Biochemical and biophysical interaction of rare earth elements with biomacromolecules: A comprehensive review

The growing utilization of rare earth elements (REEs) in industrial and technological applications has captured global interest, leading to the development of high-performance technologies in medical diagnosis, agriculture, and other electronic industries. This accelerated utilization has also raised human exposure levels, resulting in both favourable and unfavourable impacts. However, the effects of REEs are dependent on their concentration and molecular species. Therefore, scientific interest has increased in investigating the molecular interactions of REEs with biomolecules. In this current review, particular attention was paid to the molecular mechanism of interactions of Lanthanum (La), Cerium (Ce), and Gadolinium (Gd) with biomolecules, and the biological consequences were broadly interpreted. The review involved gathering and evaluating a vast scientific collection which primarily focused on the impact associated with REEs, ranging from earlier reports to recent discoveries, including studies in human and animal models. Thus, understanding the molecular interactions of each element with biomolecules will be highly beneficial in elucidating the consequences of REEs accumulation in the living organisms.

A systematic review of pharmaceutical and personal care products as emerging contaminants in waters: The panorama of West Africa

Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) are widely used to prevent or treat human and animal diseases, thereby improving the quality of daily life. Poor management of post-consumer products is recognized worldwide, as they negatively affect the ecosystems where they are discharged. The first action to prevent negative impacts is the state of knowledge regarding their occurrence. This paper critically reports the panorama of West Africa in terms of PPCPs occurrence in different water sources. To achieve this objective, a systematic review was conducted on PPCPs in West Africa following the PRISMA guidelines. Databases, including African Journals Online, PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Dimensions, were used for this search. Thirty-five articles, representing 58 % of West African countries, were selected according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Of these articles, one included data from multiple West African countries, while the remaining 34 exclusively focused on Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, and Nigeria. The results revealed a variety of PPCPs investigated, about 27 groups and 112 compounds, with greater emphasis on antibiotics, analgesics and PSHXEs. HPLC was the predominant analytical method used, resulting in total concentrations of PPCPs in the range of 200,000 to 3,200,000 ng/L in drinking water, 12 to 700,000 ng/L in groundwater, 0.42 to 107,800,000 ng/L in surface water, 8.5 to 121,310,000 ng/L in wastewater, and 440 to 421,700 ng/L in tap water. Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon reported the highest number of PPCPs investigated and consequently the highest concentration of cases. These compounds present a high potential ecological risk, with >50 % exceeding the risk quotient limit. Therefore, West Africa as a community needs integrated approaches and strategies to monitor water, especially transboundary resources. This review is timely and provides pertinent information to policymakers and researchers on PPCPs in water.

Modulation of proteins by rare earth elements as a biotechnological tool

Although rare earth element (REE) complexes are often utilized in bioimaging due to their photo- and redox stability, magnetic and optical characteristics, they are also applied for pharmaceutical applications due to their interaction with macromolecules namely proteins. The possible implications induced by REEs through modification in the function or regulatory activity of the proteins trigger a variety of applications for these elements in biomedicine and biotechnology. Lanthanide complexes have particularly been applied as anti-biofilm agents, cancer inhibitors, potential inflammation inhibitors, metabolic elicitors, and helper agents in the cultivation of unculturable strains, drug delivery, tissue engineering, photodynamic, and radiation therapy. This paper overviews emerging applications of REEs in biotechnology, especially in biomedical imaging, tumor diagnosis, and treatment along with their potential toxic effects. Although significant advances in applying REEs have been made, there is a lack of comprehensive studies to identify the potential of all REEs in biotechnology since only four elements, Eu, Ce, Gd, and La, among 17 REEs have been mostly investigated. However, in depth research on ecotoxicology, environmental behavior, and biological functions of REEs in the health and disease status of living organisms is required to fill the vital gaps in our understanding of REEs applications.

