Abstract
Vitamin D hormone is an important regulator of various physiological functions, and its deficiency is characterized by an imbalance in parathyroid hormone and calcium homeostasis. The role of vitamin D in cardiovascular physiology is well demonstrated in animal and humanbased studies. In this context, hyperlipidemia, increased atherogenic plaques, cardiac inflammation, hypertension, myocarditis, myocardial infarction, and heart failure are some of the commonest known conditions connected with vitamin D deficiency. Supplementation of vitamin D is recommended to achieve normal serum vitamin D concentrations, nonetheless, in clinical trials often seen discrepancies concerning the supplementation effects and effectiveness. This review summarizes the data on the role of vitamin D in cardiovascular health along with some recent clinical findings regarding the effects of vitamin D supplementation.

Abstract
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that plays a crucial role in calcium homeostasis and bone health. Recent research suggests that vitamin D may also have an impact on lipid metabolism, specifically the level of circulating lipids in the blood. We aim to investigate it role among healthy participate. We conducted a cross-sectional study of 15,600 patients who were referred to the laboratories of university hospitals. We measured the serum levels of Vitamin D as well as triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL, and HDL using ELISA. We found that the mean serum level of Vitamin D was 40.31 ± 20.79 ng/mL. Of the participants, 16.7% had a serum level of Vitamin D less than 20 ng/mL, 57.7% had a level between 21 and 40 ng/mL, and 13.5% had a level between 41 and 60 ng/mL. Additionally, 12.2% had a level greater than 60 ng/mL. We performed a one-way analysis of variance and found that as the serum level of Vitamin D increased, the mean LDL level decreased significantly. Our study provides evidence of a significant relationship between serum levels of Vitamin D and LDL levels in patients. The findings suggest that vitamin D status may play a role in regulating lipid metabolism and may have implications for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Further research is needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of this relationship and to determine optimal levels of vitamin D intake for maintaining lipid profiles.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Vitamin D (vitD) can regulate metabolic pathways in adipose tissue and pancreatic β cells by interacting with its vitamin D receptor (VDR). The aim of this study was to review original publications published in the last months and verify the relationship between genetic variants in the VDR gene and type 2 diabetes (T2D), metabolic syndrome (MetS), overweight, and obesity. RECENT FINDINGS The recent studies concern genetic variants located in the coding and noncoding regions of the VDR gene. Some of the described genetic variants may affect VDR expression or posttranslational processing altered functionality or vitD binding capacity of VDR. Nevertheless, the data collected in recent months on the assessment of the relationship between VDR genetic variants and the risk of T2D, MetS, overweight, and obesity still do not give a clear answer to whether they have a direct impact on these metabolic disorders. SUMMARY Analysis of the potential association between VDR genetic variants and parameters such as glycemia, body mass index, body fat, and lipid levels improves the current understanding of the pathogenesis of T2D, MetS, overweight, and obesity. A thorough understanding of this relationship may provide important information for individuals with pathogenic variants and enable the implementation of appropriate prevention against the development of these disorders.

Abstract
Nutrition is directly related to human health. It is very critical to determine
the nutritional status to prevent or diagnose diseases and create the right treatment
plans. The determination of the nutritional status provides an early diagnosis of growth
and development retardation such as malnutrition. It also plays a major role in
preventing diseases that may be caused by vitamin and mineral deficiencies. It helps in
the surveillance of one of the world's most serious health problems, namely “obesity.”
Different ways can be used to assess nutritional status. One of the best ways to assess
the nutritional and health status is to use biomarkers. A biomarker is a substance whose
detection indicates a specific disease state or a response to a therapeutic intervention.
Biomarkers are used to detect nutrient consumption and deficiencies as early as
possible, enabling early intervention for metabolic problems. Biomarkers also allow the
visualization of diseases that a person might develop or potentially have with a sample,
such as blood, tissue, and urine, from the person. Health interventions such as
nutritional advice will preserve health or promote rapid recovery. In this chapter, the
topic of biomarkers related to nutrition and nutrient deficiencies is discussed. The
existence of new possible biomarkers is also reviewed.

