Pharmaceuticals and personal care products in water streams: Occurrence, detection, and removal by electrochemical advanced oxidation processes

Occurrence and fate of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in a wastewater treatment plant with Bacillus bio-reactor treatment

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have attracted wide attention due to their environmental impacts and health risks. PPCPs released through wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are estimated to be 80 %. Nevertheless, the occurrence of PPCPs in the WWTPs equipped with Bacillus spec.-based bioreactors (BBR) treatment system remains unclear. In this study, sludge and waste water samples were collected during separate winter and summer sampling campaigns from a typical BBR treatment system. The results indicate that out of 58 target PPCPs, 27 compounds were detected in the waste water (0.06-1900 ng/L), and 23 were found in the sludge (0.6-7755 ng/g dw). Paraxanthine was the chemical of the highest abundance in the influent due to the high consumption of the parent compounds caffeine and theobromine. The profile for PPCPs in the wastewater and sludge exhibited no seasonal variation. Overall, the removal of target PPCPs in summer is more effective than the winter. In the BBR bio-reactor, it was found that selected PPCPs (at ng/L level) can be completely removed. The efficiency for individual PPCP removal was increased from 1.0 % to 50 % in this unit, after target specific adjustments of the process. The effective removal of selected PPCPs by the BBR treatment system is explained by combined sorption and biodegradation processing. The re-occurrence of PPCPs in the wastewater was monitored. Negative removal efficiency was explained by the cleavage of Phase II metabolites after the biotransformation process, and the lack of equilibrium for PPCPs in the sludge of the second clarifier. A compound specific risk quotient (RQ) was calculated and applied for studying the potential environmental risks. Diphenhydramine is found with the highest environmental risk in wastewater, and 15 other PPCPs show negligible risks in sewage sludge.

Fe3O4/biochar modified with molecularly imprinted polymer as efficient persulfate activator for salicylic acid removal from wastewater: Performance and specific recognition mechanism

In this study, a novel Fe3O4-based biochar coupled surface-imprinted polymer was constructed via simple hydrothermal route for salicylic acid recognition and degradation in advanced oxidation processes. The material exhibited excellent adsorption capability, up to 118.23 mg g-1, and efficient degradation performance, 87.44% removal rate within 240 min, based on integrating the advantages of both huge specific surface area as well as abundant functional groups from biochars and specific recognition sites from imprinted cavities. Moreover, high selectivity coefficient (11.67) showed stable recognition in single and binary systems. SO4•- and •OH were confirmed as reactive oxygen species in catalytic reaction according to quenching experiments and EPR analysis. The degradation mechanism and pathway were unraveled by DFT calculations and LC-MS. Furthermore, the results of toxicity evaluation, stability and reusability demonstrated application potential in the field of water environment restoration. This study confirmed that molecular imprinting provided a promising solution to targeted removal of emerging environmental pollutants by degrading after the enrichment of pollutants to the composites surface.

An insight into the role of experimental parameters in advanced oxidation process applied for pharmaceutical degradation

The advanced oxidation process (AOP) is an efficient method to treat recalcitrance pollutants such as pharmaceutical compounds. The essential physicochemical factors in AOP experiments significantly influence the efficiency, speed, cost, and safety of byproducts of the treatment process. In this review, we collected recent articles that investigated the elimination of pharmaceutical compounds by various AOP systems in a water medium, and then we provide an overview of AOP systems, the formation mechanisms of active radicals or reactive oxygen species (ROS), and their detection methods. Then, we discussed the role of the main physicochemical parameters (pH, chemical interference, temperature, catalyst, pollutant concentration, and oxidant concentration) in a critical way. We gained insight into the most frequent scenarios for the proper and improper physicochemical parameters for the degradation of pharmaceutical compounds. Also, we mentioned the main factors that restrict the application of AOP systems in a commercial way. We demonstrated that a proper adjustment of AOP experimental parameters resulted in promoting the treatment performance, decreasing the treatment cost and the treatment operation time, increasing the safeness of the system products, and improving the reaction stoichiometric efficiency. The outcomes of this review will be beneficial for future AOP applicants to improve the pharmaceutical compound treatment by providing a deeper understanding of the role of the parameters. In addition, the proper application of physicochemical parameters in AOP systems acts to track the sustainable development goals (SDGs).

