Electromagnetic Field Exposure Changes Due to the Digital Television Switchover in Thessaloniki, Greece

In the present work, the changes in the exposure to electromagnetic fields due to television signals incurred by the digital switchover in Thessaloniki, Greece, are investigated. It is shown that the measured electric fields comply with ICNIRP guidelines but are higher than those in the reported literature for other countries. However, this may be attributed to the selection of measurement points. Moreover, it is shown that the median value of the power density dropped from 60 μW m during analog broadcasting to 13.3 μW m for digital television. This finding indicates that the digital switchover has resulted in reduced exposure for the population to radiofrequency fields in the UHF range.

Global responses for recycling waste CRTs in e-waste

The management of used cathode ray tube (CRT) devices is a major problem worldwide due to rapid uptake of the technology and early obsolescence of CRT devices, which is considered an environment hazard if disposed improperly. Previously, their production has grown in step with computer and television demand but later on with rapid technological innovation; TVs and computer screens has been replaced by new products such as Liquid Crystal Displays (LCDs) and Plasma Display Panel (PDPs). This change creates a large volume of waste stream of obsolete CRTs waste in developed countries and developing countries will be becoming major CRTs waste producers in the upcoming years. We studied that there is also high level of trans-boundary movement of these devices as second-hand electronic equipment into developing countries in an attempt to bridge the 'digital divide'. Moreover, the current global production of e-waste is estimated to be '41million tonnes per year' where a major part of the e-waste stream consists of CRT devices. This review article provides a concise overview of world's current CRTs waste scenario, namely magnitude of the demand and processing, current disposal and recycling operations.

Measuring treatment costs of typical waste electrical and electronic equipment: A pre-research for Chinese policy making

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) volume is increasing, worldwide. In 2011, the Chinese government issued new regulations on WEEE recycling and disposal, establishing a WEEE treatment subsidy funded by a levy on producers of electrical and electronic equipment. In order to evaluate WEEE recycling treatment costs and revenue possibilities under the new regulations, and to propose suggestions for cost-effective WEEE management, a comprehensive revenue-expenditure model (REM), were established for this study, including 7 types of costs, 4 types of fees, and one type of revenue. Since TV sets dominated the volume of WEEE treated from 2013 to 2014, with a contribution rate of 87.3%, TV sets were taken as a representative case. Results showed that the treatment cost varied from 46.4RMB/unit to 82.5RMB/unit, with a treatment quantity of 130,000 units to 1,200,000 units per year in China. Collection cost accounted for the largest portion (about 70.0%), while taxes and fees (about 11.0 %) and labor cost (about 7.0 %) contributed less. The average costs for disposal, sales, and taxes had no influence on treatment quantity (TQ). TQ might have an adverse effect on average labor and management costs; while average collection and purchase fees, and financing costs, would vary with purchase price, and the average sales fees and taxes would vary with the sales of dismantled materials and other recycled products. Recycling enterprises could reduce their costs by setting up online and offline collection platforms, cooperating with individual collectors, creating door-to-door collection channels, improving production efficiency and reducing administrative expenditures. The government could provide economic incentives-such as subsidies, low-cost loans, tax cuts and credits-and could also raise public awareness of waste management and environmental protection, in order to capture some of the WEEE currently discarded into the general waste stream. Foreign companies with advanced WEEE utilization technology could invest or participate in this area, producing profits for themselves while helping to develop and implement environmentally friendly and energy-saving technologies applicable to the Chinese market.

High-quality collection and disposal of WEEE: Environmental impacts and resultant issues

Life cycle assessment of the collection, transport and recycling of various types of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) in Norway shows that small amounts of critical materials (refrigerants, precious/trace metals) are vital for the overall environmental accounts of the value chains. High-quality recycling ensures that materials and energy are effectively recovered from WEEE. This recovery means that responsible waste handling confers net environmental benefits in terms of global warming potential (GWP), for all types of WEEE analysed. For refrigeration equipment, the potential reduction of GWP by high-quality recycling is so large as to be of national significance. For all waste types, the magnitude of the net benefit from recovering materials and energy exceeds the negative consequences of irresponsible disposal. One outcome of this may be widespread misunderstanding of the need for recycling. Furthermore, framing public communication on recycling in terms of avoiding negative consequences, as is essentially universal, may not convey an appropriate message. The issue is particularly important where the consumer regards products as relatively disposable and environmentally benign, and/or where the "null option" of retaining the product at end-of-life is especially prevalent. The paper highlights the implications of all these issues for policy-makers, waste collectors and recyclers, and consumers.

