Abstract
A three-dimensional model was constructed from helical CT images for abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) and thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA). A stent-graft was designed and positioned endoluminally on the computer. One hundred and nine stent-grafts for 101 patients were designed by this method and deployed well in all patients. The design time was reduced from 4 to 0.5 hr.

Abstract
This article describes pitfalls in the interpretation of multidetector-row helical CT (MDCT) images at the window width and level settings for lung parenchyma. On MDCT, linear artifacts, which look like black and white linear densities and are called "hurricane artifacts," radiate out from objects that have very different densities from their neighbors. For the evaluation of fine parenchymal details, a low table speed/slice collimation should be used. In fact, axial (step and shoot) scanning may be more effective for the evaluation of fine details. Since artifacts from vessels highly enhanced by contrast medium cause data blackout in the surrounding areas at high table speed/slice collimation, pulmonary parenchyma in such situations should be evaluated with unenhanced CT. Although multidetector-row helical CT is a promising tool for the evaluation of lung parenchyma, it is important to identify its shortcomings due to artifacts when interpreting images at the window width and level settings for lung parenchyma and to apply the appropriate methods for eliminating such artifacts.

Abstract
AIMS This study was designed to determine, using electron-beam CT, whether there are morphological abnormalities in patients with the Brugada syndrome and to elucidate the relationship between those abnormalities and arrhythmogenesis. METHODS AND RESULTS Twenty-six consecutive patients with the Brugada syndrome and 23 age- and gender-matched control subjects (controls) were evaluated for morphological abnormalities using electron beam CT. Electron beam CT demonstrated morphological abnormalities of the right ventricle in 21 (81%) of 26 patients, but in only two (9%) of 23 controls. The sites of morphological abnormalities were the right ventricular outflow tract area in 17 patients and the inferior wall of the right ventricle in four patients. Of the seven patients with monoform premature ventricular contractions recorded only in the acute phase, four of the five patients with premature ventricular contractions from the right ventricular outflow tract area had morphological abnormalities in the right ventricular outflow tract area, and the other two patients with premature ventricular contractions from the inferior wall of the right ventricle had morphological abnormalities in the inferior wall of the right ventricle. CONCLUSION The sites of morphological abnormalities detected by electron beam CT in patients with the Brugada syndrome were related to the origins of premature ventricular contractions recorded only in the acute phase, which may trigger ventricular fibrillation. These morphological abnormalities may be related to arrhythmogenic substrates in patients with the Brugada syndrome.

Abstract
Epithelial cells are the initial sites of host invasion by group A Streptococcus pyogenes (GAS), and their infection of epithelial cells has been suggested to induce apoptosis. However, the mechanism responsible for bacteria-host interaction and the induction of apoptosis has not been clearly understood. We demonstrate here that human pharyngeal epithelial HEp-2 cells became apoptotic with DNA fragmentation by invasion of GAS strains JRS4 (M6+, F1+) and JRS145 (M6-, F1+ mutant of JRS4), whereas apoptotic cellular changes were not observed in SAM1 (M6+, F1- mutant) or SAM2 (M6-, F1- mutant) infected HEp-2 cells. Confocal microscopy revealed that Bax translocation to mitochondria and cytochrome c release occurred after 4 h of infection. Western blot analyses showed that the amounts of Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL were decreased in the mitochondria of infected cells. In addition, we demonstrated that the release of nuclear histone from infected cells was prevented by the addition of caspase-9 inhibitor (Ac-LEHD-CHO). We conclude that the internalization of GAS in epithelial cells is necessary and sufficient for the induction of apoptosis, which is initiated by mitochondrial dysfunction, and the mechanism of GAS-induced apoptosis is clearly different from that induced by other intracellular invasive bacteria, e.g. Shigella and Salmonella species.

Abstract
Developing seeds of the kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) contain several isoforms of starch branching enzymes. Two of them, KBE1 and KBE2, which are the major forms in the premature seeds, were purified as a single band of protein on SDS-PAGE and native PAGE by chromatographies on DEAE-Sepharose, Bio-Gel P-200, and amylose-binding Sepharose 6B. The enzymes had similar pH optimum (7.0), pH stability (7.0-9.5), temperature optimum (25-30 degrees C), and temperature stability (up to 40 degrees C). Additionally, both were inhibited by various divalent metal ions and activated by citrate. Finally, though their N-terminal amino acid sequences were identical, their molecular masses and affinities for amylose differed; 80 kDa and 1.27 mM for KBE1 and 77 kDa and 0.74 mM for KBE2.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Recently, intraductal papillary-mucinous tumor (IPMT) of the pancreas has increasingly been recognized. However, differential diagnosis between benign and malignant IPMT is often difficult using conventional imaging modalities. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively investigate the value of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) for differentiating malignant from benign IPMT. METHODS A total of 51 patients with IPMT were preoperatively examined by EUS. The endosonograhic findings were compared with histopathological findings of the resected specimens. RESULTS In main duct type IPMT, the diameter of the main pancreatic duct (MPD) was > or =10 mm in seven of the eight malignant tumors, compared with two of the seven benign tumors (p < 0.05). In branch duct type IPMT, three of the four large tumors (>40 mm) with irregular thick septa were malignant lesions. In both main duct type IPMT and branch duct IPMT, eight patients had large mural nodules (>10 mm); seven of the eight tumors were malignant and one of the eight tumors was benign. When the tumor was diagnosed as malignant according to above three findings, EUS was able to differentiate between malignant and benign IPMT with an accuracy of 86%. CONCLUSIONS Main duct type tumors with > or =10 mm dilated MPD, branch duct type tumors (>40 mm) with irregular septa, and large mural nodules (>10 mm) strongly suggest malignancy on EUS. EUS would be a useful modality for differentiating between benign and malignant IPMT.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this work was to evaluate the CT features of thymoma and to determine the most helpful findings in differentiating invasive from noninvasive thymoma. METHOD The CT scans from 27 patients with invasive thymoma and 23 with noninvasive thymoma were independently assessed by two observers without knowledge of their invasiveness. The presence and distribution of various CT findings were independently analyzed. RESULTS Invasive thymomas were more likely to have lobulated (16/27, 59%) or irregular (6/27, 22%) contours than noninvasive thymomas (8/23, 35% and 1.5/23, 6%, respectively) (p < 0.05). Invasive thymomas had a higher prevalence of low attenuation areas within the tumor (16/27, 60%) than noninvasive thymomas (5/23, 22%) (p < 0.001) as well as foci of calcification (14.5/27, 54% vs. 6/23, 26%; p < 0.01). CONCLUSION The presence of lobulated or irregular contour, areas of low attenuation, and multifocal calcification is suggestive of invasive thymoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Optical coherence tomography(OCT) permits the noninvasive analysis of cross-sectional tomograms of ocular tissue in vivo. CASE A 67-year-old woman presented with abnormal feeling in the left eye. An ophthalmoscopic examination revealed retinal edema in the macular vascular arcades and radial folds on the fovea. Optic disc pits were not demonstrated ophthalmoscopically or by fluorescein angiography(FAG). OCT disclosed separations in the inner and outer layers of the edematous retina, retinal detachment on the fovea, and cystic schisis(pseudo-pits) beneath the inner limiting membrane of the disc which seemed to be connected with the separation of the inner layers of the retina. CONCLUSION OCT demonstrated cystic schisis-like pits(pseudo-pits) which were not recognized ophthalmoscopically or by FAG, and the cystic schisis seemed to communicate with the inner separation of the retina. Therefore, we prefer to call such cases pseudo-disc-pits macular syndrome instead of optic disc pit macular syndrome.

