Abstract
Diclofenac (DIC) is one of the most commonly prescribed non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and has been shown to cause oxidative stress and liver injury. The current study investigated protective effects of metformin against DIC-induced hepatic toxicity in both in vitro and in vivo models. For the in vitro study, HepG2 cells were exposed to DIC in the presence or absence of metformin. The effect of metformin on cell viability was evaluated by MTT assay. Oxidative stress parameters (malondialdehyde (MDA), total thiol molecules (TTM), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC)) were assessed. For the in vivo study, thirty-six male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 6 groups. These groups were normal saline, metformin (200 mg/kg), DIC (50 mg/kg/day), DIC + metformin (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg/day). Histopathological studies and serum levels of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), albumin, direct and total bilirubin were measured. Also, oxidative stress parameters were assessed in liver tissue. Furthermore, expression of glutathione peroxidase (GPX)-1, -3, and -4, catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD)-1, and -3 was examined using the real-time PCR method in hepatic tissue. In the in vitro study, metformin significantly prevented DIC-induced loss in cell viability in HepG2 cells. Metformin markedly reduced DIC-induced elevation of MDA levels and increased the TAC and TTM levels. In the in vivo study, metformin significantly prevented DIC-induced changes in hematological and histological markers. Administration of metformin significantly improved oxidative stress parameters in liver tissue. In addition, metformin increased the expression of antioxidant enzymes. Our results suggest that metformin exerts a significant protective effect against DIC-induced hepatic toxicity.

Abstract
In Covid-19 cases, elderly patients in long-term care facilities, children younger than five years with moderate symptoms, and patients admitted to ICU or with comorbidities are at a high risk of coinfection, as suggested by the evidence. Thus, in these patients, antibiotic therapy based on empirical evidence is necessary. Finding appropriate antimicrobial agents, especially with antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties, is a promising approach to target the virus and its complications, hyper-inflammation, and microorganisms resulting in co-infection. Moreover, indiscriminate use of antibiotics can be accompanied by Clostridioides difficile colitis, the emergence of resistant microorganisms, and adverse drug reactions, particularly kidney damage and QT prolongation. Therefore, rational administration of efficient antibiotics is an important issue. The main objective of the present review is to provide a summary of antibiotics with possible antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2 and anti-immunomodulatory effects to guide scientists for further research. Besides, the findings can help health professionals in the rational prescription of antibiotics in Covid-19 patients with a high risk of co-infection.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Ionizing radiation (IR) causes oxidative stress in kidneys and subsequently disrupts renal function. The use of green synthesized zinc nanoparticles (Zn NPs) with antioxidant properties may reduce the damage caused by IR. METHODS Thirty-six mice were kept in a standard situation and divided into 6 groups: 1: Control; 2-4: receiving 5 mg/kg, 10 mg/kg, and 25 mg/kg of Zn NPs with IR; 5: receiving 5 mg/kg of ZnSO4 with IR; and 6: IR. After 15 days, half of the animals in each group were sacrificed and their blood samples isolated to evaluate the plasma urea and creatinine levels. The kidneys were kept for evaluating the glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT) levels; on 21st day, the rest of the animals were sacrificed and their kidneys removed for histological assessments. RESULTS IR decreased GSH content, increased MDA level, and reduced SOD and CAT activity. On the other hand, Zn NPs at 10 and 25 mg/kg doses increased GSH, decreased MDA, and enhanced SOD and CAT activities. Zn NPs treatment at 10 and 25 mg/kg doses decreased the plasma urea and creatinine levels induced by IR. Moreover, Zn NPs significantly decreased the level of urea and creatinine in irradiated mice in comparison with IR alone (p < 0.05). The main histopathological results were tubular and glomerular atrophy and interstitial fibrosis in irradiated mice, while tubular degeneration and atrophy were less frequent in Zn NPs + IR group than in IR group alone. CONCLUSION Zn NPs treatment, especially at 25 mg/kg dose, attenuates the side effect of IR on kidneys through reducing oxidative stress factors, biochemical, and histopathological changes.

