Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia and depression are common and often coexist in the elderly. This study aims to determine the impact of sarcopenia-related muscle traits on depression. METHODS A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study was performed on the summary-level data from the FinnGen cohort to estimate the causal association of appendicular lean mass (ALM), walking pace, or low hand grip strength with depression. Additionally, multivariable MR (MVMR) was performed to assess the dependence of each muscle trait in the causality and adjust the effect of body mass index (BMI). Supplementary backward MR analyses were performed to estimate the effect of depression on sarcopenia-related muscle traits. RESULTS Univariable MR analyses demonstrated that there were causal associations of ALM (odds ratio [OR]: 0.94; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.88-0.99), walking pace (OR: 0.53; 95% CI: 0.32-0.88), and low hand grip strength (OR: 1.20; 95% CI: 1.05-1.38) with depression. MVMR analyses showed that ALM was the only trait that had a significant causal relationship with depression (OR: 0.91; 95% CI: 0.85-0.98) after accounting for the other two muscle traits. Moreover, the independent association of ALM with depression remained (OR: 0.92; 95% CI: 0.85-0.99) after being adjusted by BMI. The backward MR analyses showed no causal associations of depression with any sarcopenia-related muscle traits. CONCLUSION Low muscle mass independently increases the risk of depression. This study determined the muscle-related risk factors of depression, which may help establish the causality between sarcopenia and depression and provide evidence-based recommendations for improving mental health in the elderly.

Abstract
Childhood is a critical period for muscle accumulation. Studies in elders have reported that antioxidant vitamins could improve muscle health. However, limited studies have assessed such associations in children. This study included 243 boys and 183 girls. A seventy-nine-item FFQ was used to investigate dietary nutrients intake. Plasma levels of retinol and α-tocopherol were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography with MS. Dual X-ray absorptiometry was used to assess appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) and total body fat. The ASM index (ASMI) and ASMI Z-score were then calculated. Hand grip strength was measured using a Jamar® Plus+ Hand Dynamometer. Fully adjusted multiple linear regression models showed that for each unit increase in plasma retinol content, ASM, ASMI, left HGS and ASMI Z-score increased by 2·43 × 10-3 kg, 1·33 × 10-3 kg/m2, 3·72 × 10-3 kg and 2·45 × 10-3 in girls, respectively (P < 0·001-0·050). ANCOVA revealed a dose-response relationship between tertiles of plasma retinol level and muscle indicators (Ptrend: 0·001-0·007). The percentage differences between the top and bottom tertiles were 8·38 %, 6·26 %, 13·2 %, 12·1 % and 116 % for ASM, ASMI, left HGS, right HGS and ASMI Z-score in girls, respectively (Pdiff: 0·005-0·020). No such associations were observed in boys. Plasma α-tocopherol levels were not correlated with muscle indicators in either sex. In conclusion, high circulating retinol levels are positively associated with muscle mass and strength in school-age girls.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many studies have defined sarcopenia based on psoas muscle mass using abdominal computed tomography (CT). We hypothesized that sarcopenia can be assessed by measuring pectoralis muscle mass on chest CT and aimed to examine its relationship with the postoperative prognosis of cardiac surgery. METHODS This retrospective study included 189 patients who underwent cardiac surgery via median sternotomy between July 2020 and June 2022. We excluded patients <70 years old, urgent/emergent cases, no chest CT within 90 days before surgery, and cases in which evaluation of the pectoralis muscle was impossible with CT. The pectoralis muscle area (PMA) was measured using a preoperative chest CT. The sarcopenia cut-off value was defined as the lowest sex-specific tertile in PMA at the level of the 4th thoracic vertebrae. RESULTS Eighty patients were included. The lower tertile were classified as the sarcopenia group (SG) (n = 26) and the rest as the non-sarcopenia group (NSG) (n = 54). In the SG, 1-year survival was significantly worse than that in NSG (NSG: 92.7% vs. SG: 54.9%, p < 0.0001). In the multivariate model, sarcopenia was an independent risk factor for mid-term all-cause death (hazard ratio, 4.89; 95% confidence interval: 1.14-21.0, p = 0.033). CONCLUSION Preoperative sarcopenia defined using PMA was associated with poor mid-term survival after elective cardiac surgery via median sternotomy. The pectoralis muscle mass observed through a chest CT could be used for preoperative risk scoring in older patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

Abstract
Background Although an association between sarcopenia and cognitive function has been demonstrated, the directional association remains unclear. The present study aimed to evaluate the longitudinal reciprocal relationship and identify the possible temporal sequence between sarcopenia and cognitive function in older Chinese adults. Methods Data were collected from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) baseline survey in 2011 and the follow-up survey in 2015. Cognitive function was measured by episodic memory and executive function. Sarcopenia status (non-sarcopenia, possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia) was defined based on the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 criteria. Linear regression analysis and ordinal logistic regression analysis were employed to investigate the relationship between baseline sarcopenia status and follow-up cognition, as well as the association of baseline cognition with follow-up sarcopenia status, respectively. A cross-lagged panel analysis was performed to simultaneously evaluate the bidirectional association and the strength of the temporal relationship. Results Of 2689 participants, the median age was 65.0 years and 1249 (46.5%) were female. After adjusting for potential confounders and baseline measurements, baseline sarcopenia status was dose-dependently associated with subsequent cognitive scores (β = -0.45; P for trend = 0.001), and baseline cognitive scores (in tertiles) were also dose-dependently associated with subsequent sarcopenia status (odds ratio (OR) = 0.86; P for trend = 0.017). The cross-lagged panel analysis indicated that the standardised effect size of sarcopenia status on cognitive function (β = -0.09; P < 0.001) is larger relative to the effect of cognitive function on sarcopenia status (β = -0.05; P = 0.019). Conclusions There is a longitudinal, bidirectional relationship between sarcopenia status and cognitive function in older Chinese adults. Sarcopenia is likely the driving force in these dynamic associations. These findings imply that interventions in either sarcopenia or cognitive decline may have the ability to generate reciprocal benefits over time. More research is warranted to confirm these findings and to further elucidate underlying causal pathways.

Abstract
Malnutrition and sarcopenia are highly prevalent in patients with decompensated cirrhosis and are associated with poorer clinical outcomes. Their pathophysiology is complex and multifactorial, with protein-calorie malnutrition, systemic inflammation, reduced glycogen stores and hormonal imbalances all well reported. The direct contribution of portal hypertension to these driving factors is however not widely documented in the literature. This review details the specific mechanisms by which portal hypertension directly contributes to the development of malnutrition and sarcopenia in cirrhosis. We summarise the existing literature describing treatment strategies that specifically aim to reduce portal pressures and their impact on nutritional and muscle outcomes, which is particularly relevant to those with end-stage disease awaiting liver transplantation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Myosteatosis indicates pathological fat infiltration in muscles and is regarded as a distinct disease from sarcopenia. This muscular condition exhibits a link to muscle fiber disarrangement coinciding with disrupted muscle contractility and weakened mechanical action, mirrored as decreased muscle quality. However, the relationship between handgrip strength (HGS) and computed tomography-defined myosteatosis among cirrhosis is unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between HGS and myosteatosis and determine gender-specific cutoffs regarding HGS to identify myosteatotic subjects. METHODS We prospectively recruited 221 cirrhotic patients. The presence of myosteatosis was determined according to intramuscular adipose tissue content. The relationship between HGS and myosteatosis was evaluated according to Spearman correlation coefficient, area under the ROC curve, and multivariate logistic regression analysis. Moreover, a model based on the classification and regression tree method was generated. RESULTS Our results showed that HGS exhibits modestly negative correlation with intramuscular adipose tissue content in the entire cohort (rs = -0.269, P < .001) and across diverse subgroups precluding extremely deteriorating conditions. After controlling for multiple clinical features and biochemical parameters, HGS (odds ratio = 0.921, P = .010) was independently associated with myosteatosis in addition to age and body mass index. On applying the Japan Society of Hepatology-recommended cutoffs, an area under the ROC curve of HGS was 0.627 with a sensitivity of 77.4% and a specificity of 47.9%. The decision tree including body mass index and low HGS correctly classified ~85% of the cases in development and validation sets. CONCLUSIONS HGS was in close relation to myosteatosis among inpatients with cirrhosis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is characterised by decreased muscle mass, diminished muscle strength and/or reduced physical performance and a high percentage of body fat (PBF). Conventional-load resistance exercise (CRE) may be difficult for older people with SO owing to their declining physical functions. Low-load resistance exercise (LRE) combined with blood flow restriction (BFR; LRE-BFR) is a viable alternative to CRE for improving muscle mass and strength and potential exercise mode for managing SO. This study has two objectives: (1) to comprehensively evaluate the efficacy of CRE and LRE-BFR in improving body composition, muscle strength, physical performance, haematological parameters, cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors and quality of life and (2) to compare the efficacy of CRE and LRE-BFR and explore their potential mechanisms. