Abstract
OBJECTIVES North Korean Refugees (NKRs) undergo defection, and this has been shown to impact their current health status in South Korea. However, little is understood about how the defection process is related to metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study regarded the defection process to be a quasi-measurement of traumatic experience and investigated whether defection was a risk factor for MetS among NKRs living in South Korea. STUDY DESIGN This cross-sectional study obtained data from the Korea University Anam Hospital in Seoul. NKRs (N = 847) voluntarily completed questionnaires and underwent at least one medical examination between October 2008 and July 2021. METHODS Multivariable logistic regression models were used to evaluate whether the number of countries transited by NKRs was associated with MetS by controlling for covariates. RESULTS The prevalence of MetS among male and female NKRs in South Korea was 12.3% and 13.3%, respectively. The highest prevalence of MetS (33.4%) was among NKRs who had transited two countries. The number of months in transit countries (mean: 49.9 ± 51.7) and period of residence in South Korea (mean: 40.9 ± 40.9 months) were also considered. NKRs who transited three countries had a higher probability of MetS (odds ratio [OR] 2.660, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.161-6.097) than those who travelled directly to South Korea. NKRs who transited three countries and had only resided in South Korea for a short period had a higher probability of MetS (OR 3.424, 95% CI 1.149-10.208) than those who have lived in South Korea for a longer period. CONCLUSIONS Considering the social vulnerability of NKRs and consequential health problems, there is an urgent need for appropriate support from the government and society.

Abstract
Denosumab is an effective antiresorptive drug commonly prescribed for the treatment of osteoporosis. However, some patients do not respond well to denosumab treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the factors underlying treatment nonresponses to denosumab in elderly patients following hip fracture. This retrospective study included 130 patients treated with denosumab after osteoporotic hip fracture between March 2017 and March 2020. The patients were categorized as denosumab nonresponders if they had a T-score <-3 that persisted between dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scans, a >3% decrease in bone mineral density (BMD), or an incident fracture on denosumab therapy. We examined the baseline characteristics associated with blunted BMD responses and compared the groups following denosumab treatment for 12 months. Of 130 patients with baseline data, 105 patients (80.8%) were considered responders. No difference in baseline vitamin D, calcium, BMI, age, gender, prior fracture history, or bisphosphonate use was observed between responders and nonresponders. A longer interval between denosumab injections was associated with suboptimal BMD response at both spine and total hip (p<0.001 and p=0.04, respectively). The overall L-BMD and H-BMD were significantly increased compared with pretreatment levels after denosumab treatment (5.7% and 2.5%, respectively). This study revealed that nonresponse was not strongly associated with certain baseline variables and it appears that the reponders and nonresponders were reasonably comparable in this study population. The results of our study highlight the importance of timely denosumab administration when using this drug for osteoporosis management. Physicians should keep these results in mind in clinical practice so that they can improve utilization of 6-month denosumab.

Abstract
With the development of wearable devices such as smartwatches, several studies have been conducted on the recognition of various human activities. Various types of data are used, e.g., acceleration data collected using an inertial measurement unit sensor. Most scholars segmented the entire timeseries data with a fixed window size before performing recognition. However, this approach has limitations in performance because the execution time of the human activity is usually unknown. Therefore, there have been many attempts to solve this problem through the method of activity recognition by sliding the classification window along the time axis. In this study, we propose a method for classifying all frames rather than a window-based recognition method. For implementation, features extracted using multiple convolutional neural networks with different kernel sizes were fused and used. In addition, similar to the convolutional block attention module, an attention layer to each channel and spatial level is applied to improve the model recognition performance. To verify the performance of the proposed model and prove the effectiveness of the proposed method on human activity recognition, evaluation experiments were performed. For comparison, models using various basic deep learning modules and models, in which all frames were classified for recognizing a specific wave in electrocardiography data were applied. As a result, the proposed model reported the best F1-score (over 0.9) for all kinds of target activities compared to other deep learning-based recognition models. Further, for the improvement verification of the proposed CEF method, the proposed method was compared with three types of SW method. As a result, the proposed method reported the 0.154 higher F1-score than SW. In the case of the designed model, the F1-score was higher as much as 0.184.

Abstract
Skeleton data, which is often used in the HCI field, is a data structure that can efficiently express human poses and gestures because it consists of 3D positions of joints. The advancement of RGB-D sensors, such as Kinect sensors, enabled the easy capture of skeleton data from depth or RGB images. However, when tracking a target with a single sensor, there is an occlusion problem causing the quality of invisible joints to be randomly degraded. As a result, multiple sensors should be used to reliably track a target in all directions over a wide range. In this paper, we proposed a new method for combining multiple inaccurate skeleton data sets obtained from multiple sensors that capture a target from different angles into a single accurate skeleton data. The proposed algorithm uses density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) to prevent noise-added inaccurate joint candidates from participating in the merging process. After merging with the inlier candidates, we used Kalman filter to denoise the tremble error of the joint's movement. We evaluated the proposed algorithm's performance using the best view as the ground truth. In addition, the results of different sizes for the DBSCAN searching area were analyzed. By applying the proposed algorithm, the joint position accuracy of the merged skeleton improved as the number of sensors increased. Furthermore, highest performance was shown when the searching area of DBSCAN was 10 cm.