Abstract
Lys-gingipain (KGP), a lysine-specific cysteine proteinase, is one of the major virulence factors of Porphyromonas gingivalis. Here we examined the involvement of the catalytic domain of KGP (KGP(cd)) in hemoglobin binding by P. gingivalis, using a specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) elicited by the administration of plasmid DNA encoding KGP(cd) or the catalytic domain of Arg-gingipain (RGP(cd)). The pSeq2A/kgp(cd) and pSeq2B/rgp(cd) plasmids were constructed by the ligation of kgp(cd) and rgp(cd) DNA fragments, respectively. Female BALB/c mice were immunized with each of these plasmids. pSeq2A/kgp(cd) elicited a strong response to recombinant KGP(cd) (rKGP(cd)), as well as to comparably produced rRGP(cd)-reactive antibodies. The serum antibodies elicited by pSecTag2B/rgp(cd) also cross-reacted with rKGP(cd) as well as rRGP(cd). Anti-KGP(cd) IgG significantly inhibited hemoglobin binding by P. gingivalis. Furthermore, the inhibition of hemoglobin binding was markedly enhanced by a combination of anti-KGP(cd) and anti-fimbriae. Anti-RGP(cd) IgG showed a negligible inhibitory effect, while both anti-KGP(cd) and anti-RGP(cd) IgGs showed significant inhibitory effects on Lys- and Arg-specific proteolytic activities and on the growth of P. gingivalis under iron-restricted conditions where supplemented hemoglobin was the sole iron source. Immunized mice were challenged by intraperitoneal inoculation with P. gingivalis. All nonimmunized mice died within 72 h; however, vaccination with pSeq2A/kgp(cd) and pSeq2B/rgp(cd) prevented inflammatory responses and prolonged the survival rate of immunized mice by 43 and 27%, respectively. These results suggest that KGP(cd) acts as a hemoglobin-binding protein and can also be useful as an immunogen inducing a protective response to P. gingivalis infection.

Abstract
We report here two patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who experienced implanted metastases in the abdominal cavity after hepatectomy or microwave coagulo-necrotic therapy. Hepatic resection and microwave coagulo-necrotic therapy were successful for these tumors, and the postoperative status was satisfactory in both patients. Implanted metastases were discovered in the abdominal cavity of each of these two patients 6 months after surgery. It is necessary to look not only for the presence of liver metastasis but also for the recurrence of the tumor in the abdominal cavity during the follow-up period. Generally, surgical resection for intraabdominal implanted tumors arising from any other abdominal organs is not indicated for improving the patient's quality of life. However, resection of metastatic tumors that occur in the abdominal cavity, arising from hepatocellular carcinoma may be of value in improving patient survival.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to describe the pulmonary abnormalities on high-resolution computed tomography (CT) in patients with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD). The study included 41 patients who met the diagnostic criteria for MCTD and showed abnormal findings on high-resolution CT. The presence, extent, and distribution of various high-resolution CT findings were evaluated. The predominant abnormalities included areas of ground-glass attenuation (n = 41), subpleural micronodules (n = 40), and nonseptal linear opacities (n = 32). Other common findings included peripheral predominance (n = 40), lower lobe predominance (n = 39), intralobular reticular opacities (n = 25), architectural distortion (n = 20), and traction bronchiectasis (n = 18). Less common findings included honeycombing, ill-defined centrilobular nodules, airspace consolidation, interlobular septal thickening, thickening of bronchovascular bundles, bronchial wall thickening, bronchiectasis, and emphysema. Pulmonary involvement of MCTD is characterized by the presence of ground-glass attenuation, nonseptal linear opacities, and peripheral and lower lobe predominance. Ill-defined centrilobular opacities were uncommonly seen.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recently OPCAB has become more and more common in CABG, although one problem of OPCAB like the quality of anastomosis has not been solved yet. We discussed the usefulness of intra-operative angiography during OPCAB. METHODS During March 1997-July 2000, 55 patients underwent OPCAB (including 35 MIDCAB cases) in our institute. Graft flow and anastomosis were examined by intra-operative or immediate post-operative angiography. RESULTS Immediate postoperative angiography was performed in 22 MIDCAB cases. In 15 cases an excellent graft flow without stenosis could be confirmed, in 7 cases the native LAD was so small, which caused a poor flow of the LITA and three cases needed additional PTCA because of anastomosis stenosis. Intra-operative angiography was done in 9 MIDCAB and 17 OPCAB. As a result, re-anastomosis was performed in one case of MIDCAB because of severe anastomosis stenosis, one case of OPCAB had confirmed poor flow because of a small LAD, but in 24 cases an excellent graft flow could be seen on time. In 2 cases OPCAB was combined with PTCA to achieve complete revascularization. CONCLUSIONS Intra-operative angiography is a useful strategy to confirm the surgical results quickly in OPCAB (included MIDCAB). Using such a strategy, combination of OPCAB and PTCA as a new approach for complete revascularization can be performed safe and smooth.

