Elevated cobalt levels in metal-on-polyethylene knee megaprostheses: a prospective 1-year cohort study of 56 patients with hip and knee megaprostheses

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

Concerns have emerged regarding elevated levels of cobalt and chromium in patients with metal-on-metal megaprostheses. This prospective study aims to identify systemic cobalt and chromium levels in metal-on-polyethylene knee and hip megaprostheses and their associations with other factors.

METHODS

56 patients underwent knee or hip megaprosthesis surgery at 2 sarcoma centers. Serum cobalt and chromium levels were measured preoperatively and thrice within the first year using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

RESULTS

A statistically significant difference in serum cobalt levels (1.4 ppb; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.0-3.3) was observed 1 year after knee megaprosthesis surgery compared with preoperative levels. In contrast no difference in chromium levels was observed after 1 year compared with preoperative levels (0.05 ppb; CI 0.0-0.8). An association between younger age, higher eGFR, and increased cobalt levels was observed. No significant correlations were found between ion levels and resection length or the number of modular connections.

CONCLUSION

We found elevated serum ion levels in metal-on-polyethylene knee megaprostheses in contrast to metal-on-polyethylene hip megaprostheses. Furthermore, a positive correlation between cobalt and chromium levels, and between cobalt and eGFR was identified, along with a negative correlation between cobalt and age. This study highlights the importance of monitoring systemic cobalt and chromium levels in patients with megaprostheses.

Enhancement Effect Induced by the Second Metal to Promote Ozone Catalytic Oxidation of VOCs

It is a promising research direction to develop catalysts with high stability and ozone utilization for low-temperature ozone catalytic oxidation of VOCs. While bimetallic catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic activity compared with conventional single noble metal catalysts, limited success has been achieved in the influence of the bimetallic effect on the stability and ozone utilization of metal catalysts. Herein, it is necessary to systematically study the enhancement effect in the ozone catalytic reaction induced by the second metal. With a simple continuous impregnation method, a platinum-cerium bimetallic catalyst is prepared. Also highlighted are studies from several aspects of the contribution of the second metal (Ce) to the stability and ozone utilization of the catalysts, including the "electronic effect" and "geometric effect". The synergistic removal rate of toluene and ozone is nearly 100% at 30 °C, and it still shows positive stability after high humidity and a long reaction time. More importantly, the instructive significance, which is the in-depth knowledge of enhanced catalytic mechanism of bimetallic catalysts resulting from a second metal, is provided by this work.

Multistress Interplay: Time and Duration of Ocean Acidification Modulate the Toxicity of Mercury and Other Metals

The current understanding of multistress interplay assumes stresses occur in perfect synchrony, but this assumption is rarely met in the natural marine ecosystem. To understand the interplay between nonperfectly overlapped stresses in the ocean, we manipulated a multigenerational experiment (F0-F3) to explore how different temporal scenarios of ocean acidification will affect mercury toxicity in a marine copepod Pseudodiaptomus annandalei. We found that the scenario of past acidification aggravated mercury toxicity but current and persistent acidification mitigated its toxicity. We specifically performed a proteomics analysis for the copepods of F3. The results indicated that current and persistent acidification initiated the energy compensation for development and mercury efflux, whereas past acidification lacked the barrier of H+ and had dysfunction in the detoxification and efflux system, providing a mechanistic understanding of mercury toxicity under different acidification scenarios. Furthermore, we conducted a meta-analysis on marine animals, demonstrating that different acidification scenarios could alter the toxicity of several other metals, despite evidence from nonsynchronous scenarios remaining limited. Our study thus demonstrates that time and duration of ocean acidification modulate mercury toxicity in marine copepods and suggests that future studies should move beyond the oversimplified scenario of perfect synchrony in understanding multistress interaction.

Oxygen Activation in Aromatic Ring Cleaving Salicylate Dioxygenase: Detection of Reaction Intermediates with a Nitro-substituted Substrate Analog

Cupin dioxygenases such as salicylate 1,2-dioxygense (SDO) perform aromatic C-C bond scission via a 3-His motif tethered iron cofactor. Here, transient kinetics measurements are used to monitor the catalytic cycle of SDO by using a nitro-substituted substrate analog, 3-nitrogentisate. Compared to the natural substrate, the nitro group reduces the enzymatic kcat by 500-fold, thereby facilitating the detection and kinetic characterization of reaction intermediates. Sums and products of reciprocal relaxation times derived from kinetic measurements were found to be linearly dependent on O2 concentration, suggesting reversible formation of two distinct intermediates. Dioxygen binding to the metal cofactor takes place with a forward rate of 5.9×103 M-1 s-1: two orders of magnitude slower than other comparable ring-cleaving dioxygenses. Optical chromophore of the first intermediate is distinct from the in situ generated SDO Fe(III)-O2⋅- complex but closer to the enzyme-substrate precursor.

Reversible pH-Gated MXene Membranes with Ultrahigh Mono-/Divalent-Ion Selectivity

Artificial ion channel membranes hold high promise in water treatment, nanofluidics, and energy conversion, but it remains a great challenge to construct such smart membranes with both reversible ion-gating capability and desirable ion selectivity. Herein, we constructed a smart MXene-based membrane via p-phenylenediamine functionalization (MLM-PPD) with highly stable and aligned two-dimensional subnanochannels, which exhibits reversible ion-gating capability and ultrahigh metal ion selectivity similar to biological ion channels. The pH-sensitive groups within the MLM-PPD channel confers excellent reversible Mg2+-gating capability with a pH-switching ratio of up to 100. The mono/divalent metal-ion selectivity up to 1243.8 and 400.9 for K+/Mg2+ and Li+/Mg2+, respectively, outperforms other reported membranes. Theoretical calculations combined with experimental results reveal that the steric hindrance and stronger PPD-ion interactions substantially enhance the energy barrier for divalent metal ions passing through the MLM-PPD, and thus leading to ultrahigh mono/divalent metal-ion selectivity. This work provides a new strategy for developing artificial-ion channel membranes with both reversible ion-gating functionality and high-ion selectivity for various applications.

Removal and release of microplastics and other environmental pollutants during the start-up of bioretention filters treating stormwater

Untreated stormwater is a major source of microplastics, organic pollutants, metals, and nutrients in urban water courses. The aim of this study was to improve the knowledge about the start-up periods of bioretention filters. A rain garden pilot facility with 13 bioretention filters was constructed and stormwater from a highway and adjacent impervious surfaces was used for irrigation for ∼12 weeks. Selected plants (Armeria maritima, Hippophae rhamnoides, Juncus effusus, and Festuca rubra) was planted in ten filters. Stormwater percolated through the filters containing waste-to-energy bottom ash, biochar, or Sphagnum peat, mixed with sandy loam. Influent and effluent samples were taken to evaluate removal of the above-mentioned pollutants. All filters efficiently removed microplastics >10 µm, organic pollutants, and most metals. Copper leached from all filters initially but was significantly reduced in the biochar filters at the end of the period, while the other filters showed a declining trend. All filters leached nutrients initially, but concentrations decreased over time, and the biochar filters had efficiently reduced nitrogen after a few weeks. To conclude, all the filters effectively removed pollutants during the start-up period. Before being recommended for full-scale applications, the functionality of the filters after a longer period of operation should be evaluated.

A non-metal single atom nanozyme for cutting off the energy and reducing power of tumors

Enzymes are considered safe and effective therapeutic tools for various diseases. With the increasing integration of biomedicine and nanotechnology, artificial nanozymes offer advanced controllability and functionality in medical design. However, several notable gaps, such as catalytic diversity, specificity and biosafety, still exist between nanozymes and their native counterparts. Here we report a non-metal single-selenium (Se)-atom nanozyme (SeSAE), which exhibits potent nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase-mimetic activity. This novel single atom nanozyme provides a safe alternative to conventional metal-based catalysts and effectively cuts off the cellular energy and reduction equivalents through its distinctive catalytic function in tumors. In this study, we have demonstrated the substantial efficacy of SeSAE as an antitumor nanomedicine across diverse mouse models without discernible systemic adverse effects. The mechanism of the NADPH oxidase-like activity of the non-metal SeSAE was rationalized by density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, comprehensive elucidation of the biological functions, cell death pathways, and metabolic remodeling effects of the nanozyme was conducted, aiming to provide valuable insights into the development of single atom nanozymes with clinical translation potential.

