Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the dynamic longitudinal relationship between grip strength and cognitive function. METHODS 6175 participants aged ≥50 years were included in the study using three waves of follow-up data from the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe in 2015 (T1), 2017 (T2) and 2019 (T3). Cognitive function was assessed using numeracy, verbal fluency, immediate recall, delayed recall and total. The cross-lagged panel model was used for analysis. RESULTS There was a correlation between grip strength and cognitive function. Standardized path coefficient from numeracy T1 to grip strength T2 was 0.017 (p = 0.003), and from numeracy T2 to grip strength T3 was 0.014 (p = 0.012). Standardized path coefficient from grip strength T1 to numeracy T2 was 0.096 (p < 0.001), and from grip strength T2 to numeracy T3 was 0.113 (p < 0.001). Other indicators of cognitive function had similar relationships with grip strength. CONCLUSIONS The study found a statistically significant longitudinal and bidirectional relationship between grip strength and cognitive function in a sample of people aged ≥50 years from several European countries.

Abstract
Aging involves physical and cognitive deterioration in older adults. Detecting predictors of dementia early is crucial to identify its onset. This study aimed to associate physical and psychological determinants with cognitive performance in older adults. Observational study with 221 older adults, classified according to cognitive impairment. We evaluated cognitive function by Mini-Mental State Examination. Physical determinants encompassed muscle strength, functional mobility, and cardiorespiratory fitness, while psychological consisted of quality of life and activities of daily living. Multiple linear regression was performed to investigate this relationship. Physical and psychological determinants were significantly linked to cognitive impairment, including lower muscle strength, reduced functional mobility and of cardiorespiratory fitness. The influence of environment, autonomy, and engagement in daily activities on cognitive impairment was also observed. The analysis of physical and psychological determinants could help to aid in distinguishing individuals with cognitive impairment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Muscle weakness is a prominent feature of Parkinson's disease, but whether the occurrence of this deficit in healthy adults is associated with subsequent PD diagnosis remains unclear. OBJECTIVE This study sought to examine the relationship between muscle strength, represented by grip strength and walking pace, and the risk of incident PD. METHODS A total of 422,531 participants from the UK biobank were included in this study. Longitudinal associations of grip strength and walking pace with the risk of incident PD were investigated by Cox proportional hazard models adjusting for several well-established risk factors. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses were also conducted for further validation. RESULTS After a median follow-up of 9.23 years, 2,118 (0.5%) individuals developed incident PD. For per 5 kg increment of absolute grip strength, there was a significant 10.2% reduction in the risk of incident PD (HR = 0.898, 95% CI [0.872-0.924], P < 0.001). Similarly, per 0.05 kg/kg increment of relative grip strength was related to a 9.2% reduced risk of incident PD (HR = 0.908, 95% CI [0.887-0.929], P < 0.001). Notably, the associations remained consistent when grip strength was calculated as quintiles. Moreover, participants with a slower walking pace demonstrated an elevated risk of incident PD (HR = 1.231, 95%CI [1.075-1.409], P = 0.003). Subgroup and sensitivity analyses further validated the robustness of the observed associations. CONCLUSION Our findings showed a negative association of grip strength and walking pace with the risk of incident PD independent of important confounding factors. These results hold potential implications for the early screening of people at high-risk of PD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To identify heterogeneous developmental trajectories of handgrip strength (HGS) in Chinese older adults and to explore the relationship between different developmental trajectories and motoric cognitive risk syndrome (MCR). METHODS We used three waves of longitudinal data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study from 2011 to 2015, which involved 3773 older adults. Growth mixture modeling (GMM) was used to estimate trajectory classes for HGS, followed by binary logistic regression to explore the association between trajectory classes and MCR. RESULTS GMM analyses extracted four distinct trajectories of HGS: low level-declining group (16.0 %), upper middle level group (30.9 %), high level-steady group (9.5 %), and lower middle level group (43.6 %). In addition, we found that even after adjusting for important covariates, the odds of MCR prevalence were lower in the medium level-high group, high level-steady group, and medium level-low group compared with the low level-declining group. CONCLUSION Appreciable heterogeneity in HGS among older people in China was revealed. Only 9.5 % of older people with HGS in the high level-steady group. And poorer grip strength levels mean a higher risk of MCR. Therefore, interventions should be taken to maintain muscle mass and thus prevent MCR in older adults.

Abstract
Handgrip strength is a crucial indicator to monitor the change of cognitive function over time, but its mechanism still needs to be further explored. We sampled 59 monozygotic twin pairs to explore the potential mediating effect of DNA methylation (DNAm) on the association between handgrip strength and cognitive function. The initial step was the implementation of an epigenome-wide association analysis (EWAS) in the study participants, with the aim of identifying DNAm variations that are associated with handgrip strength. Following that, we conducted an assessment of the mediated effect of DNAm by the use of mediation analysis. In order to do an ontology enrichment study for CpGs, the GREAT program was used. There was a significant positive association between handgrip strength and cognitive function (β = 0.194, P < 0.001). The association between handgrip strength and DNAm of 124 CpGs was found to be statistically significant at a significance level of P < 1 × 10-4. Fifteen differentially methylated regions (DMRs) related to handgrip strength were found in genes such as SNTG2, KLB, CDH11, and PANX2. Of the 124 CpGs, 4 within KRBA1, and TRAK1 mediated the association between handgrip strength and cognitive function: each 1 kg increase in handgrip strength was associated with a potential decrease of 0.050 points in cognitive function scores, mediated by modifications in DNAm. The parallel mediating effect of these 4 CpGs was -0.081. The presence of DNAm variation associated with handgrip strength may play a mediated role in the association between handgrip strength and cognitive function.

Abstract
Studies suggest that ketogenic diets (KD) may improve memory in mouse models of aging and Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study determined whether a continuous or intermittent KD (IKD) enhanced cognitive behavior in the TgF344-AD rat model of AD. At 6 months-old, TgF344-AD and wild-type (WT) littermates were placed on a control (CD), KD, or IKD (morning CD and afternoon KD) provided as two meals per day for 2 or 6 months. Cognitive and motor behavior and circulating β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), AD biomarkers and blood lipids were assessed. Animals on a KD diet had elevated circulating BHB, with IKD levels intermediate to CD and KD. TgF344-AD rats displayed impaired spatial learning memory in the Barnes maze at 8 and 12 months of age and impaired motor coordination at 12 months of age. Neither KD nor IKD improved performance compared to CD. At 12 months of age, TgF344-AD animals had elevated blood lipids. IKD reduced lipids to WT levels with KD further reducing cholesterol below WT levels. This study shows that at 8 or 12 months of age, KD or IKD intervention did not improve measures of cognitive or motor behavior in TgF344-AD rats; however, both IKD and KD positively impacted circulating lipids.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE As the population ages, concerns about cognitive decline have become increasingly relevant in medical consultations. This study aims to analyze the interaction between muscle strength, lung function, and cognitive function in Chinese middle-aged and older adults, providing a theoretical basis for better prevention of cognitive decline. METHODS This study used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) wave 3, including 13 716 participants aged 45 years or older. Cognitive function was assessed through two dimensions, resulting in a total score ranging from 0 to 31 points, with higher scores indicating better cognitive function. Muscle strength was measured using normalized grip strength and chair-standing time, while lung function was evaluated using peak expiratory flow (PEF). RESULTS Total cognitive function scores exhibited significant correlations with grip strength, chair-standing time, and PEF. Muscle strength and lung function demonstrated significant associations with cognitive function, with lung function emerging as a notable mediating factor. This relationship persisted even after adjusting for potential confounding variables. Specifically, PEF played a substantial mediating role in linking grip strength to cognitive function scores (estimated indirect effect = 0.0132, boot-strapped standard error = 0.0015, boot-strapped standard 95% confidence interval = 0.0104, 0.0162). Additionally, PEF served as a significant mediator in the association between chair-standing time and cognitive function scores (estimated indirect effect = -0.0204, boot-strapped standard error = 0.0023, boot-strapped standard 95% confidence interval = -0.0251, -0.0159). CONCLUSION The study highlights the importance of addressing declines in muscle strength and lung function to identify risk factors associated with cognitive function. Understanding these relationships can provide insights into potential pathways linking these variables and may aid in better prevention of cognitive decline. Further long-term longitudinal cohort studies are needed to explore the causality between these factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The multifinger force deficit (MFFD) is the decline in force generated by each finger as the number of fingers contributing to an action is increased. It has been shown to associate with cognitive status. AIMS The aim was to establish whether a particularly challenging form of multifinger grip dynamometry, that provides minimal tactile feedback via cutaneous receptors and requires active compensation for reaction forces, will yield an MFFD that is more sensitive to cognitive status. METHODS Associations between measures of motor function, and cognitive status (Montreal Cognitive Assessment [MoCA]) and latent components of cognitive function (derived from 11 tests using principal component analysis), were estimated cross-sectionally using generalized partial rank correlations. The participants (n = 62) were community dwelling, aged 65-87. RESULTS Approximately half the participants were unable to complete the dynamometry task successfully. Cognitive status demarcated individuals who could perform the task from those who could not. Among those who complied with the task requirements, the MFFD was negatively correlated with MoCA scores-those with the highest MoCA scores tended to exhibit the smallest deficits, and vice versa. There were corresponding associations with latent components of cognitive function. DISCUSSION The results support the view that neurodegenerative processes that are a feature of normal and pathological aging exert corresponding effects on expressions of motor coordination-in multifinger tasks, and cognitive sufficiency, due to their dependence on shared neural systems. CONCLUSIONS The outcomes add weight to the assertion that deficits in force production during multifinger tasks are sensitive to cognitive dysfunction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Subjective cognitive decline represents a critical stage for preventing mild cognitive impairment and dementia, but the links between clinical progression in the subjective cognitive decline stage and various motor functions remain inconclusive. This cohort study aimed to elucidate the independent and joint associations between the clinical progression of subjective cognitive decline and motor functions. METHODS We enrolled 4880 community-dwelling elderly participants from a national cohort and used Cox proportional hazard regression model and restricted cubic spline models to explore the longitudinal associations between motor functions (gait, strength, balance, and endurance) and the clinical progression of subjective cognitive decline. RESULTS During 5-years follow-up, 1239 participants experienced clinical progression. After adjusting for demographics, vascular burden, body components, and polypharmacy, gait speed [hazard ratios (HRs)= 0.96, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.94-0.99], chair stand test (HRs=1.02, 95%CI 1.01-1.03), and endurance limitation in jogging 1 kilometer (HRs=1.18, 95%CI 1.04-1.34) were significantly associated with clinical progression. Among all participants, individuals characterized by poor upper- and lower-body strength, as well as those with slow pace and reduced endurance, faced the highest risk of cognitive impairment. CONCLUSIONS This study emphasizes the potential of gait speed, muscle strength, and endurance as non-cognitive indicators of clinical progression in subjective cognitive decline. Understanding their combined effectiveness may reveal primary physiological mechanisms contributing to the dual decline of motor and cognition.

