Abstract
BACKGROUND Although it is unclear if preoperative anemia affects patients undergoing radical resection of esophageal cancer, it does increase the length of stay (LOS) for surgical patients. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to investigate if, after adjusting for other covariates, anemia was independently associated with LOS in people undergoing radical resection of esophageal cancer. METHODS The retrospective cohort study included 680 patients undergoing radical esophageal cancer surgery between January 2010 and December 2020. Preoperative anemia was the targeted independent variable, while LOS was the target independent variable. Demographics, comorbidities, laboratory tests, surgery and anesthesia, postoperative outcomes, and complications were collected. Multivariate linear analyses were performed for variables that might influence preoperative anemia and LOS selection. Subgroup analysis using hierarchical variables was then used to test the potential relationship. RESULTS The 647 individuals that were randomly chosen had an average age of 61.06 ± 8.16 years, and 77.43% of them were male. The prevalence of anemia was 36.6%. All patients recruited had an average length of stay (LOS) of 26.31 ± 13.19 days, 25.40 ± 11.44 days for patients who had no preoperative anemia, and 27.89 ± 15.66 days for patients who had preoperative anemia, p < 0.05. After adjusting for covariates, the results of fully adjusted linear regression revealed that preoperative anemia was significantly associated with LOS (β = 2.04, 95%CI (0.13, 3.96) ), p < 0.05. The results of the subgroup analysis were basically accurate and steady. Regardless of gender, same outcomes were seen when preoperative anemia was defined as a Hb level < 13 g/dL (β = 2.29, 95%CI (0.33, 4.25) ), p < 0.05. In addition, the LOS was shortened with the increase of preoperative hemoglobin (Hb) (β= -0.81, 95%CI (-1.46, -0.1) ), p < 0.05. CONCLUSION Preoperative anemia is typical in Chinese patients undergoing radical esophageal cancer resection and is independently associated with prolonged LOS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Double lumen tube (DLT) and single lumen tube (SLT) are two common endotracheal tube (ETT) types in esophageal cancer surgery. Evidence of the relationship between two ETT types and postoperative pneumonia (PP) remains unclear. We aimed to determine the association between two types of ETT (DLT and SLT) and PP and assess the perioperative risk-related parameters that affect PP. METHODS This study included 680 patients who underwent esophageal cancer surgery from January 01, 2010 through December 31, 2020. The primary outcome was PP, and the secondary outcome was perioperative risk-related parameters that affect PP. The independent variable was the type of ETT: DLT or SLT. The dependent variable was PP. To determine the relationship between variables and PP, univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. The covariables included baseline demographic characteristics, comorbidity disease, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, tumor location, laboratory parameters, intraoperative related variables. RESULTS In all patients, the incidence of postoperative pneumonia in esophagectomy was 32.77% (36.90% in DLT group and 26.38% in SLT group). After adjusting for potential risk factors, we found that using an SLT in esophagectomy was associated with lower risk of postoperative pneumonia compared to using a DLT (Odd ratio = 0.41, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.22, 0.77, p = 0.0057). Besides DLT, smoking history, combined intravenous and inhalation anesthesia (CIIA) and vasoactive drug use were all significant and independent risk factors for postoperative pneumonia in esophagectomy. These results remained stable and reliable after subgroup analysis. CONCLUSIONS During esophagectomy, there is significant association between the type of ETT (DLT or SLT) and PP. Patients who were intubated with a single lumen tube may have a lower rate of postoperative pneumonia than those who were intubated with a double lumen tube. This finding requires verification in follow-up studies.

Abstract
BackgroundAlthough red cell distribution width (RDW) is widely observed in clinical practice, only a few studies have looked at all-cause mortality in unselected critically ill patients, and there are even fewer studies on long-term mortality. The goal of our study was to explore the prediction and inference of mortality in unselected critically ill patients by assessing RDW levels.MethodsWe obtained demographic information, laboratory results, prevalence data, and vital signs from the unselected critically ill patients using the publicly available MIMIC-III database. We then used this information to analyze the association between baseline RDW levels and unselected critically ill patients using Cox proportional risk analysis, smoothed curve fitting, subgroup analysis, and Kaplan–Meier survival curves for short, intermediate, and long-term all-cause mortality in unselected critically ill patients.ResultsA total of 26,818 patients were included in our study for the final data analysis after screening in accordance with acceptable conditions. Our study investigated the relationship between RDW levels and all-cause mortality in a non-selected population by a smoothed curve fit plots and COX proportional risk regression models integrating cubic spline functions reported results about a non-linear relationship. In the fully adjusted model, we found that RDW values were positively associated with 30-day, 90-day, 365-day, and 4-year all-cause mortality in 26,818 non-selected adult patients with HRs of 1.10 95%CIs (1.08, 1.12); 1.11 95%CIs (1.10, 1.13); 1.13 95%CIs (1.12, 1.14); 1.13 95%CIs (1.12, 1.14).ConclusionIn unselected critically ill patients, RDW levels were positively associated with all-cause mortality, with elevated RDW levels increasing all-cause mortality.

