Abstract
Background The development and progression of cancer can be impacted by the nutrients and components contained in the diet. This research seeks to explore the relationship between the antioxidant and pro-inflammatory properties of diet and the risk of all-cause mortality among cancer survivors. Methods Adults aged 20 and above who had been diagnosed with cancer and participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2001 to 2018 were selected for this study. Their survival status was verified using death certificate information from the National Death Index. The study employed two established measures, the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII), to evaluate the antioxidant and inflammatory properties of participants' diets. A non-linear association between these two dietary indices and mortality was examined respectively using restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression. To quantify the relationship between the indices and mortality risk, multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were employed, generating hazard ratios and corresponding 95% confidence intervals. Furthermore, the study also explored the connection between the CDAI and DII. Results In this study, a total of 3,507 cancer survivors, representing an estimated 20,016,255 cancer survivors in the US, were included in the baseline analysis. The results showed that patients with lower DII or higher CDAI values had better survival rates. RCS regression revealed that both indicators showed linear relationships with all-cause mortality in the crude and adjusted models. It was consistently noted higher CDAI or lower DII was related to a reduced risk of all-cause mortality in cancer survivors in the Cox regression. Moreover, the subgroup analysis demonstrated that these associations hold true across various subgroups, lending credibility to the overall findings of the study. At last, an inverse correlation was observed between CDAI and DII in the diets of cancer survivors. Conclusion The research suggests that adopting a diet that low in pro-inflammatory foods and high in antioxidants may lower the all-cause mortality in cancer survivors. However, further prospective cohort studies are necessary to confirm these findings.

Abstract
Plant-derived substances are widely used as cosmeceutical and food materials owing to their beneficial properties that promote human health, such as antioxidant, nutritional supply and regenerative potential. In particular, nanovesicles (NVs) from plants contain various biomolecules, including signal proteins, nucleic acids, and metabolites, that participate in cross-kingdom communication. In this study, we isolated NVs from Artemisia princeps (APNVs) based on differential centrifugation and further purification via tangential flow filtration (TFF). Evaluation of the effects of these NVs on the cellular proliferation of fibroblasts clearly indicated their anti-ageing potential for the skin. Specifically, exposure of human dermal fibroblast cells to low concentrations of APNVs (100-200 ng/mL) accelerated cell proliferation over a 7-day period. Treatment with APNVs decreased the senescence level of dermal fibroblast cells, as evidenced by senescence-associated β-galactosidase activity connected with cellular ageing. In the anti-ageing efficacy assessment, inhibition of MMP-1 activity in nanovesicle-treated cells was higher than that induced by the positive control epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). To validate the inhibitory effect of APNVs on anti-ageing in human skin, three-dimensional, reconstituted human keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts were cultured with 1000 ng/mL APNVs. Notably, procollagen type I expression was increased in the culture medium following APNVs treatment. Our collective results suggest that APNVs accelerate type I procollagen production through inhibition of MMP-1. In view of the significant anti-ageing potential of APNVs, we recommend their implementation as an active substance in pharmaceutical and functional cosmeceutical products.

Abstract
Aging is considered the contributory accumulation of abruptions occurring through cell signaling cascades, which ultimately cause changes in physical functions, cell fate, and damage across all organ systems. DNA damage response (DDR) also occurs through telomere shortening, tumor formation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and so forth. Cellular aging occurs through cell cycle arrest, which is the result of extended DDR cascade signaling networks via MDC1, 53BP1, H2AX, ATM, ARF, P53, P13-Akt, BRAF, Sirtuins, NAD + , and so forth. These persistent cell cycle arrests initiated by DDR and other associated stress-induced signals promote a permanent state of cell cycle arrest called senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). However, cellular aging gets accelerated with faulty DNA repair systems, and the produced senescent cells further generate various promoting contributors to age-related dysfunctional diseases including SASP. Any changes to these factors contribute to age-related disease development. Therefore, this review explores anti-aging factors targeting DDR and SASP regulation and their detailed signaling networks. In addition, it allows researchers to identify anti-aging targets and anti-aging therapeutic strategies based on identified and nonidentified targets.

Abstract
This study provides a comprehensive characterization of Physalis peruviana L., covering the nutritional composition of the fruit and the phytochemical profiles and in vitro bioactive properties of berry and calyx extracts. The fresh fruit stood out as a source of dietary fiber (5.16 g/100 g) and is low in fat (0.49 g/100 g). A 100-g serving also contained notable amounts of ascorbic acid (32.0 mg), tocopherols (2.34 mg), potassium (253 mg), phosphorus (45 mg), and magnesium (20 mg). HPLC-DAD-ESI/MS analysis tentatively identified five physalin derivatives and one withanolide in the fruit extract, which showed significant antiproliferative activity against human colorectal adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) and non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NCI-H460) cells. The calyx extracts contained three phenolic acids and four flavonoids, demonstrating high antioxidant activity through physiologically relevant cell-based assays, the ability to inhibit advanced glycation end products (AGEs) formation and nitric oxide production, and also antiproliferative properties. These findings highlight goldenberry as a nutrient-dense fruit rich in vitamins and functional compounds with potential health benefits, supporting its recognition as a "superfruit". Furthermore, the fruit calyx emerged as a valuable source of bioactive secondary metabolites with potential applications in food and pharmaceutical industries and related sectors.

Abstract
Background Few studies have investigated the effects of both dietary inflammatory index (DII) and composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) on mortality in patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Our research aimed to explore the associations between the two indicators with all-cause mortality in COPD patients. Methods We conducted a prospective cohort analysis based on data from the six cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) dataset from 2007 to 2018. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard models were used to analyze the effects of DII and CDAI on all-cause mortality in COPD. We employed restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis to examine the dose-response relationship between two indicators and all-cause mortality, used threshold effect analysis to determine the inflection point, and conducted subgroup analysis and interaction tests to verify the stability of the results. Results A total of 1,457 COPD patients aged over 40 were enrolled in the study. The median follow-up time was 76.8 months. The multivariate Cox proportional hazards model showed that increased DII was associated with an increase in all-cause mortality (HR (95% CI): 1.11(1.04, 1.18), p = 0.002). In contrast, CDAI was negatively correlated with all-cause mortality (HR (95% CI): 0.95(0.91, 0.99), p = 0.01). The RCS analysis showed a nonlinear correlation between DII or CDAI and all-cause mortality. The maximum pro-inflammatory inflection point of DII was 2.32, while the antioxidant threshold of CDAI is -0.12. Subgroup analyses indicated that the relationship between exposure variables and all-cause mortality was stable in most populations. Conclusion Reducing the pro-inflammatory diet or increasing the antioxidant diet can reduce all-cause mortality in COPD patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate evidence relating to whether adopting a diet, associated with improved outcomes for chronic systemic diseases with an inflammatory component, can improve periodontal parameters in patients with periodontal diseases. DATA SOURCES Electronic databases and one platform were systematically searched; Medline, Embase, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library including references of relevant studies. DATA SELECTION AND EXTRACTION 1220 studies were identified of which 9 studies were eligible; 4 RCT's, 1 controlled trial and 4 observational cohort studies DATA SYNTHESIS: 8 out of 9 studies found improved periodontal parameters associated with a diet that was low in refined carbohydrates, low in saturated fats, high in fibre and high in nutrition but the studies were low to medium quality of evidence and the diets, method of recording the diets and periodontal parameters varied between the studies as did the study duration and age of participants. CONCLUSION Current evidence supports the hypothesis that adopting a healthy diet has the potential to positively impact periodontal parameters in patients with periodontal diseases, particularly in the older population but the effects may be negated by confounding factors such as smoking. 9 studies were included in the review which were rated moderate or low quality of evidence.

