Abstract
BACKGROUND The factors associated with glucose disturbances in major depressive disorder (MDD) patients with comorbid suicide attempts remains unclear. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study with a large sample size to examine risk factors for glucose disturbances, including clinically relevant factors, lipid metabolic parameters, and thyroid hormone levels in first-episode drug-naïve (FEDN) MDD patients with comorbid suicide attempts. METHODS A total of 1718 FEDN MDD patients were enrolled. The Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) were used to assess the clinical symptoms of the patients. Fasting blood samples were collected and biochemical parameters were measured, including fasting blood glucose (FBG), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4, FT3), anti-thyroid autoantibodies (TgAb), and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb). Statistical analyses were performed using multivariate logistic regression analyses and receptor operating characteristic curves. RESULTS The prevalence of glucose disturbances was 24 % in MDD patients with comorbid suicide attempts, which was 1.88 times higher than that in MDD patients without suicide attempts (11 %). Among MDD patients with comorbid suicide attempters, compared with patients without glucose disturbances, patients with glucose disturbances had higher mean scores on the HAMA, HAMD and PANSS positive subscale scores, and higher mean levels of TC, TG, TSH, HDL-C, LDL-C, and TPOAb. The combination of HAMA score, HAMD score, PANSS positive subscale score and TSH distinguished between patients with and without glucose disturbances. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest a high prevalence of glucose disturbances in FEDN MDD patients with comorbid suicide attempts. Several clinical correlates, lipid metabolism parameters, and thyroid hormone function are associated with glucose disturbances in MDD patients with comorbid suicide attempts.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Ganoderic acid A (GAA, C30H44O7) is one of the most abundant and active components of Ganoderic acids (GAs). GAs are highly oxidized tetracyclic triterpenoid compounds mainly derived from Ganoderma lucidum (Curtis) P. Karst (Chinese: ). GAA is primarily isolated from the fruiting body of Ganoderma lucidum. Modern pharmacological investigations have established the broad pharmacological effects of GAA, highlighting its notable influence on managing various conditions, including inflammatory diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancer. This review provides a comprehensive summary of GAA's pharmacological activities. MATERIAL AND METHODS The literature in this review were searched in PubMed and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) using the keywords "Ganoderic acid A″, "Pharmacology" and "Pharmacokinetics". The literature cited in this review dates from 2000 to 2024. RESULTS According to the data, GAA exerts anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antitumor, neuropsychopharmacological, hepatoprotective, cardiovascular, renoprotective, and lung protective effects by regulating a variety of signal transduction pathways, such as nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT), Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor-2 (Nrf2), phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K)/AKT, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and Notch. Given its promising pharmacological activity, GAA holds excellent potential for treating human diseases. The pharmacokinetic properties of GAA have also been reviewed, revealing low bioavailability but high absorption and elimination rates. In addition, network pharmacology and molecular docking analyses verified that GAA plays a role in multiple diseases through MAPK3, tumor necrosis factor (TNF), caspase-3 (CASP3), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG), and β-catenin (CTNNB1) signaling pathways. CONCLUSION GAA plays a pivotal role in various pathological and physiological processes, boasting broad application prospects. Furthermore, the network pharmacological results reveal the mechanisms of GAA in the treatment of multiple diseases. In the future, it is necessary to conduct further experiments to elucidate its specific mechanism of action, thus laying the foundation for the scientific utilization of GAA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Estimating the disease burden of stomach cancer is essential to developing evidence-based prevention and treatment strategies. AIMS To analyze the number of deaths and the temporal trends in the mortality and years of life lost (YLL) in relation to gender, age, and the impact of aging and comorbidity via non-communicable diseases on stomach cancer burden in one of the most developed regions of a transitioning country. METHODS Mortality data of stomach cancer were collected from the Vital Statistics System of the Pudong New Area, Shanghai, China, from 2005 to 2019. The long-term trends in crude mortality rates (CMR), age-standardized mortality rates worldwide (ASMRW), and rate of YLL(YLLr) were analyzed using the Joinpoint regression program. The aging and non-aging factors affecting the mortality rate were evaluated by the decomposition method. RESULTS A total of 11,609 deaths from stomach cancer occurred from 2005 to 2019. The CMR and ASMRW of stomach cancer were 29.83/105 person-year and 12.20/105 person-year, respectively. The CMR, ASMRW, and YLLr in males were nearly twice as higher as those in females(CMR: 35.47/105 vs. 19.83/105, ASMRW: 15.64/105 vs. 7.74/105, YLLr: 378.63/105 vs. 229.13/105). The main co-morbidities involved the circulatory (24.64%) and respiratory system (20.62%). The main metastatic sites were liver (9.08%), lung (2.79%) and peritoneum (2.33%). The long-term trends in CMR and ASMRW were significantly decreasing in males, females, and the total population from 2005 to 2019. A total of 9,460 (81.48%) elderly people aged ≥ 60 years died of stomach cancer. The top three age groups with the highest CMR were ≥ 80 years, 70-79 years, and 60-69 years. The CMR and YLLr of people aged ≥ 80 years showed the largest significantly decreasing trends. The CMR caused by aging showed significantly upward trends [average annual percent changes (AAPC) 95%CI = 37.63(14.95,64.79)%, P < 0.001], which caused by non-aging factor showed significantly downward trends [AAPC 95%CI = -18.17(-22.83,-13.22)%, P < 0.001]. CONCLUSION Age is an important factor affecting the trend of disease burden of stomach cancer. Paying attention to high-risk people may help to reduce the YLL.

Abstract
Background Studies on the burden and epidemiological aspects of substance-use disorders in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are limited. Aims To evaluate the burden and epidemiology of substance-use disorders in MENA countries during 1990-2019. Study Design Ecological study. Methods Data from the global burden of disease study were used in the current study. The incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost from mortality, years of healthy life lost due to disability, and disability-adjusted life years (DALY) rates attributable to each group of disorders across age groups, genders, years, and countries were retrieved along with their corresponding age-standardized values. Age-standardized DALYs rates of alcohol-use disorders, drug-use disorders, and substanceuse disorders associated with sociodemographic index across MENA countries and over 30 years were examined. Results The age-standardized DALY rate of substance-use disorders in MENA had risen from 190.1 in 1990 to 234.93 per 100,000 in 2019, indicating a 23.57% increase. In both genders, the DALY rate was highest in the 25-29-years age group in 2019 (440.81 per 100,000 in females and 645.97 per 100,000 in males). In addition, in 2019, age-standardized DALY rates of alcohol-use disorder were the highest in the United Arab Emirates (77.08 per 100,000), Afghanistan (67.77 per 100,000), and Bahrain (60.35 per 100,000). In almost all these countries, opioid-use disorder had the highest age-standardized DALY rate in 2019. Conclusion The burden of substance-use disorders has increased from 1990 to 2019 in the MENA region in contrast to the global trend. This study findings highlight that the current interventions and laws implemented in this region to address drug trafficking and substance-use disorders may be insufficient and ineffective, warranting further international collaboration and implementation of more effective strategies to reduce the overall burden of substance-use disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common complication of diabetes and the leading cause of visual impairment and blindness. It has a serious impact on the mental and physical health of patients. AIM To evaluate the anxiety and depression status of patients with DR, we examined their influencing factors. METHODS Two hundred patients with DR admitted to the outpatient and inpatient departments of ophthalmology and endocrinology at our hospital were selected. A questionnaire was conducted to collect general patient information. Depression and anxiety were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale, respectively. The diabetes specific quality of life scale and Social Support Rating Scale were used to assess the quality of life of patients with DR and their social support, respectively. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess the correlations. RESULTS The prevalence of depression and anxiety were 26% (52/200) and 14% (28/200), respectively. Regression analysis revealed that social support was associated with depression [odds ratio (OR) = 0.912, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.893-0.985] and anxiety (OR = 0.863, 95%CI: 0.672-0.994). Good quality of life (diabetes specific quality of life scale score < 40) was a protective factor against anxiety (OR = 0.738, 95%CI: 0.567-0.936) and depression (OR = 0.573, 95%CI: 0.4566-0.784). Visual impairment significantly increased the likelihood of depression (OR = 1.198, 95%CI: 1.143-1.324) and anxiety (OR = 1.746, 95%CI: 1.282-2.359). Additionally, prolonged diabetes duration and history of hypertension were significant risk factors for both conditions, along with a family history of diabetes. CONCLUSION Key factors influencing anxiety and depression in patients with DR include social support, quality of life, visual impairment, duration of diabetes, family history of diabetes, and history of hypertension.

