Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the effect of purple sweet potato (PSP) beverage rich in acylated anthocyanins on serum hepatic biomarkers in healthy Japanese men. DESIGN A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel study. SETTING Kumamoto in Japan. SUBJECTS Healthy adult men (30-60 years) with borderline hepatitis who had one or more of serum gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), aspertate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels over normal ranges, and who were negative for hepatitis virus were openly recruited by an advertisement. Of the 48 persons enrolled, 38 (mean age 43.0 years (30-54 years)) completed the study. METHODS The subjects were randomly assigned to the PSP group and the placebo group. During the 8-week intervention, the subjects in the PSP group consumed two bottles of the PSP beverage with acylated anthocyanins (200.3 mg anthocyanins per 125 ml per bottle) per day, and the subjects in the placebo group, two bottles of a placebo beverage (1.7 mg anthocyanins per 125 ml per bottle). All of the data measured were analyzed by two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) with groups and times. The data of the hepatic markers were analyzed using the Dunnett multiple comparison among the time points and t-test between groups at the same time point. Two-sided P<0.05 were defined as the level of significance. RESULTS Serum GGT, AST and ALT levels showed interactions (P<0.05) between the beverage groups and time; the others were not affected. The PSP beverage group showed lower hepatic marker levels than the placebo group during the ingestion period, particularly the GGT level (-14.1 IU/l, 95% Confidence intervel (CI) -25.4 to -2.7, P=0.017 at 2 weeks; -16.8 IU/l, 95% CI -36.2 to 2.5, P=0.081 at 4 weeks; -26.7 IU/l, 95% CI -47.6 to -5.7, P=0.014 at 6 weeks and -27.9 IU/l, 95% CI -49.9 to -5.9; P=0.014 at 8 weeks). No correlation between alcohol consumption and each hepatic biomarker level before and after the ingestion was observed. CONCLUSION The intake of the PSP beverage significantly decreased the serum levels of hepatic biomarkers, particularly the GGT level, in healthy men with borderline hepatitis.

Abstract
SUMMARY In the safety stenting, it is important to get to know the characteristics of a plaque. In petrous carotid artery stenosis, it is difficult to know the characteristics of the plaque.We paid our attention to the MPRAGE (Magnetization Prepared Rapid Acquisition with Gradient Echo) method on high resolving power MRI. By the MPRAGE method, low intensity was observed in these lesions of all cases. This result suggested that the plaque in petrous portion was a fibrous plaque. This method is useful to get to know the characteristics of a plaque in petrous portion before endovascular treatment.

Abstract
Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) has become one of the initial treatment options in patients with iliac artery occlusive disease. Stents have been recommended to correct procedural complications and improve long-term patency. Many series advocate routine stent placement after an otherwise uncomplicated PTA (primary stenting) in an attempt to prevent recurrent disease. Currently, many physicians in the United States seem to use stents in the iliac artery more liberally, even on a routine basis. There is little evidence to support this practice, however. It is still unclear whether a stent should be inserted primarily or selectively. This article provides the data from an 11-year experience of angioplasty with selective stenting for iliac artery occlusive lesions and reviews the current literatures on the iliac artery stent placement.

Abstract
Prostate cancer progresses from an androgen-dependent to androgen-independent stage after androgen ablation therapy. Mitochondrial DNA plays a role in cell death and metastatic competence. Further, heteroplasmic large-deletion mitochondrial DNA is very common in prostate cancer. To investigate the role of mitochondrial DNA in androgen dependence of prostate cancers, we tested the changes of normal and deleted mitochondrial DNA in accordance with the progression of prostate cancer. We demonstrated that the androgen-independent cell line C4-2, established by inoculation of the androgen-dependent LNCaP cell line into castrated mice, has a greatly reduced amount of normal mitochondrial DNA and an accumulation of large-deletion DNA. Strikingly, the depletion of mitochondrial DNA from androgen-dependent LNCaP resulted in a loss of androgen dependence. Reconstitution of normal mitochondrial DNA to the mitochondrial DNA-depleted clone restored androgen dependence. These results indicate that mitochondrial DNA determines androgen dependence of prostate cancer cell lines. Further, mitochondrial DNA-deficient cells formed tumors in castrated athymic mice, whereas LNCaP did not. The accumulation of large deletion and depletion of mitochondrial DNA may thus play a role in the development of androgen independence, leading to progression of prostate cancers.