Abstract
Aim This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the association of HIF-1α expression with clinicopathological features and overall survival (OS) of patients with digestive system malignancies. Background Numerous studies have demonstrated that hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) is abnormally expressed in various solid tumors. However, the clinicopathological features and prognostic value of HIF-1α expression in patients with digestive system malignancies remain controversial. Methods A literature search in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases was performed to identify all relevant studies published in English until 15 October 2020. The pooled effect was calculated to evaluate the association between HIF-1α expression and clinicopathological features and overall survival in cancer patients. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) or hazard ratios (HRs) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using fixed- or random-effects model based on between-study heterogeneity. Results A total of 44 eligible studies with 5,964 patients were included. The pooled results indicated a positive association of HIF-1α overexpression with poor overall survival (OS) (HR=1.990, 95% CI: 1.615-2.453, p<0.001) and disease-free survival (DFS) (HR=1.90, 95% CI: 1.084-3.329, p=0.043). Meta-analysis results showed that HIF-1α level expression was significantly associated with positive lymph node metastasis (OR=1.869, 95% CI: 1.488-2.248, p<0.001), distance metastasis (OR=2.604, 95% CI: 1.500-4.519, p<0.001), tumor stage (OR=1.801, 95% CI: 1.437-2.257, p<0.001) and tumor size (OR=1.392. 95% CI: 1.068-1.815, p=0.014). Conclusion This meta-data suggest that HIF-1α expression might serve as an independent prognostic marker and a promising therapeutic target in patients with digestive system malignancies.

Abstract
The biologically synthesised tellurium nanoparticles (Te NPs) were applied in the fabrication of Te NP‐embedded polycaprolactone/gelatin (PCL/GEL) electrospun nanofibres and their antioxidant and in vivo wound healing properties were determined. The as‐synthesised nanofibres were characterised using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy‐dispersive X‐ray (EDX) spectroscopy and elemental mapping, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier‐transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The mechanical properties and surface hydrophobicity of scaffolds were investigated using tensile analysis and contact angle tests, respectively. The biocompatibility of the produced scaffolds on mouse embryonic fibroblast cells (3T3) was evaluated using MTT assay. The highest wound healing activity (score 15/19) was achieved for scaffolds containing Te NPs. The wounds treated with PCL/GEL/Te NPs had inflammation state equal to the positive control. Also, the mentioned scaffold represented positive effects on collagen formation and collagen fibre's horizontalisation in a dose‐dependent manner. The antioxidative potency of Te NP‐containing scaffolds was demonstrated with lower levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and catalase (∼3 times) and a higher level of glutathione (GSH) (∼2 times) in PCL/GEL/Te NP‐treated samples than the negative control. The obtained results strongly demonstrated the healing activity of the produced nanofibres, and it can be inferred that scaffolds containing Te NPs are suitable for wound dressing.

Abstract
The SARS-CoV-2 virus, caused a novel emerged coronavirus disease, is growing rapidly worldwide. Few studies have evaluated the efficacy and safety of Chloroquine (CQ), an old antimalarial drug, and Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) in the treatment of COVID-19 infection. HCQ is derived from CQ by adding a hydroxyl group into it and is a less toxic derivative of CQ for the treatment of COVID-19 infection because it is more soluble. This article summarizes pharmacokinetic properties and toxicity considerations for CQ and HCQ, drug interactions, and their potential efficacy against COVID-19. The authors also look at the biochemistry changes and clinical uses of CQ and HCQ, and supportive treatments following toxicity occurs. It was believed that CQ and HCQ may provide few benefits to COVID-19 patients. A number of factors should be considered to keep the drug safe, such as dose, in vivo animal toxicological findings, and gathering of metabolites in plasma and/or tissues. The main conclusion of this review is that CQ and HCQ with considered to their ADMET properties has major shortcomings and fully irresponsible.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE There are some reports of the effect of the gut microbiota on the central nervous system. The aim of this study was to find out the effect of probiotics on pentylenetetrazol (PTZ)-induced convulsions in mice. METHODS The mice were pretreated with probiotic powder (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, and Bifidobacterium bifidum) suspended in normal saline by intragastric gavage (IG-gavage) for 14 (group 1) or 28 (group 2) days prior to injection of PTZ (90 mg/kg, intraperitoneally). Diazepam (DZP, 1 mg/kg, intraperitoneally) was used as the reference drug. The latency and duration of induced convulsion, as well as mortality protection percentage were recorded 30 min after PTZ injection. For the next step, flumazenil (FLZ) was used to block the effect of DZP. RESULTS Pretreatment with probiotics for 14 or 28 days had not a significant effect on the latency and duration of seizures induced by PTZ. Neither seizure nor mortality was observed in co-administration of probiotics with DZP. FLZ pretreatment decreased the DZP-induced seizure latency; however, FLZ could not have such an effect in probiotic and DZP group. CONCLUSION Probiotics alone did not show anticonvulsant effects, but enhanced the anticonvulsant effect of DZP; this suggests the involvement of GABAergic system.

