Ecotoxicological impact of naproxen on Eisenia fetida: Unraveling soil contamination risks and the modulating role of microplastics

Soils represent crucial sinks for pharmaceuticals and microplastics, making them hotspots for pharmaceuticals and plastic pollution. Despite extensive research on the toxicity of pharmaceuticals and microplastics individually, there is limited understanding of their combined effects on soil biota. This study focused on the earthworm Eisenia fetida as test organism to evaluate the biotoxicity and bioaccumulation of the typical pharmaceutical naproxen and microplastics in earthworms. Results demonstrated that high concentrations of naproxen (100 mg kg-1) significantly increased the malondialdehyde (MDA) content, inducing lipid peroxidation. Even though the low exposure of naproxen exhibits no significant influence to Eisenia fetida, the lipid peroxidation caused by higher concentration than environmental relevant concentrations necessitate attention due to temporal and spatial concentration variability found in the soil environment. Meanwhile, microplastics caused oxidative damage to antioxidant enzymes by reducing the superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and MDA content in earthworms. Metabolome analysis revealed increased lipid metabolism in naproxen-treated group and reduced lipid metabolism in the microplastic-treated group. The co-exposure of naproxen and microplastics exhibited a similar changing trend to the microplastics-treated group, emphasizing the significant influence of microplastics. The detection of numerous including lipids like 17-Hydroxyandrostane-3-glucuronide, lubiprostone, morroniside, and phosphorylcholine, serves to identify potential biomarkers for naproxen and microplastics exposure. Additionally, microplastics increased the concentration of naproxen in earthworms at sub-organ and subcellular level. This study contributes valuable insights into the biotoxicity and distribution of naproxen and microplastics in earthworms, enhancing our understanding of their combined ecological risk to soil biota.

Contaminants of emerging concern in water and sediment of the Venice Lagoon, Italy

This study investigates for the first time the contamination of water and sediment of the Venice Lagoon by twenty Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs): three hormones, six pharmaceutical compounds (diclofenac and five antibiotics, three of which are macrolides), nine pesticides (methiocarb, oxadiazon, metaflumizone, triallate, and five neonicotinoids), one antioxidant (BHT), and one UV filter (EHMC). Water and sediment samples were collected in seven sites in four seasons, with the aim of investigating the occurrence, distribution, and possible emission sources of the selected CECs in the studied transitional environment. The most frequently detected contaminants in water were neonicotinoid insecticides (with a frequency of quantification of single contaminants ranging from 73% to 92%), and EHMC (detected in the 77% of samples), followed by BHT (42%), diclofenac (39%), and clarithromycin (35%). In sediment the highest quantification frequencies were those of BHT (54%), estrogens (ranging from 35% to 65%), and azithromycin (46%). Although this baseline study does not highlight seasonal or spatial trends, results suggested that two of the major emission sources of CECs in the Venice Lagoon could be tributary rivers from its drainage basin and treated wastewater, due to the limited removal rates of some CECs in WWTPs. These preliminary results call for further investigations to better map priority emission sources and improve the understanding of CECs environmental behavior, with the final aim of drawing up a site-specific Watch List of CECs for the Venice Lagoon and support the design of more comprehensive monitoring plans in the future.

Ketoprofen products induced photosensitization of sulfonamide antibiotics: The cocktail effects of pharmaceutical mixtures on their photodegradation

Indirect photolysis induced by naturally occurring sensitizers constitutes an important pathway accounting for the transformation and fate of many recalcitrant micropollutants in sunlit surface waters. However, the photochemical transformation of micropollutants by photosensitizing pharmaceuticals has been less investigated. In this study, we demonstrated that the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug ketoprofen (KTF) and its photoproducts, 3-acetylbenzophenone (AcBP) and 3-ethylbenzophenone (EtBP), could sensitize the photodegradation of coexisting sulfonamide antibiotics, e.g., sulfamethoxazole (SMX), under artificial 365 nm ultraviolet (UV) and sunlight irradiation. Key reactive species including triplet excited state and singlet oxygen (1O2) responsible for photosensitization were identified by laser flash photolysis (LFP) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques, respectively. High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and structure-related reactivity analyses revealed that the sensitized photolysis of SMX occurred mainly through single electron transfer. The rate constants of sulfonamides sensitized by AcBP photolysis followed the order of sulfisoxazole (SIX)＞sulfathiazole (STZ)＞SMX＞sulfamethizole (SMT). Exposure to sunlight also enhanced the photolysis of SMX in the presence of KTF or AcBP, and water matrix had limited impact on such process. Overall, our results reveal the feasibility and mechanistic aspects of photosensitization of coexisting contaminants by pharmaceuticals (or their photoproducts) and provide new insights into the cocktail effects of pharmaceutical mixtures on their photochemical behaviors in aqueous environment.

Toxicity of commercial and pure forms of three nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in Xenopus laevis embryos before and after ozonation

In this study, the toxic and teratogenic effects of three commercial drugs and their active ingredients on Xenopus laevis embryos before and after ozonation were evaluated using the Frog Embryos Teratogenesis Assay-Xenopus (FETAX). First, the median lethal concentration (LC50) and, if data were available, the median effective concentration, teratogenic index and minimum growth inhibitory concentration were determined for each drug substance without ozonation. Then, the active substance amounts of three selected nominal concentrations (LC50/2, LC50, and LC50×2) of each test substance before ozonation were measured by HPLC analysis and the toxicity of these substances was evaluated after 2, 3, 4, and 5 h of ozonation. In addition, degradation products that may occur during ozonation were evaluated by LC-MS analysis. The 96-h LC50s of Dolphin-diflunisal, Dichloron-diclofenac sodium, and Apranax-naproxen drug-active substance pairs were determined to be 22.3 and 11.1, 25.7 and 18.7, and 47.8 mg active substance/L and 45.3 mg/L, respectively. According to the FETAX test results, the Dolphin-diflunisal drug-active ingredient pair did not cause growth retardation in exposed embryos. Dichloron-diclofenac sodium and Apranax-naproxen drug-active ingredient pairs were both teratogenic and growth inhibitory. In the second stage of the study, in which the effectiveness of ozonation in eliminating the toxic effects of drugs is evaluated, it is seen that ozonation is partially successful in eliminating the toxic effects of Dolphin-diflunisal and Dichloron-diclofenac sodium pairs, but insufficient for eliminating the effects of the Apranax-naproxen pair.

A comparative study of programs to predict direct photolysis rates in wastewater systems

A wide range of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are known to photodegrade in the surface layers of natural waters and wastewater systems. Computer programs such as GCSolar, ABIWAS, APEX, EXAMS and WASP model the direct photolysis rates and half-lives of CECs, usually as a function of the solar irradiance, water molar light extinction, chemical molar light absorption and reaction quantum yield. These programs have been used extensively for studies in natural water systems in the northern hemisphere. However, their applicability to wastewater treatment systems such as waste stabilisation ponds and/or southern hemisphere conditions is not well studied. Here we present a comparative review of the major software used and their potential applicability to predicting direct photolysis rates and half-lives in wastewater. The newer equivalent monochromatic wavelength, approach, which enables the approximation of polychromatic photodegradation via a monochromatic wavelength is also discussed. Current software appears to be less suitable for modelling photodegradation in wastewater systems in the southern hemisphere than the northern hemisphere as their internal databases are based on data from natural waters in the northern hemisphere. This may be because there have been few attempts to model CEC photolysis in wastewater systems, particularly in the southern hemisphere. This indicates that either new software needs to be developed, or these programs need to be updated with data on wastewater matrices and/or the southern hemisphere. We anticipate this review will promote the adaptation of these programs as tools to further the understanding CEC photodegradation in wastewater treatment plants.