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This work is a 12-week assessor-blinded randomised clinical trial that will be conducted thrice a week. Sarcopenia will be defined using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019, and obesity will be determined using the criteria developed by the World Health Organization. Community-dwelling older people aged ≥ 65 years will be screened as the participants using inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 33 participants will be randomised into a CRE group (n = 11), an LRE-BFR group (n = 11) and a control group that will be given only health education (n = 11). The primary outcomes will be knee extensor strength and PBF, and the secondary outcomes will be body composition, anthropometric measurements, muscle strength of upper limbs, physical performance, haematological parameters, CVD risk factors and quality of life. The outcomes will be measured at the baseline (week 0), end of the intervention (week 12) and follow up (week 24). All the collected data will be analysed following the intention-to-treat principle. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The Ethics Research Committee has approved this study (approval No. CMEC-2022-KT-51). Changes or developments in this study will be reported at www.chictr.org.cn . Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic respiratory disease that is associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. The burden of respiratory symptoms and airflow limitation can translate to reduced physical activity, in turn contributing to poor exercise capacity, muscle dysfunction, and body composition abnormalities. These extrapulmonary features of the disease are targeted during pulmonary rehabilitation, which provides patients with tailored therapies to improve the physical and emotional status. Patients with COPD can be divided into metabolic phenotypes, including cachectic, sarcopenic, normal weight, obese, and sarcopenic with hidden obesity. To date, there have been many studies performed investigating the individual effects of exercise training programs as well as nutritional and pharmacological treatments to improve exercise capacity and body composition in patients with COPD. However, little research is available investigating the combined effect of exercise training with nutritional or pharmacological treatments on these outcomes. Therefore, this review focuses on exploring the potential additional beneficial effects of combinations of exercise training and nutritional or pharmacological treatments to target exercise capacity and body composition in patients with COPD with different metabolic phenotypes.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is a disease characterized by decreased muscle mass and strength, affecting 20-70% of patients with cirrhosis, and is associated with poor prognosis, complications, and high mortality. At present, the epidemiological investigation of sarcopenia in patients with liver cirrhosis is relatively limited, and because of the differences in population characteristics, regions, diagnostic criteria and diagnostic tools, the prevalence of sarcopenia in various studies varies greatly. The definition of sarcopenia in this study adopted the criteria of the Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia (AWGS 2019), including muscle mass and muscle strength / physical performance. A total of 271 patients with liver cirrhosis were included in this cross-sectional study to explore the influencing factors of sarcopenia in patients with liver cirrhosis. The prevalence of sarcopenia was 27.7%, 27.3% in male and 28.4% in female. The results of binary logistic regression analysis showed that age, physical activity, BMI, mid-upper arm muscle circumference, hepatic encephalopathy, nutritional status, alkaline phosphatase, albumin and total cholesterol were significantly correlated with the occurrence of sarcopenia in patients with liver cirrhosis. After adjusting for the potential influencing factors, it was found that the correlation between age and sarcopenia was weakened (OR = 0.870, 95% CI 0.338-2.239). The current findings show that sarcopenia is common in patients with cirrhosis and is independently associated with age, physical activity, BMI, nutritional status, and albumin, and serum alkaline phosphatase and total cholesterol are associated with the development of sarcopenia. Regular exercise may help maintain the grip strength of patients with cirrhosis and delay the deterioration of liver function.

Abstract
Introduction It's not clear whether there are differences in musculoskeletal damage and body composition among different age groups of type 2 diabetes. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to analyze the difference between early-onset type 2 diabetes (EOT2D) and non-early-onset type 2 diabetes (NOT2D) in musculoskeletal damage. Methods A total of 964 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were selected by 1:1 propensity score matching, including 534 males and 430 females, with an average age of 52 ± 7 years and an average course of 10 ± 8.5 years. Bone mineral density and body composition were measured, and combined with biochemical tests, linear regression and binary logic regression were used to analyze the relationship between EOT2D, NOT2D and musculoskeletal damage. In addition, 414 patients with T2DM were selected according to whether they were hospitalized twice or not, and the median follow-up period was 44 months. COX survival analysis further elucidates the relationship between EOT2D, NOT2D and musculoskeletal damage. Results Compared with patients with non-early-onset type 2 diabetes, A/G was negatively correlated with the age of onset, and had statistical significance. EOT2D has a higher risk of sarcopenia, osteoporosis and even musculoskeletal damage. With the prolongation of the course of the disease, the risk of muscle mass and/or bone mineral density decrease in EOT2D increases. Conclusion EOT2D brings a greater risk of sarcopenia and/or osteoporosis, as well as a higher risk of reduced ASM and BMD. In addition, fat distribution may be more central.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We explored the relationships between sarcopenia (SP), osteoporosis (OP), obesity (OB), (alone and in combination) with physical frailty (PF) in a multi-ethnic, population-based study of Asians aged ≥ 60 years. METHODS Participants were enrolled from the PopulatION HEalth and Eye Disease PRofile in Elderly Singaporeans Study (PIONEER) study. PF was defined using the modified Fried phenotype; SP using the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019; OP using bone mineral density scores; and OB using the fat mass index. Modified Poisson regression models investigated the associations between exposures and PF, and the relative excess rates of PF due to interactions (RERI) to determine synergistic or antagonistic interactions. RESULTS Of the 2643 participants, 54.8% was female; and 49.8%, 25.1%, 25.0% were Chinese, Indians, and Malays, respectively. 25%, 19.0% and 6.7% participants had OB only, SP only, and OP only, respectively. A total of 356 (17.5%), 151 (7.4%) and 97 (4.8%) had osteosarcopenia (OSP), sarcopenic obesity (SOB) and osteo-obesity (OOB), respectively; while 70 (3.5%) had all 3 morbid conditions (osteosarcopenic obesity, OSO). Both SP only and OB only were strongly associated with increased rates of PF (RR: 2.53, 95% CI: 1.95, 3.29; RR: 2.05, 95% CI: 1.58, 2.66 respectively); but not OP. Those with OSP, OOB and SOB were also associated with high risks of PF (RR: 2.82, 95% CI: 2.16, 3.68; RR: 2.34, 95% CI: 1.69, 3.23; and RR: 2.58, 95% CI: 1.95, 3.41, respectively) compared to robust individuals. Critically, individuals with OSO had the highest relative risk of having PF (RR: 3.06, CI: 2.28, 4.11). Only the sarcopenia-obesity interaction was significant, demonstrating negative synergism (antagonism). The concurrent presence of SP and OB was associated with a 100% lower rate of PF compared to the sum of the relatively rates of SP only and OB only. CONCLUSION The prevalence of SP, OB and OP, alone and combined, is substantial in older Asians and their early identification is needed to mitigate the risk of frailty. OB may interact with SP in an antagonistic manner to moderate rates of frailty. Further longitudinal studies are needed to address causality and mechanistic underpinnings our findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Frailty and sarcopenia have been extensively studied in heart failure (HF) patients, but their coexistence is unknown. The aim of this work is to describe the coexistence of these conditions in a sample of HF outpatients and its association with the use of medication and left-ventricular ejection fraction. METHODS Participants in this cross-sectional study were recruited from a HF outpatients' clinic in northern Portugal. Frailty phenotype was assessed according to Fried et al. Sarcopenia was evaluated according to the revised consensus of the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People. RESULTS A total of 136 HF outpatients (33.8% women, median age 59 years) integrated this study. Frailty and sarcopenia accounted for 15.4% and 18.4% of the sample, respectively. Coexistence of frailty and sarcopenia was found in 8.1% of the participants, while 17.6% had only one of the conditions. In multivariable analysis (n = 132), increasing age (OR = 1.13;95%CI = 1.06,1.20), being a woman (OR = 65.65;95%CI = 13.50, 319.15), having heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) (OR = 5.61; 95%CI = 1.22, 25.76), and using antidepressants (OR = 11.05; 95%CI = 2.50, 48.82), anticoagulants (OR = 6.11; 95%CI = 1.69, 22.07), furosemide (OR = 3.95; 95%CI = 1.07, 14.55), and acetylsalicylic acid (OR = 5.01; 95%CI = 1.10, 22.90) were associated with increased likelihood of having coexistence of frailty and sarcopenia, while using statins showed the inverse effect (OR = 0.06; 95%CI = 0.01, 0.30). CONCLUSIONS The relatively low frequency of coexistence of frailty and sarcopenia signifies that each of these two conditions still deserve individual attention from health professionals in their clinical practice and should be screened separately. Being a woman, older age, having HFpEF, using anticoagulants, antidepressants, loop diuretics and acetylsalicylic acid, and not using statins, were associated with having concomitant frailty and sarcopenia. These patients can potentially benefit from interventions that impact their quality of life such as nutritional and mental health interventions and exercise training.