Temporal and spatial evolution of different heavy metal fractions and correlation with environmental factors after prolonged acid mine drainage irrigation: A column experiment

Acid mine drainage (AMD) has global significance due to its low pH and elevated heavy metal content, which have received widespread attention. After AMD irrigation in mining areas, heavy metals are distributed among soil layers, but the influencing factors and mechanisms remain unclear. AMD contamination of surrounding soil is primarily attributed to surface runoff and irrigation and causes significant environmental degradation. A laboratory soil column experiment was conducted to investigate the temporal and spatial distribution of the heavy metals Cd and Cu, as well as the impact of key environmental factors on the migration and transformation of these heavy metals following long-term soil pollution by AMD. After AMD addition, the soil exhibited a significant increase in acidity, accompanied by notable alterations in various environmental parameters, including soil pH, Eh, Fe(II) content, and iron oxide content. Over time, Cd and Cu in the soil mainly existed in the exchangeable and carbonate-bound fractions. In spatial terms, exchangeable Cu increased with increasing depth. Pearson correlation analysis indicated significant negative correlations between pH and Cu, Cd, and Eh in pore water, as well as negative correlations between pH and the exchangeable fraction of Cd (F1), carbonate-bound fraction of Cd (F2), and exchangeable fraction of Cu (F1) in the solid phase. Additionally, a positive correlation was observed between pH and the residual fraction of Cu (F5). Furthermore, the soil total Cd content exhibited a positive correlation with pyrophosphate-Fe (Fep) and dithionite-Fe (Fed), while CdF1, CdF2, total Cu, and CuF1 displayed positive correlations with Fep. Our findings indicate that the presence of AMD in soil leads to alterations in the chemical fractions of Cd and Cu, resulting in enhanced bioavailability. These results offer valuable insights for developing effective remediation strategies for soils near mining sites.

Protaetia brevitarsis larvae produce frass that can be used as an additive to immobilize Cd and improve fertility in alkaline soils

Bioconversion of agricultural waste by Protaetia brevitarsis larvae (PBL) holds significant promise for producing high-quality frass organic amendments. However, the effects and mechanisms of PBL frass on Cd immobilization in an alkaline environment remain poorly understood. In this study, three types of frass, namely maize straw frass (MF), rice straw frass (RF), and sawdust frass (SF), were produced by feeding PBL. The Cd immobilization efficiencies of three frass in alkaline solutions and soils were investigated through batch sorption and incubation experiments, and spectroscopic techniques were employed to elucidate the sorption mechanisms of Cd onto different frass at the molecular level. The results showed that MF proved to be an efficient sorbent for Cd in alkaline solutions (176.67-227.27 mg g-1). X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy indicated that Cd immobilization in frass is primarily attributed to the association with organic matter (OM-Cd, 78-90%). And MF had more oxygen-containing functional groups than the other frass. In weakly alkaline soils, MF application (0.5-1.5%) significantly decreased Cd bioavailability (5.65-18.48%) and concurrently improved soil nutrients (2.21-56.79%). Redundancy analysis (RDA) unveiled that pH, CEC, and available P were important factors controlling Cd fractions. Path analysis demonstrated that MF application affected Cd bioavailability directly and indirectly by influencing soil chemical properties and nutrients. In summary, MF, the product of PBL-mediated conversion maize straw, demonstrated promise as an effective organic amendment for Cd immobilization and fertility improvement in alkaline soils.

A method for studying the influence of Mn oxyhydroxides on the trace element content of aquatic bryophytes

The main objective of this study was to develop and test a method of separating externally deposited Mn oxyhydroxides and co-precipitated elements from samples of aquatic moss (the moss Fontinalis antipyretica). The method, which uses 0.1 M hydroxylamine to dissolve the oxyhydroxides, was tested with samples collected in rivers with slightly acidic, well‑oxygenated waters, where high rates of Mn precipitation occur. The method was effective (it extracted up to 84 % of the Mn) and selective (Fe oxyhydroxides were not extracted). The elements Ba, Cd, Zn and Ni were associated with the Mn oxyhydroxides, while Al, As, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg and Pb were not. Deposition of Mn therefore increased the concentration of some elements in the moss samples. However, as Mn precipitation depends on Eh and pH, which are independent of the concentrations of the elements in water, the relationship between water and moss element concentrations is not clear (i.e. the data are noisy). This is a problem in biomonitoring studies, which assume a close relationship between element concentrations in moss and water. The value of the proposed extraction method is that it can be used to correct the effect of Mn deposition. We present an example of this correction applied to the Cd concentrations in the test data. We found that the noise introduced by the Mn, including age-related effects (observed by comparing concentrations in 0-2.5 and 2.2-5.0 cm sections from the shoot apex), can be reduced. Additionally, the correction revealed recent increases in Cd concentrations in one site that were not observed in the uncorrected data. Another finding of interest was the low content of total Mn and different extractability (of most elements) observed in moss samples collected in alkaline waters. Finally, we discuss how future studies designed for different environmental scenarios can benefit from application of the proposed method.

Preparation and characterization of high-ash coal slime-based soil amendment as well as investigations of its adsorption performance and mechanisms towards heavy metals in soil

In this study, high-ash coal slime-based mineral soil amendment (MSA) was prepared via the hydrothermal method using high-ash coal slime as raw material, supplemented with activator calcium oxide and additive KOH solution. After hydrothermal treatment at 230 °C for 5 h, the original crystalline phase (quartz and kaolinite) of the high-ash slime was completely transformed into hydrotalcite zeolite, tobermorite, and silicate of potassium aluminosilicate, which has the largest specific surface area. The adsorption of Pb2+ and Cd2+ was adherent to the kinetic equation of secondary adsorption and Freundlich models, and the removal of Pb2+ and Cd2+ reached up to 362.58 mg g-1 and 64.67 mg g-1. The successive releases of SiO2 and CaO from MSA conformed to the Elovich equation, whereas the releases of SiO2 in Cd-containing environments and CaO in Pb- and Cd-containing environments more closely conformed to the power function; the releases of K2O all conformed to the first-order kinetic equation. The presence of Pb2+ and Cd2+ in the environment promotes the release of potassium and calcium elements with MSA's ion-exchange ability, and attenuates the release of silicon elements. Combining Pb2+ and Cd2+ with silicon resulted in the intolerant precipitation of 3PbO·2SiO2 and Cd2SiO4. The mineral precipitation mechanism is the most important mechanism of MSA in immobilizing heavy metals, accounting for 72.7%-80.5% of the total adsorption. Further contaminated soil immobilization experiments also showed that the application of MSA significantly reduced the bioavailability of soil heavy metals. When the MSA addition amount was 1.6%, the residual state increased by 63.58%. In conclusion, preparing MSA may effectively utilize coal-based solid waste with high added value.

Leaching behaviour of 226Ra from uranium tailings and adsorption behaviour in geotechnical medias

The leaching process of uranium tailings is a typical water-rock interaction. The release of 226Ra from uranium tailings depends on the nuclides outside the intrinsic properties of uranium tailings on the one hand, and is influenced by the water medium on the other. In this paper, a uranium tailings repository in southern China was used as a research object, and uranium tailings at different depths were collected by drilling samples and mixed to analyze the 226Ra occurrence states. Static dissolution leaching experiments of 226Ra under different pH conditions, solid-liquid ratio conditions, and ionic strength conditions were carried out, and the adsorption and desorption behaviours of 226Ra in five representative stratigraphic media were investigated. The results show that 226Ra has a strong adsorption capacity in representative strata, with adsorption distribution coefficient Kd values ranging from 1.07E+02 to 1.29E+03 (mL/g) and desorption distribution coefficients ranging from 4.97E+02 to 2.71E+03 (mL/g), but the adsorption is reversible. The 226Ra in uranium tailings exists mainly in the residual and water-soluble states, and the release of 226Ra from uranium tailings under different conditions is mainly from the water-soluble and exchangeable state fractions. Low pH conditions, low solid-liquid ratio conditions and high ionic strength conditions are favourable to the release of 226Ra from uranium tailings, so the release of 226Ra from uranium tailings can be reduced by means of adjusting the pH in the tailings and setting up a water barrier. The results of this research have important guiding significance for the management of existing uranium tailings ponds and the control of 226Ra migration in groundwater, which is conducive to guaranteeing the long-term safety, stability and sustainability of uranium mining sites.

Silicon and selenium alleviate cadmium toxicity in Artemisia selengensis Turcz by regulating the plant-rhizosphere

Soil cadmium (Cd) pollution has emerged as a pressing concern due to its deleterious impacts on both plant physiology and human well-being. Silicon (Si) is renowned for its ability to mitigate excessive Cd accumulation within plant cells and reduce the mobility of Cd in soil, whereas Selenium (Se) augments plant antioxidant capabilities and promotes rhizosphere microbial activity. However, research focusing on the simultaneous utilization of Si and Se to ameliorate plant Cd toxicity through multiple mechanisms within the plant-rhizosphere remains comparatively limited. This study combined hydroponic and pot experiments to investigate the effects of the combined application of Si and Se on Cd absorption and accumulation, as well as the growth and rhizosphere of A. selengensis Turcz under Cd stress. The results revealed that a strong synergistic effect was observed between both Si and Se. The combination of Si and Se significantly increased the activity and content of enzymes and non-enzyme antioxidants within A. selengensis Turcz, reduced Cd accumulation and inhibiting its translocation from roots to shoots. Moreover, Si and Se application improved the levels of reducing sugar, soluble protein, and vitamin C, while reducing nitrite content and Cd bioavailability. Furthermore, the experimental results showed that the combination of Si and Se not only increased the abundance of core rhizosphere microorganisms, but also stimulated the activity of soil enzymes, which effectively limited the migration of Cd in the soil. These findings provided valuable insights into the effective mitigation of soil Cd toxicity to plants and also the potential applications in improving plant quality and safety.