An Overview of Degradation Strategies for Amitriptyline

Antidepressant drugs play a crucial role in the treatment of mental health disorders, but their efficacy and safety can be compromised by drug degradation. Recent reports point to several drugs found in concentrations ranging from the limit of detection (LOD) to hundreds of ng/L in wastewater plants around the globe; hence, antidepressants can be considered emerging pollutants with potential consequences for human health and wellbeing. Understanding and implementing effective degradation strategies are essential not only to ensure the stability and potency of these medications but also for their safe disposal in line with current environment remediation goals. This review provides an overview of degradation pathways for amitriptyline, a typical tricyclic antidepressant drug, by exploring chemical routes such as oxidation, hydrolysis, and photodegradation. Connex issues such as stability-enhancing approaches through formulation and packaging considerations, regulatory guidelines, and quality control measures are also briefly noted. Specific case studies of amitriptyline degradation pathways forecast the future perspectives and challenges in this field, helping researchers and pharmaceutical manufacturers to provide guidelines for the most effective degradation pathways employed for minimal environmental impact.

Advanced oxidation and biological integrated processes for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment: A review

The stress of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) discharging to water bodies and the environment due to increased industrialization has reduced the availability of clean water. This poses a potential health hazard to animals and human life because water contamination is a great issue to the climate, plants, humans, and aquatic habitats. Pharmaceutical compounds are quantified in concentrations ranging from ng/Lto μg/L in aquatic environments worldwide. According to (Alsubih et al., 2022), the concentrations of carbamazepine, sulfamethoxazole, Lutvastatin, ciprofloxacin, and lorazepam were 616-906 ng/L, 16,532-21635 ng/L, 694-2068 ng/L, 734-1178 ng/L, and 2742-3775 ng/L respectively. Protecting and preserving our environment must be well-driven by all sectors to sustain development. Various methods have been utilized to eliminate the emerging pollutants, such as adsorption and biological and advanced oxidation processes. These methods have their benefits and drawbacks in the removal of pharmaceuticals. Successful wastewater treatment can save the water bodies; integrating green initiatives into the main purposes of actor firms, combined with continually periodic awareness of the current and potential implications of environmental/water pollution, will play a major role in water conservation. This article reviews key publications on the adsorption, biological, and advanced oxidation processes used to remove pharmaceutical products from the aquatic environment. It also sheds light on the pharmaceutical adsorption capability of adsorption, biological and advanced oxidation methods, and their efficacy in pharmaceutical concentration removal. A research gap has been identified for researchers to explore in order to eliminate the problem associated with pharmaceutical wastes. Therefore, future study should focus on combining advanced oxidation and adsorption processes for an excellent way to eliminate pharmaceutical products, even at low concentrations. Biological processes should focus on ideal circumstances and microbial processes that enable the simultaneous removal of pharmaceutical compounds and the effects of diverse environments on removal efficiency.

A review of metallurgical slags as catalysts in advanced oxidation processes for removal of refractory organic pollutants in wastewater

With the rapid growth of the metallurgical industry, there is a significant increase in the production of metallurgical slags. The waste slags pose significant challenges for their disposal because of complex compositions, low utilization rates, and environmental toxicity. One promising approach is to utilize metallurgical slags as catalysts for treatment of refractory organic pollutants in wastewater through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), achieving the objective of "treating waste with waste". This work provides a literature review of the source, production, and chemical composition of metallurgical slags, including steel slag, copper slag, electrolytic manganese residue, and red mud. It emphasizes the modification methods of metallurgical slags as catalysts and the application in AOPs for degradation of refractory organic pollutants. The reaction conditions, catalytic performance, and degradation mechanisms of organic pollutants using metallurgical slags are summarized. Studies have proved the feasibility of using metallurgical slags as catalysts for removing various pollutants by AOPs. The catalytic performance was significantly influenced by slags-derived catalysts, catalyst modification, and process factors. Future research should focus on addressing the safety and stability of catalysts, developing green and efficient modification methods, enhancing degradation efficiency, and implementing large-scale treatment of real wastewater. This work offers insights into the resource utilization of metallurgical slags and pollutant degradation in wastewater.

Recent developments on advanced oxidation processes for degradation of pollutants from wastewater with focus on antibiotics and organic dyes

The existence of various pollutants in water environment contributes to global pollution and poses significant threats to humans, wildlife, and other living beings. The emergence of an effective, realistic, cost-effective, and environmentally acceptable technique to treat wastewater generated from different sectors is critical for reducing pollutant accumulation in the environment. The electrochemical advanced oxidation method is a productive technology for treating hazardous effluents because of its potential benefits such as lack of secondary pollutant and high oxidation efficiency. Recent researches on advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in the period of 2018-2022 are highlighted in this paper. This review emphasizes on recent advances in electro-oxidation (EO), ozone oxidation, sonolysis, radiation, electro-Fenton (EF), photolysis and photocatalysis targeted at treating pharmaceuticals, dyes and pesticides polluted effluents. In the first half of the review, the concept of the AOPs are discussed briefly. Later, the influence of increasing current density, pH, electrode, electrolyte and initial concentration of effluents on degradation are discussed. Lastly, previously reported designs of electrochemical reactors, as well as data on intermediates generated and energy consumption during the electro oxidation and Fenton processes are discussed. According to the literature study, the electro-oxidation technique is more appropriate for organic compounds, whilst the electro-Fenton technique appear to be more appropriate for more complex molecules.

