Abstract
The Orchidaceae family comprises a highly diverse group of flowering plants. The genus Cattleya is restricted to the Neotropics, with approximately 80 % of the species present in Brazil occurring in epiphytic, rupicolous, and terrestrial habitats. During surveys that aimed to investigate root fungal endophytes of two native orchids, C. locatellii and C. violacea, a total of 10 endophytic isolates were identified as belonging to Eurotiales. A polyphasic approach was applied for the identification and characterization of the cultured species, combining morphological and molecular data. Phylogenetic analyses were performed using the internal transcribed spacers (ITS) of the rDNA, beta-tubulin (BenA), calmodulin (CaM), and RNA polymerase second-largest subunit (RPB2) sequences. Two new endophytic species were identified and described from roots of C. locatellii, namely Penicillium endophyticum sp. nov. (section Aspergilloides), and Talaromyces cattleyae sp. nov. (section Purpurei). In addition, P. yuyongnianii (section Lanata-Divaricata), T. amestolkiae, and T. atkinsoniae (section Talaromyces) were reported as endophytes from the genus Cattleya. Abstract
Genome mining has revealed that Penicillium spp. possess numerous down-regulated or cryptic biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). This finding hinted that our investigation of fungal secondary metabolomes is limited. Herein, we report a genetically-modified activation strategy to characterize the spectrum of sesquiterpenoids produced by Penicillium brasilianum CGMCC 3.4402. The cryptic or down-regulated pathways were stimulated by constitutive expression of pathway-specific regulator gene berA responsible for berkeleyacetals biosynthesis from Neosartorya glabra. Chemical analysis of the extracts from the mutant strain Pb-OE:berA enabled the isolation of two new compounds including one bisabolene-type arpenibisabolane C (1), one daucane-type arpenicarotane C (4), along with four known sesquiterpenoids including arpenibisabolane A (2), eupenicisirenins A (3), arpenicarotane B (5) and aspterric acid (6). The assignments of their structures were elucidated from detailed analyses of spectroscopic data, electronic circular dichroism calculation, and biogenetic considerations. The bioassay of isolated compounds (1-6) exhibited no cytotoxic activities against three tumor cells including MCF-7, HepG2, and A549. Arpenibisabolane C (1) and A (2) showed weak inhibition bioactivities on aquatic pathogens Vibrio owensii and Vibrio algivorus. Moreover, phylogenetic analysis and sequence alignments of crucial sesquiterpene synthases were performed. Based on the chemical structures and biogenetic investigations, a hypothetic pathway of new compounds (1, 4) was proposed.

Abstract
The discharge of treated wastewater effluents into river-fed irrigation canals results in a de facto form of water reuse. Waterborne fungal populations in such environments pose a unique human health concern given that opportunistic fungal pathogens can be proliferated during spray irrigation of crops. In the present study, we consider two different routes (effluent discharge versus bioaerosols) through which wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can impact the presence and abundance of fungal communities in irrigation canals of the Rio Grande river basin in New Mexico. Site A was selected to investigate the influence of effluent discharge from a WWTP on waterborne fungal communities in a receiving irrigation canal. Site B represented an irrigation canal that was directly adjacent to a WWTP but that receives no effluent discharge (to exemplify bioaerosolization exclusively). Sampling dates were chosen to capture variations in weather and stream flow conditions at each of the two sites. Results indicated that treated wastewater discharged into the canal had a distinct impact on fungal community composition, especially under low wind and flow conditions. When stream flow was highest, variations along the canal at Site A were minimal. The highest occurrence of pathogen-associated genera was observed at Site B under high wind conditions with an average relative abundance of 20.9 ± 13.1% (peak of 39.3%) and was attributable to bioaerosol emissions from the WWTP and a nearby livestock facility. Such genera included Alternaria, Cladosporium, and Cryptococcus. These findings suggest that although treated effluent discharge can directly impact irrigation canal fungal community composition, bioaerosols likely have a larger overall effect on the spread of potential fungal pathogens.

Abstract
Cicer arietinum L. is a vital source of nutrients that suffers substantial annual losses due to Ascochyta blight, caused by the plant pathogen Ascochyta rabiei. This study aimed to investigate the antifungal potential of Ocimum tenuiflorum L. and O. basilicum L. shoots (leaves and stems) against A. rabiei (Pass) Lab. In vitro bioassays were conducted using methanolic extracts from leaves and stems at six different concentrations: 1%, 1.5%, 2%, 2.5%, 3%, and 3.5%. A total of eight compounds were identified through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. The highest inhibition of A. rabiei growth was achieved with a 3.5% methanolic leaf extract of O. basilicum. Methanolic extracts from O. tenuiflorum shoots also reduced fungal growth by 6.18-73%. Additionally, the n-hexane fraction derived from O. basilicum inhibited fungal growth by 71-76% and was subsequently analyzed using GC-MS. This analysis identified eight compounds: (1) cyclopentane, methyl-, (2) cyclohexane, (3) 2,2-dimethylbutane, (4) 2,3-dimethylbutane, pentane, (5) 2,3-dimethyl-, (6) 2-bromoacetonitrile, (7) alpha-cadinol, and (8) phenylpropanolamine. The antioxidant activity of O. tenuiflorum and O. basilicum shoots was also assessed using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. The highest antioxidant activity, 98.58%, was recorded at a 3.5% methanolic stem extract concentration of O. tenuiflorum. The antioxidant activity potential was highest for O. tenuiflorum at 0.729mg/mL, followed by O. basilicum at 0.411mg/mL.

Abstract
Marine alga-derived fungal strain КММ 4176 was identified as Aspergillus niveoglaucus based on ITS region BenA, CaM and RPB2 gene sequence analysis. The anthraquinone derivatives emodin anthrone (1) and 4-hydroxyemodin anthrone (2), chromone derivative aloesone (3), and indole diketopiperazine alkaloid neoechinulin B (4) were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of this fungus. In addition, UPLC MS data analysis of the KMM 4176 extract showed the presence of 17 echinulin-family alkaloids, as well as their biogenetic precursor cyclo(L-alanyl-L-tryptophyl) and a number of polyketide compounds. Emodin anthrone and 4-hydroxyemodin anthrone were found as inhibitors of biofilm formation by Staphylococcus aureus with half-maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of 5.5 µM and 23.7 µM, respectively. Moreover, emodin anthrone (1) and 4-hydroxyemodin anthrone (2) inhibited staphylococcal sortase A activity with IC50 of 9.2 µM and 37.6 µM, respectively. Aloesone (3) also inhibited S. aureus biofilm formation but was less active. The first data on neoechinulin B (4) antibiofilm activity and sortase A inhibition were obtained. The positive effects of the isolated compounds on the growth of HaCaT keratinocytes infected with S. aureus were also observed.

Abstract
The fungal species of the genus Penicillium can be found across a diverse array of environments. The infrageneric classification of the genus Penicillium has been studied with comparison of morphological and phylogenetical features, derived into two subgenus, 32 sections, and 89 series. In this study, 11 fungal strains were isolated from freshwater environments, plant litter, and nearby substrates in Korea and were identified as previously unreported species. The internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions, β-tubulin (BenA), calmodulin (CaM), and RNA polymerase II subunit (RPB2) genes were analyzed for phylogenetic analyses. A neighbor-joining tree was then constructed using the concatenated DNA sequences, and the strains were compared with closely related species of the genus Penicillium. The strain clustered into distinct phylogenetic lineages, confirming their classification as P. contaminatum, P. jinfoshanicum, P. xuanhanense, and P. soppii. NNIBRFG40229 exhibits monoverticillate conidiophores with flask-shaped phialides, characteristic of P. contaminatum; NNIBRFG1595 presents divaricate conidiophores, consistent with P. jinfoshanicum; NNIBRFG5602 shows a velutinous texture with orange pigmentation, resembling P. xuanhanense; and NNIBRFG4602 shows biverticillate conidiophores with cylindrical metulae, corresponding to P. soppii. This study provides the first report of these species in Korea, enhancing taxonomic understanding.