Rice rhizospheric effects and mechanism on soil cadmium bioavailability during silicon application

Exogenous Si mitigates the mobility and bioavailability of Cd in the soil, thereby alleviating its phytotoxicity. This study focused on specific Si-induced immobilisation effects within the rhizosphere (S1), near-rhizosphere (S2), and far-rhizosphere (S3) zones. Based on the rhizobox experiment, we found that applying Si significantly elevated soil pH, and the variation amplitudes in the S3 soil exceeded those in the S1 and S2 soils. Si-induced changes in the rhizosphere also included enhanced dissolved organic carbon and diminished soil Eh, particularly in the Si400 treatment. Meanwhile, the introduction of Si greatly enhanced the Fe2+ and Mn2+ concentrations in the S1 soil, but reduced them in the S2 soil. The rhizosphere effect of Si which enriched Fe2+ and Mn2+ subsequently promoted the formation of Fe and Mn oxides/hydro-oxides near the rice roots. Consequently, the addition of Si significantly reduced the available Cd concentrations in S1, surpassing the reductions in S2 and S3. Moreover, Si-treated rice exhibited increased Fe plaque generation and fixation on soil Cd, resulting in decreased Cd concentrations in rice tissues, accompanied by reduced Cd translocation from roots to shoots and shoots to grains. Structural equation modelling further highlighted that Si is essential in Cd availability in S1 and Fe plaque development, ultimately mitigating Cd accumulation in rice. Si-treated rice also exhibited higher biomass and grain yield than those of control groups. These findings provide valuable insights into Si-based strategies for addressing the Cd contamination of agricultural soils.

Biochar-nanoparticle combinations enhance the biogeochemical recovery of a post-mining soil

Here we addressed the capacity of distinct amendments to reduce arsenic (As), copper (Cu), selenium (Se) and zinc (Zn) associated risks and improve the biogeochemical functions of post-mining soil. To this, we examined nanoparticles (NPs) and/or biochar effects, combined with phytostabilization using Lolium perenne L. Soil samples were taken in a former metal mine surroundings. Ryegrass seeds were sown in pots containing different combinations of NPs (zero-valent iron (nZVI) or hydroxyapatite (nH)) (0 and 2 %), and biochar (0, 3 and 5 %). Plants were grown for 45 days and the plant yield and element accumulation were evaluated, also soil properties (element distribution within the soil fractions, fertility, and enzymatic activities associated with microbiota functionality and nutrient cycling) were determined. Results showed biochar-treated soil had a higher pH, and much higher organic carbon (C) content than control soil and NP-treated soils, and it revealed increased labile C, total N, and available P concentrations. Soil treatment with NP-biochar combinations increased exchangeable non-acid cation concentrations and reduced exchangeable Na%, improved soil fertility, reduced sodicity risk, and increased ryegrass biomass. Enzymatic activities, particularly dehydrogenase and glucosidase, increased upon the addition of biochar, and this effect was fostered by NPs. Most treatments led to a significant reduction of metal(loid)s contents in biomass, mitigating contamination risks. The two different NPs had similar effects in many parameters, nH outperformed nZVI in terms of increased nutrients, C content, and enzymatic activities. On the basis of our results, combined biochar-NP amendments use, specially nH, emerges as a potential post-mining soil restoration strategy.

Eisenia fetida-driven vermitechnology for the eco-friendly transformation of steel waste slag into organic amendment: An insight through microbial diversity and multi-model approach

The processing of steel waste slag from the black metallurgical sector seriously threatened the ecology. To counter these dangers, appropriate detoxification methods were required. Vermitechnology was one such strategy that could successfully convert this industrial waste into nutrient-rich products suitable for use in agriculture. This research primarily focuses on employing vermitechnology for the transformation of waste steel slag into vermicompost and to determine changes in microbial composition, nutrient cycling, and metal detoxification facilitated by earthworms (Eisenia fetida). Earthworm populations in steel waste vermibeds (sw-vermibeds) increased by 2.87-3.07 folds. T1(SW + CD-1:1) comparatively showed increased levels of nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Microbial and enzymatic parameters were more pronounced in treatment T1. The findings of phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) diversity demonstrate microbial diversity and fatty acid composition. Based on PLFA Sobol Sensitivity Analysis (SSA), PUFA and cyclo were the most sensitive inputs to the presence of heavy metal (HMs) concentrations in SW. In accordance with Taylor-based modelling, R-tree, and Mars were the most trusted regression models for predicting HMs toxicity on microbes. The bioavailable metal fractions of HMs (Fe, Ni, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Cr) decreased by 61-83%. The correlation was performed for 0 and 90 days for metal microbial interactions r (0 days), [BSR vs Fe, Cd, Cu, Ni = -0.99, -0.82, -0.43, -0.99] and r (90 days), [FDA vs Fe, Cu, Ni = -0.97, -0.47, -0.95]. Overall, the results indicated that T1(1:1 SW + CD) provided more favorable conditions for the development of microbes and Eisenia fetida. This research presents a new perspective to the world community on the transformation of harmful steel waste slag into advantageous biological resources by introducing a novel method of employing Eisenia fetida to remediate hazardous steel waste slag.

Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) mediated carbonate dissolution and arsenic release: Behavior and mechanisms

Carbonate bound arsenic act as an important reservoir for arsenic (As) in nature aquifers. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), one of the dominant bacterial species in reductive groundwater, profoundly affects the biogeochemical cycling of As. However, whether and how SRB act on the migration and transformation of carbonate bound arsenic remains to be elucidated. Batch culture experiment was employed using filed collected arsenic bearing calcite to investigate the release and species transformation of As by SRB. We found that arsenic in the carbonate samples mostly exist as inorganic As(V) (93.92 %) and As(III). The present of SRB significantly facilitated arsenic release from carbonates with a maximum of 22.3 μg/L. The main release mechanisms of As by SRB include 1) calcite dissolution and the liberate of arsenic in calcite lattices, and 2) the break of H-bonds frees arsenic absorbed on carbonate surface. A redistribution of arsenic during culture incubation took place which may due to the precipitation of As2Sx or secondary FeAl minerals. To our best knowledge, it is the first experimental study focusing on the release of carbonate bound arsenic by SRB. This study provides new insights into the fate and transport of arsenic mediated by microorganism within high arsenic groundwater-sediment system.

Impacts of solid waste management site on some toxic elements contamination of the surrounding soil in Akure, Nigeria

The distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr), their potential bioavailability, extent of contamination and potential risk of dumpsite and surrounding soil samples were appraised. Three (3) soil samples were collected randomly from within the dumpsite and three (3) soil samples were also obtained 50 m away from the perimeter fence of the dumpsite. PTEs in the bulk and fractionated portions were determined using inductively coupled plasma - optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The results showed that the concentrations of all the PTEs analysed were higher in the dumpsite soil samples than the surrounding samples, suggesting an impact of the dumpsite activities on the soil. The distribution of PTEs varied significantly within the different fractions of both the surrounding and dumpsite soils and their presence were more of anthropogenic than geogenic. The calculated contamination factor/pollution load index (CF/PLI) revealed that the surrounding soil samples fell within the range of moderate contamination, except for Cu and Cr which showed very high contamination. Cd showed the highest value (60.4) for potential ecological risk index (PERI) at the surrounding area. However, the value of Cd in the surrounding soil samples indicated a low ecological risk. The total concentrations of the PTEs were lower than their corresponding target values for both national and international standards, except for Cd (0.15 mg/kg) and Cu (37.3 mg/kg). The study concluded that the dumping of various wastes at the dumpsite was found to be a contributing factor to PTEs contamination of soil at the study area. Hence, an engineered landfill for Akure metropolis is recommended to replace the existing practice.

Driving factors for distribution and transformation of heavy metals speciation in a zinc smelting site

Heavy metal pollution at an abandoned smelter pose a significant risk to environmental health. However, remediation strategies are constrained by inadequate knowledge of the polymetallic distribution, speciation patterns, and transformation factors at these sites. This study investigates the influence of soil minerals, heavy metal occurrence forms, and environmental factors on heavy metal migration behaviors and speciation transformations. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the minerals associated with heavy metals are mainly hematite, franklinite, sphalerite, and galena. Sequential extraction results suggest that lead and zinc are primarily present in the organic-sulfide fractions (F4) and residual form (F5) in the soil, accounting for over 70% of the total heavy metal content. Zinc displayed greater instability in carbonate-bound (16%) and exchangeable (2%) forms. The migration and diffusion patterns of heavy metals in the subsurface environment were visualized through the simulation of labile state heavy metals, demonstrating high congruence with groundwater pollution distribution patterns. The key environmental factors influencing heavy metal stable states (F4 and F5) were assessed by integrating random forest models and redundancy analysis. Primary factors facilitating Pb transformation into stable states were available phosphorus, clay content, depth, and soil organic matter. For Zn, the principal drivers were Mn oxides, soil organic matter, clay content, and inorganic sulfur ions. These findings enhance understanding of the distribution and transformation of heavy metal speciation and can provide valuable insights into controlling heavy metal pollution at non-ferrous smelting sites.

