Trends in hot carrier distribution for disordered noble-transition metal alloys

We developed and tested an approach for predicting trends for efficient hot carrier generation among disordered metal alloys. We provide a simple argument for the importance of indirect transitions in the presence of disorder, thus justifying the use of joint density of states (JDOS)-like quantities for exploring these trends. We introduce a newJDOS-like quantity,JDOSK, which heuristically accounts for longer lifetimes of quasiparticles close to the Fermi energy. To demonstrate the efficacy of this new quantity, we apply it to the study of Cu50X50where X = Ag, Au, Pd and Y50Pd50where Y = Au, Ni. We predict that Ni50Pd50produces the most hot carriers among the alloys considered. The improvement in the density of excited photocarriers over the base alloy used, Cu50Ag50, is 3.4 times for 800 nm and 19 times for 1550 nm light. This boost in hot-carrier generation is consequence of the ferromagnetic nature of the Ni alloy. We argue that our method allows efficient material-specific predictions for low bias photoconductivity of alloys.

Metal Alloys-Structured Electrocatalysts: Metal-Metal Interactions, Coordination Microenvironments, and Structural Property-Reactivity Relationships

Metal alloys-structured electrocatalysts (MAECs) have made essential contributions to accelerating the practical applications of electrocatalytic devices in renewable energy systems. However, due to the complex atomic structures, varied electronic states, and abundant supports, precisely decoding the metal-metal interactions and structure-activity relationships of MAECs still confronts great challenges, which is critical to direct the future engineering and optimization of MAECs. Here, this timely review comprehensively summarizes the latest advances in creating the MAECs, including the metal-metal interactions, coordination microenvironments, and structure-activity relationships. First, the fundamental classification, design, characterization, and structural reconstruction of MAECs are outlined. Then, the electrocatalytic merits and modulation strategies of recent breakthroughs for noble and non-noble metal-structured MAECs are thoroughly discussed, such as solid solution alloys, intermetallic alloys, and single-atom alloys. Particularly, unique insights into the bond interactions, theoretical understanding, and operando techniques for mechanism disclosure are given. Thereafter, the current states of diverse MAECs with a unique focus on structural property-reactivity relationships, reaction pathways, and performance comparisons are discussed. Finally, the future challenges and perspectives for MAECs are systematically discussed. It is believed that this comprehensive review can offer a substantial impact on stimulating the widespread utilization of metal alloys-structured materials in electrocatalysis.

Supported Noble Metal Catalysts and Adsorbents with Soft Lewis Acid Functions

Heterogeneous noble metal catalysts exhibit various functions. Although their redox functions have been extensively studied, we focused on their soft Lewis acid functions. Supported Au, Pt, and Pd catalysts electrophilically attack the π-electrons of soft bases such as alkynes, alkenes, and aromatic compounds to perform addition and substitution reactions. Hydroamination, intramolecular cyclization of alkynyl carboxylic acids, isomerization of allylic esters, vinyl exchange reactions, Wacker oxidation, and oxidative homocoupling of aromatics are introduced based on a discussion of the active species and reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, the adsorption of sulfur compounds, which are soft bases, onto the supported AuNPs is discussed. The adsorption and removal of 1,3-dimethyltrisulfane (DMTS), which is the compound responsible for the stale odor of "hine-ka" in alcoholic beverages, particularly Japanese sake, is described.

Alternative to Conventional Solutions in the Development of Membranes and Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalysts for Application in Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolysis: A Review

Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) represents promising technology for the generation of high-purity hydrogen using electricity generated from renewable energy sources (solar and wind). Currently, benchmark catalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions in PEMWE are highly dispersed carbon-supported Pt-based materials. In order for this technology to be used on a large scale and be market competitive, it is highly desirable to better understand its performance and reduce the production costs associated with the use of expensive noble metal cathodes. The development of non-noble metal cathodes poses a major challenge for scientists, as their electrocatalytic activity still does not exceed the performance of the benchmark carbon-supported Pt. Therefore, many published works deal with the use of platinum group materials, but in reduced quantities (below 0.5 mg cm-2). These Pd-, Ru-, and Rh-based electrodes are highly efficient in hydrogen production and have the potential for large-scale application. Nevertheless, great progress is needed in the field of water electrolysis to improve the activity and stability of the developed catalysts, especially in the context of industrial applications. Therefore, the aim of this review is to present all the process features related to the hydrogen evolution mechanism in water electrolysis, with a focus on PEMWE, and to provide an outlook on recently developed novel electrocatalysts that could be used as cathode materials in PEMWE in the future. Non-noble metal options consisting of transition metal sulfides, phosphides, and carbides, as well as alternatives with reduced noble metals content, will be presented in detail. In addition, the paper provides a brief overview of the application of PEMWE systems at the European level and related initiatives that promote green hydrogen production.

Photochemical Synthesis of Noble Metal Nanoparticles: Influence of Metal Salt Concentration on Size and Distribution

This paper explores the photochemical synthesis of noble metal nanoparticles, specifically gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles, using a one-component photoinitiator system. The synthesis process involves visible light irradiation at a wavelength of 419 nm and an intensity of 250 mW/cm2. The radical-generating capabilities of the photoinitiators were evaluated using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The main objective of this study was to investigate how the concentration of metal salts influences the size and distribution of the nanoparticles. Proposed mechanisms for the photochemical formation of nanoparticles through photoinitiated radicals were validated using cyclic voltammetry. The results showed that the concentration of AgNO3 significantly impacted the size of silver nanoparticles, with diameters ranging from 1 to 5 nm at 1 wt% and 3 wt% concentrations, while increasing the concentration to 5 wt% led to an increase in the diameter of silver nanoparticles to 16 nm. When HAuCl4 was used instead of AgNO3, it was found that the average diameters of gold nanoparticles synthesized using both photoinitiators at different concentrations ranged between 1 and 4 nm. The findings suggest that variations in HAuCl4 concentration have minimal impact on the size of gold nanoparticles. The photoproduction of AuNPs was shown to be thermodynamically favorable, with the reduction of HAuCl4 to Au0 having ∆G values of approximately -3.51 and -2.96 eV for photoinitiators A and B, respectively. Furthermore, the photoreduction of Ag+1 to Ag0 was demonstrated to be thermodynamically feasible, with ∆G values of approximately -3.459 and -2.91 eV for photoinitiators A and B, respectively, confirming the effectiveness of the new photoinitiators on the production of nanoparticles. The synthesis of nanoparticles was monitored using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and their sizes were determined through particle size analysis of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images.

A New Impregnated Adsorbent for Noble Metal Ion Sorption

Noble metals (NM) such as gold, platinum, palladium, and rhodium are widely applied in the electronics and automotive industries. Thus, the search for cheap and selective sorbents for noble metals is economically justified. Nitrolite does not sorb noble metal ions. A new impregnated sorbent was prepared. The natural sorbent Nitrolite was impregnated with Aliquat 336 using a new warm impregnation method. After the impregnation process, Nitrolite adsorbed platinum(IV), palladium(II), and gold(III) ions from the chloride solutions. The values of the sorption capacity for palladium(II) and platinum(IV) ions were 47.63 mg/g and 51.39 mg/g, respectively, from the 0.1 M HCl model solution. The sorption capacity for gold(III) ions was estimated to be 73.43 mg/g from the 0.1 M HCl model solution. An exhausted catalytic converter was leached, and platinum(IV), palladium(II), and rhodium(III) were transferred to the chloride solution. The impregnated sorbent Nitrolite-Aliquat 336 was used in the investigations of the platinum(IV), palladium(II), and rhodium(III) ions' sorption from a real solution. The impregnated sorbent Nitrolite-Aliquat 336 proved to be suitable for the recovery of platinum(IV) and palladium(II) ions, whereas rhodium ions were not sorbed from the leached solutions. Notably, 1 M thiourea in the 1 M HCl solution desorbed platinum(IV), palladium(II), and gold(III) above 94%.