Abstract
Caloric restriction (CR) has been proposed as a nutritional strategy to combat chronic diseases, including neurodegenerative diseases, as well as to delay aging. However, despite the benefits of CR, questions remain about its underlying mechanisms and cellular and molecular targets.Objective: As inflammatory processes are the basis or accompany chronic diseases and aging, we investigated the protective role of CR in the event of an acute inflammatory stimulus.Methods: Peripheral inflammatory and metabolic parameters were evaluated in Wistar rats following CR and/or acute lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration, as well as glial changes (microglia and astrocytes), in two regions of the brain (hippocampus and hypothalamus) involved in the inflammatory response. We used a protocol of 30% CR, for 4 or 8 weeks. Serum and brain parameters were analyzed by biochemical or immunological assays.Results: Benefits of CR were observed during the inflammatory challenge, where the partial reduction of serum interleukin-6, mediated by CR, attenuated the systemic response. In the central nervous system (CNS), specifically in the hippocampus, CR attenuated the response to the LPS, as evaluated by tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) levels. Furthermore, in the hippocampus, CR increased the glutathione (GSH) levels, resulting in a better antioxidant response.Discussion: This study contributes to the understanding of the effects of CR, particularly in the CNS, and expands knowledge about glial cells, emphasizing their importance in neuroprotection strategies.

Abstract
SDIMMMER is an acronym intended for use in both clinical practice and medical research. It facilitates a comprehensive evaluation of a patient's metabolic profile and serves as a mnemonic for the following key assessment areas: Sleep, Diet, Microbiome, Metabolism, Medications, Exams, and Rehabilitation. In the clinical setting, SDIMMMER's primary objective is to monitor and manage the patient's metabolic status, particularly targeting low-grade chronic systemic inflammation, a hallmark of metabolic syndrome (MS). This inflammatory condition is characterized by elevated levels of circulating inflammatory cytokines and increased macrophage infiltration in peripheral tissues. SDIMMMER aims to enhance the effectiveness of ortho biological treatments by elevating growth factor levels, thereby enhancing patient outcomes. Additionally, SDIMMMER emphasizes guiding patients toward positive lifestyle changes to improve overall quality of life and foster a healthier metabolism. SDIMMMER introduces a patient metabolic profile quantification tool comprising 7 domains, totaling 35 items. Additionally, an instructional guide is provided to facilitate the application process. Its versatility spans various clinical and research domains, showcasing its potential to positively influence multiple fields.

Abstract
Aims As aging is a major risk factor for chronic diseases, strategies to promote healthy aging are essential. Dietary diversity has been reported to be beneficial for human health, however, the role in the biological aging process remains underexplored. Our aim was to analyse the potential link between diet diversity and aging. Methods Twenty-two thousand six hundred participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were included in this study. Dietary diversity was assessed by the dietary diversity score (DDS), which aggregated data on participants' self-reported dietary categories for the 5 major food groups (18 subgroups) over 2 rounds. Biological age was determined using the phenotypic age, with the residual between biological age and chronological age, phenotypic age acceleration, representing biological aging advance. Weighted multivariate regressions analysis were used to examine the relationship between DDS and phenotypic age acceleration. Sensitivity, subgroup interaction and mediation analyses were employed for further analysis. Results Higher DDS was consistently associated with slower phenotypic age acceleration (β < 0, p < 0.001). Subgroup analyses revealed that the inverse relationship persisted across categories, with minimal interaction effects. Sensitivity analyses confirmed the robustness of results. The oxidative stress indicator glutamyltransferase partially mediated the relationship between DDS and aging [4.9% (3.6, 6.0%), p < 0.001]. Conclusion Dietary diversity is associated with a slower rate of biological aging, which may be due in part to reduced oxidative stress. These findings underscore the potential of a rich, broad-spectrum diet to promote healthy aging and reduce the burden of age-related diseases.

Abstract
An increase in systemic inflammation (inflammaging) is one of the hallmarks of aging. Epigenetic (DNA methylation) clocks can quantify the degree of biological aging and this can be reversed by lifestyle and pharmacological intervention. We aimed to investigate whether a multi-component nutritional supplement could reduce systemic inflammation and epigenetic age in healthy older adults.We recruited 80 healthy older participants (mean age ± SD: 71.85 ± 6.23; males = 31, females = 49). Blood and saliva were obtained pre and post a 12-week course of a multi-component supplement, containing: Vitamin B3, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Omega 3 fish oils, Resveratrol, Olive fruit phenols and Astaxanthin. Plasma GDF-15 and C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations were quantified as markers of biological aging and inflammation respectively. DNA methylation was assessed in whole blood and saliva and used to derive epigenetic age using various clock algorithms.No difference between the epigenetic and chronological ages of participants was observed pre- and post-treatment by the blood-based Horvath or Hannum clocks, or the saliva-based InflammAge clock. However, in those with epigenetic age acceleration of ≥ 2 years at baseline, a significant reduction in epigenetic age (p = 0.015) and epigenetic age acceleration (p = 0.0058) was observed post-treatment using the saliva-based InflammAge clock. No differences were observed pre- and post-treatment in plasma GDF-15 and CRP, though participants with CRP indicative of an elevated cardiovascular disease risk (hsCRP ≥ 3µg/ml), had a reduction in CRP post-supplementation (p = 0.0195).Our data suggest a possible benefit of combined nutritional supplementation in individuals with an accelerated epigenetic age and inflammaging.