The effect of heavy precipitation on the leaching of heavy metals from tropical coastal legacy tailings

The continued growth in demand for mineral resources has led to a large amount of mining wastes, which is a major challenge in the context of carbon neutrality and climate change. In this study, runoff migration, batch leaching, and column experiments were used to investigate the short-, medium-, and long-term leaching of heavy metals from legacy tailings, respectively; the cumulative metal release kinetic equations were established, and the long-term effects of tailings leaching were verified by HYDRUS-1D. In runoff migration experiments, surface dissolution of tailings and the co-migration of adsorbed soil particles by erosion were the main carriers in the early stages of leachate formation (Mn ∼ 65 mg/L and SO42- up to 2697.2 mg/L). Batch leaching tests showed that the concentration of heavy metals in soil leached by acid rain were 0.1 ∼ 22.0 μg/L for Cr, 0.7 ∼ 26.0 μg/L for Cu, 4.8 ∼ 5646.0 μg/L for Mn, 0.3 ∼ 232.4 μg/L for Ni, and 1.3 ∼ 448.0 μg/L for Zn. The results of column experiments indicated that some soluble components and metals with high mobility showed a significant decreasing trend at cumulative L/S ≤ 2. Additionally, the metals have higher leaching rates under TCLP conditions, as shown by Mn > Co > Zn > Cd > Ni > Cu > Pb > Cr. The fitting results of Langmuir equation were closer to the cumulative release of metals in the real case, and the release amounts of Mn, Zn, Co, and Ni were higher with 55, 5.84, 2.66, and 2.51 mg/kg, respectively. The water flow within tailings affects the spatial distribution of metals, which mainly exist in relatively stable chemical fractions (F3 + F4 + F5 > 90 %) after leaching. Numerical simulation verified that Mn in leachate has reached 8 mg/L at a scale of up to 100 years. The research results are expected to provide technical basis for realizing the resource utilization of tailings in the future.

Prediction of the bioaccessibility and accumulation of cadmium in the soil-rice-human system based on optimized DGT and BCR coupled models

Cadmium, as a typical heavy metal, has the potential to induce soil pollution and threaten human health through the soil-plant-human pathway. The conventional evaluation method based on the total content in soil cannot accurately represent the content migrated from the food chain to plants and the human body. Previous studies focused on the process of plant enrichment of heavy metals in soil, and very few studies directly predicted human exposure or risk through the labile state of Cd in soil. Hence, a relatively accurate and convenient prediction model of Cd release and translocation in the soil-rice-human system was developed. This model utilizes available Cd and soil parameters to predict the bioavailability of Cd in soil, as well as the in vitro bioaccessibility of Cd in cooked rice. The bioavailability of Cd was determined by the Diffusive Gradients in Thin-films technology and BCR sequential extraction procedure, offering in-situ quantification, which presents a significant advantage over traditional monitoring methods and aligns closely with the actual uptake of heavy metals by plants. The experimental results show that the prediction model based on the concentration of heavy metal forms measured by BCR sequential extraction procedure and diffusive gradients in thin-films technique can accurately predict the Cd uptake in rice grains, gastric and gastrointestinal phase (R2=0.712, 0.600 and 0.629). This model accurately predicts Cd bioavailability and bioaccessibility across the soil-rice-human pathway, informing actual human Cd intake, offering scientific support for developing more effective risk assessment methods.

Dispersant-enhanced migration of radiocesium among soil size fractions: A novel strategy for volume reduction of radioactively contaminated soil

In the aftermath of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident, a pioneering large-scale decontamination project was initiated, aiming to enable the return of evacuees. This project, the first of its kind in human history, involved the transportation of soils collected during decontamination to interim storage facilities. Before recycling or disposal, these soils undergo processes like volume reduction. However, there's a need for innovative methods to reduce volume effectively and treat secondary wastes more efficiently. The current study explores the impact of a dispersant, sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP), on the behavior of radiocesium (r-Cs: 137Cs) dynamics in different size fractions of radioactively contaminated soils from Fukushima. The solid-phase speciation analysis of Fukushima soils validated that at least 50% of the 137Cs or other minerals are associated with difficult-to-extract soil phases. Nonetheless, the low 137Cs/133Cs ratio in corresponding soil phases implies a slower r-Cs fixation mechanism. The wet-sieving of r-Cs contaminated soil fraction, < 2 mm, with SHMP, resulted in different soil subfractions (2000-212, 212-53, and < 53 μm). Following SHMP treatment, dispersion of > 92% of 137Cs associated with < 212 μm soil size fractions was observed. The migration of 137Cs towards smaller soil size fractions can be attributed to either SHMP-induced cation exchange or the formation of polyvalent complexes involving SHMP and soil minerals. The condensation of 137Cs in < 212 μm, as induced by SHMP, enabled the subsequent reuse of the larger soil fraction (> 212 μm), which was less contaminated. This study provides a new perspective on the effects of dispersants and contributes to a better understanding of the complex interactions among organic carbon, 137Cs, monovalent and polyvalent cations, and soil functional groups concerning the volume reduction of soils contaminated with r-Cs.

Sulfur enhances iron plaque formation and stress resistance to reduce the transfer of Cd and As in the soil-rice system

Sulfur plays an essential role in agricultural production, but few studies have been reported on how sulfur simultaneously impacts the transformation of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) in the soil-rice system. This research selected two soils co-contaminated with both Cd and As, varying in acidity and alkalinity levels, to study the impacts of elemental sulfur (S) and calcium sulfate (CaSO4) on the migration and accumulation of Cd and As by rice. Results indicated that two types of sulfur had a substantial (P < 0.05) impact on decreasing the contents of Cd (28.3-50.4 %) and As (20.1-38.6 %) in brown rice in acidic and alkaline soils. They also increased rice biomass (29.3-112.8 %) and reduced Cd transport coefficient (27.2-45.6 %) significantly (P < 0.05). Notably, sulfur augmented the generation of iron plaque on rice root surfaces, which increased the fixation of Cd (17.6-61.0 %) and As (14.0-45.9 %). SEM-EDS results also indicated that the rice root surface exhibited significant enrichment of Fe, Cd, and As. The mechanism of simultaneous Cd and As immobilization by sulfur application was mainly ascribed to the contribution of iron plaque. Additionally, sulfur reduced the contents of Cd and As in soil porewater and promoted the transformation of As(III) to As(V) to reduce the toxicity of As. The K-edge XAFS of As in iron plaque also confirmed that sulfur application significantly promoted As(III) oxidation. Sulfur also promoted the activities of antioxidant enzymes and the contents of NPT, GSH, and PCs in rice plants. In general, this study establishes a foundation for sulfur to lower As and Cd bioavailability in paddy soils, enhance iron plaque and rice resistance, and reduce heavy metal accumulation.

Pb contaminated soil from a lead-acid battery plant immobilized by municipal sludge and raw clay

Soil heavy metal pollution poses a serious threat to the eco-environment. Municipal sludge-based passivators and clay minerals have been widely applied to immobilize heavy metal contamination in soils. However, little is known about the immobilization effect and mechanisms of raw municipal sludge and clay in reducing the mobility and bioavailability of heavy metals in soils. Here, municipal sludge, raw clay and mixtures of thereof were used to remediate Pb-contaminated soil from a Pb-acid battery factory. The remediation performance was evaluated through acid leaching, sequential extraction, and plant assay. Results showed that the leachable Pb content in the soil decreased from 5.0 mg kg-1 to 4.8, 4.8 and 4.4 mg kg-1 after 30 d of remediation with MS and RC added at equal weights to give total dosage of 20, 40 wt% and 60 wt %, respectively. The leachable Pb further decreased to 1.7, 2.0 and 1.7 mg kg-1 after 180 d of remediation. Speciation analysis of the soil Pb indicated that the exchangeable and Fe-Mn oxide-bound Pb were transformed into residual Pb in the early stage of remediation, and the carbonate-bound Pb and organic matter-bound Pb were transformed into residual Pb in the later stage of remediation. As a result, Pb accumulation in mung beans decreased by 78.5%, 81.1% and 83.4% after 180 days of remediation. These results indicate that the leaching toxicity and phytotoxicity of Pb in remediated soils were significantly reduced, presenting a better and low-cost method for soil remediation.

Genomic characterization of a novel ureolytic bacteria, Lysinibacillus capsici TSBLM, and its application to the remediation of acidic heavy metal-contaminated soil

Soil heavy metal contamination is an essential challenge in ecological and environmental management, especially for acidic soils. Microbially induced carbonate precipitation (MICP) is an effective and environmentally friendly remediation technology for heavy metal contaminated sites, and one of the key factors for its realization lies in the microorganisms. In this study, Lysinibacillus capsici TSBLM was isolated from heavy metal contaminated soil around a gold mine, and inferred to be a novel ureolytic bacteria after phylogenomic inference and genome characterization. The urease of L. capsici TSBLM was analyzed by genetic analysis and molecular docking, and further applied this bacteria to the remediation of Cu and Pb in solution and acidic soils to investigate its biomineralization mechanism and practical application. The results revealed L. capsici TSBLM possessed a comprehensive urease gene cluster ureABCEFGD, and the encoded urease docked with urea at the lowest binding energy site (ΔG = -3.43 kcal/mol) connected to three amino acids threonine, aspartic, and alanine. The urease of L. capsici TSBLM is synthesized intracellularly but mainly functions extracellularly. L. capsici TSBLM removes Cu/Pb from the solution by generating heavy metal carbonates or co-precipitating with CaCO3 vaterite. For acidic heavy metal-contaminated soil, the carbonate-bound states of Cu and Pb increased significantly from 7 % to 16 % and from 23 % to 35 % after 30 days by L. capsici TSBLM. Soil pH improved additionally. L. capsici TSBLM maintained the dominant status in the remediated soil after 30 days, demonstrating good environmental adaptability and curing persistence. The results provided new strain resources and practical application references for the remediation of acidic heavy metal contaminated soil based on MICP.