Abstract
This study evaluates the impact of environmentally relevant, low-concentration deltamethrin exposure to Eriocheir sinensis ovaries. Our findings revealed that even at a concentration of 0.05 µg/L, deltamethrin exposure can induce significant ovarian toxicity through a 5-day exposure, with gradual amplification detected with time, demonstrating the toxicity amplification effect. Hematoxylin and Eosin staining revealed that low-concentration deltamethrin exposure produces pathological damage consistent with acute toxicity-yolk granules were dissolved and oocyte membranes were ruptured. High-throughput RNA-sequencing data indicated that the acute and low-concentration exposure groups involved completely different pathways and molecular functions, suggesting distinct mechanisms for their toxic effects. Following the identification of phospholipase D (PLD) as a potential core factor regulating the toxicity amplification effect of low concentration deltamethrin, we delved into subsequent mechanism studies using quantitative real-time PCR, immunofluorescence and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Through the GnRH signaling pathway, increased PLD indirectly stimulates augmented estradiol secretion, subsequently inducing apoptosis by upregulating Cathepsin D, which can activate the key executioners of apoptosis-caspases (CASP3 and CASP7). In conclusion, low-concentration deltamethrin exposures can induce significant ovarian damage through apoptosis mediated by the upregulation of PLD in the ovaries of Eriocheir sinensis at environmentally relevant concentrations, which lays the preliminary theoretical groundwork for further elucidating the mechanism of toxicity amplification effect of pesticide exposure at low concentrations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have been shown to include anxiety. However, the association between demographic and physiological factors in COVID-19-associated anxiety symptoms is poorly understood. Therefore, the present cross-sectional study was conducted to examine anxiety symptoms and associated factors among patients with the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant during the quarantine period in Shanghai. METHODS The study was conducted between April 16, 2022, and May 21, 2022, at Fangcang Shelter Hospital in Shanghai, China. Data were collected using an anonymous online questionnaire. Demographic characteristics, respiratory symptoms, vaccine dose, comorbidities (such as hypertension and diabetes), type of work, and mental health symptoms were evaluated. Logistic regression was used to examine the relationship between anxiety symptoms and risk factors. Stratified analyses were performed to investigate potential interactions. RESULTS A total of 2132 patients with confirmed Omicron variant SARS-CoV-2 infection were enrolled. The results demonstrated that female gender (OR = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.11-1.94), nonmanual labor (OR = 1.62, 95% CI = 1.25-2.09), respiratory symptoms (OR = 3.19, 95% CI = 2.30-4.43), and having other comorbidities (OR = 1.65, 95% = 1.09-2.50) were positively associated with anxiety symptoms. A significant interaction was found between gender and (a) nonmanual labor (OR = 1.54, 95% = 1.29-1.85), (b) respiratory symptoms (OR = 2.06, 95% = 1.72- 2.48), and (c) comorbidities (OR = 1.57, 95% = 1.16-2.12), such that the relationship with anxiety symptoms was stronger in women compared to men. There were also significant interactions between age group and (a) nonmanual labor (stronger in those ages >46) and (b) respiratory symptoms (stronger in those ages 36-45) regarding the association with anxiety symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Alleviation of respiratory symptoms, addressing comorbidities, and implementation of both psychological and psychopharmacological treatments may help reduce anxiety symptoms following infection with the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant in mainland China.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Major depressive disorder (MDD), the second leading cause of disability globally, is considered to be associated with a consequent deterioration in the quality of life and can lead to a major economic burden on medical service and suicide-related costs. Previous research has shown that acupuncture may be beneficial for treating MDD. However, there is a lack of rigorous evidence from previous studies comparing acupuncture with antidepressant medications. This study aims to assess the therapeutic potential of acupuncture in the management of depressive disorders. METHODS AND ANALYSIS A multicentre, randomised, participant-blind, sham-controlled, 2×2 factorial clinical trial, Acupuncture and Escitalopram for Treating Major Depression Clinical Study, aims to compare the efficacy of acupuncture versus escitalopram in treating depression. This study will be conducted at three hospitals in China, enrolling 260 patients with moderate-to-severe major depression, as defined by DSM-5 criteria and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-17) Scores above 17. Participants will be randomly assigned in equal proportions to one of four groups (acupuncture/escitalopram, sham acupuncture/escitalopram, acupuncture/placebo and sham acupuncture/placebo) and undergo 30 sessions across 10 weeks. The primary outcome is change in HDRS-17 Score and secondary outcomes include BDI, Clinical Global Impression, Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 and Mini-Mental State Examination Scores, alongside potential biological markers. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION Ethical approval for the study was granted by the Ethics Committees of the Seventh People's Hospital of Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (2023-7th-HIRB-020), Shanghai Mental Health Centre (2022-86) and Shanghai Pudong New Area Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine (2023-003). Informed consent will be obtained from all participants. The study's findings are intended for publication in a scholarly journal. TRIAL REGISTRATION NCT05901571.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor mental health is prevalent among men who have sex with men (MSM), including MSM university students (MSMUS), causing a significant burden on their health and society. The study aimed to compare the difference in levels of depressive symptoms between Chinese MSMUS and non-MSMUS and test the mediating roles of social support and loneliness in the relationship between MSM status and depressive symptoms among male university students. METHODS From June to October 2018, a total of 305 MSMUS and 2447 non-MSMUS from two cities in Sichuan province (China) were investigated using questionnaires. RESULTS The proportion of depression in the MSMUS and non-MSMUS groups was 54.1 % and 36.4 %, respectively. MSM status, social support, and loneliness were all significantly associated with depressive symptoms among Chinese university students. Structural equation modelling showed that the association between MSM status and depressive symptoms was partially mediated by three indirect paths, including 1) via social support (mediated proportion = 19.4 %), 2) via loneliness (mediated proportion = 19.3 %), and 3) via social support and then loneliness (mediated proportion = 16.1 %). CONCLUSIONS Depression was prevalent among university students in China, especially MSMUS. The findings increased our understanding of the mediating roles of social support and loneliness in the link between MSM status and depressive symptoms among Chinese male university students, which have great implications for designing interventions to improve their mental health. LIMITATION The cross-sectional study design limited causal inferences.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) seriously threatens human health. BRICS, known as an acronym for "Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa," were also actively carrying out researches on MDD. This study aimed to conduct a bibliometric study of research on MDD conducted by the BRICS. By searching in the Web of Science and using the software Vosviewer and Citespace as analysis tools, this study analyzed the cooperation network at the country, institution, author-specific levels, the research hotspots and trends from BRICS between 2003-2022. A total of 10,911 articles were finally included. Our findings showed that researches on MDD from BRICS rapidly increased during the past two decades. China and India have shown explosive growth, while South Africa has the largest average "Usage Count" and "Time Cited". The current cooperation partners of the BRICS were mainly high-income countries and other developing countries with similar cultures, languages, and geographical locations. Institutions in high-income countries served as the main bridges for BRICS cooperation, while at the author level, some core authors in the BRICS countries serve as centers. China showed a flexible model in domestic partnership, but institutions and authors in the other four countries have gathered to cooperate within the group. BRICS research on MDD mainly focused on cognitive science, brain science, epidemiology, and disease mechanisms. The keywords"gut microbiota", "network analysis," "machine learning" and "sleep quality" showed explosive growth and might become research hotspots in the near future. This bibliometric analysis provided a science knowledge graph and references for other researchers.

Abstract
Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic and associated quarantine measures have precipitated a surge in mental health disorders, particularly depression and anxiety. Government policies and restrictions on physical activity have contributed to this phenomenon, as well as diminished subjective social connectedness and exacerbated objective social isolation. As two dimensions of social isolation, it is worth noting that subjectively perceived social connectedness serves as a protective factor for mental health, whereas the decline in the size of objectively evaluated social networks poses a significant risk. However, research investigating the combined influence of these two dimensions remains limited. Methods This study used an online survey to collect data to investigate the effects of objective social connectedness and objective social networks on anxiety, stress, and depression during COVID-19 quarantine. A total of 485 participants were analyzed using statistical methods, including paired t-test, Pearson correlation analysis, linear regression, cluster analysis, ANOVA, and moderated mediated. Results The study found that anxiety and depression scores increased during the quarantine, with age, education, and social connectedness scores associated with the increase. Pre-quarantine anxiety and depression levels were strongly correlated with mental health status during quarantine. Cluster analysis, respectively, revealed three clusters for those without increasing anxiety and depression scores. The study also found that objective social network influences the impact of subjective social connectedness on pre-quarantine mental health, which in turn affects anxiety and depression levels during quarantine. Conclusion The study identified that quarantine increased anxiety and depression, with age being protective, and education and subjective social connectedness as risk factors. The study also emphasizes the comprehensive impact of objective and subjective social isolation. Although individuals perceive the same degree of social connectedness, those with smaller social networks are more prone to developing symptoms of anxiety and depression, which are also more likely to worsen during quarantine.

