Abstract
InP nanoparticles were formed using a solution method, and the InP nanoparticles that were embedded in a polystyrene (PS) layer were formed using the spin-coating method. The transmission electron microscopy images showed that the InP nanoparticles were randomly distributed in the PS layer. The measured capacitance-voltage (C-V) of the Al/InP nanoparticles embedded in the PS layer/PS/p-Si(100) device at 300 K showed a clockwise hysteresis of the C-V curve. Based on the C-V results, the origin of variations in the memory storage of nonvolatile memory devices that were fabricated using InP nanoparticles embedded in a PS layer due to the scale-down was described.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Since apoptosis induced by caspases may play a role in the prognosis of breast cancer, the present study analyzed the polymorphisms of caspase genes and their impact on the survival of 240 patients with early invasive ductal breast cancer.
Material and Methods: The genomic DNA was extracted from paraffin-embedded tumor-free tissue or blood, and 8 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of 5 apoptosis-related genes in the apoptosis pathway determined using a Sequenom MassARRAY system. Results: During the median follow-up of 68.6 (range, 36.3-173.1) months, 43 relapses and 25 deaths occurred. Among the target polymorphisms, the caspase 9 gene polymorphism (CASP9 rs4645978) in a dominant model of the A allele was associated with survival in a log-rank test (P < 0.05). In a multivariate analysis, the GA+AA genotype of CASP9 rs4645978 was significantly correlated with a better disease-free survival (HR = 0.250; 95% CI = 0.075 - 0.840; P = 0.025), while marginally with distant disease-free or overall survival (HR = 0.360 and 0.337; P = 0.118 and 0.158, respectively). No clinicopathologic difference was observed according to the genotypes of this polymorphism. Discussion: The CASP9 rs4645978 was identified as a possible prognostic factor of survival in patients with operated invasive breast cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Aneurysms are rarely associated with symptomatic intracranial stenosis. We report the results of recanalization by stent placement in patients with symptomatic severe intracranial stenosis associated with adjacent aneurysms. MATERIALS AND METHODS Of 139 patients who underwent intracranial stent placement during a 5-year period, 10 (7%) had symptomatic severe intracranial stenosis associated with adjacent aneurysms. Five were in the VA, 3 in the BA, and 2 in M1. The types of aneurysm were atherosclerotic fusiform (n = 5), ulcerative (n = 4), and saccular (n = 1). We analyzed angiographic findings based on biplane and 3D angiograms and assessed patient outcomes and complications after stent placement. The results were compared with those of a control group without aneurysms who underwent stent placement during the same study period. RESULTS Aneurysm locations were post- (n = 6), in- (n = 2), and pre-stenotic (n = 2). After angioplasty with stent placement and/or aneurysm embolization, there were no lesion-related strokes or deaths during a median follow-up period of 25 months (range, 11-43 months). One patient had asymptomatic restenosis. The final mRS score was good (≤2) in all patients. There were no statistically significant differences in event or restenosis rates compared with the control group. CONCLUSIONS Adjacent aneurysms were rarely associated with severe intracranial stenosis but were more common in the posterior circulation. Intracranial stent placement may be performed without additional stroke risk, regardless of the type and location of the aneurysm.

Abstract
We have investigated the electronic structure of double perovskites, Ba(2)FeReO(6) (metallic) and Ca(2)FeReO(6) (insulating) using optical and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. By comparing the experimental results with the density functional theory calculations, we found that the electronic structure of Ba(2)FeReO(6) could be determined from the interaction of the electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling. On the other hand, for Ca(2)FeReO(6), the lattice distortion and electron correlation are important in determining the electronic structure. Additionally, the insulating gap in Ca(2)FeReO(6) is realized by the spin-orbit coupling. Our work shows that the subtle interplay of the spin-orbit interaction, electron correlation, and lattice distortion should be taken into account to understand the electronic structure of the 5d transition metal oxides.