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Sarcopenic obesity (SO), which refers to the coexistence of sarcopenia and obesity. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was first to assess the prevalence of SO in patients with diabetes, and second, to evaluate possible adverse outcomes. METHODS This study was conducted in adherence to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines and the data were collated by means of meta-analysis and narrative synthesis. We comprehensively and systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, CBM, CNKI, Wanfang Database from the establishment of the database to December 2022, and collected related studies on SO in patients with diabetes. Using Stata 16.0 software to pool the estimates for the prevalence of SO in patients with diabetes, and a descriptive systematic review of possible adverse outcomes was performed. RESULTS The prevalence of 20 included studies were pooled by a random-effects model, which showed that the prevalence of SO in patients with diabetes was 27%. Subgroup analyses showed that the prevalence of SO was higher among studies using BIA (24%) to assess muscle mass, and those focused on literature of moderate-quality (29%), being published from 2013 to 2016 (29%), female patients with diabetes (17%), North Americans (30%). SO in patients with diabetes can lead to adverse outcomes including decreased glomerular filtration rate, massive proteinuria, cognitive decline, and insulin resistance. CONCLUSION The systematic review and meta-analysis revealed a prevalence of 27% for SO in patients with diabetes, and it is associated with potential serious adverse outcomes. Therefore, we should attach importance to the screening of SO in patients with diabetes and early detection of susceptible groups, then selecting appropriate interventions to reduce the occurrence of it and various adverse outcomes in this demographic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have suggested that sarcopenia is associated with an increased treatment toxicity in patients with cancer. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between sarcopenia and anthracycline-related cardiotoxicity. METHODS Patients who received anthracycline-based chemotherapy between 2014 and 2018 and had baseline abdominal CT and baseline and follow-up echocardiography after anthracycline treatment were included. European Society of Cardiology ejection fraction criteria and American Society of Echocardiography diastolic dysfunction criteria were used for definition of cardiotoxicity. Sarcopenia was defined on the basis of skeletal muscle index (SMI) and psoas muscle index (PMI) calculated on CT images at L3 and L4 vertebra levels. RESULTS A total of 166 patients (75 men and 91 women) were included. Sarcopenia was determined in 33 patients (19.9%) according to L3-SMI, in 17 patients (10.2%) according to L4-SMI and in 45 patients (27.1%) according to PMI. 27 patients (16.3%) developed cardiotoxicity. PMI and L3-SMI were significantly associated with an increased risk of cardiotoxicity (L3-SMI: HR=3.27, 95% CI 1.32 to 8.11, p=0.01; PMI: HR=3.71, 95% CI 1.58 to 8.73, p=0.003). CONCLUSIONS This is the first study demonstrating a significant association between CT-diagnosed sarcopenia and anthracycline-related cardiotoxicity. Routine CT scans performed for cancer staging may help clinicians identify high-risk patients in whom closer follow-up or cardioprotective measures should be considered.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Frailty and sarcopenia are typical geriatric conditions with a complex pathophysiology. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are key regulators of age-related diseases, but the mechanisms underlying physical frailty, sarcopenia, and EVs are not well understood. METHODS A systematic literature review was conducted to examine the evidence supporting an association between EVs and physical frailty and/or sarcopenia by searching the electronic databases, including the Cochrane Library, PubMed, and Embase, from January 2000 to January 2021. RESULTS A total of 216 cross-sectional studies were retrieved, and after the removal of 43 duplicate records, the title and abstract of 167 articles were screened, identifying 6 relevant articles for full-text review. Of the studies five met the inclusion criteria, and heterogeneity among studies was high. There is controversy regarding whether frailty and/or sarcopenia are related to circulating EV levels; however, the cargo of EVs has been associated with frailty and sarcopenia in various ways, such as microRNAs, mitochondrial-derived vesicles (MDVs), and protein cargoes. CONCLUSION Recent studies, although limited, depicted that EVs could be one of the underlying mechanisms of frailty and/or sarcopenia. There is a possibility that physical frailty and sarcopenia may have specific EV concentrations and cargo profiles; however, further research is required to fully understand the mechanisms and identify potential biomarkers and early preventative strategies for physical frailty and sarcopenia.

Abstract
Derangements of body composition affect surgical outcomes. Chronic statin use may induce muscle wasting and impair muscle tissue quality. Aim of this study was to evaluate the association of chronic statin use, skeletal muscle area (SMA), myosteatosis and major postoperative morbidity. Between 2011 and 2021, patients undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy or total gastrectomy for cancer, and using statins since at least 1 year, were retrospective studied. SMA and myosteatosis were measured at CT scan. The cut-off for SMA and myosteatosis were determined using ROC curve and considering severe complications as the binary outcome. The presence of myopenia was defined when SMA was lower that the cut-off. A multivariable logistic regression was applied to assess the association between several factors and severe complications. After a matching procedure (1:1) for key baseline risk factors (ASA; age; Charlson comorbidity index; tumor site; intraoperative blood loss), a final sample of 104 patients, of which 52 treated and 52 not treated with statins, was obtained. The median age was 75 years, with an ASA score ≥ 3 in 63% of the cases. SMA (OR 5.119, 95% CI 1.053-24.865) and myosteatosis (OR 4.234, 95% CI 1.511-11.866) below the cut-off values were significantly associated with major morbidity. Statin use was predictive of major complication only in patients with preoperative myopenia (OR 5.449, 95% CI 1.054-28.158). Myopenia and myosteatosis were independently associated with an increased risk of severe complications. Statin use was associated with a higher risk of having major morbidity only in the subgroup of patients with myopenia.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the association between weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) and sarcopenic obesity (SO) in patients with maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). Methods: A multicenter, cross-sectional study that included 3311 adult MHD patients was conducted in 20 hemodialysis (HD) centers from June 1, 2021, to August 30, 2021. Body composition was evaluated by body composition monitor based on bioimpedance spectroscopy. Hand grip strength was measured by CAMRY® dynamometer. WWI was calculated as waist circumference (cm) divided by the square root of body weight (kg). Multiple logistic regression models, spearman correlation analysis, and receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were conducted. Results: The median age of the study was 55 years, and 39.4% of patients were female. The prevalence of SO was 22.7% in the total population, and patients with SO had higher WWI. Higher WWI quartiles were independently associated with a higher risk of SO in men after adjusting for potential confounders, including age, dialysis vintage, body mass index, biochemical indicators, and various medical histories; the odds ratio (OR) of SO was highest in the fourth quartile of the WWI (OR: 4.08, 95% confidence interval: 2.65-6.27, P for trend <0.001). Age-adjusted WWI provided a better diagnostic power than WWI only for SO in men (area under the ROC curve: 0.72 vs. 0.68, P < 0.001). WWI was not associated with SO in female HD patients. Conclusion: WWI is independently associated with SO in male but not female MHD patients. This anthropometric index is simple to calculate, making it applicable in clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia, defined as low skeletal muscle mass, affects up to 60% of rectal adenocarcinoma patients receiving neoadjuvant chemoradiation (NACRT), with negative impact on patient outcomes. Identifying modifiable risk factors may decrease morbidity and mortality. METHODS A retrospective review of rectal cancer patients from a single academic center from 2006 to 2020 was performed. Sixty-nine patients with pre- and post-NACRT CT imaging were included. Skeletal muscle index (SMI) was calculated as total L3 skeletal muscle divided by height squared. Sarcopenia thresholds were 52.4 cm2/m2 for men and 38.5 cm2/m2 for women. Student T-test, chi-square test, multivariable regression, and multivariable Cox hazard analysis were performed. RESULTS 62.3% of patients lost SMI from pre- to post-NACRT imaging, with a mean change of -7.8% (±19.9%). Eleven (15.9%) patients were sarcopenic at presentation, increasing to 20 (29.0%) following NACRT. Mean SMI decreased from 49.0 cm2/m2 (95% CI: 42.0 cm2/m2-56.0 cm2/m2) to 38.2 cm2/m2 (95% CI: 33.6 cm2/m2-42.9 cm2/m2) (P = .003). Pre-NACRT sarcopenia correlated with post-NACRT sarcopenia (OR 20.6, P = .002). Percent decrease in SMI was associated with a 5% increased mortality risk. CONCLUSION The presence of sarcopenia at diagnosis and its association with post-NACRT sarcopenia suggests an opportunity for a high-impact intervention.

