Multi-wall carbon Nanotube surface-based functional nanoparticles for stimuli-responsive dual pharmaceutical compound delivery

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have the potential to serve as delivery systems for medicinal substances and gene treatments, particularly in cancer treatment. Co-delivery of curcumin (CUR) and Methotrexate (MTX) has shown promise in cancer treatment, as it uses fewer drugs and has fewer side effects. This study used MTX-conjugated albumin (BSA)-based nanoparticles (BSA-MTX) to enhance and assess the efficiency of CUR. In-vitro cytotoxicity tests, DLS, TEM, FTIR, UV/Vis, SEM, and DSC studies assessed the formulations' physical and chemical properties. The Proteinase K enzyme was used to severe amidic linkages between MTX and BSA. The findings demonstrated the efficacy of using ƒ-MWCNT-CUR-BSA-MTX as a vehicle for efficient co-delivery of CUR and MTX in cancer treatment. The MTT colorimetric method was used to evaluate the effect of chemical and medicinal compounds. Cell division was studied using the MTT method to investigate the effect of pure MWCNT, pure CUR, MTX-BSA, and ƒ-MWCNT-CUR-MTX-BSA. Studies on cell lines have shown that the combination of curcumin and MTX with CNT can increase and improve the effectiveness of both drugs against cancer. A combination of drugs curcumin and methotrexate simultaneously had a synergistic effect on MCF-7 cells, which indicated that these drugs could potentially be used as a strategy for both prevention and treatment of breast cancer. Also, ƒ-MWCNT-CUR-MTX-BSA was found to have a significant effect on cancer treatment with minimal toxicity compared to pure curcumin, pure MTX-BSA, MTX, and ƒ-MWCNT alone. Unique properties such as a high ratio of specific surface area to volume, high chemical stability, chemical adsorption ability, high capacity of drug and biomolecules of carbon nanotubes, as well as multiple drug loading at the same time The combination of ƒ-MWCNT-CUR-BSA MTX significantly impacts cancer therapy), are desirable as an alternative option for targeted drug delivery and high therapeutic efficiency.

Graphene as a promising material in orthodontics: A review

Graphene is an extraordinary material with unique mechanical, chemical, and thermal properties. Additionally, it boasts high surface area and antimicrobial properties, making it an attractive option for researchers exploring innovative materials for biomedical applications. Although there have been various studies on graphene applications in different biomedical fields, limited reviews have been conducted on its use in dentistry, and no reviews have focused on its application in the orthodontic field. This review aims to present a comprehensive overview of graphene-based materials, with an emphasis on their antibacterial mechanisms and the factors that influence these properties. Additionally, the review summarizes the dental applications of graphene, spotlighting the studies of its orthodontic application as they can be used to enhance the antibacterial and mechanical properties of orthodontic materials such as adhesives, archwires, and splints. Also, they can be utilized to enhance bone remodeling during orthodontic tooth movement. An electronic search was carried out in Scopus, PubMed, Science Direct, and Wiley Online Library digital database platforms using graphene and orthodontics as keywords. The search was restricted to English language publications without a time limit. This review highlights the need for further laboratory and clinical research using graphene-based materials to improve the properties of orthodontic materials to make them available for clinical use.

Progress in the application of graphene and its derivatives to osteogenesis

As bone and joint injuries from various causes become increasingly prominent, how to effectively reconstruct and repair bone defects presents a difficult problem for clinicians and researchers. In recent years, graphene and its derivatives have been the subject of growing body of research and have been found to promote the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of stem cells. This provides a new idea for solving the clinical problem of bone defects. However, as as numerous articles address various aspects and have not been fully systematized, there is an urgent need to classify and summarize them. In this paper, for the first time, the effects of graphene and its derivatives on stem cells in solution, in 2D and 3D structures and in vivo and their possible mechanisms are reviewed, and the cytotoxic effects of graphene and its derivatives were summarized and analyzed. The toxicity of graphene and its derivatives is further reviewed. In addition, we suggest possible future development directions of graphene and its derivatives in bone tissue engineering applications to provide a reference for further clinical application.

Phosphorylcholine-grafted graphene oxide loaded with irinotecan for potential oncology therapy

2-Methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) zwitterions were modified onto self-made graphene oxide (GO) through the atom transfer radical polymerization method. The chemical structures of the products were verified using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), etc. It was found that the modified GO (GO-PCn) is well dispersed in water with an average hydrodynamic diameter of about 170 nm. By utilizing the 2D planar structure of this modified graphene, the irinotecan@GO-PCn composite can be loaded with about 20% of irinotecan via π-π stacking interaction and exhibit pH-sensitive drug release performance, releasing faster in the acidic environment. The in vitro cytotoxicity assessments confirmed that GO-PCn composed of phosphorylcholine moiety represented low cytotoxicity and acted as a certain effect on reducing the acute toxicity of irinotecan, which established a foundation for further studies of the system in oncology therapy.

A scoping review of graphene-based biomaterials for in vivo bone tissue engineering

The growing demand for more efficient materials for medical applications brought together two previously distinct fields: medicine and engineering. Regenerative medicine has evolved with the engineering contributions to improve materials and devices for medical use. In this regard, graphene is one of the most promising materials for bone tissue engineering and its potential for bone repair has been studied by several research groups. The aim of this study is to conduct a scoping review including articles published in the last 12 years (from 2010 to 2022) that have used graphene and its derivatives (graphene oxide and reduced graphene) in preclinical studies for bone tissue regeneration, searching in PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Central, and clinicaltrials.gov (to confirm no study has started with clinical trial). Boolean searches were performed using the defined key words "bone" and "graphene", and manuscript abstracts were uploaded to Rayyan, a web-tool for systematic and scoping reviews. This scoping review was conducted based on Joanna Briggs Institute Manual for Scoping Reviews and the report follows the recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses - Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) statement. After the search protocol and application of the inclusion criteria, 77 studies were selected and evaluated by five blinded researchers. Most of the selected studies used composite materials associated with graphene and its derivatives to natural and synthetic polymers, bioglass, and others. Although a variety of graphene materials were analyzed in these studies, they all concluded that graphene, its derivatives, and its composites improve bone repair processes by increasing osteoconductivity, osteoinductivity, new bone formation, and angiogenesis. Thus, this systematic review opens up new opportunities for the development of novel strategies for bone tissue engineering with graphene.

