Abstract
PURPOSE Radiation-induced intestinal injury (RIII) commonly occur during abdominal-pelvic cancer radiation therapy; however, no effective prophylactic or therapeutic agents are available to manage RIII currently. This study aimed to clarify the potential of probiotic consortium supplementation in alleviating RIII. METHODS AND MATERIALS Male C57BL/6J mice were orally administered a probiotic mixture comprising Bifidobacterium longum BL21, Lactobacillus paracasei LC86, and Lactobacillus plantarum Lp90 for 30 days before exposure to 13 Gy of whole abdominal irradiation. The survival rates, clinical scores, and histologic changes in the intestines of mice were assessed. The impacts of probiotic consortium treatment on intestinal stem cell proliferation, differentiation, and epithelial barrier function; oxidative stress; and inflammatory cytokines were evaluated. A comprehensive examination of the gut microbiota composition was conducted through 16S rRNA sequencing, while changes in metabolites were identified using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. RESULTS The probiotic consortium alleviated RIII, as reflected by increased survival rates, improved clinical scores, and mitigated mucosal injury. The probiotic consortium treatment exhibited enhanced therapeutic effects at the histologic level compared with individual probiotic strains, although there was no corresponding improvement in survival rates and colon length. Moreover, the probiotic consortium stimulated intestinal stem cell proliferation and differentiation, enhanced the integrity of the intestinal epithelial barrier, and regulated redox imbalance and inflammatory responses in irradiated mice. Notably, the treatment induced a restructuring of the gut microbiota composition, particularly enriching short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria. Metabolomic analysis revealed distinctive metabolic changes associated with the probiotic consortium, including elevated levels of anti-inflammatory and antiradiation metabolites. CONCLUSIONS The probiotic consortium attenuated RIII by modulating the gut microbiota and metabolites, improving inflammatory symptoms, and regulating oxidative stress. These findings provide new insights into the maintenance of intestinal health with probiotic consortium supplementation and will facilitate the development of probiotic-based therapeutic strategies for RIII in clinical practice.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the postoperative lymph node metastasis status and related factors of patients with early-stage low-risk endometrial cancer evaluated by the Mayo criteria in order to make the preoperative evaluation more accurate. Methods: A total of 172 patients with early-stage low-risk endometrial cancer who underwent surgery in Sichuan Provincial Cancer Hospital from 2009 to 2018 and were evaluated as early low-risk according to the "Mayo criteria" were retrospectively enrolled, and were divided into lymph node metastasis group (7 cases) and non-metastasis group (165 cases) according to the results of postoperative pathological examination. The postoperative pathological examination results and prognosis of all patients were collected. The lymph node metastasis of the two groups was analyzed. The multiple logistic regression model was used to analyze the related factors of lymph node metastasis, and the area under the curve (AUC) of the relevant factors was calculated by using the receiver operating characteristic curve to predict the postoperative lymph node metastasis of patients. Results: The age of 172 patients was (53.0±8.6) years, and the follow-up [M(Q1,Q3)] was 64.1 (46.2, 91.4) months, among whom 2 relapsed and 1 died. Among the 7 patients with lymph node metastasis, 5 cases had pelvic lymph node metastasis, 1 case had pelvic lymph union and abdominal para-aortic lymph node metastasis, 1 case had isolated abdominal para-aortic lymph node metastasis, 3 cases had two lymph node metastases, and 4 cases had intrailiac lymph nodes being the most common metastasis site. Multivariate analysis showed that preoperative serum cancer antigen (CA) 125 was the relevant factor for postoperative lymph node metastasis, with an OR value (95%CI) of 1.022 (1.001-1.043) (P=0.042), with AUC (95%CI) of CA125 predicting lymph node metastasis of 0.850 (0.761-0.939) (P=0.002), and the optimal cut-off value of CA125 was 29.305 U/ml with the sensitivity of 85.7% and the specificity of 80.6%. Conclusions: When CA125>29.305 U/ml, patients with early-stage low-risk endometrial cancer assessed by the Mayo criteria, had an increased risk of lymph node metastasis. Therefore, adding preoperative serum CA125 level as an evaluation index on the basis of the classic "Mayo criteria" may help conduct more accurate preoperative evaluation and better identify early-stage low-risk EC patients.

Abstract
The small intestine exhibits remarkable sensitivity to ionizing radiation (IR), which significantly hampers the effectiveness of radiotherapy in the treatment of abdominal and pelvic tumors. Unfortunately, no effective medications are available to treat radiation-induced intestinal damage (RIID). Fraxin (7-hydroxy-6-methoxycoumarin 8-glucoside), is a coumarin derivative extracted from the Chinese herb Cortex Fraxini. Several studies have underscored the anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties of fraxin. However, the efficacy of fraxin at preventing or mitigating RIID remains unclear. Thus, the present study aimed to investigate the protective effects of fraxin against RIID in vitro and in vivo and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms. The study findings revealed that fraxin markedly ameliorated intestinal injuries induced by 13 Gy whole abdominal irradiation (WAI), which was accompanied by a significant increase in the population of Lgr5+ intestinal stem cells (ISCs) and Ki67+ progeny. Furthermore, fraxin mitigated WAI-induced intestinal barrier damage, and reduced oxidative stress and intestinal inflammation in mice. Transcriptome sequencing of fraxin-treated mice revealed upregulation of IL-22, a pleiotropic cytokine involved in regulating the function of intestinal epithelial cells. Moreover, in both human intestinal epithelial cells and ex vivo cultured mouse intestinal organoids, fraxin effectively ameliorated IR-induced damage by promoting the expression of IL-22. The radioprotective effects of fraxin were partially negated in the presence of an IL-22-neutralizing antibody. In summary, fraxin is demonstrated to possess the ability to alleviate RIID and maintain intestinal homeostasis, suggesting that fraxin might serve as a strategy for mitigating accidental radiation exposure- or radiotherapy-induced RIID.