Abstract
White rot, which is caused by Sclerotium cepivorum, is a lethal disease affecting green onions. Three different types of nano-silver liquid (WA-CV-WA13B, WA-AT-WB13R, and WA-PR-WB13R) were tested in several different concentrations on three types of media to assess their antifungal activities. Results from in vitro experiments showed that all three of the nano-silver liquids had more than 90% inhibition rates at a concentration of 7 ppm. Greenhouse experiments revealed that all of the nano-silver liquids increased biomass and dry weights, and there were minimal changes in the population of various bacteria and fungi from the soil of greenhouse-cultivated green onions. In addition, a soil chemical analysis showed that there were minimal changes in soil composition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The safety and efficacy of SBCAS have not been evaluated in detail. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the outcome after SBCAS in high-risk patients compared with unilateral stent placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between March 2002 and October 2008, a total of 205 consecutive high-risk patients underwent CAS at our institution. Of these patients, 30 (14.6%) underwent SBCAS (n = 24) and staged SBCAS (n = 6). Patients who underwent unilateral CAS (n = 175) during the same period served as controls. The stroke risk factors, procedural results, and outcome at 30 days and 6 months, as well as the restenosis rate at 6 months, were compared by using either the chi(2) test or the Kruskal-Wallis equality-of-populations rank test. RESULTS Our data revealed no significant differences in the stroke risk factors between the SBCAS and the control group. HPS occurred more commonly in SBCAS (ie, 16.7%, 4/24) compared with 2.9% (5/175) in the control group (P = .014). However, there was no statistical significance between 2 groups in the event rate of stroke (minor and/or major stroke), death, or restenosis at 6 months. CONCLUSIONS There was no significant difference in outcome at 6 months following stent placement between SBCAS and unilateral CAS in the high-risk patient group, even though HPS occurred more commonly after SBCAS.

High-throughput quantitative analysis of plant N-glycan using a DNA sequencer. Biochem Biophys Res Commun 2009; 380:223-9. Abstract
High-throughput quantitative analytical method for plant N-glycan has been developed. All steps, including peptide N-glycosidase (PNGase) A treatment, glycan preparation, and exoglycosidase digestion, were optimized for high-throughput applications using 96-well format procedures and automatic analysis on a DNA sequencer. The glycans of horseradish peroxidase with plant-specific core alpha(1,3)-fucose can be distinguished by the comparison of the glycan profiles obtained via PNGase A and F treatments. The peaks of the glycans with (91%) and without (1.2%) alpha(1,3)-fucose could be readily quantified and shown to harbor bisecting beta(1,2)-xylose via simultaneous treatment with alpha(1,3)-mannosidase and beta(1,2)-xylosidase. This optimized method was successfully applied to analyze N-glycans of plant-expressed recombinant antibody, which was engineered to contain a minor amount of glycan harboring beta(1,2)-xylose. These results indicate that our DNA sequencer-based method provides quantitative information for plant-specific N-glycan analysis in a high-throughput manner, which has not previously been achieved by glycan profiling based on mass spectrometry.

Abstract
Commercially, lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is one of the most important leafy vegetables. Lettuce produces a milky latex of variable chemical compositions within its laticifers. As a step toward understanding the main physiological roles of this latex in higher plants, we embarked on its proteomic analysis. We investigated 587 latex proteins that were identified from the lettuce latex using multidimensional protein-identification technology. A bioinformatics analysis showed that the most frequently encountered proteins in the latex were organellar proteins from plastids and mitochondria, followed by nucleic and cytoplasmic proteins. Functional classification of the identified proteins showed that proteins related to metabolism, cell rescue, defense, and virulence were the most abundant in lettuce latex. Furthermore, numerous resistance proteins of lettuce and viral proteins were present in the latex suggesting for the first time a possible function of the lettuce latex in defense or pathogenesis. To the knowledge of the authors, this is the first large-scale proteome analysis of lettuce latex.

A non-cell-autonomous mechanism for the control of plant architecture and epidermal differentiation involves intercellular trafficking of BREVIPEDICELLUS protein. Abstract
Intercellular trafficking of maize KNOTTED1 and its homologous KNOTTED1-related homeobox (KNOX) proteins has been reported; however, little is known about the functional significance of KNOX trafficking in plant development. In this study, we showed that intercellular movement of BREVIPEDICELLUS (BP or KNAT1), the closest Arabidopsis homologue of KNOTTED1, is tissue-specific and takes place through a selective pathway. When BP was fused to a red fluorescent mCherry construct, it could move from the mesophyll to epidermal cells of leaves, although it could not move out from the cortex/endodermis of roots. Using a trichome rescue-trafficking assay, we also showed that BP fusion could confer gain-of-trafficking function to the cell-autonomous GLABROUS1 (GL1) protein. In the wild type, BP transcripts are expressed in the sub-epidermal cortical cell layers of the inflorescence stem and pedicel. However, bp mutant phenotypes include defects in epidermal cell differentiation suggesting a non-cell-autonomous function. Expression of a GFP:BP fusion under the control of a BP promoter specific to the stem cortex layers resulted in epidermal GFP fluorescence suggesting its movement from subepidermis to epidermis. Here, we provide evidence from complementation analyses using cell autonomous or non-cell-autonomous BP fusions that the intercellular trafficking of BP protein is important for plant architecture and epidermal differentiation.

