Abstract
BACKGROUND The triglyceride and glucose (TyG) index, a simple surrogate marker of insulin resistance, is related to cardiovascular disease. However, there is a lack of evidence for the relationship between the TyG index and chest pain. This study aimed to investigate the association of the TyG index with chest pain and to evaluate the relationship between the TyG index and all-cause mortality in participants with or without chest pain. METHODS The present study utilized data from the 2001-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), employing a combination of cross-sectional and cohort study designs. The association between the TyG index and chest pain was investigated using weighted logistic regression models. Weighted Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for all-cause mortality. Restricted cubic spline analysis was used to explore linear or nonlinear relationships between the TyG index and chest pain or all-cause mortality. RESULTS The findings revealed a positive correlation between the TyG index and chest pain, even after adjusting for potential confounding factors (quartile 4 versus quartile 1, odds ratio [OR] 1.42, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.14-1.77, P = 0.002). During a mean follow-up time of 139 months, a total of 2286 individuals (27.43%) experienced mortality. Weighted multivariate Cox regression models indicated that for each one-unit increase in the TyG index, the adjusted hazard ratio (HR) for mortality was 1.14 (95% CI = 0.94-1.37) for participants with chest pain and 1.25 (95% CI = 1.09-1.43) for those without chest pain. Furthermore, restricted cubic spline analysis revealed a linear relationship between the TyG index and chest pain (P for nonlinearity = 0.902), whereas a nonlinear relationship was shown between the TyG index and all-cause mortality among populations regardless of chest pain (all P for nonlinearity < 0.01). CONCLUSION The TyG index was positively linked to a higher incidence of chest pain. Moreover, the TyG index was associated with all-cause mortality not only in participants with chest pain but also in those without chest pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While several studies have investigated the association between vitamin D deficiency and biochemical parameters, the results are still inconsistent and mostly overlook seasonal variations. This study explored the relationships between 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations, biochemical markers, and seasonal variation among young males and females. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among 203 individuals aged 18-24 years of both sexes residing in Brasilia, Brazil (latitude: 15°S). Sociodemographic variables, season of blood collection, and serum levels of 25(OH)D, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), glucose, insulin, hs-CRP, parathyroid hormone, ionized calcium, and alkaline phosphatase were included. Descriptive statistics and differences among groups, correlations, and linear regression tests were performed. RESULTS The mean age of the participants was 21.17±1.7 years, and the mean serum 25(OH)D level was 25.76±7.0 ng/mL. Of the participants, 50.7% had vitamin D insufficiency (20 to 29.9 ng/mL), and 23.2% were vitamin D deficient (≤20 ng/mL). Vitamin D deficiency was higher in the spring (53.2%) and among females (29.5%). In young men with vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency (≤29.9 ng/mL) (n = 49), 25(OH)D levels were inversely correlated with HOMA-β (r = -0.234, p = 0.032) and triglyceride (r = -0.415, p = 0.003) levels. However, there were no significant correlations between 25(OH)D concentrations and biochemical markers among women with insufficient and deficient vitamin D levels. CONCLUSION This study found a high prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency among young individuals living in Brasília, Brazil, particularly women and during the spring season. Our findings suggest that lower 25(OH)D levels (≤29.9 ng/mL) may be associated with insulin resistance and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease in young men studied. However, further studies with larger representative samples are needed to explore the mechanisms underlying the association between vitamin D and biochemical parameters.

Abstract
High serum ferritin (SF) levels have been linked to obesity, metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cancer. This study aimed to investigate the association between SF and dyslipidemia in adults diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. This cross-sectional study retrospectively analyzed the electronic medical records of eligible patients from 3 primary locations in Saudi Arabia namely - Abha, Khamis Mushyt, and Jeddah - from 2010 to 2020. The study included adult patients aged 18 years or older who were diagnosed with diabetes mellitus and identified with an HbA1c level of ≥6.5. This study involved 3674 participants, with males accounting for 26.6% of the total. The mean age of the studied population was 48.0 ± 18.4 years. The median [interquartile range] of SF among males was higher than females, however, this difference was not statistically significant (60.0 [23.4-125.8] vs 55.4 [24.0-113.4], P = 0.204). On the other hand, age and region were significantly associated with SF (P = .032 and 0.035). SF had a significant positive correlation with cholesterol (r = 0.081, P < .001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (r = .087, P < .001), and triglycerides (r = 0.068, P < .001) and negative correlation with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (r = -0.13, P < .001). Multivariate analysis revealed that age, sex, residence, and HbA1c were significantly affecting the lipid profile. Clinicians should consider including SF testing as part of the comprehensive evaluation of patients with diabetes and dyslipidemia.

Abstract
Background and Aim An elevated triglyceride-glucose (TyG) level is associated with increased risk of mortality in patients with CAD. Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) has mechanistic links to atherosclerotic coronary artery disease (CAD) pathogenesis and is correlated with adverse outcomes. However, the incremental prognostic value of TMAO and TyG in the cohort of optical coherence tomography (OCT)-defined high-risk ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients is unknown. Methods We studied 274 consecutive aged ≥18 years patients with evidence of STEMI and detected on pre-intervention OCT imaging of culprit lesions between March 2017 and March 2019. Outcomes There were 22 (22.68%), 27 (27.84%), 26 (26.80%), and 22 (22.68%) patients in groups A-D, respectively. The baseline characteristics according to the level of TMAO and TyG showed that patients with higher level in both indicators were more likely to have higher triglycerides (p < 0.001), fasting glucose (p < 0.001) and higher incidence of diabetes (p = 0.008). The group with TMAO > median and TyG ≤ median was associated with higher rates of MACEs significantly (p = 0.009) in fully adjusted analyses. During a median follow-up of 2.027 years, 20 (20.6%) patients experienced MACEs. To evaluate the diagnostic value of the TyG index combined with TMAO, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for predicting MACEs after full adjustment was 0.815 (95% confidence interval, 0.723-0.887; sensitivity, 85.00%; specificity, 72.73%; cut-off level, 0.577). Among the group of patients with TMAO > median and TyG ≤ median, there was a significantly higher incidence of MACEs (p=0.033). A similar tendency was found in the cohort with hyperlipidemia (p=0.016) and diabetes mellitus (p=0.036). Conclusion This study demonstrated the usefulness of combined measures of the TyG index and TMAO in enhancing risk stratification in STEMI patients with OCT-defined high-risk plaque characteristics. Abstract
Background Diabetes mellitus is often accompanied by dyslipidemia. Sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, as a novel therapeutic agent for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), have been reported to exert effects on lipid, while the results remain controversial. This study is aimed at exploring the effect of SGLT2 inhibitor canagliflozin on lipid profile. Methods This study was a single-center, open-label, nonrandomized, prospective study. Metformin (500 mg three times per day) or canagliflozin (100 mg, once daily) was administered for 12 weeks. Fasting blood samples were collected before and 12 weeks after treatment. Serum lipid profile levels and angiopoietin-like protein 3 (ANGPTL3) were determined. In animal experiment, C57BL/6 J mice were divided into three groups including control, STZ + HFD, and STZ + HFD + canagliflozin. Lipid profile and plasma ANGPTL3 level were measured after 12 week's treatment. Moreover, the expression of ANGPTL3 was detected in the liver tissues. Results There was a decreased trend in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) and triglycerides (TG) after canagliflozin treatment, while canagliflozin significantly increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) level and decreased plasma ANGPTL3 level. In addition, the expression of ANGPTL3 in liver tissues decreased obviously in diabetic mice with canagliflozin treatment. Conclusions Canagliflozin increases HDL-c level and suppresses ANGPTL3 expression in patients with T2DM and diabetic mice. The reduction of ANGPTL3 may contribute to the increase of HDL-c. However, the specific mechanism needs further research. This trial is registered with ChiCTR1900021231.

Abstract
Mounting evidence suggests that meal timing and frequency are associated with cardiometabolic health by influencing circadian rhythms. However, the evidence is inconsistent and limited, especially in non-Western cultures. This cross-sectional study aims to investigate the association between temporal habits of dietary intake, such as nightly fasting duration and meal frequency, and metabolic syndrome among Kuwaiti adults. A 24-hour recall was used to assess temporal habits of dietary intake. Meal frequency was defined as the number of daily eating episodes. The study included a total of 757 adults aged 20 years and older. The participants' mean age was 37.8 ± 12.3 years. After adjusting for all confounders, higher meal frequency was found to be associated with a lower prevalence of metabolic syndrome in adults (OR, 0.43; 95%CI, 0.19-0.96) and a lower prevalence of elevated triglycerides in men only (OR, 0.23; 95%CI, 0.09-0.60). No association was found between nightly fasting and metabolic syndrome, but a longer fasting duration was associated with a lower prevalence of elevated triglycerides (OR, 0.19; 95%CI, 0.06-0.63). The findings suggest that having frequent meals and longer durations of nightly fasting may help decrease the risk of metabolic syndrome and elevated triglycerides.