Surface Processes Control the Fate of Reactive Oxidants Generated by Electrochemical Activation of Hydrogen Peroxide on Stainless-Steel Electrodes

Low-cost stainless-steel electrodes can activate hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by converting it into a hydroxyl radical (•OH) and other reactive oxidants. At an applied potential of +0.020 V, the stainless-steel electrode produced •OH with a yield that was over an order of magnitude higher than that reported for other systems that employ iron oxides as catalysts under circumneutral pH conditions. Decreasing the applied potential at pH 8 and 9 enhanced the rate of H2O2 loss by shifting the process to a reaction mechanism that resulted in the formation of an Fe(IV) species. Significant metal leaching was only observed under acidic pH conditions (i.e., at pH <6), with the release of dissolved Fe and Cr occurring as the thickness of the passivation layer decreased. Despite the relatively high yield of •OH production under circumneutral pH conditions, most of the oxidants were scavenged by the electrode surface when contaminant concentrations comparable to those expected in drinking water sources were tested. The stainless-steel electrode efficiently removed trace organic contaminants from an authentic surface water sample without contaminating the water with Fe and Cr. With further development, stainless-steel electrodes could provide a cost-effective alternative to other H2O2 activation processes, such as those by ultraviolet light.

Pharmaceutically active compounds in aqueous environment: recent developments in their fate, occurrence and elimination for efficient water purification

The existence of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in the water is a major concern for environmentalists due to their deleterious effects on living organisms even at minuscule concentrations. This review focuses on PhACs such as analgesics and anti-inflammatory compounds, which are massively excreted in urine and account for the majority of pharmaceutical pollution. Furthermore, other PhACs such as anti-epileptics, beta-blockers and antibiotics are discussed because they also contribute significantly to pharmaceutical pollution in the aquatic environment. This review is divided into two parts. In the first part, different classes of PhACs and their fate in the wastewater environment are presented. In the second part, recent advances in the removal of PhACs by conventional wastewater treatment plants, including membrane bioreactors (MBRs), activated carbon adsorption and bench-scale studies concerning a broad range of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) that render practical and appropriate strategies for the complete mineralization and degradation of pharmaceutical drugs, are reviewed. This review indicates that drugs like diclofenac, naproxen, paracetamol and aspirin are removed efficiently by conventional systems. Activated carbon adsorption is suitable for the removal of diclofenac and carbamazepine, whereas AOPs are leading water treatment strategies for the effective removal of reviewed PhACs.

Possible Effects of Changes in Carbonate Concentration and River Flow Rate on Photochemical Reactions in Temperate Aquatic Environments

In temperate environments, climate change could affect water pH by inducing enhanced dissolution of CaSO4 followed by biological sulphate reduction, with the potential to basify water due to H+ consumption. At the same time, increased atmospheric CO2 could enhance weathering of carbonate rocks (e.g., dolomite) and increase the total concentration of dissolved carbonate species. Both processes enhance phototransformation by the carbonate radical (CO3•-), as shown for the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug paracetamol, provided that the dissolved organic carbon of water does not undergo important fluctuations. Climate change could also affect hydrology, and prolonged drought periods might considerably decrease flow rates in rivers. This is a substantial problem because wastewater pollutants become less diluted and, as a result, can exert more harmful effects due to increased concentrations. At the same time, in low-flow conditions, water is also shallower and its flow velocity is decreased. Photochemical reactions become faster because shallow water is efficiently illuminated by sunlight, and they also have more time to occur because water takes longer to cover the same river stretch. As a result, photodegradation of contaminants is enhanced, which offsets lower dilution but only at a sufficient distance from the wastewater outlet; this is because photoreactions need time (which translates into space for a flowing river) to attenuate pollution.

Benchmarking the Persistence of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients in River Systems

Assessing the persistence of organic micropollutants from field data has been notoriously laborious, requiring extensive data including emissions and chemical properties, and the application of detailed mass-balance models, which often contain parameters that are impossible to measure. To overcome some of these obstacles, we developed the concept of persistence benchmarking for large rivers that receive numerous emissions and provide enough residence time to observe the dissipation of compounds. We estimated the dissipation rate constants of 41 compounds (mostly active pharmaceutical ingredients) from five measurement campaigns in the Rhine and Danube rivers using concentration rate profiles with respect to carbamazepine. Dissipation rates clearly distinguished between known fast- and slow-degrading compounds, and campaign-specific boundary conditions had an influence on a minor subset of compounds only. Benchmarking provided reasonable estimates on summer total system half-lives in the Rhine compared to previous laboratory experiments and a mass-balance modeling study. Consequently, benchmarking can be a straightforward persistence assessment method of continuously emitted organic micropollutants in large river systems, especially when it is supported by field monitoring campaigns of proper analytical quality and spatial resolution.

Fate of nutrients and trace contaminants in a large shallow soda lake. Spatial gradients and underlying processes from the tributary river to the reed belt

Shallow lakes provide a multitude of ecosystem functions, but they are particularly vulnerable to natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Understanding the driving factors determining the fate and spatial distribution of nutrients and pollutants in such systems is fundamental to assess the impact of ongoing or future external pressures endangering their ecological integrity. This study investigates the fate of trace contaminants transported into the large shallow Lake Neusiedl, including contaminants representative of different patterns of sources and emission pathways and of environmental behavior, namely metals, pharmaceuticals, an artificial sweetener and perfluoroalkyl substances. Further, it examines the horizontal spatial distribution of nutrients, ions and physico-chemical parameters with an unprecedented detailed focus on the internal variability within the large reed belt. As described in the past e.g. for chloride, evaporation was identified as the process leading to a substantial concentration enrichment of the industrial chemical PFOA and the sweetener acesulfame K from the tributary river into the open lake. This is particularly relevant in view of the predicted future increase of evapotranspiration due to climate change. In contrast, the observed loss of diclofenac, but also of PFOS and carbamazepine suggests that the well-mixed, humic-rich and alkaline Lake Neusiedl offers favorable conditions for the photodegradation of otherwise very persistent chemicals. Another important finding, in the context of possible modifications in lake water levels due to climate change, is the fundamental role played by the connectivity between open lake and reed belt but also by the presence and characteristics of inner water areas within the reed belt region in determining the hydrochemistry of the lake system. By revealing systematic spatial patterns and by focusing on the underlying factors and processes, the understanding offered by this study is of high value for the conservation of shallow lakes.

Impacts of Organic Emerging Contaminants (Erythromycin, Ibuprofen, and Diclofenac) on the Performance of a Membrane Bioreactor Treating Urban Wastewater: A Heterotrophic Kinetic Investigation

The occurrence of emerging organic contaminants, such as pharmaceuticals, is a growing global concern. In this research, for a membrane bioreactor (MBR) laboratory plant operating at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 24 h, fed with real urban wastewater, the heterotrophic biomass behaviour was analysed for two concentrations of erythromycin, ibuprofen, and diclofenac. The concentrations studied for the first phase were erythromycin 0.576 mg L-1, ibuprofen 0.056 mg L-1, and diclofenac 0.948 mg L-1. For Phase 2, the concentrations were increased to erythromycin 1.440 mg L-1, ibuprofen 0.140 mg L-1, and diclofenac 2.370 mg L-1. Heterotrophic biomass was affected and inhibited by the presence of pharmaceutical compounds in both phases. The system response to low concentrations of pharmaceutical compounds occurred in the initial phase of plant doping. Under these operating conditions, there was a gradual decrease in the concentration of mixed liquor suspended solids and the removal of chemical oxygen demand of the system, as it was not able to absorb the effect produced by the pharmaceutical compounds added in both phases.

