Hazardous heavy metals contamination of vegetables and food chain: Role of sustainable remediation approaches - A review

Heavy metal accumulation in root and shoot tapioca plant biomass grown in agriculture land situated around the magnesite mine tailings

Heavy metal pollution in soil has emerged as a major environmental concern. This can be attributed to human activities such as mining, modern agriculture, and industrialization. This study was conducted to determine how heavy metals spread from mine tailings to surrounding farmland. Metal absorption and accumulation were also investigated in the root and shoot biomass of tapioca crops grown in those farmlands. Metal concentrations in MTAS1 were 85.3 ± 1.2, 45.8 ± 1.5, 134.8 ± 1.7, 92.4 ± 2.2, and 78.95 ± 1.4 mg kg-1, respectively. Heavy metal concentrations in MTAS2 and MTAS3 were found to be 79.62 ± 1.6, 75.4 ± 1.5, 41.31 ± 1.1, 47.8 ± 1.6, 142.5 ± 2.1, 128.4 ± 1.4, 86.2 ± 1.9, 79.5 ± 1.3, and 83.4 ± 1.2 mg kg-1, respectively. Tapioca crop shoot and root biomass grown at these metal polluted sites absorbed and accumulated significant amounts of Cd, Cu, Zn, Pb, Ni, and Mn. Notably, the metal content of the tapioca crop's root and shoot biomass exceeded national standards.

Selenium alleviates chromium stress and promotes chromium uptake in As-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata: Cr reduction and cellar distribution

Arsenic-hyperaccumulator Pteris vittata exhibits remarkable absorption ability for chromium (Cr) while beneficial element selenium (Se) helps to reduce Cr-induced stress in plants. However, the effects of Se on the Cr uptake and the associated mechanisms in P. vittata are unclear, which were investigated in this study. P. vittata plants were grown for 14 days in 0.2-strength Hoagland solution containing 10 (Cr10) or 100 μM (Cr100) chromate (CrVI) and 1 μM selenate (Se1). The plant biomass, malondialdehyde contents, total Cr and Se contents, Cr speciation, expression of genes associated with Cr uptake, and Cr subcellular distribution in P. vittata were determined. P. vittata effectively accumulated Cr by concentrating 96-99% in the roots under Cr100 treatment. Further, Se substantially increased its Cr contents by 98% to 11,596 mg kg-1 in the roots, which may result from Se's role in reducing its oxidative stress as supported by 27-62% reduction in the malondialdehyde contents. Though supplied with CrVI, up to 98% of the Cr in the roots was reduced to insoluble chromite (CrIII), with 83-89% being distributed on root cell walls. Neither Cr nor Se upregulated the expression of sulfate transporters PvSultr1;1-1;2 or phosphate transporter PvPht1;4, indicating their limited role in Cr uptake. P. vittata effectively accumulates Cr in the roots mainly as CrIII on cell walls and Se effectively enhances its Cr uptake by reducing its oxidative stress. Our study suggests that Se can be used to enhance P. vittata Cr uptake and reduce its oxidative stress, which may have application in phytostabilization of Cr-contaminated soils.

A combined bibliometric and sustainable approach of phytostabilization towards eco-restoration of coal mine overburden dumps

Extraction of coal through opencast mining leads to the buildup of heaps of overburden (OB) material, which poses a significant risk to production safety and environmental stability. A systematic bibliometric analysis to identify research trends and gaps, and evaluate the impact of studies and authors in the field related to coal OB phytostabilization was conducted. Key issues associated with coal extraction include land degradation, surface and groundwater contamination, slope instability, erosion and biodiversity loss. Handling coal OB material intensifies such issues, initiating additional environmental and physical challenges. The conventional approach such as topsoiling for OB restoration fails to restore essential soil properties crucial for sustainable vegetation cover. Phytostabilization approach involves establishing a self-sustaining plant cover over OB dump surfaces emerges as a viable strategy for OB restoration. This method enhanced by the supplement of organic amendments boosts the restoration of OB dumps by improving rhizosphere properties conducive to plant growth and contaminant uptake. Criteria essential for plant selection in phytostabilization are critically evaluated. Native plant species adapted to local climatic and ecological conditions are identified as key agents in stabilizing contaminants, reducing soil erosion, and enhancing ecosystem functions. Applicable case studies of successful phytostabilization of coal mines using native plants, offering practical recommendations for species selection in coal mine reclamation projects are provided. This review contributes to sustainable approaches for mitigating the environmental consequences of coal mining and facilitates the ecological recovery of degraded landscapes.

Regional food consumption in Italy, a life cycle analysis

Urbanization and globalization have led to an increasing concern and focus on the sustainability of the food sector, particularly in discussing the composition of consumers' diets. This study examines Italian consumption habits, categorizing them into four macro-geographical areas (North-West, North-East, Center, South, and Islands), utilizing public data obtained from surveys including 3323 individuals, and assesses their environmental impacts through the application of the Life Cycle Assessment methodology. The findings unveil distinct dietary patterns across Italian macro-regions, indicative of cultural disparities, and present avenues for promoting environmentally sustainable dietary choices. The study identifies meat consumption as the primary environmental concern across all macro-regions, with fish emerging as a secondary contributor to particulate matter formation. Pork and poultry exhibit notable impacts within toxicity-related categories. Additionally, the research underscores challenges in data collection, notably the absence of a site-specific Italian database, and underscores the necessity for more recent consumption data to accurately capture contemporary Italian dietary habits. Finally, the study demonstrates that addressing the issue from a macro-regional perspective allows for more targeted and dedicated cultural interventions.

Investigating Trace and Macro-element Composition of Herbal and Nutraceutical Dietary Supplements Marketed in Oman: Insights into Safety and Labeling

With the global increase in the use of dietary supplements to provide nutrients in one's regular diet, these supplements' potential health risks and benefits have become a topic of significant interest. Interestingly, as dietary supplements, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States (USA), Europe, and most countries do not require manufacturers and distributors to obtain approval or provide safety assessments before marketing those products. This research explores for the first time 16 heavy, trace and macro-elemental contents, namely, As, Ni, Cd, Pb, Cu, Co, Mn, Cr, Zn, V, Fe, Al, K, Na, Mg, and Ca, within 24 nutraceutical and herbal supplements marketed in Oman. The research is focusing on ensuring their compositions, concentrations, and freedom of toxic elements. ICP-OES was utilized, preceded by a microwave digestion technique to digest the samples in concentrated HNO3 and HCl (3:1, v/v). The method was validated within linear ranges of 0.03-5.00 ppm and 1.0-200.0 ppm for micro- and macro-elements, respectively, with %recoveries ranging from 90 to 104%. The limits of detection ranged from 0.01 to 0.09 and 0.14 to 0.30 ppm, while the limits of quantification ranged from 0.03 to 0.28 and 0.46 to 0.91 ppm for micro- and macro-elements, respectively. The detected levels were compared to online databases for risk assessment. Although As and Cd were not detected in all samples, Pb was found in nine samples, with some exceeding regulated limits of exposure. About 80% of the samples contained Al, of which two samples were susceptible to serious health risks of exceeding exposure limits in their compiled doses. The locally harvested Omani herbal supplements revealed significant amounts of Zn, Mg, Mn, and Cu. The results highlighted the potential risks associated with both dosage compliance and labeling discrepancies.

Health Risk Assessment for Potentially Toxic Elements Accumulation in Amaranthaceae Family Cultivars and their Correlation with Antioxidants and Antinutrients

Delhi's agricultural hub, nestled along the Yamuna floodplains, faces soil and water contamination issues. Utilizing organic waste composts is gaining traction to improve soil quality, but uncertainties remain about their efficacy in reducing harmful elements. The study examined three Amaranthaceae cultivars, comparing organic waste composts with chemical fertilizer to evaluate correlations between heavy metals, antioxidants, and antinutrients to assess their bioremediation potential. "Heavy metals" or "potentially toxic elements (PTE)" levels in soil and leaves were measured by ICP-MS, while antioxidants and antinutrients were analyzed with UV-VIS spectroscopy. The study revealed higher PTE levels in floodplain soil, with Cr, Ni, and Cd exceeding safe limits in all cultivars. Compost amendments reduced these pollutants by 28% compared to chemical fertilizers, decreasing bioaccumulation by 20%. Health risk assessments showed lower risks in compost-amended cultivars. Additionally, compost amendment displayed a stronger negative correlation between PTE and antioxidants, suggesting effective bioremediation. Overall, compost amendments offer promise for mitigating PTE in metropolitan floodplains.

