Identity Fusion and Aggressive Behavior Among Chinese Freshmen: The Chain Mediating Role of Depressive Mood and Sleep Quality

Aggressive behavior is considered one of the indicators of maladjustment and increases during the transition to college. Previous studies have demonstrated that having identity fusion with particular social groups significantly predicts college adjustment among freshmen. However, the relationship between identity fusion and aggressive behavior in college freshmen has rarely been studied. Thus, guided by the frustration-aggression theory, this study aimed to explore the association between identity fusion with class and aggressive behavior among Chinese college freshmen and examine the potential mediating roles of depressive mood and sleep quality. A cross-sectional survey study was carried out among 1,037 Chinese college freshmen (Mage = 19.56, SD = 1.068, 29.12% males). Class identity fusion, depressive mood, sleep quality, and aggressive behavior were measured via four self-reported questionnaires. Structural equation modeling was used to test the mediation model. Analyses showed that identity fusion was negatively related to depressive mood and aggressive behavior and positively correlated with sleep quality. The results also revealed that the direct effect of identity fusion on aggressive behavior was significant, and identity fusion can indirectly affect aggressive behavior not only through the mediation effect of depressive mood but also through the chain mediation effect of depressive mood and sleep quality. Moreover, the mediating effect of depressive mood varied by gender. These findings suggest that strategies that help freshmen promote identity fusion and those that alleviate depressive mood and sleep problem may help reduce aggressive behavior.

Association between Depressive Mood, Antidepressant Therapy and Neuropsychological Performances: Results from a Cross-Sectional Study on Elderly Patients

BACKGROUND

Currently, the global demographic landscape is undergoing a transformative shift towards an increasingly aging population. This leads to an increase in chronic pathologies, including depression and cognitive impairment. This study aimed to evaluate the association between depressive mood, whether in treatment or not, and cognitive capacities, assessed using the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS).

METHODS

This study included 259 subjects, aged 65 years or older, evaluated at the Geriatric Outpatient Service of the University Hospital of Monserrato, Cagliari, between July 2018 and May 2022, who experienced subjective depressive mood and/or cognitive deficits.

RESULTS

Only 25.1% of the sample showed no cognitive impairment on the RBANS. Education was a significant regressor of the RBANS Total Scale scores (p < 0.0001) and was negatively associated with mood deflection (r = -0.15, p = 0.0161). Subjects with depressive mood had more impaired attention and visuospatial/constructional abilities compared to untreated euthymic patients. Post-hoc analysis, conducted with the Conover test, showed that untreated euthymic patients (GDS-15 ≤ 5, group 2) had a higher score on the RBANS total scale than patients with mood deflection (GDS-15 > 5, group 1), and treated euthymic patients (GDS-15 ≤ 5, group 3). Finally, different logistic regression analyses revealed a significant negative coefficient for GDS as a regressor of the RBANS total scale (coefficient: -0.04, p = 0.0089), visuospatial/constructional abilities (coefficient: -0.03, p = 0.0009), language (coefficient: -0.05, p = 0.0140), and attention (coefficient: -0.05, p < 0.0001).

CONCLUSIONS

Our analysis demonstrated that "naturally" euthymic people show better cognitive performances than people with depressive mood and subjects with acceptable mood due to antidepressants. Furthermore, the gender-based difference observed in the language domain suggests the potential utility of incorporating an alternative category for male patients in the Semantic Fluency test.

The Potential of Chatbots for Emotional Support and Promoting Mental Well-Being in Different Cultures: Mixed Methods Study

BACKGROUND

Artificial intelligence chatbot research has focused on technical advances in natural language processing and validating the effectiveness of human-machine conversations in specific settings. However, real-world chat data remain proprietary and unexplored despite their growing popularity, and new analyses of chatbot uses and their effects on mitigating negative moods are urgently needed.

OBJECTIVE

In this study, we investigated whether and how artificial intelligence chatbots facilitate the expression of user emotions, specifically sadness and depression. We also examined cultural differences in the expression of depressive moods among users in Western and Eastern countries.

METHODS

This study used SimSimi, a global open-domain social chatbot, to analyze 152,783 conversation utterances containing the terms "depress" and "sad" in 3 Western countries (Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States) and 5 Eastern countries (Indonesia, India, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand). Study 1 reports new findings on the cultural differences in how people talk about depression and sadness to chatbots based on Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count and n-gram analyses. In study 2, we classified chat conversations into predefined topics using semisupervised classification techniques to better understand the types of depressive moods prevalent in chats. We then identified the distinguishing features of chat-based depressive discourse data and the disparity between Eastern and Western users.

RESULTS

Our data revealed intriguing cultural differences. Chatbot users in Eastern countries indicated stronger emotions about depression than users in Western countries (positive: P<.001; negative: P=.01); for example, Eastern users used more words associated with sadness (P=.01). However, Western users were more likely to share vulnerable topics such as mental health (P<.001), and this group also had a greater tendency to discuss sensitive topics such as swear words (P<.001) and death (P<.001). In addition, when talking to chatbots, people expressed their depressive moods differently than on other platforms. Users were more open to expressing emotional vulnerability related to depressive or sad moods to chatbots (74,045/148,590, 49.83%) than on social media (149/1978, 7.53%). Chatbot conversations tended not to broach topics that require social support from others, such as seeking advice on daily life difficulties, unlike on social media. However, chatbot users acted in anticipation of conversational agents that exhibit active listening skills and foster a safe space where they can openly share emotional states such as sadness or depression.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings highlight the potential of chatbot-assisted mental health support, emphasizing the importance of continued technical and policy-wise efforts to improve chatbot interactions for those in need of emotional assistance. Our data indicate the possibility of chatbots providing helpful information about depressive moods, especially for users who have difficulty communicating emotions to other humans.

Preschoolers' emotion reactivity and regulation: Links with maternal psychological distress and child behavior problems

Maladaptive offspring emotion regulation has been identified as one pathway linking maternal and child psychological well-being in school-aged children. Whether such a pathway is present earlier in life still remains unclear. The present study investigated the role of preschoolers' emotion reactivity and regulation in the association between maternal psychological distress and child internalizing and externalizing problems. Children's emotion reactivity and regulation were assessed through both observed behavior and physiology. At 42 months of age, children (n = 251; 128 girls) completed a fear induction task during which their heart-rate variability was assessed and their behavior was monitored, and maternal self-reports on depressive mood and anxiety were collected. At 48 months mothers and fathers reported on their children's internalizing and externalizing problems. Higher maternal depressive mood was associated with lower child fear-related reactivity and regulation, as indexed by heart-rate variability. The latter mediated the association between higher maternal depressive mood and higher preschoolers' externalizing problems. Overall, our findings support the role of preschoolers' emotion reactivity and regulation in the relationship between maternal psychological distress and children's socio-emotional difficulties. This role may also depend on the discrete emotion to which children react or seek to regulate as, here, we only assessed fear-related reactivity and regulation.

Effectiveness of Enhanced Self-Positivity Bias Training in Mitigating Depressive Mood following Negative Life Events

The phenomenon of self-positivity bias refers to the common tendency for individuals to perceive themselves in a more positive light than is objectively warranted. The current study seeks to investigate the impact of enhanced self-positivity bias on depressive mood resulting from negative life events. The study included two experiments, a resistance experiment (exp. 1) and an improvement experiment (exp. 2), with 40 randomly selected college students randomly assigned to either a self-positive bias training group or a neutral training group in each experiment. In the resistance experiment, self-positive bias training was conducted before failure feedback, while in the improvement experiment, it was conducted after failure feedback. The results showed that failure feedback significantly increased depression levels among college students, and self-positive bias training improved the level of self-positive bias. In the resistance experiment, there was no significant difference between the self-positive bias training group and the neutral training group regarding depression. However, in the improvement experiment, being in the self-positive bias training group had a significantly greater effect on improving depression compared to the neutral training group. Overall, the findings suggest that while self-positive bias training cannot prevent depression caused by failure events, it has a positive effect on improving depression.

