Abstract
BACKGROUND Suicide remains a significant global public health issue. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), suicide was the third leading cause of mortality among individuals aged 15-29 in 2021, with a total of approximately 726,000 cases reported annually. The etiology of suicide is complex, involving a combination of biological, genetic, and environmental factors, as well as family history, gender, age, personality traits, cultural background, geographic location, medical conditions, mental illnesses, addictions, and psychosocial stressors. Dysregulation of the Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal (HPA) axis and the effects of chronic stress play significant roles in the pathophysiology of mood disorders and suicidal behavior. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the levels of Neuropeptide Y (NPY), Orexin, Leptin, and Insulin in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples of individuals who died by suicide compared to those who died from non-suicidal causes. METHOD The study examined 35 cases of suicide by hanging and 35 cases of non-suicidal deaths unrelated to head trauma. Levels of NPY, Orexin, Leptin, and Insulin in CSF samples collected during toxicological examinations were compared between suicide and control groups. RESULTS NPY levels were significantly higher in the suicide group than in the control group (p < 0.001). No statistically significant differences were found in Orexin (p = 0.194), Insulin (p = 0.892), or Leptin (p = 0.445) levels between the groups. CONCLUSIONS While no definitive biomarkers for diagnosing or predicting suicidal behavior exist, this panel of biomarkers could provide valuable insights for developing targeted treatments to manage patients at risk.

Abstract
Aggression and impulsivity are key risk factors for suicide, which remains a public health concern. The heterogeneity of suicidal behaviors, combined with the complexities of aggression and impulsivity, complicates the investigation of their relationship with suicide risk. This review sought to provide a comprehensive overview of the literature examining the relationship between aggression, impulsivity, and suicide. Broadly, individuals with higher levels of aggression and impulsivity were found to be more vulnerable to suicidal behaviors. Stress, the immune system, and neurotransmitters also appeared to affect the relationship between aggression, impulsivity, and suicide. The reactive aggression and proactive aggression subtypes were each found to uniquely contribute to suicide risk. Furthermore, although different facets of impulsivity have varied relationships with suicide risk, self-reported impulsivity did not consistently align with task-driven impulsivity, and distinct facets of task-driven impulsivity demonstrated unique associations with suicide risk. Task-driven impulsivity and reward-based learning, as estimated by reinforcement learning hyperparameters, may provide valuable insights into the potential utility of tasks that assess risk factors in suicide research and their relationship with sensory and emotion regulation in the brain. In addition, neuroimaging studies indicated that decreased cognitive capability and control may be involved in the link between impulsivity and suicide. Collectively, the evidence presented herein highlights the complex interplay between aggression, impulsivity, and suicide. Understanding the underlying genetic, epigenetic, stress, neural, and neurotransmitter factors involved is crucial for developing effective prevention and intervention strategies for individuals at risk of suicide.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Identifying individuals at risk of suicide remains an ongoing challenge. Previous research investigating risk factors for suicidal thoughts and behaviours (STB) has been informative for assessing suicide risk. However, the complex biological, psychological and sociocultural factors underlying STB have not been comprehensively captured to date, which has limited our understanding of how these factors interact to influence STB. Moreover, acute care settings, such as emergency departments (EDs), are often first points of contact for individuals with STB, highlighting a need for more research in these settings. METHODS AND ANALYSIS We aim to (1) characterize a cohort seeking care for STB and their clinical trajectories; (2) situate the cohort by comparing its characteristics and outcomes to other groups seeking emergency care; (3) explore their experiences of seeking care; and (4) examine blood-based biomarkers modulating risk for STB. Using a multimethod, prospective cohort design, we will follow up to 500 people aged 16 or older presenting to the ED with STB at a psychiatric hospital over 1 year. Analyses will involve descriptive statistics and latent profile analysis to characterize the cohort, hypothesis tests and regression models to situate the cohort, qualitative analysis based on a realist research framework to understand experiences, and within-participant comparisons of proteins, mRNA and epigenetic DNA modifications to examine biomarkers of contrasting states of STB. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study was approved by the hospital's Research Ethics Board with safeguards in place to ensure the well-being of participants and research team. An integrated knowledge translation approach will be used for dissemination, wherein patient and family advisors are engaged throughout each study phase. Findings will enhance our understanding of the multifactorial nature of suicide risk, inform strategies for prevention and provide important insights into characteristics, experiences and outcomes of individuals with STB, who are under-represented in mental health research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES We aimed to examine levels of plasma cortisol in the morning and evening before and after standardised treatment, and analyze the correlation between these levels and scores of psychological assessment scales among patients with recurrent depressive disorder (PRDD) in Vietnam. METHODS From January 2020 to December 2021, a cross-sectional study was carried out at the National Institute of Mental Health in Bach Mai Hospital. After using a convenience sampling method, 109 consecutive patients met our criteria were recruited. We measured and analysed plasma cortisol levels in all participants at baseline (T0), two weeks after treatment (T1) and four weeks after treatment (T2). Spearman correlation was applied to assess the correlations between plasma cortisol at six different time and scores of six psychological assessment scales including HAM-D, HAM-A, BDI, SAS, DASS, and MMSE. RESULTS Among 109 PRDD, the percentage of subjects had high cortisol levels decreased during hospital treatment. At admission (T0), these figures were 4.76% in the morning and 8% in the evening. After 4-week treatment (T2), these figures declined to 1.32% and 3.09%, respectively. At T0, the morning cortisol concentrations had a positive correlation with the mean scores of HAM-A (r = 0.257), BDI (r = 0.251), and SAS (r = 0.276) (p ≤ 0.05), whereas the evening cortisol concentrations in the evening had a positive correlation with the mean scores of BDI (r = 0.197), SAS (r = 0.206), and Depression subscale of DASS (r = 0.252) (p ≤ 0.05). At T2, we did not detect any correlation between morning or evening cortisol levels and six test scores. CONCLUSION The utilization of psychological measures for monitoring purposes can facilitate the assessment of alterations in cortisol levels among individuals experiencing recurrent depression, hence aiding in the treatment of depression in this population. Additional investigation using a more extensive sample size is required to furnish additional substantiation on this matter in Vietnam.

Abstract
Suicide continues to be a significant public health issue globally, claiming over 700,000 lives annually. It is, therefore, important to assess the suicide risk properly and provide intervention in a timely fashion. While the heritability of suicidal behavior is around 50%, it does not explain the factors involved in causality. Recent evidence suggests that gene x environment interaction plays a vital role in suicidal behavior. In this paper, we critically evaluate the association between adolescent suicidal behavior and epigenetic modifications, including DNA methylation, histone modification, and non-coding RNAs, as well as epigenetic-based treatment options. It was noted that the prevalence of suicidal behavior in adolescents varied by age and sex and the presence of psychiatric disorders. Childhood adversity was closely associated with suicidal behavior. Studies show that alterations in epigenetic modifications may increase the risk of suicidal behavior independent of mental illnesses. Because epigenetic factors are reversible, environmental enrichment or the use of pharmacological agents that can target specific epigenetic modulation may be able to reduce suicidal behavior in this population.

Abstract
Suicide is defined as the act of a person attempting to take their own life by causing death. Suicide is a complex phenomenon that is influenced by a multitude of factors, including psychosocial, cultural, and religious aspects, as well as genetic, biochemical, and environmental factors. From a biochemical perspective, it is crucial to consider the communication between the endocrine, immune, and nervous systems when studying the etiology of suicide. Several pathologies involve the bidirectional communication between the peripheral activity and the central nervous system by the action of molecules such as cytokines, hormones, and neurotransmitters. These humoral signals, when present in optimal quantities, are responsible for maintaining physiological homeostasis, including mood states. Stress elevates the cortisol and proinflammatory cytokines levels and alter neurotransmitters balance, thereby increasing the risk of developing a psychiatric disorder and subsequently the risk of suicidal behavior. This review provides an integrative perspective about the neurochemical, immunological, and endocrinological disturbances associated with suicidal behavior, with a particular focus on those alterations that may serve as potential risk markers and/or indicators of the state preceding such a tragic act.

