Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common severe liver disease globally, progressing further into nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Vasaguduchyadi Kwatha (VK) is an Ayurvedic formulation traditionally used to treat liver diseases and other metabolic complications. This study is an ethnopharmacological approach to unravel this indigenous remedy. AIM OF THE STUDY We aimed to discover the probable mechanism of action of VK against NASH in this study, using network pharmacology, molecular docking, in vitro study, and preclinical investigation. METHODS AND RESULTS Among the 55 components identified, 10 were confirmed based on mass, elution charecteristics, MS/MS analysis data, and fragmentation rules. Computational study indicated 92 targets involved in the central pathways of NASH, out of which only 15 targets and 9 VK constituents have significant docking scores. In vitro and in vivo analysis results showed that VK significantly reduces weight gain and improves insulin sensitivity, dyslipidemia, steatohepatitis and overall histological features of NASH compared to saroglitazar (SGZR). CONCLUSION Our detailed study yielded three signalling pathways related to NASH on which VK has maximum effect, bringing up a probable alternative treatment for NASH.

Abstract
PURPOSE The mainstay of treatment for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is weight loss. Endoscopic gastric remodeling (EGR) and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1RA) are effective weight loss therapies. This study aims to assess the effect of combining EGR with GLP-1RA on liver-related outcomes and weight profile. MATERIALS AND METHODS This is a retrospective study of a prospectively collected registry of patients with MASLD and compensated advanced chronic liver disease (cACLD) who underwent EGR. Patients were categorized as (1) monotherapy: EGR alone and (2) combination therapy: GLP-1RA prescribed within 6 months prior to or after EGR. Outcomes included changes in noninvasive tests of hepatic fibrosis, weight profile, and insulin resistance status at 12 months. RESULTS Thirty patients (body mass index 40.7 ± 9.3 kg/m2) were included. Of these, 12 patients (40%) underwent EGR monotherapy, and 18 patients (60%) underwent EGR + GLP-1RA combination therapy. Combination therapy group experienced greater improvements in fibrosis compared to monotherapy group (alanine aminotransferase: reduction by 55 ± 23% vs 29 ± 22% (p = 0.008), NAFLD fibrosis score: reduction by 181 ± 182% vs 30 ± 83% (p = 0.04), liver stiffness measurement on transient elastography: reduction by 54 ± 12% vs 14 ± 45% (p = 0.05)). There were greater reductions in hemoglobin A1c and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance in combination therapy compared to monotherapy (p < 0.05). At 12 months, the combination therapy group experienced 18.2 ± 6.6% TWL, while monotherapy group experienced 9.6 ± 3.3% TWL (p = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS In patients with MASLD and cACLD, combination of EGR with GLP-1RA is associated with greater improvements in hepatic fibrosis, weight profile, and insulin resistance compared to EGR alone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Steatotic liver disease (SLD), characterized by elevated liver fat content (LFC), is influenced by genetics and diet. However, whether diet has differential effect based on genetic risk is not well-characterized. We aimed to determine how genetic factors interact with diet to affect SLD in a large national biobank. METHODS We included UK Biobank participants with dietary intake measured by 24-hour recall and genotyping. The primary predictors were dietary pattern, PNPLA3-rs738409-G, TM6SF2-rs58542926-T, a 16-variant hepatic steatosis polygenic risk score (PRS), and gene-environment interactions. The primary outcome was LFC, and secondary outcomes were iron-controlled T1 time (cT1, a measure of liver inflammation and fibrosis) and liver-related events/mortality. RESULTS 21,619 participants met inclusion criteria. In non-interaction models, Mediterranean diet and intake of fruit/vegetables/legumes and fish associated with lower LFC, while higher red/processed meat intake and all genetic predictors associated with higher LFC. In interaction models, all genetic predictors interacted with Mediterranean diet and fruit/vegetable/legume intake; the steatosis PRS interacted with fish intake; and TM6SF2 genotype interacted with red/processed meat intake, to affect LFC. Dietary effects on LFC were up to 3.8 times as high in PNPLA3-rs738409-GG vs. -CC individuals, and 1.4-3.0 times as high in the top vs. bottom quartile of the steatosis PRS. Gene-diet interactions were stronger in participants with vs. without overweight. The steatosis PRS interacted with Mediterranean diet and fruit/vegetable/legume intake to affect cT1 and most dietary and genetic predictors associated with risk of liver-related events or mortality by age 70. CONCLUSIONS Effects of diet on LFC and cT1 were markedly accentuated in patients at increased genetic risk for SLD, implying dietary interventions may be more impactful in these populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The natural progression of hepatic decompensation in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is not well-characterised. We aimed to describe it by conducting a retrospective analysis. METHODS This longitudinal, retrospective analysis of well-characterised MASLD cohorts followed for hepatic decompensation and death. The sequence of liver-related events was evaluated, and the median time between hepatic decompensation episodes and death versus. transplantation was measured. RESULTS Of the 2016 patients identified, 220 (11%) developed at least one episode of hepatic decompensation during a median follow-up of 3.2 years. Ascites was the most common first liver-related event [153 (69.5%)], followed by hepatic encephalopathy (HE) [55 (25%)] and variceal haemorrhage (VH) [30 (13.6%)]. Eighteen out of the 220 (8.1%) patients had more than one liver-related event as their first hepatic decompensation. Among the patients who had the first episode, 87 (39.5%) had a second episode [44 (50.5%) HE, 31 (35.6%) ascites, and 12 (13.7%) VH]. Eighteen out of 220 (8.1%) had a third episode [10 (55.5%) HE, 6 (33.3%) VH, and 2 (11.1%) ascites]. Seventy-three out of 220 (33.1%) died, and 31 (14%) received liver transplantation. The median time from the first episode to the second was 0.7 years and 1.3 years from the second episode to the third. The median survival time from the first episode to death or transplantation was 2.0 years. CONCLUSION The most common first liver-related event in MASLD patients is ascites. The median survival from the first hepatic decompensation to either death or transplantation is 2 years.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is a relatively new term with limited studies done in South Asian population. AIM To determine prevalence and clinico-epidemiological characteristics of MAFLD in general population. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted in randomly selected regions across Delhi, India. Data were collected on socio-demographic particulars, health status and lifestyle factors. Anthropometric measurements, transient elastography, and laboratory investigations were carried out. RESULTS Altogether 6146 participants (mean age: 43.1 ± 13.9 years, 48.1% males) were included. The prevalence of MAFLD was 56.4% (n = 3468), of which lean MAFLD constituted 11.3%. Higher age (OR: 2.47; 95% CI: 2.21-2.76), low education level (OR: 1.23; 95% CI: 1.09-1.39), upper socio-economic class (OR: 1.32; 95% CI: 1.17-1.49), and low physical activity (OR: 1.15; 95% CI: 1.03-1.28) were more common in MAFLD. The association of female sex with MAFLD differed in age groups <40 years (OR: 0.64 and 95% CI: 0.55-0.75) and >40 years (OR: 1.40 and 95% CI: 1.22-1.62) in both magnitude and direction (p < 0.001). Liver fibrosis was present in 23% of the study population (32.2% among MAFLD group). Advanced liver fibrosis was three times more common in MAFLD group (6.2% vs 1.8%, p < 0.001). Obesity and fibrosis had a statistically significant relationship and 75.8% of the individuals with advanced stages of fibrosis had obesity. CONCLUSION Nearly half of study population was found to have MAFLD. Advanced hepatic fibrosis was three times more common in these subjects. Aggressive public health measures are urgently required to raise awareness and introduce interventional strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with a multitude of adverse outcomes. We aimed to estimate the pooled incidence of NAFLD-related adverse events. METHODS We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies of adults with NAFLD to evaluate the pooled incidence of adverse events. RESULTS 19,406 articles were screened, 409 full-text articles reviewed, and 79 eligible studies (1,377,466 persons) were included. Mean age was 51.47 years and body mass index 28.90 kg/m2. Baseline comorbidities included metabolic syndrome (41.73%), cardiovascular disease (CVD) (16.83%), cirrhosis (21.97%), and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) (58.85%). Incidence rate per 1,000 person-years for mortality included: all-cause (14.6), CVD-related (4.53), non-liver cancer-related (4.53), and liver-related (3.10). Incidence for liver-related events included overall (24.3), fibrosis progression (49.0), cirrhosis (10.9), liver transplant (12.0), and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (3.39). Incidence for non-liver events included metabolic syndrome (25.4), hypertension (25.8), dyslipidemia (26.4), diabetes (19.0), CVD (24.77), renal impairment (30.3), depression/anxiety (29.1), and non-liver cancer (10.5). Biopsy-proven NASH had higher incidence of HCC (P=0.043) compared to non-NASH. Higher rates of CVD and mortality were observed in North America and Europe, hypertension and non-liver cancer in North America, and HCC in Western Pacific/Southeast Asia (P<0.05). No significant differences were observed by sex. Time-period analyses showed decreasing rates of cardiovascular and non-liver cancer mortality and increasing rates of decompensated cirrhosis (P<0.05). CONCLUSION People with NAFLD have high incidence of liver and non-liver adverse clinical events, varying by NASH, geographic region, and time-period, but not sex.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Racial and ethnic disparities exist for hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) survival. AIM To evaluate the impact of HCV treatment on such disparities. METHODS In a retrospective cohort study, we analysed 6069 patients with HCV-related HCC (54.2% Asian, 30.1% White, 8.5% Black, and 7.3% Hispanic) from centres in the United States and Asia. RESULTS The mean age was 61, 60, 59 and 68, respectively, for White, Black, Hispanic and Asian patients. Black patients were most likely to have Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage D, vascular invasion and distant metastasis (23% vs. 5%-15%, 20% vs. 10%-17% and 10% vs. 5%-7%, respectively; all p < 0.0001). Treatment rate with direct-acting antiviral agents (DAA) was 35.9% for Asian, 34.9% for White, 30.3% for Hispanic (30.3%), and 18.7% for Black patients (p < 0.0001). Among those untreated or without sustained virologic response (SVR), 10-year survival rates were 35.4, 27.5, 19.3 and 14.0, respectively, for Asian, Hispanic, White and Black patients (p < 0.0001). There were no statistically significant differences among those with SVR (p = 0.44). On multivariable analysis adjusted for relevant confounders, there was no statistically significant association between survival and being Hispanic (aHR: 0.68, p = 0.26) or Black (aHR: 1.18, p = 0.60) versus White. There was a significant association between being Asian American and survival (aHR: 0.24, p = 0.001; non-U.S. Asian: aHR: 0.66, p = 0.05), and for SVR (aHR: 0.30, p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION DAA treatment rates were suboptimal. Racial and ethnic disparities resolved with HCV cure. Early diagnosis and improved access to HCV treatment is needed for all patients with HCV infection.

