Erbium(III) complexes with fluoroquinolones: Structure and biological properties

Four erbium(III) complexes with the fluoroquinolones enrofloxacin, levofloxacin, flumequine and sparfloxacin as ligands were synthesized and characterized by a wide range of physicochemical and spectroscopic techniques as well as single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The compounds were evaluated for their activity against the bacterial strains Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Xanthomonas campestris, which was higher than that of the corresponding free quinolones. The interaction mode of the complexes with calf-thymus DNA is via intercalation, as suggested by diverse studies such as UV-vis spectroscopy, DNA-viscosity measurements and competitive studies with ethidium bromide. Fluorescence emission spectroscopy revealed the high affinity of the complexes for bovine and human serum albumin and the determined binding constants suggested a tight and reversible binding of the compounds with both albumins.

Excitation wavelength-dependent lanthanide-disalicylaldehyde coordination hybrid capable of distinguishing D2O from H2O

The increasing demands in fields of anti-counterfeiting, fluorescence analysis, clinical therapy and LED illumination are urgently eager for more excellent optically switchable luminescent materials with the stable and multimodal fluorescence in single-component matrix. Herein, the lanthanide-disalicylaldehyde coordination hybrid H2Qj4/TbxEuy is proposed as an efficient luminescent matrix to connect terbium sensibilization with ESIPT (excited-state intramolecular proton transfer) effects, and three multi-emission hybrids are finally designed and synthesized by regulating Tb3+ and Eu3+ ratios. Surprisingly, the H2Qj4/Tb0.91Eu0.09 shows the excitation wavelength-dependent luminescence in solution which originates from two energy transfer ways of terbium sensibilization effect. It exhibits green and red lights under the 369 and 394 nm UV lamp, respectively. Three hybrids are further used as lab-on-a-molecule fluorescent probes to perform multianalyte detection for various solvents by selected fluorescent sensing channels. By means of PCA (principal component analysis) and HCA (hierarchical cluster analysis), all of them can successfully detect and discriminate17 common solvents, especially the H2O and D2O. Moreover, the H2Qj4/Tb0.91Eu0.09 also shows the wide linear responses of H2O content in D2O, discrimination of two-component solvent mixtures, hygroscopicity evaluation of D2O and information encryption which will advance the progress of multimodal luminescent materials and multianalyte chemosensors.

Nucleic acids based integrated macromolecular complexes for SiRNA delivery: Recent advancements

The therapeutic potential of small interfering RNA (siRNA) is monumental, offering a pathway to silence disease-causing genes with precision. However, the delivery of siRNA to target cells in-vivo remains a formidable challenge, owing to degradation by nucleases, poor cellular uptake and immunogenicity. This overview examines recent advancements in the design and application of nucleic acid-based integrated macromolecular complexes for the efficient delivery of siRNA. We dissect the innovative delivery vectors developed in recent years, including lipid-based nanoparticles, polymeric carriers, dendrimer complexes and hybrid systems that incorporate stimuli-responsive elements for targeted and controlled release. Advancements in bioconjugation techniques, active targeting strategies and nanotechnology-enabled delivery platforms are evaluated for their contribution to enhancing siRNA delivery. It also addresses the complex interplay between delivery system design and biological barriers, highlighting the dynamic progress and remaining hurdles in translating siRNA therapies from bench to bedside. By offering a comprehensive overview of current strategies and emerging technologies, we underscore the future directions and potential impact of siRNA delivery systems in personalized medicine.

Postoperatively Noninvasive Optogenetic Stimulation via Upconversion Nanoparticles Enhancing Sciatic Nerve Repair

The efficacy of electrical stimulation facilitating peripheral nerve regeneration is evidenced extensively, while the associated secondary damage resulting from repeated electrode invasion and indiscriminate stimulation is inevitable. Here, we present an optogenetics strategy that utilizes upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) to convert deeply penetrating near-infrared excitation into blue emission, which activates an adeno-associated virus-encoding ChR2 photoresponsive ion channel on cell membranes. The induced Ca2+ flux, similar to the ion flux in the electrical stimulation approach, efficiently regulates viability and proliferation, secretion of nerve growth factor, and neural function of RSC96 cells. Furthermore, deep near-infrared excitation is harnessed to stimulate autologous Schwann cells in situ via a UCNP-composited scaffold, which enhances nerve sprouting and myelination, consequently promoting functional recovery, electrophysiological restoration, and reinnervation of damaged nerves. This developed postoperatively noninvasive optogenetics strategy presents a novel, minimally traumatic, and enduring therapeutic stimulus to effectively promote peripheral nerve repair.

White light-emitting ZnO:Dy3+ nanophosphors: delving into the spectroscopic parameters via Judd-Ofelt analysis

Developing a single-phase white emitting nanophosphor with high quantum efficiency has become a hotspot for scientific world. Herein, single-phase white-light emitting Zn1-xO:xDy3+ nanophosphors have been synthesized via a sonochemical method. X-ray diffraction analysis and Raman spectroscopy-based investigations confirmed the hexagonal wurtzite phase for Zn1-xO:xDy3+ nanophosphors with preferential growth along the (101) plane. Scanning electron microscopy images showed the formation of a ribbon-shaped morphology with a diameter of ∼25 nm. The emission spectra of the Dy3+-activated ZnO nanophosphors exhibited three distinct peaks, namely blue (480 nm), yellow (572 nm), and red (635 nm) emissions, under near-UV excitations related to the 4F9/2 → 6HJ (J = 15/2, 13/2, and 11/2) transitions of Dy3+ ions. The values of CIE chromaticity coordinates for the optimized phosphor (x = 0.329, y = 0.334) with correlated color temperature (CCT) of 5657 K indicated cool white-light emission from the phosphor. The thermal stability of ZnO:Dy3+ nanophosphors was probed by temperature-dependent luminescence. Quantitative evaluation of Judd-Ofelt intensity parameters, radiative parameters, luminescence decay, and quantum efficiency of Zn1-xO:xDy3+ using the J-O theory suggests that these nanophosphors are promising luminescent media for commercial white LEDs and other display devices.

Triplet-triplet annihilation photon upconversion-mediated photochemical reactions

Photon upconversion is a method for harnessing high-energy excited states from low-energy photons. Such photons, particularly in the red and near-infrared wavelength ranges, can penetrate tissue deeply and undergo less competitive absorption in coloured reaction media, enhancing the efficiency of large-scale reactions and in vivo phototherapy. Among various upconversion methodologies, the organic-based triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) stands out - demonstrating high upconversion efficiencies, requiring low excitation power densities and featuring tunable absorption and emission wavelengths. These factors contribute to improved photochemical reactions for fields such as photoredox catalysis, photoactivation, 3D printing and immunotherapy. In this Review, we explore concepts and design principles of organic TTA-UC-mediated photochemical reactions, highlighting notable advancements in the field, as well as identify challenges and propose potential solutions. This Review sheds light on the potential of organic TTA-UC to advance beyond the traditional photochemical reactions and paves the way for research in various fields and clinical applications.