Abstract
PURPOSE Pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to experiencing mental health difficulties, especially anxiety. Anxiety in pregnancy can be characterized as having two components: general symptomology experienced in the general population, and pregnancy-related anxiety more focused on pregnancy, delivery, and the future child. In addition, women also commonly report experiencing attentional control and self-regulation difficulties across the peripartum period. However, links between anxiety and neural and cognitive functioning in pregnancy remain unclear. The present study investigated whether anxiety is associated with neural markers of attention and self-regulation measured using electroencephalography (EEG). Specifically, we examined associations between general and pregnancy-related anxiety and (1) beta oscillations, a neural marker of attentional processing; and (2) the coupling of beta and delta oscillations, a neural marker of self-regulation, in frontal and prefrontal regions. METHODS A sample of 135 women in the third trimester of their pregnancy completed a resting-state EEG session. RESULTS General anxiety was associated with increased beta oscillations, in line with research in the general population, interpreted as reflecting hyperarousal. Pregnancy-related anxiety was associated with decreased beta oscillations, interpreted as reflecting inattention and mind-wandering. Moreover, pregnancy-related anxiety, but not general anxiety, was linked to stronger delta-beta coupling, suggesting anxiety specifically related to the pregnancy is associated with investing greater effort in self-regulation. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that general and pregnancy-related anxiety may differentially relate to neural patterns underlying attention and self-regulation in pregnancy.

Abstract
Previous studies reported that depressive symptoms were associated with a high risk of all-cause mortality. However, the effect of different long-term depressive symptom trajectory patterns on the risk of all-cause mortality has not been evaluated. Our research aimed to explore the association between different depressive symptom trajectories and the risk of all-cause mortality in Chinese adults. The data we used were from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. In total, 13,624 subjects aged over 45 years were ultimately included in the analysis. Group-based trajectory modeling was used to identify the different trajectories of depressive symptoms. The multivariable Cox regression model was used to examine the association between long-term depressive symptom trajectories and all-cause mortality. The results show that a total of five depressive symptom trajectories were identified in our study, including stable-low, stable-moderate, increasing, decreasing and stable-high. Compared with individuals in the stable-low depressive symptom trajectories group, those in the increasing and stable-high trajectory groups possessed a greater mortality rate, with a multivariable-adjusted hazard ratio (95% CIs) for mortality were 1.30 (1.06, 1.60) and 1.59 (1.26, 2.02), respectively. In addition, we have not identified the significant risk of all-cause mortality in people with decreased and stable-moderate symptom trajectories. Moreover, the risk of all-cause mortality had an increasing trend among the different trajectory groups. In the sensitivity analysis, the association was robust in most of the subgroups. In conclusion, people with increasing and persistent higher depressive symptom trajectories were associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality.

Abstract
The high comorbidity of major depressive disorder (MDD) with other diseases has been well-documented. However, the pairwise causal connections for MDD comorbid networks are poorly characterized. We performed Phenome-wide Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses to explore bidirectional causal associations between MDD (N = 807,553) and 877 common diseases from FinnGen datasets (N = 377,277). The inverse variance weighting method was the primary technique, and other methods (weighted median and MR-Egger) were used for sensitivity analyses. Our MR analyses showed that the genetic liability to MDD is causally associated with the risks of 324 disease phenotypes (average b: 0.339), including 46 psychiatric and behavioral disorders (average b: 0.618), 18 neurological diseases (average b: 0.348), 44 respiratory diseases (average b: 0.345), 40 digestive diseases (average b: 0.281), 18 circulatory diseases (average b: 0.237), 37 genitourinary diseases (average b: 0.271), 66 musculoskeletal and connective diseases (average b: 0.326), 22 endocrine diseases (average b: 0.302), and others. In a reverse analysis, a total of 51 genetic components predisposing to various diseases were causally associated with MDD risk (average b: 0.086), including 5 infectious diseases (average b: 0.056), 11 neurological diseases (average b: 0.106), 14 oncological diseases (average b: 0.108), and 5 psychiatric and behavioral disorders (average b: 0.114). Bidirectional causal associations were identified between MDD and 15 diseases. For most MR analyses, little evidence of heterogeneity and pleiotropy was detected. Our findings confirmed the extensive and significant causal role of genetic predisposition to MDD in contributing to human disease phenotypes, which were more pronounced than those seen in the reverse analysis of the causal influences of other diseases on MDD.

Abstract
Genes involved in regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, including the glucocorticoid receptor (GR), are linked to various stress-related psychopathologies including bipolar disorder as well as other mood and trauma-related disorders. The protein product of the cell cycle gene, SKA2, is a GR interaction partner in peripheral cells. However, the precise roles of SKA2 in stress and GR signaling in the brain, specifically in nonreplicating postmitotic neurons, and its involvement in HPA axis regulation remain unclear. Here, we demonstrate, using diverse in vitro cell assays, a mechanism by which SKA2 promotes GR signaling through enhancing GR-FKBP4 interaction leading to dissociation of FK506-bindingprotein 51 (FKBP5) from the complex. FKBP4 and FKBP5 are cochaperones known to regulate GR function in opposite directions. Notably in mice, SKA2 in Crh+ neurons of the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus is crucial for HPA axis responsiveness and for maintaining the negative feedback loop underlying allostasis. Moreover, we show that SKA2 expression is increased in postmortem human hippocampus and amygdala from individuals with BD. Our study highlights a critical role of SKA2 in HPA axis function, adds to the understanding of the molecular basis of stress-related psychiatric disorders, and points to potential targets for intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Screening for depression can be challenging among hemodialysis patients due to the overlap of depressive symptoms with dialysis or kidney disease related symptoms. The aim of this study was to understand these overlapping symptoms and develop a depression screening tool for better clinical assessment of depressive symptoms in dialysis patients. METHODS We surveyed 1,085 dialysis patients between March 1, 2018 and February 28, 2023 at 15 dialysis facilities in Northeast Ohio with the 9-item patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9) and kidney disease quality of life (KDQOL) instrument. To evaluate overlap across questionnaire items, we used structural equation modeling (SEM). We predicted and transformed factor scores to create a hemodialysis-adjusted PHQ-9 (hdPHQ-9). In exploratory analysis (N = 173), we evaluated the performance of the hdPHQ-9 relative to the PHQ-9 that also received a Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. RESULTS Our study sample included a high percentage of Black patients (74.6%) and 157 (14.5%) survey participants screened positive for depression (PHQ-9 ≥ 10). The magnitude of overlap was small for (respectively, PHQ-9 item with KDQOLTM item) fatigue with washed out, guilt with burden on family, appetite with nausea and movement with lightheaded. The hdPHQ-9 showed reasonably high sensitivity (0.81 with 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.58, 0.95) and specificity (0.84 with 95% CI 0.77, 0.89); however, this was not a significant improvement from the PHQ-9. CONCLUSION There is little overlap between depressive symptoms and dialysis or kidney disease symptoms. The PHQ-9 was found to be an appropriate depression screening instrument for dialysis patients.

