Abstract
The proportion of individuals whose cardio-respiratory fitness change after endurance training does not exceed the test's measurement error can be 40 %. We determined if progressively increasing treadmill run intensity compared to maintaining the same run intensity, improved the responder proportion to a 6-week 20-minute treadmill training regimen. The intervention response standard deviation method estimated the proportion of responders attributable to progressively increasing run intensity. The mixed-effects model demonstrated V̇O2 peak improved significantly more in the progressive versus constant run intensity group. The proportion of V̇O2 peak responses above the smallest worthwhile change attributable to progressively increasing run intensity was 63.6 %.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The prospective cohort design is an important research design, but a common challenge is missing data. The purpose of this study is to compare three approaches to managing missing data, the pairwise (n = 1386 children), the partial or modified pairwise (n = 1019) and the listwise (n = 546), to characterize the trajectories of children's free sugars intake (FSI) across early childhood. METHODS By applying the Group-based Trajectory Model Technique to three waves of data collected from a prospective cohort study of South Australian children, this study examined the three approaches in managing missing data to validate and discuss children's FSI trajectories. RESULTS Each approach identified three distinct trajectories of child's FSI from 1 to 5 years of age: (1) 'low and fast increasing', (2) 'moderate and increasing' and (3) 'high and increasing'. The trajectory memberships were consistent across the three approaches, and were for the pairwise scenario (1) 15.1%, (2) 68.3% and (3) 16.6%; the partial or modified pairwise (1) 15.9%, (2) 64.1% and (3) 20.0%; and the listwise (1) 14.9%, (2) 64.9% and (3) 20.2% of children. CONCLUSIONS Given the comparability of the findings across the analytical approaches and the samples' characteristics between baseline and across different data collection waves, it is recommended that the pairwise approach be used in future analyses to optimize the sample size and statistical power when examining the relationship between FSI in the first years of life and health outcome such as dental caries.

Abstract
Background Advances in preoperative chemoradiotherapy and surgical techniques offered improvements in rates of locoregional recurrence but did not address distant metastasis. Traditionally, adjuvant chemotherapy has been administered with the goal of limiting systemic recurrences. Objective Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer after preoperative chemoradiotherapy and surgery. Methods From January 2017 to December 2018, 103 patients diagnosed with clinical stage II or III rectal cancer received adjuvant chemotherapy with capecitabine or XELOX regimens after neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy and total mesorectal excision. Overall survival, disease-free survival, and toxicity were analyzed. Results The median follow-up time was 52.5 months (6.5-66.8 months). The mean 3-year disease-free survival and 3-year overall survival were 86.2% (95% CI: 82.8-89.6) and 92.2% (95% CI: 86.9-97.5), respectively. The rate of hematologic and nonhematologic toxicity was low, mostly grades 1 and 2 including anemia, leucopenia, thrombocytopenia, and liver enzymes elevations were 85.4, 50.5, 42.8, and 45.6%, respectively. Conclusion The capecitabine and XELOX regimen in adjuvant settings for rectal cancer patients receiving neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and surgery was a safe and effective modality. Further randomized trials need to be conducted to evaluate the role of postoperative therapy for these individuals.

Abstract
Background Vulnerability to suicidality is a concern among older adults, particularly as this proportion of the population is growing. Determining what factors contribute to suicidality will help to create a framework for understanding and assessing suicidal risk among older adults and developing effective treatments. This study examined suicidality among older Australian adults. Methods This study forms part of a larger study to trial a survey to collect cross-sectional data on the mental and physical health of older Australian adults across time. One hundred and fourteen Australian residents aged 65 years and over completed an anonymous survey online or by returning a paper-and-pencil version of the survey by post. The survey took approximately 25 min to complete and comprised of (1) sociodemographic questions (e.g., age, gender, education), (2) validated questionnaires measuring depression, general anxiety, psychological distress, insomnia, substance dependence, problem gambling, and stress, and (3) mental and physical health and wellbeing items (e.g., religiosity, assistance with daily tasks, and mental health service usage in the last 12-months). The dependent variable, suicidality, was measured by asking participants whether they had ever seriously thought about committing suicide. Results Associations with suicidality were analyzed using Chi-squares and independent samples t-tests. The results found suicidality to be significantly associated with lower levels of satisfaction with the frequency of seeing and/or communicating with friends, and inadequate levels of community engagement. Conclusion The results of this survey reinforce the importance of social connectedness as a central and significant protective factor against suicidality among older adults.