Abstract
Background The red blood cell distribution width (RDW) is a metric that measures the variation in the size of red blood cells and is presented as the red blood cell volume coefficient of variation. Increased RDW levels are closely linked to an elevated risk of death from congestive heart failure (CHF) and might be a new risk marker for cardiovascular disease. This research sought to evaluate the possible link between RDW levels and all-cause mortality in CHF patients after controlling for other covariates. Methods The publicly accessible Mimic-III database served as the source of data for our research. We employed ICU admission scoring systems to gather information on each patient's demographical data, laboratory test results, comorbid conditions, vital signs, and scores. Among CHF patients, the link between baseline RDW levels and short-, medium-, and long-term all-cause mortality was evaluated by Cox proportional hazard analysis, smooth curve fitting, and Kaplan-Meier survival curves. Results In total, 4,955 participants were selected for the study with an average age of 72.3 ± 13.5 years (old) and with males accounting for 53.1%. The findings recorded from the fully adjusted Cox proportional hazard model showed that higher RDW was associated with a greater risk of 30-day, 90-day, 365-day, and 4-year all-cause death; the HRs and 95% confidence intervals were 1.11 (1.05, 1.16), 1.09 (1.04, 1.13), 1.10 (1.06, 1.14), and 1.10 (1.06, 1.13), respectively. The results were stable and reliable using subgroup analysis. Smooth curve fitting and the K-M survival curve method further validated our results. Conclusion The RDW levels had a u-shaped connection with 30-day mortality. The RDW level was linked to an elevated risk of short-, medium-, and long-term all-cause death among CHF patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: The relationship between serum sodium levels and mortality in congestive heart failure (CHF) patients has not been well studied previously. Serum sodium levels are linked to an increased risk of all-cause death in CHF patients over the short, medium, and long term. Serum sodium levels are strongly linked to an increased risk of death from congestive heart failure and could be a new risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The goal of this study is to look into the relationship between serum sodium levels and all-cause mortality in people with CHF after controlling for other factors.METHODS: The publicly accessible Mimic III database was the source of data for our study. We use the ICU Admission Scoring System to collect demographic data, laboratory findings, comorbidities, vital signs, and scoring information for each patient. Cox proportional risk analysis, smooth curve fitting, and the Kaplan-Meier survival curve were used to assess the relationship between baseline sodium levels and all-cause mortality in CHF patients.RESULTS: The segmentation regression model discovered a turning point value of serum sodium levels (137.5mmol/L) between serum sodium levels and all-cause mortality. According to the results of the fully adjusted Cox proportional hazard model, lower serum sodium levels (<137.5mmol/L) were associated with an increased risk of 30-day, 90-day, 365-day, and 4-year all-cause deaths. The HRs and 95th confidence intervals were 0.96 (0.94, 0.99) , 0.96 (0.94, 0.99), 0.96 (0.94, 0.98) , and 0.96 (0.95, 0.98), respectively; The higher Serum sodium levels(≥137.5mmol/L) were related to associate multiplied risk of 30-day, 90-day, 365-day, and 4-year all-cause deaths; the HRs and 95th confidence intervals were 1.02 (1.00, 1.05), 1.02 (1.00, 1.04), 1.02 (1.00, 1.03) , and 1.02 (1.00, 1.03), respectively.CONCLUSION: Serum sodium levels were u-shaped about all-cause mortality. In individuals with CHF, serum sodium levels are linked to an elevated risk of short-, medium-, and long-term all-cause mortality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Data providing a relationship between the anesthetic method and postoperative length of stay (PLOS) is limited. We aimed to investigate whether general anesthesia alone or combined with epidural anesthesia might affect perioperative risk factors and PLOS for patients undergoing radical resection of malignant esophageal tumors. METHODS The study retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 680 patients who underwent a radical esophageal malignant tumor resection in a Chinese hospital from January 01, 2010, to December 31, 2020. The primary outcome measure was PLOS, and the secondary outcome was perioperative risk-related parameters that affect PLOS. The independent variable was the type of anesthesia: general anesthesia (GA) or combined epidural-general anesthesia (E-GA). The dependent variable was PLOS. We conducted univariate and multivariate logistic regression and propensity score matching to compare the relationships of GA and E-GA with PLOS and identify the perioperative risk factors for PLOS. In this cohort study, the confounders included sociodemographic data, preoperative chemotherapy, coexisting diseases, laboratory parameters, intraoperative variables, and postoperative complications. RESULTS In all patients, the average PLOS was 19.85 ± 12.60 days. There was no significant difference in PLOS between the GA group and the E-GA group either before or after propensity score matching (20.01 days ± 14.90 days vs. 19.79 days ± 11.57 days, P = 0.094, 18.09 ± 9.71 days vs. 19.39 ± 10.75 days, P = 0.145). The significant risk factors for increased PLOS were lung infection (β = 3.35, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.54-5.52), anastomotic leakage (β = 25.73, 95% CI: 22.11-29.34), and surgical site infection (β = 9.39, 95% CI: 4.10-14.68) by multivariate regression analysis. Subgroup analysis revealed a stronger association between PLOS and vasoactive drug use, blood transfusions, and open esophagectomy. The results remained essentially the same (stable and reliable) after subgroup analysis. CONCLUSIONS Although there is no significant association between the type of anesthesia(GA or E-GA) and PLOS for patients undergoing radical esophageal malignant tumor resection, an association between PLOS and lung infection, anastomotic leakage, and surgical site infection was determined by multivariate regression analysis. A larger sample future study design may verify our results.