Abstract
PURPOSE The results of previous studies on the relationship between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and hyperuricemia are controversial. We hypothesized that serum 25(OH)D concentrations of U.S. adults would negatively correlate with the risk of hyperuricemia. METHOD Data came from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2014 were used, after excluding those who met at least one of the exclusion criteria, a total of 9096 male individuals and 9500 female individuals aged 18 years or older were included. Binary logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic spline with fully adjusted confounding factors were applied to evaluate the association between serum 25(OH)D and hyperuricemia. We further performed stratified analysis and sensitivity analysis to minimize the influence of gender, metabolic syndrome, obesity and renal dysfunction on the above association. RESULTS We found a negative correlation between serum 25(OH)D and hyperuricemia. In the binary logistic regression analysis, compared with the highest serum 25(OH)D quartile [Q4: 25(OH)D > 77.10 nmol/L] group, the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) in the lowest quartile [Q1: 25(OH)D ≤ 43.20 nmol/L] was 1.46 (1.22-1.75) in the fully adjusted model. Restricted cubic spline analysis showed L-shaped and non-linear relationships between 25(OH)D and hyperuricemia. In sensitivity analysis, after restricting to participants without significant renal dysfunction and obesity, the above association remained significant. After restricting to participants who were diagnosed as metabolic syndrome, above association remained significant in the fully adjusted model. In stratified analysis by gender, the association remained significant among males and females. CONCLUSIONS Serum 25(OH)D might be inversely associated with hyperuricemia in general U.S. adults. From our study, for people with unexplained hyperuricemia, screening for serum Vitamin D concentration might be necessary.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous observational studies have revealed the association between serum uric acid and 25-hydroxyvitamin D. However, the causality and the direction of the associations remain unknown. Thus, we performed a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal association between uric acid and 25-hydroxyvitamin D and to determine the direction of the association. METHOD Based on the summary-level GWAS data from large genome-wide association studies, several steps were taken in our analysis to select eligible single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which were strongly related to exposure as the instrumental variables. We used different analytical methods, such as inverse-variance weighting (IVW) method, weighted median, MR-Egger regression, and weighted mode method, to make our result more robust and reliable. The IVW method was used as the primary analysis. The Cochran's Q test, MR-Egger intercept test, MR-PRESSO method, and "leave-one-out" sensitivity analysis was performed to evaluate the heterogeneities, horizontal pleiotropy, and robustness of the results. MR analyses were also conducted using genetic risk scores (GRS) as instrumental variables in both directions by using the same summary-level GWAS data. RESULTS Our two-sample MR analysis suggested a causal association of genetically predicted uric acid on 25-hydroxyvitamin D [IVW method: β(SE), -0.0352(0.0149); p = 0.0178], which suggested that a per mg/dl increase in uric acid was associated with a decrease of 0.74 nmol/L of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and the above results remained stable in the sensitivity analysis. By contrast, four MR methods suggested no causal relationship of 25-hydroxyvitamin D on serum uric acid [IVW β(SE), 0.0139 (0.0635); p = 0.826; MR-Egger β(SE), 0.0671 (0.108); p = 0.537; weighted median β(SE), 0.0933 (0.0495); p = 0.0598; weighted mode β(SE), 0.0562 (0.0463); p = 0.228, respectively]. After excluding the SNPs, which were associated with confounding factors and outlier SNPs, the IVW method suggested that there was still no causal association of 25-hydroxyvitamin D on serum uric acid. The GRS approach showed similar results. CONCLUSIONS Serum uric acid may causally affect the 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, whereas the causal role of 25-hydroxyvitamin D on uric acid was not supported in our MR analysis. Our findings suggest that increased levels of uric acid should prompt investigation for vitamin D deficiency.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Dyslipidaemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Vitamin D deficiency has been found to be associated with CVD. However, the relationships between vitamin D and lipids are inconsistent. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between vitamin D status and serum lipids in Southern Thai subjects. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 726 healthy subjects in Southern Thailand were enrolled in the study. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), lipid profiles, fasting plasma glucose, anthropometric data, blood pressure, and body composition were measured. The relationship between serum 25(OH)D levels and biochemical data was evaluated by partial correlation and multiple linear regression analyses. The association of serum 25(OH)D levels with dyslipidaemia was analysed using multivariate regression analysis. RESULTS Serum 25(OH)D levels were negatively correlated with body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and body composition parameters after adjusting for age in women. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that TC and BMI were independent predictors for 25(OH)D concentrations in women. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that the odds ratio of hypertriglyceridaemia (OR = 0.51; 95% CI: 0.32-0.80, p = 0.004) and reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (OR = 0.43; 95% CI: 0.26-0.71, p = 0.001) were significantly lower in vitamin D sufficiency when compared with hypovitaminosis D in women. CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D sufficiency could reduce risk of hypertriglyceridaemia and reduced HDL-C, particularly in women, suggesting that vitamin D sufficiency may have beneficial effects on lipids and a decreased risk for CVD in Thai women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Previous investigations have been indicated that vitamin D deficiency is an amendable risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the general populations. Limited data is available concerning the relationship of vitamin D status and risk factors of CVD in the individuals with obesity and the existing data are highly controversial. We investigated whether serum vitamin D situation is related to multiple traditional CVD risk factors in Iranian obese subjects. METHODS A cross-sectional study was done among 214 Iranian adults with obesity (94 males and 120 females) aged 20-60 years, who attended the specialized outpatient clinics in Zabol city. Participants were categorized as vitamin D sufficient, insufficient, and deficient according to their serum 25(OH)D concentrations. Afterward, the presence of hypercholesterolemia, hypertriglyceridemia, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), high low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) as well as diabetes, hypertension, and high serum concentrations of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) as CVD risk factors were evaluated in the participants. RESULTS There was a noticeable regular trend regarding hypercholesterolemia (p = 0.008), high LDL-C (p = 0.024), hypertension (p = 0.021), and high hs-CRP (p < 0.0001) across various categories of vitamin D status. In adjusted model, vitamin D-deficient subjects were at higher risk for having hypercholesterolemia (OR: 3.22, p = 0.031), high LDL-C (OR: 2.37, p = 0.047), hypertension (OR: 2.32, p = 0.042), and high hs-CRP (OR: 5.49, p = 0.001) than ones with sufficient vitamin D status. CONCLUSIONS Vitamin D deficiency in obese subjects was found to be strongly related to higher risk of unfavorable lipid profile, hypertension, and high hs-CRP.

Abstract
Vitamin D and calcium supplements are commonly used, often together, to optimize bone health. Multiple observational studies have linked low serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations with increased cardiovascular risk. However, subsequent randomized controlled trials (RCTs) failed to demonstrate cardiovascular benefit with vitamin D supplementation. Although vitamin D supplements do not appear to be harmful for cardiovascular health, the lack of benefit in RCTs should discourage their use for this purpose, favoring optimizing vitamin D status through healthy lifestyles such as specific foods and modest sunlight exposure. Furthermore, some (but not all) observational and RCT studies of calcium supplementation have suggested potential for cardiovascular harm. Therefore, calcium supplementation should be used cautiously, striving for recommended intake of calcium predominantly from food sources. In this review, the authors examine the currently available evidence investigating whether vitamin D and calcium supplements are helpful, harmful, or neutral for cardiovascular health.