A biodegradable Zn-5Gd alloy with biomechanical compatibility, cytocompatibility, antibacterial ability, and in vitro and in vivo osteogenesis for orthopedic applications

Zinc (Zn) and some of its alloys are recognized as promising biodegradable implant materials due to their acceptable biocompatibility, facile processability, and moderate degradation rate. Nevertheless, the limited mechanical properties and stability of as-cast Zn alloys hinder their clinical application. In this work, hot-rolled (HR) and hot-extruded (HE) Zn-5 wt.% gadolinium (Zn-5Gd) samples were prepared by casting and respectively combining with hot rolling and hot extrusion for bone-implant applications. Their microstructure evolution, mechanical properties, corrosion behavior, cytotoxicity, antibacterial ability, and in vitro and in vivo osteogenesis were systematically evaluated. The HR and HE Zn-5Gd exhibited significantly improved mechanical properties compared with those of their pure Zn counterparts and the HR Zn-5Gd showed a unique combination of tensile properties with an ultimate tensile strength of ∼311.6 MPa, yield strength of ∼236.5 MPa, and elongation of ∼40.6%, all of which are greater than the mechanical properties required for bone-implant materials. The HR and HE Zn-5Gd showed higher corrosion resistance than their pure Zn counterpart in Hanks' solution and the HE Zn-5Gd had the lowest corrosion rate of 155 µm/y measured by electrochemical corrosion and degradation rate of 26.9 µm/y measured by immersion testing. The HR and HE Zn-5Gd showed high cytocompatibility toward MC3T3-E1 and MG-63 cells, high antibacterial effects against S. aureus, and better in vitro osteogenic activity than their pure Zn counterparts. Furthermore, the HE Zn-5Gd exhibited better in vivo biocompatibility, osteogenesis, and osteointegration ability than pure Zn and pure Ti. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: This work reports the mechanical properties, corrosion behaviors, cytocompatibility, antibacterial ability, in vitro and in vivo osteogenesis of biodegradable Zn-Gd alloy for bone-implant applications. Our findings demonstrate that the hot-rolled (HR) Zn-5Gd showed a unique combination of tensile properties with an ultimate tensile strength of ∼311.6 MPa, yield strength of ∼236.5 MPa, and elongation of ∼40.6%. The HR and HE Zn-5Gd showed higher corrosion resistance than their pure Zn counterpart in Hanks' solution. The HR and HE Zn-5Gd showed high cytocompatibility toward MC3T3-E1 and MG-63 cells, good antibacterial effects against S. aureus, and better in vitro osteogenic activity. Furthermore, the HE Zn-5Gd exhibited better in vivo biocompatibility, osteogenesis, and osteointegration ability than pure Zn and pure Ti.

Quantum Dot Fluorescent Imaging: Using Atomic Structure Correlation Studies to Improve Photophysical Properties

Efforts to study intricate, higher-order cellular functions have called for fluorescence imaging under physiologically relevant conditions such as tissue systems in simulated native buffers. This endeavor has presented novel challenges for fluorescent probes initially designed for use in simple buffers and monolayer cell culture. Among current fluorescent probes, semiconductor nanocrystals, or quantum dots (QDs), offer superior photophysical properties that are the products of their nanoscale architectures and chemical formulations. While their high brightness and photostability are ideal for these biological environments, even state of the art QDs can struggle under certain physiological conditions. A recent method correlating electron microscopy ultrastructure with single-QD fluorescence has begun to highlight subtle structural defects in QDs once believed to have no significant impact on photoluminescence (PL). Specific defects, such as exposed core facets, have been shown to quench QD PL in physiologically accurate conditions. For QD-based imaging in complex cellular systems to be fully realized, mechanistic insight and structural optimization of size and PL should be established. Insight from single QD resolution atomic structure and photophysical correlative studies provides a direct course to synthetically tune QDs to match these challenging environments.

Nanosized Prussian blue and its analogs for bioimaging and cancer theranostics

Prussian blue (PB) nanoparticles (NPs) and Prussian blue analogs (PBAs) can form metal-organic frameworks through the programmable coordination of ferrous ions with cyanide. PB and PBAs represent a burgeoning class of hybrid functional nano-systems with a wide-ranging application spectrum encompassing biomedicine, cancer diagnosis, and therapy. A comprehensive overview of recent advancements is crucial for gaining insights for future research. In this context, we reviewed the synthesis techniques and surface modification strategies employed to tailor the dimensions, morphology, and attributes of PB NPs. Subsequently, we explored advanced biomedical utilities of PB NPs, encompassing photoacoustic imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound (US) imaging, and multimodal imaging. In particular, the application of PB NPs-mediated photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, and chemodynamic therapy to cancer treatment was reviewed. Based on the literature, we envision an evolving trajectory wherein the future of Prussian blue-driven biological applications converge into an integrated theranostic platform, seamlessly amalgamating bioimaging and cancer therapy. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Prussian blue, an FDA-approved coordinative pigment with a centuries-long legacy, has paved the way for Prussian blue nanoparticles (PB NPs), renowned for their remarkable biocompatibility and biosafety. These PB NPs have found their niche in biomedicine, playing crucial roles in both diagnostics and therapeutic applications. The comprehensive review goes beyond PB NP-based cancer therapy. Alongside in-depth coverage of PB NP synthesis and surface modifications, the review delves into their cutting-edge applications in the realm of biomedical imaging, encompassing techniques such as photoacoustic imaging, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound imaging, and multimodal imaging.

The Art of Nanoparticle Design: Unconventional Morphologies for Advancing Luminescent Technologies

The advanced design of rare-earth-doped (RE-doped) fluoride nanoparticles has expanded their applications ranging from anticounterfeiting luminescence and contactless temperature measurement to photodynamic therapy. Several recent studies have focused on developing rare morphologies of RE-doped nanoparticles. Distinct physical morphologies of RE-doped fluoride materials set them apart from contemporary nanoparticles. Every unusual structure holds the potential to dramatically improve the physical performance of nanoparticles, resulting in a remarkable revolution and a wide range of applications. This comprehensive review serves as a guide offering insights into various uniquely structured nanoparticles, including hollow, dumbbell-shaped, and peasecod-like forms. It aims to cater to both novices and experts interested in exploring the morphological transformations of nanoparticles. Discovering new energy transfer pathways and enhancing the optical application performance have been long-term challenges for which new solutions can be found in old papers. In the future, nanoparticle morphology design is expected to involve more refined microphysical methods and chemically-induced syntheses. Targeted modification of nanoparticle morphology and the aggregation of nanoparticles of various shapes can provide the advantages of different structures and enhance the universality of nanoparticles.

Recent advances in lanthanide-based POMs for photoluminescent applications

Since the first formation of the famous "Peacock-Weakley" anions [Ln(W5O18)2]8/9-, a steady stream of breakthroughs have been made in the chemistry of multitalented lanthanide (Ln)-based polyoxometalates (POMs) for their potentially desirable properties. In particular, LnIII ions are generally recognised as the "vitamins of the modern industry" owing to their ability to cover a wide emission range, endowing Ln-based POMs with great potential for versatile and diverse luminescence-related applications. In this frontier, we discuss the synthesis strategies and intramolecular energy transfer in Ln-based POM derivatives. Then, the progressive improvements achieved with Ln-based POMs in photoluminescence applications are highlighted, focusing mainly on luminescent and fluorescent probes. Finally, the challenges for Ln-based POM materials for photoluminescence applications are discussed.

Hybrid DFT Geometries and Properties for 17k Lanthanoid Complexes─The LnQM Data Set

The unique properties of lanthanoids and their diverse applications make them an indispensable part of modern research and industry. While the field has garnered attention, there remains a gap in available molecule data sets that facilitate both classical quantum chemistry calculations and the burgeoning field of machine learning in data science applications. This research addresses the need for a comprehensive data set that allows for a comparative analysis of various lanthanoids. The herein presented, curated data set includes 17269 monolanthanoid complexes derived from 1205 distinct ligand motifs. Structures encompass all 15 lanthanoids in the +3 oxidation state and exhibit molecular charges ranging from -1 to +3, including structures with a high spin multiplicity up to 8. Starting from lanthanum complexes, samples were processed with a permutation of the central lanthanoid atom, resulting in highly comparable subsets, facilitating comparative studies in which the influence of the lanthanoid can be investigated independently of ligand effects. The data set provides a broad range of features such as PBE0-D4/def2-SVP optimized geometries and optimization trajectories, while also covering ωB97M-V/def2-SVPD energies, rotational constants, dipole moments, highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest-unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO-LUMO) energies, and Mulliken, Löwdin, and Hirshfeld population analyses. Additionally, coordination numbers, polarizabilities, and partial charges from D4, electronegativity equilibration (EEQ), GFN2-xTB, and charge extended Hückel (CEH) calculations are included. The data set is openly accessible and may serve as a basis for further investigations into the properties of lanthanoids.

