Human Health Risk Assessment of 16 Priority Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Soils of Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA

Photoreactivity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their mechanisms of phototoxicity against human immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT)

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous organic compounds in the environment. They are produced by many anthropogenic sources of different origins and are known for their toxicity, carcinogenicity, and mutagenicity. Sixteen PAHs have been identified as Priority Pollutants by the US EPA, which are often associated with particulate matter, facilitating their dispersion through air and water. When human skin is exposed to PAHs, it might occur simultaneously with solar radiation, potentially leading to phototoxic effects. Phototoxic mechanisms involve the generation of singlet oxygen and reactive oxygen species, DNA damage under specific light wavelengths, and the formation of charge transfer complexes. Despite predictions of phototoxic properties for some PAHs, there remains a paucity of experimental data. This study examined the photoreactive and phototoxic properties of the 16 PAHs enlisted in the Priority Pollutants list. Examined PAHs efficiently photogenerated singlet oxygen and superoxide anion in simple solutions. Furthermore, singlet oxygen phosphorescence was detected in PAH-loaded HaCaT cells. Phototoxicity against human keratinocytes was evaluated using various assays. At 5 nM concentration, examined PAHs significantly reduced viability and mitochondrial membrane potential of HaCaT cells following the exposure to solar simulated light. Analyzed compounds induced a substantial peroxidation of cellular proteins after light treatment. The results revealed that a majority of the examined PAHs exhibited substantial reactive oxygen species photoproduction under UVA and violet-blue light, with their phototoxicity corresponding to their photoreactive properties. These findings improve our comprehension of the interactions between PAHs and human skin cells under environmental conditions, particularly when exposed to solar radiation.

Assessing susceptibility for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon toxicity in an in vitro 3D respiratory model for asthma

There is increased emphasis on understanding cumulative risk from the combined effects of chemical and non-chemical stressors as it relates to public health. Recent animal studies have identified pulmonary inflammation as a possible modifier and risk factor for chemical toxicity in the lung after exposure to inhaled pollutants; however, little is known about specific interactions and potential mechanisms of action. In this study, primary human bronchial epithelial cells (HBEC) cultured in 3D at the air-liquid interface (ALI) are utilized as a physiologically relevant model to evaluate the effects of inflammation on toxicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), a class of contaminants generated from incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. Normal HBEC were differentiated in the presence of IL-13 for 14 days to induce a profibrotic phenotype similar to asthma. Fully differentiated normal and IL-13 phenotype HBEC were treated with benzo[a]pyrene (BAP; 1-40 μg/mL) or 1% DMSO/PBS vehicle at the ALI for 48 h. Cells were evaluated for cytotoxicity, barrier integrity, and transcriptional biomarkers of chemical metabolism and inflammation by quantitative PCR. Cells with the IL-13 phenotype treated with BAP result in significantly (p < 0.05) decreased barrier integrity, less than 50% compared to normal cells. The effect of BAP in the IL-13 phenotype was more apparent when evaluating transcriptional biomarkers of barrier integrity in addition to markers of mucus production, goblet cell hyperplasia, type 2 asthmatic inflammation and chemical metabolism, which all resulted in dose-dependent changes (p < 0.05) in the presence of BAP. Additionally, RNA sequencing data showed that the HBEC with the IL-13 phenotype may have increased potential for uncontrolled proliferation and decreased capacity for immune response after BAP exposure compared to normal phenotype HBEC. These data are the first to evaluate the role of combined environmental factors associated with inflammation from pre-existing disease and PAH exposure on pulmonary toxicity in a physiologically relevant human in vitro model.

Detection and treatment of mono and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollutants in aqueous environments based on electrochemical technology: recent advances

Mono and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are widely distributed and severely pollute the aqueous environment due to natural and human activities, particularly human activity. It is crucial to identify and address them in order to reduce the dangers and threats they pose to biological processes and ecosystems. In the fields of sensor detection and water treatment, electrochemistry plays a crucial role as a trustworthy and environmentally friendly technology. In order to accomplish trace detection while enhancing detection accuracy and precision, researchers have created and studied sensors using a range of materials based on electrochemical processes, and their results have demonstrated good performance. One cannot overlook the challenges associated with treating aromatic pollutants, including mono and polycyclic. Much work has been done and good progress has been achieved in order to address these challenges. This study discusses the mono and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon sensor detection and electrochemical treatment technologies for contaminants in the aqueous environment. Additionally mentioned are the sources, distribution, risks, hazards, and problems in the removal of pollutants. The obstacles to be overcome and the future development plans of the field are then suggested by summarizing and assessing the research findings of the researchers.

Assessment of potential ecological risk for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in urban soils with high level of atmospheric particulate matter concentration

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are known to be representative carcinogenic environmental pollutants with high toxicity. However, information on the potential ecological and environmental risks of PAH contamination in soil remains scarce. Thus, this study was evaluated the potential ecological risks of PAHs in soils of five Korean areas (Gunsan (GS), Gwangju, Yeongnam, Busan, and Gangwon) using organic carbon (OC)-normalized analysis, mean effect range-median quotient (M-ERM-Q), toxic equivalent quantity (TEQ) analysis, and risk quotient (RQ) derived by the species sensitivity distribution model. In this study, atmospheric particulate matter has a significant effect on soil pollution in GS through the presence of hopanes and the similar pattern of PAHs in soil and atmospheric PAHs. From analysis of source identification, combustion sources in soils of GS were important PAH sources. For PAHs in soils of GS, the OC-normalized analysis, M-ERM-Q, and TEQ analysis have 26.78 × 105 ng/g-OC, 0.218, and 49.72, respectively. Therefore, the potential ecological risk assessment results showed that GS had moderate-high ecological risk and moderate-high carcinogenic risk, whereas the other regions had low ecological risk and low-moderate carcinogenic risk. The risk level (M-ERM-Q) of PAH contamination in GS was similar to that in Changchun and Xiangxi Bay in China. The Port Harcourt City in Nigeria for PAH has the highest risk (M-ERM-Q = 4.02 and TEQ = 7923). Especially, compared to China (RQPhe =0.025 and 0.05), and Nigeria (0.059), phenanthrene showed the highest ecological risk in Korea (0.001-0.18). Korea should focus on controlling the release of PAHs originating from the PM in GS.

Efficiency comparison of extraction methods for the determination of 11 of the 16 USEPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water matrices: Sources of origin and ecological risk assessment

As a result of their toxicity, ease of analysis, and environmental occurrence, 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were chosen as priority pollutants by the USEPA. Few studies have been conducted to assess the levels of PAHs in South Africa, especially KwaZulu Natal province, and no work has been done in the selected study area. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the levels of such PAHs in river water and wastewater samples and evaluate their source and ecological risk. The status of these PAHs in the South African environment has not been investigated fully, which is a gap this study intended to fill. The PAHs were determined using solid-phase extraction (SPE) and dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) methods. The optimization and validation of these methods indicated that both methods can be used for the extraction of PAHs in liquid samples. This is because of the acceptable %recovery of 72.1%-118% for SPE and 70.7%-88.4% for DLLME with a %RSD less than 10% (indicating high precision) that was obtained. The limit of detection and limit of quantification ranged from 5.0 to 18 ng/L and 6.0-20 ng/L for SPE and from 10 to 44 ng/L and 11 to 63 ng/L for DLLME. These results demonstrated that SPE is more accurate and sensitive than DLLME, which was also confirmed by statistical analysis. The PAH concentration levels ranged from not detected (nd) to 1046 ng/L in river water and nd to 778 ng/L in wastewater samples with naphthalene demonstrating dominance over all other PAHs in both water matrices. Genome-resolved metagenomics of Venice Lagoon surface sediment bacteria reveals high biosynthetic potential and metabolic plasticity as successful strategies in an impacted environment