Retinoic acid leads to cytoskeletal rearrangement through AMPK-Rac1 and stimulates glucose uptake through AMPK-p38 MAPK in skeletal muscle cells. J Biol Chem 2008; 283:33969-74. Abstract
Retinoic acid (RA) is one of the major components of vitamin A. In the present study, we found that retinoic acid activated AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). RA induced Rac1-GTP formation and phosphorylation of its downstream target, p21-activated kinase (PAK), whereas the inhibition of AMPK blocked RA-induced Rac1 activation. Moreover, cofilin, an actin polymerization regulator, was activated when incubated with RA. We then showed that inhibition of AMPK by compound C, a selective inhibitor of AMPK, or small interfering RNA of AMPK alpha1 blocked RA-induced cofilin phosphorylation. Additionally, we found that retinoic acid-stimulated glucose uptake in differentiated C2C12 myoblast cells and activated p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). Finally, the inhibition of AMPK and p38 MAPK blocked retinoic acid-induced glucose uptake. In summary, our results suggest that retinoic acid may have cytoskeletal roles in skeletal muscle cells via stimulation of the AMPK-Rac1-PAK-cofillin pathway and may also have beneficial roles in glucose metabolism via stimulation of the AMPK-p38 MAPK pathway.

Application of iron-coated sand and manganese-coated sand on the treatment of both As(III) and As(V). WATER SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY : A JOURNAL OF THE INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION ON WATER POLLUTION RESEARCH 2007; 55:69-75. Abstract
In this study, manganese-coated sand (MCS) and iron-coated sand (ICS) were applied in the oxidation of As(III) and adsorption of As(V), respectively. ICS and MCS were prepared by mixing FeCl3 and Mn(NO3)2, respectively, with Joomoonjin sand at 150 degrees C. In the batch adsorption isotherms, adsorption of As(III) and As(V) onto ICS followed a Langmuir type. ICS showed a greater capacity in the removal of As(V) than As(III) and also in the removal of As(V) compared with MCS. Three different configurations of ICS and MCS were used to investigate the oxidation of As(III) and adsorption of As(V) in a column. In the homogenised system, arsenic breakthrough was approximately two-times delayed compared with the separately packed systems. After breakthrough of arsenic, concentration of As(III) in the effluents was below 40 ppb for the entire reaction period in all configurations, and most arsenic was identified as As(V) owing to near complete conversion of As(III) to As(V) by MCS. The catalytic activity of MCS on the oxidation of As(III) was maintained up to 700 pore volumes, which corresponds to the treatment of at least 300 mg As(III) based on the 1 kg MCS. Compared with the homogenised column, the released Mn(II) concentration from two-staged and four-staged columns was great for the entire reaction period. In the case where the same amount of ICS and MCS was packed in a filtration system, the homogenised column was identified as a better configuration compared with the two-staged and four-staged columns when considering the arsenic breakthrough time as well as the released concentration of Fe(III) and Mn(II).

Effect of orbital rotation and mixing on the optical properties of orthorhombic RMnO3 (R=La, Pr, Nd, Gd, and Tb). PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2006; 96:247205. Abstract
We investigated the ab-plane absorption spectra of RMnO3 (R=La, Pr, Nd, Gd, and Tb) thin films. As the ionic radius of the R ion decreases, we observed a drastic suppression of the 2 eV peak, i.e., the intersite optical transition between spin- and orbital-aligned states across the Mott gap. We found that, in addition to orbital rotation, orbital mixing in the orbital-ordered state should play an important role in the suppression of 2 eV peak. We also found that the spectral weight of 2 eV peak is proportional to the A-type antiferromagnetic ordering temperature, which suggests that the magnetic interaction should be sensitively coupled to the orbital degree of freedom.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the level of stress and cigarette smoking behaviors in Korean men with diabetes and to exam the relationships among them. Data were collected using the questionnaire including background characteristics, modified Brief Encounter Psychosocial Instrument (BEPSI) and the Fagerstrom Tolerance Questionnaire (FTQ). 37% of the participants were current smokers with a mean of 4.22 FTQ score. 22% among the current smokers had a nicotine dependency. 43.1% indicated they were considering quitting smoking within 6 months. The level of stress was not associated with the amount of smoking. However, the level of stress was associated with nicotine dependency. There were no significant differences between the smoking cessation stage and stress. In conclusion, the prevalence of smoking among Korean men with diabetes is high. The large proportion of smokers in the contemplation and preparation stages should be supported by the need for stage-matched interventions targeting this special group of smokers.

