Abstract
BACKGROUND High-fat diet (HFD) is associated with visceral obesity due to disruption in the lipid metabolism and gut dysbiosis. These symptoms may contribute to hepatic steatosis and the formation of oxidized polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Alpha-aminobutyric acid (ABA) is an amino-acid derived metabolite, and its concentration has been correlated with several metabolic conditions and gut microbiome diversity while its direct effects on visceral obesity, lipid metabolism and the gut microbiota are not well understood. This study was designed to investigate the effect of physiological dose of ABA on diet-induced visceral obesity and lipid metabolism dysregulation by examining the fatty acids and oxidized PUFAs profile in the liver as well as the gut microbiota. RESULTS ABA administration reduced visceral obesity by 28 % and lessened adipocyte hypertrophy. The expression of liver Cd36 was lowered by more than 50 % as well as the saturated and monounsaturated FA concentration. Notably, the desaturation index for C16 and C18 FAs that are correlated with adiposity were reduced. The concentration of several DHA-derived oxidized PUFAs were also enhanced. Faecal metagenomics sequencing revealed enriched abundance of Leptogranulimonas caecicola and Bacteroides sp. ZJ-18 and were positively correlated with several DHA- and ALA-derived oxidized PUFAs in ABA group. CONCLUSION Our study revealed the modulatory effect of physiological dose of ABA on attenuating visceral obesity, reducing hepatic steatosis, and promoting the production of anti-inflammatory oxidized PUFAs that were potentially mediated by the gut microbiota.

Abstract
Modulation of the gut microbiota has emerged as a promising approach for addressing the gastrointestinal and neurodevelopmental symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Consequently, this study aimed to evaluate the impact of four formulated synbiotics comprising Limoscilactobacillus fermentum K73, high-oleic palm oil and whey, on the gut microbiota composition of Colombian children with and without ASD. These components were encapsulated through high-shear emulsification and spray drying. The four synbiotics and their individual components were subjected to in vitro digestion and fermentation using samples of Colombian children gut microbiota. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), including lactic, acetic, propionic, and butyric acids, were quantified using HPLC-DAD, while serotonin was determined by an ELISA kit after in vitro fermentations. Changes in microbial structure were assessed by the sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene via next-generation sequencing (NGS). The results revealed a decrease in the abundance of genera like Bacteroides and Dorea in ASD-associated samples after the treatment with the synbiotics. Conversely, an increase in the relative abundance of probiotic-related genera, including Lactobacillus, Streptococcus, and Anaerostipes, was observed. Furthermore, the analysis of SCFAs and serotonin indicated that the synbiotic intervention resulted in an elevated butyric acid and microbial serotonin synthesis, alongside a decrease in propionic acid, which is changes considered beneficial in the context of ASD. This evidence suggests that synbiotics of L. fermentum K73 could represent a promising live biotherapeutic strategy for modulating the gut microbiota of children with ASD.

Abstract
Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a complex disorder characterized by a cluster of metabolic risk factors. Recent research highlights the gut microbiome's role in metabolic regulation, suggesting that modulation through probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics may provide a novel approach to managing MetS. This umbrella review aims to integrate insights from existing meta-analyses to explore how changes in gut microbiota influence key body measurement indicators in individuals with MetS. Methods A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases identified meta-analyses that assessed the impact of probiotics, prebiotics, or synbiotics on anthropometric indices in MetS patients. Results The results indicated that microbial therapy leads to a significant reduction in body mass index (BMI) (SMD: -0.22; 95% CI: -0.35 to -0.09; P < 0.01) and waist circumference (WC) (SMD: -0.47; 95% CI: -0.80 to -0.15; P < 0.01). However, microbial therapy did not significantly affect body fat mass (SMD: -0.30; 95% CI: -0.64 to 0.02; P = 0.06), body fat percentage (SMD: -0.29; 95% CI: -0.62 to 0.03; P = 0.07), waist-to-hip ratio (SMD: -0.09; 95% CI: -0.46 to 0.28; P = 0.63), and weight (SMD: -0.06; 95% CI: -0.21 to 0.08; P = 0.37). Conclusions Gut microbial modulation, mainly through probiotics and synbiotics, shows promise in reducing BMI and WC in MetS patients. However, its effects on other anthropometric indices remain uncertain, warranting further high-quality research to fully understand microbial interventions' therapeutic potential.