Abstract
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is known as the deadliest form of brain tumor. In addition, its high treatment resistance, heterogeneity, and invasiveness make it one of the most challenging tumors. Depression is a common psychological disorder among patients with cancer, especially GBM. Due to the high occurrence rates of depression in GBM patients and the overlap of molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of these diseases, finding antidepressants with antitumor effects could be considered as an affordable strategy for the treatment of GBM. Antidepressants exert their antitumor properties through different mechanisms. According to available evidence in this regard, some of them can eliminate the adverse effects resulting from chemo-radiotherapy in several cancers along with their synergistic effects caused by chemotherapy. Therefore, providing comprehensive insight into this issue would guide scientists and physicians in developing further preclinical studies and clinical trials, in order to evaluate antidepressants' antitumor potential. Considering that no narrative review has been recently published on this issue, specifically on these classes of drugs, we present this article with the purpose of describing the antitumor cellular mechanisms of three classes of antidepressants as follows: tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) in GBM.

Abstract
Guanine-rich DNA and RNA sequences can fold into noncanonical nucleic acid structures called G-quadruplexes (G4s). Since the discovery that these structures may act as scaffolds for the binding of specific ligands, G4s aroused the attention of a growing number of scientists. The versatile roles of G4 structures in viral replication, transcription, and translation suggest direct applications in therapy or diagnostics. G4-interacting molecules (proteins or small molecules) may also affect the balance between latent and lytic phases, and increasing evidence reveals that G4s are implicated in generally suppressing viral processes, such as replication, transcription, translation, or reverse transcription. In this review, we focus on the discovery of G4s in viruses and the role of G4 ligands in the antiviral drug discovery process. After assessing the role of viral G4s, we argue that host G4s participate in immune modulation, viral tumorigenesis, cellular pathways involved in virus maturation, and DNA integration of viral genomes, which can be potentially employed for antiviral therapeutics. Furthermore, we scrutinize the impediments and shortcomings in the process of studying G4 ligands and drug discovery. Finally, some unanswered questions regarding viral G4s are highlighted for prospective future projects. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: G-quadruplexes (G4s) are noncanonical nucleic acid structures that have gained increasing recognition during the last few decades. First identified as relevant targets in oncology, their importance in virology is now increasingly clear. A number of G-quadruplex ligands are known: viral transcription and replication are the main targets of these ligands. Both viral and cellular G4s may be targeted; this review embraces the different aspects of G-quadruplexes in both host and viral contexts.

Abstract
In this study, polycaprolactone/gelatin (PCL/GEL) electrospun nanofibers containing biogenic selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) and Se NPs/vitamin E (VE) with average diameters of 397.8 nm and 279.5 nm, respectively (as determined by SEM inspection) were prepared and their effect on wound healing was evaluated using in-vivo studies. The energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) mapping, TEM micrograph, and FTIR spectra of the prepared nanofibers strongly demonstrated well entrapment of Se NPs and VE into scaffolds. An amount of 57% Se NPs and 43% VE were gradually released from PCL/GEL/Se NPs/VE scaffold after 4 days immersion in PBS solution (pH 7.4). The both PCL/GEL/Se NPs and PCL/GEL/Se NPs/VE scaffolds supported 3T3 cell proliferation and attachment as confirmed by MTT assay and SEM imaging. Complete re-epithelialization, low level of edema and inflammatory cells in coordination with high level of oriented collagens demonstrated the wound healing activity of PCL/GEL/Se NPs/VE. Besides, significant antioxidant efficacy of PCL/GEL/Se NPs and PCL/GEL/Se NPs/VE scaffolds was demonstrated according to GSH and MDA assays. To sum up, the prepared PCL/GEL/Se NPs/VE scaffold in the present study represented suitable healing effect on animal model which candidate it for further studies.