Out with the old, out with the new--The effect of transitions in TVs and monitors technology on consumption and WEEE generation in Sweden 1996-2014

The recycling of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is important due to its content of valuable and hazardous compounds. This study investigates the case of the recent technology change within television sets (TVs) and monitors, its impact on the generation of WEEE, and the implications for the recycling industry. In particular, material flow analysis for the time series of 1996-2014 for TVs and monitors by type of technology (CRT, Plasma and LCD) in physical units is combined with empirical data on product lifespans. The number of consumed TVs and monitors has grown exponentially. As a result, despite a 3-fold reduction in the weight of the products, the weight of the corresponding WEEE is also growing exponentially. Out with the old, out with the new - a peak in WEEE from both CRT and flat-screen displays is expected during 2014-2020, due to the simultaneous obsolesce of the last wave of CRT products and the short-lived flat-screen products that substituted the CRTs. The lifespans of LCD and LED TVs were found to be three times shorter than of the CRT TVs, with many TVs discarded while still functional. This is the consequence of two events - replacement of the CRT TVs in combination with lifestyle purchases of TVs, i.e. the premature replacement of flat-screen displays with new sets with extra-large screens and/or new features. The throughput of TVs and monitors consumed has been estimated annually from 2014 until 2040, by quantity and type of device, as well as by component and material type. The annual economic value of the corresponding secondary materials, by material type, has also been estimated. The point in time when the final disposal of CRT products is likely to take place has been identified and should be noted by the recycling industry. Among the important contributions of this study to the accounting and predicting of amounts and types of WEEE are the lifespan distributions, size and weight distributions, and material composition for TVs and monitors of different technology. Directions for method application in other countries are given.

Reduction-melting combined with a Na₂CO₃ flux recycling process for lead recovery from cathode ray tube funnel glass

With large quantity of flux (Na2CO3), lead can be recovered from the funnel glass of waste cathode-ray tubes via reduction-melting at 1000°C. To reduce flux cost, a technique to recover added flux from the generated oxide phase is also important in order to recycle the flux recovered from the reduction-melting process. In this study, the phase separation of sodium and the crystallization of water-soluble sodium silicates were induced after the reduction-melting process to enhance the leachability of sodium in the oxide phase and to extract the sodium from the phase for the recovery of Na2CO3 as flux. A reductive atmosphere promoted the phase separation and crystallization, and the leachability of sodium from the oxide phase was enhanced. The optimum temperature and treatment time for increasing the leachability were 700°C and 2h, respectively. After treatment, more than 90% of the sodium in the oxide phase was extracted in water. NaHCO3 can be recovered by carbonization of the solution containing sodium ions using carbon dioxide gas, decomposed to Na2CO3 at 50°C and recycled for use in the reduction-melting process.

User experience while viewing stereoscopic 3D television

3D display technologies have been linked to visual discomfort and fatigue. In a lab-based study with a between-subjects design, 433 viewers aged from 4 to 82 years watched the same movie in either 2D or stereo 3D (S3D), and subjectively reported on a range of aspects of their viewing experience. Our results suggest that a minority of viewers, around 14%, experience adverse effects due to viewing S3D, mainly headache and eyestrain. A control experiment where participants viewed 2D content through 3D glasses suggests that around 8% may report adverse effects which are not due directly to viewing S3D, but instead are due to the glasses or to negative preconceptions about S3D (the 'nocebo effect'). Women were slightly more likely than men to report adverse effects with S3D. We could not detect any link between pre-existing eye conditions or low stereoacuity and the likelihood of experiencing adverse effects with S3D.

Multiwavefront digital holographic television

This paper presents the full technology chain supporting wide angle digital holographic television from holographic capture of real world objects/scenes to holographic display with an extended viewing angle. The data are captured with multiple CCD cameras located around an object. The display system is based on multiple tilted spatial light modulators (SLMs) arranged in a circular configuration. The capture-display system is linked by a holographic data processing module, which allows for significant decoupling of the capture and display systems. The presented experimental results, based on the reconstruction of real world, variable in time scenes, illustrates imaging dynamics, viewing angle and quality.

Remote gaze tracking system on a large display

We propose a new remote gaze tracking system as an intelligent TV interface. Our research is novel in the following three ways: first, because a user can sit at various positions in front of a large display, the capture volume of the gaze tracking system should be greater, so the proposed system includes two cameras which can be moved simultaneously by panning and tilting mechanisms, a wide view camera (WVC) for detecting eye position and an auto-focusing narrow view camera (NVC) for capturing enlarged eye images. Second, in order to remove the complicated calibration between the WVC and NVC and to enhance the capture speed of the NVC, these two cameras are combined in a parallel structure. Third, the auto-focusing of the NVC is achieved on the basis of both the user's facial width in the WVC image and a focus score calculated on the eye image of the NVC. Experimental results showed that the proposed system can be operated with a gaze tracking accuracy of ±0.737°∼±0.775° and a speed of 5∼10 frames/s.