Abstract
Edible and medicinal substances can be contaminated by fungi during harvesting, processing, and storage, leading to mycotoxin production and quality deterioration. The distribution of mycotoxigenic fungi in edible and medicinal substances was investigated in this study. Fungi and mycotoxins were detected in 163 commercially available edible and medicinal substances using standard microbiological techniques and high-performance liquid chromatography. A total of 92.0% of samples contained fungi (0.5-5.3 lg colony-forming units (CFU)·g-1); 208 fungal strains belonging to 16 genera were identified, predominantly Aspergillus and Penicillium. Aspergillus section Nigri (30.3%) produced fumonisin B2, which was distributed mainly in radix and rhizome samples. Thirteen samples had mycotoxins, of which ochratoxin A was the most common, followed by aflatoxins and zearalenone (ZEN). One Nelumbinis semen sample contained 10.75 μg·kg-1 AFB1, and one Raisin tree semen sample contained 484.30 μg·kg-1 ZEN, which exceeded regulatory limits in Europe and China. These findings highlight the potential risks associated with fungal contamination and mycotoxins in edible and medicinal substances. Enhanced quality control measures are essential to reduce contamination during harvesting, processing, and storage. Expanded mycotoxin screening, improved preservation techniques, and stricter regulatory standards need to be implemented to ensure consumer safety.

Abstract
Apple blue mold, caused by the Penicillium species, is a significant postharvest disease, leading to food loss and impacting food safety due to mycotoxin contamination. This study aimed to identify the Penicillium species associated with apple blue mold in Serbia, assess their pathogenicity, and evaluate their patulin production potential. A total of 70 Penicillium isolates were collected from symptomatic apple fruit and identified as P. expansum (92.9%), P. crustosum (4.3%), P. solitum (1.4%), and P. chrysogenum (1.4%). The pathogenicity assay revealed P. expansum strains as the most virulent. Molecular detection of msas gene and HPLC analysis confirmed patulin production exclusively in P. expansum isolates. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) grouped P. expansum strains in two distinctive clusters, while P. crustosum strains clustered separately with P. solitum and P. chrysogenum, yet in distinct positions. This is the first report of P. solitum and P. chrysogenum as causal agents of apple blue mold in Serbia. The results of the study provide insights that might be useful in the development of effective control strategies for apple blue mold, ensuring consumption of healthy and safe apple fruit and apple-based products.

Abstract
The order Hypocreales, which belongs to the Ascomycota class Sordariomycetes, has a large number of species and occupies a variety of ecological niches, including saprophytic, symbiotic, and parasitic fungi. While much research has focused on terrestrial Hypocrealean fungi, there remains a significant gap in our understanding of their diversity and ecological roles in marine environments. In this study, we isolated 47 fungal strains from various marine habitats in South Korea. Through the polyphasic study, including phylogenetic analysis using multi-genetic markers (ITS, LSU, TEF1, RPB2, TUB, and ACT) and morphological analysis, we identified 21 species previously undiscovered in Korea, including 5 new and 16 unrecorded species. Our findings illustrate the species diversity of marine Hypocreales, highlighting the need for additional research into their ecological functions and potential in biotechnology and medicine.

Abstract
Penicillium griseofulvum CF3 is a fungus isolated from healthy strawberry soil, with the potential to promote the growth of plants and enhance their resistance to diseases. However, the genome sequence of P. griseofulvum CF3 remains unclear. Therefore, we performed the whole-genome CCS sequencing of P. griseofulvum CF3 using the PacBio Sequel II platform. The assembled genome comprised 104 contigs, with a total length of 37,564,657 bp, encoding 13,252 protein-coding genes. Comprehensive functional annotation was performed using various BLAST databases, including the non-redundant (Nr) protein sequence database, Gene Ontology (GO), the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), EuKaryotic Orthologous Groups (KOG), and the Carbohydrate-Active enZymes (CAZy) database, to identify and predict protein-coding genes, tRNAs, and rRNAs. The Antibiotics and Secondary Metabolites Analysis Shell (Antismash) analysis identified 50 biosynthetic gene clusters involved in secondary metabolite production within the P. griseofulvum CF3 genome. The whole-genome sequencing of P. griseofulvum CF3 helps us to understand its potential mechanisms in promoting plant growth and enhancing disease resistance, paving the way for the application of the CF3 strain in sustainable crop production.

Abstract
Valorization of agri-food residues has garnered significant interest for obtaining value-added compounds such as enzymes or bioactive molecules. Rice milling by-products, such as rice bran, have limited commercial value and may pose environmental challenges. Filamentous fungi are recognized for their ability to grow on residues and for their capacity to produce large amounts of metabolites and enzymes of industrial interest. Here, we used filamentous fungi to produce enzyme cocktails from rice bran, which, due to its polysaccharide composition, serves as an ideal substrate for the growth of fungi producing cellulases and xylanases. To this end, sixteen fungal strains were isolated from rice bran and identified at the species level. The species belonged to the genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Mucor. The Aspergillus species displayed the highest efficiency in cellulase and xylanase activities, especially A. niger var. phoenicis and A. amstelodami. A. terreus, A. tritici, and A. montevidensis stood out as xylanolytic isolates, while P. parvofructum exhibited good cellulase activity. A. niger var. phoenicis followed by A. terreus showed the highest specific enzymatic activities of α- and β-D-galactosidase, α-L-arabinofuranosidase, α- and β-D-glucosidase, and β-D-xylosidase. Additionally, proteomic analysis of A. terreus, A. niger var. phoenicis, and P. parvofructum exoproteomes revealed differences in enzyme production for rice bran degradation. A. niger var. phoenicis had the highest levels of xylanases and cellulases, while P. parvofructum excelled in proteases, starch-degrading enzymes, and antifungal proteins. Finally, two Penicillium isolates were notable as producers of up to three different antifungal proteins. Our results demonstrate that filamentous fungi can effectively valorize rice bran by producing enzyme cocktails of industrial interest, along with bioactive peptides, in a cost-efficient manner, aligning with the circular bio-economy framework.

Abstract
Background: During the cultivation of the marine fungus KMM 4668 on solid agar medium, the morphological instability of the strain was observed. As a result of the selection work, five intra-strain variants, named KMM 4711, KMM 4712, KMM 4713, KMM 4714, and KMM 4715, were obtained. Methods: The main objectives of this work were to compare the parent strain and its intra-strain variants using multi-locus phylogenetic analysis and to study the UPLC MS metabolite profiles and cytotoxic activities of their extracts. Results: A study of the original strain, KMM 4668, and its intra-strain variants using multi-locus phylogenetic analysis showed that they are sequence identical and belong to Penicillium antarcticum. UPLC MS metabolite profiling of fungal extracts revealed 20 compounds, including cladosporin-related polyketides, carotane sesquiterpenoids, andrastine meroterpenoids, and alkaloids. It was shown that the intra-strain variants KMM 4713 and KMM 4714 differed most strongly from the others in the increased production of cladosporin-related compounds, carotanoids, and the alkaloid chrysogin. In addition, the influence of fungal extracts on the viability of four mammalian cell lines was investigated. Conclusions: It has been shown that the intra-strain variants of P. antarcticum KMM 4668 may be promising sources of bioactive secondary metabolites.

Abstract

In this study, 162 isolates from P. expansum (n = 31) and 13 other "non-expansum" Penicillium spp., i.e., P. solitum (n = 52), P. roqueforti (n = 32), P. commune (n = 15), P. paneum (n = 9), P. psychrosexuale (n = 8), P. crustosum (n = 5), P. carneum (n = 3), P. palitans (n = 2), along with one isolate each of P. citrinum, P. griseofulvum, P. raistrickii, P. ribium, and P. viridicatum, were collected from multiple packinghouses in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. In vitro sensitivity assays showed similar sensitivities of spores and mycelia across species with the mean EC50 values ranging from 0.01 for P. psychrosexuale (n = 8) to 1.33 μg mL-1 for P. palitans (n = 2), whereas the mean EC50s were 0.03, 0.12, 0.19, and 0.51 μg mL-1 for P. expansum (n = 31), P. paneum (n = 9), P. solitum (n = 52), and P. crustosum (n = 5), respectively. The recommended rate of DIF controlled P. expansum and P. roqueforti isolates but not all isolates of four other Penicillium spp. on Fuji apples after five months at 1.5 °C. The mixture of DIF + fludioxonil (FDL) (AcademyTM) controlled all the dual-sensitive isolates (DIFSFDLS) and DIF single-resistant (DIFR) isolates among the six species tested but not the FDLR and dual DIFRFDLR isolates. Notable polymorphism was detected in the CYP51 gene of the "non-expansum" species with four mutations located at four residues. Although the isolates analyzed in this study had not previously been exposed to DIF, the findings indicate variable sensitivity levels among the Penicillium spp.