Rare Earths-The Answer to Everything

Rare earths, scandium, yttrium, and the fifteen lanthanoids from lanthanum to lutetium, are classified as critical metals because of their ubiquity in daily life. They are present in magnets in cars, especially electric cars; green electricity generating systems and computers; in steel manufacturing; in glass and light emission materials especially for safety lighting and lasers; in exhaust emission catalysts and supports; catalysts in artificial rubber production; in agriculture and animal husbandry; in health and especially cancer diagnosis and treatment; and in a variety of materials and electronic products essential to modern living. They have the potential to replace toxic chromates for corrosion inhibition, in magnetic refrigeration, a variety of new materials, and their role in agriculture may expand. This review examines their role in sustainability, the environment, recycling, corrosion inhibition, crop production, animal feedstocks, catalysis, health, and materials, as well as considering future uses.

The Use of Diatoms in the Synthesis of New 3D Micro-Nanostructured Composites (SiO2/CaCO3/Corg/NdVO4NPs and SiO2/CaO/Corg/NdVO4NPs) Exhibiting an Intense Anti-Stokes Photoluminescence

New 3D micro-nanostructured composite materials have been synthesised. These materials comprise SiO2/CaCO3/Corg/NdVO4NPs and SiO2/CaO/Corg/NdVO4NPs, exhibiting strong upconversion luminescence. The synthesis was accomplished by metabolically doping diatom cells with neodymium and vanadium. Subsequently, the biomass of these doped diatoms was subjected to pyrolysis at 800 °C. The morphology, structure, and physicochemical properties of the doped diatom biomass as well as dried (SiO2/CaCO3/Corg/NdVO4NPs) and pyrolysed (SiO2/CaO/Corg/NdVO4NPs) samples were characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermal analysis (TG), and fluorescence spectroscopy (FS). Studies have shown that the surface of diatom shells is covered with trigonal prismatic nanocrystallites (nanoparticles) of NdVO4 with dimensions of 30-40 nm, forming the crystallite clusters in the form of single-layer irregular flakes. The synthesised composites produced intense anti-Stokes fluorescent emission in the visible region under xenon lamp excitation in the near-infrared (λex = 800 nm) at room temperature in an ambient atmosphere. Such materials could be attractive for applications in solar spectrum conversion, optical sensing, biosensors, or photocatalysts.

Therapeutic and Diagnostic Agents based on Bioactive Endogenous and Exogenous Coordination Compounds

Metal-based coordination compounds have very special place in bioinorganic chemistry because of their different structural arrangements and significant application in medicine. Rapid progress in this field increasingly enables the targeted design and synthesis of metal-based pharmaceutical agents that fulfill valuable roles as diagnostic or therapeutic agents. Various coordination compounds have important biological functions, both those initially present in the body (endogenous) and those entering the organisms from the external environment (exogenous): vitamins, drugs, toxic substances, etc. In the therapeutic and diagnostic practice, both the essential for all living organisms and the trace metals are used in metal-containing coordination compounds. In the current review, the most important functional biologically active compounds were classified group by group according to the position of the elements in the periodic table.

Accumulation and Translocation of Rare Trace Elements in Plants near the Rare Metal Enterprise in the Subarctic

Mining activities create disturbed and polluted areas in which revegetation is complicated, especially in northern areas. For the first time, the state of the ecosystems in the impact zone of tailings formed during the processing of rare earth element deposits in the Subarctic have been studied. This work aimed to reveal aspects of accumulation and translocation of trace and biogenic elements in plants (Avenella flexuosa (L.) Drejer, Salix sp., and Betula pubescens Ehrh.) that are predominantly found in primary ecosystems on the tailings of loparite ores processing. The chemical composition of soil, initial and washed plant samples was analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Factor analysis revealed that anthropogenic and biogenic factors affected the plants' chemical composition. A deficiency of nutrients (Ca, Mg, Mn) in plants growing on tailings was found. The absorption of REE (Ce, La, Sm, Nd) by A. flexuosa roots correlated with the soil content of these elements and was maximal in the hydromorphic, which had a high content of organic matter. The content of these elements in leaves in the same site was minimal; the coefficient of REE bioaccumulation was two orders of magnitude less than in the other two sites. The high efficiency of dust capturing and the low translocation coefficient of trace elements allow us to advise A. flexuosa for remediation of REE-contained tailings and soils.

