Abstract
Proteinaceous wastewater contains various proteins, which can be valorized to biobased volatile fatty acids (VFAs), important substrates for the synthesis of biodegradable plastics, biodiesel, bioelectricity, etc., but the influence of protein type on VFAs has never been documented. It was found that among the five proteinaceous wastewater proteins investigated, ovalbumin and casein produced the most and the least VFAs, respectively. The mechanism investigation shows that proteins with higher VFAs production had higher functional microorganism abundance and key enzyme activity in the reaction system due to their more enzyme cleavage sites and looser secondary structure, which made it easier for more hydrolase to bind, causing more protein hydrolysis. Also, metaproteomics and amino acid composition analyses revealed that the hydrolysates of proteins with higher VFAs had more isoleucine and proline, which were needed for the synthesis of recognizing and binding proteins (oligopeptide permease subunit A (OppA) and dipeptide permease (Dpp)) of acidogens and beneficial for transporters (Dpp subunit F/Opp subunit F), more hydrolysates (amino acids) were therefore transported into the cell. Further investigation indicates that more electron acceptor and electron donor paired amino acids were in the hydrolysates, facilitating the Stickland reaction and promoting intracellular amino acids bio-transformation to VFAs.

Abstract
Plant exosomes exhibit high stability and easy absorption, and have emerged as promising bioactive tools due to their potential health benefits and biomedical applications. Saffron tepals contain abundant metabolites with potential therapeutic properties and were used for exosome extraction by ultracentrifugation and gradient purification. The exosomes showed an average particle size of 151.5 ± 79.6 nm and exhibited a spherical morphology. Five well-conserved miRNAs-miR157, miR166, miR168, miR396, and miR398-were identified in the exosomes, which are involved in the coordination of growth and physiological plant responses with endogenous and environmental abiotic and biotic signals, and their potential targets in mammals are upregulated in specific cancer types and associated with inflammation. Proteome analysis revealed an enrichment of proteasome proteins, ribosomal proteins, and proteins involved in the cytoskeleton, transport across the membrane (ABC transporters), and vesicle trafficking (RAB GTPases, TM9SF and Coatomer subunits). Metabolite analyses showed mainly anthocyanins. The exosomes have selective stimulatory activity on macrophages, increasing the expression of surface molecules (CD80 and CD86), and cytokines (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α), but not the levels of IL-10. Overall, these results indicated that saffron flowers are an effective and abundant source of exosomes as new nanomedicines for human health.

Abstract
In this study, the effect of microwave drying on oil content, bioactive compounds, antioxidant activity, polyphenols and fatty acid profiles of fresh (control) and dried plum kernels was investigated. The oil quantities of plum seeds dried were found between 27.40% (control) and 42.42% (900 W). Total phenolic and flavonoid values of fresh (control) and dried-plum seeds were assessed to be between 9.77 (control) and 41.66 mgGAE/100 g (900 w) to 6.90 (control) and 23.67 mg/100 g (900 W), respectively. Total phenol and flavonoid quantities of the plum seeds dried at 900 W were slightly higher than those of the plum seeds dried at 720 W. L* (brightness) values of plum seeds changed between 55.97 and 59.62. Roasting in the microwave oven at 720 W was decreased the L* values of samples, while L* value of sample roasted at 900 W was closed to control. Gallic and 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid values of plum kernel samples were assigned to be between 1.19 (720 W) and 2.01 mg/100 g (900 W) to 0.22 (control) and 7.09 mg/100 g (900 W), respectively. Also, catechin and rutin quantities of plum seeds were established between 0.20 (control) and 7.55 mg/100 g (900 W) to 1.42 (control) and 3.59 mg/100 g (900 W), respectively. In general, the amount of phenolic compounds of plum seeds dried at every two watts showed an increase (except quercetin) compared to the control. Only the amount of quercetin decreased partially in the dried samples. While oleic acid quantities of raw (control) and dried plum kernel oils are reported between 68.28% (720 W) and 71.60% (900 W), linoleic acid amounts of plum kernel oils were found between 20.77% (900 W) and 23.49% (720 W). The quantities of saturated fatty acids in plum kernel oils were found to be quite low compared to the content of unsaturated fatty acids.

Abstract
The large-scale production of chicken eggs results in a substantial amount of eggshell (ES) residue, often considered as waste. These discarded shells naturally decompose in soil approximately within a year. Eggshells (ES), comparatively contribute lesser towards environmental pollution, contain a remarkable amount of calcium, which can be converted into various valuable products that finds applications in industries, pharmaceuticals, and medicine. Among the diverse applications of ES, most effective and promising applications are removal of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Pb, Zn, and Cu) ∼93-99 % metal adsorption capacity and capturing of flue gases (CO2 and SO2) from the environment. With ES having a maximum CO2 sorption capacity of 92 % as compared to other sources, and SO2 adsorption capacity of Calcined ES∼11.68 mg/g. The abundance, low cost and easy availability of CaO from ES makes them sustainable and eco-friendly. Additionally, its versatility extends beyond environmental prospects, as it is widely used in various industries as a catalyst, sorbent, fertilizer, and calcium supplement in food for individuals, plants and animals, among other diverse fields of study. Owing to its versatile applications, current review focuses on structure, chemical composition, treatment methods, and valorization pathways for diverse applications, aiming to reduce the eggshells waste and mitigate environmental pollution.

Abstract
The study addresses global fruit waste concerns in the food industry by extracting pectin from both ripe and unripe banana peels at varying pH levels and time intervals using hydrochloric acid. The best results were observed for unripe banana peel pectin at pH 1.5 and 250 min exhibiting a yield of 16.46% and favorable characteristics. In muffin development, seven treatments (M0, M1, M2, M3, M4, M5 and M6) are prepared and analyzed for morphology, nutritional content, and sensory parameters. The M4 treatment, utilizing pectin from unripe banana peel at pH 1.5 and 250 min, displays superior qualities with reduced peroxide value, free fatty acids, percent moisture loss, and hardness. Sensory evaluations indicate high acceptability due to lower fat content. In conclusion, the extraction of pectin from unripe banana peels proves promising as a fat replacer in bakery items, maintaining muffin quality while addressing fruit waste challenges in the food industry.