In situ monitoring of cytoplasmic dopamine levels by noble metals decorated carbon fiber tips

Dopamine (DA), a catecholamine neurotransmitter, is crucial in brain signal transmission. Monitoring cytoplasmic DA levels can reflect changes in metabolic factors and provide valuable information for researching the mechanisms involved in neurodegenerative diseases. However, the in-situ detection of intracellular DA is constrained by its low contents in small-sized single cells. In this work, we report that noble metal (Au, Pt)-modified carbon fiber micro-nanoelectrodes are capable of real-time detection of DA in single cells with excellent sensitivity, selectivity, and anti-contamination capabilities. Notably, noble metals can be modified on the electrode surface through electrochemical deposition to enhance the conductivity of the electrode and the oxidation current of DA by 50 %. The nanosensors can work stably and continuously in rat adrenal pheochromocytoma cells (PC12) to monitor changes in DA levels upon K+ stimulation. The functionalized carbon fibers based nanosensors will provide excellent prospects for DA analysis in the brains of living animals.

Mg2+-promoted high-efficiency DNA conjugation on polydopamine surfaces for aptamer-based ochratoxin A detection

BACKGROUND

Surface immobilization of DNA is the foundation of a broad range of applications in biosensing and specific DNA extraction. Polydopamine (PDA) coatings can serve as intermediate layers to immobilize amino- or thiol-labelled molecules, including DNA, onto various materials through Michael addition and/or Schiff base reactions. However, the conjugation efficiency is limited by electrostatic repulsion between negatively charged DNA and PDA. Recently, it has been reported that polyvalent metal ions (such as Mg2+ and Ca2+) can mediate the adsorption of DNA on PDA surfaces. Inspired by this, in this work we aimed to exploit polyvalent metal ions to facilitate the conjugation of DNA on PDA.

RESULTS

Mg2+ was used to promote the conjugation of amino-terminated DNA complementary to ochratoxin A (OTA) aptamer (cDNA-NH2) on PDA-coated magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@PDA). After the reaction, the unlinked cDNA-NH2 adsorbed on Fe3O4@PDA mediated by Mg2+ was removed with EDTA. In the presence of 20 mM Mg2+, the amount of covalently linked cDNA-NH2 increased approximately 11-fold compared to that in the absence of Mg2+. The resulting Fe3O4@PDA@cDNA conjugates exhibited superior hybridization capacity towards OTA aptamers, minimal nonspecific adsorption, and excellent chemical stability. The conjugates combined with fluorophore-labelled aptamers were employed for OTA detection, achieving a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.77 ng mL-1. To demonstrate versatility, this conjugation method was extended to Ca2+-promoted conjugation of cDNA-NH2 on Fe3O4@PDA nanoparticles and Mg2+-promoted conjugation of cDNA-NH2 on PDA-coated 96-well plates.

SIGNIFICANCE

The conjugation efficiency of DNA on PDA was significantly improved with the assistance of polyvalent metal ions (Mg2+ and Ca2+), providing a facile and efficient method for DNA immobilization. Due to the substrate-independent adhesion property of PDA, this method demonstrates versatility in DNA surface modification and holds great potential for applications in target extraction, biosensing, and other fields.

Multifaceted Applications of Luminescent Metalloporphyrin Derivatives: Fluorescence Turn-On Sensing of Nicotine and Antimicrobial Activity

In this study, we designed and synthesized metalloporphyrin derivatives (with Ni and Zn) specifically intended for the fluorescence detection of nicotine in aqueous solutions. Our results showcased a notable selectivity for nicotine over other naturally occurring food toxins, exhibiting an exceptional sensitivity with a limit of detection as low as 7.2 nM. Through mechanistic investigations (1H NMR, FT-IR, etc.), we elucidated the binding mechanism, revealing the specific interaction between the pyridine ring of nicotine and the metal center, while the N atom pyrrolidine unit engaged in the hydrogen bonding with the side chain of the porphyrin ring. Notably, we observed that the nature of the metal center dictated the extent of interaction with nicotine; particularly, Zn-porphyrin demonstrated a superior response compared to Ni-porphyrin. Furthermore, we performed the quantitative estimation of nicotine in commercially available tobacco products. Additionally, we conducted the antibacterial (Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli) and antifungal (Candida albicans) activities of the porphyrin derivatives.

Bacteria populating freshly appeared supraglacial lake possess metals and antibiotic-resistant genes

Antibiotic resistance (AR) has been extensively studied in natural habitats and clinical applications. AR is mainly reported with the use and misuse of antibiotics; however, little is known about its presence in antibiotic-free remote supraglacial lake environments. This study evaluated bacterial strains isolated from supraglacial lake debris and meltwater in Dook Pal Glacier, northern Pakistan, for antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) and metal-tolerant genes (MTGs) using conventional PCR. Several distinct ARGs were reported in the bacterial strains isolated from lake debris (92.5%) and meltwater (100%). In lake debris, 57.5% of isolates harbored the blaTEM gene, whereas 58.3% of isolates in meltwater possessed blaTEM and qnrA each. Among the ARGs, qnrA was dominant in debris isolates (19%), whereas in meltwater isolates, qnrA (15.2%) and blaTEM (15.2%) were dominant. ARGs were widely distributed among the bacterial isolates and different bacteria shared similar types of ARGs. Relatively greater number of ARGs were reported in Gram-negative bacterial strains. In addition, 92.5% of bacterial isolates from lake debris and 83.3% of isolates from meltwater harbored MTGs. Gene copA was dominant in meltwater isolates (50%), whereas czcA was greater in debris bacterial isolates (45%). Among the MTGs, czcA (18.75%) was dominant in debris strains, whereas copA (26.0%) was greater in meltwater isolates. This presents the co-occurrence and co-selection of MTGs and ARGs in a freshly appeared supraglacial lake. The same ARGs and MTGs were present in different bacteria, exhibiting horizontal gene transfer (HGT). Both positive and negative correlations were determined between ARGs and MTGs. The research provides insights into the existence of MTGs and ARGs in bacterial strains isolated from remote supraglacial lake environments, signifying the need for a more detailed study of bacteria harboring ARGs and MTGs in supraglacial lakes.

Metabolomics perspectives into the co-exposure effect of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and metals on renal function: A meet-in-the-middle approach

Studies on the dose effects of kidney impairment and metabolomes in co-exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and metals are limited. We aimed to identify overall associations and metabolic perturbations in 130 participants (53 petrochemical workers and 77 controls) exposed to a PAHs-metals mixture in Southern China. The urinary 7 hydroxylated PAHs and 15 metal(loid)s were determined, and serum creatinine, beta-2 microglobulin, and estimated glomerular filtration rate were health outcomes. The liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based method was applied to serum metabolomics. Generalized weighted quantile sum (gWQS) regressions were used to estimate the overall dose-response relationships, and pathway analysis, "meet-in-the-middle" approach, and mediation effect analyses were conducted to identify potential metabolites and biological mechanisms linking exposure with nephrotoxic effects. Our results indicated that renal function reduction was associated with a PAHs-metals mixture in a dose-dependent manner, and 1-hydroxynaphthalene and copper were the most predominant contributors among the two families of pollutants. Furthermore, the metabolic disruptions associated with the early onset of kidney impairment induced by the combination of PAHs and metals encompassed pathways such as phenylalanine-tyrosine-tryptophan biosynthesis, phenylalanine metabolism, and alpha-linolenic acid metabolism. In addition, the specifically identified metabolites demonstrated excellent potential as bridging biomarkers connecting the reduction in renal function with the mixture of PAHs and metals. These findings shed light on understanding the overall associations and metabolic mechanism of nephrotoxic effects of co-exposure to PAHs and metals.

