Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood Obesity causes potential changes in sensory input and disrupts postural control and stability. Implementing balance exercises has been shown to improve postural impairment, enhance motor task development, and reduce the risk of injury in this population. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study is to discover balance exercises to enhance postural control in overweight and obese children. DESIGN Systematic literature review. METHODS A comprehensive search was conducted across five electronic databases to find randomized controlled/randomized controlled clinical/Quasi-experimental studies pertaining to balance control exercises and childhood obesity. Each reviewer used the PEDro scale to independently assess the data that was retrieved from studies that satisfied the inclusion criteria. A risk-of-bias assessment was also conducted. RESULTS After fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 4 articles were assimilated in the systematic review. Two independent authors verified and screened data, third author double-checked and searched for additional articles. The PEDro scale rated the studies as moderate to good (scores >6), with minimal bias. Key biases stemmed from the lack of blinding and concealment. CONCLUSION There is strong evidence suggesting that balance exercise not only enhance stability but also address the difficulties associated with excess body weight. Thus, the integration of balance exercises in the regimen of overweight and obese children proves effective in advancing postural control.

Abstract
Obesity is a complex, chronic condition characterised by excess adiposity. Rates of obesity in childhood and adolescence are increasing worldwide, with a corresponding increase in adulthood. The aetiology of obesity is multifactorial and results from a combination of endocrine, genetic, environmental and societal factors. Population level approaches to reduce the prevalence of childhood obesity worldwide are urgently needed. There are wide-ranging complications from excess weight affecting every system in the body, which lead to significant morbidity and reduced life expectancy. Treatment of obesity and its complications requires a multi-faceted, biopsychosocial approach incorporating dietary, exercise and psychological treatments. Pharmacological treatments for treating childhood obesity have recently become available, and there is further development of new anti-obesity medications in the pipeline. In addition, bariatric surgery is being increasingly recognised as a treatment option for obesity in adolescence providing the potential to reverse complications related to excess weight. In this review, we present an update on the prevalence, aetiology, complications and treatment of childhood obesity.

Abstract
Research suggests that larger food portion sizes (PS) during a meal or snack increase daily energy intake in children. However, it remains unclear whether this 'PS effect' would lead to a sustained increase in consumption and affect body adiposity. This systematic review assesses the evidence for a relationship between served, consumed, and preferred PS (food or drink size in grams or kcal) and indexes of adiposity (e.g., BMI percentile, BMI z-scores) in children (< 19 years). A total of 17 articles were identified using six electronic databases (PsycINFO, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global). Articles were screened independently by 2 researchers; 21 studies were included (15 cross-sectional, 2 experimental, 1 case study, 1 longitudinal, and two interventions). A narrative review was conducted due to high levels of heterogeneity. Cross-sectional and experimental studies (n = 13) reported positive associations between PS and adiposity, but results differed according to the sex/gender of the participants and food type. Interventions (n = 2) showed that portion size reduction may be effective in reducing child adiposity. Due to the limited evidence on the causality and direction of the effect, and over-reliance on cross-sectional studies, more evidence on the longer-term impact of PS on indexes of body adiposity is required.

Abstract
Introduction Worldwide obesity among children, especially among schoolers, has drastically increased over the years. The condition is the same in India, one of the largest democracies in the world. We conducted this study to understand the current state of obesity among schoolers in India and the factors that contribute to it. Methods This cross-sectional survey was done to determine the prevalence of obesity and investigate the connection between different underlying factors and obesity among schoolers at multiple private schools in Ranchi, Jharkhand, from January 2024 to September 2024. Height, weight, and BMI were calculated by using a calibrated weighing scale and stadiometer. A sociodemographic pro forma was used to determine the underlying factors contributing to obesity and overweight, while a standard questionnaire evaluated the related factors. Descriptive statistics were employed to assess the frequency and percentage of sociodemographic characteristics and the prevalence of obesity and overweight, whereas correlation coefficients and linear regression were used to find any relationship between sociodemographic determinants and overweight and obesity. Results The research revealed that the majority of the samples were predominantly female, representing 51.6%. Hinduism comprised 89.3% of the samples. Moreover, 51.6% of the samples were from the fifth grade. A notable 92.7% of the samples were from non-tribal ethnicities. The average BMI of pupils was 18, with an SD of 11.4. We found 2.8% of the total students as overweight, 59.5% as underweight, and 37.7% as normal weight in our survey. There was a strong link between BMI and variables like eating processed foods and ethnicity (processed foods: R = 0.135, R² = 0.0181, F = 5.30, p = 0.022; ethnicity: R = 0.132, R² = 0.0175, F = 5.10, p = 0.025). Conclusions This study revealed a gradual increase in obesity, especially in regions previously characterized by significant undernutrition. This study validates the notable disparities in obesity rates between tribal and nontribal ethnic groups and has a direct link with the consumption of processed food. The study's findings highlight the necessity for additional research in this domain.

Abstract
Background Childhood overweight (OW) and obesity (OB) have become a serious public health concern worldwide. The objective of this study is to investigate the association between the levels of birth weight (BW) and OB and central OB in Chinese primary school children. Methods A school-based longitudinal study was conducted from 2016 to 2019. Information of children and parents were gained from both children and parents' questionnaires. Longitudinal anthropometric data were obtained from annual health check. BW (kg) was categorized into 4 groups [<3.0, 3.0-3.4, 3.5-3.9 and ≥ 4.0 (macrosomia)]. Normal weight, OW and OB were defined based on sex-specific and age-specific body mass index (BMI). Central OB was identified using sex-specific waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). Results Around 14.5 and 15.6% of 1,204 children had low BW (<3.0 kg) and macrosomia, respectively. The overall rate of OB and central OB at 7-10 years were 10.4 and 28.3%, respectively. Linear-shaped relationships were observed between BW and anthropometric values in both sexes at 7-10 years and 11-13 years. A J-shaped relationship was found between BW and WHtR in boys at 11-13 years. Higher BW status were associated with increased adjusted odds of OB in children (3.5-3.9: OR: 1.5, CI 95%: 1.1-2.0; macrosomia OR: 1.4, CI 95%: 1.0-2.0). Conclusion Higher levels of BW (≥ 3.5 kg) were associated with an increased risk of OB in children, but not central OB. The results can support public health specialists for future research and improvement of strategies for childhood obesity prevention.

Abstract
Purpose: Motor competence is negatively associated with body mass index (BMI) in young people. However, it is still unclear whether motor competence is linked to the risk of obesity in adolescents and longitudinal evidence is missing. The main purpose of this study was to assess the association between motor competence and risk of obesity across adolescence. Methods: A 2-year follow-up study was conducted with a total of 122 adolescents (59.8% girls) aged 12 to 13 years at baseline. Motor competence (KTK), weight status (BMI) and physical activity (questionnaire) were assessed at three time points. Generalized estimating equation and logistic regression models were conducted to examine the relationships between motor competence and weight status, adjusting for potential confounders (i.e. age, sex and physical activity). Results: Motor competence and BMI were inversely related over time. The chance to have overweight/obesity decreased by 6.5% and 8% with a 10-point increase in motor competence across time. In addition, adolescents had 6.4 to 8.2 greater chance to have low motor competence with a 1-point increase in BMI across time. Conclusion: Motor competence is inversely associated with the risk of overweight/obesity across adolescence. Therefore, the development of motor competence can be a protection factor against excessive weight gain. As such, we recommend the development of motor competence as a strategy to prevent pediatric obesity through diversified types of physical activities such as sports, active play and physical education classes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Children and young people living with severe obesity experience a range of complications of excess weight (CEW); however the prevalence of complications is not well defined. We have evaluated baseline characteristics and CEW of patients from two UK tier 3 paediatric weight management services. METHODS All new patients aged 2-17 years seen from March 2022 to February 2023 were included. Baseline demographic data was collected, and patients screened for CEW. PedsQL-4.0 questionnaires were used to assess health-related quality of life (HRQL). RESULTS 185 patients were included, median age 14.3 years (range 3.3-18.0), 50.8% were girls. Of the patients, 73.8% were white British, with a significant excess of patients living in the most deprived decile (41.4%). Median body mass index SD score was +3.55 (IQR 3.11-3.90) and median body fat was 49.3% (IQR 42.3%-55.1%). Autistic spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and learning difficulties were vastly over-represented.Dyslipidaemia was the most common (51.6%) complication, followed by hypertension (28.9%), metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (17.8%), obstructive sleep apnoea (9.0%) and idiopathic intracranial hypertension (4.3%). Mean glycated haemoglobin was 35.0 mmol/mol (IQR 33-38). 8.1% had type 2 diabetes mellitus. Many of these complications were detected through screening in CEW clinics.Both child-reported (mean 51.9/100) and parented-reported (47.8/100) HRQL scores were low. Mental health problems were common: 26.2% with anxiety and 7.7% with depression. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates the significant and profound mental and organ-specific pathology resulting from severe obesity in childhood, highlighting the clinical necessity for CEW clinics. A rigorous approach to identify complications at an early stage is essential to improve long-term health outcomes.

