Abstract
PURPOSE We sought to determine whether an early CT ischemic lesion showing parenchymal hypoattenuation might be undetectable on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in acute cerebral ischemia. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively evaluated CT and MR images of 70 consecutive patients with acute middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction. All patients underwent CT and MR imaging within 6 hours of symptom onset. We determined the presence of reversed discrepancy (RD), defined as an early ischemic lesion showing parenchymal hypoattenuation on CT but no hyperintensity on DWI. CT Hounsfield units (HU), apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs), and perfusion parameters were calculated for RD lesions. RESULTS RD was found in 9 (12.9%) patients and at basal ganglia (89%). The mean HU of RD lesion was lower than that of normal tissue (DeltaHU, 2.33 +/- 0.74, P < .001). RD lesions showed no significant decrease of ADC (ADC ratio, 0.97 +/- 0.07, P = .059) and cerebral blood flow (relative CBF, 0.87 +/- 0.20, P > 0.05). Delayed DWI hyperintensity occurred in 8 (88.8%) RD lesions, and all lesions progressed to infarction. In 6 (66%) of 9 patients with RD, Alberto Stroke Program Early CT scores of ischemic lesions were lower on CT than those on DWI. CONCLUSION RD was uncommonly found mainly in basal ganglia, and all RD lesions progressed to infarction at follow-up. Early CT ischemic lesion showing parenchymal hypoattenuation may be undetectable on DWI, and DWI may underestimate extent of severe ischemic tissue in patients with acute MCA infarction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe the CT findings of lymph nodes of the neck involved in peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCL). MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-seven patients with pathologically proved PTCL with involvement of the lymph nodes of the neck were enrolled in this study. We retrospectively evaluated the lymph nodes on CT images with special attention to nodal necrosis, the margin, and enhancement patterns. RESULTS In the 27 patients studied, nodal necrosis and ill-defined margin were seen in 11 (41%) and 19 (70%), respectively. Heterogeneous enhancement of enlarged lymph nodes was noted on CT images in 19 (70%) of 27 patients. Homogeneous enhancement without ill-defined margin and/or nodal necrosis was only seen in 6 of 27 patients (22%). CONCLUSION Necrosis, an ill-defined margin, and heterogeneous enhancement of enlarged lymph nodes in the neck are relatively common CT features of PTCL. For patients with cervical lymph node enlargement, the presence of these findings may suggest high-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, including PTCL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is well known that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can cause sexual dysfunction, so it is possible that sibutramine, a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor, could induce sexual dysfunction. DESIGN AND SUBJECTS The effect of sibutramine on sexual function was evaluated in 46 overweight and obese (body mass index (BMI) > or = 23 kg/m2) but otherwise healthy married women (28-44 years). Participants were randomly assigned at baseline to either the sibutramine or control group. The Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire was used to assess sexual function at baseline and after treatment with behavioral therapy plus sibutramine 10 mg once daily or behavioral therapy alone (control) for 8 weeks. RESULTS Mean weight loss from baseline to week 8 was -6.03% in sibutramine group and -0.38% in the control group. There was significant improvement of FSFI total score, arousal domain score and lubrication domain score in the sibutramine group (P<0.05), and significant differences in arousal, orgasm, satisfaction domain score and total score (P<0.05) in favor of sibutramine. Decreases in body weight and BMI were correlated with the improvement of arousal (r = -0.44 and r = -0.48, respectively) and orgasm (r = -0.45 and r = -0.46, respectively) domains. CONCLUSION Treatment with sibutramine plus behavioral therapy did not induce sexual dysfunction and sibutramine-induced weight reduction appeared to have a positive impact on sexual function in this small group of overweight and moderately obese women. The degree of improvement in sexual function was correlated with the degree of weight reduction.

Abstract
A spent LWR fuel specimen between Ca-bentonite blocks was leached in a simulated bentonite-saturated granitic water (SBGW) for 165 days and its results were compared with those of a specimen leached without a bentonite block. The amounts of Cs, Sb, Sr, Eu, Am, U and Pu released from a 4.3 mm thickness of a fuel pellet with a 50,400 MWD/MTU burn-up in the SBGW without a bentonite block were 2.2, 0.25, 0.15, 0.02, 0.01, 0.01 and approximately 5 x 10(-4)% of their inventories, respectively. However, the amounts of nuclides released from the specimen between the 1.4 Mg/m(3) bentonite blocks were decreased by three times at least. Moreover, the concentrations of the nuclides in the leachate were very low because most of them were retained in the bentonite blocks.

Abstract
PURPOSE Our aim was to correlate the radiologic characteristics of cyclosporine-induced benign breast diseases with clinical and pathologic findings. MATERIALS AND METHODS The clinical, mammographic, and ultrasonographic records of 33 female renal transplant recipients who received cyclosporine were retrospectively reviewed. Eleven patients had 46 breast masses on ultrasonography. We performed core needle biopsies on 20 masses and reviewed the pathologic findings. RESULTS Among 33 female renal transplant recipients, 11 (33%) had 46 benign breast lesions detected on ultrasonography. We performed core needle biopsies on 20 of the 46 masses. On pathologic examination, 12 were fibroadenomas, 6 showed fibrocystic changes, and 2 revealed dense fibrosis. Regardless of the final pathologic diagnosis, more than half of the lesions revealed severe lymphatic and venular swellings. Among 11 patients with breast lesions on ultrasonography, 10/11 (91%) showed multiplicity, and 7/11 (64%) bilaterality. Mammographically, patients with breast lesions revealed heterogeneous or extremely dense breast patterns, and 8 of 11 patients, circumscribed masses. Twenty-two patients without breast lesions showed scattered fibroglandular densities (n = 7), or heterogeneously dense (n = 11) or extremely dense (n = 4) breast patterns, and 3 of 22 patients showed vague or asymmetric densities that needed further evaluation. CONCLUSION The development of new breast lesions in patients after renal transplantation should suggest a diagnosis of cyclosporine-induced benign breast disease including fibroadenoma, fibrocystic changes, and dense fibrosis.