Abstract
Objective: The real-world clinical data of patients with newly diagnosed ovarian cancer (including fallopian tube cancer and primary peritoneal cancer) who received first-line maintenance therapy with poly adenosine diphosphate ribose polymerase inhibitor (PARPi) were retrospectively analyzed, and the prognostic factors were preliminarily explored. Methods: (1) The clinicopathological data and follow-up data of ovarian cancer patients treated with PARPi first-line maintenance therapy from August 2018 (PARPi was launched in China) to December 31, 2021 in Sichuan Cancer Hospital were collected (real-world clinical data). (2) According to the different types of PARPi, real-world clinical data were divided into olaparib group and niraparib group, which were respectively compared with the inclusion and exclusion criteria of representative domestic and foreign phase Ⅲ randomized controlled trials (RCT), including olaparib as first-line maintenance therapy for advanced ovarian cancer patients with BRCA1/2 gene mutation (SOLO-1 study), niraparib as first-line maintenance therapy (PRIMA study), and niraparib as first-line maintenance therapy for Chinese advanced ovarian cancer patients (PRIME study). (3) The prognosis of the two groups and the prognostic factors were analyzed. Results: (1) A total of 83 patients were included in this study, with a median age of 51 years (47-57 years), including 75 cases of ovarian cancer, 5 cases of fallopian tube cancer, and 3 cases of primary peritoneal cancer; 5 cases of stage Ⅰ, 9 cases of stage Ⅱ, 55 cases of stage Ⅲ, 12 cases of stage Ⅳ, and 2 cases of unknown stage; neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) was performed in 40 cases and non-NACT in 43 cases; 62 cases had no visible residual lesion after surgery (R0), 9 cases had residual disease lesions <1 cm (R1), 8 cases had residual disease lesions ≥1 cm (R2), and 4 cases with unknown postoperative residual disease. Thirty-two cases had PARPi treatment interruption, 40 cases had PARPi reduction, and 1 case terminated treatment due to acute leukemia. Of the 83 patients, 35 were in the olaparib group and 48 were in the niraparib group. The proportion of patients with high-grade serous carcinoma (100% and 75%, respectively) and the proportion of BRCA mutant patients (91% and 10%, respectively) in the olaparib group were higher than those in the niraparib group (all P<0.01). (2) Compared with the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the SOLO-1 study, the olaparib group had only 60% (21/35) coincidence rate; compared with the inclusion and exclusion criteria of PRIMA and PRIME studies, the coincidence rates of niraparib group were only 31% (15/48) and 69% (33/48). The most common reasons for non-compliance were number of chemotherapy courses, histopathological type, and surgical pathological stage. (3) Of the 83 cases received first-line maintenance therapy with PARPi, the median follow-up was 15.9 months (11.3-22.9 months), the median progression-free survival (PFS) was 29.7 months (95%CI: 25.9-33.6 months), and the median overall survival was 49.8 months (95%CI: 47.4-52.2 months). Univariate analysis showed that unilateral or bilateral ovarian cancer, efficacy after platinum-containing chemotherapy, presence or absence of measurable lesions at the end of chemotherapy, and total number of chemotherapy courses were significantly associated with PFS (all P<0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that unilateral or bilateral ovarian cancer, total number of chemotherapy courses, and efficacy after platinum-containing chemotherapy were independent factors affecting PFS in stage Ⅱ-Ⅳ patients with PARPi first-line maintenance therapy (all P<0.05). Conclusions: Unilateral ovarian cancer, the total number of chemotherapy courses no more than 9, and achieving complete response after platinum-containing chemotherapy before maintenance therapy are independent influencing factors of PFS benefit in patients with PARPi first-line maintenance therapy. Due to the large differences between the patients in real clinical practice and the research subjects of phase Ⅲ RCT, the results of representative retrospective studies still have important clinical reference significance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND During the COVID-19 pandemic, wearing PPE can induce skin damage such as erythema, pruritus, erosion, and ulceration among others. Although the skin microbiome is considered important for skin health, the change of the skin microbiome after wearing PPE remain unknown. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to characterize the diversity and structure of bacterial and fungal flora on skin surfaces of healthcare workers wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic using metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS). METHODS A total of 10 Chinese volunteers were recruited and the microbiome of their face, hand, and back were analyzed before and after wearing PPE. Moreover, VISIA was used to analyze skin features. RESULTS Results of alpha bacterial diversity showed that there was statistically significant decrease in alpha diversity indice in the skin samples from face, hand, and three sites after wearing PPE as compared with the indice in the skin samples before wearing PPE. Further, the results of evaluated alpha fungal diversity show that there was a statistically significant decrease in alpha diversity indices in the skin samples from hand after wearing PPE as compared with the indices in the skin samples before wearing PPE (P<0.05). Results of the current study found that the main bacteria on the face, hand, and back skin samples before wearing the PPE were Propionibacterium spp. (34.04%), Corynebacterium spp. (13.12%), and Staphylococcus spp. (38.07%). The main bacteria found on the skin samples after wearing the PPE were Staphylococcus spp. (31.23%), Xanthomonas spp. (26.21%), and Cutibacterium spp. (42.59%). The fungal community composition was similar in three skin sites before and after wearing PPE. CONCLUSION It was evident that wearing PPE may affect the skin microbiota, especially bacteria. Therefore, it was evident that the symbiotic microbiota may reflect the skin health of medical workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the prognostic factors of patients with advanced epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) who received neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) followed by interval debulking surgery (IDS). Methods: The clinical and pathological data of patients with stage Ⅲc-Ⅳ EOC underwent surgical treatment in Sichuan Cancer Center from January 1st, 2014 to December 31th, 2018 were retrospectively analyzed, and the prognosis was followed up. Results: (1) A total of 216 EOC patients were included in the study, whose age was (52.1±8.7) years old, the median follow-up time was 44.6 months (17.2-80.1 months), the median progression free survival (PFS) was 11.1 months (8.5-13.8 months), and the median overall survival (OS) was 40.0 months (32.7-47.3 months). (2) Among 216 patients with advanced EOC, there were 75 cases in the primary debulking surgery (PDS) group and 141 cases in the NACT+IDS group. Compared with the PDS group, the serum CA125 level before treatment (median: 859.4 vs 1 371.0 kU/L), proportion of stage Ⅳ patients [5.3% (4/75) vs 23.4% (33/144)] and no visible residual disease (R0) cytoreduction rate in the NACT+IDS group were significantly higher [(41.3% (31/75) vs 61.7% (87/144); all P<0.05]. The median PFS in the NACT+IDS group was significantly shorter than that of the PDS group (9.1 vs 15.2 months; χ2=7.014, P=0.008), but there was no significant difference in the median OS between the two groups (42.6 vs 38.0 months; χ2=1.325, P=0.250). (3) Univariate analysis showed that body mass index (BMI), preoperative serum CA125 level, surgical-pathological stage, NACT effect, postoperative residual tumor size, time to initiation of postoperative chemotherapy and chemotherapy regimen were significantly correlated with PFS in the NACT+IDS group (all P<0.05); preoperative serum CA125 level, surgical-pathological stage, NACT effect, postoperative residual tumor size, postoperative chemotherapy regimen were significantly related with OS in the NACT+IDS group (all P<0.05). Multivariate analysis showed that BMI, postoperative residual tumor size, time to initiation of postoperative chemotherapy were independent factors of PFS in the NACT+IDS group (all P<0.05); preoperative serum CA125 level, surgical-pathological stage, postoperative residual tumor size were independent factors of OS in the NACT+IDS group (all P<0.05). The results showed that the PFS of patients with normal preoperative serum CA125 level and (or) chemotherapy ≤7 days after IDS was longer, while no significant difference comparable with those in the PDS group (P>0.05), and OS was also showing an prolonged trend, but the difference was also not statistically significant (P>0.05). Conclusions: Normal CA125 before IDS and time received chemotherapy no longer than 7 days after IDS are two related factors of prognosis benefit in advance EOC patients treated with NACT+IDS. Therefore, timely adjustment of the dose and regimen of NACT to reduce CA125 level to normal range in about three cycles before IDS, and strengthen IDS perioperative management to promote postoperative recovery and perform chemotherapy as soon as possible might help to improve the prognosis of patients.