Abstract
The exact link between obesity, vitamin D deficiency, and their relation to cellular senescence in the pathogenesis of subclinical atherosclerosis is still under debate. Therefore, the current study aims to verify the possible role of vitamin D deficiency and cellular senescence in the pathogenesis of obesity-related subclinical atherosclerosis. Moreover, it aims to investigate the possible protective role of vitamin D supplementation. Fifty-seven male albino rats were enrolled in the study and classified into four groups: negative (10) and positive control groups (10), an obese model group (24), and a vitamin-D-supplemented obese group (13). Aortic tissue samples and fasting blood samples were collected. The following biochemical investigations were performed: serum cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-C, LDL-C, ALT, AST, CPK, CK-MB, and hs-cTnt. HOMA-IR was calculated. Moreover, serum SMP-30, 25 (OH)Vitamin D3, and eNOS were determined by the ELISA technique. Aortic gene expression of eNOS, SMP-30, and P53 was estimated by real-time qRT-PCR. Serum 25(OH) D3 and SMP-30 were lower in the obese group. In addition, the obese group showed higher serum lipid profile, HOMA-IR, eNOS, ALT, AST, CPK, CK-MB, and hs-cTnt than the control groups, while decreased levels were found in the vitamin-D-treated obese group. Gene expression of eNOS and SMP-30 were in accordance with their serum levels. A positive correlation was found between vitamin D level and SMP-30. In conclusion, obesity is associated with vitamin D deficiency and enhanced cellular senescence. They could play a role in the pathogenesis of obesity-associated subclinical atherosclerosis and endothelial dysfunction. Vitamin D supplements could play a protective role against such obesity-related comorbidity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY) is a prospective birth cohort designed to study type 1 diabetes (T1D) by following children with high genetic risk. An integrative multi-omics approach was used to evaluate islet autoimmunity etiology, identify disease biomarkers, and understand progression over time. RESULTS We identify a multi-omics signature that was predictive of islet autoimmunity (IA) as early as 1 year before seroconversion. At this time, abnormalities in lipid metabolism, decreased capacity for nutrient absorption, and intracellular ROS accumulation are detected in children progressing towards IA. Additionally, extracellular matrix remodeling, inflammation, cytotoxicity, angiogenesis, and increased activity of antigen-presenting cells are observed, which may contribute to beta cell destruction. Our results indicate that altered molecular homeostasis is present in IA-developing children months before the actual detection of islet autoantibodies, which opens an interesting window of opportunity for therapeutic intervention. CONCLUSIONS The approach employed herein for assessment of the TEDDY cohort showcases the utilization of multi-omics data for the modeling of complex, multifactorial diseases, like T1D.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Uterine fibroids (UFs) are benign tumors which are derived from the smooth muscle cells of the uterus. Recent studies have demonstrated that the development of UFs can be particularly related to vitamin D and its receptor. Vitamin D comprises a group of fat-soluble steroid compounds which exert powerful, pleiotropic effects all over the human body. These actions are mediated by a specific type of receptor - vitamin D receptor (VDR). Recent findings have focused on the possible role of VDR genetic variations in the development of several types of diseases, e.g. autoimmune system diseases, various cancers and infections. MATERIAL AND METHODS The aim of the study was to evaluate the association between rs731236, rs1544410, and rs2228570 polymorphisms in the VDR (vitamin D receptor) gene and the incidence of UFs in Caucasian women. A total of 197 patients (114 fibroid-positive and 83 controls) were included in this retrospective cohort study. VDR gene polymorphisms rs731236 (TaqI), rs1544410 (BsmI) and rs2228570 (FokI) were determined using TaqMan and Simple Probes. RESULTS No statistically significant differences in the occurrence of selected VDR polymorphisms were observed between UF-positive women and healthy controls. CONCLUSIONS We found no association between rs731236, rs1544410, and rs2228570 VDR polymorphisms and UF incidence in Caucasian women. Larger sample size and multi-ethnic studies are necessary to investigate the matter further.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The increase in the number of people affected by different metabolic disturbances, especially among young people, is alarming. It seems worthwhile to reappraise the usefulness of commonly used laboratory parameters potentially associated with metabolic and metabolically obese normal weight syndrome. Serum uric acid may be considered as an indicator and/or a predictor of metabolic disorders. We evaluated serum uric acid concentration in relation to metabolic syndrome, as well as metabolically obese normal weight features, and examined its usefulness in improving metabolic and metabolically obese normal weight syndrome diagnosis in young people. MATERIAL AND METHODS In 349 apparently healthy people, aged 18-31, features of metabolic and metabolically obese normal weight syndrome and serum uric acid concentration were examined under fasting conditions. RESULTS Prevalence of metabolic syndrome increased in uric acid quartiles, while the percentage of metabolically obese normal weight syndrome was at a similar level in all uric acid quartiles. A relationship between uric acid concentration and features of metabolic disorders in quartile and correlation analysis was revealed. Data mining techniques did not indicate the usefulness of uric acid for distinguishing people with metabolic syndrome from those with metabolically obese normal weight syndrome. CONCLUSIONS We confirmed that in young people an increase in uric acid levels is more closely related to metabolic syndrome features than insulin resistance. Serum uric acid concentration could not be recommended as an independent, strong marker of metabolic or metabolically obese normal weight syndrome occurrence in young people, but finding its elevated concentration should be an indicator for screening for other disturbances associated with metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Recent experimental and population studies have highlighted the existence of telomere-mitochondria interplay. Besides studies revealing the molecular mechanisms underlying the associations of telomere defects and mitochondrial functions, investigations of mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn) and telomere length (TL) in healthy and disease phenotypes have likewise begun, with the aim of gaining more insights about their relationship in humans. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 142 asymptomatic adult twins, comprising 96 monozygotic (MZ) and 46 dizygotic (DZ) twins (mean age: 50.54 ±15.43 years), members of the Hungarian Twin Registry, were included in the analysis. Applying the qPCR standard curve method, we investigated the relationship of mtDNA copy number, telomere length and clinical data, besides assessing co-twin similarities of MZ and DZ twins for their mtDNAcn and TL measures. RESULTS We found that twins were similar in their intraclass correlation coefficients irrespective of zygosity, suggesting a possibly more important role of common (shared) environmental factors compared to non-shared (unique) environmental and to a smaller degree also individual genetic influences. We confirmed a significant positive association between mtDNAcn and TL (r = 0.28, p < 0.01) in age- and sex-corrected analysis. Following bivariate estimates and correction with significant predictors, the independent positive associations were further verified. CONCLUSIONS Our results extend the until now modest number of studies investigating mtDNAcn and TL simultaneously in humans. In addition, we are the first to examine the relationship between mtDNAcn and telomere length in MZ and DZ twin subjects.

Abstract
Vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for cardiometabolic disease. The aim of this study was to determine the role of vitamin D status in the impact of fenofibrate on plasma levels of cardiometabolic risk factors. The study population (n = 61) consisted of three matched groups of women with atherogenic dyslipidaemia: vitamin D-naïve women with vitamin D insufficiency (group A), women receiving vitamin D preparations because of vitamin D deficiency (group B), as well as vitamin D-naïve women with normal vitamin D status (group C), who were treated with micronized fenofibrate (200 mg daily). Glucose homeostasis markers, plasma lipids, as well as plasma levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, uric acid, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), fibrinogen and homocysteine were determined at the beginning of the study and 6 months later. At entry, group A was characterized by lower levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, reduced insulin sensitivity and higher concentrations of uric acid, hsCRP, fibrinogen and homocysteine. Apart from a weaker effect on HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides in group A, there were no differences between the treatment arms in the effect of fenofibrate on plasma lipids. However, only in groups B and C the drug improved insulin sensitivity and reduced circulating levels of uric acid and hsCRP, as well as increased levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and these effects correlated with the degree of improvement in insulin sensitivity. Treatment-induced increase in homocysteine was observed only in group A. The results of the study indicate that cardiometabolic effects of fibrates may depend on the vitamin D status of patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Uterine fibroids are the most common pelvic benign tumour with no satisfactory long-term medical treatment. Recent studies have demonstrated that vitamin D significantly inhibited the growth of fibroids in vitro, vivo and a small-sample clinical trial. Therefore, the aim of this randomised clinical trial (RCT) is to evaluate whether supplementation with vitamin D could reduce the risk and inhibit the growth of uterine fibroids in reproductive stage women. METHODS AND ANALYSIS The open-label, RCT comprises two parts, including parts I and II. In part I, 2230 vitamin D deficiency or vitamin D insufficiency patients without uterine fibroids will be randomly assigned to two groups: intervention group (according to the level of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3, receive 1600 or 800 IU/day of vitamin D3 for 2 years) and control group (followed up at the same time points). By using gynaecological ultrasound examinations, the incidence of uterine fibroids will be employed to measure the outcome in different groups. In part II, 360 uterine fibroids patients with vitamin D deficiency or vitamin D insufficiency will be randomly assigned to intervention group or control group. According to the level of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3, 180 patients will receive 1600 or 800 IU/day of vitamin D3 for 2 years. Control group will receive regular follow-up. The outcome measure will be conducted using gynaecological ultrasound examinations to detect the growth of uterine fibroids in each group. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study has been approved by the institutional review board of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University (No. LCKY2018-35). Abstract
Aging is accompanied by various functional modifications determined by their environment, lifestyle, nutrition, and genetics. Based on these factors, it is essential to verify the vitamin deficiency in the elderly population. Hypovitaminosis D is commonly present in human aging, increasing the chances of developing noncommunicable chronic diseases. The VDR gene TaqI polymorphism may modify the vitamin D metabolic pathway by altering the interaction between the vitamin D receptor and the active circulating vitamin D. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between serum vitamin D and biochemical and genetic factors, considering the TaqI polymorphism of the VDR gene, in an elderly population of the Federal District. The study was a descriptive, case-control, quantitative, and cross-sectional type and was conducted in two basic health units in the administrative region of Ceilândia, Federal District, DF, Brazil, with women aged 60 years or older. Anthropometric, biochemical, and genetic parameters (VDR TaqI polymorphism) were evaluated. The adopted significance level was 5%, and statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS version 20.0 program. The study consisted of 128 participants. The most prevalent age was from 60 to 65 years (N = 53; 41.4%). 66 elderly (51.6%) were part of the case group (hypovitaminosis D), while 62 were in the control group. In the case group, 30.2% had grade I obesity, 77.3% were hypertensive, and 51.5% were diabetic. The TT genotype was present in 47% of the case group and 54.8% in the control group (p=0.667). There was no association between serum vitamin D levels and the VDR gene variant TaqI polymorphism in an elderly Brazilian population.