Domains of the Kihon Checklist associated with prefrailty among community-dwelling older adults

Background

Various functions have been reported to be involved in prefrailty. However, no reports examining more relevant functions have been identified. Therefore, the purpose was to examine the characteristics of Kihon Checklist (KCL) associated with prefrailty by comparing it with robustness, using the KCL to comprehensively assessing life-related functions in community-dwelling older adults.

Methods

The 194 (mean age: 75 ± 6 years) participants were community-dwelling older adults. Using the Japanese cardiovascular health study criteria, participants' robustness and prefrailty were assessed. Comprehensive functions related to life were also assessed by KCL and even each physical function was measured.

Results

The main KCL associated with robustness and prefrailty were physical function (OR: 1.83 (1.17-2.88)), nutritional status (OR: 8.16 (2.96-22.48)), and depressed mood (OR: 3.46 (1.76-6.79)). Particularly, older adults had difficulty in mobility, e.g., climbing stairs and getting up from a chair, suggesting a strong fear of falling. Psychological characteristics, e.g., low life fulfillment, low sense of self-usefulness, and a strong sense of boredom, were also observed.

Conclusions

Prefrailty individuals were characterized by poor physical function and nutritional status and a depressive mood. In particular, prefrailty may be prevented or improved by approaches to physical function and fear of falling, in addition to psychological interventions that encourage activity and a sense of self-usefulness.

On-call work and depressive mood: A cross-sectional survey among rural migrant workers in China

Introduction

With the rapid development of China's "gig economy," the on-call work model has grown increasingly prevalent in China and has attracted a large number of rural migrant workers with its low employment threshold. However, this irregular employment mode may negatively impact the mental health of workers.

Methods

This paper uses an ordinal logistic regression model to study the relationship between Chinese rural migrant workers' on-call work and their depression.

Results

The results showed that after controlling for relevant variables, the odds ratio of depressive mood among rural migrant workers engaged in on-call work was 1.22 (95% CI 1.04-1.43) compared with rural migrant workers who did not need to be on call. In further heterogeneity research, we found that on-call work is more likely to aggravate the depression risk of rural migrant workers who are highly dependent on the internet and have low-wage incomes.

Discussion

This research suggests that appropriate measures should be taken to mitigate the negative impact of on-call work on the mental health of rural migrant workers, and more attention needs to be paid to the mental health of lower salaried and gig workers. This paper provides a valuable sample of Chinese rural migrant workers for theoretical research on the relationship between on-call work and mental health and confirms the relationship between the two. These results contribute new ideas to the theory and practice of psychological crisis intervention aimed at Chinese rural migrant workers.

Prevalence, severity, and self-management of depressive mood among community-dwelling people with spinal cord injury in Nepal

Background

Depression is a common psychological condition after spinal cord injury. There are increased incidences of self-harm, suicidal behavior, and lower quality of life among people with spinal cord injury and depression. However, self-management of depressive symptoms in the community is less explored.

Objective

This study aimed to examine the prevalence, severity, and self-management of depressive mood in community-dwelling people with spinal cord injury.

Methods

A descriptive study was conducted in 2019 among 115 people with spinal cord injury discharged from three health centers and living in the 13 districts of Bagmati Province. Participants were selected using stratified random sampling. Questionnaires were related to demographics, health and environment, depressive mood, and self-management. Descriptive statistics and quantitative content analysis were used to analyze the data.

Results

Ninety-seven (84.3%) people with spinal cord injury had a depressive mood. Of these, 60.8% had moderate to severe depressive moods. They mainly used the internet and social media, shared feelings with family members, and practiced Hindu religious activities for depressive mood management because of the physical barriers to accessing a healthcare facility and easiness to use of non-pharmacological methods. Nearly half of participants who used sharing of feelings felt their depressive mood disappeared when they often used the method.

Conclusion

Depressive mood following initial hospitalization is highly prevalent among people with spinal cord injury in Nepal, most of whom live in rural settings. Therefore, nurses and other health professionals should provide psychoeducation for this population and their family members to better address mental health problems. Facilitating pathways for those in rural areas to engage in social activities and timely treatment access may improve depressive mood. Nurses and other rehabilitation professionals can use social media to assess depressive moods and deliver management approaches in the community.

Perceiving Positive Facial Expression Can Relieve Depressive Moods: The Effect of Emotional Contagion on Mood in People With Subthreshold Depression

Emotional contagion is a phenomenon by which an individual's emotions directly trigger similar emotions in others. We explored the possibility that perceiving others' emotional facial expressions affect mood in people with subthreshold depression (sD). Around 49 participants were divided into the following four groups: participants with no depression (ND) presented with happy faces; ND participants presented with sad faces; sD participants presented with happy faces; and sD participants presented with sad faces. Participants were asked to answer an inventory about their emotional states before and after viewing the emotional faces to investigate the influence of emotional contagion on their mood. Regardless of depressive tendency, the groups presented with happy faces exhibited a slight increase in the happy mood score and a decrease in the sad mood score. The groups presented with sad faces exhibited an increased sad mood score and a decreased happy mood score. These results demonstrate that emotional contagion affects the mood in people with sD, as well as in individuals with ND. These results indicate that emotional contagion could relieve depressive moods in people with sD. It demonstrates the importance of the emotional facial expressions of those around people with sD such as family and friends from the viewpoint of emotional contagion.

Early identification of depressive symptoms in school-aged children: Psychometric properties and validation of a new short version of Short Mood & Feelings Questionnaire

BACKGROUND

Depressive mood is a common problem among children in Western countries. Professionals in school and other health services have an important role in identifying children at increased risk for depression. The Short Mood and Feelings Questionnaire (SMFQ) is a widely used screening tool, but its 13 items still make it quite time-consuming to complete. There is an urgent need for a quick and easy-to-complete self-report depressive mood scale for use in school health examinations.

AIM

This paper aims to describe and validate a revised version of SMFQ: FsMFQ-6 is intended as a short screening tool for the early identification of depressive symptoms in children.

METHODS

Nationally representative data (n = 95,725) were drawn from the 2017 School Health Promotion Study. The respondents were fourth- and fifth-grade pupils (aged 10-12) in Finnish primary schools. The data were analysed separately by gender. The construct validity of the scale was studied by principal component analysis and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), convergent validity by both receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis and Spearman's correlation coefficient. Reliability was tested by Cronbach's alpha coefficient.

RESULTS

Principal component analysis yielded a one-component model: the Finnish Short Mood and Feelings Questionnaire 6 (FsMFQ-6). CFA confirmed the validity of FsMFQ-6. Compared with mood at home (AUC = 0.80) and mood at school (AUC = 0.85), overall sensitivity and specificity were optimal at cut-off point 0. Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.73, indicating good internal consistency. The results for girls and boys were almost identical.

CONCLUSION

The results confirmed the validity and reliability of FsMFQ-6. FsMFQ-6 recognises depressive mood in children and is suitable for screening depressive symptoms in fourth- and fifth-grade pupils in Finland. However, it is important to pay close attention to children who choose the 'Sometimes' response option more than once, for that can be a sign of depressive symptoms.

The Association of Body Image Self-Discrepancy With Female Gender, Calorie-Restricted Diet, and Psychological Symptoms Among Healthy Junior High School Students in Japan

Background: Body image self-discrepancy reflects a preference for weight loss regardless of normal body size and is a distorted cognition that may be a precursor to eating disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate factors associated with body image self-discrepancy among healthy junior high school students in Japan.

Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted at one junior high school in Saitama, Japan, in December 2016. After excluding obese participants (defined as 20% above their ideal weight), 304 students (mean age, 13.9years; n=181 girls, 59.5%) who fell into underweight (n=22, 7.2%) and normal weight categories were selected. Body image self-discrepancy was measured using the Contour Drawing Rating Scale which includes eight separate figures representing body sizes. We then calculated the difference by subtracting ideal from current body sizes and defined body image self-discrepancy if the difference >1.

Results: Girls constituted 92% (n=49) of the 53 students with body image self-discrepancy. In all students, multivariable stepwise models demonstrated that female gender (OR, 6.92, 95% CI: 2.33–20.51), a calorie-restricted diet (OR, 5.18, 95% CI: 2.22–12.05), and psychological symptoms (OR, 1.47, 95% CI: 1.15–1.87) were significantly associated with an increased risk of body image self-discrepancy. Specifically for girls, an increased risk of body image self-discrepancy was associated with calorie-restricted suppers and psychological symptoms.

Conclusion: Body image self-discrepancy among healthy adolescents in Japan was found to be closely linked to being a girl, having a calorie-restricted diet, and having psychological symptoms.

Association between sources of stress and depressive mood in Korean adults

OBJECTIVE

The present study investigated the association between different sources of stress and depressive mood in Korean adults.

METHODS

A total of 4464 adults who completed the 2018 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were included in the analysis. Data included sources of stress, depressive mood assessed by the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire, sociodemographic characteristics, and health-related habits. Multiple logistic regression models were applied to calculate the odds ratio for depressive mood according to each source of stress and stratified by sex and age.

RESULTS

Fully adjusted models revealed that individuals who reported a financial problem or health concern as their main source of stress were more likely to experience depressive mood; when data were stratified by sex, these associations remained significant among females only. An age-stratified analysis indicated that financial problems were associated with depressive mood in middle-aged individuals and health concerns were associated with depressive mood in elderly.

CONCLUSION

Korean adults with specific sources of stress should be monitored for the development of emotional distress.

The association between injurious falls and older adults' cognitive function: the role of depressive mood and physical performance

Background

The impact of falls on cognitive function is unclear. We explored whether injurious falls are associated with cognitive decline in older adults, and evaluated the role of changes in psychological and physical health as mediators of such association.

Methods

This prospective study involved 2267 community-dwelling participants in the Swedish National study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (≥60 years). Data on injurious falls (ie, falls requiring medical attention) during each 3-year time interval of follow-up were obtained from national registers. Assessment of cognitive function (Mini-Mental State Examination), depressive mood (Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale), and physical performance (walking speed) were carried out every 3 or 6 years over a 12-year follow-up. The association between falls and cognition was estimated through linear mixed-effects models, and the mediating role of changes in depressive mood and physical performance was tested using mediation analysis.

Results

After adjusting for potential confounders, individuals who experienced injurious falls had a greater annual decline in Mini-Mental State Examination in the subsequent time interval (β = −1.49, 95% CI: −1.84; −1.13), than those who did not. The association increased with the occurrence of ≥2 falls (β = −2.13, 95% CI: −2.70; −1.56). Worsening of walking speed and depressive mood explained around 26% and 8%, respectively, of the association between falls and cognitive decline.

Conclusions

Injurious falls are associated with greater cognitive decline, and this association is partly mediated by worsening of physical performance and, in a lesser extent, of depressive mood. These findings suggest that physical deficits and low mood are potential therapeutic targets for mitigating the association between falls and cognitive decline.

Does Young Adults' Neighborhood Environment Affect Their Depressive Mood? Insights from the 2019 Korean Community Health Survey

The rates of depression among young adults have been increasing in high-income countries and have emerged as a social problem in South Koreans aged 19–34. However, the literature is unclear on whether the neighborhood environment that young adults live in affects the onset and severity of their depressive symptoms. This study analyzed data from the 2019 Korean Community Health Survey (KCHS) using the Tobit model to identify the effect of the neighborhood environment on young adults’ depressive moods. Controlling for other corresponding factors, young adults’ neighborhood environment satisfaction affected their depression, and natural environment satisfaction (32.5%), safety level satisfaction (31.0%), social overhead capital (SOC), environment satisfaction (30.2%), trust between neighbors satisfaction (20.1%), and public transportation environmental satisfaction (12.2%) affected young adults’ depressive moods. Of these, natural environment satisfaction (32.5%), safety level environment satisfaction (31.0%), and SOC environment satisfaction (30.2%) affected young adults’ depressive mood to a similar extent. This implies that many young adults in South Korea live in inadequate neighborhood conditions. This research contributes to the literature by identifying the specific environmental factors that affect young adults’ depressive moods.

Association between handgrip strength and suicidal ideation in Korean adults

BACKGROUND

It remains unclear whether muscle strength directly links with suicidal thoughts in adults. Given that suicidal ideation is tightly linked to depressive mood, this study sought to investigate the association between handgrip strength and suicidal ideation independent of depressive mood.

METHODS

We performed a cross-sectional analysis of 14,325 adults from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey. Handgrip strength was measured by squeezing the handgrip dynamometer using the dominant hand. Suicidal ideation and depressive mood were assessed via the self-reported questionnaires. Logistic regression models were applied to calculate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for suicidal ideation per 1 kg increase in handgrip strength while adjusting for potential confounders.

RESULTS

The mean age of participants was 49.8 years, 44.7% of whom were male. Suicidal ideation was associated with elderly age, female sex, low socioeconomic status, unhealthy lifestyles, and more comorbid conditions. Depressive mood was similarly associated with each of these factors. Each 1 kg increase in handgrip strength reduced the odds of suicidal ideation in both sexes independent of depressive mood [OR (95% CI), 0.96 (0.94-0.99) for male and 0.97 (0.95-1.00) for female]; in subgroup analysis this association remained robust among elderly men [OR (95% CI), 0.94 (0.91-0.98)].

LIMITATION

Causality and the impact of unmeasured confounders were not addressed.

CONCLUSION

Low handgrip strength is associated with suicidal ideation among adults. Future research is required to confirm our findings and to establish whether strength training can reduce suicidal behaviors, particularly in elderly men.

Improving emotion regulation of social exclusion in depression-prone individuals: a tDCS study targeting right VLPFC

BACKGROUND

Growing evidence has indicated that right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (RVLPFC) is critical in down-regulating emotional responses to social exclusion, and that depression is accompanied by social emotional dysregulation associated with reduced lateral prefrontal engagement. This study used anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to examine whether stimulating RVLPFC could improve emotional down-regulation of social exclusion in individuals with high depressive mood (DM).

METHODS

A total of 96 high and 94 low DM individuals received active or sham tDCS while viewing social exclusion or individual negative pictures under no-reappraisal (passive viewing) and reappraisal conditions. Participants rate their negative emotional experience following the presentation of each image. Pupil diameter and visual fixation duration were also recorded during the task.

RESULTS

It was found that tDCS-activated RVLPFC induced a stronger regulation effect on social exclusion than individual negative emotions. The effect of tDCS on regulation of social exclusion was more pronounced in low v. high DM individuals.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings demonstrate the specific role of RVLPFC on social emotion regulation, which has implications for refining target areas for the treatment of social emotion dysregulation in depression. However the findings do not suggest that high DM individuals benefit from a single-tDCS session on the emotion regulation of social exclusion. Thus we suggest to use multiple tDCS sessions or transcranial magnetic stimulation to further explore the therapeutic proposal in the future.

Effects of a Modified Tai Chi Program on Older People with Mild Dementia: A Randomized Controlled Trial

BACKGROUND

Tai Chi exercise is a non-pharmacological therapy that has received increased attention in recent years. A Tai Chi program has been specifically modified for older people with cognitive impairments by the research team.

OBJECTIVE

We aim to assess the effects of this Tai Chi program on mild dementia.