Development of a surface plasmon resonance based immunosensor for diclofenac quantification in water

A Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) biosensor based on an inhibition immunoassay was developed for the detection of diclofenac (DCF) in aqueous solution. Due to the small size of DCF, an hapten-protein conjugate was produced by coupling DCF to bovine serum albumin (BSA). DCF-BSA conjugate formation was confirmed via MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The resulting conjugate was immobilized onto the surface of a sensor fabricated via e-beam deposition of a 2 nm chromium adhesion layer followed by a 50 nm gold layer onto precleaned BK7 glass slides. Immobilization onto the nano thin gold surface was accomplished by covalent amide linkage through a self-assembled monolayer. Samples were composed of a mixture of antibody at a fixed concentration and DCF at different known concentrations in deionized water, causing the inhibition of anti-DCF on the sensor. The DCF-BSA was obtained with a ratio of 3 DCF molecules per BSA. A calibration curve was performed using concentrations between 2 and 32 μg L^-1. The curve was fitted using the Boltzmann equation, reaching a limit of detection (LOD) of 3.15 μg L^-1 and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 10.52 μg L^-1, the inter-day precision was calculated and an RSD value of 1.96% was obtained; and analysis time of 10 min. The developed biosensor is a preliminary approach to the detection of DCF in environmental water samples, and the first SPR biosensor developed for DCF detection using a hapten-protein conjugate.

The use of agro-waste-based adsorbents as sustainable, renewable, and low-cost alternatives for the removal of ibuprofen and carbamazepine from water

The occurrence of residual pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment poses major toxicological impacts and adds to the increasing pressure on water resources. Many countries are already suffering from water scarcity, and with the burdening costs of water and wastewater treatment, the race towards innovative sustainable strategies for pharmaceutical remediation is ongoing. Out of the available treatment methods, adsorption proved to be a promising, environmentally friendly technique, particularly when efficient waste-based adsorbents are produced from agricultural residues, thus maximizing the value of wastes, minimizing production costs, and saving natural resources from depletion. Among the residual pharmaceuticals, ibuprofen and carbamazepine are heavily consumed and highly occurring in the environment. This paper aims to review the most recent literature on the application of agro-waste-based adsorbents as sustainable alternatives for the removal of ibuprofen and carbamazepine from contaminated waters. Highlights on the major mechanisms implicated in the adsorption of ibuprofen and carbamazepine are presented, and light is shed on multiple operational parameters that hold a key role in the adsorption process. This review also highlights the effects of different production parameters on adsorption efficiency and discusses many limitations currently encountered. Finally, an analysis is included to compare the efficiency of agro-waste-based adsorbents relative to other green and synthetic adsorbents.

Global modeling of lake-water indirect photochemistry based on the equivalent monochromatic wavelength approximation: The case of the triplet states of chromophoric dissolved organic matter

Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) plays key role as photosensitizer in sunlit surface-water environments, and it is deeply involved in the photodegradation of contaminants. It has recently been shown that sunlight absorption by CDOM can be conveniently approximated based on its monochromatic absorption at 560 nm. Here we show that such an approximation allows for the assessment of CDOM photoreactions on a wide global scale and, particularly, in the latitude belt between 60°S and 60°N. Global lake databases are currently incomplete as far as water chemistry is concerned, but estimates of the content of organic matter are available. With such data it is possible to assess global steady-state concentrations of CDOM triplet states (³CDOM*), which are predicted to reach particularly high values at Nordic latitudes during summer, due to a combination of high sunlight irradiance and elevated content of organic matter. For the first time to our knowledge, we are able to model an indirect photochemistry process in inland waters around the globe. Implications are discussed for the phototransformation of a contaminant that is mainly degraded by reaction with ³CDOM* (clofibric acid, lipid regulator metabolite), and for the formation of known products on a wide geographic scale.

Do biotransformation data from laboratory experiments reflect micropollutant degradation in a large river basin?

Identifying a chemical's potential for biotransformation in the aquatic environment is crucial to predict its fate and manage its potential hazards. Due to the complexity of natural water bodies, especially river networks, biotransformation is often studied in laboratory experiments, assuming that study outcomes can be extrapolated to compound behavior in the field. Here, we investigated to what extent outcomes of laboratory simulation studies indeed reflect biotransformation kinetics observed in riverine systems. To determine in-field biotransformation, we measured loads of 27 wastewater treatment plant effluent-borne compounds along the Rhine and its major tributaries during two seasons. Up to 21 compounds were detected at each sampling location. Measured compound loads were used in an inverse model framework of the Rhine river basin to derive k'_bio,field values - a compound-specific parameter describing the compounds' average biotransformation potential during the field studies. To support model calibration, we performed phototransformation and sorption experiments with all the study compounds, identifying 5 compounds that are susceptible towards direct phototransformation and determining K_oc values covering four orders of magnitude. On the laboratory side, we used a similar inverse model framework to derive k'_bio,lab values from water-sediment experiments run according to a modified OECD 308-type protocol. The comparison of k'_bio,lab and k'_bio,field revealed that their absolute values differed, pointing towards faster transformation in the Rhine river basin. Yet, we could demonstrate that relative rankings of biotransformation potential and groups of compounds with low, moderate and high persistence agree reasonably well between laboratory and field outcomes. Overall, our results provide evidence that laboratory-based biotransformation studies using the modified OECD 308 protocol and k'_bio values derived thereof bear considerable potential to reflect biotransformation of micropollutants in one of the largest European river basins.

Medical Household Waste as a Potential Environmental Hazard: An Ecological and Epidemiological Approach

Nowadays, the contamination caused by emerging pollutants is a global concern due to the lack of scientific evidence to demonstrate the risk or toxicity to humans due to the presence of pharmaceutical residues in the environment. This study aimed to identify and describe the disposal practices of unused and unwanted medications, as well as to analyze and identify the most frequent drugs determined on water bodies adjacent to the biggest urban population in Mexico. A two-phase study with an epidemiological and an ecological assessment was performed. The epidemiological phase was carried out with a descriptive cross-sectional study among citizens from Mexico City and the metropolitan area using an electronic survey applied to 719 subjects aimed to assess practices in which pharmaceutical products are disposed. The ecological phase included a review of scientific reports. The results show that nearly 83.5% of those surveyed use inappropriate practices for disposal medicines, the main ones are through the municipal dump or directly in the drain. The ecological approach was carried out by a systematic literature review of original reports published between 2013 to 2023; information about the class of drugs, active substance, environmental compartments, location, and concentration was extracted and presented. Fifty-one different types of pharmaceutical residues were detected in wastewater in Mexico City in the last decade. The results of this study can contribute to the application of public policies for waste management authorities to mitigate the socio-environmental risks due to the inappropriate disposal of medicines.

Acute and Transgenerational Effects of Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs on Daphnia magna

Pharmaceuticals pose a great threat to organisms inhabiting the aquatic environment. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are major pharmaceutical pollutants with a significant presence in freshwater ecosystems. In this study, the impact of indomethacin and ibuprofen, two of the most commonly prescribed NSAIDs, was assessed on Daphnia magna. Toxicity was assessed as the immobilization of animals and used to determine non-lethal exposure concentrations. Feeding was assessed as a phenotypic endpoint and key enzymes were used as molecular endpoints of physiology. Feeding was decreased in mixture exposures for five-day-old daphnids and neonates. Furthermore, animals were exposed to NSAIDs and their mixture in chronic and transgenerational scenarios revealing changes in key enzyme activities. Alkaline and acid phosphatases, lipase, peptidase, β-galactosidase, and glutathione-S-transferase were shown to have significant changes in the first generation at the first and third week of exposure, and these were enhanced in the second generation. On the other hand, the third recovery generation did not exhibit these changes, and animals were able to recover from the induced changes and revert back to the control levels. Overall, our study points towards transgenerational exposures as more impactful laboratory studies to understand pharmaceutical stressors with a combination of molecular and phenotypic markers of physiology.

