Abstract
Sphingolipids represent a class of structural related lipids involved in membrane biology and various cellular processes including cell growth, apoptosis, inflammation and migration. Over the past decade, sphingolipids have become the focus of intensive studies regarding their involvement in infectious diseases. Pathogens can manipulate the sphingolipid metabolism resulting in cell membrane reorganization and receptor recruitment to facilitate their entry. They may recruit specific host sphingolipid metabolites to establish a favorable niche for intracellular survival and proliferation. In contrast, some sphingolipid metabolites can also act as a first line defense against bacteria based on their antimicrobial activity. In this review, we will focus on the strategies employed by pathogenic Neisseria spp. to modulate the sphingolipid metabolism and hijack the sphingolipid balance in the host to promote cellular colonization, invasion and intracellular survival. Novel techniques and innovative approaches will be highlighted that allow imaging of sphingolipid derivatives in the host cell as well as in the pathogen.

Abstract
Despite the formation of biofilms on catheters for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), some patients do not show bacteremia. To elucidate the specific linkage between biofilms and bacteremia in patients with ECMO, an improved understanding of the microbial community within catheter biofilms is necessary. Hence, we aimed to evaluate the biofilm microbiome of ECMO catheters from adults with (n = 6) and without (n = 15) bacteremia. The microbiomes of the catheter biofilms were evaluated by profiling the V3 and V4 regions of bacterial 16s rRNA genes using the Illumina MiSeq sequencing platform. In total, 2,548,172 reads, with an average of 121,341 reads per sample, were generated. Although alpha diversity was slightly higher in the non-bacteremic group, the difference was not statistically significant. In addition, there was no difference in beta diversity between the two groups. We found 367 different genera, of which 8 were present in all samples regardless of group; Limnohabitans, Flavobacterium, Delftia, Massilia, Bacillus, Candidatus, Xiphinematobacter, and CL0-1 showed an abundance of more than 1% in the sample. In particular, Arthrobacter, SMB53, Neisseria, Ortrobactrum, Candidatus Rhabdochlamydia, Deefgae, Dyella, Paracoccus, and Pedobacter were highly abundant in the bacteremic group. Network analysis indicated that the microbiome of the bacteremic group was more complex than that of the non-bacteremic group. Flavobacterium and CL0.1, which were abundant in the bacteremic group, were considered important genera because they connected different subnetworks. Biofilm characteristics in ECMO catheters varied according to the presence or absence of bacteremia. There were no significant differences in diversity between the two groups, but there were significant differences in the community composition of the biofilms. The biofilm-associated community was dynamic, with the bacteremic group showing very complex network connections within the microbiome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High hydrostatic pressure (HHP) treatment can eliminate cholesteatoma cells from explanted human ossicles prior to re-insertion. We analyzed the effects of HHP treatment on the microbial flora on ossicles and on the planktonic and biofilm states of selected isolates. METHODOLOGY Twenty-six ossicles were explanted from cholesteatoma patients. Five ossicles were directly analyzed for microbial growth without further treatment. Fifteen ossicles were cut into two pieces. One piece was exposed to HHP of 350 MPa for 10 minutes. Both the treated and untreated (control) pieces were then assessed semi-quantitatively. Three ossicles were cut into two pieces and exposed to identical pressure conditions with or without the addition of one of two different combinations of antibiotics to the medium. Differential effects of 10-minute in vitro exposure of planktonic and biofilm bacteria to pressures of 100 MPa, 250 MPa, 400 MPa and 540 MPa in isotonic and hypotonic media were analyzed using two patient isolates of Staphylococcus epidermidis and Neisseria subflava. Bacterial cell inactivation and biofilm destruction were assessed by colony counting and electron microscopy. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS A variety of microorganisms were isolated from the ossicles. Irrespective of the medium, HHP treatment at 350 MPa for 10 minutes led to satisfying but incomplete inactivation especially of gram-negative bacteria. The addition of antibiotics increased the efficacy of elimination. A comparison of HHP treatment of planktonic and biofilm cells showed that the effects of HPP were reduced by about one decadic logarithmic unit when HPP was applied to biofilms. High hydrostatic pressure conditions that are suitable to inactivate cholesteatoma cells fail to completely sterilize ossicles even if antibiotics are added. As a result of the reduced microbial load and the viability loss of surviving bacteria, however, there is a lower risk of re-infection after re-insertion.