Metallophore Activity toward the Rare Earth Elements by Bacteria Isolated from Acid Mine Drainage Due to Coal Mining

The field of microbe-metal interactions has been gaining significant attention. While the direct impact of metal oxyanions on bacteria has been investigated, significantly less attention has been placed on the ability of certain microbes to 'collect' such metal ions via secreted proteins. Many bacteria possess low-weight molecules called siderophores, which collect Fe from the environment to be brought back to the cell. However, some appear to have additional roles, including binding other metals, termed 'metallophores'. Microbes can remove/sequester these from their surroundings, but the breadth of those that can be removed is still unknown. Using the Chromeazurol S assay, we identified eight isolates, most belonging to the genus Pseudomonas, possessing siderophore activity, mainly from sites impacted by coal mine drainage, also possessing a metallophore activity toward the rare earth elements that does not appear to be related to ionic radii or previously reported EC50 concentrations for E. coli. We found the strength of metallophore activity towards these elements was as follows: Pr > Sc > Eu > Tm > Tb > Er > Yb > Ce > Lu > Sm > Ho > La > Nd > Dy > Gd > Y. This is the first study to investigate such activity and indicates bacteria may provide a means of removal/recovery of these critical elements.

Structural Study of a La(III) Complex of a 1,2,3-Triazole Ligand with Antioxidant Activity

The 1,2,3-triazole derivative 2-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-(pyrrolidin-1-yl)-2H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylic acid with potential anticancer activity was used as a ligand in complex formation with the lanthanum(III) ion. The molecular structure and vibrational spectra of the complex were optimized at three DFT levels, and the scaled IR and Raman spectra were compared to the experimental ones. Several scaling procedures were used. Through a detailed analysis, the structure predicted for the newly synthetized La(III) complex was confirmed by the good accordance of the calculated/experimental IR and Raman spectra. The best DFT method appeared to be M06-2X with the Lanl2mb basis set, followed closely by Lanl2dz. The effect of the lanthanide atom on the molecular structure and atomic charge distribution of the triazole ring was evaluated. The potential free radical scavenging activity of both the ligand and the complex was investigated in several radical-generating model systems. The potential mechanisms of antioxidant action (hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and single-electron transfer (SET)) were elucidated.

Lanthanum Oxide Nanoparticles Reinforced Collagen ƙ-Carrageenan Hydroxyapatite Biocomposite as Angio-Osteogenic Biomaterial for In Vivo Osseointegration and Bone Repair

A composite biomatrix fabricated with collagen, ƙ-carrageenan, hydroxyapatite reinforced with lanthanum oxide nanoparticles is explored as proangiogenic and osteogenic bone tissue repair biomaterial. The biomatrix shows increased physical and biological stability as observed from proteolytic degradation and thermal stability studies. The addition of lanthanum oxide nanoparticles facilitates good osseointegration coupled with simultaneous activation of proangiogenic properties to act as a bone mimicking material. The minimal level of reactive oxygen species and superior cytocompatibility help the as-synthesized biomatrix in achieving capillary migration into the bone micro environment. The composite biomatrix upregulates the expression of VEGF, VEGF-R2 genes in endothelial cells and osteopontin, osteocalcin in osteoblasts cells, respectively. The in vivo hard tissue repair experiment conducted in a rat model shows complete healing of the bone defect by eight weeks with the application of collagen-ƙ-carrageenan-hydroxyapatite-lanthanum oxide nanoparticle biomaterial when compared to the biomaterial made out of individual constituents alone. The biomaterial matrix gets biointegrated into the bone tissue and exerts its therapeutic value in bringing a faster osseo repair process. The study shows the feasibility of using rare-earth metal nanoparticles in combination with protein-polysaccharide biopolymers for bone regeneration.