Abstract
Palm trees (Arecaceae) are among the most popular ornamental plants worldwide. Despite extensive research on the fungi associated with Arecaceae, the diversity and ecological dynamics of fungi affecting ornamental palms remain poorly studied, although they have significant impact on palm health and economic value. Furthermore, while research on palm fungal diversity has traditionally focused on tropical assemblages, ornamental palms in temperate climates offer a unique opportunity to explore the diversity of palm fungi in non-native habitats. The present study conducted a preliminary assessment of the diversity and ecology of potential phytopathogenic fungi associated with foliar lesions on various ornamental palm host species in Portugal, combining morphological examination, PCR-based genomic fingerprinting, and biodiversity data analysis. The examination of 134 foliar lesions sampled from 100 palm trees resulted in a collection of 2064 palm leaf spotting fungi (PLSF), representing a diverse fungal assemblage of 320 molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs) across 97 genera. The overall fungal community composition revealed a distinct assemblage dominated by Neosetophoma, Alternaria, Phoma, and Cladosporium, with a profusion of infrequent and rare taxa consistent with a logseries distribution. Significantly positive co-occurrence (CO) patterns among prevalent and uncommon taxa suggest potential synergistic interactions enhancing fungal colonisation, persistence, and pathogenicity. The taxonomic structures of the PLSF contrasted markedly from tropical palm fungi, especially in the prevalence of pleosporalean coelomycetes of the Didymellaceae and Phaeosphaeriaceae, including recently introduced or not previously documented genera on Arecaceae. This novel assemblage suggests that climatic constraints shape the structure of palm fungal communities, resulting in distinctive temperate and tropical assemblages. In addition, the fungal assemblages varied significantly across palm host species, with temperate-native palms hosting more diverse, coelomycete-enriched communities. The present findings highlight foliar lesions as hyperdiverse microhabitats harbouring fungal communities with intricate interactions and a complex interplay of climatic, host, and ecological factors. With climate change altering environmental conditions, the identification of fungi thriving in or inhabiting these microhabitats becomes crucial for predicting shifts in pathogen dynamics and mitigating future fungal disease outbreaks. Understanding these complex ecological dynamics is essential for identifying potential phytopathogenic threats and developing effective management strategies for the health and sustainability of ornamental plants.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated the fungal contamination profile of cocoa beans from cocoa-growing regions in Ghana, with particular emphasis on the potential impact of ochratoxigenic Aspergillus species. METHODS A total of 104 fermented and dried cocoa beans were randomly collected from farmers for analysis. Fungal isolation was conducted using potato dextrose agar and malt extract agar media. Species-level identification was performed through macroscopic and microscopic techniques. Ochratoxin A (OTA) quantification and confirmation were carried out using high-performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). RESULTS The investigation revealed 163 fungal isolates representing 14 distinct species across 10 genera. Aspergillus species, including Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus parasiticus, and Aspergillus fumigatus, were predominant. No statistically significant differences in fungal species occurrence were observed among the different cocoa-growing regions. However, certain species exhibited preferential growth on specific media, emphasizing the importance of medium selection in mycological studies. Of the 14 fungal species tested, only Aspergillus niger demonstrated the ability to produce OTA in vitro, as confirmed by LC-MS/MS analysis. CONCLUSION This discovery holds substantial implications for both the cocoa industry and public health, considering that OTA is a potent mycotoxin subject to strict regulatory limits in food commodities. It is crucial to implement enhanced monitoring and control measures to mitigate fungal contamination in cocoa beans, particularly targeting OTA-producing species. The study also highlights the need for improved post-harvest handling practices, optimized storage conditions, and potential biocontrol approaches.

Abstract
Garlic (Allium sativum L.) is an important plant because of its medicinal and gastronomical benefits. The host can be affected by different plant pathogens, among which Penicillium species are one of the most important rot agents of stored garlic and other stored food products. This research resolves the etiology of blue mold rots associated with garlic in Serbia. Penicillium-like isolates were collected (2016 to 2022) from diseased stored garlic bulbs in Serbia and identified using a polyphasic approach. Detailed characterization of the obtained cultures was performed using three solid media, three incubation temperatures, molecular and phylogenetic analyses of four molecular loci (internal transcribed spacer [ITS], beta-tubulin [BenA], calmodulin [CaM], and DNA-dependent RNA polymerase II second largest subunit [RPB2]), and the pathogenicity assay. Five Penicillium species, that is, P. allii, P. glabrum, P. italicum, P. polonicum, and P. psychrotrophicum, were identified and confirmed as postharvest pathogens of garlic. Herein, we report for the first time the pathogenicity of P. psychrotrophicum and P. italicum on garlic. Findings from this study provide insights into the previously unknown diversity of Penicillium fungi responsible for garlic bulb decay in Serbia and will help in the assessment of the phytosanitary status of this crop, as well as the creation and application of effective disease management strategies.

Abstract
Penicillium expansum is a ubiquitous pathogenic fungus that causes blue mold decay of apple fruit postharvest, and another member of the genus, Penicillium chrysogenum, is a well-studied saprophyte valued for antibiotic and small molecule production. While these two fungi have been investigated individually, a recent discovery revealed that P. chrysogenum can block P. expansum-mediated decay of apple fruit. To shed light on this observation, we conducted a comparative genomic, transcriptomic, and metabolomic study of two P. chrysogenum (404 and 413) and two P. expansum (Pe21 and R19) isolates. Global transcriptional and metabolomic outputs were disparate between the species, nearly identical for P. chrysogenum isolates, and different between P. expansum isolates. Further, the two P. chrysogenum genomes revealed secondary metabolite gene clusters that varied widely from P. expansum. This included the absence of an intact patulin gene cluster in P. chrysogenum, which corroborates the metabolomic data regarding its inability to produce patulin. Additionally, a core subset of P. expansum virulence gene homologues were identified in P. chrysogenum and were similarly transcriptionally regulated in vitro. Molecules with varying biological activities, and phytohormone-like compounds were detected for the first time in P. expansum while antibiotics like penicillin G and other biologically active molecules were discovered in P. chrysogenum culture supernatants. Our findings provide a solid omics-based foundation of small molecule production in these two fungal species with implications in postharvest context and expand the current knowledge of the Penicillium-derived chemical repertoire for broader fundamental and practical applications.

Abstract
Bioremediation, involving the strategic use of microorganisms, has proven to be a cost-effective alternative for restoring areas impacted by persistent contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). In this context, the aim of this study was to explore hydrocarbon-degrading microbial consortia by prospecting native species from soils contaminated with blends of diesel and biodiesel (20% biodiesel/80% diesel). After enrichment in a minimal medium containing diesel oil as the sole carbon source and based on 16S rRNA, Calmodulin and β-tubulin gene sequencing, seven fungi and 12 bacteria were identified. The drop collapse test indicated that all fungal and four bacterial strains were capable of producing biosurfactants with a surface tension reduction of ≥20%. Quantitative analysis of extracellular laccase production revealed superior enzyme activity among the bacterial strains, particularly for Stenotrophomonas maltophilia P05R11. Following antagonistic testing, four compatible consortia were formulated. The degradation analysis of PAHs and TPH (C5-C40) present in diesel oil revealed a significantly higher degradation capacity for the consortia compared to isolated strains. The best results were observed for a mixed bacterial-fungal consortium, composed of Trichoderma koningiopsis P05R2, Serratia marcescens P10R19 and Burkholderia cepacia P05R9, with a degradation spectrum of ≥91% for all eleven PAHs analyzed, removing 93.61% of total PAHs, and 93.52% of TPH (C5-C40). Furthermore, this study presents the first report of T. koningiopsis as a candidate for bioremediation of petroleum hydrocarbons.