Photocatalysts Based on Graphite-like Carbon Nitride with a Low Content of Rhodium and Palladium for Hydrogen Production under Visible Light

In this study, we proposed photocatalysts based on graphite-like carbon nitride with a low content (0.01-0.5 wt.%) of noble metals (Pd, Rh) for hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation. As precursors of rhodium and palladium, labile aqua and nitrato complexes [Rh2(H2O)8(μ-OH)2](NO3)4∙4H2O and (Et4N)2[Pd(NO3)4], respectively, were proposed. To obtain metallic particles, reduction was carried out in H2 at 400 °C. The synthesized photocatalysts were studied using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The activity of the photocatalysts was tested in the hydrogen evolution from aqueous and aqueous alkaline solutions of TEOA under visible light with a wavelength of 428 nm. It was shown that the activity for the 0.01-0.5% Rh/g-C3N4 series is higher than in the case of the 0.01-0.5% Pd/g-C3N4 photocatalysts. The 0.5% Rh/g-C3N4 sample showed the highest activity per gram of catalyst, equal to 3.9 mmol gcat-1 h-1, whereas the most efficient use of the metal particles was found over the 0.1% Rh/g-C3N4 photocatalyst, with the activity of 2.4 mol per gram of Rh per hour. The data obtained are of interest and can serve for further research in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution using noble metals as cocatalysts.

Phase-Controlled Ruthenium Nanocrystals on Colloidal Polydopamine Supports and Their Catalytic Behaviors in Aerobic Oxidation Reactions

The past decade has witnessed rapidly growing interest in noble metal nanostructures adopting unconventional metastable crystal phases. In the case of Ru, chemically synthesized nanocrystals typically form thermodynamically favored hexagonal close-packed (hcp) crystal lattices, whereas it remains significantly more challenging to synthesize Ru nanocrystals in the metastable face-centered cubic (fcc) phase. In this work, we have synthesized polydopamine (PDA)-supported hcp and fcc Ru nanocrystals in a phase-selective manner through one-pot thermal reduction of appropriate Ru(III) precursors in a polyol solvent. Benefiting from the unique surface-adhesion function of PDA, we have been able to grow phase-controlled sub-5 nm Ru nanocrystals directly on colloidal PDA supports without prefunctionalizing the particle surfaces with any molecular linkers or surface-capping ligands. Success in phase-controlled synthesis of capping ligand-free Ru nanocrystals dispersed on the same support material enables us to systematically compare the intrinsic mass-specific and surface-specific activities of fcc and hcp Ru nanocatalysts toward the aerobic oxidation of a chromogenic molecular substrate, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), under a broad range of reaction conditions. We use UV-vis absorption spectroscopy to monitor the conversion of the reactant molecules into the one-electron and two-electron oxidation products in real time during Ru-catalyzed oxidation of TMB, which is found to be a mechanistically complex molecule-transforming process involving multiple elementary steps. The apparent reaction rates and detailed kinetic features are observed to be not only intimately related to the crystalline structures of the Ru nanocatalysts but also profoundly influenced by several other critical factors, such as the pH of the reaction medium, the initial concentration of TMB, Ru coverage on the PDA supports, and degree of nanoparticle aggregation.

Nanoarchitectonics of Metallene Materials for Electrocatalysis

Controlling the synthesis of metal nanostructures is one approach for catalyst engineering and performance optimization in electrocatalysis. As an emerging class of unconventional electrocatalysts, two-dimensional (2D) metallene electrocatalysts with ultrathin sheet-like morphology have gained ever-growing attention and exhibited superior performance in electrocatalysis owing to their distinctive properties originating from structural anisotropy, rich surface chemistry, and efficient mass diffusion capability. Many significant advances in synthetic methods and electrocatalytic applications for 2D metallenes have been obtained in recent years. Therefore, an in-depth review summarizing the progress in developing 2D metallenes for electrochemical applications is highly needed. Unlike most reported reviews on the 2D metallenes, this review starts by introducing the preparation of 2D metallenes based on the classification of the metals (e.g., noble metals, and non-noble metals) instead of synthetic methods. Some typical strategies for preparing each kind of metal are enumerated in detail. Then, the utilization of 2D metallenes in electrocatalytic applications, especially in the electrocatalytic conversion reactions, including the hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, fuel oxidation reaction, CO₂ reduction reaction, and N₂ reduction reaction, are comprehensively discussed. Finally, current challenges and opportunities for future research on metallenes in electrochemical energy conversion are proposed.

Bifunctional Ultrathin RhRu0.5 -Alloy Nanowire Electrocatalysts for Hydrazine-Assisted Water Splitting

Hydrazine-assisted water electrolysis offers a feasible path for low-voltage green hydrogen production. Herein, the design and synthesis of ultrathin RhRu_0.5 -alloy wavy nanowires as bifunctional electrocatalysts for both the anodic hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) and the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is reported. It is shown that the RhRu_0.5 -alloy wavy nanowires can achieve complete electrooxidation of hydrazine with a low overpotential and high mass activity, as well as improved performance for the HER. The resulting RhRu_0.5 bifunctional electrocatalysts enable, high performance hydrazine-assisted water electrolysis delivering a current density of 100 mA cm^-2 at an ultralow cell voltage of 54 mV and a high current density of 853 mA cm^-2 at a cell voltage of 0.6 V. The RhRu_0.5  electrocatalysts further demonstrate a stable operation at a high current density of 100 mA cm^-2 for 80 hours of testing period with little irreversible degradation. The overall performance greatly exceeds that of the previously reported hydrazine-assisted water electrolyzers, offering a pathway for efficiently converting hazardous hydrazine into molecular hydrogen.

On the Nature of the Partial Covalent Bond between Noble Gas Elements and Noble Metal Atoms

This article provides a discussion on the nature of bonding between noble gases (Ng) and noble metals (M) from a quantum chemical perspective by investigating compounds such as NgMY (Y=CN, O, NO₃, SO₄, CO₃), [NgM-(bipy)]+, NgMCCH, and MCCNgH complexes, where M=Cu, Ag, Au and Ng=Kr-Rn, with some complexes containing the lighter noble gas atoms as well. Despite having very low chemical reactivity, noble gases have been observed to form weak bonds with noble metals such as copper, gold, and silver. In this study, we explore the factors that contribute to this unusual bonding behavior, including the electronic structure of the atoms involved and the geometric configuration of the concerned fragments. We also investigate the metastable nature of the resulting complexes by studying the energetics of their possible dissociation and internal isomerization channels. The noble gas-binding ability of the bare metal cyanides are higher than most of their bromide counterparts, with CuCN and AgCN showing higher affinity than their chloride analogues as well. In contrast, the oxides seem to have lower binding power than their corresponding halides. In the oxide and the bipyridyl complexes, the Ng-binding ability follows the order Au > Cu > Ag. The dissociation energies calculated, considering the zero-point energy correction for possible dissociation channels, increase as we move down the noble gas group. The bond between the noble gases and the noble metals in the complexes are found to have comparable weightage of orbital and electrostatic interactions, suggestive of a partial covalent nature. The same is validated from the topological analysis of electron density.

