Abstract
RATIONALE Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment modality for schizophrenia. However, its antipsychotic-like mechanism remains unclear. OBJECTIVES To gain insight into the antipsychotic-like actions of ECT, this study investigated how repeated treatments of electroconvulsive seizure (ECS), an animal model for ECT, affect the behavioral and transcriptomic profile of a neurodevelopmental animal model of schizophrenia. METHODS Two injections of MK-801 or saline were administered to rats on postnatal day 7 (PN7), and either repeated ECS treatments (E10X) or sham shock was conducted daily from PN50 to PN59. Ultimately, the rats were divided into vehicle/sham (V/S), MK-801/sham (M/S), vehicle/ECS (V/E), and MK-801/ECS (M/E) groups. On PN59, prepulse inhibition and locomotor activity were tested. Prefrontal cortex transcriptomes were analyzed with mRNA sequencing and network and pathway analyses, and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analyses were subsequently conducted. RESULTS Prepulse inhibition deficit was induced by MK-801 and normalized by E10X. In M/S vs. M/E model, Egr1, Mmp9, and S100a6 were identified as center genes, and interleukin-17 (IL-17), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) signaling pathways were identified as the three most relevant pathways. In the V/E vs. V/S model, mitophagy, NF-κB, and receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) pathways were identified. qPCR analyses demonstrated that Igfbp6, Btf3, Cox6a2, and H2az1 were downregulated in M/S and upregulated in M/E. CONCLUSIONS E10X reverses the behavioral changes induced by MK-801 and produces transcriptional changes in inflammatory, insulin, and mitophagy pathways, which provide mechanistic insight into the antipsychotic-like mechanism of ECT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Flow-diverter treatment for previously stented aneurysms has been reported to be less effective and prone to complications. In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness and safety of flow diverters for recurrent aneurysms after stent-assisted coiling. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients who underwent flow-diverter placement for recurrent aneurysms after stent-assisted coiling between March 2015 and March 2019 were recruited. Clinical and radiographic characteristics and clinical and angiographic outcomes were retrospectively evaluated. RESULTS Among 133 patients who underwent flow-diverter insertion, 17 (male/female ratio = 5:12; mean age, 53.8 years) were treated for recurrent aneurysms after stent placement with (n = 16) or without (n = 1) coiling. Eight patients initially presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage; 7, with headache; and 2, with visual field defects. Angiographic morphology included large/giant saccular in 12 patients, dissecting in 2, fusiform in 1, traumatic pseudoaneurysm in 1, and ruptured blood blister-like aneurysm in 1. The duration between the first treatment and flow-diverter placement ranged from 2 weeks to 15 months (median, 6 months). Flow-diverter placement was successful in all cases without any complications. All patients had favorable outcomes (mRS, 0-2), without any newly appearing symptoms. Aneurysms were followed up with conventional angiography at least once in 6-18 months. Sixteen aneurysms showed complete occlusion, and 1 aneurysm was enlarged. CONCLUSIONS Results from this case series investigating flow-diverter placement for recurrent aneurysms after stent-assisted coiling suggested that the procedure is safe and effective. Further study in a larger population may be warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is uncertain how electroconvulsive therapy-induced generalized seizures exert their potent therapeutic effects on various neuropsychiatric disorders. Adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) plays a major role in maintaining metabolic homeostasis and activates autophagic processes via unc-51-like kinase (ULK1). Evidence supports the involvement of autophagy system in the action mechanisms of antidepressants and antipsychotics. The effect of electroconvulsive therapy on autophagy-related signaling requires further clarification. METHODS The effect of electroconvulsive seizure on autophagy and its association with the AMPK signaling pathway were investigated in the rat frontal cortex. Electroconvulsive seizure was provided once per day for 10 days (E10X), and compound C or 3-methyadenine was administered through an intracerebroventricular cannula. Molecular changes were analyzed with immunoblot, immunohistochemistry, and transmission electron microscopy analyses. RESULTS E10X increased p-Thr172-AMPKα immunoreactivity in rat frontal cortex neurons. E10X increased phosphorylation of upstream effectors of AMPK, such as LKB1, CaMKK, and TAK1, and of its substrates, ACC, HMGR, and GABABR2. E10X also increased p-Ser317-ULK1 immunoreactivity. At the same time, LC3-II and ATG5-ATG12 conjugate immunoreactivity increased, indicating activation of autophagy. An intracerebroventricular injection of the AMPK inhibitor compound C attenuated the electroconvulsive seizure-induced increase in ULK1 phosphorylation as well as the protein levels of LC3-II and Atg5-Atg12 conjugate. Transmission electron microscopy clearly showed an increased number of autophagosomes in the rat frontal cortex after E10X, which was reduced by intracerebroventricular treatment with the autophagy inhibitor 3-methyadenine and compound C. CONCLUSIONS Repeated electroconvulsive seizure treatments activated in vivo autophagy in the rat frontal cortex through the AMPK signaling pathway.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the most effective treatment for mood disorders. Accumulating evidence has suggested the important role of circadian genes in mood disorders. However, the effects of ECT on circadian genes have not been systemically investigated. METHODS We examined the expression and daily oscillation of major circadian genes in the rat frontal cortex after electroconvulsive seizure (ECS). RESULTS Firstly, mRNA and protein level were investigated at 24 hr after single ECS (E1X) and repeated ECS treatements for 10 days (E10X), which showed more remarkable changes after E10X than E1X. mRNA expression of Rorα, Bmal1, Clock, Per1, and Cry1 was decreased, while Rev-erbα expression was increased at 24 hr after E10X compared to sham. The proteins showed similar pattern of changes. Next, the effects on oscillation and rhythm properties (mesor, amplitude, and acrophase) were examined, which also showed more prominent changes after E10X than E1X. After E10X, mesor of Rorα, Bmal1, and Cry1 was reduced, and that of Rev-erbα was increased. Five genes, Rev-erbα, Bmal1, Per1, Per2, and Cry2, showed earlier acrophase after E10X. CONCLUSION The findings suggest that repeated ECS induces reduced expression and phase advance of major circadian genes in the in vivo rat frontal cortex.

