.492, 95% CI: 1.330-1.673) and energy drinks significantly increased (OR = 1.480, 95% CI: 1.307-1.676).

CONCLUSION

Health literacy of adolescent athletes' parents is associated with their children's willingness to receive medicines. Healthcare providers should counsel parents of adolescent athletes to allow their children to receive necessary drug treatments and prevent doping violations caused by supplement intake.

In silico and in vitro human metabolism of IOX2, a performance-enhancing doping agent

IOX2 is a potent inhibitor of prolyl hydroxylase 2, a key enzyme in the regulation of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) and oxygen homeostasis. As such, it can be used to enhance athletic performance and is currently banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Detection of metabolites is critical to demonstrate drug use in doping. However, there is currently little data on IOX2 human metabolism. Our aim was to identify relevant biomarkers of IOX2 use in humans. For this purpose, IOX2 was incubated with 10-donor-pooled human hepatocytes for 3 h, incubates were analyzed by liquid chromatography-high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS/MS), and LC-HRMS/MS data were screened with Compound Discoverer (Thermo Scientific) for a comprehensive identification of IOX2 metabolites. Additionally, IOX2 human metabolites were predicted with GLORYx open-access software (University of Hamburg, Germany) to assist in the LC-HRMS/MS analysis and data mining. Thirteen metabolites were identified, oxidation at the quinolinyl group, O-glucuronidation, and combinations being predominant biotransformations. The results were consistent with previous animal studies and a single case of oral microdose administration. We suggest hydroxyquinolinyl-IOX2 as major biomarker of IOX2 use in biological samples, glucuronide hydrolysis being critical to increase IOX2 and hydroxyquinolinyl-IOX2 detectability in urine.

Exploitation of green synthesized chromium doped zinc oxide nanorods (NRs) mediated by flower extract of Rhododendron arboreum for highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of cationic dyes Malachite green (MG) and Fuchsin basic (FB)

In this work, green method to synthesize chromium-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods (NRs) using an aqueous flower extract from Rhododendron arboretum is explored. Herein, chromium-doped ZnO NRs were prepared with different amount of chromium doping, varied as 2-10%. The green synthesized products underwent substantial analysis through X-ray diffraction (XRD), spectroscopic such as ultraviolet spectroscopy(UV-Vis) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) methods. All samples were found to have hexagonal wurtzite ZnO, with average particle sizes of 52.41, 56.6, 54.44, 53.05, and 56.99 nm, respectively, for 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10% chromium doping in ZnO NRs. The Cr-doped ZnO NRs exhibited remarkable photocatalytic degradation activity of cationic dyes under UV-light, i.e., Malachite Green and Fuchsin Basic with degradation of 99.604 and 99.881%, respectively in 90 min. The reusability tests for these green synthesized Cr-doped ZnO NRs have also been carried out, showed 9-11 cycles with 85% of degradation efficiency. In addition, the Cr-doped ZnO NRs exhibited high selectivity for cationic dyes when experiments against mixture of dyes were performed. Photodegradation kinetics followed the pseudo-first-order model. The flower-extract-stabilized chromium-doped ZnO NRs demonstrated high photocatalytic activity toward malachite green and fuchsin basic dyes, potential material for pollution remediation.

Unraveling the effect of Cu doping on the structural and morphological properties and photocatalytic activity of ZrO2

Pristine ZrO2 and doped with different concentrations of Copper (0-7 %) were synthesized using a sol-gel combustion route. Several advanced techniques like XRD, EDX, TEM, XPS, P.L., and UV-vis spectrophotometer have characterized the compositions. The XRD proved that all peaks matched with a tetragonal phase of ZrO2 without any impurities of other phases. An average crystallite size rises from 20 to 55 nm by increasing the concentrations of Copper. The elemental analysis was examined by EDX and confirmed the presence of Cooper, Zirconium, and Oxygen. The red shift was observed due to a decrease in the bandgap (5.5-4.01 eV) with increasing the Cu concentrations. From the analysis of photocatalysis of pure ZrO2 and different concentrations of Cu-doped ZrO2 for M.B., RHB, and mix of them. The increase in doping of Cu led to enhancing the performance of the removing MB from 35 to 80 %, however, the RHB degradation was from 42 to 81 % while the mix of M.B. and RHB reached 85 % with 7 % Cu-doping ZrO2.