Bacteria living in sediments play essential roles in marine ecosystems and deeper insights into the ecology and biogeochemistry of these largely unexplored organisms can be obtained from 'omics' approaches. Here, we characterized metagenome-assembled-genomes (MAGs) from the surface sediment microbes of the Venice Lagoon (northern Adriatic Sea) in distinct sub-basins exposed to various natural and anthropogenic pressures. MAGs were explored for biodiversity, major marine metabolic processes, anthropogenic activity-related functions, adaptations at the microscale, and biosynthetic gene clusters. Starting from 126 MAGs, a non-redundant dataset of 58 was compiled, the majority of which (35) belonged to (Alpha- and Gamma-) Proteobacteria. Within the broad microbial metabolic repertoire (including C, N, and S metabolisms) the potential to live without oxygen emerged as one of the most important features. Mixotrophy was also found as a successful lifestyle. Cluster analysis showed that different MAGs encoded the same metabolic patterns (e.g., C fixation, sulfate oxidation) thus suggesting metabolic redundancy. Antibiotic and toxic compounds resistance genes were coupled, a condition that could promote the spreading of these genetic traits. MAGs showed a high biosynthetic potential related to antimicrobial and biotechnological classes and to organism defense and interactions as well as adaptive strategies for micronutrient uptake and cellular detoxification. Our results highlighted that bacteria living in an impacted environment, such as the surface sediments of the Venice Lagoon, may benefit from metabolic plasticity as well as from the synthesis of a wide array of secondary metabolites, promoting ecosystem resilience and stability toward environmental pressures.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Wildfire Smoke Accumulate on Indoor Materials and Create Postsmoke Event Exposure Pathways

Wildfire smoke contains PAHs that, after infiltrating indoors, accumulate on indoor materials through particle deposition and partitioning from air. We report the magnitude and persistence of select surface associated PAHs on three common indoor materials: glass, cotton, and mechanical air filter media. Materials were loaded with PAHs through both spiking with standards and exposure to a wildfire smoke proxy. Loaded materials were aged indoors over ∼4 months to determine PAH persistence. For materials spiked with standards, total PAH decay rates were 0.010 ± 0.002, 0.025 ± 0.005, and 0.051 ± 0.009 day-1, for mechanical air filter media, glass, and cotton, respectively. PAH decay on smoke-exposed samples is consistent with that predicated by decay constants from spiked materials. Decay curves of smoke loaded samples show that PAH surface concentrations are elevated above background for ∼40 days after the smoke clears. Cleaning processes efficiently remove PAHs, with reductions of 71% and 62% after cleaning smoke-exposed glass with ethanol and a commercial cleaner, respectively. Laundering smoke-exposed cotton in a washing machine and heated drying removed 48% of PAHs. An exposure assessment indicates that both inhalation and dermal PAH exposure pathways may be relevant following wildfire smoke events.

Understanding the effective breakdown of PAH s in water through the use of g-C3N4-Ag-Cu-Ni nanocomposites

The research work aimed to explore the suitability of using a novel g- C3N4-Ag-Cu-Ni nanocomposite for the simultaneous degradation of pyrene in wastewater. The outcome revealed that the g- C3N4 phase was successfully fabricated on the g-C3N4-based compound, and the existence of the g- C3N4-based compound beneficially stabilized the Ag-Cu-Ni particles. The g- C3N4-Ag-Cu-Ni nanocomposite demonstrated excellent performance in pyrene degradation under various conditions. The degradation of pyrene increased with a rise in the dosage of g- C3N4-Ag-Cu-Ni. These findings indicate that the g- C3N4-Ag-Cu-Ni nanocomposite could be a promising material for water purification, especially for the simultaneous photocatalytic and antimicrobial treatment of contaminated water bodies. The study provides a helpful guide for future research in this field.

Microalgae mediated bioremediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: Strategies, advancement and regulations

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are pervasive in the atmosphere and are one of the emerging pollutants that cause harmful effects in living systems. There are some natural and anthropogenic sources that can produce PAHs in an uncontrolled way. Several health hazards associated with PAHs like abnormality in the reproductive system, endocrine system as well as immune system have been explained. The mutagenic or carcinogenic effects of hydrocarbons in living systems including algae, vertebrates and invertebrates have been discussed. For controlling PAHs, biodegradation has been suggested as an effective and eco-friendly process. Microalgae-based biosorption and biodegradation resulted in the removal of toxic contaminants. Microalgae both in unialgal form and in consortium (with bacteria or fungi) performed good results in bioaccumulation and biodegradation. In the present review, we highlighted the general information about the PAHs, conventional versus advanced technology for removal. In addition microalgae based removal and toxicity is discussed. Furthermore this work provides an idea on modern scientific applications like genetic and metabolic engineering, nanomaterials-based technologies, artificial neural network (ANN), machine learning (ML) etc. As rapid and effective methods for bioremediation of PAHs. With several pros and cons, biological treatments using microalgae are found to be better for PAH removal than any other conventional technologies.

Evaluation of amino acid profile by targeted metabolomics in the eukaryotic model under exposure of benzo[a]pyrene as the exclusive stressor

Amino acids (AAs) are a class of important metabolites in metabolomics methodology that investigates metabolite changes in a cell, tissue, or organism for early diagnosis of diseases. Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is considered a priority contaminant by different environmental control agencies because it is a proven carcinogenic compound for humans. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the BaP interference in the metabolism of amino acids. In this work, a new amino acid extraction procedure (derivatized with propyl chloroformate/propanol) using functionalized magnetic carbon nanotubes was developed and optimized. A hybrid nanotube was used followed by desorption without heating, and excellent extraction of analytes was obtained. After exposure of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the BaP concentration of 25.0 μmol L-1 caused changes in cell viability, indicating metabolic changes. A fast and efficient GC/MS method using a Phenomenex ZB-AAA column was optimized, enabling the determination of 16 AAs in yeasts exposed or not to BaP. A comparison of AA concentrations obtained in the two experimental groups showed that glycine (Gly), serine (Ser), phenylalanine (Phe), proline (Pro), asparagine (Asn), aspartic acid (Asp), glutamic acid (Glu), tyrosine (Tyr), and leucine (Leu) statistically differentiated, after subsequent application of ANOVA with Bonferroni post-hoc test, with a confidence level of 95%. This amino acid pathway analysis confirmed previous studies that revealed the potential of these AAs as toxicity biomarker candidates.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in aquatic ecosystem exposed to the 2020 Baghjan oil spill in upper Assam, India: Short-term toxicity and ecological risk assessment

This study focuses on the short-term contamination and associated risks arising from the release of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) due to the 2020 Baghjan oil blowout in upper Assam, India. Shortly after the Baghjan oil blowout, samples were collected from water, sediment, and fish species and examined for PAHs contents. The results of the analysis revealed ΣPAHs concentrations ranged between 0.21-691.31 μg L-1 (water); 37.6-395.8 μg Kg-1 (sediment); 104.3-7829.6 μg Kg-1 (fish). The prevalence of 3-4 ring low molecular weight PAHs compounds in water (87.17%), sediment (100%), and fish samples (93.17%) validate the petrogenic source of origin (oil spill). The geographic vicinity of the oil blowout is rich in wildlife; thus, leading to a significant mass mortality of several eco-sensitive species like fish, plants, microbes, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals including the Gangetic River dolphin. The initial ecological risk assessment suggested moderate to high-risk values (RQ >1) of majority PAHs concerning fish, daphnia, and algae species. This study highlights the need for recognizing the potential for short-term exposure to local species. To safeguard local ecosystems from potential future environmental disasters, it is imperative for the government to adopt a precautionary strategy.

Contamination in mangrove ecosystems: A synthesis of literature reviews across multiple contaminant categories

Mangrove forests are exposed to diverse ocean-sourced and land-based contaminants, yet mangrove contamination research lags. We synthesize existing data and identify major gaps in research on five classes of mangrove contaminants: trace metals, persistent organic pollutants, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, microplastics, and pharmaceuticals and personal care products. Research is concentrated in Asia, neglected in Africa and the Americas; higher concentrations are correlated with waste water treatment plants, industry, and urbanized landscapes. Trace metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, frequently at concentrations below regulatory thresholds, may bioconcentrate in fauna, whereas persistent organic pollutants were at levels potentially harmful to biota through short- or long-term exposure. Microplastics were at variable levels, yet lack regulatory and ecotoxicological thresholds. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products received minimal research despite biological activity at small concentrations. Given potential synergistic effects, multi-contaminant research, increased monitoring of multiple contaminant classes, and increased public outreach and involvement are needed.

High-temperature electrothermal remediation of multi-pollutants in soil

Soil contamination is an environmental issue due to increasing anthropogenic activities. Existing processes for soil remediation suffer from long treatment time and lack generality because of different sources, occurrences, and properties of pollutants. Here, we report a high-temperature electrothermal process for rapid, water-free remediation of multiple pollutants in soil. The temperature of contaminated soil with carbon additives ramps up to 1000 to 3000 °C as needed within seconds via pulsed direct current input, enabling the vaporization of heavy metals like Cd, Hg, Pb, Co, Ni, and Cu, and graphitization of persistent organic pollutants like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The rapid treatment retains soil mineral constituents while increases infiltration rate and exchangeable nutrient supply, leading to soil fertilization and improved germination rates. We propose strategies for upscaling and field applications. Techno-economic analysis indicates the process holds the potential for being more energy-efficient and cost-effective compared to soil washing or thermal desorption.