Abstract
Schizophrenia substantially contributes to the burden of mental disorders. Schizophrenia's burden and epidemiological estimates in some countries have been published, but updated estimates of prevalence, incidence, and schizophrenia-related disability at the global level are lacking. Here, we present the data from and critically discuss the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study data, focusing on temporal changes in schizophrenia's prevalence, incidence, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) globally. From 1990 to 2019, schizophrenia raw prevalence (14.2 to 23.6 million), incidence (941,000 to 1.3 million), and DALYs (9.1 to 15.1 million) increased by over 65%, 37%, and 65% respectively, while age-standardized estimates remained stable globally. In countries with high socio-demographic index (SDI), both prevalence and DALYs increased, while in those with low SDI, the age-standardized incidence decreased and DALYs remained stable. The male/female ratio of burden of schizophrenia has remained stable in the overall population over the past 30 years (i.e., M/F = 1.1), yet decreasing from younger to older age groups (raw prevalence in females higher than males after age 65, with males having earlier age of onset, and females longer life expectancy). Results of this work suggest that schizophrenia's raw prevalence, incidence, and burden have been increasing since 1990. Age-adjusted estimates did not reduce. Schizophrenia detection in low SDI countries is suboptimal, and its prevention/treatment in high SDI countries should be improved, considering its increasing prevalence. Schizophrenia sex ratio inverts throughout the lifespan, suggesting different age of onset and survival by sex. However, prevalence and burden estimates for schizophrenia are probably underestimated. GBD does not account for mortality from schizophrenia (and other mental disorders, apart from anorexia nervosa).

Abstract
Mental disorders are increasing in South Asia (SA), but their epidemiological burden is under-researched. We carried out a systematic umbrella review to estimate the prevalence of mental disorders and intentional self-harm in the region. Multiple databases were searched and systematic reviews reporting the prevalence of at least one mental disorder from countries in SA were included. Review data were narratively synthesised; primary studies of common mental disorders (CMDs) among adults were identified from a selected subset of reviews and pooled. We included 124 reviews. The majority (n = 65) reported on mood disorders, followed by anxiety disorders (n = 45). High prevalence of mental disorders and intentional self-harm was found in general adult and vulnerable populations. Two reviews met our pre-defined criteria for identifying primary studies of CMDs. Meta-analysis of 25 primary studies showed a pooled prevalence of 16.0% (95% CI = 11.0-22.0%, I 2 = 99.9%) for depression, 12.0% (5.0-21.0%, I 2 = 99.9%) for anxiety, and 14.0% (10.0-19.0, I 2 = 99.9%) for both among the general adult population; pooled estimates varied by country and assessment tool used. Overall, reviews suggest high prevalence for mental disorders in SA, but evidence is limited on conditions other than CMDs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression may be associated with the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The goal of this study was to explore the association of severe of depression with the risk of type 2 diabetes in adults in Guizhou, China. METHODS A 10-year prospective cohort study of 7158 nondiabetes adults aged 18 years or older was conducted in Guizhou, southwest China from 2010 to 2020. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was used to measure the prevalence of depression. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) of depression and incident type 2 diabetes. A quantile regression (QR) analytical approach were applied to evaluate the associations of PHQ-9 score with plasma glucose values. RESULTS A total of 739 type 2 diabetes cases were identified during a median follow-up of 6.59 years. The HR (95% CI) per 1-SD increase for baseline PHQ-9 score was 1.051 (1.021, 1.082) after multivariable adjustment. Compared with participants without depression, those with mild or more advanced depression had a higher risk of incident type 2 diabetes (HR:1.440 [95% CI, 1.095, 1.894]). Associations between depression with type 2 diabetes were suggested to be even stronger among women or participants aged ≥45 years (p < .05). There are significant positive associations of PHQ-9 score with 2-h oral glucose tolerance test blood glucose levels. CONCLUSION Depression significantly increased the risk of incident type 2 diabetes, especially in women, participants aged ≥45 years, Han ethnicity, and urban residents. These findings highlighted the importance and urgency of depression health care.

Abstract
Alcohol use disorder is a chronic, relapsing and remitting illness with limited efficacy of pharmacotherapy in preventing relapse. Several non-pharmacological treatment options are usually used to improve treatment outcomes. In this case report, the patient with alcohol use disorder (as per Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5th edition criteria) had memory impairments, which was seen to limit the effectiveness of cognitive approaches such as motivational enhancement therapy. Covert sensitization, a behavioral technique based on operant conditioning, was considered an alternative option along with pharmacotherapy to enhance abstinence and was seen to be effective in creating an association between alcohol use and unpleasant consequences in the patient. We observed an improvement in subjective craving and motivation to abstain following the therapy sessions. This highlights the use of covert sensitization as an alternative non-pharmacological intervention for patients with alcohol use disorder with cognitive impairments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is unclear whether the enhancing contact model (ECM) intervention is effective in reducing family caregiving burden and improving hope and quality of life (QOL) among family caregivers of persons with schizophrenia (FCPWS). METHODS We conducted a cluster randomized controlled trial in FCPWS in eight rural townships in Xinjin, Chengdu, China. In total, 253 FCPWS were randomly allocated to the ECM, psychoeducational family intervention (PFI), or treatment as usual (TAU) group. FCPWS in three groups were assessed caregiving burden, QOL and state of hope at baseline (T0), post-intervention (T1), 3-month (T2), and 9-month (T3) follow-up, respectively. RESULTS Compared with participants in the TAU group, participants in the ECM group had statistically significantly lower caregiving burden scores both at T1 and T2 (p = 0.0059 and 0.0257, respectively). Compared with participants in the TAU group, participants in the PFI group had statistically significantly higher QOL scores in T1 (p = 0.0406), while participants in the ECM group had statistically significantly higher QOL scores in T3 (p = 0.0240). Participants in both ECM and PFI groups had statistically significantly higher hope scores than those in the TAU group at T1 (p = 0.0160 and 0.0486, respectively). CONCLUSIONS This is the first study to explore the effectiveness of ECM on reducing family caregiving burden and improving hope and QOL in rural China. The results indicate the ECM intervention, a comprehensive and multifaceted intervention, is more effective than the PFI in various aspects of mental wellbeing among FCPWS. Future research needs to confirm ECM's effectiveness in various population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND International consensus shows that community-based rehabilitation (CBR) service is an effective way to improve functioning and negative symptoms and address the treatment gap for schizophrenia. Rigorous trials are needed in China to demonstrate effective and scalable CBR interventions to significantly improve outcomes for people with schizophrenia and to provide evidence of the economic benefits. The objectives of this trial are to examine the effectiveness of CBR as an adjunct to test the usual facility-cased care (FBC) in comparison to FBC alone in improving a range of outcomes in people with schizophrenia and their caregivers. METHODS This trial is a cluster randomized controlled trial design in China. The trial will be conducted at three districts of Weifang city, Shandong province. Eligible participants will be identified from the psychiatric management system where community-dwelling patients with schizophrenia have been registered. Participants will be recruited after providing informed consent. 18 sub-districts will be randomly allocated in a 1:1 ratio to facility-based care (FBC) plus CBR (intervention arm) or FBC alone (control arm). The structured CBR intervention will be delivered by trained psychiatric nurses or community health workers. We aim to recruit 264 participants. The primary outcomes include symptoms of schizophrenia, personal and social function, quality of life, family burden of caring, etc. The study will be conducted according to good ethical practice, data analysis and reporting guidelines. DISCUSSION If the hypothesized clinical benefit and cost-effectiveness of CBR intervention are confirmed, this trial will provide significant implications for policy makers and practitioners to scale up rehabilitation services, as well as for people with schizophrenia and their family to promote recovery and social inclusion, and to alleviate the burden of care. Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD), dysthymia disorder (DD) and bipolar disorder (BD) are the most prevalent affective disorders. A nationwide epidemiological investigation of MDD, DD and BP in school-attending children and adolescents was carried out, taking the effect of age, gender and comorbidity into consideration. METHODS A two-stage nationwide epidemiological study of point prevalence was conducted. Using a multistage cluster stratified random sampling strategy. The sample distribution was described, and the point prevalence of affective disorders was estimated. Chi-squared tests were used to compare disease prevalence based on sex and age. Comorbid ratios for MDD, DD and BP were calculated. RESULTS The total number of cases in Stage 1 was 72,107 (aged 6-16 years). The point prevalence of MDD, DD and BP were 2.004 % (95 % CI: 1.902 to 2.106), 0.352 % (95 % CI: 0.309 to 0.395) and 0.856 % (95 % CI: 0.788 to 0.923), respectively. The total prevalence of affective disorder was 3.212 % (95 % CI: 3.079 to 3.338). The total prevalence of affective disorders between sexes (female: 3.834 % versus male: 2.587 %, χ2 = 90.155, p < 0.001) was consistent with the gender difference in MDD, DD and MD. The total prevalence of affective disorders in adolescents was higher than that in children (adolescents: 5.024 % versus children: 1.863 %, χ2 = 566.841, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our study is the first nationwide survey on the prevalence of affective disorders among school-attending children and adolescents aged 6-16 in China. Our results also highlighted the importance of addressing comorbidities in future studies of affective disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Genetic factors play an important role in the etiology of schizophrenia (SZ). Catenin Delta 2 (CTNND2) is one of the genes regulating neuronal development in the brain. It is unclear whether CTNND2 is involved in SZ. With the hypothesis that CTNND2 may be a risk gene for SZ, we performed a case-control association analysis to investigate if CTNND2 gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) are implicated in SZ in a Han Chinese northern population. MATERIALS AND METHODS We recruited subjects from 2010 to 2022 from the Han population of northern Henan and divided them into two case-control samples, including a discovery sample (SZ = 528 and control = 528) and replication sample (SZ = 2458 and control = 6914). Twenty-one SNPs were genotyped on the Illumina BeadStation 500G platform using GoldenGate technology and analyzed by PLINK. Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to assess clinical symptoms. RESULTS Rs16901943, rs7733427, and rs2168878 SNPs were associated with SZ (Chi2 = 7.484, 11.576, and 5.391, respectively, df = 1; p = 0.006, 0.00067, and 0.02, respectively) in two samples. Rs10058868 was associated with SZ in male patients in the discovery sample (Chi2 = 6.264, df = 1, p = .044). Only rs7733427 survived Bonferroni correction. Linkage disequilibrium block three haplotypes were associated with SZ in the discovery and total sample. PANSS analysis of the four SNPs implicated rs10058868 and rs2168878 with symptoms of depression and excitement, respectively, in the SZ patients. CONCLUSION Four SNPs were identified as being correlated with SZ. The CTNND2 gene may be involved in susceptibility to SZ.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between cognitive function and depressive symptoms among Chinese adults aged 40 years and above, as well as the series of multiple mediating effects of Instrument Activities of Daily Living disability and life satisfaction on this relationship. The data was obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS, 2013-2018), including 6466 adults aged 40 years and above. The mean age of the adults was 57.7 ± 8.5. The SPSS PROCESS macro program was conducted to examine the mediating effects. The results indicated that there was a significant association between cognitive function and depressive symptoms five years later (B = -0.1500, 95%CI: -0.1839, -0.1161), which could also be demonstrated through three mediation pathways: (1) the mediating pathway through IADL disability (B = -0.0247, 95%CI: -0.0332, -0.0171); (2) the mediating pathway through life satisfaction (B = 0.0046, 95%CI: 0.0000, 0.0094); and (3) the chain mediation pathway through IADL disability and life satisfaction (B = -0.0012, 95%CI: -0.0020, -0.0003). Both IADL disability and life satisfaction have been proven to be crucial mediators for the relationship between cognitive function and depressive symptoms five years later. It is necessary to improve individuals' cognitive function and reduce the negative impact of disability on them, which is important to enhance their life satisfaction and prevent depressive symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Different countries have differences in social and cultural context and health system, which may affect the clinical characteristics of psychiatric inpatients. This study was the first to compare cross-cultural differences in the clinical characteristics of psychiatric inpatients in three hospitals from Western China and America. METHODS Overall, 905 and 1318 patients from three hospitals, one in America and two in Western China, respectively, were included. We used a standardised protocol and data collection procedure to record inpatients' sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. RESULTS Significant differences were found between hospitals from the two countries. Positive symptoms were the main reason for admission in the Chinese hospitals, while reported suicide and self-injury symptoms more frequently led to hospital admission in America. Moreover, there were more inpatients with combined substance abuse in the American hospital (97.6% vs. 1.9%, P < 0.001). The length of stay (LOS) in America was generally shorter than in China (10.5 ± 11.9 vs. 20.7 ± 13.4, P < 0.001). The dosage of antipsychotic drugs used in the American hospital was higher than in China (275.1 ± 306.9 mg vs. 238.3 ± 212.5 mg, P = 0.002). Regression analysis showed that male sex, older age, retirees, being admitted because of physical symptoms, and using higher doses of antipsychotic drugs were significantly associated with longer hospitalisation in the American hospital (P < 0.05). Comparatively, patients who were divorced, experiencing suicidal ideation, admitted involuntarily, admitted because of physical, depression, or anxiety symptoms, and using higher doses of antipsychotic drugs had longer hospitalisation in Chinese hospitals (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Significant variations in clinical characteristics of inpatients were found between hospitals from Western China and America. The LOS in Chinese hospitals was significantly longer, but patients used higher doses of antipsychotic drugs in the American hospital. Admission due to physical symptoms and the use of higher dosage drugs were related to longer LOS in both countries.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate mental health symptoms (anxiety, depression, and sleep status) and their associated factors among people infected with the SARS-CoV-2 omicron variant during the quarantine period in Shanghai. METHODS To investigate the mental health symptoms among participants with SARS-CoV-2 omicron infection, an anonymous online survey questionnaire was used. The survey panel included the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and 22-item Ruminative Responses Scale (RRS). Group comparisons and correlation analyses were employed to explore the epidemiological characteristics of patients and factors related to depression and anxiety symptoms. RESULTS A total of 960 participants completed the survey. Of the total respondents, 583 participants (60.7%) were male, and the mean (SD) age was 34.33 (9.21) years (95% CI: 33.74-34.91). The prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms among the participants was 13.7% (n = 151, 95% CI: 11.6%-15.7%) and 8.6% (n = 90, 95% CI: 6.9%-10.3%), respectively. Age-stratified analysis showed that the prevalence of anxiety among the 36- to 45-year-old group (12.9%; n = 35, 8.9%-16.9%) was significantly higher than that of the 18- to 15-year-old group (7.4%; n = 42, 5.3%-9.6%, p = .011). Spearman's correlation analyses showed that rumination (assessed by the RRS) was significantly and positively correlated with depression (rho = .706, p < .001) and anxiety symptoms (rho = .758, p < .001). CONCLUSION The results suggest that female and middle-aged populations manifest higher susceptibility to mental health distress during the current Omicron wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Population-specific psychological crisis intervention is warranted to improve the quality of epidemic prevention methods and to promote the mental well-being of the public.