Comprehensive assessment of heavy metal pollution of agricultural soils impacted by the Kalsaka abandoned gold mine and artisanal gold mining in northern Burkina Faso

In this study, the environmental quality of agricultural soils around the Kalsaka abandoned gold mine was evaluated. A total of 117 samples including industrial mine wastes, topsoil, and control soil were collected in and around the mine, and their heavy metal concentrations were determined using ICP-MS after aqua regia digestion. Except for Zn, the average concentrations of the metals were higher in mine wastes and the agricultural soils than their average upper continental crust (UCC) counterpart, whereas those of Ag, As, and Hg exceeded the UCC in the control soils. The control soils had the lowest contaminations and the lowest pollution levels for all metals except for Hg. Based on the average concentrations and coefficients of variation, it can be concluded that Cr, Ni, and Zn abundance in the agricultural soils was controlled by natural factors, whereas that of Ag, As, Hg, Co, Cu, and Mn was mainly associated with mining. The absence of Hg in industrial mine wastes and its high contents in agricultural and control soils reflected the artisanal gold mining source of this metal. Thus, single and integrated pollution indices showed that ecological risk and toxicity are much higher when Hg is included in the index calculation, suggesting cumulative effects of industrial and artisanal gold mining on the agricultural soil quality. The results also showed that Hg and As are the pollutants of major concern in the Kalsaka abandoned gold mine. Because of its proximity to human settlements, the Kalsaka abandoned gold mine necessitates an immediate rehabilitation.

Prediction of the bioaccessibility and accumulation of cadmium in the soil-rice-human system based on optimized DGT and BCR coupled models

Cadmium, as a typical heavy metal, has the potential to induce soil pollution and threaten human health through the soil-plant-human pathway. The conventional evaluation method based on the total content in soil cannot accurately represent the content migrated from the food chain to plants and the human body. Previous studies focused on the process of plant enrichment of heavy metals in soil, and very few studies directly predicted human exposure or risk through the labile state of Cd in soil. Hence, a relatively accurate and convenient prediction model of Cd release and translocation in the soil-rice-human system was developed. This model utilizes available Cd and soil parameters to predict the bioavailability of Cd in soil, as well as the in vitro bioaccessibility of Cd in cooked rice. The bioavailability of Cd was determined by the Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films technology and BCR sequential extraction procedure, offering in-situ quantification, which presents a significant advantage over traditional monitoring methods and aligns closely with the actual uptake of heavy metals by plants. The experimental results show that the prediction model based on the concentration of heavy metal forms measured by BCR sequential extraction procedure and diffusive gradients in thin-films technique can accurately predict the Cd uptake in rice grains, gastric and gastrointestinal phase (R2=0.712, 0.600 and 0.629). This model accurately predicts Cd bioavailability and bioaccessibility across the soil-rice-human pathway, informing actual human Cd intake, offering scientific support for developing more effective risk assessment methods.

Sulfhydryl-functionalized 3D MXene-AuNPs enabled electrochemical sensors for the selective determination of Pb2+, Cu2+ and Hg2+ in grain

Herein, we made 3D MXene-AuNPs by in situ growth of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on the surface of MXene by chemical reduction method, and then introduced three sulfhydryl (-SH) compounds as functionalized modifiers attached to the AuNPs to form a highly selective composite material for the detection of Pb2+, Cu2+, and Hg2+, respectively. The doping of AuNPs changes the microstructure of 2D MXene and generates more active sites. On a sensing platform based on ITO array electrodes, the detection system was optimised with sensitivities up to 1.157, 0.846 and 0.799 μA·μg-1Lcm-2 (Pb2+, Cu2+, and Hg2+). The selectivity of MXene@AuNPs was effectively improved by sulfhydryl group modification. In the range of 1-1300 μg L-1, the detection limits of three ions were 0.07, 0.13 and 0.21 μg L-1. In addition, this method can efficiently and accurately detect heavy metal ions in four cereal samples with consistent results with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry.

Multi-element Contamination and Health Risks in Green Leafy Vegetables from Ambagarh Chowki, Chhattisgarh, India

Leafy plants are commonly consumed as vegetables in India due to their high nutrient and vitamin content. This study, conducted in Ambagarh Chowki (India), investigated the accumulation potential of 52 elements (including Al, As, Ba, Be, Bi, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cu, Dy, Er, Eu, Fe, Ga, Gd, Ge, Ho, K, La, Li, Lu, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Nb, Nd, Ni, P, Pb, Pr, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sm, Sn, Sr, Tb, Te, Th, Ti, Tl, Tm, U, V, W, Y, Yb, and Zn) in seven leafy vegetable species, namely Amaranthus tricolor L., Corchorus olitorius L., Cordia myxa L., Hibiscus sabdariffa L., Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam., Moringa oleifera Lam., and Spinacia oleracea L. Technique: Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was employed for analysis. The maximum concentrations of elements such as Al, Ba, Be, Bi, Cd, Co, Cr, Fe, Ga, Ge, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sb, Th, Tl, U, V, W, and REEs were observed in S. oleracea leaves, indicating their highest accumulation potential. In contrast, the maximum concentrations of As were found in H. sabdariffa leaves; Ca and Si in M. oleifera leaves; Mg, Sr, and Mo in A. tricolor leaves; and P, K, Cu, and Zn in C. myxa leaves, respectively. Twenty-one elements (Cr, Cd, Pb, Ni, Co, V, Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Th, Sb, Ba, Be, Li, Sr, Tl, U, Se, Sn, and REEs) exceeded permissible limits set by the WHO. The elevated hazard index values indicated significant non-carcinogenic effects. The sources of these elements could be attributed to a combination of geological factors and agricultural practices. This study highlights the need for further investigation into the potential health implications of consuming these vegetables in the aforementioned region.

Impact of low molecular weight organic acids on heavy metal(loid) desorption in biochar-amended paddy soil

Low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) are important soil components and play a key role in regulating the geochemical behavior of heavy metal(loid)s. Biochar (BC) is a commonly used amendment that could change LMWOAs in soil. Here, four LMWOAs of oxalic acid (OA), tartaric acid (TA), malic acid (MA), and citric acid (CA) were evaluated for their roles in changing Cd and SB desorption behavior in contaminated soil with (S1-BC) or without BC (S1) produced from Paulownia biowaste. The results showed that OA, TA, MA, and CA reduced soil pH with rising concentrations, and biochar partially offset the pH reduction by LMWOAs. The LMWOAs reduced Cd desorption from the soil at low concentrations but increased Cd desorption at high concentrations, and CA was the most powerful in this regard. The LMWOAs had a similar effect on Sb desorption, and CA was the most effective species of LMWOAs. Adding BC to the soil affects Cd and Sb dynamics by reducing the Cd desorption but increasing Sb desorption from the soil and increasing the distribution coefficient (Kd) values of Cd but lowering the Kd values of Sb. This study helped understand the effects of LMWOAs on the geochemical behavior of Cd and Sb in the presence of biochar, as well as the potential risks of biochar amendment in enhancing Sb desorption from contaminated soil.

Biomonitoring and Biomathematical Modeling of Health Risks Associated with Dumpsite Grown Vegetables in Lagos State

Conversion of dumpsites to farm lands in several communities is a usual practice in Nigeria. Wastes accumulate heavy metals in a variety of forms. This study assessed the concentration, degrees of contamination, and attendant health risk of heavy metals (HMs), using two major indigenous vegetables (Amaranthus viridis and Talinum triangulare) grown on five major dumpsites in Lagos state. After wet digestion, the mean concentrations of the HMs in the vegetable samples were evaluated using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). Daily intake of metals (DIM), target hazard quotient (THQ), and hazard index (HI) biomathematics were employed in the assessment of non-carcinogenic health risk. Incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) assessment was used to assess carcinogenicity. The obtained result shows that the concentrations of HMs fell within the following ranges: (0.37 to 0.59), (0.07 to 1.36), (0.30 to 1.92), (0.00 to 0.03), and (0.00 to 0.04) mg/kg; for zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), Iron (Fe), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr), respectively, with low to moderate variability. At Ikorodu dumping site, the Pb concentration was above the World Health Organization (WHO) permissible range and has the highest contamination factor. DIM for Pb was also above threshold values (> 1) in both adults and children, while the THQ values for Fe, Pb, and Cd were above 1 (> 1) in both adults and children. HI values for the vegetables exceeded WHO normal range (> 1), except Abule-Egba dumps' samples (70% HI greater than 1 in adults and 90% HI greater than 1 in children). Additionally, the ILCR values of above 50% of the samples were above the WHO (10-6) limits, with the highest value in children (Cd, 1.064 × 10-3) indicating high risk of carcinogenicity over a life time of exposure. Thus, the results revealed great health risk from consumption of vegetables from the four major dumping sites, with children being at greater risk.