Abstract
The main objective of this experiment was to investigate the technological potential of upcycling unsparged non-conventional brewers' spent grains (BSGs) in bread-making and assess the comparative quality of bread enriched with non-fermented and lactic acid-fermented BSGs obtained from mashes brewed with starch adjuncts of buckwheat and oats. After the runoff of the first wort, unsparged non-conventional BSGs with approximately 75% moisture, acidic pH, and yield in the soluble extract above 56.6% (w/w d.m.) were used in substituting wheat flour with 5 and 15% (w/w d.m.) in bread-making recipes. The highest loaf volume value (318.68 cm3/100 g) was observed for 5% fermented buckwheat-BSG addition. Except for the samples with 5% fermented BSGs, specific volumes decreased. Crumb moisture was reduced by up to 22% for all samples, with this parameter related to bread weight. Bread porosity, elasticity, acidity, and overall sensory acceptability were better for fermented than non-fermented BSGs. The results proved that non-conventional BSGs with buckwheat and oats addition have the potential to be valorized in new bread assortments, and lactic acid fermentation applied to the BSGs is beneficial, even for overall sensory acceptability and quality of baked end-products. Technological, buckwheat-BSG was more convenient than oats-BSG. Further research continues to optimize and upscale Technology Readiness Levels.

Abstract
This review investigates innovative strategies for upcycling agricultural residues into valuable pharmaceutical compounds. The improper disposal of agricultural residues contributes to significant environmental issues, including increased greenhouse gas emissions and ecosystem degradation. Upcycling offers a sustainable solution, transforming these residues into high-value bioproducts (antioxidants, antitumor agents, antidiabetic compounds, anti-inflammatory agents, and antiviral drugs). Nanotechnology and microbial biotechnology have a crucial role in enhancing bioavailability and targeted delivery of bioactive compounds. Advanced techniques like enzymatic hydrolysis, green solvents, microwave processing, pyrolysis, ultrasonic processing, acid and alkaline hydrolysis, ozonolysis, and organosolv processes are explored for their effectiveness in breaking down agricultural waste and extracting valuable compounds. Despite the promising potential, challenges such as variability in residue composition, scalability, and high costs persist. The review emphasizes the need for future research on cost-effective extraction techniques and robust regulatory frameworks to ensure the safety, efficacy, and quality of bioproducts. The upcycling of agricultural residues represents a viable path towards sustainable waste management and production of pharmaceutical compounds, contributing to environmental conservation and public health improvements. This review provides an analysis of the current literature and identifies knowledge gaps, offering recommendations for future studies to optimize the use of agricultural residues in the drug industry.

It is important to note that the amount of this waste will increase with industrialization, and effective solutions must be found urgently. Many wastes that cause environmental pollution are evaluated by their low-tech conversion into products with little economic value, such as animal feed and fertilizer. Therefore, the evaluation of food processing waste using effective recycling techniques has become an interesting subject with increasing population, ongoing biotechnological studies, and advances in technology. The conversion of food waste into biotechnological products via fermentation is a sustainable, environmentally friendly, and economical method in line with the principles of green chemistry. This approach promotes the reuse of food waste by supporting the principles of a circular economy and offers sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels and synthetic chemicals. This contributes to reducing the carbon footprint, preserving soil and water quality, and providing economic sustainability through the production of high-value products. In this study, the properties of olive mill wastewater, an important and valuable waste in the olive oil industry, its environmental aspects, and its use in biotechnological applications that integrate green chemistry are evaluated.

Abstract
Agri-food wastes generated by industrial food processing are valorized through the extraction of biomolecules to obtain value-added products useful for various industrial applications. In the present review, we describe the valuable by-products and bioactive molecules that can be obtained from agricultural wastes and propose extracellular vesicles (EVs) as innovative nutraceutical and therapeutic compounds that could be derived from agriculture residues. To support this idea, we described the general features and roles of EVs and focused on plant-derived extracellular vesicles (PDEVs) that are considered natural carriers of bioactive molecules and are involved in intercellular communication between diverse kingdoms of life. Consistently, PDEVs exert beneficial effects (anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and immune-modulatory) on mammalian cells. Although this research field is currently in its infancy, in the near future, the isolation of EVs and their use as nutraceutical tools could represent a new and innovative way to valorize waste from the agri-food industry in an ecofriendly way.

Abstract
The increasing global concern over plastic waste and its environmental impact has led to a growing interest in the development of sustainable packaging alternatives. This study focuses on the innovative use of expired dairy products as a potential resource for producing edible packaging materials. Expired milk and yogurt were selected as the primary raw materials due to their protein and carbohydrate content. The extracted casein was combined with various concentrations of chitosan, glycerol, and squid ink, leading to the studied samples. Chitosan was chosen due to its appealing characteristics, including biodegradability, and film-forming properties, and casein was utilized for its superior barrier and film-forming properties, as well as its biodegradability and non-toxic nature. Glycerol was used to further improve the flexibility of the materials. The prepared hydrogels were characterized using various instrumental methods, and the findings reveal that the expired dairy-based edible packaging materials exhibited promising mechanical properties comparable to conventional plastic packaging and improved barrier properties with zero-oxygen permeability of the hydrogel membranes, indicating that these materials have the potential to effectively protect food products from external factors that could compromise quality and shelf life.