Diagnostic approach using the expression profiling of the P53 tumor suppressor gene and its related proteins in ovarian epithelial tumors. Int J Gynecol Cancer 2005; 15:453-61. Abstract
The initial aim of this study was to examine the expression profiles of P53 and its upstream genes, downstream genes, and cell cycle regulators to determine whether these markers are useful for making a differential diagnosis among the benign, borderline, and malignant ovarian epithelial tumors. Between borderline and malignant tumors, the increased expression levels of P53, Bax, Cyclin E, and cyclin-dependent kinase-2 as well as the decreased expression levels of growth arrest and DNA damage (GADD45) and murine double minute-2 (MDM2) were significantly associated with malignancy (P < 0.01, each). Using the receiver operating curve (ROC), the most reliable cutoff value of the added-up staining scores of those markers was 4.5 with 79% sensitivity and 89% specificity for malignancy. Between benign and borderline tumors, the P21 and Bax expression levels were significantly higher in borderline tumors, whereas the Bcl-2 expression level was much higher in benign tumors (P < 0.01, each). Using the ROC, the cutoff value of the added-up staining scores used to discriminate between the two groups was 2.5 with 70% sensitivity and 74% specificity for borderline tumors. Thus, for the differential diagnosis between borderline and malignant tumors, the cutoff value 4.5 of the cumulative staining scores can be used. However, the cutoff value 2.5 for discrimination between benign and borderline tumors may not be useful because of its relatively low sensitivity and specificity. In addition, the P53, GADD45, Cyclin E, and MDM2 expression levels in malignant ovarian tumors might be useful for determining the histologic grade and type.

Abstract
The optical magnetoelectric (ME) effect, i.e., the change of optical absorption upon the reversal of the light propagation direction, has been investigated for a polar ferrimagnet GaFeO3. For dipole- and spin-forbidden d-d transition bands located at 1.2-2.3 eV, a clear signal of the optical ME effect (Deltaalphat approximately 3x10(-3)) is observed with an applied magnetic field as low as 500 Oe and a sample thickness (t) of 50 microm. The observation of a large ME effect in the present compound suggests a possible route to magnification of this novel phenomenon for application.

BACKGROUND Intestinal bleeding in patients with typhoid fever usually occurs in the ileum. However, endoscopic findings in such patients are not well established. We examined the colonoscopic manifestations of intestinal lesions with bleeding in patients with typhoid fever. PATIENTS AND METHODS The colonoscopic findings of seven patients who presented with haematochezia due to typhoid fever were reviewed retrospectively. Typhoid fever was diagnosed when the Salmonella typhi was isolated or when the Widal test showed strongly positive reactions. RESULTS Clinical data and colonoscopic findings were reviewed in seven patients (four men and three women with an average age of 42 years). The most commonly involved area was the terminal ileum (100%), followed by the ileocecal valve (57%), the ascending colon (43%), and the transverse colon (29%). Left colon was intact in all cases. The most common colonoscopic finding was multiple variable-sized punched-out ulcers with slightly elevated margin, as found in five patients. In two patients, only several oedematous hyperaemic mucosal patches with haemorrhagic spots or shallow erosions were seen. Active bleeding was noticed only in one patient, who received endoscopic haemostasis twice. The remaining six patients were treated by conservative treatment including antibiotic therapy. There was no complication during or after the colonoscopic examination. CONCLUSIONS Intestinal bleeding in typhoid fever usually occurs from the ulcers in the ileum or proximal colon, and the most common colonoscopic manifestations are multiple variable-sized punched-out ulcerations.

Abstract
Optical conductivity spectra sigma(omega) were used to investigate the effect of orbital ordering on the electronic structure of Ca2RuO4. Our LDA+U calculation predicts Ru 4d(xy) ferro-orbital ordering at the ground state, and well explains the present sigma(omega) as well as the reported O 1s x-ray absorption spectra. Variation of temperature (T) causes a large change of spectral weight over several eV as well as collapse of a charge gap accompanied by elongation of the c-axis Ru-O bond length. These results clearly indicate that the d(xy) orbital ordering plays a crucial role in the metal-insulator transition and the T-dependent electronic structure on a large energy scale.