Energy-efficient modification of reduction-melting for lead recovery from cathode ray tube funnel glass

Lead can be recovered from funnel glass of waste cathode ray tubes via reduction melting. While low-temperature melting is necessary for reduced energy consumption, previously proposed methods required high melting temperatures (1400 °C) for the reduction melting. In this study, the reduction melting of the funnel glass was performed at 900-1000 °C using a lab-scale reactor with varying concentrations of Na(2)CO(3) at different melting temperatures and melting times. The optimum Na(2)CO(3) dosage and melting temperature for efficient lead recovery was 0.5 g per 1g of the funnel glass and 1000 °C respectively. By the reduction melting with the mentioned conditions, 92% of the lead in the funnel glass was recovered in 60 min. However, further lead recovery was difficult because the rate of the lead recovery decreased as with the recovery of increasing quantity of the lead from the glass. Thus, the lead remaining in the glass after the reduction melting was extracted with 1M HCl, and the lead recovery improved to 98%.

Daily assistance for individuals with dementia via videophone

We previously developed remote reminiscence conversation and schedule prompter systems via the videophone to improve psychological stability and to assist individuals with dementia to perform household tasks. Our results showed that the psychological stability of 1 patient persisted for 3 hours after remote conversations. The task completion rate afforded by the schedule prompter system, which displays a video reminder series automatically, was 52%. In the present study, we also investigated whether psychological stability was sustained in other patients. Furthermore, motivational prompter videos were added to enhance the original schedule prompter system. We found that 1 in 4 patients living at home showed greater stability while conversing with a conversation partner on the videophone than while watching television programs, and that she remained stable for 3 hours after remote conversations. The task completion rate afforded by the revised schedule prompter system was 82%. These 2 remote systems are promising tools for assisting individuals with dementia in their daily lives.

Time bomb or hidden treasure? Characteristics of junk TVs and of the US households who store them

Within the growing stockpile of electronic waste (e-waste), TVs are especially of concern in the US because of their number (which is known imprecisely), their low recycling rate, and their material content: cathode ray tube televisions contain lead, and both rear projection and flat panel displays contain mercury, in addition to other potentially toxic materials. Based on a unique dataset from a 2010 survey, our count models show that pro-environmental behavior, age, education, household size, marital status, gender of the head of household, dwelling type, and geographic location are statistically significant variables for explaining the number of broken or obsolete (junk) TVs stored by US households. We also estimate that they are storing approximately 84.1 million junk TVs, which represents 40 pounds of scrap per household. Materials in each of these junk TVs are worth $21 on average at January 2012 materials prices, which sets an upper bound on collecting and recycling costs. This information should be helpful for developing more effective recycling strategies for TVs in the e-waste stream.

Bidirectional phase-modulated hybrid cable television/radio-over-fiber lightwave transport systems

A bidirectional phase-modulated hybrid cable television/radio-over-fiber lightwave transport system employing fiber Bragg grating tilt filter as a phase modulation-to-intensity modulation conversion scheme is proposed and demonstrated. Impressive performances of carrier-to-noise ratio, composite second-order, composite triple-beat, and bit-error rate are obtained in our proposed systems over a combination of 40 km single-mode fiber-and 1.43 km photonic crystal fiber transmission.

Integral three-dimensional television with video system using pixel-offset method

Integral three-dimensional (3D) television based on integral imaging requires huge amounts of information. Previously, we constructed an Integral 3D television using Super Hi-Vision (SHV) technology, with 7680 pixels horizontally and 4320 pixels vertically. We report on improved image quality through the development of video system with an equivalent of 8000 scan lines for use with Integral 3D television. We conducted experiments to evaluate the resolution of 3D images using an experimental setup and were able to show that by using the pixel-offset method we have eliminated aliasing produced by full-resolution SHV video equipment. We confirmed that the application of the pixel-offset method to integral 3D television is effective in increasing the resolution of reconstructed images.

Life cycle assessment of TV sets in China: a case study of the impacts of CRT monitors

Along with the rapid increase in both production and use of TV sets in China, there is an increasing awareness of the environmental impacts related to the accelerating mass production, electricity use, and waste management of these sets. This paper aims to describe the application of life cycle assessment (LCA) to investigate the environmental performance of Chinese TV sets. An assessment of the TV set device (focusing on the Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitor) was carried out using a detailed modular LCA based on the international standards of the ISO 14040 series. The LCA was constructed using SimaPro software version 7.2 and expressed with the Eco-indicator' 99 life cycle impact assessment method. For a sensitivity analysis of the overall LCA results, the CML method was used in order to estimate the influence of the choice of the assessment method on the results. Life cycle inventory information was compiled by Ecoinvent 2.2 databases, combined with literature and field investigations on the current Chinese situation. The established LCA study shows that the use stage of such devices has the highest environmental impact, followed by the manufacturing stage. In the manufacturing stage, the CRT and the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) are those components contributing the most environmental impacts. During the use phase, the environmental impacts are due entirely to the methods of electricity generation used to run them, since no other aspects were taken into account for this phase. The final processing step-the end-of-life stage-can lead to a clear environmental benefit when the TV sets are processed through the formal dismantling enterprises in China.

