Abstract
BACKGROUND Achalasia poses a significant socioeconomic burden, yet global trends remain undocumented. This study aims to describe the worldwide trends in the incidence and prevalence of achalasia from 1925 to 2021 and explore their correlation with various factors through a comprehensive systematic review. METHODS We searched the PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane databases from inception to 30 June 2023, to identify studies reporting the incidence or prevalence of achalasia in the general population. This study utilized pooled estimates with 95% confidence intervals (CI) to estimate the incidence and prevalence of achalasia, and conducted various subgroup analyses. RESULTS A total of 26 eligible studies covering approximately 269 million participants and 20,873 patients from 14 countries across five continents were included. Global pooled incidence and prevalence of achalasia were estimated to be 0.78 cases per 100,000 person-years (95% CI, 0.64-0.93; number of studies, 26; sample population, 269,315,171) and 10.82 cases per 100,000 person-years (95% CI, 8.15-13.48; number of studies, 14; sample population, 192,176,076), respectively. The incidence of achalasia was higher in Oceania (than Asia and Africa) and in adults (than children) after the introduction of the Chicago classification. Prevalence followed a similar pattern. The pooled incidence of achalasia showed an overall upward trend from 1925 to 2021 (1925-1999; 0.40 [0.32-0.49] vs. 2018-2021; 1.64 [1.33-1.95] cases per 100,000 person-years). CONCLUSIONS The incidence and prevalence of achalasia have notably increased, particularly with advancements in diagnosis, and show significant variation worldwide, despite the large heterogeneity within the sample population. Further studies are necessary to accurately assess the global incidence and prevalence of achalasia.

Abstract
Although functional dyspepsia (FD) is a common functional gastroduodenal disorder with a high socioeconomic burden, little is known about its global prevalence. Thus, we performed a comprehensive study to estimate long-term trends in the prevalence of FD. We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Google Scholar from 1990 to 2022 for population-based studies that reported the prevalence of FD in adults (≥ 18 years old) according to Rome I, II, III, or IV criteria. The prevalence of FD was extracted from included studies to obtain pooled prevalence with 95% confidence intervals (CI) and 95% prediction intervals. Subgroup analysis was performed according to certain characteristics, including geographic region. A total of 44 studies met the eligibility criteria, including 256,915 participants from 40 countries across six continents. The overall global pooled prevalence of FD was 8.4% (95% CI 7.4-.9.5). The prevalence was the highest in Rome I (11.9%; 95% CI 5.1-25.4) and lowest in Rome IV (6.8%; 95% CI 5.8-7.9). Developing countries showed a higher prevalence than developed countries (9.1% versus 8.0%), and prevalence was higher in women, irrespective of the definition used (9.0% versus 7.0%). The pooled prevalence gradually decreased from 1990 to 2020 (12.4% [8.2-18.3] in 1990-2002 versus 7.3% [6.1-8.7] in 2013-2020). The prevalence of FD differs by country, economic status, geographical region, and sex, and the global prevalence has been gradually declining. Despite the heterogeneity of sample population, our study estimates the current global burden of FD and provides information to heath care policy decisions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Owing to 2018 expanded diagnostic criteria for eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and thus a possible increase in diagnosis, previous studies on the global incidence and prevalence of EoE may need to be updated. We aimed to describe global, regional, and national trends in the incidence and prevalence of EoE from 1976 to 2022 and analyze their associations with geographic, demographic, and social factors through a systematic review. METHODS We searched the PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and Cochrane databases from their inception dates to December 20, 2022, for studies that reported the incidence or prevalence of EoE in the general population. We calculated the global incidence and prevalence of EoE using pooled estimates with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) and performed subgroup analysis based on age, sex, race, geographical area, World Bank income group, and diagnostic criteria of EoE. RESULTS Forty studies met the eligibility criteria, including over 288 million participants and 147,668 patients with EoE from 15 countries across