Abstract
AIMS Diabetes mellitus (DM) is frequently observed in patients with cirrhosis, particularly that due to hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. However, no studies have focused on the clinical significance of glycaemic control in cirrhotic patients because of their short life expectancy and poor hepatic function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic impact of glycaemic control in patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HCV-related cirrhosis and DM. METHODS A total of 434 patients with HCV-related (HCV group, n = 88) or HBV-related (HBV group, n = 346) cirrhosis were studied retrospectively. We determined the prevalence of DM and treatment methods for hyperglycaemia and status of glycaemic control, and the patients' outcome. RESULTS The prevalence of DM was 43.2% (38/88) in the HCV group and 19.7% (68/346) in the HBV group. Patients in the HCV group were older with a female preponderance. DM was detected before the diagnosis of cirrhosis or simultaneously in 92% and 79% in the HCV and HBV groups, respectively. Most patients were treated with insulin or oral hypoglycaemic agents. However, blood glucose levels were maintained within the normal range in 34.2% of the HCV group and in 23.5% of the HBV group. Forty-six patients died during the observation period in both groups. Hepatic failure was the most common cause of death, and sepsis and variceal bleeding were more frequent in the HCV group than in the HBV group. Multivariate analysis showed that Child-Pugh class was the most important factor for survival in both groups. In the HCV group, the status of glycaemic control was a significant independent factor of survival (P = 0.018). In the HBV group, age and the development of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis were significant. CONCLUSION DM is more frequent in patients with HCV-related cirrhosis than in patients with HBV. Strict control of blood glucose levels could improve survival in HCV patients. A precise assessment of the risks and benefits of glycaemic control is required to reduce the mortality and morbidity of patients with cirrhosis and DM.

Abstract
Experimental and theoretical studies are made of the consequences of a nonlinear coupling process between pump rf waves and interchange modes in mirror plasmas. It is demonstrated that the interchange-stable operation window exists depending on the applied rf power and gamma=omega(0)/Omega(i), where omega(0) (Omega(i)) is the angular frequency of the applied rf wave (ion cyclotron frequency). Results are shown that the nonlinear wave coupling process gives rise to the operation window near the resonance (gamma approximately equal to 1), which is elucidated by theoretical analyses combined with full rf wave simulations.

Abstract
The atomic structure of Al layer on Si(001)-(2 x 1) surface has been studied by coaxial impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy. When 0.5 monolayer (ML) of Al atoms are adsorbed on Si(001) at room temperature, it is found that Al adatoms are dimerized and Al ad-dimers are oriented parallel to the underlying Si dimers at the position of centering T3 site with a height of 1.02 Angstroms from the first layer of Si(001). The bond length of the Al dimer is 2.67 Angstroms. With increasing Al coverage up to one ML, Al ad-dimers still occupied near T3 site and the next favorable site is near HH site.

Abstract
AIM Peripheral nerve injuries are commonly encountered clinical problems and often result in severe functional deficits. In the present study, the effects of treadmill running on the recovery rate of locomotor function and the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) mRNA following sciatic crushed nerve injury in rats were investigated. METHODS EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN Comparative investigation was performed over 14 days. SETTING Experimental animal laboratory. PARTICIPANTS 24 male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 200+/-10 g. Animals were randomly assigned into 3 groups: the sham-operation group, the sciatic nerve injury group, and the sciatic nerve injury and running group. INTERVENTIONS The right sciatic nerve was crushed for 30 s using a surgical clip. Rats of the running group were made to run on a treadmill for 30 min once a day for 12 consecutive days. MEASURES Functional recovery was analyzed using a walking track analysis which can be quantified with the sciatic function index (SFI) and BDNF mRNA expression was analyzed using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). RESULTS Sciatic crushed nerve injury showed characteristic gait changes showing decrease of SFI value and treadmill running significantly enhanced the SFI value. The level of BDNF mRNA expression was increased following sciatic crushed nerve injury and treadmill running significantly suppressed the sciatic nerve injury-induced increment of BDNF mRNA expression. CONCLUSIONS It can be suggested that treadmill running after peripheral nerve injury is effective in the functional recovery by inhibition on the over-expression of BDNF mRNA.

Abstract
The atomic structure of reconstructed Si(001)c(4 x 4)-C surface has been studied by coaxial impact collision ion scattering spectroscopy. When the 100L of ethylene (C(2)H(4)) molecules have been exposed on Si(001)-(2 x 1) surface at 700 degrees C, it is found that C atoms cause the ordering of missing Si dimer defects and occupy the fourth layer of Si(001) directly below the bridge site. Our results provide the support for the previous model in which a missing dimer structure is accompanied by C incorporation into the subsurface.

Abstract
PURPOSE To describe the MR findings of primary central nervous system T-cell lymphoma (T-PCNSL) in immunocompetent patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS Seven patients with pathologically proven T-PCNSL were included in our study. The number, location, shape, enhancement pattern, and signal intensity of the tumors were determined. Diffusion-weighted images (DWI) and perfusion-weighted images (PWI) were obtained in four and two patients, respectively. Apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) were generated, and regions of interest were defined in each lesion. RESULTS Four patients with T-PCNSL had a single mass, while the others had multiple lesions (four, three, and two lesions, respectively). All seven cases of T-PCNSL had a supratentorial location: 12 in the subcortical area and 1 in the thalamus. No leptomeningeal involvement was noted. All tumors showed iso- to low T1 and iso- to slightly high T2 signal intensity to the adjacent gray matter. Rim enhancement was seen in 5 of the 7 patients (71.4%), while heterogeneous and homogeneous enhancement was seen in each of two. On DWI and ADC maps, the enhancing lesions showed slight hyperintensity in three patients (mean ADC ratio, 0.92 +/- 0.06) and iso-intensity in the other (ADC ratio, 1.02 +/- 0.05). Cystic areas consistent with necrosis were noted in three patients. High-signal intensity area in the cortex was noted on T1-weighted images in three patients, suggesting hemorrhage. In two patients, the same signal intensity area was noted within the mass. The two masses on the relative cerebral blood volume (rCBV) map demonstrated either similar or slightly higher signal intensity than that of the contralateral white matter. The rCBV ratios of these two masses were 1.27 +/- 0.16 and 1.35 +/- 0.2, respectively. CONCLUSION T-PCNSLs show a predilection for a subcortical location, a relatively high incidence of cortical or intratumoral hemorrhage, rim enhancement, or cystic-areas consistent with necrosis on magnetic resonance imaging. The lower rCBV ratio of the tumor might be helpful in differentiating T-PCNSL from other brain tumors such as high-grade glioma.