Abstract
Psoriasis is a chronic, immune-mediated, inflammatory disease that has a major impact on patients' quality of life. Common psoriasis-associated comorbidities include cardiovascular diseases, psoriatic arthritis, inflammatory bowel syndromes, type-2 diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is affecting a substantial portion of the population and is closely linked with psoriasis. The interplay involves low-grade chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and genetic factors. The review presents the pathophysiological connections between psoriasis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, emphasizing the role of cytokines, adipokines, and inflammatory cascades. The "hepato-dermal axis" is introduced, highlighting how psoriatic inflammation potentiates hepatic inflammation and vice versa. According to the new guidelines, the preliminary examination for individuals with psoriasis should encompass evaluations of transaminase levels and ultrasound scans as part of the initial assessment for this cohort. Considering the interplay, recent guidelines recommend screening for NAFLD in moderate-to-severe psoriasis cases. Treatment implications arise, particularly with medications impacting liver function. Understanding the intricate relationship between psoriasis and NAFLD provides valuable insights into shared pathogenetic mechanisms. This knowledge has significant clinical implications, guiding screening practices, treatment decisions, and the development of future therapeutic approaches for these chronic conditions.

Abstract
Introduction: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is believed to be the most common chronic liver disease worldwide. Therapies are under development for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), the progressive form of NAFLD, such that the prevalence of NASH with liver fibrosis, which is likely to require treatment, may be of interest to healthcare decision makers. Noninvasive tests are used in initial screening for NASH, as well as in observational studies of NASH prevalence. However, existing evidence does not address how estimated prevalence varies with different noninvasive tests. This analysis estimated the prevalence of NASH among US adults and assessed variation with different noninvasive tests. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using the 2017-March 2020 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cycle. Participants with presumed NAFLD (steatosis and without alternative causes of liver disease) were identified, among whom NASH was predicted based on FAST score, Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4), and AST-to-Platelet Ratio Index (APRI) cutoffs across 11 scenarios. Among NASH participants, fibrosis stages were explored based on distribution across the spectrum of liver-stiffness measurements. Results: Among participants with complete data for the analysis (N=6969), prevalence of presumed NAFLD was 25.6%. Within presumed NAFLD, prediction of NASH using imaging-based NIT cutoffs yielded estimated prevalence of 1.3%-4.8% (3.3 million-12.2 million) based on FAST score cutoffs from 0.35-0.67. Using biomarker-based NIT cutoffs yielded estimated prevalence of 0.4%-12.3% (1.0 million-14.5 million) based on FIB-4 cutoffs from 0.90-2.67, and 0.1%-1.9% (0.2-5.0 million) based on APRI cutoffs from 0.50-1.50. Conclusion: Prevalence of NASH among US adults was estimated to range from 1.3% to 4.8% when predicted using imaging-based noninvasive test values for participants with presumed NAFLD, generally aligning with estimates in the literature of prevalence of biopsy-confirmed NASH. Use of biomarker-based noninvasive test values for prediction of NASH yielded a wider range of estimates with FIB-4, and a considerably lower range of estimates with APRI.

Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become an urgent public health issue with high global prevalence, but data on NAFLD are inconsistent. The association of total dietary vitamin A intake with the NAFLD risk was not well documented in previous studies. To explore the relationship between dietary vitamin A intake from different sources and NAFLD risk among American adults. Data were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2014. Logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models were used to estimate the relationship between total dietary vitamin A intake and NAFLD risk. 6,613 adult participants were included. After adjusting potential confounders, the odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of NAFLD for the highest quartile intake of total vitamin A, preformed vitamin A, provitamin A carotenoids were respectively 0.86 (0.69-1.06), 0.97 (0.74-1.28), and 0.78 (0.61-0.99), compared to the lowest quartile. Stratifying gender and age, provitamin A carotenoids intake was inversely associated with NAFLD risk in females and participants aged < 45 years. Dose-response analysis indicated a linear negative relationship between provitamin A carotenoids intake and NAFLD risk. Provitamin A carotenoids intake was inversely associated with NAFLD, especially in women and those aged < 45 years among adult American.

Abstract
This study examined the link between fatty liver disease (FLD) and cataracts, as previous research has suggested that FLD may contribute to metabolic syndrome, systemic inflammation, and potentially cataracts. We studied a nationwide cross-sectional cohort of the Fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010-2011. FLD was defined as nonalcoholic FLD (NAFLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated FLD (MAFLD). Multinomial logistic regression was utilized to investigate the relationship between cataracts and FLD after adjustment for potential confounders. Participants with cataracts had higher liver fibrosis scores, including the NAFLD fibrosis score (NFS; P < 0.001), fibrosis-4 index (FIB4; P < 0.001), and fatty liver index (FLI; P = 0.001). NAFLD was not associated with a higher odds ratio (OR) for cataracts in the fully adjusted model (OR = 1.23, P = 0.058). MAFLD was significantly associated with a higher OR (OR = 1.34, P = 0.006). After adjusting for all factors, the severity of FLD was linked to an increased risk of cataracts, with significant linear trends (P values for linear trends of NFS, FIB4, and FLI < 0.05). After adjusting for well-known cataract risk factors, MAFLD was significantly associated with cataracts. Our analysis suggests that FLD may serve as an independent risk factor for cataracts.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES Data on the prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in subgroups of the United States (US) population are limited. This study was conducted to estimate NAFLD prevalence overall and by subgroups, and prevalence of NAFLD with advanced fibrosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS Using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018 data, a cross-sectional study was conducted. NAFLD was defined as having a US Fatty Liver Index (USFLI) ≥ 30 in the absence of other causes of liver disease, including excessive alcohol intake, chronic hepatitis B, and chronic hepatitis C. Likelihood for having advanced fibrosis was determined by the calculated NAFLD fibrosis score (NFS; high ≥ 0.676; low < -1.445) and fibrosis-4 index (FIB-4; high ≥ 2.67; low < 1.30). RESULTS The weighted national prevalence of NAFLD in US adults was 26.7% (95% confidence interval: 25.3%-28.1%). Prevalence was higher among those aged ≥ 65 years, males, Mexican Americans, with BMI ≥ 35 kg/m2 (class 2 and 3 obesity) and with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Of those meeting the USFLI criterion for NAFLD, 18.1% and 3.7% were determined as having a high probability of advanced fibrosis based on NFS ≥ 0.676 and FIB-4 ≥ 2.67 cut-off values, respectively. CONCLUSIONS This study supports an increased prevalence of NAFLD in specific subpopulations (aged ≥ 65 years, males, Mexican Americans, obese population, and patients with T2D). The observed difference in the prevalence of advanced fibrosis as estimated by NFS and FIB-4 highlights the challenge of choosing optimal cut-off values.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Utilization of electronic health records data to derive predictive indexes such as the electronic Child-Turcotte-Pugh (eCTP) Score can have significant utility in health care delivery. Within the records, CT scans contain phenotypic data which have significant prognostic value. However, data extractions have not traditionally been applied to imaging data. In this study, we used artificial intelligence to automate biomarker extraction from CT scans and examined the value of these features in improving risk prediction in patients with liver disease. APPROACH AND RESULTS Using a regional liver disease cohort from the Veterans Health System, we retrieved administrative, laboratory, and clinical data for Veterans who had CT scans performed for any clinical indication between 2008 and 2014. Imaging biomarkers were automatically derived using the analytic morphomics platform. In all, 4614 patients were included. We found that the eCTP Score had a Concordance index of 0.64 for the prediction of overall mortality while the imaging-based model alone or with eCTP Score performed significantly better [Concordance index of 0.72 and 0.73 ( p <0.001)]. For the subset of patients without hepatic decompensation at baseline (n=4452), the Concordance index for predicting future decompensation was 0.67, 0.79, and 0.80 for eCTP Score, imaging alone, or combined, respectively. CONCLUSIONS This proof of concept demonstrates that the potential of utilizing automated extraction of imaging features within CT scans either alone or in conjunction with classic health data can improve risk prediction in patients with chronic liver disease.

