The Mediating Role of School Burnout in the Relationship Between Adolescents' Perception of Loneliness and Quality of Life

PROBLEM

Adolescence is a challenging period of development characterised by social, physical, and cognitive changes. During this period, adolescents are particularly vulnerable to experiencing loneliness, burnout, and depressive symptoms. This study was conducted to determine the mediating role of school burnout in the relationship between adolescents' perception of loneliness and quality of life.

METHODS

This descriptive and correlational study was conducted with 301 adolescent students from a public high school in the capital of Türkiye. The data were collected using the Personal Information Form, the UCLA Loneliness Scale Short Form, the Quality of Life Scale for Children, and the School Burnout Scale. Descriptive statistics, Kruskal-Wallis analysis of variance, Mann-Whitney U test, and Spearman correlation analysis were conducted to evaluate the data. The mediating role of school burnout was examined through mediating variable analysis using Model 4 with the SPSS PROCESS macro.

FINDINGS

As a result of the research, loneliness, school burnout, and quality of life of adolescents are at medium levels. Loneliness negatively impacts adolescents' quality of life, with school burnout serving as a mediating factor. Addressing school burnout may improve outcomes.

CONCLUSION

In line with the study's results, not only nurses but also teachers, counselling units and families should participate in planning traning and practices that will positively affect adolescents' loneliness, quality of life and school burnout. Social support mechanisms in schools should be strengthened.

Examining the role of social bonds on prescription misuse among adolescents in the United States

INTRODUCTION

Prescription misuse (PM) among adolescents in the United States is a significant public health issue, with a reported prevalence of 4.9% in 2022. Understanding the role of social bonds such as parental attachment, peer influence and school engagement is crucial for developing effective prevention strategies.

METHODS

Data from the 2019 National Survey on Drug Use and Health comprised 11,997 adolescents aged 12-17 years. PM was measured as a binary variable, and social bonds were assessed through scales measuring school bonds, parental bonds and community engagement. Binary logistic regression was employed to examine the impact of social bonds on PM while controlling demographics and peer influence.

RESULTS

Findings indicated that adolescents with higher levels of social bonds, specifically school bonds (adjusted odds ratio [AOR] 0.66, 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.53, 0.83], p < 0.05), parental bonds (AOR 0.59, 95% CI [0.45, 0.77], p < 0.001) and positive peer influence (AOR 0.55, 95% CI [0.43, 0.70], p < 0.0001) are less likely to engage in PM. Females (AOR 1.86, 95% CI [1.39, 2.48], p = 0.0001) and low-income adolescents (AOR 2.05, 95% CI [1.36, 3.08], p = 0.0009) were more likely to engage in PM compared to male and high-income counterparts. No significant associations were found between community engagement and PM in adjusted analyses.

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS

This study highlights the protective role of strong parental and social bonds in reducing the risk of PM among US adolescents. The findings highlight the need for income and gender-specific interventions.

Time spent alone and loneliness in Mexican-origin youth: The role of social relationships and personality

Loneliness is a pressing public health concern, particularly among adolescents and young adults. This preregistered study examined changes in time spent alone from 7th to 12th grade, as well as relationship and personality predictors of time spent alone in adolescence and loneliness in early adulthood, using data from a longitudinal study of 674 Mexican-origin youth in the United States, a rapidly growing yet understudied demographic. Time spent alone showed linear increases from 7th to 12th grade, with greater increases in time spent alone in high school for youth who spent a high proportion of time alone at the start of high school (9th grade). Greater time spent alone in 9th grade was significantly predicted by gender, lower peer relationship quality, parent-child support, parental warmth, higher parent-child conflict, parental hostility, and youth neuroticism. However, there were no significant predictors of change in time spent alone throughout the course of high school (from 9th to 12th grade). Lastly, loneliness in young adulthood was predicted by spending a high proportion of time alone, higher neuroticism, and lower extraversion in the 9th grade. Thus, time spent alone in adolescence may be a crucial early indicator of later loneliness.

Adolescent Mental Health and School Belonging in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic and Subsequent Government Lockdowns

PURPOSE

We hypothesized that extended exposure to the COVID-19 pandemic and government lockdown was associated with increased depression and anxiety symptoms among South African adolescents and a sense of school belonging mediated these relationships. We also hypothesized that poor mental health or school belonging impacted alcohol consumption.

METHODS

Embedded in the Asenze Cohort Study, data were collected from adolescents between 2019 and 2021. The Patient Health Questionnaire, General Anxiety Disorder questionnaire and Psychological Sense of School Membership scale were used to measure depression, anxiety, and school belonging, respectively. Alcohol consumption was a cumulative score of the total number of days alcohol was consumed in the previous 30 days. Lockdown exposure was the number of months participants were exposed to lockdown conditions. Structural equation modeling was used to assess the relationship between the outcome variables.

RESULTS

Among 866 adolescents included in the analysis, approximately 20% met the symptom criteria for moderate or severe depression or anxiety. The mean school belonging score was high (23; SD = 5.79) and alcohol consumption low. Lockdown exposure was not directly or indirectly associated with depression or anxiety symptoms. A greater sense of school belonging reduced both depression and anxiety symptoms.

DISCUSSION

This study contradicts previous studies and suggests that lockdown was not associated with poor mental health in this cohort of adolescents. School belonging was high despite school closures and associated with lower depression and anxiety. Research around school belonging and how it can be promoted to better support isolated students is recommended.

Perceived stress and death-related distress in older adults: Exploring the role of social support and emotional loneliness

The purpose of this study was to examine whether emotional loneliness and social support mediated the association between perceived stress and death distress in older adults. The sample consisted of 524 older adults, aged between 65 and 88, living in an urban area in Türkiye (M = 70.05, SD = 5.01). Mediation analyses revealed that perceived stress is positively associated with death distress and emotional loneliness, and negatively associated with social support. Both social support and emotional loneliness mediate the relationship between perceived stress and death-related distress. Additionally, social support mediates the association between emotional loneliness and perceived stress with death distress in older adults. These findings underscore the importance of social resources in promoting mental health and well-being, and in mitigating the adverse effects of stress and loneliness on death-related feelings and thoughts in older adults. By providing emotional and practical assistance, social support can significantly enhance the mental health and well-being of older adults.

The relationship between loneliness and internalizing disorders among young adults: the mediating and moderating role of ego-resilience

Background

The relationship between loneliness and internalizing disorders has been well established in psychological research. This study aims to build on existing research by exploring how different components of loneliness-isolation, relational connectedness, and collective connectedness-interact with ego-resilience to influence anxiety, depression, and hopelessness.