Abstract
Introduction Obesity in adolescents is associated with reduced physical activity and athletic engagement, highlighting the need for tailored physical education programs. This study evaluated the effects of a 7-week adapted basketball program on the performance and athletic engagement of students with obesity. Methods Sixty-two students with obesity (23 boys, 39 girls, aged 15-17) were randomly assigned to an experimental group (EG, n = 30; 11 boys, 19 girls) participating in adapted basketball sessions or a control group (CG, n = 32; 12 boys, 20 girls) attending standard basketball lessons. Both groups completed 52-minute sessions twice weekly. Pre- and post-intervention assessments included a questionnaire evaluating perceptions of physical education and athletic performance during final matches. Results The EG showed significant improvements in interest, motivation (p < 0.05), perceived competence (p < 0.001), and reduced exercise difficulty (p < 0.001). Perceived fitness levels increased significantly only in EG girls (p = 0.013). In contrast, no significant changes were observed in the CG before and after the intervention for any of the parameters. During matches, the EG outperformed the CG, with more successful shots (girls: p = 0.0004; boys: p = 0.012), fewer missed shots (girls: p = 0.033; boys: p = 0.046), and more successful passes (p = 0.032, η² = 0.042). Discussion These results demonstrate that adapted physical education programs can serve as effective interventions for improving physical activity and promoting inclusion among adolescents with obesity while also serving as a preventive measure against obesity.

Abstract
Introduction Obesity, characterized by abnormal fat accumulation, has become a significant global health concern. The prevalence of obesity in preschool children is rising across regions, highlighting the need for a thorough analysis of risk factors and effective interventions to address this growing epidemic. The aim of this study was to identify and analyze the main risk factors for the development of obesity in preschool children and explore effective interventions. Methods We collected clinical data from 910 preschool children who underwent a physical examination at our hospital from January 2023 to December 2023. Based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, we categorized the children into two groups: the obesity group (149 cases) and the non-obesity group (761 cases). Using univariate analysis and logistic regression modeling, we identified risk factors associated with obesity development. Results Out of the 910 children, 149 were diagnosed as obese, representing 16.37% of the total. High birth weight, high parental body mass index (BMI), picky eating habits, preference for meat, frequent consumption of junk food, and binge eating were found to be significant risk factors for obesity in preschool children. Meanwhile, higher parental education levels and longer daily outdoor activity times were considered protective factors against obesity. Discussion Effective interventions targeting the above risk factors are necessary to minimize the incidence of obesity and promote the healthy development of children.

Abstract
PURPOSE The prevalence of obesity, along with that of its associated health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, and liver diseases, such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is increasing annually. Bariatric surgery is indicated for the treatment of obesity if conservative treatment fails. While various liver fibrosis scores have been proposed for assessing liver function, they are typically used prior to bariatric surgery. This study aimed to determine whether fibrosis scores calculated from non-invasive parameters are effective in monitoring liver function after bariatric surgery. METHODS This study analyzed data from 151 patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and were followed up at 3, 6, 9, 12, 24, and 36 months postoperatively. From the routinely collected parameters, liver fibrosis scores (APRI, Fib-4, BARD, Forns index [FORNS], Lok score [LOK], and NAFLD scores) were calculated retrospectively and compared to diabetes status % excess weight loss (%EWL) and % total weight loss (%TWL) over a 3-year follow-up period. RESULTS After SG, APRI, FORNS, and NAFLD scores showed significant improvements, whereas Fib-4, BARD, and LOK scores did not improve. Similarly, body mass index, %EWL, %TWL, and diabetes status also improved significantly. Throughout the 3-year follow-up period, only the APRI and NAFLD scores showed significant improvement. CONCLUSION Only APRI and NAFLD scores changed significantly after SG. Thus, these two scores may be used to reflect and monitor liver function in patients who have undergone SG.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated the prevalence trends of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in children and adolescents with obesity by systematically analyzing global data. Additionally, it aimed to compare regional disparities and criteria used to identify at-risk subpopulations among this demographic group. METHODS We searched three major databases, i.e., PubMed-Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science, from inception to August 31, 2023, yielding 2432 articles. We included original research papers reporting MetS prevalence among children and adolescents with obesity, irrespective of their regions and MetS diagnostic criteria used. We aggregated prevalence estimates using random-effects models to obtain the overall prevalence and conducted subgroup analyses for MetS criteria and study regions. RESULTS We included 57 studies, amounting to 27,923 participants. The overall prevalence of MetS in participants with obesity varied greatly across studies, ranging from 2.1% to 74.4%, with an average prevalence of 29.4%. This high prevalence of MetS was further supported by a meta-analysis comprising 57 studies that further strengthened the observation of a high prevalence of MetS, revealing an overall prevalence of 26% (95% CI: 0.22-0.30; I2 = 98%). CONCLUSIONS Children and adolescents with obesity face a heightened risk of developing MetS. There is a pressing need for heightened attention to this issue, particularly in low- and middle-income countries such as those in sub-Saharan Africa.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood obesity is significantly influenced by maternal exposure to Per and Poly-Fluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) during pregnancy. PFAS exposure occurs through the Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor (PPAR-γ) receptor, leading to increased fat deposition and profound health effects in child growth and development. Despite ongoing investigations, the relationship between maternal serum PFAS concentration and child obesity requires further exploration. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to review the possible effects of Per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances exposure and their mechanism in overweight/obese children from pregnant ladies. METHODS A detailed literature survey was conducted using online databases, including Science Direct, Google Scholar, Scopus, Cochrane, and PubMed. The study focused on the diverse effects of PFAS on maternal and child health, with particular emphasis on neurological complications. RESULTS Child growth development depends upon breastfeeding and placenta health, which is disrupted by PFAS exposure, ultimately destroying the body mass index of the child. Neurotoxicity testing utilized the SH-SY5Y human-derived cell line as an in vitro model, revealing PFAS-induced increases in adipocyte number, reduced cell size, altered lipid conglomeration, increased adiposity, and changes in liver function. in vivo studies in mice and human cell lines indicated PPAR-γ and ER-α activation, leading to adiposity and weight gain through Estrogen signaling and Lipid metabolism. PFAS concentrations positively correlated in maternal sera, analyzed by liquid chromatography/quadrupole mass spectrometry. CONCLUSION PFAS, with a long half-life of 3.5-8.5 years, is commonly found in the serum of pregnant women, crossing the placenta barrier. This exposure disrupts placental homeostasis, negatively impacting mechanisms of action and potentially leading to deterioration in pregnancy and child health. Further research is needed to comprehensively understand the complex interplay between PFAS exposure and its implications for maternal and child well-being.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Overweight and obesity are important concerns for global health. They are characterized by excessive fat accumulation that can harm health. Childhood obesity has reached alarming levels around the world due to urbanization and changes in lifestyle. This trend highlights an urgent need for effective public health strategies to promote healthier lifestyles, prevent chronic diseases, and support the wellbeing of future generations. This study aimed to monitor the impact of the risk factors on blood pressure and lipid profile parameters. METHODS Data were collected from 267 school-age children from Slovakia. The study assessed blood pressure using the sphygmomanometer technique, where systolic (SBP) and diastolic (DBP) blood pressure were measured in a seated position and repeated three times. The pulse rate was evaluated using Ruffier's physical fitness test. Anthropometric measurements included body weight, height, waist circumference, hip, and chest circumference, body mass index (BMI), and fat skinfolds measurement. The children's parents completed a comprehensive questionnaire. The data were statistically evaluated using IBM-SPSS version 19. RESULTS Our analysis showed a statistically significant difference in SBP between obese and non-obese children (p < 0.001), but no significant differences for DBP and total cholesterol. Similar results were found between normal-weight and overweight children for SBP (p < 0.001), with overweight children showing higher SBP. No significant differences were noted for DBP or total cholesterol. Among children with "bad fitness", 57.9% had elevated SBP, compared to 37.86% with "good fitness" (p < 0.01). Additionally, 41.67% of children with bad fitness had elevated DBP, versus 23.05% in good fitness (p < 0.001). Significant differences in total cholesterol were also observed in these two groups (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study confirm the importance of monitoring risk factors that significantly influence cardiovascular parameters.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Identify themes essential to implementing policy, system, and environmental (PSE) interventions within kindergarten to 12th-grade (K-12) settings and provide associated indicators of readiness and capacity to support healthy eating PSE work among Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) practitioners in Ohio. DESIGN Interview data were collected in Ohio from December, 2020 to May, 2021. PARTICIPANTS Ohio SNAP-Ed practitioners (n = 12), community residents with low income (n = 26), and K-12 experts statewide (n = 10) and nationally (n = 3). PHENOMENON OF INTEREST Healthy eating PSE implementation. ANALYSIS We conducted a qualitative analysis to identify themes and indicators related to implementing healthy eating PSEs in schools. During virtual consensus conferences (December, 2021-April, 2022), themes and indicators were sorted and ranked by perceived importance to PSE implementation. RESULTS Four themes and 14 indicators were identified. Expert-derived weights quantified the themes' importance to PSE implementation efforts in K-12. Themes included: (1) school system support and capacity (weight 0.372), (2) school food environment (0.278), (3) SNAP-Ed practitioner capacity and resources (0.192), and (4) familial influence and awareness (0.158). CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Findings provide guidance for tailoring healthy eating PSEs in K-12 schools using local levels of readiness and capacity. Results highlight targeted areas of focus to support the implementation of healthy eating PSE interventions in K-12 schools through SNAP-Ed programming in diverse contexts. Future research is needed on the applicability of these findings based on feedback from school district staff and community members with children in different school settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To recognize and address Patau's syndrome, despite its rarity and associated low life expectancy, through the presentation of a case study of a 2-year-old patient receiving Home Care services. CASE DESCRIPTION We present a female patient who defied the odds with a prolonged survival, possible due to Home Care. She was delivered via cesarean section at 31 weeks + 4 days due to restricted uterine growth. The mother, aged 36, had received proper prenatal care and was in good health. The diagnosis of Patau's syndrome was confirmed through karyotyping after birth. Despite the severe clinical nature of the case, the patient, now with two years old, receives specialized home-based care, supported by a tracheostomy and gastrostomy. A dedicated 24-hour nursing technician ensures continuous monitoring, and the patient benefits from regular medical check-ups, physiotherapy five times a week, weekly speech therapy sessions, monthly consultations with a nutritionist, and ongoing psychological support for her family members. COMMENTS This multidisciplinary approach has resulted in a slight motor response, highlighting the positive impact of comprehensive care on her overall well-being. The existence of a robust support network for families facing similar challenges is crucial, and a multidisciplinary care can effectively prevent complications associated with this impactful syndrome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Weight misperceptions are common in children and adolescents, which is related to the engagement of weight loss behaviors. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between body weight perception and weight loss behaviors of lower-calorie diets and increased levels of physical activity (PA). METHODS The Ningbo Youth Risk Behavior Survey was conducted from 2007 to 2022. A multistage, stratified cluster sampling procedure was utilized to draw target adolescents aged 12 to 18 years participating in each survey wave (2007, 2012, 2017, 2022). Data of anthropometry, weight perception, and weight loss behaviors were collected through self-administered questionnaires. A binary generalized linear model was used to examine associations between body weight perception and weight loss behaviors of lower calorie diets and increased levels of PA. RESULTS The sample sizes for each survey wave were 777, 885, 1588 and 2638. The prevalence of overweight (OW)/obesity (OB), self-perception of OW/OB and overestimated perception increased from 7.6%, 27.0% and 29.1% in 2007 to 16.3%, 39.9% and 41.4% in 2022, respectively. Adolescents that perceived themselves as OW/OB had higher odds of lower-calorie diets (OR: 4.2, 3.3-5.4) and increased level of PA (OR: 3.8, 2.9-5.0), whereas adolescents that perceived themselves as underweight had lower odds of lower-calorie diets (OR: 0.371, 0.253-0.542) and increased levels of PA (OR: 0.381, 0.295-0.559). CONCLUSION OW, self-perception of OW/OB and overestimated perception were prevalent in Chinese adolescents. Self-perception of OW/OB was positively associated with lower-calorie diets and increased levels of PA. The results can support public health specialists to promote health education of body perception and improve self-esteem in Chinese children and adolescents.