Abstract
Abstract
Background:Artificial femoral head replacement is one of the most effective methods for treatment of severe diseases of femoral joint in the elderly. The ideal anesthetic effect is one of the key elements for the success of the operation because it brings fast recovery. However, the multiple comorbidities of the elder patients make them too weak to tolerate the hemodynamic changes after anesthesia. Objective:To compare the post-anesthetic hemodynamic changes between combined lumbar plexus and sciatic nerve block(CLPSB) and combined spinal and epidural anesthesia(CSEA) in elderly patients undergoing unilateral artificial femoral head replacement.Methods:We reviewed records of the patients who aged over 60 years old (age 62-103 years) and received unilateral artificial femoral head replacement. 477 patients were included and divided into CLPSB group (n=90) and CSEA group (n=387). The primary outcome was comparison of the hemodynamic changes after anesthesia, including the SBP, diastolic blood pressure DBP, MAP and (HR). The second outcome was the comparison of the vasopressor used during the surgery.Results:We established three models to compare the two anesthesia methods on hemodynamic changes.All three models exhibit that changes of MAP (∆MAP) after CSEA were higher than that after CLPSB(β= 6.88, 95% CI: 4.33 - 9.42, P < 0.0001), with significant difference, which indicated that CSEA causes higher fluctuation of MAP. Concurrently, the use of vasopressors increased by 137% (OR=2.37, 95%CI: 1.24-4.53, P=0.0091) in the CSEA group, which is statistically significant. However, the changes of HR (∆HR) between the CLPSB and CSEA was not significant(β= 0.50, 95% CI: 1.62 - 2.62, P = 0.6427). Conclusions:Both CLPSB and CSEA are ideal anesthesia methods for patients receiving femoral head eplacement, though CLPSB is more suitable for elderly patients with advanced hemodynamic stability.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Elderly patients undergoing colonoscopy with propofol as sedation are prone to respiratory or cardiovascular complications. Intravenous lidocaine has analgesic efficacy and reduces propofol consumption during surgery. Here, the effect of intravenous lidocaine on propofol consumption was evaluated in elderly patients undergoing colonoscopy. METHODS Patients were randomly allocated to receive intravenous lidocaine (1.5 mg/kg bolus dose, followed by a 2 mg/kg/h continuous infusion during the procedure; Group L) or a placebo (saline; Group N). During the procedure, sedation was achieved by propofol. The following outcomes were recorded: total propofol consumption; time to loss of consciousness; number of airway modifications; time to the first airway intervention; incidence of sedation-related events; pain score after awakening; endoscopists' and patients' satisfaction scores; memory level of the procedure; and adverse events within 24 h postoperatively. RESULTS Compared with Group N, propofol consumption was reduced by 13.2% in Group L (100.30 ± 25.29 mg vs. 115.58 ± 27.52 mg, respectively, p = 0.008). Kaplan-Meier curves showed that the median time to the loss of consciousness episode was shorter in Group L than in Group N (40 s vs. 55 s, respectively, log rank p < 0.0001). The number of airway modifications, time to the first airway intervention, incidence of sedation-related events, time to awakening, pain score after awakening, endoscopists' and patients' satisfaction scores, memory level of the procedure and adverse events within 24 h postoperatively did not differ between the two groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Intravenous lidocaine can reduce propofol consumption in elderly patients undergoing colonoscopy, with quicker time to loss of consciousness. Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between serum sodium levels and mortality in congestive heart failure (CHF) patients has not been well-studied previously. The non-linear correlation between serum sodium levels and mortality in patients with heart failure is currently controversial, and the relationship between different serum sodium levels and mortality is disputed. The goal of this study is to look into the relationship between serum sodium levels and all-cause mortality in people with CHF after controlling for other factors. METHODS The publicly accessible Mimic III database was the source of data for our study. We use the ICU Admission Scoring System to collect demographic data, laboratory findings, comorbidities, vital signs, and scoring information for each patient. Cox proportional risk analysis, smooth curve fitting, and the Kaplan-Meier survival curve were used to assess the relationship between baseline sodium levels and all-cause mortality in CHF patients. RESULTS The segmentation regression model discovered a turning point value of serum sodium levels (137.5 mmol/L) between serum sodium levels and all-cause mortality. According to the results of the fully adjusted Cox proportional hazard model, lower serum sodium levels (<137.5 mmol/L) were associated with an increased risk of 30, 90, 365-day, and 4-year all-cause deaths. The HRs and 95th confidence intervals were 0.96 (0.94, 0.99), 0.96 (0.94, 0.99), 0.96 (0.94, 0.98), and 0.96 (0.95, 0.98), respectively; the higher serum sodium levels (≥137.5 mmol/L) were related to an associated multiplied risk of 30, 90, 365-day, and 4-year all-cause deaths; the HRs and 95th confidence intervals were 1.02 (1.00, 1.05), 1.02 (1.00, 1.04), 1.02 (1.00, 1.03), and 1.02 (1.00, 1.03), respectively. CONCLUSION Serum sodium levels were u-shaped about all-cause mortality. In individuals with CHF, serum sodium levels are linked to an elevated risk of short-, medium-, and long-term all-cause mortality.

