Abstract
The rising incidence of oropharyngeal cancer caused by high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 and HPV18 in the U.S and other developed countries is an important public health issue. This has been attributed to changes in sexual behavior, including the practice of oral sex, which may expose individuals to increased risk of acquiring oral HPV infection. The incidence of oral HPV infections highlights the role of the oral cavity as an important anatomical site in the acquisition and transmission of high-risk HPVs. Generally, the use of mouthwash/oral rinses have focused on targeting the oral bacteriome, and could additionally be formulated for managing the oral virome. Here, we examined virucidal properties of common over-the-counter antibacterial mouthwash products against native HPV16 and HPV18 virion in vitro, and downstream modification of virus infectivity. We tested oral rinses containing essential oils/alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, and cetylpyridinium chloride. Our results demonstrated greater than 90% efficacy against HPV16 inactivation, but comparatively with less efficacy against HPV18. Overall, hydrogen peroxide containing oral rinses demonstrated the best efficacy against both high-risk types, albeit with lower efficacy against HPV18. Prophylactic virucidal oral rinses targeted towards high-risk HPVs could be beneficial in reducing incidental oral HPV load, prevalence, and persistent infections.

Abstract
(1) Introduction: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a significant public health concern associated with various cancers, including a rising incidence of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC). Despite the availability of effective vaccines targeting high-risk HPV types, vaccination rates remain suboptimal. Dental professionals are uniquely positioned to contribute to HPV prevention through education, vaccination advocacy, and early detection. (2) Methods: This narrative review synthesized the literature from 2006 to 2024 on HPV epidemiology, pathophysiology, vaccine efficacy, and the role of dental providers in HPV prevention. Sources included peer-reviewed articles listed in Pubmed and Google Scholar, including observational studies and review articles, guidelines, clinical trials, and governmental data. Key barriers to HPV-related care in dental practice and strategies for overcoming them were analyzed. (3) Results: The review underscores the critical role of dentists in HPV-related disease prevention, highlighting their ability to detect HPV-related lesions, promote vaccine uptake, and address patient concerns. Barriers such as limited knowledge, discomfort discussing HPV, and misinformation were identified. Strategies like incorporating HPV education into dental training, utilizing emerging diagnostic tools, and adopting effective communication approaches can enhance the role of dental professionals in reducing HPV-associated cancer risks. (4) Conclusion: By integrating HPV education, vaccination advocacy, and early detection into routine dental care, dental professionals can play a transformative role in public health. A dental provider's endorsement can increase HPV vaccine uptake and help prevent oral cancer. These efforts align with broader health promotion goals, offering a significant opportunity to reduce the burden of HPV-associated cancers and improve long-term patient outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a prevalent sexually transmitted infection that is a known cause of morbidities such as genital warts and cancers of the cervix, anus, and oropharynx. Non-cervical HPV-related cancers have been a developing problem in North America, increasing in incidence by up to 225% in some instances over a span of two decades. METHODS This study investigated levels of awareness and knowledge of HPV, oropharyngeal cancer (OPC), and the HPV vaccine using a self-administered web-based survey designed specifically for this research. University students (n = 1005) aged 18-30 completed a 42-item questionnaire that included demographic information, awareness questions, and a series of "true/false/I don't know" knowledge questions. RESULTS The data gathered revealed that participants had relatively high levels of awareness. However, many respondents had significant gaps in their knowledge of HPV, OPC, and the HPV vaccine. Collectively, the data indicate that awareness and knowledge of HPV and the value of vaccination may place younger individuals at risk for HPV-related infections. CONCLUSIONS Although a relatively high level of awareness concerning HPV was observed, the gaps in knowledge suggest that further efforts are necessary to educate young adults. While all risk factors cannot be reduced, the present data may guide future efforts directed toward better education on HPV and related health concerns and associated risks.

Abstract
Inappropriate sexual practice like oral sex has been linked with head and neck cancer (HNC). The recent data revealed that about 20% oropharyngeal caner among Indians are associated with oral sex. Thus, we aimed to comprehensively assess the trend of research in oral sex associated with HNC and to predict the research frontiers and potential hotspots in the near future. The publications related to oral sex and HNC were retrieved from Scopus database via systematic search strategy (till 15th July 2023). VOSviewer version 1.6.19 and Biblioshiny software were used to identify the trends and research hotspots. A total of 2,179 original articles has been identified of which United States had the highest number of articles (837) followed by United Kingdom (155) and India (140). The number of articles in the area of oral sex and HNC has been increased significantly over decades (highest in 2022: 169 articles) which suggests the trend of the research. Most of the studies were from the National Cancer Institute and most of the studies were published in oral oncology journal (76) along with the 3231 citations. HNC, Human papilloma virus (HPV), oropharyngeal cancer and oral cancer are the enriched keywords which suggests that the individual practicing oral sex are prone to HPV infection which results into HNC. HPV infection mediated via oral sex might be the reason behind the surge of HNC which needs to be addressed via spreading awareness, proper counseling and integrating sex education in study curriculum.

Abstract
Oral cancer is a significant worldwide health issue which has an annual incidence of over 377,000 new cases. It was historically associated with tobacco and alcohol use, but recent research has also emphasized the role of human papilloma virus (HPV), specifically types 16 and 18, to the development of oropharyngeal malignancies. Human papilloma virus, a common sexually transmitted infection, impacts approximately 9-13% of the worldwide population. Currently, there have been 202 recognized virus types associated with HPV. HPV-positive oral cancers have different clinical and molecular features compared to HPV-negative ones. The HPV-positive tumors tend to better respond to radiation and chemotherapy treatments. This review compiles findings from an extensive literature search in PubMed and Google Scholar. It highlights the growing occurrence of HPV-positive oropharyngeal malignancies, especially among younger age groups, in different regions of the world. There has been a noticeable increase in the occurrence of these tumors, particularly in Europe and the Middle East. The rates of HPV infection are influenced by factors such as inadequate oral hygiene, sexual habits and gender differences. The research emphasizes the necessity for enhanced diagnostic methods, such as PCR-based assays, and shows the potential advantages of HPV vaccination and public health education in reducing the increasing cancer burden. Conducting additional research is crucial in order to create efficient methods for preventing and treating these conditions.

Abstract
Gynecologic cancers develop from the female reproductive organs. Microbial dysbiosis in the gut and oral cavity can communicate with each other through various ways, leading to mucosal destruction, inflammatory response, genomic instability, and ultimately inducing cancer and worsening. Here, we introduce the mechanisms of interactions between gut and oral microbiota and their changes in the development of gynecologic tumors. In addition, new therapeutic approaches based on microbiota modulation are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and the oral microbiome are associated with oropharyngeal cancer. However, population-based data on the association of oral microbiome with oral HPV infection are limited. METHOD A cross-sectional analysis of 5496 20-59-year-old participants in the 2009-2012 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was performed. Associations with oral HPV infection were assessed using multivariable logistic regression for oral microbiome α-diversity (within-sample diversity), and using principal coordinate analysis and permutational multivariate analysis of variance for β-diversity (between-sample heterogeneity). RESULTS Overall, for α-diversity, a lower number of observed amplicon sequence variants (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.996; 95% confidence interval [CI] = .992-.999) and reduced Faith's phylogenetic diversity (aOR = 0.95; 95% CI = .90-.99) were associated with high-risk oral HPV infection. β-diversity showed differentiation of oral microbiome community by high-risk oral HPV infection as measured by Bray-Curtis dissimilarity (R2 = 0.054%; P = .029) and unweighted UniFrac distance (R2 = 0.046%; P = .045). There were differential associations when stratified by sex. CONCLUSIONS Both oral microbiome α-diversity and β-diversity were marginally associated with oral HPV infection. Longitudinal studies are needed to characterize the role of the microbiome in the natural history of oral HPV infection.