Preferred viewing distance of liquid crystal high-definition television

This study explored the effect of TV size, illumination, and viewing angle on preferred viewing distance in high-definition liquid crystal display televisions (HDTV). Results showed that the mean preferred viewing distance was 2856 mm. TV size and illumination significantly affected preferred viewing distance. The larger the screen size, the greater the preferred viewing distance, at around 3-4 times the width of the screen (W). The greater the illumination, the greater the preferred viewing distance. Viewing angle also correlated significantly with preferred viewing distance. The more deflected from direct frontal view, the shorter the preferred viewing distance seemed to be.

Fiber optical CATV transport systems based on PM and light injection-locked DFB LD as a duplex transceiver

A bidirectional fiber optical CATV transport system employing phase modulation (PM) scheme and frequency up-conversion technique to deal with downstream CATV signals, and using light injection-locked distributed feedback laser diode (DFB LD) as a duplex transceiver at the receiving site is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. With optimum injection wavelength and power level, a DFB LD is efficiently employed for both the transmitter and receiver operations. Such DFB LD is used to replace the functions of delay interferometer (DI) and CATV receiver, and also to be as the upstream light source. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to successfully utilize a DFB LD to detect the phase-modulated CATV signals. Impressive experimental results prove that our proposed systems not only can employ the PM scheme and the frequency up-conversion technique to optimize the overall performances of systems, but also can use an injection-locked DFB LD to detect the downstream phase-modulated CATV signals as well as to transmit the upstream CATV ones simultaneously.

Direct CATV modulation and phase remodulated radio-over-fiber transport system

A novel transport system, with directly modulating community antenna television (CATV) signal downstream and phase-remodulating radio-over-fiber (ROF) signal upstream, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. By modulating multi-carriers CATV signal in amplitude domain and ROF signal in phase domain, a single optical wavelength is able to serve these two applications simultaneous. To be the first system of communicating CATV signal downstream and phase remodulating radio signal upstream, the performances of transmitting CATV and radio signals over 20 km single-mode fiber (SMF) were experimentally verified. Good performances of carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR), composite second-order (CSO), and composite triple beat (CTB) were obtained for CATV applications as well as high extinction ration (ER) and low bit error rate (BER) values were measured for ROF transmission.

Recycling PC and TV waste glass in clay bricks and roof tiles

Disposal of PC monitors and TV sets is a growing problem, with over 40% of the weight of these systems comprised of waste glasses with high Pb (funnel) or Ba-Sr concentrations (panel), making them unsuitable for recycling and manufacturing new glass. A possible way to re-use these glasses is in the manufacturing of clay bricks and roof tiles. This possibility was appraised by laboratory simulation of the brickmaking process and technological characterization of unfired and fired products. The recycling of both funnel and panel glasses into clay bodies is technologically feasible, resulting in a substantially reduced plasticity behaviour during shaping-drying (implying a reduction of mechanical strength), and a promotion of sintering during firing. No significant release of Pb, Ba, and Sr was observed during the firing and leaching test for the carbonate-poor body; in contrast, some Pb volatilization during firing and Sr leaching were observed for the carbonate-rich body. Additions of 2 wt.% appear to be practicable, while 5 wt.% glass induces unacceptable modifications of technological properties. The recommended amount is within 2 and 4 wt.%, depending on the characteristics of the clay bodies. The main constraint is that the glass must have a particle size below the limit of the pan mills used in brickmaking (<1mm).

Leaching of brominated flame retardants from TV housing plastics in the presence of dissolved humic matter

In this study, we investigated the contents of several brominated compounds in TV molding plastics, as well as their leaching characteristics in the presence of DHM. The PBDE content was about 3% of the sample weight, and deca-BDE was the most abundant homologue, accounting for over 80% of the total amount. TBBPA, PBPs and PBBs content was 8100, 4700 and 250 ng/g, respectively. Despite no detection of most of the lower brominated DEs in distilled water, most homologues could be detected in DHM solution, and their solubility increased according to the contact time; those of highly brominated compounds increased to 10 times their maximum solubility in distilled water. Especially, contrary to the relatively faster equilibrium in distilled water, BFR solubility in DHM solution was maintained even after 20 days. In addition, a modified first-order model adequately reflected rapid desorption for each compound in the initial period, but slow desorption afterwards. From an overall perspective, it is clear that hydrophobic BFRs can leach out to a great extent in the presence of DHM, which is a matter of great concern in E&E waste as the potential contaminant source of BFRs, especially in landfills and open dump sites that provide the perfect conditions for exposure of BFRs to abundant DHM.