Abstract
Background Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is a vital indicator of overall health and cardiovascular efficiency. Systemic inflammation significantly impacts CRF, and reducing systemic inflammation may serve as an effective strategy to improve CRF. Diet plays a crucial role in systemic inflammation, but daily dietary intake typically involves multiple elements rather than a single nutrient. The Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) provides an overall assessment of dietary inflammation on the basis of the anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory effects of the nutrients consumed. However, the relationship between DII and CRF is not yet well understood. Aims To examine the association between the DII and CRF. Method This study analyzed 3,087 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 1999 and 2002. The study subjects were divided into three distinct groups by DII tertile: T1 (n = 1,027), T2 (n = 1,029), and T3 (n = 1,031). The associations between DII levels and CRF were examined via logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic splines (RCSs). Results Elevated DII scores were significantly linked to low CRF levels. Compared with those in the lowest tertile, participants in the highest DII tertile exhibited a greater prevalence of low CRF (T1: 10.85%, T2: 16.32%, T3: 19.31%). In the model with full adjustments, elevated scores on the DII were consistently linked with a heightened likelihood of low CRF (OR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.07-1.28; P < 0.001). Compared with those in the T1 group, participants with higher DIIs had an increased risk of lower CRF (T2: OR: 1.42, 95% CI: 1.01-2.01, P = 0.046; T3: OR: 1.71, 95% CI: 1.22-2.40, P = 0.003). Additionally, a significant interaction (P = 0.045) between sex and the DII for low CRF was observed within the population. Conclusion A higher DII score is linked to an elevated risk of low CRF. Moreover, sex can impact CRF, with women being more prone to low CRF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The study of dietary patterns in older adults (OA) and their association with geriatric syndromes (GS) is scarce in Latin America. OBJECTIVE To describe the association of dietary patterns with GS in the Mexican older adult population, using data from the 2018-19 National Health and Nutrition Survey. METHODS Dietary data were collected from 3,511 adults (≥60 years of age, both sexes) using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Dietary patterns were derived by principal component analysis based on the consumption of 162 foods from 24 food groups. The GS studied were: frailty, depressive symptoms (DS), low appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM); additionally, we studied inflammation (serum CRP>5 mg/L). Logistic regression models were used. RESULTS Four major dietary patterns were identified: a) "Western", b) "Prudent", c) "Soups", and d) "Traditional". The middle and higher tertiles of the "Prudent" pattern were associated with lower odds of DS (OR 0.71, p = 0.04; and OR 0.61, p = 0.008), respectively. The second tertile of the "Soups" pattern was associated with lower odds of low ASMM (OR 0.68, p = 0031) and inflammation (OR 0.58, p = 0.022). The highest tertile of the "Traditional" pattern was associated with low ASMM (OR 1.55, p = 0.008) and lower odds of inflammation (OR 0.69, p = 0.044). No association was found between the "Western" dietary pattern and GS. CONCLUSIONS Three of four major dietary patterns were associated with GS in older Mexican adults. Further studies are needed to address strategies to improve diet quality in this age group and its association with health and functional outcomes.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is associated with inflammation and a high level of comorbidities. Atypical depression (AD) is a MDD subtype based on DSM criteria, that could have specific underlying biological mechanisms. AD is associated with elevated cardiovascular (CVD) comorbidities, higher risk of suicide attempts, hypersomnia, and anxiety disorder. In this study, we aim to investigate if AD and polysomnographic parameters could be associated with low-grade inflammation (LGI). LGI is defined by a range from 3 to 10 mg/L of C-reactive protein levels. We carried out a retrospective cohort study in which 765 individuals with MDD were split into two groups: with and without LGI. Our results exhibit differences between the groups for the polysomnographic parameters, with the LGI group showing parameters already associated with inflammation such as reduced rapid eye movement sleep and elevated hypoxemia markers (identified as CVD risk factor). We found that AD is associated with LGI (OR 1.48; p = 0.047) after adjustment. Likewise, we found an LGI prevalence in AD higher (34.8%) than in MDD without atypical features (26.8%). Overall, these results confirm the low-grade inflammation feature of AD and highlight polysomnographic parameters associated with LGI that could also act as risk factors in this context.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The occurrence and progression of asthma can be influenced by the components in food. Our study aims to determine whether dietary antioxidant and inflammatory potential are associated with the risk of mortality in asthma patients. METHODS Participants from the 2001-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) aged 20 years and older with a diagnosis of asthma were included. Mortality status was obtained according to death certificate records from the National Death Index. The antioxidant and inflammatory potential of the diet was assessed using two widely used and dependable indices, Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII). Restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression was used to analyze the non-linear relationship between the two indexes and mortality. Multivariable Cox proportional risk models were used to estimate hazard ratio and 95% confidence intervals for mortality. Finally, the relationship between CDAI and DII was analyzed. RESULTS A total of 4698 NHANES participants represented 23.2 million non-institutionalized residents of the US were enrolled in our study. Patients with higher CDAI or lower DII exhibited longer survival times. RCS regression showed a linear relationship of CDAI or DII with mortality. In the Cox regression, both crude and adjusted models demonstrated that higher CDAI or lower DII was linked to a reduced risk of all-cause mortality. Similar associations were found in subgroup analysis. Finally, a negative relationship was found between CDAI and DII. CONCLUSION Reducing pro-inflammatory or increasing antioxidant diets could reduce all-cause mortality among adult asthma patients.

Abstract
Background Cesarean section (CS) is one of the most important pregnancy concerns in the world. Increased inflammation is associated with increased risk factors for cesarean section. Diet plays a major role in reducing inflammation. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary inflammatory index (DII) and the risk of Cesarean section in Tehranian women. Methods This case-control study included 390 pregnant women in Tehran, Iran between 2020 and 2021 at their initial visit to pregnancy clinics, selected by a cluster sampling method. Dietary intakes were determined using valid reliable questionnaires and DII was calculated. Weight, height, and waist circumference were also measured. Results The mean age of the subjects was 28.5 yr (± 5.02) and weight, body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in the case group with a higher DII were higher. Odds ratio (OR) of cesarean section in DII quartiles was statistically significant. Confounding factors including age, BMI and total energy intake were adjusted in the first model and weight, waist circumference, physical activity and supplements in the second model and the relationship remained significant (P<0.001). Conclusion High scores of dietary inflammatory index, possibly through an increase in inflammatory factors, can increase the chances of having a cesarean section.