Abstract
Microfluidic chips made by traditional materials (glass and silicon) are still important for fluorescence tests, biocompatible experiments, and high temperature applications. However, the majority of the present bonding methods suffer from ultra-clean requirement, complicated fabrication process, and low production efficiency. In the present work, an Electrohydrodynamic printing assist bonding method was proposed. By this method, the ultraviolet-cured-glue dots were printed onto the silicon substrate, and then the patterned glass and silicon substrate can be bonded together at room temperature. The influence of printing condition (nozzle inner-diameter, applied voltage, printing height, and flow rate) on the diameter of printed dot was analyzed by experiments. By the optimized printing condition, the glass-silicon microfluidic chip can be well bonded. The bonding strength and leakage test demonstrated the high bonding quality of the microfluidic chip (bonding strength of 28 MPa and leakage pressure of 3.5 MPa).

Abstract
Objective: To explore the potential mechanism of sorafenib resistance associated long non-coding RNA (lncRNA-SRLR) promoted invasion and metastasis in U2OS osteosarcoma cells. Methods: We transfected U2OS cells with negative control lentivirus (LV-NC) or lncRNA-SRLR overexpressed lentivirus (LV-over/SRLR) particles. LV-NC and LV-over/SRLR stable transfected cells (U20S/NC and U20S/SRLR) were selected by primary cell culture medium containing puromycin. The mRNA expressions of lncRNA-SRLR and procollagen-lysine, procollagen-lysine 2-oxoglutarate 5-dioxygenase 2 (PLOD2) were detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The effect of lncRNA-SRLR on the invasion of U2OS cells were determined by wound-healing assay and Transwell migration assay. The effect of SRLR on the interleukin-6 (IL-6) secretion of U2OS cells was evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) analysis. The subcellular distribution of SRLR in U2OS cells was detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis.The expression of PLOD2 in cells was detected by immunofluorescence (IF). The expressions of PLOD2 and focal adhesion kinase (FAK)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signal pathway related proteins in U2OS/NC and U2OS/SRLR cells were detected by western blotting. Results: qRT-PCR assay showed that mRNA expressions of lncRNA-SRLR and PLOD2 in U2OS/SRLR cells were (3 964.97±0.05) and (2.77±0.11), respectively, significantly higher than those in U2OS/NC cells (P<0.001 or P<0.01). The results of wound-healing and Transwell migration assay showed that over-expression of SRLR markedly promoted the invasion ability of U2OS cells (P<0.05). The result of ELISA analysis showed that the IL-6 secretions in U2OS/NC or U2OS/SRLR cells were (125.38±11.22) pg/ml or (119.97±13.43) pg/ml, without statistical significance (P>0.05). The subcellular distribution assay revealed that lncRNA-SRLR is predominately located in the nucleus. The result of IF showed that compared with U2OS/NC cells, the expression of PLOD2 was up-regulated in U2OS/SRLR cells. The result of western blotting showed that over-expression of SRLR significantly increased the expression levels of PLOD2, phosphorylation (p)-FAK and p-STAT3 in U2OS cells (P<0.01). Conclusion: lncRNA-SRLR promotes invasion and metastasis of osteosarcoma by activating PLOD2-FAK/STAT3 signal axis.

Abstract
Bauxite mining on karst generates numerous ecological and environmental problems, including metal pollution, water and soil erosion and destruction of vegetation. Among these, the most important environmental problem is soil metal pollution. Higher plants have a great ability to adsorb metals and can be used as biological indicators. However, the study of bioindicators for soil contamination in karst bauxite is not clear. Plants and their soil were collected from an abandoned karst bauxite area at Shangdong, Guizhou Province, southwestern China. Plants were collected and identified as Pteris vittata, Pinus massoniana, Miscanthus floridulus, Coriaria nepalensis, Artemisia argyi and Senecio scandens. The content of metals in plant roots were in the order: P. vittata > M. floridulus > C. nepalensis, other plants roots had no consistent pattern. Concentrations of metal in plants (P. vittata and M. floridulus) and soil were: soil > root > leaf > stem. Levels of metals in soil samples easily exceeded background values, indicating that soil had been contaminated. Al and Fe were highest in soil samples of P. vittata, with a good correlation. Results show that the metal content determined in plants is relatively high, particularly in P. vittata. Data also suggest that P. vittata colonies were able to tolerate and accumulate high levels of metal elements, which evidences their suitability for use as bioindicatord of soil metal contamination caused by mining activities.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignant tumors in China with high morbidity and mortality, and its mortality rate is only lower than that of gastric cancer. It poses a serious threat to patients' life, which needs to be given special concerns by clinicians and patients for active implementation of effective treatment methods. Generally, major operation is the mainstay of management. Radiotherapy has gained its popularity when diagnosed have no indications for surgical therapy. An effective radiotherapy plans promote the remission of hepatocellular carcinoma to improve patients condition, prognosis, and survival rate. Therefore, we conducted this study to know the research progress of radiotherapy for hepatocellular carcinoma.