Recovery of aluminum from plastic packages containing aluminum by gasification

The standing pouch, a packaging material made of multiple layers of plastic and metal, presents a significant challenge for full recycling. Gasification shows promise as a method to recover aluminum from this type of waste and convert it into energy. This study aims to evaluate the efficiency of gasification in treating aluminum-containing plastic packages, and recovering aluminum while identifying the optimal combinations of temperature and equivalence ratio (ER) to achieve the best outcomes. The study achieved a conversion rate of 43.06 wt% to 69.42 wt% of the original waste mass into syngas, with aluminum recovery rates ranging from 35.2 % to 65.3 %. Temperature and ER alterations affected the product distribution, aluminum recovery rate, and aluminum partitioning in the products. The results indicated that the combination of 700 °C, ER = 0.4 would provide the largest amount of syngas about 69.42 %, which is the main product of the gasification process, and therefore, this combination is the most optimal for syngas-yielding purposes. Under the reclaiming aluminum is more prioritized, the combination of 800 °C, ER = 0.6 would be the most optimal condition, the majority of Al in fuel was found in char and fly ash were 67.5 % and 4.81 %, respectively. The study focused on the partitioning of aluminum during the gasification process, which was observed to mainly exist in the form of Al2O3(s), with gaseous species including AlCl3(g), AlH(g), and Al2O(g) due to their medium volatility. As the ER increased, the amount of O2 also increased, leading to more Al2O3(s) formation. In conclusion, this research provides a foundation for further exploration of gasification as a means of energy conversion and metal recovery.

Pushing Boundaries: What's Next in Metal-Free C-H Functionalization for Sulfenylation?

The synthesis of thioether derivatives has been explored widely due to the potential application of these derivatives in medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical industry and material chemistry. Within this context, there has been an increasing demand for the environmentally benign construction of C-S bonds via C-H functionalization under metal-free conditions. In the present article, we highlight recent developments in metal-free sulfenylation that have occurred in the past three years. The synthesis of organosulfur compounds via a metal-free approach using a variety of sulfur sources, including thiophenols, disulfides, sulfonyl hydrazides, sulfonyl chlorides, elemental sulfur and sulfinates, is discussed. Non-conventional strategies, which refer to the development of thioether derivatives under visible light and electrochemically mediated conditions, are also discussed. The key advantages of the reviewed methodologies include broad substrate scope and high reaction yields under environmentally benign conditions. This comprehensive review will provide chemists with a synthetic tool that will facilitate further development in this field.

Photoelectrochemical sensing of isoniazid and streptomycin based on metal Bi-doped BiOI microspheres grown on book-shape layers of Ti3C2 heterostructures

Isoniazid and streptomycin are vital drugs for treating tuberculosis, which are utilized as efficient anti-tuberculosis agents. This paper presents a novel visible-light-driven composite photocatalyst Ti3C2/Bi/BiOI, which was built from Ti3C2 nanosheets and Bi/BiOI microspheres. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors based on Ti3C2/Bi/BiOI were synthesized for isoniazid identification, which showed a linear concentration range of 0.1-125 μM with a detection limit of 0.05 μM (S/N = 3). Moreover, we designed a PEC aptasensors based on aptamer/Ti3C2/Bi/BiOI to detect streptomycin in 0.1 M PBS covering the electron donor isoniazid, because the isoniazid consumes photogenerated holes thus increasing the photocurrent effectively and preventing photogenerated electron-hole pairs from being recombined. Furthermore, PEC aptasensors based on aptamer/Ti3C2/Bi/BiOI were synthesized for streptomycin identification, which exhibited a linear concentration range of 0.01-1000 nM with a detection limit of 2.3 × 10-3 nM (S/N = 3), and are well stable in streptomycin sensing.

Detection and recognition of metal surface corrosion based on CBG-YOLOv5s

The automatic detection of the degree of surface corrosion on metal structures is of significant importance for assessing structural damage and safety. To effectively identify the corrosion status on the surface of coastal metal facilities, this study proposed a CBG-YOLOv5s model for metal surface corrosion detection, based on the YOLOv5s model. Firstly, we integrated the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) into the C3 module and developed the C3CBAM module. This module effectively enhanced the channel and spatial attention capabilities of the feature map, thereby improving the feature representation. Second, we introduced a multi-scale feature fusion concept in the feature fusion part of the model and added a small target detection layer to improve small target detection. Finally, we designed a lighter C3Ghost module, which reduced the number of parameters and the computational load of the model, thereby improving the running speed of the model. In addition, to verify the effectiveness of our method, we constructed a dataset containing 6000 typical images of metal surface corrosion and conducted extensive experiments on this dataset. The results showed that compared to the YOLOv5s model and several other commonly used object detection models, our method achieved superior performance in terms of detection accuracy and speed.

Integrating Data Across Multiple Sites in the Northeastern United States to Examine Associations Between a Prenatal Metal Mixture and Child Cognition

We applied a novel hierarchical Bayesian weighted quantile sum (HBWQS) regression to combine data across 3 study sites to examine associations between prenatal exposure to metals and cognitive functioning in childhood. Data from 326 mother-child dyads enrolled in an ongoing cohort study, the Programming of Intergenerational Stress Mechanisms (PRISM) Study, based in New York, New York (recruitment in 2013-2020) and Boston, Massachusetts (recruitment 2011-2013), and the First Thousand Days of Life (FTDL) cohort study (recruitment 2012-2019), based in northern Virginia, were used. Arsenic, cadmium, manganese, lead, and antimony were measured in urine collected during pregnancy. Cognitive functioning was assessed in children aged 3-11 years using the National Institutes of Health Toolbox Cognition Battery. The HBWQS regression showed a negative association between the urinary metal mixture and the Cognition Early Childhood Composite Score in the PRISM New York City (β = -3.67, 95% credible interval (CrI): -7.61, -0.01) and FTDL (β = -3.76, 95% CrI: -7.66, -0.24) samples, with a similar trend in the PRISM Boston sample (β = -3.24, 95% CrI: -6.77, 0.144). We did not detect these associations in traditionally pooled models. HBWQS regression allowed us to account for site heterogeneity and detect associations between prenatal metal-mixture exposure and cognitive outcomes in childhood. Given the ubiquity of metals exposure, interventions aimed at reducing prenatal exposure may improve cognitive outcomes in children. "Covalent-Disassembly"-Based Approaches For Sensing Applications

The detection of analytes with small molecular probes is crucial for the analysis and understanding of chemical, medicinal, environmental and biological situations as well as processes. Classic detection approaches rely on the concept of molecular recognition and bond formation reactions. Bond breakage reactions have been less explored in similar contexts. This concept article introduces metal-salen and metal-imine complexes as "covalent-disassembly"-based (DB)-probes for detecting polyoxophosphates, thiols, amino acids, HCN and changes in pH. It discusses the roles, importance and combinations of structurally functionalized molecular building blocks in the construction of DB-probes. Applications of optimized DB-probes for analyte detection in live cells and foodstuff are also discussed. Furthermore, the mechanism of the disassembly of a Fe(III)-salen probe upon pyrophosphate binding is presented. Extraordinary selectivity for this analyte was achieved by a multistep disassembly sequence including an unprecedented structural change of the metal complex (i. e. "induced-fit" principle). Design principles of probes for sensing applications following the "covalent-disassembly" approach are summarized, which will help improving current systems, but will also facilitate the development of new DB-probes for challenging analytic targets.

Negative Electron Transfer Collision-Induced Dissociation of G-Quadruplexes: Uncovering the Guanine Radical Anion Loss Pathway

G-quadruplex (G4) DNA can form highly stable secondary structures in the presence of metal cations, and research has shown its potential as a transcriptional regulator for oncogenes in the human genome. In order to explore the interactions of DNA with metal cations using mass spectrometry, employing complementary fragmentation methods can enhance structural information. This study explores the use of ion-ion reactions for sequential negative electron transfer collision-induced dissociation (nET-CID) as a complement to traditional ion-trap CID (IT-CID). The resulting nET-CID data for G4 anions with and without metal cations show an increase in fragment ion type diversity and yield of structurally informative ions relative to IT-CID. The nET-CID yields greater sequence coverage by virtue of fragmentation at the 3'-side of thymine residues, which is lacking with IT-CID. Potassium adductions to backbone fragments in IT-CID and nET-CID spectra were nearly identical. Of note is a prominent fragment resulting from a loss of a 149 Da anion seen in nET-CID of large, G-rich sequences, proposed to be radical anion guanine loss. Neutral loss of neutral guanine (151 Da) and deprotonated nucleobase loss (150 Da) have been previously reported, but this is the first report of radical anion guanine loss (149 Da). Confirmation of the identity of the 149 Da anion results from the examination of the homonucleobase sequence 5'-GGGGGGGG-3'. Loss of a charged adenine radical anion at much lower relative abundance was also noted for the sequence 5'-AAAAAAAA-3'. DFT modeling indicates that the loss of a nucleobase as a radical anion from odd-electron nucleic acid anions is a thermodynamically favorable fragmentation pathway for G.