Molecular insights into rare earth element (REE)-mediated phytotoxicity and its impact on human health

Rare earth elements (REEs) that include 15 lanthanides, scandium, and yttrium are a special class of elements due to their remarkable qualities such as magnetism, corrosion resistance, luminescence, and electroconductivity. Over the last few decades, the implication of REEs in agriculture has increased substantially, which was driven by rare earth element (REE)-based fertilizers to increase crop growth and yield. REEs regulate different physiological processes by modulating the cellular Ca2+ level, chlorophyll activities, and photosynthetic rate, promote the protective role of cell membranes, and increase the plant's ability to withstand various stresses and other environmental factors. However, the use of REEs in agriculture is not always beneficial because REEs regulate plant growth and development in dose-dependent manner and excessive usage of them negatively affects plants and agricultural yield. Moreover, increasing applications of REEs together with technological advancement is also a rising concern as they adversely impact all living organisms and disturb different ecosystems. Several animals, plants, microbes, and aquatic and terrestrial organisms are subject to acute and long-term ecotoxicological impacts of various REEs. This concise overview of REEs' phytotoxic effects and implications on human health offers a context for continuing to sew fabric scraps to this incomplete quilt's many layers and colors. This review deals with the applications of REEs in different fields, specifically agriculture, the molecular basis of REE-mediated phytotoxicity, and the consequences for human health.

Scandium, yttrium, and lanthanide occurrence in Cantharellus cibarius and C. minor mushrooms

There is a dearth of data on rare earth elements (REE), yttrium and scandium in foods which extends also to baseline datasets for edible wild mushrooms, though this has started to change in the last decade. Concentrations and shale normalized patterns of REE and Y (REY) were studied by using inductively coupled plasma-quadrupole mass spectrometer in 22 pools (2235 specimens) of Cantharellus cibarius (Golden Chanterelle) collected in Poland and also a pool of C. minor (Small Chanterelle) (153 specimens) from Yunnan (Chinese Province). The total REY plus Sc varied in C. cibarius from 10 to 593 µg kg^-1 dw whereas that for the Yunnan's C. minor was 2072 µg kg^-1 dw. C. minor from Yunnan has higher REY and Sc compared to the C. cibarius. Sc concentrations in twenty C. cibarius pools were below 1 µg kg^-1 dw, but 17 and 27 µg kg^-1 dw were detected at the other two sites and 66 µg kg^-1 dw was detected in C. minor. The median Y content of C. cibarius and C. minor was 22 µg kg^-1 dw and 200 µg kg^-1 dw. The difference in REY and Sc concentrations and shale normalized patterns between mushrooms from Poland and Yunnan seems to reflect the regional difference in concentration and composition of these elements in the soil bedrock.

The elements of life: A biocentric tour of the periodic table

Living systems are built from a small subset of the atomic elements, including the bulk macronutrients (C,H,N,O,P,S) and ions (Mg,K,Na,Ca) together with a small but variable set of trace elements (micronutrients). Here, we provide a global survey of how chemical elements contribute to life. We define five classes of elements: those that are (i) essential for all life, (ii) essential for many organisms in all three domains of life, (iii) essential or beneficial for many organisms in at least one domain, (iv) beneficial to at least some species, and (v) of no known beneficial use. The ability of cells to sustain life when individual elements are absent or limiting relies on complex physiological and evolutionary mechanisms (elemental economy). This survey of elemental use across the tree of life is encapsulated in a web-based, interactive periodic table that summarizes the roles chemical elements in biology and highlights corresponding mechanisms of elemental economy.

Letter to the editor: Comment on "multiannual monitoring (1974-2019) of rare earth elements in wild growing edible mushroom species in Polish forests" by Siwulski et al. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.chemosphere.2020.127173. A recurring question - What are the real concentrations and patterns of REE in mushrooms?

Siwulski et al. (2020) investigated the occurrence of the lanthanides (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu), scandium (Sc) and yttrium (Y) in 4 species of wild mushrooms, which were sampled over a 45 years period in Poland. The reported mean lanthanide concentrations for mushrooms were in the range from 539 to 1601 μg kg^-1 dry weight. These values are considered as highly elevated in the light of data published earlier for the same species, where the analytical results were assessed as not being biased by errors (these could arise from contamination of the samples with soil dust or unsuitable choice of analytical methodology including the use of unsuitable analytical instrumentation for measurement). It has long been established that the lanthanides are naturally distributed in ores, soil bedrock, soils, natural waters and plants in a pattern that reflects the Oddo-Harkins rule. This pattern is correspondingly reflected in fungi, including the same species and have been published earlier by other authors. However, when the individual lanthanide concentration data of B. edulis, I. badia, L. scabrum and M. procera from the study by Siwulski et al. are plotted, they do not display the expected sawtooth (zigzag) concentration pattern - in other words, the concentration data do not follow the Oddo-Harkins rule. Lanthanides are naturally found in very low concentration in foods including wild mushrooms. There is a striking lack of convergence in the results obtained for ICP-MS techniques, and the results obtained from ICP-OES measurement (as used by Siwulski et al.). If the reasons discussed here for anomalies in the reported lanthanides data hold true, how does this affect the data for other elements in mushrooms reported in the commented article?