Photophysics and its application in photon upconversion

Photoluminescence (PL) upconversion is a phenomenon involving light-matter interaction, where the energy of the emitted photons is higher than that of the incident photons. PL upconversion has promising applications in optoelectronic devices, displays, photovoltaics, imaging, diagnosis and treatment. In this review, we summarize the mechanism of PL upconversion and ultrafast PL physical processes. In particular, we highlight the advances in laser cooling, biological imaging, volumetric displays and photonics.

Enhancing Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Upconversion of Pyrene Derivatives for Photoredox Catalysis via Molecular Engineering

Triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) has the potential to enhance photoredox catalysis yield. It includes a sensitizer and an annihilator. Efficient and stable annihilators are essential for photoredox catalysis, yet only a few examples are reported. Herein, we designed four novel pyrene annihilators (1, 2, 3 and 4) via introducing aryl-alkynyl groups onto pyrene to systematically modulate their singlet and triplet energies. Coupled with platinum octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP), the TTA-UC efficiency is enhanced gradually as the number of aryl-alkynyl group increases. When combining 4 with palladium tetraphenyl-tetrabenzoporphyrin (PdTPTBP), we achieved the highest red-to-green upconversion efficiency (22.4±0.3 %) (out of a 50 % maximum) so far. Then, this pair was used to activate photooxidation of aryl boronic acid under red light (630 nm), which achieved a great improved reaction yield compared to that activated by green light directly. The results not only provide a design strategy for efficient annihilators, but also show the advantage of applying TTA-UC into improving the photoredox catalysis yield.

Near-Infrared-Responsive Rare Earth Nanoparticles for Optical Imaging and Wireless Phototherapy

Near-infrared (NIR) light is well-suited for the optical imaging and wireless phototherapy of malignant diseases because of its deep tissue penetration, low autofluorescence, weak tissue scattering, and non-invasiveness. Rare earth nanoparticles (RENPs) are promising NIR-responsive materials, owing to their excellent physical and chemical properties. The 4f electron subshell of lanthanides, the main group of rare earth elements, has rich energy-level structures. This facilitates broad-spectrum light-to-light conversion and the conversion of light to other forms of energy, such as thermal and chemical energies. In addition, the abundant loadable and modifiable sites on the surface offer favorable conditions for the functional expansion of RENPs. In this review, the authors systematically discuss the main processes and mechanisms underlying the response of RENPs to NIR light and summarize recent advances in their applications in optical imaging, photothermal therapy, photodynamic therapy, photoimmunotherapy, optogenetics, and light-responsive drug release. Finally, the challenges and opportunities for the application of RENPs in optical imaging and wireless phototherapy under NIR activation are considered.

Modulation of proteins by rare earth elements as a biotechnological tool

Although rare earth element (REE) complexes are often utilized in bioimaging due to their photo- and redox stability, magnetic and optical characteristics, they are also applied for pharmaceutical applications due to their interaction with macromolecules namely proteins. The possible implications induced by REEs through modification in the function or regulatory activity of the proteins trigger a variety of applications for these elements in biomedicine and biotechnology. Lanthanide complexes have particularly been applied as anti-biofilm agents, cancer inhibitors, potential inflammation inhibitors, metabolic elicitors, and helper agents in the cultivation of unculturable strains, drug delivery, tissue engineering, photodynamic, and radiation therapy. This paper overviews emerging applications of REEs in biotechnology, especially in biomedical imaging, tumor diagnosis, and treatment along with their potential toxic effects. Although significant advances in applying REEs have been made, there is a lack of comprehensive studies to identify the potential of all REEs in biotechnology since only four elements, Eu, Ce, Gd, and La, among 17 REEs have been mostly investigated. However, in depth research on ecotoxicology, environmental behavior, and biological functions of REEs in the health and disease status of living organisms is required to fill the vital gaps in our understanding of REEs applications.

Molecularly Targeted Lanthanide Nanoparticles for Cancer Theranostic Applications

Injectable colloidal solutions of lanthanide oxides (nanoparticles between 10 and 100 nm in size) have demonstrated high biocompatibility and no toxicity when the nanoparticulate units are functionalized with specific biomolecules that molecularly target various proteins in the tumor microenvironment. Among the proteins successfully targeted by functionalized lanthanide nanoparticles are folic receptors, fibroblast activation protein (FAP), gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRP-R), prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), and integrins associated with tumor neovasculature. Lutetium, samarium, europium, holmium, and terbium, either as lanthanide oxide nanoparticles or as nanoparticles doped with lanthanide ions, have demonstrated their theranostic potential through their ability to generate molecular images by magnetic resonance, nuclear, optical, or computed tomography imaging. Likewise, photodynamic therapy, targeted radiotherapy (neutron-activated nanoparticles), drug delivery guidance, and image-guided tumor therapy are some examples of their potential therapeutic applications. This review provides an overview of cancer theranostics based on lanthanide nanoparticles coated with specific peptides, ligands, and proteins targeting the tumor microenvironment.

Enhancing NIR-II Upconversion Monochromatic Emission for Temperature Sensing

The upconversion luminescence (UCL) in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II) is highly attractive due to its excellent performance in high-resolution bioimaging, anticounterfeiting, and temperature sensing. However, upconvertion nanoparticles (UCNPs) are normally emitted in visible light, potentially impacting the imaging quality. Here, a monochromatic Er3+ -rich (NaErF4 :x%Yb@NaYF4 ) nanoparticles with excitation at 1532 nm and emission at 978 nm is proposed, both situated in the NIR-II region. The proper proportion of Yb3+ ions doping has a positive effect on the NIR-II emission, by enhancing the cross relaxation efficiency and accelerating the energy transfer rate. Owing to the interaction between the Er3+ and Yb3+ is inhibited at low temperatures, the UCL emission intensities at visible and NIR-II regions show opposite trend with temperature changing, which establishes a fitting formula to derive temperature from the luminous intensity ratio, promoting the potential application of UCL in NIR-II regions for the temperature sensing.

Green synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles using aqueous extract of shilajit and their anticancer activity against HeLa cells

In the present study, ZnO nanoparticles have been synthesized using an aqueous extract of shilajit. The nanoparticles were characterized using different techniques such as UV (ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared), XRD (X-ray diffraction), particle size analysis, SEM (scanning electron microscope) and EDAX (Energy-dispersive X-ray) analysis. The UV absorption peak at 422.40 nm was observed for ZnO nanoparticles. SEM analysis showed the shape of nanoparticles to be spherical, FTIR spectrum confirmed the presence of zinc atoms, particle size analysis showed the nanoparticle size, EDAX confirmed the purity of ZnO nanoparticles whereas XRD pattern similar to that of JCPDS card for ZnO confirmed the presence of pure ZnO nanoparticles. The in vitro anticancer activity of ZnO nanoparticles against the HeLa cell line showed the IC50 value of 38.60 μg/mL compared to reference standard cisplatin. This finding confirms that ZnO nanoparticles from shilajit extract have potent cytotoxic effect on human cervical cancer cell lines.

Achieving Orthogonal Upconversion Luminescence of a Single Lanthanide Ion in Crystals for Optical Encryption

Optical encryption shows great potential in meeting the growing demand for advanced anti-counterfeiting in the information age. The development of upconversion luminescence (UCL) materials capable of emitting different colors of light in response to different external stimuli holds great promise in this field. However, the effective realization of multicolor UCL materials usually requires complex structural designs. In this work, orthogonal UCL is achieved in crystals with a simple structure simply by introducing modulator Tm3+ ions to control the photon transition processes between different energy levels of activator Er3+ ions. The obtained crystals emit red and green UCL when excited by 980 nm and 808 nm lasers, respectively. The orthogonal excitation-emission properties of crystals are shown to be very suitable for high-level optical encryption, which is important for information security and anti-counterfeiting. This work provides an effective strategy for obtaining orthogonal UCL in simple structural materials, which will encourage researchers to further explore novel orthogonal UCL materials and their applications, and has important implications for the development of the frontier photonic upconversion fields.