Wavelength-Dependent Metal-Enhanced Fluorescence Biosensors via Resonance Energy Transfer Modulation

Fluorescence can be enhanced or quenched depending on the distance between the surface of a metal nanoparticle and the fluorophore molecule. Fluorescence enhancement by nearby metal particles is called metal-enhanced fluorescence (MEF). MEF shows promising potential in the field of fluorescence-based biological sensing. MEF-based biosensor systems generally fall into two platform categories: (1) a two/three-dimensional scaffold, or (2) a colloidal suspension. This review briefly summarizes the application studies using wavelength-dependent carbon dots (UV-VIS), noble metals (VIS), and upconversion nanoparticles (NIR to VIS), representative nanomaterials that contribute to the enhancement of fluorescence through the resonance energy transfer modulation and then presents a perspective on this topic.

Morphological Control Over Gel Structures of Mixed Semiconductor-Metal Nanoparticle Gel Networks with Multivalent Cations

In this work, the influence of two different types of cations on the gel formation and structure of mixed gel networks comprised of semiconductor (namely CdSe/CdS nanorods NR) and Au nanoparticles (NP) as well as on the respective monocomponent gels is investigated. Heteroassemblies built from colloidal building blocks are usually prepared by ligand removal or cross-linking, thus, both the surface chemistry and the destabilising agent play an essential role in the gelation process. Due to the diversity of the composition, morphology, and optical properties of the nanoparticles, a versatile route to fabricate functional heteroassemblies is of great demand. In the present work, the optics, morphology, and gelation mechanism of pure semiconductor and noble metal as well as their mixed nanoparticle gel networks are revealed. The influence of the gelation agents (bivalent and trivalent cations) on the structure-property correlation is elucidated by photoluminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron microscopy measurements. The selection of cations drastically influences the nano- and microstructure of the prepared gel network structures driven by the affinity of the cations to the ligands and the nanoparticle surface. This gelation technique provides a new platform to control the formation of porous assemblies based on semiconductor and metal nanoparticles.

Noble Metal Nanoparticles Decorated Boron Nitride Nanotubes for Efficient and Selective Low-Temperature Catalytic Reduction of Nitric Oxide with Carbon Monoxide

Parallel to CO₂ emission, NO_x emission has become one of the menacing problems that seek a simple, durable, and high-efficiency deNO_x catalyst. Herein, we demonstrated simple syntheses of platinum group metal nanoparticle-decorated f-BNNT (PGM = Pd, Pt, and Rh, and f-BNNT stands for -OH-functionalized boron nitride nanotubes) as a catalyst for efficient and selective reduction of NO by CO at low-temperature conditions. PGM/f-BNNT with a low amount of noble metal nanoparticles (0.7-0.8 wt %) presents very efficient catalytic activity for NO reduction as well as CO oxidation during their removal process. The removal efficiencies of NO and CO with Pd/f-BNNT, Pt/f-BNNT, and Rh/f-BNNT catalysts were investigated under various temperatures, flow rates, and reaction times, respectively. For most cases, NO catalytic reduction with CO reaction was >99% at a temperature as low as ∼200 °C. The catalyst robustness and efficiency were also verified by presenting almost 100% conversion of NO using a Rh/f-BNNT catalyst, which was aged under humid air at 600 and 700 °C for 24 h, respectively. The synergic effect of the catalytic efficacy of the well-dispersed noble metal nanoparticles and the excellent surface properties of BNNT are reasons for the high selectivity and catalytic property at a low temperature. On the basis of this investigation, we demonstrated that the noble metal nanoparticle-decorated f-BNNT catalysts are possible to save expensive PGM catalysts, such as Pt, Pd, and Rd, as much as 100 times while presenting similar or better catalytic performance for simultaneous NO and CO removals.

Modulating Electronic Environment of Ru Nanoclusters via Local Charge Transfer for Accelerating Alkaline Water Electrolysis

Compared to platinum catalysts, ruthenium (Ru) is disclosed as a promising alternative for alkaline water electrolysis due to its similar hydrogen adsorption energy and relatively lower water dissociation barrier. However, in the challenging alkaline media, the dissatisfied Volmer step during water dissociation of Ru metal prohibits its practical applications. Here, a new pathway to modulate the electronic environment of Ru catalysts via a local charge transfer strategy for tuning the water dissociation kinetics and accelerating the alkaline water electrolysis is proposed. The obtained catalysts are engineered by assembling and subsequently pyrolyzing the layer-stacked and 2D porphyrin-based Ru-N coordination polymers on nanocarbon supports. Benefiting from the well-defined Ru nanocluster-N_x -coordination bonds (Ru_nc -N_x ), unique electronic environments, and local charge transfer properties, the catalysts exhibit the exceptional activity of 17 mV overpotential at 10 mA cm^-2 and robust stability in water, which is more efficient than state-of-the-art Ru catalysts. The theoretical calculation suggests that the Ru_nc -N_x sites enhance the nucleophilic attack of water and weaken the HOH bond. This study manifests that tailoring the bond environments of Ru clusters can significantly modulate their intrinsic catalytic activities and stabilities, which may open new avenues for developing high-active and durable catalysts for water electrolysis.

Photoresponsive Inorganic Nanomaterials in Oncology

The diagnosis and treatment of cancer are continuously evolving in search of more efficient, safe, and personalized approaches. Therapies based on nanoparticles or physical stimuli-responsive substances have shown great potential to overcome the inherent shortcomings of conventional cancer therapies. In fact, nanoparticles may increase the half-life of chemotherapeutic agents or promote the targeting in cancer tissues while physical stimuli-responsive substances are more effective and safer with respect to traditional chemotherapeutic agents because of the possibility to be switched on only when needed. These 2 approaches can be combined by exploiting the ability of some inorganic nanomaterials to be activated by light, ultrasounds, magnetic fields, or ionizing radiations. Albeit the development of stimuli-responsive materials is still at the early stages, research in this field is rapidly growing since they have important advantages with respect to organic nanoparticles or molecular substances, like higher stability, and higher efficiency in converting the stimulus in heat or, in some cases, reactive oxygen species. On the other hand, the translation process is slowed down by issues related to safety and quality of the formulations. This literature review summarizes the current advancements in this research field, analysing the most promising materials and applications.