Abstract
We systematically investigated optical properties of Nd1-xSrxMnO3 single crystals ( x = 0.40, 0.50, 0.55, and 0.65). They are similar in their spin-orbital (SO) disordered states at room temperature. At low temperature, the crystals enter into various SO ordered states, i.e., F-, CE-, A-, and C-type orderings, and their mid-infrared absorptions become quite different. The remarkable variation can be explained by polaron dynamics which depend on the ordering patterns. This SO pattern dependent polaron model can also explain the pseudo CE-type ordering case, demonstrating that this scheme can explain the carrier dynamics in complex SO configurations.

Abstract
PURPOSE Primary sarcoma and SMC (sarcomatous metaplastic carcinoma) of the breast are very rare tumors, accounting for less than 1% of all breast malignancies. There are many controversies concerning the biological characteristics, prognosis and optimal treatment of these tumors owing to the rarity of incidence. The aims of this study were to elucidate the clinicopathologic characteristics of these tumors and to assist in elucidating the optimal treatment plan for the disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS 13 cases of primary sarcoma and 10 cases of SMC that had been treated at KCCH between 1984 and 2001 were retrospectively reviewed. Phyllodes tumors were excluded from our study. RESULTS Among the 13 cases of primary sarcoma included, stromal sarcoma occurred in 5 cases, osteosarcoma in 3 cases, angiosarcoma in 3 cases and spindle cell sarcoma in 2 cases. The mean age of the patients with primary sarcoma and SMC was 39.7 years and 55.1 years respectively (p=0.002). When survival rates were compared according to histologic types, size of tumor, histologic grade, type of surgery and use of adjuvant therapy, both size of tumor (p=0.0256) and histologic grade (p=0.0197) were shown to be prognostic factors. CONCLUSION There were no significantly different features between primary sarcoma and SMC in terms of biologic characteristics or survival rates, with the exception that patients with SMC were older than those with primary sarcoma. Histologic grade and size of tumor were significant prognostic factors of these tumors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Periodontal tissue destruction is a characteristic of periodontitis. This can be caused by either bacterial enzymes or host cell-derived matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). In order to elucidate the etiologic role of oral spirochetes, we investigated the effects of Treponema lecithinolyticum, a novel saccharolytic species, on MMP-2 activation. METHODS Gingival fibroblasts (GFs) and periodontal ligament (PDL) cells obtained from healthy human subjects were cultured to confluence in alpha-minimal essential medium (alpha-MEM) supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum. After serum starvation for a day, the cultures were treated with whole cell sonicates, heat-denatured whole cell sonicates, outer membrane fraction (OMF) or formaldehyde-fixed cells of T. lecithinolyticum. Culture supernatants were collected after incubation for 24 to 48 hours and analyzed for MMP-2 activation by gelatin zymography. Collagenolytic activity was quantitatively measured using human [3H] type IV collagen as a substrate. RESULTS Treatment of GFs and PDL cells with whole cell sonicates, formaldehyde-fixed whole cells, or the OMF of T. lecithinolyticum resulted in the production of MMP-2 partly in the fully active form with a molecular mass of 62 kDa, whereas non-treated control cultures and cultures treated with a heat-denatured fraction did not show the active form. Cultures exposed to T. lecithinolyticum had higher collagenolytic activity than non-treated cultures. CONCLUSIONS Our results demonstrate that T. lecithinolyticum, possibly mediated by proteinaceous cell surface-associated components, may participate in extracellular matrix degradation by activation of MMP-2 during periodontal inflammation.

Abstract
PURPOSE To further assess the frequency of subtelomeric aberrations in a selected population and to examine the feasibility of a clinical testing. METHODS Patients were selected based on the following criteria: (1) mental retardation (IQ < 70) or developmental delay with dysmorphic features; (2) a normal karyotype at the level of resolution of 450 to 500 bands; and (3) exclusion of other possible etiologies by a full genetic assessment and relevant tests. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was performed using multiple subtelomeric probes. Abnormal findings were confirmed by 24-color spectral karyotyping or FISH with a specific subtelomeric probe, and family studies were carried out to determine inheritance. RESULTS Clinically significant aberrations were detected in 6 of 150 proband patients (4%), while deletion of the 2q subtelomeric region appeared to be a common variant (6%). CONCLUSIONS FISH with multiple subtelomeric probes is a valuable clinical test for establishing a definitive diagnosis for patients with unexplained mental retardation/developmental disorders.

