Abstract
Tires, as a globally utilized product, emit pollutants including various tire-additive chemicals (TACs), and tire and road wear particles (TRWPs) containing substantial microplastics. Several TACs have been proven to have aquatic toxicity, induce health risks including endocrine disruption, allergic effects, and cardiovascular problems, while TRWPs are also very strongly suspected. With the emergence of multiple novel TAC derivatives recently, yet knowledge of their occurrence, spatial distribution, and potential associations remains largely insufficient. In this work, we have systematically investigated 25 TACs, including para-phenylenediamine (PPDs), several newly identified quinones (PPD-Qs) first reported in urban dust, and TRWPs across road dust from Hong Kong and Berlin. By coupling UPLC-MS/MS and pyrolysis-GC/MS analyses, we achieved concurrent quantification of trace TAC derivatives and TRWPs. Distinct spatial patterns of these tire-derived contaminants were identified, in which Hong Kong exhibited higher TACs linked to dense traffic, while the TRWP levels reached 9420 μg/g near auto factory in Berlin. Highway dust contained maximum contaminant loads of both TACs (5.0-fold higher) and TRWPs (5.3-fold higher) compared to other road types. Significantly linear associations were found between emerging TAC derivatives and TRWPs, implying their potential as candidate markers. Exposure assessments revealed PPDs and PPD-Qs intake doses surpassed benzothiazole and its derivatives, highlighting non-negligible risks caused by emerging TAC derivatives. This work establishes a framework for evaluating region-specific emission drivers and provides critical baseline data of multiple tire-related contaminants across different compartments. Potential markers for TRWPs were identified, which may be further utilized for their identification and determination.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWP) are potential pollutants of emerging concern. Therefore, the EU is set to regulate the TWP emissions under the new Euro 7 emission standard. For Germany it is estimated that up to 20,000 t TWP reach the aquatic environment. Main transport pathways are via road runoff and separate sewage systems. Studies indicate that, apart from ecotoxicological concerns, the negatively charged surface of TWP can adsorb heavy metals like Cr, Ni, Zn, Cd and Pb, potentially deteriorating the chemical water quality of rivers. As rivers usually undergo a salt gradient from their source to the sea this may change the adsorption of heavy metals. We investigated the influence of salinity on the heavy metal adsorption on TWP using water samples from the Freiberger Mulde (Saxony, Germany), enriched with NaCl to simulate the salinity representative of different rivers in the Elbe catchment area, and additional water samples (Elbe, Saale, Bode, Schlenze). The adsorption of Cd and Zn appear to be highly salt-dependent. Above 12 mg L-1 Cl-, no significant adsorption was observed. It is assumed that both metals form [MCl4]2- complexes which are repelled from the negative surface of TWP. The potential in building these complexes is high enough to dissolve previously adsorbed Cd from TWP. These findings are important for assessing water quality of river systems as well as runoff filtration and water retention systems. In winter, for instance, when de-icing salt is applied, Cd and Zn bound on TWP may be mobilized entering water systems.

Abstract
Data on the fate of tyre wear particles (TWPs) within aquatic environments is limited. This study quantified TWPs entering estuaries in stormwater drainage and atmospheric fallout, and once they have reached the marine environment, within surface waters and sediments. TWPs were found at concentrations of 0.4 mg/L, 2.55 mg/m2/d, 0.00063 mg/L, and 0.96 g/kg respectively. Samples were partitioned by size to examine the distribution of TWP mass. 80-90% of TWP mass entering marine systems (stormwater and atmospheric fallout) lay between 31-125 µm. Larger particles preferentially accumulated in sediments where ∼50 % of TWP mass was >250 μm, compared to surface waters where the size class 15-63 μm accounted for ∼80 %. This study provides novel data on the sizes and concentrations of TWP pollution in coastal environments. Such data are of importance in determining biological exposures. Notably, the presence of TWPs in surface waters demonstrates their potential for transport over longer distances.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWPs) are among the most prevalent microplastics in the environment, with potential detrimental effects on ecosystem health and functionality. While little is known how the effects of TWPs on soil physicochemical and microbial properties vary across different soil types, and if so, which factors contribute to this variability. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a laboratory experiment involving soils from 59 grassland plots across two sampling regions in Germany, each experienced varying land use intensities. These soils were treated with and without TWPs at a concentration of 10 mg g-1. At harvest, we measured soil water-stable aggregates (WSA), pH, respiration, and decomposition rate. Our results revealed that TWPs negatively, neutrally, or positively impacted these parameters depending on soil types. Random forest analysis indicated that the variability in TWP effects was significantly explained by grazing frequency for WSA (14.5%), by clay content for pH (9%), by bulk density for respiration (7.9%), and by silt content for decomposition rate (12%). Partial dependence analysis further suggested that low-intensity grazing (∼ 0.7 to 1.2) reduced TWP effects on WSA; clay content (420 to 550 g kg-1) increased TWP effects on pH; bulk density (0.75 to 0.88) decreased TWP effects, and silt content (460 to 620 g kg-1) enhanced TWP effects on decomposition rate, with the identified thresholds of 1.45, 353 g kg-1, 0.84, and 327 353 g kg-1, respectively. These results highlighted the context-dependent nature of TWP pollution, with significant variability observed across different sampling points. Additionally, our findings suggest that TWP pollution is particularly of concern in soils with high clay, silt, high bulk density, and areas with intensive land-use intensity. Our study contributes to a better understanding of the mechanisms by which TWPs impact soil, and how these effects are regulated by environmental factors.

Abstract
Tyre and road wear particles (TRWPs) are a significant yet often underestimated source of environmental pollution, contributing to the accumulation of microplastics and a complex mixture of contaminants in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Despite their prevalence, the long-term evolutionary effects of TRWPs, beyond their immediate toxicity, remain largely unknown. In this study, we assessed mutagenicity in the non-biting midge Chironomus riparius, upon exposure to urban sediment collected from a runoff sedimentation basin. To assess the extent of mutagenic effects over multiple generations, we combined the urban sediment exposure model with short-term mutation accumulation lines (MALs) and subsequent whole genome sequencing (WGS). The study was conducted over five generations, with urban sediment concentrations of 0.5 % and 10 %. Our results reveal that the exposure to urban sediment significantly increases mutation rates compared to control groups by 50 %, independent of concentration (0.5 % and 10 %). To infer potential causal processes, we conducted a comparative analysis using known mutational spectra from previous studies. This comparison showed that the mutation profiles induced by urban sediment clearly clustered with those caused by Benzo[a]Pyrene (BaP), a known Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH). A comprehensive chemical characterization of the sediment confirmed a considerable impact of road runoff and traffic-related contamination, including PAHs of primarily petrogenic origin. This suggests that PAH-like compounds present in urban sediments may play a significant role in the observed mutagenic effects. Our study shows that urban sediments influence mutation rates and alter mutational spectra in exposed organisms, potentially compromising genomic stability and shaping evolutionary trajectories. These genetic changes can have profound long-term effects on population dynamics and ecosystem health, underlining the importance of understanding the evolutionary consequences of environmental pollution. Additionally, we show that comparatively analysing of mutational spectra may provide valuable insights into mutational processes.

Abstract
Current research on microplastics (MPs) primarily focuses on investigating environmental samples, often lacking in identifying the actual sources and emission quantities. Little is known about the quantity of bicycle tire abrasion in real-use scenarios. Mountain biking, a popular outdoor sport produces tire wear particles (TWP) directly in natural environments. This study quantifies microplastic abrasion from mountain bike tires in real-life usage. We measured the weight loss of mountain bike tires gravimetrically over their period of use to quantify abrasion throughout their lifecycle. We found an abrasion rate of 3.62 g (median) per 100 km per mountain bike. The rate was higher for the rear tire (median 2.32 g; IQR = 1.58 to 3.59 g) compared to the front tire (median 1.32 g; IQR = 1.06 to 2.64 g). After higher abrasion rates of the new tire, rates decrease, and average abrasion stabilizes at around 1.43 g (median front and rear; IQR = 1.07 to 1.60 g) per 100 km per tire. This dynamic is due to the abrasion of excess material and sharp edges produced during manufacturing. Gravimetrically measuring material loss proved effective in assessing MP abrasion from mountain bike tires. Combining these findings with average bicycle kilometrage statistics for Germany results in an emission of 59 to 88 g of tire material per mountain biker per year. Calculated emissions from cycling (rider-number * average kilometrage * abrasion rate) would contribute <1 % to the total annual MPs emissions, significantly lower than motorized vehicle tires, which contribute about 30 %.

