Abstract
BACKGROUND Advanced platelet-rich fibrin extract (APRFE) contains a high concentration of various cytokines that are helpful for improving stem cells repair function. OBJECTIVE However, the underlying mechanism of APRFE improving stem cell repairing is not clear. METHODS We produced APRFE by centrifuging fresh peripheral blood samples and isolated and identified human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs). The abundance of cytokines contained in APRFE was detected by the Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The ADMSCs treated with or without APRFE were collected for transcriptome sequencing. RESULTS Based on the sequencing data, the expression profiles were contracted. The differentially expressed genes and lncRNA (DEGs and DElncRNAs) were obtained using for the differential expression analysis. The lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA network was constructed based on the miRNet database. The further enrichment analysis results showed that the biological functions were mainly related to proliferation, differentiation, and cell-cell function. To explore the role of APRFE, the protein-protein interaction network was constructed among the cytokines included in APRFE and DEGs. Furthermore, we constructed the global regulatory network based on the RNAInter and TRRUST database. The pathways in the global regulatory network were considered as the core pathways. We found that the DEGs in the core pathways were associated with stemness scores. CONCLUSION In summary, we predicted that APRFE activated three pathways (tryptophan metabolism, mTOR signaling pathway, and adipocytokine signaling) to promote the proliferation and differentiation of ADMSCs. The finding may be helpful for guiding the application of ADMSCs in the clinic.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the incidence of heterotopic ossification after artificial cervical disc replacement with Discover disc, and to explore the effect of heterotopic ossification on postoperative radiological and clinical efficacy. Methods: From January 2010 to January 2015, 45 patients with cervical spondylosis underwent single-level artificial cervical disc replacement in Shanghai Changzheng Hospital, including 29 cases of cervical spondylotic myelopathy, 11 cases of cervical spondylotic radiculopathy and 5 cases of mixed cervical spondylosis. At the last follow-up, Mehren grading method was used for classification of heterotopic ossification, among which, grade 0-Ⅱ was defined as low grade ossification group, and 26 patients (16 male, 10 female) were enrolled in this group; grade Ⅲ-Ⅳ was defined as high grade ossification group, and 19 patients (12 males, 7 females) were included in this group. C(2-7) Cobb angle, cervical total range of motion and range of motion at index level were used to evaluate the radiological outcomes of the two groups. Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score, neck disability index (NDI) score and visual analogue scale (VAS) were used to evaluate the clinical outcomes of the two groups. The adjacent segment intervertebral disc height and range of motion were used to evaluate the effects of heterotopic ossification on adjacent segment. Results: All patients were followed up regularly for (98±18) months. There were no statistical differences between the two groups regarding to demographic data (all P>0.05). There was no significant differences in C(2-7) Cobb angle and total range of motion between the two groups at the last follow-up (all P>0.05), but range of motion at index level in the group with low grades was significantly higher than that in the group with high grades (7.8°±6.2° vs 2.6°±1.2°, t=3.60, P<0.05). There was no significant differences in JOA score, recovery rate and NDI score between the two groups (all P>0.05). There was no significant differences in the adjacent segment intervertebral disc height before operation and at the last follow-up (both P>0.05). There was no significant differences in range of motion at adjacent segment before operation (P>0.05), while range of motion at adjacent segment in the group with low grades was significantly lower than that in the group with high grades (9.5°±1.1° vs 10.6°±1.8° and 9.4°±1.4° vs 10.5°±1.7°, repectively, t=2.54, 2.31, both P<0.05). Conclusions: Heterotopic ossification does not affect the clinical outcomes, cervical curvature and cervical total range of motion after artificial cervical disc replacement with Discover disc. However, the higher grade of heterotopic ossification, the lower range of motion at index level and the higher range of motion at adjacent segment.