Abstract
Gaegurin 4 (GGN4) is an antimicrobial peptide of 37 amino acids isolated from the skin of a frog, Rana rugosa. GGN4 has a disulfide bond between the residues 31 and 37, which is highly conserved among the antimicrobial peptides isolated from skin of the genus, Rana. However, the role of this C-terminal heptapeptide motif is not well understood. In this work, we compared the membrane effects of the full-length GGN4 (C37) and GGN4 1-30 (C30), which is devoid of the C-terminal seven amino acids to elucidate the function of the C-terminal motif. C37 induced significantly larger membrane conductance (>10x) in the model lipid bilayers formed with acidic and neutral phospholipids and larger K+ efflux from gram-positive (>30x) and gram-negative bacteria. However, the pores induced by C37 and C30 were not different in their permeability to K+ over Cl- (permeability ratio of K+ to Cl- = 4.8-7.1). In addition, the pore-forming effect of C37 or C30 in acidic membranes was not different from that in neutral membranes. Furthermore, C37-induced K+ efflux was not significantly decreased by the reducing agent, dithiothreitol. The results indicate that C-terminal heptapeptide sequence plays an important role in maintaining the high pore-forming activity of GGN4, but does not participate in forming GGN4-induced pore structure. The disulfide bond in this region does not appear critical for such high ionophoric activity of GGN4.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori infection increases the risk of gastric cancer but the molecular mechanisms responsible are not well understood. Gastric cells chronically exposed to H pylori in vitro develop resistance to apoptosis associated with low levels of p27, a cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor and haplo insufficient tumour suppressor gene that is downregulated in gastric cancer. AIM To determine whether the low level of p27 protein is responsible for the resistance to apoptosis of gastric cancer cells. METHODS The effects of increasing the expression of p27 protein were examined by transiently and stably transfecting a plasmid encoding full length p27 mRNA into apoptosis resistant gastric cancer cell lines with low p27 expression that were derived from AGS gastric cancer cells by chronic H pylori coculture followed by dilutional cloning. RESULTS Low p27 expression in the apoptosis resistant derivative cell lines was associated with an approximate 30% decrease in p27 mRNA and an 80% decrease in p27 protein that was not due to increased proteasome dependent degradation of p27 protein. Transient or stable transfection with p27 constructs partially restored the sensitivity of the apoptosis resistant cells to 5-fluorouracil and H pylori induced apoptosis without altering spontaneous apoptotic cell death. CONCLUSIONS These results demonstrate that p27 positively regulates, at least in part, the apoptotic response of gastric epithelial cells to H pylori. Low gastric p27 may promote gastric carcinogenesis associated with H pylori infection by inhibiting apoptotic pathways.

Recently, the existence of electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) in a weakly magnetized inductively coupled plasma (MICP) has been evidenced [ChinWook Chung et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 095002 (2002)]. The distinctive feature of the ECR effect in the MICP is efficacious heating of low-energy electrons. In the present paper, electron heating characteristics in the MICP have been investigated by observing electron energy distribution function dependencies on various external parameters such as gas pressure, driving frequency, and rf power (electron density). It is found that the ECR effect on electron heating becomes enhanced with decreasing pressure or increasing driving frequency. The ECR heating becomes weak at high rf power due to the electron-electron collisions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the outcome and predictors of recurrence in patients with a pretreatment prostate biopsy Gleason score (GS) of >/= 8 and treated with radical prostatectomy (RP). PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed 1048 consecutive patients who underwent RP by one surgeon (M.S.S.); patients who had a pretreatment biopsy GS of >/= 8 were identified. Information was recorded on patient age, initial prostate specific antigen (PSA) level, clinical stage, biopsy GS, pathology GS, extraprostatic extension (EPE), tumour volume, surgical margin status, seminal vesicle invasion (SVI), and lymph node involvement. The results were assessed statistically using the Kaplan-Meier method, univariate log-rank tests and multivariate analysis using Cox's proportional hazards regression. RESULTS In all, 123 patients met the initial selection criteria; 44 were excluded from further analyses (five salvage RP, 23 < 1 year follow-up and 16 adjuvant treatment). Thus 79 patients were included in the uni- and multivariate analyses; 25 (31%) patients had a GS of </= 7 in the RP specimen and 54 (69%) remained at GS >/= 8. The mean follow-up was 55 months, the age of the patients 63 years and the mean (sd) initial PSA level 13 (12) ng/mL. The overall biochemical failure rate was 38% (41% if the final GS was >/= 8 and 32% if it was </= 7). For those with a GS of >/= 8 in the RP specimen, 20% (11/54) were organ-confined; two patients (2.5%) in this group developed local recurrence. If the final GS was </= 7, 52% (13/25) were organ-confined. In the univariate analysis, significant risk factors for recurrence were PSA >/= 20 ng/mL, EPE, SVI, a positive surgical margin and tumour volume. Cox's proportional regression indicated that a PSA of >/= 20 ng/mL (hazard ratio 7.9, 95% confidence interval 2.6-24.2, P < 0.001), the presence of EPE (4.2, 1.6-10.9, P = 0.004) and a positive surgical margin (3.8, 1.5-9.7, P = 0.005) were significant independent predictors in a multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION RP is a reasonable treatment option for patients with a prostate biopsy GS of >/=8 and clinical stage T1-2. These patients have a high chance of remaining disease-free if their PSA level is </= 20 ng/mL. Patients with a pretreatment biopsy GS of >/= 8 should be counselled about the potential differences between the biopsy and the RP specimen GS.