Methods

The study participants were young adults (n = 337) who completed the University of California-Los Angeles Loneliness Scale, Ego Resilience Scale, Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Scale, and Beck Hopelessness Scale. A regression-based moderation and mediation analysis was used to investigate the relationships between the components of loneliness, ego-resilience, and internalizing disorders.

Results

The results of correlational analysis demonstrated that the zero-order correlations between the components of loneliness, isolation, relational connectedness, and collective connectedness, on the one hand, and internalizing disorders, on the other hand, were all significant. Mediation analyses found that ego-resilience partly mediated the relationships between relational connectedness and internalizing disorders, the relationships between collective connectedness and internalizing disorders, and the relationships between isolation and internalizing disorders. Further, moderation analyses found that ego-resilience moderated the relationships between collective connectedness and relational connectedness, respectively, and hopelessness.

Conclusion

This study highlights the central role of ego-resilience in mediating the effects of different facets of loneliness on internalizing disorders. Understanding the mediating and moderating role of ego-resilience can inform therapeutic approaches and interventions aimed at reducing the impact of loneliness on mental health.

Network Structure of Transdiagnostic Dimensions of Emotional Disorders in Adolescents With Subthreshold Anxiety and Depression: Links With Psychopathology and Socio-Emotional Adjustment

BACKGROUND

The transdiagnostic and network model approaches to psychopathology have emerged as an alternative to taxonomic systems. The main goal was to examine the network structure of the transdiagnostic dimensions of emotional disorders in adolescents with subclinical emotional symptoms. In addition, cross-sectional network analyses were conducted to investigate the relationships between transdiagnostic dimensions, psychopathology, and socio-emotional adjustment.

METHOD

The sample consisted of a total of 476 adolescents from 85 schools from different provinces in Spain with subthreshold anxiety and depression. The mean age was 13.77 years (SD = 1.43, range: 10-18 years), 73.9% were female. Several questionnaires assessing transdiagnostic dimensions of emotional disorders, mental health difficulties, self-esteem, perceived social support, sense of belonging at school, and prosocial behaviour were used.

RESULTS

A strong interrelation was found between the transdiagnostic variables, except with the positive temperament dimension. The dimensions with the greatest weight were those of traumatic re-experiencing, intrusive cognitions, avoidance, neuroticism, and depressed mood. Negative relationships were found between the transdiagnostic dimensions of emotional disorders and the protective factors included in the study. Stability analyses indicated that the networks were accurately estimated.

CONCLUSION

The present paper points to the value of conceptualising emotional disorders from a transdiagnostic and network model perspective. In addition, the work provides new insights into the nature of the relationships between transdiagnostic dimensions of emotional disorders, and the role played by risk and protective factors.

Family intimacy and depression: a comparative study among adolescents in Finland

BACKGROUND

Substantial research has demonstrated the strong influence of family factors on adolescent depressive symptoms. However, the mechanisms underlying this relationship, particularly the moderating effects of sex and sexual orientation, remain unclear.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to investigate the direct and indirect effects of family intimacy on depressive symptoms among adolescents, while examining the mediating role of social inclusion and anxiety disorders. Furthermore, it explored how these effects are moderated by sex and sexual orientation.

METHOD

Data from the nationwide School Health Promotion Study in Finland were used (N = 155,166; adolescents aged 14-17 years). The analysis included a multiple mediation model to evaluate the pathways linking family intimacy to depressive symptoms, through social inclusion and anxiety disorders. Moderation analyses were conducted to explore the moderating effects of sex and sexual orientation on these pathways.

RESULTS

Family intimacy had a significant direct negative effect on depressive symptoms. Social inclusion and anxiety disorders were identified as mediators, with social inclusion serving as a significant buffer to depression. Moderation analysis revealed that these effects were stronger for non-heterosexual adolescents and varied by sex, with females showing a stronger impact of social inclusion on depressive symptoms, whereas males were more influenced by the pathway through anxiety disorders.

CONCLUSION

The findings highlight the crucial roles of social inclusion and family intimacy in mitigating depressive symptoms among adolescents. Interventions should prioritize enhancing social inclusion, particularly for non-heterosexual adolescents, and tailor strategies based on sex differences to optimize outcomes.

Exploring physical, subjective and psychological wellbeing profile membership in adolescents: a latent profile analysis

BACKGROUND

Understanding wellbeing in adolescents and within education settings is crucial to supporting young people. However, research defining and exploring wellbeing has typically taken a focus on subjective, psychological, social and emotional domains and has failed to incorporate aspects of physical health and wellbeing. This study aimed to explore how both physical and subjective and psychological wellbeing can be combined to generate different profiles of wellbeing in adolescents, and to understand the characteristics associated with this profile membership.

METHODS

366 adolescents aged 11-16yrs (mean age 12.75) from three mainstream secondary schools across England completed an online survey capturing demographic characteristics, physical, subjective and psychological wellbeing, physical activity, emotional literacy, school belonging, and perceptions of learning ability. Latent profile analysis used a data driven approach to explore profiles of wellbeing using physical wellbeing and positive emotional state and positive outlook as predictors of profile membership. To understand profile characteristics demographics, physical activity and educational variables were added as co-variates.

RESULTS

Three profiles were identified, (1) low wellbeing (n = 68, 19%) displaying low scores across physical wellbeing, positive emotional state and positive outlook, (2) moderate wellbeing (n = 168, 46%) characterised by average levels across physical wellbeing, positive emotional state and positive outlook, and (3) high wellbeing (n = 128, 35%) showing high score across physical wellbeing, positive emotional state and positive outlook. Compared to the high wellbeing profile, the moderate and low profiles membership was characterised by being older, being a girl, lower perceived socio-economic status, fewer hours of physical activity a week, and lower emotional literacy, school belonging and perceptions of learning.

CONCLUSIONS

The results evidence that physical, subjective and psychological wellbeing are closely inter-related, this finding coupled with increased physical activity in the higher wellbeing group signify physical health and activity are important components of overall wellbeing and should form part of a holistic approach to school wellbeing curriculums.

Loneliness and teacher-student relationships in children and adolescents: Multilevel cross-cultural meta-analyses of cross-sectional and longitudinal studies

This study synthesized the literature from international and Chinese databases regarding the associations between loneliness and the quality of affective teacher-student relationships (TSRs) among children and adolescents ages 5.34-17.09 years. Forty-seven studies published between 2005 and 2023 were included in a cross-sectional meta-analysis using a multi-level approach. Moderators of the relationship, including culture, study, sample, and measurement characteristics, were also examined. Findings indicated a significant medium effect size (r = -0.226) between loneliness and TSRs with effects moderated by students' gender and national cultural background (i.e., Hofstede's Power Distance and Long-term/Short-term Orientation Dimensions). Longitudinal meta-analyses were performed with six studies by using cross-lagged regression to investigate the prospective effects between these two variables. Results showed that loneliness predicted subsequent TSRs (β = -0.1661) and TSRs predicted subsequent loneliness (β = -0.0917), indicating a reciprocal prospective relationship over time. The findings emphasize not only the role of teachers in students' experiences of loneliness, but also the role that loneliness has on an individual's relationships with others. Recommendations for intervention include (a) increasing teacher awareness of student loneliness and (b) ensuring that any school-based work considers the specific social-cultural perspective.