Design, Synthesis, and Biological Evaluation of Ferulic Acid Template-Based Novel Multifunctional Ligands Targeting NLRP3 Inflammasome for the Management of Alzheimer's Disease

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, which arises due to low levels of acetyl and butyrylcholines, an increase in oxidative stress, inflammation, metal dyshomeostasis, Aβ and tau aggregations. The currently available drugs for AD treatment can provide only symptomatic relief without interfering with pathological hallmarks of the disease. In our ongoing efforts to develop naturally inspired novel multifunctional molecules for AD, systematic SAR studies on EJMC-4e were caried out to improve its multifunctional properties. The rigorous medicinal efforts led to the development of 12o, which displayed a 15-fold enhancement in antioxidant properties and a 2-fold increase in the activity against AChE and BChE over EJMC-4e. Molecular docking and dynamics studies revealed the binding sites and stability of the complex of 12o with AChE and BChE. The PAMPA-BBB assay clearly demonstrated that 12o can easily cross the blood-brain barrier. Interestingly, 12o also expresses promising metal chelation activity, while EJMC-4e was found to be devoid of this property. Further, 12o inhibited metal-induced or self Aβ1-42 aggregation. Observing the neuroprotection ability of 12o against H2O2-induced oxidative stress in the PC-12 cell line is noteworthy. Furthermore, 12o also inhibited NLRP3 inflammasome activation and attenuated mitochondrial-induced ROS and MMP damage caused by LPS and ATP in HMC-3 cells. In addition, 12o is able to effectively reduce mitochondrial and cellular oxidative stress in the AD Drosophila model. Finally, 12o could reverse memory impairment in the scopolamine-induced AD mice model, as evident through in vivo and ex vivo studies. These findings suggest that this compound may act as a promising candidate for further improvement in the management of AD.

Screening, separation and identification of metal-chelating peptides for nutritional, cosmetics and pharmaceutical applications

Metal-chelating peptides, which form metal-peptide coordination complexes with various metal ions, can be used as biofunctional ingredients notably to enhance human health and prevent diseases. This review aims to discuss recent insights into food-derived metal-chelating peptides, the strategies set up for their discovery, their study, and identification. After understanding the overall properties of metal-chelating peptides, their production from food-derived protein sources and their potential applications will be discussed, particularly in nutritional, cosmetics and pharmaceutical fields. In addition, the review provides an overview of the last decades of progress in discovering food-derived metal-chelating peptides, addressing several screening, separation and identification methodologies. Furthermore, it emphasizes the methods used to assess peptide-metal interaction, allowing for better understanding of chemical and thermodynamic parameters associated with the formation of peptide-metal coordination complexes, as well as the specific amino acid residues that play important roles in the metal ion coordination.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa transcriptome analysis of metal restriction in ex vivo cystic fibrosis sputum

Chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa lung infections are a feature of cystic fibrosis (CF) that many patients experience even with the advent of highly effective modulator therapies. Identifying factors that impact P. aeruginosa in the CF lung could yield novel strategies to eradicate infection or otherwise improve outcomes. To complement published P. aeruginosa studies using laboratory models or RNA isolated from sputum, we analyzed transcripts of strain PAO1 after incubation in sputum from different CF donors prior to RNA extraction. We compared PAO1 gene expression in this "spike-in" sputum model to that for P. aeruginosa grown in synthetic cystic fibrosis sputum medium to determine key genes, which are among the most differentially expressed or most highly expressed. Using the key genes, gene sets with correlated expression were determined using the gene expression analysis tool eADAGE. Gene sets were used to analyze the activity of specific pathways in P. aeruginosa grown in sputum from different individuals. Gene sets that we found to be more active in sputum showed similar activation in published data that included P. aeruginosa RNA isolated from sputum relative to corresponding in vitro reference cultures. In the ex vivo samples, P. aeruginosa had increased levels of genes related to zinc and iron acquisition which were suppressed by metal amendment of sputum. We also found a significant correlation between expression of the H1-type VI secretion system and CFTR corrector use by the sputum donor. An ex vivo sputum model or synthetic sputum medium formulation that imposes metal restriction may enhance future CF-related studies.IMPORTANCEIdentifying the gene expression programs used by Pseudomonas aeruginosa to colonize the lungs of people with cystic fibrosis (CF) will illuminate new therapeutic strategies. To capture these transcriptional programs, we cultured the common P. aeruginosa laboratory strain PAO1 in expectorated sputum from CF patient donors. Through bioinformatic analysis, we defined sets of genes that are more transcriptionally active in real CF sputum compared to a synthetic cystic fibrosis sputum medium. Many of the most differentially active gene sets contained genes related to metal acquisition, suggesting that these gene sets play an active role in scavenging for metals in the CF lung environment which may be inadequately represented in some models. Future studies of P. aeruginosa transcript abundance in CF may benefit from the use of an expectorated sputum model or media supplemented with factors that induce metal restriction.

Enantioselective recognition, synthesis, and separation of pharmaceutical compounds at chiral metallic surfaces

The development of new pharmaceutical compounds is challenging because most of them are based on enantiopure chiral molecules, which exhibit unique properties for therapy. However, the synthesis of pharmaceutical compounds in the absence of a chiral environment naturally leads to a racemic mixture. Thus, to control their synthesis, an asymmetric environment is required, and chiral homogeneous catalysts are typically used to synthesize enantiopure pharmaceutical compounds (EPC). Nevertheless, homogeneous catalysts are difficult to recover after the reaction, generating additional problems and costs in practical processes. Thus, the development of chiral heterogeneous catalysts is a timely topic. In a more general context, such chiral materials cannot only be used for synthesis, but also to recognize and separate enantiomers. In the frame of these different challenges, we give in this review a short introduction to strategies to extrinsically and intrinsically modify heterogeneous metal matrixes for the enantioselective synthesis, recognition, and separation of chiral pharmaceutical compounds.

Facile fabrication of a novel, photodetachable salecan-based hydrogel dressing with self-healing, injectable, and antibacterial properties based on metal coordination

Achieving the controllable detachment of polysaccharide-based wound dressings is challenging. In this study, a novel, photodetachable salecan-based hydrogel dressing with injectable, self-healing, antibacterial, and wound healing properties was developed using a green and facile approach. A salecan hydrogel with a uniform porous structure and water content of 90.4 % was prepared by simply mixing salecan and an Fe3+-citric acid complexing solution in an acidic D-(+)-glucono-1,5-lactone environment. Metal coordinate interactions were formed between the released Fe3+ ions and carboxyl groups on the salecan polysaccharide, inducing homogeneous gelation. Benefiting from this dynamic and reversible crosslinking, the salecan hydrogel exhibited self-healing and injectable behavior, facilitating the formation of the desired shapes in situ. The exposure of Fe3+-citric acid to UV light (365 nm) resulted in the reduction of Fe3+ to Fe2+ through photochemical reactions, enabling phototriggered detachment. Moreover, the hydrogel exhibited excellent biocompatibility and satisfactory antibacterial efficacy against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus of 72.5 % and 85.3 %, respectively. The adhesive strength of the salecan hydrogel to porcine skin was 1.06 ± 0.12 kPa. In vivo wound healing experiments further highlighted the advantages of the prepared hydrogel in alleviating the degree of wound inflammation and promoting tissue regeneration within 12 days.

Well-defined star (co)polypeptides via a fast, efficient, and metal-free strategy

Polypeptides, especially star polypeptides, as a unique kind of biological macromolecules have broad applications in biomedical fields such as drug release, gene delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicines due to their close structural similarity to naturally occurring peptides and proteins, biocompatibility, and amino acid functionality. However, the synthesis of star polypeptide mainly relies on the conventional primary amine-initiated ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of N-carboxyanhydrides (NCA) and suffers from low polymerization activity and limited controllability. This study proposes a fast, efficient and metal-free strategy to access star (co)polypeptides by combining the Michael reaction between acrylates and secondary aminoalcohols with the hydrogen-bonding organocatalytic ROP of NCA. This approach enables the preparation of a library of star (co)polypeptides with predesigned molecular weights, narrow molecular weight distributions, tunable arm number, and arm compositions. Importantly, this method exhibits high activity and selectivity at room temperature, making it both practical and versatile in synthesis applications.