Abstract
We report here a simple microwave irradiation method (850 W, 3 min) for the synthesis of palladium nanoparticles (Pd NPs) using ascorbic acid (as reducing agent) and sodium alginate (as stabilizer agent). The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray diffraction spectroscopy (XRD), UV-Visible spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. Antioxidant properties and cytotoxic effects of as-synthesized Pd NPs and Pd (II) acetate were also assessed. UV-Vis study showed the formation of Pd NPs with maximum absorption at 345 nm. From TEM analysis, it was observed that the Pd NPs had spherical shape with particle size distribution of 13-33 nm. Based on DPPH radical scavenging activity and reducing power assay, the antioxidant activities of Pd NPs were significantly higher than the Pd (II) acetate (p < 0.05). At the same concentration of 640 μg/mL, the scavenging activities were 32.9 ± 3.2% (Pd (II) acetate) and 27.2 ± 2.1% (Pd NPs). For A549 cells treated 48 h with Pd NPs, Pd (II) acetate, and cisplatin, the measured concentration necessary causing 50% cell death (IC50) was 7.2 ± 1.7 μg/mL, 32.1 ± 2.1 μg/mL, and 206.2 ± 3.5 μg/mL, respectively. On HSkMC cells, the IC50 of the Pd NPs (320 μg/mL) was higher compared to Pd (II) acetate (228.7 ± 3.6 μg/mL), which confirmed lower cytotoxicity of the Pd NPs.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Tramadol is widely being used in chronic pain management for improving patients' life quality and reducing trauma. Although it is listed in several medicinal guidelines, its use is controversial because of the conflicting results obtained in pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic studies. This multi-receptor drug acts as µ1 opioid receptor agonist, monoamine reuptake inhibitor, and inhibitor of ligand-gated ion channels and some special protein-coupled receptors. AREAS COVERED This review provides a comprehensive view on the pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and toxicity of tramadol with a deep look on its side effects, biochemical and pathological changes, and possible drug interactions. In addition, the main ways of tramadol poisoning management describe according to in vivo and clinical trial studies. EXPERT OPINION Given the broad spectrum of targets, increasing the cases of overdoses and toxicity, and probable drugs interaction, it is necessary to take another look at the pharmacology of tramadol. Regarding the adverse effects of tramadol on different tissues, especially the nervous system and liver tissue, more attentions to tramadol metabolites, their interaction with other drugs, and active agents seem critical. Seizure as the most cited effect of tramadol and its destructive effects on tissues would alleviate by co-administration with drugs with antioxidant properties.