Abstract
A cross-sectional design investigated the physical attributes of 15 dyads of people with dementia and their caregivers. Physical and cognitive markers determined deviations from clinical thresholds for loss of functional independence, where 100% of participants performed below criterion-referenced threshold values for aerobic endurance. Walking distance for people with dementia was associated with bath/shower activity (p = .007), transfers (p < .001), and mobility (p = .013). Less distance walked was associated with more assistance with self-care tasks. Physical deficits associated with low aerobic endurance and lower body strength compromised independence, placing dyads at risk for falls and mobility-related health issues.

Abstract
Background The joint associations of handgrip strength (HGS) weakness and asymmetry with cognitive decline remain understudied in older adults. Objective To investigate the associations between HGS weakness, asymmetry, and lower cognitive function in a nationally representative sample of older Americans. Methods This cross-sectional study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2014. Weakness was defined as HGS <26 kg for men and <16 kg for women. Asymmetry was determined by calculating the ratio of dominant to non-dominant HGS. Participants with an HGS ratio <0.90 or >1.10 were classified as having any HGS asymmetry. Those with an HGS ratio >1.10 exhibited dominant HGS asymmetry, while those with an HGS ratio <0.90 displayed nondominant HGS asymmetry, respectively. Lower cognitive functioning was defined as global cognitive composite scores more than 1 standard deviation below the mean. Covariate-adjusted logistic regression models were used to analyze the associations between HGS asymmetry/weakness and lower cognitive functioning. Results Compared to individuals with non-weak and symmetric HGS, those with any HGS asymmetry alone and weakness alone had 1.017 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.707-1.463) and 1.391 (95% CI: 0.542-3.571) greater odds for cognitive decline, while co-occurrence of both HGS asymmetry and weakness was associated with 3.724 (95% CI: 1.711-8.107) greater odds for lower cognitive function after controlling for confounders. Cnclusions Individuals exhibiting both diminished and asymmetrical HGS demonstrated an elevated susceptibility to cognitive impairment, thereby implying that the inclusion of HGS asymmetry assessment in conjunction with weakness evaluation may enhance the accuracy of prognosticating cognitive decline.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore the links of handgrip strength and asymmetry with cognitive impairment. DESIGN This was a seven-year prospective cohort study. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS We used data from wave 3 (2015-2017) to wave 5 (2019-2022) from the ongoing Taiwan Initiative of Geriatric Epidemiological Research (TIGER), with wave 3 as the baseline (n = 446). The study included community-dwelling participants aged 65 years or older. MEASUREMENTS Handgrip strength was measured, and abnormalities were determined based on handgrip strength weakness and asymmetry. Handgrip strength asymmetry was categorized into three groups at baseline based on the handgrip strength ratio (left handgrip strength/right handgrip strength). Cognitive tests evaluating global and specific cognitive domains were conducted at baseline and two biennial follow-ups. Generalized linear mixed models were utilized to assess the associations of abnormal handgrip strength with global cognition and multiple cognitive domain progression over time. RESULTS This study included 392 dementia-free participants, with an average age of 75.8 years and 179 (45.7%) males. Mild handgrip strength asymmetry was present in 88 participants (22.4%), while 53 (13.5%) exhibited moderate asymmetry. In men, the coexistence of low handgrip strength and handgrip strength asymmetry was linked to cognitive impairment over time. These associations were observed in global cognition (β^ = -1.76, 95% CI: -2.79 to -0.74), memory (immediate free recall: β^ = -0.67, 95% CI: -1.17 to -0.17), executive function (Trail Making Test-A: β^ = -0.54, 95% CI: -0.94 to -0.13), and attention (Digit span-forward: β^ = -1.00, 95% CI: -1.46 to -0.54). CONCLUSIONS This study found that individuals with reduced handgrip strength and handgrip strength asymmetry had an increased risk of cognitive impairment across various domains. Moreover, this association appears to be more pronounced among men than women. Incorporating these simple assessments into regular clinical practice improves the allocation of limited screening resources and timely clinical interventions in older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The sex difference in the association between grip strength and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) remains controversial and unclear. METHODS This is a part of a chronic disease cohort study conducted in rural areas, Fuxin, Liaoning Province, China. At the baseline survey, a total of 2633 participants aged 35- 85 were included in the cross-sectional study. Handgrip strength (HGS, kg) was measured by a dynamometer (Jamar +). MCI were assessed using the Chinese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment-Basic (MOCA-BC). Then, a total of 1667 cognitively normal individuals (NCs) were planed to follow up and to assess the incident MCI after two years. We used logistic regression to examine the association between HGS (as a continuous variable and quintiles) and MCI and analyzed the interaction between sex and HGS on MCI. Models stratified by sex were adjusted for demographic information (age, ethnicity, education, marital status, income, physical labor level), modifiable risk factors (body mass index, smoking, drinking) and disease history (hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia and coronary heart disease). Baseline MOCA-BC scores were additionally adjusted in the longitudinal study. RESULTS In the cross-sectional study, participants were on average 56.6 ± 9.8 years, and 1713 (65.1%) were females. In the cohort study, 743 individuals were followed up with an average age of 55.9 ± 9.6 years, which included 530 (71.3%) females. The cumulative incidence of MCI over a two-year period was 17.1%. In the cross-sectional study, compared to the highest quintile of HGS, the lowest HGS was associated with higher risk of MCI in males (odds ratio [OR]: 2.66; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.54, 4.64) and females (OR: 1.70; 95% CI: 1.17, 2.49) with adjustment of potential confounding factors. In the cohort study, compared to the highest quintile of HGS, the lowest HGS was associated with an increased risk of incident MCI in females (OR: 3.93; 95% CI: 1.39, 13.01) but not in males (OR: 0.56; 95% CI: 0.11, 2.94, P for interaction = 0.015). CONCLUSIONS Lower grip strength is a risk factor for mild cognitive impairment and predicts a higher risk of MCI in females.

