Abstract
A rapid decline of Abies koreana has been reported in most of the natural alpine habitats in Korea. It is generally accepted that this phenomenon is due to climate change even though no clear conclusions have been drawn. Most research has focused on abiotic environmental factors, but studies on the relationships between A. koreana and soil fungal microbiomes are scarce. In this study, the rhizoplane and rhizosphere fungal communities in the alive and dead Korean fir trees from its three major natural habitats including Mt. Deogyu, Mt. Halla, and Mt. Jiri in Korea were investigated to identify specific soil fungal groups closely associated with A. koreana. Soil fungal diversity in each study site was significantly different from another based on the beta diversity calculations. Heat tree analysis at the genus level showed that Clavulina, Beauveria, and Tomentella were most abundant in the healthy trees probably by forming ectomycorrhizae with Korean fir growth and controlling pests and diseases. However, Calocera, Dacrymyces, Gyoerffyella, Hydnotrya, Microdochium, Hyaloscypha, Mycosymbioces, and Podospora were abundant in the dead trees. Our findings suggested that Clavulina, Beauveria, and Tomentella are the major players that could be considered in future reforestation programs to establish ectomycorrhizal networks and promote growth. These genera may have played a significant role in the survival and growth of A. koreana in its natural habitats. In particular, the genus Gyoerffyella may account for the death of the seedlings. Our work presented exploratory research on the specific fungal taxa associated with the status of A. koreana.

Abstract
The fungal distribution, diversity, and load were analyzed in the geographically segregated island groundwater systems in Korea. A total of 79 fungal isolates were secured from seven islands and identified based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences. They belonged to three phyla (Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and Chlorophyta), five classes, sixteen orders, twenty-two families, and thirty-one genera. The dominant phylum was Ascomycota (91.1%), with most fungi belonging to the Cladosporium (21.5%), Aspergillus (15.2%), and Stachybotrys (8.9%) genera. Cladosporium showed higher dominance and diversity, being widely distributed throughout the geographically segregated groundwater systems. Based on the diversity indices, the genera richness (4.821) and diversity (2.550) were the highest in the groundwater system of the largest scale. As turbidity (0.064-0.462) increased, the overall fungal count increased and the residual chlorine (0.089-0.308) had low relevance compared with the total count and fungal diversity. Cladosporium showed normal mycelial growth in de-chlorinated sterilized samples. Overall, if turbidity increases under higher fungal diversity, bio-deterioration in groundwater-supplying facilities and public health problems could be intensified, regardless of chlorine treatment. In addition to fungal indicators and analyzing methods, physical hydrostatic treatment is necessary for monitoring and controlling fungal contamination.

Abstract
Objective To compare the predicted and actual maximal heart rate (HRmax) values in the cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET). Methods We retrospectively investigated 1,060 patients who underwent a CPET between January 2016 and April 2020 at our institution’s cardiopulmonary rehabilitation center. The following patients were included: those aged >20 years, those tested with a treadmill, and those who underwent symptom-limited maximum exercise testing— reaching ≥85% of the predicted HRmax (62% if taking beta-blockers) and highest respiratory exchange ratio ≥1.1. Ultimately, 827 patients were included in this study. Data on diagnosis, history of taking beta-blockers, age, body mass index (BMI), and CPET parameters were collected. Subgroup analysis was performed according to age, betablockers, BMI (low <18.5 kg/m2, normal, and high ≥25 kg/m2), and risk classification. Results There was a significant difference between the actual HRmax and the predicted value (p<0.001). Betablocker administration resulted in a significant difference in the actual HRmax (p<0.001). There were significant differences in the moderate-to-high-risk and low-risk groups and the normal BMI and high BMI groups (p<0.001). There was no significant difference between the elderly and younger groups. We suggest new formulae for HRmax of cardiopulmonary patients: estimated HRmax=183-0.76×age (the beta-blocker group) and etimated HRmax=210-0.91×age (the non-beta-blocker group). Conclusion Age-predicted HRmax was significantly different from the actual HRmax of patients with cardiopulmonary disease, especially in the beta-blocker group. For participants with high BMI and moderate-tosevere risk, the actual HRmax was significantly lower than the predicted HRmax.

Abstract
Acoustic trauma induces an inflammatory response in the cochlea, resulting in debilitating hearing function. Clinically, amelioration of inflammation substantially prevents noise-induced hearing loss. The Limulus factor C, Cochlin, and Lgl1 (LCCL) peptide plays an important role in innate immunity during bacteria-induced inflammation in the cochlea. We aimed to investigate the LCCL-induced innate immune response to noise exposure and its impact on hearing function. METHODS We used Coch (encodes cochlin harboring LCCL peptide) knock-out and p.G88E knock-in mice to compare the immune responses before and after noise exposure. We explored their hearing function and hair cell degeneration. Moreover, we investigated distinct characteristics of immune responses upon noise exposure using flow cytometry and RNA sequencing. RESULTS One day after noise exposure, the LCCL peptide cleaved from cochlin increased over time in the perilymph space. Both Coch-/- and CochG88E/G88E mutant mice revealed more preserved hearing following acoustic trauma compared to wild-type mice. The outer hair cells were more preserved in Coch-/- than in wild-type mice upon noise exposure. The RNA sequencing data demonstrated significantly upregulated cell migration gene ontology in wild-type mice than in Coch-/- mice following noise exposure, indicating that the infiltration of immune cells was dependent on cochlin. Notably, infiltrated monocytes from blood (C11b+/Ly6G-/Ly6C+) were remarkably higher in wild-type mice than in Coch-/- mice at 1 day after noise exposure. CONCLUSIONS Noise-induced hearing loss was attributed to over-stimulated cochlin, and led to the cleavage and secretion of LCCL peptide in the cochlea. The LCCL peptide recruited more monocytes from the blood vessels upon noise stimulation, thus highlighting a novel therapeutic target for noise-induced hearing loss.