Abstract
Deaths due to external causes, mainly suicide, are a severe public health problem in Brazil. Evidence shows that the tendency to impulsive behavior is exacerbated after alcohol consumption. The relationship between alcohol and suicide is poorly described in the medical literature. The study aims to analyze the relationship between victims' blood alcohol levels and suicides in some municipalities in Greater São Paulo, Brazil. We reviewed the data from the medical records of 805 necropsies performed at the Medical Legal Institute of Sao Paulo in Franco da Rocha, Brazil, from 2001 to 2017. The manner of death was established based on the result of police inquiry. Deaths due to suicide (n=41) were selected for the study. Descriptive statistics and Student t-test was applied when appropriate. The variables studied were sex, age, suicide mechanism, and blood alcohol level (BAC). In all cases we could not determine how much time the deceased consumed alcohol before suicide. Of the individuals analyzed, 85.36% were male, and 14.64% were female. The most prevalent age range for males was between 18 and 23 (19.5%). For females, it was between 12 and 23 years (33.2%). Most suicides (48.78%) were due to hanging, followed by self-poisoning (22.08%) and firearms (17.1%). 38 victims (92.68%) presented a positive BAC, over 0.3 mg/dl. The higher levels were in the group of suicide by hanging (2.3 mg/ml). Thus, alcohol intoxication is common among suicide victims, and it can contribute to the fatal outcome as a risk factor. Further studies are necessary for a better comprehension of the effect of alcohol on suicide victims.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Poor sleep quality is a known contributor to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. This study examines whether sleep quality modulates the effect of an individual's stress response and risk/reward-based decision making on suicide risk. METHODS Participants were 160 adults at a residential substance use treatment facility with lifetime exposure to trauma who completed a clinician-administered measure of suicide risk, the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), and a self-report measure of sleep. Cortisol reactivity (i.e., changes in cortisol before and after a personalized trauma script) was used to measure stress response. We used quantile regression to examine the effects of sleep, cortisol, and risk/reward decision-making on suicide risk. RESULTS We found poor sleep quality to be increasingly salient in individuals at greater risk for suicide than those at lower risk for suicide. Furthermore, individuals with moderate to moderate-high levels of suicide risk seem to have greater cortisol reactivity. In the low-moderate quantile, we found suicide risk to be associated with both high stress reactivity and low-risk, high-reward decision-making, as well as low stress reactivity and high-risk/low-reward decision-making. LIMITATIONS These findings should be interpreted considering several methodological constraints, such as the use of a pre-determined sample and instruments not tailored for our hypotheses, the MINI 'Suicide' Module's limited differentiation between suicidal ideation and behavior, and variably timed cortisol sampling. CONCLUSIONS Despite these limitations, the findings from this study support the use of evidence-based interventions focused on improving sleep quality and managing emotional reactivity to decrease suicide risk.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is highly prevalent among adolescents. However, knowledge about the possible factors that might precede and influence its development remains scarce. OBJECTIVE Our goal is to examine the impact of adverse childhood events, and more specifically of different types of childhood maltreatment (CM) in adolescent NSSI. This involves performing a systematic review and meta-analysis of the different CM subtypes (physical and emotional neglect, physical and emotional abuse, sexual abuse) in clinical and non-clinical samples of adolescents with NSSI. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS A digital search of the PsycInfo, PubMed and Web of Science platforms for articles published up to June 2022 was performed. The search terms were "self harm", "non-suicidal self-injury", "childhood maltreatment" and "adolescents". RESULTS Forty-six articles that fit the research objectives were included in the study, which covered a total of 1,505,430 adolescents, of whom 560,337 belonged to the NSSI group, while 945,093 were in the control group. The results describe strong positive associations between all CM subtypes and NSSI, especially with emotional abuse (odds ratio [OR] 2.91, 95 % CI 2.37-3.56) and sexual abuse (OR 2.72, 95 % CI 2.12-3.48), in clinical and non-clinical samples of adolescents. CONCLUSIONS The experience of CM, and especially emotional and/or sexual abuse, seems to be associated with a greater risk of developing NSSI in adolescence. Therefore, early identification and detection of children who have suffered or are suffering these forms of CM are of vital importance for instigating psychotherapeutic treatments that can minimize the risk of developing NSSI in adolescence.

Abstract
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a chronic, burdensome, highly prevalent disease that is characterized by depressed mood and anhedonia. MDD is especially burdensome as approved monoamine antidepressant treatments have weeks-long delays before clinical benefit and low remission rates. In the past 2 decades, a promising target emerged to improve patient outcomes in depression treatment: glutamatergic signaling. This narrative review provides a high-level overview of glutamate signaling in synaptogenesis and neural plasticity and the implications of glutamate dysregulation in depression. Based on this preclinical evidence implicating glutamate in depression and the rapid improvement of depression with ketamine treatment in a proof-of-concept trial, a range of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-targeted therapies have been investigated. While an array of treatments has been investigated in registered phase 2 or 3 clinical trials, the development of most of these agents has been discontinued. Multiple glutamate-targeted antidepressants are actively in development, and two are approved. Nasal administration of esketamine (Spravato®) was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2019 to treat adults with treatment-resistant depression and in 2020 for adults with MDD with acute suicidal ideation or behavior. Oral combination dextromethorphan-bupropion (AXS-05, Auvelity® extended-release tablet) was FDA approved in 2022 for the treatment of MDD in adults. These approvals bolster the importance of glutamate in depression and represent an exciting breakthrough in contemporary psychiatry, providing new avenues of treatment for patients as first-line therapy or with either poor response or unacceptable side effects to monoaminergic antidepressants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Suicidal behavior constitutes a multi-cause phenomenon that may also be present in people without a mental disorder. This study aims to analyze suicidal behavior outcomes in a sample of attempters, from a symptom-based approach. METHODS The sample comprised 673 patients (72% female; M = 40.9 years) who attended a hospital emergency department due to a suicide attempt. A wide range of clinical factors (e.g., psychopathology symptoms, psychiatric diagnoses, impulsivity, acquired capability), was administered within 15 days after the index attempt. Nine psychopathology domains were explored to identify the profile of symptoms, using latent profile analysis. The relationship between the profile membership and suicide outcome (i.e., intensity of suicidal ideation, number of suicide behaviors, and medical injury derived from index attempt) was also studied, using linear and logistic regression. RESULTS Three psychopathology profiles were identified: high-symptom profile (45.02% of participants), moderate-symptom profile (42.50%), and low-symptom profile (12.48%). High-symptom profile members were more likely to show higher risk of non-suicidal self-injury, acquired capability for suicide, and more severe suicide behavior and ideation. On the other hand, a more severe physical injury was associated with low-symptom profile membership in comparison to membership from the other profiles (OR < 0.45, p < .05). CONCLUSIONS A symptom-based approach may be useful to monitor patients and determine the risk of attempt repetition in the future and potential medical injury, and to optimize prevention and intervention strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between suicidality and resilience is underexplored among the general population. This study aimed to explore the relationship between lifetime, one-year, and one-month prevalence of suicidality (ideation, plan, attempt) and resilience in the general population. METHODS Data on suicidality, resilience, prevalence of major mental disorders, and other key psychological factors were collected from the National Mental Health Survey of Korea 2021. Interviewees comprised 5511 South Koreans aged 18-79 years. The contribution of resilience to suicidality was evaluated using Rao-Scot logistic regression, adjusting for possible confounders such as mental disorder prevalence and demographic and psychological characteristics. RESULTS Significantly lower resilience levels were noted among participants who reported lifetime, one-year, and one-month suicidal ideation, plan, or attempts. High resilience levels predicted no suicidal ideation, plans, and attempts in the lifetime, and no suicidal ideation and plans in the one-year and one-month time frames. LIMITATIONS First, this study's cross-sectional design has limitations for ascertaining a causal relationship between resilience and suicidality. Second, because the number of participants who had attempted suicide in the past year and reported suicidal thoughts/attempts in the past month was small, there were limitations in the analysis of suicidality in these time frames. Third, it was difficult to rule out the mediating effects of personality and temperament on the relationship between resilience and suicidality. CONCLUSIONS High resilience levels predicted lower lifetime and current suicidal ideation and suicidal planning in the general population. This study shows that psychological resilience is an important factor in evaluating an individual's current suicidality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Immune-inflammatory pathways in major depressive disorder are confined to the major dysmood disorder (MDMD) phenotype (Maes et al., 2022). No studies have addressed the immune profile of first episode MDMD (FE-MDMD). METHODS This study investigated the immune profiles of 71 patients with the acute phase of first-episode major depressive disorder (FE-MDMD) and 40 healthy controls. We measured 48 cytokines/chemokines/growth factors, classical M1, alternative M2, T helper (Th)-1, Th-2, and Th-17 phenotypes, immune-inflammatory response system (IRS), compensatory immunoregulatory system (CIRS), and neuro-immunotoxicity profiles. RESULTS FE-MDMD patients show significantly activated M1, M2, Th-1, IRS, CIRS, and neurotoxicity, but not Th-2 or Th-17, profiles compared to controls. FE-MDMD is accompanied by Th-1 polarization, while there are no changes in M1/M2 or IRS/CIRS ratios. The top single indicator of FE-MDMD was by far interleukin (IL)-16, followed at a distance by TRAIL, IL-2R, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-β. The severity of depression and anxiety was strongly associated with IRS (positively) and Th-2 (inversely) profiles, whereas suicidal behavior was associated with M1 activation. Around 56-60% of the variance in depression, anxiety, and suicidal behavior scores was explained by IL-16, platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) (both positively), and IL-1 receptor antagonist (inversely). Increased neurotoxicity is mainly driven by IL-16, TNF-α, TRAIL, IL-6, and chemokine (CCL2, CCL11, CXCL1, CXCL10) signaling. Antidepressant-treated patients show an increased IRS/CIRS ratio as compared with drug-naïve FE-MDMD patients. CONCLUSIONS FE-MDMD is accompanied by positive regulation of the IRS mainly driven by Th-1 polarization and T cell activation (via binding of IL-16 to CD4), and TNF, chemokine, and growth factor signaling.