Abstract
Background This cross-sectional study aims to explore the interactive effects of the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (CDAI) and Body Mass Index (BMI) on stroke risk among U.S. adults, utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted between 2001 and 2018. Methods The analysis involved 42,042 participants from a representative sample of non-institutionalized U.S. civilians, selected through a stratified, multistage probability sampling method. Dietary intake data were collected over two 24-h periods using the Automated Multiple-Pass Method. The study calculated a modified CDAI to assess dietary antioxidant intake, excluding supplements and water sources. Statistical methods included multivariable logistic regression and Generalized Additive Models (GAM) to evaluate the interaction between CDAI scores and BMI in relation to stroke risk, adjusting for a wide range of demographic, lifestyle, and health covariates. Results The research identified a significant interaction between CDAI scores and BMI categories in stroke risk assessment. While a negative correlation was observed between CDAI scores and stroke risk across the total population (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.96-0.99), this relationship varied notably across different BMI groups. In participants with a BMI ≥25, a statistically significant negative association persisted, displaying a non-linear pattern. The study also revealed an inflection point in the CDAI score, indicating a shift in the relationship between dietary antioxidants and stroke risk. Conclusion This study underscores the complex interaction between dietary antioxidant intake and BMI in determining stroke risk among U.S. adults. The findings suggest that individuals with higher BMI may experience more pronounced benefits from dietary antioxidants in stroke prevention. These insights could inform targeted dietary recommendations and public health strategies aimed at reducing stroke risk, particularly in populations with higher BMI. Further research is needed to fully understand these interactions and their implications for stroke prevention guidelines.

Abstract
With the awareness that the Standard American Diet is a critical contributor to chronic diseases, this initiative aimed to assess the effects of a 28-day dietary challenge health care improvement project on health system employee energy level, sleep quality, gastrointestinal function, ability to concentrate, and aches/pains, including the impact of adherence level, during a period of restricted intake of gluten, dairy, and sugar offered annually from 2021 to 2023. A total of 754 employees completed the pre-challenge survey; analyses included 354 employees who completed both pre-challenge and post-challenge surveys in at least 1 year of this project. Wilcoxon signed rank tests compared presurvey and postsurvey responses to self-reported energy level, sleep quality, gastrointestinal function, ability to concentrate, and aches/pains. Analysis of variance with Tukey's honestly significant difference tests compared self-reported adherence level with change scores, with η2 representing effect size. In each challenge year, the mean rank levels of energy, sleep quality, gastrointestinal function, concentration, and aches/pains improved significantly between pre-surveys and post-surveys (all P<.001). Although an association between significant positive change and diet adherence level was found for all items in at least 1 challenge year, those who mostly or completely adhered to the challenge diet restrictions reported significantly greater positive change in energy levels and gastrointestinal symptoms than those who did not or minimally adhered in all challenge years, with small to medium effect sizes. In conclusion, Essentia Health's employee challenge appeared to improve self-reported outcomes in 5 symptom domains, with energy levels and gastrointestinal symptoms correlating most favorably to adherence to the challenge. These findings have health and cost implications, which could be confirmed by formal research in employee and other populations.

Abstract
Traumatic experiences from disasters have enduring effects on health, both directly and indirectly by influencing health behaviours. Among potential pathways, the impact of disaster-related trauma on dietary patterns has been understudied. This study investigated the relationship between disaster-related trauma and dietary inflammatory index (DII®), and how these relationships differed by gender and whether they prepare meal by themselves or not among older survivors of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (n 1375). Dietary data were collected in 2020 using a brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire, from which we derived a dietary inflammatory index (DII®) based on twenty-six food/nutrient items, where higher scores indicate pro-inflammatory (i.e. unhealthy) diet. We found that the experience of housing damage due to the earthquake and tsunami was associated with slightly higher DII scores (coef. = 0·38, 95 % CI -0·05, 0·81). Specifically, women who cooked by themselves tended to have higher DII when they experienced housing damage (coef. = 1·33, 95 %CI -0·63, 3·28). On the other hand, loss of friends was associated with a lower DII score (coef. = -0·28, 95 % CI -0·54, -0·01). These findings highlight the importance of providing support to groups who are at increased risk of deterioration in dietary quality in the aftermath of disasters.

Abstract
Considering that interventions related to lifestyle, especially nutrition have been proposed as the first line of prevention and treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and regarding the proven relationship between PCOS and inflammation, the present study was designed to find out the possible association of Diet Inflammatory Index (DII) with the inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein (CRP) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6), and compare the obtained results in PCOS and non-PCOS women. This case-control study was conducted on 45 PCOS and 40 non-PCOS women. Food intake and DII were measured using a 147-item Food Frequency Questionnaire. All participants were tested for the serum levels of IL-6 and CRP. Finally, the obtained results were compared between the two groups of PCOS and non-PCOS women. Significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of age, menstrual status and number of pregnancies (P < 0.05). Comparison of DII values showed no significant difference between the two groups of women (P = 0.68), but IL-6 was significantly higher in the PCOS group than in the control group (4.94 ± 1.97 vs. 3.48 ± 1.77, P < 0.001). Also in terms of CRP, no significant difference was observed between the two groups (P > 0.05). The difference of DII between the case and control groups were not significant and Pearson's correlation test did not show a significant correlation between DII and IL-6 (P˃0.05). This result can be due to the influence of several factors affecting the determination of DII such as education level, health status, physical activity level, age, and calorie intake. It seems that diet, especially consumption of more carbohydrates plays a role in causing chronic inflammation, as well as the occurrence and exacerbation of PCOS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Improving dietary habits is a first-line recommendation for patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). It is unclear which dietary pattern most effectively lowers cardiovascular risk factors and what the short- and long-term effects are. Therefore, this network meta-analysis compared the effects of popular dietary patterns on cardiovascular risk factors in patients with established CVD. METHODS A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane library, SCOPUS and Web of Science was conducted up to 1 April 2023. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the effect of popular dietary patterns (Mediterranean, moderate carbohydrate, low glycemic index, low-fat and minimal dietary intervention) on cardiovascular risk factors (body weight, systolic blood pressure, lipids) in CVD populations were selected. A random-effects network meta-analysis was performed. RESULTS Seventeen RCTs comprising 6,331 participants were included. The moderate carbohydrate diet had the most beneficial effect on body weight (-4.6 kg, 95%CrI -25.1; 15.8) and systolic blood pressure (-7.0 mmHg 95%CrI -16.8; 2.7) compared to minimal intervention. None of the included dietary patterns had a favorable effect on low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. After 12 months, the effects were attenuated compared to those at < 6 months. CONCLUSIONS In this network meta-analysis of 17 randomized trials, potentially clinically relevant effects of dietary interventions on CV risk factors were observed, but there was considerable uncertainty due to study heterogeneity, low adherence, or actual diminished effects in the medically treated CVD population. It was not possible to select optimal dietary patterns for secondary CVD prevention. Given recent clinical trials demonstrating the potential of dietary patterns to significantly reduce cardiovascular event risk, it is likely that these effects are effectuated through alternative physiological pathways.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperlipidemia is closely associated with dietary patterns and inflammation. However, the relationship between hyperlipidemia and the inflammatory potential of diets remains unexplored. The research was conducted to examine the relationship between hyperlipidemia and dietary inflammatory index (DII). METHODS The data utilized in the research were acquired from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2005 to 2018. The information on dietary intake was gathered by conducting 24-h dietary recall interviews. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) and Survey-weighted logistic regression were utilized to determine the association between DII and hyperlipidemia. Furthermore, stratification analysis was carried out. RESULTS This study included 8982 individuals with and 3458 without hyperlipidemia. Participants with hyperlipidemia exhibited higher DII scores than those without hyperlipidemia. Following adjustment for gender, age, race, education level, marital status, poverty, drinking status, diabetes, hypertension, smoking status, body mass index (BMI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and hemoglobin (Hb), the association between the prevalence of hyperlipidemia and DII remained significant. The RCS data demonstrated that the hyperlipidemia prevalence did not exhibit an increase until the DII score was approximately 2.78. Stratification analysis revealed that the association between DII and hyperlipidemia persisted in all subgroups. CONCLUSIONS DII was associated with hyperlipidemia, and the threshold DII score for the risk of hyperlipidemia was 2.78.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a psychiatric disease associated with inflammation. The Western diet (WD) is a high-fat, high-sugar diet also associated with inflammation. We aimed to show whether the diet of MDD patients was a WD and could act as a risk factor in this context. We conducted a transversal study of MDD patients and controls (CTRLs) without comorbidities. We performed blood analyses including C-reactive protein (CRP), a diet anamnesis, and an advanced glycation end-product assessment. We found that 34.37% of MDD patients had a CRP level above 3 to 10 mg/L, which remained higher than CTRLs after adjustments (sex, BMI, age, smoking status). The MDD patients had an excess of sugar and saturated and trans fatty acids; a deficiency in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid, monounsaturated acid, dietary fibers, and antioxidants; a high glycemic load; and aggravating nutritional factors when compared to the CTRLs. We found correlations between nutritional factors and CRP in univariate/multivariate analysis models. Thus, MDD patients showed an elevated CRP level and a WD pattern that could contribute to sustaining an inflammatory state. Further studies are required to confirm this, but the results highlighted the importance of nutrition in the context of MDD.