Abstract
This study aimed to understand whether the geo-ecological segregation of native plant species affects the root-associated fungal community. Rhizoplane (RP) and rhizosphere (RS) fungal microbiota of Sedum takesimense native to three geographically segregated coastal regions (volcanic ocean islands) were analyzed using culture-independent methods: 568,507 quality sequences, 1399 operational taxonomic units, five phyla, and 181 genera were obtained. Across all regions, significant differences in the phyla distribution and ratio were confirmed. The Chao's richness value was greater for RS than for RP, and this variance coincided with the number of genera. In contrast, the dominance of specific genera in the RS (Simpson value) was lower than the RP at all sites. The taxonomic identity of most fungal species (95%) closely interacting with the common host plant was different. Meanwhile, a considerable number of RP only residing fungal genera were thought to have close interdependency on their host halophyte. Among these, Metarhizium was the sole genus common to all sites. These suggest that the relationship between potential symbiotic fungi and their host halophyte species evolved with a regional dependency, in the same halophyte species, and of the same natural habitat (volcanic islands); further, the fungal community differenced in distinct geographical regions. Importantly, geographical segregation should be accounted for in national culture collections, based on taxonomical uniqueness.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effect of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) on inflammatory factors in human placental trophoblast (HTR-8/Svneo) cells. Methods: HTR-8/Svneo cells were exposed to different concentrations of PFOS (0, 0.01, 0.1, 1.0 mg/L) for 24 h, and the cell survival rates were measured by CCK8. Secretion levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) , tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) were detected by ELISA. The mRNA expressions of IL-6, TNF-α and IL-10 were detected by fluorescence quantitative PCR. One-way ANOVA was used to analyse the expressions of inflammatory factors. Results: Compared with the control group, the survival rates of 0.1 and 1.0 mg/L PFOS groups were significantly decreased (P<0.05) . Compared with the control group, the secretion levels of IL-6 were decreased in the 0.01, 0.1 and 1.0 mg/L PFOS groups (P<0.05) , the concentrations of TNF-α were increased in the 0.01 and 1.0 mg/L PFOS groups (P<0.05) , and the concentrations of IL-10 were increased in the 0.1 and 1.0 mg/L PFOS groups (P<0.05) . Compared with the control group, the expressions of IL-6 mRNA were increased in the 0.1 and 1.0 mg/L PFOS groups (P<0.05) , and the expressions of IL-10 mRNA were decreased in the 0.01 mg/L, 0.1 mg/L and 1.0 mg/L PFOS groups (P<0.05) . Conclusion: PFOS can induce changes in the secretion levels of inflammatory cytokines in HTR-8/Svneo cells, resulting in decreased activity of placental trophoblast cells and abnomal placental function.

Abstract
Here, we investigated fungal microbiota in the understory root layer of representative well-conserved geographically segregated natural wetlands in the Korean Peninsula. We obtained 574,143 quality fungal sequences in total from soil samples in three wetlands, which were classified into 563 operational taxonomic units (OTU), 5 phyla, 84 genera. Soil texture, total nitrogen, organic carbon, pH, and electrical conductivity of soil were variable between geographical sites. We found significant differences in fungal phyla distribution and ratio, as well as genera variation and richness between the wetlands. Diversity was greater in the Jangdo islands wetland than in the other sites (Chao richness/Shannon/Simpson's for wetland of the Jangdo islands: 283/6.45/0.97 > wetland of the Mt. Gariwang primeval forest: 169/1.17/0.22 > wetland of the Hanbando geology: 145/4.85/0.91), and this variance corresponded to the confirmed number of fungal genera or OTUs (wetlands of Jangdo islands: 42/283 > of Mt. Gariwang primeval forest: 32/169 > of the Hanbando geology: 25/145). To assess the uniqueness of the understory root layer fungus taxa, we analyzed fungal genera distribution. We found that the percentage of fungal genera common to two or three wetland sites was relatively low at 32.3%, while fungal genera unique to each wetland site was 67.7% of the total number of identified fungal species. The Jangdo island wetland had higher fungal diversity than did the other sites and showed the highest level of uniqueness among fungal genera (Is. Jangdo wetland: 34.5% > wetland of Mt. Gariwang primeval forest: 28.6% > wetland of the Hanbando geology: 16.7%).

Abstract
Metagenome studies have provided us with insights into the complex interactions of microorganisms with their environments and hosts. Few studies have focused on microalgae-associated metagenomes, and no study has addressed aquatic microalgae and their bacterial communities in open pond raceways (OPRs). This study explored the possibility of using microalgal biomasses from OPRs for biodiesel and biofertilizer production. The fatty acid profiles of the biomasses and the physical and chemical properties of derived fuels were evaluated. In addition, the phenotype-based environmental adaptation ability of soybean plants was assessed. The growth rate, biomass, and lipid productivity of microalgae were also examined during mass cultivation from April to November 2017. Metagenomics analysis using MiSeq identified ∼127 eukaryotic phylotypes following mass cultivation with (OPR 1) or without (OPR 3) a semitransparent film. Of these, ∼80 phylotypes were found in both OPRs, while 23 and 24 phylotypes were identified in OPRs 1 and 3, respectively. The phylotypes belonged to various genera, such as Desmodesmus, Pseudopediastrum, Tetradesmus, and Chlorella, of which, the dominant microalgal species was Desmodesmus sp. On average, OPRs 1 and 3 produced ∼8.6 and 9.9 g m−2 d−1 (0.307 and 0.309 DW L−1) of total biomass, respectively, of which 14.0 and 13.3 wt% respectively, was lipid content. Fatty acid profiling revealed that total saturated fatty acids (mainly C16:0) of biodiesel obtained from the microalgal biomasses in OPRs 1 and 3 were 34.93% and 32.85%, respectively; total monounsaturated fatty acids (C16:1 and C18:1) were 32.40% and 31.64%, respectively; and polyunsaturated fatty acids (including C18:3) were 32.68% and 35.50%, respectively. Fuel properties determined by empirical equations were within the limits of biodiesel standards ASTM D6751 and EN 14214. Culture solutions with or without microalgal biomasses enhanced the environmental adaptation ability of soybean plants, increasing their seed production. Therefore, microalgal biomass produced through mass cultivation is excellent feedstock for producing high-quality biodiesel and biofertilizer.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to establish a complementary direction of the franchise food hygiene guideline to control microbial risks. We evaluated current measures of preventing microbial spoilage and ensuring microbiological safety of food in the food franchise industry. Manufacturing practices were assessed using microbiological analyses, third‐party food safety audits, and existing hygiene guidelines. Microbial load indicators of food, manufacturing processes, work environment, and workers were also analyzed to track microbial proliferation. We audited manufacturing practices and processes and analyzed the cleaning and sanitation clauses. We found high contamination of heterotrophic bacteria and detected coliforms in some products. There was no direct contamination by food handlers, and the sterility of raw materials was satisfactory. The main issues were structural complexities of equipment, which hindered cleaning and disinfection, and disinfection practices of franchise brands. Store‐level microbial control may be compromised due to the industrial nature of small stores operating collectively. We thus issued complementary guidelines. Improved collective microbiological safety may be ensured through implementation of the revised cleaning and sterilization regulations.