Spatial trends and ecotoxic risk assessment of selected pharmaceuticals in sediments from Lake Victoria, Uganda, East Africa

Pharmaceutical residues in the aquatic environment are an emerging issue of global concern because of their effects on ecosystems including; antibacterial resistance development and endocrine disruption. Lake Victoria is the largest freshwater lake in Africa, and the second largest lake in the world. It is also the main source of the White Nile River, arguably the longest river in the world, flowing through South Sudan, Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt, discharging into the Mediterranean Sea. However, its ecology is threatened by rapid industrialisation, urbanization, and increased agricultural activities, which have led to increased pollution via polluted runoffs. In this study, the occurrence of twenty-five pharmaceutical compounds (14 antibiotics, four anti-epileptic and antidepressant drugs, three analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs, three beta-blockers, and one lipid regulator) was studied in 55 sediment samples obtained from the Ugandan sector of Lake Victoria, and their ecotoxic risk assessed. All the target compounds were quantifiable with levofloxacin (2-120 ng g-1 dm; dry mass), ciprofloxacin (3-130 ng g-1 dm) enoxacin (9-75 ng g-1 dm), ibuprofen (6-50 ng g-1 dm), metoprolol (1-92 ng g-1 dm) and propranolol (1-52 ng g-1 dm) being predominant. Murchison Bay, being the chief recipient of sewage effluents, municipal and industrial waste from Kampala city and its suburbs, had the highest levels. Ecotoxic risk assessment revealed that ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethazine, oxytetracycline, tetracycline, erythromycin, norfloxacin, ibuprofen, diclofenac, carbamazepine, atenolol, and metoprolol posed high toxic risks to sediment-dwelling organisms (risk quotients, RQ >1). This is the first study reporting concentrations and ecotoxic risks of pharmaceuticals in sediments of Lake Victoria, Uganda, and the whole of East Africa. Detection, identification and quantification of pharmaceuticals in Lake Victoria sediments is essential for gaining knowledge on their occurrence and fate which can ultimately be used to assist in constructing relevant policy and management recommendations.

NiFe-PANI composites synthesized by electrodeposition for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of diclofenac sodium from wastewater

A simple inexpensive approach was used to synthesize NiFe-PANI nanocomposites and used for photodegradation of diclofenac sodium (DCF) in water sources. Morphological, optical, structural, and catalytic properties of the nanocomposites were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) to confirm the cubic structure of NiFe nanoparticles and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) that revealed the presence of NiFe and PANI, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed the uniform distribution of NiFe nanoparticles onto the surface of PANI, Energy-Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) was utilized to validate the composition of the obtained Permalloy NiFe-PANI nanocomposites, optical properties confirmed the decrease of Eg band gap from 2.62 to 2.51 eV by the addition of NiFe. The NiFe-PANI composite showed superior photocatalytic efficiency in degrading DCF, achieving 82.53% degradation in 15 min and 97.89% in 60 min. This was significantly higher than the PANI alone, which achieved 62.72 and 93.48% degradation in the same time intervals respectively. The results indicated that the photocatalytic efficiency remained consistent, with no observable decrease, even after five cycles of recycling. The NiFe-PANI catalyst served as an efficient and cost-effective photocatalyst for DCF degradation, and the study holds promise for the photocatalytic removal of other organic pollutants from water and wastewater.

A systematic review on the current situation of emerging pollutants in Mexico: A perspective on policies, regulation, detection, and elimination in water and wastewater

Emerging pollutants (EPs) emerged as a group of new compounds whose presence in the environment has been widely detected in Mexico. In this country, different concentrations of pharmaceutical compounds, pesticides, dyes, and microplastics have been reported, which vary depending on the region and the analyzed matrix (i.e., wastewater, surface water, groundwater). The evidence of the EPs' presence focuses on the detection of them, but there is a gap in information regarding is biomonitoring and their effects in health in Mexico. The presence of these pollutants in the country associated with lack of proper regulations in the discharge and disposal of EPs. Therefore, this review aims to provide a comprehensive view of the current environmental status, policies, and frameworks regarding Mexico's situation. The review also highlights the lack of information about biomonitoring since EPs are present in water even after their treatment, leading to a critical situation, which is high exposure to humans and animals. Although, technologies to efficiently eliminate EPs are available, their application has been reported only at a laboratory scale thus far. Here, an overview of health and environmental impacts and a summary of the research works reported in Mexico from 2014 to 2023 were presented. This review concludes with a concrete point of view and perspective on the status of the EPs' research in Mexico as an alert for government entities about the necessity of measures to control the EPs disposal and treatment.

