Abstract
BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection has been implicated in both gastric and extra-gastric diseases, including periodontitis. METHODS This meta-analysis investigated the association between Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection and periodontitis by systematically reviewing eight studies. The analysis was conducted using the R package "meta," employing both fixed effects and random effects models. The level of heterogeneity among the studies was assessed using the I-squared statistic and tau values. Publication bias was evaluated through funnel plots, Begg's rank correlation, and Egger's regression tests to ensure the robustness of the findings. RESULTS The meta-analysis included a total of 6061 observations, with 1404 cases of periodontitis. The fixed effects model produced an odds ratio (OR) of 2.3392 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.0207-2.7078), and the random effects model yielded a similar OR of 2.3220 (95% CI: 2.0050-2.6892). The I-squared statistic indicated low to moderate heterogeneity among the studies. Subgroup analyses demonstrated consistent associations across different Hp diagnostic methods. CONCLUSION Hp infection is significantly associated with an increased risk of periodontitis, highlighting its role in both gastric and oral health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review and meta-analysis (SRMA) aimed to determine whether the presence of H. pylori in dental plaque is associated with gastric H. pylori infection. DESIGN Search for the relevant literature was done in various databases: PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane till September 21, 2023. The studies were screened for outcome of interest i.e. gastric H. pylori infection and exposure of interest i.e. H. pylori positivity in dental plaque. The pooled results of the study outcomes were evaluated using Odds Ratio (OR), accompanied by a 95 % confidence interval (CI). To evaluate the heterogeneity among studies, I2 statistics were utilized, with an I2 exceeding 50 % indicating a significant to high variation. In cases where I2 was greater than 50 %, a random-effects model (specifically, the Der Simonian and Laird method) was employed. RESULTS Data from 27 observational studies and 2408 participants were included. The pooled OR of the H. pylori positivity in dental plaque among the patients with H. pylori positivity in stomach was 3.80 (95 % CI 2.24; 6.43), with high heterogeneity (I2= 69 %, p<0.01). Sensitivity analysis after removing the outliers reduced the heterogeneity significantly (I2=22 %, p=0.16). Meta-regression revealed that the strength of association did not vary according to the year of study or the sample size included in the studies. Overall certainty of the evidence was low. CONCLUSIONS The present meta-analysis showed that the presence of gastric H. pylori infection was higher among patients with H. pylori in dental plaque compared to patients without H. pylori in dental plaque. Presence of H. pylori infection in dental plaque can have implications in the management of H. pylori infection as dental plaque can serve as a reservoir from which the microorganism can recolonize the gastric mucosa.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Helicobacter pylori is known for colonizing the gastric mucosa and instigating severe upper gastrointestinal diseases such as gastritis, gastroduodenal ulcers, and gastric cancer. To date, there is no data available on the oral cavity as transmission site, whether H. pylori can survive in the oral cavity or in human saliva. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of oral microorganisms and human saliva on the survival of H. pylori in human saliva. METHODS H. pylori strains KE, a motile derivate of type strain H. pylori 26695, and H. pylori SS1, a clinical isolate from a gastric biopsy, were grown in human pooled saliva (pooled from 4 healthy human donors, 0.22 μm filter-sterilized) or in BBF (Brucella browth formula; control) either as mono-cultures or in co-culture with Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus oralis, Actinomyces naeslundii, Lacticaseibacillus casei and Candida dubliniensis. Bacterial survival of H. pylori and the oral microorganisms were investigated using colony forming units (CFU) assay and MALDI-TOF MS at baseline and after 24, 48 and 168 h. RESULTS In saliva, H. pylori KE demonstrated enhanced survival in co-culture with S. mutans, A. naeslundii, and C. dubliniensis, enduring for at least 48 h. In contrast, L. casei and S. oralis inhibited H. pylori KE in saliva. H. pylori KE could not be cultured after 168 h in saliva, neither in mono- nor co-culture. In contrast, H. pylori SS1 in saliva could be cultured after 168 h in co-culture with S. mutans and C. dubliniensis, but not in mono-culture. In BBF, H. pylori KE could be cultured after 168 h with S. mutans, L. casei and C. dubliniensis, and H. pylori SS1 with L. casei and C. dubliniensis, but not with S. mutans. Notably, the co-cultured microorganisms survived at high CFU numbers similar to those of the monocultures. CONCLUSION The study suggests that H. pylori can transiently survive in human saliva and even with presence of certain oral microorganisms. However, it may not be a permanent resident of the oral microbiota. The co-survival with oral microorganisms emphasizes the necessity for studying the role of the oral microbiota in the infectious and transmission cycle of H. pylori.

Abstract
It has long been considered that the oral microbiome is tightly connected to oral health and that dysbiotic changes can be detrimental to the occurrence and progression of dysplastic oral mucosal lesions or oral cancer. Improved understanding of the concepts of microbial dysbiosis together with advances in high-throughput molecular sequencing of these pathologies have charted in greater microbiological detail the nature of their clinical state. This review discusses the bacteriome and mycobiome associated with oral mucosal lesions, oral candidiasis, and oral squamous cell carcinoma, aiming to delineate the information available to date in pursuit of advancing diagnostic and prognostic utilities for oral medicine.