Abstract
Autosomal-dominant, nonsyndromic hearing impairment is clinically and genetically heterogeneous. We encountered a large Japanese pedigree in which nonsyndromic hearing loss was inherited in an autosomal-dominant fashion. A genome-wide linkage study indicated linkage to the DFNA2 locus on chromosome 1p34. Mutational analysis of KCNQ4 encoding a potassium channel revealed a novel one-base deletion in exon 1, c.211delC, which generated a profoundly truncated protein without transmembrane domains (p.Q71fsX138). Previously, six missense mutations and one 13-base deletion, c.211_223del, had been reported in KCNQ4. Patients with the KCNQ4 missense mutations had younger-onset and more profound hearing loss than patients with the 211_223del mutation. In our current study, 12 individuals with the c.211delC mutation manifested late-onset and pure high-frequency hearing loss. Our results support the genotype-phenotype correlation that the KCNQ4 deletions are associated with later-onset and milder hearing impairment than the missense mutations. The phenotypic difference may be caused by the difference in pathogenic mechanisms: haploinsufficiency in deletions and dominant-negative effect in missense mutations.

Abstract
The fungus-growing termites Macrotermes cultivate the obligate ectosymbiontic fungi, Termitomyces. While their relationship has been extesively studied, little is known about the gut bacterial symbionts, which also presumably play a crucial role for the nutrition of the termite host. In this study, we investigated the bacterial gut microbiota in two colonies of Macrotermes gilvus, and compared the diversity and community structure of bacteria among nine termite morphotypes, differing in caste and/or age, using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) and clonal analysis of 16S rRNA. The obtained molecular community profiles clustered by termite morphotype rather than by colony, and the clustering pattern was clearly more related to a difference in age than to caste. Thus, we suggest that the bacterial gut microbiota change in relation to the food of the termite, which comprises fallen leaves and the fungus nodules of Termitomyces in young workers, and leaves degraded by the fungi, in old workers. Despite these intracolony variations in bacterial gut microbiota, their T-RFLP profiles formed a distinct cluster against those of the fungus garden, adjacent soil and guts of sympatric wood-feeding termites, implying a consistency and uniqueness of gut microbiota in M. gilvus. Since many bacterial phylotypes from M. gilvus formed monophyletic clusters with those from distantly related termite species, we suggest that gut bacteria have co-evolved with the termite host and form a microbiota specific to a termite taxonomic and/or feeding group, and furthermore, to caste and age within a termite species.

Abstract
SUMMARY We report a rare case of a ruptured de novo dissecting aneurysm induced by ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate. A 39-year-old woman underwent microvascular decompression for left hemifacial spasm. The offending vessel was left posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA). Left vertebral artery (VA) was mobilized and affixed to the dura mater with cyanoacrylate to remove pressure of PICA to the root exit zone of the facial nerve. The left VA was found to be intact at the time of the operation. One year later, the patient sufferd subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) caused by rupture of a newly-developed dissecting aneurysm of the left VA. Endovascular occlusion of the dissecting site was performed using Guglielmi detachable coils. We suppose mechanical injury and chemical reaction of ethyl 2-cyanoacrylate induced dissecting aneurysm.

Abstract
We present a case in which multiple pancreatic tumours were diagnosed as metastatic clear cell renal carcinomas with chemical shift MRI (CSI) before surgery. Radiologists may be unable to recognize the loss of intensity on CSI macroscopically. We believe that it is useful to make subtraction images and calculate signal intensity on CSI, even if the lesions are multiple metastatic tumours.