Synthesis and In Vitro Testing of YVO(4):Eu(3+)@silica-NH-GDA-IgG Bio-Nano Complexes for Labelling MCF-7 Breast Cancer Cells

We present a visual tool and facile method to detect MCF-7 breast cancer cells by using YVO₄:Eu³⁺@silica-NH-GDA-IgG bio-nanocomplexes. To obtain these complexes, YVO₄:Eu³⁺ nanoparticles with a uniform size of 10-25 nm have been prepared firstly by the hydrothermal process, followed by surface functionalization to be bio-compatible and conjugated with cancer cells. The YVO₄:Eu³⁺@silica-NH-GDA-IgG nanoparticles exhibited an enhanced red emission at 618 nm under an excitation wavelength of 355 nm and were strongly coupled with MCF-7 breast cancer cells via biological conjugation. These bio-nanocomplexes showed a superior sensitiveness for MCF-7 cancer cell labelling with a detection percentage as high as 82%, while no HEK-293A healthy cells were probed under the same conditions of in vitro experiments. In addition, the detection percentage of MCF-7 breast cancer cells increased significantly via the functionalization and conjugation of YVO₄:Eu³⁺ nanoparticles. The experimental results demonstrated that the YVO₄:Eu³⁺@silica-NH-GDA-IgG bio-nanocomplexes can be used as a promising labelling agent for biomedical imaging and diagnostics.

Chitosan-based Dy2O3/CuFe3O4 bio-nanocomposite development, characterization, and drug release kinetics

Chitosan (CS)/metal oxide (MO) nano-carriers have recently attracted attention due to their great integration into several biomedical applications. Herein, CS and dysprosium oxide based bio-nanocomposites (Dy₂O₃/CuFe₃O₄/CS) were prepared using a citrate sol-gel route for biomedical settings at large and drug delivery, in particular. The chemical structure, average crystallite size, and surface morphology of Dy₂O₃/CuFe₃O₄/CS bio-nanocomposites were characterized using spectroscopic techniques, including FT-IR, PXRD, and SEM. The prepared nano composite's drug loading or release kinetics were investigated by FT-IR, zeta potential (ZP), and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis). In the FT-IR spectrum, the peaks in the range of 800-400 cm^-1 confirmed the formation of meta-oxides, while amide bands at 1661 and 1638 cm^-1 revealed the existence of CS in the bio-nanocomposite. The peaks at 2θ = 35.46 and 28.5, 39.4 indicated the presence and chemical interaction of Dy₂O₃ and CuFe₃O_4, respectively. The crystallite size was <20 nm. The model drug used in the loading and in vitro release assays was ciprofloxacin hydrochloride. Ciprofloxacin's CF stretch caused a modest peak to be seen at 1082 cm^-1 and changed in zeta potential value from 7.90 mV to 8.88 mV endorsing that the drug had been loaded onto the nanomaterial. The loading efficiency (%) of CIP onto the composite was from 25 to 30 %, calculated from optical density measurements. Different kinetic models, such as zero-order, first-order, Higuchi, Hixon-Crowell, and Korsmeyer-Peppas, were determined to confirm the drug release mechanism. The percent (%) of drug release from the surface of Dy₂O₃/CuFe₃O₄/CS in PBS (pH 7.4), acidic (pH 2.2) and basic (pH 9.4) dissolution media were found to be 70, 28 and 20 %, respectively. Drug kinetics showed that mainly the release is fickian type followed "Fick's law of diffusion", slightly deviated from fickian release (dissolution-dependent system). Korsmeyer-Peppas (R² 0.9773, n < 0.4) and Higuchi's (R² 0.9846) models were the best for fitting controlled drug release data. The results revealed that the Dy₂O₃/CuFe₃O₄/CS bio-nanocomposite has good potential for a controlled drug delivery system.