Abstract
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a prevalent and risky pregnant complication which warrants targeted therapy for restriction the inflammation and apoptosis of trophoblast cells. This study sought to analyze the aberrant expression and regulatory mechanism of microRNA (miR)-134-5p in GDM. The miR-134-5p expression in the serum of GDM patients and normal participants was detected via qRT-PCR, followed by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. In vitro GDM cell model was established in the HTR-8/SVneo cells using 25 mmol/L glucose, followed by transfection with miR-134-5p inhibitor and si-Forkhead box p2(FOXP2). The miR-134-5p and FOXP2 expressions, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-10 levels, cell proliferation, migration, and apoptosis were determined by a combination of qRT-PCR, western blot, ELISA, and cell counting Kit-8, Transwell assay, and flow cytometry. The binding relationship between miR-134-5p and FOXP2 was predicted and verified. Our results revealed that miR-134-5p was increased in the serum of GDM patients and could serve as a critical diagnostic marker for GDM. Moreover, miR-134-5p was upregulated in the high glucose (HG)-induced HTR-8/SVneo cells. The miR-134-5p inhibition suppressed the inflammation and apoptosis of HG-induced HTR-8/SVneo cells. miR-134-5p inhibited FOXP2 expression. FOXP2 expression was decreased in GDM. FOXP2 inhibition attenuated the function of miR-134-5p in HG-induced HTR-8/SVneo cells. Overall, miR-134-5p inhibited the FOXP2 expression to facilitate the inflammation and apoptosis of trophoblast cells, thereby exacerbating GDM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence regarding the relationship between the type of anaesthesia and length of hospital stay is controversial. Therefore, the objective of this research was to investigate whether the type of anaesthesia was independently related to the length of hospital stay in patients undergoing unilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) after adjusting for other covariates. METHODS The present study was a cohort study. A total of 2622 participants underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA) at a hospital in Singapore from 2013 to 1-1 to 2014-6-30. The target independent variable and the dependent variable were two types of anaesthesia and length of hospital stay, respectively. The covariates included age, BMI, hemoglobin (Hb), length of stay (LOS), duration of surgery, sex, ethnicity, American Society of Anesthesiologist (ASA) Status, smoking, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), diabetes mellitus (DM), DM on insulin, ischemic heart disease (IHD), congestive cardiac failure (CCF), cerebrovascular accident (CVA), creatinine > 2 mg/dl, day of week of operation. Multivariate linear and logistic regression analyses were performed on the variables that might influence the choice of the two types of anaesthesia and the LOS. This association was then tested by subgroup analysis using hierarchical variables. RESULTS The average age of 2366 selected participants was 66.57 ± 8.23 years old, and approximately 24.18% of them were male. The average LOS of all enrolled patients was 5.37 ± 4.87 days, 5.92 ± 6.20 days for patients receiving general anaesthesia (GA) and 5.09 ± 3.98 days for patients receiving regional anaesthesia (RA), P < 0.05. The results of fully adjusted linear regression showed that GA lasted 0.93 days longer than RA (β = 0.93, 95% CI (0.54, 1.32)), P < 0.05. The results of fully adjusted logistic regression showed that LOS > 6 days was 45% higher for GA than for RA (OR = 1.45, 95% CI (1.15, 1.84)), P < 0.05. Through the subgroup analysis, the results were basically stable and reliable. CONCLUSION Our study showed that GA increased the length of stay during unilateral TKA compared with RA. This finding needs to be validated in future studies.