Abstract
Background To explore the causal association between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection, herpesvirus infection and periodontitis (PD) from a genetic perspective using Mendelian randomization (MR). Methods The PD data were derived from genome-wide association study (GWAS) from the Dental Endpoints (GLIDE) consortium, and the FinnGen Biobank provided data on H. pylori and herpesvirus infections. In addition, we examined GWAS data for subtypes of H. pylori and herpesvirus infection. Inverse variance weighting (IVW) was selected as a major analysis technique, and weighted median (WM), weighted model, simple model, and MR-Egger regression were added as supplementary methods. To verify the findings, the effects of pleiotropy and heterogeneity were assessed. Results Genetically predicted H. pylori infection (OR = 0.914, 95%CI = 0.693-1.205, P = 0.523), anti-H. pylori VacA (OR = 0.973, 95%CI = 0.895-1.057, P = 0.515), anti-H. pylori CagA (OR = 1.072, 95%CI = 0.986-1.164; P = 0.102), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection (OR = 1.026, 95%CI = 0.940-1.120, P = 0.567), Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection (OR = 0.962, 95%CI = 0.883-1.048, P = 0.372), cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection (OR = 1.025, 95%CI = 0.967-1.088, P = 0.415), EBV nuclear antigen-1 (EBNA1) (OR = 1.061, 95%CI = 0.930-1.209, P = 0.378), EBV virus capsid antigen (VCA) (OR = 1.043, 95CI% = 0.890-1.222, P = 0.603), HSV-1 (OR = 1.251, 95%CI = 0.782-2.001, P = 0.351), HSV-2 (OR = 1.020, 95%CI = 0.950-1.096, P = 0.585), CMV IgG (OR = 0.990, 95CI% = 0.882-1.111, P = 0.861) were not associated with PD, indicated that H. pylori and herpesvirus infection had no causal relationship to PD. Reverse studies also found no cause effect of PD on H. pylori or herpesvirus infection. The results of the sensitivity analysis suggested the robustness of the MR results. Conclusion This study offered preliminary proof that H. pylori and herpesvirus infections were not causally linked to PD, and vice versa. However, more robust instrumental variables (IVs) and larger samples of GWAS data were necessary for further MR analysis.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Various studies have examined the association between periodontitis and helicobacter pylori and reported conflicting results. The aimed of this systematic review and meta-analysis estimating the association between these two variables. METHODS Electronic databases including PubMed (Medline), Scopus, Web of Sciences and Medline (Elsevier) were searched using the relevant keywords. All observational studies comparing the association between periodontitis and helicobacter pylori were considered. The Newcastle - Ottawa Quality Assessment Scale (NOS) checklist was used for assessing quality of included studies. All statistical analyses were completed using STATA (Version 16). RESULTS Twenty-three studies with 8,638 patients (15 case-control with 2,366 patients and 8 cross-sectional with 6,272 patients) were included in this meta-analysis. After combining the selected studies, the odds of presence the Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with the periodontal disease was 2.47 (OR: 2.47; 95% CI: 2.01, 3.03; I2: 50.87%; P: 0.001). Also, the odds after combining case-control studies was 2.77 (OR: 2.77; % 95 CI: 2.11, 3.66; I2: 37.16%; P: 0.049) and after combining cross-sectional analytical ones, it was equal to 2.07 (OR: 2.07; 95% CI: 1.62, 2.65; I2: 43.25%; P: 0.050). CONCLUSION Based on the results of this meta-analysis, the association between Helicobacter pylori infection and the periodontal disease is evident.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), a gram-negative bacterium that colonizes the stomach, can cause chronic gastritis and peptic ulcers, as well as gastric cancer as a Class I carcinogen. However, the modes of H. pylori transmission are not clear. This review aims to clarify the transmission routes and patterns of H. pylori and identify efficacious prevention measures. METHODS Studies of H. pylori transmission were identified using PubMed, the Web of Science, and Cochrane Central; the retrieval deadline was October 2022. RESULTS The transmission routes of H. pylori are discussed, focusing on the five primary transmission routes, namely fecal-oral, oral-oral, gastric-oral, anal-oral, and genital-oral. We propose that H. pylori is contracted through multiple transmission routes. Additionally, we summarize the key transmission patterns of H. pylori, including person-to-person and animal-to-human transmission, as well as foodborne and occupational exposure. CONCLUSION Fecal-oral appears to be the most common H. pylori transmission routes. Although the oral-oral pathway is also important, the evidence does not support that this route of transmission is universal. The gastric-oral route occurs primarily in children and patients who are prone to vomiting. Meanwhile, the anal-oral and genital-oral routes remain hypothetical. Person-to-person and foodborne infections represent the predominant transmission patterns of H. pylori, whereas strong environmental and occupational limitations are associated with animal-to-human and occupational exposure.

Abstract
Background Periodontitis and coronavirus disease (COVID-19) both exhibit an exaggerated inflammatory response as common traits. Given that periodontal diseases have been linked to respiratory illnesses like pneumonia, it is quite possible that periodontitis and COVID-19 are related. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to ascertain whether the severity of COVID-19 and periodontal disease are related. Methods A retrospective study was done using the 3 years of patients' medical and dental records in the University Hospital. A telephone interview was employed to estimate the severity of symptoms got through COVID-19 infection. The data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis. The Chi-square test, with statistical significance set at 0.05, was used to determine the relationship between the severity of periodontal disease and the severity of COVID-19. Results It was seen that there was a strong relationship between the severities of COVID-19 disease and periodontal disease. The mildest gingivitis cases (63%), Stage 1 periodontitis (62.9%), were associated with the COVID-19-negative group, whereas the most severe gingivitis cases (85.7%), Stage 4 periodontitis group (66.66%), were associated with COVID-19-positive group. In comparison to those without periodontitis, patients with periodontitis had a 1.54 times higher risk of COVID-19 complications (P = 0.048). Patients who had comorbidities were 2.49 times to have COVID-19 complications (P = 0.02). Conclusion The observations presented above lead to the conclusion that COVID-19 and periodontal disease severities are related. Understanding the potential association between periodontitis and COVID-19 through systemic inflammation could be a means of achieving a high-quality medical care. To validate the findings, additional research with larger samples is required.

Abstract
Background Porphyromonas gingivalis is part of the subgingival biofilm and a keystone species in the development of periodontitis. Interactions between P.gingivalis and other bacteria in biofilms have been shown to affect bacterial virulence. Helicobacter pylori also inhabits the subgingival biofilm, but the consequences of interactions there with P.gingivalis remain unknown. Here, we investigated how the pre-incubation of P.gingivalis with H.pylori affects P.gingivalis virulence. Methods We assayed P.gingivalis internalization by oral keratinocytes (OKs), hemagglutination and biofilm formation to identify alterations in virulence after pre-incubation with H. pylori. Also, we evaluated viability and migration of OKs infected with P. gingivalis, as well as the role of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). In addition, we quantified the mRNA of genes associated with P.gingivalis virulence. Results Pre-incubation of P.gingivalis with H.pylori enhanced P.gingivalis biofilm formation, bacterial internalization into OKs and hemagglutination. Infection with pre-incubated P.gingivalis increased OK migration in a manner dependent on the O-antigen and linked to increased expression of the gingipain RgpB. Also, OK TLR4 participates in these events, because upon TLR4 knock-down, pre-incubated P.gingivalis no longer stimulated OK migration. Discussion We provide here for the first time insight to the consequences of direct interaction between P.gingivalis and H.pylori. In doing so, we shed light on the mechanism by which H. pylori presence in the oral cavity increases the severity or progression of periodontitis.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and periodontitis are both inflammatory conditions associated with systemic diseases. Researchers have attempted to investigate the correlation between them. This systematic review and meta-analyses were conducted to investigate the association of H. pylori infection in the stomach and/or in subgingival plaque and gingival crevicular fluid with chronic periodontitis. The protocol was created according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic review and Meta-Analysis Protocols (PRISMA-P) statement. The study was designed according to the Cochrane criteria. A comprehensive literature search was performed in MEDLINE, Scopus, and CENTRAL, combined with hand-searching and assessment of gray literature. The meta-analysis of the included studies was made by the Review Manager (RevMan) 5.4 software. The effect measure of the outcome was odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals. Heterogeneity was assessed by chi-square and I2. Four observational studies involving 818 subjects were included in this meta-analysis. The odds of oral H. pylori presence were higher in patients with chronic periodontitis, compared to healthy controls, with an odds ratio of 1.87 (95% confidence interval 0.85–4.10; p = 0.12). The odds of the presence of H. pylori in the stomach also were higher in patients with chronic periodontitis, with an odds ratio of 1.80 (95% confidence interval 0.82–3.95; p = 0.15). There is no evidence for an association between chronic periodontitis and the prevalence of H. pylori, detected either in subgingival plaque and gingival crevicular fluid or in the stomach.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is transmitted primarily through the oral–oral route and fecal–oral route. The oral cavity had therefore been hypothesized as an extragastric reservoir of H. pylori, owing to the presence of H. pylori DNA and particular antigens in distinct niches of the oral cavity. This bacterium in the oral cavity may contribute to the progression of periodontitis and is associated with a variety of oral diseases, gastric eradication failure, and reinfection. However, the conditions in the oral cavity do not appear to be ideal for H. pylori survival, and little is known about its biological function in the oral cavity. It is critical to clarify the survival strategies of H. pylori to better comprehend the role and function of this bacterium in the oral cavity. In this review, we attempt to analyze the evidence indicating the existence of living oral H. pylori, as well as potential survival strategies, including the formation of a favorable microenvironment, the interaction between H. pylori and oral microorganisms, and the transition to a non-growing state. Further research on oral H. pylori is necessary to develop improved therapies for the prevention and treatment of H. pylori infection.