Study on legibility of characters for the elderly--effects of character display modes on legibility

It is more crucial than ever to consider the elderly when designing products. One of the important things to remember is the legibility of characters, since this influences the accessibility and usability of products. We studied the effects of character attributes on legibility using 70 subjects (60 aged 46-79 with no apparent ocular problems except presbyopia, and 10 aged 68-80 with cataracts). Thirty 10-key television remote control models were made. The characters on each were different, and were based on combinations of three attributes-height (5 levels), thickness (3 levels), and display mode (2 levels; positive: black characters on a white background, negative: white characters on a black background). Participants subjectively evaluated the legibility of the characters for each 10-key sample under two ambient illuminance conditions: 500 lx and 50 lx. They also performed paired comparisons on samples with the same height and thickness but different display modes. Subjective data were analyzed using a three-way factorial ANOVA for character height, thickness, and display mode. Legibility was significantly affected by all factors for those without cataracts under both illuminance conditions, and the interaction between thickness and display mode was significant. A two-way factorial ANOVA was performed for height and display mode for each thickness. Legibility was, in general, better for thinner characters in negative mode and was better in negative mode under dark illuminance for those with and without cataracts. This tendency was more pronounced in the elderly (over 65 years old). Paired comparisons showed that legibility was better in negative mode under both illuminance conditions, especially with medium and thin characters, for those with and without cataracts. Although there are few accounts of the effects of positive and negative modes in various existing guidelines, this finding would suggest that legibility can be enhanced by using the negative mode.

Performance analysis of motion-compensated de-interlacing systems

A lot of research has been conducted on motion-compensated (MC) de-interlacing, but there are very few publications that discuss the performances of de-interlacing quantatively. The various methods are compared through their performance on known video sequences. Linear system analysis of interlaced video and de-interlacer are proposed in. It is well established that the performance of the MC methods outperform the fixed or motion-adaptive methods when the motion vectors used are reliable and true to the scene content. Being an open-loop process the performance of the MC de-interlacers degrade drastically when there are motion vector errors. In this paper, a linear system analysis of MC video upconversion systems is presented and the effects of motion vector accuracy on system performance are analyzed. We investigate the various factors that contribute to the motion vector inaccuracy, such as incorrect motion modelling, acceleration between the frames, and insufficient interpolation kernel.

Operating videoscope for microlaryngeal surgery

For operative laryngoscopy, a laryngoscope is introduced into the anesthetized patient's mouth for exploration of the larynx and vocal cords. To improve the vision, a binocular microscope is positioned between the operator and the laryngoscope. This interferes, to some degree, with the introduction of instruments, particularly if the surgeon is using bimanual manipulation. In the case of lengthy operations, a fatigue or stress factor can be troublesome to the operator. The authors developed a video laryngoscope using standard blades. An angulated telescope attached to a TV camera was introduced in the top portion of the blade. An enlarged image from the anatomy was produced and viewed from a convenient distance. The manipulations are unobstructed, and simultaneous records can be obtained. It is the method of choice for teaching. The operative laryngoscope is less cumbersome and supersedes the microscope for viewing the endolarynx. This new technique was used successfully in 532 cases.

[Correction of respiratory movement using ultrasound for cardiac nuclear medicine examinations: fundamental study using an X-ray TV machine]

Organ movements that occur naturally as a result of vital functions such as respiration and heartbeat cause deterioration of image quality in nuclear medicine imaging. Among these movements, respiration has a large effect, but there has been no practical method of correcting for this. In the present study, we examined a method of correction that uses ultrasound images to correct baseline shifts caused by respiration in cardiac nuclear medicine examinations. To evaluate the validity of this method, simulation studies were conducted with an X-ray TV machine instead of a nuclear medicine scanner. The X-ray TV images and ultrasound images were recorded as digital movies and processed with public domain software (Scion Image). Organ movements were detected in the ultrasound images of the subcostal four-chamber view mode using slit regions of interest and were measured on a two-dimensional image coordinate. Then translational shifts were applied to the X-ray TV images to correct these movements by using macro-functions of the software. As a result, respiratory movements of about 20.1 mm were successfully reduced to less than 2.6 mm. We conclude that this correction technique is potentially useful in nuclear medicine cardiology.