Abstract
This study aimed to detect the functional and emotional impact of COVID-19 lockdown on institutionalized older adults with sarcopenia during a 15-month follow-up. A prospective longitudinal cohort study was conducted in a nursing home. Participants were screened for sarcopenia, and those with a score of ≥4 points according to SARC-F questionnaire were included. Assessments were performed pre-lockdown (T1), 12 months (T2) after, and at a 15-month follow-up (T3). Functional measurements included chair stand test, handgrip, biceps brachii and quadriceps femoris strengths, appendicular skeletal mass, gait speed, Short Physical Performance Battery, and Timed Up-and-Go test. Emotional assessments included Short-Form Health Survey, Geriatric Depression Scale-Short Form, and the Mini-Mental State Examination. The analyzed sample showed a reduction in bicep strength, and other upper and lower limb strength variables showed a decreasing trend with no changes regarding muscle mass. Physical performance showed a change, specifically a deterioration in the subtest related to balance. Cognitive and emotional components were affected and quality of life was decreased. It is of paramount importance to focus on sarcopenic older adults since their characteristics can deteriorate when isolation measures are conducted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with decompensated cirrhosis (DC) are prone to skeletal muscle loss, namely, sarcopenia, before liver transplantation (LT). While sarcopenia is reportedly associated with adverse outcomes after LT, these findings are limited owing to mixed diseases and retrospective data. We investigated the association between sarcopenia and 1-year overall survival (OS) in patients with DC after LT and established and validated a prediction model for postoperative OS based on sarcopenia. METHODS Overall, 222 consecutive patients who underwent LT at our centre were registered between September 2020 and June 2022. Third lumbar spine skeletal muscle mass index was measured using computed tomography. Patients were divided into sarcopenia and non-sarcopenia groups according to the skeletal muscle mass index, and baseline data and postoperative outcomes were collected, compared and analysed. The primary outcome was the 1-year OS after LT. We established a dynamic nomogram of the OS predictive model. RESULTS We included 177 DC patients [mean (standard deviation) age, 50.2 ± 9.3 years; 52 women (29.4%)]; 73 (41.2%) had sarcopenia. The mean (standard deviation) body mass index was 22.6 ± 4.5 kg/m2 , 28 (15.8%) patients had weight loss ≥5% within 6 months before admission, and the mean (standard deviation) model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score was 18.4 ± 7.9. Patients with sarcopenia had a longer duration of intensive care unit stay (4.1 ± 2.2 vs. 3.1 ± 1.1 days, P = 0.008), higher rate of major complications (45.2% vs. 22.1%, P = 0.001) and higher postoperative mortality (15.1% vs. 2.9%, P = 0.003) than those without sarcopenia. The median 1-year OS after surgery was shorter in patients with sarcopenia than in those without (P < 0.001). Sarcopenia [hazard ratio (HR), 2.54; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.54-5.63; P = 0.022], weight loss ≥5% (HR, 2.46; 95% CI, 1.39-5.09; P = 0.015) and MELD score (HR, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.01-1.09; P = 0.009) were independent risk factors associated with 1-year OS. The area under the curve of the established dynamic nomogram was 0.774, the calibration curve showed good consistency, and analysis of the decision curve showed more clinical benefits than the MELD score alone. High-risk patients (>102.9 points calculated using the nomogram) had a significantly reduced survival rate. CONCLUSIONS Sarcopenia is associated with adverse outcomes after LT in patients with DC. High-risk patients should be classified by dynamic nomogram upon admission.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Surgeons have historically used age as a preoperative predictor of postoperative outcomes. Sarcopenia, the loss of skeletal muscle mass due to disease or biological age, has been proposed as a more accurate risk predictor. The prognostic value of sarcopenia assessment in surgical patients remains poorly understood. Therefore, the authors aimed to synthesize the available literature and investigate the impact of sarcopenia on perioperative and postoperative outcomes across all surgical specialties. METHODS The authors systematically assessed the prognostic value of sarcopenia on postoperative outcomes by conducting a systematic review and meta-analysis according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, searching the PubMed/MEDLINE and EMBASE databases from inception to 1st October 2022. Their primary outcomes were complication occurrence, mortality, length of operation and hospital stay, discharge to home, and postdischarge survival rate at 1, 3, and 5 years. Subgroup analysis was performed by stratifying complications according to the Clavien-Dindo classification system. Sensitivity analysis was performed by focusing on studies with an oncological, cardiovascular, emergency, or transplant surgery population and on those of higher quality or prospective study design. RESULTS A total of 294 studies comprising 97 643 patients, of which 33 070 had sarcopenia, were included in our analysis. Sarcopenia was associated with significantly poorer postoperative outcomes, including greater mortality, complication occurrence, length of hospital stay, and lower rates of discharge to home (all P <0.00001). A significantly lower survival rate in patients with sarcopenia was noted at 1, 3, and 5 years (all P <0.00001) after surgery. Subgroup analysis confirmed higher rates of complications and mortality in oncological (both P <0.00001), cardiovascular (both P <0.00001), and emergency ( P =0.03 and P =0.04, respectively) patients with sarcopenia. In the transplant surgery cohort, mortality was significantly higher in patients with sarcopenia ( P <0.00001). Among all patients undergoing surgery for inflammatory bowel disease, the frequency of complications was significantly increased among sarcopenic patients ( P =0.007). Sensitivity analysis based on higher quality studies and prospective studies showed that sarcopenia remained a significant predictor of mortality and complication occurrence (all P <0.00001). CONCLUSION Sarcopenia is a significant predictor of poorer outcomes in surgical patients. Preoperative assessment of sarcopenia can help surgeons identify patients at risk, critically balance eligibility, and refine perioperative management. Large-scale studies are required to further validate the importance of sarcopenia as a prognostic indicator of perioperative risk, especially in surgical subspecialties.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate whether the quality of skeletal muscle mass could predict short-term readmission in patients with hepatic encephalopathy (HE). METHOD Patients with HE were enrolled from 2018 to 2022. Sarcopenia and myosteatosis were defined using the L3 skeletal muscle index (SMI) and skeletal muscle density (SMD) obtained from CT imaging. MELD-Sarcopenia score was calculated. Multivariable analysis and multiple linear regression were applied to identify predictors of 30-day readmission and length of hospitalization. RESULTS 123 patients with HE were included. 55 (44.7%) and 87 (70.7%) patients were identified with sarcopenia and myosteatosis, respectively. Patients with sarcopenia exhibited a higher prevalence of myosteatosis, lower SMI and SMD (p < 0.05). Patients with myosteatosis were older, had a lower body mass index, a higher neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and MELD-sarcopenia scores (p < 0.05). 10 (8.1%) patients were readmitted within 30 days. The readmitted group had a higher MELD-sarcopenia score (25.0 ± 6.6 vs. 19.5 ± 7.8, p = 0.034) and lower L3 SMD (28.3 ± 5.9 vs. 33.8 ± 6.9, p = 0.015). In the multivariable analysis, MELD-sarcopenia score (95% CI 1.388 [1.074-1.793], p = 0.012) and SMD (95% CI 0.778 [0.610-0.991], p = 0.042) were found to be significantly associated with the 30-day readmission of patients with HE. Age (p = 0.028), alcohol liver disease (p = 0.025), and hypertension (p = 0.003) were associated with the length of hospitalization for patients with HE. CONCLUSIONS The MELD-sarcopenia score and SMD were identified as predictive factors for short-term readmission in patients diagnosed as HE.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW As our population ages, the number of elderly patients with advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD) will increase. In this review we explore risk factors for liver injury, noninvasive assessment of liver disease, complications of cirrhosis, and management of frailty and sarcopenia in the older patient with ACLD. RECENT FINDINGS Multiple guidelines regarding ACLD have been updated over the past few years. New cutoffs for FIB-4 and NAFLD (MASLD - Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatotic Liver Disease) fibrosis scores for elderly patients are being validated. Older patients with MASLD benefit from caloric restriction, exercise programs, and GLP-1 agonists. Patients with ACLD need to be screened for alcohol use disorder with modified scoring systems, and if positive, benefit from referral to chemical dependency programs. Carvedilol and diuretics may safely be used in the elderly for portal hypertension and ascites, respectively, with careful monitoring. Malnutrition, frailty, sarcopenia, and bone mineral disease are common in older patients with ACLD, and early intervention may improve outcomes. Early identification of ACLD in elderly patients allows us to manage risk factors for liver injury, screen for complications, and implement lifestyle and pharmacological therapy to reduce decompensation and death. Future studies may clarify the role of noninvasive imaging in assessing liver fibrosis in the elderly and optimal interventions for nutrition, frailty, sarcopenia, bone health in addition to reevaluation of antibiotic prophylaxis for liver conditions with rising antibiotic resistance.