Intrinsic mechanisms for the inhibition effect of graphene oxide on the catalysis activity of alpha amylase

Comprehending the interactions between graphene oxide (GO) and enzymes is critical for understanding the toxicities of GO. In this study, the inherent interactions of GO with α-amylase as a typical enzyme, and the impacts of GO on the conformation and biological activities of α-amylase were systematically investigated. The results reveal that GO formed ground-state complex with α-amylase primarily via hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions, thus quenching the intrinsic fluorescence of the protein statically. Particularly, the strong interactions altered the microenvironment of tyrosine and tryptophan residues, caused rearrangement of polypeptide structure, and reduced the contents of α-helices and β-sheets, thus changing the conformational structure of α-amylase. According to molecular docking results, GO binds with the amino acid residues (i.e., His299, Asp300, and His305) of α-amylase mainly through hydrogen bonding, which is in accordance with in vitro incubation experiments. As a consequence, the ability of α-amylase to catalyze starch hydrolysis into glucose was depressed by GO, suggesting that GO might cause dysfunction of α-amylase. This study discloses the intrinsic binding mechanisms of GO with α-amylase and provides novel insights into the adverse effects of GO as it enters organisms.

Bactericidal Activity of Graphene Oxide Tests for Selected Microorganisms

The aim of this study was to determine the bactericidal potential of graphene oxide (GO) in contact with four species of bacteria: E. coli, S. mutans, S. aureus and E. faecalis. Bacterial cell suspensions of each species were incubated in a medium containing GO, with incubation times of 5, 10, 30 and 60 min, at final concentrations of 50, 100, 200, 300 and 500 μg/mL. The cytotoxicity of GO was evaluated using live/dead staining. The results were recorded using a BD Accuri C6 flow cytofluorimeter. Obtained data were analyzed using BD CSampler software. A significant bacteria viability reduction was noted in all GO-containing samples. The antibacterial properties of GO were strongly influenced by GO concentration and incubation time. The highest bactericidal activity was observed at concentrations of 300 and 500 μg/mL for all incubation times (5, 10, 30 and 60 min). The highest antimicrobial potential was observed for E. coli: after 60 min, the mortality rate was 94% at 300 µg/mL GO and 96% at 500 µg/mL GO; the lowest was found for S. aureus-49% (300 µg/mL) and 55% (500 µg/mL).

High-Performance Graphene Nanowalls/Si Self-Powered Photodetectors with HfO2 as an Interfacial Layer

Graphene/silicon (Si) heterojunction photodetectors are widely studied in detecting of optical signals from near-infrared to visible light. However, the performance of graphene/Si photodetectors is limited by defects created in the growth process and surface recombination at the interface. Herein, a remote plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition is introduced to directly grow graphene nanowalls (GNWs) at a low power of 300 W, which can effectively improve the growth rate and reduce defects. Moreover, hafnium oxide (HfO₂) with thicknesses ranging from 1 to 5 nm grown by atomic layer deposition has been employed as an interfacial layer for the GNWs/Si heterojunction photodetector. It is shown that the high-k dielectric layer of HfO₂ acts as an electron-blocking and hole transport layer, which minimizes the recombination and reduces the dark current. At an optimized thickness of 3 nm HfO₂, a low dark current of 3.85 × 10^-10, with a responsivity of 0.19 AW^-1, a specific detectivity of 1.38 × 10¹² as well as an external quantum efficiency of 47.1% at zero bias, can be obtained for the fabricated GNWs/HfO₂/Si photodetector. This work demonstrates a universal strategy to fabricate high-performance graphene/Si photodetectors.

CHARMM-GUI Membrane Builder: Past, Current, and Future Developments and Applications

Molecular dynamics simulations of membranes and membrane proteins serve as computational microscopes, revealing coordinated events at the membrane interface. As G protein-coupled receptors, ion channels, transporters, and membrane-bound enzymes are important drug targets, understanding their drug binding and action mechanisms in a realistic membrane becomes critical. Advances in materials science and physical chemistry further demand an atomistic understanding of lipid domains and interactions between materials and membranes. Despite a wide range of membrane simulation studies, generating a complex membrane assembly remains challenging. Here, we review the capability of CHARMM-GUI Membrane Builder in the context of emerging research demands, as well as the application examples from the CHARMM-GUI user community, including membrane biophysics, membrane protein drug-binding and dynamics, protein-lipid interactions, and nano-bio interface. We also provide our perspective on future Membrane Builder development.

An Overview on Exploitation of Graphene-Based Membranes: From Water Treatment to Medical Industry, Including Recent Fighting against COVID-19

Graphene and its derivatives have lately been the subject of increased attention for different environmental applications of membrane technology such as water treatment and air filtration, exploiting their antimicrobial and antiviral activity. They are interesting candidates as membrane materials for their outstanding mechanical and chemical stability and for their thin two-dimensional (2D) nanostructure with potential pore engineering for advanced separation. All these applications have evolved and diversified from discovery to today, and now graphene and graphene derivatives also offer fascinating opportunities for the fight against infective diseases such as COVID-19 thanks to their antimicrobial and antiviral properties. This paper presents an overview of graphene-based 2D materials, their preparation and use as membrane material for applications in water treatment and in respiratory protection devices.