Enhancing the upconversion of Er3+ incorporated BaTiO3 by introducing oxygen vacancies

Lanthanide-incorporated crystals display the phenomenon of upconversion (UC), wherein near-infrared (NIR) light is converted into ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) emission with a narrow bandwidth. This unique photophysical property renders lanthanide UC materials highly promising for diverse applications. However, the limited quantum efficiency (∼3%) hinders the broader utilization of UC materials. Consequently, numerous studies have focused on overcoming this low efficiency. Notably, it has been observed that manipulation of the site symmetry in UC materials significantly enhances their UC efficiency. In this study, we investigate the UC enhancement of Er3+ incorporated BaTiO3 (E-BT) crystals through the introduction of oxygen vacancies (OV). The OV were created using a post-heat treatment method, and the annealing time was varied to control the quantity of OV. An optimal annealing time of 6 hours was determined for efficient OV generation, beyond which the OV content decreased. Remarkably, E-BT crystals with OV exhibited up to three-fold greater UC compared to those without OV. This outcome suggests that OV induce symmetry changes in the E-BT crystal structure. Furthermore, the degree of UC enhancement in E-BT was found to be proportional to the amount of OV present.

f-Element heavy pnictogen chemistry

The coordination and organometallic chemistry of the f-elements, that is group 3, lanthanide, and actinide ions, supported by nitrogen ligands, e.g. amides, imides, and nitrides, has become well developed over many decades. In contrast, the corresponding f-element chemisty with the heavier pnictogen analogues phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, and bismuth has remained significantly underdeveloped, due largely to a lack of suitable synthetic methodologies and also the inherent hard(f-element)-soft(heavier pnictogen) acid-base mismatch, but has begun to flourish in recent years. Here, we review complexes containing chemical bonds between the f-elements and heavy pnictogens from phosphorus to bismuth that spans five decades of endeavour. We focus on complexes whose identity has been unambiguously established by structural authentication by single-crystal X-ray diffraction with respect to their synthesis, characterisation, bonding, and reactivity, in order to provide a representative overview of this burgeoning area. By highlighting that much has been achieved but that there is still much to do this review aims to inspire, focus and guide future efforts in this area.

Redox-Active Cerium Fluoride Nanoparticles Selectively Modulate Cellular Response against X-ray Irradiation In Vitro

Ionizing radiation-induced damage in cancer and normal cells leads to apoptosis and cell death, through the intracellular oxidative stress, DNA damage and disorders of their metabolism. Irradiation doses that do not lead to the death of tumor cells can result in the emergence of radioresistant clones of these cells due to the rearrangement of metabolism and the emergence of new mutations, including those in the genes responsible for DNA repair. The search for the substances capable of modulating the functioning of the tumor cell repair system is an urgent task. Here we analyzed the effect of cerium(III) fluoride nanoparticles (CeF3 NPs) on normal (human mesenchymal stem cells-hMSC) and cancer (MCF-7 line) human cells after X-ray radiation. CeF3 NPs effectively prevent the formation of hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals in an irradiated aqueous solution, showing pronounced antioxidant properties. CeF3 NPs are able to protect hMSC from radiation-induced proliferation arrest, increasing their viability and mitochondrial membrane potential, and, conversely, inducing the cell death of MCF-7 cancer cells, causing radiation-induced mitochondrial hyperpolarization. CeF3 NPs provided a significant decrease in the number of double-strand breaks (DSBs) in hMSC, while in MCF-7 cells the number of γ-H2AX foci dramatically increased in the presence of CeF3 4 h after irradiation. In the presence of CeF3 NPs, there was a tendency to modulate the expression of most analyzed genes associated with the development of intracellular oxidative stress, cell redox status and the DNA-repair system after X-ray irradiation. Cerium-containing nanoparticles are capable of providing selective protection of hMSC from radiation-induced injuries and are considered as a platform for the development of promising clinical radioprotectors.

The Combination of Upconversion Nanoparticles and Perovskite Quantum Dots with Temperature-Dependent Emission Colors for Dual-Mode Anti-Counterfeiting Applications

Novel and high-security anti-counterfeiting technology has always been the focus of attention and research. This work proposes a nanocomposite combination of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) and perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs) to achieve color-adjustable dual-mode luminescence anti-counterfeiting. Firstly, a series of NaGdF4: Yb/Tm UCNPs with different sizes were synthesized, and their thermal-enhanced upconversion luminescence performances were investigated. The upconversion luminescence (UCL) intensity of the samples increases with rising temperature, and the UCL thermal enhancement factor rises as the particle size decreases. This intriguing thermal enhancement phenomenon can be attributed to the mitigation of surface luminescence quenching. Furthermore, CsPbBr3 PeQDs were well adhered to the surfaces and surroundings of the UCNPs. Leveraging energy transfer and the contrasting temperature responses of UCNPs and PeQDs, this nanocomposite was utilized as a dual-mode thermochromic anti-counterfeiting system. As the temperature increases, the color of the composite changes from green to pink under 980 nm excitation, while it displays green to non-luminescence under 365 nm excitation. This new anti-counterfeiting material, with its high security and convenience, has great potential in anti-counterfeiting applications.

Holmium (III)-doped multifunctional nanotheranostic agent for ultra-high-field magnetic resonance imaging-guided chemo-photothermal tumor therapy

Ultra-high-field (UHF) MRI has shown great advantages over low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Despite being the most commonly used MRI contrast agents, gadolinium chelates perform poorly in high magnetic fields, which significantly weakens their T1 intensity. In comparison, the rare element Holmium (Ho)-based nanoparticles (NPs) have demonstrated great potential as T2-weighted MRI contrast agents in UHF MRI due to their extremely short electron relaxation times (∼ 10-13s). In this study, a multifunctional nanotherapeutic probe was designed for UHF MRI-guided chemotherapy and photothermal therapy. The Ho (III)-doped mesoporous polydopamine (Ho-MPDA, HM) nanosphere was loaded with the chemotherapeutic drug mitoxantrone (MTO) and then coated with 4T1 cell membranes to enhance active targeting delivery to breast cancer. The prepared nanotherapeutic probe MTO@HMM@4T1 (HMM@T) exhibited good biocompatibility, high drug-loading capability and great potential as Ho (III)-based UHF MRI contrast agents. Moreover, the biodegradation of HMM@T in response to the intratumor pH and glutathione (GSH) promotes MTO release. Near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation of HM induced photothermal therapy and further enhanced drug release. Consequently, HMM@T effectively acted as an MRI-guided tumor-targeting chemo-photothermal therapy against 4T1 breast cancer. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Ultra-high-field (UHF) MRI has shown great advantages over low-field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although gadolinium chelates are the most commonly used MRI contrast agents in clinical practice, they exhibit a significantly decreased T1 relaxivity at UHF. Holmium exhibits outstanding UHF magnetic resonance capabilities in comparison with gadolinium chelates currently used in clinic. Herein, a theranostic nanodrug (HMM@T) was designed for UHF MRI-guided chemo-photothermal therapy. The nanodrug possessed remarkable UHF T2 MRI properties (r2 = 152.13 mM-1s-1) and high drug loading capability of 18.4 %. The biodegradation of HMM@T NPs under triple stimulations of pH, GSH, and NIR led to an efficient release of MTO in tumor microenvironment. Our results revealed the potential of a novel UHF MRI-guided multifunctional nanosystem in cancer treatment.