Photocatalysis air purification systems for coronavirus removal: Current technologies and future trends

Air pollution causes extreme toxicological repercussions for human health and ecology. The management of airborne bacteria and viruses has become an essential goal of air quality control. Existing pathogens in the air, including bacteria, archaea, viruses, and fungi, can have severe effects on human health. The photocatalysis process is one of the favorable approaches for eliminating them. The oxidative nature of semiconductor-based photocatalysts can be used to fight viral activation as a green, sustainable, and promising approach with significant promise for environmental clean-up. The photocatalysts show wonderful performance under moderate conditions while generating negligible by-products. Airborne viruses can be inactivated by various photocatalytic processes, such as chemical oxidation, toxicity due to the metal ions released from photocatalysts composed of metals, and morphological damage to viruses. This review paper provides a thorough and evaluative analysis of current information on using photocatalytic oxidation to deactivate viruses.

Towards an optimal design of a functionally graded porous uncemented acetabular component using genetic algorithm

Generation of polyethylene wear debris and peri‑prosthetic bone resorption have been identified as potential causes of acetabular component loosening in Total Hip Arthroplasty. This study was aimed at optimization of a functionally graded porous acetabular component to minimize peri‑prosthetic bone resorption and polyethylene liner wear. Porosity levels (porosity values at acetabular rim, and dome) and functional gradation exponents (radial and polar) were considered as the design parameters. The relationship between porosity and elastic properties were obtained from numerical homogenization. The multi-objective optimization was carried out using a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm integrated with finite element analysis of the hemipelvises subject to various loading conditions of common daily activities. The optimal functionally graded porous designs (OFGPs -1, -2, -3, -4, -5) exhibited less strain-shielding in cancellous bone compared to solid metal-backing. Maximum bone-implant interfacial micromotions (63-68 μm) for OFGPs were found to be close to that of solid metal-backing (66 μm), which might facilitate bone ingrowth. However, OFGPs exhibited an increase in volumetric wear (3-10 %) compared to solid metal-backing. The objective functions were found to be more sensitive to changes in polar gradation exponent than radial gradation exponent, based on the Sobol' method. Considering the common failure mechanisms, OFGP-1, having highly porous acetabular rim and less porous dome, appears to be a better alternative to the solid metal-backing.

Life cycle assessment of carbon footprint in dual-phase automotive strip steel production

As the demand for automotive materials grows more stringent in environmental considerations, it becomes imperative to conduct thorough environmental impact assessments of dual-phase automotive strip steel (DP steel). However, the absence of detailed and comparable studies has left the carbon footprint of DP steel and its sources largely unknown. This study addresses this gap by establishing a cradle-to-gate life cycle model for DP steel, encompassing on-site production, energy systems, and upstream processes. The analysis identifies and scrutinizes key factors influencing the carbon footprint, with a focus on upstream mining, transportation, and on-site production processes. The results indicate that the carbon footprint of DP steel is 2.721 kgCO2-eq/kgDP, with on-site processes contributing significantly at 88.1%. Sensitivity analysis is employed to assess the impact of changes in resource structure, on-site energy, CO2 emission factors, and byproduct recovery on the carbon footprint. Proposals for mitigating carbon emissions in DP steel production include enhancing process gas recovery, transitioning to cleaner energy sources, and reducing the hot metal-to-steel ratio. These findings offer valuable insights for steering steel production towards environmentally sustainable practices.

Piezoelectric catalytic driven advanced oxidation process using two-dimensional metal dichalcogenides for wastewater pollutants remediation

The public and society have increasingly recognized numerous grave environmental issues, including water pollution, attributed to the rapid expansion of industrialization and agriculture. Renewable energy-driven catalytic advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) represent a green, sustainable, and environmentally friendly approach to meet the demands of environmental remediation. In this context, 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) piezoelectric materials, with their non-centrosymmetric crystal structure, exhibit unique features. They create dipole polarization, inducing a built-in electric field that generates polarized holes and electrons and triggers redox reactions, thereby facilitating the generation of reactive oxygen species for wastewater pollutant remediation. A broad spectrum of 2D TMDCs piezoelectric materials have been explored in self-integrated Fenton-like processes and persulfate activation processes. These materials offer a more simplistic and practical method than traditional approaches. Consequently, this review highlights recent advancements in 2D TMDCs piezoelectric catalysts and their roles in wastewater pollutant remediation through piezocatalytic-driven AOPs, such as Fenton-like processes and sulfate radicals-based oxidation processes.

Study on mechanism of removal of sudden Tetracycline by compound modified biological sand filtration process

The removal of tetracycline from the sewage plant effluents through advanced treatment methods is key to controlling tetracycline levels in the water environment. In this study, modified quartz sands (QS) were used in a biological sand filter to remove tetracycline. The modified QS, with different surface characteristics, were prepared using glass etching technology combined with subsequent chemical modification methods, including hydroxylation treatment, metal ion modification, and amino modification. The adsorption efficiency of hydroxylated QS was higher than that of metal ion modified and amino modified QS, with adsorption efficiencies of 20.4331 mg/kg, 12.8736 mg/kg, and 10.1737 mg/kg, respectively. Results indicated that QS primarily reduce tetracycline through adsorption. Adsorption on ordinary QS fit the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, while adsorption on other modified QS and biofilm-coated QS fit the pseudo-second-order kinetics model. Biodegradation was identified as another mechanism for tetracycline reduction, which fit the zero-order kinetic model. Pseudomonas alcaligenes and unclassified Pseudomonas accounted for 96.6% of the total tetracycline-degrading bacteria. This study elucidates the effectiveness and mechanisms of five types of QS in treating tetracycline from sewage plant effluents. It provides a novel method for tetracycline reduction in real-world wastewater scenarios.

Nitrogen-doped metal-free granular activated carbons as economical and easily separable catalysts for peroxymonosulfate and hydrogen peroxide activation to degrade bisphenol A

The fabrication of low-cost, highly efficient, environmentally friendly, and easily separable metal-free heterogeneous catalysts for environmental remediation remains a challenge. In this study, granular nitrogen-doped highly developed porous carbons with a particle size of 0.25-0.30 mm were prepared by preoxidation and subsequent NH3 modification of a commercially available coconut-based activated carbon, and used to activate peroxymonosulphate (KHSO5) or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to degrade bisphenol A (BPA). The nitrogen-doped carbon (ACON-950) prepared by NH3 modification at 950 °C, with the addition of only 0.15 g/L could remove 100% of 50 mg/L BPA in 150 min, and more than 90% of the removed BPA was due to degradation. The removal rates of total organic carbon of ACON-950/KHSO5 and ACON-950/H2O2 systems reached 60.4% and 66.2% respectively, indicating the excellent catalytic activity of ACON-950. The reaction rate constant was significantly positively correlated with the absolute content of pyridinic N (N-6) and graphitic N (N-Q) and negatively and weakly positively correlated with pyrrolic N (N-5) and defects. Quenching experiments combined with electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrated that singlet oxygen was the dominant reactive oxidative species for BPA degradation. ACON-950 was characterized before and after the degradation reaction using N2 adsorption-desorption analyzer, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results confirmed the prominent contribution of both the N-6 and N-Q to the catalytic performance of nitrogen-doped carbons. The reusability of ACON-950 and its application in actual water bodies further demonstrated its remarkable potential for the remediation of organic pollutants in wastewater.

Monthly variation of fatty acids, lipid quality index and metal content of Pontastacus leptodactylus (Eschscholtz, 1823) in Atikhisar Dam Lake (Çanakkale, Türkiye)

This study aims to investigate the metal content, fatty acid composition, lipid quality, and potential health risks of Pontastacus leptodactylus crayfish inhabiting Atikhisar Dam Lake. The research covers a 12-month period and includes both male and female individuals. The study investigated the metal content of crayfish specimens. In female individuals, the metal concentrations were ranked as Fe > Zn > Al > Cu > Mn > Se > As > Hg > Cd > Pb, while in male individuals, the ranking was Fe > Al > Zn > Cu > Mn > Se > As > Hg > Pb > Cd. The results demonstrate that Atherogenicity Index (AI) values for both genders range between 0.21 and 0.31, and Thrombogenicity Index (TI) values fall within 0.14 and 0.20. This indicates that crayfish meat is composed of healthy and high-quality fatty acids. In male individuals, omega-3 values range from 25.28 ± 0.380% to 28.34 ± 0.430%, and in female individuals, they vary from 22.98 ± 0.195% to 28.73 ± 0.871%. These findings underscore the absence of significant health risks associated with mercury levels in crayfish meat. Monthly meal calculations reveal that consuming female crayfish at an average of 4.35 servings per month for adults and 2.24 servings per month for children presents no health hazards. Similarly, the consumption of crayfish meat at an average of 5.29 servings per month for adult males and 2.72 servings per month for male children is deemed safe for health. Based on these results, the lipid quality of both male and female individuals from this species is found to be beneficial, as confirmed by risk-benefit assessments.