Abstract
Safflower seed oil, rich in linoleic acid, has a high ω6/ω3 ratio due to its negligible ω3 content, which is potentially linked to inflammation and metabolic disorders. Despite its recognized health potential, excessive consumption of pure safflower oil can lead to adverse outcomes. To address a possible solution to solve this problem, this study optimized the ω6/ω3 ratio by blending safflower oil with ω3-rich flaxseed oil, and investigated whether the nutritional profile and health benefits of the ω3-supplemented safflower oil could be improved. Results have shown that in high-fat diet-fed mice, the optimized safflower oil significantly reduced body weight gain, fat mass, and improved glucose tolerance. The optimized safflower oil also improved the serum lipid profiles by lowering triglyceride, total cholesterol, and LDL-C levels, while reducing pro-inflammatory markers. Moreover, the adjusted ω6/ω3 ratios led to increased microbial diversity, a favorable Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, and enrichment of beneficial bacteria like Helicobacteraceae, while reducing pro-inflammatory bacteria such as Deferribacteraceae. These changes correlated with improved lipid metabolism and reduced fat accumulation. This study not only highlights a practical approach to improving safflower oil's health benefits but also provides a strategic direction for breeding programs to enhance its ω3 synthesis pathways, positioning safflower oil as a competitive and innovative alternative in the health food market.

Abstract
Sleep deprivation is a prevalent issue in contemporary society, with significant ramifications for both physical and mental well-being. Emerging scientific evidence illuminates its intricate interplay with the gut-brain axis, a vital determinant of neurological function. Disruptions in sleep patterns disturb the delicate equilibrium of the gut microbiota, resulting in dysbiosis characterized by alterations in microbial composition and function. This dysbiosis contributes to the exacerbation of neurological disorders such as depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline through multifaceted mechanisms, including heightened neuroinflammation, disturbances in neurotransmitter signalling, and compromised integrity of the gut barrier. In response to these challenges, there is a burgeoning interest in therapeutic interventions aimed at restoring gut microbial balance and alleviating neurological symptoms precipitated by sleep deprivation. Probiotics, dietary modifications, and behavioural strategies represent promising avenues for modulating the gut microbiota and mitigating the adverse effects of sleep disturbances on neurological health. Moreover, the advent of personalized interventions guided by advanced omics technologies holds considerable potential for tailoring treatments to individualized needs and optimizing therapeutic outcomes. Interdisciplinary collaboration and concerted research efforts are imperative for elucidating the underlying mechanisms linking sleep, gut microbiota, and neurological function. Longitudinal studies, translational research endeavours, and advancements in technology are pivotal for unravelling the complex interplay between these intricate systems.

Abstract
Background/Objectives: As a widely consumed, nutritious, and affordable food, eggs and their derivatives' impacts on obesity remain inconclusive. In this study, we aimed to determine the association between egg and egg-derived cholesterol consumption, and their change trajectories, with obesity among Chinese adults. Methods: Longitudinal data collected by the China Health and Nutrition Survey from 1997 to 2015 were analyzed. The latent growth mixture model was used to identify eggs and egg-derived cholesterol consumption trajectories. Cox proportional hazard models with shared frailty were used to analyze the association between egg and egg-derived cholesterol consumption, and their change trajectories, with obesity. Results: Data from 10,971 and 9483 participants aged ≥18 years old were used for the analyses of general obesity and central obesity, respectively. Compared to participants with an average egg intake of 0.1-50.0 g/d during the follow-up period, adults who never consumed eggs or those with an average egg intake of 50.1-100.0 g/d and >100.0 g/d had a higher risk of general obesity, with hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of 1.31 (1.08, 1.58), 1.30 (1.07, 1.60), and 1.98 (1.17, 3.35), respectively, and had a higher risk of central obesity, with HRs (95% CIs) of 1.17 (1.04, 1.31), 1.31 (1.14, 1.50), and 1.64 (1.15, 2.36), respectively. Participants with a "Baseline Low-Significant Rising Pattern" or a "Baseline High-Rising then Falling Pattern" of egg consumption trajectories during the follow-up period had a higher risk of general obesity, with HRs (95% CIs) of 1.56 (1.25, 1.93) and 1.38 (1.13, 1.69), respectively, and central obesity, with HRs (95% CIs) of 1.47 (1.29, 1.68) and 1.52 (1.34, 1.72), respectively. Compared to the second quartile (Q2) group of the average egg-derived cholesterol intake during the follow-up period, Q1, Q3, and Q4 groups had a higher risk of general obesity, with HRs (95% CIs) of 1.28 (1.06,1.54), 1.21 (1.02, 1.44), and 1.43 (1.19, 1.71), respectively, and a higher risk of central obesity, with HRs (95% CIs) of 1.20 (1.08, 1.33), 1.11 (1.01, 1.23), and 1.32 (1.19, 1.46), respectively. Participants with a "Baseline Low-Significant Rising Pattern" or with a "Baseline High-Rising then Falling Pattern" of egg-derived cholesterol consumption during the follow-up period had a higher risk of general obesity, with HRs (95% CIs) of 1.54 (1.25, 1.92) and 1.37 (1.15, 1.64), respectively, and a higher risk of central obesity, with HRs (95% CIs) of 1.46 (1.28, 1.68) and 1.47 (1.32, 1.64), respectively. Conclusions: Both the insufficient and excessive intake of eggs and egg-derived cholesterol tended to be associated with a higher risk of general and central obesity. Suddenly increasing or consistently high levels of egg and egg-derived cholesterol intake seemed to be associated with a higher risk of obesity. To prevent obesity, people should consume a moderate amount of eggs and egg-derived cholesterol.