Direct duplication of 8p21.3-->p23.1: a cytogenetic anomaly associated with developmental delay without consistent clinical features. AMERICAN JOURNAL OF MEDICAL GENETICS 2001; 103:231-4. Abstract
We report six cases in two families and a sporadic case with a direct duplication of region 8p21.3-->23.1. In one family, the duplication started in the mother and was transmitted to one son and one daughter. In the second family, the father was mosaic for the anomaly that was transmitted to his two daughters. The cytogenetic anomaly was initially described as an 8p+ with banding analysis and then delineated with fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using whole-chromosome 8 painting, 8p specific painting, and 8p or 8p/8q subtelomeric probes. Deletion was not detected in the subtelomeric region of the abnormal chromosome 8 examined in one family and in the sporadic case. The phenotypic picture varies from normal to moderate mental retardation in the affected individuals. No consistent minor anomalies or congenital defects were observed among these cases. After comparing the chromosome region involved in our cases with those in others having direct or inverted duplications of 8p, it is thought that the segment 8p21.1-->21.3 might be the critical region for an 8p duplication syndrome. The parental origin of the duplication does not seem to impact its clinical significance.

Helical ribbon aggregate composed of a crown-appended cholesterol derivative which acts as an amphiphilic gelator of organic solvents and as a template for chiral silica transcription. J Am Chem Soc 2001; 123:8785-9. [PMID: 11535084 DOI: 10.1021/ja010508h] [Citation(s) in RCA: 246] [Impact Index Per Article: 10.7] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/30/2022]
Abstract
New crown-appended cholesterol-based organogelator 1, which has two cholesterol skeletons as a chiral aggregate-forming site, two amino groups as an acidic proton-binding site, and one crown moiety as a cation-binding site, was synthesized, and the gelation ability was evaluated in organic solvents. It can gelate acetic acid, acetonitrile, acetone, ethanol, 1-butanol, 1-hexanol, DMSO, and DMF under 1.0 wt %, indicating that 1 acts as a versatile gelator of various organic solvents. To characterize the aggregation mode in the organogel system, we observed a CD spectrum of the acetic acid gel 1. In the CD spectrum, the lambda(theta)=0 value appears at 353 nm, which is the same as the absorption maximum lambda(max) = 353 nm. The positive sign for the first Cotton effect indicates that the dipole moments of azobenzene chromophores tend to orient in a clockwise direction. Very surprisingly, the TEM images of the 1 + acetic acid gel resulted in the helical ribbon and the tubular structures. Sol-gel polymerization of tetraethoxysilane was carried out using 1 in the gel phase. The silica obtained from the 1 + acetic acid gel showed the helical ribbon with 1700-1800-nm pitches and the tubular structure of the silica with approximately 560-nm outer diameter. As far as can be recognized, all the helicity possesses a right-handed helical motif. Since the exciton-coupling band of the organogel also shows R (right-handed) helicity, we consider that a microscopic helicity is reflected by a macroscopic helicity.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence, capsular serotype, and antimicrobial susceptibility of Streptococcus suis isolated from slaughter pigs. Capsular serotype and antimicrobial susceptibility were determined by coagglutination test and agar dilution minimum inhibitory concentration, respectively. Streptococcus suis was isolated from 55 of the 406 palatine tonsillar samples tested (13.8%) and 14 of the 29 sampled herds (48.3%). Of the 55 isolates recovered from slaughter pigs, 26 (47.3%) were untypeable. Of the remaining 29 isolates, capsular serotypes 9 (9 isolates) and 16 (4 isolates) were the most common, followed by capsular serotypes 4 (3 isolates) and 7 (3 isolates). Every capsulated isolate was typeable and no palatine tonsillar sample yielded more than one serotype. Most of isolates were susceptible to low concentrations (MIC90) of amoxicillin (2 microg/mL), ceftiofur (1 microg/mL), and penicillin (1 microg/mL). No correlation was found between antimicrobial susceptibility and capsular serotype.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to develop an effective omeprazole buccal adhesive tablet with excellent bioadhesive force and good drug stability in human saliva. The omeprazole buccal adhesive tablets were prepared with various bioadhesive polymers, alkali materials, and croscarmellose sodium. Their physicochemical properties, such as bioadhesive force and drug stability in human saliva, were investigated. The release and bioavailability of omeprazole delivered by the buccal adhesive tablets were studied. As bioadhesive additives for the omeprazole tablet, a mixture of sodium alginate and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) was selected. The omeprazole tablets prepared with bioadhesive polymers alone had bioadhesive forces suitable for a buccal adhesive tablet, but the stability of omeprazole in human saliva was not satisfactory. Among alkali materials, only magnesium oxide could be an alkali stabilizerfor omeprazole buccal adhesive tablets due to its strong waterproofing effect. Croscarmellose sodium enhanced the release of omeprazole from the tablets; however, it decreased the bioadhesive forces and stability of omeprazole tablets in human saliva. The tablet composed of omeprazole/sodium alginate/HPMC/magnesium oxide/croscarmellose sodium (20/24/6/50/10 mg) could be attached on the human cheek without disintegration, and it enhanced the stability of omeprazole in human saliva for at least 4 h and gave fast release of omeprazole. The plasma concentration of omeprazole in hamsters increased to a maximum of 370 ng/ml at 45 min after buccal administration and continuously maintained a high level of 146-366 ng/ml until 6 h. The buccal bioavailability of omeprazole in hamsters was 13.7% +/- 3.2%. These results demonstrate that the omeprazole buccal adhesive tablet would be useful for delivery of an omeprazole that degrades very rapidly in acidic aqueous medium and undergoes hepatic first-pass metabolism after oral administration.