Abstract
Zuotai (mainly β-HgS) and Zhusha (also called as cinnabar, mainly α-HgS) are used in traditional medicines in combination with herbs or even drugs in the treatment of various disorders, while mercury chloride (HgCl2) and methylmercury (MeHg) do not have known medical values but are highly toxic. This study aimed to compare the effects of mercury sulfides with HgCl2 and MeHg on hepatic drug processing gene expression. Mice were orally administrated with Zuotai (β-HgS, 30mg/kg), α-HgS (HgS, 30mg/kg), HgCl2 (33.6mg/kg), or MeHg (3.1mg/kg) for 7days, and the expression of genes related to phase-1 drug metabolism (P450), phase-2 conjugation, and phase-3 (transporters) genes were examined. The mercurials at the dose and duration used in the study did not have significant effects on the expression of cytochrome P450 1-4 family genes and the corresponding nuclear receptors, except for a slight increase in PPARα and Cyp4a10 by HgCl2. The expressions of UDP-glucuronosyltransferase and sulfotransferase were increased by HgCl2 and MeHg, but not by Zuotai and HgS. HgCl2 decreased the expression of organic anion transporter (Oatp1a1), but increased Oatp1a4. Both HgCl2 and MeHg increased the expression of multidrug resistance-associated protein genes (Mrp1, Mrp2, Mrp3, and Mrp4). Zuotai and HgS had little effects on these transporter genes. In conclusion, Zuotai and HgS are different from HgCl2 and MeHg in hepatic drug processing gene expression; suggesting that chemical forms of mercury not only affect their disposition and toxicity, but also affect their effects on the expression of hepatic drug processing genes.

Abstract
To investigate the effect of the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor lovastatin on the expression of the receptor for hepatic low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in a rat model with kidney disease, and to identify the mechanisms in statin treatment of nephrotic syndrome with hyperlipidemia, a rat model with nephrotic syndrome was established. Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats were treated with lovastatin for 2 weeks using gavage. The expression of protein and mRNA of the LDL receptor in the rat liver was detected with Western blot and RT-PCR, respectively, and blood-biochemical indices were also recorded for each group. Compared with the untreated control group, lovastatin treatment significantly decreased the levels of serum total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and urinary protein. In addition, lovastatin treatment significantly increased the levels of serum albumin and hepatic LDL receptor proteins, but had no effect on the expression of hepatic LDL receptor mRNA. Treatment with lovastatin markedly increased the expression of the hepatic LDL receptor in rats with nephrotic syndrome, which was accompanied by significantly improved hyperlipidemia.

Abstract
Milk composition and body measurement traits, influenced by genes and environmental factors, play important roles in value assessments of efficiency and productivity in dairy goats. Lactoferrin (LF), involved in the efficient expression of protein in milk, is also an anabolic factor in skeletal tissue and a potent osteoblast survival factor. Therefore, it is an important candidate gene for milk composition and body measurement trait selection in marker-assisted selection. We employed PCR-SSCP and DNA sequencing to screen the genetic variations of the LF gene in 549 Chinese dairy goats. A novel single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (G198A in exon II) of the LF gene was detected. The frequencies of the AA genotype were 0.0285 and 0.0261 in GZ and SN populations, respectively. Both populations were found to have low levels of polymorphism and were in Hardy-Weinberg disequilibrium (P < 0.05). We found significant (P < 0.05) associations of the SNP marker with milk protein and acidity in the total population; animals with the AA genotype had higher mean values for milk protein than those with the GA genotype. Animals with genotype AA had higher mean values for withers height than those with genotype GG (P < 0.05). We concluded that this SNP of the LF gene has potential as a genetic marker for milk composition and body traits in dairy goat breeding.

Abstract
It has been reported that oxidatively modified low-density lipoprotein (Ox-LDL) involvement with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and foam cell formation play an important role in atherosclerosis (AS). Protective effects of Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) have been identified for some cardiovascular and neurological disorders. The aim of this study was to investigate whether Ox-LDL regulates VEGF expression in human THP-1 monocytes, as well as the effect of EGb 761 on VEGF expression and the formation of foam cells. After exposure to Ox-LDL alone or in combination with EGb 761 for up to 48h, cell viability was measured using the MTT assay. VEGF protein content in the supernatant was analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). VEGF mRNA was determined by real-time PCR. To determine the effect of EGb 761 on foam cell formation, an Ox-LDL-induced foam cell model was used. Ox-LDL inhibited the growth of THP-1 cells and EGb 761 increased the cell survival rate. Ox-LDL markedly increased VEGF expression in THP-1 cells in a time- and concentration-dependent manner, which was significantly suppressed by EGb 761. EGb 761 also inhibited monocyte/macrophage-derived foam cell formation. These results suggest that Ox-LDL is involved in the development of human AS through VEGF induction in monocytes, and that EGb 761 prevents in vitro atherogenesis, probably via downregulation of VEGF expression in monocytes and inhibition of monocyte/macrophage-derived foam cell formation. The findings suggest a mechanism for the in vivo anti-AS effect of EGb 761 and support its potential clinical use in AS.