Abstract
Quantity and source of dietary protein intakes impact the gut microbiota differently. However, these effects have not been systematically studied. This review aimed to investigate these effects whilst controlling for fiber intake. Seven databases were searched, with 50 and 15 randomized controlled trials selected for the systematic review and network meta-analysis respectively. Most gut microbiota-related outcomes showed no significant differences between different protein and fiber intake combinations. Compared to Normal Protein, High Fiber intakes, High Protein, Low Fiber (HPLF) intakes showed greater fecal valerate (SMD = 0.79, 95% CrI: 0.35, 1.24) and plasma trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) (SMD = 2.90, 95% CrI: 0.16, 5.65) levels. HPLF intakes also showed greater fecal propionate (SMD = 0.49, 95% CrI: 0.02, 1.07) and valerate (SMD = 0.79, 95% CrI: 0.31, 1.28) levels compared to High Protein, High Fiber intakes. Greater plasma TMAO levels were observed with greater animal protein intakes. Overall, protein quantity and source do not generally alter the gut microbiota composition, although protein quantity can influence microbiota function via modulations in proteolytic fermentation. Both protein and fiber intake should be considered when assessing the impact of dietary protein on the gut microbiota. This trial was registered at PROSPERO (CRD42023391270).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obesity is a multifactorial disease reaching pandemic proportions with increasing healthcare costs, advocating the development of better prevention and treatment strategies. Previous research indicates that the gut microbiome plays an important role in metabolic, hormonal, and neuronal cross-talk underlying eating behavior. We therefore aim to examine the effects of prebiotic and neurocognitive behavioral interventions on food decision-making and to assay the underlying mechanisms in a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT). METHOD This study uses a parallel arm RCT design with a 26-week intervention period. We plan to enroll 90 participants (male/diverse/female) living with overweight or obesity, defined as either a Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) ≥ 0.9 (male)/0.85 (diverse, female) or a Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 25 kg/m2. Key inclusion criteria are 18-60 years of age and exclusion criteria are type 2 diabetes, psychiatric disease, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) contraindications. The interventions comprise either a daily supplementary intake of 30 g soluble fiber (inulin), or weekly neurocognitive behavioral group sessions, compared to placebo (equicaloric maltodextrin). At baseline and follow-up, food decision-making is assessed utilizing task-based MRI. Secondary outcome measures include structural MRI, eating habits, lifestyle factors, personality traits, and mood. Further, we obtain fecal and blood samples to investigate gut microbiome composition and related metabolites. DISCUSSION This study relies on expanding research suggesting that dietary prebiotics could improve gut microbiome composition, leading to beneficial effects on gut-brain signaling and higher-order cognitive functions. In parallel, neurocognitive behavioral interventions have been proposed to improve unhealthy eating habits and metabolic status. However, causal evidence on how these "bottom-up" and "top-down" processes affect food decision-making and neuronal correlates in humans is still scarce. In addition, microbiome, and gut-brain-axis-related mediating mechanisms remain unclear. The present study proposes a comprehensive approach to assess the effects of these gut-brain-related processes influencing food decision-making in overweight and obesity. Abstract
The human microbiota constitute a very complex ecosystem of microorganisms inhabiting both the inside and outside of our bodies, in which health maintenance and disease modification are the main regulatory features. The recent explosion of microbiome research has begun to detail its important role in neurological health, particularly concerning cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), a disorder associated with cognitive decline and vascular dementia. This narrative review represents state-of-the-art knowledge of the intimate, complex interplay between microbiota and brain health through the gut-brain axis (GBA) and the emerging role of glymphatic system dysfunction (glymphopathy) and circulating cell-derived microparticles (MPs) as mediators of these interactions. We discuss how microbial dysbiosis promotes neuroinflammation, vascular dysfunction, and impaired waste clearance in the brain, which are critical factors in the pathogenesis of CSVD. Further, we discuss lifestyle factors that shape the composition and functionality of the microbiota, focusing on sleep as a modifiable risk factor in neurological disorders. This narrative review presents recent microbiome research from a neuroscientific and vascular perspective to establish future therapeutic avenues in targeting the microbiota to improve brain health and reduce the burden of CSVD.