Abstract
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections are commonly reported in severely immunocompromised hosts and ulcers of the alimentary tract are frequently observed in systemic CMV infections. However, invasive and ulcerative disease of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract caused by CMV has also been reported in healthy adults. Many reports show that a CMV infection can produce localized ulcerations in the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and colon in nonimmunocompromised individuals. The most common site of involvement by CMV infection in the GI tract is the colon followed by the upper GI tract and the least common site is the small intestine. Although GI bleeding is one of the major presenting symptoms of patients with CMV infections of the GI tract, lower GI bleeding due to CMV ileal ulcers in immunocompetent patients, to our knowledge, has not been reported in the English literature. Recently, we experienced a case of lower GI bleeding due to CMV ileal ulcers in a 57-year-old man who had no evidence of immunocompromise. This case suggests that small intestinal ulcers due to CMV infection should be included in the differential diagnosis of lower GI bleeding even in immunocompetent hosts.

Abstract
A series of lysophosphatidylcholines were isolated from the marine sponge Spirastrella abata by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and analyzed by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry (FAB-MS). Their structural elucidation was carried out with fast atom bombardment tandem mass spectrometry (FAB-MS/MS). The collision-induced dissociation (CID) of protonated and sodiated molecular ions produced diverse product ions via a series of dissociative processes. Because of the positive charge of the amine group at the end of the molecules, charge-remote fragmentation patterns of specific ions, [M + H](+) or [M + Na](+), were very helpful for the identification of product ions which are characteristic for choline and long hydrocarbon chains substituted at the glycerol back bone. Moreover, the CID-MS/MS spectra of sodium adducted molecular ions for lysophosphatidylcholines yielded common characteristic fragment ions for the choline moiety and characteristic ions [M + Na-103](+), [M + Na-85](+) and [M + Na-59](+) in the higher mass region.

Abstract
Chiral amide- and urea-type organic gelators (1-6), based on cyclohexanediamine, have been prepared, and the superstructures of the organogels were evaluated by circular dichroism (CD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The CD spectrum of the amide-based organogel system 1+2 exhibited a negative sign for the first Cotton effect, indicating that the dipole moments in the gelator aggregate orient into an anticlockwise direction. In contrast, the system 3+4 has a positive sign for the first Cotton effect, indicating that they orient into a clockwise direction. In the mixture of urea- and amide-based organogels, CD spectra of 5+2 and 6+4 revealed negative and positive signs, respectively. The helical structure of the amide-based organogels 1+2 and 3+4 clearly showed left- and right-handed structures, respectively, by SEM. To transcribe the chiral, helical structures of the organogels into silica gel, the sol-gel polycondensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) was carried out in acetonitrile or ethanol. Very surprisingly, the left- and right-handed structures of the silica can be created by transcription of left- and right-handed structures of the organogels 1+2 (R enantiomer) and 3+4 (S enantiomer), respectively. In addition, in the mixture systems of urea- and amide-based organogels, the right- and left-handed structures of the organogels 5+2 (R enantiomer) and 6+4 (S enantiomer) were precisely transcribed into the silica structure. The findings suggest that the sol-gel polycondensation proceeds along the surface of the helical structure of the organogels. We therefore believe that the sol-gel polycondensation by means of molecular assembly templates abundantly built in the organogel phase is a new strategy to create superstructured silica materials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies at the population level have demonstrated associations between pemphigus (pemphigus vulgaris, PV, and pemphigus foliaceus, PF) and particular HLA haplotypes, which suggests that there may be a genetic predisposition for the disease. OBJECTIVE/METHODS The aim of the present study was to examine the distribution/frequency pattern of HLA class II alleles (DRB1, DQA1 and DQB1) from a group of 30 Korean patients with pemphigus (15 PV and 15 PF) by PCR amplification with sequence-specific primers. RESULTS In PV, the frequency of DRB1*01 allele was found to be significantly high (pc = 0.0014); in PF, DRB1*01, DQA1*0302 and DQB1*0603 alleles showed positive associations with statistical significances (pc = 0.0002, 0.0007 and 0.0067, respectively), when compared with those found in Korean controls. CONCLUSIONS In this small-sample study, findings of allelic frequencies among Korean patients with pemphigus are somewhat different from those found in other populations.