Evaluating chemicals of emerging concern in the Ganga River at the two major cities Prayagraj and Varanasi through validated analytical approaches

Evaluating environmental water quality means to assess and protect the environment against unfriendly impacts from various organic impurities emerging from industrial emissions and those released during harvesting. Potential risks related with release of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pesticides and pharmaceuticals (PhAcs), and personal care products (PCPs) into the environment have turned into an increasingly serious issue in ecological safety. Monitoring helps in control of chemicals and ecological status compliance to safeguard specific water uses, for example, drinking water abstraction. A longitudinal review was carried out for 55 different persistent organic pollutants (POPs) for the Ganga River which passes through the urban areas of Prayagraj and Varanasi, India, through validated analytical approaches and measurement uncertainty (MU) estimation to assess their potential use for routine analysis. Furthermore, environmental risk assessment (ERA) carried out in the present study has revealed risk quotient (RQ) higher than 1 in a portion of the aquatic bodies. Using a conservative RQ strategy, POPs were assessed for having extensive risks under acute and chronic exposure, proposing that there is currently critical ecological risk identified with these compounds present in the Ganga River. In general, these outcomes demonstrate a significant contribution for focusing on measures and feasible techniques to minimize the unfavorable effects of contaminants on the aquatic environment.

Tuning the pore structure of templated mesoporous poly(melamine-co-formaldehyde) particles toward diclofenac removal

The increasing demand and implementation of pharmaceutics poses severe risk to different aquatic species as detectable contaminant in almost every surface water worldwide. Diclofenac (DCF) as one of the most common used analgesics was investigated as contaminant to be removed by adsorption onto nanoporous poly(melamine-co-formaldehyde) (PMF) particles featuring a very high amount of nitrogen functionalities. To achieve a high specific surface area (up to 416 m²/g) and a tunable pore system by hard templating, four different SiO₂ nanoparticles were used as template. Differences in the pore formation and achieved pore structure were elucidated. For the first time, the adsorption of DCF onto PMF was tested. In batch adsorption experiments, impactful adsorption capacities as high as 76 μmol/g were achieved and complete removal at initial concentrations of 2 mg/L DCF. Differences in the connectivity and the micropore structure were decisive for uptake in low concentrations and the achieved adsorption capacity, respectively. As the presented PMF particles can be easily synthesized with the monomers formaldehyde and melamine combined with colloidal silica as sacrificial template and water as green solvent, this material presents a viable adsorbent for the removal of DCF at a larger scale. Our study further indicates a high potential for the removal of other pharmaceuticals.

Multimarker Responses of Zebrafish to the Effect of Ibuprofen and Gemfibrozil in Environmentally Relevant Concentrations

Pharmaceutical pollution of water bodies is among the top-notch environmental health risks all over the world. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of two common pharmaceuticals namely ibuprofen and gemfibrozil on zebrafish at environmentally relevant concentrations. In zebrafish liver, gemfibrozil caused a decrease in glutathione and glutathione transferase and an increase in catalase but had no effect on lipid peroxidation and protein carbonylation. Ibuprofen altered the antioxidant defense system, promoted protein carbonylation in zebrafish liver, and increased vitellogenin-like protein in the blood. Ibuprofen and particularly gemfibrozil induced lysosomes biogenesis. Lactate dehydrogenase in the blood was also found to be higher in the studied groups. Studied pharmaceuticals did not affect complex II of the electron respiratory chain. Ibuprofen affects zebrafish health status more profoundly than gemfibrozil. Our results showed that pharmaceuticals even in low, environmentally realistic concentrations, induced profound changes in the stress-responsive systems of zebrafish.

Screening of pesticides and emerging contaminants in eighteen Greek lakes by using target and non-target HRMS approaches: Occurrence and ecological risk assessment

Lakes, albeit ecosystems of vital importance, are insufficiently investigated with respect to the degradation of water quality due to the organic micropollutants load. As regards Greece, screening of lake waters is scarce and concerns a limited number of contaminants. However, understanding the occurrence of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and other micropollutants in lakes is essential to appraise their potential ecotoxicological effects. The aim of this study was to deploy a multiresidue screening approach based on liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) to get a first snapshot for >470 target CECs, including pesticides, pharmaceuticals, personal care products (PPCPs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), as well as organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in eighteen Greek lakes in Central, Northern and West Northern Greece. The omnipresent compounds were DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide), caffeine and TCPP (tris (1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate). Maximum concentrations varied among the different classes. DEET was detected at a maximum average concentration of >1000 ng/L in Lake Orestiada, while its mean concentration was estimated at 233 ng/L. The maximum total concentrations for pesticides, PPCPs, PFASs, and OPFRs were 5807, 2669, 33.1, and 1214 ng/L, respectively, indicating that Greek lakes are still threatened by the intense agricultural activity. Besides, HRMS enabled a non-target screening by exploiting the rich content of the full-scan raw data, allowing the 'discovery' of tentative candidates, such as surfactants, pharmaceuticals, and preservatives among others, without reference standards. The potential ecotoxicity was assessed by both the risk quotient method and ECOSAR (Ecological Structure Activity Relationships) revealing low risk for most of the compounds.

Environmentally realistic concentrations of ibuprofen influence life histories but not population dynamics of Daphnia magna

Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that can be found in freshwater ecosystems. Due to its current presence in aquatic ecosystems, this pharmaceutical has aroused concerns about its impact on aquatic biota. As a result, ibuprofen is the one of the most frequently studied pharmaceuticals. However, most of these studies focus on short-term observations of biomarkers and physiological endpoints. This paper presents the outcomes of whole-life-cycle observations and six-month observations of the population dynamics of Daphnia magna reared under the influence of 1 μg/L, 2 μg/L and 4 μg/L of ibuprofen. Individuals reared under the influence of ibuprofen grew slowly, matured later and lived longer. Moreover, they displayed a higher reproduction rate and carried smaller broods but delivered larger neonates. Ibuprofen in concentrations of 1 μg/L and 2 μg/L had the most significant effect on the above traits. The observed impact of ibuprofen at the individual level did not transfer to population size and dynamics. All the populations represented a typical boom and bust cycle with restricted reproduction during the periods of highest population size. This is the first study to explore the linkage between the life histories of aquatic invertebrates and the actual response of their populations to the occurrence of ibuprofen in the environment. The study emphasizes the need to apply the protocol of whole life-cycle observation in tandem with population scrutiny, since such a protocol can reveal the virtual responses of aquatic biota to the presence of chemicals in the environment.

Alternative methods of monitoring emerging contaminants in water: a review

Anthropogenic activities have steadily increased the release of emerging contaminants (ECs) in aquatic bodies, and these ECs may have adverse effects on humans even at their trace (μg L^-1) levels. Their occurrence in wastewater systems is more common, and the current wastewater treatment facilities are inefficient in eliminating many of such persistent ECs. "Gold standard" techniques such as chromatography, mass spectrometry, and other high-resolution mass spectrometers are used for the quantification of ECs of various kinds, but they all have significant limitations. This paper reviews the alternative methods for EC detection, which include voltammetry, potentiometry, amperometry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) based electrochemical methods, colorimetry, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), fluorescence probes, and fluorescence spectroscopy-based optical techniques. These alternative techniques have several advantages over conventional techniques, including low sample volume, excludes solid phase extraction procedure, high sensitivity, selectivity, portability, reproducibility, rapidity, low cost, and the ability to monitor ECs in real time. This review summarises each of the alternative methods for detecting ECs in water samples and their respective limits of detection (LODs). The sensitivity of each technique varied depending on the type of EC measured, type of electrochemical probe and electrode, substrates, type of nanoparticle (NP), the physicochemical parameters of water samples tested, and more. Nevertheless, this paper also focuses on some of the current challenges encountered by these alternative methods in monitoring ECs.