Abstract
The importance of physical forces in biology is becoming more appreciated. Neisseria gonorrhoeaehas become a paradigm for the study of physical forces in the bacterial world. Cycles of elongations and retractions of Type IV pili enables N. gonorrhoeaebacteria to exert forces on its environment, forces that play major roles in the life cycle of this pathogen. In order to better understand the role of these forces, there is a need to fully characterize them. Here, we present two different techniques, optical tweezers and Polyacrylamide MicroPillars (PoMPs), for measuring pilus retraction forces. Initially designed for N. gonorrhoeae, these assays can be readily modified to study other pilus-bearing bacteria including Neisseria meningitidis.

Abstract
The pathogenic Neisseria sp. encode a family of phase-variable and antigenically distinct Opa proteins that allow bacterial attachment to virtually every cell type encountered during infection. Some Opa variants bind cell surface-expressed heparan sulfate proteoglycans, including members of the syndecan family of receptors, and extracellular matrix proteins such as fibronectin and vitronectin. Other variants bind members of the carcinoembryonic antigen family of cellular adhesion molecules. Depending on the Opa variant(s) expressed, these receptor interactions can allow neisserial entry and transcellular transcytosis across polarized epithelial cell monolayers, entry into endothelial cells, suppression of lymphocyte function and/or bacterial engulfment and killing by neutrophils. Recent advances in our understanding of how these Opa protein-mediated interactions influence the host cellular response are discussed in the context of their impact on various stages of neisserial infection.

Abstract
Neisseria is a highly adapted human specific pathogen that initiates infection at the mucosal epithelia by using multiple adhesins to interact with host cell receptors. Colonization begins at the apical cell surface with a multi-step adhesion cascade, followed by invasion and persistence within the cell and finally transcytosis at the basolateral surface. The type IV pill are implicated in mediating the initial attachment of both meningococci and gonococci, and this association has been shown to involve contact with the cellular receptor CD46. In this review we describe the initial events in the adhesion, invasion and signaling of pathogenic Neisseria focusing on the initial attachment and signaling induced by the interaction of the type IV pili with CD46.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy of teacher tablets in the treatment of pharyngitis. METHOD One hundred and thirty six patients with acute pharyngitis or chronic pharyngitis in attack were randamly divided into two groups: treated group (n=68), the patients were given teacher tablets for 7 days, control group (n=68), the patients were given Qinlian capsule for 7 days. Before and after the experimental medicine-taking test, general condition, clinical symptoms and features of examinations on laryngo-pharynx, throat swab bacterial culture were measured. RESULT After 7 day medicine-taking experiment, teacher tablets can improve clinical symptoms (at an efficacy rate of more than 60%) and features (at an efficacy rate of more than 80%) of laryngopharynx, in treated group, the inhibition ratios of alpha streptococcus, neisseria and staphylococcus aureus are more than 50%. There are no significant difference between treated group and control groups in those detected index. CONCLUSION Teacher tablets is effective for pharyagitis.

Abstract
Apart from potential roles in anti-tumor surveillance, the TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) has important regulatory functions in the host immune response. We studied antiinflammatory effects of endogenous and recombinant TRAIL (rTRAIL) in experimental meningitis. Following intrathecal application of pneumococcal cell wall, a TLR2 ligand, we found prolonged inflammation, augmented clinical impairment, and increased apoptosis in the hippocampus of TRAIL(-/-) mice. Administration of rTRAIL into the subarachnoid space of TRAIL(-/-) mice or reconstitution of hematopoiesis with wild-type bone marrow cells reversed these effects, suggesting an autoregulatory role of TRAIL within the infiltrating leukocyte population. Importantly, intrathecal application of rTRAIL in wild-type mice with meningitis also decreased inflammation and apoptosis. Moreover, patients suffering from bacterial meningitis showed increased intrathecal synthesis of TRAIL. Our findings provide what we believe is the first evidence that TRAIL may act as a negative regulator of acute CNS inflammation. The ability of TRAIL to modify inflammatory responses and to reduce neuronal cell death in meningitis suggests that it may be used as a novel antiinflammatory agent in invasive infections.