Use of a Novel Anti-Infective Noble Metal Alloy-Coated Titanium Orthopedic Nail in Patients with Open Fractures: A Case Series from Malaysia

Fracture-related infection is a serious complication in orthopedic surgery with severe consequences for the patient. We evaluated whether a novel noble metal nail-coating technology can prevent bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation without interfering with bony union. In this retrospective, single-center case series, we described the incidence of fracture-related infections and bony union achievement in patients who had Gustilo type IIIa or IIIb femoral or tibial fractures treated with noble metal alloy-coated titanium nails. Patients were treated between January 2017 and January 2019 at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Information on fracture-related infections and bone healing assessments was collected from patient records. Additionally, three independent experts retrospectively reviewed patient X-ray images from follow-up visits to further evaluate bony union achievement. Thirty-five patients were included. Infection developed in 3/35 (8.6%) patients; all cases were resolved by antibiotic therapy. Radiographs were available for 32 patients; these confirmed the presence of bone healing in 30/32 (93.8%) patients. However, according to patient records, bony union was achieved in all patients. No safety issues were recorded. This case series suggests that a noble metal alloy-coated titanium nail can prevent infection and facilitate bony union achievement in patients undergoing surgery for severe open fractures.

Rapid Dissolution of Noble Metals in Organic Solvents

The dissolution of elemental noble metals (NMs) such as gold, platinum, palladium, and copper is necessary for their recycling but carries a high environmental burden due to the use of strong acids and toxic reagents. Herein, a new approach was developed for the rapid dissolution of elemental NMs in organic solvents using mixtures of triphenylphosphine dichloride or oxalyl chloride and hydrogen peroxide, forming metal chloride salts directly. Almost quantitative dissolution of metallic Au, Pd, and Cu was observed within minutes at room temperature. For Pt, dissolution was achieved, albeit more slowly, using the chlorinating oxidant alone but was inhibited on addition of hydrogen peroxide. After leaching, transfer of PtIV and PdII chloride salts from the organic phase into a 6 m HCl aqueous phase facilitated their separation by precipitation of PtIV using a simple diamide ligand. In contrast, the retention of AuIII chloridometalate in the organic phase allowed its selective separation from Ni and Cu from a leachate solution obtained from electronic CPUs. This new approach has potential application in the hydrometallurgical leaching and purification of NMs from ores, spent catalysts, and electronic and nano-wastes.

Reversible Sorptive Preconcentration of Noble Metals Followed by FI-ICP-MS Determination

In this paper, we propose the combined procedure of noble metal (NM) determination, including fire assay, acid digestion, and reversible dynamic sorptive preconcentration, followed by flow-injection ICP-MS. Reversible preconcentration of all NMs was carried out using micro-column packed new PVBC-VP sorbent and elution with a mixture of thiourea, potassium thiocyanate, and HCl, which recovers Pd, Ir, Pt, and Au by 95% and Ru, and Rh by 90%. The proposed procedure was approved using certified reference materials.

Noble Metals Deposited LaMnO3 Nanocomposites for Photocatalytic H2 Production

Due to the growing demand for hydrogen, the photocatalytic hydrogen production from alcohols present an intriguing prospect as a potential source of low-cost renewable energy. The noble metals (Ag, Au, Pd and Pt) deposited LaMnO₃ nanocomposites were synthesized by a non-conventional green bio-reduction method using aqueous lemon peel extract, which acts as both reducing and capping agent. The successful deposition of the noble metals on the surface of LaMnO₃ was verified by using powder XRD, FTIR, TEM, N₂-physisorption, DR UV-vis spectroscopy, and XPS techniques. The photocatalytic activity of the synthesized nanocomposites was tested for photocatalytic H₂ production under visible light irradiation. Different photocatalytic reaction parameters such as reaction time, pH, catalyst mass and reaction temperature were investigated to optimize the reaction conditions for synthesized nanocomposites. Among the synthesized noble metal deposited LaMnO₃ nanocomposites, the Pt-LaMnO₃ nanocomposite offered superior activity for H₂ production. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the Pt-LaMnO₃ was found as a result from low bandgap energy, high photoelectrons generation and enhanced charge separation due to deposition of Pt nanoparticles. The effective noble metal deposition delivers a new route for the development of plasmonic noble metal-LaMnO₃ nanocomposites for photocatalytic reforming of aqueous methanol to hydrogen.

Noble-Metal-Based Hollow Mesoporous Nanoparticles: Synthesis Strategies and Applications

As second-generation mesoporous materials, mesoporous noble metals (NMs) are of significant interest for their wide applications in catalysis, sensing, bioimaging, and biotherapy owing to their structural and metallic features. The introduction of interior hollow cavity into NM-based mesoporous nanoparticles (MNs), which subtly integrate hierarchical hollow and mesoporous structure into one nanoparticle, produces a new type of hollow MNs (HMNs). Benefiting from their higher active surface, better electron/mass transfer, optimum electronic structure, and nanoconfinement space, NM-based HMNs exhibit their high efficiency in enhancing catalytic activity and stability and tuning catalytic selectivity. In this review, recent progress in the design, synthesis, and catalytic applications of NM-based HMNs is summarized, including the findings of the groups. Five main strategies for synthesizing NM-based HMNs, namely silica-assisted surfactant-templated nucleation, surfactant-templated sequential nucleation, soft "dual"-template, Kirkendall effect in synergistic template, and galvanic-replacement-assisted surfactant template, are described in detail. In addition, the applications in ethanol oxidation electrocatalysis and hydrogenation reactions are discussed to highlight the high activity, enhanced stability, and optimal selectivity of NM-based HMNs in (electro)catalysis. Finally, the further outlook that may lead the directions of synthesis and applications of NM-based HMNs is prospected.

Normal temperature catalytic degradation of toluene over Pt/TiO2

Normal temperature catalytic ozonation is an effective method for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). A series of TiO₂-supported noble metal catalysts were synthesized by a facile impregnation method. The as-prepared catalysts were evaluated for the catalytic oxidation of toluene. It was determined that the 1 wt%Pt/TiO₂ exhibited outstanding performance that 65% conversion of toluene was achieved with the space velocity of 30,000 h^-1 even at room temperature (25°C). The structure-activity relationship of various catalysts was investigated via BET, XRD, SEM, TEM as well as XPS. The results indicated that the uniform dispersion of Pt nanoparticles, abundant surface adsorbed oxygen species as well as the strong interaction between Pt and TiO₂ favoured toluene degradation at normal temperature. Based on FT-IR, a simplified reaction scheme was proposed: toluene was first oxidized to benzoate species then alcohol species, ketones, carboxyl acids, which was finally degraded into CO₂ and H₂O. The low activation energy of 1 wt%Pt/TiO₂ determined to be 47 kJ mol^-1 also benefited for toluene degradation at ambient temperature.

Pressure-Induced Amorphization and Crystallization of Heterophase Pd Nanostructures

Control of structural ordering in noble metals is very important for the exploration of their properties and applications, and thus it is highly desired to have an in-depth understanding of their structural transitions. Herein, through high-pressure treatment, the mutual transformations between crystalline and amorphous phases are achieved in Pd nanosheets (NSs) and nanoparticles (NPs). The amorphous domains in the amorphous/crystalline Pd NSs exhibit pressure-induced crystallization (PIC) phenomenon, which is considered as the preferred structural response of amorphous Pd under high pressure. On the contrary, in the spherical crystalline@amorphous core-shell Pd NPs, pressure-induced amorphization (PIA) is observed in the crystalline core, in which the amorphous-crystalline phase boundary acts as the initiation site for the collapse of crystalline structure. The distinct PIC and PIA phenomena in two different heterophase Pd nanostructures might originate from the different characteristics of Pd NSs and NPs, including morphology, amorphous-crystalline interface, and lattice parameter. This work not only provides insights into the phase transition mechanisms of amorphous/crystalline heterophase noble metal nanostructures, but also offers an alternative route for engineering noble metals with different phases.