Abstract
A 1.4-kbp DNA fragment, including the NADH-linked acetylacetoin reductase/2,3-butanediol dehydrogenase (AACRII/BDH) gene from the chromosomal DNA of Bacillus cereus YUF-4, was cloned in Escherichia coli DH5alpha after its insertion into pUC119, and the resulting plasmid was named pAACRII119. The AACRII/BDH gene had an open reading frame consisting of 1047 bp encoding 349 amino acids. The enzyme exhibited not only AACR activity, but also BDH activity. However, the gene was not located in a 2,3-butanediol (BD) operon, as is the case in the BDH gene of Klebsiella pneumoniae and that of K. terrigena. In addition, there was no BD-cycle-related enzyme gene in the region surrounding the AACRII/BDH gene. The AACR and BDH activities in E. coli DH5alpha/pAACRII119 were 200-fold higher than those in the original B. cereus YUF-4. The characteristics of the AACRII/BDH from E. coli DH 5alpha/pAACRII119 are similar to those of the AACRII/BDH from B. cereus YUF-4. The AACRII/BDH was considered to belong to the NAD(P)- and zinc-dependent long-chain alcohol dehydrogenase (group I ADH) family on the basis of the following distinctive characteristics: it possessed 14 strictly conserved residues of microbial group I ADH and consisted of about 350 amino acids. The enzymatic and genetic characteristics of AACRII/BDH were completely different from those of BDHs belonging to the short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase family. These findings indicated that the AACRII/BDH could be considered a new type of BDH.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the characteristics of distal microembolic signals (MES) during iliac stenting using Doppler ultrasound monitoring. DESIGN Prospective clinical study. METHODS A 2-MHz probe was used to monitor continuously at the ipsilateral tibioperoneal trunks during technically and hemodynamically successful iliac stenting in 10 patients without infrainguinal occlusive lesion. MESs at guide-wire, balloon, or stent crossing (phase 1), predilatation (phase 2), stent deployment (phase 3), postdilatation (phase 4), and contrast medium or heparinized saline injection (at injection) were analyzed. Differentiation of gaseous emboli from particulate emboli was achieved by calculation of the sample volume length. RESULTS No distal embolic complications were observed. Five hundred and forty-one MESs were detected. The MES incidence and intensity in phase 3 were significantly higher than those in phase 1, phase 2, and phase 4 (p<0.05). The MES intensity at injection was significantly higher than that in each of four phases (p<0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Both the MES incidence and intensity were highest at stent deployment. Further study is required of microembolism during endovascular procedures in the lower extremities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE To investigate and compare the performance of bispectral index (BIS) and auditory evoked response index (AAI) in detecting the transition from consciousness to unconsciousness during anaesthesia induction by propofol, alone and in combination with fentanyl. METHODS Anaesthesia was induced with either an intravenous infusion of 30 mg kg(-1)h(-1) of propofol plus 2 microg kg(-1) of fentanyl (Group PF, n = 20) or an intravenous infusion of 30 mg kg(-1) h(-1) of propofol plus normal saline (Group P, n = 20). BIS, AAI and the doses of propofol administered were recorded at the end-point of unresponsiveness to verbal commands. The propofol plasma concentration was also measured. RESULTS The propofol dose and plasma propofol concentration required to achieve loss of consciousness were significantly lower in patients pretreated with fentanyl (P < 0.001). The mean BIS value at loss of consciousness was significantly different between the two groups (74.10 in Group PF vs. 60.80 in Group P) (P < 0.001). However, no difference in the AAI was seen between the two groups at loss of consciousness (32.90 in Group PF vs. 31.80 in Group P) (P > 0.05). In both groups, the regression analysis values (r-values) between BIS and plasma propofol concentrations at the onset of unconsciousness were higher than those between AAI and propofol concentrations (0.553 vs. 0.180 in Group P; 0.432 vs. 0.308 in Group PF). CONCLUSIONS These results show that a fentanyl bolus is effective in augmenting the hypnotic effect of propofol during anaesthesia induction. AAI appears to be able to measure the transition from consciousness to unconsciousness at similar values, regardless of whether or not fentanyl pretreatment is used whereas the BIS values were not independent of fentanyl pretreatment. This suggests that AAI may be a better indicator of conscious status during propofol/fentanyl anaesthesia, where it appears to be independent of the anaesthesia regimen.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the incidence of neonatal hearing loss in well-baby populations and in a neonatal intensive care unit and to identify potential risk factors for hearing loss in a neonatal intensive care unit which the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) had not recommended. METHODS Auditory screening was conducted in 226 infants (452 ears) born in Tohoku University from 2000 to 2001. The cases included 124 healthy newborn infants (248 ears), and 102 newborn infants (204 ears) treated in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Hearing impairment was confirmed through a primary screening of the automated auditory brainstem response (AABR) and a secondary test of the auditory brainstem response (ABR) with otolaryngologic evaluation. Based on these examinations, we divided infants into two groups, 'Pass' and 'Refer'. RESULTS Nine patients (15 ears) in Refer group were identified through our protocol. The incidence of the Refer group was 0.8% (1 out of 124) in the well-baby nursery, 7.8% (8 out of 102) in the NICU populations. The infants in Refer group were shown to have a higher incidence of congenital infection (P < 0.01), high C-reactive protein (CRP) (> or =10 mg/dl), chromosomal aberration, and central nervous system abnormality (P < 0.05). On the other hand, there were no statistical differences between the Pass and Refer groups in NICU, birth weight (<2200 g), gestational age, the values of total serum bilirubin, the values of arterial blood gases (pH, PaCO2 , PaO2 ), percutaneous oxygen saturation (SpO2), hemodynamics (blood pressure and heart rate) (P > 0.1). Respiratory status such as the Apgar score (the abbreviation for appearance, pulse, grimace, activity, respiration) (1 min; < or =4), (5 min; < or =6), Silverman retraction score, ototoxic drug use, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), Meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS), and persistent pulmonary hypertension of newborn (PPHN) were also not statistically related to hearing loss (>0.999). CONCLUSION Even in a small number of infants, there are positive relationships between hearing loss and congenital infection, high CRP (> or =10 mg/dl), chromosomal aberration and central nervous system abnormality. The CRP (> or =10 mg/dl) variable are not listed in the high-risk register published by the JCIH, but we can say that the variable may predict hearing impairment in our patient population. The possibility of autosomal recessive inheritance of genes for deafness is supposed when newborns have no other risk factors for hearing loss. This leads us to conclude that hearing screening is an effective way to find out hearing loss population.