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Emerging evidence suggests that deconditioned patients benefit most from prehabilitation before colorectal cancer surgery. So far, selecting patients with poor muscle status and high perioperative risk remains challenging. Therefore, this study evaluates the potential of the CT-derived Skeletal Muscle Index (SMI), representing muscle mass, and of the Muscle Radiation Attenuation (MRA), a measure of muscle quality, for risk stratification in colorectal cancer patients. METHODS In this retrospective, single-center observational study, 207 patients with resection of colorectal adenocarcinoma between January 2016 and December 2020 were included. The Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), postoperative complications, length of hospital stay, and survival were recorded. Data were analyzed using multivariable linear, logistic, and Cox proportional hazards regression models adjusted for age, sex, BMI, CCI, neoadjuvant therapy, tumor stage, and surgery type. RESULTS An increase of the MRA was associated with fewer postoperative complications (anastomotic leakage and pneumonia) and lesser severity according to the Clavien-Dindo classification, shorter hospital stays, and prolonged survival (Hazard ratio: 0.63 [95%CI: 0.49-0.81], p < 0.001). No relevant associations were found between the SMI and postoperative complications, length of hospital stay, or survival. CONCLUSION The easy-to-raise MRA serves as a more reliable tool than the SMI for identifying high-risk patients with poor muscle status before colorectal surgery. Those patients may benefit most from prehabilitation, which has to be proven in future interventional trials.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE Sarcopenia is characterized by a decline in muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical performance. Persistent inflammation may lead to muscle wasting. This research aims to determine the prevalence and associated factors of sarcopenia in axial spondyloarthritis (ax-SpA). METHOD A cross-sectional study of 104 ax-SpA patients who met the 2009 ASAS criteria was conducted at Phramongkutklao Hospital between January 2020 and February 2021. Sarcopenia-related factors and disease characteristics were recorded. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Strength, ambulation, rising from a chair, stair climbing and history of falling (SARC-F) was evaluated. Muscle strength was measured by hand grip strength and chair stand time. Physical performance was assessed by 6-m walk and time up and go tests. Logistic regression was performed to identify factors associated with sarcopenia. RESULTS Most patients were male (74%), with a mean (standard deviation, SD) age and disease duration of 42.6 (12.2) and 8.3 (8.5) years, respectively. The mean BMI (SD) was 23.8 (4.4). The prevalence of sarcopenia was 22.1%. There were no differences in disease activity (BASDAI and ASDAS) between ax-SpA patients with and without sarcopenia. Age, low BMI, and BASFI score were independently associated with sarcopenia, with adjusted odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of 1.08 (1.01-1.16), 0.39 (0.25-0.63), and 1.41 (1.07-1.86), respectively. CONCLUSION Sarcopenia is common in ax-SpA patients and is independently associated with older age, low BMI, and high BASFI score but not disease activity. Key Points • Despite the fact that ax-SpA patients are typically young, sarcopenia is frequently observed within this population. • Sarcopenia in ax-SpA patients has an independent association with older age, low BMI, and functional limitations (high BASFI scores). • Sarcopenia in ax-SpA patients is not associated with disease activity; however, early treatment to prevent functional limitations may prevent sarcopenia in ax-SpA patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE Sarcopenia is associated with poor short- and long-term patient outcomes following colorectal surgery. Despite postoperative ileus (POI) being a major complication following colorectal surgery, the predictive value of sarcopenia for POI is unclear. We assessed the association between sarcopenia and POI in patients with colorectal cancer. METHODS Elective colorectal cancer surgery patients were retrospectively included (2018-2022). The cross-sectional psoas area was calculated using preoperative staging imaging at the level of the 3rd lumbar vertebrae. Sarcopenia was determined using gender-specific cut-offs. The primary outcome POI was defined as not achieving GI-2 by day 4. Demographics, operative characteristics, and complications were compared via univariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS Of 297 patients, 67 (22.6%) were sarcopenic. Patients with sarcopenia were older (median 74 (IQR 67-82) vs. 69 (58-76) years, p < 0.001) and had lower body mass index (median 24.4 (IQR 22.2-28.6) vs. 28.8 (24.9-31.9) kg/m2, p < 0.001). POI was significantly more prevalent in patients with sarcopenia (41.8% vs. 26.5%, p = 0.016). Overall rate of complications (85.1% vs. 68.3%, p = 0.007), Calvien-Dindo grade > 3 (13.4% vs. 10.0%, p = 0.026) and length of stay were increased in patients with sarcopenia (median 7 (IQR 5-12) vs. 6 (4-8) days, p = 0.013). Anastomotic leak rate was higher in patients with sarcopenia although the difference was not statistically significant (7.5% vs. 2.6%, p = 0.064). Multivariate analysis demonstrated sarcopenia (OR 2.0, 95% CI 1.1-3.8), male sex (OR 1.9, 95% CI 1.0-3.5), postoperative hypokalemia (OR 3.2, 95% CI 1.6-6.5) and increased opioid use (OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.3-4.3) were predictive of POI. CONCLUSION Sarcopenia demonstrates an association with POI. Future research towards truly identifying the predictive value of sarcopenia for postoperative complications could improve informed consent and operative planning for surgical patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the frequency of sexual dysfunction (SD) and the association between SD and body composition abnormalities, such as sarcopenia, obesity, and sarcopenic obesity. METHODS Older adults (≥65 years) were included. Sarcopenic obesity was diagnosed by using newly defined ESPEN-EASO diagram. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People criteria. Obesity was defined using the fat percentile cut-offs suggested by ESPEN-EASO. SD was determined by Arizona Sexual Experience Scale (ASEX). RESULTS Two-hundred and sixty-seven volunteers (64.4% female, mean age 73.63 ± 6.22 years) participated in this study. One-hundred seventy-eight individuals (66.7%) had SD. It was present in 83.1% and 36.8% of the females and males, respectively (p < 0.0001). There was no association between SD and sarcopenia alone (OR: 1.359, 95% CI: 0.650-2.838, p = 0.415) or obesity alone (OR: 0.986, 95% CI: 0.543-1.791, p = 0.963). Sarcopenic obesity was significantly associated with SD (OR: 9.116, 95% CI: 1.173-70.851, p = 0.035). However, this significance was lost after the model was adjusted for gender, marital status, and comorbidities (OR: 4.676, 95% CI: 0.578-37.801, p = 0.148). CONCLUSIONS SD was present in 66.7% of the older adults and was not associated with sarcopenia, obesity, or sarcopenic obesity. Further longitudinal studies are needed on this topic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Increasing dietary protein intake can be an efficient strategy to prevent sarcopenia. Nevertheless, due to the discrepancy in the population and their dietary pattern, evidence suggested the effects of dietary protein amount or source on sarcopenia prevention varies. This prospective cohort study investigated the correlation between dietary protein intakes or sources and changes in muscle mass measurements. Additionally, the study explored the link between dietary protein and the prevalence of sarcopenia. METHODS Participants aged 40 to 75 were from Guangzhou Nutrition and Health Study (GNHS) 2011-2013 and returned in 2014-2017. Validated 79-item food frequency questionnaires were applied to calculate the amount of total, animal, and plant protein intakes and animal-to-plant protein ratio (APR). The body composition was examined by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) to calculate the appendicular lean mass (ALM) and its index (ASMI). Sarcopenia was diagnosed based on the 2019 Asia Working Group of Sarcopenia's criteria. ANCOVA was utilized to compare the differences of Δ ALM and Δ ASMI across the quartiles of the dietary protein, and linear regression was employed to examine dose-response associations. Multilinear mixed-effect models were employed to evaluate whether protein intake relates to annual changes in ALM and ASMI. Multivariable logistic regressions were performed to analyze the associations between dietary protein and sarcopenia. RESULTS In total, 2709 participants during the 3.2-year follow-up period were considered eligible for analysis. Higher dietary protein intakes (total, animal, plant) in both sexes could preserve more ALM and ASMI in a dose-response manner (all P-trend < 0.05). The annual estimated preservations of ASMI were greater in the highest dietary protein intakes (total, animal, plant) quartile than the lowest (0.05-0.13 kg/m2/y, all P < 0.05). In women, the risk of sarcopenia was reduced by 35%-50 % in the highest protein intake (total, animal, plant) quartile than the lowest. The APR did not display any significant associations. CONCLUSIONS Higher dietary protein intake, regardless of animal or plant sources, is associated with less muscle loss and a lower prevalence of sarcopenia in middle-aged and older Chinese, particularly women. Abstract
OBJECTIVE We conducted this systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize the prevalence of sarcopenia and its impact on mortality in patients undergoing TAVI. METHOD Medline, EMBASE, and PubMed were searched from inception to October 14, 2022 to retrieve eligible studies that assessed sarcopenia in patients undergoing TAVI. Pooled sarcopenia prevalence was calculated with 95% confidence interval (CI), and heterogeneity was estimated using the I2 test. Associations of sarcopenia with mortality of post-TAVI were expressed as hazard ratio (HR) or odds ratios (OR) and 95% CI. RESULTS 13 studies involving 5248 patients (mean age from 78.1 to 84.9 years) undergoing TAVI were included. There were eleven studies defined sarcopenia based on loss of skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), while only two studies used low muscle mass plus low muscle strength and/or low physical performance. Overall, the pooled prevalence of sarcopenia in patients undergoing TAVI was 49% (95% CI 41%-58%). Sarcopenia was associated with an increased risk of long-term (≥1 year) mortality in patients after TAVI (HR 1.57, 95% CI 1.33-1.85, P < 0.001), with similar findings in the subgroups stratified by follow-up time, definition of sarcopenia, study location, and study design. Furthermore, the 1-, 2-, and 3-year cumulative probabilities of survival in patients with sarcopenia were significantly lower than non-sarcopenia (74.0% vs 91.0%, 68.3% vs 78.0%, and 72.6% vs 79.8%, all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Although there are substantial differences in diagnostic criteria, sarcopenia is highly prevalent in patients undergoing TAVI and its linked to increased long-term mortality after TAVI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preoperative sarcopenia is an essential factor that negatively affects postoperative results. The effect of preoperative sarcopenia on postoperative complications and prognosis in patients treated for Fournier's gangrene (FG) is controversial. This retrospective cohort study analyzed the effect of FG to evaluate the effect of preoperative sarcopenia on postoperative complications and prognosis in patients who were operated on. METHOD The data of patients who were operated on with FG diagnosis in our clinic between 2008 and 2020 were reviewed retrospectively. Demographic data (age and gender), anthropometric measurements, preoperative laboratory values, abdominopelvic CT, location of FG, number of debridements, ostomy, microbiological culture result, wound closure method, length of hospital stay, and overall survival were recorded. In addition, the presence of sarcopenia was determined according to psoas muscular index (PMI) and Hounsfield unit average calculation (HUAC). RESULTS Of the patients, 57 (30.8%) were female and 128 (69.2%) were male. According to the PMI, sarcopenia was detected in 67 (36.2%) patients and 70 (37.8%), according to the HUAC. At the end of one postoperative year, the mortality rate was higher in the sarcopenia group than in the non-sarcopenia group (P = .002, P = .01). According to the PMI, patients with sarcopenia have an 8.17 times greater risk of exitus than non-sarcopenic patients. According to the HUAC, patients with sarcopenia have a 4.21 times greater risk of exitus than non-sarcopenic patients. CONCLUSION Based on this large retrospective study, sarcopenia is a strong and independent predictor of postoperative mortality after Fournier's treatment for gangrene.