Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review aimed at identifying oncoviruses associated with head and neck malignant neoplasms (HNC). STUDY DESIGN Five databases and grey literature sources were searched following PRISMA guidelines. The risk of bias in individual studies was analyzed using the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist, and the certainty of evidence was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation tool. RESULTS One hundred and 19 studies were included in the qualitative synthesis. Gathered results of 57 studies were combined in a meta-analysis revealing a significant link between oncoviruses and the development of head and neck cancer, with the most common viruses identified were human papillomavirus (HPV)-16, HPV-18, and Epstein-Barr virus. More studies are needed to clarify the association of human cytomegalovirus and Merkel Cell Polyomavirus with HNC. CONCLUSIONS Although the role of viruses in cancer onset has been studied for years, our results demonstrated using a meta-analysis that these viruses are associated with HNC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is the most common type of thyroid cancer. Xenotropic and polytropic retrovirus receptor 1 (XPR1), identified as a cellular receptor, plays roles in many pathophysiological processes. However, the underlying function and molecular mechanisms of XPR1 in PTC remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the role of XPR1 in the process of PTC and the potential mechanisms. METHODS RNA-sequencing was performed for gene differential expression analysis in PTC patients' tissues. Immunohistochemical assay, real-time PCR, and western blotting assay were used to determine the expression of XPR1, BRAF, and P53 in PTC tissues. The function of XPR1 on the progression of PTC was explored using in vitro and in vivo experiments. The molecular mechanism of XPR1 was investigated using gene silencing, ELISA, immunofluorescence, western blotting, and real-time PCR assays. RESULTS We found that XPR1 was markedly upregulated in PTC tissues compared to adjacent noncancerous tissues, suggesting that high expression of XPR1 could be correlated with poor patient disease-free survival in PTC. In addition, the expression of BRAF and P53 in PTC tissues was substantially higher than in adjacent noncancerous tissues. Silencing of XPR1 reduced the proliferation, migration, and invasion capacities of TPC-1 cells in vitro and effectively inhibited the tumorigenecity of PTC in vivo. More importantly, silencing of XPR1 in TPC-1 cells significantly decreased the expression of XPR1, BRAF, and P53 both in vitro and in vivo. Interestingly, we demonstrated that XPR1 may positively activate the BRAF-ERK-P53 signaling pathway, further promoting PTC progression. CONCLUSION The findings reveal a crucial role of XPR1 in PTC progression and prognosis via the BRAF-ERK1/2-P53 signaling pathway, providing potential therapeutic targets for treating PTC.

Abstract
Implantation is the key initial complex stage of pregnancy. Several factors are involved in implantation, but acute and controlled inflammation has been shown to play as a key role. On the other hand, the role of viral infections in directly infecting blastocyst and trophoblast and inducing chronic and uncontrolled inflammation and disrupting microRNAs expression can make this review strongly attractive and practical. We aim to provide an overview of viral infections as the potential etiology of unsuccessful implantation pathophysiology through alteration of the cellular and molecular endometrial microenvironment. Based on our search, this is the first review to discuss the role of inflammation associated with viral infection in implantation failure.

Abstract
Chronic endometritis (CE) is a frequent pathological condition that is defined as localized inflammation in the endometrium. Some adverse fertility consequences such as recurrent miscarriage and failure of implantation are associated with chronic endometritis. On the one hand, inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of endometritis, and on the other hand, the role of viral infections in inducing inflammation can make this review strongly attractive and practical. We set out to provide an overview of viral infections as a potential etiology of CE pathophysiology through the alteration of an endometrial microenvironment and its association with infertility. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review to demonstrate the role of viral infection in chronic endometritis, and whether or not infection ultimately plays a role..

Abstract
Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), is a ubiquitous γ-Herpesvirus that infects over 95% of the human population and can establish a life-long infection without causing any clinical symptoms in healthy individuals by residing in memory B-cells. Primary infection occurs in childhood and is mostly asymptomatic, however in some young adults it can result in infectious mononucleosis (IM). In immunocompromised individuals however, EBV infection has been associated with many different malignancies. Since EBV can infect both epithelial and B-cells and very rarely NK cells and T-cells, it is associated with both epithelial cancers like nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) and gastric carcinoma (GC), with lymphomas including Burkitt Lymphoma (BL) or Post-transplant Lymphoproliferative Disorder (PTLD) and rarely with NK/T-cell lymphomas. Currently there are no approved antivirals active in PTLD nor in any other malignancy. Moreover, lytic phase disease almost never requires antiviral treatment. Although many novel therapies against EBV have been described, the management and/or prevention of EBV primary infections or reactivations remains difficult. In this review, we discuss EBV infection, therapies targeting EBV in both lytic and latent state with novel therapeutics developed that show anti-EBV activity as well as EBV-associated malignancies both, epithelial and lymphoproliferative malignancies and emerging therapies targeting the EBV-infected cells.

Abstract
Multiple factors have engaged in the progression of thyroid cancer (TC). Recent studies have shown that viral infection can be a critical factor in the pathogenesis of TC. Viruses, such as Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), may play an essential role in the occurrence, development, and even prognosis in TC. This review mainly explored the potential role of viral infection in the progress of TC. The possible mechanisms could be recognizing the host cell, binding to the receptors, affecting oncogenes levels, releasing viral products to shape a beneficial environment, interacting with immune cells to induce immune evasion, and altering the pituitary-thyroid axis. Thus, comprehensive knowledge may provide insights into finding molecular targets for diagnosing and treating virus-related TC.

Abstract
Some researchers have speculated that the prostatic microbiome is involved in the development of prostate cancer (PCa) but there is no consensus on certain microbiota in the prostatic tissue of PCa vs. healthy controls. This systematic review aims to investigate and compare the microbiome of PCa and healthy tissue to determine the microbial association with the pathogenesis of PCa. We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and Scopus databases. Articles were screened by two independent and blinded reviewers. Literature that compared the prostatic tissue microbiome of patients with PCa with benign controls was included. We found that PCa may be associated with increased Propionibacterium acnes, the herpesviridae and papillomaviridae families, and Mycoplasma genitalium, but definitive conclusions cannot be drawn from the existing data. Challenges include the difficulty of obtaining uncontaminated tissue samples and securing tissue from healthy controls. As a result, methods are varied with many studies using cancerous and "healthy" tissue from the same prostate. The organisms chosen for each study were also highly variable, making it difficult to compare studies. These issues have led to lower confidence in our results. Overall, further work is warranted to better understand the implications of the prostatic microbiome in the pathogenesis of PCa.