Recent trends in the phytoremediation of radionuclide contamination of soil by cesium and strontium: Sources, mechanisms and methods: A comprehensive review

This comprehensive review examines recent trends in phytoremediation strategies to address soil radionuclide contamination by cesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr). Radionuclide contamination, resulting from natural processes and nuclear-related activities such as accidents and the operation of nuclear facilities, poses significant risks to the environment and human health. Cs and Sr, prominent radionuclides involved in nuclear accidents, exhibit chemical properties that contribute to their toxicity, including easy uptake, high solubility, and long half-lives. Phytoremediation is emerging as a promising and environmentally friendly approach to mitigate radionuclide contamination by exploiting the ability of plants to extract toxic elements from soil and water. This review focuses specifically on the removal of 90Sr and 137Cs, addressing their health risks and environmental implications. Understanding the mechanisms governing plant uptake of radionuclides is critical and is influenced by factors such as plant species, soil texture, and physicochemical properties. Phytoremediation not only addresses immediate contamination challenges but also provides long-term benefits for ecosystem restoration and sustainable development. By improving soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem resilience, phytoremediation is in line with global sustainability goals and environmental protection initiatives. This review aims to provide insights into effective strategies for mitigating environmental hazards associated with radionuclide contamination and to highlight the importance of phytoremediation in environmental remediation efforts.

Heavy Metals Accumulation in Vegetables and Its Consequences on Human Health in the Areas Influenced by Industrial Activities

The degradation of the environment due to numerous industrial practices has emerged as a major issue globally, particularly in a country like Bangladesh. The present study dispenses information about heavy metal (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) contamination in some frequently consumed vegetables, namely, ash pumpkin, potato, bitter gourd, buffalo spinach, snake gourd, and pointed gourd grown in an industrially prone location and their repercussion on consumers' health. Proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) technique was used as the major analytical tool to detect heavy metal concentrations. Mean concentration and the range of Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in vegetables were detected (4.81 ± 2.79, 2.43-10.94), (497.57 ± 258.08, 181.24-886.67), (644.49 ± 298.40, 179.56-998.78), (38.88 ± 14.31, 18.88-60.12), (58.11 ± 12.58, 42.55-84.79), (137.24 ± 48.37, 71.99-208.98), (123.31 ± 63.62, 49.97-256.09), (8.09 ± 2.69, 4.29-14.94), and (4.16 ± 2.95, 1.22-9.98) mg/kg (dry weight basis), respectively. An extreme level of heavy metal contamination in vegetable samples was notified regarding the estimated metal pollution index (MPI) and Nemerow pollution index (P) value, which underpinned the health risk values. The estimated hazard index (HI) value stipulated high risk in all varieties of vegetables regardless of age group and cadmium (Cd) was found as the major contributor. Concerning the carcinogenic risk index (CR) for single elements, the value of Co, Ni, and Cr was approximated far above the USEPA threshold risk limit (CR>1E-04). Moreover, total carcinogenic risk (TCR) for all varieties of vegetables exceeded the safety threshold value for both the age group and children, in particular, were found most vulnerable. The outshot of the present study divulged associated health risks for the population group by the heavy metals via dietary intake of vegetables.

NtGCN2 confers cadmium tolerance in Nicotiana tabacum L. by regulating cadmium uptake, efflux, and subcellular distribution

General control non-derepressible-2 (GCN2) is widely expressed in eukaryotes and responds to biotic and abiotic stressors. However, the precise function and mechanism of action of GCN2 in response to cadmium (Cd) stress in Nicotiana tabacum L. (tobacco) remains unclear. We investigated the role of NtGCN2 in Cd tolerance and explored the mechanism by which NtGCN2 responds to Cd stress in tobacco by exposing NtGCN2 transgenic tobacco lines to different concentrations of CdCl2. NtGCN2 was activated under 50 μmol·L-1 CdCl2 stress and enhanced the Cd tolerance and photosynthetic capacities of tobacco by increasing chlorophyll content and antioxidant capacity by upregulating NtSOD, NtPOD, and NtCAT expression and corresponding enzyme activities and decreasing malondialdehyde and O2·- contents. NtGCN2 enhanced the osmoregulatory capacity of tobacco by elevating proline (Pro) and soluble sugar contents and maintaining low levels of relative conductivity. Finally, NtGCN2 enhanced Cd tolerance in tobacco by reducing Cd uptake and translocation, promoting Cd efflux, and regulating Cd subcellular distribution. In conclusion, NtGCN2 improves the tolerance of tobacco to Cd through a series of mechanisms, namely, increasing antioxidant, photosynthetic, and osmoregulation capacities and regulating Cd uptake, translocation, efflux, and subcellular distribution. This study provides a scientific basis for further exploration of the role of NtGCN2 in plant responses to Cd stress and enhancement of the Cd stress signaling network in tobacco.

Chromiomics: Chromium detoxification and approaches for engineering tolerance in plants

Chromium (Cr) is a heavy metal that poses a grave threat to the ecosystem including plants. Chromium is very harmful to plants due to its effects on many physiological and metabolic pathways culminating in a negative impact on plant's growth, development, and ability to take up nutrients. Plants have developed physiological, biochemical, and molecular ways of defense against Cr, such as by augmenting antioxidant potential to reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS). A number of genes have been discovered to play a significant role in the defense mechanisms of plants against Cr, for example, genes associated with the activation of phytochelatins, metallothioneins, and those of enzymes like glutathione-S-transferases. Along with this, a few miRNAs have been found to be associated in alleviating Cr stress and, to augment plant tolerance by controlling transcription factors, HSPs, and the expression of a few proteins and hormones. Defense pathway genes and miRNAs have been used for the generation of transgenic phytoremediator plants. Not only do the transgenic plants have a higher tolerance to Cr, but they also act as hyperaccumulators for Cr and have the potential to remediate other heavy metals. This article describes about environmental Cr contamination, Cr effects on plants, different genes and miRNAs involved in Cr stress mitigation and use of candidate genes, microRNAs for creating transgenic plant systems for phytoremediation, and the applications of CRISPR technology. It is expected that the integration of omics approach and advanced genomics will offer scope for more effective phytoremediation of Chromium in the coming years.

Health risk assessment for consuming rice, bread, and vegetables in Hoveyzeh city

Introduction

People are continuously exposed to contamination, which mainly consists of heavy metals (HMs) and organic compounds. Several metals can get into grains, veggies, and bread through various methods. We estimated the health risk of HM exposure from the consumption of bread, veggies, and rice, considering the per capita amounts of these foods in the Iranian food basket, especially in Hoveyzeh and Azadegan Plain.

Material and method

The food products analyzed for the assessment of HMs include different veggies, rice, and bread. The health risk assessment was done with the Hazard Quotient and cancer risk formulae. The buying of vegetables, rice, and bread was done in random order during the fall and wintertime seasons.

Result

Tarom rice has the maximum reported levels of Cd (0.55 mg/kg), but Pakistani rice has the lowest level (0.18 mg/kg). Radish shows the highest concentrations of As, Pb, Cr, and Ni among vegetation, while Cress shows the lowest level. The study findings showed that Lavash bread had the highest levels of As (1.31 mg/kg), Cd (0.2 mg/kg), and Ni (1.2 mg/kg), whereas it indicated the lowest level of Cr (0.056 mg/kg). While the non-carcinogenic risk of HMs was evaluated between two groups of adults and children, both groups' HI and HQ levels were less than 1. The maximum HQ and HI scores for children were associated with Arsenic (As), specifically 0.0127 and 0.0137 for Tarom rice, respectively. Nevertheless, the highest HQ and HI scores for adults were associated with As, namely 0.0059 and 0.0064 for Tarom rice, respectively.

Conclusion

The evaluation of the carcinogenic risk caused by HM exposure in kids and adults showed that both groups' accumulated lifetime CRs and ILCRs were lower than 1*10-6. Hence, the consumption of veggies, rice, and bread within the study's area does not show an association with the occurrence of chronic diseases resulting from hazardous HMs.

Emerging activated tungsten dust: Source, environmental behaviors, and health effects

Fusion energy investigation has stepped to a new stage adopting deuterium and tritium as fuels from the previous stage concentrating hydrogen plasma physics. Special radiation safety issues would be introduced during this stage. In addition to industrial and military uses, tungsten is also regarded as the most promising plasma facing material for fusion reactors. During the operation of fusion reactors, tungsten-based plasma facing materials can be activated via neutron nuclear reaction. Meanwhile, activated tungsten dust can be produced when high-energy plasma interacts with the tungsten-based plasma facing materials, namely plasma wall interaction. Activated tungsten dust would be an emerging environmental pollutant with radiation toxicity containing various radionuclides in addition to the chemical toxicity of tungsten itself. Nonetheless, the historical underestimation of its environmental availability has led to limited research on tungsten compared to other environmental contaminants. This paper presents the first systematic review on the safety issue of emerging activated tungsten dust, encompassing source terms, environmental behaviors, and health effects. The key contents are as follows: 1) to detail the source terms of activated tungsten dust from aspects of tungsten basic properties, generation mechanism, physical morphology and chemical component, radioactivity, as well as potential release pathways, 2) to illustrate the environmental behaviors from aspects of atmospheric dispersion and deposition, transformation and migration in soil, as well as plant absorption and distribution, 3) to identify the toxicity and health effects from aspects of toxicity to plants, distribution in human body, as well as health effects by radiation and chemical toxicity, 4) based on the research progress, research and development issues needed are also pointed out to better knowledge of safety issue of activated tungsten dust, which would be beneficial to the area of fusion energy and ecological impact caused by the routine tungsten related industrial and military applications.