Abstract
This review provides practical recommendations for dental practitioners in dealing with oral lesions associated with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), offering clinically relevant insights to increase the awareness of these diseases in the mainstream of everyday practice. STDs are acquired through unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex and are caused by more than 30 different types of bacteria, viruses and protozoa. Saliva, precum, semen, vaginal secretions and menstrual blood could be likely vehicles of infections and defensive barriers to infection by pathogenic microbes could be represented via intact mucosal membrane, the diluent function of saliva, and the antimicrobial action of salivary enzymes that collectively contribute to oral health and protection. STD, can directly and indirectly affect mucous membranes, manifesting with characteristic diagnostic signs and lesions. Given their potential oral manifestations, dental professionals need a comprehensive understanding of STD. The findings of this review lay a foundation for comprehending several STDs, emphasizing the importance of physicians as well dental practitioners being open to discussing sexuality issues with patients and providing appropriate therapeutic interventions.

Abstract
Background & objectives Oral and genital HPV infection in men may be a source of cervical diseases in their women partners as well as disease in themselves. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the performance of Hybrid Capture 2 (HC2) in physician-collected cervical samples and qPCR in self-collected urine and oral gargle samples of women and men, respectively, for hr-HPV infection status and genotyping. Methods One thousand and two hundred biological samples were collected from 200 women (urine, oral gargle, and cervical smear) and 200 men (urine and oral gargle) visiting a referral hospital in the remote Himalayan State of Sikkim. The extracted genomic DNA from urine and gargle samples were profiled for hr-HPV genotypes using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and HC2 for cervical samples. Results In women, hr-HPV was detected in 17.5 per cent of cervical samples by HC2, 25.5 per cent of urine, and 7 per cent of gargle samples by qPCR. For men, hr-HPV was detected in 8 per cent urine and 5 per cent gargle samples by qPCR. Among the HPV-positive women, 56 per cent of urine samples and 20 per cent of oral samples showed single-genotype infection, while the remaining had multiple genotypes. Amongst the HPV-positive men, 62.7 per cent of urine samples and 85.7 per cent of oral samples showed single-genotype infection while the remaining had multiple genotypes. Compared to Pap, the area under ROC was good for HC2 (AUC=0.89) and for qPCR (AUC= 0.852). Interpretation & conclusions HC2 for cervical and qPCR-based HPV DNA assay for urine and gargle sample is suitable for risk profiling for cervical cancer (CC) and oral cancer (OC) screening programmes.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted disease. Certain strains have the potential to cause malignancy in multiple anatomical sites if not cleared by the immune system. In most infected people, HPV is cleared within two years. However, HPV may persist in susceptible individuals with certain risk factors, eventually leading to malignancy. New evidence suggests that over 75% of all oropharyngeal cancers (OPC) are directly attributable to HPV. It is estimated that prophylactic HPV vaccination alone may take at least 25 years to have a significant impact on reducing the incidence of OPC. The temporal link between detection of oral HPV, persistence of the infection and the subsequent development of OPC have been well established. Moreover, men have threefold higher risk than women for acquiring HPV-OPC. This comprehensive review focuses on OPC development in men, highlighting the risk factors associated with malignant transformation of HPV-OPC. Current evidence is insufficient to determine whether early identification of at-risk demographics, screening, and prompt diagnosis result in improved outcomes. Hitherto, the effectiveness of an oral HPV screening program in this regard has not been investigated. Nevertheless, the potential to emulate the success of the cervical screening program remains a very real possibility.

Abstract
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is considered one of the most common sexually transmitted infections and has been shown to play an important role in the pathogenesis of squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) of the cervix and head and neck. Manifestations of HPV infections can be manifold, ranging from asymptomatic infections to benign or potentially malignant lesions to intraepithelial neoplasms and invasive carcinomas. The heterogeneity of clinical manifestations from HPV infection depends on the interactions between the viral agent and the host, a direct consequence of the ability on the part of HPV is to remain silent and to evade and convey the action of the host immune system. The oral mucosa represents one of the tissues for which HPV has a distinct tropism and is frequently affected by infection. While much information is available on the role that HPV infection plays in the development of SCC in the oral cavity, there is less information on asymptomatic infections and benign HPV-induced oral lesions. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to analyze, in light of current knowledge, the early clinical and bio-humoral prognostic features related to the risk of HPV malignant transformation, focusing on subclinical conditions, benign lesions, and the correlation between oral infection and infection in other districts. The data show that the main risk associated with HPV infection is related to malignant transformation of lesions. Although HPV-driven OPSCC is associated with a better prognosis than non-HPV-driven OPSCC, primary prevention and early detection of the infection and affected genotype are essential to reduce the risk of malignant neoplastic complications and improve the prognosis.

Abstract
Aim To investigate whether age at first sexual intercourse could lead to any changes in the risk of oral cavity cancer. Methods A two-sample mendelian randomization was conducted using genetic variants associated with age at first sexual intercourse in UK biobank as instrumental variables. Summary data of Northern American from a previous genome-wide association study aimed at oral cavity cancer was served as outcome. Three analytical methods: inverse variance-weighted, mendelian randomization Egger, and weighted median were used to perform the analysis, among which inverse variance-weighted was set as the primary method. Robustness of the results was assessed through Cochran Q test, mendelian randomization Egger intercept tests, MR PRESSO, leave one out analysis and funnel plot. Results The primary analysis provided substantial evidence of a positive causal relationship age at first sexual intercourse and the risk of oral cavity cancer (p = 0.0002), while a delayed age at first sexual intercourse would lead to a decreased risk of suffering oral cavity cancer (β = -1.013). The secondary outcomes confirmed the results (all β < 0) and all assessments supported the robustness, too (all p > 0.05). Conclusion The study demonstrates that a delayed sexual debut would provide protection against OCC, thus education on delaying sexual intercourse should be recommended.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection can be associated with oral mucosal diseases, including oral candidiasis and HPV infection, which are putative indicators of the immune status. AIM AND METHODS This retrospective cross-sectional study was aimed at assessing the prevalence of HIV-related oral mucosal lesions in a cohort of Italian HIV+ patients regularly attending the Clinics of Infectious Diseases. RESULTS One hundred seventy-seven (n = 177) patients were enrolled and 30 (16.9%) of them showed HIV-related diseases of the oral mucosa. They were mainly found in male patients over 35 years old, undergoing Combination Antiretroviral Therapy (cART), and with CD4+ count < 500/µL. Oral candidiasis was the most common HIV-related oral lesion. No significant correlations could be detected between the prevalence of HPV infection and other clinical parameters (lymphocyte count, cART treatment and viral load). CONCLUSIONS HIV-related oral mucosal diseases can correlate with immunosuppression. Early diagnosis and management of oral lesions in HIV+ patients should be part of the regular follow-up, from a multidisciplinary perspective of collaboration between oral medicine and infectious disease specialists, in an attempt to reduce morbidity due to oral lesions and modulate antiretroviral therapy according to the patient's immune status.