Abstract
To establish the experts consensus on the right heart function management in critically ill patients. The panel of consensus was composed of 30 experts in critical care medicine who are all members of Critical Hemodynamic Therapy Collaboration Group (CHTC Group). Each statement was assessed based on the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) principle. Then the Delphi method was adopted by 52 experts to reassess all the statements. (1) Right heart function is prone to be affected in critically illness, which will result in a auto-exaggerated vicious cycle. (2) Right heart function management is a key step of the hemodynamic therapy in critically ill patients. (3) Fluid resuscitation means the process of fluid therapy through rapid adjustment of intravascular volume aiming to improve tissue perfusion. Reversed fluid resuscitation means reducing volume. (4) The right ventricle afterload should be taken into consideration when using stroke volume variation (SVV) or pulse pressure variation (PPV) to assess fluid responsiveness.(5)Volume overload alone could lead to septal displacement and damage the diastolic function of the left ventricle. (6) The Starling curve of the right ventricle is not the same as the one applied to the left ventricle,the judgement of the different states for the right ventricle is the key of volume management. (7) The alteration of right heart function has its own characteristics, volume assessment and adjustment is an important part of the treatment of right ventricular dysfunction (8) Right ventricular enlargement is the prerequisite for increased cardiac output during reversed fluid resuscitation; Nonetheless, right heart enlargement does not mandate reversed fluid resuscitation.(9)Increased pulmonary vascular resistance induced by a variety of factors could affect right heart function by obstructing the blood flow. (10) When pulmonary hypertension was detected in clinical scenario, the differentiation of critical care-related pulmonary hypertension should be a priority. (11) Attention should be paid to the change of right heart function before and after implementation of mechanical ventilation and adjustment of ventilator parameter. (12) The pulmonary arterial pressure should be monitored timingly when dealing with critical care-related pulmonary hypertension accompanied with circulatory failure.(13) The elevation of pulmonary aterial pressure should be taken into account in critical patients with acute right heart dysfunction. (14) Prone position ventilation is an important measure to reduce pulmonary vascular resistance when treating acute respiratory distress syndrome patients accompanied with acute cor pulmonale. (15) Attention should be paid to right ventricle-pulmonary artery coupling during the management of right heart function. (16) Right ventricular diastolic function is more prone to be affected in critically ill patients, the application of critical ultrasound is more conducive to quantitative assessment of right ventricular diastolic function. (17) As one of the parameters to assess the filling pressure of right heart, central venous pressure can be used to assess right heart diastolic function. (18). The early and prominent manifestation of non-focal cardiac tamponade is right ventricular diastolic involvement, the elevated right atrial pressure should be noticed. (19) The effect of increased intrathoracic pressure on right heart diastolic function should be valued. (20) Ttricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) is an important parameter that reflects right ventricular systolic function, and it is recommended as a general indicator of critically ill patient. (21) Circulation management with right heart protection as the core strategy is the key point of the treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome. (22) Right heart function involvement after cardiac surgery is very common and should be highly valued. (23) Right ventricular dysfunction should not be considered as a routine excuse for maintaining higher central venous pressure. (24) When left ventricular dilation, attention should be paid to the effect of left ventricle on right ventricular diastolic function. (25) The impact of left ventricular function should be excluded when the contractility of the right ventricle is decreased. (26) When the right heart load increases acutely, the shunt between the left and right heart should be monitored. (27) Attention should be paid to the increase of central venous pressure caused by right ventricular dysfunction and its influence on microcirculation blood flow. (28) When the vasoactive drugs was used to reduce the pressure of pulmonary circulation, different effects on pulmonary and systemic circulation should be evaluated. (29) Right atrial pressure is an important factor affecting venous return. Attention should be paid to the influence of the pressure composition of the right atrium on the venous return. (30) Attention should be paid to the role of the right ventricle in the acute pulmonary edema. (31) Monitoring the difference between the mean systemic filling pressure and the right atrial pressure is helpful to determine whether the infusion increases the venous return. (32) Venous return resistance is often considered to be a insignificant factor that affects venous return, but attention should be paid to the effect of the specific pathophysiological status, such as intrathoracic hypertension, intra-abdominal hypertension and so on. Consensus can promote right heart function management in critically ill patients, optimize hemodynamic therapy, and even affect prognosis.

Abstract
Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is a major infectious disease which threatens people's health around the world. Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has become an important index for evaluating the treatment and prognosis of patients with CHB. Many studies abroad have shown that the HRQoL of patients with CHB is influenced by various factors. Disease severity, clinical symptoms, and low self-efficacy are important influencing factors for patients' quality of life. Anti-viral therapy, proper physical therapy, or psychological intervention can significantly improve the HRQoL of community CHB patients, and HRQoL is even significantly improved in patients undergoing liver transplantation one year ago. These studies provide valid evidence for antiviral therapy for hepatitis B patients and liver transplantation techniques from the psychological level. At present, there still lacks studies on HRQoL of CHB patients in China. This article summarizes the measurement tools for HRQoL widely used in recent years in China and foreign countries, reviews the research advances in HRQoL in community patients with CHB, and discusses the perspectives for future studies.