Abstract
In the human body, each microbial habitat exhibits a different microbial population pattern, and these distinctive microflorae are highly related to the development of diseases. The microbial interactions from host different niches are becoming crucial regulators to shape the microbiota and their physiological or pathological functions. The oral cavity and gut are the most complex and interdependent microbial habitats. Helicobacter pylori is one of the most important pathogens from digestive tract, especially the stomach, due to its direct relationships with many gastric diseases including gastric cancer. H. pylori infections can destroy the normal gastric environment and make the stomach a livable channel to enhance the microbial interactions between oral cavity and gut, thus reshaping the oral and gut microbiomes. H. pylori can be also detected in the oral and gut, while the interaction between the oral-gut axis microbiota and H. pylori plays a major role in H. pylori’s colonization, infection, and pathogenicity. Both the infection and eradication of H. pylori and its interaction with oral-gut axis microbiota can alter the balance of the microecology of the oral-gut axis, which can affect the occurrence and progress of related diseases. The shift of oral-gut axis microbiota and their interactions with H. pylori maybe potential targets for H. pylori infectious diagnosis and treatment.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is linked to chronic gastritis, duodenal or gastric ulcers, and gastric cancer (GC). Because the oral cavity is the first component of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and the entrance point for H. pylori, it has been proposed as a possible reservoir of H. pylori. As a result, a putative oral-oral transmission pathway of H. pylori poses the possibility of whether personal contact, such as kissing or sharing a meal, might trigger H. pylori transmission. As a result, several investigations have been done on this issue using various approaches for detecting H. pylori in oral and stomach samples. Furthermore, the relationship between H. pylori and gastrointestinal disorders has yet to be studied. The evidence for the association between H. pylori and gastric diseases and their complications is still a controversial subject due to the existing literature in this review. The goal of this comprehensive review was to collect all available published articles and critically evaluate existing investigations looking into the relationship between oral H. pylori contamination and the danger of gastric complications. Few studies indicated an association between H. pylori and gastric diseases. Furthermore, more longitudinal randomized clinical studies to further investigate the association between H. pylori and gastric diseases are warranted.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) and related oncogenic and virulent proteins (CagA and VacA) in patients with gingivitis, periodontitis, oral cancer and gastric cancer. METHODS Subgingival plaque samples were collected from 90 individuals with either gingivitis/ periodontitis (group A, n=30), oral cancer (group B, n=30) and gastric cancer (group C, n=30). H.pylori was identified by real time- polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The virulent organisms were detected by identification of proteins CagA and VacA through Enzyme Linked Immuno Sorbent Assay (ELISA). RESULTS We identified the presence of H.pylori in subgingival plaque samples among a large majority (76/90) of our study cohort. The proportions of CagA and VacA identified among H.pylori individuals with periodontal inflammation and oral cancer were lower than those diagnosed with gastric cancer. Furthermore, the relative risk of oral cancer based on the presence of the organism was no different to those with gingivitis/periodontitis. CONCLUSION The findings of our study does not indicate significant association between the organism and oral cancer but preludes that the oral cavity could act as a potential niche for H.pylori. The possibility for CagA and VacA proteins to be pathogenic in oral cavity is highly possible and to be researched extensively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy can be considered effective if the result of its implementation is removed including all roots and rootlets from which surviving H. pylori can repopulate in the gastric mucosa. One of the reasons for the ineffectiveness of eradication therapy can be the continuous presence of viable coccoid forms of H. pylori in the oral cavity. Therefore, anti-Helicobacter eradication therapy should be supplemented by the sanitation of the oral cavity. OBJECTIVES The objective of this study is to determine the frequency of occurrence of H. pylori in the gastric mucosa and in the oral cavity in patients with chronic periodontitis or with chronic gastritis using immunocytochemical method and to evaluate the pathophysiological relationship between periodontitis and HP-associated acid-dependent stomach diseases mediated by H. pylori. METHODS A group of patients with chronic gastritis (70 participants, 46 women, 24 men, age: 24 - 55 years) and another group with chronic periodontitis before the start of surgical treatment (61 participants, 30 women, 31 men, age: 20 - 60 years) were examined for НР bacterial cells using immunocytochemical methods of staining gastric biopsy and exfoliate samples from the gingival sulcus surface. The participants did not take any antimicrobial medication before and during the examination. Routine staining was also performed to view microbiota in smears for both groups. The participants signed a voluntary consent agreement to undergo routine medical examinations and join the study at the Nikiforov Russian Centre of Emergency and Radiation Medicine, EMERCOM of Russia, where the ethical committee was made. RESULTS Immunocytochemical method could identify all stages of bacillary-coccoid transformation of H. pylori which accounted for 63.4-67.5% of cases. HP-antigenpositive bacteria were found in the oral cavity in both groups of examined patients. It was apparent that spiral forms of H. pylori were dominant over coccoid forms in the gastric mucosa in the antrum of the stomach, whereas coccoid forms of H. pylori were frequently found more in the oral cavity. Helicobacteriosis in the oral cavity was identified in chronic periodontitis. CONCLUSION We found certain pathogenetic connections between inflammatory lesions of the oral cavity and diseases of the internal organs of the gastrointestinal tract. Accordingly, we suggest the necessity to use proper medication for oral cavity sanitation along with anti-Helicobacter eradication therapy to influence the HP reservoir in the oral cavity and gingival sulcus. Additionally, bacterial cells of HP reside in the oral cavity in coccoid forms; therefore, the coccoid form of HP should become the second principal target in treating HP.