Highly sensitive and simultaneous electrochemical determinations of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in water using nanostructured carbon-based paste electrodes

Simple and fast simultaneous quantifications in water of anti-inflammatory drugs, which belong to the emerging pollutants, represents a great challenge for water quality control. The development of electrochemical methods to meet the simultaneous and concomitant detection requirements depends mainly on the electrode material. The fullerene‑carbon nanofiber (FULL/CNF) and graphene‑carbon nanotubes (GR/CNT) paste electrodes as sensing elements were employed for the first time for the determination of diclofenac (DCF), naproxen (NPX) and ibuprofen (IBP) simultaneously and concomitantly. The comparative morphostructural and electrochemical characterizations of both electrodes were achieved by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Differential-pulsed voltammetry (DPV), chronoamperometry (CA) and multiple-pulsed amperometry (MPA) were used for detection tests. FULL/CNF electrode was suitable to develop a simultaneous DPV-based detection methodology that allowed reaching the lowest limit of detections of 0.230 nM for DCF, 0.310 nM for NPX and 0.180 nM for IBP. GR/CNT electrode did not provide stability for DPV-based detection, but the lowest limits of detection of 0.149 nM for DCF, 0.809 nM for NPX and 0.640 nM for IBP were achieved by MPA-based methodology. Both electrodes, linked to specific detection technique, showed good reproducibility, stability and ability to measure DCF, NPX and IBP simultaneously in aqueous solution. The satisfactory results achieved by analysis of real surface water sample (Bega River, Timisoara city, Romania) indicated that the proposed voltammetric and amperometric methodologies using both electrodes have great potential for practical applications in analysis of different water samples.

Removal of Amoxicillin from Aqueous Media by Fenton-like Sonolysis/H2O2 Process Using Zero-Valent Iron Nanoparticles

High concentrations of antibiotics have been identified in aqueous media, which has diminished the quality of water resources. These compounds are usually highly toxic and have low biodegradability, and there have been reports about their mutagenic or carcinogenic effects. The aim of this study was to apply zero-valent iron-oxide nanoparticles in the presence of hydrogen peroxide and the sonolysis process for the removal of the amoxicillin antibiotic from aqueous media. In this study, zero-valent iron nanoparticles were prepared by an iron chloride reduction method in the presence of sodium borohydride (NaBH4), and the obtained nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and vibrating-sample magnetometry (VSM). Then, using a Fenton-like process, synthetic wastewater containing 100 to 500 mg/L amoxicillin antibiotic was investigated, and the effects of different parameters, such as the frequency (1 and 2 kHz), contact time (15 to 120 min), the concentration of hydrogen peroxide (0.3%, 0.5%, and 6%), the dose of zero-valent iron nanoparticles (0.05, 0.1, 0.5 g/L), and pH (3, 5, 10) were thoroughly studied. A pH of 3, hydrogen peroxide concentration of 3%, ultrasonic-wave frequency of 130 kHz, zero-valent iron nanoparticles of 0.5 g/L, and contaminant concentration of 100 mg/L were obtained as the optimal conditions of the combined US/H2O2/nZVI process. Under the optimal conditions of the combined process of zero-valent iron nanoparticles and hydrogen peroxide in the presence of ultrasonic waves, a 99.7% removal efficiency of amoxicillin was achieved in 120 min. The results show that the combined US/H2O2/nZVI process could be successfully used to remove environmental contaminants, including antibiotics such as amoxicillin, with a high removal percentage.

Heat-activated persulfate for the degradation of micropollutants in water: A comprehensive review and future perspectives

This work is a critical review of the most important studies that have dealt with heat-activated persulfate to degrade persistent micropollutants in the last six years. The effect of the different operating parameters is discussed, wherein in all cases, the efficiency was favored at higher temperatures and oxidant concentrations. Particular emphasis was given to the effect of the aqueous matrix. Since heat activation is a homogeneous process based on the production of free radicals, in most of the studies presented, the removal of pollutants decreases as the complexity of the aqueous matrix increases except in cases where secondary oxidative species are produced that are selective with specific pollutants. It has also been observed that the change in toxicity usually follows the removal of the parent compound despite the formation of several by-products. Nowadays, combining different processes for the simultaneous activation of persulfate seems to be gaining ground. A hybrid process is an interesting strategy to reduce costs and increase efficiency, especially in real wastewater. In this light, the most interesting studies of hybrid systems for the destruction of micropollutants in recent years based on thermally activated persulfate are also summarized. Finally, some steps are proposed for future research towards the industrial application, including the study of chemical mixtures, the integrated toxicity assessment, the examination of simultaneous disinfection and decomposition of pollutants into real wastewater, the estimation of the required costs, and energy the combination of processes and their coupling with renewable sources, and the design of pilot plants and the scale-up of the hybrid processes.

Adsorptive Removal of Naproxen from Water Using Polyhedral Oligomeric Silesquioxane (POSS) Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs)

Covalent organic frameworks are porous crystalline compounds made up of organic material bonded together by strong reversible covalent bonds (these are novel types of materials which have the processability of extended or repeated structures with high performance, like those of thermosets and thermoplastics that produce high surface coverage). These have a long-term effect on an arrangement’s geometry and permeability. These compounds are entirely made up of light elements like H, B, C, N, O and Si. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have emerged as a new threatened species. A hazardous substance known as an “emerging toxin,” such as naproxen, is one that has been established or is generated in sufficient amounts in an environment, creating permanent damage to organisms. COF-S7, OAPS and 2-methylanthraquionone(2-MeAQ), and COF-S12, OAPS and terephthalaldehyde (TPA) were effectively synthesized by condensation (solvothermal) via a Schiff base reaction (R1R2C=NR′), with a molar ratio of 1:8 for OAPS to linker (L1 and L2), at a temperature of 125 °C and 100 °C for COF-S7 and COF-S12, respectively. The compounds obtained were assessed using several spectroscopy techniques, which revealed azomethine C=N bonds, aromatic carbon environments via solid 13C and 29Si NMR, the morphological structure and porosity, and the thermostability of these materials. The remedied effluent was investigated, and a substantial execution was noted in the removal ability of the naproxen over synthesized materials, such as 70% and 86% at a contact time of 210 min and 270 min, respectively, at a constant dose of 0.05 g and pH 7. The maximum adsorption abilities of the substances were found to be 35 mg/g and 42 mg/g. The pH result implies that there is stable exclusion with a rise in pH to 9. At pH 9, the drop significance was attained for COF-S7 with the exception of COF-S12, which was detected at pH 11, due to the negative Foster charge, consequent to the repulsion among the synthesized COFs and naproxen solution. From the isotherms acquired (Langmuir and Freundlich), the substances displayed a higher value (close to 1) of correlation coefficient (R2), which showed that the substances fit into the Freundlich isotherm (heterogenous process), and the value of heterogeneity process (n) achieved (less than 1) specifies that the adsorption is a chemical process. Analysis of the as-prepared composites revealed remarkable reusability in the elimination of naproxen by adsorption. Due to its convenience of synthesis, significant adsorption effectiveness, and remarkable reusability, the as-synthesized COFs are expected to be able to be used as potential adsorbents for eliminating AIDs from water.