Abstract
Most Neisseria species are gram-negative cocci or diplococci; currently, N. elongata is the only species of human origin with a bacillary morphology. Here, we report isolation and characterization of eight strains of another bacillary Neisseria species from human infections. The organisms caused or contributed to either oral cavity-related or respiratory tract infections, and two strains were isolated from blood cultures. The 16S rRNA gene sequences of these organisms, being homogenous or nearly so (99.4 to 100% identity), matched at <96% known Neisseria species and formed a distinct group within the genus. Analysis of the cellular fatty acids showed broad similarity with a few Neisseria species. The organisms were gram negative and measured 0.6 mum by 1.3 to 3.0 mum. They grew well on chocolate agar and on sheep blood agar but did not grow on modified Thayer-Martin agar. They were positive for oxidase and negative for indole production. There was no acid production from dextrose, lactose, maltose, or sucrose. The tests for catalase reaction, nitrate reduction, and tributilin varied with the strains. These results suggest that these organisms represent a novel species within the genus Neisseria, for which the name Neisseria bacilliformis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is MDA2833 = ATCC BAA-1200(T) = CCUG50858(T). Distinction between N. bacilliformis and N. elongata can be made confidently by 16S rRNA gene sequencing or cellular fatty acid profiling but may be difficult by morphology or routine biochemical tests.

Abstract
Background Horizontal gene transfer is an important source of genetic variation among Neisseria species and has contributed to the spread of resistance to penicillin and sulfonamide drugs in the pathogen Neisseria meningitidis. Sulfonamide resistance in Neisseria meningitidis is mediated by altered chromosomal folP genes. At least some folP alleles conferring resistance have been horizontally acquired from other species, presumably from commensal Neisseriae. In this work, the DNA sequence surrounding folP in commensal Neisseria species was determined and compared to corresponding regions in pathogenic Neisseriae, in order to elucidate the potential for inter-species DNA transfer within this region. Results The upstream region of folP displayed differences in gene order between species, including an insertion of a complete Correia element in Neisseria lactamica and an inversion of a larger genomic segment in Neisseria sicca, Neisseria subflava and Neisseria mucosa. The latter species also had DNA uptake signal sequences (DUS) in this region that were one base different from the DUS in pathogenic Neisseriae. Another interesting finding was evidence of a horizontal transfer event from Neisseria lactamica or Neisseria cinerea that introduced a novel folP allele to the meningococcal population. Conclusion Genetic recombination events immediately upstream of folP and horizontal transfer have resulted in sequence differences in the folP region between the Neisseria species. This variability could be a consequence of the selective pressure on this region exerted by the use of sulfonamide drugs.

Abstract
Polystyrene petri dishes containing liquid medium were inoculated with single-cell suspensions of a fresh clinical isolate of Neisseria subflava and were incubated under conditions of low vibration. N. subflava colonies grew firmly attached to the surface of the dish, while the broth remained clear. Growing colonies released cells into the medium, resulting in the appearance of 10(2) to 10(4) small satellite colonies attached to the surface of the dish in an area adjacent to each mature colony after 24 h. Satellite colonies grew in patterns of streamers shaped like jets and flares emanating from mature colonies and pointing toward the center of the dish. This dispersal pattern evidently resulted from the surface translocation of detached biofilm cells by buoyancy-driven convection currents that were generated due to slight temperature gradients in the medium. Streamers of satellite colonies ranged from 2 to >40 mm in length. Satellite colonies in very long streamers were relatively uniform in size regardless of their distance from the mature colony, suggesting that mature colonies released single cells or small clusters of cells into the medium and that the detachment, surface translocation, and subsequent surface reattachment of released cells were a transitory process. Incubation of N. subflava single cells in a perfused biofilm fermentor resulted in a large spike of the number of CFU in the perfusate after 9.5 h of growth, consistent with a rapid release of cells into the medium. Biofilm colonies of several other phylogenetically diverse oral bacteria, including Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Haemophilus aphrophilus, Streptococcus mitis, and a prevalent but previously uncultured oral Streptococcus sp., exhibited similar temperature-dependent dispersal patterns in broth culture. This in vitro spreading phenotype could be a useful tool for studying biofilm dispersal in these and other nonflagellated bacteria and may have physiological relevance to biofilm dispersal in the oral cavity.

Abstract
A chemostat mixed culture system was used to produce two distinct ecological states, state-1 (caries-like microcosm) and state-2 (periodontal-like microcosm). Eleven bacterial species (Streptococcus gordonii, Strep. mitis I, Strep. mutans, Strep. oralis, Actinomyces naeslundii, Lactobacillus casei, Neisseria subflava, Fusobacterium nucleatum, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella nigrescens, Veillonella dispar) were used to inoculate the planktonic system. A flow cell, designed to produce convergent flow with increasing shear stress, was attached to the chemostat system, and the resultant biofilms developed from the state-1 and state-2 microcosms along the shear stress gradient were examined and compared using image analysis and viable counts. The biofilm produced from state-1 showed a lower shear stress tolerance (0.146 Pa) than the state-2 biofilm (0.236 Pa). The biofilm compositions did not vary along the gradient of shear stress and were dependent on the initial inoculum conditions. Gram-positive species were predominant in the state-1 biofilm, while Gram-negative species were predominant in state-2.