Abstract
Sn-2 palmitate is widely used in infant formula. However, little is known about its effects on metabolism and body composition in middle-aged and elderly adults. In a double-blinded, randomized controlled trial, we enrolled Chinese adults aged 45-75 years with self-reported constipation. Individuals were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to a 1,3-dioleoyl-2-palmitoyl-glycerol (OPO)-enriched oil (66% palmitic acid in the sn-2 position) or a control vegetable oil (24% palmitic acid in the sn-2 position) daily for 24 weeks. Skim milk powder was used as the carrier for both fats. Interviews and body composition were performed at baseline, week 4, week 12 and week 24. A fasting blood draw was taken except at week 4. This study was a secondary analysis and considered exploratory. A total of 111 adults (83 women and 28 men, mean age 64.2 ± 7.0 years) were enrolled, of whom 53 were assigned to the OPO group and 57 to the control group. During the intervention, blood glucose, triglyceride, the triglyceride-glucose index, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and remnant cholesterol remained stable, while high-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased in both groups (p = 0.003). No differences in change were observed between the groups (all p > 0.05). From baseline to week 24, the level of visceral fat increased slightly (p = 0.017), while body weight, total body water, protein, soft lean mass, fat-free mass, skeletal muscle and skeletal muscle mass index (SMI) decreased in two groups (p < 0.01). At weeks 4, 12 and 24, the SMI decreased less in the OPO group than in the control group, with a trend towards significance (p = 0.090). Abstract
INTRODUCTION A better understanding of the determinants of placental growth is needed. Our primary aim was to explore associations between maternal ethnic origin and cardio-metabolic factors during pregnancy, and placental weight, surface area, shape and thickness. METHODS A multi-ethnic population-based cohort study of 474 pregnant women examined at mean 15 and 28 weeks' gestation. Placentas were inspected after birth by a placental pathologist. Outcome measures were trimmed placental weight and three uncorrelated placental components; surface area, shape (oval vs round) and thickness, created through a principal components analysis. Multivariate linear regression models were used to explore the associations with maternal factors. RESULTS Compared with ethnic European women, mothers with South- and East Asian ethnicity had placentas with lower weight (-51 g (95% CI: 75, -27) and -55 g (-95, -14) respectively), primarily due to a smaller surface area. The association between South Asian ethnicity and placental surface area was still significant after adjusting for maternal characteristics and cardio-metabolic factors. Fat mass index in early pregnancy was associated with higher placental weight and thickness. Placental surface area was positively associated with mid-gestational increases in fat mass, fasting glucose and triglycerides and with the 2-h glucose value at the 28 week oral glucose tolerance test, and inversely with a mid-gestational increase in HDL-cholesterol. DISCUSSION Mid-gestational changes in fat mass, glucose, triglycerides and cholesterol were associated with, but only partly explained ethnic differences in placental surface area, while maternal fat mass in early pregnancy was associated with placental thickness.

Abstract
Background The triglyceride glucose (TyG) index is an effective method for determining insulin resistance (IR). Limited research has explored the connection between the TyG index and functionally significant stenosis in hypertensive patients. Furthermore, the connections between the TyG index, fat attenuation index (FAI) and atherosclerotic plaque characteristics are also worth exploring. Methods The study screened 1622 hypertensive participants without coronary artery disease history who underwent coronary computed tomography angiography. The TyG index was calculated as ln (fasting glucose [mg/dL] * fasting TG [mg/dL]/2). Adverse plaque characteristics (HRPCs), high-risk plaques (HRPs), FAI, and CT-derived fractional flow reserve (FFRCT) were analyzed and measured for all patients. Functionally significant stenosis causing ischemia is defined as FFRCT ≤ 0.80. Two patient groups were created based on the FFRCT: the FFRCT < 0.80 group and the FFRCT > 0.80 group. In hypertensive patients, the association between the TyG index and FFRCT was examined applying a logistic regression model. Results The TyG index was higher for people with FFRCT ≤ 0.80 contrast to those with FFRCT > 0.80. After controlling for additional confounding factors, the logistic regression model revealed a clear connection between the TyG index and FFRCT ≤ 0.80 (OR = 1.718, 95% CI 1.097-2.690, p = 0.018). The restricted cubic spline analysis displayed a nonlinear connection between the TyG index and FFRCT ≤ 0.80 (p for nonlinear = 0.001). The TyG index increased the fraction of individuals with HRPs and HRPCs, FAI raised, and FFRCT decreased (p < 0.05). The multivariate linear regression analysis illustrated a powerfulcorrelation between high TyG index levels and FAI, FFRCT, positive remodeling (PR), and low-attenuation plaque (LAPs) (standardized regression coefficients: 0.029 [p = 0.007], -0.051 [p < 0.001], 0.029 [p = 0.027], and 0.026 [p = 0.046], separately). Conclusion In hypertensive patients, the TyG index showed an excellent association with a risk of FFRCT ≤ 0.80. Additionally, the TyG index was also linked to FAI, FFRCT, PR, and LAPs.

Abstract
This study was focused on one particular case of hot-melt coating with trilaurin - a solid medium-chain monoacid triglyceride. The challenge of using trilaurin as coating agent in melting-based processes is linked to its relatively low melting profile: 15.6 °C (Tm,α), 35.1 °C ( [Formula: see text] ) and 45.7 °C (Tm,β). From a process perspective, the only possibility to generate products coated with formulations composed of trilaurin is by setting thermal operational conditions above Tm,α. From a material perspective, this processing possibility depends principally on trilaurin crystallisation which was investigated via a set of analytical techniques including turbidimetry, calorimetry, hot-melt goniometry, and polarised light microscopy. A highly soluble drug model substrate (sodium chloride crystals) was coated with three selected trilaurin-based formulations: (i) trilaurin, (ii) trilaurin plus talc, and (iii) trilaurin plus vitamin E TPGS and talc. Coated salt crystals were then analysed to investigate processing performance, coating quality, stability and release properties under digestion effect. The results show that firstly, talc addition promotes nucleation and crystal growth and, as a consequence, it facilitates the manufacture of trilaurin-based formulations. Secondly, the formulation of a solid triglyceride and a hydrophilic surfactant could potentially cause release instability, but formula (iii) was found to be stabilised by a mechanism whereby trilaurin crystallization enhanced in the presence of talc immobilised vitamin E TPGS in its crystal lattice. Thirdly, talc addition did not significantly influence trilaurin digestion which endows products with an immediate release in lipolytic conditions instead of an extended liberation in pure water. Nor did the addition of one or two additives alter the extent of trilaurin digestion under the conditions studied. These important findings relate to product manufacturability, stability, and release properties. A good understanding of material properties (e.g. crystallisation, polymorphism, digestibility) is essential for melt-processing, lipid coating stabilising and modulation of release profile of solid lipid-coated product, as demonstrated in this case study with trilaurin.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the association between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index in early pregnancy and the development of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in the second trimester. The primary objectives were to evaluate the predictive potential of the TyG index for GDM, determine the optimal threshold value of the TyG index for GDM assessment, and compare the predictive performance of the TyG index alone versus its combination with maternal age and pre-pregnancy body mass index on GDM. Moreover, the study explored the association between the TyG index in early pregnancy and the risk of other pregnancy-related complications (PRCs), such as placental abruption and gestational hypertension. PATIENTS AND METHODS This prospective cohort study recruited 1,624 pregnant women who underwent early pregnancy antenatal counseling and comprehensive assessments with continuous monitoring until delivery. To calculate the TyG index, health indicators, including maternal triglycerides and fasting plasma glucose, were measured in early pregnancy (< 14 weeks of gestation). The predictive power of the TyG index for evaluating GDM in Chinese pregnant women was determined using multifactorial logistic regression to derive the odds ratios and 95% confidence interval (CI). Subgroup analyses were conducted, and the efficacy of the TyG index in predicting PRCs was assessed via receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and restricted cubic spline, with the optimal cutoff value calculated. RESULTS Logistic regression analyses revealed a 2.10-fold increase in the GDM risk for every 1-unit increase in the TyG index, after adjusting for covariates. The highest GDM risk was observed in the group with the highest TyG index compared with the lowest quintile group (odds ratios: 3.25; 95% CI: 2.23-4.75). Subgroup analyses indicated that exceeding the recommended range of gestational weight gain and an increased GDM risk were significantly associated (P = 0.001). Regarding predictive performance, the TyG index exhibited the highest area under the curve (AUC) value in the ROC curve for GDM (AUC: 0.641, 95% CI: 0.61-0.671). The optimal cutoff value was 8.890, with both sensitivity and specificity of 0.617.The combination of the TyG index, maternal age, and pre-pregnancy body mass index proved to be a superior predictor of GDM than the TyG index alone (AUC: 0.672 vs. 0.641, P < 0.01). After adjusting for multiple factors, the analyses indicated that the TyG index was associated with an increased risk of gestational hypertension. However, no significant association was noted between the TyG index and the risk of preeclampsia, placental abruption, intrauterine distress, or premature rupture of membranes. CONCLUSION The TyG index can effectively identify the occurrence of GDM in the second trimester, aligning with previous research. Incorporating the TyG index into routine clinical assessments of maternal health holds significant practical implications. Early identification of high-risk groups enables healthcare providers to implement timely interventions, such as increased monitoring frequency for high-risk pregnant women and personalized nutritional counseling and health education. These measures can help prevent or alleviate potential maternal and infant complications, thereby enhancing the overall health outcomes for both mothers and babies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore the impact of the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index on the severity of coronary stenosis and the risk of in-hospital mortality in patients with acute ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). DESIGN A multicentre retrospective cohort study. SETTING Patients with STEMI undergoing PCI from three centres in China from 2015 to 2019. PARTICIPANTS A total of 1491 individuals presenting with STEMI were enrolled. PRIMARY OUTCOME MEASURE The degree of coronary stenosis was quantified by the Gensini score (GS). The association between the TyG index and the severity of coronary stenosis was explored by using a logistic regression analysis. Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were used to investigate the associations between the variables and in-hospital mortality. RESULTS We found a significant correlation between the TyG index and the degree of coronary stenosis in the present study. The TyG index was an independent risk factor for the severity of coronary stenosis (OR 2.003, p<0.001). Using the lowest tertile of the TyG (T1) group as a reference, the adjusted ORs for the T2 group and the T3 group and a high GS were 1.732 (p<0.001), 1.968 (p<0.001), respectively, and all p for trend <0.001. For predicting a high GS, the TyG index's area under the curve was 0.668 (95% CI 0.635 to 0.700, p<0.001). Additionally, the TyG index was further demonstrated to be an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality in patients with STEMI (HR 1.525, p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS The TyG index was associated with the severity of coronary stenosis and all-cause in-hospital mortality in patients with STEMI, which may help physicians precisely risk-stratify patients and implement individualised treatment.