Genome-wide identification of heavy-metal ATPases genes in Areca catechu: investigating their functionality under heavy metal exposure

Heavy-metal ATPases (HMAs) play a vital role in plants, helping to transport heavy metal ions across cell membranes.However, insufficient data exists concerning HMAs genes within the Arecaceae family.In this study, 12 AcHMA genes were identified within the genome of Areca catechu, grouped into two main clusters based on their phylogenetic relationships.Genomic distribution analysis reveals that the AcHMA genes were unevenly distributed across six chromosomes. We further analyzed their physicochemical properties, collinearity, and gene structure.Furthermore, RNA-seq data analysis exhibited varied expressions in different tissues of A. catechu and found that AcHMA1, AcHMA2, and AcHMA7 were highly expressed in roots, leaves, pericarp, and male/female flowers. A total of six AcHMA candidate genes were selected based on gene expression patterns, and their expression in the roots and leaves was determined using RT-qPCR under heavy metal stress. Results showed that the expression levels of AcHMA1 and AcHMA3 genes were significantly up-regulated under Cd2 + and Zn2 + stress. Similarly, in response to Cu2+, the AcHMA5 and AcHMA8 revealed the highest expression in roots and leaves, respectively. In conclusion, this study will offer a foundation for exploring the role of the HMAs gene family in dealing with heavy metal stress conditions in A. catechu.

Effects of environmental metal and metalloid pollutants on plants and human health: exploring nano-remediation approach

Metal and metalloid pollutants severely threatens environmental ecosystems and human health, necessitating effective remediation strategies. Nanoparticle (NPs)-based approaches have gained significant attention as promising solutions for efficient removing heavy metals from various environmental matrices. The present review is focused on green synthesized NPs-mediated remediation such as the implementation of iron, carbon-based nanomaterials, metal oxides, and bio-based NPs. The review also explores the mechanisms of NPs interactions with heavy metals, including adsorption, precipitation, and redox reactions. Critical factors influencing the remediation efficiency, such as NPs size, surface charge, and composition, are systematically examined. Furthermore, the environmental fate, transport, and potential risks associated with the application of NPs are critically evaluated. The review also highlights various sources of metal and metalloid pollutants and their impact on human health and translocation in plant tissues. Prospects and challenges in translating NPs-based remediation from laboratory research to real-world applications are proposed. The current work will be helpful to direct future research endeavors and promote the sustainable implementation of metal and metalloid elimination.

Concentration of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) in Rapid Coffee Products in Bandar Abbas, Iran: Probabilistic Non-Carcinogenic and Carcinogenic Risk Assessment

Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages in the world. However, coffee plants are often exposed to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) pollution. The main aims of current study were to detect the PTEs in instant coffee and health risk assessment of consumers in Bandar Abbas city. To achieve this, 40 samples of instant coffee were randomly collected from various points in the city in 2023 and PTEs concentrations were measured using flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were calculated using Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) method. The concentrations of Fe and Cu were higher than other PTEs, equaling 404.41 mg/kg and 0.0046 mg/kg, respectively. The non-carcinogenic risk assessment revealed that THQ (Fe > Pb > As > Cd > Ni > Cu) and TTHQ levels were less than 1 based on the 95% percentile in adults and children, indicating there is no possibility of a non-carcinogenic risk associated with instant coffee. The carcinogenic risk due to inorganic As in instant coffee was acceptable (2.63E-5 and 1.27E-5 based on the 95% percentile for adults and children, respectively), therefore PTEs in instant coffee do not endanger the health of consumers.

Mechanisms of Spirodela polyrhiza tolerance to FGD wastewater-induced heavy-metal stress: Lipidomics, transcriptomics, and functional validation

Unlike terrestrial angiosperm plants, the freshwater aquatic angiosperm duckweed (Spirodela polyrhiza) grows directly in water and has distinct responses to heavy-metal stress. Plantlets accumulate metabolites, including lipids and carbohydrates, under heavy-metal stress, but how they balance metabolite levels is unclear, and the gene networks that mediate heavy-metal stress responses remain unknown. Here, we show that heavy-metal stress induced by flue gas desulfurization (FGD) wastewater reduces chlorophyll contents, inhibits growth, reduces membrane lipid biosynthesis, and stimulates membrane lipid degradation in S. polyrhiza, leading to triacylglycerol and carbohydrate accumulation. In FGD wastewater-treated plantlets, the degraded products of monogalactosyldiacylglycerol, primarily polyunsaturated fatty acids (18:3), were incorporated into triacylglycerols. Genes involved in early fatty acid biosynthesis, β-oxidation, and lipid degradation were upregulated while genes involved in cuticular wax biosynthesis were downregulated by treatment. The transcription factor gene WRINKLED3 (SpWRI3) was upregulated in FGD wastewater-treated plantlets, and its ectopic expression increased tolerance to FGD wastewater in transgenic Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Transgenic Arabidopsis plants showed enhanced glutathione and lower malondialdehyde contents under stress, suggesting that SpWRI3 functions in S. polyrhiza tolerance of FGD wastewater-induced heavy-metal stress. These results provide a basis for improving heavy metal-stress tolerance in plants for industrial applications.

Risk assessment of trace elements in vegetables grown in river Yamuna floodplain in Delhi

Urban agriculture is common in fertile river floodplains of many developing countries. However, there is a risk of contamination in highly polluted regions. This study quantifies health risks associated with the consumption of vegetables grown in the floodplain of the urban river 'Yamuna' in the highly polluted yet data-scarce megacity Delhi, India. Six trace elements are analyzed in five kinds of vegetable samples. Soil samples from the cultivation area are also analyzed for elemental contamination. Ni, Mn, and Co are observed to be higher in leafy vegetables than others. Fruit and inflorescence vegetables are found to have higher concentrations of Cr, Pb, and Zn as compared to root vegetables. Transfer Factor indicates that Cr and Co have the highest and least mobility, respectively. Vegetable Pollution Index indicates that contamination levels follow as Cr > Ni > Pb > Zn. Higher Metal Pollution Index of leafy and inflorescence vegetables than root and fruit vegetables indicate that atmospheric deposition is the predominant source. Principal Component Analysis indicates that Pb and Cr have similar sources and patterns in accumulation. Among the analyzed vegetables, radish may pose a non-carcinogenic risk to the age group of 1-5 year. Carcinogenic risk is found to be potentially high due to Ni and Cr accumulation. Consumption of leafy vegetables was found to have relatively less risk than other vegetables due to lower Cr accumulation. Remediation of Cr and Ni in floodplain soil and regular monitoring of elemental contamination is a priority.

Modified phosphogypsum whiskers for decontamination of mercury tailings

Mercury (Hg) tailings are hazardous solid wastes because of their high Hg concentrations. Modified phosphogypsum (PG) can decrease the bioactivity and mobility of heavy metals through chemisorption or electrostatic interactions. In this study, PG whiskers were modified by ZnCl2 and S, chitosan-hydrochloric acid, and thioglycolic materials; the resulting modified whiskers were used to decontaminate Hg tailings. Leaching tests and orthogonal experiments were conducted to optimize the modification parameters, including modifier quantity, pH, reaction temperature, and reaction time. The structure and physicochemical properties of the whiskers before and after modification were characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The stabilization efficiency of the modified PG whiskers ranged from 93.05 to 97.50%, demonstrating excellent stabilization effects. The stabilization was achieved through chemisorption or complexation. The decontamination process using modified whiskers reduced the pH and total nitrogen of the tailings; increased the cation exchange, total phosphorus, organic carbon, and total carbon; and made the tailings suitable for planting. In addition, the modified PG promoted the morphological transformation of Hg in the tailings, thereby significantly decreasing the Hg content in the effective states and mitigating the risk of Hg contamination.