Abstract
Mental illness and substance use disorders have been increasing worldwide. Mental illness has a significant impact upon the lives of the individual as well as their loved ones. Mental disorders are known to result in a high level of disability. This article provides a comparative review of the epidemiology of mental disorders in Australia and India, summarizing and comparing prevalence rates in both countries based upon available data. Overall, it is evident that Australia has higher prevalence rates of mental disorders than India, across most diagnostic groups. Australia has the highest prevalence of anxiety disorders whereas India has the highest prevalence of substance use disorders; including tobacco use disorders. The next most prevalent mental disorders in India are depressive disorders. However, there are demographic parameters such as gender and age as well as service-provision differences across the countries that need to be factored into any interpretation of the data. There are also problems associated with different diagnostic instruments with language and cultural nuances that may impact comparisons. We suggest that a joint epidemiological survey between the two countries would help better understand and delineate the key similarities pertaining to the epidemiology of mental disorders in Australia and India. This will in turn assist with the development of policy and treatment of mental disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a major public health challenge linked with several poor health outcomes and disabilities among adults aged 45 years and older in India. We aimed to describe the prevalence of depression and its association with a variety of sociodemographic correlates and co-existing health conditions for this age group in India and its states. METHODS In this prospective cohort study, data from wave 1 (baseline) of the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India were used to estimate the national and subnational state level age-standardised prevalence of depression-major depressive episodes-using the internationally validated Composite International Diagnostic Interview-Short Form (CIDI-SF) scale. Hierarchical mixed effect multivariate logistic regression models were used to study the sociodemographic correlates and co-existing health conditions of major depressive episodes among the nationally representative sample of 72 250 adults aged 45 years and older from 35 states or union territories (except the state of Sikkim). Associations between depression and self-rated health, co-morbid conditions, functional health, and life satisfaction measures were also examined. FINDINGS A total of 40 335 (58·3%) females and 29 407 (41·7%) males aged 45 to 116 years (median age 58 years) participated. The overall age-standardised prevalence of depression based on CIDI-SF scale was 5·7% (95% CI 5·5-5·8) compared with 0·5% (0·5-0·6) self-reported prevalence of depression among adults aged 45 years and older in India. Wide sub-national variations were seen in depression prevalence, ranging from 0·8% (95% CI 0·3-1·3) in Mizoram state to 12·9% (11·6-14·2) in Madhya Pradesh. Prevalence was higher in females (6·3% [95% CI 6·1-6·6] vs 4·3% [4·1-4·6]) for India, and this higher prevalence was more pronounced in some of the northern states. The risk of depression was higher in those residing in rural areas, widowed, with no or low education, and in the poorest quintile. Depression showed a strong positive association with poor self-rated health (OR 2·39 [95% CI 2·21-2·59]; p<0·0001), with one or more limitations in the activities of daily living (ADL; OR 1·60 [1·46-1·75]; p<0·0001), instrumental ADL limitations (OR 1·51 [1·40-1·64]; p<0·0001), and low cognitive judgment of life satisfaction (OR 1·94 [95% CI 1·78-2·10]; p<0·0001). INTERPRETATION Despite the substantial burden, depression remains undiagnosed and strongly linked with poor health and wellbeing outcomes in adults aged 45 years and older in India. The ageing population of India and the subnational variations amplify the implications of this new evidence to address the substantial gaps in prevention and treatment of depression. Abstract
PURPOSE To identify the factors associated with frailty in patients with neurodegenerative diseases. METHODS Cross-sectional study, whose sample consisted of 150 patients diagnosed with neurodegenerative diseases seen at a speech-language therapy clinic in a reference hospital in southern Brazil. A secondary exploratory analysis of the medical records of patients treated at this clinic between April 2016 and May 2019 was performed. The information collected was sex, age, education, type of neurodegenerative disease, time of disease, frailty (Edmonton Frail Scale-EFS), swallowing (Northwestern Dysphagia Patient CheckSheet-NDPCS, Eating Assessment Tool-EAT 10), and cognition (Mini-Mental State Examination-MMSE and Montreal Cognitive Assessment-MoCA). Continuous quantitative variables were analyzed using mean and standard deviation and categorical quantitative variables from absolute and relative frequency, as well as their association with the outcome using the Chi-square test. Crude and adjusted Prevalence Ratios were assessed using Poisson regression with robust variance. All statistical tests were considered significant at a level of 5%. RESULTS The significant factors associated with frailty were the presence of oropharyngeal dysphagia and altered cognitive performance. Individuals with frailty have a higher prevalence of oropharyngeal dysphagia (PR= 1.772(1.094-2.872)), while cognition alteration presented a lower prevalence (PR= 0.335(0.128-0.873). CONCLUSION Oropharyngeal dysphagia can be an important clinical predictive factor for consideration in cases of frailty in patients with neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
It is challenging to treat symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), comorbid psychiatric disorders and ASD-associated symptoms. Some of the commonly used medications to treat these can, and frequently do have serious adverse side effects. Therefore, it is important to identify medications that are effective and with fewer side effects and negative outcomes. In this review, we looked at current evidence available for using the serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) class of medications in treating some of these often difficult to treat symptoms and behaviors. An extensive literature search was conducted using EBSCO.host. Our search algorithm identified 130 articles, 6 of which were deemed to meet criteria for the purpose of this review. Each of these six articles was independently reviewed and critically appraised. As a prototype of the SNRIs family, venlafaxine was found to be a useful adjuvant in children and adults with ASD for the treatment of self-injurious behaviors, aggression, and ADHD symptoms when used in doses lower than its antidepressant dosage. However, duloxetine was not found to show any added benefit in treatment of any of the comorbid symptoms and behaviors in ASD when compared to other antidepressants. On the other hand, milnacipran was reported to produce improvements in impulsivity, hyperactivity symptoms, and social functioning through reduction of inattention of ADHD when comorbid with ASD. Overall, SNRIs were shown variable effectiveness in treatment of these comorbid symptoms and behaviors in ASD.