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) degradation and microbial characteristics of low-temperature operation combined with constructed wetlands

Emerging contaminants (ECs), which are present in water bodies, could cause global environmental and human health problems. These contaminants originate from various sources such as hospitals, clinics, households, and industries. Additionally, they can also indirectly enter the water supply through runoff from agriculture and leachate from landfills. ECs, specifically Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), are causing widespread concern due to their contribution to persistent water pollution. Traditional approaches often involve expensive chemicals and energy or result in the creation of by-products. This study developed a practical and environmentally-friendly method for removing PPCPs, which involved combining and integrating various techniques. To implement this method, it was necessary to establish and used a field simulator based on the real-life scenario. Based on the data analysis, the average removal rates of COD, TP, TN, and NH4+-N were 57%, 59%, 63%, and 73%, respectively. the removal rate of PPCPs by CCWs was found to be 82.7% after comparing samples that were not treated by constructed wetlands and those that were treated. Combined constructed wetlands (CCWs) were found to effectively remove PPCPs from water. This is due to the combined action of plant absorption, absorption, and biodegradation by microorganisms living in the wetlands. Interestingly, the wetland plant reed had been shown to play an important role in removing these pollutants. Microbial degradation was the most important pathway for PPCPs removal in CCWs. Carbamazepine was selected as a typical PPCP for analysis. In addition, the microbial community structure of the composite filler was also investigated. High-throughput sequencing confirmed that the dominant bacteria had good adaptability to PPCPs. This technique not only reduced the potential environmental impact but also served as a foundation for further research on the use of constructed wetlands for the treatment of PPCPs contaminated water bodies and its large-scale implementation.

Rapid analysis of pharmaceutical and personal care products by soft microwave-based plasma ionization-linear ion trap mass spectrometer (SMPI-LTQ) in natural water

In this study, a soft microwave plasma torch (SMPT) combined with a mass spectrometer (MS) was used for the first time as an analytical method to detect and analyze various pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environments without the need for sample pretreatment. For this purpose, ambient SMPT was used to generate plasma for ionizing the analyte molecules. Accordingly, nine PPCPs were identified by the SMPT-MS, and their identification was verified by collision-induced dissociation (CID). The technique's performance was verified with known PPCP samples, and the limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) obtained over a linear range of 50-1 μg/L were 1.56 to 2.81 and 2.07 to 3.62 μg/L, respectively, with the standard addition recovery rate falling between 87.14 and 115.16%. These results show that the method has excellent sensitivity and selectivity, suggesting that SMPT can rapidly and directly detect PPCPs in environmental water, making it a promising method for rapid water quality inspection.

A review of electro-Fenton and ultrasound processes: towards a novel integrated technology for wastewater treatment

Nowadays, the presence of persistent dissolved pollutants in water has received increasing attention due to their toxic effects on living organisms. Considering the limitations of conventional wastewater treatment processes for the degradation of these compounds, advanced oxidation processes such as electro-Fenton and sono-chemical process, as well as their combination, appear as potentially effective options for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with bio-recalcitrant pollutants. In view of the importance of the development of processes using real effluents, this review aims to provide a comprehensive perspective of sono-electro-Fenton-related processes applied for real wastewater treatment. In the first section, the fundamentals and effectiveness of both homogeneous and heterogeneous electro-Fenton approaches for the treatment of real wastewater are presented. While the second part of this work describes the fundamentals of ultrasound-based processes, the last section focuses on the coupling of the two methods for real wastewater treatment and on the effect of the main operational parameters of the process. On the basis of the information presented, it is suggested that sono-electro-Fenton processes substantially increase the efficiency of the treatment as well as the biodegradability of the treated wastewater. The combined effect results from mass transfer improvement, electrode cleaning and activation, water electrolysis, and the electro-Fenton-induced production of hydroxyl radicals. The information presented in this work is expected to be useful for closing the gap between laboratory-scale assays and the development of novel wastewater technologies.

Removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products from wastewater via anodic oxidation and electro-Fenton processes: current status and needs regarding their application

This review provides a current opinion on the most recent works that have been published toward the application of electrochemical advance oxidation processes (EAOPs) for the degradation of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in water streams. Advances in the application of anodic oxidation (AO)- and electro-Fenton (EF)-based processes are reported, including operational conditions, electrode performance, and removal. Although AO- and EF-based processes can easily reach 100% removal of PPCPs, mineralization is desirable to avoid the generation of potential toxic byproducts. The following section exploring some techno-economic aspects of the application of EAOPs is based on electrode selection, operational costs as well as their use as cotreatments, and their synergistic effects. Finally, this short review ends with perspectives about the emerging topics that are faced by these technologies applied for the degradation of PPCPs in research and practice.