Abstract
Numerous genetic alterations of HSA 11q13 are found frequently in several cancer types, including breast cancer (BC). The 11q13 locus harbors FADS2 encoding Δ6 desaturation which is not functional in several cancer cell lines, including hormone positive MCF7 BC cells. In vitro, the non-functional FADS2 activity unmasks 18:2n-6 elongation to 20:2n-6 and Δ5 desaturation by FADS1 to yield 5Z,11Z,14Z-20:3 (sciadonic acid) rather than 5Z,8Z,11Z,14Z-20:4 (arachidonic acid). In this pilot study we aimed to determine whether 5,11,14-20:3 appears in vivo in hormone positive human BC tissue. Fatty acids were profiled in surgically removed human breast tumor and adjacent normal tissue (n = 9). Sciadonic acid was detected in three of nine breast tumor samples and was below detect limits in normal breast tissue. The internal Δ8 double bond of arachidonic acid is required for normal eicosanoid synthesis but is missing in sciadonic acid. This pilot study demonstrates for the first time in vivo sciadonic acid in hormone positive BC tissue, warranting a larger survey study to further evaluate its appearance and the functional implications.

Abstract
Clozapine, a representative atypical antipsychotic, has superior efficacy compared to other antipsychotic agents and is used for the treatment of severe psychotic disorders. Therefore, studies on its mechanisms of action are important for understanding the mechanisms of therapeutic approaches to psychosis. Adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a serine-threonine kinase that plays a major role in maintaining metabolic homeostasis. Unc-51-like kinase 1 (ULK1) and Beclin1 are downstream substrates of AMPK and activate the autophagic process. In this study, we examined the effects of clozapine on the AMPK-ULK1-Beclin1 signaling pathway and autophagy in the frontal cortex of the rat. Clozapine (10mg/kg) administration increased the immunoreactivity of p-Thr172-AMPKα in the rat frontal cortex at 1, 2, and 4h after injection, as we previously reported. The immunoreactivity of p-Ser317-ULK1 and p-Ser93-Beclin1 was also increased at 2 and 4h after clozapine injection. At the same time, the immunoreactivity of LC3-II and the Atg5-Atg12 conjugate, which indicate activation of autophagy, was increased. Transmission electron microscopy clearly showed an increase in autophagosome number in the rat frontal cortex at 2h after clozapine injection. To investigate the role of AMPK in clozapine-induced autophagy, the effects of intracerebroventricular injection of compound C, an AMPK inhibitor, were examined. Administration of compound C attenuated the clozapine-induced increase in ULK1 and Beclin1 phosphorylation, as well the protein levels of LC3-II and the Atg5-Atg12 conjugate in the frontal cortex. In summary, the results showed that clozapine activates autophagy through the AMPK-ULK1-Beclin1 signaling pathway in the frontal cortex of the rat.

Abstract
Branched chain fatty acids (BCFA) are components of common food fats and are major constituents of the normal term human newborn GI tract. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) have been suggested to reduce the risk and development of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD); however, little is known about the influence of BCFA on inflammation. We investigated the effect of BCFA on interleukin (IL)-8 and NF-κB production in a human intestinal epithelial cell line (Caco-2). Cells were pre-treated with specific BCFA, or DHA, or EPA, and then activated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Both anteiso- and iso- BCFA reduce IL-8. Anteiso-BCFA more effectively suppressed IL-8 than iso-BCFA in LPS stimulated Caco-2 cells. However BCFA in general were less effective than DHA or EPA. Activated BCFA-treated cells expressed less of the cell surface Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4) compared to controls. These are the first data to show the reduction of pro-inflammatory markers in human cells mediated by BCFA.