Abstract
Association between vitamin D and uric acid is complex and might be bidirectional. Our study aimed to determine the bidirectional association between vitamin D and uric acid in adults. Using MEDLINE via PubMed and Scopus, we systematically searched for observational or interventional studies in adults, which assessed the association between serum vitamin D and serum uric acid, extracted the data, and conducted analysis by direct and network meta-analysis. The present review included 32 studies, of which 21 had vitamin D as outcome and 11 had uric acid as outcome. Meta-analysis showed a significant pooled beta coefficient of serum uric acid level on serum 25(OH)D level from 3 studies of 0.512 (95% confidence interval: 0.199, 0.825) and a significant pooled odds ratio between vitamin D deficiency and hyperuricemia of 1.496 (1.141, 1.963). The pooled mean difference of serum 25(OH)D between groups with hyperuricemia and normouricemia was non-significant at 0.138 (-0.430, 0.707) ng/ml, and the pooled mean difference of serum uric acid between categories of 25(OH)D were also non-significant at 0.072 (-0.153, 0.298) mg/dl between deficiency and normal, 0.038 (-0.216, 0.292) mg/dl between insufficiency and normal, and 0.034 (-0.216, 0.283) mg/dl between deficiency and insufficiency. In conclusion, increasing serum uric acid might be associated with increasing 25(OH)D level, while vitamin D deficiency is associated with hyperuricemia. These reverse relationships should be further evaluated in a longitudinal study.

Abstract
The kinetics and localization of the reactions of metabolism are coordinated by the enzymes that catalyze them. These enzymes are controlled via a myriad of mechanisms including inhibition/activation by metabolites, compartmentalization, thermodynamics, and nutrient sensing-based transcriptional or post-translational regulation; all of which are influenced as a network by the activities of metabolic enzymes and have downstream potential to exert direct or indirect control over protein abundances. Considering many of these enzymes are active only when one or more vitamin cofactors are present; the availability of vitamin cofactors likely yields a systems-influence over tissue proteomes. Furthermore, vitamins may influence protein abundances as nuclear receptor agonists, antioxidants, substrates for post-translational modifications, molecular signal transducers, and regulators of electrolyte homeostasis. Herein, studies of vitamin intake are explored for their contribution to unraveling vitamin influence over protein expression. As a body of work, these studies establish vitamin intake as a regulator of protein abundance; with the most powerful demonstrations reporting regulation of proteins directly related to the vitamin of interest. However, as a whole, the field has not kept pace with advances in proteomic platforms and analytical methodologies, and has not moved to validate mechanisms of regulation or potential for clinical application.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of vitamin D3 on total homocysteine (tHcy) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and liver and kidney function tests in overweight women with vitamin D deficiency. Therefore, a randomised, double-blind placebo, controlled clinical trial was conducted on 100 eligible women. Subjects were randomly divided into two groups: the placebo (n 50) and the vitamin D (n 50) which received 1250 µg vitamin D3 per week for 2 months. The participants' 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D), tHcy, CRP, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), urea, creatinine and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) were measured and compared before and after treatment. Results showed that the tHcy, CRP, AST, ALT and eGFR levels after the 2nd month of vitamin D3 intervention were significantly (P < 0·001) decreased and the 25(OH)D, urea and creatinine levels were significantly (P < 0·001) increased in the treatment group. In the placebo group, no significant changes were identified throughout the follow-up period. In conclusion, vitamin D3 intervention with a treatment dose of 1250 µg/week for at least 2 months may help in lowering Hcy and CRP levels and may improve liver function tests, which in turn might help in minimising the risk of CVD and liver diseases among overweight women but negatively affect kidney function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND One of the public health concerns is Vitamin D deficiency. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of vitamin D inadequacy and to determine its reproductive factor correlates in northern Iranian women. METHODS This study, conducted on 5096 females aged 35-70 years. The study was based on data from PERSIAN Guilan Cohort Study (PGCS), a prospective, population-based cohort study in Guilan, Iran. History of reproductive and gynecologic factors, including age at menarche, age at first marriage, number of pregnancies or live births, age at first pregnancy, duration of breastfeeding, number of abortions, age and type of menopause status, use of oral contraceptives or hormone replacement therapy, history of hysterectomy, tubectomy or oophorectomy and history of gestational diabetes and hypertension was collected. Serum 25(OH) vitamin D was measured. RESULTS The mean 25(OH)-D concentration was 21.78 ng/mL, and 53.5% of women had vitamin D inadequacy. The multivariate analyses revealed that younger age (36-45 years) [>66 years adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 2.1, 95% CI 1.7-2.7, 56-65 years aOR = 1.7, 95% CI 1.3-2.1 and 46-55 years aOR = 1.4, 95% CI 1.1-1.7], not consuming oral contraceptives [aOR = 1.1, 95% CI 1.05-1.3] and pre-menopausal status [aOR = 1.4, 95% CI 1.2-1.6] were significantly independently associated with vitamin D inadequacy. CONCLUSION Vitamin D inadequacy is common in northern Iranian women. The reproductive factors that independently correlated with vitamin D statues are oral contraceptive consumption and menopausal statue.