Abstract
Healthy aging is a global goal to enhance the quality of life for older persons. This study evaluated the benefits of 12-week concurrent brisk walking and Taijiquan. Healthy Chinese women aged 60 years and above were enrolled to the control (n = 26) and intervention (n = 25) groups. Participants in the intervention group engaged in three exercise sessions per week for 12 weeks, whereas control group engaged in free-living activities. Each exercise session consisted of 20-45 minutes of walking and 20-45 minutes of Yang style 24-form Taijiquan. 12-week exercise improved (p < 0.05) the sit and reach test (within-group mean difference: +5.6 cm; Hedges' g = 0.77), handgrip strength (mean difference: +3.1 kg; g = 0.89), arm curl (mean difference: +2.1 repetitions; g = 0.69), chair stand (mean difference: +2.6 repetitions; g = 0.63), and one-legged standing (mean difference: +2.2 seconds; g = 1.07). There was no improvement in the circulatory health, body composition, or life satisfaction. Therefore, this concurrent brisk walking and Taijiquan training, which targets major whole-body muscle groups, could improve aging-critical flexibility, muscular fitness, and balance in older women. The exercise meets the current WHO guideline, is safe to perform, and could be campaigned as a health promotion for older persons.

Abstract
Objective Previous research has primarily focused on the association between muscle strength and global cognitive function in older adults, while the connection between muscle strength and advanced cognitive function such as inhibition and working memory (WM) remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship among muscle strength, WM, and task-related cortex hemodynamics. Methods We recruited eighty-one older adults. Muscle strength was measured using a grip and lower limb strength protocol. We measured the WM performance by using reaction time (RT) and accuracy (ACC) in the N-back task and the cortical hemodynamics of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) by functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Results We found positive correlations between grip strength (p < 0.05), 30-s sit-up (p < 0.05) and ACC, negative correlation between grip strength (p < 0.05) and RT. Furthermore, we observed positive correlations between grip strength and the level of oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO2) in dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, frontopolar area, ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (p < 0.05), and negative correlations between grip strength and the level of deoxygenated hemoglobin (Hb) in left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, frontopolar area, left ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (p < 0.05). Additionally, we noticed positive correlations between RT and the level of Hb in left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, right frontopolar area (p < 0.05), and negative correlations between RT and the level of HbO2 in left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, frontopolar area (p < 0.05). However, the cortical hemodynamics did not mediate the relationship between muscle strength and WM performance (RT, ACC). Conclusion The grip strength of older adults predicted WM in the cross-section study. The level of hemodynamics in PFC can serve as a predictor of WM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to analyze the bidirectional association between handgrip strength (HGS) and cognitive performance in different cognitive functions in a European population and to evaluate the predictive validity of HGS for the risk of future cognitive impairment in aging individuals. METHODS This was a prospective cohort study conducted using data on individuals over 50 years of age from the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). HGS measures and scores in numeracy, recall, and verbal fluency were repeated and analyzed biannually for 4 years and were used in generalized estimating equations to test the bidirectional association, categorized by sex. RESULTS Of the 8236 individuals included, 55.73% were women with a mean age of 67.55 (standard deviation [SD] = 8.4) years and 44.27% were men with a mean age of 68.42 (SD = 7.7) years. HGS predicted cognitive decline in both sexes, except for numeracy in men, even after adjustments. The strongest association with HGS in women was in verbal fluency (β = .094; 95% CI = 0.039 to 0.151), whereas the strongest association with HGS in men was in delayed verbal recall (β = .095; 95% CI = 0.039 to 0.151). Conversely, the greatest cognitive predictor of HGS decline was verbal fluency in men (β = .796; 95% CI = 0.464 to 1.128), and in women (β = .801; 95% CI= 0.567 to 1.109). CONCLUSION There is a significant and bidirectional association between HGS and different cognitive functions in a European multicentric population. This bidirectional association differed between sexes. IMPACT Both men and women who presented with cognitive decline also showed early changes in their HGS measures, and vice versa, but there still were differences between the sexes. These findings reinforce that HGS may be a simple and inexpensive method to identify early signs of cognitive decline, and that studies and rehabilitation strategies should be more sex specific.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Subjective memory complaints are considered an early sign of cognitive decline. Recent evidence shows that grip strength is an important predictor of cognitive function. However, few studies have compared whether one condition is uniquely associated with cognitive function when another condition is controlled for. AIMS To explore the longitudinal associations of cognitive function with subjective memory complaints and grip strength in middle-aged and older adults, with a particular focus on whether one condition is uniquely associated with cognitive function when another condition is considered. METHODS A total of 3,877 middle-aged and older adults (aged 45-92 years) from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study reported on their demographic and health status and completed measures of grip strength and subjective memory complaints, as well as a series of cognitive tests, every two years between 2011 and 2015. Generalized estimating equation models were used to assess the relationships between grip strength, subjective memory complaints, and cognitive function. RESULTS Grip strength was longitudinally associated with cognitive function (β = 0.021, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.011, 0.030, P < 0.001) independent of subjective memory complaints. In contrast, changes in the subjective memory complaints were not related to cognitive function over time (β = 0.107, 95% CI: - 0.025, 0.238, P = 0.112). Only at baseline subjective memory complaints were associated with poorer cognitive function (β = - 1.142, 95% CI: - 1.309, - 0.975, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Grip strength might be a more important clinical correlate of cognitive function decline over time than subjective memory complaints. DISCUSSION Regular assessment and close monitoring of grip strength might help identify individuals who might be at high risk for cognitive impairment.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the association between handgrip strength (HGS) with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in US adults. Method We analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) prospective cohort study (2011-2014) with 10,470 participants. The cox regression analysis, Kaplan-Meier survival curves, fitted curves, ROC curves, and propensity score-matched analysis (PSM) with inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW), SMRW (PSM with repeated weights), PA (pairwise algorithm), and OW (overlap weighting) regression analysis were performed to assess the relationship between HGS and all-cause and CVD mortality. Results The low HGSs (men <37.4 kg, women <24 kg), was found to be associated with higher all-cause and CVD mortality in a reverse J-shaped curve (p < 0.05). Adjusting for multiple covariates including age, BMI, race, education level, marriage status, smoking and alcohol use, and various comorbidities, the hazard ratio (HR) for all-cause mortality in the lowest HGS quintile 1 (Q1) was 3.45 (2.14-5.58) for men and 3.3 (1.88-5.79) for women. For CVD mortality, the HR was 2.99 (1.07-8.37) for men and 10.35 (2.29-46.78) for women. The area under the curve (AUC) for HGS alone as a predictor of all-cause mortality was 0.791 (0.768-0.814) for men and 0.780 (0.752-0.807) for women (p < 0.05), while the AUC for HGS and age was 0.851 (0.830-0.871) for men and 0.848 (0.826-0.869) for women (p < 0.05). For CVD mortality, the AUC for HGS alone was 0.785 (95% CI 0.738-0.833) for men and 0.821 (95% CI 0.777-0.865) for women (p < 0.05), while the AUC for HGS and age as predictors of all-cause mortality was 0.853 (0.861-0.891) for men and 0.859 (0.821-0.896) for women (p < 0.05). The HGS Q1 (men <37.4 kg and women <24 kg) was matched separately for PSM. After univariate, multivariate Cox regression models, PSM, IPTW, SMRW, PA, and OW analyses, women had 2.37-3.12 and 2.92-5.12 HRs with low HGS for all-cause and CVD mortality, while men had 2.21-2.82 and 2.33-2.85 for all-cause and CVD mortality, respectively (p < 0.05). Conclusion Adults with low HGS exhibited a significantly increased risk of both all-cause and CVD mortality, regardless of gender. Additionally, low HGS served as an independent risk factor and predictor for both all-cause and CVD mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Physical frailty is known to be closely associated with cognitive impairment and to be an early sign of Alzheimer's disease. We aimed to understand the characteristics of physical frailty and define factors associated with physical frailty in subjects with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) by analyzing amyloid data. METHODS We prospectively enrolled subjects with SCD from a cohort study to identify predictors for the clinical progression to mild cognitive impairment or dementia from SCD (CoSCo). All of the subjects underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging, and brain amyloid positron-emission tomography (PET) to detect amyloid beta plaques. Self-reported exhaustion, handgrip strength, and gait speed were used to measure physical frailty. RESULTS Of 120 subjects with SCD, 26 (21.7%) were amyloid-positive in PET. Female (odds ratio [OR]=3.79, p=0.002) and amyloid-PET-positive (OR=3.80, p=0.008) subjects with SCD were at high risks of self-reported exhaustion. Amyloid PET positivity (OR=3.22, p=0.047) and high burden from periventricular white-matter hyperintensity (OR=3.34, 95% confidence interval=1.18-9.46, p=0.023) were significantly associated with a weaker handgrip. The subjects with SCD with self-reported exhaustion and weaker handgrip presented with lower cognitive performance in neuropsychological tests, especially for information processing speed and executive function. Subjects with a slower gait performed worse in visual memory function tests. CONCLUSIONS Amyloid PET positivity was associated with a higher risk of self-reported exhaustion and weaker handgrip in subjects with SCD. The subjects with SCD and physical frailty also performed worse in neuropsychological tests.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a growing interest to understand the neurobiological mechanisms that drive the positive associations of physical activity and fitness with measures of cognitive performance. To better understand those mechanisms, several studies have employed eye-based measures (e.g., eye movement measures such as saccades, pupillary measures such as pupil dilation, and vascular measures such as retinal vessel diameter) deemed to be proxies for specific neurobiological mechanisms. However, there is currently no systematic review providing a comprehensive overview of these studies in the field of exercise-cognition science. Thus, this review aimed to address that gap in the literature. METHODS To identify eligible studies, we searched 5 electronic databases on October 23, 2022. Two researchers independently extracted data and assessed the risk of bias using a modified version of the Tool for the assEssment of Study qualiTy and reporting in EXercise (TESTEX scale, for interventional studies) and the critical appraisal tool from the Joanna Briggs Institute (for cross-sectional studies). RESULTS Our systematic review (n = 35 studies) offers the following main findings: (a) there is insufficient evidence available to draw solid conclusions concerning gaze-fixation-based measures; (b) the evidence that pupillometric measures, which are a proxy for the noradrenergic system, can explain the positive effect of acute exercise and cardiorespiratory fitness on cognitive performance is mixed; (c) physical training- or fitness-related changes of the cerebrovascular system (operationalized via changes in retinal vasculature) are, in general, positively associated with cognitive performance improvements; (d) acute and chronic physical exercises show a positive effect based on an oculomotor-based measure of executive function (operationalized via antisaccade tasks); and (e) the positive association between cardiorespiratory fitness and cognitive performance is partly mediated by the dopaminergic system (operationalized via spontaneous eye-blink rate). CONCLUSION This systematic review offers confirmation that eye-based measures can provide valuable insight into the neurobiological mechanisms that may drive positive associations between physical activity and fitness and measures of cognitive performance. However, due to the limited number of studies utilizing specific methods for obtaining eye-based measures (e.g., pupillometry, retinal vessel analysis, spontaneous eye blink rate) or investigating a possible dose-response relationship, further research is necessary before more nuanced conclusions can be drawn. Given that eye-based measures are economical and non-invasive, we hope this review will foster the future application of eye-based measures in the field of exercise-cognition science.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to investigate handgrip strength and dynapenia prevalence among older adults stratified by Brazilian macroregions. Additionally, we aim to evaluate the overlap between dynapenia and Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) disability, depression, and executive dysfunction on a national basis and by each Brazilian macroregion. METHODS This cross-sectional analysis was based on data from the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil). A multistage cluster sample design was used, with a representative population-based study of non-institutionalized community-dwelling Brazilians aged ≥ 50 years from 70 municipalities across all five macroregions of the country. The outcome variable was dynapenia. Covariables were IADL disability, depression, and executive dysfunction. The Brazilian macroregions were used for stratification. In addition, the following additional variables were included: age group, gender, education level, macroregions (North, Northeast, Southeast, South, and Midwest), self-reported health, multimorbidity, and falls. RESULTS A total of 8,849 (94%) of the sample provided complete information for the handgrip strength assessment and were included in this analysis. Dynapenia prevalence was higher in North and Northeast regions (28.5% and 35.1%, respectively). We identified statistically significant differences between different macroregions for dynapenia, IADL disability, and verbal fluency, with worse values in the North and Northeast regions. In the North and Northeast macroregions, nearly half of the subjects that presented executive dysfunction and IADL disability also had dynapenia. There was a more significant overlap in the prevalence of all four conditions in the North and Northeast regions (4.8% and 5.5%, respectively), whereas the overlap was smaller in the South (2.3%). There was also a smaller overlap in the prevalence of dynapenia and depression in the South (5.8%) compared with other macroregions. CONCLUSIONS Macroregions in Brazil exhibit marked differences in the prevalence of dynapenia and in its overlap with IADL disability, depression, and executive dysfunction.