Abstract
Chlordane is an organochlorine pesticide (OCP) that is environmentally persistent. Although exposures to OCPs including chlordane have been associated with elevated liver enzymes, current knowledge on OCPs' contribution to toxicant-associated steatotic liver disease (TASLD) and underlying sex-specific metabolic/endocrine disruption are still widely limited. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the sex-dependent effects of chlordane in the context of TASLD. Age-matched male and female C57BL/6 mice were exposed to chlordane (20 mg/kg, one-time oral gavage) for two weeks. Female mice generally exhibited lower bodyfat content but more steatosis and hepatic lipid levels, consistent with increased hepatic mRNA levels of genes involved in lipid synthesis and uptake. Surprisingly, chlordane-exposed females demonstrated lower hepatic cholesterol levels. With regards to metabolic disruption, chlordane exposure decreased expression of genes involved in glycogen and glucose metabolism (Pklr, Gck), while chlordane-exposed females also exhibited decreased gene expression of HNF4A, an important regulator of liver identity and function. In terms of endocrine endpoints, chlordane augmented plasma testosterone levels in males. Furthermore, chlordane activated hepatic xenobiotic receptors, including the constitutive androstane receptor, in a sex-dependent manner. Overall, chlordane exposure led to altered hepatic energy metabolism, and potential chlordane-sex interactions regulated metabolic/endocrine disruption and receptor activation outcomes.

Abstract
The obesity epidemic has pushed fatty liver disease, which consists of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, to the forefront of the 21st century. Disease identification can be done invasively with a liver biopsy or noninvasively through elastography and measurements of biomarkers, such as the alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) liver enzymes. Presently, there are no FDA-approved drugs on the market to treat the disease. Alternative medicinal treatments have been investigated, which include altering the intestinal microbiota and consuming anti-inflammatory, herbal-based, vitamin-based, and plant-based medications, in addition to following a healthy lifestyle. In this study, multiple databases were used to identify articles pertaining to fatty liver disease (FLD). Databases included Biomedical Reference Collection: Comprehensive, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health (CINAHL), Google Scholar, and PubMed. All articles gathered from the databases were peer-reviewed and less than 10 years old to ensure the credibility of the work and recent information regarding the disease. A total of 13 articles were used to gather information for this review. All articles were confirmed to be peer-reviewed by checking them with Ulrich's web. In all 13 peer-reviewed articles, the diagnosis of FLD was most commonly done by analyzing ALT and AST liver enzymes and lipid profiles. Liver ultrasound, liver FibroScan, and liver biopsy served as other tools used for detecting the presence of FLD. It was observed that anti-inflammatory, herbal-based, vitamin-based, and plant-based medications and healthy gut microbiota had beneficial and therapeutic effects in treating FLD when coupled with healthy lifestyle changes. All medicinal treatments were found to lower the ALT and AST liver enzymes, lipid profiles (total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein), and liver steatosis scores in studies where ultrasound was used before and after treatment. Further investigation is needed to fully understand the mechanisms behind the therapeutic effects of treating FLD; however, the medicinal treatments discussed in this review show promising prospects for treating the disease. The therapeutic effects of anti-inflammatory, herbal-based, vitamin-based, and plant-based medications and living a healthy lifestyle were seen in lower levels of liver enzymes, improved lipid profiles, and lower steatosis scores, with no reported side effects on subjects. The treatment options studied may have beneficial impacts in treating FLD patients and may be used in the development of future medications to combat the disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Understanding of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) continues to expand, but the relationship between race and ethnicity and NAFLD outside the use of cross-sectional data is lacking. Using longitudinal data, we investigated the role of race and ethnicity in adverse outcomes in NAFLD patients. METHODS Patients with NAFLD confirmed by imaging via manual chart review from any clinics at Stanford University Medical Center (1995-2021) were included. Primary study outcomes were incidence of liver events and mortality (overall and non-liver related). RESULTS The study included 9,340 NAFLD patients: White (44.1%), Black (2.29%), Hispanic (27.9%), and Asian (25.7%) patients. For liver events, the cumulative 5-year incidence was highest among White (19.1%) patients, lowest among Black (7.9%) patients, and similar among Asian and Hispanic patients (~15%). The 5-year and 10-year cumulative overall mortality was highest for Black patients (9.2% and 15.0%, respectively, vs. 2.5-3.5% and 4.3-7.3% in other groups) as well as for non-liver mortality. On multivariable regression analysis, compared to White patients, only Asian group was associated with lower liver-related outcomes (aHR: 0.83, P=0.027), while Black patients were at more than two times higher risk of both non-liver related (aHR: 2.35, P=0.010) and overall mortality (aHR: 2.13, P=0.022) as well as Hispanic patients (overall mortality: aHR: 1.44, P=0.022). CONCLUSION Compared to White patients, Black patients with NAFLD were at the highest risk for overall and non-liver-related mortality, followed by Hispanic patients with Asian patients at the lowest risk for all adverse outcomes. Culturally sensitive and appropriate programs may be needed for more successful interventions.

Abstract
In recent years, the diagnosis and understanding of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), recently redefined as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), and its relationship with cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are gaining better understanding. As MASLD shares common risk factors with CVD, including obesity, insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, research increasingly identifies it as a potential independent risk factor for CVD. The exact mechanisms linking MASLD to CVD remain complex and multifaceted, involving metabolic, inflammatory, and vascular pathways. Current cardiology guidelines recognize the significant association between MASLD and CVD, advocating its integration into cardiovascular risk assessment and management. Despite the progress, gaps persist in understanding underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms and the representation of diverse populations in epidemiological studies. The review illuminates the clinical implications of the MASLD-CVD link and identifies directions for future research.