Abstract
Concepts of suicide are explored in this issue with a focus on suicide in children and adolescents. The epidemiology of pediatric suicide in the United States is reviewed; also, risk and protective factors, as well as prevention strategies, are discussed. Suicide in the pediatric athlete and the potential protective effect of exercise are examined. In addition, this analysis addresses the beneficial role of psychological management as well as current research on pharmacologic treatment and brain stimulation procedures as part of comprehensive pediatric suicide prevention. Though death by suicide in pediatric persons has been and remains a tragic phenomenon, there is much that clinicians, other healthcare professionals, and society itself can accomplish in the prevention of pediatric suicide as well as the management of suicidality in our children and adolescents.

Abstract
It appears that the THC dosage is the link between dysregulation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis and suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STB). We proposed a new model to understand the underlying pathophysiological mechanism of STB based on the interaction of cortisol and THC dosage. From September 1, 2019, to January 1, 2024, we conducted a population-based, matched-pair, nested case-control study resulting from a three-wave complete longitudinal, multicenter cohort study on a sample of congress 60 clients. A total of 368 male continued cannabis users (CCu) were allocated to four categories, including low, moderate and high THC dosages and relapse, using optimal matching. Several HPA axis measures were analyzed in the saliva using liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS), and carboxylic acids levels in the urine were assessed via gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS). We used structural equation modeling (SEM) to examine the relationship between the variables of interest and the model fit test, and used the Akaike information criterion (AIC) to compare the model fit and select the best-fitting model. Population attributable fractions (PAFs) and cumulative risk score were also calculated for the best-fitting pattern. The analysis showed that the likelihood of STB in individuals with a cortisol awakening response (CAR) and a blunted diurnal cortisol slope (DCS) and higher area under the curve (AUC) who reported heavy cannabis use was more than three times higher than the control group (OR 3.2, 95 % CI 2.4-4.1). These findings indicate the importance of the specific cortisol secretion pattern in the increased clinical expression of STB and may be an important factor for guiding preventive efforts in this area.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To emphasize the necessity for increased research in this field, incorporating depression into the preventative, diagnostic, and therapeutic considerations for asthma. Additionally, we seek to highlight upcoming advancements that can be applied to simultaneously address these comorbidities, ultimately improving the overall well-being and quality of life for individuals coping with these conditions. METHODS A rigorous search in PubMed using the MeSH terms "asthma" and "depression" was performed, and papers were screened by the authors in view of their eligibility to contribute to the study. RESULTS There exists a correlation between these two conditions, with specific biological mechanisms and genetic factors playing a crucial role in their concurrent occurrence. In this review, we present preclinical and clinical research data, shed light on the possible mechanisms contributing to the co-occurrence of symptoms associated with both asthma and depression, and explore the intricate relationship between both conditions. CONCLUSION The evidence presented here supports the existence of a correlation between asthma and depression. By acknowledging these shared biological mechanisms, genetic factors, and epidemiological trends, we can formulate more efficacious strategies for addressing the dual impact of asthma and depression.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Insomnia and anxiety symptoms are independent clinical variables involved in suicidal ideation in psychiatric inpatients. In this article, we investigated the relationship among insomnia severity, severity of anxiety symptoms, and suicidal ideation in a sample of psychiatric inpatients with severe mental disorders. We used a mediation model considering insomnia severity as the possible mediator of the relationship between anxiety severity and suicidal ideation. We administered the Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale, the Insomnia Severity Index, and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale to 116 consecutive inpatients to the psychiatric unit of Sant'Andrea Hospital in Rome. The effect of anxiety symptoms was mediated by insomnia severity; patients who perceive higher anxiety symptoms were more likely to experience higher levels of insomnia and, thus, higher suicidal ideation intensity. Results showed the importance of assessing and treating both insomnia and anxiety in clinical practice.

Abstract
Background Suicide is a significant public health problem influenced by various risk factors, including dysregulation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. Zinc (Zn), essential for pituitary function in hormone synthesis and release, has been linked to suicide, with studies noting reduced serum levels and altered brain transport mechanisms. Despite Zn's crucial role in pituitary function and its involvement in suicidal behavior, information on pituitary Zn in suicide is scarce. Tumor cells modify Zn dynamics in tissues, and a previous report suggests microadenomas in the anterior pituitary as a risk factor for suicide. Methods Histopathological analysis with hematoxylin-eosin stain and histochemical techniques to assess Zn homeostasis were carried out on anterior pituitary postmortem samples from 14 suicide completers and 9 non-suicidal cases. Results Pituitary microadenomas were identified in 35% of suicide cases and none in the non-suicidal cases. Furthermore, compartmentalized Zn (detected via dithizone reactivity), but not free Zn levels (detected via zinquin reactivity), was lower in the suicide cases compared to the non-suicidal group. Conclusion This is the first report of a potential association between disrupted Zn homeostasis and microadenomas in the anterior pituitary as a feature in suicide and provides critical insights for future neuroendocrine Zn-related research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a clear demand for innovative therapeutics for bipolar disorder (BD). METHODS We integrated the largest BD genome-wide association study (GWAS) dataset (NCase = 41 917, NControl = 371 549) with protein quantitative trait loci from brain, cerebrospinal fluid, and plasma. Using a range of integrative analyses, including Mendelian randomization (MR), Steiger filter analysis, Bayesian colocalization, and phenome-wide MR analysis, we prioritized novel drug targets for BD. Additionally, we incorporated data from the UK Biobank (NCase = 1064, NControl = 365 476) and the FinnGen study (NCase = 7006, NControl = 329 192) for robust biological validation. RESULTS Through MR analysis, we found that in the brain, downregulation of DNM3, MCTP1, ABCB8 and elevation of DFNA5 and PDF were risk factors for BD. In cerebrospinal fluid, increased BD risk was associated with increased levels of FRZB, AGRP, and IL36A and decreased CTSF and LRP8. Plasma analysis revealed that decreased LMAN2L, CX3CL1, PI3, NCAM1, and TIMP4 correlated with increased BD risk, but ITIH1 did not. All these proteins passed Steiger filtering, and Bayesian colocalization confirmed that 12 proteins were colocalized with BD. Phenome-wide MR analysis revealed no significant side effects for potential drug targets, except for LRP8. External validation further underscored the concordance between the primary and validation cohorts, confirming MCTP1, DNM3, PDF, CTSF, AGRP, FRZB, LMAN2L, NCAM1, and TIMP4 are intriguing targets for BD. CONCLUSIONS Our study identified druggable proteins for BD, including MCTP1, DNM3, and PDF in the brain; CTSF, AGRP, and FRZB in cerebrospinal fluid; and LMAN2L, NCAM1, and TIMP4 in plasma, delineating promising avenues to development of novel therapies.