Abstract
Edible fungi polysaccharides (EFPs) and gut microbiota (GM) play an important role in lipid metabolism. The structure of GM is complex and can be dynamically affected by the diet. EFPs can be used as dietary intervention to improve lipid metabolism directly, or by regulate the GM to participate in the host lipid metabolism by a complex mechanism. In this paper, we reviewed that EFPs regulate the balance of GM by increasing the number of beneficial bacteria and decreasing the number of harmful bacteria in the intestinal tract. The metabolites of GM are mainly bile acids (BAs), short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and lipopolysaccharides (LPS). EFPs can promote the synthesis of BAs and increase the content of SCFAs that produced by GM fermented EFPs, but reduce the content of LPS to regulate lipid metabolism. This review provides a valuable reference for further elucidation of the relationship between EFPs-GM-lipid metabolism and EFPs targeted regulation of GM to improve public health.

Abstract
Introduction This study aimed to investigate the effects of a low-fishmeal diet (LF, substituting soybean meal for 40% fish meal) and the supplementation of 500 mg/kg and 1000 mg/kg Yu Ping Feng (YPF) polysaccharides on the growth performance, antioxidant enzyme activities, intestinal ultrastructure, non-specific immunity, and microbiota of Macrobrachium rosenbergii. Methods The study involved the administration of different diets to M. rosenbergii, including a control diet, a low-fishmeal diet (LF), and LF diets supplemented with 500 mg/kg and 1000 mg/kg YPF polysaccharides. Growth performance, antioxidant enzyme activities, intestinal ultrastructure, non-specific immunity, and microbiota were assessed. Results The LF diet significantly reduced growth performance parameters compared to the control group. However, YPF supplementation notably improved these parameters, with the greatest improvement observed at a 1000 mg/kg dosage. Antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, GSH-PX) were diminished in the LF group, accompanied by elevated MDA levels, whereas YPF supplementation restored these activities and reduced MDA levels. Ultrastructural analysis revealed that the LF diet caused intestinal villi detachment and peritrophic matrix (PM) shedding, which were alleviated by YPF. Gene expression related to PM formation (GS, CHS, EcPT) was downregulated in the LF group but significantly upregulated in the 1000P group. Non-specific immune gene expressions (IMD, Relish, IκBα) and enzyme activities (NO, iNOS) were suppressed in the LF group but enhanced by YPF supplementation. Microbial community analysis showed reduced diversity and altered composition in the LF group, with increased Proteobacteria and decreased Firmicutes, which were partially restored by YPF. Correlation analysis revealed that Lactobacillus and Chitinibacter play pivotal roles in regulating intestinal health. Lactobacillus exhibited a positive relationship with the intestinal PM and immune-related indicators, whereas Chitinibacter was negatively associated with these factors. Discussion These results highlight the adverse impacts of a low-fishmeal diet on the intestinal health of M. rosenbergii and demonstrate the beneficial effects of YPF polysaccharides in alleviating these negative consequences through various mechanisms, including improved growth performance, enhanced antioxidant enzyme activities, restored intestinal ultrastructure, and modulated immune responses. The findings suggest that YPF supplementation could be a valuable strategy for mitigating the negative effects of low-fishmeal diets in aaquaculture.

Abstract
High-fat diets (HFDs) shape the gut microbiome and promote obesity, inflammation, and liver steatosis. Fish and soybean are part of a healthy diet; however, the impact of these fats, in the absence of sucrose, on gut microbial dysbiosis and its association with liver steatosis remains unclear. Here, we investigated the effect of sucrose-free soybean oil-and fish oil-based high fat diets (HFDs) (SF-Soy-HFD and SF-Fish-HFD, respectively) on gut dysbiosis, obesity, steatosis, hepatic inflammation, and insulin resistance. C57BL/6 mice were fed these HFDs for 24 weeks. Both diets had comparable effects on liver and total body weights. But 16S-rRNA sequencing of the gut content revealed induction of gut dysbiosis at different taxonomic levels. The microbial communities were clearly separated, showing differential dysbiosis between the two HFDs. Compared with the SF-Fish-HFD control group, the SF-Soy-HFD group had an increased abundance of Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Deferribacteres, but a lower abundance of Verrucomicrobia. The Clostridia/Bacteroidia (C/B) ratio was higher in the SF-Soy-HFD group (3.11) than in the SF-Fish-HFD group (2.5). Conversely, the Verrucomicrobiacae/S24_7 (also known as Muribaculaceae family) ratio was lower in the SF-Soy-HFD group (0.02) than that in the SF-Fish-HFD group (0.75). The SF-Soy-HFD group had a positive association with S24_7, Clostridiales, Allobaculum, Coriobacteriaceae, Adlercreutzia, Christensenellaceae, Lactococcus, and Oscillospira, but was related to a lower abundance of Akkermansia, which maintains gut barrier integrity. The gut microbiota in the SF-Soy-HFD group had predicted associations with host genes related to fatty liver and inflammatory pathways. Mice fed the SF-Soy-HFD developed liver steatosis and showed increased transcript levels of genes associated with de novo lipogenesis (Acaca, Fasn, Scd1, Elovl6) and cholesterol synthesis (Hmgcr) pathways compared to those in the SF-Fish-HFD-group. No differences were observed in the expression of fat uptake genes (Cd36 and Fabp1). The expression of the fat efflux gene (Mttp) was reduced in the SF-Soy-HFD group. Moreover, hepatic inflammation markers (Tnfa and Il1b) were notably expressed in SF-Soy-HFD-fed mice. In conclusion, SF-Soy-HFD feeding induced gut dysbiosis in mice, leading to steatosis, hepatic inflammation, and impaired glucose homeostasis.