Abstract
Glinus oppositifolius is an endemic herbaceous plant found in tropical Asian countries and is native in Vietnam. It is used in traditional folk medicine because of its flavor and antiseptic and laxative effects. In the current research, the effects of Tox-off, Biovip, and the purified compounds isolated from G. oppositifolius in the previous study were evaluated on the activation of adenosine 5'-monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACC) in C2C12 myoblasts. In addition, the most potent active compounds, traphanoside-GO1 (TRA-GO1) and TRA-GO5 have validated the reduction of fatty acid synthase (FAS) and sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP)-1c in HepG2 cells. We found that Tox-off and Biovip significantly increased the phosphorylation of AMPK and ACC in C2C12 myoblasts. Furthermore, TRA-GO1 and TRA-GO5 significantly increased the AMPK activation and phosphorylation of its downstream substrate ACC in a concentration-dependent way compared to the dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) control. Besides, the protein level of FAS and SREBP-1c decreased by TRA-GO1 and TRA-GO5 in a concentration-dependent manner. Taken together, our results showed that the increased AMPK and ACC phosphorylation by active components of G. oppositifolius may activate the AMPK signaling pathways, which are useful for the anti-obesity and its related metabolic disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Movement towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC) can improve health services, risk factor management, and inequality in non-communicable diseases (NCD); conversely, prioritizing and monitoring NCD management can support pathways to UHC in resource-limited settings. We aimed to estimate trends in NCD management indicators in Vietnam from 2010, and projections to 2030 at national and sub-national levels; compute the probability of reaching UHC targets; and measure inequalities in NCD management indicators at demographic, geographic, and socio-economic levels. METHODS We included data of 37,595 households from four nationally representative surveys from 2010. We selected and estimated the coverage of NCD health service and risk management indicators nationally and by six sub-national groups. Using Bayesian models, we provided trends and projections and calculated the probability of reaching UHC targets of 80% coverage by 2030. We estimated multiple inequality indices including the relative index of inequality, slope index of inequality, and concentration index of inequality, and provided an assessment of improvement in inequalities over the study period. FINDINGS Nationally, all indicators showed a low probability of achieving 2030 targets except sufficient use of fruit and vegetables (SUFV) and non-use of tobacco (NUT). We observed declining trends in national coverage of non-harmful use of alcohol (NHUA), sufficient physical activity (SPA), non-overweight (NOW), and treatment of diabetes (TOD). Except for SPA, no indicator showed the likelihood of achieving 2030 targets at any regional level. Our model suggested a non-achievement of 2030 targets for all indicators in any wealth quintile and educational level, except for SUFV and NUT. There were diversities in tendency and magnitude of inequalities with widening gaps between genders (SPA, TOD), ethnic groups (SUFV), urban-rural areas (TOH), wealth quintiles, and educational levels (TOD, NUT, NHUA). INTERPRETATION Our study suggested slow progress in NCD management at the national level and among key sub-populations in Vietnam, together with existing and increasing inequalities between genders, ethnicities, geographic areas, and socioeconomic groups. We emphasised the necessity of continuously improving the healthcare system and facilities, distributing resources between geographic areas, and simultaneously integrating economic, education, and gender intervention and programs. The relationship between team dynamics with healthcare coordination and clinical work satisfaction among Commune Health Workers: A Bayesian model averaging study. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the relationship between team dynamics with healthcare coordination and clinical job satisfaction of the community health workers (CHWs). METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among 133 health workers (including doctors, nurses, or midwives) at 21 Commune Health Cent in Quoc Oai District, Vietnam, from July 2015 to May 2017. A self-administered questionnaire consisting of 5-Likert items regarding team dynamics and healthcare coordination clinical work satisfaction was utilised. Descriptive statistics and correlation matrix were applied for seven factors of team dynamic, clinical work satisfaction, and patient care coordination queried by primary care providers. Bayesian model averaging (BMA) was used to identify the predictors of the level of team dynamics and healthcare coordination. RESULTS The mean score of overall team dynamics among the study participants was 4.08. Clinical work satisfaction and patient care coordination scores among resident physicians were higher than those of attending clinicians; however, the differences were not statistically significant. The results of BMA analysis indicated that team dynamics significantly associated with clinical work satisfaction, and it explains 9% of the total variance in clinical work satisfaction. Team dynamics level was also positively associated with patient care coordination. Patient care coordination was not a significant mediator between team dynamics and clinical work satisfaction. CONCLUSION Team dynamics is a potential contributor to improving patient care coordination and clinical job satisfaction of CHWs. As no significant correlation between patient care coordination and clinical job satisfaction was observed, to improve team performance, providing conditions that facilitate team building and teamwork should be conducted for CHWs in CHCs.

Abstract
Effort-Reward imbalance scale helps measure and manage work stress and mental issue. It is validated using confirmatory factor analysis and logistic regression model. The scale has adequate reliability and validity to be used among Vietnamese nurses. Poor self-rated health is more often reported among nurses with higher ER-ratio. Vietnamese scale is available for managing health forces, toward Health for All.
We translated the Effort-Reward imbalance questionnaire, an instrument for measuring work stress, into the Vietnamese language and investigated its psychometric properties among nurses in Vietnam. In a hospital-based cross-sectional study design, we sampled and interviewed 207 nurses working full-time (response rate 83%). We evaluated the internal consistency using standardized Cronbach's alpha coefficients and structural validity using confirmatory factor analysis. Discriminative validity was assessed by comparing the measured scores between age groups, gender, education levels, income groups, and job positions. In addition, we confirmed the criterion validity by investigating its association with self-reported health using simple and multiple logistic regression models. Most of the participants were female (73.3%), young (average 28.5 years old), and had education levels of college or higher (53.5%). We observed sufficient internal consistency in effort, reward, and over-commitment scales (Cronbach's alpha 0.80, 0.76, and 0.68, respectively). Confirmatory factor analysis of the three-factor hierarchical model showed an acceptable fit and fair construct validity with most moderate or stronger (>0.3) factor loading coefficients. Poor self-rated health was more likely in respondents in both Effort-Reward ratio's middle tertile (adjusted Odd-Ratio = 2.80, p-value = 0.031) and highest tertile (adjusted Odd-Ratio = 2.64, p-value = 0.05), adjusting for age, gender, and education levels. The Effort-reward imbalance scale has adequate reliability and validity for assessing work stress among nurses in Vietnam. Its significant association with poor self-rated health warrants further investigation. The validated instrument can help measure the effort-reward imbalance to manage better work-related emotional strains and mental health issues among nurses and ensure human resources' stability in healthcare in Vietnam.

Abstract
Background To assess the reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH) service coverage in Vietnam with trends in 2000−2014, projections and probability of achieving targets in 2030 at national and sub-national levels; and to analyze the socioeconomic, regional and urban-rural inequalities in RMNCH service indicators. Methods We used national population-based datasets of 44,624 households in Vietnam from 2000 to 2014. We applied Bayesian regression models to estimate the trends in and projections of RMNCH indicators and the probabilities of achieving the 2030 targets. Using the relative index, slope index, and concentration index of inequality, we examined the patterns and trends in RMNCH coverage inequality. Findings We projected that 9 out of 17 health service indicators (53%) would likely achieve the 2030 targets at the national level, including at least one and four ANC visits, BCG immunization, access to improved water and adequate sanitation, institutional delivery, skilled birth attendance, care-seeking for pneumonia, and ARI treatment. We observed very low coverages and zero chance of achieving the 2030 targets at national and sub-national levels in early initiation and exclusive breastfeeding, family planning needs satisfied, and oral rehydration therapy. The most deprived households living in rural areas and the Northwest, Northeast, North Central, Central Highlands, and Mekong River Delta regions would not reach the 80% immunization coverage of DPT3, Polio3, Measles and full immunization. We found socioeconomic, regional, and urban-rural inequalities in all RMNCH indicators in 2014 and no change in inequalities over 15 years in the lowest-coverage indicators. Interpretation Vietnam has made substantial progress toward UHC. By improving the government's health system reform efforts, re-allocating resources focusing on people in the most impoverished rural regions, and restructuring and enhancing current health programs, Vietnam can achieve the UHC targets and other health-related SDGs. Abstract
In responding to the COVID‐19 pandemic, each country is presented with both opportunities and challenges, some unique and some shared with the global community. It is important to not only recognize, but to embrace them as drivers of the public to the current pandemic success. In this commentary, we discuss the opportunities and challenges that may affect ongoing public health programming in Australia within the current context of epidemiology. COVID‐19 within Australia has to date been effectively suppressed through the implementation of nationally coordinated, in which the state delivered public policy, guidelines and practice, and successful establishment of a comprehensive testing, contact tracing, patient isolation and contact quarantine regime combined with national and state social distancing, hygiene etiquette and movement restrictions. However, despite its success to date great challenges lay ahead for future public health policy with the threat of a second wave, or more likely, multiple smaller outbreaks across various population centres. Therefore, policies that aim to balance the twin socioeconomic and health impacts are crucial. The experience of Australia in managing its COVID‐19 response can provide a case study for other countries to reshape or adapt their policies and actions in the context of emerging global health crises.