Substance flow analysis of brominated flame retardants and related compounds in waste TV sets in Japan

We conducted time-series substance flow analysis of two types of brominated flame retardants (BFRs)--polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA)--and two types of related compounds--Sb (used with BFRs for flame inhibition) and polybrominated dibenzo dioxins and furans (PBDDs/DFs: unintended byproducts)--in five size categories of waste TV sets in Japan. Two scenarios were created with BFR substitutions and compared to a "business as usual" scenario in order to obtain basic information for strategic product management. The results showed that the use of DecaBDE in rear and front covers of TV sets began in fiscal 1987-1990 and 1993-1996, respectively, and that TBBPA was used to some extent as a substitute for DecaBDE in the 90s. The amount of waste Br in the plastic covers is predicted to increase until at least fiscal 2020 due to the increasing size of TV sets. Although substitution of BFRs with non-BFRs in Japan by 2006 will reduce waste Br, the amount in waste TV sets will not peak until fiscal 2009. The results will help inform decisions in Japan regarding the recovery and disposal of waste TV sets. The methods used would benefit waste managers faced with similar issues in other countries.

Surreptitiously projecting different movies to two subsets of viewers

A new technique (manipulation of overlapping rivalrous images by polarizing filters, or MORI) has been invented for presenting on the same screen two different images that can be seen separately by two groups of viewers without their noticing the overlap. It can easily create desired artificial conflicts among viewers. Two perpendicular polarizing filters provide separate invisible channels from dual video projectors to two groups of viewers on a single screen. The basic principle of the presentation technique, details of the apparatus, and limitations are introduced. As an example of the application of this technique, an eyewitness experiment is briefly reported. The results of experiments conducted by the author and colleagues provide evidence of the effectiveness of this technique with various projectors, video materials, group sizes, and ages of participants.

Multimedia telehomecare system using standard TV set

Nowadays, there are a very large number of patients that need specific health support at home. The deployment of broadband communication networks is making feasible the provision of home care services with a proper quality of service. This paper presents a telehomecare multimedia platform that runs over integrated services digital network and internet protocol using videoconferencing standards H.320 and H.323, and standard TV set for patient interaction. This platform allows online remote monitoring: ECG, heart sound, blood pressure. Usability, affordability, and interoperability were considered for the design and development of its hardware and software components. A first evaluation of technical and usability aspects were carried forward with 52 patients of a private clinic and 10 students in the University. Results show a high rate (mean = 4.33, standard deviation--SD = 1.63 in a five-points Likert scale) in the global perception of users on the quality of images, voice, and feeling of virtual presence.

Suppressive efficacies by adaptive temporal filtering system on photoparoxysmal response elicited by flickering pattern stimulation

PURPOSE

Based on our previous study that validated efficacies of an adaptive temporal filtering system (ATFS) suppressing a photoparoxysmal response (PPR) elicited by a chromatic flicker stimulation, we further studied ATFS efficacies on PPRs elicited by pattern-flicker stimulation in 13 photosensitive epilepsy patients.

METHODS

Subjects were 13 photosensitive epilepsy patients (two male and 11 female patients; mean age +/- SD, 20.9 +/- 8.9 years) who were all sensitive to a flickering geometric-pattern scene. We used a scene consisting of 15-Hz flickering 4 c/deg stripe images lasting for 4 s. With a 14-inch television set 2 m before a subject, we displayed the following video scenes: nonfiltered and filtered flickering-stripe scenes; for the latter, two kinds of ATFSs with mild efficacy and strong efficacy were used. Three flickering-stripe scenes altogether, each of which lasted for 4 s, were given at random with a 10-s interval.

RESULTS

A nonfiltered flickering-stripe scene elicited generalized PPRs in all patients; a filtered scene by use of an ATFS with mild efficacy elicited generalized PPRs in six patients (46%), whereas that by an ATFS with strong efficacy exhibited no PPRs.

CONCLUSIONS

This study, using an ATFS, again shows suppressive efficacy on PPRs elicited by flickering-pattern stimulation. Therefore a series of our studies suggested that ATFS may be useful as a preventive measure for photosensitive seizures triggered by stimulative flickering images from televisions or other displays.

Optical filters inhibiting television-induced photosensitive seizures

OBJECTIVE

Televised images are the most common stimulus for provoking photosensitive seizures in photosensitive persons. To inhibit photosensitive seizures in photosensitive persons who do or do not have epilepsy, the authors sought nonpharmacologic methods for reducing the levels of photic stimulation of televised images.

BACKGROUND

The authors found two types of pathophysiologic mechanisms (wavelength-dependent and quantity of light-dependent mechanisms) for photoparoxysmal responses (PPR).

METHODS

The authors tested two different types of optical filters, one reflecting long-wavelength red light selectively, which stimulates a wavelength-dependent mechanism, and the other absorbing light in the visible spectrum evenly (neutral density filters). Inhibiting effects of optical filters were studied by conventional intermittent photic stimulation (IPS) using strobe light and novel photic stimulation using flashing cathode ray tubes (CRT).

RESULTS

Both filters individually inhibited PPR insufficiently (less than 50%). Compound optical filters, composed of both types of filters, can inhibit the PPR, approximately 90% for IPS and 95% for photic stimulation with CRT. These compound optical filters do not destroy chromaticity of emissions from the television's CRT.