Investigating the structure of the product of graphene oxide reaction with folic acid and chitosan: density functional theory calculations

Chitosan biopolymer was used to modify the level of graphene oxide. And the composite prepared from graphene oxide/chitosan, due to its favorable physical and chemical properties, have been used as a drug delivery system. In this study, the adsorption of Folic acid on the carrier was investigated using density functional theory (DFT). The geometry optimizations, electronic structures, and gas-phase properties of widely applicable graphene (G), graphene oxide (GO), chitosan (CS), folic acid (FA), GO-CS and GO-CS-FA were investigated using DFT. The studied molecules are based on graphene oxide. In GO-CS, DFT calculation show that two Chitosan connected to the GO molecule on both opposite sides, so that two Chitosan have maximum distance from each other. Finally, the electronic structure of FA was obtained with this molecule calculated and discussed. The interaction of hydrogen bonds in the most stable pair formers between molecules were determined. Furthermore, the hydrogen bonds were studied by atom in molecules natural bond orbital analyses.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

M. SK, Baek KH. Assessing the Food Quality Using Carbon Nanomaterial Based Electrodes by Voltammetric Techniques

The world is facing a global financial loss and health effects due to food quality adulteration and contamination, which are seriously affecting human health. Synthetic colors, flavors, and preservatives are added to make food more attractive to consumers. Therefore, food safety has become one of the fundamental needs of mankind. Due to the importance of food safety, the world is in great need of developing desirable and accurate methods for determining the quality of food. In recent years, the electrochemical methods have become more popular, due to their simplicity, ease in handling, economics, and specificity in determining food safety. Common food contaminants, such as pesticides, additives, and animal drug residues, cause foods that are most vulnerable to contamination to undergo evaluation frequently. The present review article discusses the electrochemical detection of the above food contaminants using different carbon nanomaterials, such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC), carbon dots, boron doped diamond (BDD), and fullerenes. The voltammetric methods, such as cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), have been proven to be potential methods for determining food contaminants. The use of carbon-based electrodes has the added advantage of electrochemically sensing the food contaminants due to their excellent sensitivity, specificity, large surface area, high porosity, antifouling, and biocompatibility.

Anticancer Applications of Essential Oils Formulated into Lipid-Based Delivery Nanosystems

The use of natural compounds is becoming increasingly popular among patients, and there is a renewed interest among scientists in nature-based bioactive agents. Traditionally, herbal drugs can be taken directly in the form of teas/decoctions/infusions or as standardized extracts. However, the disadvantages of natural compounds, especially essential oils, are their instability, limited bioavailability, volatility, and often irritant/allergenic potential. However, these active substances can be stabilized by encapsulation and administered in the form of nanoparticles. This brief overview summarizes the latest results of the application of nanoemulsions, liposomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, and nanostructured lipid carriers used as drug delivery systems of herbal essential oils or used directly for their individual secondary metabolites applicable in cancer therapy. Although the discussed bioactive agents are not typical compounds used as anticancer agents, after inclusion into the aforesaid formulations improving their stability and bioavailability and/or therapeutic profile, they indicated anti-tumor activity and became interesting agents with cancer treatment potential. In addition, co-encapsulation of essential oils with synthetic anticancer drugs into nanoformulations with the aim to achieve synergistic effect in chemotherapy is discussed.

Recent biomedical advancements in graphene oxide- and reduced graphene oxide-based nanocomposite nanocarriers

Recently, nanocarriers, including micelles, polymers, carbon-based materials, liposomes, and other substances, have been developed for efficient delivery of drugs, nucleotides, and biomolecules. This review focuses on graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as active components in nanocarriers, because their chemical structures and easy functionalization can be valuable assets for in vitro and in vivo delivery. Herein, we describe the preparation, structure, and functionalization of GO and rGO. Additionally, their important properties to function as nanocarriers are presented, including their molecular interactions with various compounds, near-infrared light adsorption, and biocompatibility. Subsequently, their mechanisms and the most appealing examples of their delivery applications are summarized. Overall, GO- and rGO-based nanocomposites show great promise as multipurpose nanocarriers owing to their various potential applications in drug and gene delivery, phototherapy, bioimaging, biosensing, tissue engineering, and as antibacterial agents.

Novel avenues for identification of new antifungal drugs and current challenges

INTRODUCTION

: Some of otherwise useful fungi are pathogenic to humans, and unfortunately, the number of these pathogens is increasing. In addition to common skin infections, these opportunistic pathogens are able to cause severe, often incurable, systemic mycoses.

AREAS COVERED

: The number of antifungal drugs is limited, especially drugs that can be used for systemic administration, and resistance to these drugs is very common. This review summarizes various approaches to the discovery and development of new antifungal drugs, provides an overview of the most important molecules in terms of basic (laboratory) research and compounds currently in clinical trials, and focuses on drug repurposing strategy, while providing an overview of drugs of other indications that have been tested in vitro for their antifungal activity for possible expansion of antifungal drugs and/or support of existing antimycotics.

EXPERT OPINION

: Despite the limitations of the research of new antifungal drugs by pharmaceutical manufacturers, in addition to innovated molecules based on clinically used drugs, several completely new small entities with unique mechanisms of actions have been identified. The identification of new molecular targets that offer alternatives for the development of new unique selective antifungal highly effective agents has been an important outcome of repurposing of non-antifungal drugs to antifungal drug. Also, given the advances in monoclonal antibodies and their application to immunosuppressed patients, it may seem possible to predict a more optimistic future for antifungal therapy than has been the case in recent decades.

Advances in Biologically Applicable Graphene-Based 2D Nanomaterials

Climate change and increasing contamination of the environment, due to anthropogenic activities, are accompanied with a growing negative impact on human life. Nowadays, humanity is threatened by the increasing incidence of difficult-to-treat cancer and various infectious diseases caused by resistant pathogens, but, on the other hand, ensuring sufficient safe food for balanced human nutrition is threatened by a growing infestation of agriculturally important plants, by various pathogens or by the deteriorating condition of agricultural land. One way to deal with all these undesirable facts is to try to develop technologies and sophisticated materials that could help overcome these negative effects/gloomy prospects. One possibility is to try to use nanotechnology and, within this broad field, to focus also on the study of two-dimensional carbon-based nanomaterials, which have excellent prospects to be used in various economic sectors. In this brief up-to-date overview, attention is paid to recent applications of graphene-based nanomaterials, i.e., graphene, graphene quantum dots, graphene oxide, graphene oxide quantum dots, and reduced graphene oxide. These materials and their various modifications and combinations with other compounds are discussed, regarding their biomedical and agro-ecological applications, i.e., as materials investigated for their antineoplastic and anti-invasive effects, for their effects against various plant pathogens, and as carriers of bioactive agents (drugs, pesticides, fertilizers) as well as materials suitable to be used in theranostics. The negative effects of graphene-based nanomaterials on living organisms, including their mode of action, are analyzed as well.