Abstract
Background This study investigates the association between aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index (APRI), a noninvasive measure of liver function, and 30-day postoperative complications following total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). Methods The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was queried for all patients who underwent TSA between 2015 and 2021. The study population was divided into 4 groups based on preoperative APRI: normal/reference (APRI ≤ 0.5), mild fibrosis (0.5 < APRI ≤ 0.7), significant fibrosis (0.7 < APRI ≤ 1), and cirrhosis (APRI > 1). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to investigate the connection between preoperative APRI and postoperative complications. Results Compared to the reference group, significant fibrosis was independently associated with a greater likelihood of major complications (odds ratio [OR]: 1.82, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.11-2.99; P = .017), minor complications (OR: 2.70, 95% CI: 1.67-4.37; P < .001), pneumonia (OR: 5.78, 95% CI: 2.58-12.95; P < .001), blood transfusions (OR: 2.89, 95% CI: 1.57-5.32; P < .001), readmission (OR: 1.88, 95% CI: 1.10-3.21; P = .022), and non-home discharge (OR: 1.83, 95% CI: 1.23-2.73; P = .003). Cirrhosis was independently associated with a greater likelihood of minor complications (OR: 3.96, 95% CI: 2.67-5.88; P < .001), blood transfusions (OR: 5.85, 95% CI: 3.79-9.03; P < .001), failure to wean off a ventilator (OR: 9.10, 95% CI: 1.98-41.82; P = .005), and non-home discharge (OR: 2.06, 95% CI: 1.43-2.96; P < .001). Conclusion Increasing preoperative APRI was associated with an increasing rate of postoperative complications following TSA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is one the most prevalent causes of chronic liver disease worldwide. In the absence of an approved drug treatment, lifestyle modification is the first intervention strategy. This study aimed to estimate the main effect of two different physical activity (PA) programs, and a Low-Glycemic-Index Mediterranean Diet (LGIMD), or their combined effect on liver fibrosis parameters in subjects with NAFLD. METHODS Subjects with moderate or severe NAFLD grade of severity (n = 144) were randomly assigned to six intervention arms for three months: LGIMD, PA programs, and their combination. Data were collected at baseline, 45 days, and 90 days. Transient elastography was performed to assess the outcome. RESULTS at 90 days, a statistically significant reduction in kPa was found among subjects following LGMID (-2.85, 95% CI -5.24, -0.45) and those following an LGIMD plus PA1 (-2.37, 95% CI -4.39, -0.35) and LGIMD plus Pa2 (-2.21, 95% CI -4.10, -0.32). The contrast between time 2 and time 1 of the LGIMD plus PA2 treatment showed a statistically significant increase, and vice versa: the contrast between time 3 and time 2 of the same treatment showed a statistically significant reduction. The PA1 and PA2 arms also showed reduced kPa, although the results did not reach statistical significance. CONCLUSIONS The intervention arms, LGIMD, LGIMD+PA1, and LGIMD+PA2, reduced the fibrosis score.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aspartate Aminotransferase-to-Platelet Ratio Index (APRI) is a cost-effective and noninvasive measure of liver function, an alternative to the gold standard liver biopsy which is resource-intensive and invasive. This study investigates the association between various degrees of liver dysfunction based on APRI and 30-day postoperative complications following arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (aRCR). METHODS The American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database was queried for all patients who underwent aRCR between 2015 and 2021. The study population was divided into four groups based on preoperative APRI: normal/reference (APRI ≤ 0.5), mild fibrosis (0.5 < APRI ≤ 0.7), significant fibrosis (0.7 < APRI ≤ 1), and cirrhosis (APRI > 1). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to investigate the connection between preoperative APRI and postoperative complications. RESULTS Compared to normal liver function, mild fibrosis was significantly associated with male gender, lower BMI, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification ≥ 3, and comorbid diabetes, hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and bleeding disorders. Significant fibrosis was significantly associated with male gender, greater BMI, ASA classification ≥ 3, and comorbid diabetes, hypertension, and bleeding disorders. Cirrhosis was significantly associated with younger age, ASA classification ≥ 3, smokers, and comorbid diabetes and bleeding disorders. Compared to normal liver function, fibrosis was not associated with complications, significant fibrosis was associated with myocardial infarction, and cirrhosis was associated with major complications, sepsis, non-home discharge, and mortality. However, mild fibrosis, significant fibrosis, and cirrhosis were independently associated with any adverse 30-day postoperative complications following aRCR. CONCLUSION Among those with predicted liver damage based on preoperative APRI, 30-day postoperative complications following aRCR were not found to be independently associated with preoperative mild fibrosis, significant fibrosis, or cirrhosis. Our results suggest that APRI predictive of liver dysfunction may be a weaker deterrent to undergoing aRCR compared to other orthopedic surgeries.

Abstract
Introduction Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are both chronic multisystem diseases that cause tremendous health burdens worldwide. Previous epidemiological studies have found a bidirectional relationship between these two diseases; however, their causality remains largely unknown. We aim to examine the causal relationship between NAFLD and T2DM. Methods The observational analysis included 2,099 participants from the SPECT-China study and 502,414 participants from the UK Biobank. Logistic regression and Cox regression models were used to examine the bidirectional association between NAFLD and T2DM. Two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were conducted to investigate the causal effects of the two diseases using summary statistics of genome-wide association studies from the UK Biobank for T2DM and the FinnGen study for NAFLD. Results During the follow-up, 129 T2DM cases and 263 NAFLD cases were observed in the SPECT-China study, and 30,274 T2DM cases and 4,896 NAFLD cases occurred in the UK Biobank cohort. Baseline NAFLD was associated with an increased risk of incident T2DM in both studies (SPECT-China: OR: 1.74 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.12-2.70); UK Biobank: HR: 2.16 (95% CI: 1.82-2.56)), while baseline T2DM was associated with incident NAFLD in the UK Biobank study only (HR: 1.58). Bidirectional MR analysis showed that genetically determined NAFLD was significantly associated with an increased risk of T2DM (OR: 1.003 (95% CI: 1.002-1.004, p< 0.001)); however, there was no evidence of an association between genetically determined T2DM and NAFLD (OR: 28.1 (95% CI: 0.7-1,143.0)). Conclusions Our study suggested the causal effect of NAFLD on T2DM development. The lack of a causal association between T2DM and NAFLD warrants further verification.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is prevalent and may affect cognitive function. We studied associations of NAFLD with risk of cognitive impairment. Secondarily we evaluated liver biomarkers (alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), their ratio, and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase). METHODS In a prospective cohort study, the REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke, among 30,239 black and white adults aged ≥45,495 cases of incident cognitive impairment were identified over 3.4 years follow up. Cognitive impairment was identified as new impairment in two of three cognitive tests administered every two years during follow up; word list learning and recall, and verbal fluency. 587 controls were selected from an age, race, sex-stratified sample of the cohort. The fatty liver index was used to define baseline NAFLD. Liver biomarkers were measured using baseline blood samples. RESULTS NAFLD at baseline was associated with a 2.01-fold increased risk of incident cognitive impairment in a minimally adjusted model (95% CI 1.42, 2.85). The association was largest in those aged 45-65 (p interaction by age = 0.03), with the risk 2.95-fold increased (95% CI 1.05, 8.34) adjusting for cardiovascular, stroke and metabolic risk factors. Liver biomarkers were not associated with cognitive impairment, except AST/ALT >2, with an adjusted OR 1.86 (95% CI 0.81, 4.25) that did not differ by age. CONCLUSIONS A laboratory-based estimate of NAFLD was associated with development of cognitive impairment, particularly in mid-life, with a tripling in risk. Given its high prevalence, NAFLD may be a major reversible determinant of cognitive health.

Abstract
(1) Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common liver disease. Aims: We aimed to investigate the frequency of comorbidities and malignancies among NAFLD patients compared to the general population. (2) Methods: A retrospective study included adult patients with a NAFLD diagnosis. A control group was matched for age and gender. Demographics, comorbidities, malignancies, and mortality were collected and compared. (3) Results: 211,955 NAFLD patients were analyzed in comparison to 452,012 matched general population controls. Significantly higher rates of diabetes mellitus (23.2% vs. 13.3%), obesity (58.8% vs. 27.8%), hypertension (57.2% vs. 39.9%), chronic ischemic heart disease (24.7% vs. 17.3%), and CVA (3.2% vs. 2.8%) were found among NAFLD patients. Patients with NAFLD had significantly higher rates of the following malignancies: prostate cancer (1.6% vs. 1.2%), breast cancer (2.6% vs. 1.9%), colorectal cancer (1.8% vs. 1.4%), uterine cancer (0.4 vs. 0.2%), kidney cancer (0.8% vs. 0.5%), but a lower rate of lung cancer (0.9% vs. 1.2%) and stomach cancer (0.3% vs. 0.4%). The all-cause mortality rate among NAFLD patients was significantly lower in comparison to the general population (10.8% vs. 14.7%, p < 0.001). (4) Conclusions: Higher rates of comorbidities and malignancies among NAFLD patients were observed, but a lower rate of all-cause mortality was found.

Abstract
Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), formerly known as nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, is highly associated with the metabolic syndrome. Given its high heterogeneity in patients along with unpredictable clinical outcomes, MAFLD is difficult to diagnose and manage. MAFLD is associated with obesity, diabetes, metabolic derangements, lipid disorders, cardiovascular disorders, sleep apnea, sarcopenia, gut dysbiosis, and sex hormone-related disorders. Identification of risk factors is imperative in understanding disease heterogeneity and clinical presentation to reliably diagnose and manage patients. The complexity of MAFLD pathobiology is discussed in this review in relation to its association with common metabolic and nonmetabolic disorders.