Effect of O-doping on electronic and optical properties of monolayer MoSe2 under shear deformation

CONTEXT

In this study, the electronic structures and optical properties of the pure MoSe2 and O-doped MoSe2 systems under different shear deformations are calculated based on the first-principles approach. It is hoped to provide new possibilities for the design of novel controllable optoelectronic devices and to provide guidance for the application of MoSe2 in the field of optoelectronic devices. The findings indicate that both pure MoSe2 and O-doped MoSe2 systems are somewhat impacted by shear deformation. The pure MoSe2 undergoes a transition from direct to indirect and then to direct bandgap under shear deformation, but still maintains the semiconductor properties. The bandgap of the doped system changes from a direct to an indirect bandgap at 8% shear deformation. According to the examination of the density of states, we find that the density of states of the pure MoSe2 system is mainly contributed by the Mo-d and Se-p orbitals, and the total density of states of the system after O-atom doping mainly originates from the results of the contributions of the Mo-d, Se-p, and O-p orbitals. Optical property analysis reveals that the conductivity and peak value of the pure MoSe2 system are gradually red-shifted toward the low-energy region with the increase of shear deformation. The dielectric function of the O-doped MoSe2 system is red-shifted in the region of 6~10% shear deformation, and the degree of red-shift rises with deformation amount. The findings demonstrate that the electrical structure and optical characteristics of the O-doped MoSe2 system may be modulated effectively by shear deformation, providing a theoretical foundation for expanding the usage of MoSe2 materials in the field of optoelectronic devices.

METHODS

This study is founded on the CASTEP module in the Materials-Studio software within the first-principles of the density-functional theory framework. The photoelectric properties of the intrinsic and doped systems under shear deformation are calculated using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerh (PBE) of generalized function under the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). The Monkhorst-Pack special K-point sampling method is used in the calculations, and a 5 × 5 × 1 K-point grid is used for the calculations with a plane-wave truncation energy of 400 eV in the optimization of the structure of each model. After geometrical optimization, the energy convergence criterion for each atom is 1 × 10-5 eV/atom, the force convergence criterion is 0.05 eV/Å, and a vacuum layer of 20 Å in the c-direction is set.

First-principles study of the effect of doping on the optoelectronic properties of defective monolayers of MoSe2

CONTEXT

In this paper, the structural stability, electronic structure, and optical properties of monolayer MoSe2 doped with C, O, Si, S, and Te atoms, respectively, under defective conditions are investigated based on first principles. It is found that the system is more structurally stable when defecting a single Se atom as compared to defecting a single Mo or two Se atoms. The electronic structure analysis of the system reveals that intrinsic MoSe2 is a direct bandgap semiconductor. The bandgap value of the system decreases with a single Se atom defect and introduces two new impurity energy levels in the conduction band. The defective systems doped with C and Si atoms all exhibit P-type doping. The total density of states of intrinsic MoSe2 is mainly contributed by the Mo-d and Se-p orbitals, and new density of state peaks appears near the conduction band after the defects of Se atoms. The total density of states of the defective system doped by each atom is mainly contributed by Mo-d, Se-p, and the result of the p orbital contribution of each dopant atom. By analyzing the dielectric function of each system, it is found that the intrinsic MoSe2 has the lowest static permittivity and the C-doped defect system has the highest static permittivity, which reaches 21.42. The C- and Si-doped defect systems are the first to start absorbing the light, and the intrinsic MoSe2 absorbs the light later, with its absorption edge starting at 1.25 eV. In the visible range, the reflection peaks of the systems move toward the high-energy region and the blue-shift phenomenon occurs. It is hoped that applying modification means to modulate the physical properties of the two-dimensional materials will provide some theoretical basis for broadening the application of monolayer MoSe2 in the field of optoelectronic devices.

METHODS

This study utilizes the first principle computational software package MS8.0 (Materials studio8.0) under density functional theory (DFT). The exchange-correlation potential (GGA-PBE) is described by the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof correlation function in CASTEP, and the potential function adopts the ultrasoft pseudopotential in the inverse space formulation. The plane wave truncation energy Ecut is set to 400 eV, the K-point is taken as 5 × 5 × 1, and the force convergence criterion is 0.05 eV/Å. The convergence accuracy of the total energy of the system is less than 1.0 × 10-5 eV/atom, the tolerance shift is less than 0.002 Å, and the stress deviation is less than 0.1 GPa. The vacuum layer is taken as 15 Å, which is intended to minimize the interlayer force. The vacuum layer was set to 15 Å to avoid the effect of layer-to-layer interaction forces in the crystal cell.