Abstract
It is estimated that 25% of the world's population has non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. This disease can advance to a more severe form, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a disease with a greater probability of progression to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). NASH could be characterized as a necro-inflammatory complication of chronic hepatic steatosis. The combination of factors that lead to NASH and its progression to HCC in the setting of inflammation is not clearly understood. The portal vein is the main route of communication between the intestine and the liver. This allows the transfer of products derived from the intestine to the liver and the hepatic response pathway of bile and antibody secretion to the intestine. The intestinal microbiota performs a fundamental role in the regulation of immune function, but it can undergo changes that alter its functionality. These changes can also contribute to cancer by disrupting the immune system and causing chronic inflammation and immune dysfunction, both of which are implicated in cancer development. In this article, we address the link between inflammation, microbiota and HCC. We also review the different in vitro models, as well as recent clinical trials addressing liver cancer and microbiota.

Abstract
Immunosenescence and inflammaging facilitate the insurgence of chronic diseases. The Mediterranean diet is a non-invasive intervention to improve the chronic low-grade inflammatory status associated with aging. Olive oil oleuropein (OLE) and hydroxytyrosol (HT) demonstrated a controversial modulatory action on inflammation in vitro when tested at concentrations exceeding those detectable in human plasma. We studied the potential anti-inflammatory effects of OLE and HT at nutritionally relevant concentrations on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) as regards cell viability, frequency of leukocyte subsets, and cytokine release, performing an age-focused analysis on two groups of subjects: Adult (age 18-64 years) and Senior (age ≥ 65 years). OLE and HT were used alone or as a pre-treatment before challenging PBMCs with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Both polyphenols had no effect on cell viability irrespective of LPS, but 5 µM HT had an LPS-like effect on monocytes, reducing the intermediate subset in Adult subjects. OLE and HT had no effect on LPS-triggered release of TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8, but 5 µM HT reduced IL-10 secretion by PBMCs from Adult vs. Senior group. In summary, nutritionally relevant concentrations of OLE and HT elicit no anti-inflammatory effect and influence the frequency of immune cell subsets with age-related different outcomes.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Lifestyle modifications have gained increasing recognition as key interventions in preventing and managing CVDs. This narrative review aims to provide a thorough assessment of the impact of lifestyle modifications on cardiovascular health. The review encompasses various aspects, including diet, physical activity, smoking cessation, stress management, and weight management. Additionally, the review explores the underlying mechanisms by which lifestyle modifications influence cardiovascular health and highlights the evidence from clinical trials, observational studies, and meta-analyses. The findings of this review emphasize the importance of lifestyle modifications in reducing the risk factors associated with CVDs and improving cardiovascular outcomes.

Abstract
Chronological age (CA) may not accurately reflect the health status of an individual. Rather, biological age (BA) or hypothetical underlying "functional" age has been proposed as a relevant indicator of healthy aging. Observational studies have found that decelerated biological aging or Δage (BA-CA) is associated with a lower risk of disease and mortality. In general, CA is associated with low-grade inflammation, a condition linked to the risk of the incidence of disease and overall cause-specific mortality, and is modulated by diet. To address the hypothesis that diet-related inflammation is associated with Δage, a cross-sectional analysis of data from a sub-cohort from the Moli-sani Study (2005-2010, Italy) was performed. The inflammatory potential of the diet was measured using the Energy-adjusted Dietary Inflammatory Index (E-DIITM) and a novel literature-based dietary inflammation score (DIS). A deep neural network approach based on circulating biomarkers was used to compute BA, and the resulting Δage was fit as the dependent variable. In 4510 participants (men 52.0%), the mean of CA (SD) was 55.6 y (±11.6), BA 54.8 y (±8.6), and Δage -0.77 (±7.7). In a multivariable-adjusted analysis, an increase in E-DIITM and DIS scores led to an increase in Δage (β = 0.22; 95%CI 0.05, 0.38; β = 0.27; 95%CI 0.10, 0.44, respectively). We found interaction for DIS by sex and for E-DIITM by BMI. In conclusion, a pro-inflammatory diet is associated with accelerated biological aging, which likely leads to an increased long-term risk of inflammation-related diseases and mortality.