Benefits of an online group dance program for adolescents' social bonding and wellbeing

INTRODUCTION

The Covid-19 pandemic and its ensuing effects on mental health made it clearer than ever that social bonds are critical for survival, flourishing, and mental wellbeing. Experimental laboratory-based research with children and adults shows that activities involving movement alignment and joint action, such as dance, can facilitate social bonds.

METHODS

This study examined whether an online group dance intervention positively affects social bonding and wellbeing using a randomized control design. Participants were 58 UK adolescents aged 11-16 years (N = 52 girls, 75% White, 7% Asian/Asian British, 18% Mixed-Other), randomly assigned to an online intervention or waitlist control group. Participants in the intervention group completed an online 5-week hip-hop dance program during the Covid-19 pandemic in January to February 2021. Measures of social bonding, wellbeing, and future orientation were taken at the beginning and end of the program.

RESULTS

Linear mixed model analyses examining group × timepoint interaction showed greater increase in social bonding (p < .0001), and wellbeing (p < .0001) in the intervention vs control group. Moreover, increases in bonding significantly predicted increases in wellbeing (p < .0001), and increases in bonding (p = .03) and wellbeing (p = .0002) significantly predicted increases in the adolescents' hope for the future.

CONCLUSIONS

These data, collected at a time of mass social isolation, show that a 5-week-long online dance activity can help adolescents forge stronger social bonds, and improve their wellbeing and future orientation. Our findings suggest that the wellbeing and future orientation benefits of group dance may stem from having stronger social connectedness, opening up avenues for future research and interventions.

Sense of Belonging at School and on Social Media in Adolescence: Associations with Educational Achievement and Psychosocial Maladjustment

Belongingness is a key factor in the psychological development and school adjustment of children and adolescents. Going beyond the existing literature, the present study evaluated the association between two sources of belongingness, namely sense of belonging at school (SOBAS) and on social media (SOBOSM), and both psychological maladjustment and educational achievement. Sample consisted of 698 early-to-late adolescents (52.3% female, mean age = 13.79 ± 2.09). Both SOBAS and SOBOSM showed negative direct associations with psychological maladjustment. SOBOSM showed a negative direct association with educational achievement. Social media addiction mediated the links between both SOBAS and SOBOSM and psychological maladjustment and education achievement. Overall, findings suggest that adolescents reporting high sense of belonging both at school and on social media may at lower risk for psychological maladjustment. However, adolescents reporting low SOBAS and high SOBOSM may also be a greater risk of SMA, possibly impacting their psychological health and school adjustement.

Alexithymia and attachment on mental health of people with multiple sclerosis: The mediating role of perceived social support and loneliness

BACKGROUND

Multiple sclerosis and its progressive relapsing-remitting nature for MS patients is challenging and significantly affects the mental health of people with MS. We examined the direct effects of alexithymia and attachment on mental health and the indirect effect of attachment, alexithymia, loneliness, and perceived social support on the mental health of people with MS.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Three hundred and forty-five diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS) were deemed eligible for inclusion in the study and selected through the Iranian MS Association. Measures included the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS20), Attachment Style Questionnaire (ASQ), General Health Questionnaire (GHQ28), Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults (SELSA-S), and Perceived Social Support from Family and Friends Questionnaire (PSS-FA and PSS-F). The mental health of MS patients was analyzed using structural equation models (SEM), examining how alexithymia, attachment, social support, and loneliness, directly and indirectly, affect their mental health. The fit of the model to the data was analyzed using the discrepancy function divided by degrees of freedom (CMIN/DF), Normed Fit Index (NFI), Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI), Comparative Fit Index (CFI), and Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA).

RESULTS

The results showed that the model fit was good. Furthermore, findings indicate that 28% (R2 = 0.28) of the mental health changes are explained via study predictors. Alexithymia and attachment directly affect mental health. Attachment style indirectly affects social support and loneliness, while loneliness and family support indirectly affect the mental health of MS patients.

CONCLUSION

The study findings provide valuable insights into the fundamental structures that influence the mental health of individuals with MS. Loneliness and social support are critical mediating factors that significantly impact the mental well-being of these patients. In the times ahead, healthcare professionals must prioritize attachment, alexithymia, social support, and loneliness in their medical and psychological interventions for individuals diagnosed with multiple sclerosis.

Parental Acceptance and Understanding of Autistic Children (PAUACS) - an Instrument Development Study

Currently there are no instruments designed to assess parents' acceptance and understanding of their autistic child. We aimed to develop and evaluate the reliability and validity of a parent-report scale assessing parents' acceptance and understanding of their autistic child - the Parental Acceptance and Understanding of Autistic Children Scale (PAUACS). A total of 158 parents (74 non-autistic, 42 autistic, 42 questioning; mean age 42.69 years) of autistic children (mean age 10.80 years) completed an online survey comprising the prototype PAUACS as well as validated measures of parental sensitivity, neurodiversity affirming attitudes, autistic traits, mental health, and child adjustment and family experience. A subsample of participants (n = 97; 61.4%) completed the PAUACS questionnaire a second time, 2 weeks later, to assess for test-retest reliability. The final 30-item scale demonstrated excellent internal reliability (α = 0.89) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation = 0.92). Exploratory factor analysis revealed a clean structure comprising four distinct factors: Understanding (α = 0.86), Innate (α = 0.74), Acceptance (α = 0.82), and Expectations (α = 0.73). Overall, the PAUACS demonstrates good construct validity. Preliminary evidence of convergent validity and divergent validity was demonstrated. Preliminary evidence suggests PAUACS is a reliable and valid tool in assessing parents' acceptance and understanding of autistic children.

Expectations regarding school decreases emotional distress among college students in Western China: the buffering role of physical exercises

Background

College students in Western China face unique economic, cultural, and educational environments, yet limited studies have specifically investigated the factors or interventions concerning emotional distress within this population.

Aim

This study aimed to explore whether school belongingness mediates the relationship between expectations regarding school and emotional distress among college students in Western China, and whether physical exercise moderates this mediation.