Abstract
AIM Effect of treadmill exercise on hippocampal cell proliferation under normal conditions has been well documented; however, this effect under alcohol intoxication conditions is not clarified, yet. In the present study, the effect of treadmill exercise on cell proliferation in the dentate gyrus in alcohol-intoxicated rats was investigated. METHODS EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN comparative investigation on number of 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU)-positive cells in the dentate gyrus 8 days after commencement. SETTING animal laboratory. PARTICIPANTS male Sprague-Dawley rats of 5 weeks in age weighing 150+/-10 g. INTERVENTION animals were divided into 4 groups: the control-rest group, the control-exercise group, the alcohol-treated-rest group, and the alcohol-treated-exercise group. Animals of the alcohol-treated groups were injected intraperitoneally with alcohol (2 g/kg) once a day for 3 days. All animals were injected BrdU (50 mg/kg) intraperitoneally, and rats of exercise groups were made to run on treadmill for 30 min each day for 5 days following alcohol administration. MEASURES mean number of BrdU-positive cells in dentate gyrus was observed via immunohistochemistry. RESULTS Treadmill exercise significantly increased the number of BrdU-positive cells in the dentate gyrus. Also, treatment with alcohol for 3 days inhibited cell proliferation and treadmill exercise alleviated alcohol-induced inhibition of new cell formation. CONCLUSION These results suggest the possibility that treadmill exercise may help in improvement following alcohol-induced brain damage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Technical difficulties have been experienced in endoscopic hemoclipping on the posterior wall of the body of the stomach because the angle of approach is tangential. It has been suggested that the use of a transparent cap on the tip of the endoscope could help to solve this problem. The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of endoscopic hemoclipping using a transparent cap over the tip of the endoscope. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 74 patients with a bleeding peptic ulcer or stigmata of recent hemorrhage underwent endoscopic hemoclipping. Technical difficulty in hemoclipping was experienced in 18 patients and the transparent cap was used in these cases. We therefore conducted a nonrandomized prospective study to compare bleeding control with the hemoclip with and without the aid of a transparent cap. RESULTS There were no statistically significant differences between the patients treated with the cap and those treated without the cap with regard to the initial hemostasis rate (94.4 % vs. 91.1 %), the rebleeding rate (11.7 % vs. 11.8 %), or the permanent hemostasis rate (94.4 % vs. 96.4 %). CONCLUSIONS Although there was no statistically significant difference between patients treated with or without a transparent cap, hemoclipping with the aid of the cap made it possible to clip a lesion too tangential to be clipped without it. However, this study did not compare conventional hemoclipping with hemoclipping using a cap because the cap was only used in cases in which conventional clipping had failed.

Abstract
Dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta undergo apoptosis after transection of the medial forebrain bundle. We have assessed the temporal and sequential activities of microglia in these events by examining the complement-3 (OX-42), major histocompatibility complex class II antigen presentation (OX-6) and phagocytic activity (ED1), and correlating these indicators with dopaminergic neuronal loss. Microglia in the ipsilateral substantia nigra pars reticulata evinced activation morphology at 12 h postaxotomy. Phagocytic microglia apposed dying dopaminergic neurons in the pars compacta starting at 3 days postlesion; their number increased through 14 days and slowly decreased. Nuclear chromatin condensation and significant loss of tyrosine hydroxylase-positive dopaminergic neurons occurred around 7 days postlesion. In contrast to microglial expression of interleukin-1beta and inducible nitric oxide synthase at the axotomy site, nigral microglia were interleukin-1beta and inducible nitric oxide synthase-negative. Consistently, RNase protection assays showed that interleukin-1beta and inducible nitric oxide synthase transcripts in nigra were equivocal. The present data support the idea that phagocytosis of axotomized neurons by activated microglia is not limited to dead neurons but includes dying neurons probably without cytotoxic effects of inflammatory substances, such as interleukin-1beta or nitric oxide.

Abstract
The most common type of esophageal food-related foreign body is the meat bolus, which is frequently associated with underlying esophageal stenosis. Herein, we report two cases of meat bolus impaction associated with nutcracker esophagus. In the first case, the 63-year-old male patient had chest discomfort and swallowing difficulty after ingestion of butcher's meat. In the second case, the 55-year-old male patient had complained of swallowing difficulty after ingestion of chicken. In both cases, no pathologic findings were observed endoscopically after removal of the esophageal meat bolus. We performed esophageal manometry, which showed very high amplitudes of esophageal pressure in the mid- and distal esophagus. These findings were consistent with nutcracker esophagus. These cases show that esophageal motility disorder may be the cause of esophageal foreign body impaction, and esophageal manometry should be performed for evaluation of the cause of foreign body, especially in an endoscopically normal patient.

Abstract
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a powerful technique of detecting Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), but has a limited sensitivity and specificity. A new assay of HHV-8 based on combination of PCR with dot blot hybridization (DBH) was developed and evaluated for its sensitivity and specificity. An HHV-8-specific primer pair, ORF26out was used for amplification of target DNA. When the PCR product was detected visually the limit of detection was 0.1 ng DNA isolated from HHV-8-infected BC-3 cells. For DBH, the DNA amplified with the primer pair ORF26in specific for HHV-8 was labeled with digoxigenin (DIG). This DIG-labeled probe was capable of detecting 1.0 ng of DNA isolated from HHV-8-infected BC-3 cells. On the other hand, PCR combined with DBH (PCR/DBH) was more sensitive than PCR or DBH alone and also very specific. The sensitivity of PCR/DBH was higher than that of PCR and DBH alone. The PCR/DBH assay can be applied efficiently to confirm the presence of HHV-8 in clinical samples and to differentiate specifically HHV-8 infection from other viral infections.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the effectiveness of Brooks' posterior stabilisation and fusion for the unstable atlantoaxial joint due to congenital dysplastic dens and trauma. METHODS We retrospectively studied records of 54 patients (36 males and 18 females; age range, 3-58 years) who underwent Brooks' posterior stabilisation procedure between March 1975 and December 1999, at the Catholic University of Korea Medical Center and Dong-Shin General Hospital, Seoul. A single-stranded Kirschner wire was used to stabilise the first 19 cases (thin wires in 12 cases and thick wires in 7), and double-stranded wires were used in the next 35 cases (thin wires in 4 cases and thick wires in 31). After surgery, patients were immobilised in bed with light Halter traction of the head, followed by cervical bracing. RESULTS Fusion was observed by X-ray postoperatively at 15 weeks in 48 patients. Reduction was achieved in 3 luxation cases (including the single case of rotatory fixation). Brooks' fusion failed in 4 patients with dens fractures and 2 with dens anomaly. Four dens fractures in cases of successful Brooks' fusion in Brooks' fusion did not unite. Wire failure occurred in 4 cases of thin single-stranded wire fixation, namely, 2 cases of dens fractures and 2 of dens anomaly. CONCLUSION Brooks' procedure is safe and has a high fusion rate when double-stranded strong wire fixation of the atlantoaxial joint is combined with meticulous bone grafting and subsequent cervical bracing.