Abstract
Background & aims Metabolic disease prevalence has increased in many regions, and is closely associated with dyslipidemia. Rapid growth refers to a significant increase in growth velocity above the normal range, particularly in infants and children, and is highly prevalent in congenital deficiency infants. But the association between dyslipidemia and rapid growth remains controversial. We performed this meta-analysis to investigate the lipid profile in subjects with and without postnatal rapid growth, and to determine what are the confounding factors. Methods Medline, EMBASE, China National Knowledge Infrastructure Chinese citation database and WANFANG database were searched (last search in May 2021). Publication bias was examined by constructing funnel plots, Egger's linear regression test and Begg's rank correlation test. Results The fixed effects model would be adopted if I2 is less than 25%, otherwise random effects model would be used. There were 11 articles involved with a total of 1148 participants (539 boys and 609 girls, mean age=7.4 years). Pooled analysis found that rapid growth was negatively associated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (weighted mean difference=-0.068, 95%CI [-0.117, -0.020]), but not associated with triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Stratified analysis suggested that increased TG were found in rapid growth subjects from developing countries. Higher TC was observed for rapid growth participants of follow-up age ≤8 years old, rapid growth duration ≤2 years, preterm, low birth weight, and from developing countries. But decreased TC was observed in small for gestational age (SGA) rapid growth subjects. Decreased LDL-C had been documented in rapid growth subjects of follow-up age >8 years old, from developed countries, and SGA. At last, rapid growth groups had lower HDL-C in infants of rapid growth duration >2 years and from developed countries. Conclusion Rapid growth is associated with lipid profiles, particularly during early childhood, and this relationship is influenced by factors such as the duration of growth, the level of national development, and birth weight. These findings are significant for the development of strategies to prevent metabolic diseases.This review was registered in PROSPERO International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/) with the registration number CRD42020154240.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the clinical application value of serum heme oxygenase (HO)-1expression level in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and, based on that, establish a diagnostic model combined with glucose regulatory protein 78 (GRP78) so as to clarify its diagnostic effectiveness and application value. Methods: A total of 210 NAFLD patients diagnosed by abdominal B-ultrasound and liver elastography were included, and at the same time, 170 healthy controls were enrolled. The general clinical data, peripheral blood cell counts, and biochemical indicators of the research subjects were collected. The expression levels of HO-1 and GRP78 were detected using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Multivariate analysis was used to screen independent risk factors for NAFLD. Visual output was performed through nomogram diagrams, and the diagnostic model was constructed. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC), calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to evaluate the diagnostic effectiveness of NAFLD. Measurement data were analyzed using a t-test or Mann-Whitney U rank sum test to detect data differences between groups. Enumeration data were analyzed using the Fisher's exact probability test or the Pearson χ(2) test. Results: Compared with the healthy control group, the white blood cell count, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GTT), fasting blood glucose (Glu), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), serum HO-1, and GRP78 levels were significantly increased in the NAFLD group patients (P < 0.05). Binary logistic analysis results showed that AST, TG, LDL-C, serum HO-1, and GRP78 were independent risk factors for NAFLD (P < 0.05). A nomogram clinical predictive model HGATL was established using HO-1 (H), GRP78 (G) combined with AST (A), TG (T), and LDL-C (L), with the formula P=-21.469+3.621×HO-1+0.116 ×GRP78+0.674×AST+6.250×TG+4.122 ×LDL-C. The results confirmed that the area under the ROC curve of the HGATL model was 0.965 8, with an optimal cutoff value of 81.69, a sensitivity of 87.06%, a specificity of 92.82%, a P < 0.05, and the diagnostic effectiveness significantly higher than that of a single indicator. The calibration curve and DCA both showed that the model had good diagnostic performance. Conclusion: The HGATL model can be used as a novel, non-invasive diagnosis model for NAFLD and has a positive application value in NAFLD diagnosis and therapeutic effect evaluation. Therefore, it should be explored and promoted in clinical applications.

Abstract
AIM Insulin resistance (IR) may participate in the pathogenesis of hypertension by mediating low-grade systemic inflammation. The triglycerides-glucose (TyG) index has recently been suggested as a reliable alternative biochemical marker of IR compared with traditional methods. Herein, we speculated TyG index may also be associated with hypertension. METHODS Data of adults were extracted from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) in 2009-2015 in this retrospective cohort study. The TyG index was calculated using the formula: TyG = Ln [fasting triglycerides (mg/dL) ×fasting glucose (mg/dL)/2]. Associations between TyG index and hypertension were evaluated by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analyses of age and gender were also performed. In addition, we assessed the interaction effect between TyG index and body mass index (BMI) on hypertension in participants with different age and gender. RESULTS Among 3,413 eligible participants, 1,627 (47.67%) developed hypertension. The average TyG index in hypertension group and non-hypertension group was 8.58 and 8.39 respectively. After adjusting for covariates, we found that compared with participants with TyG index ≤ 8.41 (median value), those who had higher TyG index seemed to have higher odds of hypertension [OR = 1.17, 95%CI: (1.01-1.37)]. Similarly, this association was also discovered in participants who aged ≤ 65 years old [OR = 1.19, 95%CI: (1.01-1.39)] or were female [OR = 1.35, 95%CI: (1.10-1.65)]. Additionally, there was a potential additive interaction effect between obesity and TyG index on hypertension. CONCLUSION High TyG index was associated with high odds of hypertension in general population in China, but the causal relationship between them needed further exploration.

Abstract
The connection between triglyceride-rich lipoproteins and cardiometabolic multimorbidity, characterized by the concurrence of at least two of type 2 diabetes, ischemic heart disease, and stroke, has not been definitively established. We aim to examine the prospective associations between serum remnant cholesterol, triglycerides, and the risks of progression from first cardiometabolic disease to multimorbidity via multistate modeling in the UK Biobank. We also evaluate the causality of these associations via Mendelian randomization using 13 biologically relevant SNPs as the genetic instruments. Here we show that elevated remnant cholesterol and triglycerides are significantly associated with gradually higher risks of cardiometabolic multimorbidity, particularly the progression of ischemic heart disease to the multimorbidity of ischemic heart disease and type 2 diabetes. These results advocate for effective management of remnant cholesterol and triglycerides as a potential strategy in mitigating the risks of cardiometabolic multimorbidity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exercise-associated secondary amenorrhea results in estrogen deficiency, which may lead to dysfunction in estrogen's normal cardioprotective pathways. Estrogen may be essential in a woman's endothelial adaptations to exercise. The objective of this review was to assess the association between secondary amenorrhea in physically active women and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. METHODS AND RESULTS A literature search was performed in January 2023 and updated in August 2023 of the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (EBSCOhost), Cochrane Library, Embase (Ovid), MEDLINE (Ovid), SPORTDiscus (EBSCOhost), and Scopus from inception to present with no date or language limitations. Citation chaining was done to screen for additional studies. Eight sources were searched for gray literature. Studies that compared physically active women with amenorrhea to physically active women with eumenorrhea aged 18 to 35 years with evidence of CVD, alterations to cardiovascular physiology, or CVD risks were included. Eighteen observational studies from 3 countries were included. Overall, the quality of evidence was good. A meta-analysis was performed. Physically active women with secondary amenorrhea had significantly lower estradiol, flow-mediated dilation, resting heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure and higher total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. CONCLUSIONS Estrogen deficiency resulting from exercise-associated secondary amenorrhea in physically active women may impact cardiovascular physiology and certain CVD risk factors. The research in this area is observational; therefore, findings should be interpreted cautiously. However, as exercise-associated secondary amenorrhea is reversible and the primary prevention of CVD is important for public health, it may be important to treat secondary amenorrhea and restore estrogen levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hemorrhagic stroke (HS), including non-traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), constitutes a substantial proportion of cerebrovascular incidents, accounting for around 30% of stroke cases. The triglyceride-glucose index (TyG-i) represents a precise insulin resistance (IR) indicator, a crucial metabolic disturbance. Existing literature has demonstrated an association between TyG-i and all-cause mortality (ACM) among individuals suffering from ischemic stroke (IS). Yet, the TyG-i prognostic implications for severe HS patients necessitating intensive care unit (ICU) admission are not clearly understood. Considering the notably elevated mortality and morbidity associated with HS relative to IS, investigating this association is warranted. Our primary aim was to investigate TyG-i and ACM association among critically ill HS patients within an ICU context. METHODS Herein, patients with severe HS were identified by accessing the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-IV (MIMIC-IV, version 2.2) database, using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-9/10 as diagnostic guidelines. Subsequently, we stratified the subjects into quartiles, relying on their TyG-i scores. Moreover, we measured mortality at ICU, in-hospital, 30 days, 90 days, and 1 year as the outcomes. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were deployed for elucidating the relation between the TyG-i and ACM while utilizing the Kaplan-Meier (K-M) method to estimate survival curves. The findings' robustness was assessed by conducting subgroup analysis and interaction tests employing likelihood ratio tests. RESULTS The analysis included 1475 patients, with a male predominance of 54.4%. Observed mortality rates in the ICU, hospital, 30 days, 90 days, and 1 year were 7.3%, 10.9%, 13.8%, 19.7%, and 27.3%, respectively. Multivariate Cox regression analysis results manifested that heightened TyG-i was significantly related to ACM at 30 days (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 1.32; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.05-1.67; P = 0.020), 90 days (aHR: 1.27; 95% CI: 1.04-1.55; P = 0.019), and 1 year (aHR: 1.22; 95% CI: 1.03-1.44; P = 0.023). The results of RCS analysis demonstrated a progressive elevation in ACM risk with rising TyG-i levels. Interaction tests found no significant effect modification in this relationship. CONCLUSION In summary, TyG-i exhibits a significant correlation with ACM among patients enduring critical illness due to HS. This correlation underscores the probable utility of TyG-i as a prognostic tool for stratifying HS patients according to their risk of mortality. Applying TyG-i in clinical settings could enhance therapeutic decision-making and the management of disease trajectories. Additionally, this investigation augments existing research on the linkage between the TyG-i and IS, elucidating the TyG-i's role in predicting mortality across diverse stroke categories.