the five continents. The global pooled incidence and prevalence of EoE were 5.31 cases per 100,000 inhabitant-years (95% CI, 3.98-6.63; number of studies, 27; sample population, 42,191,506) and 40.04 cases per 100,000 inhabitant-years (95% CI, 31.10-48.98; number of studies, 20; sample population, 30,467,177), respectively. The pooled incidence of EoE was higher in high-income countries (vs low- or middle-income countries), males, and North America (vs Europe and Asia). The global prevalence of EoE followed a similar pattern. The pooled prevalence of EoE gradually increased from 1976 to 2022 (1976-2001; 8.18; 95% CI, 3.67-12.69 vs 2017-2022; 74.42; 95% CI, 39.66-109.19 cases per 100,000 inhabitant-years). CONCLUSIONS The incidence and prevalence of EoE have increased substantially and vary widely across the world. Further research is needed to evaluate the incidence and prevalence of EoE in Asia, South America, and Africa.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although previous studies have provided data on early pandemic periods of alcohol and substance use in adolescents, more adequate studies are needed to predict the trends of alcohol and substance use during recent periods, including the mid-pandemic period. This study investigated the changes in alcohol and substance use, except tobacco use, throughout the pre-, early-, and mid-pandemic periods in adolescents using a nationwide serial cross-sectional survey from South Korea. METHODS Data on 1,109,776 Korean adolescents aged 13-18 years from 2005 to 2021 were obtained in a survey operated by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. We evaluated adolescents' alcohol and substance consumption prevalence and compared the slope of alcohol and substance prevalence before and during the COVID-19 pandemic to see the trend changes. We define the pre-COVID-19 period as consisting of four groups of consecutive years (2005-2008, 2009-2012, 2013-2015, and 2016-2019). The COVID-19 pandemic period is composed of 2020 (early-pandemic era) and 2021 (mid-pandemic era). RESULTS More than a million adolescents successfully met the inclusion criteria. The weighted prevalence of current alcohol use was 26.8% [95% confidence interval (CI) 26.4-27.1] from 2005 to 2008 and 10.5% (95% CI 10.1-11.0) in 2020 and 2021. The weighted prevalence of substance use was 1.1% (95% CI 1.1-1.2) from 2005 to 2008 and 0.7% (95% CI 0.6-0.7) between 2020 and 2021. From 2005 to 2021, the overall trend of use of both alcohol and drugs was found to decrease, but the decline has slowed since COVID-19 epidemic (current alcohol use: βdiff 0.167; 95% CI 0.150-0.184; substance use: βdiff 0.152; 95% CI 0.110-0.194). The changes in the slope of current alcohol and substance use showed a consistent slowdown with regard to sex, grade, residence area, and smoking status from 2005 to 2021. CONCLUSION The overall prevalence of alcohol consumption and substance use among over one million Korean adolescents from the early and mid-stage (2020-2021) of the COVID-19 pandemic showed a slower decline than expected given the increase during the prepandemic period (2005-2019).

Abstract
Objectives Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic, relapsing, and remittent inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract. Nutritional deficiency may be instrumental in and attributable to this disease. We examined the effect of VitB12 supplementation on acetic acid (AA)-induced colitis in rats. Material and Methods Five minutes after the application of acetic acid to the rats to create a colitis model, VitB12 was administered 1 mg/kg, i.p concentration, then the application continued for three consecutive days. Control groups were included for colitis and VitB12. After 4d, the rats were sacrificed, and colonic tissues were harvested for macroscopic and microscopic examination of colonic damage. TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, MDA, GSH and SOD values were measured biochemically. Results There was statistically significant macroscopic improvement in damage to the colon tissues (p <0.05). The severity of inflammation reduced in the VitB12 treated rat group compared with the control group, but was not significantly. The levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, MDA, and SOD did not differ between AA control and VitB12 treated AA colitis group. However, the levels of IL-6 and GSH were statistically significant different in rats with AA-induced colitis after VitB12 injection (p <0.05). Conclusion Nutritional deficiencies might contribute to the pathogenesis of IBD, and the efficacy of VitB12 supplementation has controversial effects on the intestinal mucosa.