Abstract
We have characterized the profile of membrane currents in an immortalized human neural stem cell line, HB1.F3 cells, using whole-cell patch clamp technique. Human neural stem cell line generated from primary cell cultures of embryonic human telencephalon using a replication-incompetent retroviral vector containing v-myc expresses nestin, a cell type-specific marker for neural stem cells. The human neural stem cells expressed both outward and inward K(+) currents with no evidence for Na(+) currents. The density of the outward, delayed rectifying type K(+) current was 1.8 +/- 0.015 nA/pF, and that of the inwardly rectifying K(+) current was 0.37 +/- 0.012 nA/pF (at 30 mM of [K(+)](o)). In order to induce neuronal differentiation of the neural stem cells, a full-length coding region of NeuroD, a neurogenic transcription factor, was transfected into HB1.F3 cells. Introduction of NeuroD induced expression of Na(+) currents with the current density of 0.042 +/- 0.011 nA/pF. The presence of two types of K(+) currents and expression of Na(+) currents induced by NeuroD appear to reflect the characteristic physiological features of human neural stem cells.

Abstract
The evolution of the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) over a weak magnetic field range is investigated in magnetized radio-frequency (rf) inductive discharges under a collisionless regime where an anomalous skin effect and electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) can occur. A significant change in the low-energy range of the EEDF is found in the ECR condition during the evolution. The observed result reveals the low-energy electrons are efficiently heated by the rf ECR in the presence of the anomalous skin effect. The calculated result of the electron distribution based on kinetic theory is in good agreement with the experiment.

Abstract
The highly conserved encapsidation signal (epsilon) of hepatitis B viral (HBV) pregenomic RNA has been reported as an essential component for encapsidation and protein priming of HBV polymerase. Here, we report that two HBV epsilon RNA-binding host proteins (80 and 43 kDa) and a copurifying protein (100 kDa) were purified and characterized by the combined methods of UV cross-linking analysis with the epsilon RNA and column chromatography. Amino-terminal microsequencing showed that 80- and 43-kDa proteins were identified as the heterodimeric nuclear factor of activated T cells (NF90/NF45) and 100 kDa as a molecular chaperone, the GRP94. The heterodimeric factor interacted preferentially with the upper-bulge region of HBV epsilon RNA helping the HBV polymerase bind the lower-bulge region. Using in vitro protein priming analysis, the initial oligonucleotide of the protein-priming product was deduced as 5'-GAAC-3', which is the complementary sequence of both regions of DR1 and epsilon in the pregenomic RNA. Previously, we also proposed that the GRP94 was associated with HBV polymerase in the human liver cell HepG2. These results suggest that the heterodimeric factor plays an important role in the priming activity of HBV polymerase.

Abstract
The biodegradation of toluene by biofiltration inoculated with Pseudomonas putida DK-1 was investigated with variation of the several environmental parameters, such as temperature, bed length, gas flow rate and optimal humidity zone. The optimal temperature range to treat toluene gas was found to be 32-35 degrees C. Increasing the gas flow rate showed an inverse effect on the elimination capacity and the removal efficiency. The optimal gas flow rate was obtained at 65 ml min(-1) from the relation between the removal efficiency and the elimination capacity. The biodegradation rate of the toluene with respect to the bed lengths (3, 6, 9, 12 and 15 cm) increased up to 80 h but was then independent of the bed lengths after 80 h except for the 3 cm bed length. The elimination capacity was improved by about 70% compared with that reported in other literature and was also in agreement with theoretical models.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine the distribution of the FcgammaRlla and FcgammaRIIIa polymorphisms and their association with clinical manifestations in Korean lupus patients. Three hundred SLE (systemic lupus erythematosus) patients (48 male, 252 female) meeting 1982 ACR criteria and 197 Korean disease-free controls were enrolled. Genotyping for FcgammaRlla 131 R/H and FcgammaRIIIa 176 F/V was performed by PCR of genomic DNA using allele-specific primers and the FcgammaRIIIa genotype was confirmed by direct sequencing of PCR product in some cases. There was significant skewing in the distribution of the three FcgammaRIIa genotypes between the SLE and the controls (P=0.002 for R/R131 vs R/H131 and H/H131, OR 2.5 (95% Cl 1.4-4.5), but not in FcgammaRIIIa genotypes. FcgammaRIIa-R allele was a significant predictor of lupus nephritis, as compared with SLE patients without nephritis (P=0.034 for R131 vs H131, OR 1.4 (95% Cl 1.03-1.9)), but proliferative nephritis (WHO class III and IV) was less common in patients with FcgammaRlla-R/R131 and in FcgammaRIIa-R allele. In 300 SLE patients, high binding allele combination H131/V176 was less common in SLE with nephritis than in SLE without nephritis. Hemolytic anemia was less common in R131/F176 allele combination among four FcgammaRIIa/FcgammaRIIIa allelic combinations. Male SLE patients showed a higher frequency of renal involvement, serositis, thrombocytopenia, malar rash and discoid rash than female SLE, and male SLE had a higher frequency of FcgammaRIIa-R/R131 or R131-allele than male controls, but FcgammaRIIa or FcgammaRIIIa genotypes had no association with renal involvement in male SLE patients. FcgammaRIIa-H/H131 showed a higher frequency of hemolytic anemia and less pulmonary complications in male SLE. Female SLE patients showed higher frequency of any hematologic abnormality, lymphopenia, anticardiolipin antibody (+) and anti-Ro antibody (+) than male SLE, and had earlier onset of first symptoms. There was no skewing in FcgammaRIIa or FcgammaRIIIa genotypes between female SLE and female controls, but FcgammaRIIa-R131 allele showed skewing between female SLE with nephritis and female SLE without nephritis. The age at onset of thrombocytopenia was earlier in FcgammaRIIa R/R131 among three FcgammaRIIa genotypes, and serositis in FcgammaRIIIa-F/F176 among three FcgammaRIIIa genotypes. FcgammaRIIa-R131 homozygote was a major predisposing factor to the development of SLE and FcgammaRIIa-RI31 homozygote and R131 allele were a predisposing factor, and H131/V176 was a protective allele combination in lupus nephritis. In contrast to other ethnic patients, in our study cohort, clinical manifestation was different between male and female, and FcgammaRIIa and FcgammaRIIIa showed somewhat different clinical associations between the genders.