The Importance of Decarbonylation Mechanisms in the Atomic Layer Deposition of High-Quality Ru Films by Zero-Oxidation State Ru(DMBD)(CO)3

Achieving facile nucleation of noble metal films through atomic layer deposition (ALD) is extremely challenging. To this end, η⁴ -2,3-dimethylbutadiene ruthenium⁽⁰⁾ tricarbonyl (Ru(DMBD)(CO)₃ ), a zero-valent complex, has recently been reported to achieve good nucleation by ALD at relatively low temperatures and mild reaction conditions. The authors study the growth mechanism of this precursor by in situ quartz-crystal microbalance and quadrupole mass spectrometry during Ru ALD, complemented by ex situ film characterization and kinetic modeling. These studies reveal that Ru(DMBD)(CO)₃ produces high-quality Ru films with excellent nucleation properties. This results in smooth, coalesced films even at low film thicknesses, all important traits for device applications. However, Ru deposition follows a kinetically limited decarbonylation reaction scheme, akin to typical chemical vapor deposition processes, with a strong dependence on both temperature and reaction timescale. The non-self-limiting nature of the kinetically driven mechanism presents both challenges for ALD implementation and opportunities for process tuning. By surveying reports of similar precursors, it is suggested that the findings can be generalized to the broader class of zero-oxidation state carbonyl-based precursors used in thermal ALD, with insight into the design of effective saturation studies.

Evaluation of Electrocatalytic Activity of Noble Metal Catalysts Toward Nitrogen Reduction Reaction in Aqueous Solutions under Ambient Conditions

Electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is intensively investigated by researchers for its potential to be the next-generation technology to produce ammonia. Many attempts have been made to explore the possibility of electrochemical ammonia production catalyzed by noble metals. However, the produced ammonia in most reported cases is in ppm level or even lower, which is susceptible to potential contaminants in experiments, leading to fluctuating or even contradictory results. Herein, a rigorous procedure was adopted to systematically evaluated the performance of commercial noble metal nanocatalysts toward NRR. No discernible amount of ammonia was detected in either acidic or alkaline solutions. Further, nitrogen-containing contaminants in catalysts that might cause false positive results were detected and characterized. An effective way to remove pre-existing pollutants by consecutive cyclic voltammetry scan was proposed, helping to obtain reliable and reproducible results.

Tuning Materials-Binding Peptide Sequences toward Gold- and Silver-Binding Selectivity with Bayesian Optimization

Peptide sequence engineering can potentially deliver materials-selective binding capabilities, which would be highly attractive in numerous biotic and abiotic nanomaterials applications. However, the number of known materials-selective peptide sequences is small, and identification of new sequences is laborious and haphazard. Previous attempts have sought to use machine learning and other informatics approaches that rely on existing data sets to accelerate the discovery of materials-selective peptides, but too few materials-selective sequences are known to enable reliable prediction. Moreover, this knowledge base is expensive to expand. Here, we combine a comprehensive and integrated experimental and modeling effort and introduce a Bayesian Effective Search for Optimal Sequences (BESOS) approach to address this challenge. Through this combined approach, we significantly expand the data set of Au-selective peptide sequences and identify an additional Ag-selective peptide sequence. Analysis of the binding motifs for the Ag-binders offers a roadmap for future prediction with machine learning, which should guide identification of further Ag-selective sequences. These discoveries will enable wider and more versatile integration of Ag nanoparticles in biological platforms.

Progress on Noble Metal-Based Catalysts Dedicated to the Selective Catalytic Ammonia Oxidation into Nitrogen and Water Vapor (NH3-SCO)

A recent development for selective ammonia oxidation into nitrogen and water vapor (NH3-SCO) over noble metal-based catalysts is covered in the mini-review. As ammonia (NH3) can harm human health and the environment, it led to stringent regulations by environmental agencies around the world. With the enforcement of the Euro VI emission standards, in which a limitation for NH3 emissions is proposed, NH3 emissions are becoming more and more of a concern. Noble metal-based catalysts (i.e., in the metallic form, noble metals supported on metal oxides or ion-exchanged zeolites, etc.) were rapidly found to possess high catalytic activity for NH3 oxidation at low temperatures. Thus, a comprehensive discussion of property-activity correlations of the noble-based catalysts, including Pt-, Pd-, Ag- and Au-, Ru-based catalysts is given. Furthermore, due to the relatively narrow operating temperature window of full NH3 conversion, high selectivity to N2O and NOx as well as high costs of noble metal-based catalysts, recent developments are aimed at combining the advantages of noble metals and transition metals. Thus, also a brief overview is provided about the design of the bifunctional catalysts (i.e., as dual-layer catalysts, mixed form (mechanical mixture), hybrid catalysts having dual-layer and mixed catalysts, core-shell structure, etc.). Finally, the general conclusions together with a discussion of promising research directions are provided.

Catalytic Oxidation of CO and Benzene over Metal Nanoparticles Loaded on Hierarchical MFI Zeolite

In order to obtain highly active catalytic materials for oxidation of carbon monoxide and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), monometallic platinum, copper, and palladium catalysts were prepared by using of two types of ZSM-5 zeolite as supports—parent ZSM-5 and the same one treated by HF and NH₄F buffer solution. The catalyst samples, obtained by loading of platinum, palladium, and copper on ZSM-5 zeolite treated using HF and NH₄F buffer solution, were more active in the reaction of CO and benzene oxidation compared with catalyst samples containing untreated zeolite. The presence of secondary mesoporosity played a positive role in increasing the catalytic activity due to improved reactant diffusion. The only exception was the copper catalysts in the reaction of CO oxidation, in which case the catalyst, based on untreated ZSM-5 zeolite, was more active. In this specific case, the key role is played by the oxidative state of copper species loaded on the ZSM-5 zeolites.

Ab initiophase diagram of silver

Silver has been considered as one of the simple one-phase materials that do not exhibit high pressure or high temperature polymorphism. The solid phase of Ag at ambient conditions is face-centered cubic (fcc) one. However, very recently another solid phase of silver, body-centered cubic (bcc) one, was detected in shock-wave (SW) experiments, and a more sophisticated phase diagram of Ag with the two solid phases was published by Smirnov. In this work, using a suite ofab initioquantum molecular dynamics (QMD) simulations based on the Z methodology which combines both direct Z method for the simulation of melting curves and inverse Z method for the calculation of solid-solid phase boundaries, we refine the phase diagram of Smirnov. We calculate the melting curves of both fcc-Ag and bcc-Ag and obtain an equation for the fcc-bcc solid-solid phase transition boundary. We also obtain the thermal equation of state of Ag which is in agreement with experimental data and QMD simulations. We argue that, despite being a polymorphic rather than a simple one-phase material, silver can be considered as an SW standard.