Evaluating the efficacy of vermicomposted products in rain-fed wetland rice and predicting potential hazards from metal-contaminated tannery sludge using novel machine learning tactic

The study assessed the ecotoxicity and bioavailability of potential metals (PMs) from tannery waste sludge, alongside addressing the environmental concerns of overuse of chemical fertilizers, by comparing the impacts of organic vermicomposted tannery waste, chemical fertilizers, and sole application of tannery waste on soil and rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants. The results revealed that T3, which received high-quality vermicomposted tannery waste as an amendment, exhibited superior enzymatic characteristics compared to tannery sludge amended (TWS) treatments (T8, T9). After harvesting, vermicomposted tannery waste treatment (T3) showed a more significant decrease in PMs bioavailability. Accumulation of PMs in rice was minimal across all treatments except T8 and T9, where toxic tannery waste was present, resulting in a high-risk classification (class 5 < 0.01) according to the SAMOE risk assessment. Results from Fuzzy-TOPSIS, ANN, and Sobol sensitivity analyses (SSA) further indicated that elevated concentrations of PMs (Ni, Pb, Cr, Cu) adversely impacted soil-plant health synergy, with T3 showing a minimal risk in comparison to T8 and T9. According to SSA, microbial biomass carbon and acid phosphatase activity were the most sensitive factors affected by PMs concentrations in TWS. The results from the ANN assay revealed that the primary contributing factor of toxicity on the TWS was the exchangeable fraction of Cr. Correlation statistics underscored the significant detrimental effect of PMs' bioavailability on microbial and enzymatic parameters. Overall, the findings suggest that vermicomposting of tannery sludge waste shows potential as a viable organic amendment option in the near future.

Geochemical fractionation of iron in paper industry and municipal landfill soils: Ecological and health risks insights

Industrial processes and municipal wastes largely contribute to the fluctuations in iron (Fe) content in soils. Fe, when present in unfavorable amount, causes harmful effects on human, flora, and fauna. The present study is an attempt to evaluate the composition of Fe in surface soils from paper mill and municipal landfill sites and assess their potential ecological and human health risks. Geochemical fractionation was conducted to explore the chemical bonding of Fe across different fractions, i.e., water-soluble (F1) to residual (F6). Different contamination factors and pollution indices were evaluated to comprehend Fe contamination extent across the study area. Results indicated the preference for less mobile forms in the paper mill and landfill, with 26.66% and 43.46% of Fe associated with the Fe-Mn oxide bound fraction (F4), and 57.22% and 24.78% in the residual fraction (F6). Maximum mobility factor (MF) of 30.65% was observed in the paper mill, and 80.37% in the landfill. The enrichment factor (EF) varied within the range of 20 < EF < 40, signifying a high level of enrichment in the soil. The individual contamination factor (ICF) ranged from 0 to >6, highlighting low to high contamination. Adults were found to be more vulnerable towards Fe associated health risks compared to children. The Hazard Quotient (HQ) index showed the highest risk potential pathways as dermal contact > ingestion > inhalation. The study offers insights into potential Fe contamination risks in comparable environments, underscoring the crucial role of thorough soil assessments in shaping land use and waste management policies.

Struvite and ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid (EDDS) enhance electrokinetic-biological permeable reactive barrier removal of copper and lead from contaminated loess

Removal of heavy metals using the electrokinetic (EK) remediation technology is restricted by soils containing a fraction of clay particles above 12%. Furthermore, it is also affected by hydroxide precipitation (focusing phenomenon) close to the cathode. A modified EK reactor containing a permeable reactive barrier (PRB) was proposed herein where the enzyme-induced carbonate precipitation (EICP) treatment was incorporated into the PRB. Despite that, NH4+-N pollution induced by the urea hydrolysis resulting from the EICP treatment causes serious threats to surrounding environments and human health. There were four types of tests applied to the present work, including CP, TS1, TS2, and TS3 tests. CP test neglected the bio-PRB, while TS1 test considered the bio-PRB. TS2 test based on TS1 test tackled NH4+-N pollution using the struvite precipitation technology. TS3 test based on TS2 test applied EDDS to enhance the removal of Cu and Pb. In CP test, the removal efficiency applied to Cu and Pb removals was as low as approximately 10%, presumably due to the focusing phenomenon. The removal efficiency was elevated to approximately 24% when the bio-PRB and the electrolyte reservoir were involved in TS1 test. TS2 test indicated that the rate of struvite precipitation was 40 times faster than the ureolysis rate, meaning that the struvite precipitate had sequestered NH4+ before it started threatening surrounding environments. The chelation between Cu2+ and EDDS took place when EDDS played a part in TS3 test. It made Cu2+ negatively surface charged by transforming Cu2+ into EDDSCu2-. The chelation caused those left in S4 and S4 to migrate toward the bio-PRB, whereas it also caused those left in S1 and S2 to migrate toward the anode. Due to this reason, the fraction of Cu2+ removed by the bio-PRB and the electrolyte reservoir is raised to 32% and 26% respectively, and the fraction of remaining Cu was reduced to 41%. Also, the removal efficiency applied to Pb removal was raised to 50%. Results demonstrate the potential of struvite and EDDS-assisted EK-PRB technology as a cleanup method for Cu- and Pb-contaminated loess.

Study on uranium leaching from uranium purification residue with ammonium hydrogen fluoride

Residues generated from the uranium purification process, characterized by a high uranium content, pose a significant challenge for recovery through leaching and present a considerable environmental threat. After using XRD and SEM-mapping characterization analysis combined with the BCR continuous graded extraction test to analyze the content of different states of uranium, it was found that the main reason why the uranium in the residue was difficult to leach because it was encapsulated by SiO2 crystals. Using NH4HF2 as a leaching agent, a leaching study of uranium in the residue was carried out, and the results showed that the H+ and F- produced by NH4HF2could react with SiO2, destroying the crystal lattice of SiO2 and causing the encapsulated uranium to come into contact with the leaching agent, facilitating the leaching of uranium in the residue. The optimum conditions for uranium leaching were 10% mass fraction of NH4HF2, a liquid-solid ratio of 30:1, a reaction temperature of 30 °C and a reaction time of 120 min, and the leaching efficiency of uranium from the residue was as high as 98.95%. The leaching kinetics of uranium by NH4HF2 were consistent with the mixed controlled model in the shrinking core models, indicating that the surface chemical reaction and mass diffusion dominated both uranium leaching processes. This may provide a viable method for resource recovery and the treatment of uranium purification residues.

Cu fate driven by colloidal polystyrene microplastics with pipe scale destabilization in drinking water distribution systems

Microplastics (MPs) and Cu have been detected in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs). Investigating MP effects on Cu adsorption by pipe scales and concomitant variations of pipe scales was critical for improving the water quality, which remained unclear to date. Therefore, polystyrene microplastics (PSMPs) were adopted for the model MPs to determine their effects on Cu fate and pipe scale stabilization, containing batch adsorption, metal speciation extraction, and Cu release experiments. Findings demonstrated that complexation and electrostatic interactions were involved in Cu adsorption on pipe scales. PSMPs contributed to Cu adsorption via increasing negative charges of pipe scales and providing additional adsorption sites for Cu, which included the carrying and component effects of free and adsorbed PSMPs, respectively. The decreased iron and manganese oxides fraction (45.57 % to 29.91 %) and increased organic fraction (48.51 % to 63.58 %) of Cu in pipe scales when PSMPs were coexisting illustrated that PSMPs had a greater affinity for Cu than pipe scales and thus influenced its mobility. Additionally, the release of Cu could be facilitated by the coexisted PSMPs, with the destabilization of pipe scales. This study was the first to exhibit that Cu fate and pipe scale stabilization were impacted by MPs, providing new insight into MP hazards in DWDSs.

Mechanism of clay mineral modified biochar simultaneously immobilizes heavy metals and reduces soil carbon emissions

Heavy metal pollution in farmland soil has become increasingly severe, and multi-element composite pollution has brought enormous harm to human production and life. Environmental changes in cold regions (such as freeze-thaw cycles and dry-wet alternations) may increase the potential physiological toxicity of heavy metals and exacerbate pollution risks. In order to reveal the effectiveness of sepiolite modified biochar in the remediation of the soil contaminated with lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr), the rice husk biochar pyrolyzed at 500 and 800 °C were selected for remediation treatment (denoted as BC500 and BC800). Meanwhile, different proportions of sepiolite were used for modification (biochar: sepiolite = 1: 0.5 and 1: 1), denoted as MBC500/MBC800 and HBC500/HBC800, respectively. The results showed that modified biochar with sepiolite can effectively improve the immobilization of heavy metals. Under natural conservation condition, the amount of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) extractable Pb in BC500, MBC500, and HBC500 decreased by 5.95, 12.39, and 13.55%, respectively, compared to CK. Freeze-thaw cycles and dry-wet alternations activated soil heavy metals, while modified biochar increased adsorption sites and oxygen-containing functional groups under aging conditions, inhibiting the fractions transformation of heavy metals. Furthermore, freeze-thaw cycles promoted the decomposition and mineralization of soil organic carbon (SOC), while sepiolite hindered the release of active carbon through ion exchange and adsorption complexation. Among them, and the soil dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content in HBC800 decreased by 49.39% compared to BC800. Additionally, the high-temperature pyrolyzed biochar (BC800) enhanced the porosity richness and alkalinity of material, which effectively inhibited the migration and transformation of heavy metals compared to BC500, and reduced the decomposition of soil DOC.

Two-step extraction for the evaluation of metal-organic framework impregnated materials

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are widely used for gas adsorption, separation, and sensing materials. In most cases, MOFs are not used in their crystal form but as impregnated materials because the fine crystals result in high-pressure drops. One key characteristic of MOF-impregnated materials is the amount of MOF in the material. This is evaluated using the wet digestion method; however, it is limited to determining only the metal content. Moreover, some metal, denoted as free metal, will not react with ligands to form MOFs. Additionally, it is crucial to determine the ligand amount, which cannot be determined using wet digestion. In the present study, a two-step extraction method for copper (II) benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (Cu-BTC MOF) impregnated materials was developed to determine the MOF formed and free metals and ligands. Various solvents were applied to evaluate the extraction efficiencies. The results led to the selection of ethanol (EtOH) for extracting free Cu2+ and BTC, while 0.3 M HNO3 was chosen to extract MOF-formed Cu2+ and BTC. The MOF-impregnated sample material was first extracted using EtOH and then 0.3 M HNO3. The Cu2+ and BTC in the obtained extract solutions, as well as EtOH and HNO3, were analyzed using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy and high-performance liquid chromatography, respectively. In standard addition tests, free and MOF-formed Cu2+ and BTC were quantitatively extracted from MOF-impregnated materials. The developed two-step analysis method was successfully applied to Cu-BTC-impregnated materials used in gas sensing.