Abstract
Microplastic pollution has emerged as the second most significant scientific issue in environmental science and ecology. Similarly, the biological effects of tire wear particles (TWPs) have garnered considerable research attention; however, studies on chronic TWP leachate toxicity at environmentally relevant concentrations remain sparse. Here, we investigated the effects of TWP leachate at environmentally relevant concentrations (0.3 mg/L and 3 mg/L) on multigenerational and transgenerational Daphnia pulex for 21 days/generation, spanning three generations (F0-F2). Growth and reproductive indices (body length, growth rate, time to first clutch, number of clutches, and total offspring/female) across generations were analyzed. Multigenerational exposure to TWP leachate did not cause D. pulex death, but impaired growth and development, prolonged sexual maturity time, and reduced reproductive capacity. The transgenerational exposure group (3 mg/L) also exhibited some sub-lethal effects, such as delayed reproduction, suggesting a transgenerational impact. Gene transcription analyses and weighted gene co-expression network analysis showed that the most impacted pathways were associated with lysosome function, apoptosis, and glutathione metabolism, indicating that TWP leachate exposure compromised immune defense mechanisms and disrupted APs, CTSB, GST, DUSP1, and ERN1 gene expression. These findings underscore multigenerational toxicity effects and TWP leachate transmission patterns on aquatic organisms at realistic environmental concentrations.

Understanding their degradation mechanisms and subsequent accumulation over time is important to gain insights into the fate and impact of these particles in the environment. Accelerated UV-ageing was performed on cryomilled tyre tread particles and TRWPs from a road simulator to investigate the abiotic degradation of rubber. Degradation was followed with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) that led to an average abiotic degradation rate of 0.025 day-1 when corrected for the acceleration factor. Static light scattering (SLS) showed that during degradation, the average particle size reduced by 0.03 μm day-1 and smaller particles <10 μm were formed. Further characterisation with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX) confirmed these findings and showed that the sulphur content is reduced through UV-ageing suggesting that crosslinking breakage may be a mechanism of degradation. Analysis with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS) showed a substantial decrease in chemical additives by UV-induced oxidation and breakdown. Finally, with measurements in the field TRWP particle sizes and accumulation times were studied, confirming the experimentally determined degradation mechanisms.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWP) are a major source of microplastics in the environment. Despite their prevalence, the effects of tire particle leachates on marine microplankton communities remains poorly understood. In this study, we assessed the acute impacts of tire particle leachates on the structure of coastal microplankton assemblages from the Canary Islands. Five laboratory experiments were conducted, exposing microplankton to a range of leachate dilutions over 72 h, with TWP leachates prepared from an initial concentration of 1 g L⁻¹ .Our results revealed that the abundances of diatoms, most dinoflagellates, and ciliates were significantly reduced following exposure to leachates, with median effective concentrations (EC50) ranging from 30 to 660 mg L-1 depending on the plankton community. Interestingly, Ostreopsis cf. ovata, a harmful algal bloom (HAB)-forming species, exhibited relatively high tolerance to tire particle leachates compared to other microplankton. Compared to other marine biota, ciliates appear to be most vulnerable plankton group to tire particle leachates (EC50 = 30 and 146 mg L-1). The higher tolerance of O. cf. ovata to pollution compared to other phytoplankton species (resource competitors), in combination with other factors, may contribute to the rise of HABs in polluted coastal areas. Although field data on TWP are limited, the observed negative effects on microplankton occurred at environmentally relevant concentrations. Our results indicate that TWP pollution can significantly impact marine planktonic communities, highlighting the urgent need to reduce TWP emissions and develop less toxic tire rubber additives.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) have become pervasive pollutants in terrestrial ecosystems, raising significant ecological risks and human health concerns. Despite growing attention, a comprehensive understanding of their quantification, sources, emissions, transport, degradation, and accumulation in soils remains incomplete. This review synthesizes the current knowledge on the anthropogenic activities contributing to soil MP contamination, both intentional and unintentional behaviors, spanning sectors including agriculture, domestic activities, transportation, construction, and industry. Furthermore, it examines the spatial distribution, accumulation, and abundance of MPs across various land use types, alongside a critical assessment of existing quantification methodologies. While the predominant metric for MP quantification is particle number concentration, integrating mass and area concentration enhances the ability to compare pollution levels, assess fluxes, and conduct risk analyses. Additionally, the review explores the transport behavior of MPs in soil, distinguishing between external mechanisms (abiotic factors: wind, leaching, and runoff, biotic factors: soil bioturbation and food chain interactions), and internal mechanisms that are impacted by the characteristics of MPs themselves (e.g., shape, color, size, density, surface properties), soil properties (e.g., porosity, pH, ionic strength, organic matter and mineral content), coexisting substances, and soil structural dynamics. The study of MP transport in soil remains in its early stages, with substantial gaps in knowledge. Future research should focus on integrating number, mass concentration, and area concentration for the more holistic quantification of MP abundance, and prioritize the development of more accurate and efficient methodologies. In addition, the investigation of MP transport and degradation processes under varying environmental conditions and soil management practices is critical for addressing this emerging environmental challenge.

Abstract
Tire and road wear particles (TRWPs) are an appreciable source of microplastics (MPs); however, knowledge of their large-scale occurrence and mass flux based on robust sampling and quantification is limited. Herein, the first city-wide survey of TRWPs across environmental compartments (road dust, snowbank, water, and sediment from rivers and lakes) along four ring roads (beltways) in Beijing was performed. TRWP concentrations (n = 74) were quantified using bonded-sulfur as a marker to reveal the city-wide spatial distributions and adopted to establish a framework estimating TRWP emission factors (EFs) and mass flux from generation to remote atmospheric, terrestrial, and aquatic transport. The TRWP concentrations were 0.46 × 104-3.55 × 104 μg/g (road dust), 0.65-46.18 mg/L (water), 0.28 × 104-1.79 × 104 μg/g (sediment), and 9.46-19.12 mg/L (snowbank) and were highly related to nearby traffic conditions. Based on total EFs (34.4-288.5 mg/vKT) and airborne EFs (6.2-17.2 mg/vKT) calculated from the preceding concentrations, the TRWP emissions in Beijing were determined as 1.28 × 104 t/a. Among them, 61.3% was eventually disposed of in landfills owing to frequent road sweeping and high runoff treatment efficiency and 18.1% was stranded on the roadside; nevertheless, 11.9% escaped to freshwater systems and 5.7 and 3.0% airborne transported to remote land and ocean, respectively. This study provides new insights into the emissions and fate of TRWPs.

Abstract
Plastic pollution, a global threat to environmental and human health, is now ubiquitous in the environment, including agricultural soils receiving urban compost amendments. Yet, the accumulation pattern of microplastics in soils are still to be disentangled, with regards to their sources and/or their physical properties such as morphotypes. The aim of this study was to identify the accumulation patterns of coarse microplastics (CMP) resulting from the long-term amendment of soil with urban waste composts. To this end, we used a field experiment receiving three different urban composts derived from municipal solid waste, biowaste, and a mixture of sewage sludge and green waste. We isolated 1417 coarse microplastic particles from a 21-year archive of soil and compost samples, using density fractionation followed by oxidation, and used Py-GC/MS for polymer identification. Different compost types led to different coarse microplastics accumulation levels. The accumulation pattern showed increasing CMP contents in soils over time. After 21 years of experiment, the calculated number of CMP was in accordance with the estimated values for all three compost types but it was not the case for the CMP mass. No difference of evolution pattern was found between films and fragments. We proposed that biotic transport or abiotic weathering and fragmentation could explain such differences in CMP evolution pattern.