Novel nanocarriers for silencing anti-phagocytosis CD47 marker in acute myeloid leukemia cells

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a malignant disorder of Hematopoietic stem cells, can escape immunosurveillance by over expression of the cluster of differentiation 47 (CD47) marker, which functions as an inhibitory signal, suppressing phagocytosis by binding to signal regulatory protein α (SIRPα) on macrophages. AML is treated mainly by chemotherapy, which has drastic side effects and poor outcomes for the patients. Most AML patients develop drug resistance, so other methods to treat AML are highly required. Small interfering RNA (siRNA) is considered as an antitumor therapeutic due to its ability to silence genes associated with the overexpressed cancer markers and subsequently re-sensitize cancer cells. However, delivering siRNA into cells faces challenges, and the development of an effective delivery system is desired for successful silencing at the gene level. Herein, we report the usage of different formulations of graphene oxide (GO) as carriers for the delivery of CD47_siRNA (siRNA against CD47) into AML cells in vitro. The polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dendrimers (PAMAM) modified GO with small flake sizes achieved the highest silencing efficiency of the anti-phagocytosis marker CD47 gene, resulted CD47 protein down-regulation in AML cells. Moreover, the concentration at which the GO-based formulations was used has shown no cytotoxicity in AML cells or normal blood cells, which could be used to screen potential drugs for targeted gene therapy in AML.

Drug repurposing to overcome microbial resistance

Infections are a growing global threat, and the number of resistant species of microbial pathogens is alarming. However, the rapid development of cross-resistant or multidrug-resistant strains and the development of so-called 'superbugs' are in stark contrast to the number of newly launched anti-infectives on the market. In this review, I summarize the causes of antimicrobial resistance, briefly discuss different approaches to the discovery and development of new anti-infective drugs, and focus on drug repurposing strategy, which is discussed from all possible perspectives. A comprehensive overview of drugs of other indications tested for their in vitro antimicrobial activity to support existing anti-infective therapeutics is provided, including several critical remarks on this strategy of repurposing non-antibiotics to antibacterial drugs.

Poly(Lactic Acid) (PLA)-Based Nanocomposites: Impact of Vermiculite, Silver, and Graphene Oxide on Thermal Stability, Isothermal Crystallization, and Local Mechanical Behavior

The structural, thermal, and mechanical properties of unreinforced and reinforced polylactic acid (PLA) were investigated. The PLA was a biopolymer that was reinforced with four fillers (i.e., graphene oxide (GO) and silver (Ag); vermiculite (VMT) and silver (Ag); and two organically modified vermiculites). The processing technique for the production of the composite materials were carefully planned. The PLA nanocomposites were investigated by examining their morphological aspects, changes in PLA phases and transitions and, most importantly, the effect on certain final properties. X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis indicated that the sample was completely amorphous. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) results indicated that the presence of reinforcing particles in the PLA matrix did not affect the thermal degradation of these composites. Furthermore, the local mechanical properties were investigated using the microindentation method to evaluate the effect of different nanofillers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a VHX-500 optical digital microscope (Keyence International, Mechelen, Belgium) were also used to examine the surface morphology of the PLA polymer composites. These results can help to select suitable fillers to enhance the PLA performance of biopolymers.

Advances in Nanostructures for Antimicrobial Therapy

Microbial infections caused by a variety of drug-resistant microorganisms are more common, but there are fewer and fewer approved new antimicrobial chemotherapeutics for systemic administration capable of acting against these resistant infectious pathogens. Formulation innovations of existing drugs are gaining prominence, while the application of nanotechnologies is a useful alternative for improving/increasing the effect of existing antimicrobial drugs. Nanomaterials represent one of the possible strategies to address this unfortunate situation. This review aims to summarize the most current results of nanoformulations of antibiotics and antibacterial active nanomaterials. Nanoformulations of antimicrobial peptides, synergistic combinations of antimicrobial-active agents with nitric oxide donors or combinations of small organic molecules or polymers with metals, metal oxides or metalloids are discussed as well. The mechanisms of actions of selected nanoformulations, including systems with magnetic, photothermal or photodynamic effects, are briefly described.

Progress in the Development of Graphene-Based Biomaterials for Tissue Engineering and Regeneration

Over the last few decades, tissue engineering has become an important technology for repairing and rebuilding damaged tissues and organs. The scaffold plays an important role and has become a hot pot in the field of tissue engineering. It has sufficient mechanical and biochemical properties and simulates the structure and function of natural tissue to promote the growth of cells inward. Therefore, graphene-based nanomaterials (GBNs), such as graphene and graphene oxide (GO), have attracted wide attention in the field of biomedical tissue engineering because of their unique structure, large specific surface area, good photo-thermal effect, pH response and broad-spectrum antibacterial properties. In this review, the structure and properties of typical GBNs are summarized, the progress made in the development of GBNs in soft tissue engineering (including skin, muscle, nerve and blood vessel) are highlighted, the challenges and prospects of the application of GBNs in soft tissue engineering have prospected.

Application of Graphene in Tissue Engineering of the Nervous System

Graphene is the thinnest two-dimensional (2D), only one carbon atom thick, but one of the strongest biomaterials. Due to its unique structure, it has many unique properties used in tissue engineering of the nervous system, such as high strength, flexibility, adequate softness, electrical conductivity, antibacterial effect, and the ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Graphene is also characterized by the possibility of modifications that allow for even wider application and adaptation to cell cultures of specific cells and tissues, both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, by using the patient's own cells for cell culture, it will be possible to produce tissues and organs that can be re-transplanted without transplant rejection, the negative effects of taking immunosuppressive drugs, and waiting for an appropriate organ donor.

Formulation of nano-graphene doped with nano silver modified dentin bonding agents with enhanced interfacial stability and antibiofilm properties

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to synthesize and characterize reduced nano graphene oxide (RGO) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) doped with silver nanoparticles (nAg) and to prepare an experimental dentin adhesive modified with RGO/nAg and GNP/nAg nanofillers for studying various biological and mechanical properties after bonding to tooth dentin.