Abstract
We compared the effectiveness of and complications resulting from modified deep sclerectomy with catgut implant (modified-DSCI) with those of standard deep sclerectomy with collagen implant (DSCI) in the short term following surgery. In this retrospective study, standard-DSCI was performed on thirteen patients (17 eyes), and modified-DSCI was performed on seven patients (11 eyes). After dissection of a 5x5 mm sized superficial scleral flap, a 3x4 mm sized rectangular deep scleral flap was constructed in DSCI and a 2x3 mm sized triangular deep scleral flap in modified DSCI. A collagen implant was placed on the scleral bed in DSCI and # 0 CHROMIC Catgut Absorbable Suture was used in modified DSCI. The mean follow up was 11.0+/-6.1 months in DSCI and 9.3+/-4.7 months in modified DSCI. The mean preoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) was 38.6+/-10.9 mmHg in DSCI and 34.8+/-8.6 mmHg in modified DSCI. In the DSCI group, the IOP was 13.4+/-3.0 mmHg at final follow up, and was 11.4+/-3.2 mmHg in the modified DSCI group. The number of Nd:YAG goniopuncture was 3 cases (25%) in the modified DSCI group, and 3 cases (21.4%) in the DSCI group. The number of intraoperative microperforations was 3 in the DSCI group and 2 in the modified DSCI group. Temporary hypotony was encountered in 8 eyes (57.1%) of the DSCI group and 4 eyes (50%) of the modified DSCI group. There was no significant difference observed between the two groups in regards to the effectiveness or rate of complications seen during short term follow up.

Abstract
Activation of hepatic stellate cells (HSC) has been identified as a critical step in hepatic fibrogenesis and is regulated by several factors including cytokines and oxidative stress. However, the molecular mechanism for HSC inactivation is not well understood. We investigated an N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC)-mediated signaling pathway involved in HSC inactivation. NAC, which acting through its reducing activity, induced cell arrest at G1 via the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) kinase (MEK)/MAPK pathway in a Ras-independent manner. The sustained activation of this extracellular signal-regulated kinase induced the expression of p21(Cip1/WAF1), a cell cycle-dependent kinase inhibitor, and mediated cell growth arrest through the Sp1 transcription activator-dependent mechanism. These effects of NAC were all reversed by treatment of HSC with MEK inhibitor PD98059 followed by culturing HSC on type I collagen-coated flasks. The collagen-mediated suppression of NAC-induced arrest may be due to an overriding of the cell cycle arrest through an acceleration of integrin-induced cell growth. NAC action is actually dependent on modulating the redox states of cysteine residues of target proteins such as Raf-1, MEK, and ERK. In conclusion, an understanding of the NAC signaling pathway in HSC should provide the theoretical basis for clinical approaches using antioxidant therapies in liver fibrosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anti-CD11a (hu1124) is a humanized monoclonal antibody directed against the CD11a subunit of LFA-1. This study investigated whether treatment with anti-CD11a antibody provides clinical benefit to patients with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. METHODS This was a double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase II, multicenter study. In total, 145 patients with minimum Psoriasis Area and Severity Index scores of 12 and affected body surface area of 10% or more were sequentially enrolled into low-dose (0.1 mg/kg, n = 22) or high-dose (0.3 mg/kg, n = 75) groups. Within groups, patients were randomized to treatment or placebo (n = 48) in a 2:1 ratio. Drug was administered intravenously at weekly intervals for 8 weeks. RESULTS The percentage of subjects achieving more than 50% improvement in physician's global assessment at day 56 (1 week after final dose) was 15% and 48% for placebo and 0.3 mg/kg of drug, respectively (P =.002). A physician's global assessment of excellent (>75% improvement) was greater in the 0.3 mg/kg group versus placebo (25% vs 2%, P =.0003). Average Psoriasis Area and Severity Index scores at day 56 were 13.9 +/- 7.5 (placebo) and 10.9 +/- 8.4 (0.3 mg/kg) (P <.0001). Epidermal thickness was reduced in the 0.3 mg/kg group compared with the placebo group (37% vs 19%, P =.004). Treatment was well tolerated; mild to moderate flu-like complaints were the most common adverse events. White blood cell counts and lymphocyte counts transiently increased. Depletion of circulating lymphocytes did not occur. CONCLUSIONS Anti-CD11a antibody administered intravenously in 8 weekly doses of 0.3 mg/kg was well tolerated and induced clinical and histologic improvements in psoriasis.

Abstract
This study was performed to identify the anastomoses between the accessory nerve and the posterior roots of cervical nerves below the level of C1 segment, and to evaluate their clinical significance. One hundred spinal cord sides of Koreans were studied under the surgical microscope. In order to trace the posterior root of a cervical nerve after anastomosis with the accessory nerve, or the bridging fibers between the accessory nerve and the cervical posterior roots, the accessory nerves with the posterior roots and the bridging fibers were stained with osmium tetroxide. The anastomosis was classified into five types, according to whether the accessory nerve and the cervical posterior root crossed each other, and also according to the site of the bridging fiber between them. The bridging fibers in the most common type of anastomoses were observed to connect the posterior roots of a cervical nerve with the spinal rootlet of the accessory nerve. The possibility that the motor fibers of accessory nerve from the spinal cord may innervate the trapezius muscle through the cervical nerve, was discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the cost-effectiveness and cost-benefit of initiating sumatriptan therapy in patients with acute migraine who were previously taking nontriptan drugs. PATIENTS AND METHODS This is an economic analysis of a prospective, pretest-posttest, observational 6-month outcomes study of 178 patients with a physician diagnosis of migraine who received their first prescription for sumatriptan between October 1994 and August 1996 and were members of a mixed-model managed care organization in western Pennsylvania. Migraine-related resource use data were obtained from the managed care organization's medical and pharmacy claims databases. The primary outcome measure for this economic analysis was the total disability time that patients experienced because of migraine. Patients reported time missed from work and usual nonwork activities because of migraine on self-administered questionnaires at baseline and at 3 and 6 months after initiation of sumatriptan. RESULTS Initiation of sumatriptan resulted in a decrease of 662 migraine-disability-days for work and 1236 migraine-disability-days for nonwork activities during the 6 months of the study (decrease from 27.8 to 17.2 days per person), totaling 1898 migraine-disability-days averted with sumatriptan therapy. Migraine-related medical costs were lower after sumatriptan was initiated ($18,351 vs $26,192), whereas migraine-related pharmacy costs were lower with prior nontriptan drug therapy ($22,209 vs $74,861). The overall net cost savings after sumatriptan was initiated in these patients was $222,332 ($1249 per patient) with a benefit-to-cost ratio of $5.67 gained for each health care dollar spent from a societal perspective. The incremental cost-effectiveness ratio was $25 for each additional migraine-disability-day averted by using sumatriptan vs nontriptan drug therapy. Sensitivity analysis showed that changes in medical costs had little effect on the ratios and that sumatriptan remained cost-beneficial across a wide range of patient wages. CONCLUSION This study showed that initiation of sumatriptan in patients previously receiving nontriptan therapy was cost-effective and had an economic benefit for patients, employers, and society. Sumatriptan also helped patients and physicians achieve goals recommended by the US Headache Consortium by reducing patients' disability and thus improving their ability to function at work and nonwork activities.