Methods

Employing a cross-sectional design, 1,063 college students in Xinjiang, China were recruited for this study. A self-administered electronic questionnaire assessed expectations regarding school, school belongingness, physical exercise, anxiety, and depression. Structural equation modeling was utilized to analyze mediating and moderating effects.

Results

Expectations regarding school was negatively associated with emotional distress. School exclusion and school acceptance fully mediated the effect of expectations regarding school on emotional distress. Physical exercise moderated the mediating effect of school exclusion, but not that of school acceptance.

Conclusion

Expectations regarding school and school belongingness, particularly the exclusion component, emerge as pivotal factors influencing emotional distress among college students in Western China. Furthermore, physical exercise presents itself as a promising targeted intervention for alleviating emotional distress within this demographic.

Sociodemographic Variables and Psychological Distress of Moroccan College Students

Because college students are an important category of the population highly vulnerable to mental health problems, this study aims to investigate the sociodemographic variables associated with the increase in psychological distress levels among Moroccan college students. Participants (N = 1147; mean age 20.00, SD = 2.6; 703 females and 444 males) completed a survey, which included a sociodemographic questionnaire and the Arabic version of the Brief Symptoms Inventory (BSI). Non-parametric tests were conducted to explore the data. Non-parametric tests revealed that being female, having a physical illness, experiencing depression and anxiety, having sleep problems, and living with only their mother or with a family member other than their parents are associated with a significant increase in the level of psychological distress. In summary, specific sociodemographic factors exert a notable influence on the psychological distress levels experienced by college students. Consequently, it is imperative to intensify research endeavors aimed at delving into the intricacies of college students' mental health and its correlated ramifications.

The cohort trends of social connectedness in secondary school students in Finland between 2017 and 2021

The aim was to investigate the cohort trends of the experienced social connectedness in secondary school students between 2017 and 2021 and whether these trends vary by gender, school level and sociodemographic background. We used nationally representative Finnish data of 450,864 students in lower and upper secondary education. Social connectedness was measured by number of close friends, feelings of loneliness and sense of belonging at school. Adjusted regression analyses included year, gender, school level and sociodemographic factors (parental education, immigrant status of the student and urban-rural area of the school). The results showed that social connectedness declined from 2017 to 2021: 11% decline in having 3+ close friends, 15% increase in loneliness and 8% decline in belonging at school. The decline was especially large in girls and upper secondary school. Although some socio-demographically disadvantaged groups showed lower levels of social connectedness, there were differences by gender, school level and year. Many differences diminished because the more advantaged groups declined faster, i.e. moved towards the less advantaged groups. Declining social connectedness in young people is a worrying trend that requires a public health focus on the whole cohort while accommodating the variation by the individual and environmental context.

Perceived feedback and school belonging: the mediating role of subjective well-being

Introduction

This study examined the interplay between perceived feedback (PF), subjective wellbeing (SWB), and students' sense of belonging to school (SBS). School belonging is a key factor for decisions regarding academic studies, and is usually impacted by PF. The current study explored whether SWB mediates the established relationship between PF and SBS.

Method

This was achieved by applying a mediation model to PISA 2018 data from 12,058 students in four areas of China.

Results

Perceived feedback positively affected students' SBS (β = 0.26, p < 0.01); and that SWB partially mediated this relationship between PF and SBS (β = 0.47, p < 0.01).

Discussion

The findings of this study have the potential to contribute to the existing literature on educational psychology and well-being. By shedding light on the mediating role of SWB, the research offers practical implications for educators and policymakers seeking to enhance students' school belonging and other implications for their academic success. Further research can contribute to this promising area, by focusing on subjective wellbeing and its impact on a range of decisions being made by students during a critical phase of their personal and academic development.

A serial mediation model of sense of belonging to university and life satisfaction: The role of social loneliness and depression

The impact of a sense of belonging (SOB) on life satisfaction is acknowledged. However, research focusing on this dynamic within higher education is sparse. Additionally, the mechanisms underlying this association warrant further investigation. This study aimed to determine the serial mediation effects of loneliness and depression on the relationship between SOB and life satisfaction among college students. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 345 college students (Mage = 22.16, SD = 4.48). The survey instruments included the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), the Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults (SELSA-S), the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS), and the Institutional Integration Scale (IIS). The serial mediation effects were analyzed utilizing Model 6 of Hayes' PROCESS macro in SPSS. The results showed that the sense of belonging to the university had no direct effect on life satisfaction (Effect = 0.105, 95 % CI: -0.076 to 0.286). Loneliness and depression serially mediated the relationship between a sense of belonging to the university and life satisfaction (Effect = 0.029, 95 % CI: 0.012 to 0.051). Depression independently mediated the association between SOB and life satisfaction (Effect = 0.160, 95 % CI: 0.10 to 0.221), whereas loneliness did not serve as a significant independent mediator in the relationship between belonging to the university and life satisfaction (Effect = 0.014, 95 % CI: -0.006 to 0.039). This research enhances comprehension of the fundamental processes linking students' sense of belonging (SOB) with their life satisfaction, offering valuable perspectives for academic institutions to develop strategies to elevate university students' well-being.

Cultural Dimensions Moderate the Association between Loneliness and Mental Health during Adolescence and Younger Adulthood: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Cultural factors, such as country or continent, influence the relationship between loneliness and mental health. However, less is known about how cultural dimensions moderate this relationship during adolescence and younger adulthood, even if these dimensions manifest as country or continent differences. This study aims to examine the potential influence of Hofstede's cultural dimensions on this relationship using a three-level meta-analysis approach. A total of 292 studies with 291,946 participants aged 10 to 24 were included in this study. The results indicate that cultural dimensions, such as individualism vs. collectivism, indulgence vs. restraint, power distance, and long-term vs. short-term orientation, moderated the associations between loneliness and social anxiety, stress, Internet overuse, and negative affect. The association between loneliness and mental health was not moderated by cultural dimensions, such as masculinity and uncertainty avoidance. These findings suggest that culture's influence on the association between loneliness and mental health is based on a domain-specific mechanism.

A translational neuroscience perspective on loneliness: Narrative review focusing on social interaction, illness and oxytocin

This review addresses key findings on loneliness from the social, neurobiological and clinical fields. From a translational perspective, results from studies in humans and animals are included, with a focus on social interaction, mental and physical illness and the role of oxytocin in loneliness. In terms of social interactions, lonely individuals tend to exhibit a range of abnormal behaviors based on dysfunctional social cognitions that make it difficult for them to form meaningful relationships. Neurobiologically, a link has been established between loneliness and the hypothalamic peptide hormone oxytocin. Since social interactions and especially social touch regulate oxytocin signaling, lonely individuals may have an oxytocin imbalance, which in turn affects their health and well-being. Clinically, loneliness is a predictor of physical and mental illness and leads to increased morbidity and mortality. There is evidence that psychopathology is both a cause and a consequence of loneliness. The final section of this review summarizes the findings from social, neurobiological and clinical perspectives to present a new model of the complex construct of loneliness.