Abstract
The phenomenon of cell death is a vital aspect in the regulation of aberrant cells such as cancer cells. Anoikis is a kind of cell death that occurs when cells get separated from the extracellular matrix. Some cancer cells can inhibit anoikis in order to progress metastasis. One of the key variables that might be implicated in anoikis resistance (AR) is viral infections. The most important viruses involved in this process are Epstein-Barr virus, human papillomavirus, hepatitis B virus, human herpes virus 8, human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1, and hepatitis C virus. A better understanding of how carcinogenic viruses suppress anoikis might be helpful in developing an effective treatment for virus-associated cancers. In the current study, we review the role of the mentioned viruses and their gene products in anoikis inhibition.

Abstract
Introduction The chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome comprises phenotypically similar diseases characterized by abnormal development of the third and fourth branchial arches, resulting in variable combinations of congenital heart defects, dysmorphisms, hypocalcemia, palatal dysfunction, developmental or neuropsychiatric disorders, and impairment of the immune system due to thymic dysfunction. Other genetic syndromes, often called DiGeorge-like, share clinical and immunological features with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. This syndrome has been rarely associated with malignancies, mainly hematological but also hepatic, renal, and cerebral. Rarely, malignancies in the head and neck region have been described, although no aggregate of data on the development of thyroid neoplasms in patients with this clinical phenotype has been conducted so far. Materials and methods To characterize this possible association, a multicenter survey was made. Thus, we present a case series of five pediatric patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome or DiGeorge-like syndrome who were occasionally found with confirmed or highly suspected neoplasms of the thyroid gland during their follow-up. In three cases, malignancies were histologically confirmed, but their outcome was good due to an early recognition of suspicious nodules and precocious surgery. Conclusions This study underlines for clinicians the higher risk of neoplasms in the head and neck district for patients affected by these syndromes. It also emphasizes the importance of a prolonged clinical and ultrasound follow-up for patients with this clinical and immunological phenotype.

Abstract
As one of the frequent malignancies, breast cancer (BCa) is the foremost reason for cancer-related deaths among women. The role of Human papillomavirus (HPV) in chemoresistance has rarely been investigated in previous studies. The current study sets out to the possible role of HPV in BCa chemoresistance. In this research, 90 BCa tissue and 33 normal breast tissue were collected. We evaluated the presence of the HPV genome along with the viral (E2, E6, E7) and cellular gene expression associated with cell resistance to death. Statically significant differences in the prevalence of HPV between the BCa group (25.2% or 23/90) and the control group (21.8% or 7/32) were not found. HPV-16 and HPV-18 genotypes were the abundant HPV genotypes. Resistance to the Adriamycin-Cyclophosphamide (AC), paclitaxel regimen was elevated in the HPV- group (56/70) in comparison to the HPV+ group (14/70). Nevertheless, there was no significant difference in the prevalence of resistance to AC + paclitaxel + triple-negative breast cancer combination therapy between the HPV+ group (9/20) and in the HPV- group (11/20). In the BCa group in contrast to the control group, the expression level of Bcl-2, BCL-XL, and c-IAP2 demonstrated a significant decrease, while, the expression level of cytochrome C and caspase 3 was significantly increased. This study suggests that HPV infection might contribute to BCa chemoresistance through disrupt cellular genes involved in cell death.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prostate cancer (PCa) is one of the most common tumors in men, regardless of ethnicity and demographics. In many risk factors causing PCa, genes and viral infections are strong candidates for the development of prostate tumors. Indeed, tissue infections of PCa have been reported by the presence of several types of viruses including Human Papillomaviruses (HPV). OBJECTIVE the present study was planned to determine whether HPV DNA could be detected in the blood of known men with prostate cancer and to assess the potential association between HPV infection and clinico-pathological characteristics of the patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS In order to achieve our objectives, 150 liquid blood samples were taken from Moroccan patients, 100 patients with PCa, and 50 control cases. The viral DNA was extracted, calibrated and the target genes were amplified by PCR using specific primers and the use of 2% agarose gel with visualization under UV. RESULTS Of the 100 samples tested, (10%) were infected with HPV), However, none of the control cases were infected with HPV. The analysis of the data made it possible to establish a correlation between the frequency of the viral infection of the human papilloma and the tumoral criteria. CONCLUSION Therefore, this study strengthens the potential role of HPV as a cofactor in prostate cancer development, and we propose that infection with this virus may be involved in the development of PCa metastases.

Abstract
Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is one of eight known herpesviruses with the potential to infect humans. Globally, it is estimated that between 90-95% of the population has been infected with EBV. EBV is an oncogenic virus that has been strongly linked to various epithelial malignancies such as nasopharyngeal and gastric cancer. Recent evidence suggests a link between EBV and breast cancer. Additionally, there are other, rarer cancers with weaker evidence linking them to EBV. In this review, we discuss the currently known epithelial malignancies associated with EBV. Additionally, we discuss and establish which treatments and therapies are most recommended for each cancer associated with EBV.

Abstract
Aim: The present study aimed to find out the prevalence and any possible association between human herpesvirus (HHV-6) and primary brain tumors. Materials & methods: The systematic literature search was performed by finding related articles from major databases. Analysis was performed by comprehensive meta-analysis software. Results: A total of 13 (25 datasets) articles were included in the study, seven (15 datasets) of which were case/control and the rest (ten datasets) were cross-sectional studies. The pooled prevalence of HHV-6 among primary brain cancer patients was 29% (95% CI: 24–33%; I2 = 97.89%). An association was found between HHV-6 and primary brain cancer (summary odds ratio: 3.77% [95% CI: 2.59–5.49%; I2 = 19.0%]). Conclusion: Our analysis demonstrated that HHV-6 is associated with primary brain cancer. Reactivation of the virus could be triggered by the tumor, therefore, we cannot be certain that the virus appeared before the cancer development.