The Solent Strait: Water quality trends within a heavily trafficked marine environment, 2000 to 2020

This study presents an important long-term historical analysis of water quality in an internationally crucial waterway (the Solent, Hampshire, UK), in the context of increasing adoption of open-loop Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems by shipping. The pollutants studied were acidification (pH), zinc, and benzo [a] pyrene, alongside temperature. We compared baseline sites to locations likely to be impacted by pollution. The Solent's average water temperature is slightly increasing, with temperatures at wastewater sites significantly higher. Acidification suggests a complex story, with a highly significant small overall increase in pH during the study period but significantly different values at wastewater and port sites. Zn concentrations have significantly reduced but increased in enclosed waters such as marinas. BaP showed no long-term trend with values at marinas significantly and consistently higher. The findings provide valuable long-term background data and insights that can feed into the upcoming review of the European Union's Marine Strategy Framework Directive and ongoing discussions about the regulation of, and future monitoring and management strategies for coastal/marine waterways.

Association of multi-criteria derived air toxics hazard score with lung cancer incidence in a major metropolitan area

Background

Lung cancer remains a major health problem world-wide. Environmental exposure to lung cancer carcinogens can affect lung cancer incidence. We investigated the association between lung cancer incidence and an air toxics hazard score of environmental carcinogen exposures derived previously under the exposome concept.

Methods

Lung cancer cases diagnosed in Philadelphia and the surrounding counties between 2008 and 2017 were identified from the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry. Age-adjusted incidence rates at the ZIP code level were calculated based on the residential address at diagnosis. The air toxics hazard score, an aggregate measure for lung cancer carcinogen exposures, was derived using the criteria of toxicity, persistence, and occurrence. Areas with high incidence or hazard score were identified. Spatial autoregressive models were fitted to evaluate the association, with and without adjusting for confounders. Stratified analysis by smoking prevalence was performed to examine potential interactions.

Results

We observed significantly higher age-adjusted incidence rates in ZIP codes that had higher air toxics hazard score values after controlling for demographic variables, smoking prevalence, and proximity to major highways. Analyzes stratified by smoking prevalence suggested that exposure to environmental lung carcinogens had a larger effect on cancer incidence in locations with higher smoking prevalence.

Conclusion

The positive association between the multi-criteria derived air toxics hazard score and lung cancer incidence provides the initial evidence to validate the hazard score as an aggregate measure of carcinogenic exposures in the environment. The hazard score can be used to supplement the existing risk factors in identifying high risk individuals. Communities with higher incidence/hazard score may benefit from greater awareness of lung cancer risk factors and targeted screening programs.

Measurement of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) on Indoor Materials: Method Development

Wildfire smoke penetrates indoors, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in smoke may accumulate on indoor materials. We developed two approaches for measuring PAHs on common indoor materials: (1) solvent-soaked wiping of solid materials (glass and drywall) and (2) direct extraction of porous/fleecy materials (mechanical air filter media and cotton sheets). Samples are extracted by sonication in dichloromethane and analyzed with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Extraction recoveries range from 50-83% for surrogate standards and for PAHs recovered from direct application to isopropanol-soaked wipes, in line with prior studies. We evaluate our methods with a total recovery metric, defined as the sampling and extraction recovery of PAHs from a test material spiked with known PAH mass. Total recovery is higher for "heavy" PAHs (HPAHs, 4 or more aromatic rings) than for "light" PAHs (LPAHs, 2-3 aromatic rings). For glass, the total recovery range is 44-77% for HPAHs and 0-30% for LPAHs. Total recoveries from painted drywall are <20% for all PAHs tested. For filter media and cotton, total recoveries of HPAHs are 37-67 and 19-57%, respectively. These data show acceptable HPAH total recovery on glass, cotton, and filter media; total recovery of LPAHs may be unacceptably low for indoor materials using methods developed here. Our data also indicate that extraction recovery of surrogate standards may overestimate the total recovery of PAHs from glass using solvent wipe sampling. The developed method enables future studies of accumulation of PAHs indoors, including potential longer-term exposure derived from contaminated indoor surfaces.

Status of different anthropogenic organic pollutants accumulated in sediments from Olt River Basin, Romania: From distribution and sources to risk assessment

Some organic pollutants including organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been banned from production worldwide, but due to their toxicity and persistence are still of concern. Also, unintentional by-products of combustion and industrial processes such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), represent a permanent threat to the safety of the environment and the population. In this study, surface sediment samples from the middle and lower Olt River Basin (ORB), Romania, including dams, the main tributaries and the confluence with Danube River were collected during seasonal sampling campaigns in 2019 and analyzed for 13 OCPs, 12 PCBs and 15 PAHs in order to evaluate the impact of the main anthropogenic activities in the area (industrial activities and agriculture) and the ecological status of the ORB. The registered levels of OCPs, PCBs and PAHs in surface sediments varied from low to significantly polluted environments, indicating a clear spatial distribution between sites based on concentrations and congener profiles correlated with the influence of anthropogenic activities in the surrounding area. Based on some molecular diagnostic ratio and multivariate statistical analysis, both non-point sources and point sources deposition by surface runoff or atmospheric deposition were identified. Overall, the contamination profile of the study area reveals significant amounts of organochlorine compounds, resulting from the industrial production of chlorinated products, including lindane, but also from the long-term agricultural use of both HCHs and DDTs, more than half of the sites having levels that pose a potential risk for benthic organisms. Therefore, levels of POPs in the hot-spots sampling locations raise numerous concerns about the safety of the environment and the population in the region, requiring immediate actions.

Monitoring of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons emitted from kerosene fuel burning and assessment of health risks among women in selected rural and urban households of South India

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are well-known hazardous substances; nevertheless, research on their exposure and health concerns associated with kerosene fuel emissions is limited. In this study, PAH (combined gaseous and particle phase) monitoring was carried out in the kitchen and living room in selected households. Personal exposure and cooking time monitoring were also carried out, simultaneously. The study's findings revealed that BaP, BA, BbF, and Nap were the most prevalent PAHs in both the summer and winter seasons, regardless of urban or rural households. The estimated values of average incremental lifetime cancer risks were found to be greater than the USEPA level, i.e., 1 × 10^-6, in both urban and rural households, regardless of seasonal fluctuation. In both seasons, the non-carcinogenic risk for developmental and reproductive effects was higher in rural women than in urban women, and in case of developmental risk it showed greater than unity (rural: 1.11 and urban 1.03) in the winter season. On the other hand, Monte Carlo simulation model revealed that concentrations of PAHs (97.1% and 97.5%) and exposure duration (51.7% and 56.7%) were the most sensitive factors contributed for health risk estimations for urban and rural area in both seasons, respectively. Furthermore, the results clearly showed that women who were using kerosene for cooking were at a greater risk of acquiring both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health consequences from PAH exposure from kerosene cookstoves. It was recommended that they should utilize clean fuel, either by using LPG under the PMUY scheme or by using electricity/solar power to reduce health risks for better health.

Long-term monitoring and modeling of PAHs in capped sediments at the Grand Calumet River

The assessment of a cap for remediation of sediments requires long-term monitoring because of the slow migration of contaminants in porous media. In this study, coring and passive sampling tools were used to assess the transport and degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in an amended cap (sand + Organoclay® PM-199) in the Grand Calumet River (Indiana, USA) during four sampling events from 2012 to 2019. Measurements of three PAHs (phenanthrene (Phe), pyrene (Pyr) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), representing low, medium, and high molecular weight compounds, respectively) showed a difference of at least two orders of magnitude between bulk concentrations in the native sediments and the remediation cap. Averages of pore water measurements also showed lower levels in the cap respective to the native sediments by a factor of at least 7 for Phe and 3 for Pyr. In addition, between the baseline (BL), which corresponds to observations from 2012 to 2014, and the measurements in 2019, there was a decrease in depth-averaged pore water concentrations of Phe (C₂₀₁₉/C_BL=0.20_-0.07^+0.12 in sediments and 0.27_-0.10^+0.15 in cap) and Pyr (C₂₀₁₉/C_BL=0.47_-0.12^+0.16 in sediments and 0.71_-0.20^+0.28 in the cap). In the case of BaP in pore water, no change was observed in native sediments (C₂₀₁₉/C_BL=1.0_-0.24^+0.32) and there was an increase in the cap (C₂₀₁₉/C_BL=2.0_-0.54^+0.72). Inorganic anions and estimates of pore water velocity along with measurements of PAHs were used to model the fate and transport of contaminants. The modeling suggested that degradation of Phe (t_1/2=1.12_-0.11^+0.16 years) and Pyr (t_1/2=5.34_-1.8^+5.3 years) in the cap is faster than migration, thus the cap is expected to be protective of the sediment-water interface indefinitely for these constituents. No degradation was noted in BaP and the contaminant is expected to reach equilibrium in the capping layer over approximately 100 years if there exists sufficient mass of BaP in the sediments and there is no deposition of clean sediment at the surface.