METHODS

Eighty older people with mild dementia were recruited and randomly assigned to a Tai Chi group or a control group. The Tai Chi group practiced the Tai Chi program three times a week for 10 months, while the control group continued receiving routine treatments. All participants were assessed for cognitive function, behavior/mood, and activities of daily living at baseline, 5 months, and 10 months.

RESULTS

The Tai Chi group performed better than the control group. Repeated measures ANOVA revealed a significant group×time interaction in the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Further analysis of sub-items of the MoCA showed a significant time effect in naming and abstraction. It was statistically significant in both main effect of time and group×time interaction in the Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Paired sample t test showed the Tai Chi group scored lower at 5 and 10 months in the NPI and at 10 months in the GDS compared with baseline. The Tai Chi group scored lower than the control group at 10 months in the NPI and GDS.

CONCLUSION

The results suggest this Tai Chi program may help improve cognitive function and mental well-being for older adults with mild dementia.

The Mediating Effects of Marital Intimacy and Work Satisfaction in the Relationship between Husbands' Domestic Labor and Depressive Mood of Married Working Women

The purpose of the study was to examine the relationships between the husbands' domestic labor and marital intimacy, work satisfaction, and depressive mood in married working women. We used the sixth (2016) dataset from the Women and Families Panel Survey conducted by the Korean Women's Development Institute (KWDI). The subjects were 791 married working women who lived with a wage-earner husband and who did not have a housework assistant. The correlations between variables were measured and the fit of the structural equation model was assessed. We used a mediation model in which the husbands' domestic labor affected the depressive mood of married working women through mediation of marital intimacy and work satisfaction. Bootstrapping was used to verify the significance of the indirect effects of the mediating variables. Husbands' domestic labor had a significant effect on married women's marital intimacy and work satisfaction, but no significant direct effect on depressive mood. Marital intimacy had a significant effect on work satisfaction, and these two variables were significantly related to reductions in the depressive mood score. Husbands' domestic labor was found to be a complete mediator of depressive mood through its effects on marital intimacy and work satisfaction. Husbands' domestic labor did not directly reduce married working women's depressive mood scores, but instead reduced them indirectly through effects on marital intimacy and work satisfaction.

Loneliness, Depressive Mood and Cyberbullying Victimization in Adolescent Victims of Cyber Dating Violence

Currently, cyber dating violence (CDV) is a serious health problem among adolescents due to their frequent use of communication technologies in their romantic relationships including the use of these technologies to perpetrate dating violence. However, research on this topic is recent and more studies about victims’ psychosocial adjustment are needed. The objectives of this study were to analyze the prevalence of CDV victimization according to frequency (occasional and frequent) and type (cyber control and cyber-aggression) and to explore their relations with loneliness, depressive mood and cyberbullying victimization. A total of 604 adolescents (M age = 14.32, SD = 1.67) who had a dating relationship at the time or in the past 12 months, participated in this study. The results showed a higher prevalence for cyber-control than cyber-aggression victimization, and positive correlations of CDV victimization with depressive mood and cyberbullying victimization in boys and girls. Positive correlations with loneliness were also observed for girls. The average effect size of the aforementioned correlations was large for girls and medium for boys. Both boys and girls who were frequent victims of CDV also suffered more cyberbullying by peers than those who were never, and occasionally, cyber victimized by their partners. Girls who were frequent victims of CDV also reported higher scores for loneliness and depressive mood, with a small average effect size. All these results highlight close relations between cyberbullying and CDV in adolescents, being necessary to pay greater attention to possible experiences of poly-victimization, and a worse psychosocial adjustment in frequently victimized girls than boys. These findings may be useful for developing more effective intervention programs.

Which Aspects of Dining Style are Associated with Depressive Mood? A Study at an Assisted Living Facility in Japan

Previous research indicated that dining style is associated with depressive mood in community-dwelling older adults; however, the nature of this relationship in care facilities is unclear. The association between dining style and depressive mood was examined in Japanese assisted living facility. A questionnaire survey was conducted among residents older than 65 years. Dining style was assessed by objective (the number of people with whom one eats) and subjective (feelings of enjoyment during mealtimes) factors. The odds ratio of participants who ate alone but enjoyed meals having depressive mood were not statistically different from the reference group (eating with others and enjoying). In contrast, participants who ate with others and did not enjoy meals, and participants who ate alone and did not enjoy meals were more likely to have depressive mood compared to the reference group. Although a cross-sectional study, findings suggested that caregivers should consider residents' subjective dining styles to provide optimal support at mealtimes.

The association between depressive mood and ischemic heart disease: a twin study

OBJECTIVE

Individuals with mood disorders have increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The aims of this study were to evaluate if the risk of cardiovascular disease in individuals with mood disorder could be explained by shared genetic and early environmental factors.

METHODS

We included 6714 Danish middle and old aged twins from two large population-based studies. Cox proportional hazards regression was used to perform individual-level and intra-pair analyses of the association between self-reported depression symptomatology scores and register-based diagnoses of ischemic heart disease.

RESULTS

Higher depression symptomatology scores (both total, affective, and somatic) were associated with higher incidence of ischemic heart disease after multivariable adjustment in individual-level analyses. In intra-pair analyses, this association was similar but with slightly larger confidence intervals. There was no interaction with gender and no major differences between mono- or dizygotic twins. Within twin pairs, the twin scoring highest on depressive symptoms developed ischemic heart disease more often or earlier than the lower scoring twin. A sensitivity analysis including a 2-year time lag of depression symptomatology to limit the risk of reverse causality showed similar results.

CONCLUSION

Genetic factors and early life environment do not seem to explain the association between depressive mood and ischemic heart disease.

Hypoglycaemic treatment adherence and the association with psychological, self-management and glycaemic characteristics in adults with type 1 diabetes

AIM

The purpose of this study was to examine adherence to hypoglycaemia treatment guidelines in adults with type 1 diabetes (T1DM). The American Diabetes Association recommends consumption of 15-20 g of glucose to treat hypoglycaemia. Overtreatment may result in poor glycaemic control and greater glycaemic variability. It is not fully understood how well T1DM adults comply with hypoglycaemia treatment recommendations.

DESIGN

A secondary analysis using a descriptive comparative design.

METHODS

Using real-time measures over six consecutive days, we examined (a) adherence to hypoglycaemia treatment guidelines and (b) comparisons of demographic self-management behaviour, psychological characteristics and glycaemia between adherent and non-adherent groups.

RESULTS

Findings revealed those who overtreated consumed more daily grain servings and reported higher stress and depressed mood compared with those who followed treatment recommendations. Findings suggest that hypoglycaemia treatment practices and psychological factors influencing self-management should be assessed.

Short report: depressive mood moderates the association between family communication and self-rated health in married couples

Self-rated health, a valid measure of general health, is influenced by family dynamics and depression. In this study, using data from the Family Cohort Study in Primary Care, we investigated whether depressive mood moderated the association between family communication and self-rated health in married couples. Among the 520 couples in the cohort, we cross-sectionally analyzed the responses of 420 couples (840 participants) who provided answers to the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, the Family Communication Scale of the Family Adaptation and Cohesion Evaluation Scale-IV, and a self-rated health question. Hierarchical regression analyses were performed to evaluate the interactions between depressive mood and family communication on self-rated health. High levels of family communication were associated with better self-rated health (r = -.16, p < .01), and that depressive mood moderated the association between family communication and self-rated health (β = .10, p = .008). Specifically, the association between family communication and self-rated health was significant only when levels of depressive mood were low (β = -.175, p = < .001), and the association was lost when levels of depressive mood were high (β = -.031, p = .446). High levels of depressive mood weakened the positive association between family communication and self-rated health. Our findings highlight the significant influence of depressive symptoms on family dynamics and health among patients in primary care.