Abstract
Background Despite being the most common liver disease worldwide, the clinical trajectory and inpatient crude mortality rate of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) have not been thoroughly studied. Methods We conducted a single-center retrospective case-control study of patients admitted to a general ICU setting between the years 2015 and 2020. Medical records from patients who met the diagnostic criteria for NAFLD, as well as age- and gender-matched control group, were reviewed. The primary endpoint was crude ICU mortality, defined as death within 30 days of ICU admission. The secondary outcomes included presentation with septic shock and severe sepsis, Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II scores, vasopressor requirements, mechanical ventilation need, and admission-to-ICU transfer time. Results Two hundred fifty subjects were enrolled and were equally divided into the NAFLD and control groups. NAFLD group subjects had higher overall 30-day ICU mortality (63.9% vs 36.1%, P < 0.05), more frequent presentation with septic shock and severe sepsis (55.2% vs 33.6%, P < 0.05), higher Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment scores at presentation (21.3 ± 12.5 vs 16.6 ± 10.5 and 11.36 ± 5.2 vs 8.3 ± 6.2, P < 0.05), higher need for mechanical ventilation (18.4 vs 7.2%, P = 0.05), and vasopressor (15.2% vs 7.2%, P = 0.05) dependency on admission with a shorter admission-to-ICU transfer mean interval (3 vs 6 days, P < 0.05). There were no differences in the need for blood transfusions, steroids, or dialysis between the two groups. Higher fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) and NAFLD fibrosis scores were found to be associated with mortality in ICU-admitted NAFLD patients. Conclusion NAFLD patients are more likely than non-NAFLD admitted ICU patients to present with severe sepsis and septic shock, have a shorter admission-to-ICU transfer time, and have a higher crude ICU mortality rate.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) establishes new criteria for diagnosis of fatty liver disease independent of alcohol intake. We aimed to describe the prevalence and compare characteristics and mortality outcomes of persons with nonobese and obese MAFLD. METHODS Using data from 13,640 participants from the third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) 1988-1994, we identified participants with fatty liver on ultrasound who had MAFLD and analyzed them by the presence of obesity. RESULTS Overall prevalence of MAFLD was 19%; amongst those, 54% were obese and 46% were nonobese. Nonobese MAFLD was more common in participants older than 65 than in younger participants (56.8% vs. 43.2%, p < 0.0001). Nonobese MAFLD was more common in males (63.2% vs. 48.3%, p < 0.0001). Obese MAFLD was more common in females (51.7% vs. 48.3%, p < 0.0001). After adjusting for several demographic factors and alcohol use, older age [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 1.02, 95% CI 1.00-1.02, p = 0.003] and being male (aOR: 1.65, 95% CI 1.25-2.17, p = 0.001) were independent risk factors for nonobese MAFLD. Nonobese MAFLD participants had a higher 20-year cumulative incidence for all-cause mortality compared to obese MAFLD participants (33.2% vs. 28.8%, p = 0.0137). However, nonobese MAFLD was not independently associated with mortality after adjusting for relevant confounders, while FIB-4 > 1.3 and cardiovascular disease were the strongest risk factors associated with increased mortality [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) > 2.7 for both, p < 0.0001 for both]. CONCLUSIONS Nonobese MAFLD constitutes about half of the MAFLD in the United States, especially among males and the elderly. Notably, nonobese MAFLD carries higher mortality than obese MAFLD. Screening and diagnosis of MAFLD should be considered in nonobese populations.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) exposure in adulthood is associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), characterized by steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis. The prevalence of NAFLD in children is increasing, suggesting a role for the developmental environment in programming susceptibility. However, the role of developmental Cd exposure in programming NAFLD and the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We have proposed that imprinted genes are strong candidates for connecting the early life environment and later life disease. In support of this, we previously identified roles for the Imprinted Gene Network (IGN) and its regulator Zac1 in programming NAFLD in response to maternal metabolic dysfunction. Here, we test the hypothesis that developmental Cd exposure is sufficient to program NAFLD, and further, that this process is mediated by Zac1 and the IGN. Using mice, we show that developmental cadmium chloride (CdCl2) exposure leads to histological, biochemical, and molecular signatures of steatosis and fibrosis in juveniles. Transcriptomic analyses comparing livers of CdCl2-exposed and control mice show upregulation of Zac1 and the IGN coincident with disease presentation. Increased hepatic Zac1 expression is independent of promoter methylation and imprinting statuses. Finally, we show that over-expression of Zac1 in cultured hepatocytes is sufficient to induce lipid accumulation in a Pparγ-dependent manner and demonstrate direct binding of Zac1 to the Pparγ promoter. Our findings demonstrate that developmental Cd exposure is sufficient to program NAFLD in later life, and with our previous work, establish Zac1 and the IGN as key regulators of prosteatotic and profibrotic pathways, two of the major pathological hallmarks of NAFLD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects much of the worldwide population and poses a significant burden to the global healthcare. The rising numbers of individuals with NAFLD and instances of mortality point toward the importance of understanding the association causes of mortality in NAFLD. This meta-analysis aimed to seek the associations of NAFLD with all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related, liver-related, and cancer-related mortality. METHODS MEDLINE and Embase were searched for articles relating to causes of mortality between NAFLD and non-NAFLD. The DerSimonian and Laird random-effects model was used to analyze adjusted hazard ratios (HR), and a sensitivity analysis was conducted to reduce heterogeneity through a graphical display of study heterogeneity. RESULTS Fifteen studies involving 10 286 490 patients were included. Individuals with NAFLD exhibited an increased risk of all-cause mortality (HR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.09-1.59; P < .01; I2 = 96.00%), CVD-related mortality (HR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.06-1.41; P < .01; I2 = 81.00%), and cancer-related mortality (HR, 1.67; 95% CI, 1.15-2.41; P < .01; I2 = 95.00%). However, no significant association was found between liver-related mortality and NAFLD (HR, 3.58; 95% CI, 0.69-18.46; P =.13; I2 = 96.00%). The sensitivity analysis conducted with graphic display of heterogeneity and only population-based studies found similar results. CONCLUSION NAFLD was associated with an increased risk of all-cause, CVD-related, and cancer-related mortality but not liver-related mortality. The finding is likely because of low fibrosis prevalence in the community. However, the significant burden in other causes of mortality beyond the liver points to a need for multidisciplinary efforts to reduce the mortality risks.

Abstract
Patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) have a higher risk for NASH and significant fibrosis. Presence of NASH and advanced fibrosis are associated with adverse outcomes in patients with NAFLD. Using a noninvasive method, we determined the prevalence of at-risk NASH and its association with MetS components in a large population-based analysis. We used the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and included adults ≥18 years with NAFLD (controlled attenuation parameter ≥274 dB/m). Pregnancy, subjects with other causes of liver disease or missing data were excluded. FibroScan-AST (FAST) score was calculated using aspartate aminotransferase, liver stiffness measurement, and controlled attenuation parameter. Patients with a FAST score >0.35 were considered to have at-risk NASH, defined as NASH with NAFLD activity score ≥4 and fibrosis stage ≥2 on liver biopsy. The sample included 687 patients. The overall prevalence of at-risk NASH was 11.6% (95% CI: 8.8-15.1) and was higher in males than females (15.8% vs. 6.5%; p < 0.001). Subjects with comorbidities (diabetes mellitus, obesity, MetS, and insulin resistance) had between 1.3 and 1.7 times higher prevalence than the general population. Among MetS components, elevated glucose/diabetes, large waist circumference, and low HDL were independent risk factors for at risk-NASH. The number of MetS components was also important-one additional component increased the odds of at-risk NASH by 2 times. The FAST score had the highest correlation with alanine aminotransferase (r= 0.70; p < 0.001). We estimated ~9 million people in the US have at-risk NASH and may benefit from active surveillance and therapy.

Abstract
Several studies have found that antifibrosis treatment for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can cause a variety of side effects. No network meta-analysis (NMA) analyzes the adverse events of antifibrotic drugs for NAFLD. This NMA aimed to systematically compare the drug-related side effects when using different pharmacological agents for the treatment of liver fibrosis in NAFLD. PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane Library were systematically searched to select related studies published in English from the database inception until 30 June 2022. We conducted Bayesian fixed-effects NMA using data from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to derive relative risks (RRs). The surface under the cumulative ranking (SUCRA) probabilities was used to assess ranking. A total of 26 RCTs with 19 interventions met the inclusion criteria. SUCRA analysis suggested that the lanifibranor group had the highest risk of diarrhea (SUCRA, 94), whereas the liraglutide group had the highest risk of constipation (SUCRA, 92.9). The semaglutide group showed the highest incidence of nausea (SUCRA, 81.2) and abdominal pain (SUCRA, 90.5), respectively. The cenicriviroc group showed the highest risk in the incidence of fatigue (SUCRA, 82.4). The MSDC-0602K group had the highest risk of headache (SUCRA, 76.4), whereas the obeticholic acid group had the highest risk of pruritus (SUCRA, 80.1). The risk of side effects significantly varied among different pharmacologic regimens, and evidence showed that lanifibranor, liraglutide, semaglutide, cenicriviroc, MSDC-0602K and obeticholic acid were the pharmacological interventions with the highest risk in patients with NAFLD. This study may guide clinicians and support further research.