Abstract
Chronic inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of many non-infectious diseases, including cardiovascular diseases (CVD), a leading cause of death in Europe. The aim of the study was to assess the inflammatory potential of the diets of participants enrolled in the Polish arm of the Prospective Urban and Rural Epidemiological (PURE) study, evaluate the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) score with the dietary content, and to determine the correlation of DII score with selected anthropometric parameters and biochemical risk factors for CVD. Diets were assessed with the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Among participants with pro-inflammatory diets, we reported higher mean values of triglycerides (TG), fasting glucose (FG), atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), and the Castelli's risk index (CRI) in the group of men and women, and higher waist circumference (WC) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) in the group of women. Pro-inflammatory diets were associated with higher intake of refined grains, sweets, juices, red meat, high-fat cheese and cream, alcohol, fats except for vegetable oils, potatoes, sugar and honey, French fries, fried fish, and processed/high-fat poultry. Moreover, study participants with pro-inflammatory diets consumed more milk, low-fat dairy, and eggs associated with unhealthy dietary habits, but this should not be considered as an independent CVD risk factor. Anthropometric and biochemical outcomes were more favorable among study participants who consumed more vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, raisins, pulses, low-fat poultry, and tea. However, association of beverage consumption with dietary inflammatory potential requires further study.

Abstract
This scoping review aimed to summarise the effects of the ketone body β-hydroxybutyrate. The review details the revealed pathways and functional properties following its intervention in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. In this study, 5 research publications that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were shortlisted. Following the intervention, we discovered a tendency of reduced inflammatory status in microglia, as evidenced by lower levels of pro-inflammatory mediators produced, reduced microgliosis in afflicted tissues, and enhanced cognitive functions in neurodegenerative models. We found that there is a significant overlap in the mechanism of action of β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) via activation of the G-protein-Coupled Receptor 109A (GPR109a) receptor and deactivation of the inflammasome complex. Furthermore, although comparing outcomes can be challenging due to the heterogeneity in the study model, the results we have assembled here were consistent, giving us confidence in the intervention's efficacy. We also discussed new studies where BHB is involved in various roles in regulating inflammation in microglia, allowing for fresh therapeutic targets against neurodegeneration. This brief review provides evidence to support the huge potential of BHB in the treatment of neurodegenerative illnesses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stroke is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability on a global scale. Most clinicians tend to underestimate the importance of diet and inadequate or dysfunctional eating attitudes in patients with a complicated relationship with food. Concerned about the potential of an independent Lebanese approach, and also because prior international research has revealed a link between eating intake or choice and ischemic stroke risk, it was considered vital to broaden the scope of the literature and evaluate further the association of disordered eating attitudes and focus on the distinct relationship with food in the case of orthorexia nervosa (ON) in the Lebanese community. Consequently, the purpose of the present study is to investigate the potential association between pre-existing disordered eating attitudes, specifically ON, and ischemic stroke risk, with an emphasis on the evidence supporting a Mediterranean-style diet. METHODS This research is a case-control survey study involving 113 Lebanese individuals with ischemic stroke and 451 age-(within 5 years) and sex-matched controls recruited from several hospitals in Lebanon (April 2020-April 2021). RESULTS According to the findings of our first regression model, living 100 m from a crowded road (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 3.421, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.585-7.387), living 100 m from an electricity generator (aOR: 3.686, 95% CI: 1.681-8.085), higher waterpipe dependence (aOR: 1.204, 95% CI: 1.117-1.297), higher exposure to passive smoking (aOR: 2.651, 95% CI: 2.051-3.426), being married (aOR: 3.545, 95% CI: 1.297-9.689), having a low educational attainment (aOR: 0.239, 95% CI: 0.084-0.679), vigorous physical activity (aOR: 1.003, 95% CI: 1.001-1.006), and having more inappropriate eating (aOR: 1.040, 95% CI: 1.006-1.074) were all associated with higher odds of having ischemic stroke. Furthermore, atrial fibrillation (aOR: 2.945, 95% CI: 1.010-8.585), diabetes (aOR: 2.550, 95% CI: 1.169-5.561), heart diseases (aOR: 6.193, 95% CI: 2.196-17.463), and hypertension (aOR: 2.744, 95% CI: 1.049-7.180) were also linked to an increased risk of stroke. Moreover, having more orthorexia nervosa tendencies (aOR: 1.123, 95% CI: 1.021-1.235) was related to a higher odds of having an ischemic stroke, whereas better adherence to the MeD was significantly linked (aOR: 0.691, 95% CI: 0.583-0.819) to lower odds of ischemic stroke. CONCLUSIONS Ischemic stroke patients were more likely to have disordered eating attitudes and orthorexic behaviors. Furthermore, the MeD has been found to be beneficial in reducing ischemic stroke risk. Despite the study's focus, outdoor pollution, waterpipe dependence, and passive smoking were linked to ischemic stroke. In summary, this review suggests that improving one's nutritional status and making a few lifestyle changes are key stroke prevention and treatment methods.

Abstract
Chronic, low-grade inflammation is linked to the development of non-communicable diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, and others which together contribute to more than 50% of deaths globally. Modulation of inflammatory responses may be a promising strategy, and n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 LC-PUFA) may offer a new therapeutic option in inflammatory conditions. Seaweeds are characterised by high nutritional quality and are a good source of many bioactive compounds, including n-3 LC-PUFA. This review addresses the potential anti-inflammatory properties of seaweed derived lipids, and their immunomodulating mechanisms in order to identify the possible applications of seaweed as an anti-inflammatory functional food ingredient or dietary supplement. A few studies have evaluated the anti-inflammatory activity of seaweed lipids using crude lipid extracts, lipid fractions and isolated complex lipids from several seaweeds belonging to the Ochrophyta and Rhodophyta phyla, with only three Ulva rigida, Ulva sp. and Codium tomentosum within the Chlorophyta phylum. It was reported that seaweed derived lipids suppress inducible nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase-2 expression and reduce nuclear factor κB p100 and myeloid differentiation primary response 88 protein levels leading to the downregulation of the production of several pro-inflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide. Further investigations are required to unravel the complex mechanisms underlying their preventive action against chronic inflammation and their potential use as a new functional food ingredient and/or health supplement.

Abstract
Aging is associated with a low-grade, systemic inflammatory state defined as "inflammaging", ruled by the loss of proper regulation of the immune system leading to the accumulation of pro-inflammatory mediators. Such a condition is closely connected to an increased risk of developing chronic diseases. A number of studies demonstrate that olive oil phenolic compound oleuropein and its derivative hydroxytyrosol contribute to modulating tissue inflammation and oxidative stress, thus becoming attractive potential candidates to be used in the context of nutraceutical interventions, in order to ameliorate systemic inflammation in aging subjects. In this review, we aim to summarize the available data about the anti-inflammatory properties of oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol, discussing them in the light of molecular pathways involved in the synthesis and release of inflammatory mediators in inflammaging.