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to present the results of our investigation of the prognostic value of adipopenia and sarcopenia in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). METHODS Consecutive patients with ALS with abdominal computed tomography (CT) were retrospectively identified at a single tertiary hospital between January 2010 and July 2021. Deep learning-based volumetric CT body composition analysis software was used to obtain abdominal waist fat volume, fat attenuation, and skeletal muscle area at the L3 level, then normalized to the fat volume index (FVI) and skeletal muscle index (SMI). Adipopenia and sarcopenia were defined as the sex-specific lowest quartile and SMI reference values, respectively. The associations of CT-derived body composition parameters with clinical variables, such as body mass index (BMI) and creatinine, were evaluated by Pearson correlation analyses, and associations with survival were assessed using the multivariable Cox regression analysis. RESULTS Eighty subjects (40 men, 65.5 ± 9.4 years of age) were investigated (median interval between disease onset and CT examination = 25 months). The mean BMI at the CT examination was 20.3 ± 4.3 kg/m2 . The BMI showed a positive correlation with both FVI (R = 0.70, p < 0.001) and SMI (R = 0.63, p < 0.001), and the serum creatinine level was associated with SMI (R = 0.68, p < 0.001). After adjusting for sex, age, King's stage, BMI, creatinine, progression rate, and sarcopenia, adipopenia was associated with shorter survival (hazard ratio [HR] = 5.94, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.01, 35.0, p = 0.049). In a subgroup analysis for subjects with nutritional failure (stage 4a), the HR of adipopenia was 15.1 (95% CI = 2.45, 93.4, p = 0.003). INTERPRETATION Deep learning-based CT-derived adipopenia in patients with ALS is an independent poor prognostic factor for survival. ANN NEUROL 2023;94:1116-1125.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The impact of frailty and sarcopenia in patients with gastric cancer is unclear. This study aimed to comprehensively examine the impact of frailty and sarcopenia on the short- and long-term outcomes in elderly patients undergoing radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer. METHODS We retrospectively assessed 246 patients aged ≥ 65 years who underwent radical gastrectomy. Frailty and sarcopenia were assessed using the modified frailty index (mFI) and psoas muscle mass index (PMI), respectively. RESULTS There were 30 (12.2%) and 60 (24.4%) patients with High-mFI and Low-PMI, respectively. As the age increased, both sexes showed significant correlations with PMI and mFI (r = - 0.238, 0.322, P = 0.003 and 0.002, respectively). High-mFI and Low-PMI did not affect the short-term outcomes. However, High-mFI was an independent risk factor for non-home discharge (P = 0.004) and was a significant predictor of 3- and 5-year overall survival (OS) (HR = 2.76 and 2.26; P = 0.002 and 0.005, respectively) and 1-, 3- and 5-year non-cancer-specific survival (non-CSS) (HR = 4.88, 8.05, and 4.01; P = 0.017, < 0.001, < 0.001, respectively). Low-PMI was a significant predictor of only 5-year OS (HR = 2.03, P = 0.003) and non-CSS (HR = 2.10, P = 0.020). CONCLUSIONS Frailty is significant predictor of non-home discharge and 1-, 3-, 5-year OS and 3- and 5-year non-CSS. Sarcopenia is a significant predictor of 5-year OS and non-CSS. Preoperative assessment of both frailty and sarcopenia can help surgeons to select adequate treatment strategies for the elderly population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of body muscle and fat metrics on the development of radiologic incisional hernia (IH) following robotic nephrectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients who underwent robotic nephrectomy for kidney tumors between 2011 and 2017. All pre- and postoperative CTs were re-reviewed by experienced radiologists for detection of radiologic IH and calculation of the following metrics using Synapse 3D software: cross-sectional psoas muscle mass at the level of L3 and L4 as well as subcutaneous and visceral fat areas. Sarcopenia was defined as psoas muscle index below the lowest quartile. Cox proportional hazard model was constructed to examine the association between muscle and fat metrics and the risk of developing radiologic IH. RESULTS A total of 236 patients with a median (IQR) age of 64 (54-70) years were included in this study. In a median (IQR) follow-up of 23 (14-38) months, 62 (26%) patients developed radiologic IH. On Cox proportional hazard model, we were unable to detect an association between sarcopenia and risk of IH development. In terms of subcutaneous fat change from pre-op, both lower and higher values were associated with IH development (HR (95% CI) 2.1 (1.2-3.4), p = 0.01 and 2.4 (1.4-4.1), p < 0.01 for < Q1 and ≥ Q3, respectively). Similar trend was found for visceral fat area changes from pre-op with a HR of 2.8 for < Q1 and 1.8 for ≥ Q3. CONCLUSION Both excessive body fat gain and loss are associated with development of radiologic IH in patients undergoing robotic nephrectomy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anorexia of aging is a common geriatric syndrome that includes loss of appetite and/or reduced food intake, with associated undernutrition, unintended weight loss, sarcopenia, functional decline, loss of independence and other adverse health outcomes. Anorexia of aging can have multiple and severe consequences and is often overlooked by healthcare professionals (HCPs). Even more concerningly, clinicians commonly accept anorexia of aging as an inevitable part of 'normal' aging. The aim of this assessment was to identify current gaps in professional knowledge and practice in identifying and managing older persons with anorexia. Results may guide educational programmes to fill the gaps identified and therefore improve patient outcomes. METHODS This international assessment was conducted using a mixed-methods approach, including focus group interviews with subject matter experts and an electronic survey of practicing HCPs. The assessment was led by the Society on Sarcopenia, Cachexia and Wasting Disorders (SCWD) and was supported by in-country collaborating organizations. RESULTS A quantitative survey of 26 multiple-choice questions was completed by physicians, dietitians and other HCPs (n = 1545). Most HCPs (56.8%) recognize a consistent definition of anorexia of aging as a loss of appetite and/or low food intake. Cognitive changes/dementia (91%) and dysphagia (87%) are seen as the biggest risk factors. Most respondents were confident to give nutritional (62%) and physical activity (59.4%) recommendations and engaged caregivers such as family members in supporting older adults with anorexia (80.6%). Most clinicians assessed appetite at each visit (66.7%), although weight is not measured at every visit (41.5%). Apart from the Mini-Nutritional Assessment Short Form (39%), other tools to screen for appetite loss are not frequently used or no tools are used at all (29.4%). A high number of respondents (38.7%) believe that anorexia is a normal part of aging. Results show that treatment is focused on swallowing disorders (78%), dentition issues (76%) and increasing oral intake (fortified foods [75%] and oral nutritional supplements [74%]). Nevertheless, the lack of high-quality evidence is perceived as a barrier to optimal treatment (49.2%). CONCLUSIONS Findings from this international assessment highlight the challenges in the care of older adults with or at risk for anorexia of aging. Identifying professional practice gaps between individual HCPs and team-based gaps can provide a basis for healthcare education that is addressed at root causes, targeted to specific audiences and developed to improve individual and team practices that contribute to improving patient outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Hospital-associated sarcopenia is prevalent and associated with poor outcomes in acutely admitted patients. Prevention of developing sarcopenia during hospitalization is an important factor in stroke management. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate whether energy intake and rehabilitation duration contribute to the prevention of hospital-associated sarcopenia in patients with acute stroke. METHODS Patients with acute stroke were included in this study. Energy intake during the first week of hospitalization was classified as "high" or "low" based on the reported cutoff value. Rehabilitation time during hospitalization was classified as "intense" or "mild" based on the median. The four groups were compared based on the combinations of high or low energy intake and intense or mild rehabilitation. The primary outcome was the development of sarcopenia during hospitalization. The secondary outcome was the Functional Independence Measure motor item gain during hospitalization. Multivariate analysis was performed with the primary or secondary outcome as the dependent variable and the effect of each group on the outcome was examined. RESULTS A total of 112 participants (mean age = 70.6 y; 63 men) were included in the study. Multivariate analysis found that high × intense (odds ratio = 0.113; P = 0.041) was independently associated with the development of sarcopenia during hospitalization (i.e., hospital-related sarcopenia). High × intense (β = 0.395; P < 0.001) was independently associated with the gain of Functional Independence Measure motor items. CONCLUSIONS In patients with acute stroke, the combination of high energy intake and adequate rehabilitation time is associated with prevention of hospital-associated sarcopenia.