Abstract
Talaromyces halophytorum sp. nov. was isolated from the roots of halophyte Limonium tetragonum collected from Seocheon-gun, Korea in November 2015. It showed a slow growth on yeast extract sucrose agar at 25 °C, no growth at 4 °C or 37 °C and produced smooth-walled and globose to sub-globose conidia. T. halophytorum is phylogenetically distinct from the other reported Talaromyces species of section Trachyspermi based on multi-locus sequence typing results using partial fragments of β-tubulin, calmodulin, ITS, and RNA polymerase II genes.

Abstract
Lymphedema, a chronic disease that lowers patients’ quality of life, is categorized as primary or secondary. Secondary lymphedema can be improved by treating the underlying cause. However, in many cases, efforts are not made to identify the primary cause of lymphedema and treatment is targeted at the edema itself, resulting in misdiagnosis. Here, we describe the case of a 61-year-old man with right leg edema of unknown cause that had persisted for 3 years. Intestinal tuberculosis was confirmed during a re-evaluation of the cause, and his symptoms improved after anti-tuberculous treatment. This improvement was assessed qualitatively by indocyanine green lymphography before and after treatment, as well as by observation of the clinical symptoms. Lower extremity lymphedema caused by intestinal tuberculosis is extremely rare, and this case reveals the importance of continuing to identify the causes of resistant pathologies.

Abstract
Fungi are one of the most biogeochemically active components of the soil microbiome, becoming particularly important in metal polluted terrestrial environments. There is scant information on the mycobiota of uranium (U) polluted sites and the effect of metallic depleted uranium (DU) stress on fungal communities in soil has not been reported. The present study aimed to establish the effect of DU contamination on a fungal community in soil using a culture-independent approach, fungal ribosomal intergenic spacer analysis (F-RISA). Experimental soil microcosms also included variants with plants (Pinus silvestris) and P. silvestris/Rhizopogon rubescens ectomycorrhizal associations. Soil contamination with DU resulted in the appearance of RISA bands of the ITS fragments of fungal metagenomic DNA that were characteristic of the genus Mortierella (Mortierellomycotina: Mucoromycota) in pine-free microcosms and for ectomycorrhizal fungi of the genus Scleroderma (Basidiomycota) in microcosms with mycorrhizal pines. The precise taxonomic affinity of the ITS fragments from the band appearing for non-mycorrhizal pines combined with DU remained uncertain, the most likely being related to the subphylum Zoopagomycotina. Thus, soil contamination by thermodynamically unstable metallic depleted uranium can cause a significant change in a soil fungal community under experimental conditions. These changes were also strongly affected by the presence of pine seedlings and their mycorrhizal status which impacted on DU biocorrosion and the release of bioavailable uranium species.

Abstract
Objective To investigate difference in bilateral diaphragm movement of patients with tracheal aspiration according to post stroke residue severity and determine correlations of Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS), residue scale, and bilateral diaphragm movement. Methods A total of 47 patients diagnosed with hemiplegic stroke were enrolled in this study. PAS, severity of valleculae, and pyriform sinus retention during videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) were assessed. Bilateral fluoroscopic diaphragm movements during spontaneous breathing and forced breathing were measured. Results Patients with tracheal aspiration (PAS≥6) had significantly (p=0.035) lower ipsilateral diaphragm movement during spontaneous breathing. Post-swallow residue severity showed statistically significant (p=0.028) difference in patients with ipsilateral diaphragm movement during forced breathing. In linear regression analysis, PAS showed weak correlations with ipsilateral spontaneous diaphragm movement (r=0.397, p=0.006), ipsilateral forced diaphragm movement (r=0.384, p=0.008), and contralateral forced diaphragm movement (r=0.323, p=0.027). Weak correlation was also observed between post swallow residue severity and ipsilateral diaphragm movement during spontaneous breathing (r=0.331, p=0.023) and forced breathing (r=0.343, p=0.018). Conclusion We confirmed the relationship between swallowing function and bilateral diaphragm movement in this study. The severity of dysphagia after hemiplegic stroke was correlated with bilateral diaphragm movement. Further longitudinal studies are needed to assess the effect of breathing exercise on post-stroke dysphagia.

Abstract
This review focuses on the state of research on the microbial resources of Dokdo, Korea, as a strategy for securing national microbial resources. In the Korean peninsula, studies aimed at securing microbial resources are carried out across diverse natural environments, especially in the Dokdo islands. Until 2017, a total of 61 novel microbial genera, species, or newly recorded strains have been reported. Among these, 10 new taxa have had their whole genome sequenced and published, in order to find novel useful genes. Additionally, there have been multiple reports of bacteria with novel characteristics, including promoting plant growth or inducing systemic resistance in plants, calcite-forming ability, electrical activation, and production of novel enzymes. Furthermore, fundamental studies on microbial communities help to secure and define microbial resources in the Dokdo islands. This study will propose several tactics, based on ecological principles, for securing more microbial resources to cope with the current increase in international competition for biological resources.