Abstract
In this study, the antifatigue effect and mechanism of peanut sprouts were explored. BALB/c mice divided into three groups (control, dark and UV-C) were respectively supplemented with a normal diet, peanut sprouts (dark germination) added diet and stilbenes-enriched peanut sprouts (UV-C radiated germination) added diet. Results showed that swimming time and levels of blood glucose and antioxidant enzymes significantly increased, while contents of triglyceride and malondialdehyde notably decreased by peanut sprout supplementation. Besides, combined analysis of gut microbiota gene sequencing and targeted metabolomics of fecal metabolites revealed that peanut sprout supplementation up-regulated abundances and metabolic transformations of Catenibacillus, Odoribacter, Prevotellaceae-UCG-001 and Butyricicoccus while it down-regulated the abundance of Parabacteroides. Consequently, contents of sebacic acid, azelaic acid, suberic acid, heptanoic acid, pimelic acid, aminoadipic acid and mono-phenolics notably increased, which were markedly correlated with the antifatigue effect. Compared with the dark group, the swimming time, glutathione peroxidase activity, methylmalonylcarnitine content and abundances of Butyricicoccus, Catenibacillus and Lachnospiraceae NK4A136 were higher in the UV-C group, while opposite results were obtained for the levels of triglyceride, malondialdehyde, alpha-linolenic acid, gamma-linolenic acid, 10Z-heptadecenoic acid and palmitelaidic acid. Overall, peanut sprout supplementation could alleviate fatigue by modulating gut microbiota composition to promote fatty acid oxidation and lysine and stilbene catabolism to increase energy supply and regulate redox balance. UV-C-radiated peanut sprout supplementation could alleviate fatigue more effectively by up-regulating abundances of Butyricicoccus, Catenibacillus and Lachnospiraceae NK4A136 to promote long-chain fatty acid oxidation and catabolism of flavonoids and stilbenes efficiently.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The connection between total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TC/HDL-C) ratio and stroke risk is controversial. This study aims to examine the connection between the TC/HDL-C ratio and stroke in middle-aged and older individuals who are part of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). METHODS This study conducted a retrospective cohort analysis, enrolling a total of 10,184 participants who met the designated criteria from CHARLS between 2011 and 2012. We then used the Cox proportional-hazards regression model to analyze the relationship between the TC/HDL-C ratio and stroke risk. Using a Cox proportional hazards regression model with cubic spline functions and smooth curve fitting, we were able to identify the non-linear relationship between the TC/HDL-C ratio and stroke occurrence. The sensitivity and subgroup analyses were also performed to investigate the connection between TC/HDL-C ratio and stroke. RESULTS This study revealed a statistically significant association between the TC/HDL-C ratio and stroke risk in subjects aged 45 years or older after adjusting for risk factors (HR: 1.05, 95%CI 1.00-1.10, P = 0.0410). Furthermore, a non-linear connection between the TC/HDL-C ratio and stroke risk was detected, with a TC/HDL-C ratio inflection point of 3.71. We identified a significant positive connection between the TC/HDL-C ratio and stroke risk, when the TC/HDL-C ratio was less than 3.71 (HR: 1.25, 95%CI 1.07-1.45, P = 0.0039). However, their connection was not significant when the TC/HDL-C ratio exceeded 3.71 (HR: 1.00, 95%CI 0.94-1.06, P = 0.9232). The sensitivity analysis and subgroup analyses revealed that our findings were well-robust. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrated a positive, non-linear connection between the TC/HDL-C ratio and stroke risk in middle-aged and older individuals. There was a significant positive connection between the TC/HDL-C ratio and stroke risk, when the TC/HDL-C ratio was less than 3.71. The current research can be used as a guideline to support clinician consultation and optimize stroke prevention measures for middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tissue-specific insulin resistance (IR) predominantly in muscle (muscle IR) or liver (liver IR) has previously been linked to distinct fasting metabolite profiles, but postprandial metabolite profiles have not been investigated in tissue-specific IR yet. Given the importance of postprandial metabolic impairments in the pathophysiology of cardiometabolic diseases, we compared postprandial plasma metabolite profiles in response to a high-fat mixed meal between individuals with predominant muscle IR or liver IR. METHODS This cross-sectional study included data from 214 women and men with BMI 25-40 kg/m2, aged 40-75 years, and with predominant muscle IR or liver IR. Tissue-specific IR was assessed using the muscle insulin sensitivity index (MISI) and hepatic insulin resistance index (HIRI), which were calculated from the glucose and insulin responses during a 7-point oral glucose tolerance test. Plasma samples were collected before (T = 0) and after (T = 30, 60, 120, 240 min) consumption of a high-fat mixed meal and 247 metabolite measures, including lipoproteins, cholesterol, triacylglycerol (TAG), ketone bodies, and amino acids, were quantified using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Differences in postprandial plasma metabolite iAUCs between muscle and liver IR were tested using ANCOVA with adjustment for age, sex, center, BMI, and waist-to-hip ratio. P-values were adjusted for a false discovery rate (FDR) of 0.05 using the Benjamini-Hochberg method. RESULTS Sixty-eight postprandial metabolite iAUCs were significantly different between liver and muscle IR. Liver IR was characterized by greater plasma iAUCs of large VLDL (p = 0.004), very large VLDL (p = 0.002), and medium-sized LDL particles (p = 0.026), and by greater iAUCs of TAG in small VLDL (p = 0.025), large VLDL (p = 0.003), very large VLDL (p = 0.002), all LDL subclasses (all p < 0.05), and small HDL particles (p = 0.011), compared to muscle IR. In liver IR, the postprandial plasma fatty acid (FA) profile consisted of a higher percentage of saturated FA (p = 0.013), and a lower percentage of polyunsaturated FA (p = 0.008), compared to muscle IR. CONCLUSION People with muscle IR or liver IR have distinct postprandial plasma metabolite profiles, with more unfavorable postprandial metabolite responses in those with liver IR compared to muscle IR.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of fasting easing on laboratory measurements of the lipid profile, in order to contribute to the fidelity of interpretation of laboratory results. Starting in October 2022, a Systematic Literature Review (SRL) was carried out, using articles indexed in the electronic databases PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, LILACS and Cochrane Library, following the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes Group (PRISMA). This RSL was registered with PROSPERO, under registration number CRD42022370007. For inclusion, articles had to be original and developed in humans. After evaluating the methodological quality and analyzing the risk of bias, we obtained 16 articles published between 1994 and 2021, providing data on a total of 398,709 individuals, aged between 3 and 93 years. According to the selected studies, lipid profile measurements performed with flexible fasting, in addition to bringing benefits to patients and the pre-analytical system of the clinical laboratory, are more suitable for determining cardiovascular risk, mainly through the assessment of values obtained in the determination of triglycerides. It is therefore concluded that the optional use of fasting must be established through medical advice. In addition, laboratory methods and readings must be readjusted to this reality, informing through the report the parameters related to the lipid profile with and without the use of a 12-hour fast.

Abstract
Previous studies found lipid levels, especially triglycerides (TG), are associated with acute pancreatitis, but their causalities and bi-directions were not fully examined. We determined whether abnormal levels of TG, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) are precursors and/or consequences of acute pancreatitis using bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) with two non-overlapping genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics for lipid levels and acute pancreatitis. We found phenotypic associations that both higher TG levels and lower HDL-C levels contributed to increased risk of acute pancreatitis. Our GWAS meta-analysis of acute pancreatitis identified seven independent signals. Genetically predicted TG was positively associated with acute pancreatitis when using the variants specifically associated with TG using univariable MR [Odds ratio (OR), 95% CI 2.02, 1.22-3.31], but the reversed direction from acute pancreatitis to TG was not observed (mean difference = 0.003, SE = 0.002, P-value = 0.138). However, a bidirectional relationship of HDL-C and acute pancreatitis was observed: A 1-SD increment of genetically predicted HDL-C was associated with lower risk of acute pancreatitis (OR, 95% CI 0.84, 0.76-0.92) and genetically predisposed individuals with acute pancreatitis have, on average, 0.005 SD lower HDL-C (mean difference = - 0.005, SE = 0.002, P-value = 0.004). Our MR analysis confirms the evidence of TG as a risk factor of acute pancreatitis but not a consequence. A potential bidirectional relationship of HDL-C and acute pancreatitis occurs and raises the prospect of HDL-C modulation in the acute pancreatitis prevention and treatment.

Abstract
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a known risk factor for gestational hypertension which further progress toward conditions like proteinuria, dyslipidemia, thrombocytopenia, pulmonary edema leading to Preeclampsia (PE). Pregnancy can be a challenging time for many women, especially those diagnosed with GDM and PE. Thus, the current prospective study investigates the association of OGTT glucose levels with systolic and diastolic blood pressure and lipid profile parameters in pregnant women diagnosed with GDM and PE. A total of 140 pregnant women were stratified into GDM (n = 50), PE (n = 40) and controls (n = 50). Two hour 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed for screening GDM. Biochemical parameters analysis of OGTT, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (Tg), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), urinary albumin and creatinine were tested to find urinary albumin creatinine ratio (uACR). Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA followed by post hoc test and regression analysis. Among the studied groups, GDM and PE groups showed no significant difference in age and increased BMI. Increased 2 h OGTT & TC in GDM group; elevated uACR, systolic/diastolic blood pressure, Tg, HDL-C, LDL-C in PE group was observed and differ significantly (p < 0.0001) with other groups. A significant positive effect of 2 h OGTT was observed on blood pressure (R2: GDM = 0.85, PE = 0.71) and lipid profile determinants (R2: GDM = 0.85, PE = 0.33) at p < 0.0001. The current study concludes that glucose intolerance during the later weeks of pregnancy is associated with gestational hypertension and hyperlipidemia as a risk factor for PE. Further research is needed for a detailed assessment of maternal glucose metabolism at various pregnancy stages, including the use of more sensitive markers such as C-peptide and their relation to pregnancy-related hypertensive disorders.