Adsorption Ability of Graphene Aerogel and Reduced Graphene Aerogel toward 2,4-D Herbicide and Salicylic Acid

Within this work, new aerogels based on graphene oxide are proposed to adsorb salicylic acid (SA) and herbicide 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) from aqueous media. Graphene oxide aerogel (GOA) and reduced graphene oxide aerogel (rGOA) were obtained by freeze-drying processes and then studied by Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The influence of contact time and the concentration of the adsorbates were also assessed. It was found that equilibrium for high adsorption is reached in 150 min. In a single system, the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order kinetic models, Intraparticle diffusion, and Elovich models were used to discuss the detail of the aerogel adsorbing pollutant. Moreover, the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Temkin adsorption models were applied to describe the equilibrium isotherms and calculate the isotherm constants.

An electrochemical sensor based on synergistic enhancement effects between nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes and copper ions for ultrasensitive determination of anti-diabetic metformin

Metformin (MET) is the primary medicine for type II diabetes, which produces carcinogenic byproducts during chlorine disinfection, so the detection of MET in aqueous environment is crucial. In this work, an electrochemical sensor based on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNT) has been constructed for ultrasensitive determination of MET in the presence of Cu(II) ions. The excellent conductivity and rich π-conjugated structure of NCNT facilitate the electron transfer rate of fabricated sensor and benefit the adsorption of cation ions. Cu(II) ions can chelate with MET to form MET-Cu(II) complex, which are easily accumulated on the surface of NCNT through cation-π interaction. Attributing to the synergistic enhancement effects of NCNT and Cu(II) ions, the fabricated sensor exhibits excellent analytical performances with a low detection limit of 9.6 nmol L^-1, high sensitivity of 64.97 A mol^-1 cm^-2 and wide linear range of 0.3-10 μmol L^-1. The sensing system has been successfully applied for rapid (20 s) and selective determination of MET in real water samples with satisfactory recoveries (90.2 %-108.8 %). This study provides a robust strategy for MET detection in aqueous environment and holds great promise for rapid risk assessment and early warning of MET.

Performance of a Pilot-Scale Continuous Flow Ozone-Based Hospital Wastewater Treatment System

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is becoming a global concern. Recently, research has emerged to evaluate the human and environmental health implications of wastewater from medical facilities and to identify acceptable wastewater treatment methods. In this study, a disinfection wastewater treatment system using an ozone-based continuous flow system was installed in a general hospital located in Japan. The effectiveness of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria (ARB) and antimicrobials in mitigating the environmental impact of hospital wastewater was evaluated. Metagenomic analysis was conducted to characterize the microorganisms in the wastewater before and after treatment. The results demonstrated that ozone treatment enables effective inactivation of general gut bacteria, including Bacteroides, Prevotella, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, DNA molecules, and ARGs, as well as antimicrobials. Azithromycin and doxycycline removal rates were >99% immediately after treatment, and levofloxacin and vancomycin removal rates remained between 90% and 97% for approximately one month. Clarithromycin was more readily removed than the other antimicrobials (81-91%), and no clear removal trend was observed for ampicillin. Our findings provide a better understanding of the environmental management of hospital wastewater and enhance the effectiveness of disinfection wastewater treatment systems at medical facilities for mitigating the discharge of pollutants into aquatic environments.

Effective removal of selected pharmaceuticals from sewerage treatment plant effluent using natural clay (Na-montmorillonite)

The consumption of pharmaceuticals has rapidly increased on a global scale due to the serious increase in Covid-19, influenza and respiratuar sinsityal virus, which is called "triple epidemic" in the world. The use of non-prescription analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs (AAIDs), especially paracetamol, is higher compared to pre-pandemic. This increased the AAIDs load discharged to the aqueous media through sewerage treatment plant (STP). Therefore, simple and effective treatment options for removing AAIDs from STP effluents are needed. The aim of the study was to remove AAIDs (paracetamol, acetylsalicylic acid, codeine, diclofenac, ibuprofen, indomethacin, ketoprofen, mefenamic acid, naproxen, and phenylbutazone) from STP effluents by nearly pure natural clay Na-montmorillonite. The Na-montmorillonite taken from the Ordu region in the northern part of Turkey. Surface area of the Na-montmorillonite is 99.58 m2/g and CEC is 92.40 meq/100 g. The removal efficiencies of AAIDs using Na-montmorillonite were between 82 ± 5% (ibuprofen) and 94 ± 4% (naproxen). Paracetamol was used as a model compound in kinetic and isotherm model studies. Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo second order kinetic model were the best-fit using the obtained experimental data. Film diffusion governed its rate mechanism. The paracetamol adsorption capacity was acquired as 244 mg/g at 120 min contact time at pH 6.5 at 25 °C. With this study, it could be shown that montmorillonite can be used effectively to eliminate paracetamol from STP effluent. Natural clay can be used as a simple, inexpensive and effective adsorbent for removing AAIDs from STP effluents.