Abstract
With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, several previous studies from different countries showed that physical activity (PA) decreased during the COVID-19 outbreak. However, few studies have examined the recent tendency of PA in the adolescent population. Thus, we aimed to investigate the long-term trend of PA in Korean youth and the prevalence changes between before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Data from Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey (KYRBS) was collected for consecutive years between 2009 and 2021. The period was separated into prepandemic (2009-2019), early-pandemic (2020), and mid-pandemic (2021). Self-reported amount of PA was categorized into four groups (insufficient, aerobic, muscle strengthening, and both physical activities) according to World Health Organization (WHO) PA guidelines. A total of 840 488 adolescents aged 12-18 who fully responded to the survey were selected (response rate: 95.2%). The 13-year trends in the proportion of adolescents who reported aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities met or exceeded 2020 WHO exercise guidelines for adolescents plateaued (11.9% from 2009 to 2011, 14.2% from 2018 to 2019, 14.4% from 2020, and 14.0% from 2021); however, the slope decreased during the pandemic (βdiff , -0.076; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.123 to -0.029). Proportion of sufficient aerobic exercise among adolescents sharply decreased midst the pandemic (28.0% from 2009 to 2011, 29.4% from 2018 to 2019, and 23.8% from 2020; βdiff , -0.266; 95% CI, -0.306 to -0.226) but increased again in 2021 (26.0% from mid-COVID 19; 95% CI, 25.4-26.7). Similar patterns were observed in Metabolic Equivalent Task (MET) score (MET-min/week; 804.1 from 2018 to 2019, 720.9 from 2020, and 779.6 from 2021). The mean difference in MET score between pre-COVID and post-COVID was -55.4 MET-min/week (95% CI, -70.5 to -40.3). Through a nationwide representative study, there was no significant difference with regard to the number of Korean adolescents who achieved the PA guidelines (pre and postpandemic); however, the prevalence of recommended levels of PA needs to increase more based on the trend before the COVID-19 outbreak. The findings of this study suggest reinforcement of the importance of public health policies for Korean youths to be more physically active, especially during and after the pandemic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There is a lack of pediatric studies that have analyzed trends in mean body mass index (BMI) and the prevalence of obesity and overweight over a period that includes the mid-stage of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, we aimed to investigate trends in BMI, overweight, and obesity among Korean adolescents from 2005 to 2021, including the COVID-19 pandemic. SUBJECTS AND METHODS We used data from the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS), which is nationally representative of South Korea. The study included middle- and high-school students between the ages of 12 and 18. We examined trends in mean BMI and prevalence of obesity and/or overweight during the COVID-19 pandemic and compared these to those of pre-pandemic trends in each subgroup by gender, grade, and residential region. RESULTS Data from 1,111,300 adolescents (mean age: 15.04 years) were analyzed. The estimated weighted mean BMI was 20.48 kg/m2 (95% CI, 20.46-20.51) between 2005 and 2007, and this was 21.61 kg/m2 (95% CI, 21.54-21.68) in 2021. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 13.1% (95% CI, 12.9-13.3%) between 2005 and 2007 and 23.4% (95% CI, 22.8-24.0%) in 2021. The mean BMI and prevalence of obesity and overweight have gradually increased over the past 17 years; however, the extent of change in mean BMI and in the prevalence of obesity and overweight during the pandemic was distinctly less than before. The 17-year trends in the mean BMI, obesity, and overweight exhibited a considerable rise from 2005 to 2021; however, the slope during the COVID-19 pandemic (2020-2021) was significantly less prominent than in the pre-pandemic (2005-2019). CONCLUSIONS These findings enable us to comprehend long-term trends in the mean BMI of Korean adolescents and further emphasize the need for practical prevention measures against youth obesity and overweight.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Peroral endoscopic myotomy is associated with a low risk of adverse events. Mucosal injury is the most common intraprocedural adverse event of peroral endoscopic myotomy. Severe mucosal injury may cause serious consequences, such as esophageal leak and mediastinitis, which affect the outcome of the procedure and prolong hospital stay. The aim of the present study was to determine the characteristics, predictors, and management approaches for unintended mucosal injury during peroral endoscopic myotomy. METHODS A total of 211 patients who underwent peroral endoscopic myotomy between November 2014 and June 2019 were enrolled in this study. Mucosal injury was defined according to a previous study and maintained in the endoscopy database. Patient-related and procedure-related factors were compared between patients with and without mucosal injury. Multivariate analysis was performed after adjusting for confounding factors. RESULTS A total of 206 patients were eligible for study enrollment. Of these, 44 experienced mucosal injury, with an overall frequency of 21.4% (44/206). On multivariable analysis, mucosal injury was associated with submucosal fibrosis (odds ratio, 8.33; P = .024), intraprocedural bleeding (OR, 14.29; P < .001), endoscopic diameter of 9.9 mm (OR, 4.389; P = .006), and procedure duration over 60 minutes (OR, 1.016; P = .034). CONCLUSION Mucosal injury is a significant event encountered during peroral endoscopic myotomy, affecting its short- and long-term outcomes. Intra-procedural bleeding, endoscopic submucosal fibrosis, and use of an endoscope with a large outer diameter have been found to be significant predictors of mucosal injury. Endoscopists should pay more attention to risk factors associated with mucosal injury to avoid adverse events.