Environmental Impacts of Hurricane Harvey on the Neches-Brakes Bayou River System in Beaumont, Texas

Hurricane Harvey caused unprecedented floods across large regions of Southeast Texas resulting in several infrastructural issues. One of the notable failures was of a drinking water source pump in Beaumont, Texas, that necessitated the emergency use of a temporary pump intake station in the Neches River system. This study examines the environmental consequences of Harvey-induced flooding in the Neches River system by focusing on sensitive locations, including a Superfund site (International Creosoting, IC) and adjacent to the temporary pump intake. Post-Harvey water samples showed greater than two orders of magnitude increase in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) about 3 weeks after Harvey (350-420 µg L^-1 on September 22) at locations adjacent to IC and the temporary water pump intake, which by that time was no longer in use. The organic carbon normalized PAH measurements in the heavily contaminated water samples from both locations (~3% w/w) agreed well with surficial soil/sediment samples collected at the east bank adjacent to the IC site (0.7-5.2% w/w). Furthermore, molecular diagnostic ratios of select PAHs supported the contribution of PAHs from the IC site into the surface waters. PAH measurements were consistent with sediment resuspension by floodwaters that were initially diluted by large flows but became more significant as the flood subsided. Overall, our data showed that flooding can cause high levels of contamination weeks after the initial flooding event, with potential for cascading risks through mobilization of pollutants from source areas and impacts to critical water infrastructure systems.

Comparative analysis of remediation efficiency and ultrastructural translocalization of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Medicago sativa, Helianthus annuus, and Tagetes erecta

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are semi-volatile anthropogenic contaminants that can damage soil fertility and threaten the environment due to their hazardous effects on various ecological parameters. The experimental objective was divided into two parts because PAHs are always present in mixtures. The toxicity of anthracene, phenanthrene, pyrene, and fluoranthene was examined and investigated the potential of three phytoremediator plants species viz Tagetes erecta, Helianthus annuus, and Medicago sativa for remediation and translocation of individual PAH. PAHs were shown to have inhibitory or stimulating effects on growth, antioxidant properties, and impact on the structure of plant cells. The result showed that M. sativa significantly enhances the removal rate of PAHs in the soil. The dissipation rate reached 96.2% in M. sativa planted soil, followed by H. annuus and T. erecta. Among the plant species, M. sativa exhibited the highest root and shoot concentrations (314.37 and 169.55 mg kg-1), while the lowest concentration was 187.56 and 76.60 mg kg-1 in T. erecta. SEM-EDX and fluorescence micrographs confirmed that pyrene altered plant tissue's ultrastructure and cell viability and was found to be the most toxic and resistant. M. sativa was proven to be the most effective plant for the mitigation of PAHs.

Fine and ultrafine particle- and gas-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons affecting southern Thailand air quality during transboundary haze and potential health effects

Distribution of PM_0.1, PM₁ and PM_2.5 particle- and gas-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during the 2019 normal, partial and strong haze periods at a background location in southern Thailand were investigated to understand the behaviors and carcinogenic risks. PM₁ was the predominant component, during partial and strong haze periods, accounting for 45.1% and 52.9% of total suspended particulate matter, respectively, while during normal period the contribution was only 34.0%. PM_0.1 concentrations, during the strong haze period, were approximately 2 times higher than those during the normal period. Substantially increased levels of particle-PAHs for PM_0.1, PM₁ and PM_2.5 were observed during strong haze period, about 3, 5 and 6 times higher than those during normal period. Gas-PAH concentrations were 10 to 36 times higher than those of particle-PAHs for PM_2.5. Average total Benzo[a]Pyrene Toxic Equivalency Quotients (BaP-TEQ) in PM_0.1, PM₁ and PM_2.5 during haze periods were about 2-6 times higher than in the normal period. The total accumulated Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risks (ILCRs) in PM_0.1, PM₁ and PM_2.5 for all the age-specific groups during the haze effected scenario were approximately 1.5 times higher than those in non-haze scenario, indicating a higher potential carcinogenic risk. These observations suggest PM_0.1, PM₁ and PM_2.5 were the significant sources of carcinogenic aerosols and were significantly affected by transboundary haze from peatland fires. This leads to an increase in the volume of smoke aerosol, exerting a significant impact on air quality in southern Thailand, as well as many other countries in lower southeast Asia.

Computational chromatography: A machine learning strategy for demixing individual chemical components in complex mixtures

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) holds exceptional promise as a streamlined chemical detection strategy for biological and environmental contaminants compared with current laboratory methods. Priority pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), detectable in water and soil worldwide and known to induce multiple adverse health effects upon human exposure, are typically found in multicomponent mixtures. By combining the molecular fingerprinting capabilities of SERS with the signal separation and detection capabilities of machine learning (ML), we examine whether individual PAHs can be identified through an analysis of the SERS spectra of multicomponent PAH mixtures. We have developed an unsupervised ML method we call Characteristic Peak Extraction, a dimensionality reduction algorithm that extracts characteristic SERS peaks based on counts of detected peaks of the mixture. By analyzing the SERS spectra of two-component and four-component PAH mixtures where the concentration ratios of the various components vary, this algorithm is able to extract the spectra of each unknown component in the mixture of unknowns, which is then subsequently identified against a SERS spectral library of PAHs. Combining the molecular fingerprinting capabilities of SERS with the signal separation and detection capabilities of ML, this effort is a step toward the computational demixing of unknown chemical components occurring in complex multicomponent mixtures.

Leveraging Multiple Data Streams for Prioritization of Mixtures for Hazard Characterization

There is a growing need to establish alternative approaches for mixture safety assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Due to limitations with current component-based approaches, and the lack of established methods for using whole mixtures, a promising alternative is to use sufficiently similar mixtures; although, an established framework is lacking. In this study, several approaches are explored to form sufficiently similar mixtures. Multiple data streams including environmental concentrations and empirically and predicted toxicity data for cancer and non-cancer endpoints were used to prioritize chemical components for mixture formations. Air samplers were analyzed for unsubstituted and alkylated PAHs. A synthetic mixture of identified PAHs was created (Creosote-Fire Mix). Existing toxicity values and chemical concentrations were incorporated to identify hazardous components in the Creosote-Fire Mix. Sufficiently similar mixtures of the Creosote-Fire Mix were formed based on (1) relative abundance; (2) toxicity values; and (3) a combination approach incorporating toxicity and abundance. Hazard characterization of these mixtures was performed using high-throughput screening in primary normal human bronchial epithelium (NHBE) and zebrafish. Differences in chemical composition and potency were observed between mixture formation approaches. The toxicity-based approach (Tox Mix) was the most potent mixture in both models. The combination approach (Weighted-Tox Mix) was determined to be the ideal approach due its ability to prioritize chemicals with high exposure and hazard potential.

Hibiscus sabdariffa Extract Protects HaCaT Cells against Phenanthrene-Induced Toxicity through the Regulation of Constitutive Androstane Receptor/Pregnane X Receptor Pathway

Phenanthrene (Phe) exposure is associated with skin ageing, cardiotoxicity and developmental defects. Here, we investigated the mode of Phe toxicity in human keratinocytes (HaCaT cells) and the attenuation of toxicity on pre-treatment (6 h) with ethanol extract of Hibiscus sabdariffa calyxes (HS). Cell viability, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) alteration, changes in the transcriptional activity of selected genes involved in phase I and II metabolism, antioxidant response and gluconeogenesis, western blot and docking studies were performed to determine the protective effect of HS against Phe. Phe (250 μM) induced cytotoxicity in HaCaT cells through AhR-independent, CAR/PXR/RXR-mediated activation of CYP1A1 and the subsequent alterations in phase I and II metabolism genes. Further, CYP1A1 activation by Phe induced ROS generation, reduced ΔΨm and modulated antioxidant response, phase II metabolism and gluconeogenesis-related gene expression. However, pre-treatment with HS extract restored the pathological changes observed upon Phe exposure through CYP1A1 inhibition. Docking studies showed the site-specific activation of PXR and CAR by Phe and inhibition of CYP1A1 and CYP3A4 by the bioactive compounds of HS similar to that of the positive controls tested. Our results conclude that HS extract can attenuate Phe-induced toxicity in HaCaT cells through CAR/PXR/RXR mediated inhibition of CYP1A1.