Abstract
Citrus fruits are one of the most widely used fruits around the world and are used as raw fruits, but are also processed into products such as beverages, and large amounts of by-products and waste are generated in this process. Globally, disposal of citrus waste (CW) through simple landfilling or ocean dumping can result in soil and groundwater contamination, which can negatively impact ecosystem health. The case of Korea is not much different in that these wastes are simply buried or recycled wastes are used as livestock feed additives. However, there are many reports that CW, which is a waste, has high potential to produce a variety of products that can minimize environmental load and increase added value through appropriate waste management. In this study, we aim to explore the latest developments in the evaluation and valorization of the growing CW green technologies in an effort to efficiently and environmentally transform these CW for resource recovery, sustainability, and economic benefits. Recent research strategies on integrated biorefinery approaches have confirmed that CW can be converted into various bioproducts such as enzymes, biofuels and biopolymers, further contributing to energy security. It was found that more efforts are needed to scale up green recovery technologies and achieve diverse product profiling to achieve zero waste levels and industrial viability.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to determine the ACE inhibitory activity of aqueous extracts of olive pomace and to understand whether they represent a good source of bioactive LMW peptides for nutritional and pharmacological applications. We produced a water extract from olive pomace (var. Picual) and obtained its low molecular weight (LMW) fraction (<3 kDa). The calculated yield of extraction was 100.2 ± 7.9 mg of LMW peptides per 100 g of olive pomace. The olive pomace LMW fraction possessed strong ACE inhibitory activity (IC50 = 3.57 ± 0.22 µg prot/mL). The LMW fraction (<3 kDa) was analysed by nanoscale liquid chromatography-Orbitrap coupled with tandem mass spectrometry and de novo sequencing. Thirty new peptides, containing between 7-17 amino acids and molecular masses ranging 778-1354 Da, were identified by the Peaks database algorithm using the available Olea europaea (cv. Farga) genome database. Ten new peptides were also identified by Peaks de novo sequencing. The protein sources of twelve peptides detected in the database by Peaks DB were identified by BLAST search. The ACE inhibitory activity of the identified peptides was predicted by BIOPEP software. We conclude that olive pomace possesses ACE inhibitory activity and contains low molecular weight peptides with (predicted) biological activity. Olive pomace may represent a good source of peptides for nutritional and pharmaceutical applications. In our study, it has been shown that olive pomace possesses ACE inhibitory activity and contains low molecular weight peptides with (predicted) biological activity. Olive pomace may represent a good source of peptides for nutritional and pharmaceutical applications. More research is needed in order to identify the in vivo effects of olive pomace bioactive peptides.

Abstract
This study investigated the quality of anaerobic (AnE) and oxic/anoxic (O/A) effluents from a continuous-feed structured-bed hybrid baffled reactor (SBHBR) treating dairy wastewater impacts on lettuce and cucumber germination. While sustainable technologies like SBHBR have successfully removed organic matter and total nitrogen from dairy wastewater, residual concentrations may still represent a risk to water resources. Therefore, phytotoxicity bioassays were conducted with lettuce and cucumber seeds in contact with effluent during early stages to evaluate the potential implications of dairy wastewater reuse in agriculture. The study also explored the potential of SBHBR technology in promoting water resource preservation and creating a sustainable energy and nutrient cycling system. The physicochemical parameters of both effluents were characterized, and the phytotoxicity was evaluated by measuring the germination index (GI), root length (RL), the number of germinated seeds (SG), and epicotyl elongation (EE) for both lettuce and cucumber. The study revealed that the O/A effluent demonstrated lower phytotoxicity than the AnE effluent. The mean results indicate that the O/A zone wastewater was more conducive to cucumber germination than the AnE zone. Moreover, a positive influence of organic matter in the effluent on root growth and epicotyl elongation in cucumber, as well as the presence of nitrogen on the germination index, in both plant species. These findings emphasize the importance of considering effluent characteristics for suitable irrigation, highlighting SBHBR's potential as an effective solution for treating and reusing dairy wastewater in agriculture. This approach helps conserve water resources and promote a sustainable energy and nutrient cycling system.

Abstract
Bovine bone is an animal-origin matrix rich in type I collagen (COL I) and it necessitates prior demineralization and makes COL I available. This study investigated the ossein-hydroxyapatite physicochemical properties evaluation as a result of processing and solubilization by acids and revealed the bone matrix demineralization and making COL I available. The tibia residue from bovine sources was processed, ground, and transformed into bone matrix powder. The bone matrix was solubilized in acetic acid followed by lactic acid. The bone matrix was evaluated as a result of processing and solubilization by acids: ossein and hydroxyapatite percentages by nitrogen and ash content, mineral content, particle size distribution, Fourier-transformation infrared spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscope. For the obtained residual extracts, pH and mineral content were evaluated. The solubilization by acids affected the ossein-hydroxyapatite physicochemical properties, and the bone matrix solubilized by acetic and lactic acid showed the preservation of the ossein alongside the loss of hydroxyapatite. The processing and the solubilization by acids were revealed to be a alternative to bone matrix demineralization and enabling the accessibility of bone COL I. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Bovine bone is an abundant type I collagen source, but processing maneuvers and demineralization effect present limitations due to the rigidity of the structural components. Exploring methodologies to process and demineralize will allow type I collagen to be obtained from the bone source, and direct and amplify the potentialities in the chemical and food industries. The research focused on bone sources and collagen availability holds paramount significance, and promotes repurposing agribusiness residues and development of protein-base products.

Abstract
Agrifood industries generate large amounts of waste that may result in remarkable environmental problems, such as soil and water contamination. Therefore, proper waste management and treatment have become an environmental, economic, and social challenge. Most of these wastes are exceptionally rich in bioactive compounds (e.g., polyphenols) with potential applications in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. Indeed, the recovery of polyphenols from agrifood waste is an example of circular bioeconomy, which contributes to the valorization of waste while providing solutions to environmental problems. In this context, unconventional extraction techniques at the industrial scale, such as microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), which has demonstrated its efficacy at the laboratory level for analytical purposes, have been suggested to search for more efficient recovery procedures. On the other hand, natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) have been proposed as an efficient and green alternative to typical extraction solvents. This review aims to provide comprehensive insights regarding the extraction of phenolic compounds from agrifood waste. Specifically, it focuses on the utilization of MAE in conjunction with NADES. Moreover, this review delves into the possibilities of recycling and reusing NADES for a more sustainable and cost-efficient industrial application. The results obtained with the MAE-NADES approach show its high extraction efficiency while contributing to green practices in the field of natural product extraction. However, further research is necessary to improve our understanding of these extraction strategies, optimize product yields, and reduce overall costs, to facilitate the scaling-up.