Abstract
The incidence of oropharyngeal cancer (OPSCC) has escalated in the past few decades; this has largely been triggered by high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV). Early cancer screening is needed for timely clinical intervention and may reduce mortality and morbidity, but the lack of knowledge about premalignant lesions for OPSCC poses a significant challenge to early detection. Biomarkers that identify individuals at high risk for OPSCC may act as surrogate markers for precancer but these are limited as only a few studies decipher the multistep progression from HPV infection to OPSCC development. Here, we summarize the current literature describing the multistep progression from oral HPV infection, persistence, and tumor development in the oropharynx. We also examine key challenges that hinder the identification of premalignant lesions in the oropharynx and discuss potential biomarkers for oropharyngeal precancer. Finally, we evaluate novel strategies to improve investigations of the biological process that drives oral HPV persistence and OPSCC, highlighting new developments in the establishment of a genetic progression model for HPV + OPSCC and in vivo models that mimic HPV + OPSCC pathogenesis.

Abstract
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a highly contagious sexually transmitted infection that leads to preventable cancers of the mouth, throat, cervix, and genitalia. Despite the wide availability of HPV Vaccine (HPVV) in Canada, its uptake remains suboptimal. This review aims to identify factors (barriers and facilitators) in HPV vaccine uptake across English Canada at three levels (provider, system, and patient). We explored academic and gray literature to examine factors involved in HPVV uptake and synthesized results based on interpretive content analysis. The review identified the following factors of prime significance in the uptake of the HPV vaccine (a) at the provider level, 'acceptability' of the HPV vaccine, and 'appropriateness' of an intervention (b) at the patient level, the 'ability to perceive' and 'knowledge sufficiency' (c) at the system level, 'attitudes' of different players in vaccine programming, planning and delivery. Further research is needed to conduct population health intervention research in this area.

Abstract
A disparity in the uptake of the Human papillomavirus vaccine (HPVV) among immigrants and refugees leads to a social gradient in health. Recognizing that immigrants and refugees may encounter unique barriers to accessing prevention and care, this study seeks to determine barriers to and facilitators of HPVV among these subgroups to uncover high-resolution quality improvement targets of investment for under-immunized pockets of the population. The study undertook a qualitative inquiry into understanding immigrant and refugee parents' perspectives on HPV infection and HPVV experience through school-based programs. We collected data first through short online surveys (N = 15) followed by one-on-one interviews (N = 15) and then through detailed online surveys (N = 16) followed by focus group discussions (N = 3) with 4-6 participants per group discussion from different groups: Black, South Asian and West Asian. Analysis of surveys and interviews identified that: information, awareness, and education about HPV infection and HPVV were among the most cited barriers that impede the uptake of HPVV. Moreover, vaccine-related logistics were equally important, including not having immunization information packages in different languages and relying solely on the child to bring home packages in paper copies from school-based vaccine programs. A multi-component intervention remains instrumental in enhancing HPV immunization rates, given the inconsistent uptake of HPVV by these subgroups who voice unique barriers and facilitators. An educational campaign that involves educating parents who consent for their child(ren) for HPVV, the children receiving the vaccination, and training staff providing HPVV through school-based immunization programs would be paramount.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The status of human papilloma virus (HPV) and p16 overexpression for nasal vestibule squamous cell carcinoma (NVSCC) is unclear. The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyze the presence of HPV and the role of p16 overexpression as a surrogate marker in cases of NVSCC. METHODS Retrospective analysis was performed on patients who were diagnosed and treated for NVSCC at the University of Tokyo Hospital, Japan. p16 immunohistochemistry was considered positive with at least moderate staining intensity and diffuse staining (≥75% of tumor cells), according to the 8th edition of the American Joint Commission on Cancer. HPV-DNA testing was performed using multiplex polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS Five patients were included in the study. Ages ranged from 55 to 78 years; there were two men and three women; two had T2N0, and three had T4aN0. Surgery was performed in one case, surgery plus radiation therapy (RT) in one case, and chemoradiation therapy (CRT) in three cases. Four of the five tumors showed p16 overexpression. One of five cases had an HPV-16 genotype. The mean follow-up period was 73 months, and all the patients survived. One patient with p16-negative carcinoma had local recurrence and underwent salvage surgery. Of the four patients with p16-positive carcinoma, one with CRT and one with surgery plus RT, each had delayed cervical lymph node metastasis, which was salvaged with neck dissection subsequent RT. CONCLUSIONS In NVSCC, four of the five cases were p16-positive, and one was high-risk HPV infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is an increase in number of Human Papillomavirus related head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HPV-related HNSCC) High risk HPV(HR-HPV) types can be cleared by an infected person, however, some can persist and develop HN cancer. There is a broad knowledge gap regarding HPV and related cancers. MAIN TEXT The aim of this review is to assess existing published knowledge on oral-genital HPV transmission, concordance of HPV genotypes and risk of oral or/and genital lesions among spouses/partners of patients diagnosed with HPV-related HNSCC, identify gaps in the current research and highlight areas that requires further inquiry. METHOD Database like Pub med, Google Scholar, Scopus, Puplon, Wiley online library were used for search strategy. Published papers on transmission, concordance of HPV genotypes and genital lesions among spouses/partners of patients diagnosed with HPV-related HNSCC were included. Papers published from January1,2000 to October 31, 2022 were included. The published papers included are 8 Case reports, 2 cross-sectional studies, 3 Cohort studies and 2 systematic reviews. RESULTS A total of 2125 citations were retrieved from the five sources. 15papers were included. Case reports reported concurrent HPV-related oropharyngeal, tonsillar, unspecified HNSCC, laryngeal and nasopharyngeal carcinoma among couples. The two cross-sectional studies were done. Almost all the tumors taken from patients with HPV-related oropharyngeal carcinoma (HPV-related OPC) and their spouses were positive for identical HPV 16 type. The three cohort studies showed an increase risk of upper aero-digestive tract cancer among male spouses of females with cervical cancer. Two systematic reviews reviewed literature studies which evaluated concurrent cases of HPV-related Oropharyngeal cancers. Examination of these papers showed that the majority of the studies suggested that there is HPV transmission, concordance and risk of HNSCC cancer among spouses with HPV-related oral-genital cancer. No studies evaluated the risk of developing genital cancer in spouses of patients with HNSCC. CONCLUSION The findings of this review highlighted big need of further research on oral-genital HPV infection among spouses of patients diagnosed with HPV-related HNSCC. Studies are needed to evaluate the risk of getting genital and upper aero-digestive tract HPV-related cancer among spouses with HPV-related HNC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the oral mucosa of blood donors (BD) and risk factors associated with HPV and oral cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS Prospective cross-sectional study, population matched to BD from the National Cancer Institute, Mexico for HPV identification in oral cytological samples using the CLART® Human Papillomavirus 2 Kit (35 genotypes) and risk factors. RESULTS Of 352 BD with signed informed consent, 285 were selected by simple randomization. The prevalence of oral HPV was 17.5% (95% CI 13-21.9%), the genotype was identified in 13 cases, with a total of 16 genotypes (10 high-risk), the most common being 16 and 84. Five cases had multiple infections, three with at least one high-risk type. Associations were found for marital status (OR 3.3) and educational level (OR-1.9). CONCLUSIONS The percentage of HPV-positive cases in blood donors with no risk practices was similar to that found in Spanish-speaking population studies in which at least one risk practice was described. The presence of other genotypes with high oncogenic risk and multitype infection, described as a marker of persistence of HPV infection, is highlighted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk for oral human papillomavirus (HPV infection). There are no specific screening guidelines to facilitate the identification of people at risk for oral HPV infection. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of oral high-risk HPV and create a risk score to identify MSM at higher risk for prevalent oral HPV. METHODS We collected baseline data from a clinical trial from a subsample of 500 MSM attending sexually transmitted disease treatment clinics; they provided an oral gargle sample for high-risk HPV detection. We calculated oral high-risk HPV prevalence and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), used a logistic regression model to identify factors associated with high-risk HPV infection, and created a risk score. RESULTS The prevalence of any oral high-risk HPV among MSM was 11.1% (95% CI: 8.6-14.2), with a higher prevalence observed among men living with HIV (14.8%). Factors independently associated with oral high-risk HPV were age ≥40 years (OR = 2.71, 95% CI: 1.28-5.73 compared to <40 years), being HIV-positive with CD4 count 200-499 (OR = 2.76, 95% CI: 1.34-5.65 compared to HIV-negative), and recent recreational use of vasodilators (poppers/sildenafil) (OR = 2.02, 95% CI: 1.02-2.97). The risk score had good discriminatory power (AUC = 0.70, 95% CI: 0.63-0.77). CONCLUSIONS MSM have specific predictors for prevalent oral high-risk HPV, and a risk score could be used by clinicians to target men with vaccine recommendations and counseling, and identify those who could benefit from primary interventions given the available resources, or for referral to dental services for follow-up when available.