Abstract
Marine mussels secrete adhesive proteins to attach to solid surfaces. These proteins contain phenolic and basic amino acids exhibiting wet adhesion properties. This study used a mussel-inspired hemostatic polymer, chitosan-catechol, to treat gastrointestinal bleeding caused by endoscopic mucosal resection in a heparinized porcine model. We aimed to evaluate the hemostatic efficacy and short-term safety of this wet adhesive chitosan-catechol. We used 15 heparinized pigs. Four iatrogenic bleeding ulcers classified as Forrest Ib were created in each pig using an endoscopic mucosal resection method. One ulcer in each pig was untreated as a negative control (no-treatment group). The other three ulcers were treated with gauze (gauze group), argon plasma coagulation (APC group), and chitosan-catechol hemostatic agent (CHI-C group) each. The pigs were sacrificed on Days 1, 5, and 10, and histological examination was performed (n = 5 per day). Rapid hemostasis observed at 2 min after bleeding was 93.3% (14/15) in the CHI-C group, 6.7% (1/15) in the no-treatment group, 13.3% (2/15) in the gauze group, and 86.7% (13/15) in the APC group. No re-bleeding was observed in the CHI-C group during the entire study period. However, a few re-bleeding cases were observed on Day 1 in the no-treatment, gauze, and APC groups and on Day 5 in the gauze and APC groups. On histological analysis, the CHI-C group showed the best tissue healing among the four test groups. Considering the results, chitosan-catechol is an effective hemostatic material with reduced re-bleeding and improved healing.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The adverse effects of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have been documented for pneumonia; however, there is no consensus regarding whether the use of PPIs might be harmful regarding the risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection. In this regard, we aimed to measure the potential associations of the current use of PPIs with the infection rates of COVID-19 among patients who underwent SARS-CoV-2 testing. DESIGN Data were derived from a Korean nationwide cohort study with propensity score matching. We included 132 316 patients older than 18 years who tested for SARS-CoV-2 between 1 January and 15 May 2020. Endpoints were SARS-CoV-2 positivity (primary) and severe clinical outcomes of COVID-19 (secondary: admission to intensive care unit, administration of invasive ventilation or death). RESULTS In the entire cohort, there were 111 911 non-users, 14 163 current PPI users and 6242 past PPI users. After propensity score matching, the SARS-CoV-2 test positivity rate was not associated with the current or past use of PPIs. Among patients with confirmed COVID-19, the current use of PPIs conferred a 79% greater risk of severe clinical outcomes of COVID-19, while the relationship with the past use of PPIs remained insignificant. Current PPI use starting within the previous 30 days was associated with a 90% increased risk of severe clinical outcomes of COVID-19. CONCLUSION Patients taking PPIs are at increased risk for severe clinical outcomes of COVID-19 but not susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection. This suggests that physicians need to assess benefit-risk assessments in the management of acid-related diseases amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Background/Aims To date, there is no standard tool to diagnose gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Typically, GERD is a non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) that does not present endoscopic abnormalities. Confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) has been shown to be an effective tool to identify and diagnose GERD. We aimed to investigate the cellular and vascular changes in vivo and ex vivo through CLE in patients with GERD.