Abstract
Dry soda-lime adsorbs significant quantities of halothane, thus influencing on the speed of the induction of anaesthesia with the agent and also on the recovery from anesthesia. Sevoflurane is a new inhaled anesthetic. Although the chemical degradation of sevoflurane with soda-lime has been studied, no information is available about its adsorption by soda-lime. This issue can not be neglected clinically. Two different soda-limes were placed in saturated vapour of sevoflurane for 17 hours to weight adsorbed sevoflurane. Then soda-limes adsorbing sevoflurane was sealed in a test tube after air-drying for 1) 0 min, 2) 10 min, 3) 30 min and 4) 17 hours. The vapour phase of sevoflurane in the test tube at various temperatures were determined using gas chromatography. Sevoflurane vapour concentrations in the test tubes increased in a temperature-dependent manner. Those in the conventional soda-lime were higher than those in the new soda-lime under any experimental conditions. Sevoflurane was released from soda-limes even after air-drying for 17 hours. These results show that much amount of sevoflurane is adsorbed by soda-limes and is released easily in the air. Thus there is a possibility for our patients to inhale unexpected inhaled anesthetics, if we use our anesthetic machine repeatedly.

Abstract
The biological role of the tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA)/plasmin system has long been implicated in ovarian function. We have recently shown that the follicular fluid of human ovaries contains an alpha(2)-macroglobulin/protease complex capable of converting single-chain (sc) tPA to the two-chain (tc) enzyme tPA, suggesting the occurrence of its corresponding enzyme in a free form in the fluid. The aim of the current study is therefore to gain further information about the putative sctPA-converting enzyme present in follicular fluid. Incubation of human recombinant sctPA with the fluid brought about the production of tctPA. It was also demonstrated that tctPA production resulted in the activation of endogenous fluid plasminogen. Production of tctPA and plasmin both was strongly inhibited by aprotinin, suggesting that the enzyme is a serine protease. The sctPA-converting enzyme was partially purified from the fluid by column chromatographies. The enzyme preferably hydrolyzed synthetic peptide substrates containing arginine at the P(1) position. The enzyme preparation had a protease inhibitor profile similar to that observed with the crude fluid sample. These results clearly demonstrated that follicular fluid contains an enzyme capable of efficiently converting sctPA to tctPA. Discovery of this sctPA-converting enzyme strongly suggests that the tPA/plasmin system in the preovulatory follicle of human ovaries is operated through the proteolytic conversion of sctPA to tctPA rather than being regulated by a fibrin-dependent mechanism.