Abstract
Proteins carried by tumor-derived ectosomes play an important role in cancer progression, and are considered promising diagnostic markers. In the present study, a shotgun nanoLC–MS/MS proteomic approach was applied to profile and compare the protein content of ectosomes released in vitro by normal human thyroid follicular epithelial Nthy-ori 3-1 cells and human anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (TC) 8305C cells. Additionally, the pro-migratory and pro-proliferative effects of Nthy-ori 3-1- and 8305C-derived ectosomes exerted on the recipient cells were assessed in wound closure and Alamar Blue assays. A total of 919 proteins were identified in all replicates of 8305C-derived ectosomes, while Nthy-ori 3-1-derived ectosomes contained a significantly lower number of 420 identified proteins. Qualitative analysis revealed 568 proteins present uniquely in 8305C-derived ectosomes, suggesting their applicability in TC diagnosis and management. In addition, 8305C-derived ectosomes were able to increase the proliferation and motility rates of the recipient cells, likely due to the ectosomal transfer of the identified cancer-promoting molecules. Our description of ectosome protein content and its related functions provides the first insight into the role of ectosomes in TC development and progression. The results also indicate the applicability of some of these ectosomal proteins for further investigation regarding their potential as circulating TC biomarkers.

Abstract
Background MicroRNA (miRNA) has been reported to play a critical regulatory role in papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTC). However, the role of miR-221/222 in PTC remains unclear. Here, we performed this study to explore the diagnostic potentials and mechanisms of miR-221/222 in PTC. Methods First, we systematically analyzed the diagnostic value of miR-221/222 in the diagnosis PTC by pooling the published studies. Afterwards, we performed comprehensive bioinformatics analysis including gene ontology analysis, pathway enrichment analysis and protein-protein interaction analysis to explore the potential mechanisms of miR-221/222 involved in PTC. Results The overall sensitivity and specificity of miR-221/222 for PTC were 0.75 (95% CI: 0.70-0.80) and 0.80 (95% CI: 0.76-0.84) respectively with the AUC of 0.85 (95% CI: 0.81-0.88). The diagnostic performance varied among different subgroups including geographical locations, sample sources and sample sizes. Meanwhile, we found that a combination of miR-221/222 and other miRNAs when used in a diagnostic panel could improve the diagnostic accuracy than individual miR-221/222. Moreover, through the bioinformatics analysis, we confirmed that miR-221/222 targets were highly related to the molecular pathogenesis of PTC. The results revealed that miR-221/222 may exert important functions in PTC through thyroid hormone signaling pathway and some other key pathways by regulating some key genes. Conclusion These findings indicated that miR-221/222 have the potential to serve as auxiliary tools for diagnosing PTC. Further prospective clinical trials should be performed to assess the accuracy of these findings in a larger cohort and determine the clinical uses.

Abstract
Since the identification of the first human oncogenic virus in 1964, viruses have been studied for their potential role in aiding the development of cancer. Through the modulation of cellular pathways associated with proliferation, immortalization, and inflammation, viral proteins can mimic the effect of driver mutations and contribute to transformation. Aside from the modulation of signaling pathways, the insertion of viral DNA into the host genome and the deregulation of cellular miRNAs represent two additional mechanisms implicated in viral oncogenesis. In this review, we will discuss the role of twelve different viruses on cancer development and how these viruses utilize the abovementioned mechanisms to influence oncogenesis. The identification of specific mechanisms behind viral transformation of human cells could further elucidate the process behind cancer development.

Abstract
Wisely differentiating high-risk papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) patients from low-risk PTC patients preoperatively is necessary when comes to making a personalized treatment plan. It is not easy to stratify the risk of patients according to sonography or lab results before surgery. This study aims to seek out potential mutation gene markers that may be helpful in stratifying the risk of PTC. A custom panel of 439 PTC relevant and classic tumor metabolic pathway relevant genes was designed. Targeted capture sequencing was performed on 35 pairs of samples from 35 PTC tumors and 35 para-tumor thyroid tissues obtained during surgery. Variant calling and detection of cancer gene mutations were identified by bio-information analysis. Ingenuity Pathway Analysis (IPA) was performed to do functional enrichment analysis of high-frequency mutant genes. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) was performed on 6 PTC patients to explore the expression of protein associated with interested genes. Event-free survival (EFS) was calculated to determine which genes might affect the prognosis of patients. We have identified 32 high-frequency mutant genes in PTC including BRAF. RBL2 was found to be significantly correlated to event-free survival, FOXO1, MUC6, PCDHB9, NOTCH1, FIZ1, and RTN1 were significantly associated with EFS, while BRAF mutant was not correlated to any of the prognosis indicators. Our findings in this study might open more choices when designing thyroid gene panels used in FNA samples to diagnose PTC and predict the potentially aggressive behavior of PTC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the possible role of human papillomavirus (HPV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) coinfection as an etiological factor for prostate cancer (PCa) development. METHODS This case-control study was conducted on 67 patients with PCa and 40 control subjects. The expression levels of cellular and viral factors involved in inflammation, tumor progression, and metastasis were quantified, using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) assay. RESULTS The EBV/HPV coinfection was reported in 14.9% of patients in the case group and 7.5% of the control subjects. The high-risk types of HPV, that is, HPV 16 and HPV 18, were responsible for 50 and 30% of HPV/EBV-coinfected PCa cases (n = 10), respectively. No significant relationship was observed between PCa and HPV/EBV coinfection (OR = 2.9, 95% CI: 0.18-45.2, P = 0.31). However, the highest percentage of HPV genome integration was found in the HPV/EBV-coinfected PCa group (8/10; 80%). Also, the mean expression levels of inflammatory factors (IL-17, IL-6, TNF-α, NF-κB, VEGF, ROS, and RNS), anti-apoptotic mediators (Bcl-2 and survivin), and anti-anoikis factors (Twist and N-cadherin) were significantly higher in the HPV/EBV-coinfected PCa group, compared to the non-coinfected PCa cases. Nevertheless, the tumor-suppressor proteins (p53 and pRb) and E-cadherin (inhibitor of anoikis resistance) showed significant downregulations in the HPV/EBV-coinfected PCa group, compared to the non-coinfected PCa cases. CONCLUSION The HPV/EBV coinfection may be an etiological factor for PCa through modulation of cellular behaviors.