Association between sarcopenia and depressive mood in urban-dwelling older adults: A cross-sectional study

AIM

The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between depressive mood and diagnostic components of sarcopenia.

METHODS

The study used baseline data of participants in the Toyota Prevention Intervention for Cognitive Decline and Sarcopenia study. Participants in this cross-sectional study were 432 older adults (46.5% women, mean age 72.5 ± 4.7 years). We defined sarcopenia using the diagnostic algorithm recommended by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia, and all participants were classified into a sarcopenia or healthy control group. The skeletal muscle mass was measured by bioelectrical impedance. Depressive mood was assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (range 0-15).

RESULTS

Among the 432 participants, 9.5% were classified as having sarcopenia. The mean ± SD Geriatric Depression Scale-15 scores in the control and sarcopenia groups were significantly different at 3.9 ± 2.8 and 5.3 ± 3.3, respectively (P = 0.003). Furthermore, depressive mood was significantly more prevalent in the sarcopenia group (P = 0.011). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that the Geriatric Depression Scale score was associated with grip strength (β = -0.23, P = 0.004) and walking speed (β = -0.15, P = 0.006), but not skeletal muscle mass index (β = -0.16, P = 0.142), after controlling for demographic factors, chronic diseases, inflammatory markers and physical activity.

CONCLUSIONS

Sarcopenia was associated with depressive mood. In terms of the diagnostic components of sarcopenia, depressive mood was not associated with decreased muscle mass, but was associated with low muscle strength and low physical performance. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2019; 19: 508-512.

Apathy and right caudate perfusion in idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus: A case-control study

OBJECTIVES

Apathy is prevalent in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH), a treatable disorder resulting from ventricular enlargement. We assessed the relationship between apathy and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in patients with iNPH.

METHODS

Before lumbo-peritoneal shunt surgery (LPS), 56 iNPH patients were evaluated on apathy and dysphoria subscales of the Neuropsychiatric inventory (NPI), and were divided into two groups according to NPI apathy score: 15 without apathy (iNPH-APA) and 41 with apathy (iNPH+APA). Among iNPH+APA, 29 patients were evaluated for apathy and dysphoria 3 months after LPS, and were divided into two groups on the basis of the change in NPI apathy score: 13 with improvement (iNPH+ImpAPA) and 16 without improvement in apathy (iNPH-ImpAPA). N-isopropyl-p-iodoamphetamine single photon emission computed tomography using the autoradiography method was performed before and after LPS, and rCBF was calculated in 22 regions of interest in the frontal cortex, basal ganglia, and limbic system.

RESULTS

In iNPH+APA, rCBF in the right caudate nuclei before LPS was significantly lower than that in iNPH-APA (P = 0.004; two-sample t test). Between iNPH-ImpAPA and iNPH+ImpAPA, a significant group-by-shunt interaction was observed for rCBF in only the right caudate nuclei (F_{1, 28}  = 11.75, P = 0.002; two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance), with increased rCBF in iNPH+ImpAPA but not in iNPH-ImpAPA. The significant group-by-shunt interaction persisted if change in NPI dysphoria scores was used as a covariate (F_{1, 27}  = 8.33, P = 0.008).

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings suggest that right caudate dysfunction might cause apathy in iNPH patients.

Demographic, psychological and relationship factors are associated with resource loss among pregnant women

Objectives: This study analysed the association between demographic, psychological and relationship factors and resource loss in pregnant women. Methods: Quantitative descriptive correlational study. Depressive mood, social support, relationship intimacy and resource loss were assessed in a sample of 200 pregnant women recruited from public primary-care clinics. Results: Hierarchical regression showed that being younger, having lower yearly income, and having stronger depressive mood, little relationship intimacy and little satisfaction with social support were the main factors associated with resource loss. Depressive mood accounted for most resource loss after controlling for demographic risk factors. The models show the combined influence of demographic, psychological and relationship factors in shaping resource loss. Conclusions and implications: Depressive mood was a major risk factor for resource loss among pregnant women, whereas social support and relationship intimacy had a protective role. The results highlight the importance of screening for depressive mood and level of resources during routine prenatal care, in order to identify pregnant women at risk of depression. The findings point to interventions that foster patient's emotions to help them protect resources.

Relative handgrip strength in relation to depressive mood and suicidal ideation in Koreans using the 2015 KNHANES data

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to examine the association of relative handgrip strength (RHGS) with depressive mood and suicidal ideation.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted among 2167 men and 2643 women (aged 50.9 years ± 16.7 years) who participated in the 2015 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. RHGS was defined by the handgrip strength/body mass index (BMI) ratio. Depressive mood and suicidal ideation were assessed using self-reported questionnaires. Logistic regression analysis was conducted after adjusting for sex, concurrent illness, age, education, income, smoking status, alcohol use, physical activity, and depressive mood (in the analysis for suicidal ideation).

RESULTS

Among participants, 4.0% men and 5.7% women reported serious suicidal ideation while 9.5% men and 16.0% women reported serious depressive mood. After adjusting for confounding factors, RHGS was associated with depressive mood (odds ratio [95% confidence interval] per RHGS [kg/BMI], 0.82 [0.69-0.99]) and suicidal ideation (0.73 [0.54-0.99]). In sex-specific relationship, RHGS was associated with depressive mood and suicidal ideation in women (0.71 [0.55-0.93] and 0.54 [0.34-0.85], respectively) but not in men.

CONCLUSIONS

Poorer RHGS indicates higher risk of depressive mood as well as suicidal ideation regardless of depressive mood among women.

Rapid socio-economic changes, psychosocial factors and prevalence of hypertension among men and women aged 55 years at baseline in Estonia: a 13-year follow-up study

BACKGROUND

Hypertension is an important public health problem which causes premature morbidity and mortality. Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for about 55% of deaths in Estonia.

THE PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

was to assess, through a follow-up period, the prevalence of hypertension and to observe which risk factors of cardiovascular disease impact the occurrence of the disease. The second aim of the study was to evaluate the role of psychosocial factors and personality traits among individuals with a diagnosis of hypertension.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The 330 subjects from Estonia, aged 55 years at baseline, from among whom 219 participated at follow-up. A cross-sectional study based on a self-reported questionnaire was conducted.

RESULTS

Over 13 years, the prevalence of hypertension increased from 4% to 53%. Obese (body mass index ≥30 kg/m²) individuals were four times more likely to belong to the hypertension group (p < .01). Among individuals with hypertension the depressed mood score was ≥4 points (max. 9 points) in 54.3% of participants. Depressed mood was linked with experiencing negative stressful life events (B = 0.047, 95% CI 0.016; 0.079; p < .01). Mastery had a protective impact on depressed mood. The self-rated quality of life score was lower among subjects with hypertension than among those who were not diagnosed with hypertension (p < .05).

CONCLUSIONS

According to the 13-year follow-up study, rapid socio-economic changes in Estonia have affected psychosocial health factors among 55-year-old individuals with a diagnosis of hypertension. There is a significant relationship between obesity and the development of hypertension.

Reduced cardiovascular activation following chronic stress in caregivers of people with anorexia nervosa

Caring for offspring diagnosed with eating disorders (EDs) puts caregivers under high levels of chronic stress, which have negative consequences for their health. Unfortunately, caregivers have received little attention from mental health professionals. Chronic stress experienced by informal caregivers has been associated with the alteration of body homeostasis, and therefore, the functioning of various physiological systems. This could be the basis of health problems in informal caregivers of people with EDs. The main objective of this study was to analyze physiological response, in terms of heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV), to an acute laboratory stressor in a sample of informal caregivers of individuals with anorexia nervosa (n = 24) compared to a sample of noncaregivers (n = 26). In addition, the relationship between depressive mood and the aforementioned cardiovascular response parameters was analyzed in the group of caregivers. Caregivers had higher high-frequency (HF) power HRV, and lower HR, low-frequency (LF) power HRV and LF/HF ratio values than noncaregivers, which suggests lower cardiovascular reactivity to the acute stressor than noncaregivers. Moreover, a blunted HR response to stress was associated with high depressive mood scores in caregivers. Hence, it seems that the worse the mood the lower the cardiovascular reactivity to stressful events in this population. Developing and implementing psychotherapeutic interventions focused on stress management would help caregivers to reduce their stress levels and cope more effectively with stressors.