Abstract
Japanese encephalitis (JE) is the major cause of viral encephalitis (VE) in most Asian-Pacific countries. In Vietnam, there is no nationwide surveillance system for JE due to lack of medical facilities and diagnoses. Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Culex vishnui, and Culex quinquefasciatus have been identified as the major JE vectors in Vietnam. The main objective of this study was to forecast a risk map of Culex mosquitoes in Hanoi, which is one of the most densely populated cities in Vietnam. A total of 10,775 female adult Culex mosquitoes were collected from 513 trapping locations. We collected temperature and precipitation information during the study period and its preceding month. In addition, the other predictor variables (e.g., normalized difference vegetation index [NDVI], land use/land cover and human population density), were collected for our analysis. The final model selected for estimating the Culex mosquito abundance included centered rainfall, quadratic term rainfall, rice cover ratio, forest cover ratio, and human population density variables. The estimated spatial distribution of Culex mosquito abundance ranged from 0 to more than 150 mosquitoes per 900m2. Our model estimated that 87% of the Hanoi area had an abundance of mosquitoes from 0 to 50, whereas approximately 1.2% of the area showed more than 100 mosquitoes, which was mostly in the rural/peri-urban districts. Our findings provide better insight into understanding the spatial distribution of Culex mosquitoes and its associated environmental risk factors. Such information can assist local clinicians and public health policymakers to identify potential areas of risk for JE virus. Risk maps can be an efficient way of raising public awareness about the virus and further preventive measures need to be considered in order to prevent outbreaks and onwards transmission of JE virus.

OBJECTIVES To evaluate the safety and efficacy of fitusiran treatment for people with moderate/severe hemophilia A or B with inhibitors. PATIENTS/METHODS In this open-label phase 1, part D study, 17 males with hemophilia A or B with inhibitors received three once-monthly subcutaneous injections of fitusiran 50 mg (n = 6) or 80 mg (n = 11); followed for up to 112 days. Endpoints included safety (primary), pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (secondary), annualized bleeding rate, and patient-reported outcomes (exploratory). RESULTS The most common adverse event was injection site erythema (n = 8). No thrombotic events were reported. At nadir, mean (standard error of the mean [SEM]) antithrombin activity decreased from baseline by 82.0% (2.2) and 87.4% (0.7) in the 50 mg and 80 mg groups, respectively. Antithrombin reduction was associated with increased thrombin generation. 11/17 (64.7%) participants had no bleeds during the observation period (mean [standard deviation] 69.4 [16.3] days). Mean (SEM) changes from baseline in Haemophilia Quality of Life Questionnaire for Adults total (-9.2 [2.9]) and physical health (-12.3 [3.9]) domain scores suggested clinically meaningful improvement. CONCLUSIONS Monthly fitusiran was generally well tolerated, lowered antithrombin levels from baseline, and resulted in improved thrombin generation. These preliminary results suggest that monthly fitusiran treatment may reduce bleeding episodes and improve quality of life in participants with hemophilia A or B with inhibitors.

Abstract
RATIONALE, AIMS AND OBJECTIVES Changes in, and predictors of, quality of life (QoL) among unstable angina patients are informative for both clinical and public health practice. However, there is little research on this topic, especially in health care settings with limited resources. This study aims to detect changes in QoL and its associated factors among patients with unstable angina after percutaneous coronary intervention. METHODS A longitudinal design was conducted with two repeated rounds of measurements, 1 and 3 months after intervention, using the generic SF-36 questionnaire, in 120 patients from Vietnam National Heart Institute. A linear mixed-effects model was used to assess changes in patient QoL over time while adjusting for other covariates. RESULTS Only two out of eight QoL subscales (social functioning and emotional well-being) declined after 1 month, but these tended to rise again after 3 months, while scores of all other QoL subscales increased. Adjusting for covariates, QoL increased slightly after 1 month of intervention (β = 0.65, 95%CI = -0.86 to 2.16) but improved by almost six QoL points after 3 months (β = 5.99, 95%CI = 4.48 to 7.50). Four confounders significantly associated with a decline in QoL were older age, being retired, living in rural areas, and having abnormal troponin level. CONCLUSION QoL of the patients with unstable angina improves significantly 3 months after intervention, rather than after 1 month. More attention should be given to patients, who are old, retired, live in rural areas and have abnormal troponin level.

Abstract
This article discussed Vietnam’s ongoing efforts to decentralize the health system and its fitness to respond to global health crises as presented through the Covid-19 pandemic. We used a general review and expert’s perspective to explore the topic. We found that the healthcare system in Vietnam continued to decentralize from a pyramid to a wheel model. This system shifts away from a stratified technical hierarchy of higher- and lower-level health units (pyramid model) to a system in which quality healthcare is equally expected among all health units (wheel model). This decentralization has delivered more quality healthcare facilities, greater freedom for patients to choose services at any level, a more competitive environment among hospitals to improve quality, and reductions in excess capacity burden at higher levels. It has also enabled the transformation from a patient-based traditional healthcare model into a patient-centered care system. However, this decentralization takes time and requires long-term political, financial commitment, and a working partnership among key stakeholders. This perspective provides Vietnam’s experience of the decentralization of the healthcare system that may be considered as a useful example for other countries to strategically think of and to shape their future system within their own socio-political context.