Abstract
We have developed an effusive laser photodissociation radical source, aiming for the production of vibrationally relaxed radicals. Employing this radical source, we have measured the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization efficiency (PIE) spectrum of the propargyl radical (C(3)H(3)) formed by the 193 nm excimer laser photodissociation of propargyl chloride in the energy range of 8.5-9.9 eV using high-resolution (energy bandwidth = 1 meV) multibunch synchrotron radiation. The VUV-PIE spectrum of C(3)H(3) thus obtained is found to exhibit pronounced autoionization features, which are tentatively assigned as members of two vibrational progressions of C(3)H(3) in excited autoionizing Rydberg states. The ionization energy (IE = 8.674 +/- 0.001 eV) of C(3)H(3) determined by a small steplike feature resolved at the photoionization onset of the VUV-PIE spectrum is in excellent agreement with the IE value reported in a previous pulsed field ionization-photoelectron study. We have also calculated the Franck-Condon factors (FCFs) for the photoionization transitions C(3)H(3) (+)(X;nu(i),i = 1-12)<--C(3)H(3)(X). The comparison between the pattern of FCFs and the autoionization peaks resolved in the VUV-PIE spectrum of C(3)H(3) points to the conclusion that the resonance-enhanced autoionization mechanism is most likely responsible for the observation of pronounced autoionization features. We also present here the VUV-PIE spectra for the mass 39 ions observed in the VUV synchrotron-based photoionization mass spectrometric sampling of several premixed flames. The excellent agreement of the IE value and the pattern of autoionizing features of the VUV-PIE spectra observed in the photodissociation and flames studies has provided an unambiguous identification of the propargyl radical as an important intermediate in the premixed combustion flames. The discrepancy found between the PIE spectra obtained in flames and photodissociation at energies above the IE(C(3)H(3)) suggests that the PIE spectra obtained in flames might have contributions from the photoionization of vibrationally excited C(3)H(3) and/or the dissociative photoionization processes involving larger hydrocarbon species formed in flames.

Abstract
AIMS To explore the role of Fas in cardiomyocytic apoptosis induced by ischaemia through determining the histological relation between Fas expression and apoptosis in rat myocardium during ischaemia/infarction. METHODS The myocardial ischaemia model was produced by ligating the left coronary artery in Sprague-Dawley rats. The rats were killed from 10 minutes to seven days after surgery. Apoptotic myocardial cells were detected by the in situ terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase mediated nick end labelling method, and the expression of Fas by immunohistochemistry and western blotting. RESULTS Cardiomyocytic apoptosis appeared from three to 36 hours after ischaemia. The expression of Fas could be detected by western blot from before surgery to seven days of ischaemia. Apoptosis and the expression of Fas in the cardiomyocytes appeared in different regions of the myocardium: apoptosis in the ischaemic region, Fas in the regions surrounding ischaemic myocardium. CONCLUSION These results suggest that there is a tempero-spatial dissociation between the expression of Fas and apoptosis after coronary occlusion. Fas might not directly regulate the apoptosis of cardiomyocytes induced by ischaemia.

Abstract
Activation-induced cell death (AICD), a process mediated by CD95 and CD95 ligand (CD95L), plays a critical role in regulating homeostasis of the immune system. Although the role of sphingolipids such as ceramides has been suggested to participate in CD95-mediated apoptosis, the exact role of these molecules in this process remains controversial. We employed myriocin, a specific inhibitor of serine palmitoyl-CoA transferase that mediates the first commitment step in sphingolipid synthesis. We found that myriocin could effectively block AICD in T-cell hybridomas and T-cell blasts. However, fumonisin B1, an inhibitor of the final step of ceramide synthesis, or inhibitors of sphingomyelinases did not prevent AICD. Furthermore, ceramide analogues, such as C2 and C6, could not reverse the inhibitory effect of myriocin. Interestingly, sphinganine, an intermediate of ceramide synthesis, completely reversed the inhibitory effect of myriocin, indicating a critical role of sphinganine. Myriocin did not modulate the expression of CD95 or CD95L, instead, it interfered with the early steps of CD95-mediated caspase activation. Therefore, we have uncovered a novel mechanism by which sphingolipid intermediates regulate CD95-mediated apoptosis.