Maximizing the Catalytic Performance of Pd@Aux Pd1-x Nanocubes in H2 O2 Production by Reducing Shell Thickness to Increase Compositional Stability

We report a simple route based upon seed-mediated growth to the synthesis of Pd@Au_x Pd_1-x (0.8≤x≤1) core-shell nanocubes. Benefiting from the well-defined {100} facets and an optimal Au/Pd ratio for the surface, the nanocubes bearing a shell made of Au_0.95 Pd_0.05 work as an efficient electrocatalyst toward H₂ O₂ production, with high selectivity of 93-100 % in the low-overpotential region of 0.4-0.7 V. When the Au_0.95 Pd_0.05 alloy is confined to a shell of only three atomic layers in thickness, the electrocatalyst is able to maintain its surface structure and elemental composition, endowing continuous and stable production of H₂ O₂ during oxygen reduction at a high rate of 1.62 mol g_(Pd+Au) ^-1  h^-1 . This work demonstrates a versatile route to the rational development of active and durable electrocatalysts based upon alloy nanocrystals.

Noble Metal Nanoparticles Stabilized by Hyper-Cross-Linked Polystyrene as Effective Catalysts in Hydrogenation of Arenes

This work is addressing the arenes' hydrogenation-the processes of high importance for petrochemical, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Noble metal (Pd, Pt, Ru) nanoparticles (NPs) stabilized in hyper-cross-linked polystyrene (HPS) were shown to be active and selective catalysts in hydrogenation of a wide range of arenes (monocyclic, condensed, substituted, etc.) in a batch mode. HPS effectively stabilized metal NPs during hydrogenation in different medium (water, organic solvents) and allowed multiple catalyst reuses.

Strong Metal-Support Interaction for 2D Materials: Application in Noble Metal/TiB2 Heterointerfaces and their Enhanced Catalytic Performance for Formic Acid Dehydrogenation

Strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) is a phenomenon commonly observed on heterogeneous catalysts. Here, direct evidence of SMSI between noble metal and 2D TiB₂ supports is reported. The temperature-induced TiB₂ overlayers encapsulate the metal nanoparticles, resulting in core-shell nanostructures that are sintering-resistant with metal loadings as high as 12.0 wt%. The TiO_x -terminated TiB₂ surfaces are the active sites catalyzing the dehydrogenation of formic acid at room temperature. In contrast to the trade-off between stability and activity in conventional SMSI, TiB₂ -based SMSI promotes catalytic activity and stability simultaneously. By optimizing the thickness and coverage of the overlayer, the Pt/TiB₂ catalyst displays an outstanding hydrogen productivity of 13.8 mmol g^-1 _cat h^-1 in 10.0 m aqueous solution without any additive or pH adjustment, with >99.9% selectivity toward CO₂ and H₂ . Theoretical studies suggest that the TiB₂ overlayers are stabilized on different transition metals through an interplay between covalent and electrostatic interactions. Furthermore, the computationally determined trends in metal-TiB₂ interactions are fully consistent with the experimental observations regarding the extent of SMSI on different transition metals. The present research introduces a new means to create thermally stable and catalytically active metal/support interfaces for scalable chemical and energy applications.

Investigation of Interaction of Noble Metals (Cu, Ag, Au, Pt and Ir) with Nanosheets

Two-dimensional nanomaterials, such as graphene and hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets, have attracted tremendous interest in the research community and as a starting point for the development of nanotechnology. Using classical applied mathematical modeling, we derive explicit analytical expressions to determine the binding energies of noble metals, including copper, silver, gold, platinum and iridium (Cu, Ag, Au, Pt and Ir) atoms, on graphene and hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets. We adopt the 6-12 Lennard-Jones potential function, together with the continuous approach, to determine the preferred minimum energy position of an offset metal atom above the surface of the graphene and hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets. The main results of this study are analytical expressions of the interaction energies, which we then utilize to report the mechanism of adsorption of the metal atoms on graphene and hexagonal boron nitride surfaces. The results show that the minimum binding energy occured when Cu, Ag, Au, Pt and Ir were set at perpendicular distances in the region from 3.302 Å to 3.683 Å above the nanosheet surface, which correspond to adsorption energies in the region ranging from 0.842 to 2.978 (kcal/mol). Our results might assist in providing information on the interaction energies between the metal atoms and the two-dimensional nanomaterials.

Valeric Biofuel Production from γ-Valerolactone over Bifunctional Catalysts with Moderate Noble-Metal Loading

SiO2 -Al2 O3 -supported Ru, Ir and Pt-based catalysts with moderate metal loading (1 %) were tested for the first time in the production of pentyl valerate (PV) in liquid phase from γ-valerolactone, pentanol (in excess) and H2 . The acidity of these bifunctional catalysts, plays a key role in the one-pot process comprising two consecutive acid-catalyzed reactions and a metal-catalyzed one. Metal dispersion also shown to be relevant for the conversion of the pentyl pentenoate intermediate into PV by hydrogenation over the metal sites. Pt/SA catalyst with the highest surface acidity and metal dispersion reached optimal GVL conversion with a PV yield of 90.0 % after 10 h, exhibiting a PV productivity of 300 mmol/gM .h, i. e. a value between three and four times higher than the best result reported until now (91.8 mmol/gM .h). These findings highlight the potential that noble metal-based catalyst with moderate metal loading have in the valorization of biomass-derived platform molecules such as γ-valerolactone.

Comparative Study of the Efficiency of Different Noble Metals Supported on Hydroxyapatite in the Catalytic Lean Methane Oxidation under Realistic Conditions

The combustion of lean methane was studied over palladium, rhodium, platinum, and ruthenium catalysts supported on hydroxyapatite (HAP). The samples were prepared by wetness impregnation and thoroughly characterized by BET, XRD, UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, H₂-TPR, OSC, CO chemisorption, and TEM techniques. It was found that the Pd/HAP and Rh/HAP catalysts exhibited a higher activity compared with Pt/HAP and Ru/HAP samples. Thus, the degree of oxidation of the supported metal under the reaction mixture notably influenced its catalytic performance. Although Pd and Rh catalysts could be easily re-oxidized, the re-oxidation of Pt and Ru samples appeared to be a slow process, resulting in small amounts of metal oxide active sites. Feeding water and CO₂ was found to have a negative effect, which was more pronounced in the presence of water, on the activity of Pd and Rh catalysts. However, the inhibiting effect of CO₂ and H₂O decreased by increasing the reaction temperature.

Gas sensing materials roadmap

Gas sensor technology is widely utilized in various areas ranging from home security, environment and air pollution, to industrial production. It also hold great promise in non-invasive exhaled breath detection and an essential device in future internet of things. The past decade has witnessed giant advance in both fundamental research and industrial development of gas sensors, yet current efforts are being explored to achieve better selectivity, higher sensitivity and lower power consumption. The sensing layer in gas sensors have attracted dominant attention in the past research. In addition to the conventional metal oxide semiconductors, emerging nanocomposites and graphene-like two-dimensional materials also have drawn considerable research interest. This inspires us to organize this comprehensive 2020 gas sensing materials roadmap to discuss the current status, state-of-the-art progress, and present and future challenges in various materials that is potentially useful for gas sensors.