Do Synthetic Fragrances in Personal Care and Household Products Impact Indoor Air Quality and Pose Health Risks?

Fragrance compounds (synthetic fragrances or natural essential oils) comprise formulations of specific combinations of individual materials or mixtures. Natural or synthetic scents are core constituents of personal care and household products (PCHPs) that impart attractiveness to the olfactory perception and disguise the unpleasant odor of the formula components of PCHPs. Fragrance chemicals have beneficial properties that allow their use in aromatherapy. However, because fragrances and formula constituents of PCHPs are volatile organic compounds (VOCs), vulnerable populations are exposed daily to variable indoor concentrations of these chemicals. Fragrance molecules may trigger various acute and chronic pathological conditions because of repetitive human exposure to indoor environments at home and workplaces. The negative impact of fragrance chemicals on human health includes cutaneous, respiratory, and systemic effects (e.g., headaches, asthma attacks, breathing difficulties, cardiovascular and neurological problems) and distress in workplaces. Pathologies related to synthetic perfumes are associated with allergic reactions (e.g., cutaneous and pulmonary hypersensitivity) and potentially with the perturbation of the endocrine-immune-neural axis. The present review aims to critically call attention to odorant VOCs, particularly synthetic fragrances and associated formula components of PCHPs, potentially impacting indoor air quality and negatively affecting human health.

Solar Photocatalysis for the Decontamination Of Water from Emerging Pharmaceutical Pollutant Chloroquine Using Nano ZnO as the Catalyst

Photo-driven advanced oxidation process (AOP) with pharmaceutical wastewater has been poorly investigated so far. This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on the photocatalytic degradation of emerging pharmaceutical contaminant chloroquine (CLQ) in water using zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles as the catalyst and solar light (SL) as the source of energy. The catalyst was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDAX), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The effect of various operating parameters such as catalyst loading, the concentration of target substrate, pH, and the effect of oxidants and anions (salts) on the efficiency of degradation was tested. The degradation follows pseudo-first-order kinetics. Surprisingly, contrary to the observation in most photocatalytic studies, the degradation is more efficient under solar radiation, with 77% under solar (SL) irradiation and 65% under UV light in 60 min. The degradation leads to slow and complete COD removal through several intermediates identified by the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) technique. The results suggest the possibility of using inexpensive natural, non-renewable solar energy for the purification of CLQ-contaminated water, thereby enabling the reuse of scarce water resources.

Treatment Trends and Combined Methods in Removing Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products from Wastewater-A Review

When discharged into wastewater, pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) become microorganic contaminants and are among the largest groups of emerging pollutants. Human, animal, and aquatic organisms' exposures to PPCPs have linked them to an array of carcinogenic, mutagenic, and reproductive toxicity risks. For this reason, various methods are being implemented to remove them from water bodies. This report critically reviews these methods and suggests improvements to removal strategies. Biological, physical, and chemical methods such as biological degradation, adsorption, membrane filtration, and advanced electrical and chemical oxidation are the common methods used. However, these processes were not integrated into most studies to take advantage of the different mechanisms specific to each process and are synergistic in the removal of the PPCPs that differ in their physical and chemical characteristics (charge, molecular weight, hydrophobicity, hydrogen bonding, structure). In the review articles published to date, very little information is available on the use of such integrated methods for removing PPCPs. This report attempts to fill this gap with our knowledge.

Degradation of antibiotics by electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs): Performance, mechanisms, and perspectives

Global consumption and discharge of antibiotics have led to the rapid development and spread of bacterial antibiotic resistance. Among treatment strategies, electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) are gaining popularity for treating water/wastewater containing antibiotics due to their high efficiency and easiness of operation. In this review, we summarize various forms of EAOPs that contribute to antibiotic degradation, including common electrochemical oxidation (EO), electrolyte enhanced EO, electro-Fenton (EF) processes, EF-like process, and EAOPs coupling with other processes. Then we assess the performance of various EAOPs in antibiotic degradation and discuss the influence of key factors, including electrode, initial concentration and type of antibiotic, operation conditions, electrolyte, and water quality. We also review mechanisms and degradation pathways of various antibiotics degradation by EAOPs, and address the species and toxicity of intermediates produced during antibiotics treatment. Finally, we highlight challenges and critical research needs to facilitate the application of EAOPs in antibiotic treatment.