Abstract
Research suggests an association between cerebrovascular health and cognitive decline, but previous work is limited by its cross-sectional nature or short (< 1-2 years) follow-up. Our aim was to examine, across 10 years of follow-up in healthy older adults, changes in cerebrovascular health and their relationship with subjective memory complaints as an early marker of cognitive decline. Between 2008 and 2010, twenty-eight healthy older adults (69 ± 4 years) underwent baseline blood pressure and transcranial Doppler measurements to assess middle cerebral artery blood velocity (MCAv), cerebrovascular resistance index (CVRi), and measures of cerebral autoregulation (CA). After 9-12 years of follow-up, these measurements were repeated, and presence of memory complaints was evaluated. Linear mixed-model analyses explored effects of aging on cerebrovascular parameters and whether memory complaints were associated with cerebrovascular changes. Across a median follow-up of 10.9 years, no changes in MCAv, CVRi, or CA were found. At baseline, these parameters were not different between subjects with (n = 15) versus without (n = 13) memory complaints. During follow-up, subjects with memory complaints showed larger decreases in MCAv (- 10% versus + 9%, P = 0.041) and increases in CVRi (+ 26% versus - 9%, P = 0.029) compared to other peers without memory complaints, but no distinct changes in CA parameters (P > 0.05). Although a decade of aging does not lead to deterioration in cerebral blood flow or autoregulation, our findings suggest that reductions in cerebral blood flow and increases in cerebrovascular resistance are associated with early subjective cognitive decline.

Abstract
Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate available evidence on the association between the human oral microbiota and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and summarize relevant data obtained during the pandemic. Methods We searched EMBASE, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library for human studies published up to October 2022. The main outcomes of the study were the differences in the diversity (α and β) and composition of the oral microbiota at the phylum and genus levels between patients with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection (CPs) and healthy controls (HCs). We used the Human Protein Atlas (HPA), Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis (GEPIA) database, Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network (STRING) and Gene enrichment analysis (Metascape) to evaluate the expression of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4) (which is the cell receptor of SARS CoV-2) in oral tissues and evaluate its correlation with viral genes or changes in the oral microbiota. Results Out of 706 studies, a meta-analysis of 9 studies revealed a significantly lower alpha diversity (Shannon index) in CPs than in HCs (standardized mean difference (SMD): -0.53, 95% confidence intervals (95% CI): -0.97 to -0.09). Subgroup meta-analysis revealed a significantly lower alpha diversity (Shannon index) in older than younger individuals (SMD: -0.54, 95% CI: -0.86 to -0.23/SMD: -0.52, 95% CI: -1.18 to 0.14). At the genus level, the most significant changes were in Streptococcus and Neisseria, which had abundances that were significantly higher and lower in CPs than in HCs based on data obtained from six out of eleven and five out of eleven studies, respectively. DPP4 mRNA expression in the oral salivary gland was significantly lower in elderly individuals than in young individuals. Spearman correlation analysis showed that DPP4 expression was negatively correlated with the expression of viral genes. Gene enrichment analysis showed that DPP4-associated proteins were mainly enriched in biological processes, such as regulation of receptor-mediated endocytosis of viruses by host cells and bacterial invasion of epithelial cells. Conclusion The oral microbial composition in COVID-19 patients was significantly different from that in healthy individuals, especially among elderly individuals. DPP4 may be related to viral infection and dysbiosis of the oral microbiome in elderly individuals.