Abstract
Using combined data from the Relativistic Heavy Ion and Large Hadron Colliders, we constrain the shear and bulk viscosities of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at temperatures of ∼150-350 MeV. We use Bayesian inference to translate experimental and theoretical uncertainties into probabilistic constraints for the viscosities. With Bayesian model averaging we propagate an estimate of the model uncertainty generated by the transition from hydrodynamics to hadron transport in the plasma's final evolution stage, providing the most reliable phenomenological constraints to date on the QGP viscosities.

Abstract
Abstract
Background:Artificial femoral head replacement is one of the most effective methods for treatment of severe diseases of femoral joint in the elderly. The ideal anesthetic effect is one of the key elements for the success of the operation because it brings fast recovery. However, the multiple comorbidities of the elder patients make them too weak to tolerate the hemodynamic changes after anesthesia. In this case, the most suitable anesthesia method for patients undergoing femoral head replacement surgery is of great significance.Objective:To compare the post-anesthetic hemodynamic changes between combined lumbar plexus and sciatic nerve block(CLPSB) and combined spinal and epidural anesthesia(CSEA) in elderly patients undergoing unilateral artificial femoral head replacement.Methods:We reviewed records of the patients who aged over 60 years old (age 62-103 years) and received unilateral artificial femoral head replacement between January 2015 and December 2020 in the first affiliated hospital of Shantou University Medical College. After adjustment according to the inclusion criteria, 477 patients were included and divided into CLPSB group (n=90) and CSEA group (n=387). The primary outcome was comparison of the hemodynamic changes after anesthesia, including the systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP) and heart rate (HR). The second outcome was the comparison of the vasopressor used during the surgery.Results:We established three models to compare the two anesthesia methods on hemodynamic changes. Crude model included all variates for analysis, while model I adjusted age and gender. Model II adjusted other comorbidities in addition to model I. All three models exhibit that changes of MAP (∆MAP) after CSEA were higher than that after CLPSB(β= 6.88, 95% CI: 4.33 - 9.42, P < 0.0001), with significant difference, which indicated that CSEA causes higher fluctuation of MAP. Concurrently, the use of vasopressors increased by 137% (OR=2.37, 95%CI: 1.24-4.53, P=0.0091) in the CSEA group, which is statistically significant. However, the changes of HR (∆HR) between the CLPSB and CSEA was not significant(β= 0.50, 95% CI: 1.62 - 2.62, P = 0.6427). Conclusions:Both CLPSB and CSEA are ideal anesthesia methods for patients receiving femoral head eplacement, though CLPSB is more suitable for elderly patients with advanced hemodynamic stability.