Abstract
BACKGROUND No effective treatment exists for anterior resection syndrome (ARS) following sphincter-saving surgery for rectal cancer. This RCT assessed the safety and efficacy of a 5-HT3 receptor antagonist, ramosetron, for ARS. METHODS A single-centre, randomized, controlled, open-label, parallel group trial was conducted. Male patients with ARS 1 month after rectal cancer surgery or ileostomy reversal were enrolled and randomly assigned (1 : 1) to 5 μg of ramosetron (Irribow®) daily or conservative treatment for 4 weeks. Low ARS (LARS) score was calculated after randomization and 4 weeks after treatment. The study was designed as a superiority test with a primary endpoint of the proportion of patients with major LARS between the groups. Primary outcome analysis was based on the modified intention-to-treat population. Safety was assessed by monitoring adverse events during the study. RESULTS : A total of 100 patients were randomized to the ramosetron (49 patients) or conservative treatment group (51 patients). Two patients were excluded, and 48 and 50 patients were analysed in the ramosetron and control groups, respectively. The proportion of major LARS after 4 weeks was 58 per cent (28 of 48 patients) in the ramosetron group versus 82 per cent (41 of 50 patients) in the control group, with a difference of 23.7 per cent (95 per cent c.i. 5.58 to 39.98, P = 0.011). There were minor adverse events in five patients, which were hard stool, frequent stool or anal pain. These were not different between the two groups. There were no serious adverse events. CONCLUSION : Ramosetron could be safe and feasible for male patients with ARS. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER NCT02869984 (http://www.clinicaltrials.gov).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Three-weekly docetaxel causes a high rate of febrile neutropenia, especially in the Asian population. Two-weekly docetaxel has been shown to reduce rate of febrile neutropenia in castrate-resistant prostate cancer patients. We conducted a preliminary study to investigate the safety of two-weekly docetaxel in advanced breast cancer patients. METHODS We recruited 10 patients with advanced breast cancer with ECOG (Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group) performance status score of zero to two, who needed chemotherapy in the first or second-line setting to receive two-weekly docetaxel for 8 cycles. The primary endpoint was safety and secondary endpoints were response rate and progression free survival. RESULTS The most reported adverse events were haematological (anaemia 100% and neutropenia 90%). The febrile neutropenia rate was 10%. The overall response rate was 20%. The median progression free survival was 5.0 months. CONCLUSION Two-weekly docetaxel may be a reasonable alternative treatment regimen for patients with advanced breast cancer in the first or second-line setting. This regimen is yet to be compared with standard 3-weekly schedule in a phase 3 randomised clinical trial.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Physical frailty and impaired executive function of the brain show similar pathophysiology. Both of these factors lead to dysfunction of neuromuscular and abilities in elderly. High-speed power training (HSPT) has been determined to have positive effects on neuromuscular function and gait performance, as well as executive function in the elderly. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 8-week HSPT on neuromuscular, gait and executive functions in frail elderly with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS We performed a randomized controlled trial of frail elderly from community and medical center in republic of Korea. Forty-two physically frail elderly with MCI were randomly allocated to control (n=22, age=74.22±4.46) and intervention groups (n=18, age=73.77±4.64). The intervention group was subjected to HSPT, 3 times weekly for 8 weeks. MEASUREMENTS Isometric contraction of knee extension and flexion with electromyography (EMG) was measured to determine the neuromuscular function such as knee extensor strength, rate of torque development, movement time, pre-motor time, motor time, rate of EMG rise, and hamstrings antagonist co-activation. Additionally, the 4.44-meter gait and timed up-and-go (TUG) test were administered to assess gait performance. A frontal assessment battery was measured in this study. RESULTS The 8-week HSPT regimen improved the knee extensor strength from 1.13±0.08 to 1.25±0.07 (p<0.05), the 200-ms RTD from 3.01±0.3 to 3.55±0.24 (p<0.05) and the rate of EMG rise from 166.48±13.31 to 197.94±11.51 (p<0.05), whereas the movement time and motor time were statistically decreased from 921.69±40.10 to 799.51±72.84, and 271.40±19.29 to 181.15±38.08 (p<0.05), respectively. The 4.44-m gait speed and TUG significantly decreased from 6.39±0.25 to 5.5±0.24, and 11.05±0.53 to 9.17±0.43 respectively (p<0.05). CONCLUSION The findings of this study suggest the favorable effects of 8-week HSPT on the neuromuscular function and the gait performance in the frail elderly with MCI without increase in the executive function.

Abstract
Gait is an important indicator for specific diseases. Abnormal gait patterns are caused by various factors such as physical, neurological, and sensory problems. If it is possible to recognize abnormal gait patterns in the early stage of the related disease, patients can receive proper treatment early and prevent secondary accidents such as falls caused by unbalanced gait. In this paper, we propose a gait recognition system that can recognize 5 abnormal gait patterns. Our system using 3D joint information obtained by using multiple Kinect v2 sensors and RNN-LSTM. In particular, abnormal gaits caused by physical problems such as injury, weakness of muscle, and joint problems are targeted for recognition. The purpose of this paper is to find optimal condition for gait recognition when using the multiple Kinect v2 sensors. Experiments were conducted by comparing the test accuracies on 14 combinations of human joint. Through this experiment, we selected optimal joints to show outstanding results so that our gait recognition model performs optimally. Results show that Ankles, Wrists, and the Head are the most influential joints on RNN-LSTM model. We applied 25-joint information of the human body to recognize gait patterns and achieved an accuracy over 97%.