Perceived Barriers to Physical Activity Among Youth Living in Rural and Urban Canadian Communities: A Nationally Representative Cross-Sectional Study

BACKGROUND

We used nationally representative data to explore associations among location of residence (rural/urban) and perceived barriers to physical activity (PA) in Canadian youth.

METHODS

We analyzed the 2017 Canadian Community Health Survey, Barriers to Physical Activity Rapid Response data for 12- to 17-year-old youth. Nine items from the survey assessing perceived barriers to PA were combined into 3 barrier domains: resources, motivational, and socioenvironmental. The likelihood of reporting barriers to PA based on rural-urban location was examined using survey-weighted binary logistic regression following a model fitting approach. Sociodemographic factors were modeled as covariates and tested in interaction with location. For each barrier domain, we derived the best-fitting model with fewest terms.

RESULTS

There were no location-specific effects related to reporting any barrier or motivation-related PA barriers. We found a sex by location interaction predicting the likelihood of reporting resource-related barriers. Rural boys were less likely to report resource-related barriers compared with urban boys (odds ratio [OR] = 0.42 [0.20, 0.88]). Rural girls were more likely to report resource-related barriers compared with boys (OR = 3.72 [1.66, 8.30]). Regarding socioenvironmental barriers, we observed a significant body mass index by location interaction demonstrating that rural youth with body mass index outside the "normal range" showed a higher likelihood of reporting socioenvironmental barriers compared with urban youth (OR = 2.38 [1.32, 4.30]). For urban youth, body mass index was unrelated to reporting socioenvironmental barriers (OR = 1.07 [0.67, 1.71]).

CONCLUSION

PA barriers are not universal among Canadian youth. Our analyses highlight the importance of testing interactions in similar studies as well as considering key sociodemographic characteristics when designing interventions.

Death Anxiety and WellBeing in Doctors During COVID-19: The Explanatory and Boosting Roles of Sleep Quality and Work Locality

The COVID-19 pandemic, a global public health crisis, has triggered anxiety and fear of death in general public and particularly among health professionals. This study aimed to assess the direct and mediated associations between death anxiety, sleep quality, and subjective wellbeing in doctors working during the pandemic. A secondary aim was tested to analyze the interactive role of workplace locality in these associations. An indirect-effect model was tested on a sample of 244 doctors working during the pandemic. Findings revealed that the association between death anxiety and subjective wellbeing was mediated through sleep quality. Furthermore, death anxiety significantly and negatively predicted subjective wellbeing in doctors working in rural setups compared to those working in urban setups. The theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed.

School belonging and depressive symptoms: the mediating roles of social inclusion and loneliness

BACKGROUND

Loneliness and depressive symptoms are prevalent among Finns.

OBJECTIVES

This study, which analyzes nationwide data from 149,986 students aged 13-18 years in Finland, focuses on the mediating effects of social inclusion and loneliness in the association between school belonging and depressive symptoms.

METHOD AND RESULTS

The analysis of variance showed that boys reported higher levels of school belonging and social inclusion, whereas girls reported higher levels of loneliness and depressive symptoms. Mediation analysis showed that social inclusion and loneliness partially mediated the effect of school belonging on depressive symptoms, but that social inclusion's effect was much greater than loneliness's. By focusing on the moderating role of sex, it was discovered that social inclusion significantly mediated depressive symptoms in girls more than boys.

CONCLUSION

The importance of social inclusion in preventing depressive symptoms was highlighted in the discussion.

Loneliness, belonging and psychosomatic complaints across late adolescence and young adulthood: a Swedish cohort study

BACKGROUND

Loneliness and belonging refer to social connectedness and are associated with young people's health; however, the relationship between these constructs and their impact on health is still being discussed. A dual continuum model of belonging and loneliness has been suggested, consisting of four groups depending on the state of loneliness and belonging: socially fulfilled (low loneliness, high belonging), socially indifferent (low loneliness, low belonging), socially searching (high loneliness, high belonging), and socially distressed (high loneliness, low belonging). The aim of this study is to examine loneliness and belonging in a Swedish sample of 17-18-years-olds who were followed over 3 years, and the associations that these aspects share with young people's psychosomatic complaints during these ages.

METHODS

Swedish cohort data collected among late adolescents (age 17-18 in 2019) who were followed up in young adulthood (age 20-21 in 2022) (n = 2684) was used to examine the associations between loneliness, belonging, and psychosomatic complaints. Loneliness and belonging were measured by single items and the cross-combinations of these. Three psychosomatic complaints were assessed: stomach ache, headache, and difficulties falling asleep, and a summary index was calculated.

RESULTS

Linear regression analyses showed that loneliness was positively and belonging was negatively cross-sectionally associated with psychosomatic complaints. The socially fulfilled group reported fewer psychosomatic complaints compared to all other groups, while the socially distressed group reported the highest level of psychosomatic complaints. Additional adjustment for sociodemographic characteristics barely affected the estimates. The prospective analysis supported these patterns; however, after adjustment for earlier psychosomatic complaints, the only statistically significant difference in subsequent psychosomatic complaints was found between the socially fulfilled and the socially distressed groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Loneliness and belonging (separately and the cross-combinations of these) were cross-sectionally associated with psychosomatic complaints in late adolescence and in young adulthood. Prospectively, only the most vulnerable group in the dual continuum model, the socially distressed group, experienced more psychosomatic complaints than the socially fulfilled group, indicating a temporal relationship. Knowledge about the more nuanced links may be useful for developing specific public health recommendations and interventions for youth, targeting the most vulnerable groups.

The mediating role of loneliness in the relationship between smartphone addiction and subjective well-being

As smartphones become increasingly prevalent worldwide, the relationship between smartphone addiction and subjective well-being has become a focal point in academic circles. Prior research predominantly delved into the direct correlation between smartphone addiction and subjective well-being, yet there remains a dearth in exploring its underlying mechanisms. This study investigated the mediating role of loneliness in the relationship between smartphone addiction and subjective well-being among Chinese university students. Conducted across 16 universities in eight provinces and municipalities in China, this study encompassed 1527 university students. Data collection utilized scales measuring smartphone addiction, loneliness, and subjective well-being. The findings revealed that: (1) demographic variables such as place of origin, educational level, and family income influenced university students' subjective well-being; (2) a significant negative correlation existed between smartphone addiction and subjective well-being among university students, coupled with a significant positive correlation between smartphone addiction and loneliness, indicating the significant negative predictive effect of smartphone addiction on subjective well-being; (3) loneliness partially mediated the relationship between smartphone addiction and subjective well-being among university students, suggesting that smartphone addiction could directly impact university students' subjective well-being, or indirectly through its effect on loneliness.