Abstract
Immunohistochemical staining was carried out on 79 samples of lung cancers using anti-CD44v6 antibody. Strong positivity for CD44v6 was observed in the basal cells of bronchial epithelium, squamous metaplasia, and type II pneumocytes. The expression of CD44v6 in primary lesions of non-small cell lung cancers and small cell lung cancers was 67.6% (48/71) and 0% (0/8) respectively, while the expression of CD44v6 in metastases of lymph nodes was 57.6% (19/33) and 0% (0/5), respectively. It is suggest that expression of CD44v6 is correlated with histologic type, differentiation and metastasis of lung cancer.

Abstract
Few studies have specifically evaluated controller therapy in patients with mild persistent asthma. We used a subgroup analysis to investigate the effects of montelukast, a potent cysteinyl leukotriene receptor antagonist, on adult patients on the milder end of the asthma severity spectrum. We have identified seven double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled studies of adult patients with mild-to-moderate chronic asthma in which montelukast was investigated. Subsets of patients with baseline forced expiratory volume in 1 sec (FEV1) > 80% and > 75% predicted or further restricted by less than daily rescue beta-agonist use were included as four cohorts (A, B, C, D), and efficacy measures, including change in FEV1 rescue-free days, beta-agonist use, nocturnal awakenings and blood eosinophil counts were evaluated. Cohorts A to D comprised 21%, 8%, 11%, and 4%, respectively, of patients from these studies. Mean pretreatment FEV1 ranged from 81% to 84% predicted and daily beta-agonist use from 2.4 to 4.5 puffs day(-1) in the four cohorts. Pooled results demonstrated a treatment effect for montelukast over placebo in all cohorts, for all endpoints. There was a significant improvement in FEV1 in montelukast-treated patients (7-8% over baseline) compared with placebo (1-4% over baseline, between-group difference P < or = 0.02) for all cohorts. Similarly, the percentage of rescue-free days increased substantially more with montelukast (22-30%) than with placebo (8-13%). This subgroup analysis indicates that montelukast produced improvements in parameters of asthma control in patients with milder persistent asthma that should be confirmed in additional prospective trials.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Studying changes of chemical constituents of Cinnamomum cassia after compatibility in Coptis chinensis; determining the amount of cinnamic acid in the decoction. METHOD An YWG C18 column was used with a mobile phase of CH3CN-0.01% H3PO4(27:73), the flow rate was 1.0 ml.min-1 and the detection wavelength was 280 nm. RESULT AND CONCLUSION The calibration curve of cinnamic acid had good linear relationship in the range of 0.112-4.48 micrograms. The average recovery was 100.0%, the relative standard deviation was 0.66%. The amount of cinnamic acid was decreased in the decoction, and the decreased degree was related with the ratio of C. chinensis to C. cassia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nasal challenge studies have suggested histamine and cysteinyl leukotrienes are important proinflammatory mediators in allergic rhinitis. This study was designed to determine the efficacy of montelukast, a cysteinyl leukotriene receptor antagonist, administered alone or concomitantly with loratadine, an H(1)-receptor antagonist, in seasonal allergic rhinitis. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of concomitant use of montelukast and loratadine in the treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis. METHODS In this multicenter (N = 12) double-blind, randomized, parallel-group, placebo-controlled 2-week trial, 460 men and women, aged 15 to 75 years, with spring seasonal allergic rhinitis were randomly allocated to receive 1 of the following 5 treatments: montelukast 10 or 20 mg, loratadine 10 mg, montelukast 10 mg with loratadine 10 mg, or placebo, once daily in the evening. The primary end point was daytime nasal symptoms score (average of congestion, rhinorrhea, itching, and sneezing). Other end points were eye symptoms, nighttime symptoms, individual daytime nasal symptoms, global evaluations (patient's and physician's), and rhinoconjunctivitis quality-of-life scores. RESULTS Concomitant montelukast with loratadine improved the primary end point significantly (P <.001) compared with placebo and each agent alone. Compared with placebo, montelukast with loratadine also significantly improved eye symptoms, nighttime symptoms, individual daytime nasal symptoms, global evaluations, and quality of life. Montelukast alone and loratadine alone caused modest improvements in rhinitis end points. All treatments were similarly well tolerated. CONCLUSIONS Concomitant montelukast with loratadine provided effective treatment for seasonal allergic rhinitis and associated eye symptoms with a safety profile comparable with placebo.