Abstract
Aim In this review, several gastrointestinal diseases that dentists may encounter in practice are highlighted and discussed. Materials and methods Using MEDLINE (PubMed), a comprehensive review of gastrointestinal diseases and their oral cavity manifestations was performed. Results Many gastrointestinal diseases present with oral symptoms that are detectable by dentists and dental hygienists. Often, oral manifestations of the disease may appear before systemic signs and symptoms. Managing patients with these conditions requires dentists to adjust their treatment and/or involve other health professionals. Conclusion Care must be taken when providing periodontal therapy or dental implants to patients suffering gastrointestinal diseases who are at high risk of bleeding, infection, or malnutrition, for example. Also, pharmacological therapy for these patients may need to be customized.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor oral health may be a significant risk factor for gastric cancer (GC); however, previous results are not consistent. Here, we investigated the effect of oral health on GC and effect modification by other factors. METHODS We conducted a population-based case-control study in Taixing, China. Participants aged between 40 and 85 years and who had lived in Taixing for at least 5 years were included. The GC cases were confirmed by endoscopy and pathological diagnosis, and the controls were randomly selected using the frequency-matching method. Unconditional logistic regression models were used to derive odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of oral health for GC risk after adjusting for confounders and risk factors. RESULTS Overall, 901 GC cases and 1972 controls were included. Tooth loss was not significantly associated with an increased risk of GC (yes vs. no, OR = 1.08, 95% CI 0.88 to 1.33). Compared with toothbrushing at least twice per day, toothbrushing once per day or less was associated with an increased risk of GC (OR = 2.39, 95% CI 1.94 to 2.94), and was more pronounced in esophagogastric junction cancer and intestinal-type GC. There was no significant interaction between the indicators of oral health and age, sex, tobacco smoking, alcohol drinking, and Helicobacter pylori seropositivity. CONCLUSION Poor oral hygiene behavior is associated with an increased risk of GC, and this positive association is consistent across all GC subgroups classified by anatomy and histology. Further studies are needed to explore the possible mechanisms behind this association.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and periodontitis share common characteristics, such as an exaggerated inflammatory response. As periodontal diseases were shown to be associated with respiratory diseases, such as pneumonia, it is quite possible that a relationship may exist between periodontitis and COVID-19. Hence, the aim of the present study was to determine whether periodontitis and poor oral hygiene are associated with COVID-19. METHODS A case-control study was conducted. Patients who had positive real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction results for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection were included in the case group (n = 79), and patients with negative results were included in the control group (n = 71). The periodontal examination involved recording the plaque scores, calculus scores, tooth mobility, gingival bleeding, probing depth, recession, and clinical attachment level (CAL). RESULTS Logistic regression analysis showed significant associations of mean plaque scores ≥ 1 (odds ratio (OR), 7.01; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.83 to 26.94), gingivitis (OR, 17.65; 95% CI, 5.95 to 52.37), mean CAL ≥ 2 mm (OR, 8.46; 95% CI, 3.47 to 20.63), and severe periodontitis (OR, 11.75; 95% CI, 3.89 to 35.49) with COVID-19; these findings were more prevalent in the case group. CONCLUSION Based on the above mentioned observations, it can be concluded that there is an association between periodontitis severity and COVID-19. Gingival bleeding and dental plaque accumulation are also more frequent among COVID-19 patients. Hence, it is essential to maintain periodontal health and good oral hygiene as an important measure for COVID-19 prevention and management.