Abstract
Abstract
Endoscopic breast surgery was expected to be an adequate technique to complete cancer clearance and preservation of the patient's body image. However, this technique has limitations including incomplete internal movements and unstable vision of a two dimensional camera due to inflexible endoscopic instruments especially during the skin flap formation. High resolution, ten-fold image magnification, and three-dimensional optics of robotic surgery help overcome the limitations of endoscopic surgery, and thus robotic surgery has been adopted in a wide range of intracorporeal procedures including breast surgery. However, few studies have evaluated feasibility and safety of robotic assisted nipple sparing mastectomy (RANSM) and immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) for the treatment of breast cancer. There were not any investigation to assess patients' satisfaction of cosmetic effect after performing RANSM and IBR. This study is aim to verify the feasibility and the safety of RANSM and IBR and to analyze cosmetic effect of the procedure and satisfaction of patients. The target number of enrollments is 15 patients. Patients who are diagnosed with early breast cancer or BRCA 1/2 mutation carriers are enrolled. Female patients over 20 years old who are candidates to preserve nipple areolar complex and considered to perform reconstruction with implants are prospectively collected. Written informed consents are mandatory. Patients who are considered the high possibility of postoperative radiation therapy according to preoperative stage are not included in this study. We exclude patients who want to undergo other methods of breast reconstruction than breast reconstruction with implants. Patients will undergo RANSM and IBR through a single axillary skin incision simultaneously. Regular follow-up at 1 month and 6 months after RANSM and IBR is scheduled to record recovery of a patient, amount of a drain, date of drain removal, and postoperative complications. Patient satisfaction questionnaire will be completed on the last follow-up day. To evaluate the safety of robotic assisted surgery, the oncologic safety (margin status of nipple areolar complex), postoperative recovery of a patient, and postoperative complications are investigated. We compare preoperative and postoperative 6 month photographs of patients and estimate the surgical outcome by objective indicators to evaluate the cosmetic grading by plastic surgeons. Patients' satisfaction are assessed by questionnaire (BREAST-Q) at the 6-month visit.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Spinal epidural arteriovenous fistulas are rare vascular malformations. We present 13 patients with spinal epidural arteriovenous fistulas, noting the various presenting symptom patterns, imaging findings related to bone involvement, and outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Among 111 patients with spinal vascular malformations in the institutional data base from 1993 to 2017, thirteen patients (11.7%) had spinal epidural arteriovenous fistulas. We evaluated presenting symptoms and imaging findings, including bone involvement and mode of treatment. To assess the treatment outcome, we compared initial and follow-up clinical status using the modified Aminoff and Logue Scale of Disability and the modified Rankin Scale. RESULTS The presenting symptoms were lower back pain (n = 2), radiculopathy (n = 5), and myelopathy (n = 7). There is overlap of symptoms in 1 patient (No. 11). Distribution of spinal epidural arteriovenous fistulas was cervical (n = 3), thoracic (n = 2), lumbar (n = 6), and sacral (n = 2). Intradural venous reflux was identified in 7 patients with congestive venous myelopathy. The fistulas were successfully treated in all patients who underwent treatment (endovascular embolization, n = 10; operation, n = 1) except 2 patients who refused treatment due to tolerable symptoms. Transarterial glue (n = 7) was used in nonosseous types; and transvenous coils (n = 3), in osseous type. After 19 months of median follow-up, the patients showed symptom improvement after treatment. CONCLUSIONS Although presenting symptoms were diverse, myelopathy caused by intradural venous reflux was the main target of treatment. Endovascular treatment was considered via an arterial approach in nonosseous types and via a venous approach in osseous types.

Abstract
Ameloblastoma treatment varies based on the clinical, histopathologic, and radiographic characteristics. Aggressive surgical treatments, such as marginal or segmental resection, have traditionally been implemented, but some conservative surgical methods are also being introduced, including decompression, enucleation, or curettage. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possibility of applying these conservative surgical treatments to ameloblastoma and to analyze the prognosis of the procedures and their healing aspects. Among all patients who visited our clinic (Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Kyung Hee University Dental Hospital at Gangdong) from 2009 to 2017, three who had undergone conservative surgery were recruited. One of these three patients underwent both excision of the lesion and an iliac bone graft during the same procedure. In the other two patients, due to the size of the lesion, decompression was performed to reduce the size of the lesion, and then conservative surgical treatments followed. As shown in the cases of this study, patients were only treated with conservative surgical methods, such as decompression or enucleation. During the follow-up period, there were no recurrences. In conclusion, the use of conservative surgical treatment in ameloblastoma can be a reliable, safe, and successful method.

Abstract
Systemic drug delivery systems (SDDSs) for thyroid cancer treatment are associated with serious side effects including nausea, anorexia, and hair loss as a result of damage to normal tissues. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of a local DDS (LDDS) based on visible light-cured glycol chitosan (GC) hydrogel and doxorubicin⋅hydrochloride (DOX⋅HCl), called GC10/DOX, on thyroid cancer treatment in vivo. Visible light irradiation increased the storage modulus and swelling ratio of the GC10/DOX hydrogel precursor. The release of DOX⋅HCl from GC10/DOX exhibited two unique patterns comprising an initial burst within 18 hours, followed by a controlled and sustained release thereafter. In vitro cell viability testing showed that GC10/DOX had a greater antitumor effect than free DOX⋅HCl and GC10 hydrogel controls. In vivo, local injection of GC10/DOX near tumor tissue led to a superior antitumor effect compared with controls consisting of free DOX⋅HCl intravenously injected to the tail vein of thyroid cancer-bearing mouse and GC10 hydrogel subcutaneously injected near the tumor. Altogether, our results suggest that GC10/DOX may have clinical potential for thyroid cancer treatment.

Abstract
Bone tissue engineering scaffolds offer the merits of minimal invasion as well as localized and controlled biomolecule release to targeted sites. In this study, we prepared injectable hydrogel systems based on visible light-cured glycol chitosan (GC) hydrogels containing bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) and/or transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-β1) as scaffolds for bone formation in vitro and in vivo. The hydrogels were characterized by storage modulus, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and swelling ratio analyses. The developed hydrogel systems showed controlled releases of growth factors in a sustained manner for 30 days. In vitro and in vivo studies revealed that growth factor-loaded GC hydrogels have no cytotoxicity against MC3T3-E1 osteoblast cell line, improved mRNA expressions of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), type I collagen (COL 1) and osteocalcin (OCN), and increased bone volume (BV) and bone mineral density (BMD) in tibia defect sites. Moreover, GC hydrogel containing BMP-2 (10 ng) and TGF-β1 (10 ng) (GC/BMP-2/TGF-β1-10 ng) showed greater bone formation abilities than that containing BMP-2 (5 ng) and TGF-β1 (5 ng) (GC/BMP-2/TGF-β1-5 ng) in vitro and in vivo. Consequently, the injectable GC/BMP-2/TGF-β1-10 ng hydrogel may have clinical potential for dental or orthopedic applications.