Abstract
In this study, 162 Penicillium isolates, i.e., 31 P. expansum isolates and 131 isolates from 13 other Penicillium spp. referred to as "non-expansum" were collected from apples and pears from multiple packinghouses in Washington State and Oregon. The sensitivity of the isolates to the postharvest fungicides pyrimethanil (PYR) and fludioxonil (FDL) was assessed in vitro. The mean EC50 value for PYR was 0.75 μg/mL in P. expansum compared to 1.63, 3.47, 6.95, 7.06 and 32.21 μg/mL in P. solitum, P. palitans, P. commune, P. roqueforti and P. carneum, respectively. For FDL, the mean EC50 value was 0.04 μg/mL in P. expansum compared to >0.80, 1.00, 10.40, 13.99, and 158.10 μg/mL in P. commune, P. palitans, P. roqueforti, P. solitum, and P. paneum, respectively. Overall, > 40 % of isolates from five "non-expansum" species showed dual resistance to PYR and FDL versus 9.6 % in P. expansum. The recommended rates of PYR and FDL failed to control isolates of six Penicillium spp. on detached apples after five months at 1.5 °C. Sequencing of the Mdl1, NikA, and Os1 genes from different isolates of eight species revealed a high polymorphism in the Mdl1 and NikA of several "non-expansum" species. Three and two concurrent mutations, in addition to a G409R and S959, were detected in the Mdl1 and NikA, respectively, that potentially confer resistance to PYR and FDL. The high level of resistance and the control failure observed on fruits highlight the potential risk posed by several "non-expansum" Penicillium species to pome fruit packers.

Abstract
Eurotiales fungi are thought to be distributed worldwide but there is a paucity of information about their occurrence on diverse substrates or hosts and at specific localities. Some of the Eurotiales, including Aspergillus and Penicillium species, produce an array of secondary metabolites of use for agricultural, medicinal, and pharmaceutical applications. Here, we carried out a survey of the Eurotiales in South Korea, focusing on soil, freshwater, and plants (dried persimmon fruits and seeds of Perilla frutescens, known commonly as shiso). We obtained 11 species that-based on morphology, physiology, and multi-locus (ITS, BenA, CaM, and RPB2) phylogenetic analyses-include two new species, Aspergillus ullungdoensis sp. nov. and Penicillium jeongsukae sp. nov., and nine species that were known, but previously not described in South Korea, Aspergillus aculeatinus, Aspergillus aurantiacoflavus, Aspergillus croceiaffinis, Aspergillus pseudoviridinutans, Aspergillus uvarum, Penicillium ferraniaense, Penicillium glaucoroseum, Penicillium sajarovii, and one, Penicillium charlesii, that was isolated from previously unknown host, woodlouse (Porcellio scaber). We believe that biodiversity survey and identifying new species can contribute to set a baseline for future changes in the context of humanitarian crises such as climate change.

Abstract
Pistachio (Pistacia vera L.) is an economically important tree nut. Due to its nutritional properties and health benefits, it is considered a healthy food and thus widely consumed worldwide. However, fungal contamination of the commodities has received considerable attention because of possible contamination by toxigenic fungi, important source of mycotoxins, resulting from secondary metabolism and hazards to health consumer. Members of the genus Aspergillus, mainly Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus niger, are reported as occurring most frequently on pistachio nuts, because able to grow in the presence of low amounts of water and to produce mycotoxins (aflatoxins and ochratoxins), that are well known for their harmful health effects on humans. Monitoring the contaminating fungal species is particularly worthy of note also in climate change scenario, allowing to notice changes in fungal population composition through the time. This study aimed to contribute to collect data about fungal population and mycotoxins occurred in pistachio samples collected in Turkey: prevalence of 2 species, A. flavus and Aspergillus tubingensis, was assessed. The A. flavus strains consisted of a mixed population of aflatoxin producers and non-producing strains in vitro, with evidence of a new genotype in gene cluster within strains of aflatoxin non-producing chemotype.

Abstract
The study of the Brazilian cave mycobiota has revealed a rich but highly diverse assemblage of fungi, with Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Talaromyces being the most frequently reported genera. The present study investigated the airborne fungi and fungi obtained from the bodies of bats, guano, and the soil/sediment from the caves Urubu (in the Atlantic Forest) and Furna Feia (in the Caatinga dryland forest) in the Northeast region of Brazil. Fungal strains were identified based on morphological features and multilocus phylogenetic analyses of ITS, beta-tubulin (BenA), calmodulin (CaM), and RNA polymerase II second largest subunit (RPB2) sequences. A total of 86 isolates were obtained, representing Aspergillus (34), Penicillium (20), Talaromyces (2), and 30 isolates belonging to other genera that will be reported on elsewhere. These isolates were identified as 18 Aspergillus, nine Penicillium, and one Talaromyces species. Eight of the species identified are reported for the first time from a cave environment. Four species showed unique morphological features and phylogenetic relationships, and are newly described. These include two new species of Aspergillus (A. alvaroi sp. nov. and A. guanovespertilionum sp. nov.), one of Penicillium (P. cecavii sp. nov.), and one of Talaromyces (T. potiguarorum sp. nov.). Our study increases the awareness and known richness of the Brazilian and global fungal diversity found in caves. Abstract
For maize, a staple food in South Africa, there is a lack of comprehensive knowledge on the mycotoxin-producing fungal diversity. In this study, a fungal community profile was established using culture-dependent methods for 56 maize seed samples that were also analysed for 13 mycotoxins. The fungal isolates were identified by morphology and DNA sequencing. A total of 723 fungal isolates from 21 genera and 99 species were obtained and characterised. Fusarium was the most common genus (isolated from 52 samples), followed by Cladosporium (n = 45), Aspergillus (n = 41), Talaromyces (n = 40), and Penicillium (n = 38). Fusarium communities were dominated by the Fusarium fujikuroi species complex, which includes species such as Fusarium verticillioides and Fusarium temperatum, while Fusarium awaxy and Fusarium mirum are reported here for the first time from South Africa. As for the deoxynivalenol (DON) producing species, only Fusarium boothii and Fusarium graminearum were isolated to a lesser extent. DON (n = 37), fumonisins (FUM) (n = 32), and zearalenone (ZEA) (n = 6) were detected. The presence of a particular species did not guarantee the presence of the corresponding mycotoxins, while the inverse was also true. The occurrence of DON and/or FUM in South African maize remains a health concern, so continuous monitoring of both fungal species and their mycotoxins is important.

Abstract
Microbial aerosol contamination is a common problem in poultry farms, posing potential health risks to poultry and their caretakers. Exploring the distribution and diversity of the microbial community in poultry farm aerosols is crucial for effective mitigation strategies. The composition of bacterial and fungal aerosols is poorly understood, particularly the prevalence of potential pathogenic microorganisms in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in various types of poultry houses. In this study, 27 PM2.5 samples were collected from 5 chicken houses and 4 duck houses in Shandong Province, China. Species-level diversity of bacterial and fungal components in PM2.5 samples was determined using advanced single-molecule real-time sequencing (SMRT) technology, based on the 16S and internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS) ribosomal genes. Microbial diversity and community composition varied significantly across the different poultry house. Notably, duck houses had higher concentrations (p < 0.01) of PM2.5 (92.8-143.1 μg/m3) than chicken houses (42.0-56.4 μg/m3). Furthermore, microbial variation in PM2.5 samples was associated with the type of poultry facility. The predominant pathogenic microorganisms included Aspergillus sydowii, Penicillium sp., Aspergillus insolitus, Cladosporium sp., Aspergillus sp., Aspergillus pseudoglaucus, Cladosporium sp. C4092-2-PD1, and Colletotrichum sp., all of which were classified as second category of pathogens. Aspergillus sydowii and Penicillium sp. were the dominant species in chicken houses, while Cladosporium sp., Aspergillus sp., and Aspergillus pseudoglaucus were the dominant species identified in duck houses. To our knowledge, this study is the first to investigate bacterial and fungal diversity in PM2.5 samples collected from various types of poultry houses. These findings advance our understanding of poultry environmental microbiology and have important implications for safeguarding the health of both poultry and their caretakers.