Abstract
Periodontopathogenic bacteria survive various environmental changes during the progression of periodontal disease. Alterations in metabolism and protein expression will have to take place to adapt their physiological functions to environmental stress. We examined the effects of an elevation of 2 degrees C in temperature on the adhesive ability and antigenicity of Porphyromonas gingivalis. Elevation of growth temperature of P. gingivalis from 37 degrees C to 39 degrees C remarkably suppressed the expression of surface filamentous structures, such as fimbriae, as well as the adhesive capacities to salivary components and Streptococcus oralis. Sera of severe periodontitis patients revealed a marked increase in serological activity with 39 degrees C cells than with 37 degrees C cells. The alteration of protein profiles of bacterial surface components by temperature elevation was demonstrated by SDS-PAGE, and their Western blot profiles were also different from those of cells grown at 37 degrees C. Although a uniform trend was not found in the altered patterns, sera from severe periodontitis patients detected more antigenic proteins in cells grown at 39 degrees C than 37 degrees C cells. These observations suggest that P. gingivalis downregulates the expression of fimbriae and alters its adhesive capacity and antigenicity by the temperature stress that could occur during the disease progression.

Abstract
Cadherin-related neuronal receptor (CNR) family proteins are known as synaptic cadherins and Reelin receptors. Here we have identified two novel mouse CNR genes, CNRc1 and CNRc2, orthologues of human protocadherin (Pcdh) alpha-c1 and Pcdhalpha-c2, respectively. While the variable large exons of CNRc1 and c2 contain six conserved extracellular cadherin repeats (EC1-6) and are linked to the constant exons, both contain several molecular features distinct from CNR1-8. CNRc1 and c2 lack the Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) sequence that is conserved in the EC1 of CNR1-8, which is necessary for binding to Reelin. The present studies confirm that CNRc1 and c2 failed to immunoprecipitate with Reelin. In addition, the regulation of novel CNR expression patterns during brain development is slightly different from that of CNR1. The identification of these new CNR genes characterized by their distinct extracellular function and expression is indicative of the novel diversity of the processes of brain structuring and synapse regulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS Recently, it was reported that focal submucosal invasive colorectal cancer could be treated by polypectomy or endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) because of the rarity of lymph-node metastasis. Our objective was to examine the accuracy and efficacy of a 15-MHz ultrasound miniprobe in the preoperative evaluation of the degree of submucosal invasion in colorectal cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 35 patients with submucosal invasive colorectal cancer who underwent ultrasonography with a miniprobe were studied prospectively. The results of this imaging were compared with the histologic findings in resected specimens. RESULTS Although the accuracy of the miniprobe in categorizing submucosal invasion into three subclasses (SM1, invasion limited to the upper third; SM2, limited to the middle third; SM3, limited to the lower third) was low (37.1%; 13/35), the accuracy in differentiation between < or = SMI (M and SMI) and > or = SM2 (SM2, SM3, MP, and S) was 85.7 % (30/35). CONCLUSIONS The miniprobe can be useful for therapeutic decision-making in submucosal invasive colorectal cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Down's syndrome (DS) patients often develop severe early-onset marginal periodontitis in early adulthood; however, there is little information available on the microbiology of DS periodontitis. METHODS Subgingival plaque specimens were taken from 67 DS young adults and 41 age-matched systemically healthy individuals with mental disabilities (MD). The prevalence of 10 possible periodontopathic bacterial species, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Bacteroides forsythus, Treponema denticola, Prevotella intermedia, Prevotella nigrescens, Capnocytophaga ochracea, Capnocytophaga sputigena, Campylobacter rectus, and Eikenella corrodens, were investigated in their subgingival plaque samples using a polymerase chain reaction method. The detection of P. gingivalis fimA genotypes was also performed in P. gingivalis-positive samples. RESULTS Although DS subjects generally develop an earlier and more extensive periodontal breakdown than those with MD, no significant differences were observed in the bacterial profiles. The profiles of subjects with periodontitis were significant in DS, but not in MD. The prevalence of P. gingivalis, B. forsythus, and P. intermedia were significant in the DS periodontitis group, compared to DS gingivitis group. Moreover, the occurrence of P. gingivalis with the type II fimA gene was significantly related to periodontitis in both DS and MD, with odds ratios of 6.32 and 12.03, respectively. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that early-onset periodontitis in DS is mainly due to the more susceptible host for the causative microbial agents including P. gingivalis with type II fimA.