Abstract
This review offers a novel perspective on the environmental fate and ecotoxicological effects of tire wear particles (TWPs), ubiquitous environmental contaminants ranging in size from micrometers to millimeters (averaging 10-100 micrometers). These particles pose a growing threat due to their complex chemical composition and potential toxicity. Human exposure primarily occurs through inhalation, ingesting contaminated food and water, and dermal contact. Our review delves into the dynamic interplay between TWP composition, transformation products (TPs), and ecological impacts, highlighting the importance of considering both individual chemical effects and potential synergistic interactions. Notably, our investigation reveals that degradation products of certain chemicals, such as diphenylguanidine (DPG) and diphenylamine (DPA), can be more toxic than the parent compounds, underscoring the need to fully understand these contaminants' environmental profile. Furthermore, we explore the potential human health implications of TWPs, emphasizing the need for further research on potential respiratory, cardiovascular, and endocrine disturbances. Addressing the challenges in characterizing TWPs, assessing their environmental fate, and understanding their potential health risks requires a multidisciplinary approach. Future research should prioritize standardized TWP characterization and leachate analysis methods, conduct field studies to enhance ecological realism, and utilize advanced analytical techniques to decipher complex mixture interactions and identify key toxicants. By addressing these challenges, we can better mitigate the environmental and health risks associated with TWPs and ensure a more sustainable future.

Abstract
By 2040, tire particles (TP) are expected to dominate marine plastic contamination, raising concerns about their effects on marine animals. This study employed a multidisciplinary and multigenerational approach on the Pacific oyster Magallana gigas to investigate the effects of TP and their leachates (LEA). Effects were analyzed at the individual scale, from cellular, molecular, and microbiota changes to reproductive outputs and offspring performance. Microbiota characterization revealed potential dysbiosis in oysters treated with high concentration of both TP and LEA. RNA-seq analyses highlighted the activation of energy metabolism and stress responses in the LEA treatment. Additionally, transcriptional changes in oocytes and the reduction of motile spermatozoa suggested potential effects on gamete quality. Notably, possible oyster resilience was pointed out by the lack of significant ecophysiological modifications in adults and impacts on the growth and reproductive outputs of the offspring. Overall, the implications of the observed oyster resilience under our experimental setting are discussed in relation to available toxicity data and within a comprehensive view of coastal ecosystems, where a higher diversity of plastic/rubber materials and harsher environmental conditions occur.

Abstract
Tire microplastics (TMPs) and antibiotics are emerging pollutants that widely exist in water environments. The coexistence of these pollutants poses severe threats to aquatic organisms. However, the toxicity characteristics and key molecular factors of the combined exposure to TMPs in aquatic organisms remain unknown. Therefore, the joint toxicity of styrene-butadiene rubber TMPs (SBR-TMPs) and 32 antibiotics (macrolides, fluoroquinolones, β-lactams, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, nitroimidazoles, highly toxic antibiotics, high-content antibiotics, and common antibiotics) in zebrafish was investigated using a full factorial design, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulation. Sixty-four combinations of antibiotics were designed to investigate the hepatotoxicity of the coexistence of SBR-TMPs additives and antibiotics in zebrafish. Results indicated that low-order effects of antibiotics (e.g., enoxacin-lomefloxacin and ofloxacin-enoxacin-lomefloxacin) had relatively notable toxicity. The van der Waals interaction between additives and zebrafish cytochrome P450 enzymes primarily affected zebrafish hepatotoxicity. Zebrafish hepatotoxicity was also affected by the ability of SBR-TMPs to adsorb antibiotics, the relation between antibiotics, the affinity of antibiotics docking to zebrafish cytochrome P450 enzymes, electronegativity, atomic mass, and the hydrophobicity of the antibiotic molecules. This study aimed to eliminate the joint toxicity of TMPs and antibiotics and provide more environmentally friendly instructions for using different chemicals.

Abstract
Environmental contamination of microplastics (MPs) is ubiquitous worldwide, and co-contamination of arable soils with MPs and other pollutants is of increasing concern, and may lead to unexpected consequences on crop production. However, the overall implications of this combined effect, whether beneficial or detrimental, remain a subject of current debate. Here, we conducted a global meta and machine-learning analysis to evaluate the effects of co-exposure to MPs and other pollutants on crops, utilizing 3346 biological endpoints derived from 68 different studies. Overall, compared with control groups that only exposure to conventional soil contaminants, co-exposure significantly exacerbated toxicity to crops, particularly with MPs intensifying adverse effects on crop morphology, oxidative damage, and photosynthetic efficiency. Interestingly, our analysis demonstrated a significant reduction in the accumulation of pollutants in the crop due to the presence of MPs. In addition, the results revealed that potential adverse effects were primarily associated with crop species, MPs mass concentration, and exposure duration. Our study reaffirms the substantial consequences of MPs as emerging pollutants on crops within the context of integrated pollution, providing novel insights into improving sustainability in agro-ecosystems.

Abstract
Widespread use of plastics in consumer products, packaging, cosmetics, and industrial and agricultural production has resulted in the ubiquitous occurrence of microplastics in terrestrial environment. Compared to the marine environment, only limited studies have investigated the microplastics pollution and associated risk in terrestrial environment. The present review summarizes the global distribution of microplastics in terrestrial environment, their transport pathways and fate, risk to ecosystem and human health, and abatement strategies. Small particle sizes (<500 μm); fragment, fiber, and film shapes; transparent and white color; polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) polymers were the major characteristics of the microplastics found in terrestrial environment. Microplastics in soils negatively affect soil organisms, while the impact of microplastics in terrestrial environment on human health is poorly understood, which needs to be explored further as there is clear evidence on their presence in human bodies. The removal of microplastics from soil environment is quite complex and costly, thus prevention of their releases is preferable. Among the existing abatement options, biodegradation, which harnesses bacterial strains to degrade microplastics through enzymatic hydrolysis, hold promise for terrestrial environment. Strengthening global cooperation, implementing timely policies on plastic use and recycle, and developing new technologies for control of microplastics are recommended to reduce the pollution in terrestrial environment. Global effort on reducing plastic wastes and enhancing their management is imperative, while substitution with biodegradable plastics could help minimize future accumulation of microplastics in terrestrial environment.

Abstract
The presence of tyre and road wear particles (TRWP) in the environment is an underestimated threat due to their potential impact on ecosystems and human health. However, their mode of action and potential impacts on aquatic ecosystems remain largely unknown. In the present study, we adopted a sediment exposure scenario to investigate the influence of sediment coming from an urban runoff sedimentation basin on the life cycle of Chironomus riparius. Targeted broad-spectrum chemical analysis helped to characterise the urban sediments and confirmed the significant contribution of contaminants from traffic (e.g. tyre wear contribution, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons [PAHs], metals, tyre rubber additives). First-stage chironomid larvae were subjected to increasing concentrations of urban whole sediment. The results showed that exposure to this urban sediment influenced all measured endpoints. In vivo quantification of ROS showed that larvae exposed to the lowest concentration of contaminated sediment exhibited increased fluorescence. The contaminated sediment conditions increased mortality by almost 30 %, but this effect was surprisingly not concentration-dependent. Fertility decreased significantly and concentration-dependently. The results of the Mean Emergence Time (EmT50) and larval size showed an optimality curve. Furthermore, as a consequence of the effects on fitness, the Population Growth Rate (PGR) exhibited a significant decrease, which was concentration-dependent. Therefore, after a single generation, PGR calculation can be adopted as a sensitive tool to monitor pollution caused by complex matrices, i.e. composed of several contaminants. Our research highlights the importance of effective management of road runoff and underlines the need for further investigation to better understand the toxicity of TRWPs.