Applicability of Brassica juncea as a bioindicator for As contamination in soil near the abandoned mine area

Soil monitoring in abandoned mine areas is important from the perspective of ecological and human health risk. Arsenic (As) is a predominant metalloid contaminant in abandoned mine area and its behavior has been influenced by various soil characteristics. Bioindicator can be a useful tool in terms of testing the extent to which they are uptaken by plants bioavailability. Eighteen soils near the mine tailings dam were collected to investigate the effect of As contamination on As absorption by Brassica juncea. The pH range of the experimental soils was between 4.90 and 8.55, and the total As concentrations were between 34 mg kg-1 and 3017 mg kg-1. The bioavailability of As was evaluated by Olsen method, and B. juncea was cultivated in eighteen soils for 3 weeks. Principal component analysis, correlation, and multiple regression analysis were performed to estimate a significant factor affecting As uptake by B. juncea. All statistical results indicated that As bioavailability in soil is the main factor affecting As uptake in root and shoot of B. juncea. Although translocation process, the amount of As in shoot was exponentially explained by As bioavailability in soil. This result suggests that the contamination and bioavailability of As can be confirmed only by analyzing the shoot of B. juncea, which is be easily found in environmental ecosystem, and implies the applicability of B. juncea as a bioindicator for the monitoring of As contamination and its behavior in soil ecosystem.

Recent Advancements in Fluorometric and Colorimetric Detection of Cd2+ Using Organic Chemosensors: A Review (2019-2024)

In recent decades, heavy metal ions have emerged as a significant global environmental concern, posing threats to the delicate balance of ecosystems worldwide. Their introduction into ecosystems occurs through various activities and poses a serious risk to human health. Among heavy metal ions, Cd2+ is recognized as a highly toxic pollutant. Its widespread use contributes to its accumulation in the environment. Chronic exposure to Cd2+ ions present serious risks to both the environment and human health. Therefore, the detection of these metal ions are very important. Organic fluorometric and colorimetric detection have emerged as promising tools for this purpose, offering advantages such as high sensitivity, selectivity, and sometimes reversibility. This review offers a comprehensive overview of the recent advancements in the fluorometric and colorimetric detection of Cd2+ using organic chemosensors from 2019 to 2024. We delve into key aspects of these studies, including the design strategies employed to design novel chemosensors and the underlying sensing mechanisms. Furthermore, we explore the diverse applications of these organic chemosensors, ranging from environmental monitoring to biomedical diagnostics. By analyzing the latest research findings, this review aims to offer insights into the current state-of-the-art in the field of Cd2+ detection using organic chemosensors. Additionally, it highlights the potential opportunities and challenges that lie ahead, paving the way for future advancements in this important area of research.

Sources, effects and present perspectives of heavy metals contamination: Soil, plants and human food chain

Heavy metal (HM) poisoning of agricultural soils poses a serious risk to plant life, human health, and global food supply. When HM levels in agricultural soils get to dangerous levels, it harms crop health and yield. Chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) are the main heavy metals. The environment contains these metals in varying degrees, such as in soil, food, water, and even the air. These substances damage plants and alter soil characteristics, which lowers crop yield. Crop types, growing circumstances, elemental toxicity, developmental stage, soil physical and chemical properties, and the presence and bioavailability of heavy metals (HMs) in the soil solution are some of the factors affecting the amount of HM toxicity in crops. By interfering with the normal structure and function of cellular components, HMs can impede various metabolic and developmental processes. Humans are exposed to numerous serious diseases by consuming these affected plant products. Exposure to certain metals can harm the kidneys, brain, intestines, lungs, liver, and other organs of the human body. This review assesses (1) contamination of heavy metals in soils through different sources, like anthropogenic and natural; (2) the effect on microorganisms and the chemical and physical properties of soil; (3) the effect on plants as well as crop production; and (4) entering the food chain and associated hazards to human health. Lastly, we identified certain research gaps and suggested further study. If people want to feel safe in their surroundings, there needs to be stringent regulation of the release of heavy metals into the environment.

Engaging One Health in Heavy Metal Pollution in Some Selected Nigerian Niger Delta Cities. A Systematic Review of Pervasiveness, Bioaccumulation and Subduing Environmental Health Challenges

The Niger Delta environment is under serious threat due to heavy metal pollution. Many studies have been conducted on the heavy metal contamination in soils, water, seafood and plants in the Niger Delta ecosystem. However, there is a lack of clear understanding of the health consequences for people and strategies for attaining One Health, and a dispersion of information that is accessible. The study focused on investigating the contamination levels, distributions, risks, sources and impacts of heavy metals in selected regions of the Niger Delta. Prior studies revealed that the levels of certain heavy metals, including Cd, Pb, Cu, Cr, Mn, Fe and Ni, in water, sediment, fish and plants in most Niger Delta ecosystems were higher than the acceptable threshold attributed to various anthropogenic stressors. In the reviewed Niger Delta states, ecosystems in Rivers state showed the highest concentrations of heavy metals in most sampled sites. Groundwater quality was recorded at concentrations higher than 0.3 mg/L World Health Organization drinking water guideline. High concentrations of copper (147.915 mg/L) and zinc (10.878 mg/L) were found in Rivers State. The heavy metals concentrations were greater in bottom-dwelling organisms such as bivalves, gastropods and shrimp than in other fishery species. Heavy metal exposure in the region poses risks of communicable and non-communicable diseases. Diverse remediation methods are crucial to reduce contamination levels, but comprehensive strategies and international cooperation are essential to address the health hazards. Actively reducing heavy metals in the environment can achieve One Health objectives and mitigate disease and economic burdens.

Lead exposure aggravates glucose metabolism disorders through gut microbiota dysbiosis and intestinal barrier damage in high-fat diet-fed mice

BACKGROUND

Lead (Pb) is an ancient toxic metal and is still a major public health issue. Our previous study found that Pb exposure promotes metabolic disorders in obese mice, but the molecular mechanisms remain unclear. The present study explored the effects of Pb exposure on glucose homeostasis in mice fed a normal diet (ND) and high-fat diet (HFD) from the perspective of gut microbiota.

RESULTS

Pb exposure had little effect on glucose metabolism in ND mice, but exacerbated hyperglycemia and insulin resistance, and impaired glucose tolerance in HFD mice. Pb exposure impaired intestinal tight junctions and mucin expression in HFD mice, increasing intestinal permeability and inflammation. Moreover, Pb exposure altered the composition and structure of the gut microbiota and decreased short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) levels in HFD mice. Correlation analysis revealed that the gut microbiota and SCFAs were significantly correlated with the gut barrier and glucose homeostasis. Furthermore, the fecal microbiota transplantation from Pb-exposed HFD mice resulted in glucose homeostasis imbalance, intestinal mucosal structural damage and inflammation in recipient mice. However, Pb did not exacerbate the metabolic toxicity in HFD mice under depleted gut microbiota.

CONCLUSION

The findings of the present study suggest that Pb induces impairment of glucose metabolism in HFD mice by perturbing the gut microbiota. Our study offers new perspectives on the mechanisms of metabolic toxicity of heavy metals and demonstrates that the gut microbiota may be a target of action for heavy metal exposure. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Synergistic effect of pyrene and heavy metals (Zn, Pb, and Cd) on phytoremediation potential of Medicago sativa L. (alfalfa) in multi-contaminated soil

The environment in India is contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) due to the occurrence of large anthropogenic activities, i.e., fuel combustion, mineral roasting, and biomass burning. Hence, 13 toxic PAHs were detected: phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, and benz(a) anthracene, ben-zo; (b) fluoranthene, benzo(k) fluoranthene, benzo(a) pyrene, benzo(ghi)perylene, dibenz (ah) anthracene, indeno1,2,3-(cd) pyrene, coronene and coronene in the environment (i.e., ambient particulate matter, road dust, sludge, and sewage) of the most industrialized area. Pollutants such as heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons co-contaminate the soil and pose a significant hazard to the ecosystem because these pollutants are harmful to both humans and the environment. Phytoremediation is an economical plant-based natural approach for soil clean-up that has no negative impact on ecosystems. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of pyrene (500 mg kg-1), Zn (150 mg kg-1), Pb (150 mg kg-1), and Cd (150 mg kg-1) alone and in combination on the phytoextraction efficiency of Medicago sativa growing in contaminated soil. Plant biomass, biochemical activities, translocation factors, accumulation of heavy metals, and pyrene removal were determined. After 60 days of planting, compared with those of the control plants, the growth parameters, biomass, and chlorophyll content of the M. sativa plants were significantly lower, and the reactive oxygen species activity, such as proline and polyphenol content and metallothionein protein content, was markedly greater in the pyrene and heavy metal-polluted soils. Furthermore, the combined toxicity of pyrene and all three metals on M. sativa growth and biochemical parameters was significantly greater than that of pyrene, Zn, Pb, or Cd alone, indicating the synergistic effect of pyrene and heavy metals on cytotoxicity. Pyrene stress increased Cd accumulation in M. sativa. After pyrene exposure alone or in combination with Zn-pyrene, a greater pyrene removal rate (85.5-81.44%) was observed than that in Pb-pyrene, Cd-pyrene, and Zn-Pb-Cd-pyrene polluted soils (62.78-71.27%), indicating that zinc can enhance the removal of pyrene from contaminated soil. The resulting hypotheses demonstrated that Medicago sativa can be used as a promising phytoremediation agent for co-contaminated soil.