Abstract
Objectives: Although the World Health Organization (WHO) initiative “My 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene” has been lauded as effective in preventing hospital-associated infections, little is known about healthcare workers (HCWs)’ hand hygiene behavior. In this study, we sought to assess knowledge and attitudes towards the concepts in this initiative, as well as associated factors, among Vietnamese HCWs at a general hospital. Methods: A structured questionnaire was administered to HCWs at a central Vietnamese general hospital in 2015. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with HCWs’ knowledge and attitudes towards hand hygiene. Results: Of 120 respondents, 65.8% and 67.5% demonstrated appropriate knowledge and a positive attitude, respectively, regarding all 5 hand hygiene moments. Logistic regression indicated better knowledge of hand hygiene in workers who were over 30 years old, who were direct HCWs (rather than managers), who had frequent access to clinical information, and who received their clinical information from training. Those who worked in infectious and tropical disease wards, who had frequent access to clinical information, and who received information from training were more likely to have a positive attitude towards hand hygiene than their counterparts. Conclusions: Although many Vietnamese HCWs displayed moderate knowledge and positive attitudes towards the WHO hand hygiene guidelines, a key gap remained. Regular education and training programs are needed to increase knowledge and to improve attitudes and practices towards hand hygiene. Furthermore, a combination of multimodal strategies and locally-adapted interventions is needed for sustainable hand hygiene adherence.

in the region of the calmodulin-dependent kinase
isoform D (CaMK1D) gene are associated with increased incidence of
diabetes, with the most common polymorphism resulting in increased
recognition by transcription factors and increased protein expression.
While reducing CaMK1D expression has a potentially beneficial effect
on glucose processing in human hepatocytes, there are no known selective
inhibitors of CaMK1 kinases that can be used to validate or translate
these findings. Here we describe the development of a series of potent,
selective, and drug-like CaMK1 inhibitors that are able to provide
significant free target cover in mouse models and are therefore useful
as in vivo tool compounds. Our results show that
a lead compound from this series improves insulin sensitivity and
glucose control in the diet-induced obesity mouse model after both
acute and chronic administration, providing the first in vivo validation of CaMK1D as a target for diabetes therapeutics.

Abstract
Coping with the COVID‐19 pandemic has been painful and no single model for such a purpose is perfect. However, sharing experiences is the best way for countries to learn real‐time lessons and adapt to this rapidly changing pandemic. This commentary shares with the international community how an adaptive model of health system organization and responses helped Vietnam to break transmission of coronavirus. We find that an effective model is adaptive to time and context, and mobilizes and engages the wider society. We identify merging of different health system units into Center for Diseases Controls as a health system organization that saved massive resources. The early establishment of a formal committee responding to the pandemic helped unify every public health strategy. The mobilization of different stakeholders and communities added resources and facilitated a synchronous implementation of response strategies, even where those strategies involved significant personal or financial sacrifice. National training on Covid‐19 treatment for healthcare professionals across the entire hospital system was useful to expand the health service availability. Quickly published response guidelines helped to activate every level of the health system and involve every sector of society. A strategy of keeping high alert and preemptive action is also essential for coping with the pandemic.

Abstract
Towards the elimination of this global epidemic, understanding the high-risk behaviors of people newly diagnosed with HIV/AIDS (PNDWH) is essential. This study aimed to describe the general characteristics and high-risk behaviors of PNDWH and identify associated factors for adopting high-risk behaviors. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in Vietnam to explore the high-risk behaviors of 506 PNDWH. Associated factors were identified using multivariable logistic regressions. 83.2% of participants had sex without using a condom, and 27.9% had more than two sex partners. Among injected drug users, 44% had shared needles with an average number of 2.1 shared partners. Male, Kinh ethnicity (Vietnamese), high income, and high educational level were risk factors for high-risk behaviors. Our findings revealed the first time a comprehensive picture of PNDWH and emphasized the high prevalence of STIs, including untreated STIs and the long delay since the early HIV diagnosis. Also, our model found much higher risk behaviors among participants who were non-adherent to ART and those currently enrolled in ART. By better managing newly-diagnosed cases, better integrating STI management services and prevention consultants, as well as improving ART adherence programs, Vietnam can make better progress towards the complete control of HIV for its most vulnerable populations.

Abstract
Antithrombin (AT) reduction has been shown to improve thrombin generation (TG) in haemophilia with or without inhibitors. As treatment with bypassing agents (BPAs) may be required in patients with breakthrough bleeding while receiving AT-lowering therapy, we assessed TG in platelet-poor plasma samples from haemophilia patients in the presence of BPA (recombinant activated factor VII [rFVIIa; 1.25 or 2.5 μg mL-1] or activated prothrombin complex concentrate [aPCC; 0.5 or 1 U mL-1]) and AT reduction (anti-AT antibody). Mean ± SEM baseline peak thrombin height was 19.9 ± 4.3 nM in plasma from haemophilia patients (n = 12) and 230.5 ± 9.8 nM in healthy males (n = 24). Reduced AT improved mean peak thrombin height in haemophilia patient plasma to 75.4 ± 17.4 nM. Spiking of 90% AT-reduced haemophilia patient plasma with 2.5 μg mL-1 rFVIIa or 1 U mL-1 aPCC increased the mean peak thrombin height to 82.5 ± 12 nM and 134.8 ± 18.7 nM, respectively. Peak thrombin levels did not exceed the range for healthy volunteers when plasma samples from haemophilia patients with in vitro AT reduction were treated with BPAs, suggesting the potential use of BPAs in conjunction with AT reduction. Further clinical investigations are needed to confirm the safety of this approach.

Abstract
Background. Vietnam was one of 16 countries that implemented the second round of the GATS (Global Adult Tobacco Survey) in 2015. Aims. To assess knowledge and determinants of health consequences of different types of cigarette smoking among Vietnamese adults. Methods. A cross-sectional study among adults aged 15 years combined with using 15% of the master sample from the national sampling frame of the population and housing census was conducted. Multilevel analysis using Poisson regression was undertaken. Results. Knowledge on the health consequences of cigarette smoking has not significantly improved in the GATS-2015. Adults believe that active smoking had more of an impact on health than secondhand smoking and 24.5% and 43% of them answered that smoking light and e-cigarettes, respectively, causes less harm than regular cigarettes, and 17.3% and 18.1% of adults are not aware of the difference between them, respectively. Conclusion. Household and community's role had little impact in the adult knowledge of smoking health consequences. It is necessary to disseminate information on the "other tobacco product" and to improve public knowledge on specific health consequences, to enhance household and community's role in conveying health education messages to individuals.