Abstract
The Amazon rainforest is the world's most diverse ecosystem, full of fauna and flora. Among the trees that make up the forest are the rubber trees of the genus Hevea (H. brasiliensis and H. guianensis), which stand out for the industrial use of latex. It was previously shown that endophytic fungi colonize the leaves, stems, and roots of Hevea spp. In this study, 47 Penicillium spp. and three Talaromyces spp. isolates were analyzed using specific DNA barcodes: internal transcribed spacers region (ITS), β-tubulin (BenA), calmodulin (CaM), and the DNA-dependent RNA polymerase II second largest subunit (RPB2) genes and additionally, for species delimitation, the genealogical concordance phylogenetic species recognition (GCPSR) criteria were applied. The phylogenetic analyses placed the Penicillium isolates into four sections Lanata-Divaricata, Sclerotiora, Citrina, and Fasciculata. The morphological and molecular characteristics resulted in the discovery of five new species (P. heveae sp. nov., P. acrean sp. nov., P. aquiri sp. nov., P. amazonense sp. nov., and P. pseudomellis sp. nov.). The five new species were also compared to closely related species, with observations on morphologically distinguishing features and colony appearances. Bayesian inference and maximum likelihood analysis have supported the placement of P. heveae sp. nov. as a sister group to P. globosum; P. acrean sp. nov. and P. aquiri sp. nov. as sister groups to P. sumatrense; P. amazonense sp. nov. closely related to isolates of P. rolfsii, and P. pseudomellis sp. nov. closely related to P. mellis. The study of endophytic Penicillium species of rubber trees and the description of five new taxa of Penicillium sect. Citrina, Lanata-Divaricata, and Sclerotiora as endophytes add to the fungal biodiversity knowledge in native rubber trees. Reports of fungi in native tropical plants may reveal taxonomic novelties, potential pathogen control agents, and producers of molecular bioactive compounds of medical and agronomic interest.

Abstract
Asbestos poses a substantial environmental health risk, and biological treatment offers a promising approach to mitigate its impact by altering its chemical composition. However, the dynamics of microbial co-inoculation in asbestos bioremediation remain poorly understood. This study investigates the effect of microbial single cultures and co-cultures on modifying crocidolite and chrysotile fibers, focusing on the extraction of iron and magnesium. Seventy bacterial and eighty-three fungal strains were isolated from five diverse sites, characterized phylogenetically using the 16S rRNA gene and ITS region, respectively, and assessed for siderophore and organic acid production. Most bacterial strains were identified as Pseudomonas, while Penicillium predominated among fungal strains. Ten bacterial and 25 fungal strains were found to produce both organic compounds. Four microbial co-cultures (one bacterium-bacterium, two fungus-bacterium, and one fungus-fungus) exhibiting synergistic effects in plate assays, alongside their respective single cultures, were incubated with crocidolite and chrysotile. ICP-OES analysis revealed that in crocidolite, the co-culture HRF19-HRB12 removed more iron than their single cultures, while Penicillium TPF36 showed the highest iron removal. The co-culture of two Pseudomonas strains (HRB12-RB5) exhibited the highest magnesium concentration in the supernatant. In chrysotile, the co-culture HRB12-RB5 removed more iron than their individual cultures, with Penicillium TFSF27 exhibiting the highest iron concentration in the solution. Penicillium TFSF27 and the co-culture TFSF27-TPF36 demonstrated the highest magnesium removal. SEM-XRMA analysis showed a significant reduction in iron and magnesium content, confirming elemental extraction from the fibers' structure. This study significantly broadens the range of microbial strains capable of modifying asbestos fibers and underscores the potential of microbial co-cultures in asbestos remediation.

Abstract
Five unreported ketone compounds-penicrustones A-E-were isolated from the solid fermentation of the endophytic fungus Penicillium crustosum. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis. Their absolute configurations were determined via ECD calculations and single-crystal X-Ray crystallography. All compounds were evaluated for their antimicrobial and antitumor activities. Compounds 4 and 5 showed moderate inhibitory effects on Micrococcus luteus, with MIC values of 12.5 and 25.0 μg/mL, respectively. In addition to this, compound 4 also showed cytotoxicity on tumor cell lines KTC-1 and Hela, with IC50 values of 4.28 and 4.64 μg/mL, respectively.

Abstract
This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the classification, biology, and management of Drosophila species (Diptera: Drosophilidae) with a focus on entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) as a biocontrol strategy. Drosophila species, particularly Drosophila suzukii, and Drosophila melanogaster have emerged as significant pests in various agricultural systems, causing extensive damage to fruit crops. Understanding their taxonomic classification and biological traits is crucial for developing effective management strategies. This review delves into the life cycle, behavior, and ecological interactions of Drosophila species, highlighting the challenges posed by their rapid reproduction and adaptability. The review further explores the potential of EPF as an eco-friendly alternative to chemical pesticides. The mode of action of EPF against Drosophila species is examined, including spore adhesion, germination, and penetration of the insect cuticle, leading to host death. Factors influencing the efficacy of EPF, such as environmental conditions, fungal virulence, and host specificity, are discussed in detail. By synthesizing current research, this review aims to provide valuable insights into the application of EPF and to identify future research directions for enhancing the effectiveness of EPF-based control measures against Drosophila species.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Biotransformation of steroid compounds into therapeutic products using microorganisms offers an eco-friendly and economically sustainable approach to the pharmaceutical industry rather than a chemical synthesis way. The biotransformation efficiency of progesterone into the anticancer compound testololactone using Penicillium chrysogenum Ras3009 has been investigated. Besides, maximization of testololactone formation was achieved by studying the kinetic modelling and impact of some fermentation conditions on the biotransformation process. RESULTS The fungal strain Ras3009 was selected among twelve fungal strains as the most runner for the transformation of 81.18% of progesterone into testololactone. Ras3009 was identified phenotypically and genotypically as Penicillium chrysogenum, its 18 S rRNA nucleotide sequence was deposited in the GenBank database by the accession number OR480104. Studying the impact of fermentation conditions on biotransformation efficiency indicated a positive correlation between substrate concentration and testololactone formation until reaching the maximum velocity vmax. Kinetic studies revealed that vmax was [Formula: see text] gL- 1hr- 1 with high accuracy, giving R2 of 0.977. The progesterone transformation efficiency generally increased with time, reaching a maximum of 100% at 42 h with testololactone yield (Ypt/s) 0.8700 mg/mg. Moreover, the study indicated that the enzymatic conversion by P. chrysogenum Ras3009 showed high affinity to the substrate, intracellularly expressed, and released during cell disruption, leading to higher efficiency when using whole microbial cell extract. CONCLUSIONS Fungi can be promising biocatalysts for steroid transformation into valuable chemicals and pharmaceutical compounds. The study revealed that the new fungal isolate P. chrysogenum Ras3009 possesses a great catalytic ability to convert progesterone into testololactone. Kinetic modelling analysis and optimization of the fermentation conditions lead to higher transformation efficiency and provide a better understanding of the transformation processes.

Abstract
With the depletion of non-renewable fossil fuels, there has been an increasing emphasis on renewable biomass. Penicillium oxalicum is notable for its exceptional capacity to secrete a diverse array of enzymes that degrade plant polysaccharides into monosaccharides. These valuable monosaccharides can be harnessed in the production of bioethanol and other sustainable forms of energy. By enhancing the production of plant-polysaccharide-degrading enzymes (PPDEs) in P. oxalicum, we can optimize the utilization of plant biomass. This paper presents recent advances in augmenting PPDE expression in P. oxalicum through genetic engineering strategies involving protoplast preparation, transformation, and factors influencing PPDE gene expression.