Abstract
This roadmap on Nanotechnology for Catalysis and Solar Energy Conversion focuses on the application of nanotechnology in addressing the current challenges of energy conversion: 'high efficiency, stability, safety, and the potential for low-cost/scalable manufacturing' to quote from the contributed article by Nathan Lewis. This roadmap focuses on solar-to-fuel conversion, solar water splitting, solar photovoltaics and bio-catalysis. It includes dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), perovskite solar cells, and organic photovoltaics. Smart engineering of colloidal quantum materials and nanostructured electrodes will improve solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency, as described in the articles by Waiskopf and Banin and Meyer. Semiconductor nanoparticles will also improve solar energy conversion efficiency, as discussed by Boschloo et al in their article on DSSCs. Perovskite solar cells have advanced rapidly in recent years, including new ideas on 2D and 3D hybrid halide perovskites, as described by Spanopoulos et al 'Next generation' solar cells using multiple exciton generation (MEG) from hot carriers, described in the article by Nozik and Beard, could lead to remarkable improvement in photovoltaic efficiency by using quantization effects in semiconductor nanostructures (quantum dots, wires or wells). These challenges will not be met without simultaneous improvement in nanoscale characterization methods. Terahertz spectroscopy, discussed in the article by Milot et al is one example of a method that is overcoming the difficulties associated with nanoscale materials characterization by avoiding electrical contacts to nanoparticles, allowing characterization during device operation, and enabling characterization of a single nanoparticle. Besides experimental advances, computational science is also meeting the challenges of nanomaterials synthesis. The article by Kohlstedt and Schatz discusses the computational frameworks being used to predict structure-property relationships in materials and devices, including machine learning methods, with an emphasis on organic photovoltaics. The contribution by Megarity and Armstrong presents the 'electrochemical leaf' for improvements in electrochemistry and beyond. In addition, biohybrid approaches can take advantage of efficient and specific enzyme catalysts. These articles present the nanoscience and technology at the forefront of renewable energy development that will have significant benefits to society.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the effects of microRNA (miR)‑214 on neuroapoptosis induced by propofol and the possible mechanism of its anti‑apoptotic effects. Initially, it was observed that miR‑214 expression was upregulated in propofol‑induced neuroapoptosis rats. Next, propofol‑treated nerve cells were transfected with miR‑214 mimics. The results revealed that miR‑214 overexpression induced apoptosis, inhibited cell proliferation, inhibited cyclin D1 protein expression, promoted caspase‑3 activity and B‑cell lymphoma 2‑associated X protein expression, and enhanced the levels of inflammation factors in nerve cells treated with propofol. In addition, miR‑214 overexpression suppressed phosphoinositide 3‑kinase/protein kinase B (PI3K/Akt) signaling by targeting the activation of phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) and nuclear factor‑κB expression in nerve cells treated with propofol. Treatment with a PTEN inhibitor successfully suppressed the PTEN protein expression and decreased the apoptosis of propofol‑treated nerve cells subsequent to miR‑214 overexpression through PI3K/Akt signaling. In conclusion, the present study data revealed that miR‑214 suppressed propofol‑induced neuroapoptosis through the activation of PI3K/Akt signaling by targeting PTEN expression.

Abstract
The mechanical contact between medical textiles and skin is relevant in the health care for patients with vulnerable skin or chronic wounds. In order to gain new insights into the skin-textile contact on the microscopic level, the 3D surface topography of a normal and a new hospital bed sheet with a regular surface structure was measured using a digital microscope. The topographic data was analysed concerning material distribution and real contact area against smooth surfaces as a function of surface deformations. For contact conditions that are relevant for the skin of patients lying in a hospital bed it was found that the order of magnitude of the ratio of real and apparent contact area between textiles and skin or a mechanical skin model lies between 0.02 and 0.1 and that surface deformations, i.e. penetration of the textile surface asperities into skin or a mechanical skin model, range from 10 to 50µm. The performed analyses of textile 3D surface topographies and comparisons with previous friction measurement results provided information on the relationship between microscopic surface properties and macroscopic friction behaviour of medical textiles. In particular, the new bed sheet was found to be characterised by a trend towards a smaller microscopic contact area (up to a factor of two) and by a larger free interfacial volume (more than a factor of two) in addition to a 1.5 times lower shear strength when in contact with counter-surfaces. The applied methods can be useful to develop improved and skin-adapted materials and surfaces for medical applications.

Abstract
The critically refracted longitudinal (L(CR)) wave can be used in numerous non-destructive testing (NDT) applications, such as characterization of surface geometric aspects, subsurface defect detection and mostly for residual stress measurement. However, very few works characterize the associated ultrasonic beam. This paper deals with characterization of the L(CR) beam profile both numerically and experimentally in order to optimize the incident angle choice in order to have sufficient energy in the experimental signal. The simulations are performed in time and frequency domains concerning solid elastic, homogenous and isotropic materials taking into account the liquid-solid interaction of the excitation by a water-coupled transducer. In the obtained results all components of the refracted acoustical field are demonstrated, as well as energy distributions of L(CR) wave obtained with different incident angles.

Abstract
This article documents the addition of 228 microsatellite marker loci to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Anser cygnoides, Apodemus flavicollis, Athene noctua, Cercis canadensis, Glis glis, Gubernatrix cristata, Haliotis tuberculata, Helianthus maximiliani, Laricobius nigrinus, Laricobius rubidus, Neoheligmonella granjoni, Nephrops norvegicus, Oenanthe javanica, Paramuricea clavata, Pyrrhura orcesi and Samanea saman. These loci were cross-tested on the following species: Apodemus sylvaticus, Laricobius laticollis and Laricobius osakensis (a proposed new species currently being described).