Abstract
Suicide is considered one of the major public health problems worldwide, being the second leading cause of death in the 15-29 age group. It is estimated that every 40s someone in the world commits suicide. The social taboo surrounding this phenomenon as well as the fact that suicide prevention measures currently fail to avoid deaths from this cause, means that more research is needed to understand its mechanisms. The present narrative review on suicide tries to point out several important aspects, such as risk factors or the dynamics of suicide, as well as the current findings in the field of physiology that could offer advances in the understanding of suicide. Subjective measures of risk such as scales and questionnaires are not effective alone, whereas the objective measures can be addressed from physiology. Thus, an increased neuroinflammation in people who take their own lives has been found, with an increase in inflammatory markers such as interleukin-6 and other cytokines in plasma or cerebrospinal fluid. Also, the hyperactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and a decrease in serotonin or in vitamin D levels seems to also be involved. In conclusion, this review could help to understand which factors can trigger an increased risk of dying by suicide, as well as pointing out those alterations that occur in the body when someone attempt to commit suicide or succeeds in taking their own life. There is a need for more multidisciplinary approaches that address suicide to help to raise awareness of the relevance of this problem that causes the death of thousands of people every year.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disturbance and impulsivity are key components of mood vulnerability in bipolar disorder (BD), but few studies have assessed the association between these two symptoms among patients with BD. METHODS Forty-seven euthymic patients with bipolar I disorder (BDI) or bipolar II disorder (BDII) and 58 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Trait impulsivity was measured using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale Version 11 (BIS-11), which yielded 3 second-order factors: attention, motor, and non-planning. Subjective sleep quality was assessed using the self-reported Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). General linear models (GLMs) were used to assess the associations between subjective poor sleep and trait impulsivity with multiple testing corrections. RESULTS Patients with BD scored higher in BIS-11 and PSQI than healthy controls. PSQI total scores positively correlated with BIS-11 total scores, while sleep disturbance and daytime dysfunction were associated with attentional impulsiveness after controlling for covariates. Participants with higher PSQI total scores (>10) had higher scores in BIS-11 total, attention, and non-planning than those with low PSQI scores (≤5). CONCLUSION These findings support the hypothesis that poor sleep quality might lead to impulsivity and add to the growing evidence that improving sleep quality may be a therapeutic target for patients with BD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adolescents often experience a heightened incidence of depressive symptoms, which can persist without early intervention. However, adolescents often struggle to identify depressive symptoms, and even when they are aware of these symptoms, seeking help is not always their immediate response. This study aimed to explore the relationship between passively collected digital data, specifically keystroke and stylus data collected via mobile devices, and the manifestation of depressive symptoms. METHODS A total of 927 first-year middle school students from schools in Seoul solved Korean language and math problems. Throughout this study, 77 types of keystroke and stylus data were collected, including parameters such as the number of key presses, tap pressure, stroke speed, and stroke acceleration. Depressive symptoms were measured using the self-rated Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). RESULTS Multiple regression analysis highlighted the significance of stroke length, speed, and acceleration, the average y-coordinate, the tap pressure, and the number of incorrect answers in relation to PHQ-9 scores. The keystroke and stylus metadata were able to reflect mood, energy, cognitive abilities, and psychomotor symptoms among adolescents with depressive symptoms. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates the potential of automatically collected data during school exams or classes for the early screening of clinical depressive symptoms in students. This study has the potential to serve as a cornerstone in the development of digital data frameworks for the early detection of depressive symptoms in adolescents.

Abstract
Introduction Suicidal ideation, an important risk factor for suicide attempts, has an unclear neurobiological basis and is potentially linked to the dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and immune-inflammatory systems. While inflammatory markers have been associated with suicide attempts and, to a lower extent suicidal ideation, the data on the role of a stress-response system is less robust, with most studies carried out with cortisol showing inconsistent results. The present study extends on the previous studies implicating stress-response and immune-inflammatory systems in suicidal thoughts and behaviours, focusing on the associations of several stress-response (adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)) and immune-inflammatory (C-reactive protein (CRP),interle ukin-6 (IL-6), and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha)) with suicidal ideation severity in recent suicide attempters, patients with major depressive disorder, and non-psychiatric controls. Methods This observational study included 156 adults from three Vilnius hospitals, recruited into one of the three groups in equal parts: recent suicide attempters, patients with major depressive disorder in current depressive episode, and non-psychiatric controls. Measures included the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS-17) and the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation/Suicide Severity Index (BSS/SSI), alongside sociodemographic data, alcohol, tobacco use, and morning blood samples, measuring plasma ACTH, cortisol, DHEA, CRP, and IL-6. Data were analysed with non-parametric tests, Kendall's tau correlation, and multivariate linear regression adjusted for confounders. Results We found a negative correlation between the plasma ACTH levels and suicidal ideation severity (tau = -0.130, p = 0.033), which was driven by the patients with major depressive disorder (tau = -0.237, p = 0.031). Suicidal ideation severity was also negatively correlated with TNF-alpha (tau = -0.231; p < 0.001), positively correlated with IL-6 (tau = 0.154, p = 0.015), and CRP levels (tau = 0.153, p = 0.015), but no differences were observed in group-stratified analyses. The association between plasma ACTH levels and suicidal ideation severity in patients with major depressive disorder remained robust to adjustment for major confounders (adjusted for age, sex, education years, body mass index, smoking status, plasma CRP and PEth concentration (measuring chronic alcohol exposure), and antidepressant use) in the linear regression model (t = -2.71, p = 0.011), as well as additionally adjusting for depression severity (t = -2.99, p = 0.006). Discussion The present study shows an association between plasma ACTH levels and suicidal ideation severity in patients with major depressive disorder, robust to adjustment for antidepressant use and depression severity. This finding highlights the potential role of ACTH, in elucidating the effects of stress and mental health disorders. Our findings underscore the importance of the HPA axis in the diagnosis and treatment of suicidal ideation in major depressive disorder and invite further research on interventions targeting this pathway.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent research has explored the linkage between major depressive disorder (MDD) and inflammation, especially via altered peripheral blood immune markers. However, the relationship between several novel leukocyte-derived ratios (LDR) and psychological stress in MDD remains uncertain. This study aimed to explore the relationship between LDR, clinical characteristics, recent life events, and childhood maltreatment in MDD patients. METHODS A cross-sectional case-control study was conducted involving 59 healthy controls (HC) and 50 unmedicated MDD patients. Subjects underwent psychological assessments and peripheral blood measurements. LDR assessed in this study included neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), derived NLR (dNLR), monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), white blood cell-to-mean platelet volume ratio (WMR), systemic immune inflammation index (SII), multiplication of neutrophil and monocyte counts (MNM), and systemic inflammation response index (SIRI). RESULTS MDD patients displayed significant alterations in WMR, PLR, and MNM compared to HC, as well as correlations between several LDR and various clinical features (duration of untreated psychosis and dNLR, the nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire and PLR, the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Questionnaire and SIRI (NLR and dNLR). There was a significant difference in the comparison of WMR in first-episode patients than in recurrent patients. Analyses further revealed an association between Life Event Scale total scores and NLR (dNLR). No correlation was found between Childhood Trauma Questionnaire total (or subscale) scores and LDR. Additionally, WMR and dNLR presented potential predictive value for distinguishing between MDD and HC. CONCLUSION The study concludes that MDD and some clinical features are associated with alterations in some peripheral blood LDR. These findings emphasize the potential role of peripheral blood LDR in the pathogenesis and clinical heterogeneity of MDD.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to explore the associations between homocysteine, rumination, affective temperaments, clinical features, and hopelessness in bipolar disorder-1 (BD-1). MATERIALS AND METHODS In total, 57 euthymic patients with BD-1 and 57 healthy controls were included. The Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego-Autoquestionnaire (TEMPS-A), and Ruminative Responses Scale Short Form (RRS-SF) were administered. Homocysteine, folate, and vitamin B12 levels were measured. RESULTS The BHS total (p = 0.047), TEMPS-A irritable (p = 0.007), and TEMPS-A cyclothymic (p= 0.001) scores were significantly higher than the control group in the BD-1 group. Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) was found in 33.3% of the patients (n = 19). In the HHcy group, age of onset of disease (p = 0.020) was significantly lower than the non-HHcy group in patients. Previous suicide attempt number was significantly correlated with scores of reflective pondering, brooding, and global rumination in BD-1 (p ˂ 0.05). Except for hyperthymic temperament, all types of affective temperaments were correlated with the scores of RRS-SF brooding (p ˂ 0.05) in the BD-1 group. The RRS-SF brooding scores significantly correlated with the BHS total scores (r = 0.263, p < 0.05); the TEMPS-A hyperthymic (β = -0.351, p = 0.001) and TEMPS-A irritable (β = 0.536, p < 0.001) scores significantly predicted the BHS total scores in the BD-1 group. CONCLUSIONS The findings may lead clinical efforts and future clinical trials to explore and intervene in related sources and presentations of BD-1's adverse consequences.