Abstract
Background: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a burgeoning health problem worldwide. Genetic predisposition increases susceptibility to NAFLD. The PNPLA3 rs738409 and TM6SF2 rs58542926 polymorphisms are genetic risk factors for NAFLD. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the association of rs738409 and rs58542926 polymorphisms with NAFLD among the Iranian population in two groups: (1) Population-based NAFLD (PB-NAFLD), and (2) clinic-based NAFLD (CB-NAFLD). Methods: This case-control study included a group of healthy individuals without NAFLD as the control group and two case groups, PB-NAFLD and CB-NAFLD. All individuals underwent clinical and laboratory assessments and were also diagnosed using ultrasonography. Genotyping for rs738409 and rs58542926 polymorphisms was carried out by the PCR-RFLP method. Results: A total of 110 control, 108 PB-NAFLD, and 73 CB-NAFLD individuals were included in the study. The distribution of rs738409 GG+CG in the PB-NAFLD was 39.8% while it was 52.7% in the control group (P = 0.06, OR = 0.59). The distribution of rs738409 GG in the CB-NAFLD was 19.2%, while it was 8.2% in the control group (P = 0.04, OR = 2.66). The distribution of rs58542926 genotypes was not significantly different between the NAFLD and control groups. In multivariate analysis, metabolic syndrome (OR = 2.85) and BMI > 25 (OR = 3.32) were independent determinants of NAFLD in the PB-NAFLD group, and BMI > 25 (OR = 7.15) was an independent determinant of NAFLD in the CB-NAFLD group. Conclusions: In this study, the PNPLA3 rs738409 polymorphism was associated with NAFLD in the CB-NAFLD cohort; however, the same was not observed for the PB-NAFLD cohort. The TM6SF2 rs58542926 polymorphism was not associated with NAFLD in the Iranian population.

Abstract
The study aimed to compare the predictive value of the Circadian Syndrome (CircS) and Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) for cardiovascular disease (CVD). We used data of 12,156 adults aged ≥20 years who attended National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2016. Mortality was obtained from the registry updated to 2019. The CircS was defined based on components of the MetS, in addition to short sleep and depression. Both the MetS and CircS were directly associated with self-reported history of CVD. The odds ratios for prevalent CVD associated with the CircS and MetS, respectively, were 2.92 (95% confidence interval (CI) 2.21-3.86) and 3.20 (2.38-4.30) in men, and 3.27 (2.34-4.59) and 3.04 (2.15-4.30) in women. The CircS had a better predictive power for prevalent CVD than that of MetS, as indicated by the higher positive predictive value (PPV); in men, the PPV for prevalent CVD with CircS was 23.1% and with MetS 20.9%, and in women these were 17.9% vs. 16.4%, respectively. However, the PPV of the CircS and MetS did not differ for the CVD mortality prediction. Women with CircS alone had a higher risk for both prevalent CVD and CVD mortality than those with MetS alone. In conclusion, the CircS is a significant and stronger predictor for CVD than the MetS in US adults.

Abstract
This study evaluated the associations of liver fibrosis biomarkers [non-alcoholic fatty liver disease fibrosis score (NFS), fibrosis-4 (FIB-4), aspartate aminotransferase/platelet ratio index (APRI), and BARD score] with mortality in Korean adults aged ≥50 years. We analyzed 7,702 subjects who participated in Dong-gu Study. The associations of liber fibrosis biomarkers with mortality were investigated using Cox proportional hazards models. Overall mortality increased with increasing NFS level [adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 4.3, 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.3-5.5 for high risk vs. low risk], increasing FIB-4 level (aHR 3.5, 95% CI 2.9-4.4 for high risk vs. low risk), and increasing APRI level (aHR 3.5, 95% CI 2.1-5.8 for high risk vs. low risk) but not with BARD score. The Harrell's concordance index for overall mortality for the NFS and FIB-4 was greater than that for the APRI and BARD score. In conclusion, NFS, FIB-4, and APRI showed a significant relationship with the overall mortality, and NFS and FIB-4 showed a significant relationship with the CVD mortality after adjustment for covariates. In addition, the NFS and FIB-4 were more predictive of overall mortality than the APRI and BARD score in Korean adults aged ≥50 years.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Cirrhosis is a major public health issue worldwide with significant morbidity and mortality. We aimed to explore the time series associations between varying levels of risk factors and cirrhosis prevalence and predict the cirrhosis prevalence under alternative scenarios to consolidate evidence for further intervention plans. METHODS We collected data of cirrhosis and its risk factors from 1990 to 2019 across 178 countries and used a generalized linear mixed model to explore the time series associations between cirrhosis and risk factors. We simulated scenarios with varying levels of risk factors and investigated benefits gained from the control of risk factors compared with the status quo. RESULTS The global cirrhosis prevalence varied geographically, with the highest observed in East and Southeast Asia, mainly due to high hepatitis prevalence. Our study revealed that each 1% increase in prevalence of hepatitis B and C, cirrhosis prevalence would correspondingly increase 0.028% and 0.288%. There would be approximately 392.15 million fewer cirrhosis patients if the goals of a 65% reduction in prevalence of hepatitis and a 10% reduction in alcohol consumption were achieved. CONCLUSIONS Given that cirrhosis prevalence has different risk factors depending on geography, it is important to identify an appropriate set of interventions for cirrhosis that are adapted to the epidemiological situation in a specific country. Interventions targeting hepatitis may have a significant impact on global cirrhosis prevalence, therefore, the adoption of specific interventions for hepatitis in high-burden regions and high-risk groups is warranted to lower the global burden of cirrhosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The increasing rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus may lead to increased prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We aimed to determine the current and recent trends on the global and regional prevalence of NAFLD. METHODS Systematic search from inception to March 26, 2020 was performed without language restrictions. Two authors independently performed screening and data extraction. We performed meta-regression to determine trends in NAFLD prevalence. RESULTS We identified 17,244 articles from literature search and included 245 eligible studies involving 5,399,254 individuals. The pooled global prevalence of NAFLD was 29.8% (95% confidence interval [CI], 28.6%-31.1%); of these, 82.5% of included articles used ultrasound to diagnose NAFLD, with prevalence of 30.6% (95% CI, 29.2%-32.0%). South America (3 studies, 5716 individuals) and North America (4 studies, 18,236 individuals) had the highest NAFLD prevalence at 35.7% (95% CI, 34.0%-37.5%) and 35.3% (95% CI, 25.4%-45.9%), respectively. From 1991 to 2019, trend analysis showed NAFLD increased from 21.9% to 37.3% (yearly increase of 0.7%, P < .0001), with South America showing the most rapid change of 2.7% per year, followed by Europe at 1.1%. CONCLUSIONS Despite regional variation, the global prevalence of NAFLD is increasing overall. Policy makers must work toward reversing the current trends by increasing awareness of NAFLD and promoting healthy lifestyle environments.

Abstract
Background and study aims: Although abdominal ultrasound (USG) or controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) score of transient elastography (TE) is recommended for the diagnosis of fatty liver, issues regarding cost and accessibility still exist. The aim of this study was to evaluate if bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) can be used as a reliable screening tool for fatty liver. Patients and methods: A total of 249 patients who underwent all three tests including TE, BIA, and USG were enrolled. The correlation between fat mass measured by BIA, CAP score of TE, and fatty liver grade measured by USG was analyzed. In addition, the cut-off value of BIA which can predict the fatty liver grade was calculated. Results: Fat mass index (FMI) assessed by BIA increased significantly along with the rise in fatty liver grade measured by USG (normal: 6.2 ± 2.4, Gr I: 8.0 ± 3.7, Gr II: 10.6 ± 3.5, Gr III: 10.7 ± 3.7 kg/m2, p < 0.001). In addition, a positive correlation was found between the CAP score of TE and the FMI of BIA. Additionally, a total body fat mass increase by 24.3% or 29.8% in men and 34.8% or 35.1% in women increased the possibility of developing any grade of fatty liver or significant fatty liver (≥Gr II fatty liver), respectively. Conclusion: The total fat or fat mass index of BIA was related to fatty liver as assessed by ultrasound or CAP score, and area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) was about 0.8. Thus, BIA can be used as a screening tool for fatty liver in patients with suspected liver disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a wide spectrum condition characterized by excessive liver fat accumulation in people who do not abuse alcohol. There is no effective medical treatment for NAFLD; therefore, most important recommendations to reduce liver steatosis are diet and lifestyle, including proper physical activity. The aim of our study was to analyze the fatty acids and eicosanoids changes in the serum of patients who consumed high-fiber rolls for 8 weeks. MATERIALS AND METHODS The group of 28 Caucasian participants was randomly divided into two groups, those who received 24 g of fiber/day-from 2 buns of 12 g each (n = 14), and those who received 12 g of fiber/day-from 2 buns of 6 g (n = 14). At the beginning and on the last visit of the 8-week intervention, all patients underwent NAFLD evaluation, biochemical parameter measurements, and fatty acids and eicosanoids evaluation. RESULTS Patients who received 12 g of fiber had significantly reduced liver steatosis and body mass index. In the group who received 24 g of fiber/day, we observed a trend to liver steatosis reduction (p = 0.07) and significant decrease in aspartate aminotransferase (p = 0.03) and total cholesterol (p = 0.03). All changes in fatty acid and eicosanoids profile were similar. Fatty acids analysis revealed that extra fiber intake was associated with a significant increase in monounsaturated fatty acids and decrease in saturated fatty acids. Moreover, both groups showed increased concentration of gamma linoleic acid and docosahexaenoic acid. We also observed reduction in prostaglandin E2. CONCLUSIONS Our study revealed that a high amount of fiber in the diet is associated with a reduction in fatty liver, although this effect was more pronounced in patients in the lower fiber group. However, regardless of the amount of fiber consumed, we observed significant changes in the profile of FAs, which may reflect the positive changes in the lipids liver metabolism. Regardless of the amount of fiber consumed, patients decreased the amount of PGE2, which may indicate the lack of disease progression associated with the development of inflammation.