Abstract
Different strategies have been investigated for a more satisfactory treatment of advanced breast cancer, including the adjuvant use of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). These nutritional compounds have been shown to possess potent anti-inflammatory and antiangiogenic activities, the capacity to affect transduction pathways/receptors involved in cell growth and to reprogram tumor microenvironment. Omega-3 PUFA-containing nanoformulations designed for drug delivery in breast cancer were shown to potentiate the effects of enclosed drugs, enhance drug delivery to target sites, and minimize drug-induced side effects. We have critically analyzed here the results of the most recent studies investigating the effects of omega-3 PUFA-containing nanoformulations in breast cancer. The anti-neoplastic efficacy of omega-3 PUFAs has also been convincingly demonstrated by using preclinical in vivo models of ovarian cancer. The results obtained are critically analyzed here and seem to provide a sufficient rationale to move to still lacking interventional clinical trials, as well as to evaluate possible advantages of enclosing omega-3 PUFAs to drug-delivery nanosystems for ovarian cancer. Future perspectives in this area are also provided.

Abstract
It is already well-known that visceral adipose tissue is inseparably related to the pathogenesis, activity, and general outcome of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). We are getting closer and closer to the molecular background of this loop, finding certain relationships between activated mesenteric tissue and inflammation within the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract. Recently, relatively new data have been uncovered, indicating a direct impact of body fat on the pattern of pharmacological treatment in the course of IBD. On the other hand, ileal and colonic types of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis appear to be more diversified than it was thought in the past. However, the question arises whether at this stage we are able to translate this knowledge into the practical management of IBD patients or we are still exploring the scientific background of this pathology, having no specific tools to be used directly in patients. Our review explores IBD in the context of obesity and associated disorders, focusing on adipokines, creeping fat, and possible relationships between these disorders and the treatment of IBD patients.

Abstract
Meat consumption has represented an important evolutionary step for humans. However, modern patterns of consumption, including excess intake, type of meat and cooking method have been the focus of attention as a potential cause of rise in non-communicable diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between total, red and processed meat with health outcomes and to assess the level of evidence by performing a systematic search of meta-analyses of prospective cohort studies. Convincing evidence of the association between increased risk of (i) colorectal adenoma, lung cancer, CHD and stroke, (ii) colorectal adenoma, ovarian, prostate, renal and stomach cancers, CHD and stroke and (iii) colon and bladder cancer was found for excess intake of total, red and processed meat, respectively. Possible negative associations with other health outcomes have been reported. Excess meat consumption may be detrimental to health, with a major impact on cardiometabolic and cancer risk.

Abstract
Aging as an inevitable phenomenon is associated with pervasive changes in physiological functions. There is a relationship between aging and the increase of several chronic diseases. Most age-related disorders are accompanied by an underlying chronic inflammatory state, as demonstrated by local infiltration of inflammatory cells and greater levels of proinflammatory cytokines in the bloodstream. Within inflammaging, many epigenetic events, especially DNA methylation, change. During the aging process, due to aberrations of DNA methylation, biological processes are disrupted, leading to the emergence or progression of a variety of human diseases, including cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The focus of this review is on DNA methylation, which is involved in inflammaging-related activities, and how its dysregulation leads to human disorders.

Abstract
Chronic hyperglycemia, the diagnostic biomarker of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), is a condition that fosters oxidative stress and proinflammatory signals, both involved in the promotion of cellular senescence. Senescent cells acquire a proinflammatory secretory phenotype, called SASP, exacerbating and perpetuating the detrimental effects of hyperglycemia. Bioactive compounds can exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the synergistic anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of the most extensively investigated natural compounds have not been confirmed yet in senescent cells and in hyperglycemic conditions. Here, we exposed young and replicative senescent HUVEC (yHUVEC and sHUVEC) to a high-glucose (HG) condition (45 mM) and treated them with Polydatin (POL), Curcumin (CUR) and Quercetin (QRC), alone or in combination (MIX), to mirror the anti-inflammatory component OxiDefTM contained in the novel nutraceutical GlicefenTM (Mivell, Italy). In both yHUVEC and sHUVEC, the MIX significantly decreased the expression levels of inflammatory markers, such as MCP-1, IL-1β and IL-8, and ROS production. Importantly, in sHUVEC, a synergistic effect of the MIX was observed, suggesting its senomorphic activity. Moreover, the MIX was able to reduce the expression level of RAGE, a receptor involved in the activation of proinflammatory signaling. Overall, our data suggest that the consumption of nutraceuticals containing different natural compounds could be an adjuvant supplement to counteract proinflammatory and pro-oxidative signals induced by both hyperglycemic and senescence conditions.

"HIIT the Inflammation": Comparative Effects of Low-Volume Interval Training and Resistance Exercises on Inflammatory Indices in Obese Metabolic Syndrome Patients Undergoing Caloric Restriction. Abstract
Exercise is a cornerstone in metabolic syndrome (MetS) treatment. However, the effects of low-volume exercise modalities on MetS-associated low-grade inflammation are unclear. A total of 106 MetS patients (53.7 ± 11.4 years) were randomized to low-volume high-intensity interval training (LOW-HIIT, 14 min/session), single-set resistance training (1-RT, ~15 min/session), whole-body electromyostimulation (WB-EMS, 20 min/session), three-set resistance training (3-RT, ~50 min/session), each performed 2 ×/week for 12 weeks, or a control group (CON). All groups received nutritional counseling for weight loss. Inflammatory and cardiometabolic indices were analyzed pre- and post-intervention. All groups significantly reduced body weight by an average of 3.6%. Only LOW-HIIT reduced C-reactive protein (CRP) (−1.6 mg/L, p = 0.001) and interleukin-6 (−1.1 pg/mL, p = 0.020). High-sensitivity CRP and lipopolysaccharide-binding protein decreased following LOW-HIIT (−1.4 mg/L, p = 0.001 and −2.1 ng/mL, p = 0.004) and 3-RT (−0.6 mg/L, p = 0.044 and −2.0 ng/mL, p < 0.001). MetS severity score improved with LOW-HIIT (−1.8 units, p < 0.001), 1-RT (−1.6 units, p = 0.005), and 3-RT (−2.3 units, p < 0.001). Despite similar effects on body weight, low-volume exercise modalities have different impact on inflammatory and cardiometabolic outcomes in MetS patients. LOW-HIIT has superior efficacy for improving inflammation compared to 1-RT and WB-EMS. Resistance-based exercise appears to require a higher volume to promote beneficial impact on inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic systemic inflammation has been linked to premature mortality and limited somatic as well as mental health with consequences for capability to work and everyday functioning. We recently identified three biochemical clusters of endocrine and immune parameters (C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), fibrinogen, cortisol and creatinine) in participants, age 35-81 years, of the open access Midlife in the United States Study (MIDUS) dataset. These clusters have been validated in an independent cohort of Japanese mid-life adults. Among these clusters, the one characterized by high inflammation coupled with low cortisol and creatinine concentrations was associated with the highest disease burden, referred to as high-risk cluster in the following. The current study aims to further examine the nature of this cluster and specifically whether it predicts mortality and the reported inability to work the last 30 days 10 years after the biomarker assessment. METHODS AND FINDINGS Longitudinally assessed health data from N = 1234 individuals were analyzed in the current study. Logistic regression analyses were performed to predict mortality within one decade after first assessment (T0 = first assessment; T1 = second assessment). General linear models were used to predict the number of days study participants were unable to work due to health issues in the last 30 days (assessed at T1, analyses restricted to individuals <70 years of age). Biological sex, disease burden, and age at T0 were used as covariates in all analyses. Individuals in the previously identified high-risk cluster had a higher risk for mortality (22% of individuals deceased between T0 and T1 versus 10% respectively 9% in the two other clusters). Logistic regression models predicting mortality resulted in a significant difference between individuals from the high-risk cluster compared to those from an identified reference cluster (indicator method, p = .012), independently of age and disease burden. Furthermore, individuals in the high-risk cluster reported a higher number of disability days during the past 30 days (3.4 days in the high-risk cluster versus 1.5 respectively 1.0 days in the reference clusters) assessed at T1. All pairwise comparisons involving the high-risk cluster were significant (all ps < .001). CONCLUSIONS Immune-endocrine profiles are predictive of mortality within the following decade over and above age and disease burden. The findings thus highlight the importance of biomarker-based risk profiling that may provide new targets for interventions in the context of preventive medicine in the transition from health to disease and disease-related mortality.