Abstract
AIMS A metabolic pathway for L-2,3-butanediol (BD) as the main product has not yet been found. To rectify this situation, we attempted to produce L-BD from diacetyl (DA) by producing simultaneous expression of diacetyl reductase (DAR) and L-2,3-butanediol dehydrogenase (BDH) using transgenic bacteria, Escherichia coli JM109/pBUD-comb. METHODS AND RESULTS The meso-BDH of Klebsiella pneumoniae was used for its DAR activity to convert DA to L-acetoin (AC) and the L-BDH of Brevibacterium saccharolyticum was used to reduce L-AC to L-BD. The respective gene coding each enzyme was connected in tandem to the MCS of pFLAG-CTC (pBUD-comb). The divided addition of DA as a source, addition of 2% glucose, and the combination of static and shaking culture was effective for the production. CONCLUSIONS L-BD (2200 mg l(-1)) was generated from 3000 mg l(-1) added of DA, which corresponded to a 73% conversion rate. Meso-BD as a by-product was mixed by 2% at most. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY An enzyme system for converting DA to L-BD was constructed with a view to using DA-producing bacteria in the future.

Abstract
Diastereoselective total synthesis of isocarbacyclin, which features a fused bicyclic key intermediate available from l-ascorbic acid, is described. The key intermediate was prepared in multigram quantities by the Pauson-Khand reaction of l-ascorbic acid-based (R)-4,4-diallyl-2,2-dimethyl-5-(trimethylsilyl)ethynyl-1,3-dioxolane (3), discriminating diastereotopic groups and faces of the geminal allyl substituents.

Abstract
Gitelman syndrome (GS, MIM 263800) is an inherited disorder characterized by metabolic alkalosis with hypokalemia, hypomagnesemia, and hypocalciuria. The genetic abnormalities causing GS are known to lie in the thiazide-sensitive NaCl cotransporter (TSC), which is expressed in the distal tubule of the kidney. The TSC gene, located at chromosome 16, consists of 26 exons and encodes the protein containing 12 putative transmembrane domains with long intracellular amino and carboxy termini. Most of the abnormalities identified in GS were missense mutations, distributed throughout the TSC gene without a hot spot. A 42-year-old Japanese man was introduced for close examination of hypokalemia. In renal clearance studies using furosemide or thiazide, chloride clearance was increased after furosemide but not after thiazide administration. Furthermore, the distal fractional chloride reabsorption was dramatically decreased by furosemide but not thiazide administration, suggesting a defect in the distal tubule. We then analyzed the TSC gene to confirm the diagnosis of GS, and identified a novel G to T mutation at the acceptor splice site preceding exon 14, resulting in disruption of a conventional 3'AG consensus splice site. Abnormal splicing by this mutation is predicted to cause the formation of truncated TSC with a partial deletion of the transmembrane domain, which will loose the function of transporter. In conclusion, we have identified a unique novel splice site mutation of the TSC gene in GS. The predicted structure of this mutant TSC can conceivably cause an impairment of the transporter activity and thereby be responsible for the development of GS in our patient.