Abstract
Background Sex hormones are crucial for the development of children and adolescents. The increasing consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs) among children and adolescents in the United States (US) has raised concerns about their potential impact on health, including hormonal balance. Methods Data from 3,354 participants aged 6-19 years from the NHANES 2013-2016 were analyzed. UPF intake was categorized using the NOVA food classification system, and the percentage of total daily energy intake from UPFs was calculated. The serum levels of total testosterone (TT), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and estradiol (E2) were measured. The free androgen index (FAI) and TT/E2 ratio were calculated to estimate bioavailable testosterone levels and the balance between androgens and estrogens, respectively. Multiple linear regression models, adjusted for potential confounders, estimated the associations. Results Our results showed that higher intake of UPFs was marginally associated with decreased serum SHBG levels (quartile (Q) 2 vs. Q1: β = -5.3, 95% confidence interval (CI): -17.0, 8.1%; Q3 vs. Q1: β = -14.6, 95%CI: -25.1, -2.5%; Q4 vs. Q1: β = -9.0, 95%CI: -20.3, 3.8%; P trend = 0.081), and significantly associated with increased serum FAI in female adolescents (Q2 vs. Q1: β = 3.2, 95%CI: -3.3, 9.7; Q3 vs. Q1: β = 7.6, 95%CI: -0.7, 16.0; Q4 vs. Q1: β = 9.5, 95%CI: 1.5, 17.6; P trend = 0.019). Additionally, UPF intake showed a marginally positive association with increased serum SHBG levels (P trend = 0.057) in male children and FAI (P trend = 0.150) in male adolescents, respectively. Similar results were observed when participants were stratified by puberty status, except for the association between UPF intake and SHBG in male children. However, there were no associations between UPF consumption and TT, E2, or the TT/E2 ratio, both in males and females. Conclusion Higher UPF consumption is associated with increased FAI in adolescents, particularly in girls, indicating higher bioavailable testosterone levels. Future studies should validate these findings with direct free testosterone measurements and more precise dietary intake assessments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) has been found to be associated with growth and developmental abnormalities in children. However, the potential mechanisms by which exposure to EDCs during pregnancy increases the risk of obesity in children remain unclear. OBJECTIVE We aimed to explore associations between prenatal EDC exposure and the body mass index (BMI) of children at age two, and to further explore the potential impact of DNA methylation (DNAm). METHOD This study included 285 mother-child pairs from a birth cohort conducted in Wuhan, China. The BMI of each child was assessed at around 24 months of age. The concentrations of sixteen EDCs at the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimesters were measured using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. The research utilized general linear models, weighted quantile sum regression, and Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression to assess the association between prenatal EDC exposure and childhood BMI z-scores (BMIz). Cord blood DNAm was measured using the Human Methylation EPIC BeadChip array. An epigenome-wide DNAm association study related to BMIz was performed using robust linear models. Mediation analysis was then applied to explore potential mediators of DNAm. RESULTS Urinary concentrations of seven EDCs were positively associated with BMIz in the 1st trimester, which remained significant in the WQS model. A total of 641 differential DNAm positions were associated with elevated BMIz. Twelve CpG positions (annotated to DUXA, TMEM132C, SEC13, ID4, GRM4, C2CD2, PRAC1&PRAC2, TSPAN6 and DNAH10) mediated the associations between urine BP-3/BPS/MEP/TCS and elevated BMIz (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION Our results revealed that prenatal exposure to EDCs was associated with a higher risk of childhood obesity, with specific DNAm acting as a partial mediator.