Porous Noble Metal Electrocatalysts: Synthesis, Performance, and Development

Active sites (intrinsic activity, quantity, and distribution), electron transfer, and mass diffusion are three important factors affecting the performance of electrocatalysts. Composed of highly active components which are built into various network structures, porous noble metal is an inherently promising electrocatalysts. In recent years, great efforts have been made to explore new efficient synthesis methods and establish structural-performance relationships in the field of porous noble metal electrocatalysis. In this review, the very recent progress in strategies for preparing porous noble metal, including innovation and deeper understanding of traditional methods is summarized. A discussion of relationship between porous noble metal structure and electrocatalytic performance, such as accessibility of active sites, connectivity of skeleton structures, channels dimensions, and hierarchical structures, is provided.

Nanocomposite-Based Matrices in Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry for Small-Molecule Analysis

The efficient detection of small molecules is of significance for environmental monitoring, pharmacology, metabolomics, and lipidomics. The laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI MS) platform enables high sensitivity, accuracy, resolution, and throughput in molecular analysis, but its analytical capability with respect to small molecules is limited due to inherent drawbacks arising from conventional organic matrices. The selection of an appropriate matrix is thus a precondition for small molecule detection by LDI MS. To date, various inorganic matrices have been developed, with a growing interest in composite materials displaying synergetic effects. This Minireview highlights the development of nanocomposites as LDI matrices driven by numerous innovations in material science, and their emerging use in small-molecule analysis.

Recent Progress of the Practical Applications of the Platinum Nanoparticle-Based Electrochemistry Biosensors

The detection of biomolecules using various biosensors with excellent sensitivity, selectivity, stability, and reproducibility, is of great significance in the analytical and biomedical fields toward achieving their practical applications. Noble metal nanoparticles are favorable candidates due to their unique optical, surface electrical effect, and catalytic properties. Among these noble metal nanoparticles, platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) have been widely employed for the detection of bioactive substances such as glucose, glutamic acid, and hormones. However, there is still a long way to go before the potential challenges in the practical applications of biomolecules are fully overcome. Bearing this in mind, combined with our research experience, we summarized the recent progress of the Pt NP-based biosensors and highlighted the current problems that exist in their practical applications. The current review would provide fundamental guidance for future applications using the Pt NP-based biosensors in food, agricultural, and medical fields.

Effect of Co3O4 Nanoparticles on Improving Catalytic Behavior of Pd/Co3O4@MWCNT Composites for Cathodes in Direct Urea Fuel Cells

Direct urea fuel cells (DUFCs) have recently drawn increased attention as sustainable power generation devices because of their considerable advantages. Nonetheless, the kinetics of the oxidation-reduction reaction, particularly the electrochemical oxidation and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), in direct urea fuel cells are slow and hence considered to be inefficient. To overcome these disadvantages in DUFCs, Pd nanoparticles loaded onto Co₃O₄ supported by multi-walled carbon nanotubes (Pd/Co₃O₄@MWCNT) were employed as a promising cathode catalyst for enhancing the electrocatalytic activity and oxygen reduction reaction at the cathode in DUFCs. Co₃O₄@MWCNT and Pd/Co₃O₄@MWCNT were synthesized via a facile two-step hydrothermal process. A Pd/MWCNT catalyst was also prepared and evaluated to study the effect of Co₃O₄ on the performance of the Pd/Co₃O₄@MWCNT catalyst. A current density of 13.963 mA cm^-2 and a maximum power density of 2.792 mW cm^-2 at 20 °C were obtained. Pd/Co₃O₄@MWCNT is a prospectively effective cathode catalyst for DUFCs. The dilution of Pd with non-precious metal oxides in adequate amounts is economically conducive to highly practical catalysts with promising electrocatalytic activity in fuel cell applications.

Room-Temperature Catalyst Enables Selective Acetone Sensing

Catalytic packed bed filters ahead of gas sensors can drastically improve their selectivity, a key challenge in medical, food and environmental applications. Yet, such filters require high operation temperatures (usually some hundreds °C) impeding their integration into low-power (e.g., battery-driven) devices. Here, we reveal room-temperature catalytic filters that facilitate highly selective acetone sensing, a breath marker for body fat burn monitoring. Varying the Pt content between 0-10 mol% during flame spray pyrolysis resulted in Al2O3 nanoparticles decorated with Pt/PtOx clusters with predominantly 5-6 nm size, as revealed by X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. Most importantly, Pt contents above 3 mol% removed up to 100 ppm methanol, isoprene and ethanol completely already at 40 °C and high relative humidity, while acetone was mostly preserved, as confirmed by mass spectrometry. When combined with an inexpensive, chemo-resistive sensor of flame-made Si/WO3, acetone was detected with high selectivity (≥225) over these interferants next to H2, CO, form-/acetaldehyde and 2-propanol. Such catalytic filters do not require additional heating anymore, and thus are attractive for integration into mobile health care devices to monitor, for instance, lifestyle changes in gyms, hospitals or at home.

In Search of Excellence: Convex versus Concave Noble Metal Nanostructures for Electrocatalytic Applications

Controlling the shape of noble metal nanoparticles is a challenging but important task in electrocatalysis. Apart from hollow and nanocage structures, concave noble metal nanoparticles are considered a new class of unconventional electrocatalysts that exhibit superior electrocatalytic properties as compared with those of conventional nanoparticles (including convex and flat ones). Herein, several facile and highly reproducible routes for synthesizing nanostructured concave noble metal materials reported in the literature are discussed, together with their advantages over noble metal nanoparticles with convex shapes. In addition, possible ways of optimizing the synthesis procedure and enhancing the electrocatalytic characteristics of concave metal nanoparticles are suggested. Nanostructured noble metals with concave features are found to show better catalytic activity and stability hence improve their practical applicability in electrocatalysis.

Polyelemental Nanoparticles as Catalysts for a Li-O2 Battery

The development of highly efficient catalysts in the cathodes of rechargeable Li-O₂ batteries is a considerable challenge. Polyelemental catalysts consisting of two or more kinds of hybridized catalysts are particularly interesting because the combination of the electrochemical properties of each catalyst component can significantly facilitate oxygen evolution and oxygen reduction reactions. Despite the recent advances that have been made in this field, the number of elements in the catalysts has been largely limited to two metals. In this study, we demonstrate the electrochemical behavior of Li-O₂ batteries containing a wide range of catalytic element combinations. Fourteen different combinations with single, binary, ternary, and quaternary combinations of Pt, Pd, Au, and Ru were prepared on carbon nanofibers (CNFs) via a joule heating route. Importantly, the Li-O₂ battery performance could be significantly improved when using a polyelemental catalyst with four elements. The cathode containing quaternary nanoparticles (Pt-Pd-Au-Ru) exhibited a reduced overpotential (0.45 V) and a high discharge capacity based on total cathode weight at 9130 mAh g^-1, which was ∼3 times higher than that of the pristine CNF electrode. This superior electrochemical performance is be attributed to an increased catalytic activity associated with an enhanced O₂ adsorbability by the quaternary nanoparticles.