Abstract
Ubiquinol cytochrome c reductase binding protein (UQCRB) is known to play crucial roles in the development of various types of diseases. However, the link between UQCRB and microRNAs remains unknown. In the present study, we performed microRNA sequencing of mutant UQCRB-expressing stable cell lines that exhibited pro-oncogenic activities caused by expression of the mutant UQCRB gene. Results showed that hsa-miR-10a-5p was significantly downregulated in the mutant UQCRB-expressing cell lines. Furthermore, mRNA sequencing and gene ontology analysis of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) revealed that the cholesterol biosynthesis pathway might be activation by mutant UQCRB expression. Moreover, inhibition of cholesterol synthesis in mutant UQCRB-expressing cells via treatment with the specific inhibitors suppressed the cell proliferation. Transfection with a hsa-miR-10a-5p mimic validated that lanosterol synthase (LSS) is a target of hsa-miR-10a-5p. In addition, hsa-miR-10a-5p was found to be downregulated in liver cancer cell lines overexpressing UQCRB. Taken together, our findings highlighted the potential use of hsa-miR-10a-5p as a biomarker for UQCRB related diseases.

Abstract
Objectives The objective of this review is to propose an appropriate course of action for improving the guidelines followed by food handlers for control of infection. For this purpose, previous epidemiological reports related to acute gastroenteritis in food service businesses mediated by food handlers were intensively analyzed. Methods Relevant studies were identified in international databases. We selected eligible papers reporting foodborne infectious disease outbreaks. Among primary literature collection, the abstract of each article was investigated to find cases that absolutely identified a causative factor to be food handlers’ inappropriate infection control and the taxon of causative microbial agents by epidemiological methodologies. Information about the sites (type of food business) where the outbreaks occurred was investigated. Results A wide variety of causative microbial agents has been investigated, using several epidemiological methods. These agents have shown diverse propagation pathways based on their own molecular pathogenesis, physiology, taxonomy, and etiology. Conclusion Depending on etiology, transmission, propagation, and microbiological traits, we can predict the transmission characteristics of pathogens in food preparation areas. The infected food workers have a somewhat different ecological place in infection epidemiology as compared to the general population. However, the current Korean Food Safety Act cannot propose detailed guidelines. Therefore, different methodologies have to be made available to prevent further infections.

Abstract
The red yeasts are currently widely discussed and controversial group of yeasts because of the growing number of reports of their ability to become opportunistic pathogens of plants, animals and humans. The aim of this work was complex identifcation of the red yeast culture isolated from gastrointestinal tract of healthy Hucul long-liver from the Carpathians highland region of Ukraine. Torularhodin was found to be a major component within yeast culture carotenoids complex. According to conventional biochemical and morphological approaches as well as to molecular biological investigation of internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) of ribosomal operon it was concluded that isolate belonged to species Rhodotorula mucilaginosa.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Albuminuria is associated with increased risk of multiple adverse health outcomes, such as progressive renal failure, cardiovascular disease and death. However, in the general population, it is uncertain whether albuminuria is associated with elevated heart rate, which is an independent and powerful risk factor for cardiovascular disease. AIM To investigate whether an elevated heart rate is an independent factor associated with albuminuria in the general adult population of Korea. METHODS A cross-sectional analysis was carried out on 5198 Korean adults aged 19 years or older who participated in the fifth (2011) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V-2). RESULTS The prevalence of albuminuria showed an increasing trend throughout the whole range of heart rate, even after adjusting for confounders (P = 0.002). The increment was most profound at the heart rate of 70-75 and >76 beats per minute (b.p.m.; P = 0.011). In multiple logistic regression analysis, age (P < 0.001), hypertension (P < 0.001), diabetes (P < 0.001), hypertriglyceridaemia (P = 0.025), estimated glomerular filtration rate (P = 0.028) and heart rate (P = 0.023) were independently associated with the presence of albuminuria in Korean adults. Compared with participants with heart rate ≤ 64 b.p.m., the odds ratio (95% CI) for albuminuria was 1.50 (1.15-1.96) for those with heart rate ≥ 76 b.p.m. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of albuminuria is independently associated with heart rate in the general adult population of Korea.

Abstract
A fungal internal transcribed spacer region was used to identify the mycorrhizae of Cymbidium kanran. The family Russulaceae was found to be the most frequently occurring group in both root and soil samples. In phylogenetic analyses, the majority of the Russulaceae clones were clustered with Russula brevipes and R. cyanoxantha. Therefore, C. kanran may form symbiotic relationships with the genus Russula.

Abstract
This review covers recent research and development (R&D) activities in the field of algae-based biofuels in Korea. As South Korea's energy policy paradigm has focused on the development of green energies, the government has funded several algae biofuel R&D consortia and pilot projects. Three major programs have been launched since 2009, and significant efforts are now being made to ensure a sustainable supply of algae-based biofuels. If these R&D projects are executed as planned for the next 10 years, they will enable us to overcome many technical barriers in algae biofuel technologies and help Korea to become one of the leading countries in green energy by 2020.

Abstract
A freshwater microalga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii KNUA021, was characterized for its potential as a biochemical feedstock. Its optimal growth was observed when the culture was incubated at 25°C and pH 9.4. However, the isolate was capable of survival and growth under a variety of temperatures (10-30°C) and pH (pH 4.0-12.0) conditions. The total lipid content of the isolate was 21.7% of dry weight and it was found that a high-value fatty alcohol, hexadecenol (C(20)H(40)O), was autotrophically produced by strain KNUA021. In addition, a nutritionally important C(18:3) ω3 (α-linolenic acid, ALA) was also identified in this photosynthetic microorganism as one of the major fatty acids. Hence, C. reinhardtii KNUA021 appears to show promise for use in the production of microalgae-based biochemicals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitiligo is an acquired pigmentary disorder caused by the destruction of melanocytes. Two of the major theories regarding the pathogenesis of vitiligo are the autoimmune theory and autocytotoxicity theory, but, the precise pathogenetic mechanism is still not clarified. OBJECTIVES We investigated the effects of ET-1, tacrolimus and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) on proliferation and migration of cultured normal human melanocytes (NHMs). We also sought to clarify the theoretical rationale underlying the topical tacrolimus monotherapy or tacrolimus-UV combination therapy as tools for vitiligo treatment. METHODS The effects of ET-1, tacrolimus and TNF-α on proliferation/migration of cultured NHMs were investigated by MTT assay/Boyden chamber transwell migration assay. We also examined roles of CXC-chemokine receptor II (CXCR II) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in such conditions. RESULTS ET-1 exerted a stimulatory effect on melanocyte proliferation and migration, but, tacrolimus exerted a stimulatory effect only on melanocyte migration higher than ET-1. TNF-α inhibited melanocyte proliferation in a dose-dependent manner. Paradoxically, TNF-α-pretreated NHMs exhibited an enhanced proliferative efficiency after being switched to ET-1. We found CXCRII was highly expressed in TNF-α-incubated melanocytes than the agents-free control, and ET-1 treatment after TNF-α preincubation showed the higher levels of CXCRII expression than the condition incubated with TNF-α alone. Moreover, the greater activities of MMP-2 and MMP-9 induced by tacrolimus than ET-1, reflected tacrolimus would enhance migration stimulatory effect in cultured NHMs. CONCLUSIONS Topical tacrolimus can be used an effective agent for vitiligo treatment as monotherapy, maybe due to its migration stimulatory action or TNF-α inhibitory property, and also as a component in combination therapy with UV treatment, considering the more upregulated MMPs activities are induced and the more effective migrations are feasible by itself than ET-1.