Abstract
Aim: To probe into the possible connection between gastroesophageal reflux disorders (GERDs) and functionally occurring dyspepsia as a factor raising the risk of chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 40 patients with chronic periodontitis with age group between 40–60 years. The test group included 20 people diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), according to the Montreal Definition and Classification agreement, and chronic periodontitis. Symptomatic diagnoses were done to confirm functional dyspepsia. The control group comprised 20 systematically healthy people suffering from chronic periodontitis. Indices measured included flow-rate of saliva, repetitive saliva swallowing test for swallowing function, papillary marginal attachment index of gingiva, oral hygiene index-simplified and decayed, missing, filled teeth index. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 22 (IBM Inc. Chicago, USA). Descriptive statistics, such as mean and standard deviation (SD) for continuous variables and frequency and percentage for categorical variables were determined. T test was performed for intergroup comparison and Pearson correlation test was done for evaluating correlation between various parameters. P ≤ 0.05 considered as significant. Results: Statistically significant differences were observed between the test and control groups with regard to all the clinical parameters of interest. Pearson's correlation test revealed a strong negative correlation between salivary flow rate and OHI-S and DMFT scores. The RSST swallow function values demonstrated a moderate negative correlation with OHI-S scores, while OHI-I scores and DMFT scores were observed to be strongly correlated in a positive direction. A statistically significant difference was present in the probing depth and CAL levels between both the groups with higher levels in test group. Conclusion: GERD was linked to incremental incidences of chronic periodontitis and was established as an independent risk-raising factor.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim was to evaluate the scope and potential ethical concerns related to the use of teledentistry in clinical orthodontics. METHODS Indexed databases were searched up to and including October 2020. The eligibility criteria were as follows: (a) original clinical studies, and (b) case reports/series. Historic reviews, commentaries, experimental studies, and letters to the editor, were excluded. The pattern of the present review was customized to summarize the relevant information. RESULTS A total of 4 clinical studies (out of 1016) were included in the present evidence-based review. Three studies reported that teledentistry is useful in clinical orthodontics. In 1 study, a clear conclusion could not be derived regarding the benefits of teledentistry in clinical orthodontics. Two out of 4 studies did not obtain prior approval from an Institutional Review Board or Ethical Committee. Three studies did not report any measures that were undertaken to safeguard the electronic transfer of patient-related health information. CONCLUSIONS Teleorthodontics facilitates treatment planning/monitoring by sharing orthodontics-based patient records among oral healthcare providers; however, the importance of direct patient supervision and routine follow-ups during orthodontic therapy cannot be overlooked. Further studies are needed to establish ethical guidelines and a standard of care in this emerging field.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the association between periodontal disease and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in oral cavity. MATERIALS AND METHODS We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane library, Gray literature, and clinicaltrials.gov for eligible studies up to September 25, 2019. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. The random-effects model was used with the software STATA 13.0. The Newcastle-Ottawa-Scale was used for quality evaluation. RESULTS Twelve observational studies (eight from Asia, one from Europe, and three from the South America) involving 2727 participants were included in the meta-analysis. The overall pooled results showed that H. pylori infection in oral cavity was associated with periodontal disease (OR 2.53, 95% CI 1.86-3.44, P < 0.05). No significant heterogeneity among the articles was observed (I2 = 44.3%, P < 0.05). The sensitivity analysis indicated that the result of our meta-analysis was generally stable. The Begg test and the Egger test both showed no publication bias was observed (P = 0.45 and P = 0.18 respectively). CONCLUSIONS Based on current available evidence, it seemed there was a correlation between oral H. pylori infection and the occurrence of periodontal disease. However, since most of the data comes from Asia, more large-scale investigations with high quality from all over the world are needed to confirm the association. CLINICAL RELEVANCE H. pylori infection in oral may have a positive association with the prevalence of periodontal disease mainly in Asian populations.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection is an established causative agent for gastric cancer. Although the oral cavity is a part of the gastrointestinal system, the presence and possible causative role of HP in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a subject of controversy. Therefore, the current study aimed to investigate HP infection in two cohorts of OSCC patients with different demographic characteristics, lifestyles and habitual risk factors. A total of 242 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded OSCC specimens from two different patient cohorts (Norway, n = 171 and Nepal, n = 71) were used to examine HP using immunohistochemistry (IHC) and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Two different HP specific genes (23S rRNA and ureA) were used for TaqMan-based qPCR, and for subsequent verification using HP specific RIDAGENE HP kit and SYBR Green based qPCR. All of the OSCC specimens from both cohorts were found to be negative for HP infection with IHC and qPCR, although the positive control specimens tested positive. Our findings suggest that HP is absent in the examined OSCC cohorts, irrespective of race, lifestyle and habitual risk factors. This indicates that, in contrast to gastric cancer, HP is an unlikely contributing factor for OSCC pathogenesis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim was to assess the effectiveness of mechanical debridement (MD) and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) against oral yeasts in children with gingivitis undergoing fixed orthodontic therapy (FOT). METHODS Individuals undergoing orthodontic treatment were included. Patients were randomly divided into 2-groups. In the test-group, patients underwent MD with adjuvant aPDT; and in the control-group, patients underwent MD alone. Demographic information was recorded using a questionnaire. An ultrasonic scaler was used to perform MD and aPDT was done using methylene blue and visible light. In both groups, gingival index, unstimulated whole salivary flow rate and oral yeasts counts were measured at baseline and compared at 6-months' follow-up. Group comparisons were performed and P < 0.05 was selected as an indicator of statistical significance. RESULTS Eighteen (10 males and 8 females) and 18 individuals (9 males and 9 females) were included in the test- and control groups. The mean age of individuals in the test and control groups were 16.6 ± 0.5 and 16.8 ± 0.4 years, respectively. At 6-months' follow-up, the GI was comparable among patients in the test- and control-group. In the test-group, the CFU/ml of oral yeasts were significantly higher at baseline compared with 6-months' follow-up (P < 0.05). In the control-group, there was no statistically significant difference in the CFU/ml of oral yeasts at baseline and 6-months' follow-up. CONCLUSION aPDT is a useful adjuvant to MD in reducing whole salivary oral yeasts counts among adolescents undergoing orthodontic treatment. In the sort-term, MD with and without aPDT is useful in reducing GI in adolescents undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is well-known for its role in chronic gastritis and gastric cancer. Eradication of these carcinogenic bacteria from the gut is one of the challenges for clinicians. The complexity of treatment mainly owes to antibiotic resistance and relapse due to an additional reservoir in the oral cavity. Our study emphases the isolation of H. pylori from distinct habitats of the gut microenvironment (gastric biopsy and gastric juice) and its subsequent characterization. We have also evaluated the effect of various oral rinses on isolated H. pylori from different anatomical locations of included subjects. RESULTS The possible strains isolated from two different habitats of the same subject shows a striking difference in their growth pattern. Promisingly, some of the included oral rinses are efficient in growth inhibition as per recommended 30 s treatment. The subsequent evaluation shows that oral rinse B (among A-E) is most effective and down-regulates the expression of one of the potent H. pylori gene, CagA, in the infected gastric adenocarcinoma (AGS) cells. CONCLUSION Our study, for the first time, revealed that H. pylori, isolated from the different habitat of the same subject, show a different growth pattern. The expression of H. pylori pathogenic gene (CagA) was down-regulated by the use of oral rinses. Hence, oral rinses will reduce the H. pylori in the oral cavity and help to control its migration from oral to the gastric compartment and may be used as an adjuvant treatment option for its re-infection.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) is known as one of the most common infectious pathogens, with high infection and recurrence rates worldwide. The prevalence of H pylori is up to 90% in developing countries, while the annual recurrence rate is much higher than that in developed countries. Recurrence can occur either by recrudescence or reinfection. Compared with reinfection, the time window for recrudescence is generally shorter, followed by the recurrence of H pylori–associated diseases in the short‐term. Many factors are involved in the H pylori reinfection, such as the prevalence of H pylori infection, living conditions and economic development, health conditions and so forth. Previous studies focused less on H pylori recrudescence. Therefore, the influencing factors for H pylori recrudescence needed further exploration. This study reviewed the recrudescence of H pylori infection and its influencing factors.

Abstract
According to the TURHEP study, the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in Turkey is 82.5%. After FDA approval in 1995, many countries have used standard triple therapy (proton pump inhibitor 40 mg b.i.d clarithromycin 500 mg b.i.d and amoxicillin 1 gr b.i.d) for Helicobacter pylori treatment. In the beginning, eradication rates were above 90% in many countries; however, current studies have demonstrated a prominent decrease in successful treatment rates, even down to 60%. This unfavorable reduction stimulated searches for new treatment protocols. Treatment protocols differ according to country, prevalence, cost-effectiveness, antibiotic resistance, CYP2C19 polymorphism and eradication rates. Thus, each country/region needs to revise its own therapeutic results and the efficacy of various eradication regimens in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori. This report aims to review the current status of Helicobacter pylori treatment in Turkey and to provide recommendations for rational therapeutic considerations for the eradication of the bacterium.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this meta-analysis is to evaluate the association between the presence of Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) and periodontal disease (PD). METHODS PubMed and EMBASE databases were searched to identify eligible articles published from inception up to April 2018. Further articles were retrieved through a manual search of recent reviews. Cross-sectional studies, case-control studies and cohort studies reporting the association between H pylori and PD were included. The pooled odds ratio (OR) and their 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. RESULTS Four case-control studies and nine cross-sectional studies were included. A total of 6800 patients were included in this review. The odds for oral H pylori positivity was 2.31 times (95% CI: 1.99-2.68) greater than those without H pylori. Subgroup analyses involving different study locations, designs, and types of study population showed the similar results. The pooled OR for the gastric disease patients was the largest (3.50, 95% CI: 2.22-5.53, five articles). Stomach H pylori was also significantly associated with PD, with OR 2.90 (95% CI: 1.37-6.14, two articles). CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis supports an association between H pylori and PD. More well-designed studies, especially prospective cohort studies are necessary to confirm these results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to evaluate the effects of periodontal therapy on the efficacy of Helicobacter pylori eradication and on the recurrence of infection after eradication. METHODS We conducted a prospective randomized trial on 698 gastric H. pylori-infected patients, of whom 347 received gastric H. pylori treatment alone and 342 received gastric H. pylori treatment plus periodontal therapy. The presence of H. pylori and associated virulence genes were detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS After eradication of gastric H. pylori infection, the recurrence of gastric H. pylori was significantly lower in the gastric H. pylori treatment plus periodontal therapy group than in the group receiving gastric H. pylori treatment alone (OR 0.67; 95% CI 0.45 to 0.99), whereas the eradication rate was not significantly different (OR 0.87; 95% CI 0.68 to 0.98). There was a close relationship between the presence of H. pylori in saliva and its presence in the stomach. CONCLUSIONS The oral cavity is an important reservoir for gastric H. pylori infection. Adjunctive periodontal therapy could enhance the efficiency of H. pylori treatment and reduce the recurrence of gastric H. pylori infection.