Abstract
The utilization of dietary components to support gut function and the health of young animals is an important factor for improved performance. The influence of high dietary fat levels in a low or high energy density diet on the performance of weaned piglets in relation to intestinal absorptive function, amino acid utilization, oxidative stress, and microbial metabolites was assessed in this study. The study examined the effect of two different diets containing either a low energy density/high-fat level or a high energy density/high-fat level. A total of 16 healthy weaners (9.60 ± 0.13 kg) were allocated to one of the two dietary treatments. There were eight weaners per treatment. Results showed that feed intake and body weight gain of weaners were increased by the diet of high energy density/high-fat level (p < 0.05), but the feed efficiency showed an increased tendency of significance (p = 0.05). In the duodenum, the villus height (VH) and VH/crypt depth (CD) ratio (VH:CD) were increased by dietary high energy density/high fat. In the jejunum and ileum, the CD was increased by low energy density/high-fat diet, while the goblet cell count and VH:CD were increased by dietary high energy density/high-fat level. Methionine, lysine and phenylalanine concentrations were increased by high energy density/high-fat diet while low energy density/high-fat diet showed an increased tendency to increase citrulline and ornithine concentrations in the piglet. Oxidative stress marker, lactase enzyme activity and serum calcium concentration were increased by a high energy density/high-fat diet. Increased dietary fat in all diets induced diarrhoea in the weaners (p < 0.01). It was concluded that a dietary high energy density/high-fat diet seems to positively modulate gut absorptive function, serum amino acid (methionine and lysine), calcium levels and increased oxidative stress markers in the weaned piglets.

Abstract
Porphyra haitanensis, a red seaweed species, represents a bountiful and sustainable marine resource. P. haitanensis polysaccharide (PHP), has garnered considerable attention for its numerous health benefits. However, the comprehensive utilization of PHP on an industrial scale has been limited by the lack of comprehensive information. In this review, we endeavor to discuss and summarize recent advancements in PHP extraction, purification, and characterization. We emphasize the multifaceted mechanisms through which PHP promotes gastrointestinal health. Furthermore, we present a summary of compelling evidence supporting PHP's protective role against oxidative stress. This includes its demonstrated potent antioxidant properties, its ability to neutralize free radicals, and its capacity to enhance the activity of antioxidant enzymes. The information presented here also lays the theoretical groundwork for future research into the structural and functional aspects of PHP, as well as its potential applications in functional foods.

Abstract
Purpose When examining the underlying processes of obesity, evaluation of gut flora and energy homeostasis can be crucial since disruption of the normal gut microbiota community and energy imbalances are significant factors in the development of obesity. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the relative abundance of important obesity modulator gut microbiota (including Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Bifidobactrium spp., Lactobacillus spp., Bacteroides fragilis, Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, Akkermansia muciniphila, and Escherichia coli) in fecal samples of normometabilic and hypometabolic overweight/obese individuals. Methods This matched case-control study conducted on 36 healthy women aged 18-50 years old. An indirect calorimeter and impedance body analyzer were used to assess resting metabolic rate (RMR) and body composition, respectively. Dietary intake and physical activity were assessed using questionnaires. To determine the abundance of the abovementioned gut microbiota, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) method was performed. Moreover, ELISA kits were used to assess leptin, ghrelin, and insulin hormones. Results The results highlighted higher load of Firmicutes (p = 0.02), F. prausnitzii (p < 0.001), and B. fragilis (p = 0.02) in the normometabolic individuals compared to the hypometabolic ones. Besides, the positive correlation between the abundance of Firmicutes (β = 7.76 × 10-1, p = 0.01), F. prausnitzii (β = 1.29 × 10-5, p = 0.01), and B. fragilis (β = 4.13 × 10-6, p = 0.04) with the RMR have been shown. Whereas the abundance of Bacteroidetes, A. muciniphila, Lactobacillus spp., Bifidobactrium spp., and E. coli showed no significant difference (p > 0.05) and no significant correlation with the RMR except Lactobacillus spp. (β = 1.73 × 10-4, p = 0.01). Conclusion It seems that gut microbiota can be a potential target for refining host energy homeostasis and treating obesity and its consequences.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review delves into the complex interplay between obesity-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis and the progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), highlighting the potential of natural products in mitigating these effects. By integrating recent epidemiological data, we aim to provide a nuanced understanding of how obesity exacerbates T2DM through gut flora alterations. RECENT FINDINGS Advances in research have underscored the significance of bioactive ingredients in natural foods, capable of restoring gut microbiota balance, thus offering a promising approach to manage diabetes in the context of obesity. These findings build upon the traditional use of medicinal plants in diabetes treatment, suggesting a deeper exploration of their mechanisms of action. This comprehensive manuscript underscores the critical role of targeting gut microbiota dysbiosis in obesity-related T2DM management and by bridging traditional knowledge with current scientific evidence; we highlighted the need for continued research into natural products as a complementary strategy for comprehensive diabetes care.