Abstract
Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is recognized as the most important cofactor in the etiology of cancers of the cervix, esophagus, larynx, and nasopharynx. Experimental evidence suggests that HPV could have an oncogenic influence on thyroid follicular cells; however, to the best of our knowledge, there is no record of its role in human thyroid gland neoplasms. Objective: The purpose of this study is to describe the frequency and the types of HPV present in neoplastic thyroid tissue by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Methods: Over 157 samples were analyzed of paraffin-embedded tissue from malignant and benign thyroid tumors. All the paraffin blocks were selected consecutively from the Pathology Tissue Bank archive of the Western Medical Center. The molecular detection and typing were performed at the Molecular Microbiology Laboratory of the Biomedical Research Center, Mexican Institute of Social Security. Results: The frequency of HPV findings was 2.5% (four cases). HPV-6 was found in two cases of thyroid hyperplasia (2.5%), and HPV-33 in two cases of papillary cancer (4.6%). Conclusion: The presence of HPV is not frequent in thyroid neoplasms, at least in the studied population. Due to the low prevalence of this virus in our sample, it is not possible to reach conclusions. Further research is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study is to address the role of HPV in prostate cancer (PCa) development through the inducement of resistance to anoikis. METHODS In this case-control study, prostate tissues and blood samples were collected from 116 individuals, including 72 cases with PCa and 44 non-malignant prostate tissue samples as a control group. The expression level of HPV genes (E2, E6, and E7) and cellular genes including anti-apoptotic mediators (Bcl-2 and survivin), tumor suppressor proteins (Rb and p53), and some mediators involved in anoikis resistance and invasiveness (E-cadherin, N-cadherin, Twist, PTPN13 and SLUG) were evaluated. RESULTS HPV genome was identified in 36.1% cases and 15.9% control samples, additionally there was found to be a statistic significant association between the presence of HPV and PCa (OR = 1.64, 95% C.I = 0.8-1.8, P-value = 0.023). HPV genotype 16 and 18 were the most prevalent genotype in both in the PCa group and the control group. The expression level of the tumor suppressor proteins (Rb and p53) and anti-apoptotic mediators (Bcl-2 and Survivin) were significantly decreased and increased, respectively, in the HPV-positive specimens compared to the HPV-negative specimens. Furthermore, the mean expression level of N-cadherin, SLUG, and TWIST in the HPV-positive specimens was higher than HPV-negative specimens while the mean expression level of PTPN-13 and E-cadherin genes in the HPV-positive specimens was lower than HPV-negative specimens. CONCLUSION Our study suggests that HPV infection may be involved in the development of PCa metastases by modulating anoikis resistance related genes.

Abstract
Numerous risk factors for breast cancer (BC) have been identified. High-risk human papilloma virus (HR-HPV) is the etiological agent of cervical cancer and in some cases of head and neck cancer, specifically oropharyngeal cancer, but the role of HR-HPV in evoking neoplasia in BC is still unclear. In this study, all women above the age of 18 visiting the oncology clinic at Al-Azhar university hospital and Ain Shams specialized hospital between the period of February 2017 and March 2018 were invited to participate. We determined the prevalence of HR-HPV genotypes 16, 18, and 31 in breast tissue samples from 72 women with treatment-naïve BC and 15 women with benign breast lesions (BBL) by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) and primer sets targeting the E6 and E7 regions. High-risk human papilloma virus DNA was detected in 16 of 72 (22.2%) BC cases (viral load range = 0.3-237.8 copies/uL) and 0 of 15 women with BBL. High-risk human papilloma virus was detected in 14 of 16 (87.5%), 2 of 16 (12.5%), and 0 of 16 (0%) for genotypes 16, 18, and 31, respectively. Forty-three age-matched healthy Egyptian women were enrolled as controls for assessment of local risk factors that can be used to initiate a strategy of BC prevention in Egypt. Assessment of the risk factors demonstrated that low education level, passive smoking, lack of physical activity, family history of cancer, and use of oral contraception were significant risk factors for BC. In conclusion, our results lead us to postulate that HR-HPV infection may be implicated in the development of some types of BC in Egyptian women. In addition, identification of local risk factors can support practical prevention strategies for BC in Egypt.

Abstract
We report an extremely rare case of adult Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) in a patient with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) and Castleman disease (CD). A 46-year-old man visited our hospital with anaemia; systemic imaging showed an abdominal and a left thyroid mass. Biopsy confirmed CD for the abdominal mass and PTC for the thyroid mass. Two months after, he presented with headache and a right parietal lump. Brain CT and enhanced MRI revealed an osteolytic mass with enhancement in the right parietal skull. Surgical removal and biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of skull LCH. The BRAF mutation was positive on PTC and negative on CD and LCH. We conducted surgical resection only for PTC and LCH; surgical resection with siltuximab for multicentric CD. At the 25-month follow-up, there was no recurrence or progression. We may consider of syndromic nature of these diseases to establish a treatment strategy.