Abstract
In Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, low levels of physical fitness (PF) and cognitive status are associated with high rates of depression. However, this condition can be improved through physical training. Objective The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of multimodal exercise training (MET) on aerobic endurance, muscular strength, agility, dynamic balance, cognitive status, and depressive symptoms in men with mild-to-moderate AD. Methods A total of 25 elderly men with a diagnosis of mild-to-moderate AD were randomly categorized into an MET or a control group. The subjects in the MET group participated in a 12-week, three sessions per week MET program that included resistance, balance, and aerobic exercises. While the participants in the control group did not perform any regular exercise training during this period. Patients' cognitive status and depressive symptoms were assessed by Mini-Mental State Examination and the Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (GDS-15) questionnaires. PF indicators such as aerobic endurance, muscular strength, agility, and dynamic balance, as well as cognitive status and depressive symptoms, were taken from all the subjects before and after MET. Results The participants in the MET group improved handgrip, upper and lower body strength, agility, dynamic balance, and depressive symptoms (p<0.05). The intervention had no significant effect on aerobic endurance and cognitive status (p>0.05). Conclusions MET is an effective strategy to improve muscular strength, agility, dynamic balance, and depressive symptoms in men with mild-to-moderate AD. It is recommended for AD patients to engage in this type of exercise to reduce AD complications.

Abstract
The precision of temporal multisensory integration is associated with specific aspects of physical functioning in ageing, including gait speed and incidents of falling. However, it is unknown if such an association exists between multisensory integration and grip strength, an important index of frailty and brain health and predictor of disease and mortality in older adults. Here, we investigated whether temporal multisensory integration is associated with longitudinal (eight-year) grip strength trajectories in a large sample of 2,061 older adults (mean age = 64.42 years, SD = 7.20; 52% female) drawn from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA). Grip strength (kg) for the dominant hand was assessed with a hand-held dynamometer across four testing waves. Longitudinal k-means clustering was applied to these data separately for sex (male, female) and age group (50-64, 65-74, 75+ years). At wave 3, older adults participated in the Sound Induced Flash Illusion (SIFI), a measure of the precision of temporal audio-visual integration, which included three audio-visual stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs): 70, 150 and 230 ms. Results showed that older adults with a relatively lower (i.e., weaker) grip strength were more susceptible to the SIFI at the longer SOAs compared to those with a relatively higher (i.e., stronger) grip strength (p <.001). These novel findings suggest that older adults with relatively weaker grip strength exhibit an expanded temporal binding window for audio-visual events, possibly reflecting a reduction in the integrity of the central nervous system.

Abstract
Background Recently, the association between handgrip strength (HGS) asymmetry and cognition has been revealed, but evidences are still scarce. Particularly, the association between asymmetric HGS and cognitive performance in various cognitive domains is unclear and whether this association is stable across ethnic groups is unknown. Method The population was from a longitudinal study in rural areas of Fuxin, Liaoning, China. The Chinese version of Montreal Cognitive Assessment-Basic (MOCA-BC) was used to evaluate the cognitive function. The HGS ratio was calculated as maximal non-dominant HGS divided by maximal dominant HGS. HGS ratio <0.9 or >1.1 was classified as asymmetric dominant/non-dominant HGS, respectively. Generalized linear models were used to analyze the relationship between asymmetric HGS and cognitive function adjusted for HGS, handedness, wave, age, sex, education, ethnicity, smoking, drinking, physical labor level, BMI, hypertension, diabetes and dyslipidemia. Result A total of 2,969 participants ≥50 years were included in this study. Adjusted for HGS and other confunding variables, there was an inverted U-shaped association between HGS ratio and MoCA-BC scores (P non-linear = 0.004). The association between HGS ratio and MoCA-BC scores was inconsistent among ethnic groups (P interaction = 0.048). In Han, only asymmetric non-dominant HGS was associated with lower cognitive scores [β = -0.67, 95% confidence interval (CI): -1.26 ∼-0.08, P = 0.027]; in Mongolians, asymmetric dominant HGS(β = -0.60, 95% CI: -1.35 ∼ 0.15, P = 0.115) and asymmetric non-dominant HGS (β = -0.56, 95% CI: -1.42 ∼ 0.31, P = 0.206) were all associated with lower cognitive scores, although no statistical significance was found. Asymmetric non-dominant HGS and lower HGS, but not asymmetric dominant HGS were all independently associated with impairment of Delayed Recall (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.05 ∼ 1.74; OR per 5 kg decrease = 1.10, 95% CI: 1.01 ∼ 1.21) and Fluency (OR = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.15 ∼ 1.78; OR per 5 kg decrease = 1.10, 95% CI: 1.02 ∼ 1.19). Both asymmetric dominant HGS (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.07 ∼ 1.67) and lower HGS (OR per 5 kg decrease = 1.21, 95% CI: 1.10 ∼ 1.32) were associated with impairment of visuoperception. Conclusion HGS and HGS asymmetry were all independently related to lower global cognitive performance. The association between HGS asymmetry and cognitive function varies among ethnic groups.

Abstract
Dementia is a detrimental neuropathologic condition with considerable physical, mental, social, and financial impact on patients and society. Patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS), a group of diseases that occur in tandem and increase the risk of neurologic diseases, have a higher risk of dementia. The ratio between muscle and adipose tissue is crucial in MetS, as these contain many hormones, including myokines and adipokines, which are involved in crosstalk and local paracrine/autocrine interactions. Evidence suggests that abnormal adipokine and myokine synthesis and release may be implicated in various MetS, such as atherosclerosis, diabetic mellitus (DM), and dyslipidemia, but their precise role is unclear. Abstract
In clinical practice, different drawing tests are used for the assessment of cognitive efficiency in the geriatric population. However, so far, the contribution of motor skills to drawing performance has not been sufficiently examined in the late adult life span. This study was aimed at disentangling the role played by motor functioning in three well-known drawing tests that in the clinical field are commonly used to detect some signs of cognitive impairment of older individuals. One hundred and forty-nine community dwellers (Mage = 77.4 years, SD = 5.9 years) completed a battery of tests assessing global cognitive efficiency, drawing skills (i.e., Clock Drawing, Visuo-spatial Drawing ACE-R, Copy Figures Tests), handgrip muscular strength (HGS), and functional mobility (assessed through the Timed-Up-and-Go test). Significant relationships were found among those measures. Moreover, handgrip strength and functional mobility explained 12-19% of the variance in each drawing condition. Finally, participants exhibiting poorer HGS performed worse the drawing tasks and were successively recognized as cognitively deteriorated. In conclusion, these findings highlight that motor skills can significantly impact the assessment of cognitive efficiency in late adulthood. Therefore, in clinical practice, the concurrent assessment of basic motor functions (in terms of muscular strength and functional mobility) and cognitive efficiency of the geriatric population at risk for cognitive decline should be encouraged.

Abstract
Inhibitory control is an executive function that is closely and bidirectionally related to sports practice. The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to study the effect of this relationship when response suppression is assessed within the Stop-Signal Paradigm. Twenty-four articles met the inclusion criteria and were selected for qualitative analysis, of which 11 studies were further analyzed through meta-analytic techniques. The standardized mean difference (SMD) was estimated for the stop-signal reaction time, and the influence of moderator variables was assessed. Athletes showed shorter stop-signal reaction time than non-athlete controls (SMD=0.44; 95% CI=0.14, 0.73), and this effect was mediated by age (SMD=-0.56; 95% CI=-1.11, -0.01). Athletes' superior stop-signal reaction time may be a result of extensive practice in cognitively demanding competitive environments. Young athletes can benefit the most from sports practice. In addition, engaging individuals in more cognitively demanding activities may obtain better response suppression enhancements, although the evidence in the stop-signal task is limited. Finally, some stop-signal task methodological aspects should be considered in future research.

Abstract
Study aim: To compare the effect of premodulated interferential current (PREMOD IFC) and diadynamic current (DD) with exercise training on the management of lateral elbow tendinopathy (LET).
Material and methods: One hundred and four patients with unilateral LET from both genders (55 females and 49 males) were randomly allocated into two groups. Group A received PREMOD IFC in addition to the exercises, and group B received DD with the same exercises. The outcomes were maximum grip strength assessed by the hand dynamometer, the pinch strength assessed by the pinch gauge dynamometer, and pain and functional disability of the forearm assessed by a patient-rated tennis elbow evaluation (PRTEE) questionnaire. All participants received electrical stimulation, consisting of three sessions per week for six weeks.
Results: The mean PRTEE score, and grip strength were significantly improved after six weeks in favour of group A, while there was no significant difference between the two groups in pinch strength. (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: The results revealed that the combination of PREMOD IFC with exercises could improve pain, functional disability, and grip strength compared to DD with exercises in LET patients without a significant difference between the two groups in pinch strength.