Abstract
The purposes of this study were to evaluate the mental health among patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR) and to explore its' influencing factors. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Liaoning Province, China. A total of 200 patients volunteered to participate in the survey. Psycho-social variables included stress, self-efficacy, resilience, and social support. logistic regression analysis was used to explore the effect of psycho-social factors on depression and anxiety in DR patients. The prevalence of depression and anxiety was 25% and 13.5% among DR patients. Regression analysis showed that social support had a significant protective effect on depression (95%CI 0.931-0.997) and anxiety (95%CI 0.900-0.995). Stress had a significant acceleration of depression (95%CI 1.055-1.253) and anxiety (95%CI 1.120-1.457). Family history of diabetes (95%CI 1.856-18.057) and other chronic diseases (95%CI 1.485-12.508) were risk factors for anxiety. The high prevalence of depression (25.0%) and anxiety (13.5%) among DR patients should receive more attention in Chinese medical settings. Stress, social support, family history of diabetes and other chronic diseases seemed to be crucial in relation to depressive symptoms. Efficient interventions such as improving social support and decreasing stress with patients should be considered by health administrators aiming at alleviating depressive and anxiety among Chinese DR patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Europe, the incidence of psychotic disorder is high in certain migrant and minority ethnic groups (hence: 'minorities'). However, it is unknown how the incidence pattern for these groups varies within this continent. Our objective was to compare, across sites in France, Italy, Spain, the UK and the Netherlands, the incidence rates for minorities and the incidence rate ratios (IRRs, minorities v. the local reference population). METHODS The European Network of National Schizophrenia Networks Studying Gene-Environment Interactions (EU-GEI) study was conducted between 2010 and 2015. We analyzed data on incident cases of non-organic psychosis (International Classification of Diseases, 10th edition, codes F20-F33) from 13 sites. RESULTS The standardized incidence rates for minorities, combined into one category, varied from 12.2 in Valencia to 82.5 per 100 000 in Paris. These rates were generally high at sites with high rates for the reference population, and low at sites with low rates for the reference population. IRRs for minorities (combined into one category) varied from 0.70 (95% CI 0.32-1.53) in Valencia to 2.47 (95% CI 1.66-3.69) in Paris (test for interaction: p = 0.031). At most sites, IRRs were higher for persons from non-Western countries than for those from Western countries, with the highest IRRs for individuals from sub-Saharan Africa (adjusted IRR = 3.23, 95% CI 2.66-3.93). CONCLUSIONS Incidence rates vary by region of origin, region of destination and their combination. This suggests that they are strongly influenced by the social context.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a prevalent and disabling mental disorder that frequently co-occurs with a wide range of chronic conditions. Past evidence suggests that depression could be associated with the all-cause mortality and other disease mortality in Western populations, but little is known about the relationship in the Chinese population. Therefore, we investigated the associations between self-reported depression and all-cause and specific-cause mortality in Chinese adult populations. METHODS The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) was used to measure depressive symptoms among 8,151 adult participants drawn from the general population of Guizhou province, China. Participants death and cause of death were determined by linking with the official death records and certificates up to June 2021. Cause of death was coded according to ICD-10 then categorized as either cardiovascular disease (CVD, I00-I99), cancer (C00-C97) or other cause. Cox proportional hazard regression was used to examine the associations of self-reported depression with all-cause mortality and cause-specific mortality. RESULTS With a median follow-up of 7.4 years, 8,151 participants (52.6% women) at baseline were included in the analysis. The multivariable cox hazard regression models showed that participants with moderate and major depression had the highest hazard ratio (HR) for risk of all-cause mortality (HR=5.65, 95% CI 3.09-10.33), CVD mortality (HR=5.66, 95% CI 2.02-15.84), and cancer mortality (HR=7.21, 95% CI 2.00-25.99), compared with participants had no or mild depression. CONCLUSION Our findings suggested that depression was a risk factor for mortality, with greater risk for greater severity. Clinicians should be aware of the increased risk of mortality in populations with depression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We assessed the impact of a collaborative care intervention on anxiety symptoms among participants in India with comorbid depression, poorly controlled diabetes, and moderate to severe anxiety symptoms. METHOD We analyzed data from a randomized controlled trial conducted at four diabetes clinics in India. Participants received either collaborative care or usual care. We included only participants who scored ⩾10 on the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) at baseline. We estimated the effect of the intervention on clinically significant reduction in anxiety symptoms; we considered several potential baseline moderators and mediation by anti-depressant use. RESULTS One hundred and seventy-two participants scored 10 or above on the GAD-7 at baseline. Collaborative care participants were more likely than control participants to achieve a clinically significant reduction in anxiety symptoms at 6 and 12 months (65.7% vs. 41.4% at 12 months, p = 0.002); these differences were not sustained at 18 or 24 months. There was little evidence of moderation by participant characteristics at baseline, and effects were not mediated by anti-depressant use. CONCLUSIONS Collaborative care for the treatment of depression and type 2 diabetes can lead to clinically significant reductions in anxiety symptoms among patients with anxiety. Effects were notable during the active intervention period but not over the year post-intervention.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is one of the primary causes of disability and a major risk for suicide among patients living in the community. However, the suicide risks and care needs for safety among patients with TRD during the community reintegration process appear to be underestimated. This study aimed to investigate the association between community integration and suicide risks among patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) with sub-analysis by gender. METHODS Patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder were recruited upon psychiatrists' referral in two general hospitals in northern Taiwan during 2018-2019. The participants who experienced more than two failed treatments of antidepressants with partial remission were defined as TRD. A structured questionnaire was used to collect socio-demographic, suicidality, and psychosocial information. RESULTS In a total of 125 participants, gender difference was identified in certain community integration aspects such as home integration, productivity, and electronic social networking. The male participants appeared to have better involvement in social contact with internet but slightly less video link than women, while women had higher level of home integration in the past month. The participants who performed worse in the social integration and better home-based activity or productivity levels had higher suicide risks including suicide ideation and overall suicide risks. CONCLUSIONS Community integration levels of home, social, and productivity were associated with suicidality in terms of overall suicide risk and recent suicide ideation. Facilitation of community integration at home and life arrangements might reduce suicide risks in TRD patients.