Abstract
Administration of recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) in obesity has been known to lead to a decrease in visceral adiposity and an increase in lean body mass. Most studies have used supraphysiological doses of rhGH, which were administered daily or every other day. We aimed to evaluate whether weekly administered low dose of sustained-release rhGH (SR-rhGH) could play a therapeutic role in the treatment of abdominal obesity. Prospective, single-arm, open-label, multicenter pilot study was carried out. Participants were 26 adults aged 40-65 years old with abdominal obesity (male: waist circumference >90 cm, female: waist circumference >85 cm). The subjects were given 3 mg of SR-rhGH, administered subcutaneously, weekly for 26 weeks. SR-rhGH treatment for 26 weeks increased the IGF-1 level by 56.53±76.09 μg/l (SDS 0.77±1.12) compared to the baseline (p=0.0022). After 26 weeks, SR-rhGH treatment reduced abdominal visceral adipose tissue (VAT) (140.35±75.97 to 128.43±73.85 cm2, p=0.0038). Average waist circumference decreased from 96.25±6.41 to 91.93±6.13 cm (p<0.0001) after treatment. However, body weight or lean body mass did not show any significant change. In conclusion, SR-rhGH treatment for 26 weeks reduced abdominal visceral fat and waist circumference without severe adverse events. Further studies may be considered on the role of weekly administered SR-rhGH as a treatment for abdominal obesity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Silastic splints have been used as effective tools for septal support, avoiding adhesion, and mucosal healing after septal surgery. Furthermore, although many surgeons insert septal splints, no well-designed trials exist to support their use. A randomized double-blinded controlled trial was performed. METHODS We recruited 40 subjects who had undergone septoplasty only without sinus surgery or turbinoplasty. A silastic septal splint was inserted in one side of the nasal cavity at the end of each septoplasty, with the other side serving as a control. The splint side and control side were randomly selected. Nasal discomfort score (10-point scale) and mucosal status (grades 1-4) were surveyed in a blinded setting on postoperative days 7 and 14. RESULTS Forty of 83 subjects fulfilled the enrollment criteria. On the 7th postoperative day there was no significant difference in nasal discomfort between the splint and control sides (6.2 ± 1.28 and 5.7 ± 1.27, respectively; p = 0.116), but the mucosal status was better on the splint side than on the control side (1.5 ± 0.51 and 2.5 ± 0.85; p < 0.001). At 14 days postoperatively, the symptom score (2.7 ± 1.06 versus 3.8 ± 1.25; p < 0.001) and mucosal status (1.5 ± 0.55 versus 1.9 ± 0.68; p = 0.013) were significantly better on the splint side compared with the control side. CONCLUSION Insertion of a silastic septal splint after septal surgery should be accepted as a routine procedure.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although photodynamic therapy (PDT) is widely performed for acne, little is known about its exact therapeutic mechanism. OBJECTIVE We aimed to estimate the efficacy and safety of PDT on acne and to discover its mode of action. METHODS We performed PDT on 12 patients with mild to moderate acne. The clinical efficacy was assessed by counting the acne lesions and measuring the sebum secretion before and after PDT. In addition, we took biopsy samples from the peri-lesional areas before and after 3-session of PDT. To examine the degree of apoptosis of the sebaceous follicles, TUNEL assay was performed. To investigate the changes of toll-like receptor (TLR)-2 and TLR-4 expression after PDT, immunohistochemical stainings were also carried out. Finally, we performed TUNEL assay using the cultured sebocytes to confirm the apoptosis of sebocytes in vitro after PDT. RESULTS There was a significant reduction in the number of inflammatory acne lesions after PDT, compared to baseline (p<0.05). Sebum excretion significantly decreased 2 weeks after the first PDT session except for one patient (p<0.05). The TUNEL positive cells in the peri-lesional sebaceous glands after PDT markedly increased, compared with those of before PDT. A decrease in TLR-2 and TLR-4 expression by sebaceous glands and epidermis after PDT was 50% and 30%, respectively. CONCLUSION Our results demonstrate that apoptosis of the sebaceous glands is associated with improvement of acne by PDT. PDT has shown to down-regulate TLR-2 and TLR-4 expression in the sebaceous glands and epidermis of acne patients.