Abstract
Bisphosphonates are generally used as therapeutic agents for bone diseases. However, previous reports on bisphosphonates-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) demonstrated that inflammation triggers and worsens the disease. Recently, polydeoxynucleotide (PDRN), an A2A receptor agonist, has been suggested for the treatment of various diseases and broadly studied for its anti-inflammatory effect. The present study aimed to measure the effect of PDRN on macrophage cells treated with zoledronic acid (ZA) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Macrophage cells were cultured with ZA for 24 h, following which they were stimulated with LPS in the presence or absence of varying concentrations of PDRN for 24 h. The cell viability and nitric oxide (NO) production of the cells were analyzed. In addition, protein expression levels were quantified by western blotting. Cell viability was compromised and NO was overexpressed by ZA and LPS stimulation. However, under ZA and LPS stimulation cell viability was enhanced, and NO production, and inducible nitric oxide synthase, interleukin (IL)-1β, -6, and tumor necrosis factor-α overexpression were suppressed on exposure to PDRN. A2A receptor and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression levels increased following PDRN treatment. These results indicate that PDRN treatment of macrophages inhibits the inflammatory cytokines induced by ZA and LPS stimulation. It was hypothesized that the inflammatory cytokines were inhibited through A2A activation by PDRN. In addition, increased VEGF expression may contribute to increased vascularization and subsequently improve the pathological condition in BRONJ. As inflammation and LPS may stimulate the occurrence of BRONJ, the present study postulated that PDRN is possibly a candidate for the therapeutic management of BRONJ by decreasing inflammation and increasing vascularization.

Abstract
The most ideal implant models in the dental and orthopedic fields to minimize the failure rate of implantation involve the improvement of osseointegration with host bone. Therefore, a focus of this study is the preparation of surface-modified titanium (Ti) samples of disc and screw types using dexamethasone (DEX) and/or growth and differentiation factor-5 (GDF-5), as well as the evaluation of their efficacies on bone formation in vitro and in vivo. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle measurement were used to evaluate the surface chemical composition, surface morphology and wettability, respectively. The results showed that implant surfaces were successfully modified with DEX and/or GDF-5, and had rough surfaces along with hydrophilicity. DEX, GDF-5 or DEX/GDF-5 on the surface-modified samples were rapidly released within one day and released for 28 days in a sustained manner. The proliferation and bone formation of MC3T3-E1 cells cultured on pristine and surface-modified implants in vitro were examined by cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay, as well as the measurements of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and calcium deposition, respectively. MC3T3-E1 cells cultured on DEX/GDF-5–Ti showed noticeable ALP activity and calcium deposition in vitro. Active bone formation and strong osseointegration occurred at the interface between DEX/GDF-5–Ti and host bone, as evaluated by micro computed-tomography (micro CT) analysis. Surface modification using DEX/GDF-5 could be a good method for advanced implants for orthopaedic and dental applications.

Abstract
Fluoride has been widely used for the prevention of dental caries since the mid-20th century. The aim of this study was to investigate the chronologic trends in studies on fluoride mechanisms of action against dental caries during the years 1950 to 2015. To this aim, queries such as "fluoride," "fluoride and demineralization," "fluoride and remineralization," "fluoride and (plaque or biofilms)," and "fluoride and (bacteria or microbials)" were submitted to PubMed to collect research article information, including titles, abstracts, publication dates, author affiliations, and publication journals. The article information that PubMed produced was then collected by an automatic web crawler and examined through informetrics and linguistic analyses. We found that the number of articles concerned with fluoride mechanisms of action against dental caries was 6,903 and gradually increased over time during the years 1950 to 2015. They were published by 1,136 journals-most notably, Caries Research and Journal of Dental Research. Of the articles published, those related to bacteria/microbials had a higher percentage (44%) than those dealing with plaque/biofilms, demineralization, and remineralization. With regard to the geographic distribution of authors, Europe and North America accounted for 65% of the articles during the years 1987 to 2015, although the number of authors in Asia sharply increased in recent years. Among the fluoride compounds, NaF was mentioned more frequently than SnF2, Na2PO3F, amine fluoride, and acidulated phosphate fluoride during the years 1986 to 2015. Water fluoridation received the most attention among the various fluoride application methods (toothpastes, mouthwashes, fluoride varnishes, and fluoride gels) during the same period. These results, obtained from employing informetrics and linguistic analyses, suggest that in studies on fluoride mechanisms of action, 1) the unbalanced geographic distribution of articles and 2) the heavy concentration of articles on particular fluoride compounds and application methods should be overcome in future research.

Abstract
PurposeTo identify prognostic factors in patients referred with endophthalmitis after cataract surgery, and to evaluate the efficacy of primary vitrectomy as an initial management.MethodsOver an eight-year study period, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 164 patients who were referred with endophthalmitis following cataract surgery. Treatment generally conformed to standard guidelines, although primary vitrectomy was performed in several eyes with a visual acuity of hand motion or better, depending on the patient's status. Using multivariate analysis, we analyzed outcomes to determine the effect on final visual outcome.ResultsA final visual acuity of ≥20/40 was achieved in 92/164 (56.1%) cases after treatment. Bacterial cultures showed bacterial growth in 89/164 cases (54.3%). Among the various baseline characteristics, old age (P=0.028), poor visual acuity at presentation (P=0.004), gram-negative bacterial infection (P=0.030), and short time between cataract surgery and signs of endophthalmitis (P=0.021) were associated with poor visual outcome. The visual outcome showed no significant difference, in terms of initial treatment feature, between the primary vitrectomy with intraocular antibiotics injection (IOAI) and IOAI-only groups. However, reintervention was significantly less frequent in the primary vitrectomy group than in the IOAI group (12.5 and 32.7%, respectively; P=0.002).ConclusionOld age, poor visual acuity at presentation, type of cultured organism (gram-negative bacteria), and early onset of endophthalmitis after cataract surgery were significantly related to poor visual outcome after endophthalmitis treatment. Primary vitrectomy may decrease the need for reintervention to control infection, although the treatment showed no benefits with regard to visual outcome.

Abstract
In this study we report on the effectiveness of click chemistry-enhanced zirconium dioxide (ZrO2-3) for the immobilization of biomolecules, and the enhancement of osteoblastic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells by bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) immobilized on ZrO2-6. The surfaces of ZrO2-1 through 6 were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), static contact angles, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements. The results from these tests indicated that ZrO2-1 was successfully surface-modified via click chemistry (ZrO2-3). Through quantitative analysis of heparin immobilized on ZrO2-5, we found that ZrO2-3 was a useful tool for immobilizing biomolecules such as heparin. Release tests of BMP-2 from ZrO2-6 showed well-controlled release kinetics over a period of 28 days. MC3T3-E1 cell proliferation tests indicated that ZrO2-6 was highly biocompatible with these cells. Through In Vitro tests such as alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, calcium deposition, and real-time polymerase chain reaction (real-time PCR), we found that ZrO2-6 was a useful tool for enhancing osteoblastic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells.