Pharmaceuticals in the Aquatic Environment: A Review on Eco-Toxicology and the Remediation Potential of Algae

The pollution of the aquatic environment has become a worldwide problem. The widespread use of pesticides, heavy metals and pharmaceuticals through anthropogenic activities has increased the emission of such contaminants into wastewater. Pharmaceuticals constitute a significant class of aquatic contaminants and can seriously threaten the health of non-target organisms. No strict legal regulations on the consumption and release of pharmaceuticals into water bodies have been implemented on a global scale. Different conventional wastewater treatments are not well-designed to remove emerging contaminants from wastewater with high efficiency. Therefore, particular attention has been paid to the phycoremediation technique, which seems to be a promising choice as a low-cost and environment-friendly wastewater treatment. This technique uses macro- or micro-algae for the removal or biotransformation of pollutants and is constantly being developed to cope with the issue of wastewater contamination. The aims of this review are: (i) to examine the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in water, and their toxicity on non-target organisms and to describe the inefficient conventional wastewater treatments; (ii) present cost-efficient algal-based techniques of contamination removal; (iii) to characterize types of algae cultivation systems; and (iv) to describe the challenges and advantages of phycoremediation.

Peroxyl radicals from diketones enhanced the indirect photochemical transformation of carbamazepine: Kinetics, mechanisms, and products

In surface waters, photogenerated transients (e.g., hydroxyl radicals, carbonate radicals, singlet oxygen and the triplet states of dissolved organic matter) are known to play a role in the transformation of biorecalcitrant carbamazepine (CBZ). Small diketones, such as acetylacetone (AcAc) and butanedione (BD), are naturally abundant and have been proven to be effective precursors of carbon and oxygen centered radicals. However, the photochemical kinetics and mechanisms of coexisting diketones and CBZ are barely known. Herein, the effects of AcAc and BD on the photochemical conversion of CBZ were investigated compared with H₂O₂ which was the main ·OH precursor in the environment. An enhancing effect was observed for the degradation of CBZ by the addition of diketones. The enhancing effect of diketones was pH-dependent and much more significant than H₂O₂ under simulated solar irradiation. On the basis of the identification of transient species and the competition kinetic model, organic peroxyl radicals were found to play a dominant role in CBZ photodegradation, and the second-order rate constants of the reaction between CBZ and peroxyl radicals were determined to be approximately 10⁷-10⁸ M^-1s^-1. Furthermore, mutagenic acridine was found to be the major cumulative intermediate with a yield of > 30% in the presence of diketones, which might be an environmental concern. This work indicates that the coexistence of diketones and persistent organic pollutants might lead to some detrimental effects on aquatic environments if the water is exposed to sunlight.

Pharmaceutical Pollution in Aquatic Environments: A Concise Review of Environmental Impacts and Bioremediation Systems

The presence of emerging contaminants in the environment, such as pharmaceuticals, is a growing global concern. The excessive use of medication globally, together with the recalcitrance of pharmaceuticals in traditional wastewater treatment systems, has caused these compounds to present a severe environmental problem. In recent years, the increase in their availability, access and use of drugs has caused concentrations in water bodies to rise substantially. Considered as emerging contaminants, pharmaceuticals represent a challenge in the field of environmental remediation; therefore, alternative add-on systems for traditional wastewater treatment plants are continuously being developed to mitigate their impact and reduce their effects on the environment and human health. In this review, we describe the current status and impact of pharmaceutical compounds as emerging contaminants, focusing on their presence in water bodies, and analyzing the development of bioremediation systems, especially mycoremediation, for the removal of these pharmaceutical compounds with a special focus on fungal technologies.

Occurrence, sources and environmental risk assessment of pharmaceuticals in the Sea of Marmara, Turkey

In the present study, the occurrence and spatial distribution of selected eleven pharmaceuticals were investigated in the Sea of Marmara, Turkey. Samples were collected from different depths of the nine stations in April and October 2019. Pharmaceuticals were analyzed using liquid-liquid and solid-phase extraction (SPE) methods followed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). All target pharmaceutical compounds were detected at least once in the study area. Gemfibrozil, which belongs to the lipid regulatory group, was the most frequently detected in seawater at high concentrations (<0.016-9.71 μg/L). Ibuprofen (<0.015-2.13 μg/L) and 17α-ethynylestradiol (<0.010-3.55 μg/L) were identified as the other frequently detected pharmaceuticals. In addition, the presence of these selected compounds in April was higher than in October. According to the risk assessment results, naproxen, diclofenac, clofibric acid, gemfibrozil, 17β-estradiol, and 17α-ethynylestradiol represent a high risk to aquatic organisms in the Sea of Marmara. These findings underline the importance of continued monitoring of these compounds as relevant organic contaminants in the study area to take appropriate measures to protect the ecosystem and, ultimately, human health.

Novel highly-active Ag/Bi dual nanoparticles-decorated BiOBr photocatalyst for efficient degradation of ibuprofen

The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect of noble nanometals can be utilized to effectively improve the catalytic performance of semiconductor photocatalysts. In this work, a novel composite photocatalyst of BiOBr microspheres simultaneously decorated by Ag and Bi dual nanoparticles (NPs) has been successfully synthesized by the hydrothermal method plus one-step reduction method. And the morphology, structure, chemical composition and photoelectrical properties of this composite photocatalyst (Ag/Bi-BiOBr) were further characterized. Due to the SPR effect of Ag and Bi dual NPs, Ag/Bi-BiOBr showed the high light absorption with narrow band gap, as well as fast charge separation via metal-semiconductor heterojunction so as to realize an efficient degradation of ibuprofen (IBP) under simulated solar irradiation. Through the further optimization of the loading amounts of Ag and Bi dual NPs, the excellent photocatalytic activity in the Ag/Bi-BiOBr has been achieved that 92.3% of IBP was removed within 60 min, which is among the best results reported so far for IBP degradation via photocatalysis.

Monsoon dilutes the concurrence but increases the correlation of viruses and Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) in the urban waters of Guwahati, India: The context of pandemic viruses

Concurrence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), pathogenic viruses, metals and microbial pollution along with their seasonal variations in the water environment are overarching in the context of existing pandemic, especially for tropical countries. The present study focuses on the seasonal influence on the vulnerability of urban water in Guwahati, the largest city in North-eastern India, through examining the concurrence of seven PPCPs, five viruses, faecal bacteria and nine metals in surface waters during monsoon (Summer-July 2017) and pre-monsoon (Winter-March 2018). Surface water sampling was carried out at different locations of the Brahmaputra River, its tributary Bharalu River (an unlined urban drain), and Dipor Bill Lake (Ramsar-recognized wetland). Both PPCPs and viruses were at high concentrations (e.g. up to 970 ng L^-1 caffeine, 2.5 × 10³ copies mL^-1 pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV)) at the confluence points of urban drains and the river, while they were mostly undetectable at both upstream and downstream locations, implying strong self-purification ability of the river. All the analysed PPCPs and viruses were at much higher concentrations during pre-monsoon i.e., winter than during monsoon, implying heavy dilution and temperature effect during the monsoon. Overall, PPCPs and viruses were more correlated in monsoon but the risk quotient in the urban tributary was higher in pre-monsoon (e.g. 5061 in pre-monsoon and 1515 in monsoon for caffeine). PMMoV was found to be an excellent faecal pollution indicator due to its prevalence, detectability and specificity in all seasons. Overall, the seasonal fluctuations of the non-enveloped viruses monitored in this study is likely to be relevant for SARS-CoV-2. We contribute to address the literature scarcity pertaining to seasonal variations in the prevalence of viruses and their concurrences with contaminants of emerging concern.