CONCLUSIONS

These compound filters may be useful to prevent seizures induced by television in photosensitive persons.

[Influence of tandem optics and television tube of modern digital fluoroscopy equipment on image quality]

The influence of the tandem optics and the TV-tube to the image quality of 1k- and 2k-radiographs of a modern fluoroscopy equipment should be assessed on the basis of objective parameters and clinical requirements. Radiographs of different phantoms with 1k- and 2k-image matrix, different illumination point corrections (IPC) and signal gray levels were taken, examined and evaluated, in order to determine the objective image parameters and the clinical relevancy of these parameters. On the one hand, the digital images data could be used directly for evaluation; on the other hand, the radiographs could be visually evaluated by experienced radiologists within the framework of a blind study. The IPC is controlled by the aperture of the iris diaphragm and the insertion of a neutral gray filter in the tandem optics. The larger the aperture of the iris diaphragm (at constant image receiver dose) the higher were gradation, signal to noise ratio (SNR) and image homogeneity. Furthermore, the larger the aperture, the lower was the square wave response function (SWRF). The insertion of a gray filter in the tandem optics decreases gradation, SNR and homogeneity, and improves the SWRF.

[A simple X-ray TV picture freezer]

A simple X-ray TV picture freezer, with just 5 chips of LSIC, is discussed in this paper. Its VRAM block is made up of cheap and relatively lower speed large scale SRAM. The memory block works in alternate mode and can meet the sample speed up to 10-12 Msps and the pixel matrix of 512 x 512.

Outcomes from television sets toppling onto toddlers

OBJECTIVE

To assess outcomes of trauma caused by television sets falling onto children.

METHODS

Retrospective review of medical charts of 183 children aged 7 years and younger hospitalized for injuries caused by falling television sets. Descriptive statistics were applied.

DATA SOURCES

Phase 2 (1988-1995) and phase 3 (1995-1999) of the National Pediatric Trauma Registry.

OUTCOME MEASURES

Demographics, injured body region, injury severity measured by the Injury Severity Score, length of hospital stay, admission to the intensive care unit, surgical intervention, in-hospital death rate, disability resulting from the injury, and disposition at discharge from the hospital.

RESULTS

The sample population represented 0.5% of all National Pediatric Trauma Registry admissions in this age group. More than half (57.4%) of the children were boys, and more than three quarters (76.0%) were 1 to 4 years of age. In most cases (95.1%), the injury occurred at home. Most children (68.3%) sustained head injury, and 43.7% sustained injuries to multiple body regions. More than a quarter (28.4%) of the children had injuries of moderate to critical severity (Injury Severity Score, 10-75), about a third (31.1%) required admission to the intensive care unit, and 20.2% needed 1 or more surgical interventions. The average length of hospitalization was 3.3 days. Five children (2.7%) died, and 48 (26.2%) developed functional limitations, which required discharge to a rehabilitation facility in 5 cases. Most (94.0%) of the children returned to their home. The proportion of television set-related injuries increased more than 100% during the study period.

CONCLUSIONS

The injuries reported are not trivial. Not only did they require hospitalization, but they also resulted in an in-hospital death rate comparable to the 2.5% rate observed in children of the same age group injured by unintentional blunt trauma, inclusive of motor vehicle traffic-related injuries. Since virtually all American children are at risk for such injury, we suggest that television set designs be modified to reduce the incidence and severity of the problem.

Application of a purge and trap TDS-GC/MS procedure for the determination of emissions from flame retarded polymers

Emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from different thermoplastic polymers used in electrotechnical applications were investigated using a purge and trap procedure that involved adsorption on Tenax GR. Results were compared to those for an operating TV set monitored in a test chamber. The analyses were in both cases carried out using thermodesorption gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (TDS-GC/MS). Substances identified were monomers, volatile additives, or related compounds. Special attention was given to the detection of halogenated compounds. Their origin was studied using reference samples and synthetic standards.

The VN project: endoscopic image processing for neurosurgery

We developed a navigation support system for endoscopic interventions that allows three-dimensional (3-D) information to be extracted from endoscopic video data and superimposed onto such live video sequences. The endoscope is coupled to a position measurement system and a video camera as components of a calibrated system. In this article we show that the radial distortions of the wide-angle endoscopic lens system can be successfully corrected and an overall accuracy of about 0.7 mm is achievable. Tracking on live endoscopic video sequences allows accurate 3-D depth data to be obtained from multiple camera views.