Abstract
AIM This study was aimed to identify the presence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) genes in oral mucosa and find out their relationship between oral H. pylori infection and gastric complications. METHODS This study is a case control study consists of 567 subjects with periodontal infection (278 gastric complication cases and 289 controls normal gastric intestinal mucosa) with age range of 20-80 years. Oral health status was recorded by calculating oral hygiene index (OHI), probing depths (PD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL). Each participant provided gastric biopsy and plaque samples which were subjected to H. pylori detection. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with different primers specifically β globulin, 16SrRNA, babA, cagA, ureA, ureC and vacA gene was performed which were then analyzed using gel electrophoresis. RESULTS No significant differences (χ2 = 11.873, p value > 0.05) were observed between oral H. pylori and gastric infections/complications. However, H. pylori increase the risk of developing gastro-esophageal reflux grade II (OR = 1.458, 95%CI = 0.659-3.226), normal upper GIT mucosa with lax esophageal sphincters (OR = 1.215, 95%CI = 0.285-5.181) and duodenal ulcer/duodenitis (OR = 2.187, 95%CI = 0.225-21.278). This study also showed a significant increased risk of gastritis with babA gene. CONCLUSION Oral pathogenic H. pylori genes may enhance the severity of the gastric infection.

Abstract
Previous studies have suggested that peptic ulcer disease (PUD) including stomach and duodenal ulcers might be associated with periodontitis (PD); however, no clear conclusions have been reached thus far. In this retrospective case-control study, we aimed to investigate the association between PUD and PD by using a large population-based dataset in Taiwan. A population-based retrospective case control study was conducted using the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2010 (LHID2010) derived from the National Health Insurance Research database (NHIRD) in Taiwan from 2000 to 2013. The case and control group were matched with gender, age, urbanization level, socioeconomic status, and Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) by using the propensity score method at a 1:1 ratio. A total of 177,240 cases and 177,240 control patients were included in this study, with an average age of 46.96 ± 11.76 years. The risk of PUD for patients diagnosed with PD was 1.15-fold when compared with those without PD (OR, 1.15; 95% CI, 1.12–1.18). This population-based case control study demonstrated a significantly positive association between PUD and PD in Taiwan.

Abstract
Purpose This study investigated the validity of the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) as a predictor of periodontal disease (PD) over a 12-year period. Methods Nationwide representative samples of 149,785 adults aged ≥60 years with PD (International Classification of Disease, 10th revision [ICD-10], K052-K056) were derived from the National Health Insurance Service-Elderly Cohort during 2002-2013. The degree of comorbidity was measured using the CCI (grade 0-6), including 17 diseases weighted on the basis of their association with mortality, and data were analyzed using multivariate Cox proportional-hazards regression in order to investigate the associations of comorbid diseases (CDs) with PD. Results The multivariate Cox regression analysis with adjustment for sociodemographic factors (sex, age, household income, insurance status, residence area, and health status) and CDs (acute myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, cerebral vascular accident, dementia, pulmonary disease, connective tissue disorders, peptic ulcer, liver disease, diabetes, diabetes complications, paraplegia, renal disease, cancer, metastatic cancer, severe liver disease, and human immunodeficiency virus [HIV]) showed that the CCI in elderly comorbid participants was significantly and positively correlated with the presence of PD (grade 1: hazard ratio [HR], 1.11; P<0.001; grade ≥2: HR, 1.12, P<0.001). Conclusions We demonstrated that a higher CCI was a significant predictor of greater risk for PD in the South Korean elderly population.