Innovative lanthanide complexes: Shaping the future of cancer/ tumor chemotherapy

Developing new therapeutic and diagnostic metals and metal complexes is a stunning example of how inorganic chemistry is rapidly becoming an essential part of modern medicine. More study of bio-coordination chemistry is needed to improve the design of compounds with fewer harmful side effects. Metal-containing drugs are widely utilized in the treatment of cancer. Platinum complexes are effective against some cancers, but new coordination compounds are being created with improved pharmacological properties and a broader spectrum of anticancer action. The coordination complexes of the 15 lanthanides or rare earth elements in the periodic table are crucial for diagnosing and treating cancer. Understanding and treating cancer requires the detection of binding lanthanide (III) ions or complexes to DNA and breaking DNA by these complexes. Current advances in lanthanide-based coordination complexes as anticancer treatments over the past five years are discussed in this study.

Modular Engineering of Aptamer-Based Nanobiotechnology for Conditional Control of ATP Sensing

Dynamic changes of intracellular, extracellular, and subcellular adenosine triphosphates (ATPs) have fundamental interdependence with the physio-pathological states of cells. Spatially selective in situ imaging of such ATP dynamics offers valuable mechanistic insights into the related biological activities. Despite significant advances in the design of aptamer sensors for ATP detection, the dearth of methods that enable precise ATP imaging in specific cellular locations remains a challenge in this field. This review focuses on the modular engineering of regulatable sensing technology via the integration of aptamer probe designs with advanced functional nanomaterials, allowing conditional control of ATP sensing and imaging with high spatial precision from subcellular organelles to living animals. Highlighting the recent advances in the design of photo-triggered nanosensors for spatiotemporally controlled ATP imaging, endogenously-triggered ATP sensing in a cell-selective manner, and spatially-controlled nanodevices for ATP imaging in specific organelles and extracellular microenvironments. Emphasis will be put on elucidating the principles of how nanotechnology can be applied to regulate the spatial precision of aptamer-based ATP sensing activities. The authors envision that this perspective provides insights into the engineering of aptamer-based nanobiotechnology for opening new frontiers in precise molecular sensing and other bio-applications.

Focusing of surface plasmon polaritons propagating at the SiO2/Ag interface with 2-level and 4-level Fresnel phase zone pad structures

We propose and demonstrate dielectric Fresnel phase zone pad (FPZP) structures for focusing surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating at the SiO2/Ag interfaces. We exploited up-conversion fluorescence microscopy to characterize the SPP focusing. We first report on the SPP focusing with 2-level FPZP structures that introduced a π-phase shift in the SPP wavefront between adjacent zones. We optimized the SPP focusing by fine-tuning the longitudinal width of the FPZP structure. This led to the enhancement of the peak intensity of the SPP focal spot and the reduction of the focal spot size in both the longitudinal and transverse directions. Such focusing was also demonstrated with different focal lengths. To further improve the SPP focusing, we developed a 4-level FPZP structure, which introduced a π/2-phase shift in the SPP wavefront between adjacent zones. With the optimized 4-level FPZP structure, the SPP focal spot peak intensity is further improved, and the spot size is reduced. To assist the design of the FPZP structures, we carried out theoretical analysis and numerical calculations to determine the SPP wavelengths at various oxide/Ag interfaces. We also carried out finite difference time domain (FDTD) calculations to simulate the SPP focusing with the FPZP structures. The results of the FDTD simulation agree with the experimental results qualitatively.

Production, surface modification, physicochemical properties, biocompatibility, and bioimaging applications of nanodiamonds

Nanodiamonds (ND) are chemically inert and stable owing to their sp3 covalent bonding structure, but their surface sp2 graphitic carbons can be easily homogenized with diverse functional groups via oxidation, reduction, hydrogenation, amination, and halogenation. Further surface conjugation of NDs with hydrophilic ligands can boost their colloidal stability and functionality. In addition, NDs are non-toxic as they are made of carbons. They exhibit stable fluorescence without photobleaching. They also possess paramagnetic and ferromagnetic properties, making them suitable for use as a new type of fluorescence imaging (FI) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) probe. In this review, we focused on recently developed ND production methods, surface homogenization and functionalization methods, biocompatibilities, and biomedical imaging applications as FI and MRI probes. Finally, we discussed future perspectives.

High-Quantum-Yield Ultrasmall Ln2O3 (Ln = Eu, Tb, or Dy) Nanoparticle Colloids in Aqueous Media Obtained via Photosensitization

Fluorescent nanoparticles used in biomedical applications should be stable in their colloidal form in aqueous media and possess a high quantum yield (QY). We report ultrasmall Ln2O3 (Ln = Eu, Tb, or Dy) nanoparticle colloids with high QYs in aqueous media. The nanoparticles are grafted with hydrophilic and biocompatible poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) to ensure colloidal stability and biocompatibility and with organic photosensitizer 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDA) for achieving a high QY. The PAA/PDA-Ln2O3 nanoparticle colloids were nearly monodispersed and ultrasmall (particle diameter: ∼2 nm). They exhibited excellent colloidal stability with no precipitation after synthesis (>1.5 years) in aqueous media, very low cellular toxicity, and very high absolute QYs of 87.6, 73.6, and 2.8% for Ln = Eu, Tb, and Dy, respectively. These QYs are the highest reported so far for lanthanides in aqueous media. Therefore, the results suggest their high potential as sensitive optical or imaging probes in biomedical applications.

Lanthanide-Based Organic Salts: Synthesis, Characterization, and Cytotoxicity Studies

The formulation of magnetic ionic liquids (MILs) or organic salts based on lanthanides as anions has been explored. In this work, a set of choline-family-based salts, and two other, different cation families, were combined with Gadolinium(III) and Terbium(III) anions. Synthetic methodologies were previously optimized, and all organic salts were obtained as solids with melting temperatures higher than 100 °C. The magnetic moments obtained for the Gd(III) salts were, as expected, smaller than those obtained for the Tb(III)-based compounds. The values for Gd(III) and Tb(III) magnetic salts are in the range of 6.55-7.30 MB and 8.22-9.34 MB, respectively. It is important to note a correlation between the magnetic moments obtained for lanthanides, and the structural features of the cation. The cytotoxicity of lanthanide-based salts was also evaluated using 3T3, 293T, Caco2, and HepG2 cells, and it was revealed that most of the prepared compounds are not toxic.

All-Optical Data Processing with Photon-Avalanching Nanocrystalline Photonic Synapse

Data processing and storage in electronic devices are typically performed as a sequence of elementary binary operations. Alternative approaches, such as neuromorphic or reservoir computing, are rapidly gaining interest where data processing is relatively slow, but can be performed in a more comprehensive way or massively in parallel, like in neuronal circuits. Here, time-domain all-optical information processing capabilities of photon-avalanching (PA) nanoparticles at room temperature are discovered. Demonstrated functionality resembles properties found in neuronal synapses, such as: paired-pulse facilitation and short-term internal memory, in situ plasticity, multiple inputs processing, and all-or-nothing threshold response. The PA-memory-like behavior shows capability of machine-learning-algorithm-free feature extraction and further recognition of 2D patterns with simple 2 input artificial neural network. Additionally, high nonlinearity of luminescence intensity in response to photoexcitation mimics and enhances spike-timing-dependent plasticity that is coherent in nature with the way a sound source is localized in animal neuronal circuits. Not only are yet unexplored fundamental properties of photon-avalanche luminescence kinetics studied, but this approach, combined with recent achievements in photonics, light confinement and guiding, promises all-optical data processing, control, adaptive responsivity, and storage on photonic chips.