Improvement of light collection efficiency of lens-coupled YAG screen TV system for a high-voltage electron microscope

A new lens coupling television (TV) system using a YAG (Yttrium Aluminum Garnet: Y(3)Al(5)O(12) : Ce(3+)) single crystal screen has been developed for a high-voltage electron microscope (HVEM), and its performance is examined. The system, using a combination of YAG and lenses, is less damaged by high-energy electron irradiation and reduces the influence of X-rays on the image. YAG screens have not been used for lens-coupling systems, because the high refractive index (n = 1.84) of YAG results in a low light collection efficiency for emitted light. This disadvantage is overcome by combining a thin YAG disk screen (thickness; 100 microm) with a glass hemisphere whose refractive index is 1.81. We found that the light intensity is almost the same as that obtained with a conventional P22 powder screen and lenses system. The resolution is about 55 microm on the YAG screen, and this value is 1.3 times higher than that measured by the conventional system. Shading and distortion do not affect TV observation. Detection quantum efficiency, obtained after correction of the channel mixing effect, is about 0.1.

[Follow-up of patients suffering from age-related macular degeneration, supplied with visual aids]

BACKGROUND

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is at present the major cause of legal blindness in industrialized countries. The results of various treatments are often not satisfactory and follow-up by Low-Vision services is then the only solution for this population. Few studies have been published on this subject. The purpose of this study is to present the use of magnifying systems and the degree of satisfaction obtained for this series of patients 6 months after prescription.

PATIENTS AND METHODS

Forty-four patients were examined, 42 of whom were eligible for the study. Lenses, magnifying glasses, visual systems for intermediate distance, and electronic systems were proposed. A low-vision training was given to every patient.

RESULTS

The highest degree of use and satisfaction was achieved with the electronic systems. In some cases, however, the other systems were well accepted by the patients.

CONCLUSION

The follow-up of patients with age-related macular degeneration is of great social importance. The independence of elderly people can be safeguarded thanks to the help of Low-Vision services with a good equipment and a well-trained team. Sometimes, unsophisticated systems such as magnifying glasses can be proposed, but the best results are mostly obtained through electronic systems (TV).

An automatic 3D tracking system with a PC and a single TV camera

We developed a novel system, for tracking a freely moving object (animal) in a limited 3D space, based on a closed loop TV and PC. Instead of using a pair of TV cameras to capture the 3D scene through the pair of its orthogonal projections, the system captures these projections by using a single TV camera. The direct view of the scene (e.g. its ground plan, i.e. projection onto the x-y plane) is captured together with its side projection, (i.e. projection onto the z-x plane) observed in a slanted mirror. The system uses a simple detection algorithm and hardware that were originally developed for 2D tracking of a single, contrast object on a stable and homogeneous background. All three coordinates of the tracked object are evaluated, displayed and stored in real-time, at 25 interlaced frames (samples) per second. The system was implemented on an IBM PC enhanced by an universal I/O board (Kaminsky, Yu, Krekule, I. Universal multifunctional IBM PC I/O board for clinical examinations and experimental research in neuroscience. Physiol Res 1994;43:193-199) and tested by tracking a LED marker, a small living fish in a water tank and a pair of LED markers which were activated one at the time in alternating TV frames thereby demonstrating the ability to simultaneously track two or more objects in 3D.

High-definition true-colour television for use in minimally invasive medical procedures

Endoscopes are key elements in the application of minimally invasive medical procedures. Thereby, image quality, ease of application and safety are of decisive importance for the user. This communication is primarily concerned with aspects relating to image quality. Standard television technology is presently used in endoscopes for image presentation purposes. It is however shown, that the inherent optical quality of most endoscopes exceeds the performance of standard TV. Accordingly, a special purpose advanced digital television system exhibiting true colour performance has been developed. Since endoscopic images usually are circular, its aspect ratio is quadratic with a spatial resolution of 1000 x 1000 pixels. It has furthermore a temporal resolution of 1 to 30 Hz noninterlaced and a contrast resolution of 56.6 dB. The design and performance of the system is documented.

Internet TV set-top devices for web-based projects: smooth sailing or rough surfing?

BACKGROUND

The explosion of projects utilizing the World Wide Web in the home environment offer a select group of patients a tremendous tool for information management and health-related support. However, many patients do not have ready access to the Internet in their homes. For these patients, Internet TV set-top devices may provide a low cost alternative to PC-based web browsers.

METHODS

As a part of a larger descriptive study providing adolescents with access to an on-line support group, we investigated the feasibility of using an Internet TV set-top device for those patients in need of Internet access.

RESULTS

Although the devices required some configuration before being installed in the home environment, they required a minimum of support and were well accepted by these patients. However, these patients used the Internet less frequently than their peers with home personal computers--most likely due to a lack of easy availability of the telephone or television at all times.

CONCLUSION

Internet TV set-top devices represent a feasible alternative access to the World Wide Web for some patients. Any attempt to use these devices should, however, be coupled with education to all family members, and an attempt at providing a dedicated television and phone line.