Methods Patients with refractory GERD who underwent mucosectomy were recruited. The distal esophagus was observed in vivo using CLE. Mucosectomy tissue was stained with acriflavine and CLE image was obtained ex vivo. We compared cellular and vascular changes in CLE between erosive reflux disease (ERD), NERD, and a control group.
Results Eleven patients who underwent anti-reflux mucosectomy and five control patients were enrolled in the study. Patients with ERD and NERD presented greater dilated intercellular space than patients in the control group on CLE image. The diameter, number, and cross-sectional area of the intra-papillary capillary loops (IPCLs) were significantly larger in the ERD group than in the NERD group. The irregular shape of the IPCLs were observed in both patients with ERD and NERD.
Conclusions The irregular shape of the IPCLs were significantly correlated with a positive diagnosis of GERD. CLE may diagnose NERD with high sensitivity and accuracy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The management of food impaction and foreign body ingestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract requires careful evaluation and timely intervention. This study was a retrospective evaluation of the management of adult patients with such a history. METHODS This study included adult patients admitted to a tertiary medical center with foreign body ingestion or food impaction between January 2012 and January 2018. The demographic and clinical data were recorded pro forma for statistical analysis. RESULTS Of the 122 patients included in this study, 53.2% were male, and the mean age was 46.68+-18.64 years. In 84 of the patients (68.8%), the ingested object was food. Thirty patients were managed solely through laryngoscopy, while 61 patients (50%) underwent a flexible endoscopy. The patients with a foreign body ingestion were older than those with a food impaction (mean age: 51.3+-17.4 vs. 36.5+-17.4 years; p<0.001) and a plain radiograph showed the ingested material more often in those patients (36.8% vs 10.7%; p<0.001). Two patients underwent surgery due to perforations caused by the impacted material. No mortality was observed. CONCLUSION The management of a foreign body ingestion or food impaction in an emergency setting requires a stepwise, algorithmic approach.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM The incidence of acute cholecystitis (AC) increases with age, and aging is also one of the poor prognostic factors. Aging is related to altered physiology, so diseases may show different characteristics in elderly patients. We aimed to investigate the differences between the main characteristic features of AC in elderly and nonelderly patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this retrospective study, patients who had a diagnosis of AC were included and divided into two groups of people aged <65 years or >65 years. Laboratory and ultrasonographic findings related to AC were compared statistically between elderly and nonelderly patients. RESULTS The data of 305 patients diagnosed with AC were recorded. Patients in the nonelderly group were more likely to be female, but in elderly patients the sex distribution was similar. There were no significant differences with respect to liver function tests and ultrasonographic findings at the time of admission between the elderly and nonelderly groups. However, the elderly group had a significantly higher rate of patients with an elevated white blood cell count and higher C-reactive protein values than the nonelderly group. CONCLUSION Aging is related to altered immunologic and pathophysiologic processes. Thus, age and baseline comorbidities influence overall mortality rates. Efforts should be made to understand disease mechanisms and minimize avoidable harms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM To investigate whether focal high maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) determined by 18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET)-computed tomography (CT) imaging is correlated with proliferation index in the colorectal region. MATERIALS AND METHODS SUVmax values of 31 colorectal neoplasms that were incidentally detected during PET-CT examination were compared to dysplasia degree, histopathologic diagnosis, and immunohistochemical expression of the Ki-67 proliferation marker. RESULTS Statistically significant correlations were found between SUVmax and Ki-67 proliferation index, dysplasia degree, and histopathologic diagnosis. Median SUVmax value was found to be significantly higher in high-risk lesions than low-risk lesions. CONCLUSION The Ki-67 proliferation index is an indicator of SUVmax in colorectal tract. SUVmax values can predict malignancy and prognosis in this region. Colonoscopy and biopsy should always be performed whenever a focal high FDG uptake is determined incidentally in a patient.