Abstract
The pathogenic Neisseria species constitute a multi-faceted infection model of a highly adapted pathogen-host relationship. Several bacterial and host-cell factors involved in the cellular cross-talk have been recently unraveled. Using Neisseria gonorrhoeae as a prototype, several structurally variable surface proteins, including pili and Opa proteins, have been revealed as adhesins recognizing distinct host-cell receptors. The Opa proteins, in particular, are important in facilitating interaction with heparan sulfate proteoglycan receptors and members of the CD66 and integrin receptor families. These interactions not only enable the pathogens' anchoring, and penetration into, the human mucosa but also stimulate cellular signaling cascades involving the phosphatidylcholine-dependent phospholipase C, acidic sphingomyelinase and protein kinase C in epithelial cells, and Src-related kinases, Rac1, p21-activated kinase and Jun N-terminal kinase in phagocytic cells. Activation of these pathways is essential for the entry and intracellular accommodation of the pathogens but also leads to an early induction of cytokine release, thus priming the immune response. It is believed that detailed knowledge of cellular signaling cascades activated by infection will aid us in applying known and novel interfering drugs, in addition to classical antibiotic therapy, to the therapeutic and prophylactic treatment of persistent or otherwise difficult-to-treat bacterial infections.

Abstract
Resting B cells stimulated with dextran-conjugated anti-immunoglobulin D (anti-IgD) antibodies (anti-Ig-dex), a model for B-cell activation in response to polysaccharide antigens, proliferate but secrete little if any Ig, unless additional stimuli are present. In order to elucidate the parameters which costimulate T-cell-independent antipolysaccharide antibody responses during bacterial infections, we tested the capacities of highly purified porin proteins from Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae to augment in vitro proliferation and induce Ig secretion by anti-Ig-dex-activated B cells. Resting B cells, from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-nonresponsive C3H/HeJ mice, proliferated and secreted IgM in response to each of three distinct porins acting alone. Further, porins, even at concentrations that were minimally inductive when acting alone, were strongly synergistic with anti-Ig-dex for proliferation and Ig secretion. Similar synergistic effects of porins with CD40-ligand were also observed. These effects of porins were shown to occur directly at the level of the B cell. The predominant Ig isotype elicited in response to porins plus anti-Ig-dex or CD40-ligand was IgM (>97%), with the remainder comprising IgG. Surprisingly, picogram-per-milliliter amounts of neisserial LPS were also found to be highly synergistic with anti-Ig-dex for induction of IgM secretion by LPS-responsive C3H/HeN, but not C3H/HeJ, B cells. Thus, these data suggest that porins, as well as LPS, may provide critical second signals for T-cell-independent induction of polysaccharide-specific Ig in response to neisserial and other gram-negative porin-expressing bacterial pathogens, without a requirement for the participation of non-B cell types. These data may also help to explain the potent immunopotentiating effects of porins for polysaccharide-specific, as well as protein-specific, humoral responses in vivo.

Abstract
The sequences of the adenylate kinase gene (adk) and the RecA gene (recA) were determined from the same isolates of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, N. meningitidis, N. lactamica, N. polysaccharea, N. cinerea, N. mucosa, N. pharyngis var. flava, N. flavescens, and N. animalis. The patterns of sequence divergence observed at adk and recA were very different. Dendrograms constructed from the recA data using two different algorithms were statistically robust and were congruent with each other and with the relationships between the species previously proposed using other data. In contrast, the dendrograms derived from the adk data were noncogruent with each other, and with those from the recA data, and were statistically poorly supported. These results, along with the uniform distribution of pairwise sequence divergences between the species at adk, suggest there has been a history of interspecies recombination within the adk gene of the human Neisseria species which has obscured the phylogenetic relationships between the species. This view was supported by Sawyer's runs test, and the Index of Association (IA) between codons, which provided significant evidence for interspecies recombination between the adk genes from the human Neisseria species, but no evidence of interspecies recombination between the recA sequences.