Abstract
Heart failure (HF) is a complex clinical syndrome that represents a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Western countries. Several nutraceuticals have shown interesting clinical results in HF prevention as well as in the treatment of the early stages of the disease, alone or in combination with pharmacological therapy. The aim of the present expert opinion position paper is to summarise the available clinical evidence on the role of phytochemicals in HF prevention and/or treatment that might be considered in those patients not treated optimally as well as in those with low therapy adherence. The level of evidence and the strength of recommendation of particular HF treatment options were weighed up and graded according to predefined scales. A systematic search strategy was developed to identify trials in PubMed (January 1970 to June 2019). The terms 'nutraceuticals', 'dietary supplements', 'herbal drug' and 'heart failure' or 'left verntricular dysfunction' were used in the literature search. The experts discussed and agreed on the recommendation levels. Available clinical trials reported that the intake of some nutraceuticals (hawthorn, coenzyme Q10, l-carnitine, d-ribose, carnosine, vitamin D, probiotics, n-3 PUFA and beet nitrates) might be associated with improvements in self-perceived quality of life and/or functional parameters such as left ventricular ejection fraction, stroke volume and cardiac output in HF patients, with minimal or no side effects. Those benefits tended to be greater in earlier HF stages. Available clinical evidence supports the usefulness of supplementation with some nutraceuticals to improve HF management in addition to evidence-based pharmacological therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Conventional observational studies have suggested that 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) is inversely associated with telomere shortening. We aimed to apply two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) to assess the causal association between serum 25(OH) D and telomere length (TL). METHODS MR was implemented by using summary-level data from the largest genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on vitamin D (n = 73 699) and TL (n = 37 684). Inverse variance weighted method (IVW) was used to estimate the causal estimates. Weighted median (WM)-based method, and MR-Egger, leave-one-out were applied as sensitivity analysis. RESULTS The results of MR demonstrated no effect of 25(OH)D on TL (IVW = β:-0.104, p = 0.219, WM = β:-0.109, p = 0.188; MR Egger = β:-0.127, p = 0.506). None of the 25(OH)D-related single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were significantly associated with TL. Heterogeneity tests did not detect heterogeneity. Furthermore, MR pleiotropy residual sum and outlier (MR-PRESSO) did not highlight any outliers (p = 0.424). Results of leave-one-out method demonstrated that the links are not driven because of the single SNPs. CONCLUSIONS Our study does not support any causal effect of 25(OH) D on TL.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Liver cirrhosis (LC) is a heterogeneous liver disease, the last stage of liver fibrosis, and the major risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Our study aimed to evaluate the expression of microRNAs and the endothelial vascular growth factor (VEGFA) gene in LC and HCC. MATERIAL AND METHODS The sample group consisted of 46 tissue samples: 21 of LC, 15 of HCC, and 10 of non-tumoural and non-cirrhotic liver tissue (control group). MiRNAs were chosen based on a mirDIP prediction database as regulators of the VEGFA gene. Gene expression of VEGF and miRNAs was quantified by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. VEGFA protein expression was evaluated by ELISA. RESULTS VEGFA gene expression was significantly overexpressed in LC compared to the control group (p < 0.0001). Hsa-miR-206 (p = 0.0313) and hsa-miR-637 (p = 0.0156) were down-expressed in LC. In HCC, hsa-miR-15b (p = 0.0010), hsa-miR-125b (p = 0.0010), hsa-miR-423-3p (p = 0.0010), hsa-miR-424 (p = 0.0313), hsa-miR-494 (p < 0.0001), hsa-miR-497 (p < 0.0001), hsa-miR-612 (p = 0.0078), hsa-miR-637 (p < 0.0001), and hsa-miR-1255b (p = 0.0156) presented down-expression. CONCLUSIONS Overexpression of VEGFA in LC suggests impairment of angiogenesis in this tissue. The differential expression of microRNAs in LC and HCC observed in our study can lead to the evaluation of possible biomarkers for these diseases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cardiovascular diseases are ranked as the third cause of mortality among people infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), but the relationship of infection with cardiovascular risk remains disputable. We have focused on the comprehensive use of parameters obtainable during long-term electrocardiographic (ECG) Holter monitoring. MATERIAL AND METHODS Heart rate variability and turbulence (HRV and HRT), deceleration/acceleration capacity (DC/AC), corrected QT interval (QTc) and late potential (LP) were used. 36 persons were included, and 30 healthy subjects formed a control group. All were submitted to 24-hour Holter ECG-monitoring. RESULTS The studied groups were not statistically significantly different with regards to basic anthropometric parameters. Statistically significantly higher medium and maximum heart rhythm and aminotransferase activities were recorded in patients with hepatitis C. The HRV parameters r-MSSD, p50NN, HF, and absolute DC/AC values were significantly lower in the subjects with hepatitis C than those in the control group. The QTc interval, measured for nocturnal hours, was also significantly longer in that group. There were no differences in the albumin level or basic echocardiographic parameters, including left ventricle ejection fraction. Nor was there any difference in the HRT parameters, or LP. The most interesting observation was the positive correlation among the number of viral RNA copies and DC, and LF. CONCLUSIONS We confirmed the presence of autonomic disorders with prevalence of sympathetic system activity and prolonged QTc interval in patients with chronic hepatitis C. Those parameters significantly correlated with infection intensity. Our results suggest that HCV infection could be an independent cardiovascular risk factor, not associated with the lipid profile. Further prospective studies are needed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to systemically summarize the present literature about circulating cystatin C (Cys C) levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and provide a more precise evaluation of Cys C levels in T2DM. MATERIAL AND METHODS Relevant studies about Cys C concentrations in T2DM were searched in PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library database (up to Oct 31 2018). We computed the pooled standard mean difference (SMD) with its 95% confidence interval (CI) of Cys C levels through a random-effect model. The Q test and the I2 statistic were used to assess and quantify between-study heterogeneity; publication bias was evaluated through a funnel plot and Egger's linear regression test. RESULTS After the literature search and screening process, 14 studies with 723 T2DM patients and 473 healthy controls were finally included in the meta-analysis. The results showed that T2DM patients had significantly higher Cys C levels compared to healthy controls (SMD = 1.39, 95% CI: 0.92-1.86, p < 0.001). Publication bias was not detected based on the symmetrical shape of the funnel plot and the results of Egger's test (p = 0.452). Subgroup analyses suggested that variables of human race, age, gender, study sample size and disease duration have a relationship with Cys C level in T2DM patients. CONCLUSIONS Overall, our study suggests that patients with T2DM have an elevated circulating Cys C level compared to healthy controls, and it is associated with race, age, gender, study sample size and disease duration. Further investigations are still needed to explore the causal relationship of aberrant Cys C concentrations in T2DM.