Abstract
Hypothyroidism is a prevalent thyroid condition in which the thyroid gland fails to secrete an adequate amount of thyroid hormone into the bloodstream. This condition may develop due to genetic or acquired factors. The most frequent cause of acquired hypothyroidism is chronic autoimmune thyroiditis, also known as Hashimoto's disease. Acquired hypothyroidism is diagnosed when patients present with overt hypothyroidism (also known as clinical hypothyroidism), as they exhibit increased TSH and decreased T3 and T4 serum levels. This article examines the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among patients diagnosed with acquired hypothyroidism with or without Levothyroxine treatment. We discuss the available evidence indicating that acquired hypothyroidism may be a risk factor for psychiatric disorders, and the effectiveness of thyroid treatment in relieving psychiatric symptoms. Additionally, we provide critical details on thyroid hormone cutoff values reported in the literature, their potential clinical importance, and their correlation with psychiatric symptoms. Finally, we examined the various mechanisms by which acquired hypothyroidism can lead to depression. The high rate of comorbidity between hypothyroidism and psychiatric disorders deserves special attention, indicating the importance of consistent monitoring and timely identification of psychiatric symptoms to prevent disease exacerbation and facilitate therapeutic management. On the other hand, several mechanisms underlie the strong association between depression and acquired hypothyroidism. Deeper research into these mechanisms will allow knowledge of the pathophysiology of depression in patients with acquired hypothyroidism and will provide clues to design more precise therapeutic strategies for these patients.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of the present study was to examine the inflammation markers of patients who have attempted suicide by comparing them with those of healthy controls. The leukocyte cell levels, Neutrophil/Lymphocyte Ratios (NLR), Basophil/Lymphocyte Ratios (BLR), Platelet/Lymphocyte Ratios (PLR), Monocyte/Lymphocyte Ratios (MLR), Systemic Inflammation Index (SII), Neutrophil/Albumin Ratios (NAR) values were compared with those of healthy controls. METHOD A total of 376 people were included in the study (276 patients who attempted suicide, and 100 healthy people (the control group)). The demographic data and laboratory parameters of the participants were analyzed from the hospital automation system. RESULTS The participants' female/male ratio was 158/118 (42.8%/57.1%) in the group of patients who attempted suicide and 41/59 (41/59%) in the control group. When the distribution of laboratory parameters was evaluated, although the NLR, BLR, NAR, SII, and MLR values, which are indicators of peripheral inflammation, were high in patients who attempted suicide (p = 0.049 for MLR, p = 0.000 for other values), the PLR (p = 0.586) value did not differ significantly between the groups. Patients who had attempted more than one suicide had elevated BLR (p = 0.007), SII (p = 0.003), and NAR (p = 0.003) values. DISCUSSION Based on the results obtained, it was considered that paying attention to inflammation parameters in patient follow-ups, and monitoring of SII, NLR, BLR, and NAR values of patients who had attempted suicide once would be beneficial in preventing future suicide attempts. These results strengthen the idea that inflammatory processes play roles in the pathophysiology of suicidal behavior. However, further studies are needed to elucidate the complex pathophysiological mechanisms of immune pathways underlying suicidal behavior.

Abstract
Individuals with depression have the highest lifetime prevalence of suicide attempts (SA) among mental illnesses. Numerous neuroimaging studies have developed biomarkers from task-related neural activation in depressive patients with SA, but the findings are inconsistent. Empowered by the contemporary interconnected view of depression as a neural system disorder, we sought to identify a specific brain circuit utilizing published heterogeneous neural activations. We systematically reviewed all published cognitive and emotional task-related functional MRI studies that investigated differences in the location of neural activations between depressive patients with and without SA. We subsequently mapped an underlying brain circuit functionally connecting to each experimental activation using a large normative connectome database (n = 1000). The identified SA-related functional network was compared to the network derived from the disease control group. Finally, we decoded this convergent functional connectivity network using microscale transcriptomic and chemo-architectures, and macroscale psychological processes. We enrolled 11 experimental tasks from eight studies, including depressive patients with SA (n = 147) and without SA (n = 196). The heterogeneous SA-related neural activations localized to the somato-cognitive action network (SCAN), exhibiting robustness to little perturbations and specificity for depression. Furthermore, the SA-related functional network was colocalized with brain-wide gene expression involved in inflammatory and immunity-related biological processes and aligned with the distribution of the GABA and noradrenaline neurotransmitter systems. The findings demonstrate that the SA-related functional network of depression is predominantly located at the SCAN, which is an essential implication for understanding depressive patients with SA.

Abstract
There is a dearth of studies on neuroimaging correlates of Bipolar Disorder (BD) in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). We describe the clinical profile and neuroimaging findings of four cases of MS with BD. Among them, two patients had multiple mood episodes preceding the neurological symptoms, one had concurrent manic and neurological symptoms, and one had multiple depressive episodes and an isolated steroid-induced manic episode. Frontal and temporal lobes, and Periventricular White Matter were involved in all four cases, and hence may be considered biological substrates of BD in MS. Larger studies are needed to validate the utility of these findings.

Abstract
Stimulation of the innate immune system prior to stress exposure is a possible strategy to prevent depression under stressful conditions. Based on the innate immune system stimulating activities of zymosan A, we hypothesize that zymosan A may prevent the development of chronic stress-induced depression-like behavior. Our results showed that a single injection of zymosan A 1 day before stress exposure at a dose of 2 or 4 mg/kg, but not at a dose of 1 mg/kg, prevented the development of depression-like behaviors in mice treated with chronic social defeat stress (CSDS). The prophylactic effect of a single zymosan A injection (2 mg/kg) on CSDS-induced depression-like behaviors disappeared when the time interval between zymosan A and stress exposure was extended from 1 day or 5 days to 10 days, which was rescued by a second zymosan A injection 10 days after the first zymosan A injection and 4 days (4×, once daily) of zymosan A injections 10 days before stress exposure. Further analysis showed that a single zymosan A injection (2 mg/kg) 1 day before stress exposure could prevent the CSDS-induced increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. Inhibition of the innate immune system by pretreatment with minocycline (40 mg/kg) abolished the preventive effect of zymosan A on CSDS-induced depression-like behaviors and CSDS-induced increase in pro-inflammatory cytokines in the brain. These results suggest that activation of the innate immune system triggered by zymosan A prevents the depression-like behaviors and neuroinflammatory responses in the brain induced by chronic stress.

Abstract
Stressful life events (SLEs) and suicidal ideation (SI) are prevalent in persons with major depression disorder (MDD). Less is known about the underlying role of insomnia symptoms in the association between SLEs and SI. This three-wave prospective cohort study sought to investigate the longitudinal association among SLEs, insomnia symptoms, and SI in persons with MDD. The study population included 511 persons with MDD (mean [SD] age, 28.7 [6.7] years; 67.1% were females). Generalized estimated equations (GEEs) were utilized to explore prospective association among exposure of SLEs, insomnia symptoms, and SI. Additionally, a structural equation model (SEM) was employed to estimate the longitudinal mediating effect of insomnia symptoms in the relationship between SLEs and SI. Our study demonstrated that cumulative SLEs were determined to be longitudinally associated with SI in persons with MDD. We further observed that the association between SLEs and SI was significantly mediated by insomnia symptoms. Clinicians assessing persons with MDD, especially those with the history of SLE, could carefully evaluate and promptly treat insomnia symptoms as part of personalized assessment of their depressive illness, thereby achieving early prevention and intervention for suicidal behaviors in persons with MDD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Child maltreatment (CM) is correlated with suicidality risk among adolescents. Additionally, exposure to bisphenol AF (BPAF) may increase this risk. However, the combined effect of CM and BPAF exposure remains unknown and should be further investigated. METHODS In this study, 1,475 early adolescents (mean age = 12.48 years) from the Chinese Early Adolescents Cohort were enrolled. Data were collected at three time points with an interval of 12 months between 2019 and 2021. Participants' history of CM and suicidality (including suicidal ideation and suicidal attempts) were evaluated using a self-report questionnaire. Blood samples were obtained from participants to measure serum BPAF concentrations at baseline. Group-based trajectory modeling was employed to identify different developmental trajectories of suicidality across the three waves. After adjusting for potential confounders, the association between CM and BPAF exposure on suicidal ideation and suicidal attempts was assessed using logistic regression and Poisson regression analyses. RESULTS Participants with CM were associated with a risk of one- and two-year incident suicidality (all ps < 0.05), and BPAF levels were positively associated with two-year incident suicidal ideation (adjusted OR = 1.68, 95% CI: 1.13-2.50). Additionally, middle and high levels of BPAF exposure synergistically increase the risk for one- and two-year incident suicidal ideation among participants with CM (adjusted ORs = 2.00-3.83). Similarly, participants exposed to high-level BPAF as well as CM were at a greater risk of one- and two-year incident suicidal attempts than those with low-level BPAF exposure and no CM (adjusted incidence rate ratio [IRRs] = 2.82-4.34). Moreover, compared with participants with a low developmental trajectory of suicidality across the three waves, high BPAF exposure exhibited a significant synergistic effect on participants with CM in the persistently high suicidal ideation trajectory and the increasing suicidal attempts trajectory (all ps < 0.05). Sex subgroup analysis revealed that females were more susceptible to the synergistic effect of BPAF and CM exposure on suicidality than males. CONCLUSIONS Environmental factors and the psychological status of individuals may synergistically increase their susceptibility to suicidality. These results offer novel insights into enhancing our understanding of suicidality among adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood maltreatment is a well-established transdiagnostic risk factor for suicidal ideation; however, previous studies on their association in schizophrenia have produced highly varied results. Moreover, the mechanism linking childhood maltreatment and suicide ideation remains unclear in schizophrenia. AIMS This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the association between childhood maltreatment and suicide ideation in people with schizophrenia and tested whether insomnia mediated this relationship. METHOD Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), Childhood Trauma Questionnaire - Short Form and Beck Suicidal Ideation Inventory were employed. Logistic regression and mediation analysis were performed. RESULTS (a) The prevalence of suicide ideation, insomnia, sexual abuse, emotional neglect, emotional abuse, physical abuse and physical neglect was 10% (n = 61), 18% (n = 111), 11% (n = 68), 25% (n = 153), 6.3% (n = 39), 17% (n = 106) and 39% (n = 239), respectively. In all, 52% (n = 320) reported childhood maltreatment; (b) patients with suicide ideation demonstrated higher insomnia and childhood maltreatment. PANSS depression factor, ISI, lifetime suicidal attempts and emotional abuse were independently associated with suicide ideation; (c) insomnia partially mediated the effects of emotional abuse and emotional neglect on suicide ideation, and insomnia completely mediated the effects of physical neglect and physical abuse on suicide ideation. CONCLUSION Our study calls for formal assessments for childhood maltreatment and insomnia in schizophrenia, which might help identify suicide ideation early. In addition, interventions targeting insomnia might help reduce suicide ideation among people with schizophrenia who experience childhood maltreatment.