Abstract
The threat of bacterial resistance to antibiotics has created an urgent need to develop new antimicrobials. The aim of this study was to characterize the chemical diversity of Litsea cubeba leaf essential oil (EO) and its impacts on the antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria. Essential oils collected from seven provinces in North Vietnam (n = 25) were characterized by their high content in either 1,8-cineole or linalool. Linalool-type EOs were more effective against the eight bacterial strains tested than 1,8-cineole-type. Oil samples, LC19 (50% 1,8-cineole) and BV27 (94% linalool), were selected to investigate their antibacterial mechanisms against Escherichia coli. A strong bactericidal effect was observed after 4 and 2 h of exposure respectively. Microscopic analysis of treated E. coli cultures clearly showed that EOs caused changes in cell morphology, loss of integrity and permeability of the cell membrane, as well as DNA loss. However, the effects of both EOs were distinct. LC19 mostly affected cell membrane, led to a significant cell filamentation rate and altered cell width, whereas BV27 damaged cell membrane integrity leading to cell permeabilization and altered nucleoid morphology with the appearance of spot and visibly altered compaction. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study aimed to characterize the chemical diversity of Litsea cubeba leaf essential oil (EO) and its impacts on its antibacterial activity. Two major chemotypes (1,8-cineole or linalool rich) were identified in North Vietnam and both were bactericidal against several pathogenic bacteria. A distinct inhibitory effect of EO samples on Escherichia coli was observed. 1,8-cineole-rich sample (LC19) affected cell membrane, led to cell filamentation and perturbation of cell width, while the linalool-rich one (BV27) induced damages in the cell membrane and changes in the nucleoid morphology. The study demonstrates the importance of considering chemotype variations in terms of chemical composition as well as the mode of action.

Abstract
Using low-cost and naturally available materials is considered an optimal adsorbent for removing phosphorus (P) from water due to its simplicity and economic efficiency. This study examined the removal of P from water using volcanic ash soil (VAS) by batch and column experiments. The maximum adsorption capacity of P was 2.94 mg g-1, estimated from the batch experiment according to a Langmuir isotherm. The column study showed a higher adsorption capacity of 5.57 mg g-1. The breakthrough curve showed that influent water containing 2 mg L-1 P was completely purified by VAS within 1,230 pore volumes (PV). The breakthrough and saturation points of the curves were 3,100 PV and 14,875 PV, respectively. After an adsorption column was loaded with 20,508 PV, a regeneration procedure was developed to determine whether an ion exchange of P with chloride occurred or adsorbed P in the columns could be eluted. Approximately 20% of P was recovered from columns by desorption tests, regardless of NaCl solution or deionized water. Specific surface area and mineral concentrations are both important characteristics that improve the adsorption capacity of VAS. The present study suggests that VAS is a promising adsorbent to remove P in water.

Abstract
AIMS The aims of this study were to characterize the antibacterial activity and the chemotype of Litsea cubeba leaf essential oil (EO) harvested in North Vietnam and to investigate the biological effects induced by the leaf powder on growth, nonspecific immunity and survival of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila. METHODS AND RESULTS The EO showed the prevalence of linalool (95%, n = 5). It was bactericidal against the majority of tested strains, with minimum inhibitory concentrations ranging from 0·72 to 2·89 mg ml(-1) (Aer. hydrophila, Edwarsiella tarda, Vibrio furnissii, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Streptococcus garvieae, Escherichia coli, Salmonella Typhimurium). The fish was fed with 0 (control), 2, 4 and 8% leaf powder supplementation diets for 21 days. Nonspecific immunity parameters (lysozyme, haemolytic and bactericidal activities of plasma) were assessed 21 days after feeding period and before the experimental infection. Weight gain, specific growth rate and feed conversion ratio were improved by supplementation of L. cubeba in a dose-related manner, and a significant difference appeared at the highest dose (8%) when compared to the control. The increase in plasma lysozyme was significant for all the treated groups. Haemolysis activity was higher for the groups fed with 4 and 8% plant powder. Antibacterial activity increased significantly for the 8% dose only. CONCLUSIONS Litsea cubeba leaf powder increased nonspecific immunity of carps in dose-related manner. After infection with Aer. hydrophila, survivals of fish fed with 4 and 8% L. cubeba doses were significantly higher than those fed with 2% dose and the control. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY A range of 4-8% L. cubeba leaf powder supplementation diet (from specific linalool-rich chemotype) can be used in aquaculture to reduce antibiotic burden and impacts of diseases caused by Aer. hydrophila.

Abstract
Multidrug-resistant tuberculosis is a major issue worldwide; however, accessibility to drug susceptibility testing (DST) is still limited in developing countries, owing to high costs and complexity. We developed a proportion method on 12-well microplates for DST. The assay reduced the time to results to <12 days and <10 days when bacterial growth was checked with the naked eye or a microscope, respectively. Comparison with the Canetti-Grosset method showed that the results of the two assays almost overlapped (kappa index 0.98 (95% CI 0.91-1.00) for isoniazid, rifampicin, streptomycin; and kappa index 0.92 (95% CI 0.85-0.99) for ethambutol). The sequencing of genes involved in drug resistance showed similar level of phenotype-genotype agreement between techniques. Finally, measurement of the MICs of rifampicin and ethambutol suggests that the currently used critical ethambutol concentration should be revised, and that the current molecular drug susceptibility tests for rifampicin need to be re-evaluated, as in vitro rifampicin-sensitive isolates could harbour drug resistance-associated mutation(s).

Abstract
A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 291 male motorbike taxi drivers (MMTDs) recruited through social mapping technique in Hanoi, Vietnam, for face-to-face interviews to examine factors associated with drug use among MMTDs using Information-Motivation-Behavioral skills (IMB) model. Among 291 MMTDs, 17.18% reported drug use sometime in their lives, 96% of whom were drug injectors. Being depressed, being originally borne in urban cities, currently residing in rural areas, having a longer time living apart from their wives/lovers, using alcohol, following Buddhism, and reporting lower motivation of HIV prevention predict significantly higher odds of uptaking drugs.

In Vietnam, many medicine sellers serving pharmacies and retail outlets do not have adequate professional qualifications, and there has been a limited institutional control. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to examine the prevalence and determinants of self-medication among medicine sellers in Hanoi, Vietnam. Although 96.55% of medicine sellers had relatively serious health problems, only 61.21% visited a healthcare facility, though self-medication was moderately high (approximately 39%). Adopting Andersen's conceptual model, it was identified that medicine sellers who reported higher professional education, had low confidence in healthcare services, had not received any professional in-service during the prior year, had less serious health problems and who perceived the current costs of healthcare as too high were more likely to report self-medication. The findings have public health policy implications for these healthcare providers in urban Vietnam and other similar developing countries.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In Vietnam, as doctor of medicine is socially considered a special career, both men and women who are enrolled in medical universities often study topics of medicine seriously. However, as culturally expected, women often perform better than men. Because of this, teaching leadership and management skill (LMS) to develop academic planning activity (APA) for female medical students would also be expected to be more effective than male counterparts. This research aimed to compare by gender the effect of teaching LMS on increasing APA, using propensity score matching (PSM). METHODS In a cross-sectional survey utilizing a self-reported structured questionnaire on a systematic random sample of 421 male and female medical students in Hanoi Medical University, this study adopted first regression techniques to construct a fit model, then PSM to create a matched control group in order to allow for evaluating the effect of LMS education. RESULTS There were several interesting gender differences. First, while for females LMS education had both direct and indirect effects on APA, it had only direct effect on males' APA. Second, after PSM to adjust for the possible confounders to balance statistically two groups - with and without LMS education, there is statistically a significant difference in APA between male and female students, making a net difference of 11% (p<.01), equivalent to 173 students. The difference in APA between exposed and matched control group in males and females was 9% and 20%, respectively. These estimates of 9.0 and 20.0 percentage point increase can be translated into the practice of APA by 142 males and 315 females, respectively, in the population. These numbers of APA among male and female students can be explained by LMS education. CONCLUSIONS Gender appears to be a factor explaining in part academic planning activity.