Biogeochemical mechanisms of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) in groundwater and soil profiles in the Zhongning section of the Weining Plain (northwest China)

High levels of Iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) in soils may contribute to secondary contamination of groundwater. However, there is limited understanding of the cycling mechanisms of Fe and Mn in groundwater and soil. This study aimed to investigate the biogeochemical processes constituting the Fe and Mn cycle by combining hydrochemistry, sequential extraction and microbiological techniques. The results indicated a similar vertical distribution pattern of Fe and Mn, with lower levels of the effective form (EFC-Fe/Mn) observed at the oxygenated surface, increasing near the groundwater table and decreasing below it. Generally, there was a tendency for accumulation above the water table, with Mn exhibiting a higher release potential compared to Fe. Iron‑manganese oxides (Ox-Fe/Mn) dominated the effective forms, with Fe and Mn in the soil entering groundwater through the reduction dissolution of Ox-Fe/Mn and the oxidative degradation of organic matter or sulfide (OM-Fe/Mn). Correlation analysis revealed that Fe and Mn tend to accumulate in media with fine particles and high organic carbon (TOC) contents. 16S rRNA sequencing analysis disclosed significant variation in the abundance of microorganisms associated with Fe and Mn transformations among unsaturated zone soils, saturated zone media and groundwater, with Fe/Mn content exerting an influence on microbial communities. Furthermore, functional bacterial identification results from the FAPROTAX database show a higher abundance of iron-oxidizing bacteria (9.3 %) in groundwater, while iron and manganese-reducing bacteria are scarce in both groundwater and soil environments. Finally, a conceptual model of Fe and Mn cycling was constructed, elucidating the biogeochemical processes in groundwater and soil environments. This study provides a new perspective for a deeper understanding of the environmental fate of Fe and Mn, which is crucial for mitigating Fe and Mn pollution in groundwater.

Roles of the SOM and clay minerals in alleviating the leaching of Pb, Zn, and Cd from the Pb/Zn smelter soil: Multi-surface model and DFT study

Soil organic matter (SOM) and clay minerals are important sinks for reactive heavy metals (HMs) and exogenous hydrogen ions (H+). Therefore, HMs are likely to be released into soil porewater under acid rainfall conditions due to the competitive adsorption of H+. However, negligible Lead, Zinc, and Cadmium (<6 ‰) in the Pb/Zn smelter soil were leached, and the effects of SOM and clay minerals on HMs leaching were unclear. Herein, the H+ consumption and HMs redistribution on SOM and clay minerals were quantitated by the multi-surface model and density functional theory calculations to reveal the roles of SOM and clay minerals in alleviating HMs' leaching. Clay minerals consumed 43.2 %-52.0 % of the exogenous H+, serving as the dominant sink for the exogenous H+ due to its high content and hindering H+ competitive adsorption on SOM. Protonation of the functional groups constituted >90 % of the total H+ captured by clay minerals. Meanwhile, some H+ also competed with HMs for adsorption sites on clay minerals due to its 0.497-fold to 1.54-fold higher binding energies than HMs, resulting in the release of HMs. On the contrary, SOM served as an accommodator for taking over the released HMs from clay minerals. The HMs complexation on the low-affinity sites (R-L-) of SOM was responsible for the recapture of HMs. In Ca-enriched soil, the released HMs were also recaptured by SOM via ion exchange on the R-L-Ca+ and the high-affinity sites (R-H-Ca+) sites due to the 30.8 %-178 % higher binding energies of HMs on these sites than those of Ca. As a result, >63.4 % of the released HMs from clay minerals were transferred to the SOM. Thus, the synergy of SOM and clay minerals in alleviating the leaching of HMs in Pb/Zn smelter soils cannot be ignored in risk assessment and soil remediation.

Rhodopseudomonas palustris shapes bacterial community, reduces Cd bioavailability in Cd contaminated flooding paddy soil, and improves rice performance

Photosynthetic bacteria (PSB) are suitable to live and remediate cadmium (Cd) in the slightly oxygenated or anaerobic flooding paddy field. However, there is currently limited study on the inhibition of Cd accumulation in rice by PSB, and the relevant mechanisms has yet to be elucidated. In the current study, we firstly used Rhodopseudomonas palustris SC06 (a typical PSB) as research target and combined physiology, biochemistry, microbiome and metabolome to evaluate the mechanisms of remeding Cd pollution in paddy field and inhibiting Cd accumulation in rice. Microbiome analysis results revealed that intensive inoculation with R. palustris SC06 successfully survived and multiplied in flooding paddy soil, and significantly increased the relatively abundance of anaerobic bacteria including Desulfobacterota, Anaerolineaceae, Geobacteraceae, and Gemmatimonadaceae by 46.40 %, 45.00 %, 50.12 %, and 21.30 %, respectively. Simultaneously, the structure of microbial community was regulated to maintain relative stability in the rhizosphere soil of rice under Cd stress. In turn, these bacteria communities reduced bioavailable Cd and enhanced residual Cd in soil, and induced the upregulation of sugar and organic acids in the rice roots, which further inhibited Cd uptake in rice seedlings, and dramatically improved the photosynthetic efficiency in the leaves and the activities of antioxidative enzymes in the roots. Finally, Cd content of the roots, stems, leaves, and grains significantly decreased by 38.14 %, 69.10 %, 83.40 %, and 37.24 % comparing with the control, respectively. This study provides a new strategy for the remediation of Cd-contaminated flooding paddy fields and the safe production of rice.

Reducing the accumulation of cadmium and phenanthrene in rice by optimizing planting spacing: Role of low-abundance but core rhizobacterial communities

Optimizing planting spacing is a common agricultural practice for enhancing rice growth. However, its effect on the accumulation of cadmium (Cd) and phenanthrene (Phen) in soil-rice systems and the response mechanisms of rhizobacteria to co-contaminants remain unclear. This study found that reducing rice planting spacing to 5 cm and 10 cm significantly decreased the bioavailability of Cd (by 7.9 %-29.5 %) and Phen (by 12.9 %-47.6 %) in the rhizosphere soil by converting them into insoluble forms. The increased accumulation of Cd and Phen in roots and iron plaques (IPs) ultimately led to decreased Cd (by 32.2 %-39.9 %) and Phen (by 4.2 %-17.3 %) levels in brown rice, and also significantly affected the composition of rhizobacteria. Specifically, reducing rice planting spacing increased the abundance of low-abundance but core rhizobacteria in the rhizosphere soil and IPs, including Bacillus, Clostridium, Sphingomonas, Paenibacillus, and Leifsonia. These low-abundance but core rhizobacteria exhibited enhanced metabolic capacities for Cd and Phen, accompanied by increased abundances of Cd-resistance genes (e.g., czcC and czcB) and Phen-degradation genes (e.g., pahE4 and pahE1) within the rhizosphere soil and IPs. Reduced planting spacing had no noticeable impact on rice biomass. These findings provide new insights into the role of low-abundance but core rhizobacterial communities in Cd and Phen uptake by rice, highlighting the potential of reduced planting spacing as an eco-friendly strategy for ensuring the safety of rice production on contaminated paddy soils.

Carcinogenic metal(loid)s in house dust compared to soil: Concentrations and gastric bioaccessibility

As a sink and a source of chemicals, house dust represents a relevant medium to assess indoor exposure to metal(loid)s via incidental ingestion or inhalation. However, nationally representative indoor data are scarce. Results from the Canadian House Dust Study (CHDS, 2007-2010; n = 1025) provide nationally representative mean, median and 95th percentile concentrations for 38 elements in typical urban house dust, along with their gastric bioaccessibility. Total concentrations (median/95th percentile) of carcinogenic metal(loid)s in Canadian house dust (μg g-1) are as follows: As (9.0/40), Be (0.4/0.9), Cd (3.5/17), Co (5.6/19), Cr (99/214), Ni (62/322) and Pb (100/760). Total As and Pb concentrations in house dust exceed residential soil guidelines for the protection of human health in about one-third of Canadian homes. Percent bioaccessibilities (median) are: Cd (65%) > Pb (63%) > Be ∼ Ni (36%) > Co (35%) > As (20%) > Cr (15%). Lead, Cd and Co concentrations are significantly greater in older houses (< 1976). Data from two pilot studies (n = 66 + 51) further demonstrate the distinct geochemistry of house dust compared to soils, notably enrichment of carcinogenic metal(loid)s and their increased bioaccessibility. These results provide essential baseline values to refine risk assessment and inform on health risk at contaminated sites.

Predicting cadmium fractions in agricultural soils using proximal sensing techniques

Cadmium (Cd) accumulation in agricultural systems has caused global environmental and health concerns. Application of phosphate fertiliser to sustain plant production unintentionally accumulated Cd in agricultural soils over time. Rapid and cost-effective Cd monitoring in these soils will help to inform Cd management practices. Compared to total Cd analysis, examining chemical fractions by sequential extraction methods can provide information on the origin, availability, and mobility of soil Cd, and to assess the potential plant Cd uptake. A total of 87 air-dried topsoil (0-15 cm) samples from pastoral farms with a history of long-term application of phosphate fertiliser were analysed using wet chemistry methods for total Cd and Cd forms in exchangeable, acid soluble, metal oxides bound, organic matter bound, and residual fractions. The data acquired using three proximal sensing techniques, visible-near-infrared (vis-NIR), mid-infrared (MIR), and portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectroscopy were used as input for partial least squares regression to develop models predicting total Cd and Cd fractions. The average total Cd concentration was 0.58 mg Cd/kg soil. For total Cd, cross-validation (cv) results of models using individual vis-NIR, MIR, and pXRF data performed with normalised root mean squared error (nRMSEcv) of 26%, 30%, and 31% and concordance correlation coefficient (CCCcv) of 0.85, 0.77, and 0.75, respectively. For exchangeable Cd, model using MIR data performed with nRMSEcv of 40% and CCCcv of 0.57. For acid soluble and organic matter bound Cd, models using vis-NIR data performed with nRMSEcv of 11% and 33% and CCCcv of 0.97 and 0.84, respectively. Reflectance spectroscopy techniques could potentially be applied as complementary tools to estimate total Cd and plant available and potentially available Cd fractions for effective implementation of Cd monitoring programmes.