Abstract
Depressive symptoms have become a serious public health issue worldwide. Several studies showed that air pollution, especially fine particulate matter (PM2.5), may be a risk factor of mental disorders. However, existing studies reported inconsistent results and little evidence is available in developing countries, like China. To fill the gap, in this study, we explored the relationship between ambient PM2.5 exposure and depressive symptoms among middle-aged and elderly Chinese adults in the Chinese Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The social and demographic variables and depressive symptoms were obtained from the Wave4 of CHARLS in 2018. PM2.5 concentrations were obtained from the national urban air quality real-time release platform of China Environmental Monitoring Station. We applied generalized linear mixed models to determine the association between PM2.5 exposure and depressive symptoms. A total of 15,105 middle-aged and elderly adults from CHARLS Wave4 were included in the analyses. We found positive impact of ambient PM2.5 on depressive symptoms for the exposure windows of 30-day, 60-day, 120-day, 180-day, 1-year and 2-year. The most significant increase was observed for 180-day moving average. For every 10 μg/m3 increment in PM2.5 exposure, the incidence of depressive symptoms increased by 9% (OR = 1.09; 95%CI: 1.05, 1.14) after adjusting for age, sex and residence. In interaction analyses, we found PM2.5 had weaker effect on depressive symptoms among people who used to drink alcohol (OR = 1.05; 95%CI: 1.00, 1.10) and exercise (OR = 1.10; 95%CI: 1.02, 1.18). People living in western China (OR = 1.09; 95%CI: 1.03, 1.16) were more vulnerable than those living in eastern China (OR = 0.99; 95%CI: 0.94, 1.05). In conclusion, exposure to PM2.5 was significantly associated with depressive symptoms in middle-aged and elder Chinese adults, particularly for people who never drink, with lower physical activity levels, or lived in western China.

Abstract
With increasing age, middle-aged and older persons face a series of physical and mental health problems. This study aimed to explore the latent relationships among age, functional disability, depression, and life satisfaction. The data were obtained from the Wave 2 (in 2013–2014) and Wave 3 (in 2015–2016) surveys of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The analytic sample in the present study included 15,950 individuals aged 45 years and over. The participants answered the same questions concerning depression and life satisfaction in both study waves, and functional disability was measured based on the activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living. Age was directly associated with functional disability, life satisfaction, and depression. Functional disability was positively correlated with depression and negatively correlated with life satisfaction. Functional disability strongly mediated the relationships among age, depression, and life satisfaction. Depression and life satisfaction were found to have enduring effects and effects on each other. Additionally, the model revealed a gender difference. Depression in middle-aged people should receive closer attention. Avoiding or improving functional disability may be an effective way to improve life satisfaction and reduce the level of depression in middle-aged and older persons. If prevention work successfully decreases depression, the life dissatisfaction of middle-aged and older people could be improved. Additionally, for the prevention of functional disability and depression and improvement in life satisfaction, gender differences need to be considered.

Abstract
PURPOSE Migrant and ethnic minority populations exhibit a higher incidence of psychotic disorders. The Ultra-High Risk for psychosis (UHR) paradigm provides an opportunity to explore the stage at which such factors influence the development of psychosis. In this systematic review, we collate and appraise the literature on the association between ethnicity and migrant status and the rate of identification of individuals at UHR, as well as their rate of transition to psychosis. METHODS We conducted a systematic review in the Ovid Medline, PsychINFO, Pubmed, CINAHL and EMBASE databases according to PRISMA guidelines. We included studies written in English that included an UHR cohort, provided a measure of ethnicity or migrant status, and examined the incidence, rate, or risk of UHR identification or transition to psychosis. RESULTS Of 2182 unique articles identified, seven fulfilled the criteria. One study found overrepresentation of UHR individuals from black ethnic groups, while another found underrepresentation. Two studies found increased rates of transition among certain ethnic groups and a further two found no association. Regarding migrant status, one study found that first-generation migrants were underrepresented in an UHR sample. Lastly, a lower transition rate in migrant populations was identified in one study, while two found no association. CONCLUSION Rates of UHR identification and transition according to ethnic and migrant status were inconsistent and insufficient to conclusively explain higher incidences of psychotic disorders among these groups. We discuss the clinical implications and avenues for future research, which is required to clarify the nature of the associations.

Abstract
Schizophrenia (SCZ) hospital re-admissions constitute a serious disease burden worldwide. Some studies have reported an association between air pollutants and hospital admissions for SCZ. However, evidence is scarce regarding the effects of ambient particulate matter (PM) on SCZ hospital re-admissions, especially in coastal cities in China. The purpose of this study was to examine whether PM affects the risk of SCZ hospital re-admission in the coastal Chinese city of Qingdao. Daily SCZ hospital re-admissions, daily air pollutants, and meteorological factors from 2015 to 2019 were collected. A quasi-Poisson generalized linear regression model combined with distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was applied to model the exposure-lag-response relationship between PM and SCZ hospital re-admissions. The relative risks (RRs) were estimated for an inter-quartile range (IQR) increase in PM concentrations. Subgroup analyses by age and gender were conducted to identify the vulnerable subgroups. There were 6220 SCZ hospital re-admissions during 2015-2019. The results revealed that PM, including PM10 (particles with an aerodynamic diameter ≤10 μm), PMc (particles >2.5 μm but <10 μm), and PM2.5 (particles ≤2.5 μm), was positively correlated with SCZ hospital re-admissions. The strongest single-day effects all occurred on lag3 day, and the corresponding RRs were 1.07 (95% CI: 1.02-1.11) for PM10, 1.03 (95% CI: 1.00-1.07) for PMc, and 1.05 (95% CI: 1.01-1.09) for PM2.5 per IQR increase. Stronger associations were observed in males and younger individuals (<45 years). Our findings suggest that PM exposure is associated with increased risk of SCZ hospital re-admission. Active intervention measures against PM exposure should be taken to reduce the risk of SCZ hospital re-admission, especially for males and younger individuals.

Abstract
This study addressed the critical problems of depression, anxiety, and stress, which are prevalent among students pursuing higher education. Specifically, this article aimed to study the level of psychological distress due to the COVID-19 pandemic experienced by young people studying in higher education institutions in India. The study also attempted to identify various coping strategies students adopted to overcome this difficult time. Following a descriptive research design, this study used surveys to collect primary data from 235 students in graduate and undergraduate programs in India. The DASS-21 scale was used to check the levels of depression, anxiety, and stress students experienced. Furthermore, a four-point COPE scale was used to identify coping strategies students adopted. The results showed that students experienced high levels of stress and anxiety during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Although depression levels were not alarming, most students were worried about several aspects of their lives and careers. However, because the data were collected from a relatively small sample, the study is likely not generalisable. Furthermore, most of the data were collected online, which has its limitations. This research likely has significant implications for various stakeholders, such as students, parents, institutions, counsellors, and government and non-government bodies, because it may help them take appropriate actions. These research contributions are original and novel, because the COVID-19 pandemic has posed unprecedented challenges and inspired new solutions to the problems of students and society.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In China, depressive disorders have been estimated to be the second leading cause of years lived with disability. However, nationally representative epidemiological data for depressive disorders, in particular use of mental health services by adults with these disorders, are unavailable in China. The present study, part of the China Mental Health Survey, 2012-15, aims to describe the socioeconomic characteristics and the use of mental health services in people with depressive disorders in China. METHODS The China Mental Health Survey was a cross-sectional epidemiological survey of mental disorders in a multistage clustered-area probability sample of adults of Chinese nationality (≥18 years) from 157 nationwide representative population-based disease surveillance points in 31 provinces across China. Trained investigators interviewed the participants with the Composite International Diagnostic Interview 3.0 to ascertain the presence of lifetime and 12-month depressive disorders according to DSM-IV criteria, including major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, and depressive disorder not otherwise specified. Participants with 12-month depressive disorders were asked whether they received any treatment for their emotional problems during the past 12 months and, if so, the specific types of treatment providers. The Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS) was used to assess impairments associated with 12-month depressive symptoms. Data-quality control procedures included logic check by computers, sequential recording check, and phone-call check by the quality controllers, and reinterview check by the psychiatrists. Data were weighted according to the age-sex-residence distribution data from China's 2010 census population survey to adjust for differential probabilities of selection and differential response, as well as to post-stratify the sample to match the population distribution. FINDINGS 28 140 respondents (12 537 [44·6%] men and 15 603 [55·4%] women) completed the survey between July 22, 2013, and March 5, 2015. Ethnicity data (Han or non-Han) were collected for only a subsample. Prevalence of any depressive disorders was higher in women than men (lifetime prevalence odds ratio [OR] 1·44 [95% CI 1·20-1·72] and 12-month prevalence OR 1·41 [1·12-1·78]), in unemployed people than employed people (lifetime OR 2·38 [95% CI 1·68-3·38] and 12-month OR 2·80 [95% CI 1·88-4·18]), and in people who were separated, widowed, or divorced compared with those who were married or cohabiting (lifetime OR 1·87 [95% CI 1·39-2·51] and 12-month OR 1·85 [95% CI 1·40-2·46]). Overall, 574 (weighted % 75·9%) of 744 people with 12-month depressive disorders had role impairment of any SDS domain: 439 (83·6%) of 534 respondents with major depressive disorder, 207 (79·8%) of 254 respondents with dysthymic disorder, and 122 (59·9%) of 189 respondents with depressive disorder not otherwise specified. Only an estimated 84 (weighted % 9·5%) of 1007 participants with 12-month depressive disorders were treated in any treatment sector: 38 (3·6%) in speciality mental health, 20 (1·5%) in general medical, two (0·3%) in human services, and 21 (2·7%) in complementary and alternative medicine. Only 12 (0·5%) of 1007 participants with depressive disorders were treated adequately. INTERPRETATION Depressive disorders in China were more prevalent in women than men, unemployed people than employed, and those who were separated, widowed, or divorced than people who were married or cohabiting. Most people with depressive disorders reported social impairment. Treatment rates were very low, and few people received adequate treatment. National programmes are needed to remove barriers to availability, accessibility, and acceptability of care for depression in China. Abstract
Background The association between anxiety and atrial fibrillation (AF) remains unclear. Moreover, this association has rarely been studied in Chinese individuals aged 60 years or older. This study investigated the association between anxiety and AF in a community-based case-control study of older adult residents in urban China. Methods The cases and controls were from a community-based study conducted in the Jingansi community in Shanghai, China, between January 2010 and December 2012. A total of 3622 residents aged 60 years or older without severe vision, hearing, or speaking impairments were eligible to participate in the physical examinations and questionnaire survey. AF was assessed based on a previous physician’s diagnosis, electrocardiogram, ambulatory electrocardiogram, or echocardiogram. Anxiety was evaluated using the Zung Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (ZSAS). Using the AF group as a reference, the control group consisted of randomly selected age- and sex-matched individuals in a 1:5 ratio (case:control = 1:5). The association between anxiety and AF in the AF group and the multifactor-matched control group was explored using logistic regression. Results In the AF and control groups, after adjusting for a history of coronary heart disease, valvular heart disease, hypertension, stroke, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes, as well as depression score, ZSAS scores (odds ratio 1.07; 95% confidence interval 1.02–1.12; p = 0.003), and anxiety symptoms (odds ratio 3.94; 95% confidence interval 1.06–14.70; p = 0.041) were associated with AF. Conclusions Anxiety symptoms were associated with AF in a Chinese older population. This suggests that older adults who have anxiety symptoms may need psychological intervention or treatment in daily life and care.