Abstract
Unraveling the complex network of neural circuits that form the nervous system demands tools that can manipulate specific circuits. The recent evolution of genetic tools to target neural circuits allows an unprecedented precision in elucidating their function. Here we describe two general approaches for achieving circuit specificity. The first uses the genetic identity of a cell, such as a transcription factor unique to a circuit, to drive expression of a molecule that can manipulate cell function. The second uses the spatial connectivity of a circuit to achieve specificity: one genetic element is introduced at the origin of a circuit and the other at its termination. When the two genetic elements combine within a neuron, they can alter its function. These two general approaches can be combined to allow manipulation of neurons with a specific genetic identity by introducing a regulatory gene into the origin or termination of the circuit. We consider the advantages and disadvantages of both these general approaches with regard to specificity and efficacy of the manipulations. We also review the genetic techniques that allow gain- and loss-of-function within specific neural circuits. These approaches introduce light-sensitive channels (optogenetic) or drug sensitive channels (chemogenetic) into neurons that form specific circuits. We compare these tools with others developed for circuit-specific manipulation and describe the advantages of each. Finally, we discuss how these tools might be applied for identification of the neural circuits that mediate behavior and for repair of neural connections.

Abstract
Intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of ouabain, a specific Na/K-ATPase inhibitor, induces behavioral changes in rats in a putative animal model of mania. The binding of ouabain to Na/K-ATPase affects signaling molecules in vitro, including ERK1/2 and Akt, which promote protein translation. We have also reported that ERK1/2 and Akt in the brain are involved in the ouabain-induced hyperactivity of rats. In this study, rats were given an ICV injection of ouabain, and then their frontal cortices were examined to determine the effects of ouabain on the mTOR/p70S6K/S6 signaling pathway and protein translation, which are important in modifications of neural circuits and behavior. Rats showed ouabain-induced hyperactivity up to 8h following injection, and increased phosphorylation levels of mTOR, p70S6K, S6, eIF4B, and 4E-BP at 1, 2, 4, and 8h following ouabain injection. Immunohistochemical analyses revealed that increased p-S6 immunoreactivity in the cytoplasm of neurons by ouabain was evident in the prefrontal, cingulate, and orbital cortex. These findings suggested increased translation initiation in response to ouabain. The rate of protein synthesis was measured as the amount of [(3)H]-leucine incorporation in the cell-free extracts of frontal cortical tissues, and showed a significant increase at 8h after ouabain injection. These results suggest that ICV injection of ouabain induced activation of the protein translation initiation pathway regulated by ERK1/2 and Akt, and prolonged hyperactivity in rats. In conclusion, protein translation pathway could play an important role in ouabain-induced hyperactivity in a rodent model of mania.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The eradication rates following standard triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection are declining worldwide. Recent studies have shown that sequential therapy for H. pylori infection yields high cure rates. AIM To compare the efficacy and tolerability of a sequential regimen as first-line treatment of H. pylori infection with a standard triple regimen. METHODS A total of 348 naïve H. pylori-infected patients from six hospitals in Korea were assigned randomly to standard triple or sequential therapy groups. Standard triple therapy consisted of 20 mg of rabeprazole, 1 g of amoxicillin and 500 mg of clarithromycin, twice daily for 7 days. Sequential therapy consisted of a 5-day dual therapy (20 mg of rabeprazole and 1 g of amoxicillin, twice daily) followed by a 5-day triple therapy (20 mg of rabeprazole, 500 mg of clarithromycin, and 500 mg of metronidazole, twice daily). RESULTS The intention-to-treat (ITT) and per-protocol (PP) eradication rates were 62.2% (95% CI 54.8-69.6%) and 76.0% (95% CI 68.5-83.5%) in the standard triple group, and 77.8% (95% CI 71.4-84.2%) and 87.9% (95% CI 82.3-93.5%) in the sequential group, respectively. The eradication rate was significantly higher in the sequential group compared with the standard triple group in both the ITT and PP populations (P = 0.002 and P = 0.013 respectively), whereas the incidence of adverse events was similar. CONCLUSIONS Ten-day sequential therapy is more effective and equally tolerated for eradication of H. pylori infection compared with standard triple therapy. Sequential therapy may have a role as first-line treatment for H. pylori infection.

Abstract
Cyclosporine A (CsA), an immunosuppressant and calcineurin inhibitor, induces hyperlipidemia in humans and animals. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is involved in metabolic homeostasis and lipid metabolism through modulating downstream molecules acetyl CoA carboxylase (ACC) and 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoAR). AMPK activity is regulated by the phosphorylation at the Thr-172 residue by its upstream liver kinase B 1 (LKB1), Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase β (CaMKKβ) or transforming growth-factor-β-activated kinase 1 (TAK1). AMPK can be deactivated through dephosphorylation by protein phosphatase 2Cα (PP2Cα). In this study, we demonstrated that phosphorylation at Thr-172-AMPK increased with a concurrent increase in the phosphorylation of Ser-431-LKB1 and Thr-184/187-TAK1 in the rat hippocampus at 5 h after an intraperitoneal CsA (50 mg/kg) injection. CsA did not affect the phosphorylation of Thr-196-Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase 4 (CaMK4) and the amount of PP2Cα. An increased phosphorylation of Ser-79-ACC and Ser-872-HMG-CoAR was also observed. In conclusion, our data indicate that CsA activates the AMPK pathway in the rat hippocampus, which suggests that CsA affects the regulatory signaling pathway of lipid metabolism in the rat brain.