Abstract
Physical exercise intervention can significantly improve the liver of patients with Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but it is unknown which exercise mode has the best effect on liver improvement in NAFLD patients. Therefore, we systematically evaluated the effect of exercise therapy on liver and blood index function of NAFLD patients through network meta-analysis (NMA). Through systematic retrieval of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, EBSCO, and CNKI (National Knowledge Infrastructure), two reviewers independently screened the literature, extracted data, and assessed the risk of bias of the included studies by means of databases from inception to January 2023. The NMA was performed using the inconsistency model. A total of 43 studies, 2070 NAFLD patients were included: aerobic training (n = 779), resistance training (n = 159), high-intensity interval training (n = 160), aerobic training + resistance training (n = 96). The results indicate that aerobic training + resistance training could significantly improve serum total cholesterol (TC) (Surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) = 71.7), triglyceride (TG) (SUCRA = 96.8), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (SUCRA = 86.1) in patients with NAFLD including triglycerides. Aerobic training is the best mode to improve ALT (SUCRA = 83.9) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (SUCRA = 72.3). Resistance training is the best mode to improve aspartate transaminase (AST) (SUCRA = 81.7). Taking various benefits into account, we believe that the best modality of exercise for NAFLD patients is aerobic training + resistance training. In our current network meta-analysis, these exercise methods have different effects on the six indicators of NAFLD, which provides some reference for further formulating exercise prescription for NAFLD patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The association of the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index with intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ICAS) and extracranial atherosclerotic stenosis (ECAS) is unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship of TyG index with the distribution and severity of ICAS and ECAS. METHOD Patients who underwent digital subtraction angiography (DSA) for evaluating ICAS/ECAS in Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University from January 2017 to October 2021 were retrospectively enrolled in our study. Clinical characteristics, DSA data, blood routine, lipid profile and fasting glucose were recorded. The association of TyG index and ICAS/ECAS status were investigated in four aspects: location and distribution of stenosis, stenosis severity and whether stenosis is symptomatic. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association. Restricted cubic splines were constructed to model the non-linear relationship between the TyG index and different arterial stenosis status. RESULTS Among 1129 included patients, the median age was 62 (IQR 55-68) years, and 71.3% were male. The median TyG index was 8.81 (8.40, 9.21). Elevated TyG index was significantly associated with ICAS, combined ICAS/ECAS, anterior circulation stenosis, posterior circulation stenosis, combined anterior/posterior circulation stenosis, severe stenosis, both asymptomatic and symptomatic stenosis. This association was maintained after adjusting for age, sex, smoking, drinking, medical history of hypertension and stroke, platelet, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, and low-density lipoprotein. Multivariable-adjusted spline regression models showed that a progressively increasing risk of arterial stenosis was related to an elevated TyG index. CONCLUSION Elevated TyG index was associated with ICAS/ECAS. TyG index might be a useful indicator of ICAS and severe stenosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The global dementia prevalence is surging, necessitating research into contributing factors. We aimed to investigate the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS), its components, serum uric acid (SUA) levels, and dementia risk. METHODS Our prospective study comprised 466,788 participants without pre-existing MetS from the UK Biobank. We confirmed dementia diagnoses based on the ICD-10 criteria (F00-03). To evaluate the dementia risk concerning MetS, its components, and SUA levels, we applied Cox proportional hazards models, while adjusting for demographic factors. RESULTS Over a median follow-up of 12.7 years, we identified 6845 dementia cases. Individuals with MetS had a 25% higher risk of all-cause dementia (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.25, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.19-1.31). The risk increased with the number of MetS components including central obesity, dyslipidemia for high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia for triglycerides. Particularly for those with all five components (HR = 1.76, 95% CI = 1.51-2.04). Dyslipidemia for HDL cholesterol, hypertension, hyperglycemia, and dyslipidemia for triglycerides were independently associated with elevated dementia risk (p < 0.01). MetS was further linked to an increased risk of all-cause dementia (11%) and vascular dementia (VD, 50%) among individuals with SUA levels exceeding 400 μmol/L (all-cause dementia: HR = 1.11, 95% CI = 1.02-1.21; VD: HR = 1.50, 95% CI = 1.28-1.77). CONCLUSIONS Our study provides robust evidence supporting the association between MetS, its components, and dementia risk. These findings emphasize the importance of considering MetS and SUA levels in assessing dementia risk, offering valuable insights for prevention and management strategies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Insulin resistance (IR) imposes a significant burden on inflammatory diseases, and the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, which is an easily accessible indicator for detecting IR, holds great application potential in predicting the risk of arthritis. The aim of this study is to analyze the association between the TyG index and the risk of new-onset arthritis in the common population aged over 45 using a prospective cohort study design. METHOD This population-based cohort study involved 4418 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (from Wave 1 to Wave 4). Multivariate logistic regression models were employed to investigate the association between the TyG index and new-onset arthritis, and RCS analyses were used to investigate potential non-linear relationships. Moreover, decision trees were utilized to identify high-risk populations for incident arthritis. RESULT Throughout a 7-year follow-up interval, it was found that 396 participants (8.96%) developed arthritis. The last TyG index quartile group (Q4) presented the highest risk of arthritis (OR, 1.39; 95% CI, 1.01, 1.91). No dose-response relationship between the TyG index and new-onset arthritis was identified (Poverall=0.068, Pnon-linear=0.203). In the stratified analysis, we observed BMI ranging from 18.5 to 24 exhibited a heightened susceptibility to the adverse effects of the TyG index on the risk of developing arthritis (P for interaction = 0.035). CONCLUSION The TyG index can be used as an independent risk indicator for predicting the start of new-onset arthritis within individuals aged 45 and above within the general population. Improving glucose and lipid metabolism, along with insulin resistance, may play a big part in improving the primary prevention of arthritis.

Abstract
There is an association between emotional eating and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors; however, little is known about this association in the police force. This study explores the associations between emotional eating and CVD risk factors in law enforcement officers in North Carolina. Four hundred and five officers completed The Emotional Eating Scale, and 221 of them completed the assessment for CVD-related markers. Descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and multiple linear regression analyses were performed. Emotional eating in response to anger was significantly positively associated with body weight (β = 1.51, t = 2.07, p = 0.04), diastolic blood pressure (β = 0.83, t = 2.18, p = 0.03), and mean arterial pressure (β = 0.84, t = 2.19, p = 0.03) after adjusting for age and use of blood pressure medicine. Emotional eating in response to depression was significantly positively associated with triglycerides (β = 5.28, t = 2.49, p = 0.02), while the emotional eating in response to anxiety was significantly negatively associated with triglycerides (β = -11.42, t = -2.64, p = 0.01), after adjusting for age and use of cholesterol medicine. Our findings offer new insights to address emotional eating and lower CVD risk in law enforcement officers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between the triglyceride glucose (TyG) index and osteoarthritis (OA) remains unclear. The objective of this study was to examine potential associations between an elevated TyG index and an increased risk of OA prevalence. METHODS 3,921 participants with OA from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2015-2020) were included in this study. Participants were categorized into quartiles based on TyG index, which was determined using the formula: Ln [triglyceride (mg/dL) fasting blood glucose (mg/dL)/2]. Weighted multivariable regression, subgroup analyses, and threshold effect analyses were performed to calculate the independent association between TyG index and OA. RESULTS A total of 25,514 people were enrolled, with a mean TyG index of 8.48 ± 0.65. The results of multivariable logistic regression analysis after full adjustment showed a significant association between higher TyG index values and an increased risk of OA. Specifically, each incremental unit increase in the TyG index was associated with a 634% higher risk of OA [OR = 7.34; 95% CI: 2.25, 23.93; p = 0.0010]. Based on interaction tests, age, gender, BMI, and smoking status did not significantly affect the relationship between the TyG index and OA, while diabetes showed a stronger positive correlation between the TyG index and OA. CONCLUSION An increased risk of OA was associated with a higher TyG index. TyG could be a valuable predictor of OA and offer novel perspectives on the assessment and treatment of OA.

Abstract
Objective The incidence of early-onset type 2 diabetes (T2D) has increased significantly, with insulin resistance (IR) and obesity being the main drivers of its onset. This study aims to investigate the clinical characteristics of early-onset T2D and its association with triglyceride glucose body mass index (TyG-BMI), an emerging surrogate of IR. Methods A total of 1000 adults newly diagnosed with T2D were enrolled and divided into early-onset T2D (18~40 years, N=500) and late-onset T2D groups (≥40 years, N=500). Independent t and chi-squared tests were used to compare the characteristics of the two groups, and logistic regression analysis, trend tests, restricted cubic spline curves (RCSs), and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were used to identify the relationship between TyG-BMI and early-onset T2D. Results Patients with early-onset T2D were more likely to have a higher body mass index (BMI), hemoglobin A1C (HbA1c), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), serum uric acid (SUA), triglyceride glucose index (TyG), and TyG-BMI (P < 0.05). A higher TyG-BMI was associated with an increased risk of early-onset T2D (P < 0.001). The RCSs showed a nonlinear relationship between TyG-BMI and early-onset T2D, and the slope of the curve increased with an increase in TyG-BMI (P for nonlinearity < 0.001). In the subgroup analysis, additive interactions between TyG-BMI and the risk of early-onset T2D were observed for sex, family history of diabetes, BMI, fatty liver, and hypertension (P < 0.001). ROC curve showed that the area under the curve of TyG-BMI was 0.6781, which was larger than its main components (TyG, BMI, FPG, TG). The best cutoff value was 254.865, the sensitivity was 74.6%, and the specificity was 53.6%. Conclusion Patients with early-onset T2D are characterized by severe IR, metabolic disorders, and being overweight/obese and an increase in TyG-BMI is independently associated with an increased risk of early-onset T2D.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Angiopoietin-like protein 3 (ANGPTL3) is secreted by hepatocytes and inhibits lipoprotein lipase and endothelial lipase activity. Previous studies reported the correlation between plasma ANGPTL3 levels and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Recently ANGPTL3 was found to preferentially bind to HDL in healthy human circulation. Here, we examined whether ANGPTL3, as a component of HDL, modulates HDL function and affects HDL other components in human and mice with non-diabetes or type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS HDL was isolated from the plasma of female non-diabetic subjects and type-2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) patients. Immunoprecipitation, western blot, and ELISA assays were used to examine ANGPTL3 levels in HDL. Db/m and db/db mice, AAV virus mediated ANGPTL3 overexpression and knockdown models and ANGPTL3 knockout mice were used. The cholesterol efflux capacity induced by HDL was analyzed in macrophages preloaded with fluorescent cholesterol. The anti-inflammation capacity of HDL was assessed using flow cytometry to measure VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 expression levels in TNF-α-stimulated endothelial cells pretreated with HDL. RESULTS ANGPTL3 was found to bind to HDL and be a component of HDL in both non-diabetic subjects and T2DM patients. Flag-ANGPTL3 was found in the HDL of transgenic mice overexpressing Flag-ANGPTL3. ANGPLT3 of HDL was positively associated with cholesterol efflux in female non-diabetic controls (r = 0.4102, p = 0.0117) but not in female T2DM patients (r = - 0.1725, p = 0.3224). Lower ANGPTL3 levels of HDL were found in diabetic (db/db) mice compared to control (db/m) mice and were associated with reduced cholesterol efflux and inhibition of VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 expression in endothelial cells (p < 0.05 for all). Following AAV-mediated ANGPTL3 cDNA transfer in db/db mice, ANGPTL3 levels were found to be increased in HDL, and corresponded to increased cholesterol efflux and decreased ICAM-1 expression. In contrast, knockdown of ANGPTL3 levels in HDL by AAV-mediated shRNA transfer led to a reduction in HDL function (p < 0.05 for both). Plasma total cholesterol, total triglycerides, HDL-c, protein components of HDL and the cholesterol efflux function of HDL were lower in ANGPTL3-/- mice than ANGPTL3+/+ mice, suggesting that ANGPTL3 in HDL may regulate HDL function by disrupting the balance of protein components in HDL. CONCLUSION ANGPTL3 was identified as a component of HDL in humans and mice. ANGPTL3 of HDL regulated cholesterol efflux and the anti-inflammatory functions of HDL in T2DM mice. Both the protein components of HDL and cholesterol efflux capacity of HDL were decreased in ANGPTL3-/- mice. Our findings suggest that ANGPTL3 in HDL may regulate HDL function by disrupting the balance of protein components in HDL. Our study contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of the role of ANGPTL3 in lipid metabolism.