Abstract
Bioinformatic analysis revealed that the genomes of ubiquitous Penicillium spp. might carry dozens of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs), yet many clusters have remained uncharacterized. In this study, a detailed investigation of co-culture fermentation including the basidiomycete Armillaria mellea CPCC 400891 and the P. brasilianum CGMCC 3.4402 enabled the isolation of five new compounds including two bisabolene-type sesquiterpenes (arpenibisabolanes A and B), two carotane-type sesquiterpenes (arpenicarotanes A and B), and one polyketide (arpenichorismite A) along with seven known compounds. The assignments of their structures were deduced by the extensive analyses of detailed spectroscopic data, electronic circular dichroism spectra, together with delimitation of the biogenesis. Most new compounds were not detected in monocultures under the same fermentation conditions. Arpenibisabolane A represents the first example of a 6/5-fused bicyclic bisabolene. The bioassay of these five new compounds exhibited no cytotoxic activities in vitro against three human cancer cell lines (A549, MCF-7, and HepG2). Moreover, sequence alignments and bioinformatic analysis to other metabolic pathways, two BGCs including Pb-bis and Pb-car, responsible for generating sesquiterpenoids from co-culture were identified, respectively. Furthermore, based on the chemical structures and deduced gene functions of the two clusters, a hypothetic metabolic pathway for biosynthesizing induced sesquiterpenoids was proposed. These results demonstrated that the co-culture approach would facilitate bioprospecting for new metabolites even from the well-studied microbes. Our findings would provide opportunities for further understanding of the biosynthesis of intriguing sesquiterpenoids via metabolic engineering strategies. Abstract
In this study, nine endophytic fungi capable of producing multiple phenolic compounds were screened and identified from 152 fungi isolated from pigeon pea in a natural habitat (Honghe, Yunnan Province, China). Talaromyces neorugulosus R-209 exhibited the highest potential for phenolic compound production. L-phenylalanine feeding was used to enhance phenolic compound production in T. neorugulosus R-209 cultures. Under the optimal feeding conditions (l-phenylalanine dose of 0.16 g/L and feeding phase of 6 days), the yields of genistein, apigenin, biochanin A, and cajaninstilbene acid increased by 15.59-fold, 7.20-fold, 25.93-fold, and 10.30-fold over control, respectively. T. neorugulosus R-209 fed with l-phenylalanine was found to be stable in the production of phenolic compounds during ten successive subcultures. Moreover, bioactivities of extracts of T. neorugulosus R-209 cultures were significantly increased by l-phenylalanine feeding. Overall, l-phenylalanine feeding strategy made T. neorugulosus R-209 more attractive as a promising alternative source for the production of health-beneficial phenolic compounds in the nutraceutical/medicinal industries.

Abstract
Penicillium spp. produce a great variety of secondary metabolites, including several mycotoxins, on food substrates. Chestnuts represent a favorable substrate for Penicillium spp. development. In this study, the genomes of ten Penicillium species, virulent on chestnuts, were sequenced and annotated: P. bialowiezense. P. pancosmium, P. manginii, P. discolor, P. crustosum, P. palitans, P. viridicatum, P. glandicola, P. taurinense and P. terrarumae. Assembly size ranges from 27.5 to 36.8 Mb and the number of encoded genes ranges from 9,867 to 12,520. The total number of predicted biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) in the ten species is 551. The most represented families of BGCs are non ribosomal peptide synthase (191) and polyketide synthase (175), followed by terpene synthases (87). Genome-wide collections of gene phylogenies (phylomes) were reconstructed for each of the newly sequenced Penicillium species allowing for the prediction of orthologous relationships among our species, as well as other 20 annotated Penicillium species available in the public domain. We investigated in silico the presence of BGCs for 10 secondary metabolites, including 5 mycotoxins, whose production was validated in vivo through chemical analyses. Among the clusters present in this set of species we found andrastin A and its related cluster atlantinone A, mycophenolic acid, patulin, penitrem A and the cluster responsible for the synthesis of roquefortine C/glandicoline A/glandicoline B/meleagrin. We confirmed the presence of these clusters in several of the Penicillium species conforming our dataset and verified their capacity to synthesize them in a chestnut-based medium with chemical analysis. Interestingly, we identified mycotoxin clusters in some species for the first time, such as the andrastin A cluster in P. flavigenum and P. taurinense, and the roquefortine C cluster in P. nalgiovense and P. taurinense. Chestnuts proved to be an optimal substrate for species of Penicillium with different mycotoxigenic potential, opening the door to risks related to the occurrence of multiple mycotoxins in the same food matrix.

Abstract
Plant endophytic microbial communities consist of many latent plant pathogens and, also, many pathogen-related species with reduced virulence. Though with a long history of co-evolution, the diversity and composition of the endophytic mycobiota, especially the pathogen-related fungal groups, has been under-investigated in Citrus (C.). Based on the amplicon sequencing of fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS), the leaf endophytic mycobiota were profiled on citrus varieties from different citrus-producing regions. The pomelo variety shared significantly distinctive leaf mycobiota when compared to the mandarin and sweet orange; these conform to their host genetic relationships. In addition, a data set of 241 citrus-related fungi, including 171 (71%) pathogens and potential pathogens, was summarized from previous studies. Under the criteria of local BLAST (covered ITS nucleotide ≥ 150 bp, sequence identity ≥ 99%), a total of 935 fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were assigned to 62 pathogen-related fungal groups, representing 14.9% of the relative abundance in the whole community. Of which, the top groups consisted of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (mean relative abundance, 4.3%), Co. citricola and Co. karstii (2.7%), Zasmidium citri-griseum (2.4%), and Z. fructigenum (1.4%). At the genus level, the ratio of the pathogen-related fungal groups in 64% of fungal genera (16 out of 25) exceeded 50%, which are the solely or mainly occurring fungi of their genus in citrus. Our study suggests that the leaf endophytic compartment may be an important place for the growth of latent pathogens.

Abstract
Endophytic fungi, residing within plants without causing disease, are known for their ability to produce bioactive metabolites with diverse properties such as antibacterial, antioxidant, and antifungal activities, while also influencing plant defense mechanisms. In this study, five novel endophytic fungi species were isolated from the leaves of Psychotria poeppigiana Müll. Arg., a plant from the Rubiaceae family, collected in the tropical Amazon region of Bolivia. The endophytic fungi were identified as a Neopestalotiopsis sp., three Penicillium sp., and an Aspergillus sp. through 18S ribosomal RNA sequencing and NCBI-BLAST analysis. Chemical profiling revealed that their extracts obtained by ethyl acetate contained terpenes, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds. In a bioautography study, the terpenes showed high antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli. Notably, extracts from the three Penicillium species exhibited potent antibacterial activity, with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranging from 62.5 to 2000 µg/mL against all three pathogens: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis (both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria). These findings highlight the potential of these endophytic fungi, especially Penicillium species as valuable sources of secondary metabolites with significant antibacterial activities, suggesting promising applications in medicine, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and environmental technologies.

Abstract
Forensic microbiology is a relatively new area of forensic sciences. It considers the potential of microorganisms to be used in criminal investigations. As most studies involve the role of bacteria in fields like post-mortem interval estimation, personal identification or geolocation, the data on the role of fungi is comparatively scarce. Forensic mycology involves the application of fungi and their structures in forensic cases. The aim of this review is the evaluation of the current state of knowledge on fungi associated with human cadavers and their possible role in estimating the time since death. In accordance with the available reports, we focused on the relation between microscopic fungi isolated from human corpses and the cadaver condition e.g., the stage of decomposition. We also emphasised the contrast between the reported methodologies and attempted to standardise research methods in forensic mycology from sample collection to its storage, mycological analysis and identification of the obtained fungal cultures. Moreover, the potential usage of microscopic fungi in criminal cases was discussed based on various case reports.