Abstract
Obesity is a worldwide increasing concern. Although in adults this is easily estimated with the body mass index, in children, who are constantly growing and whose bodies are changing, the reference points to assess weight status are age and gender, and need corroboration with complementary data, making their quantification highly difficult. The present review explores the interaction spectrum of oxidative stress, selenium status, and obesity in children and adolescents. Any factor related to oxidative stress that triggers obesity and, conversely, obesity that induces oxidative stress are part of a vicious circle, a complex chain of mechanisms that derive from each other and reinforce each other with serious health consequences. Selenium and its compounds exhibit key antioxidant activity and also have a significant role in the nutritional evaluation of obese children. The balance of selenium intake, retention, and metabolism emerges as a vital aspect of health, reflecting the complex interactions between diet, oxidative stress, and obesity. Understanding whether selenium status is a contributor to or a consequence of obesity could inform nutritional interventions and public health strategies aimed at preventing and managing obesity from an early age.

Abstract
AIM This study was conducted to determine the effect of middle and high school students' emotional eating behavior on obesity. METHOD A descriptive, correlational, and cross-sectional study design was used. The sample consisted of 267 students studying in 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. Data were collected using a Child Information Form and the Emotional Eating Scale. The researchers measured the students' height and weight and calculated their body mass indices (BMI), and BMI percentiles were evaluated according to age and gender. Percentage calculations, mean scores, Spearman correlation analysis, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis were used in the analysis of the data. RESULTS Of the students participating in the study, 54.7% were girl and 45.3% were boy. It was determined that 28.4% of the students were overweight and obese. As a result of multiple regression analysis, it was determined that students' emotional eating behavior explained 25% of obesity (p < 0.001). It was found that anxiety-anger- frustration, one of the subscales of the emotional eating scale, was the only variable that significantly predicted students' obesity status (β = 0.387). Emotional eating significantly predicted the obesity status of boy and girl students (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION In this study, it was concluded that students' emotional eating behavior affected obesity. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE In line with these results, it is recommended that studies on other variables that may predict the effect of students' emotional eating behavior on obesity should be conducted and that nurses should contact schools to conduct emotional eating behavior screenings and provide emotional eating education for students who exhibit emotional eating behavior.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Awareness about obesity, its complications, and an age-appropriate, healthy, active lifestyle are essential to maintaining a healthy life. This study aimed to determine the level of awareness Saudi Arabian caregivers have regarding obesity and regular physical activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this cross-sectional study, a survey was conducted among parents in Saudi Arabia using a structured questionnaire. A convenience and snowball sampling method was employed to recruit participants from various regions of Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire assessed parents' knowledge about obesity, its complications, and healthy, active lifestyle practices. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and associations between variables were examined using chi-squared tests. RESULTS In this study, responses from 256 moms in various Saudi Arabian locations were included in the analysis. Merely 35.5% of the participants demonstrated good knowledge about obesity and its complications. Regarding the promotion of a healthy, active lifestyle, only 11.3% of the participants were aware that kids should eat five types of vegetables and fruits daily, whereas 85% were aware that kids should have <2 hours a day of screen time, and 75.4% were aware that kids should be engaged in physical activity for at least one hour daily. CONCLUSION This study highlights a concerning gap in knowledge among caregivers in Saudi Arabia concerning obesity and its consequences, with merely 35.5% of participants demonstrating a good understanding of obesity and its complications. Alarmingly, only a fraction (11.3%) showed awareness of the importance of promoting a healthy, active lifestyle. These findings underscore the urgent need for enhanced awareness initiatives focused on obesity and its prevention to ensure optimal child health development, avert health issues, and strengthen positive dynamics between parents and children.

Abstract
Caregivers' feeding practices are critical in shaping preschool children's eating habits and preventing childhood obesity. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of existing interventions targeting caregivers of preschool children, which aimed to promote child healthy eating and/or manage child weight and/or prevent child nutrition-related problems and included feeding practices as one of the outcomes. Eighteen studies with 18 intervention programs and 3887 respondents that completed baseline evaluations were eligible for data synthesis. Behavior change techniques (BCTs) frequently used included the following: instruction on how to perform the behavior and demonstration of the behavior. The pooled effects of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on pressure to eat (pooled standardized mean difference [SMD] = 0.61; 95%CI: -1.16, -0.06), use of food as a reward (pooled SMD = -0.31; 95%CI: -0.61, -0.01), and emotional feeding (pooled SMD = -0.36; 95%CI: -0.66, -0.06) were found statistically significant compared with control groups at post-intervention. However, there were no pooled effects on restrictive feeding and pressure to eat at other follow-ups or on other feeding practices at post-intervention. Interventions may have short-term effects on decreasing the adoption of coercive control. Future interventions should directly and adequately optimize feeding practices, include components of individual support, and contribute to the maintenance of the effects over the long term.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Restricted linear growth and abnormal weight status are commonly observed among children in low-income countries, possibly due to inadequate protein intake. Considering the role of protein intake and amino acid (AA) synthesis in growth and development, it has been suggested that there may be an association between AA intake and physical growth. We aimed to investigate the association between different types of AA intake and physical growth among children. METHODS A cross-sectional study including 780 six-year-old children referred to 10 health care centers for vaccination between October 2017 and March 2018 was conducted. Anthropometric data was collected using standard methods, and dietary intake was assessed using a validated food-frequency questionnaire (FFQ) in an interview by a trained technician. RESULTS Children in the highest tertile (3rd) of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) intake had a higher weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) (P = 0.02) and body mass index-for-age z-score (BAZ) (P = 0.001) compared to those in the lowest tertile (1st). Interestingly, BAZ was significantly associated with the highest tertile of acidic AA intake (P = 0.04), while an inverse association was observed between the highest tertile of aromatic AA (phenylalanine and tyrosine) intake and BAZ (P = 0.01) . No significant associations were observed between the highest tertile of sulfuric, aliphatic, or neutral AA and BAZ, height-for-age z-score (HAZ) or WAZ. Further, underweight was associated with the 3rd tertile of aromatic, alcoholic, aliphatic or neutral AA and BCAA intake. Aliphatic and neutral AA intake was also increased the risk of overweight. Finally, stunted growth patterns were associated with the highest tertile of acidic, alcoholic. CONCLUSION Findings presented in this study showed that higher BAZ and WAZ are associated with 3rd tertiles of BCAA intake, but lower BAZ were associated with 3rd tertiles of aromatic AA (phenylalanine and tyrosine) intake. Future research in other populations are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
PURPOSE Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease characterized by decreased bone strength and mass, which predisposes patients to fractures and is associated with high morbidity and mortality. Like osteoporosis, obesity and diabetes are systemic metabolic diseases associated with modifiable risk factors and lifestyle, and their prevalence is increasing. They are related to decreased quality of life, functional loss and increased mortality, generating high costs for health systems and representing a worldwide public health problem. Growing evidence reinforces the role of bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) as an influential factor in the bone microenvironment and systemic metabolism. Given the impact of obesity and diabetes on metabolism and their possible effect on the bone microenvironment, changes in BMAT behavior may explain the risk of developing osteoporosis in the presence of these comorbidities. METHODS This study reviewed the scientific literature on the behavior of BMAT in pathological metabolic conditions, such as obesity and diabetes, and its potential involvement in the pathogenesis of bone fragility. RESULTS Published data strongly suggest a relationship between increased BMAT adiposity and the risk of bone fragility in the context of obesity and diabetes. CONCLUSION By secreting a broad range of factors, BMAT modulates the bone microenvironment and metabolism, ultimately affecting skeletal health. A better understanding of the relationship between BMAT expansion and metabolic disturbances observed in diabetic and obese patients will help to identify regulatory pathways and new targets for the treatment of bone-related diseases, with BMAT as a potential therapeutic target.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are few or even rare studies conducted in Cabo Verde (Republic of Cabo Verde) that address the issue of physical fitness and body composition in the juvenile population. This investigation aims to study the physical fitness in children in Cabo Verde: differences between gender, eutrophic, and overweight subjects, between practitioners and non-practitioners of sports. METHODS The sample consisted of 93 individuals aged between 10 and 15 years, from the 2nd and 3rd cycles and secondary school of the Portuguese College based in Cabo Verde. The instruments used for data collection were the FITescola® test battery (Lisboa, Portugal), and the questionnaire Quantification de l'activite physique en altitude chez les enfants (QAPACE) for assessment of physical activity level. Regarding the statistical analysis using the SPSS 23.0 software (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA), the first analysis was performed to verify the distribution of the sample (Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test and Shapiro-Wilk Test). Then, for variables with normal distribution we used the t-test and for the remaining variables with non-normal distribution we used the Mann-Whitney Test, with a significance level of 5%. RESULTS Gender differences were found, in which the male gender obtained more favorable mean values in the "sit-ups," "push-ups," "horizontal impulsion," "shuttle" and "agility" variables, while the females showed superiority in the variables "sit and reach;" differences between the eutrophic and overweight group where, as expected, more favorable mean values for eutrophics than the overweight group in all PF tests. Finally, differences between practitioners and non-practitioners of sports, with the best results being attributed to practitioners of sports. CONCLUSIONS We concluded that male subjects have greater proficiency in strength and aerobic fitness tests while female subjects have greater flexibility. High BMI values in overweight children have been found to be associated with increased abdominal fat as well as a reduction in overall PF. As expected, sports practitioners show better results in motor performance on PF tests.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To explore associations between adverse birth outcomes and childhood overweight at 3-8 years of age. DESIGN A prospective cohort study. SETTING Six central urban districts of Tianjin, China. PARTICIPANTS 1681 woman-child pairs. METHODS 1681 woman-child pairs were followed up for 8 years in Tianjin, China. Demographic and clinical information including birth outcomes was collected longitudinally, commencing from first antenatal care visit till postpartum period. Offspring height and weight were measured at 3-8 years of age. High and low weight/length ratios (WLR) at birth were, respectively, defined as ≥90th and ≤10th gestational week and sex-specific percentiles. Overweight for children at 3-5 and 6-8 years of age were, respectively, defined as body mass index (BMI)-for-age and -sex above the 2 z-score and 1 z-score curves of the WHO's child growth standards. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to obtain ORs and 95% CI with a stepwise backward selection method to select independent predictors. PRIMARY OUTCOMES MEASURES Childhood overweight. RESULTS Of 1681 children, 10.7% (n=179) and 27.8% (n=468) developed overweight at 3-5 and 6-8 years of age, respectively. Large for gestational age (LGA) was associated with increased risk of overweight at 3-5 years of age (aOR: 1.86, 95% CI: 1.27 to 2.72) while high WLR at birth was associated with increased risk of overweight at 6-8 years of age (1.82, 1.41 to 2.34). Low WLR at birth was associated with decreased risk of overweight at 6-8 years of age (0.52, 0.30 to 0.90). CONCLUSIONS LGA and high WLR at birth predicted childhood overweight at 3-5 and 6-8 years of age, respectively. Low WLR at birth was associated with decreased risk of childhood overweight at 6-8 years of age.