Abstract
The limited tolerance of crustacean tissue physiology to a high-fat diet has captured the attention of researchers. Yet, investigations into the physiological response mechanisms of the crustacean intestinal barrier system to a high-fat diet are progressing slowly. Elucidating potential physiological mechanisms and determining the precise regulatory targets would be of great physiological and nutritional significance. This study established a high-fat diet-induced intestinal barrier damage model in Macrobrachium rosenbergii, and systematically investigated the functions of gut microbiota and its functional metabolites. The study achieved this by monitoring phenotypic indicators, conducting 16S rDNA sequencing, targeted metabolomics, and in vitro anaerobic fermentation of intestinal contents. Feeding prawns with control and high-fat diets for 8 weeks, the lipid level of 7 % in the CON diet and 12 % in the HF diet. Results showed that high-fat intake impaired the intestinal epithelial cells, intestinal barrier structure, and permeability of M. rosenbergii, activated the tight junction signaling pathway inhibiting factor NF-κB transcription factor Relish/myosin light chain kinase (MLCK), and suppressed the expression of downstream tight junction proteins zona occludens protein 1 (ZO-1) and Claudin. High-fat intake resulted in a significant increase in abundance of Aeromonas, Enterobacter, and Clostridium sensu stricto 3 genera, while Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, Bacteroides, and Ruminococcaceae UCG-010 genera were significantly decreased. Targeted metabolomics results of bile acids and short-chain fatty acids in intestinal contents and in vitro anaerobic fermentation products showed a marked rise in the abundance of DCA, 12-KetoLCA, 7,12-diketoLCA, and Isovaleric acid, and a significant reduction in the abundance of HDCA, CDCA, and Acetate in the HF group. Pearson correlation analysis revealed a substantial correlation between various genera (Clostridium sensu stricto 3, Lactobacillus, Bacteroides) and secondary metabolites (DCA, HDCA, 12-KetoLCA, Acetate), and the latter was significantly correlated with intestinal barrier function related genes (Relish, ZO-1, MLCK, vitamin D receptor, and ecdysone receptor). These findings indicate that gut microorganisms and their specific bile acids and short-chain fatty acid secondary metabolites play a crucial role in the process of high-fat-induced intestinal barrier damage of M. rosenbergii. Moreover, identifying and targeting these factors could facilitate precise regulation of high-fat nutrition for crustaceans.

Abstract
High-fat diet-induced obesity is a pandemic caused by an inactive lifestyle and increased consumption of Western diets and is a major risk factor for diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. In contrast, exercise can positively influence gut microbial diversity and is linked to a decreased inflammatory state. To understand the gut microbial variations associated with exercise and high-fat diet over time, we conducted a longitudinal study to examine the effect of covariates on gut microbial diversity and composition. Young mice were divided into four groups: Chow-diet (CHD), high-fat diet (HFD), high-fat diet + exercise (HFX), and exercise only (EXE) and underwent experimental intervention for 12 weeks. Fecal samples at week 0 and 12 were collected for DNA extraction, followed by 16S library preparation and sequencing. Data were analyzed using QIIME 2, R and MicrobiomeAnalyst. The Bacteroidetes-to-Firmicutes ratio decreased fivefold in the HFD and HFX groups compared to that in the CHD and EXE groups and increased in the EXE group over time. Alpha diversity was significantly increased in the EXE group longitudinally (p < 0.02), whereas diversity (Shannon, Faith's PD, and Fisher) and richness (ACE) was significantly reduced in the HFD (p < 0.005) and HFX (p < 0.03) groups over time. Beta diversity, based on the Jaccard, Bray-Curtis, and unweighted UniFrac distance metrics, was significant among the groups. Prevotella, Paraprevotella, Candidatus arthromitus, Lactobacillus salivarius, L. reuteri, Roseburia, Bacteroides uniformis, Sutterella, and Corynebacterium were differentially abundant in the chow-diet groups (CHD and EXE). Exercise significantly reduced the proportion of taxa characteristic of a high-fat diet, including Butyricimonas, Ruminococcus gnavus, and Mucispirillum schaedleri. Diet, age, and exercise significantly contributed to explaining the bacterial community structure and diversity in the gut microbiota. Modulating the gut microbiota and maintaining its stability can lead to targeted microbiome therapies to manage chronic and recurrent diseases and infections.