Abstract
In this study, we prepared human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (hBMP-2)/human growth and differentiation factor-5 (hGDF-5)-coated titanium (Ti) disc and screw types for controlled release of the growth factors (GFs). The two growth factors were coated onto Ti with a smooth surface using their specific interaction with heparin, because they have heparin binding sites in their molecular structures. Efficacy of the two growth factor-coated Ti for enhancement of bone formation and osseointegration was compared to pristine Ti, and hBMP-2- and hGDF-5-coated Ti in vivo. The surface chemical composition, surface morphology, and wettability characteristics of the metal samples were determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and contact angle measurement, respectively. The initial burst of hBMP-2, hGDF-5, and their combination, occurred within one day of the release study, resulting in 12.5%, 4.5%, and 13.5%/3.2%, and then there was a sustained, even release of these two growth factors from the coated metal for 30 days. In vitro tests revealed that MC3T3-E1 cells cultured on the two growth factor-coated Ti had a higher proliferation rate and a higher activity for alkaline phosphatase (ALP), which led to a larger amount of calcium deposition and larger expressions of type I collagen (COL 1), ALP, and osteocalcin (OCN) mRNAs. In vivo animal tests using ten white New Zealand rabbits showed that the two growth factor-coated Ti enhanced bone formation and osseointegration at the interface between the implants and host bone. In addition, histological evaluation showed that bone remodeling, including bone formation by osteoblasts and bone resorption by osteoclasts, actively occurred between the two growth factor-coated Ti and host bone. Consequently, it is suggested that Ti surface modification with the combination of hBMP-2 and hGDF-5 for the two growth factor-coated Ti implants can improve the clinical properties of implants for orthopedic and dental applications.

Abstract
Simvastatin (SIM) accelerates new bone formation both in vitro and In Vivo by enhancing the expression of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2). In this study, we evaluated the effect of water-solubility of SIM on new bone formation by preparing two types of supramolecular hydrogels: pseudopolyrotaxanes (PPRXs) based on metoxy polyethyleneglycol-grafted hyaluronic acid (MPEG-g-HA) and α-cyclodextrin (α-CD) containing water-soluble hydroxypropyl β-cyclodextrin/simvastatin inclusion complex (HP-β-CD-ic-SIM; MPEG-g-HA/α-CD/HP-β-CD-ic-SIM) or only SIM (MPEG-g-HA/α-CD/SIM). As compared to MPEG-g- HA/α-CD/SIM, SIM was more rapidly released from MPEG-g-HA/α-CD/HP-β-CD-ic-SIM in a sustained manner owing to increased water-solubility. New bone actively formed at the calvarial defect site in a rabbit model 4 weeks after implantation, as examined by micro computed tomography (micro CT), hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining, and Goldner’s trichrome staining. The results showed that the water-solubility of SIM plays a significant role in enhancing new bone formation in vivo.

Abstract
In the present study, we evaluated the potential of poly-l-lysine/hyaluronic acid (HA/PLL) hydrogels containing curcumin (CUR) and bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) as bone tissue regeneration scaffolds. Hydrogels HP-1˜2 were formed by amide bonds via the condensation reactions between 0.02 μmol HA and 0.06–0.12 μmol poly-l-lysine · hydrobromide (PLL · HBr). Physical, chemical, and thermal analyses revealed that the amount of PLL · HBr significantly influenced hydrogel properties. Based on an In Vitro MG-63 cell proliferation test, HP-1˜2 were cytocompatible, and all hydrogels containing different amounts of CUR and BMP-2, except for HA0.02/PLL0.06/CUR20/BMP-2100 (HPCB-4), resulted in cell proliferation above 80%. An In Vitro release test showed that CUR and BMP-2 were consistently released from HA0.02/PLL0.06/CUR15 (HPC), HA0.02/PLL0.06/BMP-2100 (HPB), HA0.02/PLL0.06/CUR15/BMP-210 , 50 , or 100 (HPCB-1˜3), and HA0.02/PLL0.06/CUR10 or 20/BMP-2100 (HPCB-4˜5) for 7 and 28 days, respectively. In Vitro ALP activity and calcium deposition and In Vivo micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) tests demonstrated the potential application of HPCB-3 as bone tissue regeneration scaffolds, suggesting that bone tissue regeneration can be optimized by controlling the amounts of CUR and BMP-2.

Abstract
Background Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are defined as “statements that are scientifically reviewed about evidence and systematically developed to assist in the doctors' and patients' decision making in certain clinical situations.” This recommendation aims to promote good clinical practice for the provision of safe and effective practices of conscious sedation in dentistry. Methods The development of this clinical practice guideline was conducted by performing a systematic search of the literature for evidence-based CPGs. Existing guidelines, relevant systematic reviews, policy documents, legislation, or other recommendations were reviewed and appraised. To supplement this information, key questions were formulated by the Guideline Development Group and used as the basis for designing systematic literature search strategies to identify literature that may address these questions. Guideline documents were evaluated through a review of domestic and international databases for the development of a renewing of existing conscious sedation guidelines for dentistry. Clinical practice guidelines were critically appraised for their methodologies using Appraisal of guidelines for research and evaluation (AGREE) II. Results A total of 12 existing CPGs were included and 13 recommendations were made in a range of general, adult, and pediatric areas. Conclusion The clinical practice guidelines for conscious sedation will be reviewed in 5 years' time for further updates to reflect significant changes in the field.

Abstract
There are many options in the treatment of heavily pretreated metastatic breast cancer however none of the therapeutic agents have shown promising improvement of survival with good toxicity profile. Eribulin is a novel nontaxane microtubule dynamics inhibitor. Two recent clinical trial showed that Eribulin improves progression-free and overall survival in this subset of patients. We report our experience with using Eribulin in five patients with metastatic breast cancer either in second or third-line setting, in our centre.