METHODS

Nanoparticles were characterized for their morphology and chemical structure using electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. Experimental dentin adhesive was modified using two weight percentage (0.25% and 0.5%) of RGO/nAg and GNP/nAg to study its degree of conversion (DC), antimicrobial potential, and cytotoxicity. The effect and significance of these modified bonding agents on resin-dentin bonded interface were investigated by evaluating interfacial nanoleakage, micropermeability, nanodynamic mechanical analysis, micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS), and four-point bending strength (BS), RESULTS: Both 0.25% and 0.5% GNP/nAg graphene-modified adhesives showed comparable DC values to the commercial and experimental adhesive (range: 42-46%). The bacterial viability of the groups 0.25% and 0.5% GNP-Ag remained very low under 25% compared to RGO/nAg groups with low cytotoxicity profiles (cell viability>85%). Resin-bonded dentin interface created with GNP/nAg showed homogenous, well-defined hybrid layer and regularly formed long resin tags devoid of any microporosity as evidenced by SEM and confocal microscopy. The lowest nanoleakage and highest bending strength and µTBS was recorded for 0.25% GNP/nAg after 12 months of ageing. A significantly increased nanoelasticity was seen for all experimental groups except for control groups.

SIGNIFICANCE

The addition of 0.25% GNP/nAg showed optimized anti-biofilm properties without affecting the standard adhesion characteristics.

Etched 3D-Printed Polycaprolactone Constructs Functionalized with Reduced Graphene Oxide for Enhanced Attachment of Dental Pulp-Derived Stem Cells

A core challenge in the field of tissue engineering is the ability to establish pipeline workflows for the design and characterization of scaffold technologies with clinically translatable attributes. The parallel development of biomaterials and stem cell populations represents a self-sufficient and streamlined approach for establishing such a pipeline. In the current study, rat dental pulp stem cell (rDPSC) populations were established to assess functionalized polycaprolactone (PCL) constructs. Initial optimization and characterization of rDPSC extraction and culture conditions confirmed that cell populations were readily expandable and demonstrated surface markers associated with multi-potency. Subset populations were transduced to express DsRed fluorescent protein as a mechanism of tracking both cells and cell-derived extracellular matrix content on complex scaffold architecture. Thermoplastic constructs included reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as an additive to promote cellular attachment and were further modified by surface etching a weak acetic acid solution to roughen surface topographical features, which was observed to dramatically improve cell surface coverage in vitro. Based on these data, the modified rGO-functionalized PCL constructs represent a versatile platform for bone tissue engineering, capable of being applied as a standalone matrix or in conjunction with bio-active payloads such as DPSCs or other bio-inks.

Mesenchymal stem cell-based nanoparticles and scaffolds in regenerative medicine

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are adult stem cells owing to their regenerative potential and multilineage potency. MSCs have wide-scale applications either in their native cellular form or in conjugation with specific biomaterials as nanocomposites. Majorly, these natural or synthetic biomaterials are being used in the form of metallic and non-metallic nanoparticles (NPs) to encapsulate MSCs within hydrogels like alginate or chitosan or drug cargo loading into MSCs. In contrast, nanofibers of polymer scaffolds such as polycaprolactone (PCL), poly-lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA), poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), silk fibroin, collagen, chitosan, alginate, hyaluronic acid (HA), and cellulose are used to support or grow MSCs directly on it. These MSCs based nanotherapies have application in multiple domains of biomedicine including wound healing, bone and cartilage engineering, cardiac disorders, and neurological disorders. This study focused on current approaches of MSCs-based therapies and has been divided into two major sections. The first section elaborates on MSC-based nano-therapies and their plausible applications including exosome engineering and NPs encapsulation. The following section focuses on the various MSC-based scaffold approaches in tissue engineering. Conclusively, this review mainly focused on MSC-based nanocomposite's current approaches and compared their advantages and limitations for building effective regenerative medicines.

Advances in Use of Nanomaterials for Musculoskeletal Regeneration

Since the worldwide incidence of bone disorders and cartilage damage has been increasing and traditional therapy has reached its limits, nanomaterials can provide a new strategy in the regeneration of bones and cartilage. The nanoscale modifies the properties of materials, and many of the recently prepared nanocomposites can be used in tissue engineering as scaffolds for the development of biomimetic materials involved in the repair and healing of damaged tissues and organs. In addition, some nanomaterials represent a noteworthy alternative for treatment and alleviating inflammation or infections caused by microbial pathogens. On the other hand, some nanomaterials induce inflammation processes, especially by the generation of reactive oxygen species. Therefore, it is necessary to know and understand their effects in living systems and use surface modifications to prevent these negative effects. This contribution is focused on nanostructured scaffolds, providing a closer structural support approximation to native tissue architecture for cells and regulating cell proliferation, differentiation, and migration, which results in cartilage and bone healing and regeneration.

Peptide Conjugate on Multilayer Graphene Oxide Film for the Osteogenic Differentiation of Human Wharton's Jelly-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Graphene oxide (GO) is extensively studied as a template material for mesenchymal stem cell application due to its two-dimensional nature and unique functionalization chemistries. Herein, a new type of peptide-conjugated multilayer graphene oxide (peptide/m-GO film) was fabricated and used as biomaterial for culturing human Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJ-MSCs). The characterization of the peptide/m-GO films was performed, and the biocompatibility of the WJ-MSCs on the peptide/m-GO films was investigated. The results demonstrated that the peptide conjugate on the m-GO film did not hamper the normal growth of WJ-MSCs but supported the growth of WJ-MSCs after the 6-day culture period. In addition, the osteogenic differentiation of WJ-MSCs on the peptide/m-GO films was enhanced as compared with the parent m-GO film. Therefore, such peptide-conjugated m-GO films could provide a highly biocompatible and multifunctional 2D material to tailor the potential application of WJ-MSCs in bone tissue regeneration.