Intraoperative diagnosis of early lymphatic metastasis using neodymium-based rare-earth NIR-II fluorescence nanoprobe

The high mortality of breast cancer is closely related to lymph node (LN) metastasis. Sentinel LNs (SLNs) are the first station where tumor cells metastasize through the lymphatic system. As such, achieving precise diagnosis of the early metastatic status of SLNs during surgery is of paramount importance for precision therapy of breast cancer. While invasive SLNs biopsy is the gold standard for evaluating the status of SLNs, its use is often time-consuming and may increase the risk of operation. It is still challenging to develop a means for rapid SLN metastasis diagnosis. Herein, NaGdF4:5%Nd@NaLuF4 rare earth nanoparticles (Gd:Nd-RENPs) with near-infrared-II (NIR-II) fluorescence and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) properties were fabricated. With the nanoprobe, metastatic SLNs and lymph vessels (LVs) rapidly brighten and can be observed by the NIR-II imaging system, which is totally different from normal LNs and LVs. The remarkable contrast observed via NIR-II imaging serves to swiftly delineate metastatic SLNs from normal ones, subsequently guiding precise surgical resection of metastatic LNs in just 10 minutes. Furthermore, the consistency between the results obtained via MRI and NIR-II imaging further validates the dependability of this nanoprobe as a diagnostic tool for metastatic SLNs. Additionally, the Gd:Nd-RENPs exhibited good biocompatibility in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we demonstrated the advantages and prospects of NIR-II imaging for intraoperative early SLN metastasis assessment and shed light on the potential of the dual-modal Gd:Nd-RENPs as a nanoprobe.

New Strategy: Molten Salt-Assisted Synthesis to Enhance Lanthanide Upconversion Luminescence

Lanthanide-doped upconversion luminescent materials (LUCMs) have attracted much attention in diverse practical applications because of their superior features. However, the relatively weak luminescence intensity and low efficiency of LUCMs are the bottleneck problems that seriously limit their development. Unfortunately, most of the current major strategies of luminescence enhancement have some inherent shortcomings in their implementation. Here, a new and simple strategy of molten salt-assisted synthesis is proposed to enhance lanthanide upconversion luminescence for the first time. As a proof-of-concept, a series of rare earth oxides with obvious luminescence enhancement are prepared by a one-step method, utilizing molten NaCl as the high-temperature reaction media and rare earth chlorides as the precursors. The enhancement factors at different reaction temperatures are systematically investigated by taking Yb3+ /Er3+ co-doped Y2 O3 as an example, which can be enhanced up to more than six times. In addition, the molten salts are extended to all alkali chlorides, indicating that it is a universal strategy. Finally, the potential application of obtained UCL materials is demonstrated in near-infrared excited upconversion white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) and other monochromatic LEDs.

Application of Nanoparticles in the Diagnosis of Gastrointestinal Diseases: A Complete Future Perspective

The diagnosis of gastrointestinal (GI) diseases currently relies primarily on invasive procedures like digestive endoscopy. However, these procedures can cause discomfort, respiratory issues, and bacterial infections in patients, both during and after the examination. In recent years, nanomedicine has emerged as a promising field, providing significant advancements in diagnostic techniques. Nanoprobes, in particular, offer distinct advantages, such as high specificity and sensitivity in detecting GI diseases. Integration of nanoprobes with advanced imaging techniques, such as nuclear magnetic resonance, optical fluorescence imaging, tomography, and optical correlation tomography, has significantly enhanced the detection capabilities for GI tumors and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This synergy enables early diagnosis and precise staging of GI disorders. Among the nanoparticles investigated for clinical applications, superparamagnetic iron oxide, quantum dots, single carbon nanotubes, and nanocages have emerged as extensively studied and utilized agents. This review aimed to provide insights into the potential applications of nanoparticles in modern imaging techniques, with a specific focus on their role in facilitating early and specific diagnosis of a range of GI disorders, including IBD and colorectal cancer (CRC). Additionally, we discussed the challenges associated with the implementation of nanotechnology-based GI diagnostics and explored future prospects for translation in this promising field.

Bodipy Dimer for Enhancing Triplet-Triplet Annihilation Upconversion Performance

Triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) has considerable potential for emerging applications in bioimaging, optogenetics, photoredox catalysis, solar energy harvesting, etc. Fluoroboron dipyrrole (Bodipy) dyes are an essential type of annihilator in TTA-UC. However, conventional Bodipy dyes generally have large molar extinction coefficients and small Stokes shifts (<20 nm), subjecting them to severe internal filtration effects at high concentrations, and resulting in low upconversion quantum efficiency of TTA-UC systems using Bodipy dyes as annihilators. In this study, a Bodipy dimer (B-2) with large Stokes shifts was synthesized using the strategy of dimerization of an already reported Bodipy annihilator (B-1). Photophysical characterization and theoretical chemical analysis showed that both B-1 and B-2 can couple with the red light-activated photosensitizer PdTPBP to fulfill TTA-UC; however, the higher fluorescence quantum yield of B-2 resulted in a higher upconversion efficiency (η_UC) for PdTPBP/B-2 (10.7%) than for PdTPBP/B-1 (4.0%). This study proposes a new strategy to expand Bodipy Stokes shifts and improve TTA-UC performance, which can facilitate the application of TTA-UC in photonics and biophotonics.

Energy Partitioning in Multicomponent Nanoscintillators for Enhanced Localized Radiotherapy

Multicomponent nanomaterials consisting of dense scintillating particles functionalized by or embedding optically active conjugated photosensitizers (PSs) for cytotoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) have been proposed in the last decade as coadjuvant agents for radiotherapy of cancer. They have been designed to make scintillation-activated sensitizers for ROS production in an aqueous environment under exposure to ionizing radiations. However, a detailed understanding of the global energy partitioning process occurring during the scintillation is still missing, in particular regarding the role of the non-radiative energy transfer between the nanoscintillator and the conjugated moieties which is usually considered crucial for the activation of PSs and therefore pivotal to enhance the therapeutic effect. We investigate this mechanism in a series of PS-functionalized scintillating nanotubes where the non-radiative energy transfer yield has been tuned by control of the intermolecular distance between the nanotube and the conjugated system. The obtained results indicate that non-radiative energy transfer has a negligible effect on the ROS sensitization efficiency, thus opening the way to the development of different architectures for breakthrough radiotherapy coadjutants to be tested in clinics.

Iron-Doped Metal-Zinc-Centered Organic Framework Mesoporous Carbon Derivatives for Single-Wavelength NIR-Activated Photothermal/Photodynamic Synergistic Therapy

Recently, single-wavelength synergetic photothermal/photodynamic (PTT/PDT) therapy is beginning to make its mark in cancer treatment, and the key to it is a photosensitizer. In this work, an iron-doped metal-zinc-centered organic framework mesoporous carbon derivative (denoted as Fe_x-Zn-NC_T) with a similar porphyrin property was successfully synthesized by a mild, simple, and green aqueous reaction. The effects of different Fe contents and pyrolysis temperatures on the morphology, structure, and PTT/PDT of Fe_x-Zn-NC_T were investigated. Most importantly, we found that Fe₅₀-Zn-NC₉₀₀ exhibited excellent PTT/PDT performance under single-wavelength near-infrared (808 nm) light irradiation in a hydrophilic environment. The photothermal conversion efficiency (η) was counted as ∼81.3%, and the singlet oxygen (¹O₂) quantum yield (Φ) was compared with indocyanine green (ICG) as ∼0.0041. Furthermore, Fe₅₀-Zn-NC₉₀₀ is provided with a clear ability for generating ¹O₂ in living tumor cells and inducted massive necrosis/apoptosis of tumor cells with single-wavelength near-infrared laser irradiation. All of these are clear to consider that Fe₅₀-Zn-NC₉₀₀ displays great potential as an excellent photosensitizer for single-wavelength dual-mode PTT/PDT therapy.