Abstract
The biological properties of Piper sarmentosum render it a potential substitute for antibiotics in livestock feed. This study evaluated the effects of P. sarmentosum extract (PSE) on the growth performance, antioxidant capability and immune response of weaned piglets. Eighty 21-d-old weaned piglets were selected and randomly allocated to one of four dietary treatments with five replicates of four pigs each. The dietary treatments consisted of a basal diet supplemented with 0 (T0), 50 (T50), 100 (T100) or 200 (T200) mg/kg PSE. The feeding trial lasted 4 weeks. The results revealed that the T50 group had the highest average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI) throughout the feeding trial (p < 0.05). Additionally, the T50 group had higher (p < 0.05) serum glutathione peroxidase activity (GSH-Px) and lower (p < 0.05) serum malondialdehyde (MDA) levels than the T0 group at 4 weeks post-weaning (p < 0.05). Serum levels of interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) decreased, while serum levels of interleukin-4 (IL-4), interleukin-10 (IL-10) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) increased by PSE supplementation at 4 weeks post-weaning (p < 0.05). PSE supplementation upregulated the mRNA expression of IL-4, IL-10 and TGF-β and downregulated the mRNA expression of TNF-α, IL-1β and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the ileal mucosal layer of piglets (p < 0.05). In summary, our study findings revealed that PSE supplementation improved the antioxidant capability, and reduced inflammation, which may be beneficial to weaned piglet health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the assessment of wrist synovitis severity, synovial volume and synovial perfusion parameters on a dedicated low-field (0.25-T) to that of a high-field (3-T) whole-body MR system in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS Twenty-one patients (mean age 50.0 ± 9.8 years) with active RA were recruited prospectively. Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI examination of the most severely affected wrist was performed at both 0.25 T and 3 T. Three MRI-derived parameters, synovitis severity (RAMRIS grade), synovial volume (ml(3)) and synovial perfusion indices (maximum enhancement and enhancement slope), were compared. RESULTS Comparing 0.25- and 3-T MRI, there was excellent agreement for semiquantitative assessment (r: 0.80, p < 0.00001) of synovitis (RAMRIS) as well as quantitative assessment (r: 0.94, p < 0.00001) of synovial volume. Good agreement for synovial Emax (r: 0.6, p = 0.002) and fair agreement (r: 0.5, p = 0.02) for synovial Eslope was found. CONCLUSIONS Imaging of the RA wrist at 0.25 T yields excellent correlation with 3 T with regard to the synovitis activity score (RAMRIS) and synovial volume measurement. Fair to good correlation between low- (0.25-T) and high-field (3-T) MR systems was found for perfusion parameters, being better for Emax than for Eslope.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND METHODS Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (lelc) is a rare malignancy in ocular adnexa. Here, we report 4 patients with lelc and review 11 patients reported in the literature. Clinical profiles, association with Epstein-Barr virus (ebv), treatment, and outcomes are analyzed. RESULTS Lacrimal glands and the lacrimal drainage system, eyelid, and conjunctiva are potential primary sites for lelc. The tumours are characterized histologically by nests of undifferentiated malignant cells surrounded by lymphoid infiltrates. Infection with ebv was confirmed in lelc of ocular adnexa, and that association seemed to be restricted to Asian populations. Results from our centre uniformly showed expression of ebv-encoded small rnas in primary tumour, locally recurrent tumour, and metastatic lymph nodes. This disease had a tendency to relapse regionally. Postoperative radiotherapy seems to improve disease-free survival. Tumours appear to be sensitive to radiotherapy and chemotherapy based on cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil. At our centre, 3 patients were still living at 22, 33, and 76 months after surgery. One patient died of distant metastasis after a survival of 38 months. CONCLUSIONS Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma is a heterogenous entity among ocular adnexal malignancies. Multimodality treatment provides a better chance at survival. Further investigation is required to achieve a better understanding of the biologic behavior of this entity and of its optimal treatment.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the protective effects of isoflavone (ISO) against zearalenone (ZEA) residues in the muscle and liver tissues of prepubertal gilts. Seventy 75-day-old, prepubertal, female pigs (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire, 26.5 ± 0.60 kg) were allocated randomly to seven diet treatments for 21days as follows: one control group (fed the basal diet) and six groups fed the basal diet with the addition of either 0.5 or 2.0 mg/kg ZEA plus either 0, 300 or 600 mg/kg ISO. The results showed that the diet with 2.0 mg/kg ZEA added caused an increase of ZEA residue level in muscle tissue (P < 0.05), and that the addition of both 0.5 and 2.0 mg/kg ZEA increased the residue level of ZEA in the liver of prepubertal gilts (P < 0.05). Addition of 600 mg/kg ISO to 2.0 mg/kg ZEA-contaminated diet decreased the ZEA residue level in liver tissue (P < 0.05), and the addition of 300 or 600 mg/kg ISO to the 2.0 mg/kg ZEA-contaminated diet decreased the residue levels of ZEA in muscle tissue (P < 0.05). Western blot analysis demonstrated that feeding ZEA to prepubertal gilts increased their protein expression of 3α/3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (HSD; P < 0.05), and that the addition of 300 or 600 mg/kg ISO to the 2.0 mg/kg ZEA-contaminated diet decreased the protein expression of 3α/3β-HSD (P < 0.05), compared with the addition of 2.0 mg/kg ZEA alone. The results demonstrated that muscle and liver tissues retain residual ZEA when pigs are fed a diet contaminated with high concentrations of ZEA, and that the concentration of ZEA in muscle and liver tissues increased with increased amounts of ZEA in the feed. In diets contaminated with high levels of ZEA, the addition of ISO may accelerate the biotransformation and degradation of ZEA and its metabolites, and reduce the residues of ZEA in liver and muscle tissues of prepubertal gilts.

Abstract
The aim of the present research was to determine the interactive effect of zearalenone (ZEA) and soybean isoflavone (ISO) on the growth performance, development of organs and serum parameters in prepubertal gilts. Ninety 75-day-old female pigs (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire, 26.5 ± 0.60 kg) were randomly allocated to nine diet treatments during the 21-day study. The experiment employed a 3 × 3 factorial design using a non-soybean meal diet with the addition of 0, 0.5 or 2.0 mg/kg ZEA and 0, 300 or 600 mg/kg ISO. The results indicated that simultaneous addition of ZEA and ISO had no significant influence on the growth performance in prepubertal gilts. Zearalenone with 2 mg/kg increased (p < 0.05) the relative weight of the reproductive organs (including uterus and vagina) but had no obvious effects (p > 0.05) on the relative weight of the heart, liver, lung, kidney and spleen. Isoflavone at 600 mg/kg could offset the increased weight of the reproductive organs induced by ZEA. Simultaneous addition of ZEA and ISO to prepubertal gilts increased the level of alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase in the serum (p < 0.05) at day 14 but their levels decreased (p < 0.05) over time. Zearalenone increased the level of malondialdehyde and decreased the concentrations of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase (p < 0.05) in the serum. The results suggested that ISO added to diets at 600 mg/kg could reduce the increase in the relative weight of reproductive organs and relieve the oxidative stress induced by ZEA added at 2 mg/kg during the growth phase in prepubertal gilts.