Abstract
To avoid the haemorrhagic risk of unnecessary thrombolysis in acute myocardial infarction (MI), early and precise diagnosis of spontaneous recanalization (SR) of the infarct-related artery is required. To clarify the accuracy of technetium-99m tetrofosmin myocardial single-photon emission tomography (SPET) in the detection of SR in patients with acute anterior MI, electrocardiography (ECG), echocardiography and 99mTc-tetrofosmin SPET imaging were performed in 49 patients with acute anterior MI before emergency coronary angiography. Defect score was calculated as the sum of the perfusion defects of each segment: from 3 (complete defect) to 0 (normal perfusion). Echocardiographic asynergic score (the sum of asynergic grades) and the greatest ST elevation of the 12-lead ECG on admission were also measured. SR was defined as Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) grade 3 flow on emergency coronary angiography. Defect score in 11 patients with SR (9.2 +/- 3.7) was significantly lower than that in 38 patients without SR (18.5 +/- 5.0) (P < 0.001), whereas there were no significant differences in asynergic score and ST elevation between the two groups. From the receiver operating characteristic curves, the optimal cut-off points of defect score, asynergic score and ST elevation for the detection of SR were calculated to be 12, 13 and 3.5, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity of the scintigraphic defect score (91% and 89%) were significantly higher than those of the asynergic score (64% and 68%) and ST elevation (73% and 71%). Thus, 99mTc-tetrofosmin SPET imaging on admission is a very accurate method for the detection of SR in patients with acute anterior MI.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the suitability of fibronectin-binding protein FBP54 as a putative vaccine for Streptococcus pyogenes infections. When the distribution of the fbp54 gene among the clinical isolates representing various M serotypes was tested by PCR and Southern blot assays, it was found that all of the strains possess this gene. Furthermore, a significant increase in immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody titers against FBP54 was observed in sera from patients with S. pyogenes infections compared with those from healthy volunteers (P < 0.005). Mice were immunized with FBP54 subcutaneously, orally, or nasally. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay revealed that antigen-specific IgG antibodies were induced in the sera of immunized mice, while high salivary levels of IgA antibodies were detected after oral and nasal immunizations. Mice subcutaneously or orally immunized with FBP54 survived significantly longer following the challenge with S. pyogenes than did nonimmunized mice (P < 0.001). These results indicate that FBP54 is a promising vaccine for the prevention of S. pyogenes infections.

Abstract
The distribution of the serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptor in glial cells in the white matter of rat spinal cord was immunohistochemically examined with specific antibodies against the 5-HT2A receptor. 5-HT2A receptor-like immunoreactivity was detected in astrocytes that were identified by an antibody against the glial fibrillary acidic protein. In contrast, 5-HT2A receptor-like immunoreactivity was not observed in oligodendrocytes.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this work was to compare the thin-section CT findings of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) with those of acute interstitial pneumonia (AIP). METHOD The thin-section CT scans from 25 patients with ARDS and 25 with AIP were independently assessed by two observers without knowledge of clinical and pathologic data. The presence, extent, and distribution of various CT findings were independently analyzed. RESULTS Honeycombing was seen more frequently in lobes of patients with AIP (26%) than in lobes with ARDS (8%) (p < 0.001). Compared with patients with ARDS, a greater number of patients with AIP had a predominantly lower lung zone distribution (p < 0.05) and a symmetric distribution (p < 0.05) of the parenchymal abnormalities. CONCLUSION Patients with AIP have a greater prevalence of honeycombing and are more likely to have a symmetric bilateral distribution and a lower lung zone predominance than patients with ARDS. However, significant overlap exists among the CT findings.

Abstract
To examine whether micronucleus tests can be incorporated into general toxicology assays, we performed micronucleus tests applying the treatment protocols typically used in such assays. In this 13th Collaborative Study of the CSGMT, both rats and mice were tested, although rats were used in the majority of the studies. Fifteen mutagens were tested in rats, mainly by oral (p.o.) administration. Micronucleus induction was evaluated 2, 3, and 4 days, and 1, 2, 3, and 28 days after the beginning of the treatment in the peripheral blood, and at 28 days in the bone marrow. Of the 15 chemicals that induced micronuclei in rats in short-term assays, two chemicals (1,2-dimethylhydrazine.2HCl and mitomycin C) were negative in all our experiments, possibly because of insufficient dose levels. The remaining 13 were positive within the estimated dose range of a general toxicology assay, suggesting the possibility of integrating the micronucleus assay into general toxicology assays. Three patterns were observed in micronucleus induction during the period of repeated treatment: (1) gradual increases in micronucleus frequency with sequential doses, (2) a peak at 3-5 days followed by gradual decreases in micronucleus frequency with sequential doses, and (3) a rapid increase in micronucleus frequency followed by a plateau. We evaluated factors that might have been involved in those patterns, such as the spleen function, target organ exposure, extramedullary hematopoiesis, hypothermia, and hypoxia. Another factor we considered was dosage. Because the dosages employed in a general toxicity assay are usually lower than those used in short-term micronucleus assays, this discrepancy was considered the greatest potential problem for integrating the micronucleus assay into general toxicology assays. Our results indicate that the integration of the micronucleus assay into a 28-day toxicological assay is feasible. To serve this purpose, blood samples collected 4 days after the beginning of treatment and blood and bone marrow samples collected at autopsy should be examined. Furthermore, although it is recognized that mice may be suitable for performing independent micronucleus assays, we propose that rats can provide biologically important and relevant information regarding potential chemical mutagens that can be evaluated under conditions used in the conduct of general toxicology studies.

Abstract
The conversion from mitosis to meiosis is a phenomenon specific to the cellular progenitors of gametes; however, the mechanism or mechanisms responsible for this conversion are poorly understood. To this end, some morphological and molecular changes that occur during the initiation of meiosis in newt spermatogenesis are reported in the present paper. In situ morphologic studies revealed that spermatogonial stages comprise two phases: early mitotic generations (G1-G4) and late mitotic generations (G5-G8). Morphologic conversion from secondary spermatogonia to primary spermatocytes occurred during the intermediate stage of premeiotic DNA replication. The expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), a DNA polymerase-delta auxiliary protein, in spermatogonia was weak in G1, highest during DNA synthesis (S), decreased in G2 and was not detectable in dividing cells. Complementary DNA for newt homologs of DMC1 (disrupted meiotic cDNA), which is an Escherichia coli RecA-like protein specifically active during meiosis, were isolated. The newt Dmc1 mRNA was first expressed significantly during the preleptotene stage and this continued into the spermatid stage. These observations present a basis for investigating the mechanism(s) controlling the conversion of newt spermatogonial cells from mitosis to meiosis.

Abstract
A respiratory gating technique was developed to allow computed tomography-guided needle biopsy of small pulmonary nodules. Twenty-three pulmonary nodules less than 15 mm in diameter underwent biopsy with the use of this technique. There were 14 true-positive, eight true-negative, and one false-negative result (diagnostic accuracy, 96%). The diagnostic accuracy for small nodules without this technique in a historical control was 69% (P: <.05).