Abstract
Chronic lung diseases (CLDs) can reduce patients’ quality of life. However, evidence for the relationship between CLD and occurrence with depressive symptoms remains unclear. This study aims to determine the associations between CLD and depressive symptoms incidence, using the data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). CLD was identified via survey questionnaire and hospitalization. The follow-up survey was conducted in 2018 and depressive symptoms were assessed by the 10-item Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-10). A total of 10,508 participants were studied with an average follow-up period of 3 years. A total of 2706 patients (25.8%) with newly diagnosed depressive symptoms were identified. The standardized incidence rate of depressive symptoms in baseline population with and without chronic pulmonary disease was 11.9/100 and 8.3/100 person-years, respectively. The Cox proportional risk model showed that CLD was a significant predictor of depressive symptoms (HR: 1.449, 95% CI: 1.235–1.700) after adjusting for covariates, and the HRs of depressive symptoms were higher in those participants with current smoking (HR: 1.761, 95% CI: 1.319–2.352), men (HR: 1.529, 95% CI: 1.236–1.892), living in rural areas (HR: 1.671, 95% CI: 1.229–2.272), with dyslipidemia (HR: 1.896, 95% CI: 1.180–3.045), and suffering from comorbidity (HR: 1.518, 95% CI: 1.104–2.087) at baseline survey. CLD was an independent risk factor of depressive symptoms in China. The mental health of CLD patients deserves more attention.

Abstract
Major Depressive disorder (MDD) is a chronic, episodic disorder which manifests with disturbance in mood, interest, cognition and vegetative symptoms. It has major impact on the quality of life of the patients, by affecting their physical, mental, personal, social, and spiritual wellbeing. Vishada and avasada represents minor depressive episodes and MDD can be equated to Kaphaja Unmada. Current case presented with sadness, worthlessness, helplessness, death wishes, disturbed sleep and was diagnosed as MDD as per DSM V criteria. Ayurveda diagnosis was Kaphaja Unmada involving kapha-dominant vata and tama dosha. Mental examination revealed derangement of mana (mind), buddhi (intellect), smruti (memory), bhakti (desire), sheela (temperament), chesta (psychomotor activity) and achara (conduct) components. Patient was Avara Satwa. Management was planned with integrative treatment comprising of Yukti vypasharaya (pharmacological), Satwawajaya (counselling) and daiwivyapashraya (spiritual-based techniques). Management was with snehapana (internal oleation), virechana (gut cleansing), sarvanga abhyanga (massage of whole body with medicated oil) followed by bashpa sweda (steam therapy to whole body), shirodhara (dripping of medicated oil on fore head), shiropichu (transcranial drug administration by placing cotton pad dipped in medicated oil), katibasti (holding of medicated oil in well-prepared from dough), satwavajaya chikitsa, and daiwi vyapashraya chikitsa. Conventional psychopharmacological interventions taken since last year were tapered and discontinued. Treatment continued for 352 days which included 13 days of hospitalized treatment and follow-ups. Intervention outcome showed reduction in Hamilton depression Rating scores from 31 to 6. Patient's self-assessed worry reduced from 16 h/day to 2 h/day, self-assessed daily relaxed state improved from ½ hour/day to 14 h/day. Patient showed complete remission by 180th day of intervention. Improvements sustained even during the non-interventional observation period. Thus, the Ayurvedic integrative management showed efficacy in management of MDD.

Abstract
The COVID-19 is creating panic among people around the world and is causing a huge public mental health crisis. Large numbers of observational studies focused on the prevalence of psychological problems during the COVID-19 pandemic were published. It is essential to conduct a meta-analysis of the prevalence of different psychological statuses to insight the psychological reactions of general population during the COVID-19 epidemic in China. Sixty six observational studies about the psychological statuses of people during the COVID-19 were included, searching up to 1 December 2020. Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) was used to evaluate the quality of the included studies. OpenMeta[Analyst] was used for the data analysis. High prevalence of acute stress and fear symptoms were observed in the early period of the epidemic. Additionally, anxiety and depression symptoms continued at a high prevalence rate during the epidemic. It should alert the lasting mental health problems and the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental disorders. Systematic Review Registration: PROSPERO CRD 42020171485.

Abstract
Background: Neurological disorders are the leading cause of long-term disability and the second leading cause of death in the world. We aimed to characterize the long-term trends in mortality and disease burden of selected neurological disorders and quantitatively analyze the contributions of demographic and non-demographic factors on the mortality of selected neurological disorders in Shanghai, China, 1995–2018. Methods: Mortality data were derived from the Vital Statistics System of Pudong New Area, Shanghai, China, during 1995–2018. Temporal trends for the mortality rates and burden of selected neurological disorders were analyzed by Joinpoint Regression Program. Years of life lost (YLL) was used to analyze the burden of disease. The increasing mortality rates related to demographic and non-demographic factors were estimated by the decomposition method. Results: A total of 4432 deaths from selected neurological disorders occurred during 1995–2018, accounting for 0.98% of total deaths. The crude mortality rates (CMR) and age-standardized mortality rates (ASMRW) of neurological disorders were 7.14/105 person–years and 4.08/105 person–years, respectively. Extrapyramidal and movement disorders, other degenerative diseases of the nervous system, and episodic and paroxysmal disorders were the three leading causes of mortality and YLL of selected neurological disorders. The CMR, ASMRW, and rate of YLL for deaths from selected neurological disorders showed significantly increasing trends in males, females, and the total population during 1995–2018 (all P < 0.001). The contribution rates of increased values of CMR related to demographic factors were more evident than non-demographic factors. Conclusion: The mortality rate and rate of YLL for death from selected neurological disorders increased significantly during 1995–2018 in Pudong New Area, Shanghai. The demographic factors, particularly aging, might be related to an increase in the mortality of neurological disorders. More effective prevention strategies are needed to prevent the aging-related death and burden from neurological disorders in the future.