Abstract
Rapid urbanization brought lots of serious environmental contamination, including the accumulation of heavy metals, acid rain, and the emission of tire wear particles (TWPs), with detrimental effects for terrestrial ecosystems. Nevertheless, how naturally aged TWPs affect the mobilization of heavy metals in soils under acid rain is still unclear. Here, we investigate the adsorption and transport mechanisms of Pb(II) co-existing with acid rainwater in soil-TWP mixtures via batch experiments, column experiments and modeling. Results showed that photoaged TWP significantly prolonged the Pb(II) adsorption equilibrium time (1 to 16 h) and enhanced the Pb(II) adsorption capacity of soils. Soil column profiles confirmed that TWP effectively boosted the initial accumulation of lead in the topsoil and thus impeded the downward transport of lead. The retardation factor (R) estimated by the linear two-site sorption model (TSM) fitting the Pb(II) breakthrough curves gradually increased from 1.098 to 16.38 in soils with TWP (0-10 %). Comparative results of linear or nonlinear TSM suggested nonlinear sorption replacing linear sorption as the main Pb(II) sorption mechanism under 1 % and 10 % TWP. This research provides significant insights into the implications of TWP on the Pb(II) retention behaviors and highlights the severer potential remobilization risks of Pb(II) in urban soils under different acid rain environments.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWPs) pollution is widely present in soil, especially in areas severely affected by traffic. Herein, regular variation of fungal biomass with TWPs was found in soils with different distances from the highway. In addition, the concentrations of benzothiazole compounds (BTHs), an important class of rubber vulcanization accelerators, were found to be positively correlated to the TWPs abundance. Sixty days' soil microcosm experiments were conducted to further confirm the adverse effect of TWPs and BTHs on soil fungi. TWPs spiking at 1000 mg/kg, a detectable level in the roadside, resulted in significant reduction of biomass and significant changes of soil fungal community structure, with Eurotium and Polyporales being the sensitive species. BTH+ 2-hydroxybenzothiazole (OHBT) (the dominant BTHs in soil) spiking at 200 ng/kg, the dose equivalent to 1000 mg/kg TWPs pollution, also caused a similar magnitude of soil fungal biomass reduction. Adonis demonstrated no significant difference of fungal community structure between TWPs and BTH+OHBT spiked soil, suggesting the adverse effect of TWPs on soil fungi may be explained by the act of BTHs. Pure culture using the representative soil fungi Eurotium and Polyporales also confirmed that BTHs were the main contributors to the adverse effect of TWPs on soil fungi.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWP) represent a distinctive form of microplastics (MPs) that are widely distributed in aquatic ecosystems. However, the toxicity of various types of TWP on phytoplankton remain to be further explored. Thus, three different TWPs originating from replaced bicycle, car, and electro-mobile tire (marked as BTWP, CTWP, and ETWP) were selected and their long-term biological influences on Chlorella vulgaris were investigated. Results demonstrated TWPs showed a concentration-dependent growth promotion of Chlorella vulgaris, with a maximum promotion rate reached to 40.51 % (10 mg/L, 10 d), 23.5 % (80 mg/L, 12 d), and 28.7 % (20 mg/L, 12 d) in the presence of BTWP, CTWP and ETWP, respectively. Meanwhile, TWPs could stimulate the secretion of EPS and induce oxidative stress. EPS analysis revealed the increase of polysaccharides could protect the cell from the direct contact with TWP particles. Moreover, the increased concentration of EPS also helps to induce the settlement of TWP and reduce the leachate release. The release of TWP into the environment could act as an accelerator for the growth of Chlorella vulgaris, which might further change the normal physicochemical behaviors of algae colony in aquatic system. Our findings provide new insights into the toxicity mechanism of TWPs on freshwater algae and valuable data on environmental risk assessment of TWPs.

Abstract
A comparative study explored how photoaging, ozonation aging, and Fenton aging affect tire wear particles (TWPs) and their phosphorus (P) removal in activated sludge. Aging altered TWPs' properties, increasing surface roughness, porosity, and generating more small particles, especially environmental persistent free radicals (EPFRs) in ozonation and Fenton aging. Post-aging TWPs (50 mg/L) inhibited sludge P removal significantly (p < 0.05), with rates of 44.3% and 59.6% for ozonation and Fenton aging, respectively. In addition, the metabolites involved in P cycling (poly-β-hydroxyalkanoates: PHA and glycogen) and essential enzymes (Exopolyphosphatase: PPX and Polyphosphate kinase: PPK) were significantly inhibited (p < 0.05). Moreover, TWPs led to a decrease in microbial cells within the sludge and altered the community structure, a situation exacerbated by the aging of TWPs. P-removing bacteria decreased (e.g., Burkholderia, Candidatus), while extracellular polymeric substance-secreting bacteria increased (e.g., Pseudomonas, Novosphingobium). Pearson correlation analysis highlighted EPFRs' role in TWPs' acute toxicity to microbial cells, yet, emphasizing particle size's impact on the sludge system's purification and community structure.

Abstract
While tire wear particles (TWP) have been estimated to represent more than 90% of the total microplastic (MP) emitted in European countries and may have environmental health effects, only few data about TWP concentrations and characteristics are available today. The lack of data stems from the fact that no standardized, cost efficient or accessible extraction and identification method is available yet. We present a method allowing the extraction of TWP from soil, performing analysis with a conventional optical microscope and a machine learning approach to identify TWP in soil based on their colour. The lowest size of TWP which could be measured reliably with an acceptable recovery using our experimental set-up was 35 µm. Further improvements would be possible given more advanced technical infrastructure (higher optical magnification and image quality). Our method showed a mean recovery of 85% in the 35-2000 µm particle size range and no blank contamination. We tested for possible interference from charcoal (as another black soil component with similar properties) in the soils and found a reduction of the interference from charcoal by 92% during extraction. We applied our method to a highway adjacent soil at 1 m, 2 m, 5 m, and 10 m and detected TWP in all samples with a tendency to higher concentrations at 1 m and 2 m from the road compared to 10 m from the road. The observed TWP concentrations were in the same order of magnitude as what was previously reported in literature in highway adjacent soils. These results demonstrate the potential of the method to provide quantitative data on the occurrence and characteristics of TWP in the environment. The method can be easily implemented in many labs, and help to address our knowledge gap regarding TWP concentrations in soils. Abstract
Tire wear particles are an increasing issue in particle emissions to the environment. Germany-wide approximately 100,000 t tire wear particles are emitted every year into the environment which are estimated to be one third of the microplastic emissions. Up to 20% are estimated to reach inland surface waters. Their behavior in the aquatic environment is understudied. Tire wear particles have an overly hydrophobic surface that is capable of adsorbing substances like trace elements. In this study we investigated the adsorption and desorption of trace metals onto and from the particle surface of tire-related samples in water samples of the Freiberger Mulde, a river with naturally elevated concentration of trace elements. The priority trace metals Cr, Ni, Zn, Cd and Pb show a significant adsorption onto the particle surface of tire-related samples. Tire wear particles themselves revealed adsorption of mainly Ni, Cd and Pb. Regarding the German classification for suspended matter in freshwaters, an endangering of the chemical water quality is expected due to the adsorption process and not due to the particles themselves. Upcoming electromobility is expected to increase the Zn (increased tire abrasion) and decrease the Cu amount (reduced brake abrasion) released to freshwaters.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWPs), common mixed particulate emerging contaminants in the environment, have global per capita emissions accounting for 0.23-1.9 kg/year, attracting global attention recently due to their wide detection, small size, mobility, and high toxicity. This review focuses on the occurrence characteristics of TWPs in multiple environmental media, adverse effects on organisms, potential toxicity mechanisms, and environmental risk prevention and control strategies of TWPs. The environmental fate of TWPs throughout the entire process is systematically investigated by the bibliometric analysis function of CiteSpace. This review supplements the gap in the joint toxicity and related toxicity mechanisms of TWPs with other environmental pollutants. Based on the risks review of TWPs and their additives, adverse impacts have been found in organisms from aquatic environments, soil, and humans, such as the growth inhibition effect on Chironomus dilutes. A multi-faceted and rationalized prevention and control treatment of "source-process-end" for the whole process can be achieved by regulating the use of studded tires, improving the tire additive formula, growing plants roadside, encouraging micro-degradation, and other methods, which are first reviewed. By addressing the current knowledge gaps and exploring prospects, this study contributes to developing strategies for reducing risks and assessing the fate of TWPs in multiple environmental media.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWPs) are considered an important component of microplastic pollution in the marine environment and occur together with a variety of aquatic pollutants, including frequently detected bisphenols. The adverse effects of TWPs or bisphenols on aquatic organisms have been widely reported. However, the combined toxicity of TWPs and bisphenols is still unknown. In this study, the combined toxicity of both pristine (p-) and aged TWPs (a-TWPs) and four bisphenols ((bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol S (BPS), and bisphenol AF (BPAF)) to Tigriopus japonicus was evaluated. TWPs increased the toxicity of BPA and BPF but decreased the toxicity of BPAF. For BPS, there was synergistic toxic effect in the presence of p-TWPs, but slightly antagonistic effect was observed in the presence of a-TWPs. This adsorption of BPAF by TWPs resulted in a reduction of its toxicity to the copepod. A-TWPs could release more Zn than p-TWPs, and the released Zn contributed to the synergistic effect of TWPs and BPA or BPF. The aggregation formed by TWPs in certain sizes (e.g., 90-110 μm) could cause intestinal damage and lipid peroxidation in T. japonicus. The synergistic effect of p-TWPs and BPS might be due to the aggregation size of the binary mixture. The results of the current study will be important to understand the combined toxic effect of TWPs and bisphenols and the potential toxic mechanisms of the binary mixture.