Abstract
This review aimed to assess the association between overweight/obesity and dental caries in Brazilian children/adolescents. Searches were performed in the Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane, PubMed, Embase and SciELO, Lilacs and Open Grey literature databases up to June 2022. The Joanna Briggs Institute checklist for analytical cross-sectional studies, the checklist for cohort studies, and the checklist for case-control studies were used. A total of 41 publications were included, and 15 meta-analyses were performed. The authors analyzed the differences in weighted mean difference (MD) and odds ratios (OR), and their corresponding confidence intervals (CI) (95%) for dental caries among eutrophic and obese and/or overweight children/adolescents. Meta-analyses showed that there was no association between overweight and/or obesity and dental caries in Brazilian children/adolescents for most anthropometric reference curves using BMI (Body Mass Index). A greater experience of dental caries was associated with well-nourished adolescents in permanent dentition, compared with obese individuals in the same dentition, as classified by the CDC 2000 curve (OR = 2.53, 95% CI;1.49-4.29; p = 0.0006; I2 = 0%) in dichotomous outcome studies, and (MD = 0.61, 95%CI: 0.08-1.15; p = 0.02; I2 = 0%) in continuous studies. The strength of the evidence of the results was classified as very low, low or moderate. It was concluded that there is no association between overweight and/or obesity and dental caries in Brazilian children/adolescents for most anthropometric reference curves using BMI. A greater experience of dental caries was associated with well-nourished adolescents in permanent dentition, compared with obese individuals in the same dentition, as classified by the CDC 2000 curve.

Abstract
Substantial evidence suggest that chronic consumption of high-fat diets (HFDs) can lead to obesity, abnormal metabolism, as well as cognitive impairment. Molecular and cellular changes regarding hippocampal dysfunctions have been identified in multiple HFD animal models. Therefore, in-depth identification of expression changes of hippocampal proteins is critical for understanding the mechanism of HFD-induced cognitive deficits. In this study, we fed 3-week-old male mice with HFD for 3 months to generate obese mice who exhibit systemic metabolic abnormality and learning and memory decline. Using an iTRAQ-labeled proteomic analysis, we identified a total of 82 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in the hippocampus upon HFD with 35 up-regulated proteins and 47 down-regulated proteins. Functional enrichment indicated that these DEPs were predominantly enriched in regulation of catabolic process, dendritic shaft, neuron projection morphogenesis and GTPase regulator activity. Protein-protein interaction enrichment showed that the DEPs are mostly enriched in postsynaptic functions; and of them, six proteins (i.e., DLG3, SYNGAP1, DCLK1, GRIA4, GRIP1, and ARHGAP32) were involved in several functional assemblies of the postsynaptic density including G-protein signaling, scaffolding and adaptor, kinase and AMPA signaling, respectively. Collectively, our findings suggest that these DEPs upon HFD might contribute to memory decline by disturbing neuronal and postsynaptic functions in the hippocampus.

Abstract
This study was performed to explore the association between attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and the risk of overweight/obesity in both children and adolescents. The PubMed, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant studies published before July 12, 2022. Studies with data for calculating the odds ratio (OR) of childhood overweight/obesity and ADHD were included. The literature value was assessed by the cross-sectional evaluation criteria proposed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). All analyses were conducted using StataSE 11 and RevMan 5.3 software with random-effects models. This review included a total of 16 studies covering 14,981 cases and 128,916 controls.According to the meta-analysis, children with ADHD had a significant risk for co-occurring overweight and obesity [OR 1.56; 95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.32-1.85], especially boys (OR 1.45; 95% CI 1.10-1.90), people in Asia (OR 3.25; 95% CI 1.70-6.21) and Europe (OR 1.85; 95% CI 1.61-2.12), and patients not using medication (OR 1.54; 95% CI 1.22-1.94).ADHD has a significant association with overweight and obesity in both children and adolescents, which may be altered by factors such as geography, gender, and medication use. Timely treatment should be provided to children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD to inhibit the emergence of overweight and obesity.

Abstract
Overweight and obesity have emerged as global health issues among children and adolescents. Restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic have aggravated the threat of paediatric obesity due to the prevalent reduction in physical activity (PA) in children and adolescents. However, this has also created an opportunity for healthcare professionals to explore new strategies to address this persistent problem. A systematically conducted scoping review was performed on 15 online databases to summarise and analyse the design, efficacy, and feasibility of PA-based weight management interventions for children and adolescents during the pandemic. Finally, we reviewed 23 eligible studies that were published between 2021 and 2023. The included interventions were presented to 1938 children and adolescents and 355 parents using a virtual or virtually blended face-to-face approach during the pandemic. The intervention design included a basic PA programme with three optional components (nutritional education, sociopsychological counselling, and medication consultations). Implementation generally resulted in favourable changes in body mass index (BMI) and/or body size or composition (primary outcomes), as well as health behaviours, physical health or fitness, and individual well-being (secondary outcomes). A longer duration of exposure to the intervention, female sex, and older age were associated with a higher efficacy of the included interventions. Moreover, the interventions showed high feasibility, with medium-high participant attendance, high acceptance/satisfaction in both children and adolescents and their parents and teachers, and strong participant engagement. This may be related to the high accessibility of health information, timely social support, and enhanced self-efficacy. In conclusion, both the virtual and blended delivery of well-planned weight management interventions during the pandemic show promise for the treatment and control of paediatric obesity. The lessons learned from the pandemic may help improve the design of future interventions and inform the proper integration of new technologies that have emerged in the post-pandemic world.

Abstract
Humans are becoming less active in the current age of technological advancement, which leads to poor health. Many factors, including unregulated diet, lack of exercise, environmental pollution and genetic factors are contributing to an increase in overweight. Obesity is a chronic condition that disturbs the physical health of a person, resulting in various other complications including cardiac, respiratory, and psychosocial issues. According to WHO, the current trend of obesity has shown a sharp increase in recent years. Methods ranging from as simple as regulating the diet to as complex as surgery are available. There are many approved drugs to treat the obesity majority of them works as suppressing the appetite and making the patient satisfy. Some of other agents works by insulinotropic activity. However, these agents need to be taken for longer period of time thus are associated with significant adverse drug reactions. Thus, the motive of this study is to understand obesity and the various methods available to manage it using the recent pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches.