Abstract
A 12-week trial with 120 [(Landrace×Yorkshire)×Duroc] pigs (45.65 ± 1.93 kg) was conducted to evaluate the effects of Astragalus membranaceus, Codonopsis pilosula and allicin mixture (HM) supplementation on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, faecal microbial shedding, immune response and meat quality in finishing pigs. Pigs were allocated to one of three treatments with 0, 0.025% (HM1) and 0.05% (HM2) HM supplementation in a randomized complete block design according to sex and BW. Each treatment contained 10 replications with four pigs (two barrows and two gilts) per pen. Dietary HM resulted in a higher G:F (p < 0.05) than CON group during weeks 7 to 12 and the overall periods. Pigs fed HM2 diet had higher ADG than pigs fed CON diet. Pigs fed HM2 supplementation diet led to a higher (p < 0.05) apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of dry matter (DM) and gross energy (GE) than pigs fed CON diet at week 6, while the supplementation of HM led to a higher (p < 0.05) ATTD of DM and GE than pigs fed CON diet at week 12. The faecal E. coli counts were reduced, and Lactobacillus counts were increased by increasing HM supplementation (p < 0.05). Pigs fed HM1 diet had higher (p < 0.05) WBC concentration than those fed CON and HM2 diets at week 6. Pigs fed HM-supplemented diet had higher (p < 0.05) IgG and IgA concentrations than those fed CON diet at week 12. Pigs fed HM diet noted better (p < 0.05) meat colour and redness value than pigs fed CON diet. Pig fed HM2 reduced (p < 0.05) the lightness value compared with CON group. In conclusion, dietary HM supplementation exerted beneficial effects on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, intestinal microbial balance (increased Lactobacillus counts and decreased E. coli counts), immune response and meat quality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Magnetic biomaterials have recently gained great attention due to their some intriguing cell and tissue responses. However, little attention has been given to the fields of dental tissue regeneration. In this sense, we aim to investigate the effects of magnetic nanofiber scaffolds on the human dental pulp cell (HDPC) behaviors and to elucidate the underlying signaling mechanisms in the events. METHODS Magnetic nanofiber scaffolds incorporating magnetic nanoparticles at varying contents were prepared into nanofibrous matrices to cultivate cells. Cell growth by MTS assay, odontoblastic differentiation by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, mineralization, and the mRNA expression of differentiation-related genes of HDPCs, in vitro angiogenesis by migration and capillary tube formation in endothelial cells on the conditioned medium obtained from HDPSCs in the presence or absence of scaffolds. Western blot analysis and confocal immunofluorescene were used to asses signaling pathways. RESULTS The growth of HDPCs was significantly enhanced on the magnetic scaffolds with respect to the non-magnetic counterpart. The odontogenic differentiation of cells was significantly up-regulated by the culture with magnetic scaffolds. Furthermore, the magnetic scaffolds promoted the HDPC-induced angiogenesis of endothelial cells. The expression of signaling molecules, Wnt3a, phosphorylated GSK-3β and nuclear β-catenin, was substantially stimulated by the magnetic scaffolds; in parallel, the MAPK and NF-κB were highly activated when cultured on the magnetic nanofiber scaffolds. SIGNIFICANCE This study is the first to demonstrate that magnetic nanofiber scaffolds stimulate HDPCs in the events of growth, odontogenic differentiation, and pro-angiogenesis, and the findings imply the novel scaffolds can be potentially useful as dentin-pulp regenerative matrices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Decreased bone mineral density (BMD) in patients with obstructive lung disease (OLD) is well known. However, the relationship between BMD and asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) overlap syndrome (ACOS) is not yet known. OBJECTIVE To determine the relationship between ACOS and decreased BMD. DESIGN We evaluated the relationship between OLD phenotypes and decreased BMD in subjects from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey IV and V (2008-2011). Data on 979 subjects who underwent spirometry and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry were included in the study. RESULTS Patients with ACOS had lower femur, femur neck and lumbar T-scores than those with COPD (P = 0.048, P = 0.001 and P = 0.002, respectively). On multivariate logistic regression analysis, the ACOS group had a two-fold higher risk of developing osteopenia and low BMD compared to the COPD group (OR 1.960, 95%CI 1.011-3.800, P = 0.046; OR 1.974, 95%CI 1.019-3.824, P = 0.044). CONCLUSION The rate of bone loss differed among subjects with the asthma, COPD and ACOS OLD phenotypes. In particular, patients with ACOS had a higher risk of developing osteopenia and low BMD than those with COPD.

Abstract
A growing body of evidence implicates the noncanonical NF-κB pathway as a key driver of glioma invasiveness and a major factor underlying poor patient prognoses. Here, we show that NF-κB-inducing kinase (NIK/MAP3K14), a critical upstream regulator of the noncanonical NF-κB pathway, is both necessary and sufficient for cell-intrinsic invasion, as well as invasion induced by the cytokine TWEAK, which is strongly associated with tumor pathogenicity. NIK promotes dramatic alterations in glioma cell morphology that are characterized by extensive membrane branching and elongated pseudopodial protrusions. Correspondingly, NIK increases the phosphorylation, enzymatic activity and pseudopodial localization of membrane type-1 matrix metalloproteinase (MT1-MMP/MMP14), which is associated with enhanced tumor cell invasion of three-dimensional collagen matrices. Moreover, NIK regulates MT1-MMP activity in cells lacking the canonical NF-κB p65 and cRel proteins. Finally, increased expression of NIK is associated with elevated MT1-MMP phosphorylation in orthotopic xenografts and co-expression of NIK and MT1-MMP in human tumors is associated with poor glioma patient survival. These data reveal a novel role of NIK to enhance pseudopodia formation, MT1-MMP enzymatic activity and tumor cell invasion independently of p65. Collectively, our findings underscore the therapeutic potential of approaches targeting NIK in highly invasive tumors.