Testing for 2,4-dinitrophenol in human hair by LC-MS/MS and interpretation issues

2,4-dinitrophenol, initially developed for industrial purposes, is used in the synthesis of dyes and various drugs, including herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. Incidentally, it was discovered that 2,4-dinitrophenol increases human basal metabolic rate. As a consequence, people who want to loose weight can abuse 2,4-dinitrophenol. It is a compound of choice for bodybuilders who abuse it in combination with anabolic steroids and clenbuterol. Numerous deaths have been attributed to 2,4-dinitrophenol. Up to now, 2,4-dinitrophenol was never reported in hair. The authors present an original method to test for 2,4-dinitrophenol in hair after methanolic extraction using LC-MS/MS. The limit of detection of the procedure is 0.01 ng/mg and the method was fully validated in the range 0.1-50 ng/mg. 2,4-dinitrophenol tested positive in the brown hair of a subject deceased from acute poisoning at 5.15, 13.06 and 25.48 ng/mg in the 3 × 3 cm segments. As excessive sweating is associated to 2,4-dinitrophenol abuse, major contribution of this matrix must be taken into consideration when interpreting the data. In this case, there was a regular increase of 2,4-dinitrophenol concentration from root to tip. This specific pattern can be the consequence of sweat contamination, i.e., the older hair being for a longer time in contact with sweat.

Across the spectrum of legality: The market activities of influencers specialized in steroids and other performance and image enhancing drugs

BACKGROUND

Like many other goods and services, performance and image enhancing drugs (PIEDs), and particularly androgenic anabolic steroids (AAS), are increasingly discussed and promoted by social media influencers. Little, however, is known about the influencers specialized in PIEDs and which drugs and services they promote and sell.

AIMS

Against this background, the study has been intended to identify prominent influencers specialized in PIEDs, examine the market activities they engage in, and assess the latter's legality.

METHODS

We first searched the clean internet to identify prominent PIED influencers. Second, we conducted a six-month-long, non-reactive digital ethnography of the social media accounts of 20 influencers and, via a content analysis, identified the market activities they engage in. Third, we assessed the latter's legality, primarily using the EU legislation as a benchmark.

FINDINGS

The selected influencers are all current or former bodybuilders, predominantly male and from the United States. Many of them have developed a considerable number of followers, in three cases exceeding one million. They engage in various market activities that span the whole spectrum of legality, from legal to illegal, with many activities having an uncertain, but often dubious, legal status.

CONCLUSIONS

Though they may promote harm reduction for some users, PIED influencers also promote the public acceptance of PIED use beyond the bodybuilding community and enhance access to PIEDs for millions of people. Multifaceted policy interventions are required, aiming at preventing influencers from becoming a major source of information on, and route of access to, PIEDs.

Duple charge separation and plasmonically enriched DSSC and piezo-photocatalytic efficacy of Au anchored perovskite Gd3+:BiFeO3 nanospheres

Enhancing the solar-physical conversion efficacy ability of the nanomaterials is an essential for real-time implementation. We report the enhanced solar-physical efficiency of the BiFeO3 nanospheres via Gd3+ doping and Au nanoparticles decoration. Initially, we have obtained the Bi1-xGdxFeO3 nanospheres were attained via a simple solvothermal technique and then citrate reduction of Au was conducted. Obtained perovskite BiFeO systems were studied for the Gd3+ doping, crystalline phase and elemental purity using the XRD and XPS techniques. Transmission electron microscope had revealed the ∼400 nm sized BiFeO3 nanospheres. Optical absorption spectrum revealed the enhanced visible photon absorption occurring in BiFeO3 for both Gd3+ doping and Au decoration. The bandgap values of pristine, 1%, 3% and 5% Gd3+ doped in BiFeO3 are 2.2 eV, 2.19 eV, 2.17 eV and 2.12 eV, respectively. Conducted photoluminescence revealed the dual electron trapping occurring in BiFeO3 via Gd3+ ions and Au nanoparticles. LED light assisted 72% of piezo-photocatalytic degradation efficiency of Tetracycline is achieved with Bi0 95Fe0 05O3/Au, whereas the photo catalytic is only 65% and piezo catalytic efficiency is 58%. In recyclable studies the Bi0.95Gd0.05FeO3/Au had shown the consistent piezo-photocatalytic efficiency for 3 reaction cycles. Further, fabricated DSSC studies revealed that near 30 % enhanced solar photovoltaic efficiency for Bi0 95Fe0 05O3/Au (η = 6.5%) solar cells on par to the pristine BiFeO3 (η = 5.02%).