Abstract
The oral microbiome is diverse in its composition due to continuous contact of oral cavity with the external environment. Temperatures, diet, pH, feeding habits are important factors that contribute in the establishment of oral microbiome. Both culture dependent and culture independent approaches have been employed in the analysis of oral microbiome. Gene-based methods like PCR amplification techniques, random amplicon cloning, PCR-RELP, T-RELP, DGGE and DNA microarray analysis have been applied to increase oral microbiome related knowledge. Studies revealed that microbes from the phyla Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, Fusobacteria, Neisseria, TM7 predominately inhabits the oral cavity. Culture-independent molecular techniques revealed the presence of genera Megasphaera, Parvimonas and Desulfobulbus in periodontal disease. Bacteria, fungi and protozoa colonize themselves on various surfaces in oral cavity. Microbial biofilms are formed on the buccal mucosa, dorsum of the tongue, tooth surfaces and gingival sulcus. Various studies demonstrate relationship between unbalanced microflora and development of diseases like tooth caries, periodontal diseases, type 2 diabetes, circulatory system related diseases etc. Transcriptome-based remodelling of microbial metabolism in health and disease associated states has been well reported. Human diets and habitat can trigger virus activation and influence phage members of oral microbiome. Abstract
BACKGROUND
Many studies have reported an association between periodontal infections and some systemic diseases such as respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. Some studies found a direct association between chronic gastritis caused by Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection and poor periodontal health.
METHODS
In a cross-sectional study from November 2014 to December 2015 in Kerman, the largest province in southeast Iran, patients with dyspepsia who were candidate for diagnostic upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy were included in our study. Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index and Loe plaque index that are two popular indexes in dental epidemiology were used to assess the oral health by a dentist before the upper GI endoscopy. According to the Loe plaque index, score: 0= no plaque, score: 1= a film of plaque attaching to the free gingival border and near area of the tooth, score: 2= moderate reposition of deposits within the gingival pocket, score :3= plenty of soft matter within the gingival pocket±on the tooth and gingival border. Scores ≤1, 2 and 3 equal to good, moderate, and poor oral hygiene, respectively. During upper GI endoscopy a total of six biopsy samples were taken from fundus, body, and antrum. A pathologist reported these samples according to Sidney’s classification into superficial gastritis, atrophic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia, and dysplasia.
RESULTS
According to Sidney’s classification 77 (89.5%) patients had superficial gastritis, 3 (3.5%) had atrophic gastritis, and 6 (7%) had intestinal metaplasia. HP was found in 80.2% of the gastric mucosal biopsy samples. There were not statistically significant relationship between Sidney’s classification, presence of HP in gastric mucosal biopsies, and hygiene indicators (p>0.05). No relation was found between the DMFT index and superficial gastritis, atrophic gastritis, and intestinal metaplasia (p>0.05). Gastric infection with HP was found in 70%, 75%, and 100% of patients with mild, moderate, and sever DMFT index, respectively.
CONCLUSION
Our study showed that there might be a relation between poor oral hygiene and gastric precancerous lesions. In addition, HP infection in gastric histopathology might be associated with periodontal disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The oral cavity can be an extra-gastric reservoir for Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori). This can play a role in the pathogenesis of halitosis, glossitis, recurrent aphthous stomatitis, and dental caries. The present study was conducted to detect the presence of H.pylori within the dental biofilm and in saliva samples collected from children suffering from dyspepsia and children without any gastrointestinal complaints. Associations with gastric infection, halitosis, and some oral parameters were also evaluated. METHODS Seventy children (aged between 5-16) with dyspepsia were selected for the study group and control group composed of 30 healthy children without dyspepsia were also included in the study. After detailed oral and clinical examinations for oral parameters, saliva, and supragingival dental biofilm samples were collected for 16S rRNA and 23S rRNA genes detection by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The presence of gastric H.pylori was evaluated in endoscopic biopsy specimens histopathologically. Halitosis was evaluated by benzoyl-DL-arginine-naphthylamid (BANA) test. Salivary S.mutans and Lactobacilli sp. counts were also carried out by commercial kits. RESULTS H.pylori was histopathologically detected amongst 83% of the children with the dyspeptic condition. The detection rate of this bacteria in dental biofilm and saliva samples and halitosis were found relatively higher in the dyspeptic children rather than the control group (p < 0.01). Halitosis was not significantly different between dyspeptic children and those detected with H.pylori (p > 0.05). In the gastric H.pylori positive group with dyspepsia, DMFT/S and dmft/s numbers and plaque indices were found higher than the control group (p < 0.01). Only plaque indices of gastric H.pylori negative group with dyspepsia were found higher than the control group (p < 0.01). S.mutans and Lactobacilli sp. counts were not significantly different between gastric H.pylori positive and negative groups (p > 0.05). Comparing to those with negative for both genes, in children whose dental biofilm and saliva samples were positive for both 16S rRNA and 23S rRNA genes, significantly higher results for halitosis, and DMFS numbers and significantly lower results for dmfs numbers and pH values were found (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Helicobacter pylori can occur in the oral cavity aside and independently from the stomach. However, the high number of bacteria in the oral cavities of children with gastric H.pylori, an association between the presence of H.pylori and halitosis, DMFS, and pH were found.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To isolate Helicobacter pylori (HP) from the dental plaque of a selected group of children and to compare the oral and salivary findings of patients with those of a healthy control group. METHODS A total of 70 children aged 5-15 years were included in this study. An intraoral examination was performed for each patient, and dental plaque and saliva specimens were collected for analysis. Oral health conditions, nutritional habits, tooth brushing frequency, saliva pH levels, flow velocity, and buffering capacities were noted. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used for comparison of the DMFT and dft index. The significance level was set at p=0.05. RESULTS The prevalence of HP in dental plaque was higher in study group than controls (p<0.05). There were no significant differences between groups with respect to DMFT and dft scores, nutritional habits, tooth brushing frequency, saliva pH level or flow velocity (p>0.05). Meanwhile, the buffering capacity of saliva was lower in HP gastritis patients (p<0.05). CONCLUSION There was a high prevalence of HP in dental plaque; thus, the oral cavity may be an important reservoir for HP. Good oral hygiene could be a positive contributor to the treatment of gastritis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common oral mucosal disease with unknown etiology. This cross-sectional study aimed to test the hypothesis that Helicobacter pylori and periodontal disease might play an etiological role in RAS. METHODS Dental plaque samples obtained from 38 patients with RAS and 43 healthy individuals via periodontal examinations were examined for H. pylori colonization. H. pylori was identified using the rapid urease test (RUT). The periodontal status of the patients and controls was based on the following periodontal parameters: periodontal pocket depth (PPD), the plaque index (PI), the gingival index (GI), and clinical attachment loss (CAL). RESULTS RUT results were positive in 34 (89.5 %) of the 38 patients and 24 (55.8 %) of the 43 controls (P = 0.002). There were not any significant differences in mean PPD, PI, GI, or CAL between the patient and control groups (P > 0.05). Mean PPD, PI, GI, and CAL were higher in the RUT-positive RAS patients than in the RUT-negative patients (P > 0.05, for all). CONCLUSIONS The present findings show that H. pylori might have played an etiological role in RAS and might have caused periodontal disease, but RAS was not associated with any of the periodontal parameters examined in this study. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The present study indicates that H. pylori plays a role in the development of RAS, but periodontal diseases have no effect on it. Eradicating H. pylori might be useful to prevent RAS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the incidence of oral infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and identify related epidemiological factors among freshmen of four colleges in Yancheng. METHODS The data, scored positive or negative, were collected on 160 individuals who had been diagnosed by H. pylori Saliva Test Cassette (HPS) during October 2013 to October 2014. H. pylori Saliva Test Cassette (HPS) is to use colloidal gold technique to specifically identify urease in saliva. A standard questionnaire, with variables including sex, educational degree of parents etc., was used in the subjects. Statistical data of diagnostic test were analyzed by SPSS17.0 software. RESULTS Out of 160, 82 subjects were detected positive and 78 were negative. In univariate analysis, dental plaque, family history of stomach diseases, habit of washing hands before meals and habit of brushing teeth twice daily were associated negatively with H. pylori infection. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that dental plaque and family history of stomach diseases were the risk factors which may be associated with H. pylori infection. CONCLUSIONS Dental plaque and family history of gastric diseases were risk factors of oral H. pylori infection. It is vital for the prevention of H. pylori infection to focus on health education and oral hygiene, and avoid transmission by oral-oral route as well.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Few studies have focused on the relationship between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and oral diseases. In this study, we explored the correlation between H. pylori infection and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). METHODS A total of 68 patients with OSCC and 104 age- and sex- matched healthy control subjects were retrospectively enrolled in this study. The H. pylori immunoglobin (Ig) G antibodies in serum were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method to assess the status of H. pylori infection of our study sample. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was also employed using H. pylori genus-specific 16S rRNA primers in fasting blood, and OSCC specimens were analyzed by histochemical stain of each enrolled subject. The strength of correlation between H. pylori and the development of OSCC was estimated by Spearman's correlation coefficient. RESULTS According to the three methods for detecting prevalence of H. pylori infection in the patients with OSCC, it was statistically lower than that in the healthy controls (35.3% vs. 54.8%, P = 0.012). An inverse correlation was observed between H. pylori infection and OSCC development (Spearman's correlation coefficient = -0.191, P = 0.012). In stratification analysis, we also found a statistical association between H. pylori infection and OSCC in the subpopulation with age ≥ 60 years (P = 0.037). CONCLUSION Our findings suggested that H. pylori infection may be negatively related to OSCC. A reverse association of H. pylori infection with OSCC risk in the subpopulation with age ≥ 60 years was also found.