Graphene and its derivatives: understanding the main chemical and medicinal chemistry roles for biomedical applications

Over the past few years, there has been a growing potential use of graphene and its derivatives in several biomedical areas, such as drug delivery systems, biosensors, and imaging systems, especially for having excellent optical, electronic, thermal, and mechanical properties. Therefore, nanomaterials in the graphene family have shown promising results in several areas of science. The different physicochemical properties of graphene and its derivatives guide its biocompatibility and toxicity. Hence, further studies to explain the interactions of these nanomaterials with biological systems are fundamental. This review has shown the applicability of the graphene family in several biomedical modalities, with particular attention for cancer therapy and diagnosis, as a potent theranostic. This ability is derivative from the considerable number of forms that the graphene family can assume. The graphene-based materials biodistribution profile, clearance, toxicity, and cytotoxicity, interacting with biological systems, are discussed here, focusing on its synthesis methodology, physicochemical properties, and production quality. Despite the growing increase in the bioavailability and toxicity studies of graphene and its derivatives, there is still much to be unveiled to develop safe and effective formulations.

Estimation of Number of Graphene Layers Using Different Methods: A Focused Review

Graphene, a two-dimensional nanosheet, is composed of carbon species (sp² hybridized carbon atoms) and is the center of attention for researchers due to its extraordinary physicochemical (e.g., optical transparency, electrical, thermal conductivity, and mechanical) properties. Graphene can be synthesized using top-down or bottom-up approaches and is used in the electronics and medical (e.g., drug delivery, tissue engineering, biosensors) fields as well as in photovoltaic systems. However, the mass production of graphene and the means of transferring monolayer graphene for commercial purposes are still under investigation. When graphene layers are stacked as flakes, they have substantial impacts on the properties of graphene-based materials, and the layering of graphene obtained using different approaches varies. The determination of number of graphene layers is very important since the properties exhibited by monolayer graphene decrease as the number of graphene layer per flake increases to 5 as few-layer graphene, 10 as multilayer graphene, and more than 10 layers, when it behaves like bulk graphite. Thus, this review summarizes graphene developments and production. In addition, the efficacies of determining the number of graphene layers using various characterization methods (e.g., transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra and mapping, and spin hall effect-based methods) are compared. Among these methods, TEM and Raman spectra were found to be most promising to determine number of graphene layers and their stacking order.

Influence of the Surface Chemistry of Graphene Oxide on the Structure-Property Relationship of Waterborne Poly(urethane urea) Adhesive

Small amounts-0.04 wt.%-graphene oxide derivatives with different surface chemistry (graphene oxide-GO-, amine-functionalized GO-A-GO-, reduced GO-r-GO) were added during prepolymer formation in the synthesis of waterborne poly(urethane urea) dispersions (PUDs). Covalent interactions between the surface groups on the graphene oxide derivatives and the end NCO groups of the prepolymer were created, these interactions differently altered the degree of micro-phase separation of the PUDs and their structure-properties relationships. The amine functional groups on the A-GO surface reacted preferentially with the prepolymer, producing new urea hard domains and higher percentage of soft segments than in the PUD without GO derivative. All GO derivatives were well dispersed into the PU matrix. The PUD without GO derivative showed the most noticeable shear thinning and the addition of the GO derivative reduced the extent of shear thinning differently depending on its functional chemistry. The free urethane groups were dominant in all PUs and the addition of the GO derivative increased the percentage of the associated by hydrogen bond urethane groups. As a consequence, the addition of GO derivative caused a lower degree of micro-phase separation. All PUs containing GO derivatives exhibited an additional thermal decomposition at 190-206 °C which was ascribed to the GO derivative-poly(urethane urea) interactions, the lowest temperature corresponded to PU+A-GO. The PUs exhibited two structural relaxations, their temperatures decreased by adding the GO derivative, and the values of the maximum of tan delta in PU+r-GO and PU+A-GO were significantly higher than in the rest. The addition of the GO derivative increased the elongation-at-break, imparted some toughening, and increased the adhesion of the PUD. The highest T-peel strength values corresponded to the joints made with PUD+GO and PUD+r-GO, and a rupture of the substrate was obtained.

Influence of Breast Implant Surface Finishing on Physicochemical and Mechanical Properties before and after Extreme Degradation Studies

The influence of the surface finishing of breast implants on physicochemical and mechanical properties, before and after extreme degradation experiments, was investigated in this study. Removal of superficial layers after degradation was verified for both smooth and rough membranes, in which local erosion was verified. FTIR results demonstrated the generation of low-molecular-weight structures in all samples due to exposure to acidic and basic environments. Furthermore, smooth samples presented higher degrees of crosslinking than rough samples. Considering the mechanical properties, no difference was verified between smooth and rough samples as received and after degradation studies. However, the pH of the degradation solution had an influence on mechanical properties of the material and a basic environment caused greater deterioration of the mechanical properties compared to acidic conditions.

Influence of Different Conditioning Treatments on the Bond Integrity of Root Dentin to rGO Infiltrated Dentin Adhesive. SEM, EDX, FTIR and MicroRaman Study

The present study aimed to synthesize and equate the mechanical properties and dentin interaction of two adhesives; experimental adhesive (EA) and 5 wt.% reduced graphene oxide rGO) containing adhesive. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Micro-Raman spectroscopy, push-out bond strength test, and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were employed to study nano-bond strength, degree of conversion (DC), and adhesive-dentin interaction. The EA was prepared, and rGO particles were added to produce two adhesive groups, EA-rGO-0% (control) and rGO-5%. The canals of sixty roots were shaped and prepared, and fiber posts were cemented. The specimens were further alienated into groups based on the root canal disinfection technique, including 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), Photodynamic therapy (PDT), and ER-CR-YSGG laser (ECYL). The rGO nanoparticles were flake-shaped, and EDX confirmed the presence of carbon (C). Micro-Raman spectroscopy revealed distinct peaks for graphene. Push-out bond strength test demonstrated highest values for the EA-rGO-0% group after NaOCl and PDT conditioning whereas, rGO-5% showed higher values after ECYL conditioning. EA-rGO-0% presented greater DC than rGO-5% adhesive. The rGO-5% adhesive demonstrated comparable push-out bond strength and rheological properties to the controls. The rGO-5% demonstrated acceptable DC (although lower than control group), appropriate dentin interaction, and resin tag establishment.