Metal distribution and human health risk assessment in legumes crops (chickpea, lentils and peas) from Belesa districts, Ethiopia

Accumulation of heavy metals in food is a major concern for humans' health. This study was aimed at determining the levels of Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn in chickpea, lentil and pea samples and evaluating the health risk for consumers. The concentrations (in mg/kg) of Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, and Ni were varied from 23.6-48, 67.7-132.3, 15-26.5, 37.6-68.2, and 25.5-33.3 in chickpea, 39.8-80.5, 116.1-180.5, 12.1-21.6, 36.4-57.2, and 25.4-34.1 for lentil and 32-64.2, 51.6-100.0, 6.3-15, 25.3-42.5, and 25.5-48.5 for peas, respectively. Pearson correlation verified that strong positive correlations were observed between Cu and Zn in lentils, Ni and Mn, Fe with Cu and Mn in peas. Target hazard quotients (THQ) except Ni in all samples, Cu in lentil and pea were < 1 and the hazard index (HI) values of all heavy metals were greater than 1, thus an appropriate strategy is required to reduce exposure to heavy metals.

Unraveling the impact of digital transformation on green innovation through microdata and machine learning

How to use digitalization to support the green transformation of organizations has drawn much attention based on the rapid development of digitalization. However, digital transformation (DT) may be hindered by the "IT productivity paradox." Exploring the influence of DT on green innovation, we analyze panel data encompassing A-share listed companies in Shanghai and Shenzhen spanning the period from 2010 to 2018. It tests the DT's non-linear impact, employing a random-forest and mediation effect models. The results reveal that (i) DT can promote green innovation; (ii) regarding heterogeneity, the promotion effect is mainly manifested in enterprises in non-state-owned and highly competitive industries; (iii) based on mechanism testing, DT relies on two routes to encourage green innovation: improving environmental information disclosure and reducing environmental uncertainty; and (iv) random-forest analysis shows that DT exhibits an inverted U-shaped non-linear effect on green innovation, including the "IT productivity paradox." This study enhances the existing discourse on DT and green innovation by furnishing empirical substantiation for the non-linear influence exerted by DT on green innovation. Furthermore, it imparts insights into the mechanisms and contextual limitations governing this association.

Competitive adsorption mechanisms of Cd(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) on bioinspired mesoporous silica revealed by complementary adsorption/isothermal titration calorimetry studies

This study presents the adsorption properties of a bioinspired grafted mesoporous silica material and the competitive effects between Cd(II) or Cu(II) and Pb(II) during the adsorption process. Glutathione, a natural antioxidant known for its metal binding properties, has been successfully grafted to SBA-15 mesoporous silica and the optimum adsorption parameters were determined. This original and multidisciplinary approach combines classical adsorption studies with thermodynamic investigations to understand the adsorption behavior of Cd(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) on this material. To this end, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) has been used to elucidate the mechanisms of single-metal and two-metal adsorption. The results showed affinity in the order Pb(II) > Cu(II) > Cd(II) in single metal systems. Cd(II) adsorption relied mainly on physical contributions while Cu(II) and Pb(II) adsorption was shown to be chemically driven. Two-metal systems highlighted that Cd(II) and Pb(II) are adsorbed on the same coordination sites, whereas Cu(II) and Pb(II) are adsorbed on different sites. The material showed good selectivity and encouraging results were obtained on real effluents.

Assessment and Bioaccumulation of Heavy Metals in Water, Fish (wild and Farmed) and Associated Human Health Risk

Worldwide, anthropogenic activities are causing the natural environment and aquaculture systems to become heavily contaminated with heavy metals, which can lead to consumer's health problems. In the current study, wild and farmed fish (n = 30) and water samples (n = 6) have been collected from the Chashma barrage and fish farm to assess the heavy metals concentration, i.e., Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn and Cr, in the water and some important organs (gills, liver, muscle, brain and bones) of wild and farmed fish (Labeo rohita) using Graphite furnace Atomic absorption spectrometry. Bioaccumulation factor and human health risk assessment were calculated to measure the health status of both fish and humans. Results show that in wild and farm fish's gills, muscles and bones, the trend of the heavy metals was Zn > Pb > Cu > Cd > Cr. On the other hand, the brain and liver show Zn > Cu > Pb > Cd > Cr trend. Comparatively, the heavy metals concentration was mostly higher (P < 0.05) in wild fish. Further; in both fish habitats (water) the heavy metals (Cd and Pb) concentration was higher than the WHO standard level, while in the body, Cd was higher (P < 0.05) in all studied organs except the muscle, Cr was only lower (P > 0.05) in muscle and brain. Pb was higher (P < 0.05) in all studied organs of both fish. Bioaccumulation of heavy metals was mostly higher (P < 0.05) in wild fish than in farmed. EDI and THQ were higher in wild fish, but the HI value was lower than 1 for both fish. Moreover, the PCA analysis suggests a positive correlation between heavy metals concentration in fish organs and the water of both fish (wild and farmed). Results indicated that farmed fish showed less potential risk to humans than wild fish.

Unboxing the dilemma associated with online shopping and purchase behavior for remanufactured products: A smart strategy for waste management

Despite an unprecedented shift in favor of sustainable consumer purchase patterns globally, the overall adoption of refurbished products is still scarce. Earlier empirical investigations have tested aspects affecting consumer purchase intentions concerning remanufactured products, yet they largely ignored risks hindering consumers from opting for them. In order to fill the given theoretical gap, the study tests both inhibiting and igniting factors affecting consumer's remanufacturing products purchase behavior through the use of Stimulus Organism Response (SOR) theory. SOR assists in better understanding consumers' digital purchase behavior toward remanufactured products. Moreover, the study extends the knowledge by examining the impact of Perceived Environmental Benefits, Seller's Reputation, Price Sensitivity, and Social Influence on Consumer's Purchase behavior for remanufactured products. It also investigates the mediating role of the Perceived Risk of Remanufactured Products, followed by the moderating role of Consumers Trust. A useable sample data of 361 was collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). Results indicated the inverse relationship between increased price sensitivity and purchase behavior concerning remanufactured products, and all other stated variables reflected a significant association with consumer purchase behavior. Likewise, both mediating and moderating roles were found to be significant. Along with theoretical contributions, the study contains numerous practical directions for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and researchers to increase consumers' purchase behavior toward remanufactured products.

Toxicity of Metal Oxides, Dyes, and Dissolved Organic Matter in Water: Implications for the Environment and Human Health

PVA/PAA/DMTD electrospun nanofibrous membrane for the selective adsorption of Pb(II) ions in liquid foods

Lead (Pb(II)) contamination is common in liquid foods and can result from Pb(II) being present in the raw materials or during handling processes. However, due to the complexity of food matrices, there is limited data available concerning Pb(II) ion removal from food sources. This study focused on fabricating a PVA/PAA/DMTD electrospun nanofibrous membrane (ENFM) to efficiently and selectively remove Pb(II) ions from liquid foods. The PVA/PAA/DMTD ENFM had a maximum adsorption capacity of 138.3 mg/g for Pb(II) ions and demonstrated high selectivity toward the removal of Pb(II) ions. Negative values of the Gibbs free energy (ΔG°) showed that the spontaneous nature of the adsorption process was feasible at different temperatures. Moreover, it successfully removed Pb(II) ions from selected samples of commercially available drinks. Therefore, this adsorbent exhibits significant potential for removing Pb(II) ions from liquid food products, thereby reducing daily dietary exposure to Pb(II).