Abstract
Regulated expression of immediate early genes (IEGs) in the brain reflects neuronal activity in response to various stimuli and recruits specific gene programs involved in long-term neuronal modification and behavioral alterations. Repeated electroconvulsive seizure (ECS) treatment reduces the expression level of several IEGs, such as c-fos, which play important roles in psychostimulant-induced behavioral changes. In this study, we investigated the effects of repeated ECS treatment on the basal expression level of IEGs and its effects on cocaine-induced activation of IEGs and locomotor activity in rats. Repeated ECS treatment for 10days (E10×) reduced Egr1, Egr2, Egr3, and c-fos mRNA and protein levels in the rat frontal cortex at 24h after the last ECS treatment, and these changes were evident in the neuronal cells of the prefrontal cortex. In particular, downregulation of Egr1 and c-fos was evident until 5days after the last ECS treatment. Moreover, E10× pretreatment attenuated the cocaine-induced increase in Egr1, Egr2, and c-fos expression in the rat frontal cortex, whereas phosphorylation of ERK1/2, one of the representative upstream activators of these genes, increased significantly following cocaine treatment. Additionally, E10× pretreatment attenuated the increase in locomotor activity in response to a cocaine injection. In conclusion, repeated ECS treatment reduced the expression and inducibility of Egrs and c-fos, which could attenuate the response of the brain to psychostimulants.

Abstract
Intracerebroventricular (ICV) injection of ouabain, a specific Na-K ATPase inhibitor, induces behavioral changes in rats resembling the manic phenotypes of bipolar disorder. The binding of ouabain to the Na-K ATPase affects signal events in vitro including Akt, a possible molecular target of mood disorders. However, the effects of ouabain on Akt in the brain need further clarification. In this study, we investigated changes in the phosphorylation state of Akt in the rat brain after ICV injection of ouabain. Consistent with our previous report, the locomotor activity of rats within 30 min after ouabain ICV injection changed according to the dose with higher doses of ouabain, 0.5 and 1 mM, inducing significant hyperactivity. In addition, ouabain administration induced a dose-dependent increase in the immunoreactivity of p-Akt (Ser473) in the frontal cortex, striatum, and hippocampus after 30 min, and reached statistical significance with 1mM of ouabain. Phosphorylation of GSK-3beta (Ser9), FOXO1 (Ser256), and eNOS (Ser1177), which are downstream molecules of Akt, was also increased in a dose-dependent manner within the same brain regions. Moreover, hyperactivity was seen for 8h after a single 1mM injection of ouabain and increased phosphorylation of Akt (Ser473), GSK-3beta (Ser9), FOXO1 (Ser256), and eNOS (Ser1177) was also observed in the cortex, striatum, and hippocampus. Thus, intrabrain injection of ouabain induces activation of Akt signaling accompanied by hyperactivity, suggesting the possible role of Akt in ouabain rat model of mania.

Abstract
Protein kinase C (PKC) has been suggested as a molecular target related to the pathogenetic and therapeutic mechanisms of mood disorders in which electroconvulsive seizure (ECS) is effective. However, the reports concerning the effects of ECS on PKC are anecdotal and need further clarification. In this study, we examined the effects of ECS treatment on the phosphorylation of PKC substrates, including GAP-43, MARCKS, and neurogranin. Immunoblot using anti-p-PKC substrate antibodies revealed that a single ECS treatment induced temporal changes in the phosphorylation level of PKC substrates in rat brain, reflecting the effects on PKC activity. Phosphorylation of GAP-43 and MARCKS, representative PKC substrates related to synaptic remodeling, increased from 5 to 30 min, after a transient decrease at 0 min immediately after ECS, and returned to basal levels at 60 min in rat frontal cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum. Phosphorylation of neurogranin, another PKC substrate, showed a similar pattern of temporal changes in the frontal cortex and hippocampus. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that p-GAP-43 and p-MARCKS were densely stained throughout the neuronal cells of the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, and the Purkinje cells of cerebellum, after ECS treatment. Brief and transient activation of PKC may be translated into long-term biochemical changes, resulting in synaptic plasticity. Taken together, the acute effects of ECS on PKC activity, which could be an underpinning of long-term biochemical changes induced by ECS, may contribute to understand the molecular mechanism of ECS.