Abstract
Patients with hypopituitarism have the feature of metabolic syndrome, including central obesity, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia. Because metabolic syndrome, including insulin resistance, is the main pathogenesis of the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), we considered that patients diagnosed with hypopituitarism have an increased risk of developing NAFLD. We compared control subjects and hypopituitary men in metabolic parameters and the frequency of fatty liver on abdominal ultrasonography, and analyzed associating factors with the severity of the fatty liver in patients with hypopituitarism. 34 male patients with hypopituitarism and 40 age and sex-matched control subjects were included. The frequency of fatty liver on abdominal ultrasonography was significantly higher in hypopituitary men compared to control subjects (32.5% vs. 70.6%, p=0.001). Ln CRP and free fatty acids were significantly elevated in hypopituitary patients with fatty liver compared to patients without fatty liver. Ln GH was significantly lower in hypopituitary patients with fatty liver. The severity of fatty liver on abdominal ultrasonography correlated with negatively Ln GH, after adjusting for the BMI effect (p=0.020). There is a difference only between the severe fatty liver group and normal liver group in the analysis of the mean Ln GH level between 4 groups according to the severity of fatty liver (p=0.036). In conclusion, NAFLD is more common in hypopituitary patients than control subject. Severe growth hormone deficiency in hypopituitarism was associated with the severe degree of hepatic steatosis in NAFLD.

Abstract
UNLABELLED Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a serious side effect of bisphosphonate therapy. The incidence of BRONJ is known to be low among patients treated with oral bisphosphonates. We investigated the prevalence, demographics, clinical manifestations, and treatment outcome of 24 patients with oral BRONJ in Asian populations. INTRODUCTION The long-term safety of oral bisphosphonates is clinically important considering the rare but potentially serious complications such as bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) versus the effect of reducing and preventing osteoporotic fracture. The incidence of BRONJ is known to be low among patients treated with oral bisphosphonates around the world. However, the prevalence in those taking oral bisphosphonates for osteoporosis in Asian populations is unknown. Moreover, a recent article, showing that the majority of reported patients who received alendronate were Asian American, raised concern about the prevalence of oral BRONJ in Asian populations. The objective of this study was to investigate the estimated prevalence, clinical characteristics, and treatment outcome of oral BRONJ in Asian populations. METHODS From October 2005 to December 2008, a retrospective review of medical charts identified 24 patients receiving oral bisphosphonates diagnosed as BRONJ at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Yonsei University Dental Hospital, Seoul, South Korea. RESULTS The estimated prevalence of oral BRONJ was 0.05-0.07%. The average oral bisphosphonate treatment duration was 43.1 months (range, 5-120 months). Treatment with oral antibiotics and/or surgery including sequestrectomy or alveolectomy showed relatively favorable results. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of oral BRONJ in Korea is similar to that reported previously in Western populations. We suggest that recognition of BRONJ and appropriate management pre- and post-dental surgery might reduce the frequency of BRONJ among patients receiving oral bisphosphonates.

Abstract
Strontium stannate is under study as an ultra-stable dielectric material for microelectronic applications at low temperatures. It is known to have a remarkably temperature-independent dielectric constant from 27 K to room temperature. However, we report anomalies in the Raman spectra, dielectric response, and differential thermal analysis of strontium stannate compatible with a structural phase transition at 160 K. Further anomalies are seen in calorimetric and Raman data (but not dielectric data) that suggest another phase transition at 270 K. A preliminary x-ray powder diffraction study confirms a small change in the pseudo-cubic lattice constant a(T) at the lower transition.

Abstract
A detection method using a self-sensing cantilever is more desirable than other detection methods (optical fiber and laser beam bounce detection) that are bulky and require alignment. The advantage of the self-sensing cantilever is its simplicity, particularly its simple structure. It can be used for the construction of an atomic force microscopy system with a vacuum, fluids, and a low temperature chamber. Additionally, the self-actuating cantilever can be used for a high speed scanning system because the bandwidth is larger than the bulk scanner. Frequently, ZnO film has been used as an actuator in a self-actuating cantilever. In this paper, we studied the characteristics of the self-sensing and self-actuating cantilever with an integrated Wheatstone bridge circuit substituting the ZnO film with a lead zirconate titanate (PZT) film as the actuator. We can reduce the leakage current (to less than 10(-4) A/cm(2)) in the PZT cantilever and improve sensor sensitivity through a reduction of noise level from the external sensor circuit using the Wheatstone bridge circuit embedded into the cantilever. The self-sensing and actuating cantilever with an integrated Wheatstone bridge circuit was compared with a commercial self-sensing cantilever or self-sensing and actuating cantilever without an integrated Wheatstone bridge circuit. The measurement results have shown that sensing the signal to noise level and the minimum detectable deflection improved to 4.78 mV and 1.18 nm, respectively. We believe that this cantilever allows for easier system integration and miniaturization, provides better controllability and higher scan speeds, and offers the potential for full automation.

Abstract
Cetuximab (Erbitux) has been highlighted for its anti-proliferative effects in solid tumors and it is currently used as an adjuvant modality with other anti-cancer treatments. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is used widely in many specialties of medicine. This study evaluated the efficacy of a combination treatment of two modalities (Cetuximab, PDT) both in vivo and in vitro. The SNU-1041 cell line was used for both the in vitro and in vivo studies. The in vivo and in vitro experiments were each classified into four groups, control group, Cetuximab applied group, PDT applied group and combined modality group. A migration study was performed to determine the anti-migration effect of Cetuximab, and a MTT assay was performed to compare the anti-proliferative effect of the modalities in vitro. For the in vivo study, the cells were implanted into 5-week-old nude mice. The measured volume of the tumor for each group was compared as a function of time. In the migration study, the control group showed a longer migration length than the Cetuximab applied group. In the MTT assay, the combination modality group showed less survival than the uni-modality groups. The measured tumor size after treatment showed that the combination treatment was more effective than the single modalities. PDT and Cetuximab are treatment modalities that target different molecular pathways. A combination of these two treatment modalities was found to more effective than an individual treatment. However, further studies will be needed to determine the optimal dose of the photosensitizer and Cetuximab.