Atmospheric PAHs in rural, urban, industrial and beach locations in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina: sources and health risk assessment

The first atmospheric PAHs levels and associated inhalation cancer risk were assessed over southwest Buenos Aires region by deploying PUF disk PAS samplers. Eight sampling location included coastal zones, touristic beaches, and rural inland areas were considered. PUF disks were fortified with surrogate standards and extracted by automated Soxhlet prior to GC-MS analysis. Σ₁₆ PAHs ranged from 1.13 to 44.5 ng m^-3 (10.3 ± 9.8), while urban locations showed up to 10 times higher PAH levels than rural or beach locations. Direct sources of PAHs, such as intensive vehicle traffic, heating, and general combustion activities, were identified. PAHs with four to six rings (46.62%) were predominantly Flt, Pyr, BbF, and BkF, and carcinogenic risk was expressed by BaP (0.10 ± 0.07 ng m^-3) and BaPTEQs (0.26 ± 0.22 ng m^-3). Inhalation ECR (2.23E-5, WHO) presented the lowest risk at beach locations. Molecular ratios and PCA showed a strong dominance in pyrolytic sources, such as biomass and coal combustion, with a particular signature in fires at inland locations. Overall, this study demonstrated that PUF disk passive air sampling provided a sound and simple approach for tracking air PAHs, their sources and public health risks, bringing a cost-effective tool for pollution control measures, even at small and remote towns. This is particularly relevant in extensive countries with medium or low income, such as Argentina.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the Siberian Arctic seas sediments

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are among the main persistent organic pollutants in the Arcticwhich enter the polar region from lower latitudes by air transport and ocean currents and accumulate in marine sediments. This work represents the first study in 25 years of the least studied and hard-to-reach areas of Siberian arctic seas. Sixteen priority PAHs as well as 1- and 2-methylnaphthalenes were analyzed by gas chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry in the twenty-four sediment samples taken from Kara, Laptev and East Siberian Seas in October 2020. The obtained sum concentrations ranged from 31 to 223 ng/ g with the greatest contribution of phenanthrene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, benzo[k]fluoranthene, as well as naphthalene and its methyl derivatives while the greatest PAH levels were observed in Laptev Sea. No correlations between sum PAH concentration, total organic carbon and black carbon contents were found. The toxic equivalent in benzo[a]pyrene units was from 2.2-18.2 ng/ g that shows the general safe environmental situation in the region. The overall PAH level is comparable with the data obtained in 1990s which indicates a long-term persistence of pollution despite an overall decline in global PAH emissions. The main sources of PAHs involve mainly coal/biomass and liquid fuel combustion with weaker contribution of petroleum sources.

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons biodegradation using mix culture of microorganisms from sewage waste sludge: application of artificial neural network modelling

PURPOSE

In this study, we aimed to examine the tolerance of mixed culture of microorganisms isolated from sewage waste sludge to degrade high concentrations of polyaromatic hydrocarbons, naphthalene, and phenanthrene. The performance of the artificial neural network (ANN) model to predict and simulate the experimental biodegradation results was investigated.

METHODS

The mixed culture of microorganisms was isolated from sewage waste sludge and adopted to biodegrade naphthalene and phenanthrene at different concentrations (100-1000mg/L). Sewage waste sludge obtained from wastewater treatment plants. A three-layer feed-forward network with a sigmoid transfer function (logsig) at the hidden layer, a linear transfer function (purelin) at the output layer, and a backpropagation training algorithm was used to set the ANN model.

RESULTS

The results of this study show that naphthalene at concentrations of 100, 300, 700, and 1000 mg/L was depleted after incubation with the mixed culture for 6, 8, 14, and 16 days, respectively. For phenanthrene, depletion of 100, 300, 600, and 1000 mg/L was achieved after 8, 11, 16, and 19 days of incubation, respectively. A high correlation coefficient of 99.5% between the predicted and the experimental results were obtained by using the AAN model.

CONCLUSION

The results indicated that the mixed culture of microorganisms from sewage waste sludge could effectively consume naphthalene and phenanthrene as carbon and energy sources. Also, the ANN model could efficiently predict the experimental results for biodegradation treatment.

Longitudinal relationships of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons exposure and genetic susceptibility with blood lipid profiles

OBJECTIVE

We aim to analyze the effects of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) exposure and genetic predisposition on blood lipid through a longitudinal epidemiological study.

METHODS

We enrolled 4,356 observations who participated at baseline (n = 2,435) and 6-year follow-up (n = 1,921) from Wuhan-Zhuhai cohort. Ten urinary PAHs metabolites and blood lipid (i.e., total cholesterol [TC], triglycerides [TG], low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-C], and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-C]) were measured at both baseline and follow-up. The polygenic risk scores (PRS) of blood lipid were constructed by the corresponding genome-wide association studies. Linear mixed models were fit to identify associations between urinary PAHs metabolites, blood lipid, and lipid-PRSs in the repeated-measure analysis. Besides, longitudinal relationships of blood lipid with urinary PAHs metabolites and respective lipid-PRSs were examined by using linear regression models.

RESULTS

Compared with subjects who had persistently low urinary total hydroxyphenanthrene (ΣOHPh), those with persistently high levels had an average increase of 0.137 mmol/l for TC and 0.129 mmol/l for LDL-C over 6 years. Each 1-unit increase of TC-, TG-, LDL-C-, and HDL-C-specific PRS were associated with an average increase of 0.438 mmol/l for TC, 0.264 mmol/l for TG, 0.198 mmol/l for LDL-C, and 0.043 mmol/l for HDL-C over 6 years, respectively. Compared with subjects who had low genetic risk and persistently low ΣOHPh, subjects with high LDL-specific PRS and persistently high ΣOHPh had an average increase of 0.652 mmol/l for LDL-C.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results suggest that high-level ΣOHPh exposure is associated with an average increase of LDL-C over 6 years, and those relationships can be aggravated by a higher LDL-C-genetic risk. No significant relationships were observed between other PAHs metabolites (including hydroxynaphthalene, hydroxyfluorene, and hydroxypyrene) and blood lipid changes over 6 years. Our findings emphasize the importance of preventing PAHs exposure, particularly among those with a higher genetic predisposition of hyperlipidemia.

Genomic Evidence for the Recycling of Complex Organic Carbon by Novel Thermoplasmatota Clades in Deep-Sea Sediments

Thermoplasmatota have been widely reported in a variety of ecosystems, but their distribution and ecological role in marine sediments are still elusive. Here, we obtained four draft genomes affiliated with the former RBG-16-68-12 clade, which is now considered a new order, “Candidatus Yaplasmales,” of the Thermoplasmatota phylum in sediments from the South China Sea. The phylogenetic trees based on the 16S rRNA genes and draft genomes showed that “Ca. Yaplasmales” archaea are composed of three clades: A, B, and C. Among them, clades A and B are abundantly distributed (up to 10.86%) in the marine anoxic sediment layers (>10-cm depth) of six of eight cores from 1,200- to 3,400-m depths. Metabolic pathway reconstructions indicated that all clades of “Ca. Yaplasmales” have the capacity for alkane degradation by predicted alkyl-succinate synthase. Clade A of “Ca. Yaplasmales” might be mixotrophic microorganisms for the identification of the complete Wood-Ljungdahl pathway and putative genes involved in the degradation of aromatic and halogenated organic compounds. Clades B and C were likely heterotrophic, especially with the potential capacity of the spermidine/putrescine and aromatic compound degradation, as suggested by a significant negative correlation between the concentrations of aromatic compounds and the relative abundances of clade B. The sulfide-quinone oxidoreductase and pyrophosphate-energized membrane proton pump were encoded by all genomes of “Ca. Yaplasmales,” serving as adaptive strategies for energy production. These findings suggest that “Ca. Yaplasmales” might synergistically transform benthic pollutant and detrital organic matter, possibly playing a vital role in the marine and terrestrial sedimentary carbon cycle.