Abstract
Objectives Promoting resilience and embracing healthy coping strategies can effectively assist nursing students in managing stress and enhancing their welfare. Nonetheless, a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing their well-being and resilience, pivotal for both academic accomplishments and future career longevity, remains incomplete. Methods A cross-sectional descriptive correlational design was adopted for this study. Participants comprised students enrolled in pre-registration nursing programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels. The World Health Organization-5 Well-Being Index and the 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale were utilized to assess psychological well-being and resilience, respectively. Results The study involved 175 university nursing students selected through convenience sampling. On the 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, the average score was 25.5, with undergraduate and graduate students scoring an average of 25.4 and 26.3, respectively. Nevertheless, the two groups had no statistically significant difference (p = 0.526). Regarding perceived well-being, the average World Health Organization-5 score was 16.1, with no noticeable distinction between undergraduates and postgraduates (p = 0.858). Notably, bivariate analysis revealed a moderate positive correlation between self-reported resilience and perceived well-being (rp = 0.281, p = 0.001). Moreover, senior students exhibited significantly higher scores on the perceived well-being scale than junior students (17.0 vs 15.1, p = 0.010). Multivariable regression analysis also identified that self-reported resilience represents a consistent means of predicting perceived well-being (regression coefficient B = 0.22, p < 0.001). Conclusions The outcomes indicate that university-based nursing students who exhibit higher levels of resilience have more positive perceptions of their well-being. Moreover, postgraduate students exhibit more significant resilience levels than undergraduate students.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Due to a dearth of evidence, we examined the effectiveness of brief-intensive CBT on symptom severity and catastrophic cognition in patients with panic disorder (PD). MATERIALS AND METHODS In this randomized controlled trial, 155 patients were assigned to either the experimental group (2 successive days of brief-intensive CBT-3 h per day) or the control group (regular pharmacotherapy only). After excluding ineligible participants, 20 patients in the brief intensive CBT group and 18 patients in the control group completed the study and were included in the final analysis. The primary outcome was symptom severity, and the secondary outcome was catastrophic cognition, assessed by the Panic Disorder Severity Scale (PDSS) for symptoms severity and the Agoraphobic Cognition Scale (ACS) for cognitive assessment, respectively. RESULTS The study showed that after one month of treatment, the PDSS (1.70 vs. 4.78; p = 0.0172) in the brief-intensive CBT group was significantly lower compared to the control group in contrast with the ACS (5.10 vs. 5.44; p = 0.8533). The mean score of PDSS and ACS significantly decreased from 21.60 to 1.7 (p < 0.0001) and from 22.55 to 5.10 (p < 0.0001) in the brief CBT group and from 19.44 to 4.78 (p < 0.0001) and 20.00 to 5.44 (p < 0.0001) in the control group, respectively. After treatment, the mean scores of PDSS and ACS significantly decreased in the brief intensive CBT and control groups. Both higher ACS and lower education levels contributed to higher PDSS in the brief intensive CBT group. However, only the PDSS correlated to the ACS in the control group. CONCLUSIONS The study showed that brief-intensive CBT is an effective technique for reducing the severity of symptoms among PD patients. But, it was not effective to improve the cognitive level in PD patients at one month.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Converging lines of evidence indicate that ketamine is a rapid antidepressant for individuals with treatment-resistant depression. Hitherto, no reliable a priori predictors of ketamine response have been reported. Pharmacogenetic biomarkers have yielded mixed results regarding potential candidate genes associated with ketamine's biochemistry as reliable predictors of response. AIMS No studies have examined the effects of Val66Met and CYP2B6 genotypes on patients receiving repeated infusions of intravenous ketamine. METHODS In all, 85 participants with major depressive disorder who had previously received four infusions of intravenous ketamine were recruited to the foregoing study. Buccal swabs were collected and genotype variants across the Val66Met and CYP2B6 genes were analyzed. A repeated measures mixed linear model was used to assess change in depressive symptoms, suicidality, and anxiety, correcting for sex and age. Multiple regression was run to determine whether these genetic markers were associated with treatment efficacy for depressive severity, suicidal ideation, anxiolytic response, and degree of dissociation to intravenous ketamine. RESULTS Participants experienced significant overall reductions in depression, suicide, and anxiety. Overall, 25% met the response criteria and 15% met the remission criteria. However, Val66Met and CYP2B6 did not significantly predict changes in symptoms of depression, suicide, anxiety, or average dissociation. CONCLUSIONS This study contributes to the growing literature that ketamine efficacy is unlikely to be predicted by single genes, and a pleiotropic approach may likely be necessary for developing reliable predictors of clinical benefits.

Abstract
AIMS To compare prospective reports of child maltreatment (CM) with emergency department (ED) presentations for deliberate self-harm (DSH) and suicidal ideation in individuals aged between 25 and 39 years old. METHODS Linked records between the Mater-University of Queensland Study of Pregnancy birth cohort and Queensland administrative health data were used, which included notifications to child protection agencies for CM. ED presentations for individuals aged between 25 and 39 years of age for suicidal ideation, suicidal behaviour or poisoning by paracetamol or psychotropic medications where the intention was unclear were examined using logistic regression analyses. RESULTS A total of 609 (10.1%) individuals were the subject of one or more CM notifications for neglect or physical, sexual or emotional abuse before the age of 15 years. Of these, 250 (4.1%) presented at least once to ED for DSH and/or suicidal ideation between 25 and 39 years of age. In adjusted analysis, any notification of CM was associated with significantly increased odds of presenting to ED for these reasons (aOR = 2.80; 95% CI = 2.04-3.84). In sensitivity analyses, any notification of CM increased the odds of the combined outcome of DSH and suicidal ideation by 275% (aOR = 2.75; 95% CI = 1.96-4.06) and increased the odds of DSH alone by 269% (aOR = 2.69; 95% CI = 1.65-4.41). CONCLUSIONS All CM types (including emotional abuse and neglect) were associated with ED presentations for DSH and suicidal ideation in individuals between 25 and 39 years of age. These findings have important implications for the prevention of DSH, suicidal ideation and other health outcomes. They also underscore the importance of trauma-informed care in ED for all individuals presenting with DSH and suicidal ideation.