Abstract
Three sets of novel 4-deoxy-l-arabinose analogs were synthesized and evaluated as potential inhibitors of the bacterial resistance mechanism in which lipid A, on the outer membrane, is modified with 4-amino-4-deoxy-l-arabinose (l-Ara4N). One compound diminished the transfer of l-Ara4N onto lipid A. These results suggest that small molecules might be designed that would effect the same reversal of bacterial resistance observed in genetic knockouts.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVE - Nested case-control study aimed to assess the quality of life of community dwelling participants aged 65 years or over with newly diagnosed Essential Tremor (ET). METHODS AND RESULTS - Thirty-two participants with newly diagnosed ET and 32 age and gender matched controls were administered the Rand-SF36 quality of life questionnaire. Medical co-morbidities were also assessed in the two groups. Results - Participants with ET had significantly lower scores in the physical function, role limitation because of physical function, role limitation as a result of emotional problem, pain, and energy/vitality subscales of the Rand-SF36 when compared with controls. CONCLUSIONS - Older patients with newly diagnosed ET have poorer quality of life than their community dwelling counterparts without ET.

Abstract
The neonatal period is characterized by rapid growth and elevated rates of synthesis and accretion of skeletal muscle proteins. The fractional rate of muscle protein synthesis is very high at birth and declines rapidly with age. The elevated capacity for muscle protein synthesis in the neonatal pig is driven by the high ribosome content and, together with an increased efficiency of the translation process, promotes accelerated protein synthesis rates. Feeding profoundly stimulates muscle protein synthesis in neonatal pigs and the response decreases with age. The feeding-induced stimulation of muscle protein synthesis is modulated by an enhanced sensitivity to the postprandial increase in insulin and amino acids. The developmental decline in the response to insulin and amino acids parallels a marked decrease in the feeding-induced activation of translation initiation factors that regulate the binding of mRNA to the 40S ribosomal complex. The abundance and activation of many known positive regulators of the nutrient- and insulin-signaling pathways that are involved in translation initiation are high, whereas those of many negative regulators are low in skeletal muscle of younger pigs. Thus, the activation and(or) abundance of the positive regulators, such as the insulin receptor, insulin receptor-substrate-1, phosphoinositide-3 kinase, phosphoinositide-dependent kinase-1, protein kinase B, mammalian target of rapamycin, raptor, ribosomal protein S6 kinase-1, eukaryotic initiation factor (eIF) 4E-binding protein 1, and eIF4E associated with eIF4G, are greater in 7-d-old pigs than in 26-d-old pigs. The activation of negative regulators, including protein tyrosine phosphatase-1B, phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome 10, protein phosphatase 2A, and tuberous sclerosis complex 1/2, are lower in 7-d-old pigs than in 26-d-old pigs. Thus, the developmental decline in the stimulation of skeletal muscle protein synthesis by insulin and amino acids is due in part to the developmentally related decrease in the activation of the signaling pathways that lead to translation initiation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to investigate the associations between androgen status and markers of liver disease severity and to determine the effect of interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha) treatment on sex hormone levels in the context of hepatitis C infection. METHODS We audited liver biopsy and sex hormone data from 35 men with chronic hepatitis C and a separate group of 11 men with hepatitis C who received IFN-alpha treatment at Fremantle Hospital. RESULTS We found that men with low fibrosis scores (0-2) on the modified Knodell histological activity index were more likely to have lower sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels (38.2 +/- 13.2 vs 66.6 +/- 43.3 nmol/L, P < 0.001) and higher free testosterone levels (380.4 +/- 102.0 vs 255.9 +/-83.0 pmol/L, P = 0.01) than those with higher fibrosis scores (3-6). SHBG directly correlated with fibrosis scores (r = 0.37, P = 0.032). Free testosterone levels inversely correlated with liver fibrosis scores (r = -0.43, P = 0.011). A transient reduction in total testosterone of 5.7 +/- 4.2 nmol/L (P = 0.014) occurred within the first 6 months of IFN-alpha therapy although free testosterone was unaffected. CONCLUSION More severe liver disease was associated with lower free testosterone and higher SHBG. IFN-alpha therapy reduced total testosterone but not to hypogonadal levels, with no decline in free testosterone. These data suggest that liver disease in hepatitis C infection modulates androgen status indirectly via increased SHBG. Screening for androgen deficiency in the context of hepatitis C infection should selectively target men with more severe liver disease or documented higher grade fibrosis.

Abstract
The top priority in America's manned space flight program is the assurance of crew and vehicle safety. This priority gained greater focus during and after the Space Shuttle return-to-flight mission (STS-26). One of the interesting challenges has been to assure crew safety and adequate protection of the Space Shuttle, as a national resource, from increasingly diverse cargoes and operations. The control of hazards associated with the deployment of complex payloads and cargoes has involved many international participants. These challenges are examined in some detail along with examples of how crew safety has evolved in the manned space program and how the international partners have addressed various scenarios involving control and mitigation of potential hazards to crew and vehicle safety.