The Social Environment Matters for Telomere Length and Internalizing Problems During Adolescence

Depression and anxiety symptoms are on the rise among adolescents. With increasing evidence that cellular aging may be associated with depressive and anxiety symptoms, there is an urgent need to identify the social environment context that may moderate this link. This study addresses this research gap by investigating the moderating role of the social environment on the relation between telomere length and emotional health among adolescents. Participants were 411 non-Hispanic (88.56%) Black (100%) adolescents (M = 14.23 years, SD = 1.85, female = 54%) in a major metropolitan city. Youth and parents reported on an array of social risk and protective factors, and youth provided DNA samples for telomere length measurement. Results demonstrated that the association of telomere length and anxiety symptoms was stronger among youth with higher perceived stress or lower school belongingness, and the association of telomere length with depressive symptoms was stronger under conditions of higher parent inter-partner psychological aggression. The results enhance our understanding of the complex associations between biological aging, the social environment, and mental health in adolescence.

The mediating role of social ostracism in the effect of social media addiction on loneliness in adolescents

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to determine the mediating role of social ostracism in the effect of social media addiction on loneliness in adolescents.

METHODS

This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 1225 adolescent students attending high school in a province in Eastern Turkey between 30 May 2023 and 01 August 2023. The study data were collected using the "Personal Information Form", "Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale", "UCLA Loneliness Scale-Short Form" and "Ostracism Experience Scale for Adolescents". The analysis of the study data was performed by using SPSS 22.0, AMOS V 24.0, and G*Power 3.1 Statistical package software.

RESULTS

It was determined that the model created in line with the determining the mediating role of social ostracism in the effect of social media addiction on loneliness in adolescents was compatible and the model fit indices were within the desired limits x2/df = 4.481, RMSEA = 0.05, CFI = 0.96, GFI = 0.96, AGFI = 0.94, IFI = 0.96. Social media addiction has been found to affect loneliness and social ostracism (p < 0.05). It was found that social ostracism affected the level of loneliness (p < 0.05). It was determined that social ostracism had a mediating role in the effect of social media addiction on loneliness (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

As the level of social media addiction increases, the level of loneliness and social ostracism increases. As the level of social ostracism increases, the level of loneliness increases. Longitudinal studies on the factors affecting loneliness are recommended.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

In order to reduce the loneliness and social ostracism levels of adolescents, their access to social media should be controlled. Programs to reduce social ostracism should be designed.

School Belongingness as a Mediator in the Relationship Between Self-Reported PTSD and Cyber Victimization: Sex Differences

ABSTRACT

The incidence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Traumatized adolescents might cope with maladaptive strategies such as increased Internet usage, which might be a risk for cyber victimization. We investigated the relationship between self-reported PTSD and cyber victimization and the mediator role of school belongingness in this relationship. The sample consisted of 292 adolescents ages 11-14 years old (M = 12.53, SD = 0.71; nfemale = 165, 56.1%; nmale = 129, 43.9%). Results show that males are more likely to be cyber victims and have lower levels of school belongingness than females. In addition, results supported the association between higher levels of PTSD and higher levels of cyber victimization. Traumatized adolescents with high levels of school belongingness are less likely to be cyber victims. These findings highlight the importance of school-related personal and relational characteristics in promoting adolescent mental health.

'A whirlwind of everything': The lived experience of adolescents with co-occurring chronic pain and mental health symptoms

BACKGROUND

Co-occurring chronic pain and mental health issues are prevalent in adolescents, costly to society and can lead to increased risk of complications throughout the lifespan. While research has largely examined paediatric chronic pain and mental health in isolation, little is known about the unique challenges faced by adolescents who experience these co-occurring symptoms. This idiographic study examined the lived experience of adolescents with co-occurring chronic pain and mental health symptoms to identify salient issues for this population.

METHODS

Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted with seven adolescents (11-19 years) self-reporting diagnoses of both pain and mental health issues for a duration of 3 months or longer. Participants were recruited from UK-based schools, pain clinics and charities. Interview transcripts were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis.

RESULTS

Analyses generated two themes 'a whirlwind of everything' and 'putting up fronts', which describe how the experience of co-occurring chronic pain and mental health symptoms typically disrupted adolescents' ability to regulate their physical, psychological and social wellbeing and identity. Adolescents described their symptom experience as like an internal storm over which they had no control. Such experiences required adolescents to embrace a variety of symptom management strategies, with adolescents reporting deliberate efforts to minimize their symptoms to external individuals.

CONCLUSION

Co-occurring pain and mental health symptoms may be experienced in similar ways to individually experienced pain or mental health symptoms, but together, the experience may be both more difficult to manage and more socially isolating.

SIGNIFICANCE

Adolescents with co-occurring chronic pain and mental health symptoms describe the experience as if there was a storm inside of them disrupting their sense of physical, emotional and social wellbeing. This inner chaos interferes with their self-identity and relationships with others. Challenges articulating their experiences, and negative encounters associated with their symptoms, further impact feelings of isolation and difficulties accessing support.

Mental health and loneliness in Scottish schools: A multilevel analysis of data from the health behaviour in school-aged children study

BACKGROUND

Adolescent loneliness and poor mental health represent dual public health concerns. Yet, associations between loneliness and mental health, and critically, how these associations vary in school settings are less understood.

AIMS

Framed by social-ecological theory, we aimed to identify key predictors of adolescent mental health and examine school-level variation in the relationship between loneliness and mental health.

SAMPLE

Cross-sectional data on adolescents from the 2018 wave of the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study (HBSC) in Scotland were used (N = 5286).

METHODS

Mental health was measured as a composite variable containing items assessing nervousness, irritability, sleep difficulties and feeling low. Loneliness was measured via a single item assessing how often adolescents felt 'left out'. Multilevel models were used to identify social-ecological predictors of mental health, associations with loneliness and between-school variation.

RESULTS

Loneliness, as well as demographic, social and school factors, was found to be associated with mental health. Mental health varied across schools, with the between-school difference greater among adolescents with high levels of loneliness. Additionally, the negative effect of loneliness on mental health was stronger in schools with lower average mental health scores.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings suggest that schools can play an important role in shaping adolescent mental health. Our study uniquely identifies that school-based interventions targeting mental health may be especially necessary among lonely adolescents, and programmes aimed at tackling loneliness may be more beneficial in schools with poorer mental health.