Alchemy-Inspired Green Paper for Spontaneous Recovery of Noble Metals

Recycling of noble metal from waste materials, namely from electronic wastes (e-waste), spent catalyst, and industrial wastewater, is attracting growing attention due to the scarcity, economic importance, and criticality of those noble metals. Traditional techniques reported to date require toxic reagent and strict extraction conditions, which deeply hinders the development of precious metal recovery in complex environments. Here, an approach is proposed that uses flexible metallic transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) paper, which provides abundant active sites for spontaneous adsorption and reduction of noble metal ions, as an Alchemy-inspired template to recover noble metal in an efficient and green way without the aid of reductant and heating. The metallic TMD (MoS₂ , WS₂ ) paper is shown to rapidly extract five noble metal ions (Au, Pd, Pt, Ag, and Ru) from complex samples containing various interferents. This unique property endows the metallic TMD paper with gifted ability in extracting gold from e-waste, and recovering platinum group metals (palladium and platinum) from spent catalysts, which provides a blueprint for the design of next-generation green platforms for noble metal regeneration.

Scalable, Green Fabrication of Single-Crystal Noble Metal Films and Nanostructures for Low-Loss Nanotechnology Applications

The confinement of spatially extended electromagnetic waves to nanometer-scale metal structures can be harnessed for application in information processing, energy harvesting, sensing, and catalysis. Metal nanostructures enable negative refractive index, subwavelength resolution imaging, and patterning through engineered metamaterials and promise technologies that will operate in the quantum plasmonics regime. However, the controlled fabrication of high-definition single-crystal subwavelength metal nanostructures has remained a significant hurdle due to the tendency for polycrystalline metal growth using conventional physical vapor deposition methods and the challenges associated with placing solution-grown nanocrystals in desired orientations and locations on a surface to manufacture functional devices. Here, we introduce a scalable and green wet chemical approach to monocrystalline noble metal thin films and nanostructures. The method enables the fabrication of ultrasmooth, epitaxial, single-crystal films of controllable thickness that are ideal for the subtractive manufacture of nanostructures through ion beam milling and additive crystalline nanostructure via lithographic patterning for large-area, single-crystal metasurfaces and high aspect ratio nanowires. Our single-crystal nanostructures demonstrate improved feature quality, pattern transfer yield, reduced optical and resistive losses, and tailored local fields to yield greater optical response and improved stability compared to those of polycrystalline structures-supporting greater local field enhancements and enabling practical advances at the nanoscale.

On the Crucial Role of Isolated Electronic States in the Thermal Reaction of ReC+ with Dihydrogen

Presented here is that isolated, long‐lived electronic states of ReC⁺ serve as the root cause for distinctly different reactivities of this diatomic ion in the thermal activation of dihydrogen. Detailed high‐level quantum chemical calculations support the experimental findings obtained in the highly diluted gas phase using FT‐ICR mass spectrometry. The origin for the existence of these long‐lived excited electronic states and the resulting implications for the varying mechanisms of dihydrogen splitting are addressed.

Noble Metal Nanoparticles Incorporated Siliceous TUD-1 Mesoporous Nano-Catalyst for Low-Temperature Oxidation of Carbon Monoxide

This report, for the first time, demonstrated the low-temperature oxidation of carbon monoxide (CO) using nano-catalysts consisting of noble metal nanoparticles incorporated in TUD-1 mesoporous silica nano-structures synthesized via a one-pot surfactant-free sol–gel synthesis methodology. Herein, we investigated a nano-catalyst, represented as M-TUD-1 (M = Rh, Pd, Pt and Au), which was prepared using a constant Si/M ratio of 100. The outcome of the analytical studies confirmed the formation of a nano-catalyst ranging from 5 to 10 nm wherein noble metal nanoparticles were distributed uniformly onto the mesopores of TUD-1. The catalytic performance of M-TUD-1 catalysts was examined in the environmentally impacted CO oxidation reaction to CO₂. The catalytic performance of Au-TUD-1 benchmarked other M-TUD-1 catalysts and a total conversion of CO was obtained at 303 K. The activity of the other nano-catalysts was obtained as Pt-TUD-1 > Pd-TUD-1 > Rh-TUD-1, with a total CO conversion at temperatures of 308, 328 and 348 K, respectively. The Au-TUD-1 exhibited a high stability and reusability as indicated by the observed high activity after ten continuous runs without any treatment. The outcomes of this research suggested that M-TUD-1 are promising nano-catalysts for the removal of the toxic CO gas and can also potentially be useful to protect the environment where a long-life time, cost-effectiveness and industrial scaling-up are the key approaches.

Recent Achievements in Noble Metal Catalysts with Unique Nanostructures for Liquid Fuel Cells

In recent years, research efforts have been focused on the design and fabrication of highly efficient catalysts for liquid fuel cells, because the use of these cells is an important approach for alleviating environmental pollution and energy crises. However, the limitations of the catalytic performance of industrial Pt/C have strongly hindered the development of these fuel cells. The catalyst morphology has a strong impact on its performance; nanostructured catalysts are preferred as they offer large specific surface area and more exposed active centers. In view of this, many catalysts with unique structures have been synthesized in recent years, all of which show excellent catalytic performance characteristics. Despite these achievements, few efforts have been made to survey this field comprehensively. Herein, the recent advances in catalysts for liquid fuel cells are summarized, with a focus on noble metal catalysts with unique morphologies such as nanowires, nanosheets, and assembly structures. Their formation mechanisms are discussed critically. The relationship between the unique morphologies and excellent performance of these catalysts is also explored. This work may provide guidelines for the further development of liquid fuel cells.

Disturbance-Promoted Unconventional and Rapid Fabrication of Self-Healable Noble Metal Gels for (Photo-)Electrocatalysis

As an emerging class of porous materials, noble metal aerogels (NMAs) have drawn tremendous attention and displayed unprecedented potential in diverse fields. However, the development of NMAs is impeded by the fabrication methods because of their time- and cost-consuming procedures, limited generality, and elusive understanding of the formation mechanisms. Here, by revealing the self-healing behavior of noble metal gels and applying it in the gelation process at a disturbing environment, an unconventional and conceptually new strategy, i.e., a disturbance-promoted gelation method, is developed by introducing an external force field. It overcomes the diffusion limitation in the gelation process, thus producing monolithic gels within 1-10 min at room temperature, 2-4 orders of magnitude faster than for most reported methods. Moreover, versatile NMAs are acquired by using this method, and their superior (photo-)electrocatalytic properties are demonstrated for the first time in light of combined catalytic and optic properties.

Anticancer palladium-doped magnesia nanoparticles: synthesis, characterization, and in vitro study

Aim: To prepare, physicochemically characterize and determine the anticancer effects of palladium-doped magnesia (Pd/MgO) nanoparticles. Materials & methods: Pd/MgO nanoparticles were prepared by the co-precipitation method from the aqueous solution of Mg(NO₃)₂.6H₂O using K₂CO₃ and the impregnation of MgO into palladium acetylacetonate. Results: Pd/MgO nanoparticles were between 47 and 70 nm in size, cuboid in shape, and tended to form aggregates. Nanoparticles were more antiproliferative toward cancer than the normal cells. In cancer cells, Pd/MgO nanoparticles induced apoptosis by increasing caspase activities and stimulating cytochrome C release. The anticancer effects of Pd/MgO nanoparticles were accentuated by the upregulation of Bax and p53 and downregulation of Bcl-2 protein expressions. Conclusion: Pd/MgO nanoparticles have potential to be developed as an anticancer compound.