Abstract
Wastewater contamination with heavy metal(loids)s has become a worldwide environmental and public health problem due to their toxic and non-degradable nature. Different methods and technologies have been applied for water/wastewater treatment to mitigate heavy metal(loid)-induced toxicity threat to humans. Among various treatment methods, adsorption is considered the most attractive method because of its high ability and efficiency to remove contaminants from wastewater. Agricultural waste-based adsorbents have gained great attention because of high efficiency to heavy metal(loids)s removal from contaminated water. Chemically modified biosorbents can significantly enhance the stability and adsorption ability of the sorbents. The two mathematical models of sorption, Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models, have mostly been studied. In kinetic modeling, pseudo-second-order model proved better in most of the studies compared to pseudo-first-order model. The ion exchange and electrostatic attraction are the main mechanisms for adsorption of heavy metal(loid)s on biosorbents. The regeneration has allowed various biosorbents to be recycled and reused up to 4-5 time. Most effective eluents used for regeneration are dilute acids. For practical perspective, biosorbent removal efficiency has been elucidated using various types of wastewater and economic analysis studies. Economic analysis of adsorption process using agricultural waste-based biosorbents proved this approach cheaper compared to traditional commercial adsorbents, such as chemically activated carbon. The review also highlights key research gaps to advance the scope and application of waste peels for the remediation of heavy metal(loid)s-contaminated wastewater.

Abstract
Glycans have been proven to play special roles in keeping human health as a class of nutritional and bioactive ingredients in many food materials. However, their broad use in the food industry is hindered by the lack of comprehensive analytical methods for high-quality food glycomics studies and large-quantity raw materials for their production. This study focuses on structural identification and quantitative comparison of bioactive N-glycans in seven species of livestock and poultry plasma as potential natural glycan resources by a novel comprehensive relative quantification strategy based on stable isotope labeling with nondeuterated and deuterated 4-methyl-1-(2-hydrazino-2-oxoethyl)-pyridinium bromide (d0/d7-HMP) in combination with linkage-specific derivatization of sialic acid residues. Methodological validation of the method in terms of detection sensitivity, signal resolution, quantification linearity, precision, and accuracy on model neutral and complicated sialylated glycans demonstrated its advantages over the existing methods. Based on this method, a series of bioactive N-glycans were found in seven species of livestock and poultry plasma, and their differences in structure, abundance percentages, and relative contents of N-glycans were revealed, demonstrating their excellent applicability for comprehensive food glycomics analysis and great exploitation potential of these plasma samples as large-quantity raw materials in producing bioactive N-glycans for application in food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
This study focuses on the chemical, physical, and biological hazards that pose food contamination risks during the processing of food in facilities using open food processing equipment through a review of published literature from 2015 to 2023. Ten main pathways for food contamination were developed and a list of chemical, physical, and biological food hazards, along with descriptions of process parameters and inputs that can contribute to food contamination, and prevention strategies associated with each pathway were compiled. The paper briefly discusses the relation between food contamination and the sustainable development goals (SDGs). The presented overview of contamination pathways and their associated food hazards can provide insights for food safety management plans, food processing equipment design, food processing facility layout, HACCP programs, and further studies on hygienic monitoring methods.

Abstract
Current food production methods and consumption behaviours are unsustainable and contribute to environmental harm. One example is food waste-around 38% of food produced is wasted each year. Here, we show that two common food waste products, wheat bran and brewer's spent grain, can successfully be upcycled via miso fermentation. During the fermentation process, kokumi γ-glutamyl peptides, known to increase mouthfulness, are produced; these include γ-ECG (oxidized), γ-EVG, γ-EV, γ-EE, γ-EF, and γ-EL. The profiles of kokumi peptides and volatile aroma compounds are correlated with koji substrate, pH, and enzymatic activity, offering straightforward parameters that can be manipulated to increase the abundance of kokumi peptides during the fermentation process. Correlation analysis demonstrates that some volatile aroma compounds, such as fatty acid ethyl esters, are correlated with kokumi peptide abundance and may be responsible for fatty, greasy, and buttery aromas. Consumer sensory analysis conveys that the bitter taste of vegetables, such as that in endives, can be dampened when miso extract containing kokumi peptides is added. This suggests that kokumi peptides, along with aroma volatile compounds, can enhance the overall flavour of plant-based products. This study opens new opportunities for cereal processing by-product upcycling via fermentation, ultimately having the potential to promote a plant-based diet.

Abstract
Fermentation is thought to be born in the Fertile Crescent, and since then, almost every culture has integrated fermented foods into their dietary habits. Originally used to preserve foods, fermentation is now applied to improve their physicochemical, sensory, nutritional, and safety attributes. Fermented dairy, alcoholic beverages like wine and beer, fermented vegetables, fruits, and meats are all highly valuable due to their increased storage stability, reduced risk of food poisoning, and enhanced flavor. Over the years, scientific research has associated the consumption of fermented products with improved health status. The fermentation process helps to break down compounds into more easily digestible forms. It also helps to reduce the amount of toxins and pathogens in food. Additionally, fermented foods contain probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that help the body to digest food and absorb nutrients. In today's world, non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and allergies have increased. In this regard, scientific investigations have demonstrated that shifting to a diet that contains fermented foods can reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases. Moreover, in the last decade, there has been a growing interest in fermentation technology to valorize food waste into valuable by-products. Fermentation of various food wastes has resulted in the successful production of valuable by-products, including enzymes, pigments, and biofuels.

Abstract
In an increasingly resource-constrained era, using waste and by-products from grain processing has a wide appeal. This is due to the nutritive value and economic aspects of this process and due to its compatibility with the trend towards more sustainable food systems. Following the fundamentals of circular economy, a current need is the effective utilization of grain waste and by-products for conversion into value-added products in the food industry. The aim of this study is twofold: (1) using bibliometrics and the literature found in various databases, we aim to understand the progress of valorizing grain waste and by-products in human nutrition. The literature within various databases, namely, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Elsevier Scopus, has been evaluated for its merits and values. (2) We aim to explore knowledge-based strategies by reviewing the literature concerning the possible use of grain waste and by-products for the food processing industry, reducing the burden on virgin raw materials. The review allowed us to unlock the latest advances in upcycling side streams and waste from the grain processing industry.

Abstract
Currently dairy processing by-products, such as whey, still propose a significant threat to the environment if unproperly disposed. Microalgal bioconversion of such lactose containing substrates can be used for production of valuable microalgae-derived bio-products as well as for significant reduction of environmental risks. Moreover, it could significantly reduce microalgae biomass production costs, being a significant obstacle in commercialization of many microalgae species. This review summarizes current knowledge on the use of lactose containing substrates, e.g. whey, for the production of value-added products by microalgae, including information on producer cultures, fermentation methods and cultivation conditions, bioprocess productivity and ability of microalgal cultures to produce β-galactosidases. It can be stated, that despite several limitations lactose-containing substrates can be successfully used for both-the production of microalgal biomass and removal of high amounts of excess nutrients from the cultivation media. Moreover, co-cultivation of microalgae and other microorganisms can further increase the removal of nutrients and the production of biomass. Further investigations on lactose metabolism by microalgae, selection of suitable strains and optimisation of the cultivation process is required in order to enable large-scale microalgae production on these substrates.