Abstract
There is a bidirectional relationship between the heart and the gut. The gut microbiota, the community of gut micro-organisms themselves, is an excellent gut-homeostasis keeper since it controls the growth of potentially harmful bacteria and protects the microbiota environment. There is evidence suggesting that a diet rich in fatty acids can be metabolized and converted by gut microbiota and hepatic enzymes to trimethyl-amine N-oxide (TMAO), a product that is associated with atherogenesis, platelet dysfunction, thrombotic events, coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure (HF), and, ultimately, death. HF, by inducing gut ischemia, congestion, and, consequently, gut barrier dysfunction, promotes the intestinal leaking of micro-organisms and their products, facilitating their entrance into circulation and thus stimulating a low-grade inflammation associated with an immune response. Drugs used for HF may alter the gut microbiota, and, conversely, gut microbiota may modify the pharmacokinetic properties of the drugs. The modification of lifestyle based mainly on exercise and a Mediterranean diet, along with the use of pre- or probiotics, may be beneficial for the gut microbiota environment. The potential role of gut microbiota in HF development and progression is the subject of this review.

Abstract
There is increasing evidence that the diet and nutritional status of women during pregnancy and lactation can modulate the microbiota of their milk and, therefore, the microbiota of the infant. An observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was carried out in a group of lactating women. Dietary intake during gestation and the first trimester of lactation was evaluated, and the microbiota was analyzed by 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequencing using the Illumina platform. Globally, Streptococcus spp. (32%), Staphylococcus spp. (17.3%), Corynebacterium spp. (5.1%) and Veillonella spp. (3.1%) were the predominant bacterial genera. The consumption of simple carbohydrates in gestation (rho = 0.55, p ≤ 0.01) and lactation (rho = 0.50, p ≤ 0.01) were positively correlated with Enterobacter spp. In lactation, a negative correlation was observed between the intake of simple carbohydrates and the genus Bifidobacterium spp. (rho = -0.51 p ≤ 0.01); furthermore, a positive correlation was identified between the intake of folic acid and Akkermansia spp. (rho = 0.47, p ≤ 0.01). Amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) associated with the delivery mode, employment relationship, the baby's gender, birth weight, the Body Mass Index (BMI) of the breastfeeding woman, and gestational weight gain were recovered as covariates in a linear mixed model. The results of this research showed that the maternal nutritional status and diet of women during gestation and lactation could modulate the microbiota of breast milk.

Abstract
The immune system is vital for safeguarding the human body against infections and inflammatory diseases. The role of diet and meal patterns in modulating immune function is complex, and highlighting this topic is crucial for identifying potential ways to improve immune health. In Europe, the Mediterranean diet and Western diet are the most common dietary patterns, and gaining an understanding of how they affect immune function is essential for public health. There are numerous inflammatory diseases that are observed in younger and older people. Some of the common diseases include polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), vasculitis, sarcopenia, cirrhosis, cancer, and fibromyalgia, but the main focus in this review article is on irritable bowel disease (IBD). In general, dietary choices can have an immense impact on the microbial flora of the gut in people with inflammatory diseases. The intake of Mediterranean-style foods promotes the growth of healthy bacteria that enhances the function of the immune system. On the other hand, it is mostly seen that the intake of Western-style foods leads to the growth of harmful gut bacteria that contributes to inflammation and disease development by weakening the immune system. Additionally, inflammation in the gut can impact brain function, leading to mood disorders, such as anxiety and depression. Rare inflammatory diseases, such as psoriasis and sarcoidosis, are of main interest in this article. All the above-mentioned common and rare inflammatory diseases have a certain relationship with the microbiota of the gut. The gut microbiome plays a significant role in IBD; fiber and prebiotic interventions may represent promising adjunct therapies for pediatric IBD by targeting the gut microbiome. By advancing a good overall arrangement of microorganisms in the stomach through dietary mediations, working on the side effects and alleviating of diseases might be conceivable. The gut microbiota can be affected differently by various dietary fatty acid types. There is also an involvement of genetics in the progression of IBD, such as transcriptional factors, and one gene of interest is the LCT gene, which encodes for lactase, an enzyme responsible for digesting lactose in the gut.

Abstract
Plant-based protein products, represented by "plant meat", are gaining more and more popularity as an alternative to animal proteins. In the present review, we aimed to update the current status of research and industrial growth of plant-based protein products, including plant-based meat, plant-based eggs, plant-based dairy products, and plant-based protein emulsion foods. Moreover, the common processing technology of plant-based protein products and its principles, as well as the emerging strategies, are given equal importance. The knowledge gap between the use of plant proteins and animal proteins is also described, such as poor functional properties, insufficient texture, low protein biomass, allergens, and off-flavors, etc. Furthermore, the nutritional and health benefits of plant-based protein products are highlighted. Lately, researchers are committed to exploring novel plant protein resources and high-quality proteins with enhanced properties through the latest scientific and technological interventions, including physical, chemical, enzyme, fermentation, germination, and protein interaction technology.