Abstract

Ninety 75-day-old female pigs (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire, 26.50 ± 0.60 kg) were randomly allocated to nine diet treatments during the 21 day study. The experiment employed a 3 × 3 factorial design using a non-soybean meal diet with addition of 0, 0.5 or 2.0mg/kg ZEA and 0, 300 or 600 mg/kg ISO. The results indicated that diets supplemented with 600 mg/kg ISO could reduce the increased weight of the reproductive organs induced by ZEA at 2mg/kg (P<0.05) while feed containing ISO and 0.5mg/kg ZEA increased the weight of the reproductive organs compared with pigs fed diets with 0.5mg/kg ZEA alone. Diets with ISO at 600 mg/kg reduced the large width of vulvas induced by diets with 2mg/kg ZEA (P<0.05). Simultaneous provision of ZEA and ISO to prepubertal gilts increased the level of E2 at days 7 and 14, but decreased it at day 21 (P<0.05). Pigs simultaneously fed 2mg/kg ZEA and 600 mg/kg ISO had the highest level of FSH (P<0.05). There was a significant interaction (P<0.05) between ZEA and ISO supplementation on the level of LH, and pigs offered diets with 2mg/kg ZEA and 600 mg/kg ISO had the lowest level of LH on days 14 and 21. Animals supplemented simultaneously with ZEA and ISO showed higher ERα/ERβ mRNA expression compared to those offered diets containing 0.5mg/kg ZEA alone or basal diets. However, this simultaneous supplementation resulted in a lower level of ERα/ERβ mRNA expression compared to offering diets with 2mg/kg ZEA alone. It appears that ISO can counteract the estrogenic influence of a high dosage of ZEA (2mg/kg). This affect might be attributed to competitive binding with estrogen receptors, thereby weakening the estrogenic effect of ZEA. Meanwhile, interactions between ZEA and ISO may interfere with the functioning of E2, FSH and LH in prepubertal gilts.

Abstract
Velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medic), a tall, fecund, self-fertile annual plant in the family Malvaceae, is widely grown in China as a fiber crop and for its medicinal properties. In July of 2008, we observed diffuse chlorotic and necrotic spots on the oldest leaves of velvetleaf plants in the field in Shanxi Province. Sap extracts from six symptomatic plants were tested by direct antigen coated ELISA using polyclonal antibodies specific to Potato virus Y (PVY) and monoclonal antibodies specific to Tomato mosaic virus (ToMV), Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), and Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). Five of the six samples were negative for ToMV, CMV, and PVY but positive for TMV. Double-stranded RNA extracted from leaves of the five velvetleaf plants was used as template for reverse transcription (RT)-PCR as described by Krajačića et al. (1) and Li et al. (2) with some modifications. One-step RT-PCR was performed using a Quant One Step RT-PCR Kit (TIANGEN BIOTECH CO., LTD., Beijing, China) with sense (5'-CTGTTTAGCCGGTTTGGT-3'), and antisense (5'-TCCCTTTACGGACATCAC-3') primers (3) designed to specifically amplify a fragment of the movement protein coding region of TMV. The expected 470-bp fragments were amplified from dsRNA from these five plants and the amplicon from each plant was cloned and sequenced (GenBank Accession No. FJ873800). Comparisons of a consensus sequence derived from the five amplicons with the nucleotide sequences available in the NCBI database using BLAST showed 99% identity with TMV from South Korea (GenBank Accession No. AB354955) and Spain (Accession No. AJ308692) and 98% with TMV from China (Accession No. AF165190). The serological, RT-PCR results and sequence data revealed that these velvetleaf plants were infected by TMV. On the basis of the serological analysis and genome sequence comparisons, this isolate was tentatively designated as TMV-Velvetleaf. Abstract
To investigate the feasibility of a long-term left ventricular assist device (LVAD) placed in the aortic valve annulus, an implantable aortic valve pump (21 mm outer diameter, weighing 27 g) was developed. The device consists of a central rotor and a stator. The rotor assembly incorporates driven magnets and an impeller. The stator assembly has a motor coil with an iron core and outflow guide vanes. The device is to be implanted identically to an aortic valve replacement, occupying no additional anatomic space. The pump delivers the blood directly from left ventricle to the aortic root, like a natural ventricle, therefore causing less physiologic disturbance to the natural circulation. Neither connecting conduits nor 'bypass' circuits are necessary. The pump is designed to cycle between a peak flow and zero net flow to approximate systole and diastole. Bench testing indicates that the pump can produce a blood flow of 5 l min(-1) with 50 mmHg pressure increase at 17,500 rpm. At zero net flow rate, the pump can maintain a diastole aortic pressure against 80 mmHg at the same rotating speed.

Abstract
In the early 1990s, Yamazaki et al. developed a partly intra-ventricular pump, which was inserted into the left ventricle via the apex and then into the aorta through the aortic valve. The pump delivered blood flow directly from the left ventricle to the aorta, like a natural heart, and needed no inflow and outflow connecting tubes; it could be weaned off after the left ventricle had been recovered. The shortcomings were that the driving DC motor remained outside of the ventricle, causing an anatomic space problem, and the sealing and bearing were not appropriate for a durable device. Recently, a totally implantable trans-ventricular pump has been developed in the authors' laboratory. The device has a motor and a pump entirely contained within one cannula. The motor has a motor coil with iron core and a rotor with four-pole magnet; the pump has an impeller and an outflow guide vane. The motor part is 60 mm in length and 13 mm in diameter; the pump part is 55 mm in length and 11 mm in diameter. The total length of the device is therefore 115 mm. The total weight of the device is 53 g. The motor uses rolling bearing with eight needles on each side of the rotor magnets. A special purge system is devised for the infusion of saline mixed with heparin through bearing to the pump inlet (30 - 50 cc per hour). Thus neither mechanical wear nor thrombus formation along the bearing will occur. In haemodynamic testing, the pump can produce a flow of 4 l min-1 with 60 mmHg pressure increase, at a pump rotating speed of 12,500 rpm. At zero flow rate, corresponding to the diastolic period of the heart, the pump can maintain aortic blood pressure over 80 mmHg at the same rotating speed. This novel pump can be quickly inserted in an emergency and easily removed after recovery of natural heart. It will be useful for patients with acute left ventricular failure.

Abstract
The generation of brilliant, stable, and broadband coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) in electron storage rings depends strongly on ring rf system properties such as frequency and gap voltage. We have observed intense coherent radiation at frequencies approaching the THz regime produced by the MIT-Bates South Hall Ring, which employs a high-frequency S-band rf system. The measured CSR spectral intensity enhancement with 2 mA stored current was up to 10,000 times above background for wave numbers near 3 cm(-1). The measurements also uncovered strong beam instabilities that must be suppressed if such a very high rf frequency electron storage ring is to become a viable coherent THz source.