Neural basis for the relationship between frequency of going outdoors and depressive mood in older adults

OBJECTIVE

Low frequency of going outdoors (e.g. being homebound) is associated with depressive mood; however, the underlying neural mechanism of this association is unclear. We therefore investigated the neural substrate involved in the relationship between frequency of going outdoors and depressive mood using positron emission tomography (PET), focusing on the frontal lobe and the limbic system.

METHODS

One hundred fifty-eight community-dwelling older adults aged 65-85 years underwent PET with ¹⁸ F-fluorodeoxyglucose to evaluate regional cerebral metabolic rates of glucose normalized in reference to cerebellar glucose metabolic value (normalized-rCMRglc) in six regions of interest. We also assessed depressive mood, frequency of going outdoors, and potential covariates. Depressive mood was assessed using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS).

RESULTS

The proportion of participants who reported low frequency of going outdoors (LG, every 2-3 days or less) was 36.1%. The LG group showed significantly higher GDS scores than those who reported high (once a day or more) frequency of going outdoors. A multiple linear regression analysis adjusted for potential covariates showed higher GDS scores were associated with lower normalized-rCMRglc in the ventrolateral prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortices. Adjusting for frequency of going outdoors, the association between GDS score and normalized-rCMRglc in the orbitofrontal cortex was attenuated.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results suggest that the orbitofrontal cortex may mediate the relationship between low frequency of going outdoors and depressive mood among community-dwelling older adults. These findings may help disentangle the role of going outdoors in regulating brain function to improve and/or maintain mental health among community-dwelling older adults. Quality of life in patients with an idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder in Korea

There have been few quality of life studies in patients with idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder. We compared the quality of life in idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder patients to healthy controls, patients with hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus without complication and idiopathic restless legs syndrome. Sixty patients with idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (24 female; mean age: 61.43 ± 8.99) were enrolled retrospectively. The diagnosis was established based on sleep history, overnight polysomnography, neurological examination and Mini-Mental State Examination to exclude secondary rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder. All subjects completed questionnaires, including the Short Form 36-item Health Survey for quality of life. The total quality of life score in idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder (70.63 ± 20.83) was lower than in the healthy control group (83.38 ± 7.96) but higher than in the hypertension (60.55 ± 24.82), diabetes mellitus (62.42 ± 19.37) and restless legs syndrome (61.77 ± 19.25) groups. The total score of idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder patients had a negative correlation with the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (r = -0.498, P < 0.001), Insomnia Severity Index (r = -0.645, P < 0.001) and the Beck Depression Inventory-2 (r = -0.694, P < 0.001). Multiple regression showed a negative correlation between the Short Form 36-item Health Survey score and the Insomnia Severity Index (β = -1.100, P = 0.001) and Beck Depression Inventory-2 (β = -1.038, P < 0.001). idiopathic rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder had a significant negative impact on quality of life, although this effect was less than that of other chronic disorders. This negative effect might be related to a depressive mood associated with the disease.

Relationship between anemia and depressive mood in the last trimester of pregnancy

OBJECTIVE

To compare the relationship between the severity of anemia and depressive mood in the last trimester of pregnancy.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study, enrolled a total of 450 pregnant women who attended the antenatal clinics in their third trimester for their routine antenatal follow-up. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale. The study group was divided into two groups according to presence of anemia; anemic group (Hb < 11 gr/L; n = 150) and non-anemic group (Hb ≥ 11 gr/L; n = 300) and depression scores were compared.

RESULTS

One hundred and fourteen (25.3%) women scored ≥13 points which were considered the cutoff value for depression on the EPDS. Anemia frequency was found as 33.3%. The total EPDS score was significantly higher in the anemic group (EPDS score 11 [min-max 0-29]) compared with the non-anemic group (EPDS score 7 [min-max 0-21]) (p = 0.000). Multiple regression analysis also revealed that serum Hb level was an independent factor for antenatal depressive mood.

CONCLUSIONS

As anemia is associated with higher depressive symptom levels, it should be carefully considered during pregnancy. Prospective studies are needed to confirm our results.

Depressive Mood and Testosterone Related to Declarative Verbal Memory Decline in Middle-Aged Caregivers of Children with Eating Disorders

Caring for children diagnosed with a chronic psychological disorder such as an eating disorder (ED) can be used as a model of chronic stress. This kind of stress has been reported to have deleterious effects on caregivers’ cognition, particularly in verbal declarative memory of women caregivers. Moreover, high depressive mood and variations in testosterone (T) levels moderate this cognitive decline. The purpose of this study was to characterize whether caregivers of individuals with EDs (n = 27) show declarative memory impairments compared to non-caregivers caregivers (n = 27), using for this purpose a standardized memory test (Rey’s Auditory Verbal Learning Test). Its purpose was also to examine the role of depressive mood and T in memory decline. Results showed that ED caregivers presented high depressive mood, which was associated to worse verbal memory performance, especially in the case of women. In addition, all caregivers showed high T levels. Nonetheless, only in the case of women caregivers did T show a curvilinear relationship with verbal memory performance, meaning that the increases of T were associated to the improvement in verbal memory performance, but only up to a certain point, as after such point T continued to increase and memory performance decreased. Thus, chronic stress due to caregiving was associated to disturbances in mood and T levels, which in turn was associated to verbal memory decline. These findings should be taken into account in the implementation of intervention programs for helping ED caregivers cope with caregiving situations and to prevent the risk of a pronounced verbal memory decline.

The effect of intergenerational programs on the mental health of elderly adults

OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of an intergenerational program on elderly persons' symptoms of depressive mood and in improving their sense of coherence, which is an element for successful coping with stressors.

METHOD

We evaluated an intervention research project (Research of Productivity by Intergenerational Sympathy [REPRINTS]), in which volunteers >65 years old read picture books to children in a school setting. The intervention group (REPRINTS) was recruited through intensive weekly training seminars for three months. The no-contact control group members were also recreated to participate in health checks and surveys for data collection purposes. Eventually, 26 participants in the intervention group and 54 in the control group were included for data analysis.

RESULTS

The age or gender was not significantly different between the intervention and control groups. A two-way repeated-measures ANOVA shows a time × group significant interaction effects. Analyses of the simple main effects showed that sense of meaningfulness significantly increased for members of the intervention group at all terms, with no changes in the control group over time. Multiple mediation analysis revealed that participation in the intergenerational program was associated with a sense of manageability which was also significantly related to depressive mood.

CONCLUSION

Intergenerational programs could serve as key health promoters among elderly people by decreasing the risk of social isolation and loneliness due to the greater sense of meaningfulness. However, given our limited sample size, generalizability was restricted and studies with larger cohorts are required to further validate our findings.

Exploratory Study of Depressed Adolescents' Life Narratives

Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the life stories of depressive adolescents and compare them with non-clinical adolescents' life stories. Methods: For this purpose, we compared 20 life stories of hospitalized adolescents suffering from major depressive episode with 40 life stories of adolescents attending school divided into two groups: 20 non-depressed and 20 depressed adolescents. Results: Results showed that life stories differed as a function of psychopathology. Depressed hospitalized adolescents spoke about their disease and defined themselves by their depression. The depressed adolescents in school concentrated on schooling and school achievements, while the non-depressed group defined themselves by their family, friends and inclusion in a peer group. Conclusion: These analyses allowed us to highlight specific themes mentioned by each of the three groups of adolescents. Although life stories are personal and unique, analysis of such stories allows us to better understand the daily reality of depressive adolescents and the relationships between the life events they experience, daily stressors, depression and how they construct their personal history.