Abstract
New scaffolds, based on whey protein isolate (WPI) and chitosan (CS), have been proposed and investigated as possible materials for use in osteochondral tissue repair. Two types of WPI-based hydrogels modified by CS were prepared: CS powder was incorporated into WPI in either dissolved or suspended powder form. The optimal chemical composition of the resulting WPI/CS hydrogels was chosen based on the morphology, structural properties, chemical stability, swelling ratio, wettability, mechanical properties, bioactivity, and cytotoxicity evaluation. The hydrogels with CS incorporated in powder form exhibited superior mechanical properties and higher porosity, whereas those with CS incorporated after dissolution showed enhanced wettability, which decreased with increasing CS content. The introduction of CS powder into the WPI matrix promoted apatite formation, as confirmed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses. In vitro cytotoxicity results confirmed the cytocompatibility of CS powder modified WPI hydrogels, suggesting their suitability as cell scaffolds. These findings demonstrate the promising potential of WPI/CS scaffolds for osteochondral tissue repair.

Abstract
Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is well known for its high content of bioactives, including polyphenols, flavonoids, and tannins, which have been shown to exhibit a wide range of biological activities, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anticancer effects. It is worth noting that the majority of these molecules are found in the peels, which are usually disposed of after processing, causing a significant amount of waste, amounting to more than 3.6 million t/y. This work investigates microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) in water for the recovery of antioxidants from pomegranate peels (PP), including the optimisation of temperature and extraction times. The total phenolic, anthocyanin, flavonoid, and tannin contents of the recovered extracts were determined, as well as their antioxidant activities, which were found to be 356.35 mgGAE/gExtr, 303.97 µgCy3G/gExtr, 37.28 mgQE/gExtr, 56.48 mgGAE/gExtr, and 5.72 mmolTE/gExtr, respectively (according to the adopted reference). All results were compared with those obtained using a conventional protocol. In addition, the potential for water recycling by means of downstream nanofiltration in optimised MAE was investigated, leading to overall water reuse of approx. 75%. Power consumption (20.92 W/mgGAE) and common green metrics, Reaction Mass Efficiency (RME), E-Factor, and the Process Mass Intensiti/efficiency (PMI, PME), were considered in evaluating the proposed PP valorisation strategy. Finally, the biological activities of the main products were assessed. The antimicrobial properties of the PP extracts against three Gram-positive and three Gram-negative bacteria and their antiproliferative activity towards human cancer cells were tested. S. aureus bacteria was the most susceptible to the PP extracts. All tested products displayed antiproliferative activity against HeLa cells when higher concentrations were tested, with D-PP/NF (obtained from dried PP and sequential nanofiltration) being the most effective. This result was also confirmed via clonogenic analysis, which generally indicated the possible anti-cancer activity of pomegranate peel extracts obtained using this green approach.

Abstract
This study aimed to produce and characterise microparticles produced from barley residue proteins (BRP) enriched with β-carotene. The microparticles were obtained by freeze-drying five emulsion formulations with 0.5% w/w whey protein concentrate and different concentrations of maltodextrin and BRP (0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5 and 6.0% w/w), with the dispersed phase consisting of corn oil enriched with β-carotene. The mixtures were mechanically mixed and sonicated, the formed emulsions were freeze-drying. The microparticles obtained were tested for encapsulation efficiency, humidity, hygroscopicity, apparent density, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), accelerated stability and bioaccessibility. Microparticles produced with the emulsion containing 6% w/w BRP had lower moisture content (3.47 ± 0.05%), higher encapsulation efficiency (69.11 ± 3.36%), bioaccessibility value of 84.1% and greater β-carotene protection against thermal degradation. SEM analysis showed that microparticles had sizes ranging from 74.4 to 244.8 µm. These results show that BRP are viable for the microencapsulation of bioactive compounds by freeze-drying.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Escherichia coli cells are the most frequently used hosts in recombinant protein production processes and mainly require molecules such as IPTG or pure lactose as inducers of heterologous expression. A possible way to reduce the production costs is to replace traditional inducers with waste materials such as cheese whey permeate (CWP). CWP is a secondary by-product generated from the production of the valuable whey proteins, which are obtained from ultrafiltration of cheese whey, a main by-product of the dairy industry, which is rich in lactose. RESULTS The effects of CWP collected from an Italian plant were compared with those of traditional inducers on the production of two model proteins (i.e., green fluorescent protein and the toxic Q55 variant of ataxin-3), in E. coli BL21 (DE3) cells. It was found that the high lactose content of CWP (165 g/L) and the antioxidant properties of its micronutrients (vitamins, cofactors and osmolytes) sustain production yields similar to those obtained with traditional inducers, accompanied by the improvement of cell fitness. CONCLUSIONS CWP has proven to be an effective and low-cost alternative inducer to produce recombinant proteins. Its use thus combines the advantage of exploiting a waste product with that of reducing the production costs of recombinant proteins.

Abstract
The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has created more pressure on countries and society at large for the development of alternative solutions for synthetic and fossil fuel derived products, thus mitigating climate change and environmental hazards. Food wastes and microalgae have been studied for decades as potential sources of several compounds that could be employed in various fields of application from pharmaceutical to textile and packaging. Although multiple research efforts have been put towards extracting rich compounds (i.e., phenolic compounds, tocopherols, and tocotrienols) from these sources, they still remain overlooked as two major sources of bioactive compounds and pigments, mainly due to inefficient extraction processes. Hence, there is a growing need for the development of optimized extraction methods while employing non-organic solvent options following the main principles of green chemistry. This review will focus on delivering a clear and deep analysis on the existing procedures for obtaining bioactive compounds and pigments from food wastes derived from the most consumed and produced fruit crops in the world such as apples, oranges, cherries, almonds, and mangoes, and microalgal biomass, while giving light to the existing drawbacks in need to be solved in order to take full advantage of the rich properties present in these two major biorefinery sources.