High-efficiency recovery of valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries: Optimization of SO2 pressure leaching and selective extraction of trace impurities

The recovery of valuable metals from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is crucial for environmental protection and resource optimization. In the traditional recovery process of spent LIBs, the leaching of high-valence metals has the problems of high cost and limited reagent utilization, and some valuable metals are lost in the subsequent purification process of the leaching solution. To reduce the cost of reagents, this study proposes the use of low-cost SO2 as a reagent combined with pressure leaching to efficiently recover high-valence metals from delithiated materials of spent LIBs, while selective solvent extraction is used to remove trace impurities in the leaching solution to avoid the loss of valuable metals. Experimental results demonstrated that by optimizing the conditions to 0.25 MPa SO2 partial pressure and 60 min reaction time at 70 °C, the leaching efficiencies for Ni, Co, and Mn reached 99.6%, 99.3%, and 99.6%, respectively. The kinetic study indicated that the leaching process was diffusion-controlled. Furthermore, the delithiated materials were used to completely utilize the residual SO2 in the solution to obtain a high concentration Ni-Co-Mn rich solution. Subsequently, Fe and Al impurities were deeply removed through a synergistic extraction of Di-2-ethylhexyl phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and tributyl phosphate (TBP) without loss of valuable metals, achieving a high-purity Ni-Co-Mn solution. The process developed based on this work has the characteristics of environmental friendliness, high valuable metal recovery, and high product purity, providing a reference technical method for the synergistic treatment of waste SO2 flue gas with spent LIBs and the deep purification of impurities in spent LIBs.

Advanced degradation of organic pollutants using sonophotocatalytic peroxymonosulfate activation with CoFe2O4/Cu- and Ce-doped SnO2 composites

The rampant upsurge of organic pollutants in aqueous media has become one of the major concerns nowadays. Finding non-specific catalysts that can target a wide range of organic pollutants is a key challenge. Eco-friendly oxidative radicals, such as promoted by peroxymonosulfate (PMS), are necessary for efficient water decontamination. We propose a multicomponent composite catalyst for activating PMS using a dual strategy of sonophotocatalysis. The composite integrates cobalt ferrite and Cu- or Ce-doped SnO2, with the at. % of doping metal and the mixture ratio carefully balanced. The top-performing architectures were able to decompose rhodamine B (20 ppm), a representative pollutant, in under 3 min and achieve over 70% mineralization in just 5 min. The synthesized nanocomposites demonstrated exceptional sonophotocatalytic performance, even when treating complex and diverse multipollutant solutions (80 ppm), achieving over 75% mineralization after 150 min. Considering their high stability and reusability, the proposed CoFe2O4/Cu- and Ce-doped SnO2 materials are among the state-of-the-art heterogeneous catalysts for mineralizing organic pollutants through PMS activation.

Microwave promoted graft copolymerization of poly(ethylacrylate) onto k-carrageenan for removal of Cd and Ni from aqueous solution

Microwave promoted graft copolymerization of poly (ethyl acrylate) onto kappa-carrageenan in presence of a redox pair (ascorbic acid and potassium persulfate) led to the formation of a novel copolymer hydrogel, kappa-carrageenan-graft-poly (ethylacrylate). By varying the reaction conditions such as the microwave power, reaction time, concentration of kappa-carrageenan, ascorbic acid and persulfate, copolymers of highest percentage grafting was obtained and characterized by FT-IR, SEM, TGA and XRD. The copolymer was evaluated as an adsorbent for the adsorption of Ni(II) and Cd(II). Various adsorption parameters such as contact time, pH, initial metal ion concentration, temperature, electrolyte strength and adsorbent dosage were varied to obtain the optimum conditions for the adsorption. The adsorption data for Cd(II), fitted better for Langmuir and Ni(II), fitted much better for Freundlich adsorption isotherm model. Maximum adsorption obtained for cadmium ions and nickel ions was 308.6 mg/g-1 and 305.8 mg/g-1 respectively. The adsorption of both metal ions followed pseudo second order kinetic model. The positive ΔH values endorsed the adsorption process to be endothermic in nature. The negative values of ΔG indicate the spontaneity of the adsorption process while the positive ΔS values showed that the adsorption of metal ions proceeded with increased randomness at the surface of the copolymer. High recovery percentage of the metal ions from the adsorbent indicates that the copolymer can be used for more adsorption cycles.

Highly selective ion precipitation flotation for ternary Co-Zn-Mn separation: Stepwise chelation capture of Co and Zn from simulated zinc hydrometallurgy wastewater

Ion precipitation flotation technology was demonstrated to be an efficient method for the separation of valuable metals from low-concentration solution. However, the selective separation of three metals from mixing solution is a great challenge, and highly selective reagents are the key to polymetallic separation. In this work, stepwise separation of Co and Zn from the simulated zinc hydrometallurgy wastewater containing ternary Co-Zn-Mn metals by ion precipitation flotation process was proposed. It's demonstrated that organic reagents of 1-nitroso-2-naphthol (NN) and sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate (SDDC) had excellent selectivity for the capture of Co and Zn to form respective precipitate from wastewaters via the chelation reactions. After precipitation, dodecylpyridinium chloride (DPC) and tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) were chosen as surfactants for the separation of Co and Zn sediments from the solution via the flotation process. The effects of solution pH, molar ratio, reaction temperature, and reaction time on the selective precipitation efficiencies of Co and Zn as well as the effects of surfactant dosage and flotation gas velocity on the flotation separation efficiencies were systematically investigated. It's demonstrated that the comprehensive recovery rates of Co, Mn, and Zn reach 98%, 90%, and 99%, respectively. After separation, oxidation calcination of the foam products was conducted to prepare high-purity Co3O4 and ZnO nanoparticles in which the organic matters were burnt out with gas emissions. The stepwise chelation capture mechanisms of Co and Zn by highly selective precipitation reagents were minutely discussed. It's demonstrated that the proposed selective stepwise precipitation and flotation method is suitable for recovery of critical metal ions from low-concentration polymetallic wastewaters.

Machine learning-based models to predict aquatic ecological risk for engineered nanoparticles: using hazard concentration for 5% of species as an endpoint

Assessment and prediction for the ecotoxicity of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) at the community or ecosystem levels represents a critical step toward a comprehensive understanding of the ecological risks of ENPs. Current studies on predicting the ecotoxicity of ENPs primarily focus on the cellular and individual levels, with limited exploration at the community or ecosystem levels. Herein, we present the first of the reports for the direct prediction of aquatic ecological risk for ENPs at the community level using machine learning (ML) approaches in the field of computational toxicology. Specifically, we extensively collected the threshold concentrations of twelve ENPs including metal- and carbon-based nanoparticles for aquatic species, i.e., hazardous concentrations at which 5% of species are harmed (HC5), established by a species sensitivity distribution. Afterwards, we used eight supervised ML methods including Adaboost, artificial neural network, C4.5 decision tree, K-nearest neighbor, logistic regression, Naive Bayes, random forest, and support vector machine to develop nine classification models and four regression models, respectively, for the qualitative and quantitative prediction of HC5. The evaluation of model performance yielded the internal validation accuracy of all classification models ranging from 71.4 to 100%, and the determination coefficient of regression models ranging from 0.702 to 0.999, indicating that the developed models showed good performance. By using a cross-validation method and an application domain characterization, the selected models were further validated to have powerful predictive ability. Furthermore, the incorporation of three nanostructural descriptors (metal oxide sublimation enthalpy, zeta potential, and specific surface area) linked to toxicity mechanisms (the release of metal ions, the stability of dispersions of particles in aqueous suspensions, and the surface properties of the material) effectively enhanced the prediction power and mechanistic interpretability of the selected models. These findings would not only be beneficial in the screening of ENPs with potential high ecological risks that need to be tested as a priority but also contribute to the development of environmental regulations and standards for ENPs.