Abstract
Novel cationic antimicrobial peptides, named nigrocin 1 and 2, were isolated from the skin of Rana nigromaculata and their amino acid sequences were determined. These peptides manifested a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against various microorganisms with different specificity. By primary structural analysis, it was revealed that nigrocin 1 has high sequence homology with brevinin 2 but nigrocin 2 has low sequence homology with any other known antimicrobial peptides. To investigate the structure-activity relationship of nigrocin 2, which has a unique primary structure, circular dichroism (CD) and homonuclear nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) studies were performed. CD investigation revealed that nigrocin 2 adopts mainly an alpha-helical structure in trifluoroethanol (TFE)/H(2)O solution, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) micelles, and dodecylphosphocholine micelles. The solution structures of nigrocin 2 in TFE/H(2)O (1:1, v/v) solution and in SDS micelles were determined by homonuclear NMR. Nigrocin 2 consists of a typical amphipathic alpha-helix spanning residues 3-18 in both 50% TFE solution and SDS micelles. From the structural comparison of nigrocin 2 with other known antimicrobial peptides, nigrocin 2 could be classified into the family of antimicrobial peptides containing a single linear amphipathic alpha-helix that potentially disrupts membrane integrity, which would result in cell death.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Ovarian failure is a common sequel to chemo/radiotherapy in patients successfully treated for cancer. Harvesting, cryopreserving and subsequently re-implanting ovarian cortical grafts can be used to re-establish reproductive potential in women with cancer. The safety issue, however, is of great concern because residual disease in autografted ovarian tissues might cause recrudescence of disease. METHODS A total of 30 non-obese diabetic severe combined immunodeficient (NOD/LtSz-SCID) mice were individually xenografted s.c. with frozen-thawed ovarian tissue from 18 patients with lymphoma [13 Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) and 5 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL)]. The animals were autopsied at 16 weeks, or earlier if cachectic. The xenograft, liver, spleen, sternum, para-aortic lymph nodes and thymus were prepared for histology, immunohistochemistry and human DNA microsatellite analysis. RESULTS None of the animals grafted with ovarian tissue from lymphoma patients developed disease. However, all 3 animals grafted with lymph node tissue from an NHL patient developed B-cell lymphomas that were confirmed as human in origin by DNA microsatellite analysis. CONCLUSION Ovarian tissue harvested before high-dose chemotherapy for HL or NHL may not carry a risk of disease transmission by autotransplantation, although the possibility is difficult to exclude completely.

Abstract
Pancreatic beta cells are the source of insulin, which directly lowers blood glucose levels in the body. Our analyses of alpha(1D) gene-knockout (alpha(1D)(-/-)) mice show that the L-type calcium channel, alpha(1D), is required for proper beta cell generation in the postnatal pancreas. Knockout mice were characteristically slightly smaller than their littermates and exhibited hypoinsulinemia and glucose intolerance. However, isolated alpha(1D)(-/-) islets persisted in glucose sensing and insulin secretion, with compensatory overexpression of another L-type channel gene, alpha(1C). Histologically, newborn alpha(1D)(-/-) mice had an equivalent number of islets to wild-type mice. In contrast, adult alpha(1D)(-/-) mice showed a decrease in the number and size of islets, compared with littermate wild-type mice due to a decrease in beta cell generation. TUNEL staining showed that there was no increase in cell death in alpha(1D)(-/-) islets, and a 5-bromo-2' deoxyuridine-labeling (BrdU-labeling) assay illustrated significant reduction in the proliferation rate of beta cells in alpha(1D)(-/-) islets.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Peroral intubation of a self-expanding metal stent is usually difficult in patients with unresectable malignant gastric outlet obstruction, because the delivery systems currently available are not long enough and cannot easily pass the angulated gastroduodenal structure. We carried out a prospective study to assess the efficacy of a coil stent with a newly developed long delivery system, for palliation of unresectable malignant gastric outlet obstruction. PATIENTS AND METHODS In 29 patients with unresectable malignant gastric outlet obstruction, caused by gastric cancer (26 patients), pancreatic head cancer (two patients), or duodenal cancer (one patient), peroral intubation of a self-expanding nickel-titanium coil stent was attempted, using a lengthened delivery system of 150 cm, under endoscopic and fluoroscopic guidance. RESULTS Management was successful in 26 of 29 patients (89.7 %) without immediate major complications. In one patient in whom peroral intubation failed, percutaneous intubation of the coil stent via percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy was done. After insertion of the coil stent, food ingestion with symptomatic improvement with regard to vomiting was achieved in 26 of 27 patients (96.3 %), including the patient with percutaneous stent insertion. During the follow-up period, dysphagia and Karnofsky scores improved significantly. Stent migration occurred in two patients, and tumor ingrowth in another two; re-intervention was done successfully performed in two instances. The mean survival time was 124 days (range 34 - 310 days) in the 22 patients who had no need for re-intervention during follow-up; among these was a patient who experienced stent occlusion by food material, which was easily corrected with endoscopic flushing. CONCLUSIONS Peroral intubation of a self-expanding coil stent using a long delivery system is a safe and effective palliative technique for unresectable malignant gastric outlet obstruction, and significantly improves the quality of life of patients.