Abstract
The present study was carried out to clarify possible modulation mechanism of serotonin (5-HT) on glutamatergic neurotransmission in the rat cerebral cortex. 5-HT was depleted by a 5-HT metabolite blocker (para-chlorophenylalanine; pCPA) for a week. Receptor binding experiments using (S)-[(3)H]alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methylisoxazol-4-propionic acid (AMPA) showed a considerable increase in B(max) value of the membrane samples prepared from the cerebral cortex of rats compared with that of control animals received saline. In contrast, B(max) value of the [(3)H]MK-801 binding experiments for NMDA receptor was not changed by pCPA-treatment. Changes in the density of each AMPA receptor subtype were examined in the cerebral cortex by immunoblot analyses using antibodies against AMPA receptor subunits. The density of immunoreactive bands with receptor subtype specific antibodies against GluR2/3 and GluR2 receptors was increased, whereas that of GluR1 receptors was decreased. Considering GluR2 receptor subtype inhibits Ca(2+) influx into neurons, the present study suggests that 5-HT appears to modulate synaptic plasticity by regulating the density of each AMPA receptor subtype.

Abstract
Reproducible and quantitative evaluation of patient satisfaction with their complete dentures is of great importance for preoperative diagnosis, treatment planning and assessment of complete denture treatment outcome. This study attempted (1) to clarify the degree of contribution of various factors to overall satisfaction, and (2) to develop a method for quantitative assessment of overall satisfaction with complete dentures. Twelve satisfaction factors and a three-grade scale were used to assess 302 complete denture patients. The contribution of each grade of the 12 factors to the overall satisfaction level was determined by multiple regression analysis. Seven factors were highly correlated to the overall satisfaction. Based on the level of contribution by these seven significant factors, a scoring method for satisfaction was established. Category scores for these factors were calculated and the sum of the category scores was converted to an integer between 0 and 100. The resulting quantification score was closely correlated with overall satisfaction. A protocol for scoring overall satisfaction was developed based on the scientifically analysed contribution of each satisfaction factor.

Abstract
The cariostatic effect of oolong tea polyphenols administered according to several regimens was examined in specific pathogen-free (SPF) Sprague-Dawley rats given both a diet containing 20% sucrose and infected with S. sobrinus 6715. The crude preparation (OTE) of oolong tea polyphenols showed the most prominent effect on caries reduction in SPF rats when OTE was administered in the drinking water beginning 1 day prior to the inoculation of S. sobrinus 6715, when compared with chromatographically isolated polyphenol fractions (OTF1 and OTF6) of OTE. Reduction in caries development was found even when OTE was given 1 day after inoculation of the organism. OTE was shown to significantly inhibit dental caries in rats at the concentrations of either more than 5 microg/ml in drinking water or more than 10 microg/g in diet. OTF1 and OTF6 also showed significant inhibition of caries induction, with the minimum inhibitory concentration of OTF6 being 50 microg/ml in drinking water and the minimum inhibitory concentration of OTF1 being 100 microg/g in diet. These results indicate that cariostatic activity of OTE was effective even after the establishment of S. sobrinus in the oral cavity and was more effective in drinking water than in diet. Furthermore, OTE may contain some anticaries substances that affect the virulence of S. sobrinus other than glucosyltransferases.

Abstract
The vegetative growth of Arabidopsis thaliana can be divided into two phases. The transition from the juvenile (early) phase to the adult (later) phase is associated with changes in several morphological features of leaves, such as the shape of leaf blades, the number of trichomes and patterns of venation. In a screening of mutants with altered morphological identities of leaves, we found one which we named juvenile leafless and misshapen shoot apical meristem (jam). The mutation represented a new allele of the WUSCHEL (WUS) gene, and, in its presence, plants produced no juvenile leaves. Analysis of the morphology of mutant plants revealed that all the rosette leaves had characteristics of adult leaves. The formation of the first rosette leaf in the wus(jam) mutant was markedly delayed, and occurred at the almost same time as formation of the third or fourth leaf in wild-type plants. In the wild-type, these leaves correspond to the first adult leaves. Analysis by RT-PCR showed that transcripts of WUS accumulated in shoot apices and roots, but not in cotyledons and leaves. The present results suggest that the WUS gene controls the morphological traits of rosette leaves either directly or indirectly. In view of the predicted function of the WUS gene, namely maintenance of stem cells within the shoot apical meristem, we suggest that the lack of juvenile leaves in the mutant might have been caused by interruption of leaf initiation during the juvenile phase or by halting of an entire process of formation of juvenile leaves.

Abstract
PURPOSE In the early stages, clinical and chest radiographic findings of acute interstitial pneumonia (AIP) are often similar to those of bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP). However, patients with AIP have a poor prognosis, while those with BOOP can achieve a complete recovery after corticosteroid therapy. The objective of this study was to identify differences in high-resolution CT (HRCT) findings between the two diseases. METHODS The study included 27 patients with AIP and 14 with BOOP who were histologically diagnosed [open-lung biopsy (n=7), autopsy (n=17), transbronchial lung biopsy (n=17)]. The frequency and distribution of various HRCT findings for each disease were retrospectively evaluated. RESULTS Traction bronchiectasis, interlobular septal thickening, and intralobular reticular opacities were significantly more prevalent in AIP (92.6%, 85.2%, and 59.3%, respectively) than in BOOP (42.9%, 35.7%, and 14.3%, respectively) (p<0.01). Parenchymal nodules and peripheral distribution were more prevalent in BOOP (28.6% and 57.1%, respectively) than in AIP (7.4% and 14.8%, respectively) (p<0.01). Areas with ground-glass attenuation, air-space consolidation, and architectural distortion were common in both AIP and BOOP. CONCLUSION For a differential diagnosis of AIP and BOOP, special attention should be given to the following HRCT findings: traction bronchiectasis, interlobular septal thickening, intralobular reticular opacities, parenchymal nodules, pleural effusion, and peripheral zone predominance.