Abstract
Recently, the application of nanostructured materials in the field of tissue engineering has garnered attention to mediate treatment and regeneration of bone defects. In this study, poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA)/gelatin (PG) fibrous scaffolds are fabricated and β-cyclodextrin (βCD) grafted nano-hydroxyapatite (HAp) is coated onto the fibrous scaffold surface via an interaction between βCD and adamantane. Simvastatin (SIM), which is known to promote osteoblast viability and differentiation, is loaded into the remaining βCD. The specimen morphologies are characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The release profile of SIM from the drug loaded scaffold is also evaluated. In vitro proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of human adipose derived stem cells on SIM/HAp coated PG composite scaffolds is characterized by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, mineralization (Alizarin Red S staining), and real time Polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The scaffolds are then implanted into rabbit calvarial defects and analyzed by microcomputed tomography for bone formation after four and eight weeks. These results demonstrate that SIM loaded PLLA/gelatin/HAp-(βCD) scaffolds promote significantly higher ALP activity, mineralization, osteogenic gene expression, and bone regeneration than control scaffolds. This suggests the potential application of this material toward bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The definition of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) is "statements that are systematically developed to assist in the doctors' and patients' decision-making in certain situations." This study aims to establish the concept of evidence-based CPGs and investigate the development status to seek measures to apply evidence-based methods to CPG development for dental sedation in Korea. METHODS The study conducted systematic searching methods based on evidence-based CPGs. Articles published between 1995 to 2015 were searched on a Korean database and the international database PubMed. The search was based on keywords related to four subjects (dentistry, clinical practice, guideline, recommendation). Two authors independently reviewed the searched articles to determine their analysis inclusion and the convergence stages, and to arrive at a conclusion through discussion. RESULTS A total of 65 Korean CPGs were included. There were 51 medical guidelines, of which seven were dental and seven were Oriental medicine. CONCLUSIONS As a basic direction for the development of evidence-based CPGs, this work suggests the following: increased awareness; consensus on the need to supply evidence-based development methods; education, computerization, and systematic observation of evidence-based CPG development methods; continuous research development and distribution of CPGs; and creation of a database for Korean clinical dentistry practice outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the combined effects of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and human placental extract (HPE) on cell growth, differentiation and in vitro angiogenesis of human dental pulp cells (HDPCs) and to identify underlying signal transduction mechanisms. In vivo dental pulp responses in rats for a pulp-capping agent were examined. MATERIALS AND METHODS MTS assay. ALP activity test, alizarin red S staining and RT-PCR for marker genes were carried out to evaluate cell growth and differentiation. HUVEC migration, mRNA expression and capillary tube formation were measured to evaluate angiogenesis. Signal transduction was analysed using Western blotting and confocal microscopy. The pulps of rat maxillary first molars were exposed and capped with either MTA or MTA plus HPE. Histologic observation and scoring were performed. RESULTS Compared to treatment of HDPCs with either HPE or MTA alone, the combination of HPE and MTA increased cell growth, ALP activity, mineralized nodules and expression of marker mRNAs. Combination HPE and MTA increased migration, capillary tube formation and angiogenic gene expression compared with MTA alone. Activation of Akt, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), p38, JNK and ERK MAPK, Akt, and NF-κB were significantly increased by combining HPE and MTA compared with MTA alone. Pulp capping with MTA plus HPE in rats showed superior dentin bridge formation, odontoblastic layers and dentinal tubules and lower inflammatory cell response, compared to the MTA alone group. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates for the first time that the use of MTA with HPE promotes cell growth, differentiation and angiogenesis in HDPCs, which were associated with mTOR, MAPK and NF-κB pathways. Direct pulp capping with HPE plus MTA showed superior results when compared with MTA alone. Thus, the combination of MTA and HPE may be useful for regenerative endodontics.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to establish a proper sedative protocol of dexmedetomidine for outpatients. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study compared compare patients' pain, satisfaction, adverse events, and sedation depth during extraction of third molars using a sedative protocol of intravenous (IV; 1.0 μg/kg) versus intranasal (IN; 1.5 μg/kg) administration of dexmedetomidine. In total, 240 patients were randomized, 160 patients received dexmedetomidine, and data, including the amount of agent used, visual analog scale (VAS) pain score, adverse events, VAS score of patient satisfaction, and bispectral index, were recorded. RESULTS Patients in the dexmedetomidine groups reported lower VAS pain scores and higher VAS satisfaction scores than patients in the local anesthesia group. There were no statistically meaningful differences between dexmedetomidine groups. Sedation with the IV route was slightly deeper than with the IN route. However, there were no statistically meaningful differences. CONCLUSION IN or IV administration of dexmedetomidine is recommended as an effective, safe, and competent protocol in outpatient sedative surgeries.

Abstract
Zirconia (Zr) is also known as a biocompatible material with favorable mechanical properties as well as low plaque adhesion. In this study, we examined the efficacy of Zr coated with growth and differentiation factor-5 (GDF-5) bonded via click reaction as a substrate to support osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells. Pristine and surface-modified Zr surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), resulting that GDF-5 was successfully coated to the pristine Zr surface. GDF-5 coated to Zr surfaces was released for 28 days in a sustained manner. New bone formation onto GDF-5 coated Zr (Zr/GDF-5) surface was confirmed by in vitro test including cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase activity and calcium deposition assays, and in vivo test including real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assay including osterix (OSX), runt-related transcription factor 2 (Runx 2), COL 1 (type I collagen) and osteocalcin (OC). Cell proliferation, alkaline phosphatase activity, and calcium deposition of MC3T3- E1 cells were significantly enhanced when the cells were cultured on Zr/GDF-5. Additionally, the results of qPCR revealed that genes related with osteogenic differentiation were up regulated when the cells were cultured on Zr/GDF-5. Our findings demonstrate that Zr/GDF-5 could be used as a material for enhancing the efficacy of osteogenic differentiation.