Abstract
The possible involvement of phospholipase C (PLC) in the regulation of insulin secretion is not clearly understood and neither its isozymes expressed nor cellular localization in the pancreatic islets is known. By using specific monoclonal antibodies, we have investigated the expression and localization of eight different PLC isozymes, beta1, beta2, beta3, beta4, gamma1, gamma2, delta1, and delta2, in the pancreatic islets of adult mice. Immunohistochemical analysis carried out on paraffin embedded sections showed a distinct pattern of expression for each of the PLC isozymes. In the central part of the islets containing beta cells, a high level of beta4 and moderate levels of beta3 and gamma1 were expressed, whereas PLC-beta1 and -gamma1 were abundantly expressed in the exocrine pancreas. These results demonstrated the heterogeneity in expression of the phospholipase C isozymes in pancreatic islets. It is conceivable that these isozymes are coupled to different receptors and perform selective tasks in the regulation of insulin secretion for glucose homeostasis.

Abstract
In the present study, we investigated effects of estrogen on cell death induced by carboxy-terminal fragment of amyloid precursor protein (CT), a candidate causative substance in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. 17 beta-Estradiol attenuated CT-induced cell death in PC12 cells, whereas 17 alpha-estradiol, nonestrogenic stereoisomer, did not exert any significant protective effect on CT-induced cell death. These results suggest that protective effects of estrogen may be mediated by estrogen receptor (ER) in PC12 cells. To confirm the results, we determined the effects of tamoxifen, an estrogen receptor antagonist. Tamoxifen blocked the protective effects of 17 beta-estradiol, although it did not affect those of 17 alpha-estradiol. Overall, it might be thought that the protective effect of estradiol on CT-induced cell death is achieved by hormonal properties mediated through the estrogen receptor rather than the structural properties as a reducing agent.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study was undertaken to measure the distance and the angle between the anterior part of nasal cavity and the natural ostium of the sphenoid sinus. The anatomical location of the natural ostium according to the direction of surgeon's operating view toward the anterior wall of the sphenoid sinus was also analyzed. STUDY DESIGN This study used careful cadaver dissection under a surgical microscope. METHODS One hundred sagittally sectioned adult cadaveric heads were used. We measured the distances and angles for identifying the natural ostium of the sphenoid sinus using several reference points such as the limen nasi, the sill, and the posteroinferior end of the superior turbinate. In addition, we tried to identify whether the location of the natural ostium is medial or lateral to the posterior end of the superior turbinate. RESULTS The natural ostium of the sphenoid sinus was located at an angle of 35.9 degrees with a distance of 56.5 mm from limen nasi and at an angle of 34.3 degrees with a distance of 62.7 mm from nasal sill. It was located approximately 1 cm above the posteroinferior end of the superior turbinate and at a medial aspect to the posterior end of the superior turbinate in 83% of specimens. CONCLUSIONS We speculate that the posteroinferior end of the superior turbinate is the best landmark for identifying the natural ostium of the sphenoid sinus. Furthermore, the natural ostium should ideally be searched from a superior and medial aspect in relation to the posteroinferior end of the superior turbinate.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study was aimed at investigating the usefulness of serum transferrin receptor (sTfR) and ferritin in anemic patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) compared with bone marrow storage iron and other tests for anemia. METHODS Fifty-five anemic RA patients underwent anemia study. Bone marrow iron stain was performed in 18 patients. sTfR and serum ferritin levels were compared with bone marrow iron stores. RESULTS (1) Mean sTfR concentration was 2.63+/-1.91 mg/L, (2) sTfR correlated with most indicators of anemia, (3) sTfR showed no correlation with CRP and ESR, whereas ferritin did, and (4) sTfR was higher in the "iron depleted" subgroup than in the "iron nondepleted" subgroup in bone marrow study. CONCLUSION The measurement of sTfR and ferritin is useful in finding the cause of anemia in RA and is a possible substitute for invasive bone marrow iron study.

Abstract
Calcium influx through N-type calcium channels mediates synaptic transmission at numerous central synapses and transduces nociceptive information in the spinal dorsal horn. However, the precise role of N-type calcium channels in pain perception is not fully elucidated. To address this issue, we generated and analyzed knockout mice for alpha(1B,) the pore-forming subunit of the N-type calcium channel. Homozygous mutants are viable, fertile, and show normal motor coordination. In small-diameter dorsal root ganglion neurons from mutants the density of calcium channel currents is significantly reduced, which can be accounted for by the abolition of N-type currents. We performed several pain-related behavioral tests using the mutant mice. alpha(1B)-Deficient mice show reduced response to mechanical stimuli in the von Frey test and increased tail flick latency in response to radiant heat, indicating altered spinal reflexes. However, pain response in the hot plate test is normal. In the formalin paw test, the mutant mice exhibit significantly attenuated response in Phase 2, but normal pain behaviors in Phase 1. The response to visceral inflammatory pain caused by acetic acid is also reduced in alpha(1B) knockout mice. These results suggest that the alpha(1B) subunit of N-type calcium channel plays a major role in pain perception by acting at the spinal level, but not at the supraspinal level.

Abstract
The pathogenetic mechanism of nonatopic asthma has not yet been defined. The idea of a possible involvement of autoimmunity in the pathogenesis of nonatopic asthma has been proposed by earlier studies. To evaluate the possible involvement of autoimmune response against bronchial epithelial cell in the pathogenesis of nonatopic asthma, we measured circulating autoantibodies to cultured human bronchial epithelial cell (BEAS-2B cell line) using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. We used stored serum samples form 38 age-matched healthy controls, 26 adult patients with atopic asthma, 16 adult patients with nonatopic asthma, and 12 adult patients with systemic lupus erythematosus. Levels of IgG autoantibodies to bronchial epithelial cell were significantly higher in patients with nonatopic asthma (mean+/-SD of absorbance values; 0.135+/-0.030) and systemic lupus erythematosus (0.293+/-0.181) than in healthy controls (0.112+/-0.016) and patients with atopic asthma (0.116+/-0.031) (p<0.05). This study showed that levels of circulating IgG autoantibodies to bronchial epithelial cell were increased in adult patients with nonatopic asthma. Further studies are needed to evaluate the possible involvement of autoimmune mechanism in the pathogenesis of nonatopic asthma.