Attitudes and opinions about ecopharmacovigilance from multi-disciplinary perspectives: a cross-sectional survey among academic researchers in China

As a promising upstream strategy to reduce the environmental loads of pharmaceutical emerging contaminants (PECs) through source control, ecopharmacovigilance (EPV) is concerned with the set of activities to identify, evaluate, understand, and prevent against diverse PEC-related problems, and has been accepted as a multi-disciplinary and multi-stakeholder system. This cross-sectional observational survey aimed to assess the attitudes and opinions about EPV from multi-disciplinary perspectives among Chinese academic professors from four main EPV-related disciplines including pharmacy, management, clinical medicine, and environmental and ecological science based on a self-developed questionnaire. Forty-two usable survey instruments were acquired. Results showed that the responding Chinese academic researchers from different disciplines expressed consistently positive attitudes and strong intentions for EPV, in spite of several disparities existing among disciplinary groups showing that pharmacy and medical researchers felt more certain of the environmental adverse effects of PECs, and researchers in pharmacy and environmental and ecological science were more interested in EPV. A multi-disciplinary consensus was achieved in regard to the types of key stakeholders in EPV practices including the pharmaceutical manufacturers, the public, the drug safety authority, hospitals, and the environmental protection agency. The main roles and responsibilities of each stakeholder identity in EPV practices were summarized based on the expert opinions.

Occurrence of emerging organic contaminants and endocrine disruptors in different water compartments in Mexico - A review

This review compiles the studies (2007-2021) regarding the occurrence of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) and endocrine disruptors (EDs) in wastewater, surface water and groundwater in Mexico. A total of 174 compounds were detected, including pharmaceuticals, hormones, plasticizers, personal care products, sweeteners, drugs, and pesticides considered as EDs. The levels of EOCs and EDs varied from ng/L to 140 mg/L, depending on the compound, location, and compartment. Raw wastewater was the most studied matrix, showing a greater abundance and number of detected compounds. Nevertheless, surface waters showed high concentrations of bisphenol-A, butylbenzil-phthalate, triclosan, pentachlorophenol, and the hormones estrone, 17 α-ethinylestradiol, and 17 β-estradiol, which exceeded the thresholds set by international guidelines. Concentrations of 17 α-ethinylestradiol and triclosan exceeding the above-mentioned limits were reported in groundwater. Cropland irrigation with raw wastewater was the principal activity introducing EOCs and EDs into groundwater. The groundwater abundance of EOCs was considerably lesser than that of wastewater, highlighting the attenuation capacity of soils/aquifers during wastewater infiltration. However, carbamazepine and N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide showed higher concentrations in groundwater than those in wastewater, suggesting their accumulation/concentration in soils/pore-waters. Although the contamination of water resources represents one of the most environmental concerns in Mexico, this review brings to light the lack of studies on the occurrence of EOCs in Mexican waters, which is important for public health policies and for developing legislations that incorporates EOCs as priority contaminants in national water quality guidelines. Consequently, the development of legislations will support regulatory compliance for wastewater and drinking water, reducing the human exposure.

Occurrence of Selected Emerging Contaminants in Southern Europe WWTPs: Comparison of Simulations and Real Data

Emerging contaminants (ECs) include a diverse group of compounds not commonly monitored in wastewaters, which have become a global concern due to their potential harmful effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. In the present work, six ECs (ibuprofen, diclofenac, erythromycin, triclosan, imidacloprid and 17α-ethinylestradiol) were monitored for nine months in influents and effluents taken from four wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Except for the case of ibuprofen, which was in all cases in lower concentrations than those usually found in previous works, results found in this work were within the ranges normally reported. Global removal efficiencies were calculated, in each case being very variable, even when the same EC and facility were considered. In addition, the SimpleTreat model was tested by comparing simulated and real ibuprofen, diclofenac and erythromycin data. The best agreement was obtained for ibuprofen which was the EC with the highest removal efficiencies.

Removal of Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) by Free Radicals in Advanced Oxidation Processes

As emerging pollutants, pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) have received extensive attention due to their high detection frequency (with concentrations ranging from ng/L to μg/L) and potential risk to aqueous environments and human health. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are effective techniques for the removal of PPCPs from water environments. In AOPs, different types of free radicals (HO·, SO₄·^-, O₂·^-, etc.) are generated to decompose PPCPs into non-toxic and small-molecule compounds, finally leading to the decomposition of PPCPs. This review systematically summarizes the features of various AOPs and the removal of PPCPs by different free radicals. The operation conditions and comprehensive performance of different types of free radicals are summarized, and the reaction mechanisms are further revealed. This review will provide a quick understanding of AOPs for later researchers.