Ultrasound Imaging and Antithrombotic Effects of PLA-Combined Fe3O4-GO-ASA Multifunctional Nanobubbles

PLA-combined ferroferric oxide-graphene oxide-aspirin (Fe3O4-GO-ASA) multifunctional nanobubbles were prepared using the double emulsion-solvent evaporation method. The obtained composite nanobubbles had a regular spherical shape, Zeta potential of (-36.5 ± 10.0) mV, and particle size distribution range of 200-700 nm. The experimental results showed that PLA-combined Fe3O4-GO-ASA nanobubbles could effectively improve the antithrombin parameters of PT, TT, APTT, and INR, and significantly inhibit thrombosis when the composite nanobubbles with a concentration of 80 mg·mL-1 interacted with the rabbit blood. The prepared composite nanobubbles could reach a significant ultrasonic imaging effect and good magnetic targeting under the magnetic field when the nanobubbles' concentration was only 60 mg·mL-1.

Advances in Drug Delivery Nanosystems Using Graphene-Based Materials and Carbon Nanotubes

Carbon is one of the most abundant elements on Earth. In addition to the well-known crystallographic modifications such as graphite and diamond, other allotropic carbon modifications such as graphene-based nanomaterials and carbon nanotubes have recently come to the fore. These carbon nanomaterials can be designed to help deliver or target drugs more efficiently and to innovate therapeutic approaches, especially for cancer treatment, but also for the development of new diagnostic agents for malignancies and are expected to help combine molecular imaging for diagnosis with therapies. This paper summarizes the latest designed drug delivery nanosystems based on graphene, graphene quantum dots, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes, mainly for anticancer therapy.

Responses of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants to Engineered Nanoparticles

Medicinal and aromatic plants have been used by mankind since ancient times. This is primarily due to their healing effects associated with their specific secondary metabolites (some of which are also used as drugs in modern medicine), or their structures, served as a basis for the development of new effective synthetic drugs. One way to increase the production of these secondary metabolites is to use nanoparticles that act as elicitors. However, depending on the specific particle size, composition, concentration, and route of application, nanoparticles may have several other benefits on medicinal and aromatic plants (e.g., increased plant growth, improved photosynthesis, and overall performance). On the other hand, particularly at applications of high concentrations, they are able to damage plants mechanically, adversely affect morphological and biochemical characteristics of plants, and show cytotoxic and genotoxic effects. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the beneficial and adverse effects of metal-, metalloid-, and carbon-based nanoparticles on the germination, growth, and biochemical characteristics of a wide range of medicinal and aromatic plants, including the corresponding mechanisms of action. The positive impact of nanopriming and application of nanosized fertilizers on medicinal and aromatic plants is emphasized. Special attention is paid to the effects of various nanoparticles on the production of valuable secondary metabolites in these plants cultivated in hydroponic systems, soil, hairy root, or in vitro cultures. The beneficial impact of nanoparticles on the alleviation of abiotic stresses in medicinal and aromatic plants is also discussed.

Graphene-Based Scaffolds for Regenerative Medicine

Leading-edge regenerative medicine can take advantage of improved knowledge of key roles played, both in stem cell fate determination and in cell growth/differentiation, by mechano-transduction and other physicochemical stimuli from the tissue environment. This prompted advanced nanomaterials research to provide tissue engineers with next-generation scaffolds consisting of smart nanocomposites and/or hydrogels with nanofillers, where balanced combinations of specific matrices and nanomaterials can mediate and finely tune such stimuli and cues. In this review, we focus on graphene-based nanomaterials as, in addition to modulating nanotopography, elastic modulus and viscoelastic features of the scaffold, they can also regulate its conductivity. This feature is crucial to the determination and differentiation of some cell lineages and is of special interest to neural regenerative medicine. Hereafter we depict relevant properties of such nanofillers, illustrate how problems related to their eventual cytotoxicity are solved via enhanced synthesis, purification and derivatization protocols, and finally provide examples of successful applications in regenerative medicine on a number of tissues.

Antibacterial and antibiofilm properties of graphene and its derivatives

Infections resulting from bacteria and biofilms have become a huge problem threatening human health. In recent years, the antibacterial and antibiofilm effects of graphene and its derivatives have been extensively studied. However, there continues to be some controversy over whether graphene and its derivatives can resist infection and biofilms. Moreover, the antibacterial mechanism and cytotoxicity of graphene and its derivatives are unclear. In the present review, antibacterial and antibiofilm abilities of graphene and its derivatives in solution, on the surface are reviewed, and their toxicity and possible mechanisms are also reviewed. Furthermore, we propose possible future development directions for graphene and its derivatives in antibacterial and antibiofilm applications.

Chronic Inflammatory Diseases, Anti-Inflammatory Agents and Their Delivery Nanosystems

Inflammatory diseases, whether caused by excessive stress on certain tissues/parts of the body or arising from infections accompanying autoimmune or secondary diseases, have become a problem, especially in the Western world today. Whether these are inflammations of visceral organs, joints, bones, or the like, they are always a physiological reaction of the body, which always tries to eradicate noxious agents and restore tissue homeostasis. Unfortunately, this often results in damage, often irreversible, to the affected tissues. Nevertheless, these inflammatory reactions of the body are the results of excessive stress, strain, and the generally unhealthy environment, in which the people of Western civilization live. The pathophysiology and pathobiochemistry of inflammatory/autoimmune processes are being studied in deep detail, and pharmaceutical companies are constantly developing new drugs that modulate/suppress inflammatory responses and endogenous pro-inflammatory agents. In addition to new specifically targeted drugs for a variety of pro-inflammatory agents, a strategy can be found for the use of older drugs, which are formulated into special nanodrug delivery systems with targeted distribution and often modified release. This contribution summarizes the current state of research and development of nanoformulated anti-inflammatory agents from both conventional drug classes and experimental drugs or dietary supplements used to alleviate inflammatory reactions.