Abstract
AIMS The aims of the present study were to assess the prevalence of periodontal disease and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and their associations within a predefined Indian population. METHODS A community-based cross-sectional study of 500 selected individuals using a questionnaire, oral examination, rapid urease testing of dental plaque, and serological examination for immunoglobulin G antibody to H. pylori was carried out. RESULTS Periodontal disease and H. pylori infection were prevalent in more than 50% of the population. Age, smoking, and diabetic status of the individuals were risk factors for periodontal disease after multivariate analysis, and a lack of proper sewage and waste disposal facilities were found to increase the risk of H. pylori infection. Although there was no association between periodontal disease and H. pylori seropositivity in the community, a highly-significant association was found between periodontal disease and colonization of H. pylori in dental plaque. CONCLUSIONS Because periodontal disease is associated with the increased colonization of H. pylori, new treatment modalities, such as plaque control measures, should be employed for the complete management of H. pylori-associated gastric disease.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) has been found in the oral cavity and stomach, and its infection is one of the most frequent worldwide. We reviewed the literature and conducted a Topic Highlight, which identified studies reporting an association between H. pylori-infection in the oral cavity and H. pylori-positive stomach bacterium. This work was designed to determine whether H. pylori is the etiologic agent in periodontal disease, recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), squamous cell carcinoma, burning and halitosis. Record selection focused on the highest quality studies and meta-analyses. We selected 48 articles reporting on the association between saliva and plaque and H. pylori-infection. In order to assess periodontal disease data, we included 12 clinical trials and 1 meta-analysis. We evaluated 13 published articles that addressed the potential association with RAS, and 6 with squamous cell carcinoma. Fourteen publications focused on our questions on burning and halitosis. There is a close relation between H. pylori infection in the oral cavity and the stomach. The mouth is the first extra-gastric reservoir. Regarding the role of H. pylori in the etiology of squamous cell carcinoma, no evidence is still available.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Helicobacter pylori is a microaerophilic organism, which colonizes in the gastric mucosa. Its role in etiology and development of acute and chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer diseases is scientifically proved. Oral cavity especially supragingival, subgingival plaque and so forth simulate the same microaerophilic environment favorable for the growth of this bacterium. AIM Detection of H. pylori simultaneously in the oral cavity and gastric mucosa of patients suffering from gastric pathologies. OBJECTIVES To detect H. pylori in the oral cavity and gastric mucosa using endoscopy, urease test and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) (urease A gene). Determining its association and corelation with patient demographics, oral hygiene maintenance and periodontal disease status. MATERIALS AND METHODS Endoscopic examination, oral findings oral hygiene index-simplified (OHI-S) and community periodontal index and treatment needs (CPITN) indices were recorded. Antral biopsies and supragingival plaque samples were taken from 56 dyspeptic adult patients. The collected samples were subjected to histological examination, urease broth test and urease A gene amplification using real-time PCR. RESULT H. pylori was detected in the supragingival plaque of individuals with H. pylori-induced gastric diseases using rapid urease test and real-time PCR analysis. Occurrence of same strain of H. pylori simultaneously in plaque and gastric mucosa was observed. Positive correlation was obtained between the collected indices and quantity of H. pylori colonization.

Abstract
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is one of the most common bacterial infections in humans. Although H. pylori may be detected in the stomach of approximately half of the world's population, the mechanisms of transmission of the microorganism from individual to individual are not yet clear. Transmission of H. pylori could occur through iatrogenic, fecal-oral, and oral-oral routes, and through food and water. The microorganism may be transmitted orally and has been detected in dental plaque and saliva. However, the role of the oral cavity in the transmission and recurrence of H. pylori infection has been the subject of debate. A large number of studies investigating the role of oral hygiene and periodontal disease in H. pylori infection have varied significantly in terms of their methodology and sample population, resulting in a wide variation in the reported results. Nevertheless, recent studies have not only shown that the microorganism can be detected fairly consistently from the oral cavity but also demonstrated that the chances of recurrence of H. pylori infection is more likely among patients who harbor the organism in the oral cavity. Furthermore, initial results from clinical trials have shown that H. pylori-positive dyspeptic patients may benefit from periodontal therapy. This paper attempts to review the current body of evidence regarding the role of dental plaque, saliva, and periodontal disease in H. pylori infection.

Abstract
Background. Several studies were reported on the prevalence, and relationship between the existence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) in oral cavity and in stomach of patients. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the existing literature on the presence of H. pylori in the oral cavity and its link to gastric infection, the existence of coinfection, and the impact of anti-H. pylori therapy on the dental plaque and vice versa. Method. Two authors independently searched the Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases for relevant studies. The articles were analyzed critically and all qualified studies were included. The search was carried out by using a combined text and the MeSH search strategies: using the key words Helicobacter, Helicobacter pylori, and H. pylori in combination with dental plaque, periodontitis, and oral hygiene. Results. The data was presented in 8 tables and each topic separately discussed. Conclusion. Based on the systematic review of the available literature on H. pylori infection and its presence in the oral cavity, it can be concluded that dental plaque can act as a reservoir, and proper oral hygiene maintenance is essential to prevent reinfection. Due to the diversified methods and population groups involved in the available literature, no concrete evidence can be laid down. Further studies are necessary to establish the role of H. pylori in the oral cavity and its eradication on preventing the gastroduodenal infection.

Abstract
Evidence indicates that chronic infections and inflammation are associated with increased risk of cancer development. There has also been considerable evidence that proves the interrelationship between bacterial and viral infections and carcinogenesis. Periodontitis is a chronic oral infection thought to be caused by gram-negative anaerobic bacteria in the dental biofilm. Periodontal bacteria and viruses may act synergistically to cause periodontitis. Many studies have shown that periodontal pockets may act as reservoirs for human papilloma virus, cytomegalovirus, Epstein Barr virus, and suspected agents associated with oral cancer. Periodontitis, characterized by epithelial proliferation and migration, results in a chronic release of inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, prostaglandins, and enzymes, all of which are associated with cancer development. This review article intends to shed light on the association between periodontal health and carcinogenesis.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this review is to assess the effect of dental plaque control and periodontal therapy on prevention of gastric Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) recurrence. MATERIALS AND METHODS We conducted searches of electronic databases, and included controlled trials comparing periodontal treatment and eradication therapy of H. pylori with eradication therapy alone for prevention of recurrence of gastric H. pylori. We used the absence of recurrence of gastric H. pylori after the first 3 months as an outcome measure to determine relative risk of persistence of gastric H. pylori. We estimated the degree of heterogeneity among trial results using Q and I(2) statistics. RESULTS Three trials including 298 patients were eligible according to our inclusion criteria. As significant heterogeneity was indicated by the Q statistics (p = 0.04) and I(2) (69%), we used a random-effects model to combine the data. Compared with eradication therapy alone, the adjunction of periodontal therapy significantly reduced the relative risk of persistence of gastric H. pylori by 63% (0.37 [95% CI 0.21-0.64], p = 0.0004) in patients with gastric diseases. CONCLUSIONS The adjunction of periodontal treatment to eradication therapy appears to reduce gastric H. pylori recurrence compared with eradication therapy alone among patients with gastric diseases associated with H. pylori. The results of this meta-analysis should be taken with caution because of the limitations in the primary data.