Abstract
Leukotrienes are pro-inflammatory mediators which may contribute to tissue, sputum, and blood eosinophilia seen in allergic and inflammatory diseases, including asthma. Montelukast is a cysteinyl leukotriene1 (CysLT1) receptor antagonist which improves asthma control; the aim of this study was to investigate its effect on induced sputum eosinophils. Montelukast 10 mg (n=19) or placebo (n=21) were administered orally once in the evening for 4 weeks to 40 chronic adult asthmatic patients, aged 19-64 yrs, in a double-blind, randomized, parallel group study. Patients were included if, at prestudy, they had >5% sputum eosinophils, symptomatic asthma with a forced expiratory volume in one second > or =65% of the predicted value and were being treated only with "as needed" inhaled beta2-agonists. In addition to sputum eosinophils, blood eosinophils and clinical endpoints were also assessed. Four weeks of montelukast treatment decreased sputum eosinophils from 7.5% to 3.9% (3.6% decrease, 95% confidence interval (CI) -16.6-0.4). In contrast, placebo treatment was associated with an increase in sputum eosinophils from 14.5% to 17.9% (3.4% increase, 95% CI -3.5-9.8). The least squares mean difference between groups (-11.3%, 95% CI -21.1-(-1.4)) was significant (p=0.026). Compared with placebo, montelukast significantly reduced blood eosinophils (p=0.009), asthma symptoms (p=0.001) and beta2-agonist use (p<0.001) while significantly increasing morning peak expiratory flow (p=0.001). Montelukast was generally well tolerated in this study, with a safety profile similar to the placebo. These results demonstrate that montelukast decreases airway eosinophilic inflammation in addition to improving clinical parameters. Its efficacy in the treatment of chronic asthma may be due, in part, to the effect on airway inflammation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral leukotriene receptor antagonists have been shown to have efficacy in chronic asthma. OBJECTIVE To compare the clinical benefit of montelukast, a once-daily oral leukotriene receptor antagonist; placebo; and inhaled beclomethasone. DESIGN Randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, 12-week study. SETTING 36 sites worldwide. PATIENTS 895 patients 15 to 85 years of age with chronic asthma and an FEV1 50% to 85% of predicted. INTERVENTIONS Montelukast, 10 mg once daily at bedtime; inhaled beclomethasone, 200 microg twice daily, administered with a spacer device; or placebo. MEASUREMENTS Primary end points were daytime asthma symptom score and FEV1. Secondary end points were peak expiratory flow rates in the morning and evening, as-needed beta-agonist use, nocturnal awakenings, asthma-specific quality of life, and worsening asthma episodes. RESULTS Over the 12-week treatment period, the average percentage change from baseline in FEV1 was 13.1% with beclomethasone, 7.4% with montelukast, and 0.7% with placebo (P < 0.001 for each active treatment compared with placebo; P < 0.01 for beclomethasone compared with montelukast). The average change from baseline in daytime symptom score was -0.62 for beclomethasone, -0.41 for montelukast, and -0.17 for placebo (P < 0.001 for each active treatment compared with placebo; P < 0.01 for beclomethasone compared with montelukast). Each agent improved peak expiratory flow rates and quality of life, reduced nocturnal awakenings and asthma attacks, increased the number of asthma-control days, and decreased the number of days with asthma exacerbations (P < 0.001 for each active treatment compared with placebo for each end point; P < 0.01 for beclomethasone compared with montelukast for each end point). Although beclomethasone had a greater mean clinical benefit than montelukast, montelukast had a faster onset of action and a greater initial effect. The two agents caused similar decreases in peripheral blood eosinophil counts (P < 0.05 for each agent compared with placebo). Both agents had tolerability profiles similar to that of placebo over the 12-week study. CONCLUSIONS Although beclomethasone had a larger mean effect than montelukast, both drugs provided clinical benefit to patients with chronic asthma. This finding is consistent with the use of these agents as controller medications for chronic asthma.