IMPORTANCE Deep oceans receive large amounts of complex organic carbon and anthropogenic pollutants. The deep-sea sediments of the continental slopes serve as the biggest carbon sink on Earth. Particulate organic carbons and detrital proteins accumulate in the sediment. The microbially mediated recycling of complex organic carbon is still largely unknown, which is an important question for carbon budget in global oceans and maintenance of the deep-sea ecosystem. In this study, we report the prevalence (up to 10.86% of the microbial community) of archaea from a novel order of Thermoplasmatota, “Ca. Yaplasmales,” in six of eight cores from 1,200- to 3,400-m depths in the South China Sea. We provide genomic evidence of “Ca. Yaplasmales” in the anaerobic microbial degradation of alkanes, aliphatic and monoaromatic hydrocarbons, and halogenated organic compounds. Our study identifies the key archaeal players in anoxic marine sediments, which are probably critical in recycling the complex organic carbon in global oceans.

Concentration, source apportionment and potential carcinogenic risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in roadside soils

PAHs are organic pollutants that have carcinogenic and mutagenic impacts on human health and are a subject of great concern. The soil-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the urban areas can be very lethal to human health. The concentrations, sources, and possible cancer risks of 15 PAHs were analysed by collecting roadside soil samples in Lucknow, India. The range of ∑₁₅PAHs was found to be 478.94 ng/g to 8164.07 ng/g with a mean concentration of 3748.23 ng/g. The highest contribution (32.5%) was found to be from four-ring PAHs, followed by six-ring (24.5%) and five-ring (16.7%) PAHs. The source apportionment through diagnostic ratios ANT/(ANT + PHE) against FL-2/(FL-2+PYR) highlighted the dominance of petroleum, wood, coal, and grass combustion as sources of PAHs in the study area. Source apportionment was also done through positive matrix factorization, confirming the dominance of 'vehicular emissions' (49%), followed by 'coal and biomass combustion' (∼39%), and 'leakages, volatilization and petroleum combustion' (∼12%) as potential sources. The results from lifetime cancer risks (ILCR) varied in the range of 7.5 × 10^-4 and 1.3 × 10 × ^-2 illustrating 'high cancer risk'. The total cancer risk susceptibility of children was found to be 31% more than that of adults. The highest risk associated with toxic equivalent concentration (TEQ) was found at site S8 highlighting the impact of the presence of an international airport, and huge traffic load. The present study will prove to be useful for information related to human exposure to PAHs content in soil in the study area and as baseline study for policy makers, stakeholders, and researchers.

Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Emitted from Open Burning and Stove Burning of Biomass: A Brief Review

To mitigate global warming and achieve carbon neutrality, biomass has become a widely used carbon-neutral energy source due to its low cost and easy availability. However, the incomplete combustion of biomass can produce polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are harmful to human health. Moreover, increasing numbers of wildfires in many regions caused by global warming have greatly increased the emissions of PAHs from biomass burning. To effectively mitigate PAH pollution and health risks associated with biomass usage, the concentrations, compositions and influencing factors of PAH emissions from biomass burning are summarized in this review. High PAH emissions from open burning and stove burning are found, and two- to four-ring PAHs account for a higher proportion than five- and six-ring PAHs. Based on the mechanism of biomass burning, biomass with higher volatile matter, cellulose, lignin, potassium salts and moisture produces more PAHs. Moreover, burning biomass in stoves at a high temperature or with an insufficient oxygen supply can increase PAH emissions. Therefore, the formation and emission of PAHs can be reduced by pelletizing, briquetting or carbonizing biomass to increase its density and burning efficiency. This review contributes to a comprehensive understanding of PAH pollution from biomass burning, providing prospective insight for preventing air pollution and health hazards associated with carbon neutrality.

Biosensor applications in contaminated estuaries: Implications for disaster research response

BACKGROUND

Given the time and monetary costs associated with traditional analytical chemistry, there remains a need to rapidly characterize environmental samples for priority analysis, especially within disaster research response (DR2). As PAHs are both ubiquitous and occur as complex mixtures at many National Priority List sites, these compounds are of interest for post-disaster exposures.

OBJECTIVE

This study tests the field application of the KinExA Inline Biosensor in Galveston Bay and the Houston Ship Channel (GB/HSC) and in the Elizabeth River, characterizing the PAH profiles of these region's soils and sediments. To our knowledge, this is the first application of the biosensor to include soils.

METHODS

The biosensor enables calculation of total free PAHs in porewater (C free), which is confirmed through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. To determine potential risk of the collected soils the United States Environmental Protection (USEPA) Agency's Regional Screening Level (RSL) Calculator is used along with the USEPA Region 4 Ecological Screening Values (R4-ESV) and Refined Screening Values (R4-RSV).

RESULTS

Based on GC-MS results, all samples had PAH-related hazard indices below 1, indicating low noncarcinogenic risks, but some samples exceeded screening levels for PAH-associated cancer risks. Combining biosensor-based C free with Total Organic Carbon yields predictions highly correlated (r > 0.5) both with total PAH concentrations as well as with hazard indices and cancer risks. Additionally, several individual parent PAH concentrations in both the GB/HSC and Elizabeth River sediments exceeded the R4- ESV and R4-RSV values, indicating a need for follow-up sediment studies.

CONCLUSIONS

The resulting data support the utility of the biosensor for future DR2 efforts to characterize PAH contamination, enabling preliminary PAH exposure risk screening to aid in prioritization of environmental sample analysis.

Industrialization and human activities have led to serious effects on environment. With the progress taking place in the biodegradation field, it is important to summarize the latest advancement. In this review, we intend to provide insights on the recent progress on the biodegradation of environmental contaminants such as dyes, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, explosive waste and polyaromatic hydrocarbons by microorganisms. Along with the biodegradation of environmental contaminants, toxicity effects have also been discussed.

A sensitive microextraction by packed sorbent-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method for the assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons contamination in Antarctic surface snow

For the first time an eco-friendly method involving microextraction by packed sorbent (MEPS) coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was developed for the determination of the 16 US-EPA priority pollutant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as indicators of anthropogenic contamination in snow samples collected in polar regions. MEPS was carried out by using C8 sorbent material packed in a barrel insert and needle (BIN) and integrated in the eVol® semi-automatic device. For optimization purposes a Face Centred Design and the multicriteria method of the desirability functions were performed to investigate the effect of some parameters affecting the MEPS extraction efficiency, i.e. the number of loading cycles and the number of elution cycles. The developed MEPS-GC-MS method proved to be suitable for PAHs analysis at ultra-trace level by extracting small sample volumes achieving detection limits for 16 PAHs in the 0.3-5 ng L^-1 range, repeatability and intermediate precision below 11% and 15%, respectively, and good recovery rates in the 77.6 (±0.1)-120.8 (±0.1)% range for spiked blank snow samples. Enrichment factors in the 64 (±7)-129 (±18) range were calculated. Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of PAHs in surface snow samples collected in 2020-2021 from four locations of Northern Victoria Land, Antarctica. Local emission sources such as ships and research stations were found to influence PAHs concentrations in the surface snow.

Toxicological impact of organic ultrafine particles (UFPs) in human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells at air-liquid interface

Air pollution has significant health effects worldwide, and airborne particles play a significant role in these effects. Ultrafine particles (UFPs) have an aerodynamic diameter of 0.1 μm or less, can penetrate deep into the respiratory tree, and are more toxic due to their large specific surface area, which should adsorb organic compounds. The aim of this study is to show the toxicological effects of UFPs with high organic content at low dose on BEAS-2B cells through at air-liquid interface (ALI) exposure using a Vitrocell® technology and a miniCAST (Combustion Aerosol Standard) generator. In conjunction with this approach, chemical analysis of particles and gas phase was performed to evaluate the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Chemical analyses confirmed the presence of PAHs in UFPs. With this experimental setup, exposure of the BEAS-2B cells induced neither cytotoxicity nor mitochondrial dysfunction. However, an increase of oxidative stress was observed, as assessed through Nrf2, NQO1, HO-1, CuZnSOD, MnSOD, and Catalase gene expression, together with significant induction of genes related to xenobiotic metabolism CYP1A1 and CYP1B1. Negative regulation of inflammatory genes expression (IL-6 and IL-8) was present three hours after the exposition to the UFPs. Taken together, this experimental approach, using repeatable conditions, should help to clarify the mechanisms by which organic UFPs induce toxicological effects.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the snow cover of the northern city agglomeration

Sixteen priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were qualitatively and quantitatively assessed by high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection in snow samples collected at 46 sites of Arkhangelsk as a world’s largest city above 64 degrees north latitude. The average, maximum and minimum PAH concentrations in snow were 168, 665, and 16 ng/kg, respectively. The average toxic equivalent value in benzo(a)pyrene units was 3.6 ng/kg, which is three-fold lower than the established maximum permissible concentration and considered an evidence of a low/moderate level of snow pollution with PAHs. The pollution origin was assessed using specific markers based on PAHs ratios in the studied samples. The pyrogenic sources of PAH emission were predominate, whereas the significant contributions from both transport and solid fuel combustion were observed. Benzo(a)pyrene concentrations are highly correlated with the levels of other PAHs with higher molecular weights.