Abstract
Background The practice patterns of psychiatrists have changed over the last two decades. Objectives This study describes the pattern of prescribing psychotropic drugs in treating common psychiatric disorders, and investigates the rate of polypharmacy and potential drug-drug interactions. Setting Psychiatry governmental outpatient clinic in the north of West Bank, Palestine. Methods Cross-sectional study that included all prescriptions which were issued over the period October 2018 to January 2019, for patients diagnosed with schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder and schizoaffective disorders, and checked for the presence and the grade of potential drug-drug interactions using "Medscape drug interactions checker". Main outcome measure Prescribing patterns of psychotropic drugs. Results A total of 1045 prescriptions were examined. The mean age of the patients was 47.3 years (SD = 13.6), two-thirds of the patients (64.5%) were males. Fifty-two percent of the patients were diagnosed with schizophrenia while 15.2% were diagnosed with depression. The later third was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, schizoaffective and anxiety disorders (15.8%, 11.1% and 5.1% respectively). The most commonly prescribed drugs were typical antipsychotics for schizophrenia, bipolar and schizoaffective disorders, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors for depression and tricyclic anti-depressants for anxiety. Polypharmacy was found in 877 prescriptions (84%), and drug-drug interactions (DDIs) were identified in 823 (94%) prescriptions. The DDIs were classified as minor (4, 0.5%), significant (418, 50.8%) and serious (401, 48.7%). Conclusions Our results suggest that the pharmacotherapy of psychiatric disorders in Palestine may not be in accordance to international guidelines and the incidence of polypharmacy and DDIs is high.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Leprosy is a Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) known to cause stigma and discrimination in low-and middle-income countries. It often results in visible impairments, thus pre-disposing to poor mental health. Aim of the study was to estimate the prevalence of depression and anxiety among people affected by Leprosy and to determine the associated factors. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS A multi-centric, cross-sectional study was carried out in four leprosy endemic states of India-Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu in randomly selected blocks (a sub-unit of district), from one district in each state. From selected blocks those registered for leprosy treatment at public health or referral centres, people above the age of 18 years were interviewed with PHQ-9 and GAD-7 questionnaires for Depression and Anxiety, respectively. Disease profile like leprosy classification, deformity grade, number and site of the patches and socio-economic status were collected along with individual data. Of the total 220 respondents, prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms was, 33% (73) and 19% (42), respectively. Presence of disability (47%) and Female gender (46%) were significantly associated with depression. Presence of disability (32%), Lower income group (27%) and low education (22%) were significantly associated with symptoms of anxiety. As the severity of disability increased, risk of developing depression and anxiety increased. CONCLUSION The study indicates that more than 30% of people affected by leprosy have mental health problems, which emphasizes the importance of mental health care services in leprosy. Women, those who had lower level of education, those belonging to lower socio-economic status and those with any level of disability due to leprosy are at risk of developing depression and/or anxiety. The study concludes more attention to be paid to the categories identified to be at risk.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We estimate the prevalence of common mental disorders (CMD) among older adults and compare them with that of younger adults at the national level. METHOD We analysed data on older adults from the National Mental Health Survey of India undertaken across 6 regions and 12 states of India during 2015-16. Multi-stage cluster sampling technique was adopted which permitted state level and subsequently pooled national estimates. Mini International NeuroPsychiatric Interview (MINI) adult version 6.0 was used for measuring psychiatric morbidity. RESULTS Older adults had a higher lifetime (6.93%) and current (3.53%) prevalence of depressive disorders as compared to the younger adults (4.96% and 2.54%). There was no difference in the prevalence of anxiety disorders in different agegroups. The most prevalent anxiety disorder in older adults was specific phobias (1.72%) followed by agoraphobia (1.6%). All CMD in the older population were more common in females, those living in urban metros, the unemployed, who were not currently married and those with lower household income. DISCUSSION These findings support planning better mental health policies and programs for older adults in India.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is a major mental disorder that imposes a considerable burden on health. Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk for depression. Numerous studies have reported the prevalence of depression or depressive symptoms among MSM in China. However, the estimates have varied substantially between studies. This meta-analysis aimed to establish the pooled prevalence of depression or depressive symptoms among Chinese MSM to attract public attention. METHOD A systematic search of several electronic databases and a subsequent manual search was performed to identify relevant studies. A random effects model was adopted to calculate the pooled prevalence of depression or depressive symptoms. Heterogeneity between studies and publication bias was also assessed. RESULTS A total of 54 articles with a sample size of 21,950 MSM were analysed. The pooled prevalence of depression or depressive symptoms among MSM was 40.0% (95% CI: 37.9%-45.0%). Substantial heterogeneity was observed across individual studies. The pooled summary estimate stratified by screening instruments and cutoff scores ranged from 19.0% to 60.2%. Subgroup analysis indicated that survey dates, sampling method, HIV infection status and occupation can partially contribute to the between-study heterogeneity. LIMITATIONS The findings should be interpreted with caution because of several limitations related to the heterogeneity across studies, sampling method and quality assessment. CONCLUSIONS Overall, the reported prevalence of depression or depressive symptoms among Chinese MSM was fairly high. The study suggested that more attention and effective intervention programmes are urgently provided to prevent and improve mental health issues among Chinese MSM.

Abstract
Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent group of mental disorders globally, leading to considerable losses in health, functioning and increase of medical costs. Till now, the search for novel pharmacological treatments is driven by the growing medical need to improve on the effectiveness and the side effect profile of existing drugs. In central nervous system, the mitochondrially located translocator protein (18 kDa, TSPO) serves as the rate-limiting step for neurosteroidogenesis and influences GABAergic transmission. Since 5-HT is one of the most comprehensively studied neurotransmitter systems in the anxiety field, in the present study, we want to investigate whether 5-HT system is involved in the anxiolytic-like effects of YL-IPA08, a novel TSPO ligand designed and synthesized at our institute. Our data showed that YL-IPA08 could potentiate the 5-HTP-induced head-twitch response, and the anxiolytic-like effect of YL-IPA08 was abolished by pCPA or 5,7-DHT pretreatment in mice. Furthermore, we found that YL-IPA08 increased the extracellular levels of 5-HT in the rat ventral hippocampus in freely moving rat using the rapid and validated HPLC coupled with microdialysis. In addition, 5-HT level was positively correlated with the level of allopregnanolone. The above results suggest that 5-HT neurotransmission may play a critical role in the anxiolytic-like effects of YL-IPA08.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) have a high suicide risk. Some evidence suggests that uric acid (UA) may be involved in the pathophysiology of MDD. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether serum UA levels were associated with suicide risk in MDD patients. METHODS One hundred four female patients with MDD (52 patients with suicide risk and 52 patients without suicide risk) and 52 healthy individuals were included in this study. The suicide risk was evaluated by Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I.). Fasting serum levels of UA, as well as glucose, lipid and renal function indicators were measured. RESULTS Serum UA levels in MDD patients with suicide risk (245.01 ± 55.44 μmol/L) were significantly lower than those in MDD patients without suicide risk (274.17 ± 72.65 μmol/L) (p = 0.017) and healthy controls (271.42 ± 55.25 μmol/L) (p = 0.030). There was no difference in serum UA levels between the MDD patients without suicide risk and healthy controls (p = 0.821). Binary logistic regression analysis revealed a significant relationship between suicide risk and decreased serum UA levels (OR = 0.989, p = 0.010) in MDD patients. CONCLUSION Decreased serum UA levels were associated with suicide risk in MDD patients. Purinergic system dysfunction may be involved in the neurobiological basis of suicide risk in these patients.

Abstract
Depression is one of the leading causes of disability, but the etiology remains unclear. Recently, it has been suggested that air pollution is a potential risk factor for depression. However, the results remained inconsistent. So we conducted this study to assess the association between short-term exposure to ambient air pollution and hospital visits for depression in China. Daily hospital visits for depression from January 18, 2013 to June 10, 2018 were extracted from a regional health information system (HIS) covered 1.34 million population in Ningbo, China. We collected daily air pollutant concentrations and meteorological data from environmental air quality monitoring sites and meteorological stations in the study area. Quasi-Poisson regression models with generalized additive models (GAM) were applied to explore the associations between air pollution and hospital visits for depression. Stratified analyses were also conducted by gender, age, and season to examine the effects modification. The results disclosed that air pollutants including PM2.5, PM10, SO2, CO, and NO2 were positively correlated with hospital visits for depression. The strongest effects all occurred on lag0 (the same) day, and the corresponding excess risks (ERs) were 2.59 (95%CI: 0.72, 4.49) for PM2.5, 3.08 (95%CI: 1.05, 5.16) for PM10, 3.22 (95%CI: 1.16, 5.32) for SO2, 4.38 (95%CI: 1.83, 6.99) for CO, and 4.94 (95%CI: 2.03, 7.92) for NO2 per IQR increase, respectively. The associations were found to be stronger in the elderly (≥65 years) and cold season. Furthermore, the effects of CO and NO2 remained significant in most two-pollutant models, suggesting that traffic-related air pollutants might be more important triggers of depression.

Abstract
To determine whether repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the visual cortex (VC) provides effective and well-tolerated treatment and whether magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measures functional change of the VC as a biomarker of therapeutic effect in major depressive disorder (MDD), we performed a sham-controlled, double-blind, randomized, three-arm VC rTMS treatment study in 74 MDD patients. Neuronavigated rTMS (10 Hz, 90% of resting motor threshold, 1,600 pulses over 20 min twice per day) was performed over the VC for five days. Clinical outcome was measured by Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-24) at days 0, 1, 3, 5 and after terminating rTMS, with follow-up at four weeks. MRI was measured at days 0 and 5. The individualized group exhibited the greatest change in HAMD-24 scores after VC rTMS for 5 days (F=5.53, P=0.005), which were maintained during follow-up period (F=4.22, P=0.016). All patients reported good tolerance. Changes in VC task-related functional MRI correlated with symptomatic reduction in the individualized group. Treatment reduced the initially abnormal increase in resting state functional connectivity from the VC to the pre/subgenual anterior cingulate cortex at day 5, especially in the individualized group. We demonstrated therapeutic potential and good tolerance of VC rTMS in MDD patients, indicated by biomarkers of fMRI measurement.