Abstract
For better anatomic and physiologic fitting, a novel implantable aortic valvo-pump (IAVP) has been developed. A valvo-pump is a micro axial flow impeller pump, which has the same dimensions and function, as well as the same location, of a valve. Therefore, IAVP needs no inlet and outlet tubes, no additional anatomic occupation, and has less physiologic disturbance to natural circulation compared with the traditional bypass left ventricular assist device (LVAD). The device has a stator and a rotor. The stator consists of a motor coil with an iron core and an outflow guide vane; the rotor includes driven magnets and impeller. There is neither bearing nor strut in both the pump and the motor. In order to reduce the attractive force between the rotor and the stator, so as to enhance the durability of the performance, the rotor magnets were minimized without reducing the driving torque and efficiency of the motor. The impeller vane was designed according to a three-dimensional and analytical method, for preventing stasis and turbulence. The largest outer diameter is 24.7 mm and the length at this point is 12.4 mm. The total weight is 40 g (including the rotor of 11 g). The consumed power is 7 W (14 V x 0.5 A) at 15 000 rpm. This rotating speed stays unchanged during haemodynamic testing together with a pulsatile centrifugal pump, which imitates a failing ventricle. The maximal flow cross IAVP reaches over 10 l min(-1) and the pressure head at 0 l min(-1) can be as large as 80 mmHg. At flow rate of 4 - 8 l min(-1), IAVP enlarges the flow c. 1 l min(-1) and meanwhile increases the pressure about 10 mmHg. The pressure pulsatility generated by the pulsatile centrifugal pump remains 40 mmHg after passing IAVP. By first animal experimental trial the device was sewed in aortic position of an 80 kg pig without harm to adjacent tissue and organs. IAVP promises to be a viable alternative to natural donor heart for heart transplantation in the future.

Abstract
The conformational preference of calix[4]pyrrole and its fluoride and chloride anion-binding properties have been investigated by density functional theory calculations. Geometries were optimized by the BLYP/3-21G and BLYP/6-31G methods, and energies were evaluated with the BLYP/6-31+G method. To model the effect of medium, the SCIPCM solvent model was also employed. Four typical conformations of the parent substituent-free calix[4]pyrrole were studied. Both in the gas phase and in CH(2)Cl(2) solution, the stability sequence is predicted to be 1,3-alternate > partial cone > 1,2-alternate > cone. The cone conformation is predicted to be about 16.0 and 11.4 kcal/mol less stable in the gas phase and CH(2)Cl(2) solution, respectively. This is mainly due to electrostatic repulsions arising from the all-syn pyrrole/pyrrole/pyrrole/pyrrole arrangement present in this conformer. The existence of possible 1:1 and 1:2 anion-binding modes were explored in the case of fluoride anion, and the factors favoring the 1:1 binding mode are discussed. The calculated binding energy for fluoride anion is about 15 kcal/mol larger than that for chloride anion. The calculated binding energy for chloride anion agrees with the experimental value very well. The presence of meso-alkyl substituents destabilizes the cone conformer with respect to the 1,3-alternate conformer and, therefore, reduces the anion-binding affinity by 3-4 kcal/mol. The strength of N-H- - -anion hydrogen bonds in the various structures subject to study were estimated on the basis of the calculated anion-binding energies and the predicted structural deformation energies of substituent-free calix[4]pyrrole.

Abstract
In this work, using the ECL Western blotting assay system, it was found that genistein, a specific tyrosine kinase inhibitor, was able to inhibit EGF-induced EGF receptor degradation and tyrosine phosphorylation in human hepatoma HepG2 cells. This inhibition was increased with increasing genistein concentration. With treatment of HepG2 cells with genistein at 37 degrees C for 30 min, the amount of internalized EGF, which was measured by the detection of the sorting of 125I-EGF in the cells, was remarkably decreased. Under the same conditions, in cells untreated with genistein, the degradation of EGF was significantly increased. After preincubation of HepG2 cells with and without genistein for 120 min at 37 degrees C, the ratio between degraded and released EGF was 16 and 24, respectively. These results suggest that EGF-induced internalization and degradation of EGF-EGF receptor complexes in HepG2 cells depend on EGF receptor tyrosine kinase activity.

Abstract
In this work, a simple, sensitive, and non-isotopic assay system for the detection of EGF-induced EGF receptor degradation and tyrosine phosphorylation in intact cells is described. In this system, boiling Laemmli sample buffer was directly added to cultured Chang liver cells to stop the reactions in the cells stimulated by EGF and to make whole-cell extracts. The effects of EGF concentration and incubation time on the EGF-induced degradation and tyrosine phosphorylation of EGF receptor were successfully determined using monoclonal anti-EGF receptor, recombinant anti-phosphotyrosine peroxidase conjugate, and enhanced chemiluminescence (ECL) Western blotting assay system. Unlike other assay systems, the use of radioisotopes was avoided in this determination. The assay system is linear up to 100 micrograms sample protein from whole-cell extracts for the detection of EGF receptor and EGF-induced autophosphorylation. This assay may be easily adopted for identification of other growth factor receptors and phosphotyrosine-containing proteins in intact cells, using appropriate anti-growth factor receptor antibodies.

Abstract
Epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor was detected in the human Chang liver and human hepatoma HepG2 cells. Both cell lines were found to be able to bind EGF. The expression of EGF receptor in Chang liver and HepG2 cells was 1.3 x 10(5) EGF receptors/cell and 1.8 x 10(5) EGF receptors/cell, respectively. In both cells, this receptor was identified by ECL Western blotting using monoclonal anti-EGF receptor antibody and by immunohistochemical assay using polyclonal anti-EGF receptor antibody. Some of internalized EGF was recycled in Chang liver cells, but not in HepG2 cells.

Abstract
Nail-fold microcirculation of 50 vocal cord polyp patients was observed and compared with hoarseness patients without vocal cord polyp. The results showed that peripheral microcirculation was disturbed in the vocal cord polyp patients. Histopathologic observation of 200 vocal cord polyp patients was made. It was found that principal pathologic change concentrated on the lamina propria mucosae of vocal cord and the most prominent manifestation was disturbance of topical microcirculation of Reinke's layer. In microcirculation aspect, the relationship between polyp of vocal cord and the Blood Stasis Syndrome was confirmed, and pathogenic mechanism of vocal cord polyp was discussed.