Abstract
The Penicillium genus exhibits a broad global distribution and holds substantial economic value in sectors including agriculture, industry, and medicine. Particularly in agriculture, Penicillium species significantly impact plants, causing diseases and contamination that adversely affect crop yields and quality. Timely detection of Penicillium species is crucial for controlling disease and preventing mycotoxins from entering the food chain. To tackle this issue, we implement a novel species identification approach called Analysis of whole GEnome (AGE). Here, we initially applied bioinformatics analysis to construct specific target sequence libraries from the whole genomes of seven Penicillium species with significant economic impact: P. canescens, P. citrinum, P. oxalicum, P. polonicum, P. paneum, P. rubens, and P. roqueforti. We successfully identified seven Penicillium species using the target we screened combined with Sanger sequencing and CRISPR-Cas12a technologies. Notably, based on CRISPR-Cas12a technology, AGE can achieve rapid and accurate identification of genomic DNA samples at a concentration as low as 0.01 ng/µL within 30 min. This method features high sensitivity and portability, making it suitable for on-site detection. This robust molecular approach provides precise fungal species identification with broad implications for agricultural control, industrial production, clinical diagnostics, and food safety.

Abstract
The debates over the requirement of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICNafp) for a viable specimen to represent the name-bearing type material for a species or infraspecific taxon have a long history. Taxonomy of fungi commonly studied as living cultures exemplified by yeasts and moulds, strongly depend on viable reference material. The availability of viable cultures is also particularly useful for several groups of filamentous and dimorphic fungi. While the preservation of metabolically inactive cultures is permitted and recommended by the ICNafp, there is room for improvement. Below, we review the history and current status of cultures as the name-bearing type material under the Code. We also present a roadmap with tasks to be achieved in order to establish a stable nomenclatural system that properly manages taxa typified by viable specimens. Furthermore, we propose setting up rules and defining the nomenclatural status of ex-type cultures under Chapter F, the section of the ICNafp that includes provisions specific to names of fungi.

Abstract
Penicillium digitatum is a common plant pathogen that causes citrus rot, which is extremely rare in humans. We report a case of a 66-year-old man with a history of consuming large amounts of citrus fruits, smoking for 30 years, and a history of emphysema. He had experienced intermittent coughing with sputum for more than 10 years and was admitted to the hospital due to worsening of symptoms over the past month. Despite antibiotic treatment, his condition did not improve. Subsequently, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was detected by metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), which showed the presence of P. digitatum. The fungal culture of BALF also indicated the presence of the Penicillium genus. The diagnosis was lung infection caused by P. digitatum, and the patient was treated with itraconazole. The lung infection was controlled. This is the third reported case of invasive pulmonary fungal infection caused by P. digitatum worldwide at the genus level, and the first reported case in China. Although human infections caused by P. digitatum are rare, as an emerging opportunistic pathogen, the detection of this fungus in immunocompromised patients should still be clinically important.

Abstract
Cordyceps cicadae is recognized for its medicinal properties, attributed to bioactive constituents like polysaccharides and adenosine, which have been shown to improve kidney and liver functions and possess anti-tumor properties. Rho GTPase activating proteins (Rho GAPs) serve as inhibitory regulators of Rho GTPases in eukaryotic cells by accelerating the GTP hydrolysis of Rho GTPases, leading to their inactivation. In this study, we explored the function of the CcRga8 gene in C. cicadae, which encodes a Rho-type GTPase activating protein. Our study found that the knockout of CcRga8 resulted in a decrease in polysaccharide levels and an increase in adenosine concentration. Furthermore, the mutants exhibited altered spore yield and morphology, fruiting body development, decreased infectivity, reduced resistance to hyperosmotic stress, oxidative conditions, and cell wall inhibitors. These findings suggest that CcRga8 plays a crucial role in the development, stress response, and bioactive compound production of C. cicadae.

Abstract
The global diversity of fungi has been estimated between 2 to 11 million species, of which only about 155 000 have been named. Most fungi are invisible to the unaided eye, but they represent a major component of biodiversity on our planet, and play essential ecological roles, supporting life as we know it. Although approximately 20 000 fungal genera are presently recognised, the ecology of most remains undetermined. Despite all this diversity, the mycological community actively researches some fungal genera more commonly than others. This poses an interesting question: why have some fungal genera impacted mycology and related fields more than others? To address this issue, we conducted a bibliometric analysis to identify the top 100 most cited fungal genera. A thorough database search of the Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PubMed was performed to establish which genera are most cited. The most cited 10 genera are Saccharomyces, Candida, Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium, Trichoderma, Botrytis, Pichia, Cryptococcus and Alternaria. Case studies are presented for the 100 most cited genera with general background, notes on their ecology and economic significance and important research advances. This paper provides a historic overview of scientific research of these genera and the prospect for further research. Abstract
Ectomycorrhizal inoculum has emerged as a critical tool for forest restoration, especially under challenging climate change conditions. The inoculation of selective ectomycorrhizal fungi can enhance seedling survival and subsequent growth in the field. This study optimized the liquid media for mycelial growth of Astraeus odoratus strain K1 and the sodium alginate solution composition for enhanced mycelial viability after entrapment. Using Modified Melin-Norkrans as the optimal media for mycelial cultivation and 2% sodium alginate supplemented with Czapek medium, 0.25% activated charcoal, 5% sucrose, and 5% sorbitol in the alginate solution yielded the highest viability of A. odoratus mycelia. Preservation in distilled water and 10% glycerol at 25 °C for 60 days proved to be the most effective storage condition for the alginate beads. Both fresh and preserved alginate beads were tested for colonizing on Hopea odorata Roxb. seedlings, showing successful colonization and ectomycorrhizal root formation, with over 49% colonization. This study fills a crucial gap in biotechnology and ectomycorrhizal inoculum, paving the way for more effective and sustainable forest restoration practices.

Abstract
During a survey of culturable microfungi from the bark of sugar maple (Acer saccharum), Atrocalyx glutinosus and Nigrograna rubescens, two novel species of Pleosporales (Dothideomycetes) were isolated from several locations in eastern Ontario, Canada. Formal species descriptions are presented based on unique colony phenotypes and micromorphological characteristics and supported using multi-locus molecular phylogenetic comparisons with similar species. Both A. glutinosus and N. rubescens produce pycnidial asexual morphs in culture. As their names imply, under specific culture conditions, A. glutinosus excretes large amounts of the glutinous polysaccharide pullulan and N. rubescens produces a dark red naphthoquinone pigment that diffuses in the culture medium. Abstract
The aim of this paper was to evaluate the degree of mycological air contamination and determine the taxonomic diversity of airborne fungi residing in the air of 20 different animal facilities in a zoological garden. The concentrations of fungi in the zoological garden were measured using a MAS-100 air sampler. The collected microorganisms were identified using the combination of molecular and morphological methods. The fungal concentration ranged from 50 to 3.65 × 104 CFU/m3 during the whole study. The quantitative analysis of the fungal aerosol showed that the obtained concentration values were lower than the recommended permissible limits (5 × 104 CFU/m3 for fungi). Environmental factors, including temperature and relative humidity, exerted a varying effect on the presence and concentration of isolated fungi. Relative humidity was shown to correlate positively with the concentration of fungal spores in the air of the facilities studied (rho = 0.57, p < 0.0021). In parallel, no significant correlation was established between temperature and total fungal concentration (rho = - 0.1, p < 0.2263). A total of 112 fungal strains belonging to 50 species and 10 genera were isolated. Penicillium was the dominant genera, including 58.9% of total fungal strains, followed by Aspergillus 25.89%, Cladosporium 3.57%, Talaromyces 3.57%, Mucor 1.78%, Schizophyllum 1.78%, Syncephalastrum 0.89%, Alternaria 0.89%, Absidia 0.89%, and Cunninghamella 0.89%. Our preliminary studies provide basic information about the fungal concentrations, as well as their biodiversity in zoological garden. Further studies are needed to generate additional data from long-term sampling in order to increase our understanding of airborne fungal composition in the zoological garden.