Experience of loneliness on well-being among young individuals: A systematic scoping review

A systematic scoping review was conducted to explore the current evidence on the experience of loneliness influencing well-being among youths. The electronic databases Scopus, APA PsycINFO, Emerald Insight and One Search were used to identify relevant studies, followed by an analysis of the text words contained in the title and abstract, and of the index terms used to describe the article. Reference lists of all shortlisted articles were searched for additional studies. 20 studies (quantitative, qualitative and mixed) published in the English language were identified for inclusion. Findings illustrate that the experience of loneliness is a complex, evolutionary process influenced by relational and environmental factors. Results from the studies identified factors that promote lower experience of loneliness and better well-being in future life stages. Future research can substantiate the issues related to young individuals being socially isolated from others for a prolonged duration.

Mediating effect of fear and externality of happiness in the association between psychological maltreatment and psychological well-being

This study aims to explore whether psychological maltreatment predicts young adults' psychological well-being through fear of happiness and externality of happiness. The current study included 490 young adults from a public university in an urban city in Turkey. Participants were 36% male, and they ranged in age from 18 to 39 years (M= 21.77, SD = 2.40). Findings from the study revealed that psychological maltreatment had a significant predictive effect on psychological well-being, fear of happiness, and externality of happiness. Further, fear of happiness and externality of happiness mediated the impact of psychological maltreatment on psychological well-being. These findings indicate that fear and externality of happiness are important sources that can help to explain the association between childhood psychological maltreatment and psychological well-being among young adults. Therefore, there is a need to design a more comprehensive prevention and intervention approach for improving people's psychological well-being in the context of psychological maltreatment.

Examining mediators of associations of food insecurity and being bullied with suicide among in-school adolescents in Eswatini: a cross-sectional study

We examined the potential mediating roles of anxiety and loneliness on the association of concurrent food insecurity (FI) and being bullied (BB) with suicidal behavior (SB) in Eswatini, a lower-middle-income country. We used data from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS; N = 3264), which employed a two-stage cluster sampling: first, 25 schools were selected based on the proportionate probability of enrollment; second, classes were randomly selected. A self-reported 84-item GSHS questionnaire was used to collect data for students aged 13-17 years. FI was measured by requesting students to recall how often they went hungry because of a lack of food at home in the 30 days before the study. Multiple logistic regressions and binary mediation function was applied to examine mediating factors of SB. The prevalence of SB, FI, and BB among adolescents was 27.5%, 7.7%, and 30.2%, respectively. Moreover, the relationship between FI and BB with SB was partly (approximately 24%) mediated by anxiety and loneliness. Our results highlight the mediating roles of anxiety and loneliness in suicidal adolescents who experience FI and BB. In conclusion, interventions for alleviating SB in high-risk adolescents experiencing FI and BB should also be aimed at ameliorating anxiety and loneliness.

Deeply lonely in the borderland between childhood and adulthood - Experiences of existential loneliness as narrated by adolescents

BACKGROUND

Adolescence is associated with different feelings and experiences that can negatively affect adolescents' health and well-being. In the transition between childhood and adulthood, experiences of loneliness are common. A deep form of loneliness is described as existential loneliness. Studies among adults have shown that existential loneliness often arises in connection with transitions and is related to suffering, but may lead to positive experiences when acknowledged and addressed. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore adolescents' experiences of existential loneliness.

METHODS

This was an exploratory-descriptive qualitative study based on narrative interviews with 16 adolescents (median age 17.5). The data were analysed inductively using qualitative content analysis.

FINDINGS

Existential loneliness among adolescents was related to experiences of social exclusion and "in-betweenness". To alleviate their suffering, the adolescents tried to avoid burdensome feelings and thoughts, and they chose between sharing or not sharing their inner lives with someone else.

CONCLUSIONS

It is important to support adolescents' sense of belonging, and they may need assistance in dealing with existential loneliness, as well as with finding constructive and healthy ways of recuperating from the suffering. Professionals need knowledge of existential loneliness to promote adolescents' existential health and well-being.

“I’m Often Alone”: An Ethnographic Study of School Loneliness and Bullying in a Swedish Elementary School

Background

Despite extensive work to prevent and reduce bullying interactions, bullying is still a prevalent problem in many schools. Children and youth also report that they feel involuntarily left out in school. While research has demonstrated the ways in which school bullying is connected to risk factors across different ecological layers or contexts, relatively little consideration has been given to aspects beyond the individuals directly involved in bullying situations, such as the exo, and macrosystem layers.

Objective

The aim of this study was to examine three pupils’ experiences of school loneliness and bullying. The following questions guided the study: (1) What are the pupils’ experiences of school loneliness and bullying? (2) How can the pupils’ experiences of school loneliness and bullying be understood beyond the individuals directly involved in the bullying situations?

Method

The research is based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted at one Swedish elementary school including 34 pupils and 7 teachers in two sixth-grade classes (i.e., ages 11–12). The findings presented in this article are based on a group interview with three pupils about their experiences of school loneliness and bullying. The interview responses are put into perspective using findings from the ethnographic fieldwork. The findings were analysed using methods from constructivist grounded theory and through the lens of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological theory of human development as well as critical bullying studies.

Results

The findings of this study demonstrate the ways bullying interactions are tied to the different layers, or “settings”, of the bullying ecology as the pupils draw from a range of differential points of reference so as to socially evaluate themselves, their classmates, and their peers.

Conclusions

An important conclusion of the study is for principals, teachers, and other school personnel to consider more thoroughly the interdependent interplay of the bullying ecology.

Exploring the relationship between social exclusion and smartphone addiction: The mediating roles of loneliness and self-control

Previous studies have identified many antecedents of smartphone addiction. However, social exclusion as a risk factor for smartphone addiction has not been widely studied, and little is known concerning the psychological mechanism underlying this association. The present study tested the influence of social exclusion on smartphone addiction as well as the mediating roles of loneliness and self-control in this relationship. An online survey was conducted, and the sample consisted of 573 university students (323 females). The results revealed that (1) social exclusion was a positive predictor of smartphone addiction; (2) loneliness and self-control separately mediated the association between social exclusion and smartphone addiction; and (3) loneliness and self-control sequentially mediated the relation between social exclusion and smartphone addiction. Possible explanations were discussed. The findings of the current study would contribute to understanding the relationships between these study variables as well as the psychological mechanisms underlying these associations.

The impact of stay-at-home regulations on adolescents' feelings of loneliness and internalizing symptoms

INTRODUCTION

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the daily social lives of adolescents by severely limiting social interactions which likely heightened levels of loneliness and a variety of internalizing symptoms. However, little is known about how social distancing adherence and subsequent stress caused by the novel social regulations impact adolescents' feelings of loneliness, and later mental health difficulties, including anxiety and depression.