Abstract
With the continuous development of the modern social economy, rubber has been widely used in our daily life. Tire and road wear particles (TRWPs) are generated by friction between tires and the road surface during the processes of driving, acceleration, and braking. TRWPs can be divided into three main components according to their source: tire tread, brake wear, and road wear. Due to urban runoff, TRWPs flow with rainwater into the aquatic environment and influence the surrounding aquatic organisms. As an emerging contaminant, TRWPs with the characteristics of small particles and strong toxicity have been given more attention recently. Here, we summarized the existing knowledge of the physical and chemical properties of TRWPs, the pathways of TRWPs into the water body, and the exposure routes of TRWPs. Furthermore, we introduced the biological effects of TRWPs involved in size, concentration, and shape, as well as key toxic compounds involved in heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD), and benzothiazole on aquatic organisms, and attempted to find the relevant factors influencing the toxic effects of TRWPs. In the context of existing policies that ignore pollution from TRWPs emissions in the aquatic environment, we also proposed measures to mitigate the impact of TRWPs in the future, as well as an outlook for TRWPs research.

Abstract
Million tons of tires become waste every year, and the so-called End-of-Life Tires (ELTs) are ground into powder (ELT-dp; size < 0.8 mm) and granules (ELT-dg; 0.8 < size < 2.5 mm) for recycling. The aim of this study was to evaluate the sub-lethal effects of three different concentrations (0.1, 1, and 10 mg/L) of aqueous suspensions from ELT-dp and ELT-dg on Danio rerio (zebrafish) larvae exposed from 0 to 120 h post-fertilization (hpf). Chronic effects were assessed through biomarkers, real-time PCR, and proteomics. We observed a significant increase in swimming behavior and heart rate only in specimens exposed to ELT-dp suspensions at 1 and 10 mg/L, respectively. Conversely, the activities of detoxifying enzymes ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase (EROD) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) showed significant modulation only in specimens exposed to ELT-dg groups. Although no effects were observed through real-time PCR, proteomics highlighted alterations induced by the three ELT-dp concentrations in over 100 proteins involved in metabolic pathways of aromatic and nitrogen compounds. The results obtained suggest that the toxic mechanism of action (MoA) of ELT suspensions is mainly associated with the induction of effects by released chemicals in water, with a higher toxicity of ELT-dp compared to ELT-dg.

Abstract
To enhance tire durability, the antioxidant N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) is used in rubber, but it converts into the toxic 6PPD quinone (6PPD-Q) when exposed to oxidants like ozone (O3), causing ecological concerns. This review synthesizes the existing data to assess the transformation, bioavailability, and potential hazards of two tire-derived pollutants 6PPD and 6PPD-Q. The comparative analysis of different thermal methods utilized in repurposing waste materials like tires and plastics into valuable products are analyzed. These methods shed light on the aspects of pyrolysis and catalytic conversion processes, providing valuable perspectives into optimizing the waste valorization and mitigating environmental impacts. Furthermore, we have examined the bioavailability and potential hazards of chemicals used in tire manufacturing, based on the literature included in this review. The bioavailability of these chemicals, particularly the transformation of 6PPD to 6PPD-Q, poses significant ecological risks. 6PPD-Q is highly bioavailable in aquatic environments, indicating its potential for widespread ecological harm. The persistence and mobility of 6PPD-Q in the environment, along with its toxicological effects, highlight the critical need for ongoing monitoring and the development of effective mitigation strategies to reduce its impact on both human health and ecosystem. Future research should focus on understanding the chronic effects of low-level exposure to these compounds on both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, as well as the potential for bioaccumulation in the food chain. Additionally, this review outlines the knowledge gaps, recommending further research into the toxicity of tire-derived pollutants in organisms and the health implications for humans and ecosystems.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWPs) are considered a significant contributor of microplastics (MPs) in the sludge during heavy rainfall events. Numerous studies have shown that hydrothermal treatment (HT) of sludge can accelerate the leaching of MP-derived compound into hydrothermal liquid, thus impairing the performance of subsequent anaerobic digestion and the quality of the hydrothermal liquid fertilizer. However, the leaching behavior of TWPs in the HT of sludge remains inadequately explored. This study examined the molecular composition of TWP-derived compounds and transformation pathways of representative tire-related additives under different hydrothermal temperatures using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) combined with mass difference analysis. The acute toxicity and phytotoxicity of TWP leachates were assessed using Vibrio qinghaiensis Q67 and rice hydroponics experiments. The results indicated that elevating the hydrothermal temperature not only amplified the leaching behavior of TWPs but also enhanced the chemical complexity of the TWP leachate. Utilizing both suspect and non-target screenings, a total of 144 compounds were identified as additives, including N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6-PDD), hexa(methoxymethyl)melamine (HMMM), dibutyl phthalate (DBP). These additives underwent various reactions, such as desaturation, acetylation, and other reactions, leading to the formation of different transformation products (TPs). Moreover, certain additives, including caprolactam and 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinol, demonstrated the potential to form conjugate products with amino acids or Maillard products. Meanwhile, TWP-derived compounds showed significant acute toxicity and detrimental effects on plant growth. This study systematically investigated the environmental fate of TWPs and their derived compounds during the HT of sludge, offering novel insights into the intricate interactions between the micropollutants and dissolved organic matter (DOM) in sludge.

Abstract
Urban clusters are recognized as hotspots of microplastic pollution, and the associated urban rivers convey microplastics into the global oceans. Despite this knowledge, the relative contributions of various sources to the annual microplastic emissions from urban catchments remain scarcely quantified. Here, we quantified microplastic emissions from a riverine urban catchment in Japan. The total microplastics (size range: 10-5000 μm) released from the catchment amounted to 269.1 tons/annum, of which 78.1% is contributed by surface runoff and other uncontrolled emissions (UCE), and 21.1% emerges from the regulated wastewater (controlled emissions; CE), implying that approximately one-fifth is intercepted and removed by the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This further indicated higher microplastic pollution by unmanaged surface runoff compared to untreated wastewater. In the dry season, WWTPs contributed significantly to the reduction of total microplastic emissions (95%) compared to wet periods (8%). On an annual scale, the treated effluent occupies only 0.1% of the total microplastics released to the river network (212.4 tons/annum), while the remaining portion is dominated by UCE, i.e., primarily surface runoff emissions (98.9%), and trivially by the background microplastic inputs that are potentially derived through atmospheric depositions in dry days (1.0%). It was shown that moderate and heavy rainfall events which occur during 18% of the year (within the context of Japan), leading to 95% of the annual microplastic emissions, are crucial for pollution control of urban rivers. Furthermore, our study demonstrated that surface area-normalized microplastic emissions from an urban catchment (∼0.8 tons/km2/annum) is globally relevant, especially for planning microplastic interventions for developed cities.