Abstract
Ankyrins are adaptor molecules that in eukaryotic cells form complexes with ion channel proteins, cell adhesion and signalling molecules and components of the cytoskeleton. They play a pivotal role as scaffolding proteins, in the structural anchoring to the muscle membrane, in muscle development, neurogenesis and synapse formation. Dysfunction of ankyrins is implicated in numerous diseases such as hereditary spherocytosis, neurodegeneration of Purkinje cells, cardiac arrhythmia, Brugada syndrome, bipolar disorders and schizophrenia, congenital myopathies and congenital heart disease as well as cancers. Detecting either down- or over-expression of ankyrins and ergo their use as biomarkers can provide a new paradigm in the diagnosis of these diseases. This paper provides an outline of knowledge about the structure of ankyrins, and by making use of recent experimental research studies critically discusses their role in several health disorders. Moreover, therapeutic options utilizing engineered ankyrins, designed ankyrin repeat proteins (DARPins), are discussed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Low vitamin D levels have been recognised as an important risk factor for autoimmune diseases, including multiple sclerosis (MS). MS is a multifactorial disease, the pathogenesis of which contributes both to genetic and environmental factors. Polymorphisms in genes codifying molecules involved in vitamin D homeostasis have been associated with hypovitaminosis D. However, the influence of polymorphisms of Klotho, which codify a protein with a pivotal role in vitamin D metabolism, have never been investigated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association among genetic variants of Klotho, namely rs1207568 and rs9536314, serum 25(OH)D3 levels, and multiple sclerosis (both risk and disease progression). MATERIAL AND METHODS 107 patients with MS and 133 healthy controls were enrolled in this study. Serum 25(OH)D3 levels and genotyping of Klotho SNPs were evaluated in all participants by high-performance liquid chromatography and real-time polymerase chain reaction, respectively. RESULTS Allelic and genotypic frequencies did not differ between patients and controls. Concerning rs1207568, we found a trend toward lower serum 25(OH)D3 levels in MS patients with A allele (mutant), both in heterozygosis (AG) and in homozygosis (AA), in comparison to MS patients with G allele in homozygosis (GG) (AG + AA 20.5 ±6.3 µg/l; GG 22.5 ±7.5 µg/l, p = 0.07). CONCLUSIONS Our findings did not identify a role of Klotho in the genetic susceptibility to MS.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The biological actions of vitamin D are mediated through vitamin D receptor (VDR). Numerous single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the VDR gene have been identified, and some have been associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. This study aims to evaluate the association of five SNPs in the VDR gene with 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels in patients with at least one CVD risk factor. MATERIAL AND METHODS Genomic DNA was sequenced using standard Sanger methods for five VDR SNPs (BsmI rs1544410; ApaI rs7975232; Cdx2 rs11568820; TaqI rs731236; FokI rs2228570) in 50 Mediterranean subjects having hypovitaminosis D with at least one documented CVD risk factor, aged 18 years or more. The collected variables were serum levels of (25[OH]D), HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol. RESULTS BsmI, ApaI, and TaqI were moderately to highly intercorrelated. Cdx2 was less frequent than expected. With respect to the number of mutations in FokI, levels of (25 [OH]D) were 11.2 ±5.5 ng/ml in the absence of mutations, 12.6 ±4.7 ng/ml in the presence of one mutation, and 16.5 ± 5.5 ng/ml in the presence of two mutations. CONCLUSIONS FokI polymorphism is more frequent in subjects with cardiovascular risk factors than in the general Caucasian population.

Vitamin D supplementation and incident preeclampsia: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials. Clin Nutr 2019; 39:1742-1752. Abstract
BACKGROUND Maternal vitamin D deficiency has been associated with an increased risk for preeclampsia. Despite this, the current evidence regarding the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation in preventing preeclampsia is controversial. To assess the impact of vitamin D supplementation on the risk of preeclampsia, we performed a systematic review of the literature and a meta-analysis of the available randomized clinical trials (RCTs). METHODS The primary outcome was preeclampsia. Subgroup analyses were carried out considering the timing of the supplementation, type of intervention and the study design. Meta-regression analysis, including the amount of vitamin D and maternal age, were planned to explore heterogeneity (PROSPERO database registration number: CRD42019119207). RESULTS Data were pooled from 27 RCTs comprising 59 arms, which included overall 4777 participants, of whom 2487 were in the vitamin D-treated arm and 2290 in the control arm. Vitamin D administration in pregnancy was associated with a reduced risk of preeclampsia (odd ratio [OR] 0.37, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.26, 0.52; I2 = 0%). If the vitamin D supplementation was started up to 20 weeks' gestation, the odds was a little lower (OR 0.35, 95% CI: 0.24, 0.50, p < 0.001). The effect was largely independent of the supplementation cessation (until delivery or not), type of intervention (vitamin D alone or in association with calcium), and study design. Increasing dose of vitamin D was associated with reduced incidence of preeclampsia (slope of log OR: -1.1, 95% CI: -1.73, -0.46; p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Results suggest that vitamin D supplementation may be useful in preventing preeclampsia. These data are especially useful for health-care providers who engage in the management of pregnant women at risk for preeclampsia. Our findings are a call for action to definitively address vitamin D supplementation as a possible intervention strategy in preventing preeclampsia in pregnancy.