Abstract
Many clinical practice recommendations indicate rehabilitation as essential for patients with sequelae of severe or critical COVID-19 and suggest the prompt initiation of a multicomponent rehabilitation program focused on aerobic and endurance training. However, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) regarding aerobic exercise are lacking. Therefore, we aimed to assess the feasibility and effectiveness of the addition of aerobic training to standard rehabilitation in subjects with subacute COVID-19. Participants were 32/214 patients with the sequelae of severe or critical COVID-19 in the acute phase who were eligible and agreed to participate in the study (eligibility = 15%, recruitment = 100%). After randomization and assessment with functional and strength tests, all the participants underwent an inpatient-tailored rehabilitation program (50 min/day, 5 days/week, 10 sessions); in addition, the experimental group performed a low- to moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (30 min/day, 10 sessions). No dropouts or severe adverse events were reported, with an attendance rate of 95.6%. Most of the secondary outcomes significantly improved in both groups, but the improvement in the Functional Independence Measure and Cumulated Ambulation Score-Italian version was significantly greater in the experimental group (at least, p < 0.05). This RCT showed that aerobic exercise is feasible and safe in subacute COVID-19. Moreover, it appears to be beneficial and useful in improving patients' independence and mobility.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Aging is a process that includes progressive physiological changes. Grip strength is an important indicator of current health in the elderly. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to examine the correlation between dominant-hand grip strength (HGS) and cognitive function, mid-upper arm circumference, muscle-bone mass, balance, mobility, and daily life activities in elderly individuals living in nursing homes and determine the effect rates of these factors on HGS. METHODS: Seventy-two elderly individuals aged over 65 who lived in a nursing home were included in the study. Dominant HGS and mid-upper forearm circumference were measured. Muscle and bone masses were measured with bioelectrical impedance analysis. Mid-upper arm circumference was measured using a non-elastic tape. HGS was measured using a hand dynamometer. Cognitive function was evaluated with the Standardized Mini-Mental Test (SMMT); mobility and balance were evaluated with the Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT) and Berg Balance Scale (BBS); the Katz Activities of Daily Living Scale (KATZ ADL) was used to evaluate daily life activities. RESULTS: There was a significant correlation between HGS and muscle and bone masses (p < 0.001). A significant correlation was found between HGS and TUGT, ADL (p = 0.001, p = 0.016). There was no significant correlation between HGS and BBS (p = 0.2). There was a correlation between HGS and SMMT at the statistical significance limit (p = 0.055). On HGS, the Body Mass Index had a 64.9% effect; the muscle mass had a 30.9% effect; the TUGT had a 27.7% effect. These parameters were found to explain 59.9% of the variance. CONCLUSION: As a global indicator of muscle strength, HGS can be used to predict age-related functional changes. Approaches to increase physical activity levels in elderly can be effective in reducing age-related negativities.

Abstract
Cognitive function is essential for most behaviors of daily living and is a critical component in assessing the quality of life. Mounting prospective evidence supports the use of isometric handgrip exercise (IHE) as a small muscle mass practice to promote health-related outcomes in clinical and healthy populations. The aim of the present review was to systematically investigate whether IHE is effective in improving the cognitive function of adults (aged ≥18 years). Studies were identified by searching five databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, PsychINFO, and Web of Science). Eight out of 767 studies met the inclusion criteria, including three types of studies: 1) acute effect for IHE with various intensity protocols (n = 4); 2) acute effect for IHE with one set exhaustion protocol (n = 2); and 3) chronic effect of IHE on cognitive function (n = 2). To assess the methodological quality of studies, the PEDro scale was used (mean score = 6.75). The evidence on whether IHE exerts acute positive effects on cognitive performance is currently rather inconclusive. However, a trend was discernible that implementing IHE can generate a beneficial chronic effect on cognitive function, although the results should be interpreted with caution. The clinical relevance of IHE as a time-efficient type of physical exercise to improve cognitive function warrants further investigation. Abstract
Background Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common psychiatric disease and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Handgrip strength (HGS) as an objective physical fitness test is a practical index for identifying many diseases. Previous studies drew different conclusions about the relationship between HGS and MDD. Aims We aim to explore whether HGS has an effect on the risk of MDD. Methods HGS-related single-nucleotide polymorphisms identified by a genome-wide association study were used as instrumental variables in this Mendelian randomisation (MR) study. Summary data on MDD were obtained from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium. Four methods were applied, including inverse variance weighted (IVW), MR Egger, weighted median and weighted mode. Additional sensitivity analyses, including leave-one-out, heterogeneity test, pleiotropy test and confounders identification, were conducted to test the robustness of our results. Results Each 1 kg increase in left HGS is associated with a 21.95% reduction in the risk of MDD (ORIVW = 0.781, 95% CI: 0.650 to 0.937, p=0.009), while no significant correlation exists in the estimation of right HGS (p=0.146). Sensitivity analyses demonstrated statistical significance (βIVW = −0.195, p=0.023) after excluding some genetic loci that cause pleiotropy. Conclusions Increased left HGS is associated with a reduced risk of MDD. In the future, it may be used as an index for the clinical screening, observation and treatment of MDD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Grip strength is a widely used and well-validated measure of overall health that is increasingly understood to index risk for psychiatric illness and neurodegeneration in older adults. However, existing work has not examined how grip strength relates to a comprehensive set of mental health outcomes, which can detect early signs of cognitive decline. Furthermore, whether brain structure mediates associations between grip strength and cognition remains unknown. METHODS Based on cross-sectional and longitudinal data from over 40,000 participants in the UK Biobank, this study investigated the behavioral and neural correlates of handgrip strength using a linear mixed effect model and mediation analysis. RESULTS In cross-sectional analysis, we found that greater grip strength was associated with better cognitive functioning, higher life satisfaction, greater subjective well-being, and reduced depression and anxiety symptoms while controlling for numerous demographic, anthropometric, and socioeconomic confounders. Further, grip strength of females showed stronger associations with most behavioral outcomes than males. In longitudinal analysis, baseline grip strength was related to cognitive performance at ~9 years follow-up, while the reverse effect was much weaker. Further, baseline neuroticism, health, and financial satisfaction were longitudinally associated with subsequent grip strength. The results revealed widespread associations between stronger grip strength and increased grey matter volume, especially in subcortical regions and temporal cortices. Moreover, grey matter volume of these regions also correlated with better mental health and considerably mediated their relationship with grip strength. CONCLUSIONS Overall, using the largest population-scale neuroimaging dataset currently available, our findings provide the most well-powered characterization of interplay between grip strength, mental health, and brain structure, which may facilitate the discovery of possible interventions to mitigate cognitive decline during aging.

Abstract
Growing evidence about the link between cognitive and physical decline suggests the early changes in physical functioning as a potential biomarker for cognitive impairment. Thus, we compared grip-strength trajectories over 12-16 years in three groups classified according to their cognitive status (two stable patterns, normal and impaired cognitive performance, and a declining pattern) in two representative UK and Chilean older adult samples. The samples consisted of 7069 UK (ELSA) and 1363 Chilean participants (ALEXANDROS). Linear Mixed models were performed. Adjustments included socio-demographics and health variables. The Declined and Impaired group had significantly lower grip-strength at baseline when compared to the Non-Impaired. In ELSA, the Declined and Impaired showed a faster decline in their grip strength compared to the Non-Impaired group but differences disappeared in the fully adjusted models. In ALEXANDROS, the differences were only found between the Declined and Non-Impaired and they were partially attenuated by covariates. Our study provides robust evidence of the association between grip strength and cognitive performance and how socio-economic factors might be key to understanding this association and their variability across countries. This has implications for future epidemiological research, as hand-grip strength measurements have the potential to be used as an indicator of cognitive performance.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Objective measures of physical function are associated with cognitive function in community-dwelling older adults. Many older adults experience cognitive declines prior to cancer treatment initiation. Thus, it is unclear whether the association between low physical function and cognitive impairment is generalizable to older adults with cancer prior to treatment. Our objective was to examine whether objective measures of physical function were associated with cognitive impairment in geriatric oncology patients prior to treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS We used prospectively collected data from an institutional database within a cancer centre and electronic medical records of older adults who had undergone a geriatric assessment before cancer treatment. Objective measures of physical function included grip strength and the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Cognitive impairment was assessed via the Mini-Cog. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine whether grip strength and SPPB were associated with cognitive impairment prior to cancer treatment in all patients, as well as in patients with moderate-to-high comorbidity as part of a sensitivity analysis. RESULTS A total of 386 older adults (mean age 80.9 years) were included in the analysis. Most participants (65.3%) had low grip strength and/or low SPPB, whereas 42.2% were cognitively impaired. Neither low grip strength (odds ratio [OR] = 1.55, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.92-2.63, p = 0.097) nor low SPPB (OR = 1.29, 95%CI = 0.69-2.42, p = 0.41) alone or combined (OR = 1.05, 95%CI = 0.59-1.88, p = 0.85) were significantly associated with cognitive impairment in multivariable analyses of all patients. However, low SPPB was significantly associated with cognitive impairment in the sensitivity analysis restricted to patients with moderate-to-high comorbidity (OR = 4.05, 95%CI = 1.50-10.95, p = 0.006). Dependence in one or more instrumental activities of daily living [IADLs] was consistently associated with cognitive impairment in the main and sensitivity analyses. DISCUSSION Low physical performance and IADL dependence are associated with cognitive impairment in patients with moderate-to-high comorbidity prior to cancer treatment. Scrutiny is advised for these patients to assess for possible cognitive impairment. Larger studies are warranted to confirm our findings.