Abstract
Introduction Dyslipidemia may be defined as increased levels of serum total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), triglycerides (TG), or a decreased serum high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) concentration. Dyslipidemia is an established risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). We aimed to investigate the association of dyslipidemia and CVD events among a population sample from Mashhad, in northeastern Iran. Material and methods This prospective cohort study comprised a population of 8698 men and women aged 35–65 years who were recruited from the Mashhad Stroke and Heart Atherosclerotic Disorder (MASHAD) study. Socioeconomic and demographic status, anthropometric parameters, laboratory evaluations, lifestyle factors, and medical history were gathered through a comprehensive questionnaire and laboratory and clinical assessment for all participants. Cox regression model and 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to evaluate the association of dyslipidemia and its components with CVD incidence. Results After 6 years of follow-up, 233 cases of CVD (including 119 cases of unstable angina [US], 74 cases of stable angina [SA], and 40 cases of myocardial infarction [MI]) were identified in the study population. Unadjusted baseline serum LDL-C, TC, and TG levels were positively associated with the risk of total CVD events among the entire population (HR: 1.54, 95% CI: 1.19–2; P-value< 0.01; HR: 1.53; 95% CI: 1.18–1.98; P < 0.01; HR: 1.57; 95% CI: 1.27–2.03; P < 0.01, respectively). However, after adjusting for confounding factors (age, body mass index [BMI], family history of CVD, smoking status [non-smoker, ex-smoker and current smoker], lipid lowering drug treatment, anti-hypertensive drug treatment, hypertension, healthy eating index [HEI], total energy intake, and presence of diabetes mellitus), a significant direct association only remained between TC and MI risk in men (HR: 2.71; 95%CI: 1.12–6.57; P-value< 0.05). Conclusion In the present study, TC baseline level was significantly associated with the risk of MI among men.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Clostridioides (previously Clostridium) difficile is a major growing cause of nosocomial diarrhoea known as C. difficile infection (CDI). This study investigated the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance patterns of C. difficile isolated from patients suffering from diarrhoea in Iran between 2016-2018. METHODS A total of 151 stool specimens were collected and were screened for the presence of C. difficile. Specimens were examined for toxins by culture, enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and PCR. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed for 12 antibiotics (metronidazole, vancomycin, clindamycin, tetracycline, erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, moxifloxacin, fusidic acid, piperacillin, piperacillin/tazobactam and rifampicin) by the disk diffusion method according to the guidelines of the CLSI, EUCAST and CA-SFM. RESULTS Of 151 stool specimens, 66 (43.7%) were positive for C. difficile by PCR, whereas 2 (1.3%) were only positive for C. difficile toxins based on EIA. A total of 292 clostridial isolates were obtained from specimens by culture, of which 133 (45.5%) were finally confirmed as C. difficile by PCR. Of 121 isolates resistant to at least one antibiotic, 107 (88.4%) were resistant to three or more antimicrobials and thus were defined as multidrug-resistant (MDR). Different and diverse resistance patterns to the antimicrobial drugs were seen among the isolates. CONCLUSION This is the first report of the isolation of C. difficile from different governmental hospitals of Iran and indicates that CDI might be an important nosocomial infection in different hospital wards. Moreover, this study provides a comprehensive picture of the MDR phenotype characteristics of C. difficile isolates in Iran.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serotonin 5-HT3 receptor antagonists such as ondansetron have been investigated to attenuate opioid withdrawal signs in studies. OBJECTIVE Therefore, we designed a randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled trial to evaluate this effect on opioid-addicted patients who were admitted to the orthopedic department for surgery due to bone fractures. METHODS Male adults who were addicted to opioids, aged 18 to 79 years were enrolled (n=96) and randomized into intravenous doses (4 & 8 mg) of ondansetron (n=32) and placebo (n=32). The vital signs, withdrawal symptoms and the frequency requirement of fentanyl were recorded during anesthesia, and opioid (pethidine) analgesic was received during the recovery period. Outcome parameters were analyzed for reduction of withdrawal symptoms in addicted adults. RESULTS We indicated that ondansetron demonstrated significant differences with few vital outcomes including systolic blood pressure (SBP) 20 (SBP3) and 50 min (SBP4) after injection of ondansetron during the period of surgery. Ondansetron could also significantly reduce the frequency requirement of fentanyl at 20 min (dose 3) in general anesthesia. Furthermore, requirement for further administration of opioid analgesic drugs such as pethidine was significantly reduced in the ondansetron groups. Objective opioid withdrawal scale (OOWS) results indicated that few clinical parameters including tremor, hot and cold flushes and anxiety were significantly attenuated in addicted patients who received ondansetron. CONCLUSION This study demonstrated supporting evidence for the beneficial treatment of ondansetron for the control of withdrawal symptoms and pain in addicted patients, and more clinical studies are suggested in this regard.

Abstract
Abstract
Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) are widely used volatile pesticides that have harmful effects on the liver in acute and chronic exposures. This review article summarises and discusses a wide collection of studies published over the last 40 years reporting on the effects of OPs on the liver, in an attempt to propose general mechanisms of OP hepatotoxicity and possible treatment. Several key biological processes have been reported as involved in OP-induced hepatotoxicity such as disturbances in the antioxidant defence system, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and mitochondrial and microsomal metabolism. Most studies show that antioxidants can attenuate oxidative stress and the consequent changes in liver function. However, few studies have examined the relationship between OP structures and the severity and mechanism of their action. We hope that future in vitro, in vivo, and clinical trials will answer the remaining questions about the mechanisms of OP hepatotoxicity and its management.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between dietary intake and biomarkers of cardiovascular risk in individuals with and without angiographically defined coronary artery disease. SUBJECTS/METHODS Coronary angiography was undertaken in 445 individuals who were divided into those with significant disease (>50% occlusion) (Angio+ (n=273)) and those with <50% coronary artery occlusion (Angio- (n=172)). Apparently healthy, non-symptomatic individuals (n=443) were considered as the control group. Dietary intake was assessed using a 24-h dietary recall method and dietary analysis was performed using Diet Plan 6 software. RESULTS Concentrations of starch, saturated fatty acids, polyunsaturated fatty acids, magnesium, iron and copper in the control group were less than those in the other groups (P<0.05), but after adjusting for total energy intake these differences were no longer apparent. The mean intake of protein, cholesterol, phosphorus, zinc, zinc/copper ratio, selenium, iodine, carotene, vitamin E, niacin, pantothene and pyridoxine was less in the control group compared with the other two groups (P<0.05), and the mean of sugar, fiber, transfatty acids, manganese, folate and vitamin C was higher in the control group than in other groups (P<0.05). Lipid profile values between the three groups did not differ significantly. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that the amount of intake of various nutrients can be considered as an independent risk factor for CAD. Further research on the relationship between CAD and nutrient intake, especially intake of essential micronutrients, is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Congenital chyloperitoneum is an uncommon clinical condition. A few cases of congenital chyloperitoneum in children have been described who were treated in a variety of methods. CASE PRESENTATION Congenital chyloperito was diagnosed in a 5-day-old baby boy with a significant abdominal distension. Due to the failed conservative managements by medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) enriched milk and partial parenteral nutrition (PPN), the authors tried platelet rich fibrin glue (PRFG) as an alternative choice which was applied through an already inserted intra-abdominal catheter. PRFG successfully stopped the lymph leakage from all over the small intestinal mesentery; thereby PRFG may be considered as an effective alternative treatment before surgical intervention. CONCLUSION Applying PRFG is an easy, safe, and effective alternative option that may be used to close the chylous ascites lymph leakage in children if conservative management with PPN fails.