Abstract
Drastic growth in the amount of global food waste produced is observed every year, not only due to incessant population growth but also economic growth, lifestyle, and diet changes. As a result of their increasing health awareness, people are focusing more on healthy diets rich in fruits and vegetables. Thus, following worldwide fruit and vegetable consumption and their processing in various industries (juice, jams, wines, preserves), significant quantities of agro-industrial waste are produced (pomace, peels, seeds) that still contain high concentrations of bioactive compounds. Among bioactive compounds, anthocyanins have an important place, with their multiple beneficial effects on health; therefore, their extraction and recovery from food waste have become a topic of interest in recent years. Accordingly, this review aims to summarize the primary sources of anthocyanins from food waste and the novel eco-friendly extraction methods, such as pulsed electric field extraction, enzyme-assisted extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, pressurized liquid extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, and ultrasonic-assisted extraction. The advantages and disadvantages of these techniques will also be covered to encourage future studies and opportunities focusing on improving these extraction techniques.

Abstract
Traditional plastics represent a tremendous threat to the environment because of increases in polluting manufacturing as well as their very extended degradation time. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are polymers with similar performance to plastic but are compostable and synthesizable from renewable sources and therefore could be a replacement for fossil-based plastics. However, their production costs are still too high, thus demanding the investigation of new and cheap substrates. In this sense, agricultural wastes are attractive because they are inexpensive and largely available. Specifically, fruit and vegetables are rich in sugars that could be fermented into PHAs. In this work two strains, Cupriavidus necator DSM 545 and Hydrogenophaga pseudoflava DSM 1034, well-known PHA-producing microbes, were screened for their ability to grow and accumulate PHAs. Ten different fruit and vegetable processing waste streams, never before reported in combination with these strains, were tested. Residues from red apple and melon were found to be the most suitable feedstocks for PHA production. Under specific selected conditions, C. necator DSM 545 accumulated up to 7.4 and 4.3 g/L of 3-hydroxybutyrate (3HB) from red apple and melon, respectively. Copolymer production was also obtained from melon. These results confirm the attractiveness of food processing waste as a promising candidate for PHA production. Ultimately, these novel substrates draw attention for future studies on process optimization and upscaling with C. necator.

Abstract
This study was envisaged to understand the effect of increasing pyrolysis temperature on the Cr(VI) removal potential of the groundnut shells derived biochars. The biochars were prepared at four different pyrolysis temperatures (350 °C, 450 °C, 550 °C, 650 °C) and were used unmodified to examine the adsorption potential for Cr(VI). Influence of biochar dose (1-10 g/L), pHinitial (2-10), Cr(VI)initial (10-500 mg/L) on Cr(VI) adsorptions; adsorption kinetics and isotherms were investigated. The observations suggested that the pyrolysis temperature is the key player in deciding the physicochemical properties as well the adsorption potential of the biochars. SEM and FTIR analysis suggested significant morphological and functional transformations in biochars with increasing pyrolysis temperature. The pHinitial was found to be the most profound adsorption parameter determining the adsorption potential of the biochars. The Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of the biochars decreased with the increase of the pyrolysis temperature (142.87-31.25 mg/L) as well as the solution pHinitial. All the biochars attained 100% removal efficiency with 50 mg/L of Cr(VI)initial and GNSB/350 achieved it in the minimum time (10 h) among all the biochars. GNSB/350 showed promising Langmuir adsorption capacity of 142.87 mg/L (pH 2, Tadsorption 30 °C, Cr(VI)initial 10-500 mg/L). In addition, the adsorption mechanism was found to be a synergistic action of chemi/physi-sorption with monolayer adsorption. Hence, the pyrolysis temperature significantly altered the physicochemical properties of the biochars, which highly influenced the adsorption performance of biochars.

The dairy industry processes vast amounts of milk and generates high amounts of secondary by-products, which are still rich in nutrients (high Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels) but contain high concentrations of salt. The current European legislation only allows disposing of these effluents directly into the waterways with previous treatment, which is laborious and expensive. Therefore, as much as possible, these by-products are reutilized as animal feed material and, if not applicable, used as fertilizers adding phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and other nutrients to the soil. Finding biological alternatives to revalue dairy by-products is of crucial interest in order to improve the utilization of dry dairy matter and reduce the environmental impact of every litre of milk produced. Debaryomyces hansenii is a halotolerant non-conventional yeast with high potential for this purpose. It presents some beneficial traits - capacity to metabolize a variety of sugars, tolerance to high osmotic environments, resistance to extreme temperatures and pHs - that make this yeast a well-suited option to grow using complex feedstock, such as industrial waste, instead of the traditional commercial media. In this work, we study for the first time D. hansenii's ability to grow and produce a recombinant protein (YFP) from dairy saline whey by-products. Cultivations at different scales (1.5, 100 and 500 ml) were performed without neither sterilizing the medium nor using pure water. Our results conclude that D. hansenii is able to perform well and produce YFP in the aforementioned salty substrate. Interestingly, it is able to outcompete other microorganisms present in the waste without altering its cell performance or protein production capacity.

Abstract
IntroductionThe use of novel soil amendments and the exploitation of plant growth-promoting microorganisms are considered promising tools for developing a more sustainable agriculture in times when ensuring high-yield productions with limited resources is essential.MethodsIn this study, the potential of brewers' spent grain (BSG), the major by-product of the brewing industry, as organic soil amendment, was investigated. Bioprocessed BSG, obtained by an enzymatic treatment coupled with fermentation, together with native BSG, were used as amendments in a pot-trial. An integrated analytical approach aimed at assessing the modification of the physicochemical properties of a typical Mediterranean alkaline agricultural soil, and the plant growth-promoting effect on escarole (Cichorium endivia var. Cuartana), was carried out.ResultsThe use of biomasses led to soil organic content and total nitrogen content up to 72 and 42% higher, compared to the unamended soils. Moreover, the lower pH and the higher organic acids content doubled phosphorus availability. Although the number of leaves per plant in escaroles from pots amended with native and bioprocessed BSG did not show any difference compared to plants cultivated on unamended pots, the average fresh weight per escarole head, was higher in pots amended with bioprocessed BSG.DiscussionHence, the results collected so far encourage BSG application for agricultural purpose, while solving the problem of disposing of such abundant side stream.