Abstract
Oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (OPSCC) represent a major public health challenge. In 2020, the international agency for research on cancer (IARC) recorded 98,421 cases of OPSCC worldwide. Over the past decade, the epidemiological profile of patients with OPSCC has shifted, mainly due to a change in etiological factors. Previously, alcohol and tobacco were considered the primary contributors, but the human papillomavirus (HPV) is now recognized as the leading cause of these tumors. This study aimed to conduct a literature review on the relationship between OPSCC and HPV for the general practitioner. The review examined the primary clinical differences between HPV+ and HPV- OPSCC, their prognosis and treatment. In addition, the various HPV diagnostic methods were analyzed. Although there is a vast amount of literature on HPV, this review is unique in its ability to present the key information in an organized and accessible way and enables healthcare professionals to gain a better understanding of the relationship between HPV and oropharyngeal cancer. This, in turn, can contribute to the prevention of various cancers caused by the HPV virus, including oropharyngeal cancer.

Abstract
The recent increase in high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV)-associated oral and oropharyngeal cancers has gained considerable importance due to their distinct clinical and molecular characteristics. However, the natural history of oral HPV from acquisition to persistence and malignant transformation is still unclear. The global prevalence of oral HPV infection in healthy individuals ranges from 0.67% to 35%, while 31%-38.5% in head and neck cancer (HNC). The persistence rate of oral HR-HPV infection is 5.5% -12.8% globally. India has the highest HNC burden due to apparent differences in predisposing factors compared with the West. The prevalence of oral HPV in healthy individuals and its contribution to HNC is less evident in Indian studies. HR-HPV-associated HNC in this region accounts for 26%, with an active infection in 8%-15% of these tumors. There is a lack of concordance in the expression of p16 as a surrogate marker for HPV detection in HNC because of differences in behavioral risk factors. Due to a lack of evidence, treatment de-escalation cannot be implemented despite the improved outcome of HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancers. This review critically analyzes the existing literature on the dynamics of oral HPV infection and HPV-associated HNC, identifying potential avenues for future research. A better understanding of the oncogenic role of HR-HPV in HNC will help to formulate novel therapeutic approaches and is expected to have a significant public health impact as preventive strategies can be implemented.

Abstract
Human papilloma virus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) is a unique entity with increased responsiveness to treatment and excellent oncologic outcomes. The purpose of this narrative review is to highlight how an improved prognosis for HPV (+) tumors and an ever-increasing understanding of the risk factors, risk stratification, and areas of potential spread are shaping management options. Additionally, we aim to detail how advances in treatment technology on both the surgical and radiation fronts are facilitating the delivery of increasingly personalized and precise treatments. This review will describe key aspects of recent and currently-ongoing trials investigating the de-escalation and individualization of treatment in this patient cohort, and how they are building a foundation for distinct treatment paradigms for HPV (+) tumors. Further studies into the integration of biomarker-guided treatments combined with clinical trial enrollment will help ensure a future of personalized treatments and improved outcomes, both in terms of oncologic outcomes and toxicity, for patients with HPV (+) OPC.

Abstract
The majority of sexually active individuals becomes infected with human papillomavirus (HPV) at least once in their lifetime. Pathways for HPV transmission vary across different mucosal sites per individual. They include autoinoculation within one host, direct transmission between individuals (including perinatal transmission and transmission during sexual activity), and indirect transmission through contact with hands. The authors aim to clarify the prevalence and route of transmission per anatomic site, inter- and intra-individually, using a narrative review of the literature. In conclusion, transmission of HPV to the oral cavity and oropharynx is hypothesised to occur mainly through sexual contact. Transmission of particles through saliva has not been proven and daily living activities are not a documented source of HPV infection. Oropharyngeal HPV related cancer survivors and their partners do not show increased risk of infection during sexual intercourse. Transmission of HPV to the oral cavity (autoinoculation with fingers or transmission through saliva in deep kissing) is probably of limited importance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The development of oral and oropharyngeal cancers is associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. However, debate exists about the prevalence of high-risk oral HPV (HR-HPV) and its associated risk factors. This study evaluated the distribution of genotypes and associated risk factors of oral HR-HPV infection in the normal oral mucosa of the Pakistani female population with general gynecological problems. METHODS A total of 200 females from a regional gynecological hospital in Pakistan were included in this cross-sectional study. A self-administered questionnaire was carried out, followed by the study participants' oral and dental examinations. Whole saliva was collected by a drooling method. The viral DNA extraction and oral HR-HPV genotyping were detected via real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS Among the 200 females (mean age, 37.76 years), 22 females (11%) were positive for oral HR-HPV DNA. Single oral HR-HPV infection was seen in 8%, whereas co-infection was observed in 3% with HPV16 and HPV18 most common genotypes. Comparison of the risk factors like oral sex history odds ratio (OR 8.21, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.85-28.16; p < 0.005), and open-mouth kissing (OR, 5.17; 95% CI 1.48-27.41; p = 0.005) with oral HR-HPV infection was found to be significantly associated. CONCLUSION In Pakistan, oral HR-HPV-positive infection is not uncommon; HPV16 and HPV18 are the most frequent genotypes. Furthermore, this study also provides data that oral HR-HPV positive infection was significantly associated with sexual behaviors. Therefore, preventive health efforts, like health education and vaccination, should be practiced.