METHOD

To close this gap, we examined the impact of social distancing regulations on adolescents' (N = 79; M_age  = 16.16, SD = 1.15; 47 females; 23 males) depression and anxiety symptoms through loneliness by using data from a 5-week longitudinal study conducted on adolescents in the United States during the initial phases of COVID-19.

RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS

Findings provided evidence that loneliness plays a unique mediating link between social distancing and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Overall, the present study highlights how social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted adolescents' mental health during a developmental period that is considered a turning point for psychopathology.

Loneliness and personal well-being in young people: Moderating effects of individual, interpersonal, and community factors

INTRODUCTION

Loneliness is prevalent among young people. But, there is little work exploring the association between loneliness with well-being among this age group. Framed by social-ecological theory, we examined demographic, interpersonal, and community factors associated with personal wellbeing and, critically, identified malleable moderators of the relationship between loneliness and well-being that could be targeted in intervention efforts.

METHODS

We used cross-sectional, secondary data from 965 young people (aged 16-24) from the Community Life Survey in England. Loneliness was measured using a single-item direct measure; personal wellbeing was measured through a composite measure containing items assessing happiness, life satisfaction, and a sense that life is worthwhile (α = 0.88). Regression techniques were used to assess associations between individual, interpersonal, and community factors and well-being, and to identify moderators of the relationship between loneliness and well-being.

RESULTS

Loneliness was negatively associated with well-being. Chatting with neighbors and having people to provide help moderated the relationship between loneliness and well-being. Full-time students and those with good physical health had higher well-being while being a carer was predictive of lower well-being. All community variables were strongly associated with increased well-being. Of all interpersonal variables investigated, only having people to count on was associated with increased well-being.

CONCLUSIONS

Our results demonstrate that supportive relationships and close community ties are important for reducing the negative impact of loneliness on youth well-being. Interventions to improve well-being could benefit from targeting these aspects of young people's social and community lives, while acknowledging individual vulnerabilities, such as poor physical health.

OBJECTIVE

Parents' phubbing has been found to be positively associated with adolescents' internet-related addiction. However, it remains unknown whether father phubbing would influence adolescents' social networking sites addiction (SNSA), and the mechanisms underlying this association stays largely unknown. This study aims to expand previous research by testing the mediating effect of loneliness, as well as the moderating effects of narcissism and need to belong in the association between father phubbing and adolescents' SNSA.

METHOD

In a cross-sectional design, 4,172 participants (2,189 boys and 1,983 girls; M_age = 16.41 ± .77) from 5 high schools in China completed measures of demographic variables, father phubbing, loneliness, narcissism, need to belong, and SNSA.

RESULTS

Results from regression analyses found that (a) Father phubbing had a positive association with adolescents' SNSA; (b) Loneliness partially mediated this association; (c) Narcissism and need to belong concurrently moderated the association between father phubbing and loneliness. In particular, the effect of father phubbing on loneliness was weaker among students with high narcissism, and among students with low need to belong.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings enrich our understanding of how father phubbing may increase the risk of SNSA among adolescents, and underscore the potential importance of reducing father phubbing and loneliness to prevent adolescents' SNSA.

Association between loneliness, self-esteem and outcome of life satisfaction in Norwegian adolescents aged 15-21

AIMS

Adolescence is an important developmental stage for understanding the role of perceived loneliness and self-esteem on life satisfaction. This study investigated the association between loneliness, self-esteem and the outcome of life satisfaction, as well as potential interaction effects in association with life satisfaction, in a sample of Norwegian adolescents.

METHODS

The study was based on a cross-sectional sample of 1816 adolescents aged 15-21 years. Data were collected in September 2016. The participants reported scores on the five-item Satisfaction with Life Scale, the 10-item Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and one item assessing loneliness. Control variables included sex, age, perceived family economy, parents' education, place of birth and perceived bullying. The data were analysed with descriptive and multiple linear regression analysis.

RESULTS

A significant negative and moderately strong association was found between loneliness and life satisfaction, where the association was stronger for girls than for boys. Self-esteem showed a significant positive and strong association with life satisfaction; however, no significant interaction effect was found.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings show the significant role of both loneliness and self-esteem in association with adolescents' perception of life satisfaction. The findings support promoting self-esteem, belongingness and social integration in all daily life contexts for adolescents to support their life satisfaction.

Psychological Maltreatment and Loneliness in Adolescents: Social Ostracism and Affective Experiences

Psychological maltreatment is an important public health concern that has been linked with a variety of negative psychosocial consequences and adjustment problems in childhood to adulthood. The purpose of the current study sought to explore the direct and indirect associations between psychological maltreatment, social ostracism, affective experiences, and loneliness among high school Turkish adolescents. Participants were comprised of 791 adolescents attending three public high schools in Turkey. Students were mostly male with a mean age of 16.35 (SD = 1.09) years. Findings from the analyses indicated that social ostracism mediated the relationship between psychological maltreatment and both positive and negative affective experiences. Social ostracism and affective experiences mediated the effect of psychological maltreatment on adolescent feelings of loneliness. Results of the present study suggest that social ostracism and affective experiences are important mechanisms that may help to understand the impacts of psychological maltreatment on adolescent feelings of loneliness.

Worldwide increases in adolescent loneliness

INTRODUCTION

Several studies have documented increases in adolescent loneliness and depression in the U.S., UK, and Canada after 2012, but it is unknown whether these trends appear worldwide or whether they are linked to factors such as economic conditions, technology use, or changes in family size.

METHODS

The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) survey of 15- and 16-year-old students around the world included a 6-item measure of school loneliness in 2000, 2003, 2012, 2015, and 2018 (n = 1,049,784, 51% female) across 37 countries.

RESULTS

School loneliness increased 2012-2018 in 36 out of 37 countries. Worldwide, nearly twice as many adolescents in 2018 (vs. 2012) had elevated levels of school loneliness. Increases in loneliness were larger among girls than among boys and in countries with full measurement invariance. In multi-level modeling analyses, school loneliness was high when smartphone access and internet use were high. In contrast, higher unemployment rates predicted lower school loneliness. Income inequality, GDP, and total fertility rate (family size) were not significantly related to school loneliness when matched by year. School loneliness was positively correlated with negative affect and negatively correlated with positive affect and life satisfaction, suggesting the measure has broad implications for adolescent well-being.

CONCLUSIONS

The psychological well-being of adolescents around the world began to decline after 2012, in conjunction with the rise of smartphone access and increased internet use, though causation cannot be proven and more years of data will provide a more complete picture.