Abstract
This study aims to update the evidence and clarify whether cranberry possesses lipid-lowering and hypoglycemic properties in humans. PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched to identify relevant articles published up to December 2023. In total, 3145 publications were reviewed and 16 of them were included for qualitative synthesis and meta-analysis. Stata 15.0 and Review Manager 5.4 were applied for statistical analyses. The results revealed a significant decrease in the total cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TC/HDL-C) (MD = -0.24; 95% CI: -0.45, -0.04; peffect = 0.02) and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (MD = -0.59; 95% CI: -1.05, -0.14; peffect = 0.01) with cranberry consumption. However, it did not influence total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglyceride (TG), fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and fasting insulin. In subgroup analysis, cranberry consumption in dried form (capsules, powder, and tablets) was found to significantly decrease the fasting insulin level (three studies, one hundred sixty-five participants, MD = -2.16; 95% CI: -4.24, -0.07; peffect = 0.04), while intervention duration, health conditions, and dosage of polyphenols and anthocyanins had no impact on blood lipid and glycemic parameters. In summary, cranberry might have potential benefits in regulating lipid and glucose profiles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This multicenter observational study aimed to determine whether dyslipidemia or obesity contributes more significantly to unfavorable clinical outcomes in patients experiencing a first-ever ischemic stroke (IS). METHODS The study employed a machine learning predictive model to investigate associations among body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage (BFP), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), triglycerides (TG), and total cholesterol (TC) with adverse outcomes in IS patients. Extensive real-world clinical data was utilized, and risk factors significantly linked to adverse outcomes were identified through multivariate analysis, propensity score matching (PSM), and regression discontinuity design (RDD) techniques. Furthermore, these findings were validated via a nationwide multicenter prospective cohort study. RESULTS In the derived cohort, a total of 45,162 patients diagnosed with IS were assessed, with 522 experiencing adverse outcomes. A multifactorial analysis incorporating PSM and RDD methods identified TG (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 1.110; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.041-1.183; P < 0.01) and TC (adjusted OR = 1.139; 95%CI: 1.039-1.248; P < 0.01) as risk factors. However, BMI, BFP, and HDL showed no significant effect. In the validation cohort, 1410 controls and 941 patients were enrolled, confirming that lipid levels are more strongly correlated with the prognosis of IS patients compared to obesity (TC, OR = 1.369; 95%CI: 1.069-1.754; P < 0.05; TG, OR = 1.332; 95%CI: 1.097-1.618; P < 0.01). CONCLUSION This study suggests that dyslipidemia has a more substantial impact on the prognosis of IS patients compared to obesity. This highlights the importance of prioritizing dyslipidemia management in the treatment and prevention of adverse outcomes in IS patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prediabetes is a high-risk state for diabetes, and numerous studies have shown that the body mass index (BMI) and triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index play significant roles in risk prediction for blood glucose metabolism. This study aims to evaluate the relative importance of BMI combination with TyG index (TyG-BMI) in predicting the recovery from prediabetic status to normal blood glucose levels. METHODS A total of 25,397 prediabetic subjects recruited from 32 regions across China. Normal fasting glucose (NFG), prediabetes, and diabetes were defined referring to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) criteria. After normalizing the independent variables, the impact of TyG-BMI on the recovery or progression of prediabetes was analyzed through the Cox regression models. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was utilized to visualize and compare the predictive value of TyG-BMI and its constituent components in prediabetes recovery/progression. RESULTS During the average observation period of 2.96 years, 10,305 individuals (40.58%) remained in the prediabetic state, 11,278 individuals (44.41%) recovered to NFG, and 3,814 individuals (15.02%) progressed to diabetes. The results of multivariate Cox regression analysis demonstrated that TyG-BMI was negatively associated with recovery from prediabetes to NFG and positively associated with progression from prediabetes to diabetes. Further ROC analysis revealed that TyG-BMI had higher impact and predictive value in predicting prediabetes recovering to NFG or progressing to diabetes in comparison to the TyG index and BMI. Specifically, the TyG-BMI threshold for predicting prediabetes recovery was 214.68, while the threshold for predicting prediabetes progression was 220.27. Additionally, there were significant differences in the relationship of TyG-BMI with prediabetes recovering to NFG or progressing to diabetes within age subgroups. In summary, TyG-BMI is more suitable for assessing prediabetes recovery or progression in younger populations (< 45 years old). CONCLUSIONS This study, for the first time, has revealed the significant impact and predictive value of the TyG index in combination with BMI on the recovery from prediabetic status to normal blood glucose levels. From the perspective of prediabetes intervention, maintaining TyG-BMI within the threshold of 214.68 holds crucial significance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The incidence of hyperlipidemic acute pancreatitis (HLAP) has been increasing annually. However, population-based morbidity assessments need to be updated. Early, rapid, and effective lipid-lowering may minimize pancreatic injury and improve clinical prognosis. It is essential to choose the proper treatment. However, treatment options for HLAP are controversial, and there is no uniform treatment protocol. METHODS In this retrospective study, 127 patients with hyperlipidemic severe acute pancreatitis (HL-SAP) were registered from January 2018 to December 2022 at the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University. Medical and radiological records of hospitalized patients were collected to determine clinical features, severity, complications, mortality, recurrence rate, and treatment. Risk factors for HL-SAP were analyzed using multifactorial logistic regression. A propensity score matching method was used to compare the clinical outcomes of standard and plasma exchange therapies. RESULTS In this research, the prevalence of HLAP increased about 1.6 times, and the prevalence of HL-SAP was 50.60%. HL-SAP occurs most often in people between the ages of 30 and 39. Amylase exceeded 110 U/L in 84.3% of patients and 330 U/L in only 47.2%. 83.5% of HL-SAP patients had fatty livers and high body mass index (BMI). A total of 48.0% of patients experienced organ failure, ICU treatment (55.1%), recurrence (33.1%), and death (21.3%). Between the hyperlipidemic group and the biliary group in terms of age, gender, BMI, fatty liver, pleural effusion, abdominal constriction syndrome (ACS), multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), length of hospital, medical costs, morbidity and mortality, triglyceride, cholesterol, creatinine, blood glucose, D-dimer, amylase, albumin, lactate dehydrogenase, serum phosphorus, serum calcium, oxygenation index, and recurrence rate were statistically significant (P < 0.05). High BMI (P = 0.0038, odds ratio (OR) = 1.336, 95%CI: 0.99-1.804), high C-reactive protein (CRP) (P = 0.022, OR = 1.011, 95%CI: 1.003-1.019), low calcium (P = 0.003, OR = 0.016, 95%CI. 0.001-0.239), low albumin (P = 0.012, OR = 0.045, 95%CI: -0.062-0.192), and high D-dimer (P = 0.041, OR = 0.619, 95%CI: 0.053-2.510) were risk factors for HL-SAP, according to multifactorial logistic regression analysis. Adjusted for propensity score matching (PSM), Serum triglyceride (TG) was significantly lower in both the standard treatment (P < 0.001) and plasma exchange (P < 0.001) groups at 48 h compared with the initial test after the attack. Clearance (83.20% ± 0.0% vs. 84.4% ± 0.0%, P = 0.531), length of hospital stay (19.9 ± 4.9 vs. 19.8 ± 11.1, P = 0.092), and death (26.3% vs. 23.6%, P = 0.791) showed no difference between the two groups. However, the difference in medical costs(P = 0.039)between the two groups was statistically significant. CONCLUSION The incidence of HLAP exhibited a significant increase, remarkable severity, recurrent trend, and mortality. High BMI, high CRP, low calcium, low albumin, and high D-dimer are risk factors for HL-SAP. Compared with standardized treatment, plasma exchange does not improve the prognosis of HL-SAP patients, and standardized treatment is equally effective, safe, and low-cost in early treatment.