Effect of Functionalized Benzene Derivatives as Potential Hole Scavengers for BiVO4 and rGO-BiVO4 Photoelectrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Sustainable hydrogen production is one of the main challenges today in the transition to a green and sustainable economy. Photocatalytic hydrogen production is one of the most promising technologies, amongst which BiVO₄-based processes are highly attractive due to their suitable band gap for solar-driven processes. However, the performance of BiVO₄ alone in this role is often unsatisfactory. Herein we report the improvement of BiVO₄ performance with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as a co-catalyst for the photoelectrochemical water splitting (PEC-WS) in the presence of simple functionalized benzene derivatives (SFBDs), i.e., phenol (PH), benzoic acid (BA), salicylic acid (SA), and 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) as potential photogenerated hole scavengers from contaminated wastewaters. Linear sweep voltammetry and chronoamperometry, along with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were utilized to elucidate PEC-WS performance under illumination. rGO has remarkably improved the performance of BiVO₄ in this role by decreasing photogenerated charge recombination. In addition, 5-ASA greatly improved current densities. After 120 min under LED illumination, 0.53 μmol of H₂ was produced. The type and concentration of SFBDs can have significant and at times opposite effects on the PEC-WS performance of both BiVO₄ and rGO-BiVO₄.

Pore creation nanoarchitectonics from non-porous metal-organic framework to porous carbon for adsorptive elimination of sulfanilamide and chloroxylenol from aqueous solution

Three isomeric metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) such as MAF-5, - 6, and - 32 (with the same composition of [Zn(2-ethylimidazole)₂]) were carbonized and, for the first time, activated further with KOH to prepare highly porous MOF-derived carbons (MDCs). Importantly, MDC-32 derived from non-porous MAF-32 had the highest porosity among the three MDCs although it has the lowest porosity when no KOH activation was done. Adsorption of sulfanilamide and chloroxylenol from water was investigated with the MDCs. Among the MDCs, MDC-32 showed the best adsorptive performance for sulfanilamide and chloroxylenol. Moreover, MDC-32, had the highest adsorption capacity (256 mg/g) for removing sulfanilamide from water, compared with any adsorbent reported so far. Based on the observed adsorption and properties of the adsorbate and adsorbent, π-π and hydrogen bonding interactions, with a slight contribution of repulsive electrostatic interaction, could be suggested as the mechanism for the sulfanilamide adsorption over the MDC-32. Moreover, the MDC-32 could be recycled easily for up to four cycles. It could be suggested that non-porous MOFs can be a good precursor for highly porous MDCs, if activated well using KOH, for example. Finally, MAF-32-derived carbon, MDC-32, might be suggested as a plausible adsorbent to eliminate organics such as sulfanilamide from water.

Improved degradation of tetracycline antibiotic in electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs): bioassay using bacteria and identification of intermediate compounds

Among the pharmaceutical compounds, tetracycline is the second most common group of antibiotics in terms of production and consumption worldwide, which their entrance in to hospital, domestic and industrial wastewaters pollute water sources and environment and finally leads to antibiotic resistance. The aim of this study was to determine the efficiency of electrochemical processes, Fenton, electro-Fenton (EF) and sono-electro-Fenton (SEF) separately and using Graphite (G)/β-PbO2 anode to remove tetracycline from aqueous solutions. First, experiments for the electrochemical process by the response-surface methodology (RSM) using variables including pH (3–9), initial tetracycline concentration (20–100 mg/L), electrolysis time (4–45 min) and current density (0.5–4.5 mA/cm2) was designed and the optimal conditions of these variables were 3.5, 25.6 mg/L, 42.6 min, and 1.98 mA/cm2, respectively. Under the optimal conditions of the electrochemical process, the effect of FeSO4 with values of 0.02-0.08 g/250 mL in the Fenton process and the effect of H2O2 of 0.05–0.5 mg/L in the EF process were investigated, and the optimal values of 0.06 g/250 mL and 0.2 mg/L was obtained for FeSO4 and H2O2, respectively. Under optimal conditions, the removal efficiencies of SEF, EF, sono-electrochemical (SEC), electrochemical, Fenton and ultrasonic processes were 98.8%, 93.6%, 87.9%, 81.3%, 71.6%, and 11.5%, respectively. G/β-PbO2 anode had only 37.5% higher removal efficiency than graphite anode. Under the optimal conditions of SEF process, changes in toxicity reduction by bioassay with E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria were 86% and 58.4%, respectively, and the kinetic study showed that the removal of tetracycline by SEF process with R2=0.9975 followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics. Finally, intermediate compounds obtained from tetracycline analysis were identified using LC-MS analysis.