Abstract
GOAL We performed a systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis to determine how radiographic sarcopenia assessment methods and the presence of pre-treatment sarcopenia impact oncologic outcomes in patients with oral cavity cancer. INTRODUCTION Pre-treatment sarcopenia has been associated with poor outcomes in many different malignancies, including head and neck cancers. However, the impact sarcopenia has on outcomes for oral cavity cancer patients is not well understood. RESULTS Twelve studies met our inclusion criteria, totaling 1007 patients. 359 (36%) of these patients were reported as sarcopenic. The most commonly utilized sarcopenia assessment methods were L3 skeletal muscle index (n = 5) and C3 skeletal muscle index to estimate L3 skeletal muscle index (n = 5). The majority of studies established their sarcopenia cutoffs as the lowest quartile skeletal muscle index in their patient cohorts. Five studies were included in our meta-analysis, totaling 251 sarcopenic and 537 non-sarcopenic patients. Compared to non-sarcopenic patients, sarcopenic patients were found to have significantly poorer overall survival (univariate: HR = 2.24, 95% CI: 1.71-2.93, I2 = 0%; multivariate: HR = 1.93, 95% CI: 1.47-2.52, I2 = 0%) and disease-free survival (univariate: HR = 2.10, 95% CI: 1.50-2.92, I2 = 0%; multivariate: HR = 1.79, 95% CI: 1.29-2.47, I2 = 10%). CONCLUSIONS Over one-third of oral cavity cancer patients may present with sarcopenia. Pre-treatment sarcopenia is associated with significantly worse overall and disease-free survival.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the association of sarcopenia and type 2 diabetes (T2D) with blood parameters, nutrient intake, and physical activity in older Korean adults. We divided 2952 participants into four groups: sarcopenic diabetes (SD), sarcopenia alone (S), diabetes alone (D), and non-sarcopenia and non-diabetes (NSND). Sarcopenia was defined by the appendicular skeletal muscle mass index, and T2D by fasting glucose levels or ongoing treatment. Blood samples were collected after an 8-h fast. Nutrient intake was assessed using a 24-h recall; physical activity was evaluated using a questionnaire. Compared with those in the other groups, the men in the S and SD groups showed significantly lower hemoglobin and hematocrit levels; vitamin D levels in men and parathyroid hormone levels in women were significantly lower in the SD group. Total energy, protein, and carbohydrate intakes were significantly lower in the SD and S groups than those in the D and NSND groups. Physical inactivity was significantly more common in the SD group (men: odds ratio, 1.61; women: odds ratio, 2.37) than in the NSND group. A combination of sarcopenia and diabetes as well as sarcopenia alone was associated with low levels of blood parameters, poor nutrient intake, and low physical activity.

Abstract
Sarcopenic obesity (SO) is diagnosed when sarcopenia and obesity coexist in patients. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of SO under different diagnostic criteria in community-dwelling Spanish adults aged over 65 years residing in Valencia (Spain). The research was conducted as an observational and cross-sectional study with a sample size of 202 subjects. To diagnose sarcopenia, we used the tests proposed by the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People in 2019 (EWGSOP2): SARC-F, grip strength, sit-to-stand, gait speed, Appendicular Skeletal Muscle Mass (ASMM), and Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). For obesity diagnosis, we used body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), total body fat percentage (%TBF), and tricipital skinfold (TS). The prevalence of SO was 16.5% in women and 29% in men, according to any of the diagnostic criteria used to determine obesity. A higher proportion of SO was observed as age increased in both groups, although no significant differences were found. Most values obtained in tests related to SO diagnosis were worse in the group affected by the disease; however, there were two exceptions related to the amount of ASMM. In total, 18.8% of the participants presented SO according to any diagnostic criteria related to obesity. Our results suggest significant differences in the number of SO cases depending on diagnostic criteria used to determine the participants' obesity. BMI, WC, and TBF% were shown as principal variables to be included in obesity diagnosis within the SO construct. These findings underscore the need to unify criteria to standardize the diagnosis of SO in the global population.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is a crucial factor in assessing the nutritional status of chronic liver disease patients and predicting their prognosis and survival. The serum ammonia level is closely associated with sarcopenia regarding ammonia, a key regulator in the liver-muscle axis. In addition, various changes in energy metabolism and hormones are also involved in sarcopenia. The psoas muscle area can represent the overall skeletal muscle mass in liver disease patients. Therefore, measuring the psoas muscle area with computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging is considered an objective and reliable method for assessing muscle mass. Providing sufficient calorie and protein intake is crucial for preventing and treating sarcopenia. In addition, engaging in appropriate exercise and addressing concurrent hormonal and metabolic changes can be helpful.

Abstract
Background Recent studies have presented the concept of the obesity paradox, suggesting that individuals with obesity have a lower risk of death than those without obesity. This paradox may arise because body mass index (BMI) alone is insufficient to understand body composition accurately. This study investigated the relationship between fat and muscle mass and the risk of mortality in individuals with overweight/obesity. Methods We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2006 and 2011 to 2018, which were linked to mortality information obtained from the National Death Index. Multiple Cox regression analyses were performed to estimate mortality risk. Subgroup analysis was conducted using propensity score-matched (PSM) data for age, sex, and race/ethnicity. Results This study included 16,555 participants who were overweight/obese (BMI≥25 kg/m2). An increase in appendicular skeletal muscle mass index was associated with a lower mortality risk (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.856; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.802-0.915). This finding was consistent with the subgroup analysis of the PSM data. Contrastingly, a high fat mass index was associated with an increased risk of mortality. Sarcopenic overweight/obesity was significantly associated with high mortality compared to obesity without sarcopenia (HR: 1.612, 95%CI: 1.328-1.957). This elevated risk was significant in both age- and sex-based subgroups. This finding was consistent with the subgroup analysis using PSM data. Conclusion In contrast to the obesity paradox, a simple increase in BMI does not protect against mortality. Instead, low body fat and high muscle mass reduce mortality risk.

Abstract
Based on the association between sarcopenia and the risk of developing cardio-cerebrovascular disease (CCVD) established by a meta-analysis by Fang et al.(Biosci Trends. 2023; 17:293-301), we have used Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to test the authenticity and accuracy of such an association. In this MR study, appendicular lean mass, handgrip strength, and walking pace were used as sarcopenia-related traits, with cardiovascular diseases and stroke set as outcomes of CCVD. MR analysis was performed using inverse-variance weighting, the MR Egger, weighted median, simple mode, and weighted mode. No heterogeneity or horizontal pleiotropy in MR estimates was observed (Cochran's Q P value > 0.05, MR-PRESSO global test P value > 0.05, and MR-Egger intercept P value > 0.05). Results of that analysis proved a causal relationship between sarcopenia-related traits and cardio-cerebrovascular disease, with a causal association between appendicular lean mass and cardiovascular diseases and an inverse causal relationship between appendicular lean mass and stroke. However, such a relationship was absent in the case of handgrip strength and the risk of cardiovascular diseases as well as in the case of walking pace and lacunar/ischemic stroke. Therefore, the effect of sarcopenia on CCVD should be carefully explained.

Abstract
Osteosarcopenic obesity is a new syndrome that has been recently discussed in the scientific community. It is a condition that affects the elderly and involves the loss of bone, muscle, and fat tissue. The few studies that have been done on this disease showed that it has a high prevalence among the elderly and can cause various complications. This study was the first one to investigate this syndrome in Iran, and found that its prevalence was 19.83%. BACKGROUND Osteosarcopenic obesity syndrome (OSO) is a condition that involves osteopenia/osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and obesity. It leads to a reduction in the quality of life of the elderly and an increase in hospitalization which has attracted the attention of physicians. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of osteosarcopenic obesity in people over 60 years of age in Bushehr. MATERIALS AND METHODS We used data from the Bushehr study, which included 2426 participants aged ≥ 60 years. We assessed osteoporosis/osteopenia based on T-score; sarcopenia based on hand grip strength, skeletal muscle mass index (SMI), and walking speed; and obesity based on fat mass and BMI for diagnosing OSO. We first examined the factors related to OSO in the univariable analysis and then fitted the multiple logistic regression model, separately for women and men. The result was summarized as adjusted odds ratios with a 95% confidence interval. RESULTS In total, 2339 elderly were examined in our study, of which 464 elderly were suffering from osteosarcopenic obesity. The standardized prevalence of OSO was 23.66% (95% CI: 21.15-26.16) in women and 18.53% (95% CI 16.35-20.87) in men. Age was positively linked to osteosarcopenic obesity in both genders and so was diabetes in men. However, education, physical activity, and protein intake were negatively linked to osteosarcopenic obesity in both genders, as well as hypertriglyceridemia and hypertension in women. CONCLUSION The prevalence of OSO among men and women of Bushehr city is high and is related to increasing age, low levels of education, physical activity, and protein intake among women and men.