Abstract
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES To investigate whether expiratory high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) is more useful than inspiratory HRCT for the detection of early-phase diffuse alveolar damage. METHODS Eleven anesthetized rabbits were scanned with both inspiratory and expiratory HRCT every 30 minutes during mechanical ventilation. Ten rabbits were killed after the detection of pulmonary abnormalities on both inspiratory and expiratory HRCT. The remaining rabbit was killed when the pulmonary abnormalities appeared only on expiratory HRCT. RESULTS In four cases (36%), the abnormal findings were detected earlier on expiratory HRCT than on inspiratory HRCT. In seven cases (64%), the abnormalities appeared simultaneously on inspiratory and expiratory HRCT. In all 11 cases, the histopathological changes of areas with abnormal CT findings corresponded to the exudative or proliferative phase of diffuse alveolar damage. CONCLUSIONS Expiratory HRCT has the potential to detect the abnormalities of diffuse alveolar damage earlier than inspiratory HRCT.

Abstract
Porphyromonas gingivalis fimA gene encoding fimbrillin, a subunit of fimbriae, has been classified into 5 genotypes (types I to V) based on their nucleotide sequences. Here, we investigated the relationship between the prevalence of these fimA genotypes and periodontal health status in adults. Dental plaque specimens obtained from 380 periodontally healthy adults and 139 periodontitis patients were analyzed by the PCR method. P. gingivalis was detected in 36.8% of the healthy subjects and in 87.1% of the periodontitis patients. Among the P. gingivalis-positive healthy adults, the most prevalent fimA type was type I (76.1%), followed by type V. In contrast, a majority of the periodontitis patients carried type II fimA organisms (66.1%), followed by type IV. The univariate analysis illustrated that periodontitis was associated with the occurrences of type I fimA (OR 0.16), type II (OR 44.44), type III (1.96), type IV (13.87), and type V (1.40). These findings clearly indicate that there are both disease-associated and non-disease-associated strains of P. gingivalis, and that their infectious traits influencing periodontal health status could be differentiated based on the clonal variation of fimA genes.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to assess the evolution of various computed tomographic (CT) findings of lymphocytic interstitial pneumonia (LIP) with determination of potentially reversible or irreversible features. The study included 14 patients with biopsy-proved LIP who had serial thin-section CT examination 4 to 82 months (median 13 months) apart. Initial and follow-up CT scans were evaluated independently and then directly compared with each other by two observers. The main parenchymal abnormalities on the initial CT scan consisted of ground-glass attenuation (n = 14), thickening of interlobular septa (n = 13), centrilobular nodules (n = 12), cystic airspaces (n = 10), and airspace consolidation (n = 4). On follow-up CT, nine patients improved, one showed no change, and four showed increased extent of disease. With the exception of cysts, the parenchymal opacities were reversible. On follow-up CT, new cysts were seen in three patients; these developed mainly in areas with centrilobular nodules on initial CT. Honeycombing was seen on follow-up CT in four patients; in three patients it developed in areas of airspace consolidation and in one patient it developed in an area with ground-glass attenuation on initial CT. The majority of patients with LIP improved on follow-up. However, airspace consolidation may progress to honeycombing and centrilobular nodules may precede cystic formation.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to survey the usefulness of high-resolution CT (HRCT) for the evaluation of activity in acute and subacute non-infectious diffuse infiltrative lung diseases before and after corticosteroid treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS Sequential HRCT images and chest radiographs obtained before and after treatment were retrospectively evaluated in 33 patients with acute or subacute noninfectious diffuse infiltrative lung diseases. All these patients were histologically confirmed to have pulmonary Inflammation and to have responded to treatment with corticosteroid. Radiographic and CT scores were correlated with the degree of dyspnea and the results of arterial blood gas analysis using Spearman's rank-correlation coefficient. RESULTS On follow-up HRCT, the profusion score of areas with increased attenuation was significantly correlated with arterial oxygen tension (PaO2) (p=.003, r=-.53) and the alveolar-arterial oxygen tension difference (AaDO2) (p=.001, r=.57). No other correlation was found after treatment. Nodular and linear opacities were more commonly seen on follow-up chest radiographs and HRCT images than on initial ones. CONCLUSION HRCT is useful for the evaluation of disease activity in acute and subacute noninfectious infiltrative lung diseases before and after treatment if paying special attention to the profusion of ground-glass attenuation. Even if pretreatment HRCT has not been performed, posttreatment HRCT should be examined.

Abstract
We report a rare case of endoscopic removal of colonic pedunculated leiomyoma with an aid of endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS). A 46-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with complaints of lower abdominal pain and alternating constipation and diarrhea. Colonoscopy revealed a small pedunculated polyp in the transverse colon covered with almost normal mucosa. EUS showed a hypoechoic solid tumor with clear margins and smooth contour in the second to third layer. We considered this lesion as a submucosal tumor of the colon with no continuity to the muscularis propria. We performed endoscopic removal of this tumor successfully, and histological diagnosis was a leiomyoma. Endoscopic removal of colonic pedunculated leiomyoma is rare. Moreover, in our case, EUS showed typical findings of colonic leiomyoma and was useful to assess the location of the submucosal tumor. We describe herein our experience and discuss similar cases reported in the English literature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little information is available on the colonization of periodontopathic bacteria and alveolar bone loss in a mouse system, because of the difficulty in establishing bacteria in the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to establish experimental periodontitis in mice by applying a Porphyromonas gingivalis-adhered ligature onto the molars. METHODS Specific pathogen-free C3H/HeN mice were divided into 3 groups: 80 infected, 80 sham-infected, and 48 non-treated control mice. Sterile silk ligatures were preincubated with and without P. gingivalis 381 in vitro and then physically tied on the right maxillary first molar of infected and sham-infected mice, respectively. Ten mice from the infected and sham-infected groups and 6 from the control group were sacrificed at 2-week intervals for up to 15 weeks after infection. RESULTS Plaque samples were collected at the time of sacrifice and alveolar bone loss was examined. The results indicated that P. gingivalis was recovered from the plaque samples in 95% of the infected mice after 1 week and then gradually dropped to 58% after 15 weeks of infection, whereas P. gingivalis was not isolated in either sham-infected or control mice throughout the experimental period. The infected mice showed significant P. gingivalis-induced bone loss at the sites where the ligature was tied weeks 13 to 15. A linear regression analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between the number of P. gingivalis recovered and alveolar bone loss at 15 weeks after infection (P <0.01). CONCLUSIONS The use of a P. gingivalis-adhered ligature supported a long-lasting infection of P. gingivalis in mice, resulting in P. gingivalis-induced alveolar bone breakdown.