Line ferries and cargo ships for the monitoring of marine contaminants of emerging concern: Application along a Europe-Arctic transect

Contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) are a focus in marine protection. Several CECs are released with wastewater effluents to coastal environments and their offshore occurrence has been recently documented. Routine monitoring is key for implementing marine protection acts, however infrastructural, financial, and technical limitations hinder this task along broad spatial transects. Here we show the efficacy of a new infrastructure enabling unmanned sampling of surface water from ships of opportunity in providing reliable and cost-effective routine monitoring of CECs along a Europe-Arctic transect. The distribution and long-range transport of several pharmaceuticals and personal care products, artificial food additives, and stimulants were assessed. Validation of operations through strict procedural and analytical quality criteria is presented. A framework to estimate a compound-specific spatial range (SR) index of marine long-range transport based on monitoring results and information on source spatial distribution, is introduced. Estimated SR values ranged 50-350 km depending on compound, yielding a ranking of long-range transport potential which reflected expectations based on degradation half-lives. SR values were used to calculate prior maps of detection probability that can be used to plan future routine monitoring in the region.

Microalgal-based removal of contaminants of emerging concern

The presence of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in the environment has been recognized as a worldwide concern. In particular, water pollution by CECs is becoming a major global problem, which requires ongoing evaluation of water resources policies at all levels and the use of effective and innovative wastewaters treatment processes for their removal. Microalgae have been increasingly recognized as relevant for wastewater polishing, including CECs removal. These microorganisms are commonly cultivated in suspension. However, the use of planktonic microalgae for wastewater treatment has limitations in terms of microbiological contamination, process effectiveness and sustainability. The use of consortia of microalgae and bacteria represents a significant advance for sustainable wastewater polishing, particularly when the microorganisms are associated as biofilms. These immobilized mixed cultures can overcome the limitations of suspended-microalgae systems and improve the performance of the involved species for CECs removal. In addition, microalgae-bacteria based systems can offer a relevant combined effect for CECs removal and biomass production enhancement. This study reviews the advantages and advances on the use of microalgae for wastewater treatment, highlighting the potential on the use of microalgae-bacteria biofilms for CECs removal and the further biomass valorisation for third-generation biofuel production.

A poly-(L-serine)/reduced graphene oxide-Nafion supported on glassy carbon (PLS/rGO-Nafion/GCE) electrode for the detection of naproxen in aqueous solutions

A new electrode was constructed via the anodic electropolymerization of poly-(L-serine) (PLS) on an rGO-Nafion-modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the detection of the emerging organic contaminant naproxen (NPX). The morphology, crystal phase, and surface elements of the electrode were investigated with SEM, TEM, XRD, Raman, ATR-FTIR, zeta potential, C-H-O, and XPS analyses. Results of the surface analysis showed a porous structure resembling graphene sheets inside the Nafion/GCE architecture. Various electrochemical parameters, including scan rate, pH, and NPX concentration, were studied to evaluate the performance of the electrode. The synergistic effect of PLS and rGO-Nafion greatly facilitated the catalytic oxidation of NPX on PLS/rGO-Nafion/GCE. Electrochemical NPX oxidation was a one-electron transfer and adsorption limited process. The optimal working potential was 0.92 V vs. Ag/AgCl. The oxidation current of NPX increased with the increase in the concentration of analyte and scan rate but decreased with pH. The modified electrode exhibited excellent linearity with respect to NPX concentration in the range of 4.3 to 87 μM and limit of detection of 0.23 μM (S/N = 3). The PLS/rGO-Nafion/GCE is a fast, sensitive, reliable, and economical electrode for the detection of NPX in water.

Synthesis of glutaraldehyde-modified silica/chitosan composites for the removal of water-soluble diclofenac sodium

Composite materials are effective adsorbents for the removal of various types of contaminants, such as pharmaceutical products. However, they require improvement to achieve a good adsorption capacity. This study presents the development of a promising adsorbent: silica/chitosan modified with different proportions of glutaraldehyde, which involves the D-glucosamine units from chitosan. The developed materials were evaluated for their ability to remove diclofenac sodium. The adsorption data showed that the diclofenac adsorption efficiency increased with increasing degree of glutaraldehyde crosslinking. The equilibrium and kinetic data were well fit by the Liu and Elovich models, respectively, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 237.8 mg/g. Therefore, it can be assumed that the process is predominantly chemical and exothermic, with a high affinity between the adsorbents and diclofenac sodium. The adsorption mechanisms were investigated to better understand the interactions, and the predominance of covalent bonds with the self-polymerized glutaraldehyde was verified.

Catalytic ozonation oxidation of ketoprofen by peanut shell-based biochar: effects of the pyrolysis temperatures

A series of peanut shell (HS)-based biochar were prepared at different pyrolysis temperatures and subsequently used as the effective ozonation catalysts for ketoprofen (KET) degradation in aqueous solution. The physicochemical properties and morphology of the obtained biochar were analysed by ICP, TG, XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, BET and etc. characterizations. The results demonstrated that the pyrolysis temperature played an important role on the structure and morphology of HS-based biochar. As the pyrolysis temperature increased, the cellulose and hemicellulose of HS gradually decomposed, resulting in the loss of biochar mass, improvement of the surface roughness, the increase of specific surface area, and the formation of new functional groups. The HS-based biochar pyrolyzed at 600°C (HS600) achieved the fast KET degradation rate with the pseudo-first-order rate constant of 0.922 min^-1 and the low adsorption rate of 1.3% in O₃/HS600 process. Meanwhile, the effects of the HS600 dosage, initial KET concentration, temperature, water matrix, and solution pH on KET degradation were systematically evaluated. Besides, the HS600 displayed great stability and reusability towards KET degradation during multiple cycling experiments. Moreover, the single oxygen, superoxide radical and hydroxyl radical were involved in O₃/HS600 process and the mechanisms for the improvement of KET degradation were also elucidated. It could be speculated that the enhancement of the catalytic ozonation by HS-based biochar was probably attributed to the increased active sites and the intense chemical bonds, and delocalized π electron.

Transformation of Organic Compounds during Water Chlorination/Bromination: Formation Pathways for Disinfection By-Products (A Review)

The purity of drinking water is an important issue of the human life quality. Water disinfection has saved millions people from the diseases spread with water. However, that procedure has a certain drawback due to formation of toxic organic disinfection products. Establishing the structures of these products and the mechanisms of their formation and diminishing their levels in drinking water represent an important task for chemistry and medicine, while mass spectrometry is the most efficient tool for the corresponding studies. The current review throws light upon natural and anthropogenic sources of the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) and the mechanisms of their formation related to the structural peculiarities and the presence of functional groups. In addition to chlorination, bromination is discussed since it is used quite often as an alternative method of disinfection, particularly, for the purification of swimming pool water. The benefits of the contemporary GC/MS and LC/MS methods for the elucidation of DBP structures and study of the mechanisms of their formation are discussed. The reactions characteristic for various functional groups and directions of transformation of certain classes of organic compounds in conditions of aqueous chlorination/bromination are also covered in the review.

Assessment of removal efficiency of pharmaceutical products from wastewater in sewage treatment plants: A case of the sewerage systems Ghana limited, Accra

Pharmaceuticals put the environment at high risk when found in products of wastewater treatment plants, hence need to be removed efficiently. This study quantified selected pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) (diclofenac, aspirin, paracetamol, and ibuprofen) in wastewater and evaluated its removal efficiency from wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Samples were taken from the WWTP of the Sewerage Systems Ghana Limited (SSGL) for 18 consecutive days. Both effluents and influents were tested in the laboratory to determine the concentrations of the various pharmaceutical products. The results reveal diclofenac as the PhAC with the highest concentration in the influent with an average of 121.31 μg/ml. Paracetamol recorded an average of 65.54 μg/ml, then ibuprofen with an average of 19.54 μg/ml. Aspirin was the PhAC with the lowest concentration in the influent with an average of 0.27 μg/ml. Further assessment was also done on the trickling filter (biological filter) which is part of the process plant at the secondary stage to assess how the trickling filter aids in the removal of these selected pharmaceuticals.