Abstract
The results of the health survey in a high background radiation area (HBRA) from 1972 to 1990, in Yangjiang, China, are presented in this paper. Radiological measurements of the environmental and human bodies with different methods revealed that 330 mR/a in HBRA and 114 mR/a in the control area (CA) were the doses that annually an individual exposure to the external environmental gamma radiation and effective doses to whole body are 6.4 mSv in HBRA and 2.4 mSv in CA annually. The carcinogenic and mutagenic factors were surveyed. The Results showed that these factors in the two areas were similar. Up till now, no harmful impact induced by natural radiation, based on the data as: cancer mortality from 1,008,769 person-years in HBRA and 995,070 person-years in CA; hereditary diseases and congenial malformations from 13,425 subjects in HBRA and 13,087 subjects in CA; human chromosome aberrations, and immune function of the inhabitants, was found. In addition, in this paper the authors discussed the results of cancer mortality, of chromosome aberrations and of immune function, and analyzed the possible relationship among them. The carcinogenic risk induced by low dose radiation was also estimated and discussed.

Abstract
Analysis has been carried out by GC-MS on the essential oil from the crude drug Evodia rutaecarpa and its Glycyrrihiza uralensis processed product, vinegar processed product and salt processed product. The total amount of essential oil decreases in the order of crude drug, vinegar processed, G. uralensis processed and salt processed products. The results of GC-MS analysis show that the constituents of the essential oil from the crude drug and its G. uralensis processed product are markedly different, and the contents of these constituents vary significantly.

Abstract
Norcantharidin (NCTD) is a synthetic analog of cantharidin. It has potent antitumor properties without obvious side effect that Cantharidin has on urinary organs. It has been reported that NCTD is an immunological stimulator to NK, LAK, neutrophil and lymphocyte. In our experiment, however, we observed that NCTD can markedly inhibit lymphocyte proliferation stimulated by mitogen ConA or LPS in vitro, and the mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) of mice, in a dose-related manner. This occurred even when the drug was added 40 hours (for lymphocyte proliferation) or 72 hours (for MLR) after the cultures were initiated. On the other hand, NCTD has no effect on inactive lymphocytes that were cultured as control in medium without mitogens, suggesting that NCTD selectively acts on activated lymphocyte.

Abstract
Thyroid nodularity following continuous low-dose radiation exposure in China was determined in 1,001 women aged 50-65 years who resided in areas of high background radiation (330 mR/yr) their entire lives, and in 1,005 comparison subjects exposed to normal levels of radiation (114 mR/yr). Cumulative doses to the thyroid were estimated to be of the order of 14 cGy and 5 cGy, respectively. Personal interviews and physical examinations were conducted, and measurements were made of serum thyroid hormone levels, urinary iodine concentrations, and chromosome aberrations in circulating lymphocytes. For all nodular disease, the prevalences in the high background and control areas were 9.5% and 9.3%, respectively. For single nodules, the prevalences were 7.4% in the high background area and 6.6% in the control area (prevalence ratio = 1.13; 95% confidence interval = 0.82-1.55). There were no differences found in serum levels of thyroid hormones. Women in the high background region, however, had significantly lower concentrations of urinary iodine and significantly higher frequencies of stable and unstable chromosome aberrations. Increased intake of allium vegetables such as garlic and onions was associated with a decreased risk of nodular disease, which seems consistent with experimental studies suggesting that allium compounds can inhibit tumor growth and proliferation. The prevalence of mild diffuse goiter was higher in the high background radiation region, perhaps related to a low dietary intake of iodine. These data suggest that continuous exposure to low-level radiation throughout life is unlikely to appreciably increase the risk of thyroid cancer. However, such exposure may cause chromosomal damage.

Abstract
Human HL-60 cells were exposed for 20 min to an electromagnetic field at frequencies ranging from 15 to 150 Hz and at densities from 0.2 to 2.3 mT (2 to 23 gauss). Following each exposure, quantitative levels of c-myc and histone H2B transcripts were determined by dot-blot hybridization analyses and compared with unexposed control samples. The most pronounced increase in each transcript occurred after exposure at 45 Hz, with levels more than four times that found in unexposed controls.

Abstract
The exposure of human cultured cells to electromagnetic signals with extremely low repetition rates resulted in an increased level of selected RNA transcripts. RNA with homology to beta-actin, histone H2B, and v-myc DNA was monitored by dot blot hybridization following 20 min exposures of HL60 cells to five different electromagnetic signals. The experiments used three asymmetric electromagnetic signals with different repetition rates, and two symmetric sinusoidal signals, delivered at 60 and 72 Hz. The degree of increase in homologous transcripts was dependent on the signal characteristics.