Bidirectional near-infrared regulation of motor behavior using orthogonal emissive upconversion nanoparticles

Bidirectional optogenetic manipulation enables specific neural function dissection and animal behaviour regulation with high spatial-temporal resolution. It relies on the respective activation of two or more visible-light responsive optogenetic sensors, which inevitably induce signal crosstalk due to their spectral overlap, low photoactivation efficiency and potentially high biotoxicity. Herein, a strategy that combines dual-NIR-excited orthogonal emissive upconversion nanoparticles (OUCNPs) with a single dual-colour sensor, BiPOLES, is demonstrated to achieve bidirectional, crosstalk-free NIR manipulation of motor behaviour in vivo. Core@shell-structured OUCNPs with Tm³⁺ and Er³⁺ dopants in isolated layers exhibit orthogonal blue and red emissions in response to excitation at 808 and 980 nm, respectively. The OUCNPs subsequently activate BiPOLES-expressing excitatory cholinergic motor neurons in C. elegans, leading to significant inhibition and excitation of motor neurons and body bends, respectively. Importantly, these OUCNPs exhibit negligible toxicity toward neural development, motor function and reproduction. Such an OUCNP-BiPOLES system not only greatly facilitates independent, bidirectional NIR activation of a specific neuronal population and functional dissection, but also greatly simplifies the bidirectional NIR optogenetics toolset, thus endowing it with great potential for flexible upconversion optogenetic manipulation.

Silica-Encapsulated Perovskite Nanocrystals for X-ray-Activated Singlet Oxygen Production and Radiotherapy Application

Multicomponent systems consisting of lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (CsPbX₃-NCs, X = Br, I) grown inside mesoporous silica nanospheres (NSs) with selectively sealed pores combine intense scintillation and strong interaction with ionizing radiation of CsPbX₃ NCs with the chemical robustness in aqueous environment of silica particles, offering potentially promising candidates for enhanced radiotherapy and radio-imaging strategies. We demonstrate that CsPbX₃ NCs boost the generation of singlet oxygen species (¹O₂) in water under X-ray irradiation and that the encapsulation into sealed SiO₂ NSs guarantees perfect preservation of the inner NCs after prolonged storage in harsh conditions. We find that the ¹O₂ production is triggered by the electromagnetic shower released by the CsPbX₃ NCs with a striking correlation with the halide composition (I₃ > I_3-x Br _x > Br₃). This opens the possibility of designing multifunctional radio-sensitizers able to reduce the local delivered dose and the undesired collateral effects in the surrounding healthy tissues by improving a localized cytotoxic effect of therapeutic treatments and concomitantly enabling optical diagnostics by radio imaging.

Frequency-Domain Method for Characterization of Upconversion Luminescence Kinetics

The frequency-domain (FD) method provides an alternative to the commonly used time-domain (TD) approach in characterizing the luminescence kinetics of luminophores, with its own strengths, e.g., the capability to decouple multiple lifetime components with higher reliability and accuracy. While extensively explored for characterizing luminophores with down-shifted emission, this method has not been investigated for studying nonlinear luminescent materials such as lanthanide-doped upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs), featuring more complicated kinetics. In this work, employing a simplified rate-equation model representing a standard two-photon energy-transfer upconversion process, we thoroughly analyzed the response of the luminescence of UCNPs in the FD method. We found that the FD method can potentially obtain from a single experiment the effective decay rates of three critical energy states of the sensitizer/activator ions involved in the upconversion process. The validity of the FD method is demonstrated by experimental data, agreeing reasonably well with the results obtained by TD methods.

Thermally activated upconversion luminescence and ratiometric temperature sensing under 1064 nm/808 nm excitation

In this research, a thermally activated upconversion luminescence (UCL) probe with ratiometric temperature sensing under 1064 nm and 808 nm excitation was designed. Especially, Nd³⁺, Tm³⁺and Ce³⁺were doped in rare earth nanoparticles (RENPs) as UCL modulators. By optimizing the elements and ratios, the excitation wavelength is successfully modulated to 1064 nm excitation with UCL intensity enhanced. Additionally, the prepared RENPs have a significant temperature response at 1064 nm excitation and can be used for thermochromic coatings. The intensity ratio of three-photon UCL (1064 nm excitation) to two-photon UCL (808 nm excitation) as an exponential function of temperature can be used as a ratiometric temperature detector. Therefore, this designed thermochromic coatings may enable new applications in optoelectronic device and industrial sensor.

Sequential Therapy for Bone Regeneration by Cerium Oxide-Reinforced 3D-Printed Bioactive Glass Scaffolds

Rational design of multifunctional biomaterials with customized architecture and on demand bioactivity is of great significance for bone tissue engineering (BTE) in modern society. Herein, a versatile therapeutic platform has been established by integrating cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO₂ NPs) into bioactive glass (BG) to fabricate three-dimensional (3D)-printed scaffolds, achieving a sequential therapeutic effect against inflammation and promoting osteogenesis toward bone defect. The antioxidative activity of CeO₂ NPs plays a crucial role in alleviating the oxidative stress upon formation of bone defects. Subsequently, CeO₂ NPs exert a promotion effect on the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of rat osteoblasts through enhancing mineral deposition and alkaline phosphatase and osteogenic gene expression. Strikingly, the incorporation of CeO₂ NPs bestows on the BG scaffolds greatly reinforced mechanical properties, improved biocompatibility, adequate cell adhesion, elevated osteogenic capability, and multifunctional performance in a single platform. In vivo studies on the treatment of rat tibial defect confirmed the better osteogenic properties of CeO₂-BG scaffolds compared with pure BG scaffolds. Additionally, the employment of the 3D printing technique creates a proper porous microenvironment around the bone defect, which further facilitates the cell in-growth and new bone formation. This report provides a systematic study on CeO₂-BG 3D-printed scaffolds prepared by simple ball milling method, achieving sequential and integral treatment in BTE based on a single platform.

NIR-II Luminescent and Multi-Responsive Rare Earth Nanocrystals for Improved Chemodynamic Therapy

Chemodynamic therapy (CDT) based on the Fe²⁺-mediated Fenton reaction can amplify intracellular oxidative stress by producing toxic •OH. However, the high-dose need for Fe²⁺ delivery in tumors and its significant cytotoxicity to normal tissues set a challenge. Therefore, a controllable delivery to activate the Fenton reaction and enhance Fe²⁺ tumor accumulation has become an approach to solve this conflict. Herein, we report a rare-earth-nanocrystal (RENC)-based Fe²⁺ delivery system using light-control techniques and DNA nanotechnology to realize programmable Fe²⁺ delivery. Ferrocenes, the source of Fe²⁺, are modified on the surface of RENCs through pH-responsive DNAs, which are further shielded by a PEG layer to elongate blood circulation and "turn off" the cytotoxicity of ferrocene. The up-/down-conversion dual-mode emissions of RENCs endow the delivery system with both capabilities of diagnosis and delivery control. The down-conversion NIR-II fluorescence can locate tumors. Consequently, up-conversion UV light spatiotemporally activates the catalytic activity of Fe²⁺ by shedding off the protective PEG layer. The exposed ferrocene-DNAs not only can "turn on" Fenton catalytic activity but also respond to tumor acidity, driving cross-linking and enhanced Fe²⁺ enrichment in tumors by 4.5-fold. Accordingly, this novel design concept will be inspiring for developing CDT nanomedicines in the future.

Synthesis of Hierarchical Layered Quasi-Triangular Ce(OH)CO3 and Its Thermal Conversion to Ceria with High Polishing Performance

Layered quasi-triangular Ce(OH)CO₃ assembled from primary nanoparticles was synthesized via a solvothermal method and converted into CeO₂ abrasive particles by calcination at 800-1000 °C. With the increase of calcination temperature, the primary particle size increased and the microstructure, mechanical hardness, and chemical activity of the CeO₂ particles changed, thus affecting the polishing performance. The calcined products obtained at 800, 850, and 900 °C maintained the layered edge structure of the Ce(OH)CO₃ precursor and had a relatively high specific surface area and surface Ce³⁺ concentration. The samples calcined at 950 and 1000 °C lost the layered structure due to the large-scale melting of the primary particles, and their surface chemical activity decreased. The polishing experiments on K9 glass showed that, with the calcination temperature rising from 800 to 1000 °C, the material removal rate (MRR) first increased and then decreased sharply. The initial increase of MRR was attributed to the increase of mechanical hardness of the layered quasi-triangular CeO₂, and the subsequent decrease of MRR was related to the decrease in surface chemical activity and disappearance of the layered edge structure. The product calcined at 900 °C had the highest MRR and best surface quality after polishing due to the layered edge structure and optimal match of chemical activity and mechanical hardness.