Abstract
Thyroid storm is a rare and a life-threatening condition, and serious complications could happen if not diagnosed and managed early. The typical clinical manifestations of hyperthyroidism are exaggerated in thyroid storm, particularly marked pyrexia and tachycardia, and altered mental status as agitation, delirium, or coma. Many precipitating factors contribute to the presentation of thyroid storm, and new recent factors like Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) could play a significant role. Serious and rare complications from the thyroid storm can increase the risk of mortality and morbidity up to 30% as fulminant hepatic failure, which is reported only a handful of times in the literature. Also, congestive heart failure can be part of the multiorgan dysfunction from the presentation, if associated with the thyroid storm. In this report, we present a case of thyroid storm precipitated by EBV and causing fast atrial fibrillation complicated by congestive heart failure and fulminant hepatic failure for 46-year-old Bangladeshi male not known to have any medical illness. He presented to the emergency department with 10-day history of an on and off subjective fever, associated with generalized abdominal pain and vomiting. He developed palpitation at the day of presentation. He was managed, stabilized, intubated, and shifted to the ICU as the patient started to be apneic after the conscious sedation for the cardioversion. During the admission anti-EBV viral capsid antigen IgM antibody was positive. The patient was discharged after five days in ICU and 14 days of overall hospital stay. Although the complication of thyroid storm as fulminant hepatic failure and congestive heart failure are rare, they should be considered in cases with thyroid storm. The pre-existing of EBV as a precipitating factor should always be considered, and more studies in these regards need to be done.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Central nervous system tumors are a diverse group of tumors that account for 2% of all adult cancers and 17% of childhood malignancies. Several internal and external risk factors are involved in the development of this cancer such as viral infections. The aim of this study was to the determination of the EBV infection frequency and the expression level of miR-122 and miR-BART in CNS tumors samples. METHODS One hundred and thirty-eight fresh tissue sample (106 case and 32 control) was collected from CNS specimens. The presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA was examined by PCR assay and the expression level of miR-122 and miR-BART were evaluated by using real-time PCR assay in CNS tissue samples. RESULTS EBV DNA was detected in 17% (18 of 106) of tumors tissue samples and 6.4% (2 of 32) of control samples. according to results, there was a significant relationship between the presence of EBV-DNA with CNS tumors. Additionally, the expression level of miR-122 was significantly downregulated in the EBV-positive sample compared to that of the EBV-negative sample. Also, the level of EBV-BART1-3p expression was significantly higher in EBV-positive tumors samples than EBV-positive normal samples. CONCLUSION The results of this study suggest that the EBV could change the condition of cancer cells by altering the expression of miR-122 and EBV-BART1-3p and maybe contribute to the development of cancer cells. However, the role of viral infections in CNS cancer requires further studies. <br />.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The high mortality rate of lung cancer can be justified that strong need to explore new aspect of tumor biology. Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been detected as risk factor for the development of lung cancer. The aim of this study was to determine the role of HPV and cellular/miRNAs genes expression in the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and development of lung cancer. METHODS In this case-control study, 109 lung cancer tissue and 52 controls were included. We analyzed the presence of HPV infection, its genotypes (in positive samples) and the expression of viral genes (E2, E6 and E7). Also, We examined the expression of celluar factors including (a) p53 and retinoblastoma (Rb) (as anti-carcinogenic genes), (b) EMT related genes, (c) selected miRNAs. RESULTS Our results reported 51.4% and 23.1% of HPV genome in tumor tissues and control tissues samples, respectively. There was a significant association between the HPV positive status and lung cancer (OR = 3.26, 95% C.I = 1.47-7.02, P = 0.001). HPV type 16 was the most prevalent genotype in tissues. The expression of p53, RB, TIMP1, CCNG-1, E-cad and PTPN13 were decreased while MMP-2 and N-cad were increased in HPV-positive tumor/control tissues compared to HPV-negative tissues. Also, among miRNAs, let-7, miR-23, miR-34, miR-125, miR-146 were downregulated and miR-20, miR-424 were upregulated in HPV-positve tissues compared to HPV-negative tissues. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated that HPV infection and interaction with cellular genes and miRNAs promote EMT which involved in the lung cancer development.

Abstract
Background Papillary thyroid cancer has been associated with chronic inflammation. A systematic understanding of immune cell infiltration in PTC is essential for subsequent immune research and new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Methods Three different algorithms, single-sample gene set enrichment analysis (ssGSEA), immune cell marker and CIBERSORT, were used to evaluate immune cell infiltration levels (abundance and proportion) in 10 data sets (The Cancer Genome Atlas [TCGA], GSE3467, GSE3678, GSE5364, GSE27155, GSE33630, GSE50901, GSE53157, GSE58545, and GSE60542; a total of 799 PTC and 194 normal thyroid samples). Consensus unsupervised clustering divided PTC patients into low-immunity and high-immunity groups. Weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) and gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) were used to analyze the potential mechanisms causing differences in the immune response. Results Compared with normal tissues, PTC tissues had a higher overall immune level and higher abundance levels and proportions of M2 macrophages, Tregs, monocytes, neutrophils, dendritic cells (DCs), mast cells (MCs), and M0 macrophages. Compared with early PTC, advanced PTC showed higher immune infiltration and higher abundance levels and proportions of M2 macrophages, Tregs, monocytes, neutrophils, DCs, MCs, and M0 macrophages. Compared to the low-immunity group, the high-immunity group exhibited more advanced stages, larger tumor sizes, greater lymph node metastases, higher tall-cell PTCs, lower follicular PTC proportions, more BRAF mutations, and fewer RAS mutations. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection was the most significantly enriched Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway for key module genes. Conclusions In human PTC, M2 macrophages, Tregs, monocytes, neutrophils, DCs, MCs, and M0 macrophages appear to play a tumor-promoting role, while M1 macrophages, CD8+ T cells, B cells, NK cells, and T follicular helper (TFH) cells (including eosinophils, γδ T cells, and Th17 cells with weak supporting evidence) appear to play an antitumor role. During the occurrence and development of PTC, the overall immune level was increased, and the abundance and proportion of tumor-promoting immune cells were significantly increased, indicating that immune escape had been aggravated. Finally, we speculate that EBV may play an important role in changing the immune microenvironment of PTC tumors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer morbidity and mortality worldwide. Several studies have suggested that Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is an important risk factor in the development of lung cancer. In this study, we aim to address the role of HPV in the development of lung cancer mechanistically by examining the induction of inflammation and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) by this virus. METHODS In this case-control study, tissue samples were collected from 102 cases with lung cancer and 48 controls. We examined the presence of HPV DNA and also the viral genotype in positive samples. We also examined the expression of viral genes (E2, E6 and E7), anti-carcinogenic genes (p53, retinoblastoma (RB)), and inflammatory cytokines in HPV positive cases. RESULTS HPV DNA was detected in 52.9% (54/102) of the case samples and in 25% (12/48) of controls. A significant association was observed between a HPV positive status and lung cancer (OR = 3.37, 95% C.I = 1.58-7.22, P = 0.001). The most prevalent virus genotype in the patients was type 16 (38.8%). The expression of p53 and RB were decreased while and inflammatory cytokines were increased in HPV-positive lung cancer and HPV-positive control tissues compared to HPV-negative lung cancer and HPV-negative control tissues. Also, the expression level of E-cad and PTPN-13 genes were decreased in HPV- positive samples while the expression level of SLUG, TWIST and N-cad was increased in HPV-positive samples compared to negative samples. CONCLUSION Our study suggests that HPV infection drives the induction of inflammation and EMT which may promote in the development of lung cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to determine the presence of HPV in patients with Prostate cancer (PCa) and its possible association with cancer progression. METHODS In this case-control study, fresh prostate tissues and blood samples were collected from 90 individuals, including 58 cases samples with PCa and 32 non-malignant prostate tissue samples as a control group. The expression level of viral genes (E2, E6, and E7) and cellular factors including tumor suppressor proteins (Rb and p53), anti-apoptotic mediators (Bcl-2 and survivin), and some mediators involved in inflammation and angiogenesis was evaluated. RESULTS The presence of the HPV genome was identified in 19 out of the 58 cases (32.7%) and five out of the 32 controls (15.6%). However, there was not any statistically significant relationship between the presence of the HPV genome and PCa (OR = 2.63, 95% C.I = 0.89-7.91, P-value = 0.078). Moreover, the HPV high-risk genotypes 16 and 18 were detected in 47.4% and 31.6% of HPV-infected PCa tissues, respectively. The expression level of the tumor suppressor proteins (Rb and p53) significantly decreased in the HPV-infected samples compared to the HPV negative specimens (P-value = 0.01, P-value = 0.01, respectively). However, the expression level of the anti-apoptotic mediators and those involved in angiogenesis and inflammation significantly increased in the HPV-infected PCa group compared to the HPV-negative PCa and control groups (P-value < 0.05, respectively). CONCLUSION Our study suggests that although it is not definitely known whether HPV causes PCa, this virus probably modulates PCa cell behavior by affecting inflammation, angiogenesis, and apoptosis mechanisms, which, in turn, promotes tumorigenesis.