Abstract
Background Early feeding practices have a critical role in the future not only in health but also in modulating eating habits. This study aimed to assess breastfeeding and complementary feeding practices and the nutritional status of Portuguese toddlers aged 0-36 months. Methods EPACI Portugal 2012 is a cross-sectional study of a national representative sample. Trained interviewers collected data about early feeding practices and anthropometrics. Body mass index was classified according to World Health Organization criteria. Frequencies and survival analysis were used to characterize variables. Results More than 90% of children were initiated breastfeeding, around 20% were exclusively breastfed for six months, and about 20% were breastfed at 12 months while complementary feeding was taking place. Exclusive breastfeeding was determined by maternal prepregnancy body mass index (HR 1.01; 95% CI 1.00, 1.03, P=.03) and low birth weight (HR 1.61; IC 95% 1.21, 2.15, P=.001) of the infants. About 90% were initiated complementary feeding between four and six months, and almost 10% were introduced to cow's milk before 12 months. In the second year of life, 83.2% and 61.6% of toddlers have already consumed nectars and sweet desserts, respectively. About one-third of Portuguese toddlers showed a body mass index z-score >1, and 6.6% were overweight/obese (z-score >2). No association was found between the duration of breastfeeding or timing of complementary feeding and the body mass index z-score in children. Conclusions Despite the low prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding at six months, Portuguese infants effectively comply with dietary recommendations during the first year of life. The transition to the family diet must be carefully made. There is a high prevalence of Portuguese toddlers at least at overweight risk. The duration of breastfeeding or timing of complementary feeding was not associated with the expression of overweight/obesity.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate how placental gene expression differs in two consecutive pregnancies in same sex siblings, and its possible association with the "maternal constraint" hypothesis. Material was gathered from the BASIC study (Biological, Affect, Stress, Imaging, and Cognition in Pregnancy and the Puerperium), a population based prospective study that was started in 2009 in Uppsala. Over 900 specimens of placenta biopsies were collected and out of these 10 women gave birth twice, to the same sex child, and were included in this study. The total RNA was isolated and prepared from frozen villous tissue from the placenta and further analyzed by use of Ion AmpliSeq Human Transcriptome Gene Expression kit. A total of 234 genes differed significantly between the first and second pregnancy placentas, when adjusting for delivery mode, maternal BMI and gestational age. Of special interest was the down-regulated group of genes in the second pregnancy. Exemplified by Pentraxin 3, SRY-Box Transcription Factor 9, and Serum Amyloid A1, which all were associated with biological processes involved in the immune system and inflammation. Further, protein-protein interaction analysis visualized them as hub genes interacting with several of the other differentially expressed genes. How these altered gene expressions affect maternal constraint during pregnancy needs further validation in lager study cohorts and also future validation in functional assays.

Abstract
Pediatric obesity is a global concern with distressing comorbid conditions, including mood disturbance, cardiovascular changes, endocrine imbalance, liver disease, sleep apnea, and orthopedic conditions. The primary treatment of this condition includes physical activity. Participating in organized sports has been shown to reduce weight and the complications of pediatric obesity more effectively than individual exercise.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood obesity is an important and serious public health problem worldwide. OBJECTIVE This article aims to familiarize physicians with the evaluation, management, and prevention of childhood. METHODS A PubMed search was conducted in May, 2021, in Clinical Queries using the key terms "obesity" OR "obese". The search included clinical trials, randomized controlled trials, case-control studies, cohort studies, meta-analyses, observational studies, clinical guidelines, case reports, case series, and reviews. The search was restricted to English literature and children. The information retrieved from the above search was used in the compilation of the present article. RESULTS Most obese children have exogenous obesity characterized by a growth rate for height above the 50th percentile, normal intelligence, normal genitalia, and lack of historical or physical evidence of an endocrine abnormality or a congenital syndrome. Obese children are at risk for dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, obstructive sleep apnea, psychosocial disturbances, impaired quality of life, and shorter life expectancy. The multitude of serious comorbidities necessitates effective treatment modalities. Dietary modification, therapeutic exercise, and behavioral modification are the fundamentals of treatment. Pharmacotherapy and/or bariatric surgery should be considered for obese individuals who do not respond to the above measures and suffer from a serious comorbid condition. CONCLUSION Childhood obesity, once established, is often refractory to treatment. Most treatment programs lead to a brief period of weight loss, followed by rapid re-accumulation of the lost weight after the termination of therapy. As such, preventive activity is the key to solving the problem of childhood obesity. Childhood obesity can be prevented by promoting a healthy diet, regular physical activity, and lifestyle modification. Parents should be encouraged to get involved in school and community programs that improve their children's nutritional status and physical activity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood caries and obesity are complex chronic diseases with negative health outcomes. AIM This study sought a risk profile for childhood caries and overweight. DESIGN Children were recruited into a longitudinal prospective cohort study. Caries and overweight characteristics were obtained at baseline, 6, 12, and 18 months. Sequential data modeling steps determined a disease risk profile. RESULTS At baseline, 50% of the children (n = 194, 3.0 to 6.9 years) had caries; 24% were overweight, of whom 50% had caries. Correlation analysis separated child characteristics from household circumstances. Principal component modeling separated child snacking from meal-eating patterns, and household smoking from parent education variables. Baseline caries and overweight were not associated, but they grouped together in the modeling of composite features. Forty-five percent of children showed caries progression, 29% overweight progression, and 10% progression of both diseases. The strongest predictors of progression were disease presence, household-based characteristics, and sugary drinks. Children with caries and overweight progression shared multiple child- and household-based features. CONCLUSION Individually, caries and overweight were not associated. Children with progression of both conditions shared a profile and multiple risk characteristics suggesting these findings could be useful in assessing the risk for the most extreme cases of caries and overweight.

Abstract
BACKGROUND GNAS (guanine nucleotide-binding protein, alpha stimulating) is an imprinted gene that encodes Gsα, the α subunit of the heterotrimeric stimulatory G protein. This subunit mediates the signalling of a diverse array of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), including the melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) that serves a pivotal role in regulating food intake, energy homoeostasis, and body weight. Genetic or epigenetic alterations in GNAS are known to cause pseudohypoparathyroidism in its different subtypes and have been recently associated with isolated, early-onset, severe obesity. Given the diverse biological functions that Gsα serves, multiple molecular mechanisms involving various GPCRs, such as MC4R, β2- and β3-adrenoceptors, and corticotropin-releasing hormone receptor, have been implicated in the pathophysiology of severe, early-onset obesity that results from genetic or epigenetic GNAS changes. SCOPE OF REVIEW This review examines the structure and function of GNAS and provides an overview of the disorders that are caused by defects in this gene and may feature early-onset obesity. Moreover, it elucidates the potential molecular mechanisms underlying Gsα deficiency-induced early-onset obesity, highlighting some of their implications for the diagnosis, management, and treatment of this complex condition. MAJOR CONCLUSIONS Gsα deficiency is an underappreciated cause of early-onset, severe obesity. Therefore, screening children with unexplained, severe obesity for GNAS defects is recommended, to enhance the molecular diagnosis and management of this condition.