Abstract
About 3 billion new tires are produced each year and about 800 million tires become waste annually. Global dependence upon tires produced from natural rubber and petroleum-based compounds represents a persistent and complex environmental problem with only partial and often-times, ineffective solutions. Tire emissions may be in the form of whole tires, tire particles, and chemical compounds, each of which is transported through various atmospheric, terrestrial, and aquatic routes in the natural and built environments. Production and use of tires generates multiple heavy metals, plastics, PAH's, and other compounds that can be toxic alone or as chemical cocktails. Used tires require storage space, are energy intensive to recycle, and generally have few post-wear uses that are not also potential sources of pollutants (e.g., crumb rubber, pavements, burning). Tire particles emitted during use are a major component of microplastics in urban runoff and a source of unique and highly potent toxic substances. Thus, tires represent a ubiquitous and complex pollutant that requires a comprehensive examination to develop effective management and remediation. We approach the issue of tire pollution holistically by examining the life cycle of tires across production, emissions, recycling, and disposal. In this paper, we synthesize recent research and data about the environmental and human health risks associated with the production, use, and disposal of tires and discuss gaps in our knowledge about fate and transport, as well as the toxicology of tire particles and chemical leachates. We examine potential management and remediation approaches for addressing exposure risks across the life cycle of tires. We consider tires as pollutants across three levels: tires in their whole state, as particulates, and as a mixture of chemical cocktails. Finally, we discuss information gaps in our understanding of tires as a pollutant and outline key questions to improve our knowledge and ability to manage and remediate tire pollution.

Abstract
Soil and terrestrial contamination with microplastics and nanoplastics has been discussed extensively, while tire wear particles (TWPs) have been largely overlooked. We investigated the root-surface interactions and growth response of mung bean (Vigna radiata L.) plants exposed to tire wear particles (TWPs) (0.05, 0.1, and 0.25% w/w) and nickel sulfate (50 and 100 mg kg-1 NiSO4) alone and in co-exposure scenarios for the full life cycle (105 days) under soil conditions. The results show that TWPs adhered to the root surface and reduced the water and nutrient uptake by the plant, particularly at higher concentrations of TWPs (0.25% w/w), without any observed organic contaminant accumulation in the root tissue. TWPs alone at 0.01, 0.1, and 0.25% (w/w) decreased mung bean yield by 11, 28, and 52%, respectively. Co-exposure to TWPs at 0.01, 0.1 and 0.25% w/w with 100 mg kg-1 NiSO4 decreased yield by 73, 79 and 88%, respectively. However, co-exposure to TWPs at 0.01 and 0.1% w/w with 50 mg kg-1 NiSO4 enhanced the yield by 32% and 7%, respectively. These changes in yield and nutritional aspects appear to be linked to Ni's regulatory influence on mineral homeostasis. Moreover, exposure to NiSO4 at 100 mg kg-1 increased Ni uptake in the root, shoot, and grain by 9, 26, and 20-fold, respectively as compared to the unamended control; this corresponded to increased antioxidant enzyme activity (10-127%) as compared to the control. TWPs caused blockages, significantly reducing plant yield and altering nutrient dynamics, highlighting emerging risks to plant health.

Abstract
Environmental pollution with plastic polymers has become a global problem, leaving no continent and habitat unaffected. Plastic waste is broken down into smaller parts by environmental factors, which generate micro- and nanoplastic particles (MNPPs), ultimately ending up in the human food chain. Before entering the human body, MNPPs make their first contact with saliva in the human mouth. However, it is unknown what proteins attach to plastic particles and whether such protein corona formation is affected by the particle's biophysical properties. To this end, we employed polystyrene MNPPs of two different sizes and three different charges and incubated them individually with saliva donated by healthy human volunteers. Particle zeta potential and size analyses were performed using dynamic light scattering complemented by nanoliquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (nLC/HRMS) to qualitatively and quantitatively reveal the protein soft and hard corona for each particle type. Notably, protein profiles and relative quantities were dictated by plastic particle size and charge, which in turn affected their hydrodynamic size, polydispersity, and zeta potential. Strikingly, we provide evidence of the latter to be dynamic processes depending on exposure times. Smaller particles seemed to be more reactive with the surrounding proteins, and cultures of the particles with five different cell lines (HeLa, HEK293, A549, HepG2, and HaCaT) indicated protein corona effects on cellular metabolic activity and genotoxicity. In summary, our data suggest nanoplastic size and surface chemistry dictate the decoration by human saliva proteins, with important implications for MNPP uptake in humans.

Abstract
Styrene butadiene rubber is one of the main constituents of tire tread. During tire life, the tread material undergoes different stresses that impact its structure and chemical composition. Wear particles are then released into the environment as weathered material. To understand their fate, it is important to start with a better characterization of abiotic and biotic degradation of the elastomer material. A multi-disciplinary approach was implemented to study the photo- and thermo- degradation of non-vulcanized SBR films containing 15 w% styrene as well as their potential biodegradation by Rhodoccocus ruber and Gordonia polyisoprenivorans bacterial strains. Each ageing process leads to crosslinking reactions, much surface oxidation of the films and the production of hundreds of short chain compounds. These degradation products present a high level of unsaturation and oxidation and can be released into water to become potential substrates for microorganisms. Both strains were able to degrade from 0.2 to 1.2 % (% ThOD) of the aged SBR film after 30-day incubation while no biodegradation was observed on the pristine material. A 25-75 % decrease in the signal intensity of water extractable compounds was observed, suggesting that biomass production was linked to the consumption of low-molecular-weight degradation products. These results evidence the positive impact of abiotic degradation on the biodegradation process of styrene butadiene rubber.

Abstract
The use of vehicle tires has been identified as a major source of microplastics in the environment and an increasing source of urban particulate air pollution. In light of increasing traffic volumes, increasingly heavier and more powerful vehicles due to trends and electrification, and the lack of tire wear regulation, methods to estimate and monitor changes in national emissions are needed as input for environmental impact assessments. Emission estimations of tire wear are made either based on the mileage approach or the sales approach. This study aims to investigate if and how the mileage approach can be improved by using emission factors for passenger cars and LDVs based on our own measurements and emission factors from the literature for HDVs and buses. An approach with emission factor adjustments based on weight and number of tires in combination with highly detailed mileage data has been evaluated. Sales approach calculations have been used to validate the method. A secondary aim was to use the new mileage approach framework to calculate the national tire wear emissions for Sweden. These calculations resulted in slightly lower total emissions than previous estimations provide, but with higher emissions for passenger cars and light-duty vehicles, and lower emissions for heavy-duty vehicles and motorcycles. Passenger cars constitute more than half of the total emissions. It is concluded that even though the framework offers greater detail, thus increasing the possibilities to adjust for changes in emission factors and mileages in specific vehicle categories, the challenges posed by such factors as the lack of measured emission factors for heavy-duty vehicles and uncertainties regarding the quality of mileage statistics makes the estimations uncertain. Important future suggestions for research include establishing reliable emission factors, especially for heavy-duty vehicles, and initiating research to better understand how climate, road networks, surface properties, and vehicle fleet characteristics affect emission factors.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWPs) have caused increasing concerns due to their detrimental effects on the soil ecosystem. However, the role of weathering in altering the toxicity of TWP to soil organisms is poorly understood. In this study, the toxicity of original and photoaged TWP was compared using earthworms (Eisenia fetida) as soil model organisms. The obtained results indicated that photoaging of TWP resulted in an increase of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) from 3.69 × 1017 to 5.20 × 1017 spin/g. Meanwhile, photoaged TWP induced the changes of toxic endpoint in E. fetide, i.e., the increase of the weight loss and death ratio from 0.0425 to 0.0756 g/worm and 23.3 to 50% compared to original TWP under a 10% concentration, respectively. Analyses of transcriptomics, antioxidant enzyme activity, and histopathology demonstrated that the enhanced toxicity was mainly due to oxidative damage, which was induced by disruption in the antioxidant defense system. Free-radical quenching and correlation analysis further suggested that the excessive production of ex vivo reactive oxygen species, induced by EPFRs, led to the exhaustion of the antioxidant defense system. Overall, this work provides new insights into the potential hazard of the weathered TWP in a soil environment and has significant implications for the recycling and proper disposal of spent tire particles.