Abstract
Although the evolution of differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is usually indolent, some tumors grow fast, metastasize, and may be fatal. Viruses have been associated with many human tumors, especially the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which shows a high viral load in DTC. In order to evaluate the ability of the virus to cause morphological and molecular changes in neoplastic thyroid cell lines TPC-1, BCPAP, and 8505C, a viral adaptation was performed for the analysis of EBV cytopathic effect (CPE), viral kinetics and gene expression analysis of oncogenes KRAS, NRAS, HRAS, and TP53. Comparison of inoculated cells with non-inoculated control cells showed that all tumor cell lines were permissive to the virus. The virus caused CPE in the TPC-1 and 8505C, but not in BCPAP cells. Viral kinetic was similar in both BCPAP and 8505C with a point of eclipse at 24 h post infection. TPC-1 cell line displayed a decreasing growth curve, with highest viral load right after inoculation, which decreased over time. There was hyperexpression of TP53 and NRAS in BCPAP cell (p = 0.012 and p = 0.0344, respectively). The 8505C cell line presented NRAS hyperexpression (p = 0.0255), but lower TP53 expression (p = 0.0274). We concluded that neoplastic thyroid cell lines are permissive to EBV that the virus presents different viral kinetic patterns in different cell lines and produces a CPE on both well-differentiated and undifferentiated thyroid cell lines. We also demonstrated that EBV interferes in oncogene expression in thyroid neoplastic cell lines, suggesting that these effects could be related to different tumor progression patterns.

Abstract
The role of interferon β-1b (IFNβ-1b), used for multiple sclerosis (MS) therapy, in cancer occurrence is uncertain. There is evidence supporting the role of human herpesvirus 4 [Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)] in thyroid cancer and MS. Simultaneous occurrence of papillary and medullary carcinomas is rare, and its association with MS in a young woman raises questions. A 46-year-old female patient was diagnosed with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis in 2008. In 2018, cervical MRI detected a thyroid nodule with right cervical adenopathy. Her thyroid function was normal, but increased calcitonin levels were found (70.53 pg/ml; normal value: <9.82 pg/ml). EBV serology tested positive. Paraclinical studies ruled out multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome. Whole thyroid resection with whole cervical lymph node dissection was performed. To our knowledge, this is the first case that describes an association between MS and thyroid collision tumors. Histological examination ascertained both papillary and medullary thyroid cancer. After surgery, the calcitonin level normalized, and the patient received a therapeutic dose of iodine-131. IFNβ-1b therapy was discontinued. The coexistence of thyroid cancers in MS patients could be explained by immune-mediated inflammation. Although EBV is not the only agent responsible for the development of MS or thyroid cancers, it could be considered a contributory factor in our case. Further research on EBV involvement in the occurrence of simultaneous immune pathologies in various organs is needed to confirm these data.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess effects of the sets of EBV and HPV expressed proteins simultaneously on the sets of cellular/inflammatory factors in breast and thyroid cancers using structural equation modeling. In this multi-center case-control study, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 83 breast and 57 thyroid specimens were collected from the eligible patients. In addition, 31 and 18 histopathological evaluated normal breast and thyroid samples were also examined as age-matched healthy controls. In addition, ELISA and Real-time PCR were used to measure the expression level of viral and cellular/inflammatory genes and proteins. Structural equation modeling was used to test the causal associations between the sets of EBV and HPV expressed proteins with inflammatory factors in breast and thyroid cancers development. Breast cancer patients had a higher incidence of HPV-positively and EBV-positively than healthy controls (OR=1.66, 95%CI=0.79-3.47, P-value=0.177), (OR=3.18, 95%CI=1.52-6.63, P-value=0.002), respectively. In addition, thyroid cancer patients had a significantly higher incidence of EBV-positivity than healthy controls (OR=3.72, 95% CI=1.65-8.36, P-value=0.001). After fitting the SEM model, HPV proteins factor has significant direct and total effects on the cellular/inflammatory factors in breast cancer (direct effect: β=0.426, P-value=0.01; total effect: β=0.549, P-value<0.001). However, EBV proteins factor has most significant total effect on the cellular/inflammatory factors in breast cancer (total effect: β=0.804, P-value<0.001) than the cellular/inflammatory factors in thyroid cancer (total effect: β=0.789, P-value<0.001). For the first time, a significant association between EBV and HPV -genes, anoikis resistance and the development of breast and thyroid cancers demonstrated by using SEM, Simultaneously.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Chronic viral infection is an important risk factor in the development of cancer. Failure of immune response to clear the oncogenic infection can facilitate cancer progression. The aim of the present study was to analyze early and late activation of T-lymphocytes related to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection by the expression of markers of activation (CD69, CD25) on the surface of T-lymphocytes (CD3+, CD4+, CD8+) in patients bearing laryngeal cancer according to absence/presence immunoglobulin G antibodies to EBV nuclear antigen (EBNA1). MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-three patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LC) and 20 volunteers without cancer (control group) were enrolled in the study. Peripheral blood samples were collected from every individual. The markers of activation of T-lymphocytes were determined by flow cytometry, whereas commercial immunoenzymatic assay kits were used for detection of anti-viral capsid antigen (VCA) IgM, anti-VCA IgG, and anti-EBNA1 IgG. RESULTS Increased early activation of CD8+ and CD4+ T-lymphocytes was found in patients with LC. There was a significantly higher proportion of CD4+ and CD8+T-lymphocytes expressing CD69 antigen in patients with LC compared to the control group. The proportion of CD4+ CD25+ T-lymphocytes in patients with LC positive for anti-EBNA1 IgG and anti-VCA IgM was lower compared to patients without antibodies to VCA IgM. CONCLUSION The dysfunction of immune response in larynx cancer patients could be associated with EBV infection.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The associations between viruses and the cancer have been conducted in several studies while there has been no systematic review and meta-analysis about the association between viral infections and thyroid cancer (TC). Therefore, we investigated the association between viral infection and TC risk. METHODS Systematic search was done from 1994 to 2019 in Web of sciences (ISI), PubMed, and Scopus databases. Pooled logarithm of odds ratio (OR) and their corresponding 95 % confidence interval (CI) and pooled prevalence of viral infections were calculated to find the association between the viral infections and TC risk and overall prevalence of the viral infections in TC. RESULTS Twenty-three of 852 original articles were selected and included in the study. According to the results of the random effect meta-analysis, the pooled prevalence of viral infections in the TC patients was 37 % (95 % C. I = 22 %-55 %). In addition, there was a significant association between viral infections (log (OR) = 1.51, 95 % credible interval = 0.68-2.39) and TC risk. The highest associations were observed between TC risk and Simian Vacuolating Virus 40 (SV40) and B19 infections, respectively. The lowest non-significant association was found between TC risk and Poliovirus type 1 infection. The significantly heterogeneity was observed between included studies (Q test: p-value<0.001; I2 = 73.82 %; τ2 = 1.08, 95 % Cr. I = 0.47-1.94). CONCLUSIONS Results clearly demonstrated the potential pathogenetic association between viral infections and increased risk of TC.