Lanthanum oxide nanoparticle-collagen bio matrix induced endothelial cell activation for sustained angiogenic response for biomaterial integration

Rare earth lanthanum oxide nanoparticle reinforced collagen biomatrix that elicited the endothelial cell activation to promote angiogenesis for biomaterial integration was developed and evaluated in the present study. The structural integrity of collagen was not compromised on crosslinking of lanthanum oxide nanoparticle to collagen biomolecule. As-synthesised collagen biomatrix was shown to have improved mechanical strength, a lesser susceptibility to proteolytic degradation and good swelling properties. Superior cytocompatibility, hemocompatibility and minimal ROS generation was observed with Lanthanum oxide nanoparticle reinforced collagen bio matrix. The Lanthanum oxide nanoparticle reinforced collagen bio matrix elicited endothelial cell activation eliciting pro-angiogensis as observed in tube formation and aortic arch assays. The bio-matrix promoted the infiltration and proliferation of endothelial cells which is an unexplored domain in the area of tissue engineering that is very essential for biomaterial integration into host tissue. The wound healing effect of Lanthanum oxide nanoparticle stabilized collagen showed enhanced cell migration in vitro in cells maintained in Lanthanum oxide nanoparticle reinforced collagen bio matrix. The study paves the way for developing rare earth-based dressing materials which promoted biomatrix integration by enhancing vascularisation for tissue regenerative applications in comparison with traditional biomaterials.

Substituted Poly(Vinylphosphonate) Coatings of Magnetite Nanoparticles and Clusters

Magnetite nanoparticles and clusters of nanoparticles have been of Increasing scientific interest in the past decades. In order to prepare nanoparticles and clusters that are stable in suspension, different coatings have been used. Phosphates and phosphonates are a preferred anchoring group for the coating of magnetite nanomaterials. However, poly(vinylphosphonates) have rarely been used as a coating agent for any nanoparticles. Here, poly(methylvinylphosphonate) and other substituted polyvinylphosphonates are described as new coatings for magnetite nanoparticles and clusters. They show great stability in aqueous suspension. This is also the first time phosphonate-coated magnetite clusters have been synthesized in a one-pot polyol reaction. The coated magnetite nanoparticles and clusters have been characterized by TEM, EDX, FTIR, magnetization measurement, XRD as well as XPS. It has been shown that substituted vinylphosphonates can be easily synthesized in one-step procedures and as a polymeric coating can imbue important properties such as stability in suspension, tight binding to the particle surface, the ability to be further functionalized or to tightly adsorb metal ions. For the synthesis of magnetite clusters the cluster formation, polymerization and coating are done in a one-pot reaction and the resulting magnetite clusters show a higher amount of phosphonate coating than with a three-step procedure including a ligand exchange.

The periodic table of the elements: the search for transactinides and beyond

The periodic table of Mendeleev, initially proposed on the basis of 66 elements, and containing 82 elements at the time of Moseley (1887–1915), describes nowadays 118 elements. The huge challenge of this scientific adventure was, and still is, the development of technologies and methods capable of producing elements of atomic number Z > 103, known as superheavy elements (SHE), or transactinides. This paper presents a survey of experiments and theoretical approaches that led physicists and chemists of today to discover and characterize a number of SHE isotopes. A glance is also given to the feasibility studies performed by scientists aiming to going beyond Z = 118, building up further neutron-rich nuclides and reaching the ultimate goal of creating long-living new elements at the edge of the Periodic Table.

Mass Cytometry for the Characterization of Individual Cell Types in Ovarian Solid Tumors

Mass cytometry aka Cytometry by Time-Of-Flight (CyTOF) is one of several recently developed multiparametric single-cell technologies designed to address cellular heterogeneity within healthy and diseased tissue. Mass cytometry is an adaptation of flow cytometry in which antibodies are labeled with stable heavy metal isotopes and the readout is by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. With minimal spillover between channels, mass cytometry enables readouts of up to 60 parameters per single cell. Critically, mass cytometry can identify minority cell populations that are lost in bulk tissue analysis. Mass cytometry has been used to great effect for the study of immune cells. We have extended its use to examine single cells within disaggregated solid tissues, specifically freshly resected tubo-ovarian high-grade serous tumors. Here we detail our protocols designed to ensure the production of high-quality single-cell datasets. The methodology can be modified to accommodate the study of other solid tissues.