Abstract
Stormwater represent a critical pathway for transporting microplastics (MPs) to surface waters. Due to complex dynamics of MPs in stormwater, its dispersion, weathering, risk, and transport are poorly understood. This review bridges those gaps by summarizing the latest findings on sources, abundance, characteristics, and dynamics involved in stormwater MP pollution. Weathering starts before or after MPs enter stormwater and is more pronounced on land due to continuous heat and mechanical stress. Land use patterns, rainfall intensity, MPs size and density, and drainage characteristics influence the transport of MPs in stormwater. Tire and road wear particles (TRWPs), littering, and road dust are major sources of MPs in stormwater. The concentrations of MPs varies from 0.38-197,000 particles/L globally. Further MP concentrations showed regional variations, highlighting the importance of local monitoring efforts needed to understand local pollution sources. We observed unique signatures associated with the shape and color of MPs. Fibers and fragments were widely reported, with transparent and black being the predominant colors. We conclude that the contribution of stormwater to MP pollution in surface waters is significantly greater than wastewater treatment plant effluents and demands immediate attention. Field and lab scale studies are needed to understand its behavior in stormwater and the risk posed to the downstream water bodies.

Abstract
Tire materials (TMs) present a notable hazard due to their potential to release harmful chemicals and microplastics into the environment. They can infiltrate wastewater treatment plants, where their effects remain inadequately understood, raising concerns regarding their influence on treatment procedures. Thus, this study investigated the impact of TMs in wastewater (10, 25, 50 mg/L) on wastewater treatment efficiency, biomass morphology, and microbial composition in aerobic granular sludge (AGS) reactors. TM dosage negatively correlated with nitrification and denitrification efficiencies, reducing overall nitrogen removal, but did not affect the efficiency of chemical-oxygen-demand removal. The presence of TMs increased the diameter of the granules due to TM incorporation into the biomass. The most frequently leached additives from TMs were N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-1,4-phenylenediamine, benzothiazole (BTH), and 2-hydroxybenzothiazole. In the treated wastewater, only BTH and aniline were detected in higher concentrations, which indicates that tire additives were biodegraded by AGS. The microbial community within the AGS adapted to TMs and their chemicals, highlighting the potential for efficient degradation of tire additives by bacteria belonging to the genera Rubrivivax, Ferruginibacter, and Xanthomonas. Additionally, our research underscores AGS's ability to incorporate TMs into biomass and effectively biodegrade tire additives, offering a promising solution for addressing environmental concerns related to TMs.

Abstract
Soil is the source and sink of microplastics (MPs), which is more polluted than water and air. In this paper, the pollution levels of MPs in the agriculture, roadside, urban and landfill soils were reviewed, and the influence of MPs on soil ecosystem, including soil properties, microorganisms, animals and plants, was discussed. According to the results of in vivo and in vitro experiments, the possible risks of MPs to soil ecosystem and human health were predicted. Finally, in light of the current status of MPs research, several prospects are provided for future research directions to better evaluate the ecological risk and human health risk of MPs. MPs concentrations in global agricultural soils, roadside soils, urban soils and landfill soils had a great variance in different studies and locations. The participation of MPs has an impact on all aspects of terrestrial ecosystems. For soil properties, pH value, bulk density, pore space and evapotranspiration can be changed by MPs. For microorganisms, MPs can alter the diversity and abundance of microbiome, and different MPs have different effects on bacteria and fungi differently. For plants, MPs may interfere with their biochemical and physiological conditions and produce a wide range of toxic effects, such as inhibiting plant growth, delaying or reducing seed germination, reducing biological and fruit yield, and interfering with photosynthesis. For soil animals, MPs can affect their mobility, growth rate and reproductive capacity. At present epidemiological evidences regarding MPs exposure and negative human health effects are unavailable, but in vitro and in vivo data suggest that they pose various threats to human health, including respiratory system, digestive system, urinary system, endocrine system, nervous system, and circulation system. In conclusion, the existence and danger of MPs cannot be ignored and requires a global effort.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWPs) are garnering increasing attention due to their potential adverse environmental impacts. However, precisely ascertaining TWPs content is challenging due to the complexity and variability of the tire components used in the environment, indicating that more reliable methods to accurately determine TWPs are necessary. In this study, driving school grounds were used as a case study to ascertain an appropriate and reliable method to determine TWPs levels based on a comprehensive comparison between different analytical results using styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD), and zinc (Zn) as analytical markers. Thermogravimetric analysis-Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TGA-GC-MS) method reliability using SBR was verified and applied to measure TWPs levels on driving school grounds. By reliably converting SBR content to TWPs content, the average TWPs content on driving school grounds was measured at 190.13 ± 101.89 mg/g. The highest TWPs content was 281.83 ± 171.44 mg/g under the reverse stall parking driving programs, while the slope start and stop driving programs was lower at 208.36 ± 124.11 mg/g. Our findings highlight the importance of accurately determining TWPs content within specific environments while comprehensively exploring associated patterns of change to better understand the environmental risks of TWPs.

Abstract
Polyethylene (PE) microplastics are emerging pollutants that pose a significant threat to the environment and human health. However, little is known about the effects of PEs on soil‒plant interactions, especially in heavy metal (HM)-contaminated soil. In this study, the effects of PE on rhizosphere soil enzyme activities, microbial interactions and nutrient cycling processes were analyzed from ecological network and functional gene perspectives for the first time. The results indicated that PE-MP addition significantly reduced the biomass of Bidens pilosa L. In addition, the partial increase in carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus enzyme activities suggested that the effects of PE as a carbon source on microbial functions in HM-contaminated soil should not be ignored. The average path length of bacterial network nodes was found to be higher than that of fungal network nodes, demonstrating that the bacterial ecological network in PE-MP and HM cocontaminated environments has good buffering capacity against changes in external environmental conditions. Furthermore, structural equation modeling demonstrated that particle size and dosage affect soil nutrient cycling processes and that cycling processes are acutely aware of changes in any factor, such as soil moisture, soil pH and soil nitrogen nutrients. Hence, PE-MP addition in HM-contaminated soil has the potential to alter soil ecological functions and nutrient cycles.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWPs) are a major source of environmental microplastic pollution which gradually settle and accumulate in sediments after entering the aquatic environment, which can affect the behaviors of benthic organisms. Bioturbation of benthic species could affect the fate, impacts and potential risks of TWPs by altering the properties and structure of sediments. Therefore, in this study, the effect of TWPs on the burrowing activity of Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) was investigated. In addition, the effects of crab bioturbation on the distribution of TWPs and their additives were studied. The combined effects of TWPs and crab bioturbation on the microbial communities in the sediments were also explored. The results of this study showed that both TWPs and the leachate significantly inhibited the burrowing activity of crabs. TWPs in the surface layer of sediments were re-distributed by crab bioturbation and enriched mainly in the sediments near the burrow walls. Meanwhile, the heavy metals (i.e., Zn, Ca, Mg, Ba and Al) used as additives during the tire production in the burrow walls significantly increased as the accumulation of TWPs near burrow walls. In this study, TWP exposure decreased the bacterial diversity and abundance, as well as the functional genes related to carbon and nitrogen cycling process, but crab bioturbation increased them in the sediments of burrow walls by constructing a unique habitat. However, after TWPs entering into burrows, they were significantly decreased in the sediments near the burrow walls like the effects of TWPs, suggesting the negative effects of TWPs could play a dominant role in this combined system. Overall, this study is important for evaluating the distribution and effects of TWP pollution in the sediment ecosystem under biological factors such as bioturbation.

Abstract
With the increasing use of plastics, nano- and micro-plastic (NMP) pollution has become a hot topic in the scientific community. Ubiquitous NMPs, as emerging contaminants, are becoming a global issue owing to their persistence and potential toxicity. Compared with studies of marine and freshwater environments, investigations into the sources, transport properties, and fate of NMPs in soil and groundwater environments remain at a primary stage. Hence, the promotion of such research is critically important. Here, we integrate existing information and recent advancements to compile a comprehensive evaluation of the sources and transport properties of NMPs in soil and groundwater environments. We first provide a systematic description of the various sources and transport behaviors of NMPs. We then discuss the theories (e.g., clean-bed filtration and Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theories) and models (e.g., single-site and dual-site kinetic retention and transport models) of NMP transport through saturated porous media. Finally, we outline the potential limitations of current research and suggest directions for future research. Overall, this review intends to assimilate and outline current knowledge and provide a useful reference frame to determine the sources and transport properties of NMPs in soil and groundwater environments.