Effect of Gd3+, La3+, Lu3+ Co-Doping on the Morphology and Luminescent Properties of NaYF4:Sm3+ Phosphors

The series of luminescent NaYF₄:Sm³⁺ nano- and microcrystalline materials co-doped by La³⁺, Gd³⁺, and Lu³⁺ ions were synthesized by hydrothermal method using rare earth chlorides as the precursors and citric acid as a stabilizing agent. The phase composition of synthesized compounds was studied by PXRD. All synthesized materials except ones with high La³⁺ content (where LaF₃ is formed) have a β-NaYF₄ crystalline phase. SEM images demonstrate that all particles have shape of hexagonal prisms. The type and content of doping REE significantly effect on the particle size. Upon 400 nm excitation, phosphors exhibit distinct emission peaks in visible part of the spectrum attributed to ⁴G_5/2→⁶H_J transitions (J = 5/2-11/2) of Sm³⁺ ion. Increasing the samarium (III) content results in concentration quenching by dipole-dipole interactions, the optimum Sm³⁺concentration is found to be of 2%. Co-doping by non-luminescent La³⁺, Gd³⁺ and Lu³⁺ ions leads to an increase in emission intensity. This effect was explained from the Sm³⁺ local symmetry point of view.

Emerging ultrasmall luminescent nanoprobes for in vivo bioimaging

Photoluminescence (PL) imaging has become a fundamental tool in disease diagnosis, therapeutic evaluation, and surgical navigation applications. However, it remains a big challenge to engineer nanoprobes for high-efficiency in vivo imaging and clinical translation. Recent years have witnessed increasing research efforts devoted into engineering sub-10 nm ultrasmall nanoprobes for in vivo PL imaging, which offer the advantages of efficient body clearance, desired clinical translation potential, and high imaging signal-to-noise ratio. In this review, we present a comprehensive summary and contrastive discussion of emerging ultrasmall luminescent nanoprobes towards in vivo PL bioimaging of diseases. We first summarize size-dependent nano-bio interactions and imaging features, illustrating the unique attributes and advantages/disadvantages of ultrasmall nanoprobes differentiating them from molecular and large-sized probes. We also discuss general design methodologies and PL properties of emerging ultrasmall luminescent nanoprobes, which are established based on quantum dots, metal nanoclusters, lanthanide-doped nanoparticles, and silicon nanoparticles. Then, recent advances of ultrasmall luminescent nanoprobes are highlighted by surveying their latest in vivo PL imaging applications. Finally, we discuss existing challenges in this exciting field and propose some strategies to improve in vivo PL bioimaging and further propel their clinical applications.

Radiopaque Nanorobots as Magnetically Navigable Contrast Agents for Localized In Vivo Imaging of the Gastrointestinal Tract

Magnetic nanorobots offer wireless navigation capability in hard-to-reach areas of the human body for targeted therapy and diagnosis. Though in vivo imaging is required for guidance of the magnetic nanorobots toward the target areas, most of the imaging techniques are inadequate to reveal the potential locomotion routes. This work proposes the use of radiopaque magnetic nanorobots along with microcomputed tomography (microCT) for localized in vivo imaging applications. The nanorobots consist of a contrast agent, barium sulfate (BaSO₄ ), magnetized by the decoration of magnetite (Fe₃ O₄ ) particles. The magnetic features lead to actuation under rotating magnetic fields and enable precise navigation in a microfluidic channel used to simulate confined spaces of the body. In this channel, the intrinsic radiopacity of the nanorobots also provides the possibility to reveal the internal structures by X-ray contrast. Furthermore, in vitro analysis indicates nontoxicity of the nanorobots. In vivo experiments demonstrate localization of the nanorobots in a specific part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract upon the influence of the magnetic field, indicating the efficient control even in the presence of natural peristaltic movements. The nanorobots reported here highlight that smart nanorobotic contrast agents can improve the current imaging-based diagnosis techniques by providing untethered controllability in vivo.

Surface Engineering of Lanthanide Nanoparticles for Oncotherapy

Surface-modified lanthanide nanoparticles have been widely developed as an emerging class of therapeutics for cancer treatment because they exhibit several unique properties. First, lanthanide nanoparticles exhibit a variety of diagnostic capabilities suitable for various image-guided therapies. Second, a large number of therapeutic molecules can be accommodated on the surface of lanthanide nanoparticles, which can simultaneously achieve combined cancer therapy. Third, multivalent targeting ligands on lanthanide nanoparticles can be easily modified to achieve high affinity and specificity for target cells. Last but not least, lanthanide nanoparticles can be engineered for spatially and temporally controlled tumor therapy, which is critical for developing precise and personalized tumor therapy. Surface-modified lanthanide-doped nanoparticles are widely used in cancer phototherapy. This is due to their unique optical properties, including large anti-Stokes shifts, long-lasting luminescence, high photostability, and the capacity for near-infrared or X-ray excitation. Upon near-infrared irradiation, these nanoparticles can emit ultraviolet to visible light, which activates photosensitizers and photothermal agents to destroy tumor cells. Surface modification with special ligands that respond to tumor microenvironment changes, such as acidic pH, hypoxia, or redox reactions, can turn lanthanide nanoparticles into a smart nanoplatform for light-guided tumor chemotherapy and gene therapy. Surface-engineered lanthanide nanoparticles can include antigens that elicit tumor-specific immune responses, as well as immune activators that boost immunity, allowing distant and metastatic tumors to be eradicated. The design of ligands and surface chemistry is crucial for improving cancer therapy without causing side effects. In this Account, we classify surface-modified lanthanide nanoparticles for tumor therapy into four main domains: phototherapy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and biotherapy. We begin by introducing fundamental bioapplications and then discuss recent developments in tumor phototherapy (photodynamic therapy and photothermal therapy), radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and biotherapy (gene therapy and immunotherapy). We also assess the viability of a variety of strategies for eliminating tumor cells through innovative pathways. Finally, future opportunities and challenges for the development of more efficient lanthanide nanoprobes are discussed.

Up-conversion emission in transition metal and lanthanide co-doped systems: dimer sensitization revisited

Lanthanide (Ln) co-doped transition metal (TM) upconversion (UC) co-doped systems are being intensively investigated for their exciting applications in photonics, bioimaging, and luminescence thermometry. The presence of TM, such as Mo6 + /W6 +, Mn2 +, or Fe3 + determines significant changes in Ln UC emission, such as intensity enhancement, colour modulation, and even the alteration of the photon order. The current mechanism assumes a ground-state absorption/excited-state absorption (ESA/GSA) in TM-Yb dimer followed by direct energy transfer to Er/Tm excited states. We revisit this mechanism by addressing two issues that remain ignored: a dynamical approach to the investigation of the upconversion mechanism and the intrinsic chemical complexity of co-doped TM, Ln systems. To this aim, we employ a pulsed, excitation variable laser across a complete set of UC measurements, such as the emission and excitation spectra and emission decays and analyze multiple grains with transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In the Mo co-doped garnet, the results sustain the co-existence of Mo-free garnet and Mo oxide impurity. In this Mo oxide, the Er upconversion emission properties are fully explained by a relatively efficient sequential Yb to Er upconversion process, with no contribution from Yb-Mo dimer sensitization.