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Vitamin D deficiency has been related to diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia and peripheral vascular disease. In this study, we aimed to investigate the role of vitamin D status in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. METHODS We included 211 consecutive subjects to examine the presence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Of these subjects, 57 did not have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and 154 had non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. RESULTS The non-alcoholic fatty liver disease group had significantly higher fasting blood glucose (p = 0.005), uric acid (p = 0.001), aspartate aminotransferase (p<0.001), alanine aminotransferase (p<0.001), γ-glutamyltransferase (p<0.0001), alkaline phosphatase (p = 0.028), HbA1c (p<0.001), ferritin (p<0.001), insulin (p = 0.016), C-peptide (p = 0.001), HOMA-IR (p = 0.003), total cholesterol (p = 0.001), triglyceride (p = 0.001) and white blood cell (p = 0.04) levels. In contrast, the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease group had significantly lower 25(OH)D levels (12.3±8.9 ng/dl, p<0.001) compared with those of the control group (20±13.6 ng/dl). CONCLUSIONS In this study, we found lower serum 25(OH)D levels in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease than in subjects without non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. To establish causality between vitamin D and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, further interventional studies with a long-term follow-up are needed.

Abstract
Aim Acute pancreatitis (AP) is an inflammatory disorder, the incidence of which has been increasing over recent years. Mean platelet volume (MPV) is an index of platelet activation and influenced by inflammation. The objective of the present study is to assess whether MPV would be convenient parameters for predictor factor of patients with AP. Materials and methods A total of 140 AP patients (male/female: 63/77) and 70 healthy subjects (male/female: 23/47) were enrolled in this study. The following data were extracted from the hospital medical records, including age, sex, platelet count, MPV, were recorded at the time of admission and as well as at the 1st day of remission of the disease. Results Mean platelet volume levels at onset and remission of AP were 7.8 ± 1.6 and 7.7 ± 0.9 respectively, and there was no statistically significant difference between these groups. Platelet count at onset and remission of AP and control subjects was 203 ± 74 × 103/μl, 234 ± 76 × 103/μl and 251 ± 87 × 103/μl, respectively, and there was statistically significant difference between these groups. Platelet count at onset and remission of AP was statistically lower than control subjects. Conclusion Some studies in literature suggest that MPV might be a useful parameter to be used as an indicator for AP and a prognostic factor for AP, but, in this study, it was revealed that MPV values do not change at AP compared with controls. Therefore, further prospective studies investigating the factors affecting the platelet size are required to determine whether MPV has a clinical implication and for predictor value of patients with AP. Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Glycogenic acanthosis is described as benign thickening of the esophageal squamous epithelium of unknown etiology. Although its etiology is unknown, it has been reported that glycogenic acanthosis may be related to gastroesophageal reflux and hiatal hernia. The aim of the present study was to review the patients who were diagnosed with glycogenic acanthosis on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and to determine whether there is any association between glycogenic acanthosis and gastroesophageal reflux and hiatal hernia. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 504 patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy for evaluation of non-ulcer dyspepsia were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS Glycogenic acanthosis was detected in 143 (28.3%) of those 504 patients. Of the 143 patients, 82 (57.3%) were male and 61 (42.7%) were female. Patients with glycogenic acanthosis were aged 20-83 years. Gastroesophageal reflux was detected in 50 (34.9%) cases with glycogenic acanthosis, while hiatal hernia was detected in 30 (20.9%) cases. Gastroesophageal reflux was detected in 102 (28.2%) control subjects, while hiatal hernia was detected in 50 (13.8%). Hiatal hernia was significantly higher in glycogenic acanthosis patients than in controls subjects (p<0.05). Glycogenic acanthosis patients had higher gastroesophageal reflux than seen in controls subjects, but the difference between groups was not statistically significant (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest that glycogenic acanthosis is primarily an age-related disease. We demonstrated that glycogenic acanthosis may be associated with gastroesophageal reflux and hiatal hernia. Further studies are necessary to confirm these findings.