Abstract
Recent randomized controlled trials have demonstrated a protective association between carotenoids and inflammation; however, the basis of this association on lifestyle factors remains unclear. This study aimed to clarify the associations between carotenoids and inflammatory markers stratified by lifestyle factors, using baseline data from the Mikkabi Study. Serum carotenoid and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels were measured. Multivariable adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for a high hs-CRP level (≥2.0 mg/dL) were obtained using logistic regression analysis. The data of 882 individuals were analyzed; 11.7% had high hs-CRP levels. The highest tertile of lutein (OR: 0.44; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.25–0.76), zeaxanthin (OR: 0.36; 95% CI: 0.21–0.64), total carotenoid (OR: 0.57; 95% CI: 0.32–0.9997), and oxygenated carotenoid concentration (OR: 0.50; 95% CI: 0.28–0.90), with the lowest tertile as reference, was inversely associated with a high hs-CRP level. The interaction between lutein, but not other carotenoids, and current smoking was significant. The inverse association between lutein and a high hs-CRP level was significant in non-smokers (OR: 0.41; 95% CI: 0.22–0.76) but not in smokers. These results further support the anti-inflammatory effect of carotenoids; nevertheless, further studies should clarify the interaction of smoking with the association between lutein and inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease accompanied with itchy and scaly rash. Compound traditional Chinese medicine dermatitis ointment (CTCMDO) consists of a mixture of extracts from five plants, which had been used in AD treatment due to good anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this study, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography/mass spectrometer (LC/MS) were performed to analyze the active ingredients of CTCMDO in detail and to establish its HPLC fingerprint. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory and antipruritic activities of CTCMDO were studied in the treatment of DNCB-induced AD in mice. RESULTS A total of 44 compounds including phenylpropionic acid compounds, alkaloid compounds, curcumin compounds and lignans were identified via combined HPLC and LC/MS. A fingerprint with 17 common peaks was established. In AD-like mice, DNCB-induced scratching behavior had been suppressed in the treatment of CTCMDO in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, the detailed experimental results indicated that the AD can be effectively improved via inhibiting the production of Th1/2 cytokines in serum, reversing the upregulation of substance P levels of itch-related genes in the skin, and suppressing the phosphorylation of JNK, ERK, and p38 in the skin. CONCLUSION This work indicated that CTCMDO can significantly improve AD via attenuating the pathological alterations of Th1/2 cytokines and itch-related mediators, as well as inhibiting the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB).

Abstract
Mediterranean Diet represents the traditional eating habits of populations living around the Mediterranean Sea, and it is associated with a lower risk of overall mortality and cancer incidence and cardiovascular diseases. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 is a new pandemic, and represents a significant and critical threat to global human health. In this study, we aimed to review the possible effects of Mediterranean Diet against the risk of the coronavirus disease 2019. Several vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, and phytochemicals with their potential anti-COVID-19 activity are presented. Different risk factors may increase or reduce the probability of contracting the disease. Mediterranean Diet has also a positive action on inflammation and immune system and could have a protective effect against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Further studies are needed to corroborate the benefits of the Mediterranean Diet protective role on infection with SARS-CoV-2.

Abstract
Extending healthspan is a major public health challenge. Diet is one of the modifiable factors for preventing age-related diseases and preserving overall good health status during aging. Optimizing individuals’ intrinsic capacity, including domains in cognition, psychological, sensory function, vitality, and locomotion, has been proposed as a model of healthy aging by the World Health Organization. To better understand the relationships between a healthy diet and healthy aging, this review summarizes the recent epidemiologic and clinical data for dietary patterns that have been shown to play a role in (domains of) healthy aging. Regardless of priori or posteriori dietary patterns, it appears that dietary patterns centered on plant-based foods have a beneficial role in (domains of) healthy aging. Our review identified a knowledge gap in dietary patterns and multidimensional concepts of healthy aging. More epidemiological studies should consider intrinsic capacity as an outcome measure to further our understanding of a healthy diet and multidimensional concepts of healthy aging. When a sufficient number of epidemiological studies is available, evidence can be synthesized and clinical trials can be designed to evaluate a healthy diet as a strategy for healthy aging to further our progress in translating evidence to practice and promoting healthy aging.

Abstract
With the rising prevalence of Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) worldwide, and the rising cost of treatment with novel biological drugs, there is an increasing interest in various diets and natural foods as a potential way to control/modulate IBD. As recent data indicates that diet can modify the metabolic responses essential for the resolution of inflammation, and as wine compounds have been shown to provide substantial anti-inflammatory effect, in this review we aimed to discuss the current evidence concerning the impact of biological compounds present in wine on IBD. A number of preclinical studies brought forth strong evidence on the mechanisms by which molecules in wine, such as resveratrol or piceatannol, provide their anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative, anti-tumor, and microbiota-modulation effects. However, concerning the effects of alcohol, it is still unclear how the amount of ethanol ingested within the framework of moderate wine consumption (1–2 glasses a day) affects patients with IBD, as human studies regarding the effects of wine on patients with IBD are scarce. Nevertheless, available evidence justifies the conductance of large-scale RCT trials on human subjects that will finally elucidate whether wine can offer real benefits to the IBD population.