Abstract
Gastric stromal tumors are the most common mesenchymal tumors, and such submucosal mass lesions of the upper gastrointestinal tract occur frequently. A 54-year-old woman with no major complaint was admitted to our hospital for evaluation of a mass located between the stomach and the pancreas. Abdominal ultrasonography, computed tomography and endoscopic ultrasonography demonstrated a mass lesion which was located near the lesser curvature of the stomach. Selective left gastric arterial angiography revealed a hypervascular mass, and we diagnosed it as a leiomyosarcoma of the stomach. At laparotomy, there was a large solid mass 5 cm in diameter along the minor curvature of the stomach. Tumor resection with partial gastrectomy was performed, and the histological diagnosis was a gastric stromal tumor with CD34 immunoreactivity. We report a case of stromal tumor of the stomach with extramural growth and review the literature.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine whether acute parenchymal lung diseases can be differentiated on the basis of the pattern and distribution of abnormalities revealed on high-resolution CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS High-resolution CT scans of 90 patients with acute parenchymal lung diseases (19 with bacterial pneumonia, 13 with mycoplasmal pneumonia, 21 with acute interstitial pneumonia, 18 with hypersensitivity pneumonitis, 10 with acute eosinophilic pneumonia, and nine with pulmonary hemorrhage) were independently assessed by two observers who had no knowledge of clinical or pathologic data. The observers recorded abnormalities, their first-choice diagnosis, and their degree of confidence in their first-choice diagnosis. RESULTS The two observers made a correct first-choice diagnosis in an average of 55 (61%) of 90 cases. Correct first-choice diagnosis was made in 50% of cases of bacterial pneumonia, 62% of mycoplasmal pneumonia, 90% of acute interstitial pneumonia, 72% of hypersensitivity pneumonitis, 30% of acute eosinophilic pneumonia, and 28% of pulmonary hemorrhage. CT findings allowed distinction between infectious and noninfectious causes in 81 (90%) of 90 cases. CONCLUSION High-resolution CT is helpful in the differential diagnosis of infectious from noninfectious acute parenchymal lung disease. However, high-resolution CT is of limited value in making a specific diagnosis.

Abstract
Fimbriae of Porphyromonas gingivalis are filamentous appendages on the cell surface and are thought to be one of the virulence factors. The fimA gene encoding the subunit protein of fimbriae, fimbrillin (FimA), was classified into four typeable variants (types I to IV). We previously examined the distribution of P. gingivalis in terms of fimA genotypes in periodontitis patients using a fimA type-specific PCR assay. However, some patients harbored P. gingivalis with untypeable fimA. In this study, we have cloned a new type (type V) of fimA from dental plaque samples. P. gingivalis with type V fimA was isolated from dental plaque of a periodontitis patient, and the isolate was named HNA-99. The deduced amino acid sequences were compared with those of type I P. gingivalis ATCC 33277, type II strain HW24D1, type III strain 6/26, and type IV strain HG564, and the homologies were found to be 45, 44, 43, and 55%, respectively. Southern blot analysis showed that the clinical isolate HNA-99 possessed P. gingivalis-specific genes sod and kgp. However, in terms of serological specificities, type V FimA showed a difference from other types of FimA. In addition, type V P. gingivalis bacteria were detected in 16.4% (12 of 73) of the P. gingivalis-positive patients with periodontitis by PCR assay using specific primers. Thus, a new type of fimA gene is now established, and the fimA genotyping could be useful in determining the disease-associated genotypes of P. gingivalis involved in the development of adult periodontitis.

Abstract
Streptococcus oralis is a member of the oral streptococcal family and an early-colonizing microorganism in the oral cavity of humans. S. oralis is known to produce glucosyltransferase (GTase), which synthesizes glucans from sucrose. The enzyme was purified chromatographically from a culture supernatant of S. oralis ATCC 10557. The purified enzyme, GTase-R, had a molecular mass of 173 kDa and a pI of 6.3. This enzyme mainly synthesized water-soluble glucans with no primer dependency. The addition of GTase markedly enhanced the sucrose-dependent resting cell adhesion of Streptococcus mutans at a level similar to that found in growing cells of S. mutans. The antibody against GTase-R inhibited the glucan-synthesizing activities of Streptococcus gordonii and Streptococcus sanguis, as well as S. oralis. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of GTase-R exhibited no similarities to known GTase sequences of oral streptococci. Using degenerate PCR primers, an 8.1-kb DNA fragment, carrying the gene (gtfR) coding for GTase-R and its regulator gene (rgg), was cloned and sequenced. Comparison of the deduced amino acid sequence revealed that the rgg genes of S. oralis and S. gordonii exhibited a close similarity. The gtfR gene was found to possess a species-specific nucleotide sequence corresponding to the N-terminal 130 amino acid residues. Insertion of erm or aphA into the rgg or gtfR gene resulted in decreased GTase activity by the organism and changed the colony morphology of these transformants. These results indicate that S. oralis GTase may play an important role in the subsequent colonizing of mutans streptoccoci.

Abstract
The retinas of 3 patients with typical retinitis pigmentosa (RP) were evaluated by optical coherence tomography (OCT), fluorescein angiography (FA), and fundus photography (FP). OCT showed that retinal thickness was decreased in the areas of the retina affected by RP, and nearly normal in the unaffected macular area. Reflectivity was partially decreased in the affected retinal areas and pigment masses were hyper-reflective. Reflectivity of the macular area was nearly normal except in the fovea, where it was decreased because of edema. Cystic spaces of the fovea were evident in Patient 1.