Abstract
PURPOSE High-fat diets have different metabolic responses via gut dysbiosis. In this review, we discuss the complex interaction between the intake of long- and medium-chain saturated fatty acids (SFAs), gut microbiota, and white adipose tissue (WAT) dysfunction, particularly focusing on the type of fat. RESULTS The evidence for the impact of dietary SFAs on the gut microbiota-WAT axis has been mostly derived from in vitro and animal models, but there is now also evidence emerging from human studies. Most current reports show that, in response to high long- and medium-chain SFA diets, WAT functions are altered and can be modulated from microbial metabolites in several manners; and it appears to be also modified under conditions of obesity. SFAs overconsumption can reduce bacterial content and disrupt the gut environment. Both long- and medium-chain SFAs may contribute to proinflammatory cytokines release and TLR4 cascade signaling, either by regulation of endotoxemia markers or myristoylated protein. Palmitic and stearic acids have pathological effects on the intestinal epithelium, microbes, and inflammatory and lipogenic WAT profiles. While myristic and lauric acids display somewhat controversial outcomes, from probiotic effects and contribution to weight loss to cardiometabolic alterations from WAT inflammation. CONCLUSION Identifying an interference of distinct types of SFA in the binomial gut microbiota-WAT may elucidate essential mechanisms of metabolic endotoxemia, which may be the key to triggering obesity, innovating the therapeutic tools for this disease.

Abstract
The literature review presents the results of modern studies of the relationship between diet and intestinal microbiota in the regulation of metabolic disorders. Metabolic syndrome, which is a symptom complex that combines abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia and arterial hypertension, remains an important problem, being a risk factor for cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, oncological diseases and the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Although the pathogenesis of the metabolic syndrome has not yet been fully elucidated, it is known that visceral obesity and its associated complications, such as dyslipidemia and increased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, play a central role. The article presents data on the impact of the consumption of certain food products, the inclusion of plant biologically active substances (flavonoids, polyphenols, etc.) in the diet, as well as the use of elimination diets with the exclusion of carbohydrates or fats from the diet, on reducing the risk of cardiovascular accidents, levels of fasting glucose, total cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides, C-reactive protein, leptin, insulin, reduction in body weight and waist circumference, reduction in the level of circulating endotoxins and changes in the activity of immunocompetent cells. Data are presented on the possible influence of the intestinal microbiota in maintaining inflammation and the formation of degenerative changes in the body. The role of changes in the ratio of the levels of pathogenic microflora, bifidobacteria and lactobacilli in the formation of a pathological condition is shown.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study intended to determine the associations between gut microbiota and glucose response in healthy individuals and analyze the connection between the gut microbiome and glucose-metabolism-related parameters. METHODS Fecal bacterial composition and anthropometric, body composition, body fat distribution, and biochemical measures were analyzed. A 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was given to each participant to investigate changes in glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), insulin, and glucose. The whole body fat and the regions of interest of local body composition were analyzed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), and gut microbiota composition was assessed through variable regions (V3-V4) of the bacterial 16s ribosomal RNA gene using high-throughput sequencing techniques. Spearman correlation analysis was used to evaluate the association between gut microbiota and clinical and metabolic changes. RESULTS The number of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) demonstrated a reduction in the diversity and composition of gut microbiota associated with enhanced adiposity, dyslipidemia, insulin resistance, and hyperglycemia. The alpha diversity revealed that microbiota diversity, richness, and composition were higher in the African group and lower in the Chinese group. Principal coordinates analysis (PCoA) plots of beta diversity showed significant variability in gut microbial community structure between the two groups (p = 0.0009). LEfSe analysis showed that phylum Bacteroidetes was significantly more abundant in the Chinese group, and this group also harbored members of the order Bacteroidales, family Bacteroidaceae, and genus Bacteroides. In contrast, the phylum Verrucomicrobia was significantly more prevalent in the African group (all p < 0.05). Concerning species, metastats analysis revealed 8 species in the Chinese group and 18 species in the African group that were significantly abundant. Spearman's correlation analysis demonstrated that gut microbiota correlated with the factors that related to glucose metabolism. CONCLUSION Our data suggest that there is an interaction between gut microbiota, host physiology, and glucometabolic pathways, and this could contribute to adiposity and pathophysiology of hyperlipidemia, insulin resistance, and hyperglycemia. These findings provide an important basis for determining the relation between the gut microbiota and the pathogenesis of various metabolic disorders.