Estimating the in vitro cytotoxicity of the newly emerged zinc oxide (ZnO) doped chromium nanoparticles using the human fetal lung fibroblast cells (WI38 cells)

Advances in nanotechnology have been increased for more smart applications and getting the highest level of benefits, recently modification of the surface characters of nanoparticles is a new trend to get the optimal benefits, one of these modification is doping of zinc oxide with chromium nanoparticles (ZnO doped Cr NPs), the present study aimed to identify the surface characters of doped ZnO and their possible cytotoxic effects. The doped NPs were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), and Electromagnetic Data Exchange (EDX). Human fetal lung fibroblast cells (WI38 Cells) was treated with variable concentrations of pure ZnO and ZnO doped Cr (0.01 %, 0.02 %, 0.03 % and 0.04 %) for 24 hr at 37 °C followed by the MTT assay. The cells treated with the obtained half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50). The supernatant and cells were collected for oxidant/anti-oxidant and molecular analysis.The observed FESEM features are in line with the reported XRD analysis confirming the hexagonal crystal symmetry of all samples. The findings revealed that pure ZnO exhibited potent cytotoxic effects followed by (0.03 % and 0.04 %). All tested NPs produce lipid peroxidation significantly (0.03 % and 0.04 %). The significant up regulation of Bcl-2-associated X protein (BAX) and apoptotic Caspase (Cas-3) transcription level were reported in ZnO and 0.03 % and 0.04 % in contrast the anti apoptitic B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) is elevated in 0.01 % and 0.02 %. Doping of ZnO with Cr causing significant morphological changes which effect on their toxicity especially with 0.03 % and 0.04 %.

Comparative catalytic reduction and degradation with biodegradable sodium alginate based nanocomposite: Zinc oxide/N-doped carbon nitride/sodium alginate

Sodium alginate (SA) is a biodegradable macromolecule which is used to synthesize nanocomposites and their further use as catalysis. Zinc oxide (ZnO) and nitrogen doped carbon nitride (ND-C3N4) nanoparticles are prepared using solvothermal and hydrothermal methods, respectively. ZnO/ND-C3N4/SA nanocomposites are successfully synthesized by employing in-situ polymerization. The presence of essential functional groups is confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic analysis. Controlled spherical morphology for ZnO nanoparticles, with an average diameter of ∼52 nm, is shown by Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis, while rice-like grain structure with an average grain size ∼62 nm is exhibited by ND-C3N4 nanoparticles. The presence of required elements is confirmed by Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopic (EDX) analysis. The crystalline nature of nanocomposites is verified by X-ray diffraction spectroscopic (XRD) analysis. The investigation of the catalytic efficiency for degradation and reduction of various organic dyes is carried out on nanoparticles and nanocomposites. Thorough examination and comparison of parameters, such as apparent rate constant (kapp), reduction time, percentage reduction, reduced concentration and half-life, are conducted for all substrates. The nanocomposites show greater efficiency than nanoparticles in both reactions: catalytic reduction and catalytic degradation.

Enhanced photo-Fenton-like performance of biotemplated manganese-doped cobalt silicate catalysts

Cobalt-based catalysts are one of the preferred materials for effective activation of hydrogen peroxide, and metal element doping and active site dispersion are effective methods to enhance their catalytic activity. In this work, manganese-doped cobalt silicate@diatomite composites with enhanced photo-Fenton-like oxidation performance were prepared and used for degradation of methyl orange (MO) dyes. Experiments showed that manganese doping increased the specific surface area of the samples and decreased the band gap energy of the materials. Moreover, the samples doped with manganese elements had better photo-Fenton-like properties. The degradation of methyl orange by Co0.25MnSi@DE/H2O2-UV reached more than 95%. In addition, density-functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that the Mn-doped samples were more prone to activate H2O2 than non-manganese-doped samples, and the synergistic effect from using a bimetallic catalyst increased the photo-Fenton oxidation activity in the system. ESR spectroscopy and bursting tests indicated that the possible degradation mechanism consisted of hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals generated by the synergistic effect of cobalt ions and manganese under UV radiation. This study thus presents a feasible idea for the preparation of cobalt-based photo-Fenton catalysts that also provides a basis for understanding the catalytic mechanism analysis of other types of bimetallic catalysts.