The average removal efficiency found were; diclofenac 74%, aspirin 93%, paracetamol 98%, and ibuprofen 99%. The technologies suggested for improvement, particularly for diclofenac, based on comprehensive literature were phototransformation and sorption of diclofenac onto sludge which occurs via absorption and adsorption, that can be adopted by the management of the WWTP at SSGL to help increase the removal efficiency of the selected PhACs. It was also identified that the trickling filter is the stage that substantially aids in the removal of the selected pharmaceuticals due to its special features.

Coupling Suspect and Nontarget Screening with Mass Balance Modeling to Characterize Organic Micropollutants in the Onondaga Lake-Three Rivers System

Characterizing the occurrence, sources, and fate of organic micropollutants (OMPs) in lake-river systems serves as an important foundation for constraining the potential impacts of OMPs on the ecosystem functions of these critical landscape features. In this work, we combined suspect and nontarget screening with mass balance modeling to investigate OMP contamination in the Onondaga Lake-Three Rivers system of New York. Suspect and nontarget screening enabled by liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry led to the confirmation and quantification of 105 OMPs in water samples collected throughout the lake-river system, which were grouped by their concentration patterns into wastewater-derived and mixed-source clusters via hierarchical cluster analysis. Four of these OMPs (i.e., galaxolidone, diphenylphosphinic acid, N-butylbenzenesulfonamide, and triisopropanolamine) were prioritized and identified by nontarget screening based on their characteristic vertical distribution patterns during thermal stratification in Onondaga Lake. Mass balance modeling performed using the concentration and discharge data highlighted the export of OMPs from Onondaga Lake to the Three Rivers as a major contributor to the OMP budget in this lake-river system. Overall, this work demonstrated the utility of an integrated screening and modeling framework that can be adapted for OMP characterization, fate assessment, and load apportionment in similar surface water systems.

Postflood Monitoring in a Subtropical Estuary and Benchmarking with PFASs Allows Measurement of Chemical Persistence on the Scale of Months

Measurements of chemical persistence in natural environments can provide insight into behavior not easily replicated in laboratory studies. However, it is difficult to find environmental situations suitable for such measurements, particularly for substances with half-lives exceeding several weeks. The objective of this study was to demonstrate that a strategic postflood monitoring campaign can be used to quantify transformation half-lives on the scale of months in a real aquatic system. Water samples were collected in the upper Brisbane River estuary on 36 occasions over 37 weeks and analyzed for 127 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), pesticides, and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). High quality time trend data were obtained for 41 substances. For many of these, data on the input of a wastewater treatment plant to the upper estuary were also obtained. A mass balance model of the estuary stretch was formulated and parametrized using PFASs as persistent benchmarking chemicals. Transformation half-life estimates were obtained for 10 PPCPs and 7 pesticides ranging from 18 to 260 days. Furthermore, insight was obtained into dominant transformation processes as well as the magnitude of chemical inputs to the estuary and their sources. The approach developed shows that under certain conditions, estuaries can be used to quantify the persistence of organic contaminants with half-lives of the order of several months.

Exposure of Mytilus trossulus to diclofenac and 4'-hydroxydiclofenac: Uptake, bioconcentration and mass balance for the evaluation of their environmental fate

Diclofenac (DIC) is one of the most widely consumed drugs in the world, and its presence in the environment as well as potential effects on organisms are the subject of numerous recent scientific works. However, it is becoming clear that the risk posed by pharmaceuticals in the environment needs to be viewed more broadly and their numerous derivatives should also be considered. In fact, already published results confirm that the transformation products of NSAIDs including DIC may cause a variety of potentially negative effects on marine organisms, sometimes showing increased biological activity. To date, however, little is known about bioconcentration of DIC and DIC metabolites and the role of sex in this process. Therefore, the present study for the first time evaluates sex-related differences in DIC bioconcentration and estimates bioconcentration potential of DIC metabolite, 4-OH DIC, in the Mytilus trossulus tissues. In the experiment lasting 7 days, mussels were exposed to DIC and 4-OH DIC at concentrations 68.22 and 20.85 μg/L, respectively. Our study confirms that DIC can be taken up by organisms not only in its native form, but also as a metabolite, and metabolised further. Furthermore, in the present work, mass balance was performed and the stability of both studied compounds under experimental conditions was analysed. Obtained results suggest that DIC is more stable than its derivative under the tested conditions, but further analyses of the environmental fate of these compounds are necessary.

Pharmaceutical Compounds in Aquatic Environments-Occurrence, Fate and Bioremediation Prospective

Various contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) have been detected in different ecosystems, posing a threat to living organisms and the environment. Pharmaceuticals are among the many CECs that enter the environment through different pathways, with wastewater treatment plants being the main input of these pollutants. Several technologies for the removal of these pollutants have been developed through the years, but there is still a lack of sustainable technologies suitable for being applied in natural environments. In this regard, solutions based on natural biological processes are attractive for the recovery of contaminated environments. Bioremediation is one of these natural-based solutions and takes advantage of the capacity of microorganisms to degrade different organic pollutants. Degradation of pollutants by native microorganisms is already known to be an important detoxification mechanism that is involved in natural attenuation processes that occur in the environment. Thus, bioremediation technologies based on the selection of natural degrading bacteria seem to be a promising clean-up technology suitable for application in natural environments. In this review, an overview of the occurrence and fate of pharmaceuticals is carried out, in which bioremediation tools are explored for the removal of these pollutants from impacted environments.

Evaluation of ibuprofen contamination in local urban rivers and its effects on immune parameters of juvenile grass carp

Ibuprofen as a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug can be detected in the aquatic environments all over the world. This study evaluated the effects of ibuprofen on the immune parameters of juvenile grass carp at the concentration in real environments which were determined by detecting its concentrations in the surface water of local rivers. The concentration of ibuprofen ranged from 13.2 to 95.5 ng/L with a mean value of 47.9 ng/L in the surface water of local rivers detected by solid-phase extraction followed by LC-MS/MS analysis. Accordingly, juvenile grass carp were exposed to 4.8, 48.0 and 480.0 ng/L of ibuprofen for 14 days. The serum lysozyme activity of these fish decreased, while the serum creatinine levels were not affected after the exposure. Moreover, the mRNA expression of interleukin 6 in the skin and interleukin 1 beta and tumor necrosis factor alpha in the gills was enhanced by this exposure. These results collectively suggest that ibuprofen at environmentally relevant concentration can affect the immune parameters of juvenile grass carp, providing an insight into the possibility of this contaminant to modify the immunostatus of fish.

Lab-In-Syringe with Bead Injection Coupled Online to High-Performance Liquid Chromatography as Versatile Tool for Determination of Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs in Surface Waters

We report on the hyphenation of the modern flow techniques Lab-In-Syringe and Lab-On-Valve for automated sample preparation coupled online with high-performance liquid chromatography. Adopting the bead injection concept on the Lab-On-Valve platform, the on-demand, renewable, solid-phase extraction of five nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, namely ketoprofen, naproxen, flurbiprofen, diclofenac, and ibuprofen, was carried out as a proof-of-concept. In-syringe mixing of the sample with buffer and standards allowed straightforward pre-load sample modification for the preconcentration of large sample volumes. Packing of ca. 4.4 mg microSPE columns from Oasis HLB^® sorbent slurry was performed for each sample analysis using a simple microcolumn adapted to the Lab-On-Valve manifold to achieve low backpressure during loading. Eluted analytes were injected into online coupled HPLC with subsequent separation on a Symmetry C18 column in isocratic mode. The optimized method was highly reproducible, with RSD values of 3.2% to 7.6% on 20 µg L^-1 level. Linearity was confirmed up to 200 µg L^-1 and LOD values were between 0.06 and 1.98 µg L^-1. Recovery factors between 91 and 109% were obtained in the analysis of spiked surface water samples.