How do soil processes control the provision of ecosystem services in coastal wetlands?

Coastal wetlands are known for their diverse ecosystems, yet their soil characteristics are often misunderstood and thought to be monotonous. These soils are frequently subjected to saline water saturation, leading to unique soil processes. However, the combination and intensity of these processes can vary considerably across different ecosystems. In this study, we hypothesize that these diverse soil processes not only govern the geochemical conditions in coastal ecosystems but also influence their ability to deliver ecosystem services. To test this hypothesis, we conducted soil analyses in mangroves, seagrass meadows, and hypersaline tidal flats along the Brazilian coast. We used key soil properties as indicators of soil processes and developed a conceptual model linking soil processes and soil-related ecosystem services in these environments. Under more anoxic conditions, the intense soil organic matter accumulation and sulfidization processes in mangroves evidence their significance in terms of climate regulation through organic carbon sequestration and contaminants immobilization. Similarly, pronounced sulfidization in seagrasses underscores their ability to immobilize contaminants. In contrast, hypersaline tidal flats soils exhibit increased intensities of salinization and calcification processes, leading to a high capacity for accumulating inorganic carbon as secondary carbonates (CaCO3), underscoring their role in climate regulation through inorganic carbon sequestration. Our findings show that contrary to previously thought coastal wetlands are far from monotonous, exhibiting significant variations in the types and intensities of soil processes, which in turn influence their capacity to deliver ecosystem services. This understanding is pivotal for guiding effective management strategies to enhance ecosystem services in coastal wetlands.

Unraveling the intrinsic mechanism behind the retention of arsenic in the co-gasification of coal and sewage sludge: Focus on the role of Ca and Fe compounds

Minimizing the emission of arsenic (As) is one of the urgent problems during co-gasification of Shenmu coal (SM) and sewage sludge (SS). The intrinsic mechanism of As retention was obtained by analyzing the effect of different SM addition ratios on the As form transformation during co-gasification at 1000 °C under CO2 atmosphere. The results showed that the addition of SM effectively promoted the enrichment of As in the co-gasified residues. Especially, the best As retention rate of 65.71% was achieved with the 70 wt% addition ratio of SM. The addition of SM promoted the adsorption and chemical oxidation of As(III) to the less toxic As(V) through the coupling of Ca and Fe compounds in the co-gasified residues. XRD and XPS results indicated that Fe2O3 adsorbed As2O3(g) after partial conversion to Fe3O4 by the Boudouard reaction, while part of As2O3 was oxidized to As2O5 by lattice oxygen. Finally, the generated As2O5 was successively trapped by CaO and Fe2O3 to form stable Ca3(AsO4)2 and FeAsO4. HRTEM and TEM analysis comprehensively proved that As(III) was stabilized by the lattice cage of CaAl2Si2O8. In conclusion, the co-oxidation of Ca and Fe compounds and lattice stabilization simultaneously played a crucial role in the retention of As2O3(g) during co-gasification.

Fine particle contents in sediment drive silica transport and deposition to the estuary in the turbid river basin

Changes in riverine sediment transport are an important part of land-sea geochemical cycling and further impact geochemical element fluxes in turbid rivers. However, as a vital nutrient element supporting primary productivity, silica mobilization from drainage in turbid rivers is overlooked. The turbid Yellow River has a strong ability to adsorb reactive silica, thereby exerting a substantial impact on the estuarine deposition of silica. Through an integration of monitoring databases, field sampling and historical hydrological data, we concluded that riverine fine particles control the exchangeable silica in the river and its estuary under soil erosion. Indoor simulation further revealed that the adsorbed content of exchangeable silica (ex-Si) in fine sediment constituted 35 % of total sediment matter. In addition, the transport of phosphorus and ex-Si was jointly regulated by fine sediment in global fluvial sediment transport, thereby exerting additional influence on the trophic structure of estuarine ecosystems. Against the backdrop of sediment budget deficit in the estuary, the heightened content of fine particles is depleting the silica storage from estuarine sediments.

Insight into heavy metal chemical fractions in ash collected from municipal and industrial waste incinerators in northern Vietnam

This investigation involved the collection of fly ash and bottom ash specimens from seven waste incinerators situated in the northern provinces of Vietnam, aimed at assessing the composition and distribution patterns of five chemical fractions of heavy metals (Pb, Cr, As, Cd Cu, and Zn) present in incinerator waste ash. The outcomes reveal that fly ash exhibited a relatively elevated concentration of industrial waste metals (25-66%) such as As, Cd, and Pb primarily in exchangeable (F1) and carbonate fractions (F2), which are mobile forms susceptible to environmental dissolution and consequential bioaccumulation posing health risks to humans. The predominant states of the metals Cr, Cu, and Zn were identified as residual, Fe-Mn oxide, and carbonate, respectively, with their relative proportions showing minimal variation. Conversely, heavy metals were predominantly present in residual residue and Fe-Mn bound form (F3) in bottom ash derived from both residential and commercial waste incineration operations. The non-carcinogenic hazard indices (HI) associated with the examined metals, ranked for both adults and children, were as follows: Pb > Cr > As > Cd > Cu > Zn. Notably, the HI values for Pb, Cr, and As exceeded the permissible threshold (HI > 1) for children. However, the risk of As, Cd, and Pb-related cancer via exposure pathways remained within acceptable limits for both age groups. Conversely, the probability of carcinogenic effects attributable to Cr surpassed the permissible threshold (>10-4), indicating significant health concerns associated with heavy metals in waste incinerators for humans, particularly children.

Microbiologically induced calcite precipitation (MICP) in situ remediated heavy metal contamination in sludge nutrient soil

Microbiologically induced calcite precipitation (MICP), as a newly developing bioremediation technology, could redeem heavy metal contamination in diverse scenarios. In this study, MICP bacterium Sporosarcina ureilytica ML-2 was employed to suppress the pollution of Pb, Cd and Zn in municipal sludge nutrient soil. After MICP remediation, the exchangeable Cd and Zn in sludge nutrient soil were correspondingly reduced by 31.02 % and 6.09 %, while the carbonate-bound Pb, Cd and Zn as well as the residual fractions were increased by 16.12 %, 6.63 %, 13.09 % and 6.10 %, 45.70 %, 3.86 %, respectively. In addition, the extractable Pb, Cd and Zn either by diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) or toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) in sludge nutrient soil were significantly reduced. These results demonstrated that the bio-calcite generated via MICP helped to immobilize heavy metals. Furthermore, MICP treatment improved the abundance of functional microorganisms related to urea cycle, while reduced the overall abundance of metal resistance genes (MRGs) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This work confirmed the feasibility of MICP in remediation of heavy metal in sludge nutrient soil, which expanded the application field of MICP and provided a promising way for heavy metal pollution management.

Size-resolved distribution of trace elements in lysimeter soil solutions under contrasting long-term agricultural management to assess their bioavailability

The chemical species of trace elements (TEs) in agricultural soils is highly variable under diverse conditions, requiring tools with clear resolution and minimal disturbance for exploration. A novel surgical (316L) stainless steel (SS) lysimeter with a 5 μm pore size was developed to collect field soil solutions. The size-resolved distribution of TEs were characterized into total (nitric acid digestion), particulate (0.45-5 μm), dissolved (<0.45 μm), colloidal (1 kDa to 0.45 μm), and mainly ionic (<1 kDa) fractions in the lysimeter soil solutions. Total concentrations of TEs (dry weight basis) in acid digested Gray Luvisolic soils were analyzed. Most TEs in lysimeter soil solutions were present in particulate phases, relevant to their geochemical affinities and occurrences in soil minerals. Among dissolved fractions, As, Ba, Co, Li, Mn, Tl, and V existed as mainly ionic species in the soil solutions. Copper, Pb, Al, Th, and U showed variable associations with dissolved organic matter (DOM) and/or inorganic colloids among agricultural treatments. Inorganic NPKS or NKS fertilizer applications with lower pH (5.25-5.74) enhanced mobility and potential bioavailability of Ba, Co, Li, Mn, and Pb present in mainly ionic species, compared with other locations (pH 5.82-6.37). Manure application exhibited a dual effect, potentially increasing bioavailability for As, Tl, and V due to probably enhanced cation exchange capacity (CEC), while also facilitating specific adsorption of Cu and U on DOM, potentially reducing their bioavailability depending on DOM molecular weight. Colloidal and ionic Al and Th concentrations were higher in forest soils than agricultural soils, with extremely low potential bioavailability of Th attributed to strong precipitation with inorganic colloids and adsorption on DOM. The lysimeter sampling and size fractionation method provided a clear insight into agricultural effects on TE distributions and enhancing understanding of agricultural soil health in terms of TE bioavailability in situ.