Abstract
In neonatal animals, feeding stimulates skeletal muscle protein synthesis, a response that declines with development. Both the magnitude of the feeding response and its developmental decline can be reproduced by insulin infusion, suggesting that an altered responsiveness to insulin is a primary determinant of the developmental decline in the stimulation of protein synthesis by feeding. In this study, 7- and 26-day-old pigs were either fasted overnight or fed porcine milk after an overnight fast. We examined the abundance and degree of tyrosine phosphorylation of the insulin receptor (IR), insulin receptor substrate-1 (IRS-1), and IRS-2 in skeletal muscle and, for comparison, liver. We also evaluated the association of IRS-1 and IRS-2 with phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI 3-kinase). The abundance of IR protein in muscle was twofold higher at 7 than at 26 days, but IRS-1 and IRS-2 abundances were similar in muscle of 7- and 26-day-old pigs. The feeding-induced phosphorylations were greater at 7 than at 26 days of age for IR (28- vs. 13-fold), IRS-1 (14- vs. 8-fold), and IRS-2 (21- vs. 12-fold) in muscle. The associations of IRS-1 and IRS-2 with PI 3-kinase were also increased by refeeding to a greater extent at 7 than at 26 days (9- vs. 5-fold and 6- vs. 4-fold, respectively). In liver, the abundance of IR, IRS-1, and IRS-2 was similar at 7 and 26 days of age. Feeding increased the activation of IR, IRS-1, IRS-2, and PI 3-kinase in liver only twofold, and these responses were unaffected by age. Thus our findings demonstrate that the feeding-induced activation of IR, IRS-1, IRS-2, and PI 3-kinase in skeletal muscle decreases with development. Further study is needed to ascertain whether the developmental decline in the feeding-induced activation of early insulin-signaling components contributes to the developmental decline in translation initiation in skeletal muscle.

Abstract
The lager brewing yeasts, Saccharomyces pastorianus (synonym Saccharomyces carlsbergensis), are allopolyploid, containing parts of two divergent genomes. Saccharomyces cerevisiae contributed to the formation of these hybrids, although the identity of the other species is still unclear. The presence of alleles specific to S. cerevisiae and S. pastorianus was tested for by PCR/RFLP in brewing yeasts of various origins and in members of the Saccharomyces sensu stricto complex. S. cerevisiae-type alleles of two genes, HIS4 and YCL008c, were identified in another brewing yeast, S. pastorianus CBS 1503 (Saccharomyces monacensis), thought to be the source of the other contributor to the lager hybrid. This is consistent with the hybridization of S. cerevisiae subtelomeric sequences X and Y' to the electrophoretic karyotype of this strain. S. pastorianus CBS 1503 (S. monacensis) is therefore probably not an ancestor of S. pastorianus, but a related hybrid. Saccharomyces bayanus, also thought to be one of the contributors to the lager yeast hybrid, is a heterogeneous taxon containing at least two subgroups, one close to the type strain, CBS 380T, the other close to CBS 395 (Saccharomyces uvarum). The partial sequences of several genes (HIS4, MET10, URA3) were shown to be identical or very similar (over 99%) in S. pastorianus CBS 1513 (S. carlsbergensis), S. bayanus CBS 380T and its close derivatives, showing that S. pastorianus and S. bayanus have a common ancestor. A distinction between two subgroups within S. bayanus was made on the basis of sequence analysis: the subgroup represented by S. bayanus CBS 395 (S. uvarum) has 6-8% sequence divergence within the genes HIS4, MET10 and MET2 from S. bayanus CBS 380T, indicating that the two S. bayanus subgroups diverged recently. The detection of specific alleles by PCR/RFLP and hybridization with S. cerevisiae subtelomeric sequences X and Y' to electrophoretic karyotypes of brewing yeasts and related species confirmed our findings and revealed substantial heterogeneity in the genome constitution of Czech brewing yeasts used in production.

Abstract
Aquaporins (AQPs) are channel proteins that regulate the movement of water through the plasma membrane of secretory and absorptive cells in response to osmotic gradients. In the salivary gland, AQP5 is the major aquaporin expressed on the apical membrane of acinar cells. Previous studies have shown that the volume of saliva secreted by AQP5-deficient mice is decreased, indicating a role for AQP5 in saliva secretion; however, the mechanism by which AQP5 regulates water transport in salivary acinar cells remains to be determined. Here we show that the decreased salivary flow rate and increased tonicity of the saliva secreted by Aqp5(-)/- mice in response to pilocarpine stimulation are not caused by changes in whole body fluid homeostasis, indicated by similar blood gas and electrolyte concentrations in urine and blood in wild-type and AQP5-deficient mice. In contrast, the water permeability in parotid and sublingual acinar cells isolated from Aqp5(-)/- mice is decreased significantly. Water permeability decreased by 65% in parotid and 77% in sublingual acinar cells from Aqp5(-)/- mice in response to hypertonicity-induced cell shrinkage and hypotonicity-induced cell swelling. These data show that AQP5 is the major pathway for regulating the water permeability in acinar cells, a critical property of the plasma membrane which determines the flow rate and ionic composition of secreted saliva.

Abstract
Twenty-one Saccharomyces strains isolated from a cider process were analysed in terms of karyotypes, Y' S. cerevisiae sequence occurrence, rDNA structure and cross-fertility with species tester strains. A strong predominance of S. bayanus var. uvarum G. Naumov was found (18 strains vs. three S. cerevisiae). Among the S. bayanus var. uvarum, only three strains proved to contain species-specific Y' S. cerevisiae sequences.

Abstract
We recently demonstrated in neonatal pigs that, with amino acids and glucose maintained at fasting levels, the stimulation of protein synthesis in longissimus dorsi muscle with feeding can be reproduced by a physiological rise in insulin alone. In the current report, we determine whether the response of protein synthesis to insulin in the neonatal pig is 1) present in muscles of different fiber types, 2) proportional in myofibrillar and sarcoplasmic proteins, 3) associated with increased translational efficiency and ribosome number, and 4) present in other peripheral tissues and in viscera. Hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic-amino acid clamps were performed in 7- and 26-day-old pigs infused with 0, 30, 100, or 1,000 ng. kg(-0.66). min(-1) of insulin to reproduce insulin levels present in fasted, fed, refed, and supraphysiological conditions, respectively. Tissue protein synthesis was measured using a flooding dose of L-[4-(3)H]phenylalanine. Insulin increased protein synthesis in gastrocnemius muscle and, to a lesser degree, masseter muscle. The degree of stimulation of protein synthesis by insulin was similar in myofibrillar and sarcoplasmic proteins. Insulin increased translational efficiency but had no effect on ribosome number in muscle. All of these insulin-induced changes in muscle protein synthesis decreased with age. Insulin also stimulated protein synthesis in cardiac muscle and skin but not in liver, intestine, spleen, pancreas, or kidney. The results support the hypothesis that insulin mediates the feeding-induced stimulation of myofibrillar and sarcoplasmic protein synthesis in muscles of different fiber types in the neonate by increasing the efficiency of translation. However, insulin does not appear to be involved in the feeding-induced stimulation of protein synthesis in visceral tissues. Thus different mechanisms regulate the growth of peripheral and visceral tissues in the neonate.