Abstract
Cervical cancer (CC) is the fourth most common cause of cancer death in women. The most important risk factor for the development of CC is cervical infection with human papilloma virus (HPV). Inflammation is a protective strategy that is triggered by the host against pathogens such as viral infections that acts rapidly to activate the innate immune response. Inflammation is beneficial if it is brief and well controlled; however, if the inflammation is excessive or it becomes of chronic duration, it can produce detrimental effects. HPV proteins are involved, both directly and indirectly, in the development of chronic inflammation, which is a causal factor in the development of CC. However, other factors may also have a potential role in stimulating chronic inflammation. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) (a class of noncoding RNAs) are strong regulators of gene expression. They have emerged as key players in several biological processes, including inflammatory pathways. Abnormal expression of miRNAs may be linked to the induction of inflammation that occurs in CC. Exosomes are a subset of extracellular vesicles shed by almost all types of cells, which can function as cargo transfer vehicles. Exosomes contain proteins and genetic material (including miRNAs) derived from their parent cells and can potentially affect recipient cells. Exosomes have recently been recognized to be involved in inflammatory processes and can also affect the immune response. In this review, we discuss the role of HPV proteins, miRNAs and exosomes in the inflammation associated with CC.

Abstract
Several subsets of regulatory CD4+ T cells (CD4+ Tregs) have been described in peripheral blood and tumor microenvironment of breast cancer (BC) patients and may play a role in the progression of BC. High-risk human papilloma virus (HR-HPV) has a causal role in cervical, head, and neck tumors but the role of HR-HPV in evoking neoplasia in BC is still unclear. In this study we assessed the prevalence of CD4+CD25+ FOXP3+ regulatory T cells (CD4+Tregs) and CD3+ CD8+ T cells by flow cytometry in peripheral blood from a total of 55 Egyptian women, including 20 treatment-naïve BC, 15 with breast benign lesions (BBL), and 20 healthy volunteers (HV). HR-HPV genotypes type 16, 18, and 31 were investigated in breast tissue from all BC and BBL patients using Real-Time PCR. HR-HPV was detected in 4/20 (20%) and 0/15 (0%) BC and BBL patients respectively. The frequency of CD4+ Tregs was significantly higher in BC compared to BBL and HV, (P < 0.001). In addition, we observed a significantly higher frequency of CD3+ CD8+ T cells in peripheral blood of patients with late stage III BC compared to early stage I and II BC (P = 0.011). However, there was no significant association between the ratio of CD8+ T cell to CD4+ Tregs frequencies and the expression of Estrogen Receptor (ER), Progesterone Receptor (PR), and Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 (HER2). These results lead us to postulate that the association between the frequency of CD4+ Tregs and CD8+ T cells in the peripheral blood may be a prognostic or predictive parameter in Egyptian women with BC. In addition, HR-HPV infection may be implicated in the development of some types of BC in Egyptian women.

Abstract
Cellular microRNAs (miRNAs) were identified as a key player in the posttranscriptional regulation of cellular-genes regulatory pathways. They also emerged as a significant regulator of the immune response. In particular, miR-146a acts as an importance modulator of function and differentiation cells of the innate and adaptive immunity. It has been associated with disorder including cancer and viral infections. Given its significance in the regulation of key cellular processes, it is not surprising which virus infection have found ways to dysregulation of miRNAs. miR-146a has been identified in exosomes (exosomal miR-146a). After the exosomes release from donor cells, they are taken up by the recipient cell and probably the exosomal miR-146a is able to modulate the antiviral response in the recipient cell and result in making them more susceptible to virus infection. In this review, we discuss recent reports regarding miR-146a expression levels, target genes, function, and contributing role in the pathogenesis of the viral infection and provide a clue to develop the new therapeutic and preventive strategies for viral disease in the future.