Abstract
Purpose This study aims to compare the association of hypertension plus hyperuricemia (HTN-HUA) with seven anthropometric indexes. These include the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral adiposity index (VAI), triglyceride-glucose index (TyG), body roundness index (BRI), a body shape index (ABSI), and the cardiometabolic index (CMI). Methods Data was procured from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which recruited a representative population aged 18 years and above to calculate these seven indexes. Logistic regression analysis was employed to delineate their correlation and to compute the odds ratios (OR). Concurrently, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were utilized to evaluate the predictive power of the seven indexes. Results A total of 23,478 subjects were included in the study. Among these, 6,537 (27.84%) were patients with HUA alone, 2,015 (8.58%) had HTN alone, and 2,836 (12.08%) had HTN-HUA. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the AIP, LAP, VAI, TyG, BRI, ABSI, and CMI were all significantly associated with concurrent HTN-HUA. The OR for the highest quartile of the seven indexes for HTN-HUA were as follows: AIP was 4.45 (95% CI 3.82-5.18), LAP was 9.52 (95% CI 7.82-11.59), VAI was 4.53 (95% CI 38.9-5.28), TyG was 4.91 (95% CI 4.15-5.80), BRI was 9.08 (95% CI 7.45-11.07), ABSI was 1.71 (95% CI 1.45 -2.02), and CMI was 6.57 (95% CI 5.56-7.76). Notably, LAP and BRI demonstrated significant discriminatory abilities for HTN-HUA, with area under the curve (AUC) values of 0.72 (95% CI 0.71 - 0.73) and 0.73 (95% CI 0.72 - 0.74) respectively. Conclusion The AIP, LAP, VAI, TyG, BRI, ABSI, and CMI all show significant correlation with HTN-HUA. Notably, both LAP and BRI demonstrate the capability to differentiate cases of HTN-HUA. Among these, BRI is underscored for its effective, non-invasive nature in predicting HTN-HUA, making it a superior choice for early detection and management strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood cancer survivors have increased risk of dyslipidemia and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and associated cardiovascular risks of specific lipid abnormalities among childhood cancer survivors. METHODS Comprehensive lipid panel measurements were obtained from 4115 5-year survivors, with 3406 (mean age at evaluation = 35.2 years, SD = 10.4 years) not having previous dyslipidemia diagnosis, as well as 624 age, sex, and race and ethnicity matched community controls. RESULTS Previously undiagnosed dyslipidemia with abnormal low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (>160 mg/dL), non-high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (>190 mg/dL), HDL cholesterol (<40 mg/dL for men, <50 mg/dL for women), and triglycerides (>150 mg/dL) were identified in 4%, 6%, 30%, and 17%, respectively. Survivors without previous dyslipidemia diagnosis had higher LDL cholesterol and non-HDL cholesterol and lower HDL cholesterol than community controls. Cranial radiotherapy (relative risk [RR] = 2.2, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.6 to 3.0 for non-HDL cholesterol) and total body irradiation for hematopoietic cell transplantation (RR = 6.7, 95% CI = 3.5 to 13.0 for non-HDL cholesterol; RR = 9.9, 95% CI = 6.0 to 16.3 for triglycerides) were associated with greater risk of dyslipidemia. Diagnoses of low HDL cholesterol (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.9, 95% CI = 1.8 to 4.7) and elevated triglycerides (HR = 3.1, 95% CI = 1.9 to 5.1) were associated with increased risk for myocardial infarction, and diagnoses of high LDL cholesterol (HR = 2.2, 95% CI = 1.3 to 3.7), high non-HDL cholesterol (HR = 2.2, 95% CI = 1.3 to 3.7), low HDL cholesterol (HR = 3.9, 95% CI = 2.8 to 5.4), and elevated triglycerides (HR = 3.8, 95% CI = 2.7 to 5.5) were associated with increased risk for cardiomyopathy. CONCLUSIONS Previously undiagnosed dyslipidemia among childhood cancer survivors was associated with increased risk for myocardial infarction and cardiomyopathy. Comprehensive dyslipidemia evaluation and treatment are needed to reduce cardiovascular morbidity in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The Friedewald equation is the commonly used method of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) calculation, requiring reflex to direct LDL-C measurement when triglycerides (TG) ≥ 400 mg/dL. Recently formulated Sampson and extended Martin/Hopkins methods have been validated with TG up to 800 mg/dL and thus have the potential to replace direct LDL-C measurement. Given the growing prevalence of childhood dyslipidemia, the objective of this study was to compare Sampson and extended Martin/Hopkins methods of LDL-C calculation with the direct measurement in a pediatric cohort with 400 ≤ TG ≤ 799 mg/dL. METHODS This study retrieved standard lipid panels and corresponding direct LDL-C measurements of 131 patients with 400 ≤ TG ≤ 799 mg/dL from a pediatric population. Following the application of Sampson and extended Martin/Hopkins calculations, calculated values were compared with direct LDL-C measurements using ordinary least squares linear regression analysis and bias plotting. RESULTS Both Sampson and extended Martin/Hopkins LDL-C calculations exhibited a strong correlation with the direct measurements (Pearson r = 0.89) in patients with 400 ≤ TG ≤ 800 mg/dL. Average percentages of bias of 45% and 21% were found between the direct LDL-C measurements and Sampson or extended Martin/Hopkins calculations, respectively. CONCLUSION Both Sampson and extended Martin/Hopkins calculations are applicable as clinical alternatives of direct LDL-C measurement in pediatric patients given 400 ≤ TG ≤ 799 mg/dL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperlipidaemic acute pancreatitis (HLAP) has become the most common cause of acute pancreatitis (AP) not due to gallstones or alcohol (Mosztbacher et al, Pancreatology 20:608-616, 2020; Yin et al, Pancreas 46:504-509, 2017). Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) has been reported to be effective in reducing serum TG levels which is important in management of HLAP (World J Clin Cases 9:5794-803, 2021). However, studies on TPE are mostly focusing on cases reports, TPE remains poorly evaluated till date and need to be compared with conservative therapy with a well-designed study. METHODS A retrospectively cohort study on HLAP patients between January 2003 and July 2023 was conducted. Factors correlated with efficacy of TPE were included in a propensity model to balance the confounding factors and minimize selection bias. Patients with and without TPE were matched 1:2 based on the propensity score to generate the compared groups. Lipid profiles were detected on admission and consecutive 7 days. The triglyceride (TG) level decline rates, percentage of patients to reach the target TG levels, early recurrence rate, local complications and mortality were compared between groups. RESULTS A total of 504 HLAP patients were identified. Since TPE was scarcely performed on patients with TG < 11.3 mmol/L, 152 patients with TG level 5.65 to 11.3 mmol/L were excluded while 352 with TG ≧11.3 mmol/L were enrolled. After excluding 25 cases with incomplete data or pregnancy, 327 patients, of whom 109 treated without TPE while 218 treated with TPE, were included in data analysis. One-to-two propensity-score matching generated 78 pairs, 194 patients with well-balanced baseline characteristics. Of 194 patients enrolled after matching done, 78 were treated without while 116 with TPE. In the matched cohort (n = 194), patients treated with TPE had a higher TG decline rate in 48 h than those without TPE (70.00% vs 54.00%, P = 0.001); the early recurrence rates were 8.96% vs 1.83%, p = 0.055. If only SAP patients were analyzed, the early recurrence rates were 14.81% vs 0.00% (p = 0.026) respectively. For patients with CT severity index (CTSI) rechecked within 14 days, early CTSI improment rate were 40.90% vs 31.91%. Local complications checked 6 months after discharge were 44.12% vs 38.30%. Mortality was 1.28% vs 1.72%. No differences were found in early stage CTSI improment rate (P = .589), local complications (P = .451) or motality between two groups. CONCLUSIONS TPE reduces TG levels more quickly in 48 h compared with those with conservative treatment, but no difference in the consecutive days. TPE tends to reduce the early recurrence rate comparing with conventional therapy, but TPE has no advantages in improving CTSI in early stage, and no improvement for outcomes including local complications and mortalty.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to produce an alcohol gel hand sanitizer containing green glycerol. Crude glycerol was purified using chemical and physical treatments. The sanitizer was prepared using 71.100 g of 99.3° GL ethanol, 28.0 g H2O, 0.5 g of Carboxypolymethylene [Carbopol 940® or Carbomer], 5 drops of triethanolamine (pH 5-7), and glycerol (1.5% w/w). The thermal behavior of the ethanol, carbopol, triethanolamine, glycerol, and alcohol gels were evaluated using Thermogravimetry and Differential Thermal Analysis. The apparent viscosity was obtained using a rotary viscometer. The determination of in vitro spreadability was achieved by an adaptation of the Knorst method. The ethanol content was measured by headspace gas chromatography using a flame ionization detector. The thermal behavior of the gels was influenced by the presence of glycerol, which confirms the possible network interactions formed. The relative densities of the samples were between 0.887 and 0.890 g/cm3. No alteration of the pH of the formulation resulted from the incorporation of glycerol. The apparent viscosities of the alcohol gels were greater than 20,000 cP. No alteration in the in vitro spreadability of the gel alcohol (530.6 mm2) resulted from the addition of glycerol. Hand sanitizer was produced using glycerol from a transesterification reaction. It represents an alternative use for the glycerol being produced in biodiesel processes. The product satisfied the requirements of WHO that preconize a formulation containing 1.45% glycerol as an humectant to protect skin against dryness and dermatitis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Longitudinal biomarkers in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) may help in monitoring of disease progression and treatment response. The metabolic host response could be a potential source of such biomarkers since it closely associates with the current health status of the patient. OBJECTIVES In this study we performed longitudinal metabolite profiling in patients with CAP for a comprehensive range of metabolites to identify potential host response biomarkers. METHODS Previously collected serum samples from CAP patients with confirmed Streptococcus pneumoniae infection (n = 25) were used. Samples were collected at multiple time points, up to 30 days after admission. A wide range of metabolites was measured, including amines, acylcarnitines, organic acids, and lipids. The associations between metabolites and C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin, CURB disease severity score at admission, and total length of stay were evaluated. RESULTS Distinct longitudinal profiles of metabolite profiles were identified, including cholesteryl esters, diacyl-phosphatidylethanolamine, diacylglycerols, lysophosphatidylcholines, sphingomyelin, and triglycerides. Positive correlations were found between CRP and phosphatidylcholine (34:1) (cor = 0.63) and negative correlations were found for CRP and nine lysophosphocholines (cor = - 0.57 to - 0.74). The CURB disease severity score was negatively associated with six metabolites, including acylcarnitines (tau = - 0.64 to - 0.58). Negative correlations were found between the length of stay and six triglycerides (TGs), especially TGs (60:3) and (58:2) (cor = - 0.63 and - 0.61). CONCLUSION The identified metabolites may provide insight into biological mechanisms underlying disease severity and may be of interest for exploration as potential treatment response monitoring biomarker.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and arterial stiffness in individuals with normoglycaemia remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between the TyG index and arterial stiffness in Japanese individuals with normoglycaemia, providing additional evidence for predicting early arterial stiffness. METHODS This study included 15,453 adults who participated in the NAGALA Physical Examination Project of the Murakami Memorial Hospital in Gifu, Japan, from 2004 to 2015. Data on clinical demographic characteristics and serum biomarker levels were collected. The TyG index was calculated from the logarithmic transformation of fasting triglycerides multiplied by fasting glucose, and arterial stiffness was measured using the estimated pulse wave velocity calculated based on age and mean blood pressure. The association between the TyG index and arterial stiffness was analysed using a logistic regression model. RESULTS The prevalence of arterial stiffness was 3.2% (500/15,453). After adjusting for all covariates, the TyG index was positively associated with arterial stiffness as a continuous variable (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 1.86; 95% Confidence Interval = 1.45-2.39; P<0.001). Using the quartile as the cutoff point, a regression analysis was performed for arterial stiffness when the TyG index was converted into a categorical variable. After adjusting for all covariates, the OR showed an upward trend; the trend test was P<0.001. Subgroup analysis revealed a positive association between the TyG index and arterial stiffness in Japanese individuals with normoglycaemia and different characteristics. CONCLUSION The TyG index in Japanese individuals with normoglycaemia is significantly correlated with arterial stiffness, and the TyG index may be a predictor of early arterial stiffness.