Abstract
Background The quadriceps muscle is one of the human body's largest and most clinically important muscles and is evaluated using mid-thigh computed tomography (CT); however, its relationship with motor function and sarcopenia remains unclear. Herein, we investigated the relationship between the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the quadriceps muscle, CT attenuation value (CTV), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry muscle mass measurements, and muscle strength and motor function to evaluate the relationship between muscle mass loss and motor function decline, determine the diagnostic ability for sarcopenia, and confirm the usefulness of quadriceps muscle CT evaluation. Methods A total of 472 middle-aged and older community dwellers (254 men and 218 women) aged ≥40 years (mean age: 62.3 years) were included in this study. The quantity and quality of the quadriceps muscle were assessed using CSA and CTV (CSA×CTV) as a composite index multiplied by quality and quantity. Age-adjusted partial correlations by sex with eight motor functions (knee extension muscle strength, power, normal walking speed, fast walking speed, grip strength, sit-up ability, balance ability, and reaction time) were evaluated, including correction methods for height, weight, and body mass index (BMI). Further, the accuracy of sarcopenia diagnosis was evaluated using appendicular muscle mass with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry measurements, grip strength, and walking speed as the gold standard, and receiver operating characteristic curves were plotted to evaluate diagnostic performance. Results In men, CSA and CSA×CTV were significantly associated with seven of the eight motor functions (p<0.05), excluding only balance ability. BMI-corrected CSA was significantly correlated with all eight motor functions in men and women (p<0.05). In the diagnosis of sarcopenia based on skeletal muscle index, CSA (area under the curve (AUC) 0.935) and CSA×CTV (AUC 0.936) and their correction by height (CSA/height (AUC 0.917) and CSA×CTV/height (AUC 0.920)) were highly accurate and useful for diagnosis in men but moderately accurate in women (CSA (AUC 0.809), CSA×CTV (AUC 0.824), CSA/height (AUC 0.799), CSA×CTV/height (AUC 0.814)). Conclusion The present results showed that a single CT image of the quadriceps muscle at the mid-thigh is useful for diagnosing sarcopenic changes, such as loss of muscle mass, muscle weakness, and muscle function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Femoral fragility fractures in older adults can result in devastating loss of physical function and independence. Skeletal muscle atrophy likely contributes to disability. The purpose of this study was to characterize the change in skeletal muscle mass, investigate the relationship with malnutrition and physical function, and identify risk factors for skeletal muscle loss. METHODS Adults ≥65 years of age who were treated with operative fixation of an isolated femoral fragility fracture were enrolled in this multicenter, prospective observational study. Skeletal muscle mass was assessed within 72 hours of admission using multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis, which was repeated at 6 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months. Sarcopenia was defined by sex-specific cutoffs for the appendicular skeletal muscle mass index. The Mini Nutritional Assessment was used to measure nutritional status at the time of injury. Physical function was measured using the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Physical Function domain. Linear mixed models were used to evaluate changes in skeletal muscle mass and PROMIS Physical Function scores over time and to evaluate factors associated with skeletal muscle mass changes. RESULTS Ninety participants (74% female) with a mean age of 77.6 ± 9.0 years were enrolled. At the time of injury, 30 (33%) were sarcopenic and 44 (49%) were at risk for malnutrition or had malnutrition. Older age was associated with lower skeletal muscle mass (age of ≥75 versus <75 years: least squares mean [and standard error], -3.3 ± 1.6 kg; p = 0.042). From the time of injury to 6 weeks, participants lost an average of 2.4 kg (9%) of skeletal muscle mass (95% confidence interval [CI] = ‒3.0 to ‒1.8 kg; p < 0.001). This early loss did not recover by 6 months (1.8 kg persistent loss compared with baseline [95% CI = ‒2.5 to ‒1.1 kg]; p < 0.001). Participants with normal nutritional status lost more skeletal muscle mass from baseline to 6 weeks after injury compared with those with malnutrition (1.3 kg more loss [standard error, 0.6 kg]; p = 0.036). A 1-kg decrease in skeletal muscle mass was associated with an 8-point decrease in the PROMIS Physical Function (model parameter estimate, 0.12 [standard error, 0.04]; p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS We found that older adults with femoral fragility fractures lost substantial skeletal muscle mass and physical function. Participants with adequate baseline nutrition actually lost more muscle mass than those who were malnourished, indicating that future investigations of interventions to prevent muscle loss should focus on older adults regardless of nutritional status. Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of sarcopenia on prognosis in patients with gastric cancer in order to explore the relationship between sarcopenia and postoperative complications as well as durations of hospital stay and intensive care unit. METHODS A total of 175 patients who visited the oncology clinic between 2017 and 2022 with respect to their radiological images, demographic data, and laboratory parameters were perused. The OsiriX software was used to measure the skeletal muscle area that was divided by the body height in order to obtain the skeletal muscle index. RESULTS A total of 50.28% of 175 patients (41 females and 134 males, with a mean age of 63.5 years) who met the inclusion criteria in the study were sarcopenic. Significant differences appeared between sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic patients with respect to durations of both hospital stay (p<0.01) and intensive care unit stay (p<0.01) (multivariate analysis). Furthermore, patients with sarcopenia had significantly frequent postoperative complications in comparison with those without sarcopenia. Among the patients with sarcopenia, decreased levels of hemoglobin and albumin as well as lymphocytes were encountered in terms of inflammatory markers; nevertheless, no significant differences were determined among other inflammatory markers. CONCLUSION In patients undergoing treatment for gastric cancer, sarcopenia increases postoperative complications and prolongs hospital and intensive care stays during the treatment process.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study investigated the role of sarcopenia in the long-term outcomes of patients with early-stage intrahepatic recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS The study included 136 patients with intrahepatic recurrent Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) stage 0/A HCC following liver resection diagnosed between 2006 and 2020 and underwent surgery, radiofrequency ablation (RFA), or transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE). Sarcopenia was defined based on the skeletal muscle index using computed tomography at the time of recurrence, and its association with long-term outcomes was evaluated. Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (CD4 + , CD8 + , and CD45RO + T cells) were assayed using immunohistochemistry on specimens obtained from repeat hepatectomies, and their association with sarcopenia was evaluated. RESULTS The overall survival (OS) and recurrence-free survival (RFS) rates after initial recurrence of patients with sarcopenia were significantly lower than those without sarcopenia (p < 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively). Multivariate analysis identified sarcopenia as an independent prognostic factor for RFS (p < 0.001). In patients without sarcopenia, surgery resulted in better RFS than RFA or TACE. Contrastingly, in patients with sarcopenia, the RFS was extremely poor regardless of the treatment type: surgery, RFA, or TACE (median RFS, 11.7, 12.7, and 10.1 months). Significantly low levels of tumor-infiltrating CD4 + , CD8 + , and CD45RO + lymphocytes were observed in patients with sarcopenia (p = 0.001, p = 0.001, and p = 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that patients with sarcopenia have poor RFS regardless of the treatment type for early-stage intrahepatic recurrent HCC. Impaired host immunity might be one of the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Osteoporosis and sarcopenia, respectively, have detrimental impact on health, and combination of both conditions, termed osteosarcopenia, is becoming an increasingly important disorder in older adults as populations age. This study aimed to explore the relationship between osteoporosis and possible sarcopenia and their joint effect on physical performance, nutritional status, and cognition in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS This study was conducted at a medical center in Taiwan, which included the adjacent community care station. The participants were recruited through regular activities at the community care station between January 01, 2015 and February 28, 2022. During the study period, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and comprehensive geriatric assessment consisting of comorbidity burden, functional status, cognition, mood, and nutritional status were performed during the study period. Possible sarcopenia was identified utilizing the criteria set by the Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia in 2019 using the criteria of low muscle strength alone, and osteoporosis was defined by the World Health Organization criteria. Accordingly, the study subjects were divided into four groups: normal, only osteoporosis, only possible sarcopenia, and possible osteosarcopenia. RESULTS There were 337 participants (68.6% female) with a median age of 78.0 years (interquartile range: 71.0-85.0 y/o). According to the clinical definition of osteosarcopenia, 78 participants were normal, 69 participants showed possible sarcopenia, 61 participants had osteoporosis, and 129 had osteoporosis with possible sarcopenia. Among the four groups, the prevalence rates of chronic illness, functional capacity, physical performance, cognitive impairment, and malnutrition revealed statistically significant differences. Using logistic regression analysis after adjusting for the other covariates, osteoporosis with possible sarcopenia was associated with an increased odds ratio of cognitive impairment. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest that compared to osteoporosis or possible sarcopenia alone, osteoporosis with possible sarcopenia was more likely to be associated with cognitive impairment. Early identification and targeted interventions for cognitive impairment in older adults with osteosarcopenia may be valuable in maintaining cognitive well-being and overall quality of life.