Abstract
Chronic beta(1)-adrenergic receptor activation results in hypertrophy and hyperplasia of rodent salivary gland acinar cells. Na(+)/H(+) exchanger isoform 1 (NHE1) regulates cell volume and the induction of cell proliferation in many tissues. To investigate the relationship between NHE1 and the response of parotid glands to beta(1)-adrenergic agonists, we examined by Northern blot analysis NHE1 expression in saline-treated mice and mice 30 min and 2, 6, and 24 h after isoproterenol injection. NHE1 transcripts increased approximately 50% by 2 h, and a more than twofold increase was noted at 24 h. Isoproterenol did not acutely increase Na(+)/H(+) exchanger activity; however, exchanger activity was significantly elevated by 24 h. To test whether NHE1 activity is essential for inducing salivary gland hypertrophy in vivo, mice with targeted disruption of Nhe1 were treated with isoproterenol. Na(+)/H(+) exchanger activity was absent in acinar cells from Nhe1(-/-) mice, nevertheless, the lack of NHE1 failed to inhibit isoproterenol-induced hypertrophy. These data directly demonstrate that acinar cell hypertrophy induced by chronic beta(1)-adrenergic receptor stimulation occurs independently of NHE1 activity.

Abstract
Since Saccharomyces cerevisiae appears to be an emerging pathogen, there is a need for a valuable molecular marker able to distinguish among strains. In this work, we investigated the potential value of microsatellite length polymorphism with a panel of 91 isolates, including 41 clinical isolates, 14 laboratory strains, and 28 strains with industrial relevance. Testing seven polymorphic regions (five trinucleotide repeats and two dinucleotide repeats) in a subgroup of 58 unrelated strains identified a total of 69 alleles (6 to 13 per locus) giving 52 different patterns with a discriminatory power of 99.03%. We found a cluster of clinical isolates sharing their genotype with a bakery strain, suggesting a digestive colonization following ingestion of this strain with diet. With the exception of this cluster of isolates and isolates collected from the same patient or from patients treated with Saccharomyces boulardii, all clinical isolates gave different and unique patterns. The genotypes are stable, and the method is reproducible. The possibility to make the method portable is of great interest for further studies using this technique. This work shows the possibility to readily identify S. boulardii (a strain increasingly isolated from invasive infections) using a unique and specific microsatellite allele.

Abstract
Fractures of the calcaneus (os calcis) are the most common of tarsal bone fractures, with an overall prevalence of approximately 2%. Despite increased experience with these types of fractures, however, there is considerable debate regarding their treatment and overall management. Controversies remain regarding the most appropriate classification system, treatment options, indications for surgery, surgical approaches, and post-operative management. This article presents a rational approach to the treatment of os calcis fractures based on current and past literature and the authors' preferred methods of treatment.

Abstract
Thousands of genetically modified mice have been developed since the first reports of stable expression of recombinant DNA in this species nearly 20 years ago. This mammalian model system has revolutionized the study of whole-animal, organ, and cell physiology. Transgenic and gene-targeted mice have been widely used to characterize salivary-gland-specific expression and to identify genes associated with tumorigenesis. Moreover, several of these mouse lines have proved to be useful models of salivary gland disease related to impaired immunology, i.e., Sjögren's syndrome, and disease states associated with pathogens. Despite the availability of genetically modified mice, few investigators have taken advantage of this resource to better their understanding of salivary gland function as it relates to the production of saliva. In this article, we describe the methods used to generate transgenic and gene-targeted mice and provide an overview of the advantages of and potential difficulties with these models. Finally, using these mouse models, we discuss the advances made in our understanding of the salivary gland secretion process.

Abstract
PCR/RFLP of the NTS2 (IGS2) of rDNA was applied to differentiate two closely related yeast species, Kluyveromyces lactis var. lactis (referred to as K. lactis) and K. marxianus. Using specific primers, the NTS2 region was amplified from DNA of both K. lactis and K. marxianus type and collection strains. AluI restriction of amplified fragments generated patterns characteristic for each species. The NTS2 region from K. lactis var. drosophilarum and related species K. aestuarii, K. africanus, K. dobzhanskii, and K. wickerhamii could also be amplified with the same primers, but AluI patterns generated were clearly different. PCR/RFLP of the NTS2 appears thus to be a convenient method for rapid identification of K. lactis and K. marxianus, frequently found in dairy products. This test was validated therefore on K. lactis and K. marxianus from natural habitats. We showed that all yeast strains collected from whey samples and scoring blue on X-gal glucose plates were either K. lactis or K. marxianus. For application purposes, we propose here an approach for quickly screening for K. lactis/marxianus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae in dairy products using X-gal coloured and lysine growth media.

Abstract
The rapid gain in skeletal muscle mass in the neonate is associated with a marked elevation in skeletal muscle protein synthesis in response to feeding. The feeding-induced response decreases with development. To determine whether the response to feeding is regulated at the level of translation initiation, the expression, phosphorylation, and function of a number of eukaryotic initiation factors (eIF) were examined. Pigs at 7 and 26 days of age were either fasted overnight or fed porcine milk after an overnight fast. In muscle of 7-day-old pigs, the hyperphosphorylated form of the eIF4E repressor protein, 4E-binding protein 1 (4E-BP1), was undetectable in the fasting state but rose to 60% of total 4E-BP1 after feeding; eIF4E phosphorylation was unaffected by feeding status. The amount of eIF4E in the inactive 4E-BP1. eIF4E complex was reduced by 80%, and the amount of eIF4E in the active eIF4E. eIF4G complex was increased 14-fold in muscle of 7-day-old pigs after feeding. The amount of 70-kDa ribosomal protein S6 (p70(S6)) kinase in the hyperphosphorylated form rose 2.5-fold in muscle of 7-day-old pigs after feeding. Each of these feeding-induced responses was blunted in muscle of 26-day-old pigs. eIF2B activity in muscle was unaffected by feeding status but decreased with development. Feeding produced similar changes in eIF characteristics in liver and muscle; however, the developmental changes in liver were not as apparent as in skeletal muscle. Thus the results demonstrate that the developmental change in the acute stimulation of skeletal muscle protein synthesis by feeding is regulated by the availability of eIF4E for 48S ribosomal complex formation. The results further suggest that the overall developmental decline in skeletal muscle protein synthesis involves regulation by eIF2B.