Abstract
Lipids are closely related to the generation of PAHs during food thermal processing. During heating, lipids mainly triglycerides undergo hydrolysis, oxidation and decomposition. The relationship between the various products and the formation of PAHs is still unclear. This paper investigated the effect of different lipid standards on PAH4 production, and explored their thermal stability and reaction products to delve into nature of the differences in PAH4 production. Fatty acids were more prone to generate PAH4 than glycerides. The higher the degree of esterification of glycerides, the higher its thermal stability and the lower the content of PAH4 generated, implying that hydrolysis of glycerides promoted the generation of PAH4. In addition, there was a positive correlation between unsaturation in lipids and the PAH4 production. After heat treatment, hydroperoxides, unsaturated fatty alcohols and aldehydes, alkenes and aromatic substances were abundant in oleic acid and linoleic acid which produced the most PAH4. Thermal decomposition of lipid hydroperoxides was the pathway for the generation of conjugated hydrocarbon radicals, alcohols, aldehydes, and alkenes. The intramolecular cyclization and Diels-Alder reaction acted as ring-forming reactions, with consequent dehydrogenation, decarboxylation, side-chain breaks and radical reorganization, ultimately facilitating the amplification of the aromatic rings and the formation of PAHs.

Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is typically estimated by the Friedewald equation to guide atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) management despite its flaws. Martin-Hopkins and Sampson-NIH equations were shown to outperform Friedewald's in various populations. Our aim was to derive a novel equation for accurate LDL-C estimation in Saudi Arabians and to compare it to Friedewald, Martin-Hopkins and Sampson-NIH equations. This is a cross-sectional study on 2245 subjects who were allocated to 2 cohorts; a derivation (1) and a validation cohort (2). Cohort 1 was analyzed in a multiple regression model to derive an equation (equationD) for estimating LDL-C. The agreement between the measured (LDL-CDM) and calculated levels was tested by Bland-Altman analysis, and the biases by absolute error values. Validation of the derived equation was carried out across LDL-C and triglyceride (TG)-stratified groups. The mean LDL-CDM was 3.10 ± 1.07 and 3.09 ± 1.06 mmol/L in cohorts 1 and 2, respectively. The derived equation is: LDL-CD = 0.224 + (TC × 0.919) - (HDL-C × 0.904) - (TG × 0.236) - (age × 0.001) - 0.024. In cohort 2, the mean LDL-C (mmol/L) was estimated as 3.09 ± 1.06 by equationD, 2.85 ± 1.12 by Friedewald, 2.95 ± 1.09 by Martin-Hopkins, and 2.93 ± 1.11 by Sampson-NIH equations; statistically significant differences between direct and calculated LDL-C was observed with the later three equations (P < 0.001). Bland-Altman analysis showed the lowest bias (0.001 mmol/L) with equationD as compared to 0.24, 0.15, and 0.17 mmol/L with Friedewald, Martin-Hopkins, and Sampson-NIH equations, respectively. The absolute errors in all guideline-stratified LDL-C categories was the lowest with equationD, which also showed the best classifier of LDL-C according to guidelines. Moreover, equationD predicted LDL-C levels with the lowest error with TG levels up to 5.63 mmol/L. EquationD topped the other equations in estimating LDL-C in Saudi Arabians as it could permit better estimation when LDL-C is < 2.4 mmol/L, in familial hyperlipidemia, and in hypertriglyceridemia, which improves cardiovascular outcomes in high-risk patients. We recommend further research to validate equationD in a larger dataset and in other populations.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal that is of great concern in agroecosystems due to its toxicity to plants, herbivores, carnivores, and human beings. The current study evaluated the allocation and bioaccumulation of Cd from soil to cotton plants, cotton plants to herbivore pests, and herbivorous pests to a natural enemy predator. When soil was spiked with 100 mg/kg Cd, results demonstrated that cotton roots accumulated more Cd than the stems and leaves. The bioaccumulation of Cd was less in 4th instar larvae, pupa, and adults of Serangium japonicum than in Bemisia tabaci adults. The bioaccumulation in S. japonicum elongated the immature development period and reduced adult longevity, oviposition days, fertility, and total pre-oviposition duration. The net reproduction of S. japonicum was also reduced, as was female mature weight and feeding potential; as a result, Cd exposure could reduce the future population size compared to uncontaminated populations. There was decreased activity of the antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, and POD) and energy-conserving lipids (glycogen, triglyceride, and total cholesterol) in Cd-contaminated S. japonicum compared to controls. The detoxifying enzyme activity of GST and P450 increased while AChE activity did not change. The qRT-PCR research showed that SOD1, CAT, POD, glycogen, and triglyceride gene expression was higher than in controls, whereas detoxification gene expression did not change. Our results indicate that Cd exposure has a physiological trade-off between its adverse effects on life history traits and elevated detoxification and antioxidation of S. japonicum, which could result from gene expression alteration. Further studies are needed to assess whether Cd exposure causes irreversible DNA damage in S. japonicum.

Abstract
AIM Meat is commonly consumed in India; however, in comparison to Western settings, it is eaten in relatively lower quantities and with minimal processing. The association between meat intake and cardio-metabolic diseases (CMDs) and their risk factors in India is currently uncertain. We examined whether meat intake is associated with risk factors for CMDs and the measures of subclinical atherosclerosis in urbanising villages in southern India. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 6012 adults (52.3% male) participating in the Andhra Pradesh Children and Parents' Study (APCAPS), which is a large prospective, intergenerational cohort study in Southern India that began with the long-term follow-up of the Hyderabad Nutrition Trial (1987-1990). We used cross-sectional data from the third wave of data collection conducted in 2010-2012, where total meat intake was assessed using 100-item, semi-quantitative validated food frequency questionnaires (FFQ). The FFQs were validated using multiple weighed 24 h dietary recalls. The main predictor, 'total meat intake', was calculated as the sum of chicken, red meat, and fish consumption. The risk factors for CMDs [systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), fasting glucose, total cholesterol, homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, and C-reactive protein] and measures of subclinical atherosclerosis [Carotid Intima-Media Thickness, Pulse Wave Velocity, and Augmentation Index] were assessed using standardised clinical procedures. Stratified by gender, the association of meat intake with the risk factors of CMDs and measures of subclinical atherosclerosis was examined using linear multilevel models with random intercept at the household level. RESULTS The mean (SD) age of the male (n = 3128) and female participants (n = 2828) was 34.09 years (15.55) and 34.27 years (12.73), respectively. The median (IQR) intake of meat was 17.79 g/day (8.90, 30.26) in males and 8.90 g/day (4.15, 18.82) in females. In males, a 10 g increase in total meat intake/1000 Kcal/day was positively associated with DBP, BMI, WC, total cholesterol, LDL-C, and triglycerides, whereas in females, a 10 g increase in total meat intake/1000 Kcal/day was positively associated with SBP, DBP, fasting glucose, HOMA-IR, total cholesterol, LDL-C, and triglycerides. There was no relationship between meat consumption and measures of subclinical atherosclerosis. CONCLUSIONS Meat intake had a linear positive association with CMD risk factors among the relatively younger Indian population who were consuming meat at lower levels compared to their European counterparts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Hypertriglyceridemia (HT) may increase the risk of stroke. Limited studies have shown that stroke severity and infarction size are smaller in patients with HT. We explored the relationship between triglyceride levels and stroke risk factors, severity and outcome in a large prospective database. DESIGN Prospective Cross-sectional study. SETTING We retrospectively interrogated the Qatar Stroke Database in all patients admitted between 2014-2022 with acute ischemic stroke and evaluated the relationship between triglyceride, diabetes, stroke severity (measured on NIHSS), stroke type (TOAST classification) and the short- (mRS at 90 days) and long-term outcomes (MACE at 1 year) in patients with HT. PARTICIPANTS Six thousand five hundred fifty-eight patients ≥20 years were included in this study RESULTS: Six thousand five hundred fifty-eight patients with ischemic stroke [mean age 54.6 ± 12. 9; male 82.1%) were included. Triglyceride levels upon admission were low-normal (≤1.1 mmol/L) in 2019 patients, high-normal (1.2-1.7 mmol/L) in 2142 patients, borderline-high (1.8-2.2 mmol/L) in 1072 patients and high (≥2.3 mmol/L) in 1325 patients. Higher triglyceride levels were associated with stroke and increased likelihood of having diabetes, obesity, active smoking, and small vessel/lacunar stroke type. An inverse relationship was noted whereby higher triglyceride levels were associated with lower stroke severity and reduced likelihood of poorer outcome (mRS 3-6) at discharge and 90 days. Long-term MACE events were less frequent in patients with higher triglyceride levels. After adjusting age, gender, diabetes, prior stroke, CAD, and obesity, multivariate analysis showed that hypertension and triglyceride levels were higher in mild ischemic strokes patients. CONCLUSIONS Increasing triglycerides are associated with higher risk of small vessel disease and requires further prospective cohort studies for confirmation.