Abstract
Introduction Introduction: excess weight in childhood is influenced by multiple factors; parenting could contribute to this problem, given that during the infant stage the parents, and mainly the mother, are responsible for providing food and feeding their children. Objective: to explore the relationship of parenting stress and maternal feeding styles with preschool BMI. Materials and methods: a cross-sectional study. A total of 382 dyads, mother and child (3-5 years of age) participated. The children attended public preschool institutions. Participating mothers completed the Parenting Stress Scale and the Caregiver Feeding Styles Questionnaire. Weight and height were measured, and the child's BMI was calculated. Results: 34 % of the mothers more frequently used an indulgent style, 28.2 % of the preschool children had overweight-obese. Mothers with an authoritative style had the highest mean range of parenting stress compared to other categories (H = 15.302, gl = 3, p = 0.002). Maternal schooling, responsibility and demand dimensions were identified as contributing to preschooler BMI. Conclusion: parenting stress and feeding styles are variables that contribute to the risk of overweight-obesity in prescho.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES We aimed to examine the association between self-rated and clinician-rated sleep disturbances and C-reactive protein (CRP), an objective marker of inflammation, in pediatric depression. METHODS Two hundred fifty-six children and adolescents (15.2 ± 1.6 y, 72.3% female) with moderate to severe symptoms of depression participated in the study. Sleep disturbances were assessed by self-reports (Insomnia Severity Index) and clinician ratings (Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorder and Schizophrenia), inflammation by plasma CRP levels. RESULTS Higher levels of CRP correlated positively with clinician-rated middle insomnia and hypersomnia. After adjusting for control variables (body mass index, tobacco, alcohol, stress, age, sex, antidepressants, sleep medication, depression severity), regression models confirmed the significant association of clinician-rated hypersomnia and middle insomnia symptoms with elevated CRP levels. In the adjusted regression models, other clinician-rated manifestations of sleep disturbance (eg, initial insomnia) and insomnia self-ratings were not significantly associated with CRP. Body mass index correlated positively with CRP, but body mass index had no mediating effect on the associations between sleep disturbances and CRP. We did not find an association between depression severity, assessed by the Children's Depression Rating Scale-Revised, and CRP. CONCLUSIONS Results of the present study indicate a significant association of hypersomnia and middle insomnia symptoms with CRP in pediatric depression, not linked to alterations in the body mass index. Abstract
Previous studies have shown conflicting findings regarding the association between birthweight and childhood adiposity. We aimed to explore the interaction between ultra-processed food (UPF) and birthweight and its associations with bodyweight markers. The retrospective analysis of data from a Multicity Cohort Study across eastern China was conducted. UPF was computed as percentage of the energy intake and categorized into quartiles. Birthweight was categorized into low (LBW), normal (NBW) and high (HBW). The BMI z-score was calculated using the lambda-mu-sigma method. The sex- and age-specific BMI cutoff points were used to define weight status. Generalized linear models were used to examine modification effects and were performed after adjustment for covariates. The mean percentage of energy intake from UPF was 27.7% among 1370 children. Of all children, 2.3% and 21.4% were born with LBW and HBW, respectively. HBW was a permanent risk for high BMI measures, while LBW was associated with increased BMI measurements only by the addition of the interaction term. The subgroup analysis revealed that HBW and LBW were positively associated with BMI measurements in the lowest UPF intake (Q1), while HBW was related to high BMI measures in Q4. Our findings support efforts to recommend limiting UPF intake, especially for LBW children.

Abstract
Obesity in children is related to the development of cardiometabolic complications later in life, where molecular changes of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and skeletal muscle tissue (SMT) have been proven to be fundamental. The aim of this study is to unveil the gene expression architecture of both tissues in a cohort of Spanish boys with obesity, using a clustering method known as weighted gene co-expression network analysis. For this purpose, we have followed a multi-objective analytic pipeline consisting of three main approaches; identification of gene co-expression clusters associated with childhood obesity, individually in VAT and SMT (intra-tissue, approach I); identification of gene co-expression clusters associated with obesity-metabolic alterations, individually in VAT and SMT (intra-tissue, approach II); and identification of gene co-expression clusters associated with obesity-metabolic alterations simultaneously in VAT and SMT (inter-tissue, approach III). In both tissues, we identified independent and inter-tissue gene co-expression signatures associated with obesity and cardiovascular risk, some of which exceeded multiple-test correction filters. In these signatures, we could identify some central hub genes (e.g., NDUFB8, GUCY1B1, KCNMA1, NPR2, PPP3CC) participating in relevant metabolic pathways exceeding multiple-testing correction filters. We identified the central hub genes PIK3R2, PPP3C and PTPN5 associated with MAPK signaling and insulin resistance terms. This is the first time that these genes have been associated with childhood obesity in both tissues. Therefore, they could be potential novel molecular targets for drugs and health interventions, opening new lines of research on the personalized care in this pathology. This work generates interesting hypotheses about the transcriptomics alterations underlying metabolic health alterations in obesity in the pediatric population.

Abstract
Purpose: Metabolic equivalents for youth (METy) are derived using the estimated basal metabolic rate (BMR). However, is unknown whether this METy can be different when measured resting energy expenditure (REE) is used. The purposes of this article are to: (a) To determine whether there is equivalence between METy values calculated using measured REE (METy-mea) and METy using predicted BMR (METy-est). (b) To determine whether METy values of different activities are dependent on age, sex, and body composition. Methods: A cross-sectional study with a sample of 122 Mexican children (5-11 years old) was conducted. With indirect calorimetry, energy expenditure was measured at rest and during 16 sedentary- to vigorous-intensity physical activities. METy were obtained in two forms: METy-mea and METy-est. Equivalence testing was used to compare METy-mea and METy-est. To examine the individual-level agreement, Bland-Altman plots were graphed, and intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) were calculated. Linear regression models were estimated having METy as the outcome. Results: For 15 activities, there was equivalence between METy-mea and METy-est (t > 2.05, p < 0.050). However, at the individual-level, for 7 activities the agreement between METy-eREE and METy-mREE was inadequate (ICC<0.75). In the Bland-Altman plots was evident that in 8 activities METy-est was biased compared to METy-mea, METy-est had more correlations with body mass index and body fat. Conclusions: In conclusion, at group-level, for most activities METy-mea and METy-est were equivalent. However, at the individual level, METy-est of many activities is not a valid estimate of METy-mea. METy-est of many physical activities were dependent on adiposity, which could be an artifact introduced when BMR is predicted.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to investigate the potential relationship between laryngomalacia and obesity as well as explore the interplay between laryngomalacia and obstructive sleep apnea using the Kids' Inpatient Database (KID) for the year 2016. Methods The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) KID for 2016 provided a dataset for analysis. Patient demographics, diagnoses, and hospital characteristics were considered. Patients less than three years old were included due to the high prevalence of laryngomalacia in this age group. Results Among 4,512,196 neonatal admissions, 1,341 obesity cases and 11,642 laryngomalacia cases were analyzed. The frequency of laryngomalacia in patients with obesity was 578.1% higher than in the general population. Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) exhibited a 5,243.2% increase in laryngomalacia frequency compared to the overall population. Combining obesity and laryngomalacia resulted in a 6,738.5% increase in OSA frequency. Conclusions This study identified a significant correlation between obesity and increased laryngomalacia risk. The findings have important clinical implications for pediatric care, emphasizing the need to prevent childhood obesity to reduce laryngomalacia risk. Additionally, understanding these risk factors enables better risk stratification for laryngomalacia and potential OSA development.

Abstract
Pediatric obesity has become a global pandemic in the last century, contributing to short and long-term medical conditions that heighten the risk of morbidity and mortality in children. The 12-month school-based obesity management educational program aims to assess the effect of adherence to the lifestyle educational program and target outcomes, obesity, and hypertension. A total of 363 (nonadherent, N = 179; adherent, N = 184) Saudi school adolescents aged 12-18 were recruited from 60 schools in Riyadh City, Saudi Arabia. Anthropometrics, lipid profile, and blood glucose were measured at baseline and post-intervention. The level of adherence was based on the number of attended educational sessions, and participants were grouped accordingly into two groups: adherent group (attended ≥ 3 sessions) and nonadherent group (attended 1-2 sessions) out of a total of five sessions. Results demonstrated that significantly more participants in the adherent group achieved the primary program goal of reducing obesity indices [body weight, body mass index (BMI), and BMI z-score] than the nonadherent group. Additionally, among adherent obese participants, BMI z-score significantly decreased after the 12-month intervention (post-intervention: 1.5 ± 0.7 vs. baseline: 1.7 ± 0.6, p < 0.05), while the trend in BMI z-score modestly increased in the nonadherent obese participants post-intervention (post-intervention: 1.8 ± 0.7 vs. baseline: 1.7 ± 0.6, p > 0.05). Moreover, there was a substantial reduction in hypertension prevalence only in the adherent group (p = 0.003) and among adherent obese participants in particular (p = 0.03). Furthermore, adherence to session attendance was higher in girls than boys, which led to better outcomes among girls than boys. For the secondary outcomes, lipid profile indices increased in both groups, while no changes were observed in the glycemic profile. In conclusion, greater adherence to educational sessions achieved modest but favorable weight changes and improved blood pressure among obese adolescents. Future intervention studies should take into consideration the need to improve attendance to enhance adherence to the program among adolescents at risk.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Based on the long-term impact of childhood obesity, there is a compelling need to assess the burden of obesity and micronutrient deficiency and the interactions between the two. Thus, the aims of the study were to estimate the prevalence of overweight and obese children and adolescents to compare micro-nutrient levels in these children with normal and underweight categories and explore the factors affecting overweight and obesity in the presence of micronutrient deficiencies. METHODS Secondary data analysis of the Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey-India (2017-2018) was done. The survey recorded information from 112,245 preschool children (6-60 months), school age children (5-9 years), and adolescents (10-19 years). Half of these participants were invited for biochemical testing and were included in our analysis. The presence of overweight or obesity and micronutrient (serum erythrocyte folate; vitamin B12, A, and D; ferritin; zinc; and urinary iodine) deficiencies were the primary outcomes. The secondary outcome included the mean serum levels and predictors of overweight and obesity in the presence of micronutrient deficiencies. RESULTS Of the 38,060, 38,355, and 35,830 preschool, school-age, and adolescent study participants, about 2.69, 4.18, and 4.99% were overweight or obese. We observed significant variations in the mean folate and vitamin B12 levels among the overweight and obese preschool and school-age children compared to the normal weight group. School-age children exhibited significant differences in all micronutrient levels. In contrast, adolescents only showed substantial differences in vitamin D and A and serum ferritin levels. The predictors of overweight and obesity included geographical locations, wealth quintiles, and societal castes. Iron, folate, vitamin D, and zinc levels significantly affect the odds of developing childhood overweight and obesity. CONCLUSIONS It is vital to halt the growing burden of childhood overweight and obesity. Addressing micronutrient deficiencies can help us bring a sustainable and feasible approach to managing this menace.