Sources, distribution and effects of rare earth elements in the marine environment: Current knowledge and research gaps

Rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) are critical elements for a wide range of applications and consumer products. Their growing extraction and use can potentially lead to REY and anthropogenic-REY chemical complexes (ACC-REY) being released in the marine environment, causing concern regarding their potential effects on organisms and ecosystems. Here, we critically review the scientific knowledge on REY sources (geogenic and anthropogenic), factors affecting REY distribution and transfer in the marine environment, as well as accumulation in- and effects on marine biota. Further, we aim to draw the attention to research gaps that warrant further scientific attention to assess the potential risk posed by anthropogenic REY release. Geochemical processes affecting REY mobilisation from natural sources and factors affecting their distribution and transfer across marine compartments are well established, featuring a high variability dependent on local conditions. There is, however, a research gap with respect to evaluating the environmental distribution and fate of REY from anthropogenic sources, particularly regarding ACC-REY, which can have a high persistence in seawater. In addition, data on organismal uptake, accumulation, organ distribution and effects are scarce and at best fragmentary. Particularly, the effects of ACC-REY at organismal and community levels are, so far, not sufficiently studied. To assess the potential risks caused by anthropogenic REY release there is an urgent need to i) harmonise data reporting to promote comparability across studies and environmental matrices, ii) conduct research on transport, fate and behaviour of ACC-REY vs geogenic REY iii) deepen the knowledge on bioavailability, accumulation and effects of ACC-REY and REY mixtures at organismal and community level, which is essential for risk assessment of anthropogenic REY in marine ecosystems.

"Size or mass" which plays a role? An investigation on the optical and ultrasonic properties of chitosan-lanthanide composites

In this present exploration, chitosan doped with different lanthanide oxides such as CeO₂, Nd₂O₃, Sm₂O₃, Eu₂O₃, Gd₂O₃, Dy₂O₃ and Ho₂O₃ has been prepared and its optical and thermodynamical properties were studied as a function of the ion size of the lanthanide element and its atomic masses. From the refractive index measurement, the space-filling factor and polarizability have been obtained. The propagation of ultrasonic waves like ultrasonic velocity and its derived quantities such as relaxation strength (r_s), adiabatic bulk modulus (K_s), acoustic impedance (Z) and adiabatic compressibility (β) have been obtained for different Chitosan-Lanthanide oxides (Ch-LnO). FTIR studies confirm the formation of different Ch-LnO. The variation of all the said properties with ion size is opposite to that of atomic mass due to lanthanide contraction. The results are presented and discussed in a detailed manner.

Nanotized praseodymium oxide collagen 3-D pro-vasculogenic biomatrix for soft tissue engineering

The current study explores development of highly vascularizable biomatrix scaffold containing rare-earth metal praseodymium oxide nanoadditives for angiogenic and soft tissue regenerative applications. The therapeutic potential of praseodymium oxide nanoparticles rendered excellent endothelial cell differentiation for inducing pro angiogenic microenvironment by eliciting VE-Cadherin expression in the biomatrix scaffold. The nanoparticles were incorporated into bio-macromolecule collagen which aided in stabilization of collagen by maintaining the structural integrity of collagen and showed less susceptibility towards protease enzymes, high cyto-compatibility and high hemo-compatibility. The scaffold provided 3-dimensional micro-environments for the proliferation of endothelial cells and fibroblast cells promoting the wound healing process in an orchestrated fashion. Biological signal modulatory property of rare earth metal is the unexplored domains that can essentially bring significant therapeutic advancement in engineering advanced biological materials. This study opens potential use of nano-scaled rare earth metals in biomaterial application for tissue regeneration by modulating the pro-angiogenesis and anti-proteolysis properties.