Abstract
The sensitivity of different brands of India ink for staining proteins blotted onto filter membranes is described. Proteins that are electro-blotted onto filter membranes show better retention than those dot-blotted alone. Higgins engrossing waterproof black ink No. 893 can detect protein at a concentration as low as 5 ng which is much more sensitive than Coomassie blue. The nitrocellulose membrane from S&S is ideal for blotting proteins and gives low levels of background staining. The sensitivity of protein staining is however, affected by the types of India ink, ink concentrations, staining times and membrane lots. India ink is also found to be useful for staining circulating immune complexes separated by SDS-PAGE and electro-blotted onto filter membranes.

Abstract
The adrenal hypoplasia congenita (AHC) and glycerol kinase (GK) loci are telomeric to the Duchenne muscular dystrophy locus in Xp21. We developed a pair of yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) contigs spanning at least 1.2 Mb and encompassing the region from the telomeric end of the Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) locus to beyond YHX39 (DXS727), including the genes for AHC and GK. The centromeric contig consists of 13 YACs reaching more than 600 kb from DMD through GK. The telomeric contig group consists of 8 YACs containing more than 600 kb including the markers YHX39 (DXS727) and QST-59 (DXS319). Patient deletion breakpoints in the region of the two YAC contigs define at least eight intervals, and seven deletion breakpoints are contained within these contigs. In addition to the probes developed from YAC ends, we have mapped eight Alu-PCR probes amplified from a radiation-reduced somatic cell hybrid, two anonymous DNA probes, and one Alu-PCR product amplified from a cosmid end, for a total of 26 new markers within this region of 2 Mb or less. One YAC in the centromeric contig contains an insert encompassing the minimum interval for GK deficiency defined by patient deletion breakpoints, and this clone includes all or part of the GK gene.

Abstract
During a period of 36 years, the rate of hysterectomy was 0.054% of all obstetric patients in our hospital, 0.0446% of cesarean section cases, and 0.005% of vaginal deliveries respectively. From 50 s to 80 s, the cesarean section rate greatly increased while the hysterectomy rate in parturition decreased. The indications for cesarean hysterectomy change from ruptured uterus, abruptio placenta and intrapartum infection to uterine atony highly increased placenta or myoma of the uterus. Cesarean hysterectomy rate due to splitting of uterine wound after cesarean section highly increased in 80 s. Bleeding for more than 1,000 ml during operation accounted for 62.7% of them. However, operative complication rate reached to 11.8%. To reduce cesarean hysterectomy rate, we suggest emphasizing maternal health care, use of uterine packing to lessen bleeding and careful management of operation as important means for reducing uterine incision wound splitting after cesarean section.

Abstract
Fifty-nine patients with idiopathic growth hormone deficiency were included in a Chinese multicentre trial of recombinant somatropin, 0.5-0.7 IU/kg/week s.c. given in six or seven divided doses. The height velocity increased from 2.8 +/- 1.0 cm/year to 13.1 +/- 2.5 cm/year during 1 year of treatment, and typical catch-up growth was observed. The increase in height SDS for chronological age was significant, but the increase in height SDS for bone age was not statistically significant. No adverse reactions to the treatment were recorded. Recombinant somatropin was shown to be very effective and safe during the first year of therapy in patients with growth hormone deficiency.

Abstract
The primary structures and the disulfide-bond pairings of two chromatographic forms A and B of a venom protein from white-faced hornet (Dolichovespula maculata) were determined. This protein, designated as antigen 5 (Dol m V), has 204-205 amino acid residues and it contains 4 disulfide bonds. This protein is an allergen in man but its biologic function in hornet is not yet known. Dol m V is found to have partial sequence similarity with pathogenesis-related proteins from tobacco and tomato leaves and with a sperm-coating protein from rat epididymis.

Abstract
Familial isolated GH deficiency type 1A (IGHD1A) results from deletion of both GH alleles. To facilitate detection of cases of IGHD1A, we have developed a rapid method that uses polymerase chain reaction amplification of small amounts of genomic DNA, digestion with a single restriction endonuclease, and visualization of DNA fragments after gel electrophoresis. Employing this method we have identified two subjects with IGHD1A among a cohort of seven Chinese subjects with severe growth retardation due to GHD.

Abstract
Using restriction endonuclease analysis and a human growth hormone cDNA probe, we have found a Chinese family with a human growth hormone gene deletion. Two affected sibs are homozygous for a deletion of approximately 7.1 kb of DNA, which contains the normal human growth hormone gene. The patients' parents and grandmothers are heterozygous for the deleted gene. Their grandfathers are normal and homozygous for the hGH-N gene. All of them have normal stature.

Abstract
Ultrastructure of cellular inclusions in the cerebral cortex and in renal tubule epithelial cells in a case of late infantile metachromatic leukodystrophy were investigated. Four patterns of shape were illustrated as multi-lamellated structure, zebra bodies, dense bodies and vacuoles with the two latter being more predominant in the renal tubule cells. Histochemical studies of the cellular deposits with toluidine blue and cresyl violet all revealed metachromatic in character. Significance of these findings and their pathogenesis were discussed.

Abstract
It has been postulated that polymerized human serum albumin may play a role in the infection of hepatocytes by hepatitis B virus, because both the envelope of hepatitis B virus (HBsAg) and hepatocytes exhibit binding activity for human serum albumin after cross-linking by glutaraldehyde. Since glutaraldehyde-dependent cross-linking of albumin molecules is not likely to occur in vivo, we considered the possibility that albumin may be polymerized by the action of transglutaminase enzymes present in plasma as activated factor XIII or released into plasma from tissues. Guinea pig liver transglutaminase covalently cross-linked human serum albumin molecules into dimers, trimers and polymers up to hexamers as shown by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in sodium dodecyl sulfate. HBsAg particles bound transglutaminase-cross-linked as well as glutaraldehyde-cross-linked human serum albumin as demonstrated by radioimmunoassay and immunoelectron microscopy. The binding was blocked by preincubation of HBsAg with transglutaminase- or glutaraldehyde-cross-linked human serum albumin, anti-HBs or monoclonal anti-pre-S2, but not by polymerized bovine or rat serum albumin or by monomeric human serum albumin. These data indicate that HBsAg particles contain specific binding sites for transglutaminase-cross-linked human serum albumin, but it remains to be determined whether the albumin polymers play a role in the attachment of hepatitis B virus to hepatocytes.