Abstract

The binding of ouabain to Na-K ATPase is known to affect signaling molecules in vitro such as extracellular signal-regulated kinase1/2 (ERK1/2). Although ERK has been suggested to be related to the behavioral alterations induced by various psychotomimetics, the effect of ouabain on ERK in the brain related to behavioral changes has not been examined. After ICV injection of ouabain in rats, we investigated changes in the phosphorylation of mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase1/2 (MEK1/2), ERK1/2, and p90 ribosomal s6 kinase (p90RSK) in rat striatum, frontal cortex, and hippocampus along with changes in locomotor activity. Ouabain induced the following biphasic dose-dependent changes in locomotor activity: no change with 10(-6) M, a statistically significant decrease with 10(-5) M, no change with 10(-4) M, and a statistically significant increase with 0.5x10(-3) and 10(-3) M. The phosphorylation level of MEK1/2, ERK1/2, and p90RSK in rat striatum showed dose-dependent changes similar to those observed in locomotor activity with relatively high correlation. The phosphorylation of these molecules in rat frontal cortex and hippocampus also changed in a similar dose-dependent pattern. Taken together, ouabain induced biphasic dose-dependent changes in locomotor activity and the phosphorylation of the ERK1/2 pathway. These findings suggest a possible relationship between ouabain-induced behavioral changes and ERK activity in the brain and suggest an important role of ERK in regulating locomotor activity and mood state.

Abstract
Marine copepods have recently been recognized as important organisms in ecotoxicity testing for regulatory purposes. The harpacticoid copepod Tigriopus japonicus has a wide geographical distribution along the coast in the Western Pacific including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. This study evaluated the acute toxicity sensitivity profile of Tigriopus japonicus against 12 common toxic substances including six endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), three biocides and three trace metals. Through standard acute toxicity test procedures, toxicity endpoints LC(50), LC(10), and no observed effect concentration (NOEC) of each chemical were obtained. Although T. japonicus depicted different sensitivities towards different chemicals, a dose-response relationship was consistent in all cases. T. japonicus was particularly sensitive to most of the EDCs, but relatively less sensitive to molinate (a thiocarbate herbicide). Across all tested chemicals, tributyltin (TBT) was the most toxic to the copepod with the LC(50), LC(10), and NOEC of 0.05, 0.03, and 0.02 mg/L, respectively. A comparison made with available data on acute toxicities of these chemicals to other marine copepod species revealed that T. japonicus is generally more sensitive to EDCs and in particular to TBT. We, therefore, strongly advocate that T. japonicus shall be adopted as a benchmark marine species for routine ecotoxicity testing and ecotoxicological studies in Western Pacific coasts.

Abstract
The effects of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) with other fatty acids on the fatty acid composition of egg yolk and on egg quality characteristics were studied in 5 groups: 1) CLA 0% (control), 2) CLA 2%, 3) CLA 2%+oleic acid (OA) 2% (CLA+OA), 4) CLA 2%+linoleic acid (LA) 2% (CLA+LA), and 5) CLA 2%+alpha-linolenic acid (LNA) 2% (CLA+LNA). Some parameters of egg quality such as shell thickness, shell strength, yolk color, yolk index, egg diameter, and Haugh units were aggravated when CLA was fed alone, but the quality was improved when CLA was combined with some other fatty acids. The egg production rate, which was decreased by feeding CLA alone, was improved by co-supplementation with LA or OA. An increase in CLA content was observed in all the dietary groups fed CLA for 2 wk. Feeding hens with CLA+LNA led to a linear increase in CLA content in the egg yolk after the fourth week of the feeding trial. Egg yolks from hens given CLA had considerably higher amounts of saturated fatty acids and lower amounts of monounsaturated fatty acids than egg yolks from the control group. The pattern of change in CLA concentration during the feeding trial was similar to the level of C18:0, which was inversely correlated with the level of C18:1. The unsaturated fatty acid co-supplementation strategy applied in this study offers insight into the mechanism of CLA accumulation in the egg yolk without apparent adverse effects on egg quality and egg production.

Abstract
The purpose of our study was to determine the effect of vascular occlusion on neuromuscular activation and/or the energy metabolic characteristics of the quadriceps femoris (QF) muscles during muscle contractions. Seven men participated in the study. An occlusion cuff was attached to the proximal end of the right thigh, so that blood flow in the anterior medial malleolar artery was reduced to approximately 88 % of the non-occluded flow. Muscle functional magnetic resonance imaging and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) were carried out before and immediately after 5 sets of 10 repetitions of knee extension exercises at 50 % of the 10 repetitions maximum, from which transverse relaxation times (T2) and maximal force were measured, respectively. Integrated electromyography (iEMG) activity was recorded from the belly of the rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, and vastus medialis muscles during MVC and repetitive exercises. The percentage change in T2 was significantly increased for individual QF muscles, and there was a significant increase in iEMG activity over the 5 sets of repetitive exercises under conditions of vascular occlusion, but there was no significant effect on isometric force and iEMG activity during MVC. These results are consistent with the idea that there is greater osmolite accumulation during exercise with occlusion, although increased neural activation cannot be ruled out.