Abstract
PURPOSE Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Although HNSCC is mainly caused by tobacco and alcohol consumption, infection by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) has been also associated with the increasing incidence of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (OPSCC) during the past decades. HPV-positive HNSCC is characterized by a higher radiosensitivity compared to HPV-negative tumor. While several clinical trials are evaluating de-escaladed radiation doses strategies in HPV-positive HNSCC, molecular mechanisms associated with relative radioresistance in HPV-negative HNSCC are still broadly unknown. Our goal was to review recently proposed biomarkers of radioresistance in this setting, which may be useful for stratifying tumor's patient according to predicted level of radioresistance. CONCLUSIONS most of biomarkers of radioresistance in HPV-negative HNSCC are identified using a hypothesis-driven approach, based on molecular mechanisms known to play a key role during carcinogenesis, compared to an unsupervised data-driven approach regardless the biological rational. DNA repair and hypoxia are the two most widely investigated biological and targetable pathways related to radioresistance in HNSCC. The better understanding of molecular mechanisms and biomarkers of radioresistance in HPV-negative HNSCC could help for the development of radiosensitization strategies, based on targetable biomarkers, in radioresistant tumors as well as de-escalation radiation dose strategies, based on biological level of radioresistance, in radiosensitive tumors.

Abstract
Human papillomaviruse type 16 (HPV16) is a high-risk serotype. As the main protective antigen protein, L1 protein is also the target protein for diagnosis. A simple label free electrochemical immunosensor (ECIS) was fabricated for ultrasensitive detection of HPV16 L1 protein in this work. Quasi-spherical Ag@Au core-shell nanoparticles on graphene oxide (Ag@AuNPs-GO) was developed as current response amplifier and characterized by UV-Vis Spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Staphylococcal protein A was decorated on the modified electrode and utilized to immobilized the Fc portion of the monoclonal antibody specific for HPV16 L1 protein. Cyclic Voltammetry, Differential Pulse Voltammetry and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy were used to verify the electrochemical performance and interfacial kinetic property. The increased concentration of HPV16 L1 protein led to slow electron transport and linearly decreased differential pulse voltammetry peak current with a detection limit of 0.002 ng mL-1 and a wide linear relationship in the range of 0.005-400 ng mL-1at a regression coefficient (R2) of 0.9948. Furthermore, this ECIS demonstrated acceptable accuracy with good reproducibility, stability and selectivity, suggesting a promising immunological strategy for HPV typing and early screening.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the seventh most common cancer worldwide, and prevalence is still substantially higher in men than in women. Causative factors include smoking and alcohol use, while human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is causally related to a subset of oropharyngeal cancers. In this retrospective study, we aimed to provide estimates on the clinical and economic burden of HNSCC in Spain. METHODS We used the discharge reports from the Spanish Minimum Basic Data Set (MBDS), to retrospectively analyze hospital discharge data in individuals with a diagnosis of HNSCC in any diagnostic position, based on the ICD coding system (ICD-9-CM and ICD10 CM), from 2009 to 2019. RESULTS A total of 175,340 admissions and 14,498 deaths due to laryngeal, pharyngeal and oral cavity cancer were recorded in Spain, of which 85% occurred in men. The most prevalent diagnoses were laryngeal cancer in men (50.9%) and oral cavity cancer in women (49.1%). In general, the hospitalization and death rates for all major head and neck cancer sites decreased in men and increased or remained stable in women during the study period. However, the corresponding rates for tonsil cancer, strongly associated with HPV infection, increased significantly in men. Overall, the economic burden of HNSCC during the study period was estimated at 100 million euros per year on average. CONCLUSION HNSCC still places an important clinical and economic burden on the health system in Spain. Prevention strategies should be prioritized, and vaccination programs against HPV in both sexes should be reinforced.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV)-related benign papillary epithelial neoplasms are common lesions affecting any region of the oral cavity. This study evaluated the trends in frequency, location, and demographics of these lesions over 20 years in a large biopsy service. Following IRB approval, the archives of UF Oral Pathology Biopsy Service between 1995 and 2015 were queried. Cases diagnosed as squamous papilloma, verruca vulgaris, and condyloma acuminatum were included. Extraoral locations, inconclusive diagnoses, or syndrome-related HPV lesions were excluded. Age, gender, location, clinical presentation, and diagnoses were recorded. Data from one calendar year per 5-year span was assessed including the years 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015. A total of 1458 cases were identified over the total 5 calendar years assessed. Papilloma as a percentage of total biopsies per year was as follows: 1995 (2.6%), 2000 (3.3%), 2005 (3.6%), 2010 (4.0%) and 2015 (4.5%), representing a 73% (1.9×) percentage increase. Males (56%) were affected more commonly; however, in patients under 19 years, a female predominance was observed. The overall percentage of lesions in females increased by 30.6% over the time frame. The mean age was 54 years (range 1-93 years) with an increase of 10 years over time. About 1.1% of patients had multifocal lesions and 0.2% had a recurrence. In descending order of frequency, the tongue, soft palate, and mandibular gingiva were most involved. Maxillary gingiva and lower lip were the most common locations in patients under 19. Location varied over time, however, the biggest increase was noted for lesions on the gingiva. Squamous papilloma was the most common histologic variant (93.6%). The incidence of benign HPV-related oral lesions increased substantially over the 2 decades studied. This increase was statistically significant with a p-value <0.00045. Other trends noted included increase in the following: the average age, female involvement, and gingival location. Our results indicate a trend for the overall increase in the prevalence of benign oral HPV lesions in our population.