Abstract
Toxoplasma gondii (TOXO) infection typically results in chronic latency due to its ability to form cysts in the brain and other organs. Latent toxoplasmosis could promote innate immune responses and impact brain function. A large body of evidence has linked TOXO infection to severe mental illness (SMI). We hypothesized that TOXO immunoglobulin G (IgG) seropositivity, reflecting previous infection and current latency, is associated with increased circulating neuron-specific enolase (NSE), a marker of brain damage, and interleukin-18 (IL-18), an innate immune marker, mainly in SMI. We included 735 patients with SMI (schizophrenia or bipolar spectrum) (mean age 32 years, 47% women), and 518 healthy controls (HC) (mean age 33 years, 43% women). TOXO IgG, expressed as seropositivity/seronegativity, NSE and IL-18 were measured with immunoassays. We searched for main and interaction effects of TOXO, patient/control status and sex on NSE and IL-18. In the whole sample as well as among patients and HC separately, IL-18 and NSE concentrations were positively correlated (p < 0.001). TOXO seropositive participants had significantly higher NSE (3713 vs. 2200 pg/ml, p < 0.001) and IL-18 levels (1068 vs. 674 pg/ml, p < 0.001) than seronegative participants, and evaluation within patients and HC separately showed similar results. Post-hoc analysis on cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex virus 1 IgG status showed no associations with NSE or IL-18 which may suggest TOXO specificity. These results may indicate ongoing inflammasome activation and neuronal injury in people with TOXO infections unrelated to diagnosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To identify the core residual symptom of MDD and assess its relationship with patients' long-term outcomes. METHOD All patients were administered antidepressants during the acute phase and treated continuously. The 521 patients remitted at month 6 of a multicenter prospective project were included. Remission was defined as a Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptoms-Self-Report total score of ≤5. Functional impairments were measured with the Sheehan Disability Scale, quality of life with the Quality of Life Enjoyment and Satisfaction Questionnaire - short form, and family burden with the Family Burden Scale of Disease. Visits were scheduled at baseline, weeks 2, 8, 12, and month 6. RESULTS Difficulty with concentration/decision making was the core residual symptom of MDD, determined with the centrality measure of network analysis. It was positively associated with functional impairments and family burden (r = 0.35, P < 0.01 and r = 0.31, P < 0.01, respectively) and negatively associated with life satisfaction (r = -0.29, P < 0.01). The exhibition of this residual symptom was associated with a family history of psychiatric disorders (OR = 2.610 [1.242-5.485]). CONCLUSIONS The core residual symptom of MDD, difficulty with concentration/decision making, is associated with poorer social functioning, heavier family burden, and lower life satisfaction. Abstract
Long working hours and overwork have recently emerged as pressing public health concerns. We explored the association between long working hours and suicidal ideation in female workers. A total of 8017 women (24,331 observations) from the fourth to eighth waves of the Korean Longitudinal Survey of Women and Families (2012-2020) were analyzed. To address the repeated measurements within each participant, we employed a generalized estimating equation to estimate the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). The prevalence of suicidal ideation was 1.9% for those working 35-40 h/week and 4.4% for those working ≥55 h/week. Compared to individuals working 35-40 h/week, those working ≥55 h/week were more likely to experience concurrent suicidal ideation (OR [95% CI]:1.85 [1.43-2.39]). The OR (95% CI) of the association between long working hours and onset of suicidal ideation in the subsequent wave was 1.69 (1.20-2.38) for ≥55 h/week. In subgroup analysis, this association was pronounced among workers with low-income levels (OR [95% CI]: 1.97 [1.29-3.02]) and blue-collar occupations (OR [95% CI]: 2.27 [1.41-3.66]). Policy efforts are required to protect the mental health of female workers exposed to long working hours.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep problems are commonly observed in patients with tic disorders. Nevertheless, studies have demonstrated a wide variation in the prevalence of sleep disturbances among this population. Consequently, it remains ambiguous whether sleep issues are inherently characteristic of tic disorders or are influenced by external factors. METHODS We conducted a comprehensive search across various databases and performed a meta-analysis to determine the prevalence of sleep problems in tic disorders. Additionally, we assessed pre-existing comorbidities and associated characteristics using meta-regression analysis. RESULTS After including 33 studies in the final meta-analysis, we found that the pooled prevalence of sleep problems in tic disorders was 34% (95%CI: 26% to 43%). Meta-regression analysis revealed that the presence of co-occurring symptoms of ADHD (p < 0.05), obsession compulsive disorder/behaviours (p < 0.05), anxiety (p < 0.001), and mood disorders (p < 0.001) was associated with an increased likelihood of experiencing sleep problems. CONCLUSIONS Our findings consistently indicate that individuals with tic disorders frequently encounter significant sleep problems. This underscores the importance of routinely screening for sleep problems during clinical assessments. Effectively managing sleep problems in patients with tic disorders is crucial not only for the well-being of the patients themselves but also for their families.

Abstract
In light of the aging demographic in China, heightened attention is warranted for the mental well-being of elderly individuals. Nevertheless, the prevalence of suicidal ideation among older residents in Chinese nursing homes and the nuanced impact of family support on this phenomenon, mediated by anxiety and depressive symptoms, remain unclear. A cohort of 506 Chinese elderly adults participated in the study. Psychosocial traits were assessed using the Perceived Social Support from Family scale (PSS-Fa) for family support, the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7) for anxiety symptoms, the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) for depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation. A structural equation model (SEM) was employed to execute a serial mediation model. The analysis of 506 elderly adults revealed that 8.1% reported varying levels of suicidal ideation within Chinese nursing homes. The pathway from family support to anxiety symptoms (standardized beta = -0.025, P = .241), family support to depressive symptoms (standardized beta = -0.072, P < .05), and family support to suicidal ideation (standardized beta = -0.082, P < .05) were explored. Additionally, pathways from anxiety symptoms to suicidal ideation (standardized beta = 0.364, P < .001), anxiety symptoms to depressive symptoms (standardized beta = 0.647, P < .001), and depressive symptoms to suicidal ideation (standardized beta = 0.369, P < .001) were examined. This study elucidated the underlying mechanisms connecting family support to suicidal ideation, with depressive symptoms partially mediating this association. Additionally, our discoveries shed light on the partial mediation of anxiety symptoms by depressive factors when it came to the realm of suicidal ideation.

Abstract
Suicide remains a significant public health challenge globally, requiring comprehensive approaches for prevention and treatment. Almost 90% of individuals who commit suicide suffer from mental health disorders at the time of death, emphasizing the central role of psychiatry in understanding and preventing suicide. Suicidal thoughts, planning, attempts, and completed suicides exist on a continuum, with the highest suicide rates occurring within six months after an attempt and more severe attempts increasing the risk of future suicide. History plays a significant role in shaping the perception of suicide, from considering it a sin to recognizing it as a mental illness. Emile Durkheim's ground-breaking work on suicide as a social phenomenon furthered our understanding. Knowledge regarding the complexities surrounding suicide is paramount to developing effective strategies. Early detection through clinical interviews and screening tools and creating safe spaces for discussion are critical prevention measures. Pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions are essential for addressing underlying psychiatric disorders and reducing suicidal thoughts and behaviors. While significant progress has been made in understanding suicide risk factors and implementing prevention strategies, continued research and community engagement are imperative. Destigmatizing mental health discourse and fostering supportive environments are essential steps toward reducing the incidence of suicide and supporting individuals in distress. By embracing a holistic approach that integrates pharmacological and non- pharmacological interventions, along with societal engagement, we can strive towards a future where suicide is increasingly rare, and individuals feel valued, supported, and connected.

Abstract
Objective We aimed to investigate the characteristics and psychological mechanism of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescents with mood disorders. We examined how self-compassion and emotional regulation affected NSSI and tested the mediating role of self-compassion in the link between emotional regulation and NSSI. Method We recruited outpatient and inpatient adolescent patients with bipolar and related disorders or depressive disorders (DSM-5), with a focus on NSSI. We also recruited healthy controls from the community. We collected demographic and clinical data. The Adolescent Self-injury Questionnaire, Self-compassion Scale (SCS), and Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) were used to assess the frequency and severity of NSSI, level of self-compassion, and emotional regulation. Results In total, we recruited 248 adolescent patients with mood disorders (N = 196 with NSSI, and 52 without NSSI) and 212 healthy controls. NSSI was significantly associated with the female sex, lower levels of education and less use of cognitive reappraisal strategies, lower levels of self-warmth, and higher levels of self-coldness. Multivariate analysis of variance showed that there were significant differences in the scores of ERQ, cognitive reassessment score, and the scores of SCS among the three groups, but no statistical differences in expressive suppression score among the three groups. Self-warmth had a mediating effect between cognitive reappraisal and NSSI behavior. Conclusion NSSI is prevalent among adolescent patients with mood disorders in clinical settings, especially among girls and those with lower levels of education and less cognitive reappraisal strategies. More clinical attention is needed. Self-compassion and its factors may mediate the association between emotional regulation and NSSI. Clinical implications and future research directions were discussed.