Abstract
A new species of the genus Neisseria is proposed, Neisseria dentiae sp. nov. The organism is found in dental plaque of domestic cows. It resembles N. animalis, N. canis and N. iguanae phenotypically but is distinguished from the first two by being positive for acidification of gluconate, D-glucose and usually D-fructose, and from the third by lack of predominant tetrad arrangement, lack of distinct alpha-haemolysis and by growing on nutrient agar and usually acidifying D-fructose. It is suggested that it may have significance for dental microbiology because members of the genus rapidly utilize oxygen and this may contribute to the anaerobic microenvironment found in dental plaque.

The attempt to determine interrelations between the skin sensitivity to phytohemagglutinin and some immunity indexes and to explain several links of lectins' action mechanisms during allergic processes have been made.

Abstract
For the first time an anti-histone activity of bacteria has been revealed and a method of its determination has been suggested. Bacteria used in the study and isolated from anterior section of nasal mucosa of the children have been identified on a species level and characterized in terms of their antihistone activity. With employment of light microscopic technique different stages of interaction between bacteria and nuclei of epitheliocytes of anterior section of nasal mucous membrane of children under school age were studied. A biological significance of antihistone activity of bacteria as well as a possibility of its use in biotechnology, Medicine, Ecology is discussed.

Abstract
A chemostat system has been developed to model the attachment of oral bacteria, and the subsequent development of plaque film, to acrylic surfaces immersed in steady state cultures. Plaque was removed from the teeth and gingival margin of volunteers who refrained from oral hygiene for at least 72 h. Samples were pooled and inoculated into a complex growth medium maintained at 37 degrees C. Glucose-limited continuous culture was established at a dilution rate of 0.05/h and at pH 7.0. Microbiological analysis of the culture indicated that a complex community of oral bacteria was established, typical of that found in dental plaque. Acrylic tiles were immersed in the fermenter through a modified fermenter head and incubated therein for up to 21 d. Scanning electron microscopy showed that either side of the tiles contained a rough and a smooth surface and these initially favoured the attachment of fusiform bacteria, particularly on the rough surface. Cocci attached to those surfaces which were not heavily colonized by the fusiforms and eventually grew into and on the colonial sheets of the fusiforms.

Abstract
Nasal secretions of volunteers colonized by N. lactamica impaired the attachment of N. lactamica and of meningococci of groups A and B to oroepithelial cells. Bacterial adherence was found to be mediated by nonpiliated adhesins with antigen(s) which probably are shared by the strains tested. Although a strong attachment-inhibiting activity arises in their nasal secretions, volunteers remained colonized by N. lactamica. This evidence suggest that the eradication of Neisseria carriage is a multifactorial event.

Abstract
The adhesion to fibrin-platelet clots in vitro of 21 strains of streptococci isolated from the blood of patients with sub-acute bacterial endocarditis (SABE) was measured. The species, in order of greatest adhesion, were Streptococcus faecalis, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus milleri, Streptococcus sanguis, dextran-positive Streptococcus mitior, dextran-negative Streptococcus mitior and Streptococcus salivarius. Individual strains within species, however, cannot be assumed to be representative of their species and may exhibit unusually high or low adhesion. Adhesion depended upon both bacterial concentration and period of contact. There was no simple relationship between ability to adhere and liability to cause endocarditis. Formation of dextran did not increase adhesion. The streptococci were more adhesive than strains of Escherichia coli and Neisseria sicca and less adhesive than strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.

Abstract
Prompt diagnosis and effective treatment of urogenital gonococcal infections require rapid isolation and identification of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from urogenital specimens. We evaluated a new, rapid (30-min) test called Gonochek II (E-Y Laboratories, San Mateo, Calif.) which utilizes chromogenic substrates for the identification of pathogenic Neisseria species. It was compared with the API NeIdent (Analytab Products, Inc., Plainview, N.Y.), Minitek (BBL Microbiology Systems, Cockeysville, Md.), and RapID NH (Innovative Diagnostics, Atlanta, Ga.), systems and the Phadebact GC (Pharmacia Diagnostics, Piscataway, N.J.) test for its performance in identifying known strains of N. gonorrhoeae (39 strains), Neisseria meningitidis (22 strains), Neisseria lactamica (12 strains), and Branhamella catarrhalis (17 strains). The Gonochek II system correctly identified 100% of N. gonorrhoeae, N. lactamica, and B. catarrhalis strains and 95.4% of N. meningitidis strains. The percent agreement for correct identification of all strains tested was 98.8%. In contrast, the Minitek, RapID NH, and API NeIdent systems correctly identified 86.6, 80.0, and 73.3% of the strains, respectively. The Phadebact GC test identified 94.9% of the N. gonorrhoeae isolates but also cross-reacted with 41.6% of the N. lactamica strains. The Gonochek II system is rapid, simple to perform, and easy to interpret, requires 1 to 2 min to set up, and more accurately identifies pathogenic Neisseria species when compared with other systems used in this study.