Abstract
Metabolic associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease, with an estimated prevalence of between 20 and 30% worldwide. Observational data supported by in vitro and pre-clinical animal models of MAFLD suggest meaningful differences in drug disposition in MAFLD patients. This study aimed to build a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model reflecting observed changes in physiological and molecular parameters relevant to drug disposition that are associated with MAFLD. A comprehensive literature review and meta-analysis was conducted to identify all studies describing in vivo physiological changes along with in vitro and pre-clinical model changes in CYP 1A2, 2C9, 2C19, 2D6 and 3A4 protein abundance associated with MAFLD. A MAFLD population profile was constructed in Simcyp (version 19.1) by adapting demographic and physiological covariates from the Sim-Healthy population profile based on a meta-analysis of observed data from the published literature. Simulations demonstrated that single dose and steady state area under the plasma concentration time curve (AUC) for caffeine, clozapine, omeprazole, metoprolol, dextromethorphan and midazolam, but not s-warfarin or rosiglitazone, were increased by >20% in the MAFLD population compared to the healthy control population. These findings indicate that MAFLD patients are likely to be experience meaningfully higher exposure to drugs that are primarily metabolized by CYP 1A2, 2C19, 2D6 and 3A4, but not CYP2C9. Closer monitoring of MAFLD patients using drugs primarily cleared by CYP 1A2, 2C19 and 3A4 is warranted as reduced metabolic activity and increased drug exposure are likely to result in an increased incidence of toxicity in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Within the next decade, NAFLD is predicted to become the most prevalent cause of childhood liver failure in developed countries. Predisposition to juvenile NAFLD can be programmed during early life in response to maternal metabolic syndrome (MetS), but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. We hypothesized that imprinted genes, defined by expression from a single parental allele, play a key role in maternal MetS-induced NAFLD, due to their susceptibility to environmental stressors and their functions in liver homeostasis. We aimed to test this hypothesis and determine the critical periods of susceptibility to maternal MetS. APPROACH AND RESULTS We established a mouse model to compare the effects of MetS during prenatal and postnatal development on NAFLD. Postnatal but not prenatal MetS exposure is associated with histological, biochemical, and molecular signatures of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in juvenile mice. Using RNA sequencing, we show that the Imprinted Gene Network (IGN), including its regulator Zac1, is up-regulated and overrepresented among differentially expressed genes, consistent with a role in maternal MetS-induced NAFLD. In support of this, activation of the IGN in cultured hepatoma cells by overexpressing Zac1 is sufficient to induce signatures of profibrogenic transformation. Using chromatin immunoprecipitation, we demonstrate that Zac1 binds the TGF-β1 and COL6A2 promoters, forming a direct pathway between imprinted genes and well-characterized pathophysiological mechanisms of NAFLD. Finally, we show that hepatocyte-specific overexpression of Zac1 is sufficient to drive fibrosis in vivo. CONCLUSIONS Our findings identify a pathway linking maternal MetS exposure during postnatal development to the programming of juvenile NAFLD, and provide support for the hypothesis that imprinted genes play a central role in metabolic disease programming.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite confirmed dietary approaches to improve the Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), the effect of fruits on NAFLD is not clear. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of a fruit rich diet (FRD) on liver steatosis, liver enzymes, Insulin resistance, and lipid profile in patients with NAFLD. METHODS Eighty adults with NAFLD participated in this randomized controlled trial. The participants were randomly assigned to the FRD group with consumption of at least 4 servings of fruits daily or the control group with fruits consumption of less than 2 servings/day. The grade of steatosis, serum levels of liver enzymes including alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), glucose, and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were measured at the baseline and at the end of the study. RESULTS After 6 months of intervention, the FRD group had significantly higher BMI (31.40 ± 2.61 vs. 25.68 ± 2.54, p < .001), WC (113.5 ± 10.7 vs. 100.5 ± 7.5, p < .001), the grade of steatosis, ALT (89.1 ± 92.9 vs. 32.0 ± 19.2, p < .001), AST (74.5 ± 107.8 vs. 24.0 ± 8.5, p < .001), ALP (273.4 ± 128.5 vs. 155.0 ± 43.9, p < .001), GGT (92.7 ± 16.2 vs. 21.2 ± 7.7, p < .001), TC (206.1 ± 40.5 vs. 172.7 ± 42.4, p < .01), LDL (126.9 ± 32.3 vs. 99.8 ± 29.8, p < .001), glucose (115.5 ± 30.0 vs. 97.7 ± 19.0, p < .01), and insulin resistance (7.36 ± 4.37 vs. 2.66 ± 1.27, p < .001), and lower HDL (41.4 ± 8.9 vs. 53.8 ± 15.1, p < .001) compared to the control group. Adjusting for BMI and calorie intake did not change the results. CONCLUSION The results of the present study indicated that consumption of fruits more than 4 servings/day exacerbates steatosis, dyslipidemia, and glycemic control in NAFLD patients. Further studies are needed to identify the underlying mechanisms of the effects of fruits on NAFLD. Abstract
Background: Due to the high prevalence of hepatic steatosis (HS), the aim of the study is to verify the frequency of HS incidentally detected in chest computed tomography (CT) imaging in our population affected by SARS-CoV-2 and to investigate its association with the severity of the infection and outcome in terms of hospitalization. Design and methods: We retrospectively analyzed 500 patients with flu syndrome and clinically suspected of having Sars-CoV-2 infection who underwent unenhanced chest CT and have positive RT-PCR tests for Sars-CoV-2 RNA. Two radiologists both with >5 years of thoracic imaging experience, evaluated the images in consensus, without knowing the RT-PCR results. Liver density was measured by a region of interest (ROI), using a liver attenuation value ≤40 Hounsfield units (HU). Results: On 480 patients, 23.1% (111/480) had an incidental findings of HS on chest CT. The steatosis group, included 83 (74.7%) males and 28 (25.3%) females. Patients with HS were more likely to be hospitalized in the intensive care unit (ICU). On univariate analysis, there is a correlation between probability to be intubate (access in the ICU) and HS: patients with HS are twice as likely to be intubated (OR 2.04, CI 95% 1.11–3.73). Conclusion: Chest CT is an important diagnostic tool for COVID-19 and can provide information about the prognosis of the disease. HS can easily be detected on chest CT taken for the diagnosis of the COVID-19 disease, is an important sign for a poor prognosis and possible predictor of admission in ICU.

Abstract
Background: The aim of the study is to research the relationship between the severity of liver fibrosis and the burden of carotid and systemic atherosclerosis. Methods: The study includes 163 patients 40 to 64 years of age without atherosclerotic CVD or liver disease. All patients underwent duplex scanning of the carotid and lower limb arteries. All patients underwent transient liver elastometry using the FibroScan (Echosens, France). Results: Carotid plaque was detected in 110 (67.5%) patients. Based on the results of linear regression analysis, relationships between liver stiffness and carotid total plaque area (r = 0.21; p = 0.025) were found. Significant relationships were established between liver stiffness and atherosclerosis burden score based on the results of linear regression (r = 0.17; p = 0.029). Liver stiffness showed moderate diagnostic performance (AUC 0.666; p = 0.01) with regard to generalized atherosclerosis. An increase in liver stiffness >4.5 kPa was associated with an odds ratio of generalized atherosclerosis of 3.48 (95% CI 1.07−11.3; p = 0.038) after adjusting confounding factors. Conclusion: Among patients 40−64 years of age without established atherosclerotic CVD and liver disease, liver stiffness directly correlates with the burden of carotid and systemic atherosclerosis. Liver stiffness showed moderate diagnostic performance (AUC 0.666; p = 0.01) with regard to generalized atherosclerosis.