Correlation between cognitive impairment and depressive mood of Thai elderly with type 2 diabetes in a primary care setting

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between cognitive impairment and depressive mood in Thai elderly with type 2 diabetes at primary care centres.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Two-hundred and eighty three (283) older people with type 2 diabetes were enrolled in this study. Mini-Cog and mini-mental state examination (MMSE) Thai 2002 were used to measure cognitive impairment while Thai geriatric screening test (TGDS) was used to measure depressive mood in all participants. Spearmen correlation was applied to determine the relationship between cognitive function and depressive mood.

RESULTS

There was a positive relationship between cognitive impairment and depressive mood in older people with type 2 diabetes. The scores from Mini-Cog and MMSE Thai 2002 were negatively correlated with TGDS scores while adjusting for the effects of age and years of education with rs = -0.1, p = 0.06 and rs = -0.2, p<0.01, respectively. Although it showed an inverse relationship of the scores between cognitive and depressive mood screening tests, the results between the tests were positive when interpreting the test scores. It means that the higher score in Mini-Cog and MMSE Thai 2002 (non-cognitive impairment) were associated with the lower score in TGDS (non-depressed mood).

CONCLUSION

The finding of this study showed that older people with type 2 diabetes who had cognitive impairment seemed to have depressive mood. Hence, these two co-morbidities should be considered in order to give an optimal care to older people with diabetes.

Depression, social support and associated factors among women living in rural China: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Few studies have focused on depression and social support in Eastern populations, especially women in rural China. Our research investigated depression among women in rural China, and studied the relationships between social support and depression.

METHODS

We recruited women ages 16 years and older from north Sichuan. Participants completed socio-demographic measures, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and the Duke Social Support Index. The analysis method included descriptive statistics and logistic regression.

RESULTS

The final sample included 1,898 participants with a mean age of 48.6 years, and the prevalence of significant depressive symptoms was 12.4%. Results suggest being unemployed, having poorer perceived health/economic status, and lower social support were positively associated with depression. Younger age and greater social support were negatively associated with depression.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provides insights on the psychological health of women in rural China and potential directions for future research. These issues are especially pertinent during this time of rapid economic transformation and outmigration in rural China.

Somatic complaints in frontotemporal dementia

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is associated with a broad spectrum of clinical characteristics. The objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence of unexplained somatic complaints in neuropathologically verified FTD. We also examined whether the somatic presentations correlated with protein pathology or regional brain pathology and if the patients with these somatic features showed more depressive traits. Ninety-seven consecutively neuropathologically verified FTLD patients were selected. All 97 patients were part of a longitudinal study of FTD and all medical records were systematically reviewed. The somatic complaints focused on were headache, musculoskeletal, gastro/urogenital and abnormal pain response. Symptoms of somatic character (either somatic complaints and/or abnormal pain response) were found in 40.2%. These patients did not differ from the total group with regard to gender, age at onset or duration. Six patients showed exaggerated reactions to sensory stimuli, whereas three patients showed reduced response to pain. Depressive traits were present in 38% and did not correlate with somatic complaints. Suicidal behavior was present in 17 patients, in 10 of these suicidal behavior was concurrent with somatic complaints. No clear correlation between somatic complaints and brain protein pathology, regional pathology or asymmetric hemispherical atrophy was found. Our results show that many FTD patients suffer from unexplained somatic complaints before and/or during dementia where no clear correlation can be found with protein pathology or regional degeneration. Somatic complaints are not covered by current diagnostic criteria for FTD, but need to be considered in diagnostics and care. The need for prospective studies with neuropathological follow up must be stressed as these phenomena remain unexplained, misinterpreted, bizarre and, in many cases, excruciating.

Parental quality of life and depressive mood following methylphenidate treatment of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder

AIM

This naturalistic study investigated the associations between quality of life and depressive mood in parents and symptom changes in attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) children.

METHODS

At baseline and at weeks 4 and 8, the parents evaluated their children, who were receiving treatment with osmotic-release oral system methylphenidate (mean dosage 36.3 ± 15.5 mg/day), using the Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham - Fourth Edition (SNAP-IV-18) scale. The parents evaluated themselves using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the World Health Organization Quality of Life Assessment, Brief Version (WHOQOL-BREF).

RESULTS

A significant reduction in SNAP-IV-18 scores and improvements in parental BDI scores and parental WHOQOL-BREF scores were observed. The decrease in BDI scores from baseline to 8 weeks was significantly associated with increases in WHOQOL-BREF sub-domain scores from baseline to 8 weeks, with a greater decrease at 4 weeks and after. The decrease in the SNAP-IV-18 hyperactivity-impulsivity score was significantly associated with increases in WHOQOL social sub-domain scores from baseline to 8 weeks. For those patients who showed a 25% or greater decrease in the SNAP-IV-18 total scores from baseline to 8 weeks, the decreases in the SNAP-IV-18 total score and in the inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity scores were significantly associated with a decrease in BDI scores from baseline to 8 weeks.

CONCLUSION

Methylphenidate treatment for ADHD was associated with both symptom alleviation in children with ADHD and improvement in parental depressive mood and quality of life, suggesting that the effects of treatment could go beyond symptom improvement in ADHD.

Rhinitis as a risk factor for depressive mood in pre-adolescents: a new approach to this relationship

BACKGROUND

Respiratory allergic symptoms impact on social life and school activities, influencing the patient's mood states. We evaluated the relationships between allergic respiratory diseases and depressive/anxious mood in a large sample of Italian middle school students, using the partial directed acyclic graph (P-DAG).

METHODS

We studied 1283 subjects aged 10-13. A health respiratory questionnaire including questions relevant to socioeconomic status (HCI) and a test for depression and anxiety were administered. All subjects performed spirometry and skin prick tests.

RESULTS

A causal role of rhinitis on depression was found: the likelihood of being depressed increased from 11.2 to 17.7%, when rhinitis was present. Moreover, a direct effect of low HCI on depressive mood was shown (p < 0.0001) as well as the correlation between anxiety and depression (p < 0.0001). Gender was not a direct causal factor for depressive mood, but their relation was mediated through anxious mood. Anxiety appeared to have a stronger association with depression than gender. Allergic sensitization was significantly related to both asthma and rhinitis (p < 0.0001, respectively). Asthma and rhinitis were also directly associated (p < 0.0001). Conversely, asthma was not directly associated with depressive mood, but their relation was mediated through rhinitis. Body mass index (BMI) and impaired lung function (IPF) were not associated with the other variables.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of this novel approach to analyzing the dynamic relationships allowed us to find a causal role of rhinitis on depressive state. Moreover, anxious condition and low socioeconomic status contributed to induce depressive mood.

Trauma exposure interacts with impulsivity in predicting emotion regulation and depressive mood

BACKGROUND

Traumatic exposure may modulate the expression of impulsive behavioral dispositions and change the implementation of emotion regulation strategies associated with depressive mood. Past studies resulted in only limited comprehension of these relationships, especially because they failed to consider impulsivity as a multifactorial construct.

OBJECTIVE

Based on Whiteside and Lynam's multidimensional model that identifies four distinct dispositional facets of impulsive-like behaviors, namely urgency, (lack of) premeditation, (lack of) perseverance, and sensation seeking (UPPS), the current study used a sample of community volunteers to investigate whether an interaction exists between impulsivity facets and lifetime trauma exposure in predicting cognitive emotion regulation and depressive mood.

METHODS

Ninety-three adults completed questionnaires measuring lifetime trauma exposure, impulsivity, cognitive emotion regulation, and depressive mood.