Abstract
CONCLUSION Patients with epiglottic abscesses showed more severe symptoms than those with acute epiglottitis and were at increased risk of airway compromise. All 11 patients with epiglottic abscesses underwent spinal needle aspiration; all were cured without severe complications. These findings indicate that spinal needle aspiration is both safe and effective in patients with epiglottic abscesses. OBJECTIVES Acute epiglottitis is a disease that may become serious or even fatal because of sudden upper airway obstruction. An epiglottic abscess may result from a coalescent epiglottic infection due to acute epiglottitis or secondary infection of an epiglottic mucocele. There have been few reports comparing acute epiglottitis with epiglottic abscess. We therefore assessed the clinical characteristics of each condition, as well as the efficacy of spinal needle aspiration and drainage of epiglottic abscesses. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the records of 90 hospitalized patients diagnosed with acute epiglottitis and epiglottic abscess by flexible nasopharyngolaryngoscopy between March 2006 and February 2008. All patients were treated with medication; in addition, those with epiglottic abscess underwent spinal needle aspiration. RESULTS Of 90 patients, 79 had acute epiglottitis and 11 had epiglottic abscesses. Acute epiglottitis was most common in May (16.5%) and epiglottic abscesses were most common in June (27.3%). The most common symptoms were sore throat (91.1%), dysphagia (38.9%), voice change (33.3%), and dyspnea (16.7%). All patients were treated with antibiotics and steroids. The mean length of hospitalization was 5 days. No patient required a tracheostomy or orotracheal intubation.

Abstract
A phenol-degrading fungus, Fusarium oxysporum GJ4, was isolated from contaminated soil and was able to use phenol as a sole carbon and energy source. Catechol was detected during phenol degradation and this was polymerized by Cu(2)O added to the medium. F. oxysporum GJ4 was unable to degrade phenol at concentrations greater than 2mM when Cu(2)O was present in the liquid growth medium. Catechol polymerization and deposition on the fungal surface was thought to be the main reason for the cessation of phenol degradation by F. oxysporum GJ4. Such catalytic polymerization of catecholic products by Cu(2)O during the biodegradation of phenol or other phenolic products must be considered as a possible interference factor in bioremediation.

Abstract
This report describes an automated coupled column microbore-high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detection for direct determination of verapamil in small volume of rat plasma. We used HPLC system consisting of three columns such as precolumn, intermediate and analytical column and six-port switching valve and injected small volume of rat plasma to the system without sample preparation. An aliquot of sample was directly injected into Capcell Pak MF Ph precolumn for clean-up and enrichment, 35 mm Capcell Pak C18, intermediate column for concentration of compounds and 250 mm Capcell Pak C18 analytical column for separation of compounds and two mobile phases are used as mobile phase A (50mM ammonium phosphate, pH 4.5) and B (50mM ammonium phosphate:acetonitrile=70:30 v/v). Analysis of verapamil and internal standard, propranolol was performed with direct injection of 10 microl of rat plasma to the system and were eluted at 22 and 12 min, respectively, at a mobile phase flow rate of 0.5 (mobile phase A) and 0.15 ml/min (mobile phase B). The peaks of verapamil and internal standard were good shapes and well separated from any interfering endogenous peaks during a total run time of 25 min. The calibration curve for verapamil showed good linearity (r(2)=0.9997) over the concentration range of 0.01-2.50 microg/ml. The mean RSD (%) values of intra-day (n=5) and inter-day (n=5) variability of verapamil ranged from 1.96 to 9.06 and 0.62 to 3.08%, respectively. The LOD and LOQ were 0.01 and 0.025 microg/ml, respectively, for verapamil using 10 microl of rat plasma. An automated coupled column microbore-HPLC method was successfully applied to a pharmacokinetic study after intravenous injection of 3mg/kg of verapamil to the normal and dimethylnitrosamine (DMN)-induced hepatofibrotic rats.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the effect of interleukin (IL)-1alpha and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha on cytokine, chemokine, and receptor expression in corneal stromal cells; the effect of corneal scrape injury on monocyte chemotactic and activating factor (MCAF) expression and monocyte-macrophage influx into the stroma; and the effect of MCAF and granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) microinjection on inflammatory cell infiltration into the stroma. METHODS Gene array technology was used to evaluate changes in cytokine, chemokine, and receptor gene expression in stromal fibroblasts in response to IL-1alpha and TNFalpha. Expression of MCAF mRNA and protein was monitored with an RNase protection assay and Western blot analysis, respectively. Keratocyte MCAF protein expression in the rabbit cornea was detected with immunocytochemistry. After epithelial scrape injury, monocytes-macrophages were detected in rabbit corneas, by immunocytochemistry for monocyte-macrophage antigen. Inflammatory cell infiltration after MCAF and G-CSF microinjection into the stroma of mouse corneas was monitored with hematoxylin and eosin staining. RESULTS IL-1alpha or TNFalpha upregulated the expression of several proinflammatory chemokines in stromal fibroblasts in culture. These included G-CSF, MCAF, neutrophil-activating peptide (ENA-78), and monocyte-derived neutrophil chemotactic factor (MDNCF). MCAF mRNA upregulation was confirmed by RNase protection assay, and MCAF protein was detected by Western blot analysis. MCAF protein was detected in keratocytes at 4 hours and 24 hours after epithelial injury, but not in keratocytes in the unwounded cornea. Corneal epithelial injury triggered the influx of monocytes-macrophages into the corneal stroma in the rabbit. Microinjection of MCAF and G-CSF into mouse cornea resulted in the influx of monocytes-macrophages and granulocytes, respectively, into the stroma. CONCLUSIONS Proinflammatory chemokine induction in keratocytes is mediated by IL-1alpha and TNFalpha. The proinflammatory chemokines produced by the keratocytes probably trigger the influx of inflammatory cells into the stroma after epithelial injury associated with corneal surgery, contact lenses, or trauma.

Abstract
A polymer (PDMS: poly(dimethylsiloxane)) microchip for capillary gel electrophoresis that can separate different sizes of DNA molecules in a small experimental scale is presented. This microchip can be easily produced by a simple PDMS molding method against a microfabricated master without the use of elaborate bonding processes. This PDMS microchip could be used as a single use device unlike conventional microchips made of glass, quartz or silicon. The capillary channel on the chip was partially filled with agarose gel that can enhance separation resolution of different sizes of DNA molecules and can shorten the channel length required for the separation of the sample compared to capillary electrophoresis in free-flow or polymer solution format. We discuss the optimal conditions for the gel preparation that could be used in the microchannel. DNA molecules were successfully driven by an electric field and separated to form bands in the range of 100 bp to 1 kbp in a 2.0% agarose-filled microchannel with 8 mm of effective separation length.