Abstract
The fructose added to soft drinks and processed food, as well as frequent detection of vitamin D deficiency in the body, are two insults increasingly considered to cause lesions in target organs. We studied the liver after a chronic high-fructose diet deficient and supplemented with vitamin D. Sixty C57BL/6 mature male mice were allocated into six groups (n = 10) for ten weeks: control (C), control deficient in vitamin D (CDD), control supplemented with vitamin D (CDS), fructose (F), fructose deficient in vitamin D (FDD), and fructose supplemented with vitamin D (FDS). The gene expressions of vitamin D receptor and CYP27B1 and 25 hydroxyvitamin D plasma level ensured that the diets caused vitamin D deficiency or supplementation. Body mass did not change, but blood pressure (BP) increased in CDD, F, and FDD, whereas BP was controlled in FDS. Insulinemia, insulin tolerance and resistance were seen in both vitamin D deficiency and fructose groups but improved with vitamin D supplementation. The steatosis and fibrosis were observed in the CDD, F and FDD groups. Also, F and FDD showed activation of stellate cells (HSC). Lipogenesis and inflammation gene expressions were enhanced in the CDD, F and FDD groups, but diminished with vitamin D supplementation. In conclusion, we demonstrated the adverse effects of vitamin D deficiency on metabolism, liver steatosis and, combined with fructose intake, liver interstitial fibrosis with hepatic stellate cell activation, and alteration of the lipogenesis, beta-oxidation, and liver inflammation. All these data improved when vitamin D was supplemented in the animals.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Vitamin D deficiency is a common problem, and it is related to increased risk of obesity, metabolic syndrome, atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D has a beneficial effect on dyslipidemia and insulin secretion. We aimed to investigate the impact of vitamin D3 supplementation on anthropometric and laboratory parameters in overweight and obese premenopausal women. MATERIAL AND METHODS Seventy-two overweight and 50 obese vitamin-D-deficient premenopausal women (mean age: 43.1 ±10.4 years) were included in the study. Baseline mean 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] level was 6.1 (min.-max. = 2.9-15.8) ng/ml in overweight and was 5.6 (min.-max. = 3.0-22.0) ng/ml in obese subjects. At baseline and at the sixth month of supplementation, serum 25(OH)D, intact parathormone (iPTH), calcium, phosphorus, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and lipid profiles were assessed. RESULTS Following vitamin D3 supplementation in overweight and obese subjects, serum 25(OH)D increased from 6.1 to 34.7 ng/ml and 5.6 to 34.7 ng/ml, respectively (p < 0.001). At the sixth month of supplementation in both overweight and obese subjects, a significant reduction was detected in HOMA-IR (p < 0.001), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (p = 0.046, p = 0.044; respectively) and iPTH levels (p ≤ 0.001, p < 0.001; respectively). A negative adjusted correlation was found between changes in 25(OH)D and HOMA-IR (r = -0.581, p < 0.001; r = -0.389, p = 0.005; respectively). A 1 ng/ml increase in serum 25(OH)D level led to a 0.30-fold reduction in HOMA-IR level (p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS Our results support the effect of vitamin D3 supplementation in HOMA-IR and LDL-C improvement in both obese and overweight subjects. Further studies focused on low serum 25(OH)D levels with insulin resistance and dyslipidemia are needed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of the study was to evaluate whether flow-mediated dilation (FMD) can be used to predict incident hypertension in patients with hyperuricemia. MATERIAL AND METHODS Normotensive participants with and without hyperuricemia at baseline were prospectively enrolled. Flow-mediated dilation was assessed at baseline, and after 1 year's follow-up the incidence of hypertension was compared between those with and without hyperuricemia. The predictive value of baseline FMD for incident hypertension among hyperuricemia patients was evaluated. RESULTS A total of 222 participants were included. Mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP) was 129.5 ±8.4 mm Hg and 78.3 ±7.9 mm Hg. Mean serum uric acid (UA) level was 4.4 ±2.8 mg/dl. Mean FMD was 5.1 ±2.7%. Compared to normal UA group, hyperuricemia group had higher proportion of male (58.4% vs. 61.2%), higher systolic BP (125.4 ±7.9 mm Hg vs. 132.1 ±7.3 mm Hg), serum high sensitivity C-reactive protein (3.9 ±2.2 mg/dl vs. 4.5 ±3.0 mg/dl) and UA (3.5 ±1.4 mg/dl vs. 5.7 ±0.7 mg/dl) levels, but lower mean FMD (5.6 ±2.4% vs. 4.8 ±2.0%) (p < 0.05 for all comparisons). No participant in normal UA group developed hypertension, while in hyperuricemia group, 6 participants developed hypertension. In hyperuricemia participants, after adjusted for covariates, per 1-standard deviation decrease in baseline FMD remained significantly associated with 15% increased risk of incident hypertension. CONCLUSIONS Patients with hyperuricemia have an increased risk of developing hypertension, and low baseline FMD in hyperuricemia patients is associated with significantly increased risk of incident hypertension.

Abstract
The role of vitamin D in perinatology is a subject of major interest in current medicine. There is growing evidence about the role of maternal vitamin D levels in pregnancy outcomes. The aim of this review is to summarize the current literature about the role of vitamin D in perinatology. Evidence from this review suggests associations between low levels of maternal vitamin D and higher risk of certain obstetrical complications. Vitamin D has been found to be related to preeclampsia, gestational diabetes mellitus, low birth weight, and preterm birth. The current literature supports vitamin D supplementation in pregnant women, but more high-quality data are necessary. The problem that remains is how to achieve an optimal 25-hydroxyvitamin D level. To determine the real benefits of vitamin D supplementation in pregnancy, we need high-quality trials in larger groups.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Vitamin D deficiency is common, world-wide, but vitamin D repletion throughout life, and into older age, has accepted health benefits for bone. Many mechanisms through which vitamin D also benefits soft tissues are understood, and clinical evidence of such benefits is now accumulating, especially following re-analyses of trial data, which are revealing previously missed health benefits with correction of deficiency. AREAS COVERED The sources of vitamin D, its activation, mechanistic effects; problems of trials of supplementation for reducing health risks, the benefits shown for mortality, cardiovascular disease, infection and cancer; the global problem of vitamin D deficiency; age-related reductions in vitamin D efficacy, and currently recommended intakes. EXPERT COMMENTARY High prevalence of vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency worldwide have proven ill-effects on health. Governmental efforts to improve population repletion by recommending minimal daily intakes does benefit some but is not effective at the population-level. However, food fortification with vitamin D3, already implemented in some countries, can solve this highly avoidable problem cost-effectively and is probably the best way to abolish vitamin D inadequacy, allowing public health benefits to emerge over time, thereby allowing future research on vitamin D to be directed at emerging issues on vitamin D.