Abstract
The recent observation that Branhamella catarrhalis may cause a variety of infections in humans has stimulated interest in human host defenses against this organism. We encountered 21 patients with B. catarrhalis infection: seven with pneumonia, 13 with a purulent exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, and one with purulent sinusitis. Normal human serum (NHS) demonstrated no bactericidal activity against 20 of the 21 isolates. In contrast, 7 of 19 acute and 18 of 20 convalescent sera demonstrated significant bactericidal effects against the corresponding B. catarrhalis isolate. Heating convalescent sera to 56 C for 30 min abolished bactericidal activity. This activity was restored by NHS but not by complement-rich guinea pig serum. Selective blockage of the classic complement pathway eliminated bactericidal activity, whereas selective blockage of the alternative pathway did not. IgG isolated from convalescent serum plus NHS was bactericidal for the corresponding B. catarrhalis isolate. These results suggest that most patients with pulmonary infections due to B. catarrhalis develop a convalescent IgG antibody response that mediates serum bactericidal activity by the classic complement pathway.

Abstract
An asaccharolytic, gram-negative, oxidase-positive diplococcus was isolated on Martin-Lewis medium from the cervix of a patient attending an arthritis clinic at Seattle Public Health Hospital, Seattle, Wash. This strain, NRL 32165, did not produce detectable acid from glucose, maltose, sucrose, fructose, mannitol, or lactose in either cystine Trypticase agar (BBL Microbiology Systems, Cockeysville, Md.) or modified oxidation-fermentation medium and was identified presumptively as a glucose-negative Neisseria gonorrhoeae strain, but was identified later as Neisseria cinerea on the basis of its biochemical reactions. Nitrate was not reduced, nitrite (0.001%, wt/vol) was reduced, and polysaccharide was not produced from sucrose. Proline, arginine, and cystine-cysteine were required for growth on defined medium. Strain NRL 32165 did not react with antigonococcal protein I monoclonal antibodies and did not produce immunoglobulin A protease. In DNA:DNA homology studies with N. gonorrhoeae NRL 8038 (F62) and N. cinerea type strain NRL 30003, strain NRL 32165 showed 95% homology relative to N. cinerea and 44% homology relative to N. gonorrhoeae. Thus, the identity of strain NRL 32165 was confirmed as N. cinerea (von Lingelsheim 1906) Murray 1939. Of all Neisseria spp., N. cinerea is most likely to be misidentified as a glucose-negative N. gonorrhoeae strain.

Abstract
The ability of human oral bacteria to inhibit Streptococcus mutans was studied under a variety of in vitro conditions using an agar overlay assay. Extensive inherent variability in microbial antagonism by certain organisms was demonstrated. Antagonistic activity was also significantly influenced by changes in the assay conditions.

Abstract
Eleven clinically significant isolates of Branhamella catarrhalis grew well on modified Thayer-Martin medium and produced beta-lactamase, but did not grow on nutrient agar at 22 degrees C. Minimum inhibitory concentrations of vancomycin, colistin, and trimethoprim were found to be higher than the concentrations of these antibiotics in modified Thayer-Martin medium. The criteria necessary for laboratory identification of B. catarrhalis are discussed.

Abstract
Certain gonococci, which heretofore have lacked a conjugal mating system, can sexually transfer a small plasmid (4.5 x 10)6) daltons) which carries the gene for beta-lactamase production. Frequencies of conjugal transfer were similar into diverse recipients (other gonococci, Neisseria flava, and Escherichia coli), which suggests that gonococci may transfer the plasmid promiscuously in nature.

Abstract
Almost 1000 strains representing well above 50 different species or groups of gram-negative bacteria were examined for twitching motility. This kind of motility was mainly found in strictly aerobic cocci and rods (viz. Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Moraxella spp., Neisseria gonorrhoeae, N. meningitidis, Pseudomonas spp., phenon 3 of Thornley that is closely related to Acinetobacter, and marine, yellow-pigmented rods), but also in the facultative Eikenella corrodens and in anaerobic strains presumptively identified as "Bacteroides corrodens" earlier. Strains of species known to possess polar fimbriae were shown to exhibit twitching motility. None of the strains of species known to possess peritrichously arranged fimbriae exhibited twitching motility.