Unveiling the mechanisms behind high CO2 adsorption by the selection of suitable ionic liquids incorporated into a ZIF-8 metal organic framework: A computational approach

There is growing focus on the crucial task of effectively capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere to mitigate environmental consequences. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been used to replace many conventional materials in gas separation, and the incorporation of ionic liquids (ILs) into porous MOFs has shown promise as a new technique for improving CO2 capture and separation. However, the driving force underlying the electronic modulation of MOF nanostructures and the mechanisms behind their high CO2 adsorption remain unclear. This study reports the effect of encapsulating different imidazolium ILs in porous ZIF-8, to clarify the adsorption mechanism of CO2 using density functional theory (DFT)-based approaches. For this purpose, a range of anions, including bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [NTf2], methanesulfonate [MeSO3], and acetate [AC], were combined with the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium [EMIM]+ cation. [EMIM]+-based ILs@ZIF-8 composites were computationally investigated to identify suitable materials for CO2 capture. First, the intermolecular and intramolecular interactions between [EMIM]+ and different anions were examined in detail, and their effects on CO2 adsorption were explored. Subsequently, the integration of these ILs into the ZIF-8 solid structure was studied to reveal how their interactions influenced the CO2 adsorption behavior. Our results demonstrate that the incorporation of ILs strongly affects the adsorption capability of CO2, which is highly dependent on the nature of the ILs inside the ZIF-8 framework. DFT simulations further confirmed that the incorporation of ILs into ZIF-8 led to superior CO2 capture compared to isolated ILs and pristine ZIF-8. This improvement was attributed to the mutual interactions between the ILs and ZIF-8, which effectively fine-tuned CO2 adsorption within the composite structure. This understanding may act as a general guide for gaining more insight into the interfacial interactions between ILs and ZIFs structures and how these molecular-level interactions can help predict the selection of ILs for CO2 adsorption and separation, thereby addressing environmental challenges with greater precision and effectiveness.

Comparing survival rates of endodontically treated teeth restored either with glass-fiber-reinforced or metal posts: A systematic review and meta-analyses

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

When restoring endodontically treated teeth, a post system is indicated to retain a core. Clinicians can choose from different post materials and types. However, the literature is inconclusive on the long-term clinical performance of available post systems.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to analyze the survival and failure rates of endodontically treated teeth restored either with glass-fiber-reinforced or metal posts.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The research question was formulated by following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines by using the Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, Study Type (PICOS) tool. Medline (PubMed), Embase, and Scopus searches complemented by manual search were performed for randomized controlled clinical trials with a follow-up of at least 2 years. Two independent authors performed screening and data extraction of the articles. Meta-analyses were performed with the RevMan software program. Homogeneity was checked by using chi2 and I2 tests, and random-effects meta-analyses were applied. Odds ratio and 95% confidence interval were calculated (α=.05). The publication bias was evaluated by using funnel plots and the Begg and Egger tests.

RESULTS

A total of 184 studies were retrieved through the electronic searches, and an additional 4 through the hand search. After title- and abstract-level exclusion, 23 studies remained for full-text analyses, of which 7 were selected for data extraction. Meta-analyses revealed an overall survival rate of 92.8% for endodontically treated teeth restored with glass-fiber-reinforced posts compared with 78.1% of those restored with metal posts. No statistically significant difference (P>.05) was found in the survival, success, or failure rates.

CONCLUSIONS

No statistically significant differences were found between the survival and failure rates of endodontically treated teeth restored either with glass-fiber-reinforced or metal posts. The overall survival rate was 92.8% for glass fiber posts and 78.1% for metal posts. Both are reliable materials when a significant amount of coronal tooth structure is missing and treatment with a post is indicated.

Sulfonic acid-functionalized k-carrageenan/Cr-based metal-organic framework: An efficient and recyclable catalyst for fructose conversion to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

A novel bio-based catalyst was developed by in-situ forming Chromium(III) (Cr)-based metal-organic framework, MIL-101(Cr), in the presence of k-carrageenan (k-Car) and followed by a post-synthetic modification to introduce additional -SO3H functional groups into the composite structure of k-Car/MIL-101(Cr). Different analyses were conducted to confirm the successful catalyst formation. The catalyst performance was evaluated in the solid acid catalyzed dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural. The Response Surface Method (RSM) optimization determined that employing 33 wt% of the catalyst at 105 °C for 40 min resulted in a remarkable 97.8 % yield. The catalyst demonstrated suitable recyclability, maintaining its catalytic efficiency over four cycles. Comparative studies with k-Car and the non-sulfonated composite highlighted the superior activity of the catalyst, emphasizing the synergy between the k-Car, MIL-101(Cr) and the influence of -SO3H post-functionalizing on the catalytic performance.

Bimetallic Mn-Ce loaded on different zeolite carriers applied in the toluene abatement in air by non-thermal plasma DDBD reactor

A sequence of zeolite carriers (Carrier = ZSM-5, Small crystal ZSM-5, MCM-41, SBA-15) were used to support active metals Mn-Ce, which have presented an enormous potential for plasma oxidation of toluene in air. The prepared samples were detected by means of N2 adsorption-desorption, SEM, XPS, H2-TPR, etc. Through the activity evaluation in the Non-thermal Plasma Reactor, we found that the catalysts with different carriers showed distinct degradation activities. The performance of mesoporous supported catalysts was better than that of microporous catalysts, of which MCM-41 performed best. 96.3% of toluene can be decomposed, and 97.3% of degraded toluene converted into final products CO2 completely at the initial concentration of 1000 ppm and SIE of 9 kJ/L. From the results, we can see that the appropriate carrier is conducive to maximizing the efficiency of the active metal, and Mn-Ce/MCM-41 got the best performance in the plasma catalysis for toluene abatement.

Efficient bio-remediation of multiple aromatic hydrocarbons using different types of thermotolerant, ring-cleaving dioxygenases derived from Aeribacillus pallidus HB-1

As toxic contaminants, aromatic compounds are widespread in most environmental matrices, and bioenzymatic catalysis plays a critical role in the degradation of xenobiotics. Here, a thermophillic aromatic hydrocarbon degrader Aeribacillus pallidus HB-1 was found. Bioinformatic analysis of the HB-1 genome revealed two ring-cleaving extradiol dioxygenases (EDOs), among which, EDO-0418 was assigned to a new subfamily of type I.1 EDOs and exhibited a broad substrate specificity, particularly towards biarylic substrate. Both EDOs exhibited optimal activities at elevated temperatures (55 and 65 °C, respectively) and showed remarkable thermostability, pH stability, metal ion resistance and tolerance to chemical reagents. Most importantly, simulated wastewater bioreactor experiments demonstrated efficient and uniform degradation performance of mixed aromatic substrates under harsh environments by the two enzymes combined for potential industrial applications. The unveiling of two thermostable dioxygenases with broad substrate specificities and stress tolerance provides a novel approach for highly efficient environmental bioremediation using composite enzyme systems.

Metal telluride nanosheets by scalable solid lithiation and exfoliation

Transition metal tellurides (TMTs) have been ideal materials for exploring exotic properties in condensed-matter physics, chemistry and materials science1-3. Although TMT nanosheets have been produced by top-down exfoliation, their scale is below the gram level and requires a long processing time, restricting their effective application from laboratory to market4-8. We report the fast and scalable synthesis of a wide variety of MTe2 (M = Nb, Mo, W, Ta, Ti) nanosheets by the solid lithiation of bulk MTe2 within 10 min and their subsequent hydrolysis within seconds. Using NbTe2 as a representative, we produced more than a hundred grams (108 g) of NbTe2 nanosheets with 3.2 nm mean thickness, 6.2 µm mean lateral size and a high yield (>80%). Several interesting quantum phenomena, such as quantum oscillations and giant magnetoresistance, were observed that are generally restricted to highly crystalline MTe2 nanosheets. The TMT nanosheets also perform well as electrocatalysts for lithium-oxygen batteries and electrodes for microsupercapacitors (MSCs). Moreover, this synthesis method is efficient for preparing alloyed telluride, selenide and sulfide nanosheets. Our work opens new opportunities for the universal and scalable synthesis of TMT nanosheets for exploring new quantum phenomena, potential applications and commercialization.