Abstract
Since its discovery in 1962 by Ritossa, the heat shock response has been extensively studied by a number of investigators to understand the molecular mechanism underlying the cellular response to heat stress. The most well characterized heat shock response is induction of the heat shock proteins that function as molecular chaperones and exert cell cycle regulatory and anti-apoptotic activities. While most investigators have focused their studies on the toxic effects of heat stress in organisms such as severe heat stress-induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, the cellular response to fever-ranged mild heat stress has been rather underestimated. However, the cellular response to mild heat stress is likely to be more important in a physiological sense than that to severe heat stress because the body temperature of homeothermic animals increases by only 1-2 degrees C during febrile diseases. Here we provide information that mild heat stress does have some beneficial role in organisms via positively regulating cell proliferation and differentiation, and immune response in mammalian cells.

Abstract
Soil blocks from 18 paddy fields around three Korean nuclear power plant sites were put into lysimeters. Greenhouse experiments were carried out to investigate the (137)Cs transfer from these paddy soils to rice plants for its deposition at different growth stages. A solution of (137)Cs was applied to the flooded lysimeters at 2-3 different stages. The applied (137)Cs was mixed with the topsoil only at the pre-transplanting application. The transfer was quantified with a transfer factor based on the unit-area deposition (TF(a), m(2)kg(-1)-dry). The TF(a) in the pre-transplanting application showed a remarkable variation with the soils. However, the differences in the mean values among the study sites were not statistically significant. The straw TF(a) was 2-3 times higher than the corresponding seed value. The early-tillering stage and booting stage applications resulted in a higher transfer than the pre-transplanting application by factors of, on an average, 2 and 16 for the straws, and 3 and 25 for the hulled seeds, respectively. The (137)Cs transfer was found to correlate negatively with the soil pH and positively with the organic matter content. Based on the present results, the representative (137)Cs TF(a) values for the rice are proposed for use in the whole of Korea for the deposition at three different growth stages.

Abstract
This paper focuses on the evaluation of organic and detergent degradation in a combined Ozone/UF system for domestic laundry wastewater reclamation. Formation of by-product was investigated by GC/MS for the reclaimed water. Ozone was injected into the raw wastewater in a 10 L contact tank and the wastewater was circulated through the membrane module for inner pressurized cross-flow filtration. The concentrate was returned back to the contact tank. The membrane used in this experiment was hollow fiber polysulfone UF membrane with MWCO 10,000. It has an effective filtration area of 0.06 m2. The experiment was carried out with intermittent ozone injection, 5 min injection and 10 min idling. Ozone was dosed at the concentration of 1.5 mg/L. The flux of the UF could be maintained at 0.24 m/d under filtration pressure 40-45 kPa and water temperature, 20-22 degrees C. The organic removal efficiency by the system was 90% in terms of COD. Ozone was considerably effective to degrade organics in the wastewater. Molecular weight of organics in the raw waste was mostly greater than 10,000 (72% of 950 mgCOD/L). However 86% of effluent COD (94-100 mg/L) was composed of organics smaller than MWCO 500 by ozone injection. No harmful by-products by ozone contact were detected from the analysis of treated water using GC/MS. It was identified that residual organics in the treated water were 1,1'-Oxybisbenzene, Octadecanoic acid, Squalene and Benzenmethanol, etc., which were additives contained originally in the detergent. Consequently the reclaimed water quality could be estimated safe enough to recycle for the rinsing cycle in a washing machine.

Abstract
PURPOSE Phyllodes tumors are fibroepithelial mammary lesions that tend to behave in a benign fashion but may undergo sarcomatous transformation. They account for 0.3 to 0.5 percent of all breast tumors. Their behavior is not well understood by many clinicians. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the clinical, radiologic, and pathologic finding and treatment modality of 31 patients of phyllodes tumor diagnosed at the Breast Clinic, Gachon Medical School Gil Medical Center between July 1992 and July 2000. RESULTS Pathologically, 6 patients (19.3%) had malignant tumor and 25 patients (80.7%) had benign lesions. All were women with average age of 36 years. The patients with malignant tumors tended to be older and had larger tumors and shorter duration. For preoperative diagnosis, we used mammography, sonography, and MIBI Scintimammography, fine needle aspiration cytology and biopsy. All these diagnostic methods suggested the diagnosis of phyllodes tumors in only 8 cases (26%). All patients received surgical treatment: excision in 21 cases, wide excision in 3 cases, simple mastectomy in 5 cases, and simple mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection 2 cases. One patient with malignant tumor, two patients with borderline tumor and three patients with benign tumor experienced recurrence (19.3%). CONCLUSION None of the clinical or radiologic characteristics was useful in predicting for phyllodes tumor. Phyllodes tumors were difficult to make proper preoperative diagnoses and to differ malignant tumor from a benign one. This led to a simple excision and resulted in high local recurrence. We suggest that the initial or subsequent wide excision is an appropriate surgery to decrease the recurrence.