Abstract
As an important food crop, corn has an important impact on people's lives. The processing of corn produces many by-products, such as corn gluten meal, corn husk, and corn steep liquor, which are rich in protein, oil, carbohydrates, and other nutrients, all of which are inexpensive. Their accumulation in large quantities during the production process not only results in a burden on the environment but also the loss of potentially valuable food materials that can be processed. In fact, the by-products of corn processing have been partially used in functional foods, nutrients, feed, and other industries. There is no doubt that the secondary utilization of these by-products can not only solve the problem of waste pollution caused by them, but also produce high value-added products and improve the economic benefits of corn. This paper describes in detail the processing and higher-value utilization of the five main by-products: corn gluten meal, corn husks, corn steep liquor, corn germ, and fuel ethanol by-product. The utilization status of corn processing by-products was discussed roundly, and the development trend of corn processing by-products in China and other countries was analyzed, which provided the reference for the development of the corn deep processing industry.

Abstract
The aim of this research was to determine the influence of tomato pomace (TP) addition on the chemical, nutritional, and technological characteristics of cream crackers made from wheat flour and 4%, 6%, 8%, and 10% TP. The TP-enriched cream crackers showed progressively increasing ash (from 0.69 of the control to 1.22 g/100 g dry matter of the 10% TP sample), fat (from 11.39 to 13.04 g/100 g), protein (from 13.53 to 15.60 g/100 g), total dietary fibre (from 4.08 to 7.80), carotenoids (from 0.55 to 8.56 mg/kg), tocols (from 57.59 to 71.63 mg/kg), free phenolic acids (from 100.08 to 277.37 mg/kg), free flavonoids (from 0.0 to 45.28 mg/kg), bound flavonoids (from 0.0 to 27.71 mg/kg), and fatty acids contents, antioxidant activity and dough viscosity. The colour coordinates increased via augmenting the amounts of TP. Thickness, volume, and specific volume decreased gradually with increasing TP; the enrichment reduced cracker hardness from 65.42 N (control) to 26.28 N (crackers with 10% TP), while the snapping force rose. Cream crackers with 8% TP showed the best sensory quality. Tomato pomace addition improves the nutritional quality of foods; furthermore, its recycling will help to solve the problems linked to the disposal of this industry waste.

Abstract
Fruit waste contains several bioactive components such as polyphenols, polysaccharides, and numerous other phytochemicals, including pigments. Furthermore, new financial opportunities are created by using fruit ‘leftovers’ as a basis for bioactivities that may serve as new foods or food ingredients, strengthening the circular economy’s properties. From a technical standpoint, organic phenolic substances have become more appealing to industry, in addition to their application as nutritional supplements or functional meals. Several extraction methods for recovering phenolic compounds from fruit waste have already been published, most of which involve using different organic solvents. However, there is a growing demand for eco-friendly and sustainable techniques that result in phenolic-rich extracts with little ecological impact. Utilizing these new and advanced green extraction techniques will reduce the global crisis caused by fruit waste management. Using modern techniques, fruit residue is degraded to sub-zero scales, yielding bio-based commodities such as bioactive elements. This review highlights the most favorable and creative methods of separating bioactive materials from fruit residue. Extraction techniques based on environmentally friendly technologies such as bioreactors, enzyme-assisted extraction, ultrasound-assisted extraction, and their combination are specifically covered.

Abstract
The physicochemical characteristics, stability, and potential application of emulsified Rana chensinensis ovum oil was explored. The emulsified Rana chensinensis ovum oil was stabilized by Rana chensinensis ovum protein isolates. The emulsified Rana chensinensis ovum oil with the waste protein isolates demonstrated promising antioxidation property. Oral delivery application of the emulsified Rana chensinensis ovum oil for quercetin delivery.
Rana chensinensis ovum (RCO) is the major waste/by-product of Oviductus Ranae. This study investigated physicochemical characteristics and stability of emulsified Rana chensinensis ovum oil (RCOO) with Rana chensinensis ovum protein isolates (RCOPI) by particle size, zeta potential, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), visual appearance, confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), rheology and antioxidant capacity. The emulsified RCOO demonstrated great stability, antioxidant capacity and rheological properties. The potential application of the emulsified RCOO as a delivery system was studied using quercetin as an example. The stability of encapsulated quercetin was investigated through storage stability, thermal stability and photostability. The bioaccessibility of encapsulated quercetin was explored by in vitro digestion simulation experiments. The results showed the stability and bioaccessibility of quercetin encapsulated in emulsified RCOO was greatly improved. This study showed that the emulsified RCOO is a promising edible delivery system for hydrophobic bio-actives.

Abstract
This review explores reutilization opportunities of protein-rich bio-waste derived from the major tree nuts (almonds, walnuts, and cashew nuts) oil processing industries through biorefinery strategies. The mechanically pressed out oil cakes of these nuts have high protein (45-55%), carbohydrate (30-35%), and fiber that could be utilized to produce bioactive peptides, biofuels, and dietary fiber, respectively; all of which can fetch substantially greater value than its current utilization as a cattle feed. Specific attention has been given to the production, characterization, and application of nut-based de-oiled cake hydrolysates for therapeutic benefits including antioxidant, antihypertensive and neuroprotective properties. The often-neglected safety/toxicological evaluation of the hydrolysates/peptide sequences has also been described. Based on the available data, it is concluded that enzymatic hydrolysis is a preferred method than microbial fermentation for the value addition of de-oiled tree nut cakes. Further, critical insights on the existing literature as well as potential research ideas have also been proposed.