Abstract
Thyroid diseases (TDs) have been widely associated with HIV infection. However, data about TDs prevalence and distribution are controversial, and few published studies are available. The aim of our study was to assess prevalence and risk factors of symptomatic thyroid disturbances, including thyroid cancers, in a large cohort of HIV-infected patients. A retrospective cohort study was performed at the Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases of the University of Brescia, Italy, in the period 2005–2017. We identified all HIV-positive patients with a diagnosis of symptomatic TD in the electronic database of our Department (HIVeDB); we also operated a record-linkage between our data and the Health Protection Agency database (HPADB) of Brescia Province. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine risk factors associated with TDs onset; an incidence rate analysis was also performed. During the study period, 6343 HIV-infected patients have been followed at our Department; 123 received a diagnosis of symptomatic TD (1.94% of the entire cohort). In the TDs group, almost half of patients were females (n = 59, 48%), mean age was 47.15 years (SD: 11.56). At TD diagnosis, mean T CD4+ cell count was 491 cell/uL and most patients showed undetectable HIV-RNA (n = 117, 95.12%). Among them, 81 patients were found to have hypothyroidism (63 with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis), 21 hyperthyroidism (17 suffered from Graves’ disease), while 11 subjects were diagnosed with a primitive thyroid cancer. Papillary thyroid cancer was the most frequent histotype (n = 7, 63.63%), followed by medullary (n = 2, 18.18%) and follicular thyroid cancer (n = 1, 9.1%). Male gender was a protective factor for TDs development, especially for hypothyroidism (p < 0.001); age emerged as a variable associated with both hypothyroidism (p = 0.03) and thyroid cancer (p = 0.03), while CD4+ cell nadir <200 cell/mm3 was associated with symptomatic hyperthyroidism (p = 0.005). To conclude, symptomatic thyroid dysfunctions rate in well-treated HIV-infected patients is low. Age and gender are crucial elements in the onset of thyroid abnormalities, together with T CD4+ cell nadir. Interestingly, medullary thyroid cancer seems to be much more frequent in HIV-infected patients compared to the general population.

Abstract
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is the leading cause of acute hepatitis worldwide and can develop into chronic infection in immunocompromised patients, promoting the development of effective antiviral therapies. In this study, we performed a screening of a library containing over 1000 FDA-approved drugs. We have identified deptropine, a classical histamine H1 receptor antagonist used to treat asthmatic symptoms, as a potent inhibitor of HEV replication. The anti-HEV activity of deptropine appears dispensable of the histamine pathway, but requires the inhibition on nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activity. This further activates caspase mediated by receptor-interacting protein kinase 1 (RIPK1) to restrict HEV replication. Given deptropine being widely used in the clinic, our results warrant further evaluation of its anti-HEV efficacy in future clinical studies. Importantly, the discovery that NF-κB-RIPK1-caspase pathway interferes with HEV infection reveals new insight of HEV-host interactions.

Abstract
The role of EBV in thyroid cancer development and the patient's outcome is still unclear. Using nested-PCR, Moghoofei et al. reported a high incidence of a virus in thyroid tumor samples, different from our results, obtained by quantitative real-time PCR and confirmed by in situ hybridization. Because lymphocytes are the main reservoir of the virus and tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes are commonly observed in thyroid cancer, it is important to distinguish follicular cells infection from lymphoid tissue infection. The association between autoimmune diseases and thyroid cancer raises the importance of continuing to investigate the role of ubiquitous pathogens in thyroid tumorigenesis.

Abstract
Background: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated with many epithelial malignancies. A few reports on the association between EBV and thyroid tumorigenesis have been investigated. However, the conclusion is highly contradictory. We aimed to explore the role of EBV in thyroid nodule development and its clinical significance in a cohort from southern China. Method: We conducted a retrospective data abstraction study of patients who underwent thyroidectomy between December 2017 and June 2018. We retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathological parameters and EBV infection status (serological antibodies and in situ hybridization). Result: The cohort comprised 384 patients with newly diagnosed thyroid diseases, including 261 papillary thyroid carcinomas, 87 nodular goiters, 21 follicular adenomas, 12 follicular thyroid carcinomas, and 3 medullary thyroid carcinomas. Forty-two (10.9%) patients were identified as being serological antibody positive. However, there was no association between the clinicopathological parameters and serological antibody positivity. Additionally, none of the patients showed EBER expression in thyroid normal/cancer cell nuclei in in situ hybridization. Conclusion: In this study, no correlation between EBV and thyroid diseases was found in a cohort from southern China.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is currently the most common neoplasm diagnosed in women globally. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that human papillomavirus (HPV) infection may play a key role in invasiveness of breast cancer. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of HPV in patients with breast cancer and its possible association with cancer progression. METHODS Breast specimens were collected from 72 patients with breast cancer and 31 healthy controls. The presence of HPV was investigated by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and genotyping was performed for positive cases. We also evaluated the viral factors such as E6, E2, and E7 in HPV positive cases. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA (and Real-time PCR techniques were used to measure the expression level of anti-carcinogenic genes, such as p53, retinoblastoma (RB), breast and ovarian cancer susceptibility gene (BRCA1, BRCA2) and inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), transforming growth factor β (TGF-β), nuclear factor-kB (NF-kB), and different interleukins [ILs] (IL-1,IL6, and IL-17). RESULTS The HPV DNA was detected in 48.6% of breast cancer samples, whereas only 16.1% of controls were positive for HPV. We observed statistically significant differences between breast cancer patients and HPV presence (P = 0.003). HPV type 18 was the most prevalent virus genotype in patients. The expression of P53, RB, BRCA1, and BRCA2 were decreased in patients with HPV-positive breast cancer as compared to HPV-negative breast cancer and healthy controls. (All P-values were less than 0.05). The presence of the HPV was associated with increased inflammatory cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, IL-17, TGF-β, TNF-α, and NF-kB) and tumor progression. CONCLUSION The present study demonstrated that HPV infection may implicate in the development of some types of breast cancer.