Soil amendments alter cadmium distribution and bacterial community structure in paddy soils

Soil amendments play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of food production by inhibiting the transfer of heavy metal ions from soils to crops. Nevertheless, their impact on soil characteristics and the microbial community and their role in reducing cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice remain unclear. In this study, pot experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of three soil amendments (mineral, organic, and microbial) on the distribution of Cd speciation, organic components, iron oxides, and microbial community structure. The application of soil amendments resulted in significant reductions in the soil available Cd content (16 %-51 %) and brown rice Cd content (16 %-78 %), facilitating the transformation of Cd from unstable forms (decreasing 10 %-20 %) to stable forms (increasing 77 %-150 %) in the soil. The mineral and organic amendments increased the soil cation exchange capacity (CEC) and plant-derived organic carbon (OC), respectively, leading to reduced Cd accumulation in brown rice, while the microbial amendment enhanced OC complexity and the abundances of Firmicutes and Bacteroidota, contributing to the decreased rice Cd uptake. The synchrotron radiation-based Fourier transform infrared (SR-FTIR) spectroscopy indicated that soil amendments regulated soil Cd species by promoting iron oxides and OC coupling. Moreover, both organic and microbial amendments significantly reduced the diversity and richness of the bacterial communities and altered their compositions and structures, by increasing the relative abundances of Bacteroidota and Firmicutes and decreasing those of Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Myxococcota. Soil microbiome analysis revealed that the increase of Firmicutes and Bacteroidota associated with Cd adsorption and sequestration contributed to the suppression of soil Cd reactivity. These findings offer valuable insights into the potential mechanisms by which soil amendments regulate the speciation and bioavailability of Cd, and improve the bacterial communities, thereby providing guidance for agricultural management practices.

Penicillium oxalicum SL2-enhanced nanoscale zero-valent iron effectively reduces Cr(VI) and shifts soil microbiota

Most current researches focus solely on reducing soil chromium availability. It is difficult to reduce soil Cr(VI) concentration below 5.0 mg kg-1 using single remediation technology. This study introduced a sustainable soil Cr(VI) reduction and stabilization system, Penicillium oxalicum SL2-nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI), and investigated its effect on Cr(VI) reduction efficiency and microbial ecology. Results showed that P. oxalicum SL2-nZVI effectively reduced soil total Cr(VI) concentration from 187.1 to 3.4 mg kg-1 within 180 d, and remained relatively stable at 360 d. The growth curve of P. oxalicum SL2 and microbial community results indicated that γ-ray irradiation shortened the adaptation time of P. oxalicum SL2 and facilitated its colonization in soil. P. oxalicum SL2 colonization activated nZVI and its derivatives, and increased soil iron bioavailability. After restoration, the negative effect of Cr(VI) on soil microorganisms was markedly alleviated. Cr(VI), Fe(II), bioavailable Cr/Fe, Eh, EC and urease (SUE) were the key environmental factors of soil microbiota. Notably, Penicillium significantly stimulated the growth of urease-positive bacteria, Arthrobacter, Pseudarthrobacter, and Microvirga, synergistically reducing soil chromium availability. The combination of P. oxalicum SL2 and nZVI is expected to form a green, economical and long-lasting Cr(VI) reduction stabilization strategy.

Exposure risks of lead and other metals to humans: A consideration of specific size fraction and methodology

Particle size is a critical influencing factor in assessing human exposure risk as fine particles are generally more hazardous than larger coarse particles. However, how particle composition influences human health risk is only poorly understood as different studies have different utilised different definitions and as a consequence there is no consensus. Here, with a new methodology taking insights of each size fraction load (%GSFload), metal bioaccessibility, we classify which specific particle size can reliably estimate the human exposure risk of lead and other metals. We then validate these by correlating the metals in each size fraction with those in human blood, hair, crop grain and different anthropogenic sources. Although increasing health risks are linked to metal concentration these increase as particle size decrease, the adjusted-risk for each size fraction differs when %GSFload is introduced to the risk assessment program. When using a single size fraction (250-50 µm, 50-5 µm, 5-1 µm, and < 1 µm) for comparison, the risk may be either over- or under-estimated. However, by considering bulk and adjusting the risk, it would be possible to obtain results that are closer to the real scenarios, which have been validated through human responses and evidence from crops. Fine particle size fractions (< 5 µm) bearing the mineral crystalline or aggregates (CaCO3, Fe3O4, Fe2O3, CaHPO4, Pb5(PO4)3Cl) alter the accumulation, chemical speciation, and fate of metals in soil/dust/sediment from the different sources. Loaded lead in the size fraction of < 50 µm has a significantly higher positive association with the risk-receptor biomarkers (BLLs, Hair Pb, Corn Pb, and Crop Pb) than other size fractions (bulk and 50-250 µm). Thus, we conclude that the < 50 µm fraction would be likely to be recommended as a reliable fraction to include in a risk assessment program. This methodology acts as a valuable instrument for future research undertakings, highlighting the importance of choosing suitable size fractions and attaining improved accuracy in risk assessment results that can be effectively compared.

High performance self-assembled sulfidized nanoscale zero-valent iron for the immobilization of cadmium in contaminated sediments: Optimization, microbial response, and mechanisms

Sulfidized nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nZVI) showed excellent removal capacity for cadmium (Cd) in aqueous phase. However, the remediation effects of S-nZVI on Cd-contaminated sediment and its interactions with microorganisms in relation to Cd fate remain unclear. The complexity of the external environment posed a challenge for Cd remediation. This study synthesized S-nZVI with different S and Fe precursors to investigate the effect of precursors and applied the optimal material to immobilize Cd in sediments. Characterization analysis revealed that the precursor affected the morphology, Fe0 crystallinity, and the degree of oxidation of the material. Incubation experiments demonstrated that the immobilization efficiency of Cd using S-nZVIFe3++S2- (S/Fe = 0.14) reached the peak value of 99.54%. 1% and 5% dosages of S-nZVI significantly reduced Cd concentration in the overlying water, DTPA-extractable Cd content, and exchangeable (EX) Cd speciation (P < 0.05). Cd leaching in sediment and total iron in the overlying water remained at low levels during 90 d of incubation. Notably, each treatment maintained a high Cd immobilization efficiency under different pH, water/sediment ratio, organic acid, and coexisting ion conditions. Sediment physicochemical properties, functional bacteria, and a range of adsorption, complexation and precipitation of CdS effects dominated Cd immobilization.

Impact of coconut-fiber biochar on lead translocation, accumulation, and detoxification mechanisms in a soil-rice system under elevated lead stress

Biochar, an environmentally friendly material, was found to passivate lead (Pb) in contaminated soil effectively. This study utilized spectroscopic investigations and partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) analysis to examine the impact of coconut-fiber biochar (CFB) on the translocation, accumulation, and detoxification mechanisms of Pb in soil-rice systems. The results demonstrated a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in bioavailable Pb concentration in paddy soils with CFB amendment, as well as reduced Pb concentrations in rice roots, shoots, and brown rice. Synchrotron-based micro X-ray fluorescence analyses revealed that CFB application inhibited the migration of Pb to the rhizospheric soil region, leading to reduced Pb uptake by rice roots. Additionally, the CFB treatment decreased Pb concentrations in the cellular protoplasm of both roots and shoots, and enhanced the activity of antioxidant enzymes in rice plants, improving their Pb stress tolerance. PLS-PM analyses quantified the effects of CFB on the accumulation and detoxification pathways of Pb in the soil-rice system. Understanding how biochar influences the immobilization and detoxification of Pb in soil-rice systems could provide valuable insights for strategically using biochar to address hazardous elements in complex agricultural settings.

Mechanisms of copper and zinc bioremoval by microalgae and bacteria grown in nutrient rich wastewaters

Swine farming produces large quantities of nutrient-rich wastewater, which often contains metals such as Cu and Zn, used as feed additives for pigs. These metals must be removed from the wastewater before discharge but their retention in the biomass can limit its subsequent utilization. Photobioreactors are a very promising alternative for swine wastewater treatment, as the consortium of microalgae and bacteria growing symbiotically in these reactors allows high nutrient and metal removal efficiency at moderate costs. This work studies the mechanisms of removal of Cu(II) and Zn(II) by the two types of microorganisms growing in these photobioreactors. A microalga commonly used in wastewater treatment (Scenedesmus almeriensis) and an activated sludge were kept in contact with synthetic wastewater containing 100 mg/L of Cu and Zn. After 72 h, Scenedesmus almeriensis removed 43% of Cu and 45% of Zn, while activated sludge removed 78% of Cu and 96% of Zn. Single and sequential extractions of the biomasses using different extracting reagents revealed that biosorption on protonable groups is the dominant removal mechanisms. Mild reagents solubilized 69% of Cu and 94% of Zn from the microalgae and 76% of Cu and 93% of Zn from the activated sludge. Low metal concentrations in the oxidizable and residual fractions evidenced minimal bioaccumulation inside the cells. FTIR and ESEM-EDX analysis confirmed biosorption by ion exchange and complexation as the main metal remediation mechanisms. The weak bonds of the biosorbed Cu and Zn ions are beneficial for the valorization of biomass and the obtaining of safe bioproducts.

Revealing soil microbial ecophysiological indicators in acidic environments laden with heavy metals via predictive modeling: Understanding the impacts of black diamond excavation

Appraising the activity of soil microbial community in relation to soil acidity and heavy metal (HM) content can help evaluate it's quality and health. Coal mining has been reported to mobilize locked HM in soil and induce acid mine drainage. In this study, agricultural soils around coal mining areas were studied and compared to baseline soils in order to comprehend the former's effect in downgrading soil quality. Acidity as well as HM fractions were significantly higher in the two contaminated zones as compared to baseline soils (p < 0.01). Moreover, self-organizing and geostatistical maps show a similar pattern of localization in metal availability and soil acidity thereby indicating a causal relationship. Sobol sensitivity, cluster, and principal component analyses were employed to enunciate the relationship between the various metal and acidity fractions with that of soil microbial properties. The results indicate a significant negative impact of metal bioavailability, and acidity on soil microbial activity. Lastly, Taylor diagrams were employed to predict soil microbial quality and health based on soil physicochemical inputs. The efficiency of several machine learning algorithms was tested to identify Random Forrest as the best model for prediction. Thus, the study imparts knowledge about soil pollution parameters, and acidity status thereby projecting soil quality which can be a pioneer in sustainable agricultural practices.