Abstract
PURPOSE To identify and differentiate cell cycle and differentiation genes that are up-regulated or down-regulated in human corneal epithelial cells in response to alternative epithelium-modulating cytokines epidermal growth factor (EGF), hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) or keratinocyte growth factor (KGF). METHODS Primary cultures human corneal epithelial cell (HCE) were treated with 25 ng/ml of EGF, 25 ng/ml HGF, 25 ng/ml KGF, or vehicle for 8 hours. Complementary DNA (cDNA) probes were synthesized from total cellular RNA isolated from the HCE cells. The cDNA probes were hybridized to the Atlas human cell cycle/differentiation array membrane. RNAse protection assay was used to confirm up-regulation of the serine/threonine-protein kinase PITALRE gene by EGF, KGF, and HGF. RESULTS The expression of one hundred and eleven cell cycle and differentiation genes was monitored with the gene array system. It was found that these epithelial cell-modulating cytokines shared similar effects on some of the cell cycle and differentiation genes that were monitored, but had specific effects on some cytokines. Up-regulation of PITALRE gene expression was confirmed using RNAse protection assay. CONCLUSION EGF, HGF and KGF had differential effects on cell cycle- and differentiation-related gene expression in corneal epithelial cells. For example, all three mitogenic growth factors up-regulated the expression of cyclin D1 (BCL-1 oncogene) and serine/threonine-protein kinase PITALRE in the primary cultured human corneal epithelial cells. However, EGF and KGF, but not HGF, up-regulated expression of the E2F-1 pRB-binding protein gene. Thus, while these three epithelial mitogens have similar effects on many genes that were analyzed, important differences were noted that may relate to differing effects of these growth factors on corneal epithelial cells. Studies to analyze the significance of the identified differences among these growth factors are in progress.

Abstract
Biological diversity in the wound healing response is thought to be a major factor limiting the predictability of the outcome of refractive surgical procedures such as laser in situ keratomileusis and photorefractive keratectomy. Corneal wound healing is critical to the success of topography-linked or wave front-linked excimer laser ablation to optimize visual performance. This is because of the importance of retaining subtle features of custom ablation and the tendency of epithelial hyperplasia and stromal remodeling to obscure these features following either procedure. The corneal wound healing response is exceedingly complex. Keratocyte apoptosis, which occurs in response to epithelial injury, is the earliest observable event in the wound healing cascades and is therefore an excellent target for pharmacological intervention. Alterations of surgical technique can be designed to limit keratocyte apoptosis and the subsequent events in corneal wound healing. Abnormalities of the cascades could contribute to the pathogenesis of corneal diseases. For example, recent data have suggested that perturbation of the keratocyte apoptosis/mitosis balance could underlie the development of keratoconus in a proportion of patients.

Abstract
We report on the development of a hybrid polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-glass microchip for genetic analysis by functional integration of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and capillary gel electrophoresis (CGE), and on related temperature control systems for PCR on a PDMS-glass hybrid microchip. The microchip was produced by molding PDMS against a microfabricated master with comparatively simple and inexpensive methods. PCR was successfully carried out on the PDMS-glass hybrid microchip with 500 bp target of lambdaDNA and the amplified gene was subsequently analyzed by CGE on the same PDMS-glass microchip. The chip could be considered as an inexpensive single-use apparatus compared to glass or silicon-made microchips for the same purpose.

Abstract
To evaluate the etiology of corneal opacities, a study was done on the immunohistochemical staining for heat shock protein (HSP) 72/73 and c-fos after myopic excimer laser photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). New Zealand white rabbits (60 eyes) were divided into four groups: -6-, -9- and -15-dpt operation groups and a control group (only corneal epithelium removed). Using an excimer laser (VisX 20/20, Sunnyvale, Calif., USA), myopic PRK was performed on the rabbit's cornea by a single or multizone technique followed by an immunohistochemical stain to detect the expression of HSP 72/73 and c-fos at 6, 24, 48 h, 1 week and 8 weeks. Corneal epithelia were healed within 3 days in all groups, and 8 weeks after the operation, the mean density of corneal opacity was 0.83 (-6-dpt operation group), 1 (-9-dpt operation group) and 1.67 (-15-dpt operation group). All groups exhibited HSP 73 in corneal epithelium and stroma. However, the maximal expression of c-fos and HSP 72 appeared in corneal epithelium at 24 and 48 h, respectively, after the operation in the -15-dpt group. These results suggest that the expressions of HSP 72 and c-fos in rabbit corneal epithelium are significant factors in relation to corneal opacity after excimer laser PRK.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this article is to review available information regarding development, structure, and function of Bowman's layer in the cornea. Disease-related abnormalities of Bowman's layer are described. A hypothesis is advanced to explain the development and maintenance of Bowman's layer. METHODS Literature review and hypothesis formulation based on previous studies. RESULTS Information is presented that supports the hypothesis that Bowman's layer forms as a result of cytokine-mediated interactions occurring between corneal epithelial cells and keratocytes that include chemotactic and apoptotic effects on the keratocytes. This hypothesis suggests that Bowman's layer results from such interactions beginning in early development and continuing into adulthood in humans and other animals, such as chickens. CONCLUSIONS Bowman's layer may be a visible indicator of ongoing stromal-epithelial interactions in the human and have no critical function in corneal physiology. Bowman's layer is commonly destroyed in diseases such as advanced bullous keratopathy where stromal-epithelial interactions may be interrupted. Bowman's-like layers often form in response to epithelium, for example when epithelial plugs extend into the stroma in corneas with radial keratotomy incisions.

Abstract
We present a case in which an arterial rupture occurring during embolization of an arteriovenous malformation of the left occipital lobe with a flow-directed microcatheter, was successfully sealed with a small amount of glue. We navigated a 1.8-Fr Magic catheter through the posterior cerebral artery, and during superselective test injection, extravasation was observed at the parieto-occipital branch. The catheter was not removed and the perforation site was successfully sealed with a small amount of glue injected through the same catheter. Prompt recognition and closure of the perforation site is essential for good prognosis.