Abstract
We evaluated the incidence, timing, and consequences of urolithiasis in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). A total of 20 patients with urolithiasis were identified from 2095 patients with ALL treated at St Jude Children's Research Hospital on consecutive protocols between 1968 and 1998. For remission induction therapy, all patients received daily prednisone; continuation chemotherapy regimens differed by protocol with some including pulses of prednisone or dexamethasone and others no glucocorticoid. Patients with urolithiasis were older at diagnosis of ALL than those without urolithiasis (median age, 7.5 vs 5.0 years; P=0.03) and less likely to be black (P=0.03) than white or Hispanic, but sex and treatment era did not differ. Presenting symptoms included abdominal or flank pain, hematuria, and dysuria. All stones analyzed biochemically were calcium stones. The incidence of urolithiasis after completion of therapy was 1.8 per 10 000 person-years. Compared to this baseline rate, the relative risk of urolithiasis was 45 (P<0.01) during induction therapy, 22 (P<0.01) during continuation therapy with glucocorticoids, and 5.1 (P>0.05) during continuation therapy without glucocorticoids. Urolithiasis occurred 4.5 times more often during continuation treatment with glucocorticoids than without (P<0.05). Seven patients (35%) had recurrent urolithiasis. Patients with ALL are at risk of developing calcium renal stones during chemotherapy, especially when a glucocorticoid is included.

Abstract
The sustained-release effects of codried excipient of modified Ganoderma (treated with alkaline solution) and microcrystalline cellulose at different ratios were examined using acetaminophen (ACT) as a model drug. Results demonstrate that the crushing strength of most ACT tablets made with codried powder at all ratios increased as compaction force increased; but a rapid decline was observed when compression force exceeded 2 tons. Drug release from tablets compressed at 0.5 ton increased as modified Ganoderma fiber content increased. But when the compression force exceeded 1 ton, the release rate was not influenced by the compaction force or the increasing content of Ganoderma fiber. However, the dissolution of ACT from these tablets could be sustained for longer than 24 h. The extent of drug release was shown to increase with increasing amounts of modified Ganoderma in the codried excipient. The addition of disintegrants could further accelerate the drug release from the tablet. Drug release was also dependent upon the amount and kind of disintegrant used. The influence was in the following order: primojel>crospovidone>starch 1500.

Abstract
Plant granules (phi 2-3 mm) made of starch, gelatin and medicine plant powder were used to kill Oncomelania hupensis. The results showed that after eating the plant granules, the mortality of the snail was 92.5%-100% within 24 hrs. The poison effect of the plant granules was much better than that of others, e.g., they could kill snails 12-24 h earlier than Niclosamidum (1 x 10(-3) g.L-1). In a field experiment, the snail mortality was up to 61.5% by using plant granules.

Abstract
A laboratory experiment at 20 +/- 5 degrees C shows that the water extract of fresh Nerium indicum had an obvious effect on killing Oncomelania hupensis. Treated with 0.1% water extract for four days, the mortality of O. hupensis was up to 100%. The effect of different tissues of N. indicum on O. hupensis was in order of stem phloem > leaf > root phloem > flower. The effect of N. indicum on O. hupensis was about ten times higher than that of Pterocarya stenoptera and Rumex japonicus, and was equal to that of 1 x 10(-3) mg.L-1 niclosamidum.

Abstract
After ultraviolet radiation treated at various time, the Raman spectra of herring sperm DNA in aqueous solution were presented. The analytic results showed that first, the out-ring amino group numeration of cytosine C4 site have reducing in the form of Raman hypochromicity; but C4O ketone group of derivative uracil assumed have not emerge with Raman hyperchromiciuy, in UV-induced DNA only with water molecule join in; second, the electron cloud of the main-groove side in pyrimidine ring have a tendency of slanting toward C6 site, which was beneficial to the deamination of C-->U transition, after some cytosine formed dipyrimidine with another adjacent pyrimidine; and third, with UV radiation, the characteristic peak 616 cm-1 of uracil N3C4 has arisen. Its very important, because the quality of the N3C4 bond have a great difference between cytosine and uracil. The result have not supported the model that cytosine can direct to be come off amino group for form the ketone type uracilo depend on UV-induced, therefore we have found that the process of get involved in imino tautomer state was probable exist by Raman spectroscopic technique.