Bioelectricity generation by natural microflora of septic tank wastewater (STWW) and biodegradation of persistent petrogenic pollutants by basidiomycetes fungi: An integrated microbial fuel cell system

The microbial fuel cell is a unique advantageous technology for the scientific community with the simultaneous generation of green energy along with bioelectroremediation of persistent hazardous materials. In this work, a novel approach of integrated system with bioelectricity generation from septic tank wastewater by native microflora in the anode chamber, while Psathyrella candolleana with higher ligninolytic enzyme activity was employed at cathode chamber for the biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Six MFC systems designated as MFC1, MFC2, MFC3, MFC4, MFC5, and MFC6 were experimented with different conditions. MFC1 system using natural microflora of STWW (100%) at anode chamber and K₃[Fe(CN)₆] as cathode buffer showed a power density and current density of 110 ± 10 mW/m² and 90 ± 10 mA/m² respectively. In the other five MFC systems 100% STWW was used at the anode and basidiomycetes fungi in the presence or absence of individual PAHs (naphthalene, acenaphthene, fluorene, and anthracene) at the cathode. MFC2, MFC3, MFC4, MFC5, and MFC6 had showed power density of 132 ± 17 mW/m², 138 ± 20 mW/m², 139 ± 25 mW/m², and 147 ± 10 mW/m² respectively. MFC2, MFC3, MFC4, MFC5, and MFC6 had showed current density of 497 ± 17 mA/m², 519 ± 10 mA/m², 522 ± 21 mA/m² and 525 ± 20 mA/m² respectively. In all the MFC systems, the electrochemical activity of anode biofilm was evaluated by cyclic voltammetry analysis and biofilms on all the MFC systems electrode surface were visualized by confocal laser scanning microscope. Biodegradation of PAHs during MFC experimentations in the cathode chamber was estimated by UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Overall, MFC6 system achieved maximum power density production of 525 ± 20 mA/m² with 77% of chemical oxygen demand removal and 54% of coulombic efficiency at the anode chamber and higher anthracene biodegradation (62 ± 1.13%) at the cathode chamber by the selected Psathyrella candolleana at 14th day. The present natural microflora - basidiomycetes fungal coupled MFC system offers excellent opening towards the simultaneous generation of green electricity and PAHs bioelectroremediation.

Environmental exposomics and lung cancer risk assessment in the Philadelphia metropolitan area using ZIP code-level hazard indices

To illustrate methods for assessing environmental exposures associated with lung cancer risk, we investigated anthropogenic based air pollutant data in a major metropolitan area using United States-Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA) Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) (1987-2017), and PM2.5 (1998-2016) and NO2 (1996-2012) concentrations from NASA satellite data. We studied chemicals reported according to the following five exposome features: (1) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) cancer grouping; (2) priority EPA polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs); (3) component of diesel exhaust; (4) status as a volatile organic compound (VOC); and (5) evidence of lung carcinogenesis. Published articles from PubChem were tallied for occurrences of 10 key characteristics of cancer-causing agents on those chemicals. Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) codes with higher exposures were identified in two ways: (1) combined mean exposure from all features, and (2) hazard index derived through a multi-step multi-criteria decision analysis (MMCDA) process. VOCs, IARC Group 1 carcinogens consisted 82.3% and 11.5% of the reported TRI emissions, respectively. ZIP codes along major highways tended to have greater exposure. The MMCDA approach yielded hazard indices based on imputed toxicity, occurrence, and persistence for risk assessment. Despite many studies describing environmental exposures and lung cancer risk, this study develops a method to integrate these exposures into population-based exposure estimates that could be incorporated into future lung cancer screening trials and benefit public health surveillance of lung cancer incidence. Our methodology may be applied to probe other hazardous exposures for other cancers.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5) Collected on TiO2-Supporting Quartz Fibre Filters

Airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution is known to have adverse effects on human health, and owing to their carcinogenic and mutagenic nature, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are of particular concern. This study investigated the effect of ultraviolet (UV)-induced photocatalysis on the degradation of PAHs in PM2.5, employing titanium dioxide (TiO2)-supporting quartz fibre filters. A TiO2 layer was formed on the quartz fibre filters, and airborne PM2.5 was collected using an air sample at a flow rate of 500 L/min for 24 h. The PM2.5 samples were subsequently irradiated with ultraviolet rays at 1.1 mW/cm2. The amounts of nine targeted PAHs (phenanthrene, PHE; anthracene, ANT; pyrene, PYR; benzo[a]anthracene, BaA; chrysene, CHR; benzo[b]fluoranthene, BbF; benzo[k]fluoranthene, BkF; benzo[a]pyrene, BaP; and benzo[g,h,i]perylene, BgP) gradually decreased during the treatment, with half-lives ranging from 18 h (PHE) to 3 h (BaP), and a significantly greater reduction was found in comparison with the PAHs collected in the control (non-TiO2 coated) quartz fibre filters. However, the degradation rates were much faster when the PAHs were in direct contact with the TiO2 layer. As PM2.5 is a mixture of various kinds of solids, co-existing components can be a rate-determining factor in the UV-induced degradation of PAHs. This was demonstrated by a remarkable increase in degradation rates following the removal of co-existing salts from the PM2.5 using water treatment.

Enzymatic pathway involved in the degradation of fluoranthene by microalgae Chlorella vulgaris

In the present study, the potential of a microalga, Chlorella vulgaris, was assessed for the bioremediation of fluoranthene (FLT), a four ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). With an initial cell density of C. vulgaris (OD₆₈₀ = 0.100), 54-58% of 25 μM FLT was removed from the growth medium within 3 days and almost 90-94% after 7 days of incubation. Enzymatic studies confirmed that the enzyme involved in FLT metabolism was catechol 2,3, dioxygenase (C2,3D) which increased almost 2 times in 5 μM FLT and 2.4 times in 25 μM FLT inoculated culture. Activity of dehydrogenase and superoxide dismutase (SOD) was significantly reduced, while peroxidase (POD) activity was induced very prominently in FLT inoculated cultures. Changes in growth, physiological parameters and biochemical compositions of the algae with 5 μM and 25 μM FLT were also analyzed and compared to control. The analysis showed that parameters including growth rate, biomass, chlorophyll, carbohydrate and protein contents, were negatively affected by the higher concentration of FLT, whereas the lipid and carotenoids content significantly increased. To our knowledge, this is the first report to suggest the role of C2,3D pathway for the metabolism of FLT in a eukaryotic algae.

Microplastics and other anthropogenic particles are prevalent in mussels from San Francisco Bay, and show no correlation with PAHs

Microplastics are an emerging contaminant of high environmental concern due to their widespread distribution and availability to aquatic organisms. Filter-feeding organisms like bivalves have been identified as particularly susceptible to microplastics, and because of this, it has been suggested bivalves could be useful bioindicators of microplastic pollution in ecosystems. We sampled resident mussels and clams from five sites within San Francisco Bay for microplastics and other anthropogenic microparticles. Cages of depurated mussels (denoted transplants) were also deployed at four sites in the Bay for 90 days to investigate temporal uptake of microplastics and microparticles. Because microplastics can sorb PAHs, and thus may act as a source of these chemicals upon ingestion, transplant mussels and resident clams were also analyzed for PAHs. We found anthropogenic microparticles in all samples at all sites, some of which were identified as microplastics. There was no statistical difference between the mean number of microparticles found in resident and transplant species. There were significant site-specific differences among microparticle abundances in the Bay, with the highest abundances observed in the South Bay. No correlation was found between the number of microparticles and the sum concentrations of PAHs, priority PAHs, or any individual PAH, suggesting the chemical concentrations observed reflect broader chemical trends in the Bay rather than direct exposure through microplastic ingestion. The pattern of spatial distribution of microparticles in transplanted mussels matched that of sediment samples from the Bay, suggesting bivalves could be a useful bioindicator of microplastic abundances in sediment, but not surface water.