Abstract
Patulin is a mycotoxin produced by several species of Penicillium sp., Aspergillus sp., and Byssochlamys sp. on apples and pears. Most studies have been focused on Penicillium expansum, a common postharvest pathogen, but little is known about the characteristics of Penicillium paneum. In the present study, we evaluated the effects of temperature, pH, and relative humidity (RH) on the growth of P. paneum OM1, which was isolated from pears, and its patulin production. The fungal strain showed the highest growth rate at 25 °C and pH 4.5 on pear puree agar medium (PPAM) under 97 % RH, while it produced the highest amount of patulin at 20 °C and pH 4.5 on PPAM under 97 % RH. Moreover, RT-qPCR analysis of relative expression levels of 5 patulin biosynthetic genes (patA, patE, patK, patL, and patN) in P. paneum OM1 exhibited that the expression of the 4 patulin biosynthetic genes except patL was up-regulated in YES medium (patulin conducive), while it was not in PDB medium (patulin non-conducive). Our data demonstrated that the 3 major environmental parameters had significant impact on the growth of P. paneum OM1 and its patulin production. These results could be exploited to prevent patulin contamination by P. paneum OM1 during pear storage.

Abstract
Wooden Cultural Heritage (WCH) represents a significant portion of the world's historical and artistic heritage, consisting of immovable and movable artefacts. Despite the expertise developed since ancient times to enhance its durability, wooden artefacts are inevitably prone to degradation. Fungi play a pivotal role in the deterioration of WCH in terrestrial ecosystems, accelerating its decay and leading to alterations in color and strength. Reviewing the literature of the last 25 years, we aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of fungal diversity affecting WCH, the biochemical processes involved in wood decay, and the diagnostic tools available for fungal identification and damage evaluation. Climatic conditions influence the occurrence of fungal species in threatened WCH, characterized by a prevalence of wood-rot fungi (e.g., Serpula lacrymans, Coniophora puteana) in architectural heritage in temperate and continental climates and Ascomycota in indoor and harsh environments. More efforts are needed to address the knowledge fragmentation concerning biodiversity, the biology of the fungi involved, and succession in the degradative process, which is frequently centered solely on the main actors. Multidisciplinary collaboration among engineers, restorers, and life sciences scientists is vital for tackling the challenges posed by climate change with increased awareness. Traditional microbiology and culture collections are fundamental in laying solid foundations for a more comprehensive interpretation of big data.

Abstract
Wheat is one of the essential crops for the human and animal nutrition, however, contamination with aflatoxigenic fungi, due to the improper storage conditions and high humidity, was the main global threats. So, preventing the growth of aflatoxigenic fungi in stored wheat grains, by using different essential oils was the main objective of this work. Aspergillus flavus EFBL-MU12 PP087400, EFBL-MU23 PP087401 and EFBL-MU36 PP087403 isolates were the most potent aflatoxins producers inhabiting wheat grains. The effect of storage conditions of wheat grains "humidity, temperature, incubation period, and pH" on growth of A. flavus, was assessed by the response surface methodology using Plackett-Burman design and FCCD. The highest yield of aflatoxins EFBL-MU12 B1 and B2 by A. flavus grown on wheat grains were 145.3 and 7.6 μg/kg, respectively, at incubation temperature 35°C, 16% moisture contents, initial pH 5.0, and incubated for 14 days. The tested oils had a powerful antifungal activity for the growth and aflatoxins production by A. flavus in a concentration-dependent manner. Among these oils, cinnamon oil had the highest fungicidal activity for A. flavus at 0.125%, with about 85-90 % reduction to the aflatoxins B1 and B2, conidial pigmentation and chitin contents on wheat grains. From the SEM analysis, cinnamon oils had the most deleterious effect on A. flavus with morphological aberrations to the conidial heads, vegetative mycelia, alteration in conidiophores identity, hyphae shrank, and winding. To emphasize the effect of the essential oils on the aflatoxins producing potency of A. flavus, the molecular expression of the aflatoxins biosynthetic genes was estimated by RT-qPCR. The molecular expression of nor-1, afLR, pKsA and afLJ genes was suppressed by 94-96%, due to cinnamon oil at 0.062% compared to the control. Conclusively, from the results, cinnamon oils followed by the peppermint oils displayed the most fungicidal activity for the growth and aflatoxins production by A. flavus grown on wheat grains.

Abstract
Banana (Musa acuminata) is the most important crop in the Canary Islands (38.9% of the total cultivated area). The main pathogen affecting this crop is the soil fungal Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense subtropical race 4 (Foc-STR4), for which there is no effective control method under field conditions. Therefore, the use of native biological control agents may be an effective and sustainable alternative. This study aims to: (i) investigate the diversity and distribution of Trichoderma species in the rhizosphere of different banana agroecosystems affected by Foc-STR4 in Tenerife (the island with the greatest bioclimatic diversity and cultivated area), (ii) develop and preserve a culture collection of native Trichoderma species, and (iii) evaluate the influence of soil chemical properties on the Trichoderma community. A total of 131 Trichoderma isolates were obtained from 84 soil samples collected from 14 farms located in different agroecosystems on the northern (cooler and wetter) and southern (warmer and drier) slopes of Tenerife. Ten Trichoderma species, including T. afroharzianum, T. asperellum, T. atrobrunneum, T. gamsii, T. guizhouense, T. hamatum, T. harzianum, T. hirsutum, T. longibrachiatum, and T. virens, and two putative novel species, named T. aff. harzianum and T. aff. hortense, were identified based on the tef1-α sequences. Trichoderma virens (35.89% relative abundance) and T. aff. harzianum (27.48%) were the most abundant and dominant species on both slopes, while other species were observed only on one slope (north or south). Biodiversity indices (Margalef, Shannon, Simpson, and Pielou) showed that species diversity and evenness were highest in the healthy soils of the northern slope. The Spearman analysis showed significant correlations between Trichoderma species and soil chemistry parameters (mainly with phosphorus and soil pH). To the best of our knowledge, six species are reported for the first time in the Canary Islands (T. afroharzianum, T. asperellum, T. atrobrunneum, T. guizhouense, T. hamatum, T. hirsutum) and in the rhizosphere of banana soils (T. afroharzianum, T. atrobrunneum, T. gamsii, T. guizhouense, T. hirsutum, T. virens). This study provides essential information on the diversity/distribution of native Trichoderma species for the benefit of future applications in the control of Foc-STR4.

Abstract
Penicillium species are ubiquitous in the environment and are of substantial importance, especially in industrial and medical aspects. During our investigation of the biodiversity of Penicillium, three new species were discovered in soil samples collected from East and Northeast China. They were determined as new to science based on morphological comparisons and phylogenetic analyses, and were found to belong to the subgenus Penicillium section Robsamsonia and subgenus Aspergilloides sections Aspergilloides and Citrina. Descriptions and illustrations of these species are provided, and their geographic distributions are also discussed.

Abstract
Soil structure and aggregation are crucial for soil functionality, particularly under drought conditions. Saprobic soil fungi, known for their resilience in low moisture conditions, are recognized for their influence on soil aggregate dynamics. In this study, we explored the potential of fungal amendments to enhance soil aggregation and hydrological properties across different moisture regimes. We used a selection of 29 fungal isolates, recovered from soils treated under drought conditions and varying in colony density and growth rate, for single-strain inoculation into sterilized soil microcosms under either low or high moisture (≤-0.96 and -0.03 MPa, respectively). After 8 weeks, we assessed soil aggregate formation and stability, along with soil properties such as soil water content, water hydrophobicity, sorptivity, total fungal biomass and water potential. Our findings indicate that fungal inoculation altered soil hydrological properties and improved soil aggregation, with effects varying based on the fungal strains and soil moisture levels. We found a positive correlation between fungal biomass and enhanced soil aggregate formation and stabilization, achieved by connecting soil particles via hyphae and modifying soil aggregate sorptivity. The improvement in soil water potential was observed only when the initial moisture level was not critical for fungal activity. Overall, our results highlight the potential of using fungal inoculation to improve the structure of agricultural soil under drought conditions, thereby introducing new possibilities for soil management in the context of climate change.