Abstract
Cholesterol is an important lipid molecule in cell membranes and lipoproteins. Cholesterol is also a precursors of steroid hormones, bile acids, and vitamin D. Abnormal levels of cholesterol or its precursors have been observed in various human diseases, such as heart diseases, stroke, type II diabetes, brain diseases and many others. Therefore, accurate quantification of cholesterol is important for individuals who are at increased risk for these diseases. Multiple analytical methods have been developed for analysis of cholesterol, including classical chemical methods, enzymatic assays, gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC), and mass spectrometry (MS). Strategy known as ambient ionization mass spectrometry (AIMS), operating at atmospheric pressure, with only minimal sample pretreatments for real time, in situ, and rapid interrogation of the sample has also been employed for quantification of cholesterol. In this review, we summarize the most prevalent methods for cholesterol quantification in biological samples and foods. Nevertheless, we highlight several new technologies, such as AIMS, used as alternative methods to measure cholesterol that are potentially next-generation platforms. Representative examples of molecular imaging of cholesterol in tissue sections are also included in this review article.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have associated vitamin D deficiency with cardiovascular disease (CVD) markers. The underlying mechanism remains elusive. Lipid and non-lipid markers of CVD and their relationship to vitamin D deficiency have not been assessed simultaneously. OBJECTIVE To measure the association between vitamin D deficiency and non-lipid markers of CVD after adjustment of lipid markers. METHODS This cross-sectional study used the following biological data, which was routinely collected in a general hospital laboratory database between 2011 and 2016: 25OH vitamin D [25(OH)D], creatinine, CKD-EPI eGFR (eGFR), fasting blood glucose (FPG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), uric acid, γ-glutamyl transferase (γGT), C-reactive protein (CRP), total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and a surrogate for CVD. Crude odds ratios (ORs) and ORs adjusted for lipid profile, gender and age using separate logistic regression models were derived. RESULTS A total of 8658 subjects were included. Half had 25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL. 25(OH)D was associated with increased odds of CRP, eGFR, increased uric acid, γGT, FPG, HbA1c, male gender, CV status, and abnormal lipid markers. After adjustment for lipid markers, age, and gender, vitamin D deficiency was associated with increased odds of CRP, eGFR, γGT, FPG, HbA1c, and the surrogate for CVD. CONCLUSIONS In this exploratory analysis, the first of its kind in the MENA region, vitamin D deficiency was associated with abnormal lipid markers, non-lipid markers of CVD, male gender, lower eGFR, and a surrogate variable for CVD. The association between vitamin D deficiency and non-lipid markers of CVD persisted after adjustment for lipid markers, age, and gender.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The concern with the incidence of chronic-degenerative diseases is increasing worldwide, and many studies have shown that insufficiency of vitamin D (VD) can be linked to several metabolic disorders. AIMS Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the association of the metabolic syndrome risk factors, atherogenic indices and VD in a group of patients attended at a Cardiology Center. METHODS For this study, we invited 200 patients of both sexes attended in a Cardiology Center (Medical School of Marilia - São Paulo - Brazil). Most were female (n = 111) and aged between 41 and 70 years (from march to august, 2017). RESULTS Our results showed that only 20.0% of the patients presented normal levels of VD. Patients with altered values for this vitamin presented significantly higher values for glycemia, HbA1c, Total cholesterol, LDL-c, triglycerides, Castelli Index I, Castelli Index II, Body Mass Index, waist circumference, non-HDL-c and the estimative of the size of the LDL-c particle. Vitamin D correlated negatively with glycemia, HbA1C, triglycerides, atherogenic indices, Body Mass Index, and blood pressure. Multiple Regression Model showed that for an individual to maintain metabolic parameters, at least at borderline values, the levels of VD should be 37.64 that is not in accordance with the reference values. CONCLUSIONS These results showed a remarkable prevalence of low concentrations of Vitamin D in patients with cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Cardiovascular (CV) diseases remain a leading global cause of death. It has been proven that the use of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) in secondary prevention reduces the CV risk, while the benefits of ASA in primary prevention have recently been debated. The aim of the study was to compare the antiplatelet effect of standardised tomato extract (STE) and ASA in hypertensive patients with high CV risk. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study involved high-risk patients with arterial hypertension (AH) randomly assigned to one of two groups: group 1 included 33 patients receiving ASA and group 2 included 32 patients receiving STE. The platelet aggregation was determined using the VerifyNow analyser. RESULTS After 4 weeks of ASA treatment in group 1, a statistically significant reduction in aspirin reaction units (ARU) was observed (p < 0.001). However, the obese subgroup using ASA (n = 18) did not reveal a significant decrease in ARU (p > 0.05). After 4 weeks of STE treatment in the obese subgroup (n = 14), significant declines in ARU by 8.6% (95% CI: -19.5 to -1.7%; p < 0.05) and in P2Y12 reaction units (PRU) by 7.5% (95% CI: -17.6 to 1.8%; p < 0.05) were observed. CONCLUSIONS The antiplatelet effect of STE in hypertensive patients may be weight dependent. The group with AH and obesity might have potentially benefitted from STE treatment.

Abstract
We aimed at performing a calibration and re-calibration process using six standard risk factors from Northern (NE, N = 2360) or Southern European (SE, N = 2789) middle-aged men of the Seven Countries Study, whose parameters and data were fully known, to establish whether re-calibration gave the right answer. Greenwood-Nam-D'Agostino technique as modified by Demler (GNDD) in 2015 produced chi-squared statistics using 10 deciles of observed/expected CHD mortality risk, corresponding to Hosmer-Lemeshaw chi-squared employed for multiple logistic equations whereby binary data are used. Instead of the number of events, the GNDD test uses survival probabilities of observed and predicted events. The exercise applied, in five different ways, the parameters of the NE-predictive model to SE (and vice-versa) and compared the outcome of the simulated re-calibration with the real data. Good re-calibration could be obtained only when risk factor coefficients were substituted, being similar in magnitude and not significantly different between NE-SE. In all other ways, a good re-calibration could not be obtained. This is enough to praise for an overall need of re-evaluation of most investigations that, without GNDD or another proper technique for statistically assessing the potential differences, concluded that re-calibration is a fair method and might therefore be used, with no specific caution.

Abstract
Background Vitamin D deficiency is implicated in some diseases, including cardiovascular. Few studies have assessed the correlation between 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH) D3] and serum lipids. In this study, we explored the correlation between serum 25(OH) D3 concentrations and serum lipids with a typical sample of the rural population in China. Methods Face-to-face research was used to gather some basic information. Fasting serum concentrations of 25-(OH) D3, total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) and, LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) tested in the laboratory. Results The mean of serum 25(OH) D3 level was 28.71 ± 29.29 ng/mL. The results showed that the dyslipidemia was strongly associated with gender (P = 0.031), drinking (P = 0.043), high-fat diet intake (P = 0.017), HDL-C (P<0), TG (P<0), body mass index (BMI) (P<0) and serum 25(OH)D3 levels (P = 0.002). There was a positive correlation between serum 25(OH)D3 and HDL-C (P<0) in all groups. The relationship between 25(OH) D3 and LDL-C (P = 0.024) was discovered only in normal lipid group. The multivariable adjusted odds ratio (95%CI) of hypoalphalipoproteinemia/HDL and dyslipidemia by comparing the sufficiency vs. the deficiency serum 25-(OH) D3 level were 0.31 (0.192, 0.499) (P = 0.001) and 0.52 (0.36, 0.73) (P = 0.005), respectively. Conclusions Serum 25(OH) D3 concentrations were associated with the serum lipids level and the association was different in normal serum lipid group and dyslipidemia group. With the increase of serum 25(OH) D3 levels, the incidence of dyslipidemia decreased.