Abstract
The rise in human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) has prompted a quest for further understanding of the role of high-risk HPV in tumor initiation and progression. Patients with HPV-positive OPSCC (HPV+ OPSCC) have better prognoses than their HPV-negative counterparts; however, current therapeutic strategies for HPV+ OPSCC are overly aggressive and leave patients with life-long sequalae and poor quality of life. This highlights a need for customized treatment. Several clinical trials of treatment de-intensification to reduce acute and late toxicity without compromising efficacy have been conducted. This article reviews the differences and similarities in the pathogenesis and progression of HPV-related OPSCC compared to cervical cancer, with emphasis on the role of prophylactic and therapeutic vaccines as a potential de-intensification treatment strategy. Overall, the future development of novel and effective therapeutic agents for HPV-associated head and neck tumors promises to meet the challenges posed by this growing epidemic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) is an important cause of cancer-related mortality. Early detection of OPC results in a favorable prognosis and higher survival rates. Infection by high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV) is a risk factor for OPC with an upward trend globally. Medical students' knowledge and awareness of HPV-related OPC can be crucial in the preventive efforts. AIM To assess HPV knowledge among medical students at the University of Jordan, with particular focus on its relation to different cancers. METHODS This paper-based survey study was conducted in November 2019. The survey items were based on previously validated surveys used to evaluate HPV-related OPC knowledge among dental students and professionals. To assess HPV knowledge and students' confidence in personal history taking and physical examination, we developed a knowledge and confidence scores that showed acceptable reliability. RESULTS The total number of participants was 1198 students, with a median age of 21 and female predominance (n = 697, 58.2%). Among the participants, 93.3% heard of HPV prior to this survey (n = 1118). Higher levels of knowledge regarding cervical cancer, OPC and HPV vaccination was seen among clinical students compared to their preclinical counterparts, but their overall HPV knowledge was low. Only 18.4% and 21.0% of the clinical students correctly identified the association of HPV with penile and oropharyngeal cancers, respectively. Additionally, 34.5% of the clinical students were not aware of the availability of HPV vaccines. The majority of students (92.0%) reported that the university courses were their major source of knowledge about HPV. CONCLUSION A profound lack of knowledge regarding HPV role in OPC was found among medical students. This insufficiency included several aspects of the virus and its associated diseases. Such gaps in knowledge could have negative consequences in early detection and prevention of OPC and should be addressed by evaluation of the current curriculum.

Introduction
In recent years, interest in human papillomavirus infections as a causative factor in epithelial cancer development has grown. Literature indicates that HPV involvement in malignant transformations in oral mucosa can vary significantly, from 0 up to 87%. The aim of our study was to detect the prevalence of salivary HPV infection among generally healthy adults.
Materials and Methods
The examination involved 139 patients, from whom 139 whole, 1.5ml saliva samples were obtained. HPV DNA was detected by the nested PCR technique. To visualize the PCR products electrophoresis reactions were carried out.
Results
Sample analysis showed that DNA for HPV was detected in 14 patients: 11 positive results were obtained from men, and 3 from women. This yields a high infection rate: 10.07%.
Conclusions
The HPV prevalence in the male group was more than twice as high as in the female group. Also, subclinical oral HPV infection was detected more frequently in young (19–39 years old) and older (=>60 years old) adults.

Abstract
Oral cavity and oropharynx cancer associated with human papil loma virus infection, particularly in young people who are continuously exposed to this virus, is a serious public health problem worldwide, especially for high-risk strains that are most associated with premalignant lesions and tumors. These neoplasms remain asymptomatic for a long time and, when they occur, they are already at an advanced stage. If diagnosed and treated early, oral cancer induced by human papilloma virus allows for high survival, as it often has a more favorable prognosis than oral cancers not directly related to viral infection. In this study, the presence of different high-risk and low-risk HPV strains was investigated to assess the epidemiological status in a population of healthy individuals. Two types of samples, one from the tonsils and one from the base of the tongue, were collected from 2015 healthy individuals of different sex and age. A total of 1885 DNA samples belonging to 1285 patients were tested for the presence of 11 high-risk HPV types plus 4 low-risk HPV types using real-time PCR. Of the patients' DNA samples screened for 15 HPV types, only four samples were positive, all of which were taken from male smokers. These results indicate that newly acquired oral oncogenic HPV infections in the healthy population are rare and, in many cases, controversial. Therefore, more studies are needed to ensure fewer variations in outcomes and a greater clarification of HPV infection and its prevalence in the oropharynx of the healthy population, and to guide efforts to prevent the development of this infection which, if undiagnosed, can lead to the onset of malignant tumors in the oral cavity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human papillomavirus (HPV) is responsible for a growing proportion of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (OPSCCs) among men and White individuals. Whether similar trends apply to women, non‐Whites, and non‐oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (non‐OPSCCs) is unknown. METHODS This is a cross‐sectional analysis combining 2 multi‐institutional case series of incident head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) cases. Incident HNSCCs from 1995 to 2012 were enrolled retrospectively using banked tumor samples and medical record abstraction. Incident HNSCCs from 2013 to 2019 were enrolled prospectively. The prevalence of tumor HPV biomarkers was tested over 3 time periods (1995‐2003, 2004‐2012, and 2013‐2019). Centralized testing was done for p16 immunohistochemistry (p16) and oncogenic HPV in situ hybridization (ISH). RESULTS A total of 1209 incident cases of HNSCC were included. Prevalence of p16‐ and ISH‐positive tumors increased significantly for oropharynx cancers over time. The majority were positive after 2013 for White patients (p16, 92%; P < .001; ISH 94%; P < .001), Black patients (p16, 72%; P = .021; ISH 67%; P = .011), and Hispanic patients (p16, 100%; P = .04; ISH 100%; P = .013). For women with OPSCC, the prevalence of p16‐ and ISH‐positive tumors increased significantly to 82% (P < .001) and 78% (P = .004), respectively. For non‐OPSCCs, there was increased p16 and ISH positivity overall with 24% p16 and 16% ISH positivity in the most recent time period (P < .001 for both). CONCLUSIONS The majority of OPSCCs in US tertiary care centers are now p16 and ISH positive for all sex and race groups. In some populations in the United States, 91% of OPSCCs are now caused by HPV. Few non‐OPSCCs are p16 and ISH positive. This study evaluates the prevalence of p16 and in situ hybridization positivity in head and neck cancers over time. This study shows an increase in prevalence over time among women and non‐Whites, 2 groups that are understudied in the epidemiology of human papillomavirus.

Abstract
(1) Background: Oral mucosa lesions (OMLs) are diagnosed worldwide in any population, age or gender, but in varied prevalence. OMLs can be found in each site of the oral mucosa; for some of them, it is characteristic to have a bilateral/symmetrical or unilateral/nonsymmetrical mucosal manifestation. The knowledge about its prevalence in varied populations can be useful from a clinical point of view. The aim of this study is to assess the prevalence of OMLs in patients attending outpatient dental clinic; (2) Retrospective analysis of 2747 patients’ oral cavity medical charts, who referred to oral pathology outpatient clinic. The type of diagnosed oral lesion, sex and age were evaluated. p ≤ 0.05 was considered statistically significant; (3) Results: In this study, the overall prevalence of oral mucosal lesions was found to be higher in older than younger patients. In our study, the age median was the highest in patients with xerostomia, burning mouth syndrome, angular cheilitis and oral candidiasis. The youngest median age was observed in patients with aphthae, mucocele and gingival enlargement. The higher OMLs frequency was related with the female gender. (4) It is important for clinicians to be familiar not only with distinctive features, which sometimes may not be clear, but also with linking the occurrence of OMLs with the gender and age.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine whether adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP) initiate and are up-to-date with the human papillomavirus (HPV) immunization series compared to adolescents in the general population. METHODS Data on initiation and up-to-date status of the HPV series were collected on adolescents with CP aged 13-17 years old (n = 74) via retrospective medical record review and compared to 616 age-matched peers from the National Immunization Survey, Teen 2019. Analysis by gender, Gross Motor Functional Classification System (GMFCS) level, and ambulatory status was performed in the CP group. RESULTS Adolescents with CP were three times less likely to start (p < 0.001) and two times less likely to be up-to-date (p = 0.004) with the HPV immunization series compared to age-matched peers. When the HPV immunization series was initiated in adolescents with CP, these adolescents were as likely to complete the series (p = 0.400), with 83.3% being up-to-date. In those with CP, there was no statistical difference in status of the HPV immunization series when comparing gender, GMFCS level, or ambulatory status. CONCLUSION Adolescents with CP were less likely to start the HPV immunization series; however, they were as likely to be up-to-date with the series if it was initiated. This presents an opportunity for pediatric physiatrists to help reduce the disparity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High-risk human papillomaviruses (HR HPV) cause nearly all cervical cancers and, in the United States, the majority of head and neck cancers (HNSCCs). NFX1-123 is overexpressed in cervical cancers, and NFX1-123 partners with the HR HPV type 16 E6 oncoprotein to affect multiple growth, differentiation, and immune response genes. However, neither the expression of NFX1-123 nor the levels of these genes have been investigated in HPV positive (HPV+) or negative (HPV-) HNSCCs. METHODS The Cancer Genome Atlas Splicing Variants Database and HNSCC cell lines were used to quantify expression of NFX1-123 and cellular genes increased in cervical cancers. RESULTS NFX1-123 was increased in HPV+ HNSCCs compared to HPV- HNSCCs. LCE1B, KRT16, SPRR2G, and FBN2 were highly expressed in HNSCCs compared to normal tissues. Notch1 and CCNB1IP1 had greater expression in HPV+ HNSCCs compared to HPV- HNSCCs. CONCLUSION NFX1-123 and a subset of its known targets were increased in HPV+ HNSCCs.