Abstract
Roadway particles (RP) that can be collected with on-vehicle system, consist of a mixture of Tire and road wear particles (TRWP) with other traffic-derived particles (exhaust or non-exhaust) and/or biogenic compounds and represent a significant source of xenobiotics, susceptible to reach the different environmental compartments. The study of the RP fate is thus a major challenge to tackle in order to understand their degradation and impact. They offer a variety of carbon sources potentially usable by microorganisms, ranging from the tire-derived plasticizers, vulcanizing agents, protective agents and their transformation products, to other traffic, road and environmental-derived contaminants. A multi-analytical approach was implemented to characterize RP and study their biodegradation. Kinetics of RP extractions were monitored during 21 days in water, methanol, acetone and chloroform to identify leaching and extractable compounds and monitor the particle composition. The results confirmed that hundreds of readily leachable chemicals can be extracted from RP directly into water according to a dynamic process with time while additional poorly soluble compounds remain in the particles. Mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS and GC-MS) allowed us to propose 296 putative compounds using an extensive rubber database. The capacity of 6 bacterial strains, belonging to Rhodococcus, Pseudomonas and Streptomyces genera, to biodegrade RP was then evaluated over 14 days of incubation. The selected strains were able to grow on RP using various substrates. Elastomer monitoring by 1H NMR revealed a significant 12 % decrease of the extractable SBR fraction when the particles were incubated with Rhodococcus ruber. After incubation, the biodegradation of 171 compounds among leachable and extractable compounds was evaluated. Fatty acids and alkanes from rubber plasticizers and paraffin waxes were the most degraded putative compounds by the six strains tested, reaching 75 % of biodegradation for some of them.

Abstract
The rise of plasticulture as mulching material in farming systems has raised concerns about microplastics (MPs) in the agricultural landscape. MPs are emerging pollutants in croplands and water systems with significant ecological risks, particularly over the long term. In the soil systems, MPs polymer type, thinness, shape, and size induces numerous effects on soil aggregates, dissolved organic carbon (C), rapidly oxidized organic C, microbial biomass C, microbial biomass nitrogen (N), microbial immobilization, degradation of organic matter, N cycling, and production of greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), thereby posing a significant risk of impairing soil physical and biochemical properties over time. Further, toxic chemicals released from polyethylene mulching (PMs) might indirectly harm plant growth by affecting soil wetting-drying cycles, releasing toxic substances that interact with soil matrix, and suppressing soil microbial activity. In the environment, accumulation of MPs poses a risk to human health by accelerating emissions of GHGs, e.g., methane and carbon dioxide, or directly releasing toxic substances such as phthalic acid esters (PAEs) into the soils. Also, larger sizes MPs can adhere to root surface and block stomata could significantly change the shape of root epidermal cells resulting in arrest plant growth and development by restricting water-nutrient uptake, and gene expression and altering the biodiversity of the soil pollutants. In this review, we systematically analyzed the potential risks of MPs to the soil-plant and human body, their occurrence, abundance, and migration in agroecosystems. Further, the impacts of MPs on soil microbial function, nutrient cycling, soil C, and GHGs are mechanistically reviewed, with emphasis on potential green solutions such as organic materials amendments along with future research directions for more eco-friendly and sustainable plastic management in agroecosystems.

Abstract
This paper presents an approach to integrate tire wear buildup and rainfall-runoff models to simulate tire wear buildup on road surfaces and its subsequent transport in stormwater runoff events. To do so, a buildup model is presented based on vehicle kilometers traveled, vehicle type, vehicle speed, and road roughness within a watershed. This buildup model was integrated into an EPA SWMM model that simulated the runoff of tire wear particles in twelve watersheds in the San Francisco, CA bay area. Results demonstrate that tire wear particle buildup within the watersheds ranged between 0.4 and 0.51 (kg/km2) per hour. Applied to the SWMM model, total event mean tire wear concentrations ranged between 0.5 and 67 μg/L. These concentrations were linearly correlated to depth-integrated samples collected at the outlet of each of the watersheds (R2 = 0.66). The proposed modeling approach can ultimately be applied to create solutions to an emerging stormwater contaminant.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWPs) were considered as an important component of microplastic pollution in the aquatic environment. To understand the ecotoxicity of TWPs to crustacean, this study investigated toxic effects of TWPs and the leachate on the mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis and the accumulation of TWPs in the crabs. Although TWPs could be accumulated in various tissues (i.e., liver, gills and gut) of the crabs, exposure to TWPs or the leachate had no lethal effect on the crabs in this study. Lower concentrations of TWPs and the leachate exposure could stimulate the antioxidant defense system of the crabs, while higher concentrations could disrupt the stress defense system. In addition, the energy supply and metabolism of the crabs could also be affected by TWPs or the leachate. The transcriptomic profiles showed that the toxic mechanisms of TWPs and the leachate were not exactly the same. Similar to the results of biochemical analysis, several Gene Ontology (GO) terms and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways related to oxidative stress and energy metabolism were significantly regulated by both TWPs and the leachate. However, TWPs could affect the expression of genes enriched in immune-related pathways, while the leachate regulated the enrichment of some other signaling pathways including FoxO signaling pathway, insulin signaling pathway, RIG-I-like receptor signaling pathway, NOD-like receptor signaling pathway, PPAR signaling pathway and neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction. Overall, our study could provide basic biological information for assessing the ecological risk of the TWP pollution in the aquatic environment and was useful to understand the potential toxic mechanisms of the TWPs and the leachate to crustaceans.

Abstract
An in-depth understanding of urban road-deposited MPs is important for the accurate prediction of the risk posed by MPs in different exposure scenarios. This study provides new insights into the intrinsic/extrinsic factors in terms of the variability of concentration and species in urban road-deposited MPs. The study results confirmed that a considerable abundance of road-deposited MPs can be identified with the average concentration ranging from 0.33 to 3.64 g m-2. Land use types and sediment particle size are the important factors that contribute to MPs abundance. The majority of detected MPs including polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) are mainly derived from anthropogenic activities in commercial and residential land uses while rubber MP particles in urban road surfaces are mainly derived from tyre wear. The significant correlation (p < 0.05) between MPs and fine dust particles (< 150 µm) indicated the high affinity of small dust particles for MPs. The risk scores from MPs varied greatly from 10 to 11,000 among the study sites, which indicated the significant spatial variation of potential environmental risks posed by road-deposited MPs. The hotspots of risks posed by MPs were in areas with a high fraction of industrial, commercial and residential land uses. Specifically, the highest risk from MPs was found in mixed industrial and residential areas.

Abstract
Tire wear particles (TWP) have become the major microplastic pollution in China. Road runoff containing TWP leachate can decrease the eye size and even induced mortality in the aquatic organisms. However, the toxic mechanism of TWP and road particles (RP) leachate on aquatic organisms is still unclear. In this study, the zebrafish embryos were exposed to TWP or RP leachate for 5 days at both environmental relevant and high concentrations. The adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) were screened from individual to molecular levels. The morphological and behavioral analysis demonstrated that the leachate exposure mainly impaired the eye development of zebrafish larvae and inhibited the larval swim behavior and phototactic response, which are the adverse outcomes. The phototransduction modulated by zebrafish retina was significantly down-regulated through transcriptomics and metabolomics analysis. The eye histopathological analysis showed that the decreased thickness of the retinal outer nuclear layer (ONL) and retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) after leachate exposure were caused by the decreased photoreceptor cells. Moreover, the expression of NR2E3 and TPO genes showed concentration-dependent down-regulation after leachate exposure. The inhibition of photoreceptor cell proliferation was identified as the main reason for photoreceptor cell decrease in zebrafish larval eye. This study, for the first time, uncovered the underlying toxic mechanism of TWP and RP on zebrafish larval eyes.