Abstract
By different temperature treatment, the herring sperm DNA fibers at various relative humidity have been analyzed using Raman scattering spectroscopic method for estimation of bound water content in fiber according to the typical peak intensity ratio between deoxyribosyl C-H stretching vibration (at 2964cm(-1)) and bound water O-H stretching vibration (at 3204cm(-1)). We found the bound water content of the fibers to be 9-14 water molecules per nucleotide pair (i.e. base pair) at variance with the calculated value of calf thymus DNA fiber by Tao's Raman test formula, but in similarity to the determined value by IR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, BET gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry analysis. Thus, herring sperm DNA fibers should have the same hydration state as both calf thymus DNA and salmon sperm DNA, that has been confirmed with the new formula: 2.5926 x I2964/I3204.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the reirradiation therapy in late recurrent vaginal malignancy after initial radiotherapy for carcinoma of the cervix. METHODS From July 1972 to July 1992, 73 cases of late recurrent (over 5 years) vaginal malignancy after initial radiotherapy for cervical cancer were treated in our hospital. Both the original and recurrent cancers were biopsy-proven squamous cell carcinoma. All of these patients received reirradiation therapy; chemotherapy or operation was combined when necessary. The reirradiation was planned according to the site and volume of the recurrent tumor, previous radiation dose, and radiation side effects. Brachytherapy was mainly used. Before 1981, radium therapy was delivered at 30-40 Gy in 3-5 fractions to tumor base within 3-4 weeks. High-dose-rate (100 cGy/min) cobalt-60 afterloading therapy (Ralstron therapy) has been used instead of radium since 1981; the dose to the tumor base was 20-35 Gy/3-5 fractions/3-4 weeks. Then, vaginal mold was supplemented with a dose to a point 0.5 cm below the surface of the vaginal mucosa at 20-30 Gy/4-6 fractions/2-3 weeks. When the vulva or groin was involved, cobalt-60 or high-energy electron beam radiation was added with a dose at 30-40 Gy. Among these, 61 patients received irradiation therapy alone. Eleven patients received irradiation combined with chemotherapy. One patient received hysterectomy after reirradiation. RESULTS The 2-, 3-, and 5-year survival rates in this series were 54.7% (40/73), 46. 6% (28/60), and 40.3% (21/52), respectively. The 5-year survival rates for upper, upper-middle, and upper-lower vaginal tumor were 81. 8% (9/11), 33.3% (5/15), and 25.0% (3/12), respectively. The effect for upper vaginal recurrent malignancy was remarkably better than that for the upper-lower rate (P < 0.05). The local control rates for tumor >4 and <4 cm were 26.6% (4/15) and 86.5% (32/37), respectively (P < 0.01). The side effects of reirradiation in this series were serious: both moderate and severe radiation reactions were rectum 13.6% (10/73), hematuria 12.3% (9/73), vesicovaginal fistula 1.4% (1/73), and rectum-vaginal fistula 11.0% (8/73). CONCLUSIONS We conclude that reirradiation for late recurrence in the vagina after previous radiotherapy for cervical cancer is valuable. Early detection and treatment could achieve better results. The smaller the recurrent tumor volume, the better the treatment effects. Reirradiation therapy should be carefully managed in order to reduce the complications as much as possible.

Abstract
The pBR322 recombinant plasmids DNA products, which purified by phenol-extract and equilibrium centrifugation in CsCl-ethidium bromide gradients, have been shown as mainly spatial conformation of covalently closed circular DNA (i.e. cccDNA) by agarose gel electrophoresis for homogeneity detection. Laser Raman spectra in the region 450-1750 cm-1 have been obtained for the circular double-stranded plasmids DNA molecule in an aqueous solution, indicating not only contain those marker peaks of secondary structure as in conventional B-form of DNA, but also present both 854 and 1083 cm-1 diagnostic bands of reflecting the vibration state of deoxyribosyl phosphodiester backbone. The present analysis have demonstrated relationship between the superhelical state for cccDNA and the two conformational marker bands that can be considered as the tertiary structure marker on plasmids DNA. Because of markedly Raman hypochromicity of charecter band 1378cm-1 of dT in contrast to liear DNA molecule, as well as the carbonyl double bond vibration line of dT have shifted to higher wave number position, the base stacking analysis represent occurrence of both increase in staking reaction activity of dT, and injury of a number of the Hoogsteen hydrogen bond between dA and dT with exist supercoil structure in cccDNA.

Abstract
This article introduces a new electrocardiogam telephone transmitting and central ambulatory monitoring (receiving) system, and a device used for monitoring and transmitting the user's electrocardiogram. We also give some detailed discussion about the real time the flow display of ECG, and the signal preprocessing method based on the design of optimum FIR linear phase digital filter for the detection of QRS complexes.