Abstract
We have previously shown in a murine model of Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) that chronic, low-dose exposure to the Harmful Algal Bloom cyanotoxin microcystin-LR (MC-LR), resulted in significant hepatotoxicity including micro-vesicular lipid accumulation, impaired toxin metabolism as well as dysregulation of the key signaling pathways involved in inflammation, immune response and oxidative stress. On this background we hypothesized that augmentation of hepatic drug metabolism pathways with targeted antioxidant therapies would improve MC-LR metabolism and reduce hepatic injury in NAFLD mice exposed to MC-LR. We chose N-acetylcysteine (NAC, 40 mM), a known antioxidant that augments the glutathione detoxification pathway and a novel peptide (pNaKtide, 25 mg/kg) which is targeted to interrupting a specific Src-kinase mediated pro-oxidant amplification mechanism. Histological analysis showed significant increase in hepatic inflammation in NAFLD mice exposed to MC-LR which was attenuated on treatment with both NAC and pNaKtide (both p ≤ 0.05). Oxidative stress, as measured by 8-OHDG levels in urine and protein carbonylation in liver sections, was also significantly downregulated upon treatment with both antioxidants after MC-LR exposure. Genetic analysis of key drug transporters including Abcb1a, Phase I enzyme-Cyp3a11 and Phase II metabolic enzymes-Pkm (Pyruvate kinase, muscle), Pklr (Pyruvate kinase, liver, and red blood cell) and Gad1 (Glutamic acid decarboxylase) was significantly altered by MC-LR exposure as compared to the non-exposed control group (all p ≤ 0.05). These changes were significantly attenuated with both pNaKtide and NAC treatment. These results suggest that MC-LR metabolism and detoxification is significantly impaired in the setting of NAFLD, and that these pathways can potentially be reversed with targeted antioxidant treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Noninvasive tests (NITs) are necessary for knowing the true prevalence of fatty liver (FL) and advanced fibrosis. NITs for diagnosis of FL and fibrosis were compared. METHODS Data were obtained from the National Health and Examination Survey (2017-2018). Participants were excluded with other liver diseases, missing data for NIT calculation, and/or excessive alcohol use. Area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) compared the accuracy of 4 FL NITs (CAP, HSI, FLI, USFLI) among themselves and to CAP value of 285 dB/m and 5 fibrosis NITs (transient elastography, APRI, NFS, FIB-4, HEPAmet) among themselves and to LSM ≥8.7 kPa. RESULTS Among 2,051 participants (average age 47 (±17.7), 48% males, 62% white, 73% overweight/obese, 39% metabolic syndrome), demographics were similar among NIT groups (CAP = 812; HSI = 1,234; FLI = 935; USFLI-824). FL prevalence by NIT: 39% CAP, 58% HSI, 47% FLI, 37% USFLI. Advanced fibrosis prevalence by test: LSM (≥8.7 kPa) 10-14%; FIB-4 (≥2.67) and APRI (≥0.7) 1.3-2.7%; HEPAmet (>0.47) 14-21%. Compared to CAP ≥285, FLI (AUROC = 0.823) and USFLI (AUROC = 0.833) performed better than HSI (AUROC: 0.798). Compared to LSM ≥8.7 kPa, only NFS (AUROC = 0.722) performed well (FIB-4 AUROC = 0.606; APRI = 0.647; HEPAmet = 0.629). Among the CAP cohort, the strongest FL predictor was obesity (OR: 15.2, 95% CI: 7.97-28.9, p < 0.001); the only fibrosis predictor was elevated AST (OR: 1.06, 95% CI: 1.00-1.12, p = 0.04). The addition of CAP or LSM as a second NIT reduced the number of indeterminate patients especially for FL. CONCLUSIONS Regardless of diagnostic method in 2017-2018, the prevalence of NAFLD was >35%. NITs for FL performed well but not for advanced fibrosis. CAP and LSM as a second NIT reduced those considered indeterminate.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To analyze the possible factors causing fatty liver in children based on ultrasound data of children in south Texas, and to establish machine learning models of fatty liver in children to provide ideas for the prevention and treatment of fatty liver in children. METHODS The binary classification model of fatty liver problem in obese children in Texas was established under the multiple model. First, we selected important features using the CatBoost algorithm. Second, the best parameters of the algorithm were selected on the training set and the validation set by using the grid search method, and all six models were tested on the test set. The six models then were compared by area under the curve value, precision, accuracy, recall rate, and F1 score in a model evaluation. Then, two algorithms, logic regression and CatBoost, were selected to establish prediction models of fatty liver disease in children. RESULTS We selected body mass index, height, liver size, kidney volume, glomerular filtration rate, and liver diameter as the features used in the machine learning model. The prediction models we chose showed that children with higher body mass index at the same age tended to have a greater probability of fatty liver. CONCLUSIONS Based on the analysis of the results of the two prediction models established by logistic regression and CatBoost, we determined that the mean probability of fatty liver in severely obese children was between 74.47% and 92.22%, 73.45% and 85.41% in obese children, and slightly higher in boys than in girls, with a mean difference of 3.00% to 3.95%.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), heart failure (HF), and all-cause mortality. BACKGROUND Both NAFLD and HF are increasing in prevalence due to shared risk factors. METHODS We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018 to identify non-pregnant individuals aged ≥20 years with HF and NAFLD and linked with the cause of death data from the National Center for Health Statistics. The associations between NAFLD, HF, and all-cause mortality were assessed using logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard modeling as appropriate. RESULTS There were 82,358,893 weighted eligible participants of whom 3,833,667 (4.7%) had NAFLD. The mean (SE) age was 51.5 (0.35) years, 45.1% women, 63.0% Non-Hispanic White and 11.8% Non-Hispanic Black. Cardiovascular comorbidities were more common in participants with NAFLD; they were more likely to have hypertension (81.7% vs 53.5%), diabetes (65.1% vs 17.1%), stroke (7.3% vs 4.1%), coronary artery disease (14.9% vs 8.4%), or HF (10.5% v s 3.5%) compared with participants without NAFLD. In multivariate logistic regression models adjusting for age, race/ethnicity and sex, participants with NAFLD were 3.5 times more likely to have HF [aOR, 95% CI: 3.47 (1.98-6.06)]. Older age, male sex, presence of diabetes and coronary artery disease were associated with higher odds of HF in participants with established NAFLD. At the end of the follow-up period, participants with NAFLD had higher all-cause mortality compared with participants without NAFLD [HR(95% CI): 1.93 (1.24-2.99), p<0.001]. CONCLUSION In this analysis of US adults, ambulatory participants with NAFLD were ∼3.5 times more likely to have HF, and twice as likely to experience mortality compared with participants without NAFLD. Further studies are needed to identify the possible linkage between NAFLD and HF beyond the shared risk factor pathogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Most population-based studies of risk profiles for liver steatosis have relied upon serum markers (e.g., ALT or FIB-4) or ultrasound steatosis index to define cases. We sought to examine racial/ethnic differences in metabolic risk factors associated with liver steatosis and fibrosis at the population level using elastography-based measures. METHODS In total, 4509 adults completed vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) with controlled attenuated parameter (CAP) examinations in the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examinations Survey. Race/ethnicity was self-identified; metabolic parameters included waist circumference, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. Primary outcome was steatosis defined by CAP score ≥ 280 decibels per meter and secondary outcome significant fibrosis by VCTE median stiffness ≥ 8 kilopascals. Race-specific logistic regression models were performed to assess the relationship between metabolic parameters and hepatic steatosis and fibrosis. RESULTS Prevalence of elastography-based hepatic steatosis was > 30% for all race/ethnicities. Steatosis was associated with increasing waist circumference for all race/ethnicities (OR ranging 1.7-2.3, p < 0.01). Steatosis was associated with diabetes for Whites (OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.2-4.7), Asians (OR 3.0, 1.4-6.3), and Hispanics (OR 2.2, 1.3-3.6), but not Blacks (OR 1.3, 0.8-2.2); hypertension for Whites (OR 1.7, 1.3-4.7) and Asians (OR 2.1, 1.1-3.8); and hyperlipidemia for Blacks only (OR 2.2, 1.3-3.7). Of metabolic risk factors, higher odds of fibrosis were demonstrated with higher waist circumference per 10 cm increase (OR 2.1, 1.8-2.4) and diabetes (OR 2.5, 1.6-3.7), but the effect of diabetes was present in all racial/ethnic groups except Blacks (p-interaction < 0.05). CONCLUSION Blacks have a distinct metabolic phenotype for steatosis, while Asians, Whites, and Hispanics are more similar. Racial/ethnic differences in risk profiles are important to consider in prevention, screening strategies, and interventions for fatty liver disease.