Abstract
Abstract
In order to identify novel fusion transcripts in colorectal cancer, we carried out paired-end RNA sequencing in 28 human colorectal cancer cell lines. Fusion transcript candidates were identified using ChimeraScan and FusionMap tools. We obtained 1380 candidates having 4 or more read counts and spanning reads. Among the candidates, we selected 27 candidates for validation which harbors genes related to the Wnt signaling pathway or kinases according to KEGG or DAVID. After the targeted gene filtering step, validation using RT-PCR with fusion specific primers finally resulted in 2 intra- and 1 inter-fusion transcripts. Intra-fusion transcripts were NFATC3-PLA2G15 and AKAP13-PDE8A and inter-fusion transcript was KRT8-PKM2 each identified in colo-320, SW-480 and SNU-1235, respectively. The fusion junctions were confirmed by Sanger sequencing. NFATC3-PLA2G15 fusion transcripts consisted of exon 1-9 of NFATC3 (nuclear factor of activated T-cells, cytoplasmic 3) gene and exon 2-6 of the PLA2G15 (Phospholipase A2, Group 5) gene and both located on the same chromosome 16q. NFATC3 is known as transcription factor in the Wnt signaling pathway and regulates function of the target genes like cell proliferation, invasion and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Under the experiments using siRNA in the colo-320 cell carrying fusion transcript, knockdown of the NFATC3-PLA2G15 fusion transcript decreased mRNA and protein expression of mesenchymal markers, namely vimentin (VIM), Twist-related protein 1 (TWIST1) and fibronectin (FN), and increased epithelial markers, E-cadherin (CDH1) and claudin-1 (CLDN1). Fusion transcripts knockdown also led to decrease of the invasion ability regulated by above markers. Moreover, soft agar assay showed inhibition of colony formation after fusion transcript knockdown. Fusion transcript downregulation also resulted in decrease of cell proliferation and mRNA and protein expression of cyclin D but increase in p27 level. The knockdown did not have influence in the fusion negative cell line. Collectively, these results suggest that the NFATC3-PLA2G15 fusion transcript is involved in invasion and proliferation of colorectal cancer cells.

Abstract
Surgical treatment of patients with rectal cancer is challenging. The concept of robotic surgery is attractive and has earned considerable interest after its successful implementation in the fields of urology and gynecology. Recently, robotic surgery for rectal cancer with total mesorectal excision (TME) has also obtained an increasing amount of attention in the colorectal field. In this review, we introduce the commonly performed methods of robotic rectal surgery and discuss results to date and future perspectives.

Abstract
Objective The timing of cranioplasty and method of bone flap storage are known risk factors of non-union and resorption of bone flaps. In this animal experimental study, we evaluated the efficacy of cranioplasty using frozen autologous bone flap, and examined whether the timing of cranioplasty after craniectomy affects bone fusion and new bone formation. Methods Total 8 rabbits (male, older than 16 weeks) were divided into two groups of early cranioplasty group (EG, 4 rabbits) and delayed cranioplasty group (DG, 4 rabbits). The rabbits of each group were performed cranioplasty via frozen autologous bone flaps 4 weeks (EG) and 8 weeks (DG) after craniectomy. In order to obtain control data, the cranioplasty immediate after craniectomy were made on the contralateral cranial bone of the rabbits (control group, CG).The bone fusion and new bone formation were evaluated by micro-CT scan and histological examination 8 weeks after cranioplasty on both groups. Results In the micro-CT scans, the mean values of the volume and the surface of new bone were 50.13±7.18 mm3 and 706.23±77.26 mm2 in EG, 53.78±10.86 mm3 and 726.60±170.99 mm2 in DG, and 31.51±12.84 mm3 and 436.65±132.24 mm2 in CG. In the statistical results, significant differences were shown between EG and CG and between DG and CG (volume : p=0.028 and surface : p=0.008). The histological results confirmed new bone formation in all rabbits. Conclusion We observed new bone formation on all the frozen autologous bone flaps that was stored within 8 weeks. The timing of cranioplasty may showed no difference of degree of new bone formation. Not only the healing period after cranioplasty but the time interval from craniectomy to cranioplasty could affect the new bone formation.

Abstract
We present a case of nasopharyngeal carcinoma complicated with hyperleucocytosis. After ruling our other causes we concluded that the hyperleucocytosis was due to paraneoplastic leukemoid reaction (PLR). The overall survival was 15 months which is rare among patients with PLR.

Abstract
In pediatric dentistry, chloral hydrate is habitually selected for sedation of uncooperative children. Although chloral hydrate has been used for decades, various adverse effects are reported and necessity for new alternative drugs has increased. Dexmedetomidine was approved by FDA for sedation at intensive care units (ICU) in 1999. Compared to conventional sedative drugs, dexmedetomidine has not only analgesic and sedative effects but also it barely suppresses the respiratory system. Due to these characteristics, dexmedetomidine is known as safe sedative drug for children and elderly patients. Furthermore, approved by KFDA in 2010 in Korea, the frequency of sedation using dexmedetomidine is increasing. However, due to its intravenous administration method, it was difficult to apply in pediatric dentistry. Recently, intranasal administration method was introduced which might be a new possible alternative of oral sedation. In this study, we compare the mechanisms, pros and cons of chloral hydrate and dexmedetomidine, introducing new possibilities.

Abstract
Surface-modified titanium (Ti) samples with hydroxyapatite (HAp) and heparin (Hep)-bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) complex (Ti/HAp/Hep/BMP-2) were prepared, and their efficacies on the enhancements of bone formation and osseointegration in vitro and in vivo were examined as compared to Ti/HAp and Ti/Hep/BMP-2. The modified surfaces were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and contact angle goniometry. In vitro studies revealed that MG-63 human osteosarcoma cell lines grown on Ti/HAp/Hep/BMP-2 increased the amounts of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, calcium deposition and the levels of OCN mRNA gene expression as compared to those grown on Ti/HAp, Ti/Hep/BMP-2 or pristine Ti. Moreover, Ti/HAp/Hep/BMP-2 exhibited higher bone volume (BV), bone volume/tissue volume (BV/TV), removal torque value and bone-implant contact (BIC) than Ti/HAp, Ti/Hep/BMP-2 or pristine Ti in vivo. Histological evaluations showed that many desirable features of bone remodelling existed at the interface between Ti/HAp/Hep/BMP-2 and the host bone. Consequently, Ti/HAp/Hep/BMP-2 may have potential for clinical use as dental or orthopaedic implants.