Abstract
A new method of repairing Achilles tendons, which uses a small medial skin incision with a Bunnel-type suture, was performed on 14 patients, and the clinical results were found satisfying. In order to restore the Achilles tendon to its original length, restore tensile strength in the suture site, and minimize injury to the sural nerve, an operative procedure has been devised which uses a limited open repair with a Bunnel-type suture. We followed 14 patients who had undergone the new procedure for a mean interval of 26 months after the injury. They returned to work in six weeks and to playing sports in 25 weeks. There were no cases of late rerupture nor injuries to the sural nerve. This technique approximated the preinjury length and resting tension of the musculo-tendinous apparatus and minimized sural nerve injury.

Abstract
The cDNA clone, CanMADS1, was isolated from young flower buds of the hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) by screening a cDNA library using the OsMADS1 rice MADS-box gene as a probe. We used a yeast two-hybrid screening method to investigate interaction partners of the protein product of CanMADS1. A MADS-box gene, CanMADS6, was isolated from young flower buds using the region containing the K domain and 15 amino acid residues of the C-terminal region of CanMADS1 as a bait. CanMADS1 and CanMADS6 showed high amino acid sequence similarities to members of the AGL2 subfamily and the SQUA subfamily, respectively. CanMADS1 transcript was expressed in flower buds and fruits, and the transcription signal was the strongest in the stage of the fruit set (2 d after anthesis). CanMADS6 showed the same expression pattern as CanMADS1. CanMADS1 and CanMADS6 were not expressed in leaves. These results suggest that a regulatory role for flower and fruit development of the hot pepper may be accomplished through an interaction of the protein products of the two MADS-box genes, CanMADS1 and CanMADS6.

Abstract
A chemoenzymatic approach was developed to prepare sucrose-containing aromatic polymers. The protease from Bacillus licheniformis catalyzed the transesterification of sucrose with a diester of terephthalic acid in pyridine to give the mono- and diester products. At 45 degrees C, >70% of sucrose was consumed after 1 day and sucrose diester began to form after 6 days when >95% of sucrose had been converted to sucrose monoester. The final yield of sucrose diester after 20 days was 13.8%. The sucrose monoester was identified as sucrose 1'-terephthalate and the diester products consisted of sucrose 6,1'-diterephthalate and sucrose 6',1'-diterephthalate in a ratio of 2:1. The sucrose diester products were polymerized with ethylene-glycol and ethylene-diamine to give poly(ethylene-terephthalate) and poly(ethylene-terephthalamide), with sucrose contained in the polymer backbone. The polycondensation reactions were carried out in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) at 70 degrees C using zinc acetate as a catalyst. The sucrose-containing polyester and polyamide were obtained at 65% yield for 24 h and at 73% yield for 12 h, respectively. End-group analysis of the polymers by (13)C-NMR or (1)H-NMR in DMSO provided a number average molecular weight of 3200 and 4300 Da, respectively. Structural analyses of the polymers were performed with (1)H-NMR, (13)C-NMR, and FTIR. On the basis of (13)C-NMR, acylation of the C1', C6, and C6' hydroxyls were maintained in the polymer backbones.

Abstract
After intravenous administration of AS 2-006A, 20, 50, and 90 mg/kg, to rats, the pharmacokinetic parameters, terminal half-life (69.8-86. 6 min), mean residence time (56.2-75.2 min), apparent volume of distribution at steady state (809-1040 mL/kg), and total body clearance (11.4-11.9 mL/min/kg), were dose-independent. After topical application of 0.5 or 1% AS 2-006A ointment, 300 mg, to abraded rat skin, the absorbed amounts were dose (0.5 and 1%) and time (30, 60, 120, 240, 360 and 480 min)-independent; the value was approximately 20%. The tissue-to-plasma ratios of AS 2-006A were greater than unity in all rat tissues studied, except in the muscle and large intestine. AS 2-006A was stable for up to 24 h incubation in rat plasma, and human plasma and urine; however, it seemed not to be stable in rat urine; the disappearance rate constant was 0.0218/h. AS 2-006A reached equilibrium fast between plasma and blood cells, and the equilibrium plasma/blood cells partition ratios were independent of the initial rabbit blood concentrations of AS 2-006A, 10, 20, and 50 microg/mL; the mean values were in the range of 2.38-2.75 for three rabbit blood. The protein binding of AS 2-006A to rat plasma was high, as the drug was under detection limit in the filtrate at the plasma concentrations of the drug, ranging from 7.21 to 228 microg/mL.

Abstract
An efficient method is described for the simultaneous enantiomeric separation of 18 different racemic 2-hydroxy acids for the determination of their absolute configurations. It involves the conversion of each enantiomer into a diastereomeric O-trifluoroacetylated (S)-(+)-3-methyl-2-butyl ester for the direct separation by achiral dual-capillary column gas chromatography with subsequent identification and determination of its chirality by retention index (I) library matching. The enantiomers of each acid were well separated with high resolution values (R > or = 1.4) on DB-5 and DB-17 columns of different polarity. When temperature-programmed I values of 2-hydroxy acid enantiomers as their diastereomeric derivatives were measured on both columns, the I values were characteristic of each enantiomer. Simple I matching with the reference values was thus useful in cross-checking each acid enantiomer for the identification and chiral discrimination. When applied to urine samples, the present method allowed positive identification of most of the spiked 2-hydroxy acids from normal urine and for endogenous (S)-lactic acid and (S)-2-hydroxybutyric acid from a clinical urine specimen.