Abstract
Interleukin (IL)-15, a Th1-related cytokine, triggers inflammatory cells' recruitment and increases the expression of interferon gamma (IFN-γ), which is an important cytokine in the immunity against brucellosis. Different single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been observed in the IL-15 gene, so this study aimed to investigate the probable association between these SNPs and susceptibility to brucellosis among Iranian patients. A total of 190 patients with brucellosis and 83 healthy milk farmers who consumed contaminated raw milk and dairy products from animals involved with brucellosis were included in this study. All the patients and the controls were genotyped for four IL-15 polymorphisms at positions 267, 367, 13687 and 14035 using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphisms. The 267C and 13687A alleles, haplotypes CGCT and CAAA and the 267CC and 13687AA genotypes were significantly more frequent in the controls than in the patients (P = 0.014, 0.03, 0.006, 0.024, 0.026 and 0.01, respectively), so the variation in the IL-15 gene may be one of the factors affecting the resistance to brucellosis. In contrast, the frequency of haplotypes CGCA and TACT was significantly higher in patients compared with controls (P = 0.015 and 0.007, respectively), and interestingly the last one was observed only in the patients; therefore, it may serve as a predictive factor for brucellosis. In conclusion, it could be suggested that IL-15 genetic variants can affect resistance or susceptibility to human brucellosis among Iranian patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Echinococcus granulosus, a zoonotic cestode parasite, causative agent of hydatid cyst is endemic in many parts of the world including the Middle East. Study on different aspects of this parasite is very important and valuable. However, working with adult worms which their habitat situated in the small intestine of canids, is dangerous and risky. Achieving such risky situation needs a controlled condition which is cultivation of the organisms in the laboratory. In this regard, cultivation of E. granulosus protoscoleces leading to adult worms was established in the laboratory for the first time in Iran. METHODS Under aseptic conditions a number of protoscoleces were cultivated in diphasic S.10E.H medium using CO2 incubator to produce adult worms. RESULTS Different forms of parasites including pre-segmentation stages (PS1 - PS4) and segmentation stages (S5-S8) and developing stages in segmented worms (S10-S11) were observed and evaluated in these medium. Finally adult worms contained four proglottids with a large and distinct genital pore were observed 50-55 days post cultivation. These parasites do not produce fertile eggs and conclusively do not have risk of hydatid disease transmission to the researchers. CONCLUSION The mentioned method for producing E. granulosus adult worms can open a new window for researches and facilitate working on different aspects of hydatidosis especially for diagnosis, protection and treatment studies.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare SSR with sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) responses in regeneration of injured peripheral nerves after nerve repair. We studied 10 male patients with a mean age of 26.7 years. All the patients had complete laceration of median or ulnar nerves. The patients were followed up at least for six months. SSR and SNAP assessment were performed every one to two months. Normal hands were used as controls. SSR was positive after 15.8 +/- 9.4 weeks (mean +/- 2 SD) and SNAP after 27.8 +/- 12.9 weeks (mean +/- 2 SD). The difference was statistically significant (P value < 0.001). This can be due to more rapid growth of sympathetic unmyelinated fibers relative to sensory myelinated fibers. This study also shows that recovery of the sudomotor activity following nerve repair is satisfactory in general and SSR can be used as a useful and sensitive method in the evaluation of sudomotor nerve regeneration.