Abstract
Background: The relationship between grip strength and cognitive function remains no consensus in the older adults. Objective: To investigate the association of grip strength with cognitive function and cognitive performance in different domains. Methods: Participants of the present cross-sectional study were from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2014. Grip strength was measured by grip dynamometer, and combined handgrip strength was the sum of the largest reading from each hand. Four cognitive domains (immediate and delayed memory, language, and attention) were assessed by a set of neuropsychological tests. The subjective cognitive decline was determined via self-report. Results: Among 2,618 participants, combined grip strength was positively associated with scores on global cognitive function and each cognitive domain after controlling for demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, and history of disease. In addition, compared to those with grip strength < 46.7 kg, participants with grip strength≥75.3 kg had odds ratios of 0.36 (95% CI: 0.21 to 0.63) for poor global cognitive function, 0.66 (95% CI: 0.38 to 1.13) for poor immediate memory, 0.53 (95% CI: 0.30 to 0.93) for poor delayed memory, 0.48 (95% CI: 0.27 to 0.86) for poor language function, 0.20 (95% CI: 0.11 to 0.35) for poor attention, and 0.36 (95% CI: 0.18 to 0.73) for subjective cognitive decline in fully adjusted model. Conclusion: Older adults with higher grip strength were significantly associated with better performance on cognition function included global and various domains such as memory, language, attention, and subjective cognitive decline.

Abstract
Background Postoperative neurocognitive dysfunction remains a significant problem in vulnerable groups such as the elderly. While experimental data regarding its possible pathogenic mechanisms accumulate, therapeutic options for this disorder are limited. In this study, we evaluated the neuroprotective effect of a period of preconditioning resistant training on aged mice undergoing abdominal surgery. Further, we examined the underlying mechanisms from the perspective of neuroinflammatory state and synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus. Methods 18-month-old C57BL/6N mice were trained for 5 weeks using a ladder-climbing protocol with progressively increasing weight loading. Preoperative baseline body parameters, cognitive performance and neuroinflammatory states were assessed and compared between sedentary and trained groups of 9-month-old and 18-month-old mice. To access the neuroprotective effect of resistance training on postoperative aged mice, both sedentary and trained mice were subjected to a laparotomy under 3% sevoflurane anesthesia. Cognitive performance on postoperative day 14, hippocampal neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction and synaptic plasticity were examined and compared during groups. Results 18-month-old mice have increased body weight, higher peripheral and central inflammatory status, reduction in muscle strength and cognitive performance compared with middle-aged 9-month-old mice, which were improved by resistance exercise. In the laparotomy group, prehabilitative resistant exercise improved cognitive performance and synaptic plasticity, reduced inflammatory factors and glial cells activation after surgery. Furthermore, resistance exercise activated hippocampal PGC-1α/BDNF/Akt/GSK-3β signaling and improved mitochondrial biogenesis, as well as ameliorated mitochondrial dynamics in postoperative-aged mice. Conclusions Resistance exercise reduced risk factors for perioperative neurocognitive disorders such as increased body weight, elevated inflammatory markers, and pre-existing cognitive impairment. Accordantly, preoperative resistance exercise improved surgery-induced adverse effects including cognitive impairment, synaptic deficit and neuroinflammation, possibly by facilitate mitochondrial health through the PGC1-a/BDNF pathway. Abstract
OBJECTIVES The multifinger force deficit (MFFD) is the decline in force generated by an individual finger as the number of fingers contributing to the action is increased. It has been proposed that as a measure of neural sufficiency rather than muscle status, it provides a means of detecting individuals at risk of cognitive decline. Age-related deficits in central neural drive exert a disproportionate impact on the rate at which force can be generated. We examined whether a MFFD derived from the maximum rate at which force is generated, is more sensitive to individual differences in cognitive status, than one calculated using the maximum level of force. METHODS Monotonic associations between each of two variants of the MFFD, and cognition (measured with the Montreal Cognitive Assessment), were estimated cross sectionally using generalized partial rank correlations, in which age, level of education and degree of handedness were included as covariates. The participants (n=26) were community dwelling adults aged 66-87. RESULTS The MFFD derived using the maximum rate of force development was negatively associated with cognitive status. The association for the MFFD based on the maximum level of force, was not statistically reliable. The associations with cognitive status obtained for both variants of the MFFD were of greater magnitude than those reported previously for standard grip strength dynamometry. CONCLUSION The sensitivity with which the MFFD detects risk of cognitive decline may be enhanced by using the maximum rate of force developed by each finger, rather than the maximum force generated by each finger.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a progressive cognitive decline, mostly prominent in the domain of memory, but also associated with other cognitive deficits and non-cognitive symptoms. Reduced muscle strength is common in AD. However, the current understanding of its relationship with cognitive decline is limited. This study investigates the relationship between muscle strength and cognition in patients with AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). We enrolled 148 consecutive subjects, including 74 patients with probable AD dementia, 37 MCI, and 37 controls. Participants underwent neuropsychological evaluation focused on attention, working memory, declarative memory and learning. Muscle strength and muscle mass were measured through hand dynamometer and bio-electrical impedance analysis, respectively. Patients with AD dementia were divided with respect to the severity of cognitive impairment into mild and moderate-to-severe patients. Moderate-to-severe patients with AD presented lower handgrip strength than MCI and controls. No differences were observed in muscle mass. In MCI and AD dementia, handgrip strength was associated with overall cognitive functioning, attentional and memory performance. The routine implementation of handgrip strength assessment in the clinical work-up of patients with MCI and AD could potentially represent a simple method to monitor functional and cognitive decline along the disease course.

Abstract
Background Assessing motor function is a simple way to track cognitive impairment. We analysed the associations between cognitive and motor function and assessed the predictive value of two motor function measuring tools for cognitive impairment in older adults with multimorbidity in primary care settings. Methods We conducted a prospective cohort study with a 1 year follow-up. Patients aged ≥60 years with ≥2 morbidities were recruited from four primary care clinics. Motor function was assessed using handgrip strength and a sarcopenia screening scale (SARC-F). Cognitive function was measured using the Hong Kong Montreal Cognitive Assessment (HK-MoCA). We defined cognitive impairment as an HK-MoCA score < 22. The associations between cognitive and motor functions were examined from a bidirectional perspective. Results We included 477 participants (mean age 69.4, 68.6% female) with a mean (SD) HK-MoCA score of 25.5 (3.38), SARC-F score of 1.1 (1.36), and handgrip strength of 21.2 (6.99) kg at baseline. Multivariable linear regression models showed bidirectional cross-sectional associations of the HK-MoCA score and cognitive impairment with SARC-F score and handgrip strength at baseline and 1 year. Cox regression revealed a longitudinal association between baseline handgrip strength and cognitive impairment at 1 year (hazard ratio: 0.48, 95% CI 0.33–0.69) but no longitudinal association between SARC-F and cognitive impairment. Variation in the SARC-F score increased with decreasing HK-MoCA score (Brown–Forsythe test F statistic = 17.9, p < 0.001), while variability in the handgrip strength remained small (modified signed-likelihood ratio test, p < 0.001). Conclusions Primary healthcare providers may use handgrip strength to track cognitive function decline in older adults with multimorbidity. However, the SARC-F scale may not have the same predictive value. Further research is needed to evaluate the performance and variability of the SARC-F score in individuals with poor cognitive function. UNLABELLED When people experience or expect pain, they move differently. Pain-altered movement strategies, collectively described here as pain-related movement dysfunction (PRMD), may persist well after pain resolves and, ultimately, may result in altered kinematics and kinetics, future reinjury, and disability. Although PRMD may manifest as abnormal movements that are often evident in clinical assessment, the underlying mechanisms are complex, engaging sensory-perceptual, cognitive, psychological, and motor processes. Motor control theories provide a conceptual framework to determine, assess, and target processes that contribute to normal and abnormal movement and thus are important for physical therapy and rehabilitation practice. Contemporary understanding of motor control has evolved from reflex-based understanding to a more complex task-dependent interaction between cognitive and motor systems, each with distinct neuroanatomic substrates. Though experts have recognized the importance of motor control in the management of painful conditions, there is no comprehensive framework that explicates the processes engaged in the control of goal-directed actions, particularly in the presence of pain. This Perspective outlines sensory-perceptual, cognitive, psychological, and motor processes in the contemporary model of motor control, describing the neural substrates underlying each process and highlighting how pain and anticipation of pain influence motor control processes and consequently contribute to PRMD. Finally, potential lines of future inquiry-grounded in the contemporary model of motor control-are outlined to advance understanding and improve the assessment and treatment of PRMD. IMPACT This Perspective proposes that approaching PRMD from a contemporary motor control perspective will uncover key mechanisms, identify treatment targets, inform assessments, and innovate treatments across sensory-perceptual, cognitive, and motor domains, all of which have the potential to improve movement and functional outcomes in patients with painful conditions.