Abstract
Background Food insecurity, occupation, and poverty contribute to the poor nutritional status of Palestine. This review study aimed to analyze the nutritional status in the Palestinian Territory by analyzing published data from 2011 to 2023. Method Searching for relevant publications yielded 67 studies. Based on reviewing these studies, five major themes were identified: low birth weight, breastfeeding, obesity and overweight, protein-energy malnutrition, and micronutrient deficiency. Results Based on the review of these studies, five major themes were identified, namely, low birth weight, breastfeeding, obesity and overweight, protein-energy malnutrition, and micronutrient deficiency. Based on the literature, the prevalence rate of exclusive breastfeeding was 24.4% in the Gaza Strip, compared to a national rate of 39.9% in 2020. Smoking, anemia in mothers, diet during pregnancy, and indoor pollution were associated with low birth weight. One-fifth of the boys and girls were stunted by 2 years of age in the Gaza Strip, and girls were more stunted than boys. The prevalence rates of underweight, overweight, and obesity among school children in the West Bank were 7.3%, 14.5%, and 15.7%, respectively. Age, gender, and living area were significant predictors of being overweight among school children. The prevalence rates of overweight and obesity among adults in Palestine were 57.8% and 26.8%, respectively. Obesity is associated with a family history, chronic diseases, and low physical activity among adults. Exclusive breastfeeding was below the WHO recommendations, while significant rates of obesity and overweight were found among children and adults. Iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) among pregnant women and children remains a challenging public health issue, while other micronutrient deficiencies are high among children. Conclusion This review emphasizes the need for multi-sectoral interventions to address malnutrition and nutritional shifts. It identifies gaps and addresses nutrition-related issues in the Palestinian Territory, which can serve as a basis for guiding United Nations agencies and governments in formulating evidence-based policies and strategies for prioritizing nutritional interventions to meet sustainable development goals.

Abstract
Background Adolescence is recognised as a period of nutritional vulnerability, with evidence indicating that United Kingdom adolescents have suboptimal dietary intakes with many failing to meet dietary recommendations. Additionally, adolescence is a time of transition when they become more independent in their dietary choices and begin to develop their own sense of autonomy and are less reliant on their parent's guidance, which is reported to lead to less favourable dietary behaviours. Reducing the prevalence of poor dietary intakes and the associated negative health consequences among this population is a public health priority and schools represent an important setting to promote positive dietary behaviours. The aim of this school-based study was to explore the factors and barriers which influence food choices within the school canteen and to identify feasible strategies to promote positive dietary behaviours within this setting. Methods Thirteen focus groups with 86 pupils in Year 8 (n = 37; aged 11-12 years) and Year 9 (n = 49; aged 12-13 years) in six secondary schools across Northern Ireland, United Kingdom were conducted. Additionally, one-to-one virtual interviews were conducted with 29 school staff [principals/vice-principals (n = 4); teachers (n = 17); and caterers (n = 7)] across 17 secondary schools and an Education Authority (EA) senior staff member (n = 1). Focus groups and interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analysed following an inductive thematic approach. Results Using the ecological framework, multiple factors were identified which influenced pupils' selection of food in the school canteen at the individual (e.g., time/convenience), social (e.g., peer influence), physical (e.g., food/beverage placement), and macro environment (e.g., food provision) level. Suggestions for improvement of food choices were also identified at each ecological level: individual (e.g., rewards), social (e.g., pupil-led initiatives), physical (e.g., labelling), and macro environment (e.g., whole-school approaches). Conclusion Low-cost and non-labour intensive practical strategies could be employed, including menu and labelling strategies, placement of foods, reviewing pricing policies and whole-school initiatives in developing future dietary interventions to positively enhance adolescents' food choices in secondary schools.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Overweight among adolescents remains a serious concern worldwide and can have major health consequences in later life, such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Still, 33% of secondary school adolescents in the Netherlands consume sugar-sweetened beverages daily and over 26% do not consume water every day. The Dutch Healthy School program was developed to support schools in stimulating healthier lifestyles by focusing on health education, school environments, identifying students' health problems, and school policy. We examined the variation between secondary schools regarding the daily consumption of water and sugar-sweetened beverages and whether this variation can be explained by differences between schools regarding Healthy School certification, general school characteristics, and the school population. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional multilevel study. We used data from the national Youth Health Monitor of 2019 on secondary schools (grades 8 and 10, age range about 12 to 18 years) of seven Public Health Services and combined these with information regarding Healthy School certification and general school- and school population characteristics. Our outcomes were daily consumption of water and sugar-sweetened beverages. In total, data from 51,901 adolescents from 191 schools were analysed. We calculated the intraclass correlation to examine the variation between schools regarding our outcomes. Thereafter, we examined whether we could explain this variation by the included characteristics. RESULTS The school-level explained 4.53% of the variation in the consumption of water and 2.33% of the variation in the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages. This small variation in water and sugar-sweetened consumption could not be explained by Healthy School certification, yet some general school- and school population characteristics did: the proportion of the school population with at least one parent with high educational attainment, the educational track of the adolescents, urbanicity (only for water consumption) and school type (only for sugar-sweetened beverages consumption). CONCLUSIONS The low percentages of explained variation indicate that school-level characteristics in general (including Healthy School certification) do not matter substantially for the daily consumption of water and sugar-sweetened beverages. Future research should examine whether school health promotion can contribute to healthier lifestyles, and if so, under which level of implementation and school conditions.

Abstract
Introduction Internet use (IU) commonly refers to sedentary lifestyle and may be addictive, especially among children. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between IU and some aspects of child physical and psychosocial development. Methodology We conducted a cross-sectional survey by using a screen-time based sedentary behavior questionnaire and Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ)-among 836 primary school children in the Braničevo District. The children's medical records were analysed for vision problems and spinal deformities. Their body weight (BW) and height (BH) were measured and body mass index (BMI) was calculated as BW in kilograms divided by BH in meters squared (kg/m2). Results The average age of respondents was 13.4 (SD 1.2) years. The mean duration of daily Internet use and sedentary behavior was 236 (SD 156) and 422 (SD 184) minutes, respectively. There was no significant correlation between daily IU and vision problems (near sightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, strabismus), and spinal deformities. However, daily Internet use is significantly associated with obesity (p < 0.001) and sedentary behavior (p = 0.01). There was significant correlation between emotional symptoms with total Internet usage time, and total sedentary score (p < 0.001 for both, r = 0.141 and r = 0.132, respectively). There was a positive correlation between the total sedentary score of children and hyperactivity/inattention (r = 0.167, p < 0.001), emotional symptoms (r = 0.132, p < 0.001), and conduct problems (r = 0.084, p < 0.01). Conclusion In our study, children's Internet use was associated with obesity, psychological disturbances and social maladjustment.