Abstract
Pectin is one of the main structural components in fruits and an indigestible fiber made of D-galacturonic acid units with α (1-4) linkage. This study investigates the microbial degradation of pectin in apple waste and the production of bioactive compounds. Firstly, pectin-degrading bacteria were isolated and identified, then pectinolytic activity was assessed by DNS. The products were evaluated by TLC and LC-MS-ESI. The antioxidative effects were investigated using DPPH and anti-cancer effects and cytotoxicity were analyzed by MTT and flow cytometry. In this study two new bacterial isolates, Alcaligenes faecalis AGS3 and Paenibacillus polymyxa S4 with the pectinolytic enzyme were introduced. Structure analysis showed that the products of enzymatic degradation include unsaturated mono, di, tri, and penta galacturonic acids with 74% and 69% RSA at 40 mg/mL for A. faecalis and P. polymyxa S4, respectively. The results of anti-tumor properties on MCF-7 cells by MTT assay, for products of AGS3 and S4 at 40 mg/mL after 48 h, showed 7% and 9% survival, respectively. In the flow cytometric assessment, the compounds of AGS3 at 40 mg/mL were 100% lethal in 48 h and regarding S4 isolate caused 98% death. Cytotoxicity evaluation on L-929 cells showed no significant toxicity on living cells.

Abstract
Food waste disposal has recently received much attention worldwide due to its major impact on environmental pollution and economic costs. Using high moisture content of food waste has the highest negative environmental impact due to increased greenhouse gas emissions, odor, and leachate. Drying technologies play an important role in reducing the moisture content of food waste, which is necessary for environmental sustainability and safety. The first part of this review highlights that sun-drying is the most cost-effective drying method. However, it has not been widely recommended for food waste management due to several limitations, including the inability to control sunray temperature and the inability to control end-product quality. Thermal drying eliminates moisture from food waste quickly, preventing hydrolysis and biodegradation. Thermal dryers, such as the GAIA GC-300 dryer, and cabinet dryer fitted with a standard tray, are the best alternative to sun drying. The second part of this review highlights that dehydrated food waste products are slightly acidic (4.7–5.1), have a high electrical conductivity (EC) value (4.83–7.64 mS cm-1), with high nutrient content, due to low pH levels, dehydrated food waste is not suitable for direct use as a fertilizer for the plants. So, the dried food waste should be composted before application to the plants because the composting process will dominate the limitation of phytotoxins, anoxia, salinity, and water repellence. Trench compost can be a good choice for decomposing dried organic waste because trench compost relies solely on soil decomposing microorganisms and insects.

Abstract
The development of sustainable and low carbon impact processes for a suitable management of waste and by-products coming from different factors of the industrial value chain like agricultural, forestry and food processing industries. Implementing this will helps to avoid the negative environmental impact and global warming. The application of the circular bioeconomy (CB) and the circular economic models have been shown to be a great opportunity for facing the waste and by-products issues by bringing sustainable processing systems which allow to the value chains be more responsible and resilient. In addition, biorefinery approach coupled to CB context could offer different solution and insights to conquer the current challenges related to decrease the fossil fuel dependency as well as increase efficiency of resource recovery and processing cost of the industrial residues. It is worth to remark the important role that the biotechnological processes such as fermentative, digestive and enzymatic conversions play for an effective waste management and carbon neutrality.

Abstract
Carrot industry processing outputs 50% waste from raw materials; this waste contains polyphenols and carotenoids, which are a significant natural source of pro-vitamin A. Also, yogurt's high consumption globally allows for designing a new functional product. So the goal is to enhance the functionality of fortified stirred yogurt by incorporating carotenoid beads. The carotenoids were extracted from carrot waste using ultrasonication. Then nanoemulsion carotenoids incorporating with alginate to produce beads by extrusion technique. Measurement of carotenoid stability to nanoemulsion and beads. Manufactured five treatments of orange-flavored stirred yogurt and investigated its physicochemical properties, LAB survival, viscosity, and sensory acceptability. Findings – Carrot waste extract had about 44.75 ± 3.15 mg/g of β-carotene. The mean particle size of the nanoemulsion decreased with the increasing carotenoid addition (0.5%, 1%, and 1.5%) of carrot waste extract. The mean diameters of the alginate beads with nanoemulsions were 1.498 ± 0.245, 1.654 ± 0.310, and 1.792 ± 0.454 mm, respectively. The highest chemical stability of carotenoids showed with the alginate beads after Storage at 55°C to 14 days, compared with free or nanoemulsion carotenoids. Yogurt's physicochemical properties, viscosity, and LAB count improve when double-encapsulated carotenoids are added. Carotenoid double-encapsulation appeared to have a high ability to protect carotenoids from degradation and the ability to be applied in dairy and pharmaceutical products. Also, the resultant stirred yogurt with carotenoids-loaded beads gave carotenoids high stability and sensory acceptability.

Abstract
In the present study, carotenoids were recovered from processing sweet corn by-products (SCB). The total carotenoid content determined in the SCB extract was 1.19 mg/100 g DW, and the principal carotenoids identified by the HPLC technique were zeaxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin and lutein. Freeze- and spray-drying techniques were applied for the encapsulation of SCB extract; for this purpose, four different wall materials were used: two proteins (soy and pea) and two carbohydrates (maltodextrin and inulin). The physicochemical characteristics of eight encapsulates were determined to assess their stability. The obtained results indicate that, by using the freeze-drying method, better water activity, moisture content as well as encapsulation efficiency were achieved. Spray-drying resulted in better flowing properties. All obtained encapsulates were microbiologically safe for food applications due to the fact that the obtained results are in agreement with the requirements for consumer safety, i.e., for further food applications and scale-up processes. Chemometric classification and ranking techniques were applied to observe potential grouping among the investigated encapsulates and to select the most favorable encapsulates regarding the used wall materials and encapsulation techniques for the assessment of sustainability in food products. The most suitable wall material and encapsulation technique for the assessment of sustainability in food products was produced by freeze-drying pea protein as a wall material (FDP).

Abstract
Worldwide, a huge amount of agricultural food wastes and byproducts containing valuable bioactive compounds are generated, especially throughout the entire supply chain. Minimizing food wastes and byproducts is the first option to avoid environmental problems, and to help the economy and the society. Although many countries implement policies to reduce food wastes and byproducts, and different management methods are available to utilize agricultural food wastes, they are still produced annually. Nanotechnological and biotechnological approaches are recently used as novel and green applications to valorize agricultural food wastes and improve their stability and applicability. In this Review, these approaches are covered in detail with given examples. Another valorization way of consumable food waste is using it for functional food production. This Review focuses on specific examples of functional foods with food waste as an ingredient. In addition, the problems and limitations of waste management and valorization methods are investigated, considering future perspectives.