Iodonium Initiators: Paving the Air-free Oxidation of Spiro-OMeTAD for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

To date, perovskite solar cells (pero-SCs) with doped 2,2',7,7'-tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9,9'-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMeTAD) hole transporting layers (HTLs) have shown the highest recorded power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). However, their commercialization is still impeded by poor device stability owing to the hygroscopic lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide and volatile 4-tert-butylpyridine dopants as well as time-consuming oxidation in air. In this study, we explored a series of single-component iodonium initiators with strong oxidability and different electron delocalization properties to precisely manipulate the oxidation states of Spiro-OMeTAD without air assistance, and the oxidation mechanism was clearly understood. Iodine (III) in the diphenyliodonium cation (IP+ ) can accept a single electron from Spiro-OMeTAD and forms Spiro-OMeTAD⋅+ owing to its strong oxidability. Moreover, because of the coordination of the strongly delocalized TFSI- with Spiro-OMeTAD⋅+ in a stable radical complex, the resulting hole mobility was 30 times higher than that of pristine Spiro-OMeTAD. In addition, the IP-TFSI initiator facilitated the growth of a homogeneous and pinhole-free Spiro-OMeTAD film. The pero-SCs based on this oxidizing HTL showed excellent efficiencies of 25.16 % (certified: 24.85 % for 0.062-cm2 ) and 20.71 % for a 15.03-cm2 module as well as remarkable overall stability.

Effect of doping and defects on the optoelectronic properties of ZrSe2 based on the first principle

CONTEXT

Based on the first principles under the framework of density functional theory, it calculates the effect of vacancy defects in single Zr and single Se atoms and the replacement of Se atoms in ZrSe2 with O, Se, and Te atoms on the optoelectronic properties of monolayer ZrSe2, including geometry, energy band structure, electronic density of states, and optical properties. The doping of the three non-metallic atoms was n-type doping for the O and S atoms and p-type doping for the Te atom. Defects in the Zr atoms and O-atom doping significantly affect the peak reflectance and absorption coefficient of the ZrSe2 system.

METHODS

All Density Functional Theory calculations were carried out using the CASTEP module in the Materials-Studio (MS) software. The generalized gradient approximation plane-wave pseudopotential method and the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerfhof (PBE) generalized function were used for structural optimization and total energy calculation of the defect and doping systems. After convergence tests, the plane wave truncation energy was set to 500 eV, and the Brillouin zone K-point grid was set to 4 × 4 × 1. The atomic energy convergence criterion is 1.0 × 10-6 eV/atom, the interatomic interaction force convergence criterion is 0.02 eV/Å, the maximum atomic displacement convergence criterion is 0.001 Å, and the internal crystal stress convergence criterion is 0.05 GPa. In order to avoid the influence of the interaction forces between the layers, a vacuum layer of 15 Å is placed in the Z-axis direction.

Novel barium-doped-baghdadite incorporated PHBV-PCL composite fibrous scaffolds for bone tissue engineering

Bioceramic/polymer composites have dragged a lot of attention for treating hard tissue damage in recent years. In this study, we synthesized barium-doped baghdadite (Ba-BAG), as a novel bioceramic, and later developed fibrous composite poly (hydroxybutyrate) co (hydroxyvalerate)- polycaprolactone (PHBV-PCL) scaffolds containing different amounts of baghdadite (BAG) and Ba-BAG, intended to be used in bone regeneration. Our results demonstrated that BAG and Ba-doped BAG powders were synthesized successfully using the sol-gel method and their microstructural, physicochemical, and cytotoxical properties results were evaluated. In the following, PHBV/PCL composite scaffolds containing different amounts of BAG and Ba-BAG (1, 3, and 5 wt%) were produced by the wet electrospinning method. The porosity of scaffolds decreased from 78% to 72% in Ba-BAG-incorporated PHBV/PCL scaffolds. The compressive strength of the scaffolds was between 4.69 and 9.28 kPa, which was increased to their maximum values in the scaffolds with Ba-BAG. The presence of BAG and Ba-BAG in the polymer scaffolds resulted in increasing bioactivity, and it was introduced as a suitable way to control the degradation rate of scaffolds. The presence of the BAG component was a major reason for higher cell proliferation in reinforced PHBV/PCL polymeric scaffolds, while Ba existence played its influential role in the higher osteogenic activity of cells on Ba-BAG incorporated PHBV/PCL scaffolds. Thus, the incorporation of Ba-BAG bioceramic materials into the structure of polymeric PHBV/PCL scaffolds promoted their various properties, and allow these scaffolds to be used as promising candidates in bone tissue engineering applications.