Abstract
We report a case of advanced colon cancer which was supposed to have arisen from a hyperplastic polyp in a 68-year-old man. Colonoscopy revealed a depressed reddish area with a surrounding elevated lesion that was of a faded color compared with the normal mucosa. After the mucosal surface had been sprayed with crystal violet dye, magnifying colonoscopy showed an amorphous area in the central depression and the surrounding, slightly elevated lesion had an asteroid pattern. The depressed area was therefore considered to be a colonic cancer surrounded by a hyperplastic polyp. Endoscopic ultrasonography showed that the lesion was infiltrating further than the deep submucosal layer and it was therefore decided to treat the patient by laparoscopically assisted right hemicolectomy. The depressed lesion was found to be a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma invading the muscularis propria (diagnosed as IIc + IIa-like advanced adenocarcinoma). The surrounding flat elevated lesion was found to be hyperplastic mucosa. No adenomatous lesions were found. There have been few reported cases in which a preoperative diagnosis of carcinoma in a hyperplastic polyp has been made, but the possibility of carcinogenesis from hyperplastic polyps has come under consideration recently. This case was considered to be important because it raises the possibility that nonpolypoid cancer can develop from a hyperplastic polyp.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS An increase in PAI-1 activity is thought to be a key factor underlying myocardial infarction. Mouse Pai-1 (mPai-1) activity shows a daily rhythm in vivo, and its transcription seems to be controlled not only by clock genes but also by humoral factors such as insulin and triglycerides. Thus, we investigated daily clock genes and mPai-1 mRNA expression in the liver of db/db mice exhibiting high levels of glucose, insulin and triglycerides. METHODS Locomotor activity was measured using an infrared detection system. RT-PCR or in situ hybridisation methods were applied to measure gene expression. Humoral factors were measured using measurement kits. RESULTS The db/ db mice showed attenuated locomotor activity rhythms. The rhythmic expression of mPer2 mRNA was severely diminished and the phase of mBmal1 oscillation was advanced in the db/db mouse liver, whereas mPai-1 mRNA was highly and constitutively expressed. Night-time restricted feeding led to a recovery not only from the diminished locomotor activity, but also from the diminished Per2 and advanced mBmal1 mRNA rhythms. Expression of mPai-1 mRNA in db/db mice was reduced to levels far below normal. Pioglitazone treatment slightly normalised glucose and insulin levels, with a slight reduction in mPai-1 gene expression. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION We demonstrated that Type 2 diabetes impairs the oscillation of the peripheral oscillator. Night-time restricted feeding rather than pioglitazone injection led to a recovery from the diminished locomotor activity, and altered oscillation of the peripheral clock and mPai-1 mRNA rhythm. Thus, we conclude that scheduled restricted food intake may be a useful form of treatment for diabetes.

Abstract
Myogenin and MyoD regulate the development of skeletal muscle, and their expressions are specific to the stages of myogenesis. Therefore, these myogenic regulatory proteins could be considered as sensitive and specific markers for rhabdomyosarcoma. In this report we investigated the immunohistochemical reactivities of myogenin and MyoD in two canine bladder botryoid rhabdomyosarcomas that were different in the degree of differentiation. MyoD was stained in the Ki-67 antigen-positive undifferentiated mesenchymal cells, which had proliferative activity similar to myoblasts differentiated from mesoblasts. In contrast, multinucleated neoplastic cells were positive for myogenin and alpha-sarcomeric actin but not for Ki-67 antigen, similar to the myotubes differentiated from myoblastic cells. The expressions of myogenin and MyoD were closely correlated to the histologic features of myogenic neoplastic cells.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS Recent developments in molecular genetics have opened a new era in genetic analysis accompanied by new concepts concerning genetic disorders. Although 30 genes responsible for nonsyndromic deafness have been discovered as of March 27, 2003, the connexin 26 gene (GJB2) is commonly found in cases of deafness of unknown origins. The GJB2 contains a predicted open reading frame of 785 base pairs, which makes it relatively easy to detect mutations. Accordingly, mutation analysis of GJB2 should be suitable for the screening of congenital deafness. STUDY DESIGN Prospective study. METHODS IsoCode Stix is a useful device to isolate DNA from small samples of blood, which can be delivered from remote areas. To apply the detection of common mutations of GJB2 to hearing screening, DNA was extracted from several droplets of blood applied to the IsoCode device, and an allele-specific amplification method with real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction was performed using GeneAmp 7700 with SYBR Green I dye. RESULTS DNA extracted from IsoCode was purified within 45 minutes, which was sufficient to detect the full sequence of GJB2. Four types of common GJB2 mutations were reliably detected within 2.5 hours. CONCLUSION IsoCode and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction will be promising tools for newborn screening of deafness genes in the future in DNA-based deafness screening, allowing early diagnosis of deafness and prompt training for language development.