Abstract
The effects of methanol extract of Rubus crategifolius roots and its solvent fractions were investigated on the proliferation of MCF-7 human breast carcinoma cells. The methanol extract inhibited the proliferation of MCF-7 cells in a concentration dependent manner. Moreover, their methanol soluble (W-M) fraction had the greatest inhibitory effect on the growth of MCF-7 cells. To evaluate whether the W-M fraction affects on the cell cycle of MCF-7 cells, cells treated with this fraction were analyzed with flow cytometry. The W-M fraction increased G0/G1 phase after 24 h-treatment and induced apoptosis after 48 h-treatment. The hallmark of apoptosis, DNA fragmentation, also appeared by W-M fraction after 48 h-treatment. Furthermore, the methanol extract and its W-M fraction inhibited the activity of the topoisomerase I enzyme in the relaxation assay. From these results, their W-M fraction as well as methanol extract of R. crategifolius roots are necessary for further studies as a potent inhibitor of the growth of cancer cells.

Abstract
Multiple color spectral karyotyping (SKY) has been proven to be a very useful tool for characterization of the complex rearrangements in cancer cells and the de novo constitutional structural abnormalities. The sensitivity of SKY in detecting interchromosomal alterations was assessed with 10 constitutional translocations involving subtelomeric regions. Among the 13 small segments tested, 9 were clearly visualized and 8 were unambiguously identified by SKY. Fluorescence in situ hybridizations (FISH) with subtelomeric probes confirmed the reciprocity in three of the four translocations in which a small segment was not detectable by SKY. On the basis of resolution level of G-banding and the information obtained from the FISH analysis, the minimum alteration that SKY can detect is estimated to be 1,000-2,000 kbp in size with the currently available probes. This study has demonstrated the power, but also the limitations, of SKY in detecting small interchromosomal alterations, particularly those in subtelomeric regions.

Abstract
We report a 25-year-old Korean woman with Adult onset Still's disease (AOSD) presented with renal amyloidosis, which had developed four years after disease onset. We successfully treated her with prednisolone, colchicine and cyclophosphamide. A review of the literature uncovered about 10 cases, most of which were treated by various regimens that resulted in poor outcomes. Renal amyloidosis should be suspected in patients with AOSD who have unexplained proteinuria. Although the mechanism of renal amyloid deposition is not well known, earlier histopathologic diagnosis and choice of regimen may affect prognosis.

Abstract
We investigated in vitro anti-inflammatory effects of cynaropicrin, a sesquiterpene lactone from Saussurea lappa, on tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and nitric oxide (NO) release, and lymphocyte proliferation. Cynaropicrin strongly inhibited TNF-alpha release from lipopolysaccharide-stimulated murine macrophage, RAW264.7 cells, and differentiated human macrophage, U937 cells, proved to produce notable amount of TNF-alpha. It also potently attenuated the accumulation of NO released from lipopolysaccharide- and interferon-gamma-stimulated RAW264.7 cells in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, the immunosuppressive effects of the compound on lymphocyte proliferation in response to mitogenic stimuli were examined. Cynaropicrin also dose-dependently suppressed the proliferation of lymphocytes from splenocytes and interleukin-2-sensitive cytotoxic T lymphocyte, CTLL-2 cells, stimulated by lipopolysaccharide, concanavalin A, phytohemagglutinin and interleukin-2. However, treatment with sulphydryl compound, L-cysteine, abrogated all these inhibitory effects. These results suggest that cynaropicrin may participate in the inflammatory response by inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators and the proliferation of lymphocytes and its inhibitory effect is mediated through conjugation with sulphydryl groups of target protein(s).