Abstract
The incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cancers, especially those from the head and neck region, has increased. The relatively early age of presentation of HPV-positive head and neck cancer (HNC) indicates that viral infection might be acquired early in life. Persistent HPV infection has been recognized as the main risk factor for cancer development, but most studies have focused on evaluating HPV persistence in the genital region. Thus, in this work, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence of HPV in oral cavity and oropharynx in a young population, as well as the possible persistence of the infection after 12 months. Our results indicate that almost half (46.8%) of the analyzed population harbors an HPV infection either in the oral cavity or in the oropharynx. Furthermore, after 1 year of initial identification, half of them eliminated the infection, and only one person (5.26%) exhibited persistence. Interestingly, 50% of the individuals who successfully eliminated the infection acquired a new viral type, indicating that even when the primary infection is effectively eliminated by the immune system, there is a dynamic circulation of HR-HPV types that produce reinfection. This dynamic HPV infection among young individuals could influence the future establishment of cancer in some proportion of the cases.

Abstract
Oral infection by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) has recently gained great attention because of its involvement in the development of a subset of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The role of specific Alpha-HPVs in this regard has been well established, whereas the contribution of other genera is under investigation. Despite their traditional classification as “cutaneous” types, Beta and Gamma HPVs are frequently detected in oral samples. Due to the lack of a standardized protocol, a large variety of methodologies have been used for oral sample collection, DNA extraction, HPV detection and genotyping. Laboratory procedures influence the evaluation of oral HPV prevalence, which largely varies also according to the population characteristics, e.g., age, gender, sexual behavior, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) status. Nevertheless, oral infection by Beta and Gamma HPVs seems to be even more common than Alpha-HPVs. The latter is 5–7% in the general population, and increases up to 30% approximately in HIV-infected men who have sex with men. Despite major advances in the evaluation of oral HPV prevalence, its natural history is still little understood, especially for Beta and Gamma HPVs. The latest technologies, such as Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), can be exploited to gain new insights into oral HPV, and to improve the identification of novel HPV types.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive oropharyngeal cancers (OPC) are increasing due to infection with the virus. Most of the patients diagnosed with HPV-positive OPC are white men with numerous lifetime sexual partners who have smoked marijuana excessively. In working up the patient, it is important to obtain an extensive history and physical examination and obtain proper imaging. Once a full workup is done, it is crucial to engage a multidisciplinary team in treatment and continue following-up with the patient through posttreatment surveillance. Administering the HPV vaccine at a young age may help reduce the increasing rate of HPV-positive OPC in the future.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the world and had been linked to both anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers. It causes nearly 100% of cervical cancers and an increasing portion of oropharyngeal cancers. The geographical burden of cervical HPV infection and associated cancers is not uniform and is mainly found in low middle income countries in South America, Africa, and Asia. However, HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer is rapidly becoming more prevalent in high middle income countries. With the development of vaccines which prevent HPV infection, the World Health Organization has designated the extirpation of HPV and its associated cancers a priority. Countries that have implemented adequate vaccine programs have shown a decrease in HPV prevalence. Understanding the epidemiology of HPV and its associated cancers is fundamental in improving vaccine programs and other health programs.

Abstract
Lichen planus (LP) is a chronic inflammatory mucocutaneous disease. The disease has a cell-mediated immune reaction which is precipitated by a specific trigger which turns the self-peptides antigenic. The role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the malignant transformation of oral LP (OLP) has always been debated. Establishing a definitive part played by HPV in the malignant transformation of OLP, would possibly provide screening for the viruses, HPV vaccination, and antiviral therapy along with conventional treatment in LP which could improve prognosis. This systematic review is to assess the role of HPV in the malignant transformation of OLP. We performed a systematic search of PubMed, MEDLINE, and Google. The information was extracted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. All full-text papers that assessed the association of HPV in malignant transformation of OLP were considered eligible. The outcome parameter included the malignant transformation of OLP. We found a total of 19 studies from which five were found suitable for the review. Results from this systematic review showed HPV is associated with OLP. There is an increased prevalence of HPV in the erosive-atrophic (EA) variant of OLP compared to non-EA variant. There seems to be no strong evidence to prove the association between HPV and malignant transformation of OLP. Taking up the oncogenic potential of high-risk types and OLP as a potentially malignant disorder, more number of studies need to be performed on the dysplastic subtype of OLP and in those OLP lesions that progress to oral squamous cell carcinomas.

Abstract
Oral human papillomavirus (HPV) is associated with increasing rates of HPV-associated oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) in men. Sequential infection from one site to another has been demonstrated at the cervix and anus. Thus, risk of an oral HPV infection after a genital infection of the same type in the HPV infection in men study was investigated. Samples from 3140 men enrolled in a longitudinal cohort were assessed for sequential genital to oral infection with one of nine HPV types (HPV 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58); and then also sequential, same-type oral to genital infection. Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) compared rates of oral HPV among men with and without prior genital infection of the same type. Risk of sequential HPV infections were assessed using Cox proportional hazards model. Incidence of an oral HPV infection was significantly higher among men with a prior genital infection of the same type for any of the 9 HPV types (IRR: 2.3; 95% CI: 1.7-3.0). Hazard ratio of a sequential genital to oral HPV infection was 2.3 (95% CI: 1.7-3.1) and 3.5 (95% CI: 1.9-6.4) for oral to genital infection. Both changed minimally after adjustment for age, country, circumcision, alcohol use, lifetime sexual partners and recent oral sex partners. HPV infections at one site could elevate risk of a subsequent genital or oral HPV infection of the same type in men, emphasizing the importance of vaccination to prevent all HPV infections.