RESULTS

Results showed that trauma-exposed participants with a strong disposition toward urgency (predisposition to act rashly in intense emotional contexts) tended to use fewer appropriate cognitive emotion regulation strategies than other individuals. Unexpectedly, participants lacking in perseverance (predisposition to have difficulties concentrating on demanding tasks) used more appropriate emotion regulation strategies if they had experienced traumatic events during their life than if they had not. Emotion regulation mediated the path between these two impulsivity facets and depressive mood.

CONCLUSIONS

Together, these findings suggest that impulsivity has a differential impact on emotion regulation and depressive mood depending on lifetime exposure to environmental factors, especially traumatic events.

An in vitro method to investigate the microbicidal potential of human macrophages for use in psychosomatic research

OBJECTIVE

Psychological states relate to changes in circulating immune cells, but associations with immune cells in peripheral tissues such as macrophages have hardly been investigated. Here, we aimed to implement and validate a method for measuring the microbicidal potential of ex vivo isolated human monocyte-derived macrophages (HMDMs) as an indicator of macrophage activation.

METHODS

The method was implemented and validated for two blood sampling procedures (short-term cannula insertion versus long-term catheter insertion) in 79 participants (34 women, 45 men) aged between 18 and 75 years. The method principle is based on the reduction of 2-(4-iodophenyl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)-5-(2,4-dis-ulfophenyl)-2H-tetrazolium, monosodium salt (WST-1) by superoxide anions, the first in a series of pathogen-killing reactive oxygen species produced by phorbol myristate acetate-activated HMDM. Cytochrome c reduction and current generation were measured as reference methods for validation purposes. We further evaluated whether depressive symptom severity (Beck Depression Inventory) and chronic stress (Chronic Stress Screening Scale) were associated with macrophage microbicidal potential.

RESULTS

The assay induced superoxide anion responses by HMDM in all participants. Assay results depended on blood sampling procedure (cannula versus catheter insertion). Interassay variability as a measure for assay reliability was 10.92% or less. WST-1 reduction scores correlated strongly with results obtained by reference methods (cytochrome c: r = 0.57, p = .026; current generation: r values ≥ 0.47, p values <.033) and with psychological factors (depressive symptom severity: r = 0.35 [cannula insertion] versus r = -0.54 [catheter insertion]; chronic stress: r = 0.36 [cannula insertion]; p values ≤ .047).

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings suggest that the implemented in vitro method investigates microbicidal potential of HMDM in a manner that is valid and sensitive to psychological measures.

The association between physical activity and eating self-regulation in overweight and obese women

OBJECTIVE

Successful weight management relies heavily on eating and exercise behaviors. However, little is known about the association between both on a psychosocial level. This study examined the relationship between exercise and eating regulation by exploring the mediating effects of negative body image investment and depressive mood, and their stability through time.

METHODS

Analyses were conducted at two different moments (12 and 36 months), involving a sample of 221 overweight/obese women (age: 37.6 ± 7 years; BMI: 31.6 ± 4.1 kg/m(2)) that participated in a behavioral weight control intervention. Bivariate correlations and mediation analyses using Preacher & Hayes resampling procedures were conducted.

RESULTS

At 12 months, negative body image investment was the only significant mediator of the exercise-eating relationship. This variable explained larger portions of the indirect effects of structured rather than lifestyle exercise on eating. At 36 months, negative investment and to a lesser extent depressive mood partially explained the exercise-eating association.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings suggest that, besides physiological effects of exercise, psychological mechanisms related to body image and mood also explain the role of physical activity as a 'gateway behavior' for improved eating regulation in overweight women. These effects appear to be stable and may help understand the key role of exercise in long-term weight management.

A three-generational study of risk factors for childhood externalizing behavior among African Americans and Puerto Ricans

This is the first prospective study to examine the precursors of child externalizing behavior across three generations of African Americans and Puerto Ricans. Participants comprised a community cohort of male and female African Americans and Puerto Ricans (N = 366, X⁻ age = 29.4 years), who are part of an ongoing study of drug use and problem behaviors, and who had a child. Data were collected at four time waves, spanning the participants' adolescence to adulthood. Questionnaires were initially self-administered in schools in East Harlem, NY, USA (time 1). Subsequently, structured interviews were conducted by trained interviewers (times 2 and 3), and self-administered via mail (time 4). The independent variables consisted of the participants' prospective reports of their (a) relationships with their parents during adolescence, (b) depressive mood and drug use (adolescence to adulthood), (c) relationship with their oldest child between the ages of 6-13, and (d) perceptions of neighborhood crime and deterioration (in adulthood). The dependent variable was externalizing behavior in the participant's oldest child (X⁻ age = 9.6 years; SD = 2.0). Structural equation modeling showed that the parent-child relationship during participants' adolescence was linked with the participants' depressive mood and drug use which, in turn, were associated with the participants' relationship with their own child, as well as with neighborhood crime and deterioration when participants were adults. The participants' depressive mood, and relationship with their own child, as well as neighborhood crime and deterioration, each had a direct pathway to externalizing behavior in the participant's child. Findings suggest that intervention programs and public policy should address parental attributes, neighborhood factors, and, especially, parenting skills, to reduce risk factors for the intergenerational transmission of externalizing behavior.

Hostility and depressive mood: results from the Whitehall II prospective cohort study

BACKGROUND

The psychosocial vulnerability model of hostility posits that hostile individuals, given their oppositional attitudes and behaviours, are more likely to have increased interpersonal conflicts, lower social support, more stressful life events (SL-E) and higher likelihood of depression. However, little research has tested this hypothesis using large-scale prospective samples. The present study aims to assess the predictive value of hostility for depressive mood.

METHOD

Data are from 3399 participants in the Whitehall II cohort study, aged 35-55 years at baseline (phase 1 1985-1988). Cynical hostility was measured at phase 1. Depressive mood was assessed at phase 7 (2002-2004). Sociodemographic characteristics, health-related behaviours, common mental disorders and antidepressant medication intake were assessed at phase 1. SL-E and confiding/emotional support were measured at phases 1, 2 (1989-1990) and 5 (1997-1999).

RESULTS

Compared with participants in the lowest quartile of cynical hostility, those in the highest quartiles were more likely to have depressive mood [second quartile: odds ratio (OR) 1.58, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.14-2.20; third quartile: OR 2.78, 95% CI 2.03-3.77; fourth quartile: OR 4.66, 95% CI 3.41-6.36] in analysis adjusted for sociodemographic characteristics. This graded association was somewhat attenuated (18%) but remained robust to adjustments for the covariates measured at baseline and follow-up. The association was also evident in participants free of mental health difficulties at baseline.

CONCLUSIONS

Cynical hostility is a strong and robust predictor of depressive mood. Consideration of personality characteristics may be crucial to the understanding and management of depression.

Apathy and depressive mood in nursing home patients with early-onset dementia

The study explored whether apathy and depressive mood symptoms (DMS) are related to cognitive and functional features of dementia in 63 nursing home (NH) residents with early-onset dementia (EOD). All EOD residents from one NH (n = 41) and a random sample from another NH were assessed for depressive symptoms (Montgomery Asberg Depression Rating Scale [MADRS]), apathy (Neuropsychiatric Inventory [NPI]), global cognitive functions (Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE]), activities of daily living (ADL, Minimum Data Set-Resident Assessment Instrument [MDS-RAI]), and overall dementia severity (Global Deterioration Scale [GDS]). DMS were not associated with apathy and dementia severity. Regression analyses adjusted for age, gender, the type of dementia, and DMS revealed that dementia severity measures accounted, respectively, for 14% (ADL), 13% (GDS), and 9% (MMSE) of the variance in apathy. In line with previous research in older patients, the higher apathy scores were associated with more cognitive and functional problems in EOD.