Climate warming, environmental degradation and pollution as drivers of antibiotic resistance

Antibiotic resistance is a major challenge to public health, but human-caused environmental changes have not been widely recognized as its drivers. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of the relationships between environmental degradation and antibiotic resistance, demonstrating that the former can potentially fuel the latter with significant public health outcomes. We describe that (i) global warming favors horizontal gene transfer, bacterial infections, the spread of drug-resistant pathogens due to water scarcity, and the release of resistance genes with wastewater; (ii) pesticide and metal pollution act as co-selectors of antibiotic resistance mechanisms; (iii) microplastics create conditions promoting and spreading antibiotic resistance and resistant bacteria; (iv) changes in land use, deforestation, and environmental pollution reduce microbial diversity, a natural barrier to antibiotic resistance spread. We argue that management of antibiotic resistance must integrate environmental goals, including mitigation of further increases in the Earth's surface temperature, better qualitative and quantitative protection of water resources, strengthening of sewage infrastructure and improving wastewater treatment, counteracting the microbial diversity loss, reduction of pesticide and metal emissions, and plastic use, and improving waste recycling. These actions should be accompanied by restricting antibiotic use only to clinically justified situations, developing novel treatments, and promoting prophylaxis. It is pivotal for health authorities and the medical community to adopt the protection of environmental quality as a part of public health measures, also in the context of antibiotic resistance management.

Detection of insulin oligomeric forms by a novel surface plasmon resonance-diffusion coefficient based approach

Insulin is commonly used to treat diabetes and undergoes aggregation at the site of repeated injections in diabetic patients. Moreover, aggregation is also observed during its industrial production and transport and should be avoided to preserve its bioavailability to correctly adjust glucose levels in diabetic patients. However, monitoring the effect of various parameters (pH, protein concentration, metal ions, etc.) on the insulin aggregation and oligomerization state is very challenging. In this work, we have applied a novel Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR)-based experimental approach to insulin solutions at various experimental conditions, monitoring how its diffusion coefficient is affected by pH and the presence of metal ions (copper and zinc) with unprecedented sensitivity, precision, and reproducibility. The reported SPR method, hereby applied to a protein for the first time, besides giving insight into the insulin oligomerization and aggregation phenomena, proved to be very robust for determining the diffusion coefficient of any biomolecule. A theoretical background is given together with the software description, specially designed to fit the experimental data. This new way of applying SPR represents an innovation in the bio-sensing field and expanding the potentiality of commonly used SPR instruments well over the canonical investigation of biomolecular interactions.

Metal mixtures and oral health among children and adolescents in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2017-2020

INTRODUCTION

Dental caries is the most common non-communicable human disease, yet little is known about the role of environmental metals, despite teeth consisting of a hard matrix of trace elements. We conducted a cross-sectional study of associations between environmental metals and objective assessment of dental caries and subjective assessments of oral health among a representative sample of U.S. children and adolescents.

METHODS

Data were from the 2017-March 2020 pre-pandemic data file of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). To account for metal mixtures, we used weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression to estimate the joint impact of multiple trace elements assessed in blood and urine with oral disease outcomes.

RESULTS

The blood metal mixture index was associated with a 32% (95% CI: 1.11, 1.56) increased risk of decayed surfaces while the urine metal mixture index was associated with a 106%, RR (95% CI = 2.06 (1.58, 2.70) increased caries risk. For both blood and urine, Mercury (Hg) had the largest contribution to the mixture index followed by Lead (Pb). The WQS blood metal mixture index was also significantly associated with poorer self-rated oral health, although the magnitude of the association was not as strong as for the objective oral disease measures, RR (95% CI) = 1.04 (1.02, 1.07).

DISCUSSION

Increased exposure to a metal mixture was significantly related to poorer objective and subjective oral health outcomes among U.S. children and adolescents. These are among the first findings showing that metal mixtures are a significant contributor to poor oral health.

Meat, Poultry, and Siluriformes Fish Samples Taken at Slaughter and Retail, 2017-2022

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) conducts surveillance of metallic elements in U.S. meat, poultry, and Siluriformes fish samples collected immediately postmortem as part of its National Residue Program (NRP). From 2017 to 2022, 13,966 samples were analyzed under the NRP. The Federal Emergency Response Network (FERN) Cooperative Agreement Program (CAP) tests meat, poultry, and Siluriformes fish products collected at retail in the United States for metals. From 2018 to 2022, 2,902 samples were analyzed by FERN CAP laboratories. Meat and poultry samples collected by FSIS show that most metals were not detected at all or were detected infrequently. Meat is a rich source of iron and zinc, and iron was detected in 22% (1,255/5,623) and zinc was detected in 48% (2,742/5,676) of meat and poultry samples, respectively. The percentage of samples testing positive for manganese, molybdenum, lead, and cadmium were higher in the FERN CAP retail samples than in FSIS samples. Expected human exposure from average levels of lead and cadmium found in meat and poultry was compared to toxicological reference values and was not found to exceed these values. Detections of arsenic and mercury were found more often in Siluriformes fish samples (2017-2022) than in terrestrial animals. Trace amounts of arsenic and mercury were detected in 8% and 4% of Siluriformes samples, respectively, but were not detected at levels that raise concern. On the whole, both the FSIS and FERN CAP datasets provide reassuring evidence of the safety of the FSIS-regulated food supply with regard to the studied elements.

Study on the mechanism and reaction characteristics of metal-supported phosphogypsum as oxygen carrier in a chemical looping gasification application

This study aimed to explore the chemical looping gasification (CLG) reaction characteristics of the metal-supported composite phosphogypsum (PG) oxygen carriers (OCs) and the thermodynamic mechanism. The FactSage 7.1 thermodynamic simulation was used to explore the oxygen release and H2S removal mechanisms. The experimental results showed that the syngas yield of CLG with PG-CuFe2O4 was more than that with PG-Fe2O320/CuO40 or PG-Fe2O330/CuO30 OC at 1023 K when the water vapor content was 0.3. Furthermore, the maximum syngas yield of the CO selectivity was 70.3% and of the CO2 selectivity was 23.8%. The H2/CO value was 0.78, and the highest carbon conversion efficiency was 91.9% in PG-CuFe2O4 at the gasification temperature of 1073 K. The metal-supported PG composite oxygen carrier was proved not only as an oxygen carrier to participate in the preparation of syngas but also as a catalyst to catalyze coal gasification reactions. Furthermore, both the experimental results and FactSage 7.1 thermodynamic analysis revealed that the trapping mechanism of H2S by composite OCs was as follows: CuO first lost lattice oxygen as an oxygen carrier to generate Cu2O, which, in turn, reacted with H2S to generate Cu2S. This study provided efficient guidance and reference for OC design in CLG.

Phantom study for CT artifacts of dental titanium implants and zirconia upper structures: the effects of occlusal plane angle setting and SEMAR algorithm

OBJECTIVES

The single-energy metal artifact reduction (SEMAR) algorithm effectively reduces metal artifacts in computed tomography (CT). The study aimed to evaluate the effect of the occlusal plane angle on metal artifacts caused by dental implants and zirconia upper structures, and the effectiveness of SEMAR for CT prognostic evaluation.

METHODS

Part of a bovine rib was used as the mandibular implant phantom. First, the phantom immersed in a water tank was scanned using CT to obtain the control image under certain conditions. Subsequently, three titanium implant bodies were implanted in a straight line into the phantom, and a zirconia superstructure was attached. CT scans were performed. The CT-reconstructed images were obtained with and without SEMAR processing. Twelve regions of interest (ROIs) were set at the same site on each sagittal image, and the CT values were measured at all the ROIs. The CT values of the ROIs in the control images and those of the ROIs with and without SEMAR were compared.

RESULTS

The variations in the occlusal plane angle during CT imaging negligibly affected the number of regions in which metal artifacts appeared. SEMAR improved the CT value of the trabecular bone, which was affected by metal artifacts.

CONCLUSION

This study showed that the occlusal plane angle occasionally did not affect the area of metal artifacts caused by dental implants or zirconia upper structures. Other results indicate that SEMAR is effective for accurately evaluating the alveolar bone around the implant body by reducing metal artifacts.