Graphene oxide aggravated dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis through intestinal epithelial cells autophagy dysfunction

Graphene oxide (GO) is one of the most promising nanomaterials used in biomedicine. However, studies about its adverse effects on the intestine in state of inflammation remain limited. This study aimed to explore the underlying effects of GO on intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) in vitro and colitis in vivo. We found that GO could exert toxic effects on NCM460 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner and promote inflammation. Furthermore, GO caused lysosomal dysfunction and then blockaded autophagy flux. Moreover, pharmacological autophagy inhibitor 3-Methyladenine could reverse GO-induced LC3B and p62 expression levels, reduce expression levels of IL-6, IL-8, TLR4, and CXCL2, and increase the level of IL-10. In vivo, C57BL/6 mice were treated with 2.5% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in drinking water for five consecutive days to induce colitis. Then, GO at 60 mg/kg dose was administered through the oral route every two days from day 2 to day 8. These results showed that GO aggravated DSS-induced colitis, characterized by shortening of the colon and severe pathological changes, and induced autophagy. In conclusion, GO caused the abnormal autophagy in IECs and exacerbated DSS-induced colitis in mice. Our research indicated that GO may contribute to the development of intestinal inflammation by inducing IECs autophagy dysfunction.

Design of graphenic nanocomposites containing chitosan and polyethylene glycol for spinal cord injury improvement

Advanced therapeutic strategies include the incorporation of biomaterials, which has been identified as an effective method in treating unsolved diseases, such as spinal cord injury. During the acute phase, cascade responses involving cystic cavitation, fibrous glial scar formation, and myelin-associated dissuasive accumulation occur in the microenvironment of the spinal cord lesion. Graphene oxide (GO)-based materials, due to their extraordinary chemical, electrical and mechanical properties and easy to modify structure, are considered as rising stars in biomaterial and tissue engineering. In order to enhance the biodegradability and biocompatibility of GO, cell proliferation may be appropriately designed and situated at the lesion site. In this study, chitosan (CS) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were grafted onto GO sheets. CS is a natural non-toxic polymer with good solubility and high biocompatible potential that has been used as an anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant agent. Furthermore, PEG, a synthetic neuroprotective polymer, was used to develop the pharmacokinetic activity and reduce the toxicity of GO. Herein we report a novel nanocomposite consisting of PEG and CS with a potential advantage in spinal tissue regeneration. The preliminary in vitro study on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) has demonstrated that the prepared nanocomposites are not only non-toxic but also increase (by nearly 10%) cell growth. Finally, the use of mixed nanocomposites in the spinal cord injury (SCI) model resulted in good repair and inflammation decline after two weeks, such that walking and functional recovery scores of the hind limbs of mice were improved by an average of 6 points in the treatment group.

Herein we report a novel nanocomposite consisting of PEG and CS with a potential advantage in spinal tissue regeneration.

Recent advances in graphene-family nanomaterials for effective drug delivery and phototherapy

INTRODUCTION

Owing to the unique properties of graphene, including large specific surface area, excellent thermal conductivity, and optical absorption, graphene-family nanomaterials (GFNs) have attracted extensive attention in biomedical applications, particularly in drug delivery and phototherapy.

AREAS COVERED

In this review, we point out several challenges involved in the clinical application of GFNs. Then, we provide an overview of the most recent publications about GFNs in biomedical applications, including diverse strategies for improving the biocompatibility, specific targeting and stimuli-responsiveness of GFNs for drug delivery, codelivery of drug and gene, photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, and multimodal combination therapy.

EXPERT OPINION

Although the application of GFNs is still in the preclinical stage, rational modification of GFNs with functional elements or making full use of GFNs-based multimodal combination therapy might show great potential in biomedicine for clinical application.

Recent Advances in Zinc Oxide Nanostructures with Antimicrobial Activities

This article reviews the recent developments in the synthesis, antibacterial activity, and visible-light photocatalytic bacterial inactivation of nano-zinc oxide. Polycrystalline wurtzite ZnO nanostructures with a hexagonal lattice having different shapes can be synthesized by means of vapor-, liquid-, and solid-phase processing techniques. Among these, ZnO hierarchical nanostructures prepared from the liquid phase route are commonly used for antimicrobial activity. In particular, plant extract-mediated biosynthesis is a single step process for preparing nano-ZnO without using surfactants and toxic chemicals. The phytochemical molecules of natural plant extracts are attractive agents for reducing and stabilizing zinc ions of zinc salt precursors to form green ZnO nanostructures. The peel extracts of certain citrus fruits like grapefruits, lemons and oranges, acting as excellent chelating agents for zinc ions. Furthermore, phytochemicals of the plant extracts capped on ZnO nanomaterials are very effective for killing various bacterial strains, leading to low minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values. Bioactive phytocompounds from green ZnO also inhibit hemolysis of Staphylococcus aureus infected red blood cells and inflammatory activity of mammalian immune system. In general, three mechanisms have been adopted to explain bactericidal activity of ZnO nanomaterials, including direct contact killing, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and released zinc ion inactivation. These toxic effects lead to the destruction of bacterial membrane, denaturation of enzyme, inhibition of cellular respiration and deoxyribonucleic acid replication, causing leakage of the cytoplasmic content and eventual cell death. Meanwhile, antimicrobial activity of doped and modified ZnO nanomaterials under visible light can be attributed to photogeneration of ROS on their surfaces. Thus particular attention is paid to the design and synthesis of visible light-activated ZnO photocatalysts with antibacterial properties.

Potential of Nanonutraceuticals in Increasing Immunity

Nutraceuticals are defined as foods or their extracts that have a demonstrably positive effect on human health. According to the decision of the European Food Safety Authority, this positive effect, the so-called health claim, must be clearly demonstrated best by performed tests. Nutraceuticals include dietary supplements and functional foods. These special foods thus affect human health and can positively affect the immune system and strengthen it even in these turbulent times, when the human population is exposed to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many of these special foods are supplemented with nanoparticles of active substances or processed into nanoformulations. The benefits of nanoparticles in this case include enhanced bioavailability, controlled release, and increased stability. Lipid-based delivery systems and the encapsulation of nutraceuticals are mainly used for the enrichment of food products with these health-promoting compounds. This contribution summarizes the current state of the research and development of effective nanonutraceuticals influencing the body's immune responses, such as vitamins (C, D, E, B12, folic acid), minerals (Zn, Fe, Se), antioxidants (carotenoids, coenzyme Q10, polyphenols, curcumin), omega-3 fatty acids, and probiotics.