Wildfires effects on organic matter of soils from Caramulo Mountain (Portugal): environmental implications

The investigation about wildfires has demonstrated that research should include studies on the overall assessment of the processes, thus promoting the public awareness about impacts. The aim of this study is to assess the changes on the carbon content of soils affected by wildfires in Caramulo Mountain (Portugal) to therefore identify the environmental impacts arisen from those changes. Soils from different parent rocks, affected and non-affected by wildfires, were collected. Petrographic and geochemical methods were used to identify changes caused by the wildfires in the organic fraction of soils. The results demonstrate that changes in soils composition after wildfires include the production of charcoal and pyrogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). The incorporation of charcoal from biomass burning in soils overtime and the production of pyrolytic PAH are of environmental concern since these compounds are known to be harmful to the environment and ecosystems and are human carcinogens. The concentration of BkF-benzo[k]fluoranthene, known as probable human carcinogen, exceeds the reference values for contaminated soils. Once in soils these compounds can be removed by percolation affecting waters and, consequently, biodiversity and human health.

Impact of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) from an Asphalt Mix Plant in a Suburban Residential Area

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), an important class of hazardous airborne pollutants, are mutagenic and carcinogenic substances known to be released during the paving of asphalt. In this study, PAHs emitted from an asphalt mix plant were analyzed to investigate the effects on a suburban residential area. Black carbon, organic carbon, elemental carbon, and PAHs in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were analyzed in a village near the asphalt mix plant. The results of wind direction analysis revealed that the village was meteorologically affected by emissions from the asphalt mix plant. PAHs in PM2.5 ranged from 0.51 to 60.73 ng/m3, with an average of 11.54 ng/m3. Seasonal PAHs were highest in winter, followed in order by spring, autumn, and summer. The diagnostic ratios between PAHs indicate that the source of PAHs could be incomplete combustion of petrogenic origin. The maximum black carbon concentration in the intensive periods reaches up to 14.17 μg/m3 during mix plant operation periods. Seasonal ∑BaPTEF values based on Toxic Equivalence Factor were: winter (2.284 ng/m3), spring (0.575 ng/m3), autumn (0.550 ng/m3), and summer (0.176 ng/m3). The values are about 6.5 times higher than the concentration in another background area and more than three times higher than those in the capital city, Seoul, in the Republic of Korea. In conclusion, primary emissions from the point source can be considered the major contributor to pollution in the residential area.

Using Spatial Analysis to Examine Potential Sources of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in an Environmental Justice Community After Hurricane Harvey

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmental contaminants associated with adverse human health outcomes. Environmental justice neighborhoods experience disproportionate environmental health risks. Hurricane Harvey made landfall on August 25, 2017, bringing record rainfall and catastrophic flooding to Houston, Texas, redistributing PAHs in residential soil. We aimed to describe PAH distributions in soil in the Manchester neighborhood of Houston, TX, and identify their potential sources. Soil samples were collected from 24 residential addresses and analyzed for 16 priority PAH concentrations using an accelerated solvent extractor. PAH distribution and source determination were conducted using spatial analysis and isomer ratios. All sample sites detected PAHs in soil, with the total mass ranging from 0.75 to 69.9 ng/g, which were predominantly four-ring structured PAHs. Total PAH concentrations were highest on the northeastern border of the neighborhood, whereas lower overall concentrations of PAHs were found on the southwestern border, at the highest elevation in the watershed. The ratio indeno[1,,3-cd]pyrene (IP) to indeno[1,,3-cd]pyrene plus benzo[ghi]perylene indicated vehicular combustion as the primary source in 19 of 23 samples. After heavy rainfall from Hurricane Harvey in the Manchester neighborhood, PAHs in soil were unevenly distributed throughout the neighborhood, with an accumulation of PAHs in the northeastern edges. Using isomer ratios and spatial analysis, the likely source of PAHs is from use of transportation infrastructure.

Negative Impacts of Biochars on Urease Activity: High pH, Heavy Metals, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, or Free Radicals?

Although biochars show promise for soil remediation, their negative impacts have not been systematically assessed. This study investigated the effects of corn cob biochars on urease-mediated urea hydrolysis and attempted to determine the mechanisms underlying those effects. The results showed that biochars inhibited urease activity (indicated by the NH₄⁺ generation). Released heavy metals and polyaromatic hydrocarbons explained the 20% inhibition of urease activity in biochar supernatants (200 °C) but could not explain the 70% inhibition in particle systems (400 °C). The levels of protein carbonyl and nitrotyrosine, common oxidative damagers of urease, were high in particle systems but very low in biochar supernatants. The electron paramagnetic resonance signal intensity reached its highest level in the 400 °C biochar and decreased in the 500 °C biochar, possibly due to the decomposition of organic molecules. The observed inhibition of urease activity may be the result of oxidative reactions with free radicals on the biochar surface or oxidative reactions with reactive oxygen species promoted by free radicals. We suggest that these potential hazards be evaluated further to gauge the relevance of these findings to field conditions and to assist in the development of safe and sustainable application schemes for biochars.

Distribution, sources, and potential risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils from an industrial district in Shanxi, China

Concentration, composition profile, orientation distribution, sources, and potential risks of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in 76 surface (0-25 cm) soil samples collected from the Changzhi industrial district in July 2014 using a gas chromatography mass spectrometer (GC-MS QP2010 Ultra) system. The composition patterns of the PAHs were dominated by the presence of four-ring PAHs (average 42.9%), followed by three-ring (average 25.9%), five-ring PAHs (average 25.6%), two-ring PAHs (average 5.03%), and lastly, six-ring PAHs (average 0.641%). Source apportionment of the soil PAHs was also performed by the diagnostic ratios, principal component analysis (PCA), and coefficient of divergence (CD) analysis indicated signatures of PAHs sources (including incineration, coal/wood combustion, and vehicular exhaust emission). The total concentration of 16 PAHs (∑16PAHs) found in the roadsides soils (RS) ranged from 2197 to 25,041 μg kg^-1, with an arithmetic mean value of 12,245 μg kg^-1; followed by the village soils (VS), which ranged from 2059 to 21,240 μg kg^-1, with a mean of 8976 μg kg^-1; and lastly, the agricultural soils (AS), which ranged from 794 to 16,858 μg kg^-1, with a mean of 3456 μg kg^-1. According to the numerical effect-based soils quality guidelines of Maliszewska-Kordybach, the levels of PAHs in the sampled industrial areas range from high to heavy contamination. The values of total benzo[a]pyrene toxicity equivalent values (∑Bapeq16PAHs) in the sample areas ranged from 0.087 to 3611 μg kg^-1 with an average of 969 μg kg^-1. According to the soil quality guidelines of Canada, values found in the highest range (100 μg kg^-1), which are equal to those of ∑Bapeq16PAHs found in the industrial area samples, will exert adverse biological effects. The results of this research could potentially be useful for local governments to control toxicity exposure, promote actions to alleviate PAHs contamination, and to manage human health at both work and industrial areas.

Carcinogenic potential of PAHs in oil-contaminated soils from the main oil fields across China

The concentrations, composition profiles, and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in 55 surface soil samples collected from four oil fields across China (Daqing, DQ; Shengli, SL; Xinjiang, XJ; and Huabei, HB). The total 16 priority PAHs concentrations of DQ, SL, XJ, and HB ranged from 857 to 27,816; 480 to 20,625; 497 to 43,210; and 12,112 to 45,325 ng/g, respectively, with means of 9160; 6394; 13,569; and 22,954 ng/g and the seven possible carcinogenic PAHs accounted for 8-25.7 % of the total PAHs. Almost all the samples were heavily contaminated, and phenanthrene, chrysene, and pyrene were the most dominant components. The PAH isomeric ratios indicated that PAHs in oil fields mainly originated from petroleum. The toxic assessment illustrated that people living and working in oil fields would suffer low carcinogenic risk, which was somehow coincided with the results of epidemiological survey on cancer incidence. It seems essential to pay more attention to the chronic human health effects of exposure to oil fields and to focus new studies on the public health field that involves a large number of people all over the world.