Abstract
An efficient organic acid profiling and pattern recognition method is described for the correlation between urinary organic acid profiles and uterine cervical cancer. After methoximation of keto acids in alkalinized urine samples, all free organic acids were recovered by a dual solid-phase extraction procedure, followed by conversion to tert.-butyldimethylsilyl derivatives for the profiling analysis by dual-capillary column gas chromatography (GC) with subsequent screening for acids by retention index (I) library matching. A total of 50 organic acids were positively identified in urine samples (0.25 ml) from 12 uterine myoma (benign tumor group) and 14 uterine cervical cancer (malignant tumor group) patients studied. When the GC profiles were simplified to their corresponding organic acid I spectra in bar graphical form, characteristic patterns were obtained for each average of benign and malignant tumor groups. Stepwise discriminant analysis performed on the GC data selected 16 acids as the variables discriminating between the two groups. Canonical discriminant analysis applied to these 16 variables correctly classified 26 urine samples into two separate clusters according to tumor types in the canonical plot.

Abstract
The primary site of action for the novel antibiotic, bicyclomycin, in Escherichia coli has been identified to be the rho transcription termination factor. The inhibition of rho poly(C)-stimulated hydrolysis of ATP by bicyclomycin has been found to proceed by a non-competitive, reversible pathway with respect to ATP (Ki = 20 microM). Inhibition by dihydrobicyclomycin was similar (Ki = 75 microM). No change in the inhibitory properties of the antibiotic was observed under the assay conditions with the two rho mutants, Cys202Gly and Cys202Ser, indicating that Cys-202 does not affect drug binding to rho. Prolonged incubation (32 degrees C, 12 h) of wild-type rho with bicyclomycin (20 mM) led to protein degradation and a slow, permanent loss of rho ATPase activity after dialysis. Evidence was obtained that trace amounts of proteases present with bicyclomycin were responsible for the observed protein degradation. Treatment of wild-type and mutant rho proteins with purified bicyclomycin (25 mM) led to approximately 80% loss of ATPase activity after dialysis with no apparent loss of protein. However, a reduction of the electrophoretic mobility of the bicyclomycin-treated rho versus wild-type rho was seen. Addition of either ATP or poly(C) to wild-type rho led to partial protection against bicyclomycin inactivation, while inclusion of both ligands provided near complete protection against inactivation. The observed loss of ATPase activity upon prolonged incubation of rho with excess purified bicyclomycin is attributed to the covalent modification of the protein by the antibiotic at multiple sites.

Abstract
A new method of moiré topography is suggested in which a slit beam is used in a scanning mode to generate moiré fringes. One remarkable feature of this method is that, as opposed to existing shadow and projection types, height differences between two consecutive fringes become constant so that absolute fringe orders need not be identified. This advantage makes it possible to measure three-dimensional surface profiles in an automatic manner simply by using a computer-aided image-processing technique. In addition this method can be easily implemented in a conventional coordinate measuring machine with a minimum addition of optical hardware.

Abstract
We present a novel design for quadrature phase detection utilizing two-mode optical waveguides for optical interferometric systems. A pair of interferometric signals having quadrature optical phase information can be obtained from the near-field and far-field patterns of a two-mode waveguide output. The operational principle is based on a pi/2 differential phase shift between two modal beams occurring during their transition from near-field to far-field radiation patterns.

Abstract
An intermodal switch based on optically induced (through the Kerr effect) periodic coupling in a two-mode waveguide is described and demonstrated. A high-power pump beam injected into the two modes of the waveguide produces a periodic modulation of the refractive-index profile with a period equal to the modal beat length, which causes coupling between the two modes of a simultaneously injected probe beam. The operating principle was successfully demonstrated in an elliptical-core two-mode fiber with counterpropagating pump and probe beams.

Abstract
A new optical-optical switching technique is proposed and demonstrated with a probe-pump scheme, utilizing nonlinear differential phase shift between two spatial modes in a highly elliptical-core fiber. The probe beam is switched from one intensity-lobe position of the fiber output radiation pattern to the other in a 33-m-long fiber at a pump power of 1.6 W.

Abstract
The output spectra of the Stokes and anti-Stokes fields generated by stimulated four-photon mixing in birefringent fiber are investigated both experimentally and theoretically and are found to be dependent on the pump intensity. The pump-intensity-dependent changes in their frequency shifts are measured in 15-m long birefringent fiber by time-resolved spectroscopy using a 500-H(z)Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (lambda = 1.0642microm) as the pump source. Also, the Stokes gain coefficient is calculated as a function of the frequency shift and the pump power for the present phase-matching process where the mutually perpendicular polarization components are involved. The theoretical results agree well with the experimental data obtained.