Abstract
Background Identification of cognitive impairment is based traditionally on the neuropsychological tests and biomarkers that are not available widely. This study aimed to establish the association between motor function (gait speed and handgrip strength) and cognitive performance in the Mini-Mental State Examination, globally and by domains. A secondary goal was calculating a cut-off point for gait speed and handgrip strength to classify older adults as cognitively impaired. Methods This is a secondary analysis of SABE Colombia (Salud, Bienestar & Envejecimiento), a survey that was conducted in 2015 on health, wellbeing, and aging in Colombia. This study used linear regression models to search for an association between motor function and cognitive performance. The accuracy of motor function measurements in identifying cognitive impairment was assessed with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. This study also analyzed other clinical and sociodemographical variables. Results Gait speed was associated with orientation (r2 = 0.16), language (r2 = 0.15), recall memory (r2 = 0.14), and counting (r2 = 0.08). Similarly, handgrip strength was associated with orientation (r2 = 0.175), language (r2 = 0.164), recall memory (r2 = 0.137), and counting (r2 = 0.08). To differentiate older adults with and without cognitive impairment, a gait speed cut-off point of 0.59 m/s had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.629 (0.613–0.646), and a weak handgrip (strength below 17.5 kg) had an AUC of 0.653 (0.645-0.661). The cut-off points for handgrip strength and gait speed were significantly higher in male participants. Conclusions Gait speed and handgrip strength are similarly associated with the cognitive performance, exhibiting the most extensive association with orientation and language domains of the Mini-Mental State Examination. Gait speed and handgrip strength can easily be measured by any clinician, and they prove to be useful screening tools to detect cognitive impairment.

Abstract
Older adults with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) who in addition to their memory deficits also suffer from frontal-executive dysfunctions have a higher risk of developing dementia later in their lives than older adults with aMCI without executive deficits and older adults with non-amnestic MCI (naMCI). Handgrip strength (HGS) is also correlated with the risk of cognitive decline in the elderly. Hence, the current study aimed to investigate the associations between HGS and executive functioning in individuals with aMCI, naMCI and healthy controls. Older, right-handed adults with amnestic MCI (aMCI), non-amnestic MCI (naMCI), and healthy controls (HC) conducted a handgrip strength measurement via a handheld dynamometer. Executive functions were assessed with the Trail Making Test (TMT A&B). Normalized handgrip strength (nHGS, normalized to Body Mass Index (BMI)) was calculated and its associations with executive functions (operationalized through z-scores of TMT B/A ratio) were investigated through partial correlation analyses (i.e., accounting for age, sex, and severity of depressive symptoms). A positive and low-to-moderate correlation between right nHGS (rp (22) = 0.364; p = 0.063) and left nHGS (rp (22) = 0.420; p = 0.037) and executive functioning in older adults with aMCI but not in naMCI or HC was observed. Our results suggest that higher levels of nHGS are linked to better executive functioning in aMCI but not naMCI and HC. This relationship is perhaps driven by alterations in the integrity of the hippocampal-prefrontal network occurring in older adults with aMCI. Further research is needed to provide empirical evidence for this assumption.

Abstract
AbstractThe contribution of motor efficiency to the maintenance of psychological well-being in cognitively impaired older individuals is still insufficiently examined. This investigation primarily intended to evaluate whether muscular strength mediates the relationship between different facets of psychological well-being (i.e., personal satisfaction, emotional competence, coping), negative mood, and central executive efficiency through the Clock-Drawing, Trail-Making (Part A), and verbal fluency tests. Furthermore, the impact of cognitive decline on self-reported psychological well-being and depression was explored, using the handgrip strength (HGS) measure as a covariate. One hundred and nineteen older participants, 44 males and 75 females, aged 63 years and older (Mage = 77.7 years, SD = 5.6 years), completed a battery of tests assessing executive functions, HGS, depression, and psychological well-being. Significant low to moderate associations were found between distinct executive functions, HGS, psychological well-being, and depression. In addition, personal satisfaction did not correlate with any measure of executive functions, the clock-drawing score was associated only with coping index, and self-reported depression correlated only with the Trail-Making Test score. Moreover, a series of mediation analyses documented that executive functions (primarily assessing verbal fluency and motor speed) and HGS explained approximately 20–46% of the variance in perceived psychological well-being and depression. Finally, more cognitively impaired participants reported worse total psychological well-being, emotional competence, and coping. In conclusion, motor proficiency mediates the relationship between selective measures of executive functions and perceived psychological well-being and depression in cognitively impaired individuals.

Abstract
Background Frailty and cognitive impairment are significant problems faced by older adults, which have a significant impact on their activities of daily living, social activities, and quality of life. Design Cross-sectional study. Methods A total of 252 older adults in two communities in Yangzhou were randomly selected. The cognitive function of the elderly was assessed using the Memory and Executive Screening (MES). The frailty phenotype was used to evaluate the frail situation of older adults. The activity of daily living (ADL), functional activities questionnaire (FAQ), and European quality of 5-dimensions (EQ-5D) were used to evaluate health outcomes in the elderly. SEM was used to explore the direct and indirect relationship among cognitive function, frailty and health outcomes. Results There was a significant direct correlation between cognitive function and frailty; the direct effect was −0.521. The influence path of cognitive function on health outcomes included direct and indirect effects; the total effect was −0.759. The effect of frailty on health outcomes included direct and indirect effects; the total effect was 0.440. Conclusion According to SEM, cognitive function interacts with frailty and may reduce the quality of life, the ADL, and social activities among older adults directly and indirectly, so future assessments of older adults should consider both cognitive function and frailty, so as to further improve the health outcome of the elderly. When formulating relevant intervention measures in the future, we need to consider that it cannot only improve the cognitive function, but also improve the frail situation, so as to jointly improve the health outcomes of older adults.

Abstract
Accumulating research indicates that handgrip strength is associated with cognitive function. Studies have also shown the difference in cognitive decline between males and females. We investigated the association between baseline handgrip strength and later cognitive function in older adults according to sex using the dataset from Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (2006–2018). Overall, 9707 observations of 1750 participants (989 males and 761 females) over 65 years of age were sampled from the first wave, followed by six consecutive waves. The Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination and baseline handgrip strength scores were assessed. Sociodemographic and health-related variables were also included as covariates in the multivariable linear mixed models. Males in the lowest quartile of the baseline handgrip strength decreased in cognitive function (β = −0.54, standard error (SE) = 0.16, p < 0.001), compared to males in the highest quartile. For females, those in the second lowest quartile (β = −0.65, SE = 0.19, p < 0.001) and the lowest quartile (β = −0.53, SE = 0.19, p< 0.01) decreased in cognitive function. Handgrip strength may be positively associated with later cognitive function, but the association may be non-linear and differ between sexes. Sex-specific preventive assessment of handgrip strength may help identify older adults at risk for cognitive impairment.