Membrane-based technology in water and resources recovery from the perspective of water social circulation: A review

In this review, the application of membrane-based technology in water social circulation was summarized. Water social circulation encompassed the entire process from the acquirement to discharge of water from natural environment for human living and development. The focus of this review was primarily on the membrane-based technology in recovery of water and other valuable resources such as mineral ions, nitrogen and phosphorus. The main text was divided into four main sections according to water flow in the social circulation: drinking water treatment, agricultural utilization, industrial waste recycling, and urban wastewater reuse. In drinking water treatment, the acquirement of water resources was of the most importance. Pressure-driven membranes, such as ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) were considered suitable in natural surface water treatment. Additionally, electrodialysis (ED) and membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI) were also effective in brackish water desalination. Agriculture required abundant water with relative low quality for irrigation. Therefore, the recovery of water from other stages of the social circulation has become a reasonable solution. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) was a typical technique attributed to low-toxicity effluent. In industrial waste reuse, the osmosis membranes (FO and PRO) were utilized due to the complex physical and chemical properties of industrial wastewater. Especially, membrane distillation (MD) might be promising when the wastewater was preheated. Resources recovery in urban wastewater was mainly divided into recovery of bioenergy (via anaerobic membrane bioreactors, AnMBR), nitrogen (utilizing MD and gas-permeable membrane), and phosphorus (through MBR with chemical precipitation). Furthermore, hybrid/integrated systems with membranes as the core component enhanced their performance and long-term working ability in utilization. Generally, concentrate management and energy consumption control might be the key areas for future advancements of membrane-based technology.

Assessing Heavy Metals in the Sele River Estuary: An Overview of Pollution Indices in Southern Italy

Rapid industrialization, coupled with a historical lack of understanding in toxicology, has led in an increase in estuary pollution, frequently resulting in unexpected environmental situations. Therefore, the occurrence of heavy metals (HMs) constitutes a major environmental issue, posing a serious risk both to aquatic ecosystems and public health. This study aimed to evaluate the levels of eight HMs (As, Hg, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) in water, suspended particles, and sediment near the Sele River estuary (Italy) in order to assess their environmental impacts on the sea and health risks for humans. The results revealed an increasing order of HM concentration according to the scheme suspended particulate matter (SPM) > sediment (SED) > dissolved phase (DP) and a moderate contamination status in sediment. The health risk assessment indicated that the non-carcinogenic risk was negligible. Carcinogenic risk, expressed as the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR), was negligible for Cd and Ni and within tolerable limits for As, Pb, and Cr. The findings suggested that, even if there are currently no specific limits for chemical parameters in the transitional waters of Italy, monitoring systems should be implemented to determine pollution levels and implement effective steps to improve river water quality and reduce human health risks.

Optical nanosensors based on noble metal nanoclusters for detecting food contaminants: A review

Food contaminants present a significant threat to public health. In response to escalating global concerns regarding food safety, there is a growing demand for straightforward, rapid, and sensitive detection technologies. Noble metal nanoclusters (NMNCs) have garnered considerable attention due to their superior attributes compared to other optical materials. These attributes include high catalytic activity, excellent biocompatibility, and outstanding photoluminescence properties. These features render NMNCs promising candidates for crafting nanosensors for food contaminant detection, offering the potential for the development of uncomplicated, swift, sensitive, user-friendly, and cost-effective detection approaches. This review investigates optical nanosensors based on NMNCs, including the synthesis methodologies of NMNCs, sensing strategies, and their applications in detecting food contaminants. Furthermore, it involves a comparative assessment of the applications of NMNCs in optical sensing and their performance. Ultimately, this paper imparts fresh perspectives on the forthcoming challenges. Hitherto, optical (particularly fluorescent) nanosensors founded on NMNCs have demonstrated exceptional sensing capabilities in the realm of food contaminant detection. To enhance sensing performance, future research should prioritize atomically precise NMNCs synthesis, augmentation of catalytic activity and optical properties, development of high-throughput and multimode sensing, integration of NMNCs with microfluidic devices, and the optimization of NMNCs storage, shelf life, and transportation conditions.

Protective potential of thymoquinone against cadmium, arsenic, and lead toxicity: A short review with emphasis on oxidative pathways

Heavy metals are among the most important environmental pollutions used in various industries. Their extensive use has increased human susceptibility to different chronic diseases. Toxic metal exposure, especially cadmium, arsenic, and lead, causes oxidative damages, mitochondrial dysfunction, and genetic and epigenetic modifications. Meanwhile, thymoquinone (TQ) is an effective component of Nigella sativa oil that plays an important role in preventing the destructive effects of heavy metals. The present review discusses how TQ can protect various tissues against oxidative damage of heavy metals. This review is based on the research reported about the protective effects of TQ in the toxicity of heavy metals, approximately the last 10 years (2010-2021). Scientific databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed, were searched using the following keywords either alone or in combination: cadmium, arsenic, lead, TQ, and oxidative stress. TQ, as a potent antioxidant, can distribute to cellular compartments and prevent oxidative damage of toxic metals. However, depending on the type of toxic metal and the carrier system used to release TQ in biological systems, its therapeutic dosage range may be varied.

Microbial Biosurfactant: Candida bombicola as a Potential Remediator of Environments Contaminated by Heavy Metals

Industrial interest in surfactants of microbial origin has intensified recently due to the characteristics of these compounds, such as biodegradability and reduced toxicity, and their efficiency in removing heavy metals and hydrophobic organic compounds from soils and waters. The aim of this study was to produce a biosurfactant using Candida bombicola URM 3712 in a low-cost medium containing 5.0% molasses, 3.0% corn steep liquor and 2.5% residual frying oil for 144 h at 200 rmp. Measurements of engine oil tension and emulsification were made under extreme conditions of temperature (0 °C, 5 °C, 70 °C, 100 °C and 120 °C), pH (2-12) and NaCl concentrations (2-12), demonstrating the stability of the biosurfactant. The isolated biosurfactant was characterized as an anionic molecule with the ability to reduce the surface tension of water from 72 to 29 mN/m, with a critical micellar concentration of 0.5%. The biosurfactant had no toxic effect on vegetable seeds or on Eisenia fetida as a bioindicator. Applications in the removal of heavy metals from contaminated soils under dynamic conditions demonstrated the potential of the crude and isolated biosurfactant in the removal of Fe, Zn and Pb with percentages between 70 and 88%, with the highest removal of Pb being 48%. The highest percentage of removal was obtained using the cell-free metabolic liquid, which was able to remove 48, 71 and 88% of lead, zinc and iron from the soil, respectively. Tests in packed columns also confirmed the biosurfactant's ability to remove Fe, Zn and Pb between 40 and 65%. The removal kinetics demonstrated an increasing percentage, reaching removal of 50, 70 and 85% for Pb, Zn and Fe, respectively, reaching a greater removal efficiency at the end of 24 h. The biosurfactant was also able to significantly reduce the electrical conductivity of solutions containing heavy metals. The biosurfactant produced by Candida bombicola has potential as an adjuvant in industrial processes for remediating soils and effluents polluted by inorganic contaminants.

Bioavailability and health risk assessment of Zn and Cd in edible tissues of two typical shellfish species using in vitro gastrointestinal digestion

Dynamic extraction of edible tissues of Jinjiang oyster (Crassostrea rivularis) and Flower clam (Paphia undulata) was conducted using a fully biomimetic digestion (in vitro) method. The impact of different cooking methods on the bioavailability of Zn and Cd in the edible shellfish tissues was analyzed, and the human health risk of Zn and Cd was evaluated. The results show that the gastric biomimetic extractions of Zn and Cd in unheated samples of C. rivularis and P. undulata were higher than those in the intestinal biomimetic extraction. The extraction patterns of cooked samples were consistent with those of raw samples. The bioavailability of Zn and Cd in cooked samples of C. rivularis was 94.9% and 82.5%, respectively, indicating increased Zn bioavailability but decreased Cd bioavailability compared to the raw samples. The bioavailability of Zn and Cd in cooked samples of P. undulata was 85.1% and 83.0%, respectively, both of which decreased compared to the raw samples. Consumption of C. rivularis can provide 21.0% to 34.2% of the daily required Zn intake, while consumption of P. undulata can provide 3.8% to 6.4%. The intake of Cd from both shellfish species is below the monthly tolerable intake recommended by FAO/WHO. Consuming cooked C. rivularis can increase the intake of Zn and decrease the intake of Cd.

Responses of plant carbon and nitrogen assimilations to nitrogen addition in a subtropical forest: Canopy addition vs. understory addition

The global atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition has intensified in recent years, resulting in a complex impact on forest ecosystems. This study investigated the effects of canopy (CAN) and understory additions of N (UAN) on leaf carbon (C) and N assimilations, as well as growth parameters of representative woody plant species in an evergreen broad-leaved forest, i.e. Castanea henryi, Schefflera heptaphylla, Blastus cochinchinensis, and Lasianthus chinensis. The results showed that leaf N assimilation key enzyme nitrate reductase (NR) activities of B. cochinchinensis and S. heptaphylla were significantly decreased by UAN, and were significantly decreased by CAN for C. henryi. CAN significantly decreased the nitrite reductase activity of C. henryi, while significantly increased that of L. chinensis. However, the Amax values of each woody species were not significantly different among control (CK), CAN, and UAN. Community surveys demonstrated that CAN and UAN inhibited the growth (diameter at breast height, height, or crown width) of the representative large tree, C. henryi, while promoting the growths of understory woody species (B. cochinchinensis and L. chinensis). Overall, N addition was found to change the physiological processes of N and C metabolisms of the dominant woody species in an evergreen broad-leaved forest. The community of subtropical evergreen broad-leaved forests may further decline and its C fixation capacity may be detrimentally changed under N deposition in the future.