Abstract
Mucosal Human Papillomaviruses (HPVs) play a role in the development of a subset of head and neck cancers. Cutaneous HPVs are abundantly present in the oral cavity. The determinants of these infections have not been extensively investigated. We assessed the correlates of oral infection by alpha and beta and/or gamma HPVs in HIV-infected and uninfected men who have sex with men (MSM). Oral rinse-and-gargles were collected with a mouthwash. Alpha and beta/gamma HPVs were detected using the Linear Array HPV genotyping test and a multiplex PCR combined with Luminex technology, respectively. Multiple logistic regression was performed to identify independent predictors of oral HPV infection. Overall, 193 HIV-uninfected and 117 HIV-infected MSM were enrolled. Among HIV-infected MSM, the only determinant of alpha HPV infection was the number of lifetime oral sex partners (AOR: 8.26, 95% CI: 2.26-30.16). The strongest determinant of beta/gamma HPV infection was represented by practicing condomless receptive oral sex (AOR: 10.76, 95% CI: 1.56-74.17). Age was independently associated with alpha HPV infection in HIV-uninfected MSM. Beta/gamma HPV infection was not associated with sexual behavior in these subjects. In conclusion, predictors of oral infection differ between HIV-infected and uninfected MSM, as well as between alpha and beta/gamma HPVs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to report the national prevalence of oral HPV infection among unvaccinated women and men aged 16-25 years who utilized the public primary care services. METHODS POP-Brazil is a cross-sectional, multicentric, nationwide survey conducted between September 2016 and November 2017. Recruitment was based in 119 public primary care practices in 26 state capitals and the Federal District of Brazil. Trained health professionals conducted face-to-face interviews. Oral samples were collected with mouthwash and gargle cycles. Genotyping was performed using the Roche PCR-based linear array genotyping test. Sampling weights by sex and age were applied. RESULTS Valid oral HPV samples were collected from 5071 (96.88%) participants; 4005 women and 1066 men. Mean participant age was 21.63 years. Overall HPV prevalence was 1.69% (n = 73, 95% CI 1.05-2.32). Thirty individuals presented at least one high-risk HPV type [0.57% (95% CI, 0.29-0.85)]. There were no associations between age, sex, sociodemographic characteristics, drug use or sexual behavior and oral HPV prevalence. CONCLUSION The prevalence of oral HPV infection in Brazilian teenagers and young adults is low, with no sociodemographic or behavioral correlates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oropharyngeal cancer is an important public health problem. The aim of our study was to correlatep16 immunohistochemistry in oropharynx squamous cell carcinomas(OPSCC) with clinical and epidemiological features. MATERIAL AND METHODS We conducted across-sectional study on patients with OPSCC treated at a single institution from 2014 to 2019. Epidemiological and clinical-pathological data were collected from medical records and a questionnaire was applied to determine alcohol consumption, smoking, and sexual behavior. The HPV status was determined by p16 immunohistochemistry. RESULTS A total of 252 patients participated in the study, of these 221 (87.7%) were male. There were 81 (32.14%) p16 positive cases and 171 (67.85%) p16 negative cases. The p16positive group was significantly associated with younger patients (50-59 years), higher education level, lower clinical stage and patients who never drank or smoked. Through univariate logistic regression, we observed that female sex (OR, 3.47; 95% CI, 1.60-7.51) and higher education level (OR, 9.39; 95% CI, 2, 81-31,38) were significantly more likely to be p16 positive. Early clinical stage (AJCC8ed) was more associated with p16 positivity both in univariate (OR, 0.14; 95% CI, 0.07-0.26, p<0.001) and multivariate analysis (OR, 0.18; 95% CI, 0.06-0.49, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION This study showed that drinkers and current smokers were less likely to be p16+. Female sex, higher education level and younger age at diagnosis were associated with a higher probability of being p16+. Additionally, there was a higher proportion of patients with early clinical stage (I or II) in the p16 positive group when compared to the p16 negative group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) is the most common oral cancer with the highest human papillomavirus (HPV) infection rate in oral cancer. The purpose of this study was to research the correlation between HPV and TSCC. METHOD Plasmid pEGFP/HPV16 E6E7 and plasmid pEGFP/no HPV16 E6E7 were constructed. TSCC cell lines SCC9 and SCC15 were infected by liposome transfection and would be highly selected by antibiotic. Fluorescence imaging, PCR, and Western blot were used to detect the expression of HPV16 E6E7 in cells. The biological characteristics were detected by CCK-8, wound healing assay, qRT-PCR, and Western blot. RESULT TSCC cell lines transfected with HPV16 E6E7 gene were successfully established and identified. And the proliferation and migration ability of the TSCC cell lines infected with HPV16 E6E7 gene were significantly stronger than that of the blank group. CONCLUSION TSCC cell lines infected with HPV16 E6E7 with significantly higher ability of proliferation and migration were more malignant than those not infected with HPV16 E6E7.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes oral warts and oropharyngeal cancer (OPC). Human papillomavirus-attributable OPC incidence among men is significantly increasing worldwide, yet few studies have reported oral HPV across multiple countries or examined factors associated with low- and high-risk HPV separately. METHODS Oral gargles from 3095 men in the multinational HPV Infection in Men (HIM) Study were HPV genotyped. Multivariable models assessed factors independently associated with high-risk and low-risk HPV prevalence. RESULTS The prevalence of high-risk and low-risk HPV was 6.0% and 2.8%, respectively. Greater number of sexual partners was only associated with high-risk HPV (1.88; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.22-2.90) prevalence. In multivariable models, residing in Mexico (1.66; 95% CI, 1.15-2.40) and smoking (1.66; 95% CI, 1.13-2.44) were significantly associated with high-risk HPV, and history of consistent gum bleeding (2.16; 95% CI, 1.35-3.45) was significantly associated with low-risk HPV. Gender of the sexual partner did not alter the results for either high- or low-risk HPV endpoints. CONCLUSIONS Different factors were independently associated with high- and low-risk oral HPV. Oral sexual behaviors were associated with high-risk HPV, and oral health was associated with low-risk HPV. High-risk HPV prevalence differed by country of residence, highlighting the need for additional studies in multiple countries.

Abstract
This review focuses on the importance of oral and laryngeal HPV infection which is present in majority of sexually active individuals at least once in their lifetime. Despite testing, still little is known about prevalence rates, determinants and, especially, the concurrent HPV infection in head and neck, and genitals. The purpose of this review is to clarify some issues of oral HPV incidence, prevalence, and to demonstrate the difficulties in identification of asymptomatic oral HPV carriers. The main premise to take up this topic is the high and still increasing risk for development of oropharyngeal cancer, and potential benefit from screening strategies, education programs and HPV vaccination. Transmission of HPV to the oral cavity and oropharynx is hypothesized to occur mainly through sexual contact. The exposure of oropharyngeal mucosa to HPV infection with consequence of increased risk for oropharyngeal carcinoma depends on specific sexual behavior. Male gender, older age, race or ethnicity, oral hygiene and current cigarette smoking are independently associated with any prevalent oral HPV infection.