Abstract
Using a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-responsive murine B-cell line, CH12. LX, we assessed the possible role of CD14 in LPS-induced activation of B cells. Flow cytometric analysis indicated that CH12.LX cells expressed the CD14 molecule with a lower intensity than did the macrophage cell line J774.1. A reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and Northern blot analysis revealed low, but significant, levels of CD14 mRNA in CH12.LX cells, whose cDNA was identical to that of the mouse macrophage CD14 gene. After stimulation with LPS, CH12.LX cells proliferated, accompanied by up-regulations of CD14, transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta and interleukin (IL)-6 mRNA, and increased IgM and IgA secretion. In the absence of serum or with the addition of anti-CD14 monoclonal antibodies, however, LPS-stimulation induced neither the up-regulation of CD14 and TGF-beta mRNA nor an increase in IgA secretion. These findings indicate that CD14 expression is not restricted to myeloid cells, but is involved in some cellular activation events of murine B cells elicited by LPS. Furthermore, a CD14-independent pathway may also exist in the LPS-induced activation of B cells that leads to proliferation, IL-6 production and the enhancement of IgM (but not IgA) secretion.

Abstract
We report a relatively rare case of lymphoepithelial cyst of the pancreas. The patient, a 43-year-old man with no subjective symptoms, was found to have a pancreatic tumor during a physical examination. Based on the ultrasonographic and abdominal computed tomographic findings, a pancreatic cystic tumor was diagnosed. Endoscopic retrograde pancreatography showed a normal duct system. Enucleation was easily performed. Macroscopically, the cyst resembled an atheroma. Histopathologic examination disclosed lymphoepithelial cyst of the pancreas.

Abstract
The nucleotide sequence of a Streptococcus mutans serA gene that encodes D-3-phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase has been determined. The gene consisted of 1308-bp nucleotides coding for a 436-amino-acid polypeptide (48,546 Da). The deduced amino acid sequence showed a 66% identity with SerA from Bacillus subtilis and possessed specific residues (G-R-P-N-V-G) in the coenzyme-binding domain, alpha B helix. Recombinant streptococcal SerA was expressed using pMAL-c2 expression vector and purified by amylose resin affinity chromatography and DEAE-Sephacel column chromatography. This SerA enzyme catalyzed detectable reduction of alpha-ketoglutarate to 2-hydroxyglutaric acid. These findings indicate that the novel streptococcal phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase, SerA, is a member of a D-isomer-specific family of 2-hydroxyacid dehydrogenases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is widely known that individuals with Down syndrome (DS) often develop severe early-onset periodontal diseases. In this study, we examined the prevalence of periodontopathic bacteria in DS children to determine if specific pathogens are acquired in their childhood. METHODS The subjects were 60 DS children (2 to 13 years old, 5 in each age bracket) and 60 age-matched controls. Ten pathogens, Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Bacteroides forsythus, Treponema denticola, Prevotella intermedia, P nigrescens, Capnocytophaga ochracea, C. sputigena, Campyrobacter rectus, and Eikenella corrodens were surveyed in subgingival plaque samples using a polymerase chain reaction. Periodontal status was evaluated by probing depth, bleeding on probing, and gingival index. RESULTS No significant difference in periodontal status was observed between the DS and control groups, however, all of the pathogens were detected with greater frequency in the DS children. B. forsythus, T. denticola, P. nigrescens, and C. rectus were significantly prevalent throughout all age brackets of the DS children (P <0.01 or 0.05). The occurrence of P. gingivalis was also significant in the DS subjects over 5 years old. A cluster analysis of the microbial profiles of the DS subjects showed that gingivitis severity was associated with increased varieties of the harboring pathogens and the distribution of P. gingivalis. CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that various periodontopathogens can colonize in the very early childhood of DS patients and maturation of subgingival components, including P. gingivalis, plays an important role in the initiation of gingival inflammation.

Abstract
The cadherin-related neuronal receptor (CNR) family is localized to the synaptic junction, and their cytoplasmic domains interact with Fyn-tyrosine kinase. Here, we describe the chromosomal locations and the orthologous genomic structures of CNR family members in mice and humans. In the genomic organization, distinct exons, each of which encodes the N-terminus of a different CNR ("variable region"), are clustered in a tandem array, and these exons are spliced to a common region composed of three exons ("constant region"). We also discovered three alternative versions of the transcripts; a single variable exon connects with three different C-terminal tails, comparable to class-switching in the immunoglobulin heavy chain. Thus the CNR family in the central nervous system has similarities to the immunoglobulin and T-cell receptor genes in the immune system.

Abstract
The inhibitory effects of oolong tea extract (OTE) on the caries-inducing properties of mutans streptococci were examined in vitro. OTE reduced the rate of acid production by mutans streptococci accompanied with the retardation of growth rate of mutans streptococci, while the action by chromatographically isolated oolong tea polyphenol (OTF6) was weak. On the other hand, both oolong tea products decreased cell surface hydrophobicity of almost all the oral streptococci examined in the present study, and also induced cellular aggregation of Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus sanguis or Streptococcus gordonii. In these reactions, OTF6 showed a more pronounced activity than OTE. Furthermore, the oolong tea products inhibited the adherence of mutans streptococci to saliva-coated hydroxyapatite. These results suggest that OTF6 may inhibit bacterial adherence to the tooth surfaces by reducing the hydrophobicity of mutans streptococci, and OTE may inhibit caries-inducing activity of mutans streptococci by reducing the rate of acid production.

Abstract
We report a case of an aneurysm originating from an aberrant right subclavian artery, which was incidentally found as a compression deformity of the upper esophagus on a barium study in a 46-year-old man. Computed tomography (CT) clearly demonstrated the aneurysm of the aberrant right subclavian artery. In particular, reconstructed three-dimensional CT (3D-CT) was valuable in evaluating the positional relationships between the anomalous vessel with aneurysm and other structures.