Ecotoxicological risks of metals in the subsistence food garden soils of Watut River floodplains, Papua New Guinea

Exorbitant concentrations of toxic metals in the soil from anthropogenic activities are environmental hazards and key health risk concerns to humans. The subsistence food garden soils have minimum anthropogenic interventions. The ecotoxicological risk potentials of the metals in subsistence food garden settings are unexplored. The metals (Cr, Cu, Pb, and Ni) concentration were assessed in the surface soil fractions (2 mm and 0.2 mm) of food gardens (N = 20) on the floodplains of Watut River, Papua New Guinea. The threshold limits, index of geo-accumulation (Igeo), contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), and potential ecological risk index (PERI) served as potential risk indicators of metals. Regardless of soil particle size, the descending order of median metals concentration was Cr > Cu > Ni > Pb. The concentration of Cu and Ni in the soil particles exceeded the WHO threshold limits in 100% and 50% of the food garden soils, respectively. Metal enrichment led to severe pollution in 100% gardens (Igeo > 5). Cr, Cu, and Ni contamination factors were > 1 in 95% of the food gardens. The PERI values indicated a lower ecological risk of the metals (PERI < 100). The median concentration of Cu, Igeo, and CF values for Cu in the 2 mm soil particles were significantly greater than in 0.2 mm. The results suggested exposure of subsistence food gardens soils to geogenic metal contamination and the need to carefully choose appropriate soil particle size for the soil health assessments.

Mitigation of heavy metal stress in the soil through optimized interaction between plants and microbes

Agricultural as well as industrial processes, such as mining and textile activities, are just a few examples of anthropogenic activities that have a long-term negative impact on the environment. Each of the aforementioned factors increases the concentration of heavy metals in soil. Heavy metal contamination in soil causes a wide range of environmental issues and is harmful to microbes, plants, and animals. Because of their non-biodegradability and toxic effects, preventing additional metal contamination and remediating the vast majority of contaminated sites around the world is critical. Hence, this review focuses on the effects of metal contamination on soil microbes, as well as plant-microbe interactions. Plant-associated probiotics reduce metal accumulation; the introduction of beneficial microbes is regarded as one of the most promising approaches to improving metal stress tolerance; thus, the study focuses on plant-microbe interactions as well as their actual implications via phytoremediation. Plant-microbe interaction can play an important role in acclimating vegetation (plants) to metalliferous conditions and should thus be studied to improve microbe-aided metal tolerance in plants. Plant-interacted microbes reduce metal accumulation in plant cells and metal bioaccumulation in the soil through a variety of processes. A novel phytobacterial approach, such as genetically modified microbes, is now being used to improve heavy metal cleanup as well as stress tolerance among plants. This review examines our current understanding of such negative consequences of heavy metal stresses, signaling responses, and the role of plant-associated microbiota in heavy metal stress tolerance and interaction.

Foliar architecture differentially restrains metal sequestration capacity in wheat grains (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in hyper-chloride-contaminated soils

Anthropogenic activities, such as industrial wastewater and use of water softeners, cause hyper-accumulation of Cl- in water sources and soils. Currently, industries have no sustainable method to remove these Cl- ions from wastewater. This study was conducted to evaluate the integrative responses of wheat cultivated in five industrial effluent-affected areas (S2-S6) by investigating soil characters and bioaccumulation of metals in wheat plants and grains. The S4 site (near the second chloride outlet) exhibited a higher concentration of CO2, SO2, NO2, Cl-, Cd, Mn, Ni, Cr, and Zn. Soil from S6 (sewage wastewater downstream getting mixed with chloride-contaminated water) had a minimum level of nutrients (Na, K, and Ca), maximum metals (Cd, Fe, Pb, Mn), and reduction in plant biomass. In site S2 (sewage wastewater upstream of the chloride factory), a higher level of minerals and metals was noted in the roots. Maximum metals in grains occurred in S6 with higher organic osmolytes. The sequestration capacity of metals in leaves was also increased by alterations in anatomical traits. Results indicated that metals and hyper-Cl- concentration employed a negative influence on the plants because of poor soil quality, extremely damaged microstructures leading to reduced yield, poor grain quality, and excessive translocation from roots to wheat grains. These findings revealed that contaminated plants used as either green forage or hay are noxious to animals and if used as grain for feed or humans can lead to serious health hazards.

Lead, Cadmium, and Arsenic in Raw Cow's Milk in a Central Andean Area and Risks for the Peruvian Populations

Milk and its derivatives are basic foods in Peru, especially for children. The Junín region, in the central Andes, is one of the leading dairy basins. However, the safety of milk is affected by mining-metallurgical activities, wastewater dumping, organic residues, and inappropriate use of organophosphate fertilizers in agriculture whose contaminants reach the food chain, putting human health at risk. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bioaccumulation of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As) in milk produced on a representative farm in central Peru, which uses phosphorous agrochemicals and is adjacent to a small mineral concentrator and a municipal solid waste dump, and to evaluate the potential risk for the Peruvian population of 2-85 years considering three levels of daily intake by age, which constitutes the innovative contribution of the study. These three elements were quantified by flame atomic absorption spectrometry following standardized procedures. The mean contents of Pb (0.062 mg/kg), Cd (0.014 mg/kg), and As (0.030 mg/kg) in milk exceeded the maximum limits allowed by international standards. At all ages, the target quotient hazard followed a descending order of As > Pb > Cd, being > 1 in the case of As. The hazard index was >1 for children under 7, 9, and 11 years of age in the scenarios of low, medium, and high milk intake. The information is valid for formulating policies to prevent adverse health effects and develop standards and awareness programs, monitoring, and control of heavy metals in milk in Peru.

Polymeric Inclusion Membranes Based on Ionic Liquids for Selective Separation of Metal Ions

In this work, poly(vinyl chloride)-based polymeric ionic liquid inclusion membranes were used in the selective separation of Fe(III), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II) from hydrochloride aqueous solutions. The ionic liquids under study were 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, [omim+][PF6-] and methyl trioctyl ammonium chloride, [MTOA+][Cl-]. For this purpose, stability studies of different IL/base polymer compositions against aqueous phases were carried out. Among all polymer inclusion membranes studied, [omim+][PF6-]/PVC membranes at a ratio of 30/70 and [MTOA+][Cl-]/PVC membranes at a ratio of 70/30 were able to retain up to 82% and 48% of the weight of the initial ionic liquid, respectively, after being exposed to a solution of metal ions in 1 M HCl for 2048 h (85 days). It was found that polymer inclusion membranes based on the ionic liquid methyl trioctyl ammonium chloride allowed the selective separation of Zn(II)/Cu(II) and Zn(II)/Fe(III) mixtures with separation factors of 1996, 606 and, to a lesser extent but also satisfactorily, Cd(II)/Cu(II) mixtures, with a separation factor of 112. Therefore, selecting the appropriate ionic liquid/base polymer mixture makes it possible to create polymeric inclusion membranes capable of selectively separating target metal ions.

Contents and health risk assessments of selected heavy metals in vegetables produced through irrigation with effluent-impacted river

The widely consumed vegetables, khat, lettuce, and Swiss chard, in Hirna town, West Hararghe, Ethiopia, are extensively cultivated through irrigation with an effluent-impacted river that flows through the town which denotes that monitoring the safety of the vegetables is crucial. Herein, the contents of Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, and Cd in vegetables, water, and soils were determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry after a wet digestion procedure based on a mixture of HNO3 and HClO4 at 200 °C. pH and electrical conductivity of the water and soil, and health risks associated with vegetable consumption were determined. The pH of the water (6.64) and soil (6.67) was slightly acidic, and electrical conductivity values were 0.416 and 0.024 mS/cm, respectively, indicating both are in good condition. The metal concentrations were in the range of ND-3.12, 3.43-9.22, and 0.15-10.6 mg/L in the water, soil, and vegetables, respectively, and the contents followed a trend of Cu > Zn > Cr > Pb > Cd. The irrigation water contained all metals above the guidelines except Cd, and the soil contained safe levels except Cd which is above the guideline. The obtained metal levels in the vegetables were below the safe limits. Estimated daily intakes and the total target cancer risks were below the guidelines, and the target hazard quotient and the hazard index were below 1 indicating that the vegetables are safe for consumption. In general, the obtained results suggest that the vegetables are safe for consumption. However, continuous monitoring and policy development are required to mitigate contamination of the river.