Inhibitory effects of Pseudomonas sp. W112 on cadmium accumulation in wheat grains: Reduced the bioavailability in soil and enhanced the interception by plant organs

Microorganisms play an important role in heavy metal bioremediation and soil fertility. The effects of soil inoculation with Pseudomonas sp. W112 on Cd accumulation in wheat were investigated by analyzing the transport, subcellular distribution and speciation of Cd in the soil and plants. Pseudomonas sp. W112 application significantly decreased Cd content in the roots, internode and grains by 10.2%, 29.5% and 33.0%, respectively, and decreased Cd transfer from the basal nodes to internodes by 63.5%. Treatment with strain W112 decreased the inorganic and water-soluble Cd content in the roots and increased the proportion of residual Cd in both the roots and basal nodes. At the subcellular level, the Cd content in the root cell wall and basal node cytosol increased by 19.6% and 61.8%, respectively, indicating that strain W112 improved the ability of the root cell wall and basal node cytosol to fix Cd. In the rhizosphere soil, strain W112 effectively colonized and significantly decreased the exchangeable Cd, carbonate-bound Cd and iron-manganese oxide-bound Cd content by 43.5%, 27.3% and 17.6%, respectively, while it increased the proportion of residual Cd by up to 65.2%. Moreover, a 3.1% and 23.5% increase in the pH and inorganic nitrogen content in the rhizosphere soil, respectively, was recorded. Similarly, soil bacterial community sequencing revealed that inoculating with strain W112 increased the abundance of Pseudomonas, Thauera and Azoarcus, which are associated with inorganic nitrogen metabolism, and decreased that of Acidobacteria, which is indicative of soil alkalinization. Hence, root application of Pseudomonas sp. W112 improved soil nitrogen availability and inhibited Cd accumulation in the wheat grains in a two-stage process: by reducing the Cd availability in the rhizosphere soil and by improving Cd interception and fixation in the wheat roots and basal nodes. Pseudomonas sp. W112 may be a suitable bioremediation agent for restoring Cd-contaminated wheat fields.

Potential risk assessment and occurrence characteristic of heavy metals based on artificial neural network model along the Yangtze River Estuary, China

Pollution from heavy metals in estuaries poses potential risks to the aquatic environment and public health. The complexity of the estuarine water environment limits the accurate understanding of its pollution prediction. Field observations were conducted at seven sampling sites along the Yangtze River Estuary (YRE) during summer, autumn, and winter 2021 to analyze the concentrations of seven heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Pb, Cu, Ni, Zn) in water and surface sediments. The order of heavy metal concentrations in water samples from highest to lowest was Zn > As > Cu > Ni > Cr > Pb > Cd, while that in surface sediments samples was Zn > Cr > As > Ni > Pb > Cu > Cd. Human health risk assessment of the heavy metals in water samples indicated a chronic and carcinogenic risk associated with As. The risks of heavy metals in surface sediments were evaluated using the geo-accumulation index (Igeo) and potential ecological risk index (RI). Among the seven heavy metals, As and Cd were highly polluted, with Cd being the main contributor to potential ecological risks. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to identify the sources of the different heavy metals, revealing that As originated primarily from anthropogenic emissions, while Cd was primarily from atmospheric deposition. To further analyze the influence of water quality indicators on heavy metal pollution, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was utilized. A modified model was proposed, incorporating biochemical parameters to predict the level of heavy metal pollution, achieving an accuracy of 95.1%. This accuracy was 22.5% higher than that of the traditional model and particularly effective in predicting the maximum 20% of values. Results in this paper highlight the pollution of As and Cd along the YRE, and the proposed model provides valuable information for estimating heavy metal pollution in estuarine water environments, facilitating pollution prevention efforts.

Effect of boron fertilization on productivity and sustainability of rice-wheat cropping system in Tarai region, North-West India

Extensive global dependency on rice and wheat crops has necessitated the adoption of intensive cultivation practices, thereby compelling to closely monitor the potential yield-limiting factors, among which, boron (B) deficiency stands out to be a prime concern. The present study explores the effects of B fertilization strategies within the Rice-Wheat Cropping System (RWCS) in the Tarai region of North-West India. A comprehensive six-year field experiment was conducted (2013-2019) at G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Uttarakhand, India. The experiment tested graded B doses (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 kg ha-1) at varied frequencies (single, alternate, and annual) in a factorial design. The study revealed significant impacts of alternate B application at 1.5 kg ha-1 on crop yields and the Sustainable Yield Index (SYI). The System Rice Equivalent Yield (SREY) exhibited an increase of 6.7% with B supplementation over B-deprived plots, highlighting the pivotal role of B fertilizer in enhancing productivity within the RWCS. The economic optimum B dose was found to be 1.422 kg ha-1 using a linear plus plateau model, resulting in a calculated annual SREY of 9.73 t ha-1 when applied alternately to the cropping system. Continuous application and higher B rates demonstrated substantial increases in various B fractions, while the mobility factor remained within 10%, depicting safe ecological limits. The distribution of fractions in B-treated plots on average followed the order: residual B > organically-bound B > oxide bound B > specifically adsorbed B > readily soluble B. Similarities in the distribution patterns of B fractions between B-treated plots and the control indicated potential influence of biotic or abiotic processes on B fraction dynamics, even in the absence of external B application. To sum up, B application in alternate years at 1.5 kg ha-1 was most sustainable in enhancing the SREY, SYI, available soil B, and B fractions and lowering the environmental hazards.

Intelligent monitoring of the available lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in soil samples based on half adder and half subtractor molecular logic gates

The available heavy metals in soil samples can cause the direct toxicity on ecosystems, plants, and human health. Traditional chemical extraction and recombinant bacterial methods for the available heavy metals assay often suffer from inaccuracy and poor specificity. In this work, we construct half adder and half subtractor molecular logic gates with molecular-level biocomputation capabilities for the intelligent sensing of the available lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd). The available Pb and Cd can cleave DNAzyme sequences to release the trigger DNA, which can activate the hairpin probe assembly in the logic system. This multifunctional logic system can not only achieve the intelligent recognition of the available Pb and Cd according to the truth tables, but also can realize the simultaneous quantification with high sensitivity, with the detection limits of 2.8 pM and 25.6 pM, respectively. The logic biosensor is robust and has been applied to determination of the available Pb and Cd in soil samples with good accuracy and reliability. The relative error (Re) between the logic biosensor and the DTPA + ICP-MS method was from -8.1 % to 7.9 %. With the advantages of programmability, scalability, and multicomputing capacity, the molecular logic system can provide a simple, rapid, and smart method for intelligent monitoring of the available Pb and Cd in environmental samples.

Bacterial community in the metal(loid)-contaminated marine vertical sediments of Jinzhou Bay: Impacts and adaptations

Metal(loid) discharge has led to severe coastal contamination; however, there remains a significant knowledge gap regarding its impact on sediment profiles and depth-resolved bacterial communities. In this study, geochemical measurements (pH, nutrient elements, total and bioavailable metal(loid) content) consistently revealed decreasing nitrogen, phosphorus, and metal(loid) levels with sediment depth, accompanied by reduced alpha diversity. Principal coordinate analysis indicated distinct community compositions with varying sediment depths, suggesting a geochemical influence on diversity. Ecological niche width expanded with depth, favoring specialists over generalists, but both groups decreased in abundance. Taxonomic shifts emerged, particularly in phyla and families, correlated with sediment depth. Microbe-microbe interactions displayed intricate dynamics, with keystone taxa varying by sediment layer. Zinc and arsenic emerged as key factors impacting community diversity and composition using random forest, network analysis, and Mantel tests. Functional predictions revealed shifts in potential phenotypes related to mobile elements, biofilm formation, pathogenicity, N/P/S cycles, and metal(loid) resistance along sediment profiles. Neutral and null models demonstrated a transition from deterministic to stochastic processes with sediment layers. This study provides insights into the interplay between sediment geochemistry and bacterial communities across sediment depths, illuminating the factors shaping these ecosystems.

Chemical Speciation, Leaching Behavior, and Environmental Risk Assessment of Trace Elements in the Bottom Ash from Biomass Power Plant

Biomass combustion for power generation stands as a pivotal method in energy utilization, offering a promising approach for renewable energy utilization. However, the substantial volume of slag produced by biomass burning plants poses environmental challenges, impeding sustainable energy practices. This article systematically studies the characteristics of ash generated from typical biomass direct combustion power plant ash and analyzes the chemical composition, trace element content characteristics, leaching characteristics, and chemical forms of biomass bottom ash. Furthermore, it assesses the environmental ecology and bioavailability of trace elements in bottom ash using the ecological risk assessment method and RAC method. The results demonstrate that the biomass bottom ash contains plant nutrients, such as K, Ca, Mg, and P, while the content of harmful trace elements is lower than the relevant Chinese standards. In dissolution experiments, the leaching rate of nearly all elements remains exceptionally low, primarily due to the distribution of trace elements within the lattice structure of stable minerals. Trace elements predominantly exist in the residual phase, Cu and Zn primarily found in organic compounds and sulfide bound states, while other elements mostly exist in the form of iron manganese oxide bound states. Ecological risk assessment indicates a significant risk level for Cd, contrasting with the slight risk associated with other elements. RAC results indicated no ecological risk of all of the trace elements. Consequently, the utilization of bottom ash in agricultural and forestry soils is deemed to be viable. These findings serve as a crucial foundation for biomass bottom ash resource utilization and underpin the sustainable utilization of biomass energy.
